Hi Everyone... We may be a long way from the excitement of the Royal Wedding at Windsor on Saturday, but we have still managed to include details in this week’s edition about a local link with the British Royal family in our story about Peachester milliner Brenda Treasure on page 10. Clearly though, one Maleny local is not a happy camper as she hadn’t received an invite to the big event – she has, however, put pen to paper to share her views with us. Lisa Plucknett doesn’t like to mince words, and some of those included in her poem may not have been suitable for some of our delicate readers, so we have included an abridged version of her poem to Harry and Meghan. I think we will have to live in hope of finding a local who may be in a position to get themselves a selfie with Harry or Meghan on the big day! For those of you who aren’t planning any Royal Wedding related activities, there is plenty happening in our local area, including the Open Day at the Glasshouse Christian College, see their ad on page 11.

In last week’s edition, we brought you the news that the material change of use development application for the petrol station opposite the primary school in Maleny had fallen through because of non-payment of their application fees. As the payment deadline of May 1 came and went without payment, Sunshine Coast Council deemed that the application was not made properly and returned it to the applicant (Synergy Property Partners). Then on May 4, the application rose like a phoenix from the ashes. The application was relodged this time with the application fee of $17,495 paid in advance. Council have confirmed that the application has been properly made and so the appraisal process will now commence as per the standard procedure. As the development has been deemed to be ‘code assessable’, there is no requirement for public notification or no public submission process. Submissions can be made to council, however these will not hold any official leverage in the deliberations by the planning assessment unit of council. Information on the current application can be found by going to www.pdonline.sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au and searching for ‘MCU18/0111’.
The proposal to develop an eight bowser petrol station, including two food and drink outlets on Bunya Street in Maleny has ignited debate in the Maleny community. Whilst there has been some support expressed via social media sites for the petrol station to go ahead – citing necessity, convenience and local jobs as the major reasons – there has also been a significant and growing opposition. To combine their efforts, locals have formed a group – ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School Ever’ – and are mobilising support and campaigning to have the relevant authorities intervene on the behalf of the community. Spokesperson for the group Angie Kelly says they are outraged with the second application. “The developers may have assumed that Maleny wouldn’t have the energy for a second round of lobbying against this ridiculous development, but they couldn’t be more wrong,” she said. “The vast majority of people are opposed to it, especially as it is right opposite our primary school. Surely there is a safer and more appropriate site.” With over 400 students attending the school the group believe the proposed development would have serious negative impacts on traffic congestion, and potentially road safety and pedestrian safety, around the school. Specific concerns raised by the group include that Bunya Street (a state road) and other streets
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

around the school are already heavily congested with pick-up/ drop-off traffic, commuter traffic and traffic from the nearby high school. As well, the development application requires existing parking spots in front of the school to be eliminated, so that an additional lane is available for vehicles to pass those turning right into the development. As some of these existing parking spaces are also a bus stop for the school bus, this would mean during bus operation the lane will be blocked and so traffic will be unable to pass vehicles entering the site. With the proposed driveway access being extremely wide to accommodate the swept path of a 19m B-double articulated fuel tanker, the group believe it would make it difficult for the pedestrians to safely cross, at a location that experiences the highest foot traffic of school children walking to and from school. The group have also questioned elements of the traffic impact assessment (TIA) report by Lambert & Rehbein, submitted as part of the application. They believe the report contains grossly incorrect assertions about traffic volumes and uptake of public transport. They have also raised concerns about the

accuracy and relevance of the methodology and data used in the application’s traffic impact assessment report, along with concerns about the omission of the primary point of probable congestion from the report (entry to the site from both lanes on Bunya Street). Because of these inconsistencies, the group are asking locals to send a letter to Hon. Mark Bailey, Minister for Transport and Main Roads, asking him to intervene. A copy of the letter for locals to use can be found on their facebook site (‘No Fuel Opposite Our School Ever’). So far, over 610 letters of protest have been completed to be presented to the Minister, with many more emailed and posted by other concerned locals. ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School Ever’ are also encouraging as many people as possible to make a submission to council opposing the application. To find out more about the group go to their facebook page.

Maleny’s open space footprint grows
As part of a recent consultation process relating to changes to the Sunshine Coast planning scheme, Council has identified the site of a new District Recreation Park to be located within the Maleny Community Precinct. In the proposed changes to the planning scheme maps, the approximately 600m long and 100m wide parkland is highlighted along the northern boundary of the precinct lands, fronting North Maleny Road. This comes on top of the recent announcement of a Heritage Park on the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club leasehold land and two large parcels of land purchased by Council to be added to the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve complex. Council confirmed their plans for a District Park on the precinct lands. “Council developed the Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan in 2010 in consultation with the community,” a Council spokesperson said. “The proposed maps are based on more recent network planning undertaken as part of the development of the Environment and Liveability Strategy and reflect the approximate location of a future district park within the precinct, as outlined in the master plan.” ‘District’ level parks are typically large area of open space generally located in or close to urban areas. They are primarily used for recreation, social, cultural and leisure activities, and may provide

There are many simple things we can add to their food that may help them through these times. Ginger and Turmeric are two easily accessible spices which will help improve their mobility. We often also advise giving glucosamine powder, MSM powder (methylsulfonamide methane) and Green Lipped Mussel extract, as these components together improve joint fluid. We have all these products in stock along with many homoeopathic remedies which would also assist in keeping your pet mobile. Other ways to ensure they are warm during winter is to add a blanket to their bedding and raising their bed up off the ground if possible. Popping a coat on at night or anytime the chilly winds blow will also keep them cosy. We have some very fashionable and functional ones here at the practice so drop in and have a look. other complementary values such as landscape enrichment, biodiversity or cultural conservation. They may also host community events and celebrations. Nearby examples of similar level parks include the all-abilities Pioneer Park at Landsborough and the new Glass House Mountains District Park. Inclusions in District Recreation parks can include a dog off-leash area, barbeques, picnic tables and structures, boardwalks and viewing platforms, bike paths, exercise equipment, skate park, playground, kick and throw areas, multi-use areas, outdoor artworks, memorials, interpretive signage, shade structures, on-site parking, toilets and rainwater tanks. Cooke Park in the centre of the Maleny high street is undergoing a playground rehabilitation, with some new structures installed and others to follow once additional funds are approved within the 2018/19 budget. Bicentennial Park along Bicentennial Lane in Maleny adjoins a little known large open space park called Mary Allen-Waters Park behind the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. These parks are designated as ‘civic recreation parks’, meaning that they are a place where residents, visitors and workers gather, socialise, rest and engage in civic activities and community events. They also include play spaces and equipment, picnicking facilities and event spaces.

Cover Story Chilling out of a different kind By Sonia Clark When people think holidays they often think relaxation, sun and sand – not so for Coochin Creek Co-op General manager Steve Williams who has recently returned from a ‘chilled out’ holiday of a very different kind, hiking to the base camp of Mount Everest! Last month, Steve joined a small group of fellow adventurists and spent 19 days hiking up some of the toughest terrain in the world. Steve said he decided to take on the hiking challenge as he liked the idea of joining a more alternative type of holiday tour. “I guess I’m a bit crazy, but I’m not a ‘hop on hop off’ type of tour guy. I wanted to do this while I was still up for it physically and the idea of going on an ‘extreme holiday’ and achieving something as demanding as hiking up to base camp was appealing to me,” explained Steve.
All up the tour took 21 days from mid-March to Mid-April, and Steve joined a small group of 12 others (mostly Aussies) in this once in a lifetime adventure. The tour was organised through ‘World Expeditions’ which Steve had come across during an information night put on towards the end of last year. A committed member of a Sunshine Coast hiking group, Steve likes to keep fairly active, however he found the trip a definite challenge. “I hike just about every week and enjoy the gym and like to get involved with events like Tough Mudder, so I was surprised just how extremely challenging this trip was. It really tested my endurance both in body and mind,” said Steve. Flying out of Brisbane via Singapore on to Kathmandu, the group spent a few days prepping in the Nepalese capital and starting the acclimatisation process. Never having visited a country like Nepal before, Steve found it to be complete eye opener and for the first few days a bit of an assault on his Westernised senses. From here the trekkers flew in a small twin engine propeller plane to Lukla which has the dubious honour of being one of the world’s most dangerous airports to land in. While the total trek was less than 200km, it was the steep ascents that proved ultimately exhausting. Although they had a full support team

and the professional guidance of highly skilled Sherpas, it was a mighty test of endurance. Steve said: “It was such a challenge and climbing the other peaks before reaching base camp was where we really tested ourselves mentally and physically. “I remember that with one of the biggest peaks we all cried once we got there as it was just such an achievement – there was definitely a lot of emotion.” The adventure proved to have many highlights for Steve – probably the fact that he was able to push his body and achieve reaching the peaks before base camp was the most rewarding part of his adventure – and that he played many good hands of Uno during rest times. “After this trip I almost feel I can achieve anything. It was tough but exhilarating and I feel honoured that I have been able to achieve what only an elite number of people can experience,” said Steve.

Anne Brooker
Former Maleny resident Anne Brooker turned 100 last month and the occasion was well celebrated with a lovely party a few days before the big day and another small family dinner on the night of her birthday, on April 17. Although Anne now lives with her grandson Adam and his family on little farm in Yeppoon, she says her heart will always remain in Maleny. “I cherish the close friendships and fond memories from my time there – it is a wonderful place and I loved living there for all those years,” Anne says. Anne was born in Wynnum West in the Moreton Bay region of Brisbane. As a young women she would dance the night away at City Hall and it was there she met her first husband, Jock King. “All the girls would sit on one side of the hall and the young men would sit along the other side. There was a blackboard with all the name of the dances for the evening and if a young man asked you to dance to put a tick next to the dance – it was great fun,” Anne remembers. Anne and Jock married and moved to property on the outskirts of Brisbane at Capalaba where they lived for many years. When their children grew up they relocated to Maleny. Following the death of Jock, Anne met Bert Brooker when she was in her 70s and Bert was in his 80s – no doubt it was while wearing the snazzy bright whites on the Maleny bowling green that they caught eachothers’ eye. Granddaughter-in-law Kathy King, who Anne lives with now, remembers that Anne and Bert had a beautiful relationship and enjoyed many adventures together. She says that their first
attempt driving around Australia ended with Anne falling asleep and hitting the only tree on the Nullarbor Plain. The car was a mess and Bert broke his ankle, however their second attempt a year or two later was more successful, possibly as they drove in the opposite direction, therefore avoiding the same tree! Anne lived for many years in a house next to the RSL and across the road from the pub in Bunya Street, and it was only after it was deemed that she couldn’t live alone at the age of 97 that she moved up to Yeppoon to live with Kathy and Adam and their children. She has a number of great grandchildren living near her in Yeppoon – and she can now happily keep track of all their comings and goings. Anne was chuffed with the card from the Queen and she also received cards from the Prime Minister, Governor General of Australia, Governor of Queensland, Premier, Federal Member, Local Member and even the local Mayor. When the card from the Queen came, Anne’s family thought it might say “Hi Anne, long time no speak"... as Queen Elizabeth exchanged pleasantries and shook Anne's hand back in 1970 at a Garden Party at Parliament House. It was the second invitation from the Queen, the first being in 1954. Anne says she didn't attend that occasion as she didn't drive and she remembers that Jock wouldn't drive her there at night – however she still has the invitations to both of these events. “I was not really expecting the letter from the Queen, so that was a very nice surprise. All the letters that came through were lovely and made me feel very ‘excy’ (excited) and important,” Anne says.
Anne’s mobility has understandably become limited over the last few years, however she has a wonderfully sharp mind and memory and has some wonderful conversations with her family about ‘the old days’. Anne speaks fondly of her time in Maleny and was involved with numerous social groups and community organisations during her time. To mark her centennial year, Anne was deeply appreciative to receive beautiful cards, flowers and gifts from all her lovely friends and family in Maleny. The Bridge Club, the Rotary Club, Sunshine Coast Legacy and Easton Lawyers were amongst the well-wishers. With a brother who is 95, it seems that the longevity gene runs in Anne’s family. Regardless of good genes, her family believe her ‘real secret’ is that she has two half glasses of good wine a night (and is partial to a drop of bubbly), doesn’t drink water and doesn’t like salad!

Community News Work set to start Bruce Highway, Beerburrum
Work is about to begin on $2.5million of resurfacing work along a 3.25km stretch on the Bruce Highway southbound, between the Red Road overpass and Steve Irwin Way at Beerburrum. Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the works will take about four weeks to complete, weather permitting and will provide an improved road surface and smoother driving conditions for motorists. “Works will involve removing the existing road surface, completing asphalt resurfacing and line marking,” he said. “The works will be completed at night, between the hours of 7pm and 5am to minimise disruption to motorists, although there may be minor delays through the work zone at these times. “During the works, we will be closing the southbound exit to Steve Irwin Way and Beerburrum-Donnybrook Road for two nights, to allow for resurfacing of the off-ramp. “Southbound motorists will be detoured to the Pumicestone Road interchange and we’ll ensure advance notice is given to the travelling public so motorists can plan their trip and allow for the detour. “Traffic controllers, reduced speed limits, police and signage will be in place and we remind motorists to allow for the changed conditions to ensure safety through the worksite for our workers and road users.”
Whisky distillery in Montville
Montville may become home to the Coast’s first whisky distillery if Sunshine Coast Council approves a development application for a home based business. The application is to establish a small-scale boutique craft distillery at 298 Western Avenue, Montville, the principle place of residence for the applicants, Michael and Sandra Martin. Trading under the name E.A. Martin & Sons Pty Ltd, the plan is to make quality whisky for wholesale and internet sales. The distillery will not be open to the public nor will it have a cellar door. Operations will be undertaken within existing sheds and employ a maximum of four people. The distillery will be environmentally sensitive with all water being collected and recycled on site, solid wastes will be re-used by local dairies and aquaculture industries as animal food, and a 15kW solar system supplies all their electricity needs. The development proposal has been made using the ‘FastTrack’ application process, where a decision is made within ten working days of the application being submitted. To find out more, go to www.pdonline. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘MCU18/0117’.

Royal link for Peachester milliner
By Sonia Clark As royal wedding anticipation dominates international news in the lead up to the May 19 date, Peachester milliner Brenda Treasure has her own local link to add to the stories of royal excitement. Brenda, who owns LilyM Hats and LilyM Millinery Supplies and Unique Headpieces, recently returned from London where she attended London Hat Week. Showcasing her products, as well as attending a number of industry events and gatherings during her whirlwind visit, Brenda was able to meet leading British milliner to royalty and the stars, Stephen Jones OBE, in what she said was a “wonderful moment”. “One of the highlights of London Hat Week was definitely meeting the amazing milliner Stephen Jones at the launch party. He has had an incredible journey which he talked about as guest of honour at the opening night,” said Brenda. Stephen Jones and his exquisitely crafted hats are widely acknowledged as products of one of the most important milliners of our time. His collaborative design work and iconic headpieces have been worn by fashionistas, rock stars and royalty such as Diana, Princess of Wales, and now Meghan Markle. In another ‘royal link’, Brenda was also fortunate to meet milliner Ian Bennett who she said famously sold an entire shop including the fittings to the Queen who had the entire store installed above her room in the palace. With her own ‘in-house’ millinery store, the Queen continued to have Ian make headpieces for her, which was undoubtedly a key highlight of his career. Brenda with Stephen Jones

‘Where’s My Invite?’
I phoned up Megs and Harry, And said “Now listen kids – I might not be quite Upper Class But I’m not yet on the skids.
Now I know Australia Post Are often rather slack; But I’ve been off to the Op Shops And my wardrobe’s crackerjack. But first of all this wedding Still waiting for my invite; I’d really add a Touch of Class Though I’m not one to skite. I’ve got these faithful denims I’m attacking with the scissors And will you be an HRH Or just be Harry’s Missus? And while I’m giving Megs advice It’s time to polish Harry; That ginger fuzz looks shifty Get it off – before you marry. It looks like grated carrot Or scrambled egg – gone off; To face that on the pillow Poor Megs – you must be soft. But actually old Henry Eight Had ginger facial fuzz, But he had some nasty habits So we won’t give him a buzz. I’m looking at your forebears Hal, And some were raving mad; But your Mum was really lovely, And not all of them were bad.
And we need a bit of colour, ‘Cause some were wishy washy, And some were rather horsey, And some are far too poshy. And now I think I’ve said enough, Each day I beat a path To the letter box – I’m waiting, And I’ve even run a bath. I’ll polish up real lovely, And I’ll sing “Oh – Promise Me” But like the others not on your invitations list I’ll stay home – and have High Tea. We’ll have fairy bread and lamingtons Hors D’oeuvres and canapes; But still I think it’s a Bleeding Shame That you’ve forgotten me. So – here’s looking up your kilt Harry, And I hope you’ve got the balls, To add a bit of colour, To your kin – the British Royals. Yours faithfully Dame Lisa Plucknett, Maleny Octogenarian Antipodean in Waiting
Heather Jones and Madeline Herbert-Miller
The art of friendship
By Arika Skrandies Have you ever wondered what makes a picture? According to Heather Jones and Madeline Herbert-Miller, it starts with art, friendship and dogs. Twenty-four years, later friendship comes first. Heather and Madeline first met in the township of Maleny during a George Hazzard watercolour class. “We sort of hit it off straight away and we were both mad keen to learn and get our art work out there,” reminisces Heather. “When we first met we both had puppies from the same litter, which brought us even closer together. That was fifteen years of celebrating puppies’ birthdays!” Great friends Heather and Madeline come from completely different artistic backgrounds. Madeline began her art career formally with a scholarship at the Ealing Art College in London. Then in May of 1960, Madeline migrated to Australia and commenced studies with the likes of Roy Churcher in Brisbane. Here she later married, had two boys and worked in dress shop design and mural backdrops. Sadly, her marriage was not to last. “I was married for twenty-eight years and went through a terrible divorce. My sister lived in Maleny, so I moved up with her. That’s when I got my ‘mojo’ back’.” Madeline began painting flowers, landscapes and portraits in Maleny. She is an award-winning watercolour and pastels artist, and has sold her work all over the world. “Now I lean more towards travelling... overseas, I like old buildings, I like the history, I like the colours. That really, really excites me. I get goose bumps when I look at something of Italy or Greece. My heart really belongs overseas.” Heather’s art career started out more humbly. A professional housewife, bark from Melaleuca trees tore at her heartstrings. “I hadn’t done anything art at all before, I had made clothes for children and things like that – but art wasn’t in it. But when I started bark, it just became an obsession.” Heather explains: “Bark art started with the early pioneers, they would put a bit of bark on cardboard and glue it… they made frames out of branches and a lot of people tried to refine it.” 10
Heather later joined the Art in Bark Association in Brisbane, founded by a Spitfire fighter pilot from Czechoslovakia. “He was a big macho man and he saw some ladies doing bark art and he just thought it was absolutely amazing. He refined it – so we used to go down to the university on George Street, Brisbane every Saturday afternoon and have lessons from him and it was just great and that’s how I learnt.” Unique to Australia and using no paint, Heather’s art materials cannot be bought at your average art store. “I collect my bark from all over down the east coast of Australia. It is all paperbark and there are 36 species – that’s where you get the different colours. You have to go into a swamp sometimes to get your dirty greys and browns!” laughs Heather. Madeline admires the adventurous spirit of her friend. “I have often seen you in the middle of the street picking bark from a tree and I think, ‘eek!’ If the council saw you Heather, I think I would die.” You cannot help but admire the strength of Madeline and Heather’s friendship. “We are pretty strong women and I think we are fairly honest. We’d know if we weren’t being genuine with each other. We have completely different styles to each other’s work and appreciate it,” says Madeline. Their use of different art mediums of bark versus watercolour seems to bond them. “I have asked Madeline for criticism occasionally, but I don’t take any notice most of the time!” jokes Heather. Heather and Madeline’s friendship is as unassailable as their love for art. “Art is our natural high. It is yummy,” says Heather. “The second high is when a total stranger buys your painting,” chimes Madeline. From 3pm Saturday May 26 you will get your chance. Maleny Art Direct on Maple Street will hold an exhibition titled ‘Inspiration’, showcasing both Heather’s bark and Madeline’s watercolour award-winning art.

Open Day – building for the future
Come with empty stomachs because there will be food trucks galore with the tasty treats like gourmet donuts, funnel cakes, Tuscan pork belly rolls, Italian salads, scrumptious seafood, snow cones, ice creams, sushi, quiches, slices, lasagne, cheesecake, deep fried cookie dough and more. One big change visitors may notice this year is that we have said goodbye to helium balloons. Instead of greeting the children with a helium balloon to tie on their hand we have beautiful coloured windmills which are 100% recyclable and made in Australia. There will also be a gift bag of goodies for every visitor who fills in an enquiry form. Glasshouse Christian College has short waiting lists for some grades and this sometimes includes Prep. To avoid disappointment, we invite everyone to attend our Open Day on Saturday 19 May from 10am to 2pm and learn more. It will be a fun day out for the whole family and everyone is welcome.
Have you been driving down Roberts Road and wondered what has been going on with the giant mounds of dirt and heavy equipment at Glasshouse Christian College? IGA Beerwah gives back IGA Beerwah Store Manager Rose Moana last week presented cheques to the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy program, the Peachester State School P&C and Australia Zoo, Wildlife Warriors. Rose said that IGA Beerwah is really pleased to continue to assist the local community through their Community Chest. For many years they have been giving back and supporting groups in the local area. The groups received the donations, which are a combination of gift card donations by customers, and also through nominations made via IGA Beerwah’s loyalty rewards system. Mike Turner, who received $900 for the Beerwah High School Chaplaincy said: “We are very thankful for the donation to keep us doing what we do.” Nicole Haines from the Peachester State School P&C said: “The $900 donation will be used to replace the reading books – some are 30-40 years old, so this is a fantastic opportunity to bring some great new reading material to the children." Emily Wilkinson from Australia Zoo, Wildlife Warriors said that they were really excited to be receiving the cheque for $2,685, which will be going to the Animal Hospital. “It’s a very busy time at the moment with animals in need,” Emily said.

Cyberbullying public forum State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has urged the Sunshine Coast community to have their say at the upcoming Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce public forum on Monday May 21 at 6pm at the Lake Kawana Community Centre. It comes as the Queensland Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce has announced 12 forums being held across Queensland so local residents can provide their ideas on how best to tackle cyberbullying as a community. “The Taskforce needs vital input from parents, students, schools and community groups who have witnessed or experienced the devastating impact of cyberbullying,” Mr McArdle said. “It is a changing world. For better or worse our society is increasingly connected through social media but it is essential that we give our children and grandchildren the skills and tools to navigate social media as safely as they do in this world. “Our country was devastated by the tragic loss of Dolly Everett who took her own life in January after enduring years of bullying, but sadly this is only one of so many similar stories. “If you can’t make it to my event, you can put your ideas on what we could do in writing.” Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said that, as a father of five children, it is vital and a constant challenge to make sure they have the skills and tools to live a life online. “For that reason I encourage the people of the Sunshine Coast to have their say at this community event,” he said. Submissions can be emailed to the Taskforce at antibullyingtaskforce@ premiers.qld.gov.au or provided on the website at qld.gov.au/ cyberbullyingtaskforce. Following consultation, the Taskforce will recommend an anticyberbullying framework to the Premier by August 31, along with suggested community and government actions. The Taskforce website can be found at qld.gov.au/cyberbullyingtaskforce

POLICE BEAT Home Security Have you ever considered getting CCTV cameras for your home? The cost of these units has reduced dramatically over the last few years and you can now get a system with recorder and cameras for less than $200. Having cameras on your home can help to deter offenders who look for easy targets and may even get you a discount on your home insurance. The Queensland Police website has information about types of systems and where to best place cameras. While the information is aimed more towards businesses it is also relevant to home systems. Parking issues There is a bit of a pet peeve at Beerwah Police Station about people without disabled parking permits parking in disabled parking bays. While it is obviously quite inconsiderate and rude it is also an offence which carries penalty of $252. If you want to “dob in” a vehicle parked in a disabled parking spot note down the registration and vehicle details (make, model, colour) take a photo showing where it is parked and pass the information to police. We are not asking anyone to take it upon themselves to confront the vehicle owner, police will contact them and determine if an infringement notice should be issued. Scamwatch
We have had several people report various scams recently and with the end of the financial year approaching there is likely to be an increase. Scamwatch is a website run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and has information about every possible type of scam you can think of and what to look out for so that you don’t become a victim. Remember, if it seems too good to be true it probably is and, if it seems to not quite add up, it probably doesn’t. If someone calls wanting personal details or money, make sure you confirm who they are by calling the business or organisation on a known number not one supplied by them. Don’t give personal details over the phone or online to anyone you don’t know. Many scammers also ask for payment in unusual forms such as iTunes gift cards, preloaded credit cards or Western Union money transfers. Don’t be scared to say no, scammers will try to pressure you into a quick decision, take your time and do your research.

Kids & Parents Superstar mums
Mums are so special that they have a whole week of celebrations at Glasshouse Christian College. Prep Mothers’ Night is a very special time for fun activities, photos with mum and then a delicious supper. The children can’t wait to show their mums what they have already learned in school. Mother’s Day Chapel is a lovely morning and the church is jam-packed for a concert just for mums. Little Voices choir sang ‘My Mum is a Superstar’, Year 1 recited a poem ‘Why God Created Mums’, Prep sang ‘Mummy Love’ and Year 2 sang the hilarious ‘The Mother’s Day Song’ by Bryant Oden. Another special item was the lower primary teachers standing up and saying why they loved their mums so much. On Thursday the school’s P and F held its Mother’s Day stall where there was everything from hula dancing mums (a firm favourite) to coffee mugs with, ‘I’m a proud Glasshouse Christian College MUM’. This year there were also beautiful paper roses that soon became a popular choice with for all ages. Dominic Unwin selects the famous ‘proud GCC Mum’ coffee cup and the popular paper rose for his mum
Simultaneous Storytime
Children from across the Sunshine Coast will head to council libraries and parks, joining thousands of schools, libraries and playgroups across Australia to read the same book at 11am on Wednesday May 23 as part of the National Simultaneous Storytime. Locals children will be able to participate at both Beerwah and Maleny Libraries from 10.45am to 11.15am. No bookings are necessary. This year, the book that will be read is ‘Hickory Dickory Dash’, written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood.
Discovering the local environment
Sunshine Coast Council recently hosted an environmental workshop or ‘Discovery Day’ at the Annie Hehir Environmental Reserve in Peachester. The event gave 40 Peachester State School children from Years 3 - 6 and the local community the opportunity to learn about this reserve that council recently purchased for its protection. The focus of the day was to learn about the specific animal species living in this beautiful and pristine environment. The children planted over 385 trees during the morning and went bird spotting on an observational walk guided by a Sunshine Coast Council Conservation Officer. The children met and patted feathered, furry and scaly friends that are likely to be found on the reserve, through a very engaging wildlife presentation from Geckoes Wildlife. Junior ecologists emerged when the children were given magnifying glasses to closely observe water samples from two nearby streams. The small invertebrates found in the water are natural indicators as to whether the stream is hosting life that is tolerant or not tolerant to pollution. The children learnt that specimens they sampled were in the ‘very sensitive’ (to pollutants) category. This meant the nearby stream is in fact very healthy, as these specimens would not survive if the water were to have unhealthy traces of pollutants. Peachester State School would like to thank Sunshine Coast Council for this wonderful experience of invaluable outdoor learning. We can’t wait to come back and participate in more environmental projects at this little pocket of paradise in Peachester. Giaan and Isabell collecting freshwater macroinvertebrates

The Sunshine Coast Jazz Club has some great shows coming up in June at the Caloundra Power Boat Club. From 2pm on Sunday June 3 there will be The Jazz Kings with Nicole Parker-Brown and on June 17 they will be presenting a Brazilian Spectacular that is not to be missed. The Jazz Kings is a new band led by Peter Uppman on trumpet whose award-winning style is instantly recognisable. George Matheson on guitar has performed with The Seekers, Liza Minnelli and Peter Allen, and Mark Nathuysen on rhythm guitar is a Brisbane-based composer whose guitar playing varies from jazz to classical, country and bluegrass. John Conley on bass has played and recorded with many bands and artists including Winnifred Atwell, The Four Kinsmen and Errol Buddle. Rodney Ford is on drums, his primary instrument that has led to many engagements with the theatre producers of JC Williamson, and he is also a well-known member of Galapagos Duck. Nicole Parker-Brown has worked extensively throughout Europe and the UK, and her repertoire is inspired by Nina Simone, Bessi Smith and Ella Fitzgerald. The View from Madeline’s Couch is celebrating their 20th year as one of Australia's best and most respected Brazilian groups. This band returns with a wonderful retrospective concert of classic bossa novas, sambas, original tunes and some new musical surprises. The show features stories and songs from the band's three sell-out seasons of the Bossa Nova Sunset Club. Led by the superb vibraphone playing of Kym Ambrose and Portuguese vocals of Anje West, the band features their long time bassist OJ Newcomb, guitarist Bruce Woodward, and Lachlan Hawkins on drums. For information and tickets on both shows contact Carlyn on 0427 782 960. Entry is $22.50 for seniors and $25 for non-members. with Dr Michael Whiticker
Music Today
Honouring the musicians who have come before and will come after us Following our recent festival – the Eudlo Music Nights – I was talking to one of the featured performers, Tommy Leonard, and thanked him for coming on as a solo artist immediately after a band that had people up and dancing; and congratulated him for launching into an up tempo number with a nice groove. He said he hadn’t considered that and liked to begin his sets with that song, ‘Garwan Dala’, which he’d written with Indigenous writer Eve Fesl, honouring country and the people who have come before him. I thought that aside from being a great start to his set, it displayed a wonderful attitude to the role of the artist in society. As we talked further it became clear that Tommy’s world view more than warrants a public airing. It is easy to take the lazy route and react to situations in expected ways, such as when a musician goes on stage for a show and sees a very small audience. As a concert organiser myself I was once confronted by a performer refusing to go on stage when only five people were in the audience. I tried to encourage him by assuring him they had come to see him, (he was the only act) and he might respect that. Tommy said he too had played for “small rooms”, three people in fact at the event in Eumundi where he met Eve Fesl, but it didn’t faze him as he played for every artist and every audience member who had been in that venue before him and who would come after him. I thought about that for a moment, and added, we play for the music too. We are a vessel through which it is expressed and by giving ourselves to the music our love for it will be communicated to the listener on a deeper level. And there are other talents we have been given, as not all are cut out to actually perform. It requires commitment and perhaps even some “fire in the belly”? It is surely an honour to be a musician! So if you too have been granted that gift, then, like Tommy, why not show your respect and play for those who have come before and will come after you; and not just the musicians, play as well for all those who have come to hear you! Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

Mooloolah Valley facility an Australian first The first Eating Disorder Clinic in Australia, to be located on Old Gympie Road at Mooloolah Valley, has taken major steps forward. Sunshine Coast Council has approved the development application and last week the charity received a significant donation from well known Sunshine Coast philanthropists Roy and Nola Thompson. Roy recently handed a cheque for $1 million over to Mark Forbes who, along with his wife Gay, are the co-founders of the endED charity. Mark shared with me the story of his meeting with Roy and the informal way he advised Mark of his and Nola’s decision to support the centre. Mark is clearly grateful for Roy's generosity and admired his humble approach to the support. The huge donation is a significant step forward on the charity’s journey to turning a vision into a reality. And while the rest of us may not be in a position to provide such a large donation, there is another, fun and glamorous way you can support the group – by attending ‘The Main
by Lea Parkes
Event’, a fundraising cocktail evening on July 20 at the Lake Kawana Community Centre. Tickets are $150 per person and can be purchased from the website: ended.org.au/events. When the project is complete the not-for-profit facility will offers a safe haven for people suffering from an eating disorder to begin their journey to a recovered self. Mark said the facility will provide residential treatment options, as well as out-patient services and day programs for continuation of care, focusing primarily on teaching individuals “how”
to recover. “It will provide specialist care using evidencebased research recognised as world best practice,” he said. “Individualised programs combining psychological, conventional and functional medicine, and whole person therapy based treatment will be offered in the rural residential setting." Now that the development application has successfully gone through council the purchase of the property will settle in early July. The next stage of the project will be for the organisation to find businesses that will support the construction work. They will be looking for civil contractors and tradespeople to complete roofing, trusses, tiling, windows and doors, as well as material donations. If you would like to find out more about the organisation or would like to support the work they are doing, visit www.endED.org.au or call Mark on 0407 592 932.

They say that once you have travelled to Africa that it gets into your blood – for Glenview locals Steve and Teena Chumbley this is definitely true. Steve, a zoology graduate from the UK, always had a love for wildlife, and spent many years living in Malawi as a child. Teena hails from a remote property in Western Australia and has enjoyed a successful career in education. The couple met while teaching in an International School in Kuwait 20 years ago, where they decided to try something different and travelled to Arusha,Tanzania with their back packs and lots of ideas. A few years later they started their company, The Infinite Horizon – a travel company offering tailormade safaris to exciting destinations in Africa. Teena said their clients appreciate being able to
discuss the types of experiences they are looking for, and that she and Steve can provide unbiased opinions, innovative ideas and create tailor-made itineraries to suit their individual needs. “You may be looking to see the Tanzanian wildlife, where it is possible to see ‘the big five’ – elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopards and lions, or maybe Kilimanjaro or the Serengeti fires your passion. We can help,” she said. “Please call us today on 0457 249 998 or visit www.theinfinitehorizon.net to make your dream a reality.”
New owner for Mooloolah Beauty Spot Mooloolah Beauty Spot has recently changed hands and the new owner is local lady Sandy Caddy. Having previously owned beauty salons, Sandy brings 32 years industry experience to her new business venture and says she is looking forward to putting in her own touches. Relocating to Mooloolah 18 months ago, she had been working at the salon since May last year, and so when the opportunity came up to purchase the business she jumped at the chance. “Since December, when I bought the business, I’m have slowly been doing an internal makeover and revamping the salon with a ‘modern country’ feel,” Sandy said.

locals supporting locals Scarecrow competition now open A new community competition run by the Mooloolah Valley Bush Telegraph is encouraging Mooloolah locals to get creative and put together entries in a super hero themed scarecrow competition. Promoted via the Mooloolah Valley Bush Telegraph Facebook group, entries for the inaugural scarecrow competition opened at the beginning of the month and Mooloolah residents have until Monday May 28 to submit an online entry form. Organisers are hoping to secure at least 30 entries before the closing date, and a host of local businesses have thrown their support behind this fun community initiative donating some awesome prizes.
Scarecrows will be on display during the month of June and no doubt will provide an entertaining drawcard for Mooloolah visitors and locals alike. Once all the entries have been received, a downloadable map will be available via the competition website for people to view the entries around the area. A panel of judges will shortlist six of the best, and the ‘scarecrow finalists’ will be displayed at the café in Mooloolah. The winner will be announced on July 1. So get your creative juices flowing and get your family and friends together to plan your ‘Super Hero Scarecrow’. For more details and to enter, visit www.mooloolah.com.

You Said It Re: Landsborough development
It is fantastic to see the recent level of engagement in the community around development issues. These issues will only continue to become more important as demand for housing in our area continues to grow. Any feedback I get from the community strengthens my ability to make the arguments in council for any improvements to the systems and rules we need to protect our townships’ character. Perhaps in my last letter on the topic I focused too much on explaining the challenges in the application process and not on explaining my commitment and approach. Let me be clear: I will absolutely defend your right and my right to challenge any development that puts pure financial gain ahead of what's best for our townships. I will fight tooth and nail to make sure that every planning scheme assessment criteria available is applied, and that council carefully considers whether any application is excessively developed, has inadequate parking, unnecessarily clears vegetation, is not in keeping with a local area plan, etc. It's also important to repeat that anyone can see every development application submitted to council (as did our local newspaper). Anyone can also track them as they progress through assessment and anyone can make a submission or let me know how they feel, even on ‘code-assessable’ developments. I absolutely encourage this and I welcome the opportunity to add whatever weight I can to every concern that I receive or see. Development is always friend to some and foe to others, which is why I will be encouraging the community to use the new service council is developing for a late 2018 release called 'Development Eye' which will make it even easier to track development applications online and have your say. As always feel free to contact me or council with any questions or concerns you may have. Cr Rick Baberowski Sunshine Coast Council
Re: Proposed Landsborough Development
We have emailed Cr Rick raising our concerns about the development at 37 Maleny Road, Landsborough and received a less than satisfactory reply from John Borthwick, Principal Development Planner, dated 19 April 2018. We need Cr Rick to say what he is going to do to stop this development, not what he cannot do. It appears that Landsborough ratepayers are being ignored and we agree with J Weeks that a lobby group needs to be formed to change the zoning laws. Rubber stamping this development will open the floodgates for more mass high density housing and the destruction of the village-like nature of our town. M & B Brough Landsborough
CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.
Find a more suitable site
It’s not hard to notice the angst that the proposed Landsborough development is causing locals. To some degree I have to feel for the council. There are so many NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) on the Sunshine Coast that the council has great trouble trying to get development moving without a lot of resistance. However this proposed development smacks of State Government pressure. Without putting too fine a point on it, this has the potential to be a half-way house for newly released guests of our local Correctional Establishment. Whilst this is a necessity for them as well as us, I have to question the location. It's not far from the primary school and front and centre for passing visitors. It certainly detracts from the rural, laid back feel of the town. I'm sure there are more suitable sites in and around the town, where adequate parking facilities can be accommodated. Derek Browning Glass House Mountains
Not happy
I would like to voice my disgust, shame and disappointment to our Councillor regarding how our Swan Street, Beerwah is such a disgrace. The problems include: the amount of cars that park on the footpath, daily, including cars parked half on the footpath and half on the road killing the grass on the footpath. Other cars are parked on the footpath for days on end. The amount of weeds and grass growing in the gutters is eroding away the bitumen when it rains as the water cannot flow freely down the gutter. There is one resident who mows the grass in gutter with his ride on mower. What can the council do to clean this up? Some properties in this street are overgrown with grass which attracts rodents and snakes. Can these people be made to clean up their yards? The area between the cul-de-sac and Mawhinney Street and the Steve Irwin Way corner is an eyesore and a disgrace to Beerwah. I understand this is not the only street in Beerwah, but it is mine and I care about the community as a whole. Some people in our town do their utmost best to keep the town looking neat and tidy, whereas others don’t, which is a great disappointment also, and it shows that the council do not have a great interest in the Hinterland as well. Many thanks and trusting something can be done by council to tidy up Beerwah. Name supplied Swan Street, Beerwah
Re: Pot Holes
I am in agreement with D. West’s letter in last week’s edition, about the condition of the roads in this neck of the woods. The condition of the road
between Landsborough to Beerwah and Beerwah to Glass House is disgraceful. I noticed the road crew filling in a pothole three days ago on the way to Glass House. Well, bless me, there it is again. I have written to council and Cr Rick Baberowski. I did get a reply however still no action, except more pothole filling with cold mix. It is no good just to dump some cold mix in the hole and smooth it over, it doesn't last a week as at the intersection of Clarkes Road. How many times has the section of road from Beerwah to Landsborough been repaired? Answer: so many times the cost would equal a new highway. If we were living on the strip at Alex Headland or that neck of the woods you could bet your bottom dollar it would be done properly and overnight. Clarkes Road – anyone want to hazard a guess at the speed limit as there are no speed signs… 60 would be safe 50 would be better as it twists and turns and has blind corners. I have checked with local, state and federal government departments, no one wants responsibility for this road and, for the record, the speed limit is 100km/h, go figure. Name supplied Clarkes Road, Beerwah
Where will the children play?
ABS figures from the 2016 census reveal that Maleny and its immediate surroundings have a population of almost 1,000 children below the age of 14 years. Also hundreds of children with their families visit Maleny on a regular basis. Surely this is a significant percentage of our population that deserves to have proportionate representation on the community land that is known as the Maleny Precinct. We applaud the attempt to redress this balance and create a playground for them within the proposed Pioneer Park. However this would be a very small area that is behind an enclosed fence. We can do better than this. Imagine an area where children can play freely and interact with nature in an open treed space, a place where families can enjoy a picnic or barbeque and can sit and enjoy the surroundings. Active play is important for young children… ball games, hide and seek, climbing, running, skipping… the list is only constrained by a child’s imagination. When play is reduced to a very small area, or behind an enclosed fence, nature play is no longer possible. Please visit communitymaleny.org and add your voice in support for a community park on the precinct. Let us give our kids the playground they deserve so they can “go outside and play”. Libby and Marek Malter Maleny Some letters have been held over to next week's edition
Some tips for investing in property There’s a reason property investors take up a large chunk of the mortgage market. Investing in property can be a reliable place to store your money, and ideally make a return. Today we’ve put together some tips for investing wisely in the market. You will need to invest time researching the property market. The property market ebbs and flows, with prices going up and down, depending on supply and demand. It’s not just house prices you are watching; you also need to look at 22
rental returns. Track back several years, and look for growth in rents. This is a fairly good indication that the rental market is strong. You also need to invest time making sure your finances are in order. Your Smartline adviser will help you streamline the process of getting your finances in order? They will help you identify mortgage options, and calculate costs of purchasing an investment property, including taxes, administrative fees, insurance and ongoing property maintenance costs.
You also need to plan how to manage property upkeep. Will you outsource to a property manager once you’ve purchased your property? What are the ongoing costs of maintaining an investment property? You need to think about what you can afford, what the market is doing and the likelihood of healthy rental returns. Think about buying property which attracts renters. Close to a CBD or University for example. Look at future growth in the area you are buying. Limited opportunity to expand construction
and population growth, means that supply and demand will swing in the investor’s favour. Rental returns are likely to increase. Contact Teresa Harrison today for more tips to help get you strated.

Say cheese!
Elisabeth Fekonia of Black Mountain has been making her own hard cheese for over twenty years and whether it be using her own cow or goat milk or buying bottles of milk from the supermarket shelf, it all makes damn good cheese. It all started a couple of decades ago when Elisabeth had thoughts of being self-sufficient, wanting to grow and produce her own food. With a library book in one hand and a ladle in the other, on her property, she taught herself the process of not only making cheese and sourdough but also fermenting vegetables and fruit. Elisabeth is coming to Landsborough on May 20 to teach others how to make their own. She will talk about the science of fermenting foods, one of the latest food trends, which has been linked to good health. Go to www. permacultureproduce.com.au for more information and bookings.

Noticeboard Expo kept Woodies busy The skills and creativity of the Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild (the Woodies) were on show at the recent Maleny Wood Expo with two displays in the pavilions and a Children’s Workshop under a marquee on the Cork Oval. The marquee was shared with members of the Maleny Men’s Shed. The Children’s Workshop gave children the opportunity to gain experience in working with wood. Guild members were kept busy encouraging children of all ages in the art of pyrography (wood burning) messages, especially Mother’s Day messages on preprepared wooden cheese boards. Members were also kept busy helping children to assemble wooden pot plant holders. When the works were assembled, the children took their pot holders to the Barung Landcare display where they were given a potted plant to give to mum on Mother’s day.

What’s your focus? So often in our lives we determine who we are and how we live according to what others think about us. Those opinions therefore become our focus. How often do people buy certain clothes, cars or houses that they believe will make them look successful, attractive and of value? It is a life-changing step when we shift our focus from other people to God. People are imperfect, make mistakes and can hurt us, but The Bible says that God is perfect, never makes mistakes and wants to bless us. Having God as our focus means that we aren’t shaken when people inevitably disappoint or hurt us. Humans are flawed creatures who too often choose selfishness instead of selflessness. Having God as our focus means that we have a stability and a peace that can then flow into our families, friendships, workplaces, and schools – all areas of our lives. It also helps us to respect others even if we don’t
agree with them or like them, because we can entrust that relationship to God. That is where faith comes in to the picture. The other benefit is that when things happen that are difficult, we always have someone who we can turn to when we need help, to draw strength from. I believe that if we truly seek God, He will meet us where we are at and give us peace and more than that – restore our lives! Anyone can pray. It doesn’t take any special words – it is about ‘heart’. The Bible says that God knows everything anyway, so we may as well be honest with ourselves when we talk to Him. Be encouraged! Take heart, know that God sees you and loves you – that is what the ‘Gospel’ is all about!

Find your feet at Maleny
This weekend, Saturday and Sunday May 19 and 20, Maleny Film Society is offering a contemporary comedy/ romance from the UK starring some of Britain's best-loved screen actors. Described by one reviewer as "comfort food for the young at heart", ‘Finding your Feet’ opens when Sandra (Imelda Staunton) discovers on the eve of her retirement that her husband is having an affair with her (so-called) best friend. Enraged, the snobbish Sandra moves in with her long-estranged bohemian sister Bif (Celia Imrie) to share her shambolic council flat. It's not long before Sandra is smoking Bif's weed, turning up at her dance class and turning her attention in no uncertain terms to dancing demon Charlie, played by Timothy Spall. And then there's Bif's friend Jackie, played by the sassy Johanna Lumley. This is an undemanding film which will entertain its audience and perhaps encourage us to reassess our own attitudes. Directed by Richard Loncraine,‘Finding your Feet’ was voted Best Audience Film at Palm Springs International Film Festival. When: Saturday May 19, Sunday May 20 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street Food and Drinks: Saturday night dinner from 6pm- 7pm catered by Wild Rocket; tea/coffee and homemade slices stand, and drinks available from the bar. Sunday: Tea/coffee and homemade slices stand, and drinks available from the bar Movie: Screens from 7.15pm Saturday and 4pm Sunday. Running time: 111 minutes Cost: $13 adults (non-members), $8 members and students with ID, and children under 16, $5. Members may book online. Tickets also available at the Information Centre, Maple St, Maleny, 9am to 2pm, or they can be purchased at the door Info: www.malenyfilmsociety.info
By Judith Ross-Smith Pick up any newspaper and read all about them! Endless discussions by feature writers from every side of politics. What does it mean to be right… in every sense of the word? But what would happen if the world of our leaders started to shift, even a little? Lyall Brooks stars in ‘A Prudent Man’ Find out at the first show of the Photo by Adam Fawcett Maleny Arts Council’s 2018 season, ‘A Prudent Man’, at the Community Centre on Sunday May 27 at 2pm. Bookings are open and the show is suitable for 16+ audiences. Go to www.malenyartscouncil.com and follow the prompts to trybooking. ‘A Prudent Man’ is a darkly political thriller brought to the audience by Australian actor Lyall Brooks in a tour de force that has brought him worldwide acclaim and an invitation to perform this piece at the prestigious New York United Solo Festival last year. Maleny is part of an Australia wide tour and Arts Council President Peter Lavery is delighted to be able to bring it to this region. “I have seen this gripping performance and I am pleased to have been able to secure it for Maleny,” Professor Lavery said. “It is ideal for our discriminating and thinking audience whose interests include politics and history. “I hope our senior high school and university students in these disciplines, as well as theatre studies, will come to this. It will be invaluable to them, both as a discussion point and as a lesson in how to develop a great solo performance. “Especially valuable to students would be the Q&A session after the performance that I will conduct with Lyall and the audience after the style of the ABC’s Tony Jones.” This Q&A conversation can be continued afterwards by meeting the man himself as the audience is invited to mingle on the Deck with complimentary sandwiches and nibbles and the bar will be open to purchase drinks. Prices are $30, $25 for members and $15 for students. Parties of ten attract a reduced cost of $25 a ticket. This can be arranged by phoning the Arts Council’s treasurer, John Marsden, on 5494 2584.

In the Garden Toad-ally awesome
Launched last week at Beef Week in Rockhampton, a new and improved trap uses a love song serenade as the new weapon in the fight against the cane toad. The leap forward in technology is a result of a cooperative research effort between James Cook University (JCU) and Animal Control Technologies Australia (ACTA). Utilising an existing very successful ACTA cane toad trap design, JCU researchers identified what made the male toad calls attractive to female toads, then set about creating recordings. Through a solar powered battery system, a light is used to attract insects to the trap, which in turn attracts hungry toads. Combine this with the alluring song of the male cane toad from the special call mimicking simulator, and the researchers found that capture rates increased ten-fold. JCU researcher Ben Muller said that a female cane toad may lay upwards of 20,000 eggs per clutch so removing a single female with eggs from the population is more effective for control than removing a single male. “We think that low frequency calls indicate to female toads that they are hearing a large-bodied male and the high pulse rate means the male making the call has high energy reserves. These things combine to make them believe they have found a good breeding partner,” he said. The device – called the Toadinator – is lightweight and small enough to be used in residential backyards. The trap is a cleverly designed with three sides consisting of one-way clear plastic swing finger doors, where the toads can enter through but not exit again. Traps can be purchased through ACTA for $395 (ex gst) plus $25 postage. Contact them on enquiries@animalcontrol.com.au or (03) 9308 9688.
Strength in Diversity With Spencer and Karen Shaw
If you, as I do, like sharing your backyard with wildlife, then diversity of plants and resources is key to the diversity of wildlife you’ll see and share your backyard with. Nectar producing flowers such as Leptospermum and Melaleuca spp. provide food for birds, possums, bees, butterflies and a host of other insects. Fruits (even your fruit trees!) feed a whole range of native fauna and small native fruits such as Mutton wood - Myrsine variabilis, Silky Myrtle - Decaspermum humile and Midyim Austromyrtus dulcis can attract a great range of small adaptable birds such as Lewin’s Honey Eater. Insects eating your plants is often looked upon as detrimental, but the insects in turn provide a protein boost to many birds, who in turn help with pest control - Spangled Drongos love Citrus Bugs! The more diversity of plant types from grasses, herbs and small shrubs, through to vines and trees provides habitat niches for an even richer range of fauna. Nest boxes, piles of rocks and logs, frog ponds and bird baths add even more to the mix. Planning and planting habitat for your garden not only enriches our local ecosystems, it enriches your life too.

Not long now until Gardening on the Edge
Just a reminder that it’s not long now until the Gardening on the Edge weekend (June 9 and 10). You may have noticed some corflute signs on the side of some local roads – the Maleny Garden Club (who organise the Gardening on the Edge event) are keen for all locals to be involved. With six open gardens in and around the Maleny and Montville area, and a massive plant and garden expo at the Maleny Showgrounds… it’s definitely
one to put into your diary now. It's only $5 a garden or $20 for all six, and the expo is free entry. One of the great aspects of the event is that the Maleny Garden Club gives all the proceeds from the weekend back to local groups and organisations. So, not only are you getting to see some truly lovely gardens, but you will be supporting local community organisations in the process. This year for the very first time, the Maleny Garden Club has posted a preview of the gardens on their website. go to www.malenygardenclub. Photos – Villa Just 10a and Villa10b - in ad store org, find the ‘Gardening on the Edge’ tab at the top, click on ‘GOE 2018’ and you’ll see a link to the map and description of the gardens. See you there on June 9 and 10.

CASUAL STANDBY CATALOGUE INSERTERS NEEDED Every Monday night, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News insert catalogues and flyers into the paper at our Glass House Mountains office for 2 to 4 hours (depending on the number of catalogues) starting anytime after 8.30pm. On occasions the regular staff are sick or away, or there are too many catalogues for the regulars to handle. So, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News requires a couple of locals interested in being on the books as standby inserters. You need to be available on a Monday night and be able to get to our office after dark. You will need to be able to carry and move bundles of newspapers and have nimble fingers for doing the inserting. The rate of pay is per item inserted, so the faster you work, the more you make per hour. If you’re interested in being on the standby list, contact Greg Brown, Distribution Manager at the GC&M News office on 5438 7445.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Last Sunday, Sarah Widin and Frances Harper played dour tactical croquet resulting in a 7–3 win for Sarah. Clear blue skies and pleasantly warm weather made play on Thursday a treat. Ken Barker and Wendy Whitby played Nick Cram and Bev Sockhill in a friendly game of association where Ken left early. Then Bev played Wendy for the honours and ended up ahead, 10-7. Both players were coached by Ken and Nick, then Nick for the conclusion. On the first lawn Helen Andrews and Frances got into the serious business of preparing
for the Bray competition. Frances won this game 14-4. The discipline of stopping for afternoon tea at three is paying dividends with pleasant and refined conversation coming to the fore. Club participation is more than just hitting a ball around. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1pm for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Wet weather and bowls seems to be kindred souls in Maleny. The forecast was looking bleak but they got it wrong and what a wonderful morning greeted us on Wednesday. What a great night of bowls on Wednesday. Mobile Kingdom still managed to lead the field with their good form and capable replacements. At this point in time it seems they may be hard to run down. Well done to Steve, Tony and Mick in winning the toucher prizes. Some our regulars should be back this week from their sojourn in Tasmania. The club championship is moving into the second round for the men's singles. The ladies will be starting their competition after a delayed start. All the best to those folks involved in these games. Some great matches are booked for this section of the competition. Keep up to date by viewing results on the MBC app. Scroungers is still proving to be very popular with our bowlers. Some great games and it is excellent to see new folks enjoying this format of the game of bowls. Thanking you all for your support and staying on for members draw. This coming week we see the first of our school groups enjoying our facilities for 2018.
MBC had teams travel and support Kilcoy Bowls Club at their monthly fours. They played well and continued some good winning form. Unfortunately weather played a major role in no bowls at Mapleton on Monday for their monthly pairs. Nice drive in the drizzle and mist. Thanks guys in helping us keep those ever so important links with other Hinterland clubs. A reminder to all members to sign up for monthly pairs or our regular Tuesday bowls. A heads up to start thinking about nominations for club pairs which will follow the singles. Be in it to win it. Developments in the bar operation should see our first week of beer on tap. Come and check us out for a bowl, beer or barbeque, everyone is always welcome. Thinking of having a function, staff development activities, or a Christmas party? You name it – bowls, beers and a barbeque could be a fun option. Get in touch and we will try and make it work for your group. MBC is taking bookings for Christmas break ups for 2018. See you all on the green or in the clubhouse. Keep rolling up.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails ventured to Maroochydore to play the TTs. Although the scores didn’t indicate how well our girls played, we went down 46-23. Thanks to Sonia, Gerry, Janet and Christine. Whistlers played at Witta against Yandina Bush Turkeys. It was windy and the wind was cold, we made sure we had a good warm up before starting. And with the wind we all had to run extra to chase the ball. It was good tennis and we had good win, that was a bonus! Score was 41-30 games, 6-2 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats were also playing Yandina but at Yandina. The score was also the same 41-30, the only difference being the sets 5-3. A good and much needed win by the Wildcats team of Pauline, Stacey, Jenie and a big thanks to Barbara Tonk from Nambas completing the team. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Just for Laughs The only cow in a small town in Ireland stopped giving milk. The town folk found they could buy a cow in Scotland quite cheaply, and the purchase was made. It was absolutely wonderful, it produced lots of milk every day and everyone was happy. They bought a bull to mate with the cow to get more cows, so they'd never have to worry about their milk supply ever again. They put the bull in the pasture with the cow, but whenever the bull tried to mount the cow, the cow would move away. No matter what approach the bull tried, the cow would move away from the bull and he was never able to do the deed. The people were very upset, and decided to go to

All this means that you will have the ability to secure attention and favours, so use your initiative wisely. Communication is at a high point, so get your message across, seek agreements, or sign documents if money is involved. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 The New Moon is in the sign before yours, which is Taurus. The thing to note however is the planet Uranus also goes into Taurus and stays there for the next seven years! the vet, who was considered very wise, tell him what was happening, and ask his advice. They explained, "Whenever the bull tries to mount our cow, she moves away, it doesn’t matter if he approaches from the back, or the front, or from the side.” The vet rubbed his chin thoughtfully before asking, "Did you by chance, buy this cow in Scotland?" The people were dumbfounded, since no one had ever mentioned where the cow had come from. "You are truly a wise vet," they said. "How did you know we got the cow from Scotland?" The vet replied with a distant look in his eye, "My wife comes from Scotland." Contributed by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

LEO July 23 – August 22 The New Moon this week challenges you to set the sails on fresh business goals. As the planet Uranus has the possibility of putting on the brakes it would be wise not to overdue work or excessive physical energies as there is a pressure on your heart and circulation. Check to see that you are not working on overwrought nervous energies now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 If things have been running quietly, expect a new life cycle to emerge after the 16th as the New Moon, in Taurus, together with the planet Uranus, also in that sign, ushers in exciting exploration into different cultures and pleasure travel. Pay attention to progressive ways to amplify your health and wellbeing. You will make interesting business alliances. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 As this week ushers in the New Moon in Taurus, and the planet Uranus also enters that sign, this affects your sector of partner’s resources and intimate goals. There may be an abrupt change that suddenly happens about love and money. This abrupt change, or instability, can rock your security. Don’t make reckless investments now! SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 It is good for you to research and follow new trends. Be prepared now to get on board with a new one, which someone introduces to you. The New Moon in Taurus puts a special emphasis on ties with other people and public relations. Satisfy a thirst for knowledge that has a practical use. The weekend is excellent for making plans and thinking things through.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 A sudden decision or unexpected news can change the course of your future. Will it be with your love, romantic affairs, or with children? Uranus enters the Taurus practical sign for the next seven years and this, alongside the New Moon this week, means changes in your health needs are likely. Expect employment status to be unpredictable or inconsistent. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Mercury is joining with Uranus and so you may be feeling very playful as all this enters your pleasure sector. Therefore, express yourself, even by taking out some lottery tickets! Uranus can bring you sudden surprises, either bringing you better finances or an increase in children. Romantic affections can be too costly on various levels if out of control. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Uranus is the planet that rules your sign and now it is entering into the sign of Taurus for the next seven years! The sector of your lifestyle is your home, and that may become a roller coaster of new situations. Since Uranus is unpredictable, take precautions physically to avoid accidents. It just means focus ahead, ignoring distractions and not swinging from left to right. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The New Moon in Taurus helps you with making decisions, both short and long range. Travel and opportunities to have more fun are certainly around from this week and for the future. Personal interests are enhanced by the New Moon in Taurus, working with Venus, which is a vibration benefiting the home and family. Deal with all the practical issues. Have serious talks.

Business feature
Built Tough, Capable and Clever – It’s gotta be a CAN-AM The new Can-Am Defender side-by-side, with its Rotax V-twin motor comes in 500, 800 and 1000cc capacities. Proven to be best in its class for handling, comfort, suspension, hauling and towing. The Defender features traction control and huge 60L fuel tank making it superior to its competitors. For a limited time only, we are offering the added benefit of a 3 year unlimited warranty, free safety key and savings of up to $2000!* Safety is paramount and the free safety key gives you an added piece of mind when handing the keys to staff or family members. This feature gives you three options. The Work key limits top speeds to just 40kmh. The Standard key limits a driver to 70kmh and reduces torque output by 10%, while the Performance key has no speed or power restrictions at all. The Defender is one of the only SSVs available featuring a three seater bench seat, allowing the ability to carry extra cargo in the cabin.
