Hi Everyone

Well the life of a community newspaper editor is never dull and last Friday morning my schedule shows just how many things are happening in our local area. First up I got to visit Landsborough State School and take some photos at the official opening of their fabulous new hall. What a great facility and I have to say the lovely timber floors will definitely be a lot nicer for the kids to sit on during parades than the old concrete ones. After the school ceremony I went along to the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Beerwah RSL. Each year at the event, the Subbranch try to have someone or something different with the ceremony, and this year it was a speech delivered by the young Lieutenant Chris Maguire photographed on the front cover. He spoke of his great grandfather and his experience as a soldier in

the First World War and what it had meant to play his part in our country’s history. He spoke beautifully and there were quite a few tears wiped away from eyes after he spoke. From here I dropped into the home of Beerwah local Heather Rutherford to meet up with an inspiring young woman who is travelling on her own and is cycling 10,000 miles, across 15 countries, over six months (see the story on page 17). While she is doing the journey she is also raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Just another busy morning at GCNews. Regards,

Fast-food giant McDonald’s has lodged a notice of appeal over Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to reject an application for a 24-hour takeaway restaurant in Landsborough. Documents were lodged in the Brisbane Registry of the Planning and Environment Court on November 2, citing a variety of reasons for the appeal, including claims that the application is not contrary to the planning outcomes for the Landsborough Township Planning Area. Council announced its decision last month, stating numerous conflicts with its planning scheme for scrapping the plan. A spokesperson for McDonald’s said the appeal process would enable more rigorous discussion regarding the proposed restaurant and the numerous benefits it would deliver to the community. “McDonald’s restaurants are owned and operated by local business people, employ local residents, support local sports and community groups and are very much a part of the community fabric,” the spokesperson said. “As such, McDonald’s regularly adapts the design and branding of restaurants to ensure they complement the character of the communities in which they are located.” The spokesperson said McDonald’s was not currently investigating alternative sites.

Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz supported Council’s previous decision to refuse the application, saying there were much more suitable locations in the area that could be considered. She said she had previously identified Beerwah as a more appropriate location, as the region’s major centre. Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said the outcome was now a matter for the courts to decide. “Council has had its say and McDonald’s doesn’t agree with their decision, so now we have to let the legal system run its course,” Mr McArdle said. “However we have to be very mindful that townships like Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Mooloolah have their own heritage and character and do not need to be run by multi-national fast food outlets. “We need to focus on supporting local businesses and the individuality of these towns.”

Glass House Mountains resident Bob McLean said after spending 10 years working in and with the community, the time was now right to throw his hat in the ring as a candidate. “Throughout my years of community involvement I’ve been provided with many opportunities to assist the community to grow, and now I want to give my utmost to support those that have supported me,” Bob said. Since moving to the area in 2001, Bob, together with his family, has been involved with a number of local projects, including the annual Sustainability and Garden expo, which he oversaw from a small community event to what is expected to become a major regional event in 2013. He’s also had a long history of involvement with the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains and the Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce, has been instrumental in setting up the Glasshouse Country Menshed and Glasshouse Country Prostate cancer support group, remains an active member of the Beerwah Catholic and Anglican communities, is on the management committee of the Beerwah Sportsground Management committee and the Beerwah Community Cooperative formation team, and is a member of the Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society. Bob said his vision for division one is to create an environment where people want to work and live, and where there are work opportunities for all. “The whole southern end of the Sunshine Coast has a high density of dormancy, and my major focus is to provide whatever support is necessary

Bob McLean to encourage businesses to establish themselves in the area,” Bob said. He said taking a grassroots approach had heightened his obligation to listen to his constituents. “To me, being an effective representative is all about listening to what your constituents are asking, and forming partnerships with other elected members at state and federal level in order to achieve positive outcomes,” Bob said. Another of Bob’s visions for the local area is the further development of the necessary infrastructure to attract more visitors and travellers. “In my view, we need to create a relationship with the CMCA (Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia) so that Glasshouse Country becomes a motorhome and caravan friendly destination,” Bob said. He said the upgrades to the facilities at Gowinta were a positive start to that goal. “I want to encourage more industries to division one, as I believe it has the greatest potential across the coast, while at the same time working with our primary producers to ensure the best, most sustainable, outcome for all.” Visit Bob's website at www.bobmclean-div1.com.au or contact Bob on 0427 606 240.

Elimbah Community Fun Day On Saturday, November 19 at 2.00pm, the Elimbah Sports and Recreation grounds (off Rose Creek Road) will come alive with stalls, barbeques, novelty events, displays, a history tent and plenty of opportunity to kick back and relax in the beautiful outdoors of Elimbah! This fun community day is being planned by a small team of local representatives from community groups in Elimbah, to provide an opportunity for the residents of Elimbah to meet, mingle and mix with one another in a relaxed setting. It is hoped that there will be sufficient interest to warrant the day becoming an annual event. A gold coin donation to the local Elimbah firies as you enter the parking area will help get you into the spirit of the community. There will be plenty of soft drink, snacks and sausages for sale throughout the day. You can strike up a conversation with our local friendly farmers who will be manning the barbeques, and entertainment will be provided by local residents and groups and

the novelty events will provide everyone with the chance for some good old fashioned fun! Help name the road that runs off Rose Creek Road into the Elimbah Sports Grounds! You can enter by completing a form and dropping into bins located at Elimbah General Store, Elimbah State School Administration or Elimbah Co-Op by close of business November 16. The top five finalists will be announced from 6.30pm at Elimbah Sports Grounds at the fun day, prior to the open air movie, ‘Hoodwinked Too’, which will be screened on dark thanks to the generosity of our local Moreton Bay Regional Council. The event concludes at 9.00pm. Without the generous support of the Caboolture Sports Club who have provided funds from their Community Chest program for the event, and donations from Cr Adrian Raedel (MBRC) the day would not have been possible. We are also grateful to local businesses Pumicestone Sand and Gravel, Beachmere Fibreglass, NickBuilt Concreting, Schaplands Swim School, Elimbah State School P and C, Beaurepaires and Caboolture Lions JAFC for their financial support. Local member Andrew Powell has also provided financial support for the day.

Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy grants closing soon If you are a member of a local community group, there’s still time left to apply for a grant from the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy’s Community Grant Program. Now in its fifth year, the grants are a valuable funding source for community groups, and a proud initiative the pharmacy has been

generous enough to continue. Ruth Verner from Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy said all local community groups were eligible to apply for the funding, which could be used for projects such as new equipment or infrastructure. Last year’s grateful recipients included the Mooloolah BMX club, and the Glasshouse Hinterland AFL club.

Leanne and Jules McAllister, Gloria Hammond and Stephen Baggley are part of the team behind Saturday's big event So set Saturday, November 19 aside on your calendar and bring the family down to the sportsgrounds for a fun family day out. Commemorations and celebrations mark November 11 While it was a day of commemoration for many, Friday, November 11 was also a day of celebration for a number of local residents. Last week we brought you the story of Peachester’s Tayla Hunn, who celebrated her 11th birthday on Friday, and it would seem she wasn’t alone in celebrating a special occasion on such a special day. Sharing the date are two Glass House Mountain couples who both celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries on the same day. Frank and Barbara Perry, who were married on November 11, 1961 at the All Saints Church of England at Wickham Terrace, Brisbane, celebrated their golden anniversary with a function on Saturday night at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. The event was highlighted by a surprise visit from their daughter and son-inlaw, who are currently travelling around Australia.

Frank and Barbara Perry Other guests travelled far and wide to help mark the occasion, including their grandsons, who are based at Enogerra, and who both head off to Afghanistan in the New Year. On Sunday, David and Enid Eccles also marked their 50th anniversary on Friday. The pair, who have lived at Glasshouse all their married life, exchanged vows at St Matthews Church

David and Enid Eccles of England, Grovely (Mitchelton). They met as members of the Junior Farmers Organisation, and celebrated their special day with family and friends at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at a function on Sunday.

An anniversary of change

One of the first things that Mt Mellum residents Craig and Linda Young did after fires raged through the area in 1991 was to organise a public meeting with a view to setting up a rural fire brigade in Landsborough. Twenty years later, the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade continues to grow and expand, and will this weekend celebrate its 20th anniversary with a special day of celebration on Sunday, kicking off from 11.30am. Craig, who was one of the inaugural members of the brigade, is today the first officer, a position he has held for the past nine years. He reflects on the growth of the brigade over the past 20 years. “One of the biggest changes over the years has definitely been the way we’ve been funded,” Craig said. “When we started up the brigade 20 years ago, we had to rely entirely on donations from the community. Today, Council’s fire levy supports all the rural fire brigades across the Sunshine Coast,

A younger Craig Young and fellow members of the brigade in earlier years

Dental Excel is proud to be a part of the MARLEY DENTAL GROUP

First Officer Craig Young which means we are now able to boast state of the art equipment, and excellent communication facilities,” Craig said. Craig said another significant change was the role women have played in the brigade. “In the early days, women took on more of a logistical role, but today, we now have five female brigade members, and they do a fantastic job. “Really, the success of our brigade can be attributed to the women who have always worked behind the scenes, the wives and partners of our members, and it’s great to see how that role has changed and expanded, where women now work alongside us, and remain highly valued members of our brigade.” For a first hand insight into the brigade’s growth and development, come along to the open day this Sunday, November 20, from 11.30am at the station in Maleny Street, Landsborough. The official ceremony, which will include the presentation of 15 year service medals, will start at 1.30pm.

New buildings for Landsborough School Landsborough State School last week held it’s opening for the completion of its new Multipurpose Hall and Resource Centre under Building Education Revolution. The Australia Government has provided $2,125,000 to Landsborough State School for National School Pride building refurbishments and classroom upgrades, Primary Schools for the 21st Century under the Building the Education Revolution. “The new multipurpose hall has given the school a wonderful space to hold parades, discos, arts councils, awards nights, indoor PE lessons and community events to name but a few,” principal Kristy Walton said.

“The new resource centre is fresh and vibrant and is now the centre piece of the school. The students, staff and families just love the new buildings, and love being in these spaces. There is a wonderful energy with the children when you are with them in there.” The opening also provided a wonderful atmosphere to incorporate Remembrance Day celebrations. The students, guests and family members all remembered the fallen with a minutes silence, whilst reflecting on the history of the past welcoming the celebrations of the future.

Toe tapping fun at bush dance On Saturday, October 29, many Beerwah Kindy families and friends turned out to enjoy the annual Bush Dance at the Beerwah Community Hall. A big thank you to Brett Linesay who graciously donated his time to expertly call the bush dances and to the many local businesses who donated raffle prizes.

Gabrielle Urbahn, Maverick Casey, Danielle Urbahn, Shaila Casey, Lexie Morrison, Lottie Morrison

The children have continued on the bush dance theme at Kindy by having an Australian bush day. Julie from Bee Happy Puppets also visited recently, talking about using manners and how special and unique they all are. Just a reminder that we are celebrating our 50th anniversary next year and are looking for any stories (verbal or written), and old paper clippings or photos. Please email them to us at beerwahkindy@aapt.net.au or drop them into the Kindy on your way past. Finding out about the Kindy’s history is turning out to be a bit of a mystery, so if you can help in ANY way, please contact us.

From Morgan Winlaw Glasshouse Country Christian College correspondent

The Big Change Change is scary. Change is different. But sometimes, change is definitely what is needed. And change is definitely in the air. The jacarandas have begun to bloom, signifying the beginning of the end for Year 12 students all over Queensland. Over the past weeks, our whiteboard countdown of how many school days left has gradually decreased and the mixed emotions are swiftly kicking in. Some are excited, eager to breakout into celebration mode and get a decent amount of sleep. Others, however, have had their celebratory thoughts affected by the uncertainty of what lies ahead. Despite these fears, this change is inevitable. And when you think about it – who would really want to stay in high school for the rest of their lives? Relearning the mathematics behind z-scores and watching your Principal grow old (apologies Mr Curtis) doesn’t sound particularly appealing. So to the apprehensive graduates of 2011, although this change is understandably scary it can be incredibly exciting and invigorating at the same moment. Perhaps it’s time to take a hold of it, grab it, embrace it and take a leap into the unknown. As I hold my breath and prepare to take that leap, I would like to express my appreciation for the opportunity I’ve had to share my (what have been at times), tangential thoughts with you all. Congratulations Class of 2011! See you all after the jump!

Character in concert at GCCC

‘It’s all about Character’ was the theme of the upper primary concert at Glasshouse Country Christian College recently. Years 3 to 6 took the audience on a colourful and musical journey that began with friends dancing side by side and ended with a dramatic performance by 6M using mood lighting to create ‘The big picture’. In between these two concert items, Year 3M acted out ‘The Proud Emu’, Year 4G retold ‘The Man from Snowy River’ (without horses), and Year 4M rapped their way to ‘Get you a Bible’. A highlight was Year 6G’s cheeky performances imitating well known advertisements. They somehow managed to get hold of the Coles’ giant red hands and sang the jingle in the aisles of IGA! Cudos to Beerwah IGA for their sense of humour and wonderful community spirit! Whether it was by humour or serious drama, the GCCC students showed that they know what good character is all about.

Year 6M created an artistic jigsaw as the audience watched and then turned the pieces upside down to reveal the previously hidden picture of Jesus www.gcnews.com.au

Building Beerwah to a bright future

As reported in last week’s GCNews, Council is working with the Beerwah community on stage one of a four year Place Making project, as Beerwah grows to become a Major Activity Centre in the Sunshine Coast. As such, Council is very keen to hear your ideas, hopes and dreams for Beerwah. What do you love? What would you like to see improved? What is your vision for a brighter future? This is a great opportunity for community members of all ages to get involved and work closely with council to help plan for the future. Community engagement has commenced and council staff are out and about in Beerwah and surrounding towns, meeting with a variety of folk, including community groups, school kids, young mums, business owners and more. So far, the response has been very enthusiastic, with plenty of great suggestions already being made. It’s obvious there is loads of passion out there for Beerwah and its surrounds. There are lots of opportunities for you to have your say. Complete a survey (online or print) – surveys are available in the library or on council’s website under ‘Have your say’, or make a comment on an online discussion forum at http://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/place. Alternatively, give the project managers a call, and they will arrange a time to come and meet with you and your group. Phone them on 5441 8616. You can also come along to the tree give-away day this Saturday, November 19 from 8.00am – 10.00am at Mill Park in Simpson Street, or to a community forum at the Beerwah Community Hall on Wednesday, November 23 from 9.30am – 12.30pm.

Doing Business

Five minutes with ….. Les and Marji Nicholls of Sandy Creek Organic Farm

At Sandy Creek Organic Farm we supply fresh organic food at a reasonable price. We do this through community supported agriculture, which is a system that enables producers such as ourselves to share the risks and rewards of farming with our customers. Customers pay a monthly or seasonal fee up front for a weekly box of vegetables, herbs and spices which is mostly harvested the day it is collected. In a good season, everyone is fat and happy. However, when the weather plays up or difficulties arise, everyone is a little thinner, though we hope they are still happy. Our produce is the freshest possible outside of your own garden. It is almost all grown at Sandy Creek Organic Farm in Beerwah, the only exception being potatoes, which we get from Bauer’s Organic Farm at Gatton. It is certified organic through Australian Certified Organic, Queensland’s own organic certifier and Australia’s largest. Through regular contact with the farm, weekly newsletters, and frequent open days we also bring people into contact with life on the farm. Sandy Creek Organic Farm is 30 hectares of beautiful Glasshouse Mountains countryside crossed by several creeks and we hope to build up our business such that the farm can always be there to provide food to our local community. We set up Sandy Creek Organic Farm in 2002, when we moved from our farm a few kilometres south near the Glasshouse Lookout. We have been farming organically for 16 years, and over the years, we have increasingly developed the land for food production, and there is more to come. We have set aside about 20 per cent of the farm for nature. It has been great to see that it is possible to grow good food while allowing nature to also have its space. Sandy Creek Organic Farm is located at 2471 Old Gympie Road, between Beerwah and Glass House. Please call in and see us or phone us on 5496 9501 or email: sandycreekorganic@bigpond.com

Club of Glasshouse Mountains Community Group Updates Rotary Solomon Islands – A Trip to Remember

Glasshouse Mountains Toastmasters Contributed by Martine Goedhart

Shhhh. Come closer. Don’t tell, but I’m about to expose the biggest secret in Toastmasters. For a lot of Toastmasters, membership is about getting over the fear of public speaking. For some, it’s about reducing ahs and ums. For others it’s about improving their ability to manage a team or lead a meeting. While it’s important, of course, to learn all of those things, almost all Toastmasters will tell you that opportunities for meeting new friends are also important. It can be uncomfortable to start a conversation or join a group of people. As I looked around at a big get together just recently, too many people were talking on mobile phones or reading the program. I realised many of those people were probably just trying to look busy so they could avoid the discomfort of speaking to someone new. I’m not a really shy person but still felt uncomfortable walking up to people I didn’t know. I could only imagine how uneasy more reserved or introverted individuals might feel. I decided to ‘assume the burden of other people’s comfort’ and began a conversation with a very nice but somewhat nervous lady. She seemed startled at first but then opened up and we had a lovely conversation. Some tips on how to start a conversation: • Don’t wait to start until you need something… start today. Increase your visibility now. • Assume the burden of other people’s comfort. Come prepared with topics you can discuss and questions to ask. • Learn each person’s name. If you don’t think you understood it properly, repeat it. Taking the time to learn and repeat a person’s name in conversation demonstrates respect. • Don’t get too personal. Asking a tactful question like ‘what keeps you busy outside of work?’ gives them the chance to reveal what they wish about themselves. • Respect differences. When talking to people from different countries, let them lead. Model your behaviour after theirs (eye contact, handshakes, etc.) to respect any cultural differences. • Give a full response. If someone asks you a question, try not to respond with a bland ‘good’. Elaborate to give them something they can connect with. We meet every second and fourth Thursday of the month in the hall of Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah. You can Google us on the net, in the address bar on the top. www.glasshousetoastmasters.org You can call us on 5496 9855 for Martine or 5494 0161 to talk to Kerry. We love to hear from you.

Beerwah Red Hat Revellers Well ladies the year had almost slipped away, and on Friday, November 25 we will celebrate the festive season with a lunch at Beerwah Hotel. It is a dress up representing a song day, so should be good fun, our Queen Josephine would like members to confirm attendance. Please meet at the hotel at 11.30am approximately. This is our last meeting this year so we wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday season. We are always happy to meet new ladies and welcome them to our group. Any enquiries to Josephine 5408 0250.

By Pippa Bensley

I travelled to the Solomon Islands with six Rotary members and met two others from the team on arrival. I found out that we were to put up solar panels at the schools and provide electricity for power points and several overhead lights. We also had books and learning aids to take to the schools, there we would continue the work of previous Rotarians setting up the libraries in these schools. We also had medical supplies for the clinics in some of the villages. Previous missions had erected toilets and water tanks in the villages, and some aspects of these works had to be completed. The Solomon Islands is made up of over 900 islands and lies close to the equator. Water, electricity, and sanitation are not always available. The water tanks and toilets that Rotary install and provide make a big difference to the lives of the village people. They appreciate it so much and constantly show their appreciation to Rotary team members. Sadly, one of our party died suddenly, from a heart attack, on the night of October 17. Jim Adam, a member of the Caloundra Rotary Club, was a colorful man, very much-loved by the children of the villages, and greatly respected by his team mates. We as a group were devastated for Jim's family, and we knew we had to contact them immediately, as well as care for Jim's body, returning him home as soon as possible. Trevor Taylor, of the Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains, our trip leader and organiser, travelled home with his old friend as he left the island the next day. The morning after Jim's death, the courtyard of our hotel was jam packed with elders and chiefs and ministers and teachers, men and women from the villages, they had come to share with us and to show their compassion and support. They were grief stricken that this man who had come from so far to give aid and support to them and to their children was taken so suddenly. We intend to erect a plaque on the island in his memory. Also on this trip we provided television, a DVD and a CD player, and two computers; all of these things went to schools on remote islands. The people on the Islands love Rotarians, and if they know who you are, will shake your hand in the street, at the markets, at the airports, in the hotels and anywhere at all. Rotary is an organisation with the truest intention to make the lives of the people easier and more comfortable, to bring them clean water and sanitation, to help with the education and the health care of the children and to show by example goodwill and universal accord. I would like to thank Rotary for giving me the opportunity to experience life and to learn from it. I will never be the same person as the one who left Australia two weeks ago. I have seen happy children and devoted parents and the villages that raise those children. I have seen an ocean so clear and so blue that I felt it in my soul and smiles from children that would light up the rooms brighter than the televisions. I am home, I am safe Pippa with children of and I am more. the Solomon Islands In memory of Jim.

Beerwah Lions

Contributed by Una Robinson

Lions Christmas Cakes and puddings These are now out with our various community outlets, check this edition of Glasshouse Country News for one near you. Lions recycle for sight program A box containing some 200 donated eyeglasses has recently been packed off to the Lions eyeglass recycle centre at Redcliffe. Heartfelt thanks from Beerwah Lions members to Beerwah Optometrists and other collection points for receiving old spectacles. In doing so, you have helped a person somewhere in the world to gain some sight that otherwise they may never have had. Local collection points include Community Recycling Roberts Road, Landsborough Pharmacy, Beerwah Optometrists and Glasshouse Pharmacy or any Lions Club member. There are 13 Lions eyeglass recycle centres in the world, we have one near us at Redcliffe. These spectacles are cleaned, then graded using a special Lensometer machine, then packed in various gradings with sun glasses and sent out as required. Small bits such as screws and nose pieces from damaged eyeglasses are packaged up as spare parts. Redcliffe is the nearest to receive and process recycled eyeglasses from Japan, India and other countries in that area. Beerwah Lions Recycled Cans Project Cash for Cans Beerwah Lions collects recycled aluminium cans, old batteries etc, at the Beerwah Co-op from 8.30am - 11.00am every first Saturday of the month. These items are sold on with all funds raised going to support worthy projects. This is also a great clean up exercise within the community so get your children and grandchildren involved collecting. Guest speaker On November 9 Lion Bob Banner introduced Queensland Air Museum president Cliff Robinson, accompanied by his wife Yvonne, who were welcomed to the Lions meeting as guest speakers. Briefly the Air Museum has its origins from way back in 1973; it is a rather long story. It has relocated on several occasions with some considerable disassembling and re assembling of various and numerous aircraft in the collection. Now located at Caloundra, but over the years there were rejected offers of sites at Redcliffe (3/4” above high tide), and Longreach, which was a bit too far away. Aircraft with long and fascinating histories have been collected from areas such as Evans Head in NSW, South Australia, Sentosa Island in Singapore and the USA with some very fascinating stories as to how they were transported and eventually arrived. Watch out for the F1-11! The museum is the largest by number of aircraft and has 226 members of whom around 40 are volunteers. They spend many voluntary hours working on the assembling etc of the old aircraft. An event to attend is the annual open cockpit day, attracting over 4,000 visitors. This is their major fundraising event; watch the papers for a date. The museum is open 10.00am - 4.00pm daily except for Christmas day. Lion Max Pinwill proposed a vote of thanks which was loudly applauded following such an interesting presentation. Thanks to Cliff from the Queensland Air Museum in Caloundra. Activities During October Lions members were busy assisting other organisations; the Farmers Golf Day, Peachester School’s 100th anniversary, Landsborough Primary school car boot sale, Hot Rod and Bike show, and cooking at a camp out for Wildlife Warriors on Fraser Road. We have coming up a cook up at the ABC Learning Centre on December 6, then we celebrate the silly season with a club get together on December 10 when the art raffle for the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation at Greenslopes Hospital will be drawn. Past club members and friends are invited to attend this Christmas celebration, please contact a club member. www.gcnews.com.au

Withdrawal from election race

To all my friends and supporters, after a great deal of thought I must advise you all that I have decided to withdraw from the council election race. Over recent weeks I have come to realise that I just don't have that necessary passion that I see in our current elected officials which in my view is part of the job. I do believe I could have achieved good outcomes for the electorate however I just don't believe that if elected I could have given the job 100 per cent and in my view that would be letting everybody down and I value you all too much to do that. So thank you very much for your support and I look forward to catching up with you all. Kel McNamara, Glass House Mountains

Re: Unity Water Profit

I was astounded to find out that Unity Water’s profit was $68 million when so many of us are struggling to make ends meet. I don’t understand why Sunshine Coast Council found it was not financially viable to take back responsibility for the water supply. It is beyond belief that the CEO of

Unity Water’s salary is $367,000 per year. Another enigma is why there is no pensioner time payment scheme. No wonder the headline I read said ‘Water is gold’. Hope you publish this because a lot of people feel strongly about this. Sylvia Rice, Landsborough

Garden lots up for sale

My garden has been admired by many people over the years. It’s now the time for it all to go to other garden lovers. So lots will be for sale on November 19. Do come along and see for yourself after 6.00am at 9 Hempstock Street, Glass House Mountains Del Davis, Glass House Mountains

Peachester Range

Like most Peachester citizens, I’m wondering just when the Range Road is finally going to be repaired. The current situation is frustrating and dangerous. You’ve only got to encounter a long line up at the traffic light on the top side, to be stopped right on the corner with very little visibility behind you, while you hope against hope that a heavy vehicle doesn’t suddenly come around the corner. With all due respect to the Minister responsible for getting this road repaired, I’d point out that the 10 months elapsed so far waiting for this road to be repaired is getting beyond a joke. I’m uncertain how Queensland vehicle registration costs compare with other states, but I imagine Peachester motorists are paying enough to be entitled to better service than this. Again with due respect Minister, whether you rebuild the slippage, or simply realign the road at this point, I think it’s time you gave Peachester residents a fair go by publishing a definite time frame for getting the repair carried out. In the meantime, you might like to consider giving Peachester vehicle owners a one off worthwhile discount on their registration costs to partially compensate for the time we’ve all spent waiting for that red-light to change. Bob Banner, Peachester

One Council, Two Standards

Council is letting the Glasshouse Country communities down. It's obvious that Sunshine Coast Council is delivering two standards of maintenance for its public spaces: a high level for urban areas like Caloundra, a low level for our Glasshouse Country townships. Because of the January floods, our communities have been very understanding in accepting that the extreme weather shifted the priorities to repairs. But that excuse is way past its use-by-date when they can clearly deliver high standards of maintenance in urban suburbs around the division. There are many examples. Take a drive for yourself and compare the poor standards along Caloundra Road leading into Landsborough or the roughly finished and weedlined Simpson Street (practically a botanical gardens as you approach to the overpass). This is not just a bit of overgrown grass. Poor maintenance reflects badly on us, it encourages anti-social behaviour and vandalism and finally it says if we don't care about ourselves why should anyone else? Remarkably, this is happening in townships that are the gateways to our region's best natural assets in the Glasshouse Mountains. Our townships need to become destinations in their own right and a vital first step is pride in ourselves through our public spaces. Come on Sunshine Coast Council, we need you to deliver the same standard of maintenance right across the region and right now that means some serious catch-up work is required around the Glasshouse Country communities. If elected as a councillor I will make sure Council holds up standards and then together we just might make winning a tidy towns award a possibility again. You can hold me to it; in fact let’s make it a ‘blood oath’ as that seems to be the political requirement right now! Rick Baberowski, Division 1 Candidate Beerwah

Asking the questions Hello, I am Steve Ralph, Tourist operator of the Australian Teamsters Hall of Fame, Glass House Mountains. I have been living in Glass House Mountains for over 22 years, and during that time I have been involved in many local issues. At the next council election in March 2012 we’ll definitely see our area have a new Councillor and I would like to ask the candidates of Division 1 their views on what they can do constructively for this community. I have seen a lot of unfinished projects of safety and second rate standard for Division One. I also believe a higher standard and vision is desperately needed. Questions 1. Do the candidates feel that Glass House Mountains centre upgrade is complete? 2. Is access to Glass House railway station for vehicular and pedestrian movements satisfactory? 3. Is parking at the school for student set down and pick up adequate and safe? 4. Is access from the township to Steve Irwin Way (Glasshouse Tourist Route) safe and acceptable? I will also be asking questions in the coming weeks for all the other township communities in Division 1 and I look forward to hearing the candidate’s responses to these questions. www.gcnews.com.au

Christmas for the Troops I encourage readers to prepare Christmas gift packages to send to Australian troops serving overseas. There are almost 4,500 Australian soldiers based overseas who will spend Christmas away from their families, and the ‘Christmas for the Troops 2011’ programme gives ordinary citizens a chance to make their time away a little more enjoyable. Christmas is a season for spending quality time with loved ones and for those who are serving Australia in overseas postings, in challenging surroundings, being away from their loved ones is doubly difficult. The Christmas gift programme gives us a chance to say thanks to the troops, to let them know we are thinking of them and we appreciate their efforts, and to give them a gift package that aims to bring a smile to their face. For details visit my website www.peterslippermp.com.au

Fisher Australia Day Awards Nominations are invited for the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards 2012. This is the 13th annual holding of the awards, which were started in 2000 by me to provide an opportunity to recognise those who work to make a positive difference in their community. Nominations can be made for a variety of endeavours, from community services, industry and commerce, the arts and sport. Nominees will also be considered for the prestigious Fisher Citizen of the Year, the Fisher Junior Citizen of the Year and the Wortley Youth Encouragement award. Community organisations can be nominated for the Des Scanlan Memorial award. Nominations for this award are open to all community organisations doing valuable, and often unrecognised, work in the Fisher electorate. Nomination forms are available from my office or by phoning 5444 4888. Nominations close on December 16.

Highway widening Those wishing to sign my petition calling for the widening of the Bruce Highway between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast to six lanes can sign it at my office at Buddina or at the office of Andrew Powell MP at Maleny.

From Mark McArdle State member for Caloundra. Phone: 5491 2780 Local pineapple farmers have told me they’ve experienced a slight delay in getting pineapples into stores, but the good news is that this week there should be plenty available. A combination of extremely cold and wet weather may have contributed to pineapples taking longer to ripen this year, putting our local growers behind schedule. Some have said in the 40 years they’ve been in the industry this year has been a very bizarre pattern for pineapple growers and many cannot wait for the warmer weather to arrive. We have local growers in Glass House and surrounding areas who are a big part of our agriculture industry, and I’d encourage everyone to support our local farmers and purchase their sweet pineapples. A number of farmers have again raised the issue of the threat of imported pineapples from Malaysia, which they find concerning considering farmers in Queensland supply the whole of Australia. The message is simple, if we live local, we should buy local. There really is nothing better than eating some of our home-grown produce.

Birds hold a fascination for most of us. So it is not surprising that they are often a subject for photographs. On a recent trip to Yamba in NSW I took several shots of seagulls, but it was this one that was so captivating with the one seagull looking curiously back at the camera. Taken in the late afternoon on a Panasonic DMC G10 camera, aperture 5.6, focal length 200mm,

Send some Christmas cheer to our troops Member for Fisher and Deputy Speaker Peter Slipper is encouraging locals to prepare Christmas gift packages to send to Australian troops serving overseas. Mr Slipper said there are almost 4,500 Australian soldiers based overseas who will spend Christmas away from their families, and the ‘Christmas for the Troops 2011’ programme gives ordinary citizens a chance to make their time away a little more enjoyable. Australia Post is offering FREE postage for care packages of up to two kilograms, to all Australian Forces Postal Offices. Ideally, the care package should be packed in an Australia Post ‘BM’ size postage box, costing around $2.00. The packages should be securely taped, clearly labelled for a male or female soldier, or for an explosive detection dog, and then delivered to any Australia Post outlet. Those lodging packages will need to fill out customs forms. Packages can be sent to soldiers stationed in the Middle East (including Afghanistan), explosives dogs in Afghanistan, East Timor and the Solomon Islands. Packages must be lodged before Monday,

December 5 (for the Middle East) and Friday, December 9 (for other destinations). Suggested items to include are non-aerosol deodorant, non-aerosol shaving cream, talcum powder, disposable razors, shower gel, lip balm, perfume (not glass), food items like dried noodles, biscuits, lollies, small tined items, magazines, puzzle books, DVDs, socks, letters of support, and a stamped self-addressed envelope to allow the solder to write back with thanks. For the dogs, items can include: dog biscuits, dried beef bones, toys like tennis balls and treats for their handlers. Alternately, local residents may wish to send an email of support to the troops: the address is messagestothetroops@defence.gov.au Senders should include their name, suburb and state at the top of the email and be aware the email may be published on Defence websites and social media sites. Personal details of the sender are not published. For postal addresses for care packages, visit Mr Slipper’s website at: www.peterslippermp.com.au/

Epic cycling journey comes to town Glass House is a long way from China. It’s even further when you are making the journey on a bicycle. That is exactly what English triathlete Charlotte Roach is doing. Last week, Charlotte made a pit stop in Beerwah as part of her six month, 10,000 mile journey from China to England, raising funds for the air ambulance. In 2009, Charlotte suffered extensive injuries during a training ride in the UK, and credits the air ambulance for saving her life. So in July this year, Charlotte set off from Beijing, China to commence her epic quest. Whilst in Australia, Charlotte is donating any funds raised to the Royal Australian Flying Doctors Service. www.gcnews.com.au

Out and About

Op Shop art

Contributed by Chris Bell Nessie Pratten’s display of Wagga’s (blankets made from old t-shirts, jumpers, and woollen scraps of material bought at op shops) plus rag mats, wall hangings made from scraps of material and old clothing, cushion covers made from men’s ties (via the Op Shop) lace and crocheted work, plus many other unique items, brought an interested crowd to Glasshouse Country Uniting Church last month. Following a sumptuous outdoor morning tea everyone moved inside the church to be kept spellbound as Nessie related the stories behind her ‘creations’. Starting at the age of 10 with ‘craft’ lessons from her grandmother and leaving school at 13, Nessie has worked hard all her life and still always has a craft item ‘on the go’. At the age of 92 she encourages her ‘carers’ to help her in her quest for Op Shop finds to help with her creations while they do her housework. Thanks Nessie for a great morning.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

One of the things that is common to all humans is a craving for sweet things. A long time ago that craving drove our ancestors to look for sweet fruit, berries and honey as it occurred naturally in the environment. These things contain valuable nutrients for the human body but took some effort to get and were not available all the time. Some time ago that all changed when we developed the skill to refine sugar. Now, our craving for sweet things can be filled very easily and without effort. If we abuse the use of these sweet things, health problems can result. Without effort this craving is now easily fulfilled and unless controlled can be destructive. In some ways this is like the culture that we now live in. We want instant gratification without putting any effort into the things we want. We seek instant happiness in the misuse of alcohol and other drugs. We seek instant wealth through gambling. We elect politicians who promise us the world with out considering the long term effects of these promises that they are unlikely to keep

anyway. Companies seek instant pay off through mergers and acquisitions rather than considering the needs of the community in which they work. We live in a generation that wants whatever it is now. However, we know that anything worth doing takes time, effort, commitment, struggle, correction and self control. It takes some faith to have this view of life. Some occupations are like that. A good teacher has to be in love with the process of planting the seed but will often not be around to see how the seed grew. Being a parent is also like that. While there is some gratification along the way, being a parent takes time, effort, commitment and correction. The Christian life is somewhat like that. The Christian life requires a faith in God that takes time to develop and grow. It is as we discover who we are in God that we taste the sweetness of God’s love for all people. You cannot have the sweetness without the substance. There is a sense in which Christianity or God is nobody’s quick fix yet it provides us with wholeness and fulfillment in our lives.

RENOVATE OR RELOCATE? As your family grows, so too will your need for space. At some point many families must decide whether to renovate or relocate, but a closer look at the cost to move could have you reaching for the toolbox. Run the figures It’s valuable to examine your needs and the costs associated with renovating versus buying a bigger home. If you opt to upgrade, depending on the level at which you were buying and selling, the associated costs can add up to between $50,000 to $60,000 www.gcnews.com.au

– and that’s just on the median house price. This is before you include the price of the new property itself. Once you add up the real estate agent’s commission, advertising, auction and legal costs, stamp duty and the cost to move – depending on the value of the properties you’re buying and selling, you could be out of pocket by a considerable sum. The cost may have you rethinking your existing home’s potential for renovation. Seek advice We speak about this with

many of our clients who are considering moving house or upgrading their existing home.

SECRETS OF A GOOD MORTGAGE BROKER! A good broker can help you to understand the various loan deals that are on offer, explaining the features that can make a big difference to your repayments.

The question to ask yourself is: All costs considered, is it better to stay put, renovate and potentially boost your existing home’s capital value, or does the cost justify the move?

Your broker will also lodge your application. Nowadays this is often done electronically saving time.

Taking the time to review these figures is helpful in supporting clients to make a well-informed decision.

Call Adviser Teresa Harrison. There are many considerations T: 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

borrowers make when faced with any property purchase decision. The advice and guidance of an experience mortgage broker can be invaluable.

Your broker will even chase your application with the lender. So your broker is more than your advisor, they are your single point of contact for the whole process – and they do most of the work for you! Using a mortgage broker can result in saving time and money.

Interest rate cut well overdue

The decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia to cut the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.5 per cent recently was long overdue, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). The September quarter inflation figures shows that inflation is well and truly contained at 2.3 per cent and was quite possibly benign from earlier this year if temporary upward spikes, such as from this year’s natural disasters, had been removed. “Anyone working within the property industry in Queensland knew months ago that our economy was far from running away from us, which was contrary to the Reserve Bank’s assessment at the time,” REIQ chairman Pamela Bennett said. “There is no question that this interest rate cut must be passed on in full by lenders given one year ago today they were the ones who all but doubled the Reserve’s last upward adjustment. That move no doubt caused unnecessary stress to some home and business owners so it is only fair that they now unwind this undue financial pressure.”

Bromeliad Society Inc.

Contributed by Bob McLean on behalf of the Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc When you drive around our beautiful Glasshouse Country you can see fields of Bromeliad Ananas cosmosus more commonly known as Pineapples. This plant was discovered by the Spanish explorers and being cultivated by the Indian population on the island of Guadaloupe in the West Indies. Columbus brought the plant back to the Spanish Court where it soon became very popular. From there it rapidly spread throughout the more tropical parts of the world during the early sixteenth century. The pineapple now has numerous hybrids which have been produced to suit the market needs. The more ornamental bromeliad Ananas also has several hybrid plants with the photos telling their own story. This little variety, often called Ananas nanus, is sometimes available as plants, but can also be purchased from florists who use the cute little pineapples in flower arrangements. The top of these can be grown on, as seen in the commercial. The foliage of the Ananas is what I call a very angry plant with it long strappy leaves edged with sharp spines 5 to 10 mm long. They are not a friendly plant to work with, but do have a place if you require a secure perimeter for your property. The hook like barbs will dig in and brake off. The very showy fruit will provide a powerful feature in your garden. 1 Flower/fruit at

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Babingtonia virgata ‘Miniature’ form This small rounded form of the ever popular formerly named Baeckea virgata is a wonderful little shrub to use in a garden. Currently its lush green rounded form is exploding with small white flowers that are very attractive. This great native plant looks excellent in a mixed native

garden and even better incorporated into a Japanese themed garden where it takes on a great bonsai look. Used around rocks or next to water features this small shrub to 1.5m high by 2m wide is ornamentally stunning. It does best in full sun and performs well in a range of soil types.

If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Email: gogreenrainforest@bigpond.com

The Hurricanes were always going to be a force to be reckoned with as they swept through this season’s competition undefeated. Last Wednesday night they met reigning champions The Swifts. Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Glenview/Mooloolah Tennis Club

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

We have had a quiet year in our club. The wet weather earlier in the year prevented our teams from competing in the relevant competitions. After having said that, our junior teams did fairly well with Div 4B Mooloolah Valley Magic team making the semis and our Div 3B Mooloolah Valley Marvels losing the grand final on sets and tying on games. Well done teams and better luck with the current season. We have four teams entered in the current season which finishes in March 2012. The Monday night adult fixtures have just finished and are playing the final series. Both of our teams Div 2 Mungrals and Div 4 Mystics finished second. Good luck in the finals. Recently, Carolyn Forrer, one of our club members, won the Southern Downs Open Ladies Championships. During the tournament she didn’t lose any sets and she was over the moon with her win. Congratulations Carolyn, keep up the good work. Christmas break up Our Christmas break up for both the junior and senior players will be on Sunday, November 27. The senior players to start at 1.00pm for a game of tennis and the juniors at 3.00pm for some fun and games. A sausage sizzle will follow. Please bring a plate of food to help with the catering. AGM It is that time of the year again for our AGM. Please think about helping out the committee by considering some kind of support, either by being a committee member or trying a position on the executive. The meeting will be on November 27 at 3.00pm. If you’re considering helping out please contact either Ray or Jenny. For all members who have helped during 2011, I wish to thank you and hope that 2012 is a successful year for the Club.

Last Wednesday’s monthly Jackpot Triples was sponsored by Dr. Graeme Lean BVSc., our local veterinarian. The winner of the day, with the card drawn for lowest winning margin, was Dennis Hume, Jack Timm and Di Hunt with a +6 and the runners-up were Millie Freshwater, Rob Scullion and Jim Tatum with a +12. The lucky card draw went to Maurie Dawes, Gaye Rohweder and Di Sutherland. Thanks Graeme for your sponsorship of the event. Thursday morning’s game of ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Ernie Sherwood and Robbie Dean with 2 wins and the highest score of 27. The runnersup, being the Winners of the Losers, with the highest score of 17 in Game 2 were Vivian and Stan Corbett. The afternoon game was won by Brian Fogarty and Rob Scullion with 2 wins and the highest score of 31, and the runners-up were Rob Farrell and John McSwain with the highest score of 12 in Game 2. The 2011 Mixed Pairs Club Competition commenced on Saturday. In Round 1, W Tumbridge def K Capern; R Siegle def J McSwain; C Freshwater def B Standring; J Lawson def B Fogarty; S Wilson def R Dean;

Tuesday November 8 raffle winners were Julie Hart and Gloria Shaw. Social winners were Judy Walker and Ray Bryant with the lowest score. We’ll still take it. Saturday was a social game enjoyed by all. Raffle winner was Rosemay Roderick. We have decided to resume our Three Bowl Pairs on Friday at 3.00p.m. We will have some meat tray raffles drawn after the game. We need all the support we can get, as we need to have 10 teams at least, but will be a social game if nothing else. We are in danger of becoming another closed Bowls Club on the Coast if we can’t get the support of our bowlers. Phone Rosemay on 5492 9663 or Judy on 5492 3932 to put your names down.
