CABOOLTURE

Hi Everyone

I

can’t remember another occasion when we have gone with an image on the front cover that doesn’t have a person, but this one just seemed so fitting. The image was taken at last year’s Hinterland Relay for Life, an overnight event that is an opportunity for family, friends and colleagues to get together with the community and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. The candlelight ceremony is held on dusk, and members of the public are encouraged to come along and participate in it.

For a small donation, you can light a candle to honour and support someone living with cancer or in memory of a loved one lost. Bags can be inscribed with messages of love, remembrance and hope and give a warm glow to inspire Relay participants as they walk through the night. Most of us have been touched by cancer throughout our lives and it can make us feel powerless – this is one very easy way that you can reflect, assist, encourage but mostly help bring ‘hope’ to others. The Relay for Life is one of the events being held as part of the Glasshouse Country Festival - there are more details about the event on page 3. Regards,

This Week in GCNews

HINTERLAND ACCOUNTING SERVICES

All about hope If you are heading past the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club next Saturday afternoon you will see this year’s local Relay for Life event happening. The fun starts at 3.00pm with the official start of the Relay. This is the second year Glasshouse Country has hosted the event and this year will see 15 teams participate including the Dessert Divas, the Embracables, Remsters Rebels, the Skittles, The Gunna’s, Toga Party 1 and Toga Party 2, Wonderful Onesies, Kirstee’s Crusaders, Andrea's Angels and the Woodcoy Ducks. Last year in the lead up to the event, as well as on the day, the teams raised a combined total of $27,000.00 and this year with more teams involved, they may go even higher. Part of the success of the event is about getting the community along on the day / night to support both their fundraising efforts as well as a show of strength and support. If you are a cancer survivor or carer you are welcome to come along and do a lap of the oval to get the event started. Or if you would like to remember people who have been lost, or those still fighting and the people who stand by them, then you will want to be there for the Hope Ceremony at 7.00pm conducted by a representative from Church on the Rise. The ceremony is combined with a candle light vigil, all teams will light their candles, messages

Call Leisa or Michelle are written on the bags and some people attach photos. They do a lap and then line the field with the light bags, this stays in place until the end of the event. After the Survior’s lap of the field at 3.00pm the event continues with one member of each team to be on the track at all times carrying the team baton (The Dessert Divas use a stylish wooden spoon covered in jewels). From 3.30pm to 4.00pm there will be kid’s fitness games run by Michelle from Fitness Matters, Beerwah. From 4.00pm – 6.00pm, The Croc Cruiser will be at the relay with games for the kids. Between 4.00pm and 5.00pm there will be Tae-kwon-do and Zumba displays. From 7.30pm – the Music starts, local performers and bands will entertain the walkers. At 10.00pm – it will be walkers only on the field, they will have games and music to keep them awake and walking. Each team will be fundraising on the day with bake sales, sponsored laps, raffles (Zoo passes, quilts, angels), games, face painting and the sale of glow sticks, ribbons etc. The sports club will open the canteen and food can be purchased. Anyone who would like to support the relay with entertainment, displays or services can contact Erin Gorlick on egorlick77@gmail.com. It’s a local event, so the more the merrier.

Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) last week sacked all 18 of their paid staff from the Visitor Information Centres (VIC’s) across the Sunshine Coast, including those working at our Glass House Mountains facility. The drastic change is designed to herald a new sales and marketing direction for SCDL, which concentrates on boosting visitor numbers to the region through a ‘digital distribution strategy’ at the expense of providing ‘old fashioned’ personal service to visitors from the employed Tourism Consultants once they are here. As a result, the bookings function of the centres will cease, meaning the need for paid staff is significantly reduced, placing emphasis on volunteers to run the centres almost entirely by themselves. As well, the Kawana Visitor Information Centre will be closed. SCDL intends to employ only two management staff to administer the remaining seven centres and coordinate the network of volunteer staff. Commenting on the new direction, SCDL CEO, Simon Ambrose, said that while it was a difficult decision, the long-term benefits of the move would significantly outweigh the short-term disruption. “The Board has had expert recommendations about growing tourism business for the Sunshine Coast, and with competition for tourism dollars so competitive, it is essential that we make this move and put additional resources into the digital sphere,” he said. “The volunteers have been doing a great job with their knowledge and passion for their local communities, and this is really what such centres should be all about.” However, in a document provided to all volunteers, SCDL flagged closing down any facilities which could not maintain an adequate level of volunteers. This is not only a concern for the small but dedicated band of volunteers at the Glass House Mountains centre, but would be an unsupportive outcome for the local tourism operators. In response to questions about the future of the Glass House Mountains VIC, Simon Ambrose confirmed their desire to see the centre operate effectively.

“The Glasshouse Mountains Visitor and Interpretative Centre is one of the most impressive visitor facilities across the region. SCDL is committed to ensuring the Glass House centre retains and continues to recruit volunteers to service visitors to the centre,” he said. “All centre hours will continue to be reviewed as every centre is different. This will be to ensure each centre can best service visitor needs according to seasonality demands and as per the Queensland Visitor Information Centre accreditation policy. “SCDL will continue to provide support and ongoing training for all volunteers.” We asked SCDL what they have done locally to attract new volunteers to help at the Glass House VIC. Unfortunately, CEO Simon Ambrose provided no answer to this question. With the volunteer numbers dropping over the last few years – there are only 29 now and back in 2009 there were 52 – they will desperately need all the help they can get to stave off the fate of the Kawana centre – that is, closure. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can call into the Glass House centre and have a chat to any of the staff (while they are still there) or the current volunteers. GCNews also approached both Council and local Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski for their views and comments on the SCDL changes, but both Council staff and Cr Baberowski chose not to make a response.

Behind the scenes in Simpson Street The most visible side of the Simpson Street redevelopment in Beerwah is the hardworking crews who continue reshaping the look of the ‘high street’ each day. One aspect of the $5 million project which the general public don’t get to see too much of, but which are just as industrious as the construction staff, is the project team who are guiding and coordinating the stages of construction. Adam Stewart is the Project Coordinator from Sunshine Coast Council. His role in council is to work on major street scaping projects, overseeing and steering them through from concept to construction to completion. Adam has worked on significant street scaping projects such as at Coolum, Marcoola and the Nambour Town Square. Another important council officer is Russell Higgins. His role as Project Superintendent is to dedicate himself to ensuring that the on-ground operations run smoothly and to plan. He coordinates the civil works being undertaken by council’s own work crews, as well as overseeing the works done by contractors (such as the landscaping teams). It was vitally important to council that they established and maintained very good lines of communication with the traders of Simpson Street and surrounds, even before the first shovel broke ground. For this reason, Council engaged the services of Trena-Louise Lyons, from Newsroom PR, as the Trader Liaison Consultant. Trena says her role is solely focused on keeping in close contact with all the local businesses from

Adam Stewart, Trena-Louise Lyons, Russell Higgins, Vicki Heading and Cr Rick Baberowski check over the work planned for that week before the project started right through to the end of construction. “I’m the ‘go-to girl’ for local traders to contact if they have any questions, concerns or suggestions. I’m also the information sharer, sending out and delivering the regular updates to each of the businesses on what they can expect in the coming fortnight,” Trena said. Before the project started, Trena says that each business was personally visited by the project team to introduce the project, talk through some maps and concept drawings, and understand any unique aspects of businesses that may need to be considered during construction. “Since then, the on-site construction team interacts with traders everyday regarding construction matters and is based from an onsite project office next to Neddy’s Nosebag. “And I’m available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to discuss any questions or issues that directly affected traders may have about the project,” she said.

By Greg Brown

And so far, most Simpson Street businesses seem fairly happy with how they’ve been kept informed with what’s happening. Vicki Heading, who owns and operates Beerwah Hair and Beauty says that she has found the project team very easy to get on with. “I had one issue when they were doing the concrete cutting to put in the new water pipes under the footpath and water came in under my door during the night. That morning I had three different project people come in and ask if they could help us with the cleanup and even provided an industrial dryer to dry under our counter. They could not have been more helpful,” Vicki said. “To date my clients have had no problem with access and I have informed them that it could get worse as they dig up our footpath. “But I feel ‘no pain no gain’ as in the long term Simpson Street should look fantastic. “I would also like to thank Councillor Rick for his ongoing support to our businesses as he had made every effort to keep us up-to-date with the progress,” she said. Lesley Wooler from Neddy's Nosebag said she has appreciated the regular updates via email as well as when Adam pops in for a chat to let them know where everything is at. “Our customers ask us plenty of questions about what is happening with the project, so it is great to be able to let them know,” said Lesley. “The other benefit for us is having more people working in the street, means some of them may come and purchase a drink or food during the day, although this has only make a slight difference to our sales,” she said.

It’s time for kids of all ages and abilities to get active at the Ngungun Kid’s Triathlon, Saturday, October 26, 7.00am – 10.00am at Beerwah and District Swimming Pool. Development Coach Peter Thorpe said this Glasshouse Country Festival event is a supportive and friendly activity for kids. “The Ngungun Kid’s Triathlon is non-competitive and encourages kids to be fit and healthy. Every participant is welcomed and valued, and receives a certificate and medal,” he said. There are three races to be held with varying distances, dependent on age and ability. Most importantly, it’s an opportunity for the kids to have a go and have fun. Participants will need to bring their own road worthy bike and a well fitted helmet. Registration closes on the morning of the race at 6.45am, cost is $10.00 for members; $15.00 for non-members, enquiries to 0423 702 677. The triathlon is just one of the fun events that are part of the Glasshouse Country Festival from October 18 -November 2. Immerse yourself in the vibrant, community atmosphere over 10 days of activities spanning from Beerburrum to Glenview and across to the foothills of the Blackall Range. On Saturday, October 19, hold a stall or grab a bargain at the Glasshouse Car Boot Country Market.

Ngungun Triathlon Club Catch all the entertainment with Ned Kelly and William Landsborough causing havoc on the steam train and take the kids to the Landsborough State School for some family fun. Across the ditch and down the pitch, Bro The Kiwi’s invaded Glasshouse Country last Wednesday, with a delegation of lads from Hastings Boys High School challenging Beerwah State High to a cricket match. Played at the Landsborough Sports and Recreation ground on Tunnel Ridge Road, the team from the Hawke’s Bay area on the north island of New Zealand had returned to avenge their loss to Beerwah High two years ago. Captain of the Hastings Boys under-17’s team Alex Withington explained that the under 15’s and under 17’s school cricket teams toured Australia every second year to gain experience and play some good cricket. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to play a lot of cricket over a two week period, meaning that we’re in good form when our season starts back home,” said Alex. “At home at the moment, it’s still a bit cool and wet, so playing in the Queensland weather is fantastic.” Except when they have to play in 40 degree heat at Nambour. “That was a bit extreme,” he said. “But it’s all about playing under different conditions, in different places and pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones.

“That way we become better individual players, team members, as well as growing personally too.” The tour started off at the Gold Coast, where the young men played experienced sides such as Brisbane Grammar and a Gold Coast school representative team. While on the Sunshine Coast, they also battled such school teams as Sunshine Coast Grammar, Matthew Flinders, and a Sunshine Coast representative side. The Beerwah High team captain Talbot Speechley, who also plays for the Glasshouse Rangers and is a member of the Sunshine Coast Scorchers Cricket Youth Academy, loved the opportunity to test his skills against those of our ‘island cousins’. “Having beaten them two years ago in a Twenty/ Twenty game, the Beerwah High team is looking forward to pushing them in the 50 over format match,” he said. “Beerwah High has a proud tradition of excellence in many sports and we’re keen to develop our cricketing prowess. “Playing these ‘internationals’ is not only a great experience, it’s a lot of fun too.” To the lads of Hastings Boys High we say ‘Haere ra’ (goodbye) – and see you again for the decider Find us on facebook in 2015.

Reconstruction starts on popular tourist route Work is about to start to repair LandsboroughMaleny Road at Bald Knob following damage during consecutive summers of heavy rain. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the project would restore the section of road to its original condition. "Heavy rain in 2011 saturated the ground and caused landslip damage on Landsborough-Maleny Road near Hovard Road," Mr Powell said. "Thankfully, this damage has not caused any significant problems for traffic, but it must be repaired to ensure the long-term stability of the road. "The works will include slope stabilisation, road reconstruction and reinstatement of the guardrail. "Crews are due to arrive on site in the coming days and the work will be completed early next year, weather permitting." Mr Powell said the project would cause some delays for motorists using the road, which provides a link to popular hinterland destinations. "One lane of a 300m section of LandsboroughMaleny Road near the Landsborough end of www.gcnews.com.au

Hovard Road will be closed to allow machinery to access the work site," he said. "Hovard Road will also be closed to through traffic for the duration of works so that motorists do not use this road as a detour, which would have a significant impact on the residents. "While most work will generally be carried out during the day between Monday and Friday, some weekend and nightwork may be undertaken to help keep the project on track when required. "I would ask motorists to drive to the changed conditions and obey all signage for their own safety and the safety of road workers." Work to damage sustained in 2013 will be completed next year. The project is being delivered under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, a joint federal and state initiative. Under these arrangements, the Australian Government provides 75 per cent of the funding, with 25 per cent from the Queensland Government.

Celebrate Children’s Week Passion runs deep Share in the fun of Children’s Week at a Family Day Out this Saturday, October 19 from 10.00am - 2.00pm on the Landsborough State School Oval, Cribb Street, Landsborough.

The event is being organised by Landsborough local Angel Love, a student, and mum of four children who is on her placement for her Diploma in Counseling at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. When Angel was asked if she would like to organise an event to celebrate ‘Children’s Week’ she jumped at the chance – she was keen to create a free family event in her home town. When planning for the event she drew on the knowledge of the activities that her children loved as well as some of the traditional games from her childhood. She hopes that including sack races, egg and spoon races and tug of war will encourage parents to compete with the kids and share in some good old fashioned fun. Angel has made sure there is plenty of free stuff including children’s games, face painting, a jumping castle, inflatable skirmish and craft activities. Special guests on the day will be Paula and Bridgett Powers from Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue. They will be giving a talk on the service they provide from the centre on Steve Irwin Way. There will be a sausage sizzle, drinks, fairy floss, snow cones and coffee for sale on the day. Or you can always bring a picnic lunch along and don’t forget to bring your own chairs or a picnic blanket. In the lead up to the day, the children at Landsborough State School have participated in a colouring-in competition and a raffle has been run, the winners for these will be announced and prizes presented on the day.

Glass House Mountains couple Sam Wilcocks and Sam Okoth share a passion for improving the lives of others. Last weekend Sam Wilcocks supported her friend Rachele in their fundraising efforts for ‘Free to Shine’ a non-profit organisation which prevents and responds to trafficking against children in Cambodia. For the second year in a row Sam took on climbing Mt Tibrogargan, Ngungun and Beerburrum as a fundraiser seeking sponsorship for their efforts. Sam is also very involved in on-going fundraising efforts to improve the living conditions for the residents of Kenya’s Luo Tribe of Siaya. Lue Tribe Village is where Sam’s partner Sam Okoth was born and since leaving the village in his teenage years he has lived an amazing life full of travel, study, learning arts and culture. On October 26 he will perform ‘Safari Mara’ (my journey) which will celebrate his 40 years, he will tell his story through music, dance, ritual and food, and is being held at the Eudlo Community Hall. To find out more about the event and ticket prices check out Groove Samoko on Facebook. On the night there will also be fundraising undertaken with funds generated to be used to provide five days of permaculture training, in Sam’s village, from the Permaculture Research Institute of Kenya. Sam said food sustainability is a huge issue for the village as it only rains for two months of the year, so learning these skills will have long term benefits for the people. The family travelled back to Kenya early last year and two of the requests they returned with were a sewing machine for the girls and soccer balls for the boys. So this time they will be able to fulfil those requests and Sam hopes that they may also be able to raise the funds for a second sewing machine for the village’s women. The Healthy Guru

Leanda and Craig are the dynamic duo behind ‘The Healthy Guru’ at the Beerwah Marketplace. The couple decided to combine their skills and knowledge to create an environment that empowers customers to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing needs. The genuine enthusiasm they have for sharing their knowledge and the joy they find in working with others to assist them on their own individual journeys is infectious. Leanda has extensive experience working in the health food industry, both in the retail environment as well as working as a sales representative, and has training in a broad range of natural therapy treatments including nutrition, massage, iridology, and herbal medicine as well as being a yoga teacher. Her background in the industry and her overriding passion for working with others to develop their awareness and understanding of health and wellness, through their food and lifestyle choices, brings a vibrant approach to what The Healthy

Business feature Guru offers. The Healthy Guru combines a retail environment and two treatment rooms for one-on-one consultations that will cater for the needs for the whole family from young children through to our elderly community members. Craig’s passion is ‘vision guidance’, tarot, numerology and astrology which are all tools to assist people to create the lives they want, developing goals, and planning how to achieve them. He also offers a Modality Divine Source Enhancement, which looks at the past patterns of your life that can be holding you back from achieving what you really want. They will also have a number of other locals joining them to provide additional Naturopathy, Hypnotherapy, and Bowen Therapy treatments. Leanda said their product range and quality they stock has been carefully sourced. For products to be on their shelves, they must be products that she and Craig would be happy to use themselves.

Their product range will no doubt expand and change over time as they get to know the local community and gain a better understanding of the individual needs of those that come and see them. They are really excited about meeting locals and encourage everyone to stop by and get the complete picture of what they are all about, once the doors open this week.

Community News Families enjoy kid’s night out

Contributed by Patricia Stahl Beerwah Library recently hosted the first ‘Kids Night In’ with fun and games for the whole family. This is the first of many ‘Kids Night In’, with families attending requesting the event be run again in future school holidays. Kids enjoyed the games, food and party bags and having the library to themselves for a night. The activity was a great opportunity for families to connect and be with their children for a fun event in the school holidays. Bella, shown in photo, won the prize for the library quiz, which was a movie pass and DVD. Keep your eye out for holiday programs at the Beerwah Library in December and January.

Best ever Beerwah Charity Sports Day Happy representatives of the Charity Sports Committee and Beerwah Lions Club present a cheque for $28,000 to Jodi Durkin from Cancer Council Queensland. The Committee is delighted to announce that this result is the best yet in 42 years of fund-raising for CCQ by the Glasshouse Country community.

Those able to be present for the photograph represent only a fraction of the people needed to run an event such as ours. We wish to extend once again our sincere thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers and supporters who made the 2013 Beerwah Charity Sports Day such a great success!

Nice win for local Landsborough local and Caloundra Lapidary Club member Jim McAllister was happy last week when he discovered that he had sold the winning ticket for the first prize in their club’s recent ‘Rock and Gem Show’ raffle. The prize, a spectacular sterling silver and 9ct gold pendant with green sapphires donated by Sunstate Jewellers, was won by Karin Gott of Landsborough Mechanical.

What a great show!

Glasshouse Country Orchid Society’s recent Show was a huge success. The displays and orchids were really spectacular, and the enthusiasm and delight of our visitors made the Hall buzz with excitement. We would like to thank everyone who attended, and in particular those local businesses who so generously supported us: Basset Barks, Glasshouse Country News, Matilda Fruit Barn, Matilda Service Station, Peachester Fruit and Veggies, Beerwah Flowers & Gifts, Fernlands, Bunnings and Aranbeem Orchids.

The prize might not be suitable for a day in the office – so meanwhile Karin is waiting for David to find a sufficiently swanky place to take her out so that she can display her win. If you would like to know more about the Caloundra Lapidary Club some of their members will be demonstrating their craft near the Landsborough Railway station on William Landsborough Day on Saturday, October 19.

Our raffle was drawn at the close of the Show, the winners being: first - Sue Powys, second Carol Hawkins and third - Colin and Mavis.

Grand Champion and Champion species was Paph. esquirolei grown by R and J Hopkins of Caboolture Orchid Society

Business feature

Your local electrician or reseller will give you the plain facts about solar. He is your local electrician, so he will be able to advise you how to set up your system so you can grow into it as the household budget allows. Now that the high 'feed-in-tariff' is finished and the new tariff applies, your local electrician can give you the best system to suit your budget and family needs.

There are still Government subsidies available for installing solar on your home, or if you just want to add a couple of panels to the existing system. Don’t leave it too late as the new Government is looking into all their grant schemes. Your local electrician and reseller will only sell you quality products with a solid warranty back up.

How to save $$$ - What uses energy in your home? There’s an incredible range in annual electricity and gas consumption between households in Australia. Some households with three or four people have quarterly bills of only a few hundred dollars while others the same size have bills of over $2,000. Households with large bills are the ones who really need to take a second look at how to save energy in the home. The more you use, the more ways we at 1300 4 SOLAR can find to save you money. Your energy use is the result of many decisions made over the years on things like the house design, its orientation, lighting and hot water systems installed, the appliances you’ve bought and how you live your life. Being energy efficient is all about making the most of the energy you pay for. Being efficient does not mean sitting in the dark, shivering in winter. It’s all about being smarter with the way you use energy. Will LED lighting make a difference? The LED lighting revolution is here! That means you can change your 50 watt low voltage down lights to LED lamps that use 10 watts each.

Choose your LED products carefully and stick with known, reputable brands, as 'cheap is not always cheap!' How much can I save on my hot water, heating and cooling? We assess your hot water, heating and cooling, and give advice on behaviour change, so you can see what percentage savings we can find. We list how much it will cost to deliver savings, and how long it will be before that investment can pay for itself. Up to 35% of heat is lost from a house through an uninsulated ceiling. Uninsulated walls count for a further 15 to 25% of losses and uninsulated floors account for 10 to 20%. Improving insulation throughout the house is very effective. You’ll be cooler in summer and cosier in winter. And insulation is surprisingly inexpensive. How do my electrical appliances affect my bill? Do you really need that second fridge? If not turn it off, it is probably very old and therefore uses an excessive amount of power. If you do need one, consider buying one of the new energy saving fridges using around only 500 KW per year. The following items use this amount of your total power bill: 3% laundry, 13% computers

and TV’s, 4% standby power, 14% kitchen appliances, 21% heating and cooling, and 45% lighting. Many appliances have standby losses, so where you can, turn them off at the power point, save power and money. Wash clothes with cold water and only use the machine when it’s full because washing a full load or only a few items uses just about as much energy. Dry your clothes outside on sunny days and avoid using the electric dryer. Dryers are a big user of power, so only use it sparingly. The sun is, after all the cheapest source of energy. How can electric goods use power when they are off? Many appliances in a household use power even when they are not operating. The worst offenders include computers, DVD players, microwaves and electric toothbrushes. Most microwaves use more energy to power their digital clock than to heat food. That’s because they are on standby mode 99% of the time. So, it makes sense to switch them off at the wall. If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from our years in energy efficiency consulting, it’s that every home is unique and that the way everyone uses energy at home is also unique.

School News Operation Christmas Child

These Mooloolah State School children have an important message for all of us! They want to show us that Christmas is about giving, and that the smallest things can make the biggest difference! Mooloolah State School is again participating in the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal. This appeal provides shoeboxes of small gifts to disadvantaged children, and also provides us a chance to experience the true spirit of love and giving at Christmas time! This year the MSS shoeboxes will go to poor children in remote Australia and Papua New Guinea; for many of these it will be the first gift they have ever received! The Mooloolah children are collecting and sorting items and ready to start covering shoe boxes with bright Christmas wrap. Each box will be packed with something to wear (t-shirt, shorts, hat, underwear, thongs), something to use at school (pencils, felt-tips, rubbers, note-books), something special (bag, sunglasses, stickers, craft kits), something to love (small cuddly soft toys, dolls, teddies), something to play with (small balls, puzzles, marbles, skipping ropes, cards or small storybooks), and something for personal hygiene (unopened toothbrushes, soaps, brushes, hairbands, and facewashers). Each shoebox costs $9.00 to send, so students are asking community and local businesses to get behind the appeal and help them send as many shoeboxes as possible. Businesses might like to donate money to send a number of boxes; households might like to donate items, or even a Christmas wrapped shoebox (lid and box must be covered separately to allow opened for filling) with $9.00 enclosed to cover sending! All donations will be most gratefully received at Mooloolah State School office or IGA Mooloolah (by Thursday, October 24 hurry!), and later by the children receiving them! For any inquiries please phone Fiona (schools RI coordinator) on 0411 306 838. Help Mooloolah State School make a difference to one more child at Christmas.

OH NO!

GCCC dance debut

Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Middle School Dance Troupe made their eisteddfod debut at the Noosa Spring Dance Festival during the school holidays. After overcoming nerves, the girls performed exceptionally well and came away with a Highly Commended for their efforts. This is a huge achievement considering the girls were the only school in the competition and were up against professional Dance academies. To top it off, only four points separated first position and the GCCC Middle School Troupe. The girls have worked extremely hard throughout the year for this pleasing result. Billie Dyer in Year 8 also competed in the solo section of the Noosa Eisteddfod, with 32 other competitors in her category. Unfortunately Billie missed out on a place this year, but achieved a great score of 82 points.

International Dot Day

Recently all the students at Beerburrum State School celebrated International Dot Day, which is all about encouraging kids to discover how they can make a difference. The book titled ‘The Dot’, written by Peter Reynolds, inspired this special day! ‘The Dot’ is a simple, short picture book suitable for all ages, but it's definitely one with a message to share. It is a story about a young girl Vashti, who became upset in art class because she didn't think she could draw. Her teacher challenged her to, "just make a mark and see where it takes you." So Vashti defiantly jabbed the paper and made a dot, and what happened after that shows how one simple act can snowball into something important. The students were inspired by this beautiful story and were able to relate to the theme of ‘making a mark’ and making a difference. In the story, Vashti's teacher honored her simple dot by framing the signed picture, and this small bit of encouragement was enough to help Vashti discover a hidden talent. All 150 students enthusiastically produced their ‘Dot’, signed their work and all of the Gold framed Dot Day pieces of art are proudly on display in our Library! A very big thank you goes to our very special volunteer Jo, for her inspiration and support to both students and staff while we participated in the activity. If you haven't read the book, you might want to check it out….and see where it takes you!

Beerwah SHS – Ski Trip to Queenstown By Lani Buchanan Over 30 Beerwah State High School students took off to New Zealand for a snow filled adventure in the recent September / October school holidays. With views of Lake Wakatipu and within walking distance of town, we were very well looked after. At the end of five full days of skiing and boarding at Cardrona and The Remarkables mountains, it’s safe to say that there were a few sore muscles and tired smiles. Taking full advantage of the Olympic facilities at Cardrona, our students attempted snow jumps, half pipes and rails. Spending a week in stunning Queenstown also included a morning of jet boating, a gondola ride to the Skyline Restaurant and a lap on the Luge rides. We arrived back home with new friends, new memories and a new love for the snow and Queenstown.

‘Tis the season to get organised It’s hard to believe that it’s only 10 weeks until Christmas is here again. At this time of year businesses and organisations are looking to finalise their Christmas parties to show their appreciation for the hard work that has been done during the year. And households are working out how they are going to juggle all the family get togethers which happen before, on and after Christmas Day. Christmas tends to be a busy time for everyone, so it is important to start your preparation now. Here are a few things to consider when you’re planning your Christmas Feasting. Choosing the venue Choose a style that suits you and your guests. You may opt for something more casual like an outdoor or home-based banquet, or you may prefer the ease of a local restaurant or café. You may want a format table service dinner, or a buffet style meal. Will you want alcohol served or will it be a BYO affair? Make sure you check which venue or supplier meets what you are looking for. ns ctio alty Fun r speci ou are

ALL FOR CHRISTMAS

Setting the date Christmas is busy for everyone. Set the date early so people can lock it into their social diaries. Giving your chosen venue or supplier plenty of notice will mean that they can plan to make your event go off without a hitch. A midweek or lunchtime function can sometimes be easier to book than a Friday night or weekend timeslot. Transport The festive season can mean a few festive drinks, and so transport can be an issue. Check with the venue if they have a courtesy bus or organise a ‘designated driver’ or two. Book a maxi-taxi to take everyone home at the end. Keeping your friends, family and workers safe is important.

Not Happy

I am sure I am not the only local who is dissatisfied with our local Woolworths in Beerwah, I consistently find the shelves out of stock and produce is far from fresh. Finding meat that would last more than two days in the fridge is near impossible. This doesn’t support their 'Fresh Food People' advertising. I'm not sure what head office Woolworths think of us country bumpkins, but we certainly deserve better. Each time I shop at Chancellor Park or Caloundra Woolworths, I am amazed at the quality and diversity of food. Take note Beerwah Woolworths or you might find people go elsewhere! Name Supplied Glenview

Thanks ladies

I would like to congratulate Bodie Smith and her wonderful mother Julie for all the work they put into organising the fundraiser dinner for breast cancer at the Glasshouse Sports Club on Saturday, October 5. What a great night, good food, good music and good company. What a wonderful initiative for a young person like Bodie to organise and raise over $4,000.00 for breast cancer. Well done - I think we will be seeing great things in the future from Bodie Smith. Vicki Heading Beerwah Hair and Beauty

Sign of the times

Excessive trucks, excessive noise

It is definitely getting worse. We have lived on Coonowrin Road at Glass House Mountains now close to seven years. During that time there definitely are a lot more trucks. Some of these trucks should be booked for undue noise, one in particular sounds like a plane coming up the hill. They do not abide by the speed limits, some still use air brakes even though there is a sign saying not to use them. When is the Council going to seriously have a look at the situation? The trucks use this route for five and a half days per week, from 6.00am to 6.00pm going past the school, child care centre, shopping village and all that weight continually going over the railway bridge. They need to be using a different route, why not Marshs Road? There are not so many houses and it’s a much more sensible route for heavy vehicles. Come on Council please do something about it! Bureaucracy gone mad

In similar fashion to Graham Anstis comments regarding our green waste disposal, we to have ‘been there and done that’ with our local council and our Division 1 councillor. In just a few years of dumping, what used to be free, then $3.00, then $5.00, then $8.00, now $15.00, like most of our neighbourhood we chop up most of our green waste and add it directly to our garden and burn a small % when conditions are suitable. Like most governing bodies that control us, all they can do is take and not give. Over the years we have given many valuable items for re-sale upon which they have capitalised on very well, and this is how they treat you in return. Colin Batch Beerwah

Old Chaff Cutter

A hand operated two blade Chaff Cutter has been part of the Bankfoot House collection for over 100 years. The cast iron and mild steel Chaff Cutter is branded by the manufacturer, Bentall Heybridge Maldon, England. The Chaff Cutter was restored in 2010 by the Friends of Bankfoot House. As an item of farm equipment it is known to have been used by William Smith Burgess to cut produce grown on the property to feed the horses and bullocks. William didn’t ever own a motor car but rode his horse when he needed to travel around the district. He also drove a bullock team hauling logs to local saw mills. The gearing of the Chaff Cutter allows for variable lengths of chaff, depending on the type of animal to be fed. Mary Ferris, daughter of William Smith Burgess, believed that the Chaff Cutter was originally owned by William’s father, Isaac Hudson Burgess. Isaac, who was the first settler in Mellum Creek from 1871 (name changed to Landsborough in 1890), sourced timber, ran the Temperance Hotel, sold goods to passing travellers and grew fodder for animals. Isaac and his third wife, Mary Teresa Sullivan, both died as a result of their house catching fire on the night of January 1, 1905. Mary got up for a drink of water during the night and struck a wax match to light a candle. The head of the match must have fallen through a crack in the floorboards and ignited the hay that Isaac had stored under the house. Next thing there was a blazing fire with deadly results. The Chaff Cutter was one of the few items salvaged from the 1905 fire. William would have been 26 years of age by this time and living with his wife Clementina Grigor at Bankfoot House.

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Beerwah Aquatic Centre

Great news – all the pools at Beerwah Aquatic Centre are open again. Council has completely tiled the 25m pool and you are sure to see the difference – it looks like a new pool. With all the warm weather we’ve been having, it’s a good time to have the Beerwah Aquatic Centre on your list of fun activities and active recreation to get involved in this week.

Place + Beerwah

Community update

PLACE+ Beerwah Public Domain Improvements – Simpson Street July 2013 – March 2014

Construction on the $4 million upgrade of Beerwah’s Simpson Street is underway, delivered as part of the community-guided PLACE+ Beerwah Council Action Plan. PLACE+ Beerwah’s goal is to further develop Beerwah’s character, community pride and economic stimulation.

You can’t miss the transformation that’s underway in Beerwah with Council’s Place + project well and truly in full swing. Temporary traffic changes are in place to ensure safety to pedestrians, motorists and construction staff and temporary line marking and signage highlight the changed conditions. At this stage it’s car parking that’s making a real change to the way we shop in town. For the next few months you can expect not to be able to access regular street parking and instead you can use the four other car parks available - the car park opposite the walkway to the railway station or the extended car park opposite the medical centre that runs all the way down to Aldi and there’s also the Aldi and Beerwah village car parks if you are shopping there. Remember to support Beerwah businesses and shop locally – especially during this heavy construction phase.

On-street car parking (along the shop side of Simpson Street) will be temporarily affected during the construction period. Please note that the availability of on-street parking on Simpson Street will change regularly while road and landscape construction works occur.

It’s really important that you don’t mix recyclable glass bottles and jars with household glass items like mirrors, light globes, window glass and (broken) drinking glasses. One wrong glass item placed in your recycling bin can contaminate an entire recycling batch. You can recycle clear, green or brown bottles – including wine, beer, juice, soft drink and sauce bottles and glass jars such as those from jams and spreads. Remember, all glass for recycling should be rinsed and remove the lids because in general the lids aren’t recyclable and it’s a safer bet to discard them with your general waste.

Car parking spaces remain available during the construction period and can be found at: • the newly expanded carpark (opposite the Beerwah Medical Centre) • Beerwah railway station carpark • Beerwah Shopping Village • Turner Street • Some local businesses have designated customer car parking areas available including Aldi, medical centre, dental surgery and banks.

Out and about

I’ll be in Landsborough at Morris House on Friday, October 25 from 1.00pm to 4.00pm, feel free to drop in and catch up about what’s happening in the community.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 At the October Mooloolah morning community meeting we discussed a wide variety of topics and one of them was regarding Mooloolah becoming an officially recognised ‘RV Friendly’ town. There are a number of issues to consider for this to happen, a suitable site, facilities, maintenance, management and the impact of heavy vehicles. We talked about setting up a dedicated site for a 12 month trial period so we can test the waters as a community to see if Mooloolah really is ready to be RV friendly. In the meantime a few representatives will meet with Sunshine Coast Destinations Ltd and the RACQ to find out more about the opportunities and challenges that come with RV friendly status. At the meeting a maintenance matter for the centre of town was raised regarding palm trees outside the café. Council Parks and Gardens staff have since been alerted and will be on the job in a matter of days. We also talked about signage in Mooloolah and how to go about installing new signs that add to the aesthetic appeal of town while providing practical navigational information. Council will host a meeting with the community to discuss some of the options, so keep an eye out for the date and time if you’re interested in being part of the discussions. Significant progress has been made regarding the Mooloolah Pool, with Mooloolah Valley Community Association taking on a formal agreement with Education Queensland to provide ongoing community access. This is great news for the local community and Council is now in discussions with the Association regarding funding support to help with the running costs of the pool. It’s great to see the new seats Council has installed in Martin Rungert Park are right near the bus stop for students to use before and after school. The bollards that were removed were previously used for horse tethering and if a fit-for-purpose place for horse tethering is necessary, don’t hesitate to let me know and I’d be happy to look into possible options. The next Mooloolah breakfast meeting is Thursday, November 7 at Kenny’s at Mooloolah from 7.30am – all and sundry are welcome. www.gcnews.com.au

Residents and visitors are advised that some temporary disruptions to trafc and scheduled night works will be necessary in order to expedite the project. We ask for your continued patience as we deliver the following improvements to Beerwah: • improved road infrastructure • raised pedestrian crossings to help create a low speed environment • new seating and provision for outdoor dining • active open space and civic areas – including increased footpath space, improved lighting, shade trees and public art • landscape design that reects Beerwah’s history, with a contemporary edge • underground power lines • a new shared pathway along the western side of Simpson Street. For more information visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au > About Council > Projects > Major Regional Projects. The PLACE+ Beerwah Public Domain Improvements – Simpson Street is a joint initiative of Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government.

Businesses in Simpson Street and the surrounding areas will remain open during construction (July 2013 – March 2014). Please continue to support these businesses by ‘shopping local rst’.

Living Photography Corner with the Grafx Group Contributed by Margaret Thompson

Fairies at the bottom of the garden Being able to see beyond the obvious and use one’s imagination are attributes that the avid photographer is constantly drawing on. Often nature provides a setting which allows us to make use of photo editing programs to let our fancies run free. On close inspection of the flower of the Bat Plant featured in last month’s GCNews we notice a number of ‘toadstool houses’ where almost certainly tiny beings reside. The insertion of the fairy into this flower along with some colour tweaking gives a surreal feeling to the final image. Using the editing programs to produce our own computer art is a most rewarding activity which stretches the imagination and provides entertainment.

Free breast cancer screening in Beerwah Breast Cancer is a serious illness that affects about one in eight Queensland women at some stage in their lifetime. Women from Beerwah and surrounding areas are being urged to take advantage of free breast cancer screening at Queensland Health’s mobile service which will be located next to the Beerwah Community Hall, Peachester Road Beerwah, from November 4 – 19. BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Kelly Hart said the mobile van has the same state-of-the-art equipment that is used in permanent sites, like Caloundra." “Bringing the mobile BreastScreen van to Beerwah means that local women don’t have to travel as far to find a quality service,” explained Ms Hart. When BreastScreen Queensland was in Beerwah two years ago they screened over 380 local women. “This means that a large number of women from this area will be due for their rescreen this year,” said Ms Hart. Regular two yearly breast cancer screening is still the best way to find breast cancer early – well before a woman or her doctor can feel anything. All women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a BreastScreen Queensland Service. Women aged 50 - 74 years are particularly encouraged to attend. Appointments are starting to fill so phone 13 20 50 to make an appointment or for further information. A doctor’s referral is not required.

U3A Beerwah Grafx Group meets each Thursday at Beerwah Library between 3.00pm and 6.30pm with a variety of sessions each week. New members are always welcome. To find out more contact Alistair Davis on 5496 9006 or email alistairvet@gmail.com

Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help.

RT PO S AN TR

It is estimated that approximately 85% of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis. The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles.

TRANSPORT

There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today, or visit www.adjusttolife. com.au Beerwah 5494 0499 or Maroochydore 5443 4545

Get Ready Queensland Minister for Police and Community Safety Jack Dempsey is urging Glasshouse Country residents to get ready for this summer’s forces of nature in the lead-up to the storm and cyclone season. “On any given day, all Queenslanders could be faced with the threat of storm, cyclone or even bushfires but it’s ultimately up to us how we weather the storm and prepare ourselves,” Mr Dempsey said. “It’s up to everyone to ensure nobody is caught off guard by preparing our homes and families so emergency crews can be directed where they will do the most good.” To help us prepare, the Queensland Government have launched the Get Ready Queensland initiative. Minister Dempsey said the initiative would include a new campaign aimed at encouraging people to build their own resilience ‘step-by-step’ during ‘Get Ready Week’ from October 14 to 20. “We’ll be encouraging everyone to get involved in October and do something to get themselves, their families, neighbours, businesses, clubs or community groups, prepared and ready for the summer wet season,” Mr Dempsey said.

During Get Ready Week, Emergency Management QLD will be launching a brand-new digital initiative ‘Get Ready – one step at a time’. Here you’ll be able to sign up for your personalised Get Ready program by entering some simple details about your location and your local risks. Each week you’ll receive one simple task to complete that will help to build your resilience. You’ll be able to track how you’re going and see how your community compares with others across the state. To find out more about preparing yourself for storm season, take a look at the Get Ready Queensland website www.getready.qld.gov.au Here you’ll be able to sign up to the program as well as read through some great factsheets on getting yourself ready – from preparing your emergency kit and evacuation plan, to disaster-proofing your home and helping your neighbours.

Melastoma malabathricum ssp malabathricum syn M. affine This week we will concentrate on the importance of planting local endemic species rather than non-natives. It has come to our attention that Tibouchina’s are naturalising into bushland, so we would like to introduce our local native beauty, the Blue Tongue (Melastoma malabathricum ssp malabathricum). Blue Tongue grows to two metres with three distinct veins in the leaves and flowers of various shades of pink, appearing mainly in spring. The fruit is cup shaped and dark purple, and can be eaten when ripe. This endemic species provides a food source for local fauna including Australian Brush Turkey, Lewin’s Honeyeater, and Coral Jewel Butterfly. It has great ornamental potential in landscaping and the home garden.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Pastor Rodney Jobe Church on the Rise I heard the story about a farmer who used to take his mule to the horse races. The mule had bowed legs and a dipped back and looked very tired. The farmer though, would put him in the horse race. People all around him would say, “your mule will never win a race.” His reply was, “no, but the company will do him good.” For us as people, Friendship in life is very important. We are born into families and we love to connect with others in a meaningful way. ‘A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity,’ says the book of Proverbs. Real friends are there through thick and thin! They are there through the highs and lows, good times and bad times. You know that they will be there for you. Better if they are close by, but they could be half way around the world. For me, my wife Rhonda is my closet friend and companion. She has always been there over our 36 years of marriage for which I honour her.

Sadly some live in fear of rejection and never want you to know them too close, lest you see their weaknesses. They say to themselves, ‘I'm not good enough to be accepted totally by you.’ But real life is not so much about things and gadgets! It’s about people, connected together in friendship in the journey of life. Jesus put it this way in Matthew 22:36, ‘you shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Our world is crying out for friendship and community. We can only do this truly with the God kind of love. a love that keeps on giving even when we don’t deserve it. A love that says I value you as a person and you’re worth fighting for. As Australians, we have always prided ourselves on ‘Mateship’. Being there for each other helps build community and a strong nation. Some people today question the relevance of the local church. One of the reasons churches exist is for fellowship. It is the family of God where strong and positive friendships and relationships are built. We have had a slogan in our church for many years now, ‘doing life together’. I pray you find the kind of friends that the bible says will ‘Love at all times’.

Hinterland BMX

Contributed by Vicki Beutel It has been a very exciting year for our club and riders this year. We had some of our riders attend the week long National Australian BMX Titles at Brisbane’s Sleemans Centre. They all did really great and can be proud of the effort they put in. Indigo Espray (five - seven year girls), Holly Espray (11 year girls), Kirrilly Spratt (14 year girls), Susie Hume (45 - 49 year women’s Cruisers) won No 2 Australian Plate for her division. Luka Codlin (five - six years boys), Callum Wooler (nine year boys), Ben Spratt (13 year boys), David Hume(17 - 24 year men’s), Paul Hume (45 - 49 years men’s Cruisers). Two of our riders Ben Spratt (13 year boys) and Luka Codlin (sprokets five - seven years) who were placed in the top 16 riders in their age division at the Nationals, were nominated to attend the World BMX Titles held over in New Zealand. Both did exceptional well for their first attendance at this level. The first week of the September school holidays saw 17 of our club riders and their families attend the BMX Qld State Titles at Nerang QLD. For our sprockets, Chevy Bain, Luka Codlin, Liam Doherty, Jordan Jones, plus Tayla Codlin (12 year girls) and Harry Fisher (13 year boys) it was their first taste of a Qld Titles and once again they showed that they can mix it with the best.

Horse Riding @ Rossi’s 5494 8515

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Under the full Moon this weekend coming in Aries, which is opposite your sign, this moonlight can throw action onto a relationship, partnership, or collaboration. At least one that is fairer to you. Decisions and choices that you think cant fail now may prove to be impractical in the long run. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This full Moon weekend will rattle impulsive and sudden changes in everyday routines. Using this moonlight for improving physical health or eliminating bad habits works to your advantage. Introspective Mercury is about to go retrograde to pull you back from any extravagance. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The spontaneous effects from the Aries full Moon eclipse makes you feel ready to leap tall buildings in a single bound! Mercury in transit through Scorpio whispers not to get involved in half baked schemes, or mingling with the wrong companions. Avoid night clubs and conflicts. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Success can be achieved by developing new business tactics under this full Moon weekend in Aries. LEO July 23 – August 22 With the build-up to the fire sign of the full Moon in Aries by this weekend, people you deal with may be unpredictable. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You will quickly say yes to unconventional forms of fun, pleasure and social experimentation. It’s because of the impetuous Aries full Moon eclipse by this weekend. Mercury is about to go retrograde in your career zone, so it’s a signal to finish up projects and any misunderstandings. PISCES February 20 – March 20 With Mars entering Virgo’s efficient world from this week it marks a time of clarity in what you need and conscientious intensions. Stick to a clear agenda and under the full Moon in Aries do not fall into victimhood and sacrifice. You are likely to be a compassionate soulful warrior this week. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week the Moon is in your sign and may compel you to act independently so that may generate tensions, if not a few confrontations. The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9.00am and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn't wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, 'It is 5.00am. Wake up.’ Chris Bell, Caloundra

A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realised that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5.00am for an early morning business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, 'please wake me at 5.00am.' He left it where he knew she would find it.
