Hi Everyone... While writing my column this week, I am humming “it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas”. You may have noticed that a little bit of Christmas talk has started to feature in the paper and, as we like to do each year, we have started our official countdown to Christmas on the cover. While the kids will be counting down the sleeps until Santa arrives, we just talk about editions left until Christmas and that is now in single digits. The tally is at nine so I thought it was time to start talking about Christmas. I am trying to be super organised in the lead up to Christmas, so I am encouraging anyone involved in organising Christmas events locally to flick us an email at editorial@gcnews.com.au so we can include details in upcoming editions of the paper. Or for those organising Christmas parties who would like to share some festive photos with the rest of the community, make sure you send your photos through to us (with the names of the people in the photos) and we can include them in our Christmas editions. Just in case you are wondering, you have 69 days to get ready for the big event!

Local News Do you know an unsung local hero? When Sunshine Coast resident Debra Knight heard her name called as the 2019 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award Citizen of the Year, she was lost for words. Debra has provided support for more than 10 years to thousands of families through Gateway Care in Caloundra and established a group of volunteers who offer the same genuine care for others as she does. If you know someone like Debra, or a community group or organisation making a difference to the Sunshine Coast community, help them to achieve the recognition they deserve by nominating them for a 2020 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson launched the 2020 awards recently and encouraged residents to nominate a local legend in one of the seven Australia Day Award categories. “The Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards celebrate the achievement and contribution of individuals and community organisations across our healthy, smart, creative region,” Mr Jamieson said. “We’re looking for everyday people. They don’t have to be famous to be nominated for our Australia Day awards. We want to honour the unsung heroes in our community. “We are fortunate to have so many individuals in our community who work to make the Sunshine Coast a better place. “So have a think about those people or organisations making a difference in your community and

nominate them. It’s really easy to nominate and a great way to say thanks.” Debra Knight said receiving the award was overwhelming. “I was really encouraged to be nominated for the work Gateway Care is doing in the community,” Ms Knight said. “I know there are many others doing great things and I was grateful to receive this recognition and the award.” You can nominate now in the categories of Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community – Group or Organisation, Environment, Creative, and Sport and Recreation. Local award recipients from 2019 were Mark and Gayle Forbes. They received the Community Group Award for establishing endED, with work now under way on their centre at Mooloolah Valley. Other local winners for 2019 were Tony Gill and Jane Caraffi from Art on Cairncross in Maleny, who received the Creative Award. Nominations for the 2020 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards close on November 18. You can nominate online via council’s website at www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Living-and-Community/ Awards-and-Citizenship/Australia-Day-Awards. Sunshine Coast Australia Day Award 2020 recipients will be announced at a special ceremony to be held on Friday, January 24. 2020 Council Election countdown Saturday, March 28, 2020

Kiti Bruinsma to contest Division 5 Mrs Bruinsma spent the first 15 years of her life in Fiji before attending Brisbane’s Clayfield College as a boarder to complete her secondary education. She then studied a Bachelor of Business at the University of Southern Queensland. She has worked in retail and service industries and currently has an online business, Gold & Cedar, which markets cosmetics to women of colour. “It’s not about you or me, it is about we and us, and making sure local government comes back to serving the people,” Mrs Bruinsma said. “I do want to make a difference. I know I can make a difference. It is time for ongoing strong representation for the people of Division 5.” Mrs Bruinsma is married with four children. For more information, visit her Facebook page Kiti Bruinsma Candidate for Division 5.

Palmwoods resident and community worker Kiti Bruinsma has put herself forward as a candidate for Division 5 in next year’s Sunshine Coast Council elections. Mrs Bruinsma said she was nominating for the role with the aim of bringing sensible, honest and common sense representation to the people of Palmwoods, Montville, Maleny, Eudlo, Mooloolah, Woombye and surrounds. “As a mother and community member, I bring a level-headed view of the world. I think I can look at issues in an objective way to make decisions,” Mrs Bruinsma said. “I like people, I like community and I just want people to be well represented and well served by the Sunshine Coast Council.” Mrs Bruinsma is not completely foreign to politics as she grew up in a political household in Fiji, where she observed her late father’s humility, honesty, courage and intellect as a government minister, chairman of the Public Service Commission and his service with key public bodies including the Fiji National Provident Fund and the National St John Council of Fiji. Her decision to run as a candidate was piqued several months ago when a close friend encouraged her to “give it a go”.

It’s Street Party time Organisers of the Glasshouse Country Street Party Beerwah are busy putting together the final touches to this year's highly anticipated event to make sure it all goes off with a bang. This massive community celebration will take over Simpson Street, Beerwah Market Place and Village and surrounds this Friday, October 18 from 4-9pm, with organisers expecting a crowd of around 10,000 people. Celebrate Glasshouse Country project officer Judy Tomlinson said the organisers had been overwhelmed at the positive responses and generous sponsorship support from people and businesses from all over Glasshouse Country. “We are so excited to be able to celebrate not only the wonderful people and communities that make up the Glasshouse Country area but also help showcase and support our local community, business and tourism," Judy said. "We’ve had some incredible support for this year’s street party, which is shaping up to be the biggest and best we’ve organised so far.” Incorporating Simpson Street, the post office car park area, a dedicated ride zone and entertainment areas around Beerwah Marketplace and Village and various spots throughout surrounding areas – the Street Party is going to be big! Party goers will be able to reclaim Simpson Street as it will be closed to traffic allowing everyone to savour the various food and market stalls, street dining and live entertainment.

Judy said the food outlets along Simpson Street and the shopping centre would feature street dining options and to complement the businesses there would be numerous street food stalls representing many nationalities as well as vegan and vegetarian options on offer. “It’s wonderful to see so many of our dining outlets and surrounding businesses getting into full party mode for the celebration. We’ve also got heaps of free family friendly activities and entertainment such as the Party Ponies Petting Zoo, circus skills workshops, ukulele performers and more,” Judy said. This year’s rides will be awesome with a massive 35m triple slide, super rock-climbing wall and bigger cup-and-saucer ride. Judy said that as well as the community emphasis, this year would also focus on pushing "the eco side" with all participants asked to be mindful of reducing their environmental impact and waste. Local community groups that promote sustainability will also be showcased including the Boomerang Bags, the War on Waste group and the cash-for-containers scheme, which will be undertaken with Queensland Scouts. Street Party musical director Jenny Broderick said she was excited to be able to showcase the musical talent of both emerging and established local artists as well as a dedicated local school kids showcase from 4-6pm, with a jam packed program of live entertainment for the event. “We’ve got some incredible talent performing

veterans thanked

Former Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel on the Sunshine Coast will enjoy a free visit to Australia Zoo and have a chance to meet the Minister for Veterans Affairs Darren Chester on Sunshine Coast Veterans Day. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace and Australia Zoo’s government relations manager Bill Ferguson announced the collaboration recently. Entry to Australia Zoo will be free for veterans, plus one guest each, on Monday, October 28, as part of the initiative, which Mr Wallace named Sunshine Coast Veterans Day. However, in an extra twist, this year the minister will join local service men and women touring the zoo on the day. Mr Wallace said ADF personnel worked hard and made huge sacrifices to keep us safe and we owed them a great debt of gratitude. "Since my election in 2016 I have worked hard to honour and value that contribution by advocating for real action to support veterans as they transition back into civilian life," Mr Wallace said. "Veterans know that spending time with mates who understand their service can really help to improve their mental health and this, the second annual Sunshine Coast Veterans Day, is designed to give them a great opportunity to do that.” Veterans who show their veteran lapel pin, white or gold Veteran Card, or other proof of service

Andrew Wallace with Bill Ferguson and Brian Machin and Nick Shelley of Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch will get free all-day entry to the zoo. Veterans who do not have proof of service are encouraged to contact their local RSL sub branch or Mr Wallace's office. Bill Ferguson, of Australia Zoo, said it was always a pleasure for the zoo to be able to give back to local veterans. The Sunshine Coast Veterans Day initiative is part of a series of activities Mr Wallace has pursued on the Sunshine Coast to support local veterans’ mental health and employment prospects. "The presence of the Minister for Veterans Affairs this year will give former service men and women the chance to provide direct feedback to the government on the services that they need," Mr Wallace said. For more information, contact the Mr Wallace's office on 5493 5556 or email andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au.

Maleny local to coach first INAS global cricket team Nathan Dodd’s career as a cricket coach has evolved significantly in the past few years and the Maleny local will this week help Australia's team make its mark at the INAS Global Games in Brisbane. INAS is the International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments and the Global Games are held every four years. This year will be the first in the event’s 30-year history to include cricket. The Global Games is the world’s largest sporting event for people with an intellectual impairment and is an important event for athletes in the lead up to the Paralympics. Nathan is the senior assistant coach with the Australian team and has held the position for more than two years, helping the 14-man squad prepare in the lead up to the games. “Earlier this year we had a high-performance training camp and most recently the team had a practise match in Caloundra,” he said. “The team’s players are from all over Australia and have broad and diverse backgrounds. “We’ve players that have previously played together and others that are new, but they are all familiar with each other having met through interstate competitions and there’s a lot of excitement for the upcoming games.”

Nathan’s coaching resumé is impressive, including his involvement as a high-performance coach with the Australian intellectual disability team for the past two and a half years. Earlier this year he was selected as the first international coach with Nepal’s T20 cricket league and is also involved with consulting the NSW Parramatta District Cricket Club. Nathan said the opportunity to compete for the first time in the Global Games and on home soil meant a lot to the players. “Playing for your country means as much to these cricketers as it does to Steve Smith. They take representing their country to the best of their ability very seriously,” he said. “While there are a few nerves around for the games, overall everyone’s very excited.” And for Nathan, being involved with the players and seeing them grow and achieve their goals is the most rewarding part of coaching.

Places & faces Long-standing president retires By Sonia Clark After nearly 30 years at the helm of the Maleny Show Society, Ivan (Hank) Hankinson has officially hung up his presidency hat but, true to the spirit of his long-standing dedication to the society, he will continue as a committee member. Ivan was born and bred in Maleny and his passion for local agricultural shows followed in his family footsteps, as both his parents were heavily involved in both the Maleny Show and local farming community. As a youngster, Ivan would help set up the show. When he returned to Maleny after a stint in the army in the mid-1970s, he picked up his involvement again. As an owner-operator of a concrete truck business, Ivan would juggle his work and family commitments while helping out at the showgrounds and as part of the show society for years. Ivan said that over the past 40 years or so one of the biggest changes he had seen was how the show evolved from an exhibition event attracting mainly local farming families to a more broad family entertainment event that now attracts people from near and far. “Years ago the Maleny Show would attract mainly dairy people and farmers from the local area. Now we get people coming from all over the place, the towns, the coast and even Brisbane and beyond. We have all types of visitors come along and we’ve got great things to see and do. Lots of families and people are now coming up for a fun day out – not just our local farmers,” Ivan said.

New curators at Vianta Arts After running Vianta Arts for the past few years Michele Deveze has handed the baton to longtime local photographer Ilia Starkovsky and new resident and artist Amanda McKenna. Their first exhibition opened last Friday, when they had the opportunity to get to know the local Beerwah and hinterland arts community. Ilia is a professional photographer who cemented his professional career in Switzerland before returning to Australia and settling in the local area. He has a deep community involvement, including being part of the committee behind the Celebrate Glasshouse Country Street Party, an active member of Rotary and can also be found tutoring photography at the local Beerwah Library. Ilia has taken on the role of art curator at Vianta Arts as a way to further give back to the community and also to be connected with the vibrant arts scene here. Amanda is new to the region having relocated from NSW to settle with her young family in Glass House Mountains. She’s rediscovering her creativity in many mediums including pastel and charcoal as well as textiles. Growing up in rural Tasmania gave Amanda a love of nature and animals that is often depicted in the artwork she produces, which currently focuses on figurative works. Amanda is keen to share her experiences with local artists, while being excited to learn from the enormous variety of professional accomplishment in Sunshine Coast arts.

She said her vision for Vianta Art is a space where professional artists from a range of genres are welcome to exhibit their works without fear or favour, thus expanding on the artistic lexicon of Beerwah and the Sunshine Coast hinterland. She is keen to expand access to the arts at Vianta Arts from just exhibitions to include artist talks, workshops and poetry readings, as well as book launches and readings. Amanda hopes to facilitate collaborations between genres where poetry and artwork can be created as a multifaceted viewing experience. Vianta Arts is based at Vianta Espresso & Wine Bar in Simpson Street, Beerwah. Dana takes out state title

Beerwah's Dana Coolwell has made a strong start to his professional boxing career. The 20-year-old won the Queensland lightweight title after beating tough Townsville boxer Mark Snook at the Redcliffe Leagues Club on Saturday, October 5. Dana earned the belt with a fourth round technical knockout in what was just his third professional bout. His previous two victories ended in similar fashion. It was a big win for Dana and another goal towards bigger things to come. Dana, who trains under coach Stephen Pitt at the Hinterland Boxing Club in Beerwah, stuck to a good game plan after getting a cut to his hair line from a head clash 15 seconds into the bout. Stephen said Dana remained composed and used a mixture of body and head shots behind a strong lead hand to wear his opponent down. With a state title in the bag the next step is

Mooloolah State School 125th celebrations this weekend

Mooloolah State School will mark its 125-year milestone with two days of festivities on Friday and Saturday, October 18-19. Celebrations will kick off this Friday morning with a combined Volunteers Day and Grandparents Day. A special parade will be held at 9am in the school hall featuring the band and choir as well as a performance by the school’s Spanish dancers. Grandparents and volunteers will then be invited to walk around the classrooms to look at displays followed by a special morning tea. After lunch the entire school will be involved in playing outdoor games that were popular with the schoolkids of last century. The Caboolture Historical Society will attend with its portable classroom to demonstrate how a classroom would have looked a century ago, allowing students and visitors to experience the difference in the classrooms of today compared to those in years gone by. Following the planned festivities for the day, there will be an old-fashioned potato sack race. On Saturday, October 19, all past and present students and community members will be invited to attend the school’s official 125th celebrations. The activities will start at 1pm with a parade in the school hall and performances by the school choir, band and Spanish dancers. Mary Moody, the accidental tour guide

Journalist and popular television and radio presenter Mary Moody will visit Maleny on October 23 to talk about her memoir ‘The Accidental Tour Guide’, the latest instalment in Mary's inspirational journey to find her place in the world after the heartbreaking loss of her husband of 42 years to cancer. Mary shot to fame as a presenter on ABC television’s Gardening Australia. However, it was her frank and honest disclosure in her previous memoirs and on national television of an affair with a Frenchman and her subsequent reconciliation with her husband that caught the broader attention of the nation and endeared her to so many along the way. After her first extraordinary trek into the wildflower meadows of the Himalayas, Mary was inspired to lead others through uncharted territories in Morocco, to upmarket European and English gardens and right to the foot of Mount Everest and historic Nepal. ‘The Accidental Tour Guide’ is a warm, moving and thoroughly entertaining story about how to rebuild your life following heartbreaking loss. Mary says she is fortunate that her fascination with plants has opened so many doors and gave her a life more exciting and enriching than she ever imagined. Mary will be at the Maleny Community Centre on Wednesday, October 23 at 10.30 am for an 11am start. Tickets are $15 and bookings are essential at Rosetta Books or via the trybooking website by searching Maleny welcomes Mary Moody.

By Sonia Clark Residents at Twin Cedars by Gateway Lifestyle at Beerburrum are excited to be part of national Get Online Week, which runs from October 14-20. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace officially opened the week-long event on Friday, October 4, which is aligned with the federal government’s Be Connected program that aims to help older Australians improve their digital literacy. Twin Cedars Home Owners Committee chairperson John Pozzey said that the committee was pleased to be awarded $1,500 to be involved in the initiative. Celebration plans to mark the week at the village include how-to online sessions, a barbeque, special morning tea and sausage sizzle. “These inclusive initiatives are great as they allow our residents to be connected with others and be better equipped to do more in a digital world. We hold online digital know-how courses every week here at the village, which are a lot of fun and also teach the basics of online technology such as how to do online banking, access government services such as Centrelink, use Skype, etc,” John said. Get Online Week began overseas as an initiative supported by social change charity The Good Things Foundation Group. The foundation launched in Australia in 2017 and the first Australian online week was held last year. Working with government and community stakeholders and commercial partners, this year more than 900 community groups and organisations have committed to hosting events throughout the country, which aim to encourage people with limited digital skills to make the most of the internet. “Over the last few years we have run regular digital classes and have two dedicated on-site computers to access the internet. Residents also bring their own laptops, tablets or iPad and we get up to 20 people attending classes, which are fun, socially engaging and informative,” John said. Andrew Wallace with John Pozzey

You Said It Water woes

Perhaps the reason Brian Stallworthy's letters (GC&M News, September 11 and October 2) elicited no comment is that we are all short of answers. Dorothea Mackellar wrote 'My Country' in 1904, so "droughts and flooding rains" and seeing "the cattle die" have been with us through more than 30 prime ministers. It would be a bit mean to blame the incumbent. Another reason may be that his comment that "the Ord River Scheme in Western Australia can supply the whole of Australia with water..." is so preposterous that no one bothered to comment. So I will. The Ord River Dam is about 130km from the ocean. A mountain about 20km north, has an elevation of 397m. So the water in Lake Argyle must have an elevation of less than 300m and contains 20,000 crocodiles, so would need a good strong filter. Charleville is on the Warrego River and its elevation is 294m, so somewhere just south of the Carnarvon Gorge may be a good place to make a lake by damming the Warrego. From the Ord River that would be about 2150 kms as the crow flies, which is a good long way to drive a tunnel boring machine and a very gentle slope The water could then go across to the Maranoa River and perhaps the Bayonne so that any water left over would flow towards the Murray, via the Condamine, the longest river in Australia (regardless of what the Blues call it). Fred Gee Elimbah

Re: Brian Stallworthy’s letter (September 11)

Delivering water security is a priority for Deb Frecklington and the LNP team. There’s nothing more vital than water security in Queensland and Labor’s policies are literally bleeding our regions dry. Not only is Labor failing to build new dams they’re actively reducing the size of existing dams. Whether it’s scrapping plans for new dams or reducing the capacity of existing dams, it’s clear that the Palaszczuk Labor government are antidams, anti-regions and anti-farmers. Despite worsening drought conditions, Queensland has gone over a decade without any new dams built in regional Queensland. On top of this, Labor is slashing drought funding for farming families over the next four years. This is vital assistance that can be the difference between saving the lives of starving animals. It’s another example of the Labor government not caring about regional Queenslanders or our farmers who are suffering under horrendous drought conditions, with two-thirds of Queensland drought declared. The LNP has a plan to drought-proof Queensland by building new dams and unlocking the potential of existing water infrastructure. An investment in water security is an investment in Queensland jobs. The LNP understands that dams are catalysts for boosting economic production in agriculture, resources and industry, as well as improving regional water security. We will set up a Queensland dam company to immediately begin work on securing the water that Queensland needs. The Queensland dam company will be Queensland’s version of the Snowy Hydro authority, the company set up nearly 70 years ago to sort out and deliver the Snowy Hydro 18

CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

Scheme, a project that changed our nation. Only the LNP will deliver the drought-proofing projects like Nullinga Dam, Rookwood Weir, Urannah Dam, raising the wall and increasing capacity at the Burdekin Falls Dam and establish the Queensland dam company that Queensland so desperately needs. This is a comprehensive plan to deliver water security and drought-proof Queensland. Andrew Powell MP Glass House

Re: Our roads are dangerous

I personally absolutely agree that we need more and safer pathways, and my commitment to this has seen many pathways and missing links delivered in Division 1 since 2012. It remains both a passion and a priority for me but it would help if the state carried its share of the weight. I have been calling for the state to upgrade its Steve Irwin Way to progressively include a separated cycle way (the jargon is an active transport corridor) as a priority. I have also met with and formally requested Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey to integrate an active transport corridor into the B2N duplication project, which would be a brilliant outcome. Either way, cyclists or walkers would have safer pathways between our townships. Please consider contacting Minister Bailey and add your voice to the call. Your council rates only go so far and we cannot do it all by ourselves. Cr Rick Baberowski Division 1 councillor Sunshine Coast Council

Do you know these sweet-toothed offenders?

Contributed by Senior Constable Susan Lowndes Volunteers at the Mooloolah Pony Club were devastated to find their club house had been broken into last month and property stolen. In addition to damaging property and taking a quantity of cash, the offenders have taken some unusual property items. More than 40 cans of coke, water bottles, a quantity of bagged lollies and some toilet paper were also stolen. Due to the nature of the items taken, police are hopeful that someone in the community may have noticed something. Open garden at Montville

Thank you to all who attended our open garden at The Shambles in Montville on October 5-6. Thank you to all our helpers - Christina, Eleanor, Denise and John. Special thanks to James (with guitar), Darryl, Susan, Glennis and Rowena for manning the gate, operating the plant stall and serving refreshments at The Rising Scone. Thank you also to Tyson, John and James for items for our collectables and vintage stall (the Snoopy collection has gone to good homes!). As a result of all of your efforts we are able to donate $4500 to the Western Queensland Drought Appeal (www.wqda.org.au). That means in 2019 our Easter open garden and this latest spring event have raised more than $10,000. This money will be used to buy cash cards for drought affected families in a number of western districts. No matter how dry it has been here, it pales to insignificance alongside people living on severely drought affected land in western Queensland. One visitor to our garden was from Goondiwindi and described how huge old gum trees are dying along the river bed on his land. We believe that everyone who came along over the weekend was very understanding that our garden was suffering in the dry and somewhat amazed that most of the plants remained lush and are hardy enough to survive without watering. It has always been our mantra to plant tough, resilient plants that can adapt to all conditions. We also suggest that people over plant when starting a garden, getting trees and shrubs in early to provide that much needed shade in summer. It is the quick growing and strong perennials that shade the soil too while the garden gets established. It was lovely to chat to people visiting and to see many inspired to go and work on their gardens. Kyleigh and Michael Simpson Montville

Did you know? With mostly dirt roads for travel in the 1920s and early '30s, it took the local ambulance at least four hours to make the journey to Brisbane from Landsborough.

This event is a safe and alcohol-free event and is especially aimed at kids of all ages. No need for children to wander the streets trick or treating as it will all be available in a safe and non-threatening environment. Parents can relax and enjoy the attractions as much as the kids. Entry is only $5 and there is also plenty of on-site parking. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the village attractions such as the haunted house, spooky forest, haunted hospital, Gory Bros butchery, Professor Weirdo’s laboratory and the olde morgue, to name just a few. As well, there’ll be plenty of food outlets including the Village Café, Boiling Billy Tearoom and Thai Food Café for the hungry little witches, warlocks and wizards. Dress up the kids and bring the whole family down to the Caboolture Historical Village, Beerburrum Road, Caboolture, on October 31 from 4-8.30pm and check out the heaps of attractions and new displays, all created by the incredibly hardworking village volunteers.

The kids were divided into groups to test their skills and coordination in egg and spoon, sack and three-legged races on the oval. Perhaps the most popular event was the opportunity to throw water balloons at our very brave principal, Mrs Kim Fillery. Teachers and parents alike showed off their water balloon hurling skills, catching many student spectators by surprise! The celebration was wrapped up with a lifesized game of Hungry Hippos, which turned out to be much harder that it looked, and a chance to jump and slide on the enormous Harriet and Elaina in the Will in the egg and three-legged race spoon race

Spring Fair showcases school

The River School in Maleny would like to extend a warm invitation to the entire community for its annual Spring Fair on Saturday, November 2. Held in the picturesque school grounds, the 170 students will present stalls of crafts and foods made by the children and their families and based on their sentient, vegetarian diet and neohumanism philosophises. To learn what neohumanist education has to offer, the principal Anne Donoghoe will host a tour at 11am through the spectacular learning environment to encourage you to enrol your child at the school. All age groups will be catered for with a huge blowup waterslide for the kids, obstacle course, and art and craft activities showcasing local artists. Fresh food and drinks will be flowing including homemade iceblocks, lemonades, beautiful curries, vegetarian sliders and, of course, local coffee for the grown-ups. The hills will be alive with the sound of the school’s music department plus some special guests to keep you dancing all day long. This is the school’s day to celebrate with the local community and, as an independent school, is its major fundraiser to help continue improvements at the school. The day is supported by many local businesses who have generously donated prizes for what is possibly the best value for money raffle in the region, with thousands of dollars in prizes to be won. Set the date in your diary and get the free bus from the Maleny Showgrounds, Cooke Park or Palm Street depot to The River School (parking is limited and $15 at the school). The buses will run to and from the school from 9.45am. The fair is open from 10am-2pm. See you there!

Road safety fun Recently the children in the kindergarten and senior kindy classes at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre were treated to a fun and engaging road safety presentation given by the RACQ. Early childhood teacher Silvia Thomas said the presentation was both informative and interactive - and the children loved it! “It was wonderful to see the children so attentive, and I and Miss Nikole, who is lead educator in the senior kindy room, thought it was great to have the basics of road safety reinforced and for the children to be reminded to think about what they are doing when it comes to road safety,” Silvia said. The children learned about road crossing and how to "stop, look, listen and think". Each group was invited to practise road safety rules and learn more about what traffic light colours mean, what lollypop crossing people do, how to buckle up safely in cars and how to exit vehicles kerbside. Silvia said that since transitioning back into her current position from her role as the centre’s educational leader, she has enjoyed reconnecting with her group of four and five-year olds, and she loves being able to help the children build practical skills and knowledge such as learning about road safety. “This is a lovely age to teach as the children can verbalise themselves and you can really key into what they are thinking,” Sylvia said. “They are fun and have so

much energy. They certainly make you feel alive!” With a wealth of knowledge behind her and decades of teaching experience, Silvia says she enjoys the strong focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities at the centre, as well as plenty of nature-inspired play. The interactive Smart Board is an exciting learning tool for the kindergarten children and examples of classroom activities have included learning journeys based around sea animals, African animals and lots of games and activities that provide numeracy and literacy experience. A particular highlight has been spending time in the centre’s vegetable garden with the children enjoying being able to grow, pick and eat lettuce and tomatoes. Centre director Dee Shaw said that she was excited to share information on a new centre initiative - the pre-school postcard exchange. Dee said that through her teaching networks she had registered Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre with a group of other centres to share postcards both locally and internationally. She said community connections were a key focus at the centre and so it was nice to expand that into exploring worldwide connections. “It's been great to expand the children’s focus to include a wider community perspective and we have linked up with the program to connect with centres in the US, England and Greece, amongst others,” Dee said.

Stop, look, listen and think As part of the new kindergarten initiative, the children will also explore world maps and the process of writing and posting postcards to new friends overseas. “We’re looking forward to incorporating a visit to our local post office and to show our children the old school approach to correspondence,” Dee said. “They are excited to be in contact with other children overseas and it’s a great opportunity to learn more about our world and our place in it and wider community connections.” For an obligation free tour of the centre, or even to just ask a few questions, please call 5438 7311, or call in to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary). Supporting working families is important at the centre and long day care hours are available if required. Concession card holders may be eligible for the government funded kindergarten program subsidy.

From the churches The current long drought has resulted in some devastating experiences for many people in rural Queensland and New South Wales. Some have run out of water for stock and crops. Some have suffered from destructive fires, losing livestock, farming infrastructure and homes. Some have found their small businesses floundering because the farming community cannot afford to spend. The drought covers so much of eastern Australia that even if we are not directly affected we all know someone who is and we empathise with them. I encourage all readers to support the relief efforts being held in your locality. Such practical support not only helps our sisters and brothers through these difficult times but shows those who are struggling they are not alone. However, it is not only the visible, physical impacts of the drought that must be addressed. Many are shattered emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. We don’t often hear about those who lose all hope, which can cause broken relationships and psychological break-down.

Rev Bruce Johnson Maleny Uniting Church Recovery from these inner traumas can take longer than the outward impacts of drought and fires. These impacts also need to be addressed through community support and the building of resilience. While there is appropriate attention given to ways of making the country more drought proof and fire proof through better soil management, water management and better forms of vegetation management, attention also needs to be given to developing personal resilience. How can we develop an inner strength that allows us to survive life’s traumas? Down through the centuries Christians have found that spiritual practices like prayer, meditation or mindfulness, that regularly incorporate worship and Bible reading have nurtured an inner strength that has sustained them through times of crisis and trauma. These practices enhance our inner worlds and equip us to cope when our outer worlds are shattered. If you have never considered the development of your inner world, why not make contact with a church in your area and begin to explore ways of building your resilience. You can also join others praying for an end to the drought and recovery for communities across the country.

Health &Beauty Be breast aware – it could save your life Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan is reminding Queenslanders about the importance of early detection when it comes to the most common cancer diagnosed in women. One in eight Queensland women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and one in 41 women will die from the disease. When was the last time you checked your breasts? Before you had children? Last month? Yesterday? Many women can’t recall the last time they took a few minutes to conduct a personal check for any changes. Yet a simple breast check could save your life. October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month and early detection remains one of the most important factors in improving survival rates for

breast cancer. More than 3,300 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Queensland. Of those diagnosed, 3,321 are female and around 550 die from the disease. It sounds simple and common sense, but not enough women are checking their breasts. Ms McMillan says women should get to know their breasts and if they notice any changes, make an appointment with their GP straight away. The Queensland Government’s latest figures show that in 2015-2016, 56% of women aged 50-74 years participated in the BreastScreen Queensland program.

Ms McMillan urges all Queensland women to check they are up to date with recommended screenings. Women should consult their GP if they notice a persistent lump, lumpiness or thickening of their breast, changes to the nipple or discharge, any change to the shape, feel, size or colour of the breast, dimpling, puckering, or any unusual breast pain. Women need to know their breasts better, become breast aware and participate in recommended screening. Your personal health is too important to ignore. For more information or advice about breast awareness and screening, visit cancerqld.org.au or call the Cancer Council information and support line on 13 11 20.

My advice is, if you enjoy an Italian meal then you should definitely take a look at the menu. I reckon you might just find it as difficult as I did to choose just one item. Fortunately they open from 5pm for dinner, so you have time to pace yourself and try a few courses. They also have a number of sharing plates and great entrée options, which means you get to have a small amount of lots of different things. Also many of the menu items are gluten free, including the pasta that is made in-house, and pizza options, and there is a good selection of vegetarian meals as well!

Out & About Garden supports drought relief

When Kyleigh and Michael Simpson opened their garden, The Shambles at Montville, on October 5-6 they were able to raise $4,500 for the Western Queensland Drought Appeal. This is the second weekend this year that they have shared their beloved garden with locals and visitors. The two events helped them raise more than $10,000, which will be used to buy cash cards for drought-affected families in a number of western districts.

Handmade markets a success

The first Maleny Handmade Markets kicked off last Sunday at the Maleny Community Centre and it definitely lived up to the promise of having plenty of handmade, unique and quirky items for sale. Community photographer Marsha Kelly captured some of the highlights of the day in these photos. The event brought together the local area’s best craftspeople, authors, woodworkers, designers, artisans and food creators to showcase and share what they have created. Following the success of the first market the organisers are looking forward to future markets in 2020, on February 16, May 24, August 16 and a date yet to be confirmed for November. To keep up to date with what’s happening at the market make sure you like their Facebook page Maleny Handmade Markets.

The Glasshouse Mountains Ulysses Club will hold its annual Valley Rally from this Friday, October 18, with campers arriving bright and early to catch up with mates and meet new friends at the Beerwah Sportsground. The club is keen to encourage locals to come along and enjoy the great entertainment on offer. On Friday night the band B-Rocked is performing and on Saturday there will be market stalls, a show 'n' shine, games and a gymkhana followed by live music with Linda Street. Everyone is welcome to come along for the whole event. You can camp for the weekend for $30, one night for $20 and $10 for day visitors. This year the profits from the weekend will go to RACQ Life Flight Rescue. Thanks to the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade for helping with the gate and parking. Pippa and the Jazz Notes Showband

One of the most sought after and admired performers on the Sun Australian jazz scene, Pippa 20 Wilson, will appear exclusively for the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club at the Caloundra RSL Club function room on Sunday, October 20 from 1.30-4pm. Pippa has a rare vocal quality that snaps audiences to full attention, swinging hot or cool with the great standards from the 1920s through to the 1950s and beyond. Pippa has been singing jazz since 1979 when she made her debut with the New Harlem Jazz Band. Most of her work now is with Melbourne’s top musicians and she is a respected and popular member of the jazz fraternity. Pippa will be supported by the Jazz Notes Showband, with Ann Craig (flute), Peter Uppman (trumpet), Kevin Blazé (guitar), Michael Harding (piano), John Conley (bass) and Rodney Forde (drums). Book online at www.sunshinecoastjazzclub.net.au/bookings or contact Richard on 0427 782 960 or Julie on 0412 789 957. Tickets are $20 for jazz club members, $22.50 for seniors and $25 for non-members. A credit card facility is available.

Movies Wild Rose

with Jan Flynn from Maleny Film Society

Rose-Lynn, a fiery young Glaswegian singer, dreams of performing at Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. She does not see being an ex-con with a penchant for pub brawling and a single mother of two as obstacles to achieving her goal. However, her redoubtable mother (played by ever-impressive Julie Waters) has other ideas. She wants her daughter to "make something of herself" and accept responsibility for bringing up her own children, rather than expecting her to take on the role while Rose-Lynn pursues her adolescent dream. Undeterred, Rose-Lynn (played brilliantly by Irish actor Jessie Buckley) takes a cleaning job by day and resumes singing at night with a country and western band, wearing an electronic tracking device beneath her white cowgirl boots. The appeal of country and western music to Glasgow audiences has been said to lie in its genuine voicing of the grassroots struggles experienced on both sides of the Atlantic. Through a mixture of gritty determination, exceptional talent and luck, Rose-Lynn predictably achieves her dream. This feel-good film with a universally appealing theme is the perfect vehicle for Jessie Buckley to showcase her gloriously lyrical voice. And, besides, who doesn't love a story of winning fame against all odds? When: Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street Food and Drinks: Saturday dinner 6-7 pm catered by Wild Rocket. Tea/coffee and homemade slice stand, drinks available at cash bar. Doors open at 6pm. Sunday tea/coffee and homemade slice stand, drinks available at cash bar. Doors open at 3.30pm Movie: Screens 7.15 pm Saturday, 4pm Sunday, running time 100 mins, rating M Cost: Tickets available for members at Maleny Information Centre $8 or website www.malenyfilmsociety.info (members can buy up to two tickets for non-members). Non-members can buy tickets at the door (but be early) adults $13, students with ID $8, children under 16 $5. Info: www.malenyfilmsociety.info

In the Garden Organic fertilisers - are they really organic? One of the tricky parts of going organic in the garden is to make sure your plants receive all the nutrients they need to thrive, flower or set fruit while adhering to the ethos of being organic. Plants need a complex mixture of macro-nutrients (like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) as well as a whole suite of micro-nutrients, trace elements and minerals. Sometimes it's these minor nutrients that can be difficult to provide just by using manures, compost, seaweed and fish emulsions. Organic feeding of your garden also doesn’t mean you have to go back to nature and make up some sort of magical brew under the light of a full Moon, dancing naked around a fire and chanting pagan incantations. If that sort of thing would upset the neighbours, you can be rest assured that there is a great range of approved and certified organic fertilisers you can buy off the shelf at one of the local produce or hardware stores (you don’t have to drive off the hinterland either as the local ones will have everything you need).

Orchid Society report

Glasshouse Country Orchid Society held another highly successful Spring Show, with more than 1,000 people through the door over the two-day event. Pictured is one of the society's life members, Italo Frizzo, presenting novice champion, Joan Sayer, with her trophy. Other winners were the lucky visitors who took home prizes in the big raffle. Congratulations and first prize in the raffle went to Denis, with ticket purple E46, second to Emily with ticket red E18 and third to Bev with ticket red F90. Marion won the best floral art raffle after choosing number 7. The society thanked all involved for making this wonderful annual event such a success. The members hope to see you all again next year for an even more spectacular show.

Ground yourself with groundcovers with Spencer and Karen Shaw

When we think of local native plants we often just think of trees and shrubs but South East Queensland is rich in its diversity of local native plants that can be used as groundcovers in your garden. Groundcovers stabilise your soil, cool the roots of trees and provide food and refuge for native fauna. Many exotic groundcovers are traditional favourites but they are also notorious weeds in you gardens and bushland. Tradescantia, Syngonium, Singapore daisy and the polka dot plant are just a few of the worst and they pose a genuine threat to Australian bushland. The solution is to control and eradicate these exotics and go for local native plants for groundcover in your garden. At Forest Heart we’re stocking a great range of local native groundcovers that includes native Plumbago, native mints, sunray, yellow buttons, blue harebells, koala bells, fan flowers, Goodenia, Hibbertia, pink tongue, paper daisies, Lobelia, flax lilies, Lomandra, kangaroo grass, Poa, maidenhair ferns, rasp ferns, native violet and many more. Add to this mix some other great native groundcovers, including grevilleas, and there’s plenty of choice for planting native plants in your garden. So, do yourself a favour and plant native plants. They’re good value, diverse in form and shape, beautiful and great for the local environment.

FOREST HEART

Two of the most common brands are Searles and Richgro, which both have a fairly diverse range of options for different types of plants, gardens and situations. Searles is a Kilcoy-based company and its range of organic fertilisers goes by the name Kickalong. Richgro has a line of organic fertilisers called Organics. Both are marked as a BFA-registered organic products. BFA stands for Biological Farmers Association and its subsidiary body is ACO Certification Ltd (previously called Australian Certified Organic) – a body that assesses and certifies a product as being organic. ACO is Australia’s largest certifier for organic and biodynamic produce and has more than 2000 operators within its certification system. ACO has certified that these products are an "allowable input", meaning that they can be utilised in a certified organic farming system. Being certified gives you the peace of mind that they are doing the right thing by you and the soil. Lots of things tag themselves as organic but without a certification tick of approval they’re just empty words.

The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Ken Barker On Thursday, October 3 all games played were association croquet. Donna Manning beat Ken Barker 9-4 while Vince Carbery went down to Nick Cram 3-12. Helen Andrews and Bev Sockhill teamed up on lawn two to beat Gillian Bradley 5-1. On Sunday, October 5 a six-ball game of association croquet was played by Kath Smith, Donna and Ken. In this little played variation of the game three players have two balls each and the order of turn is fixed. Scores were not recorded because of the

informal nature of the game although some nice tactics and turns were executed. A party of about 20 volunteers from the Visitor Information Centre in Maleny visited to sample the game on Wednesday, October 9. They were treated to a short explanation by Vince Carbery and then split into groups of four to try their hand at golf croquet. Some very fine shots were observed. In the attached photo, Jane Caldwell, Dulcie Williams and Noel Kuskopf watch with bated breath as Scott Lanyon tries to squeeze the white ball between the green and the pink in order to make his hoop. The shot required pinpoint accuracy and only missed by the narrowest of margins. Playing times have changed for summer. New times are 2pm for 2.30 pm. Play days are on Thursdays and Sundays on the green and cheerful lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Our web address is www.rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au. Sport Easy Find Classifieds Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Graeme Glover What a great week with the rain. Never had so much fun and the gardens are starting to look fantastic. Last Wednesday night was well supported with some new faces showing up and some new teams being formed for our summer competition. This is great as new teams bring new challenges to the somewhat confident Musketeers. Friday scroungers was a washout - started, stopped, recommenced and a fun roll up was had by the nine brave souls who were like kids playing in the rain. The handicapper chose not to penalise anybody but the organiser rewarded the brave. Congratulations to rink winners for the great form under heavy skies. Well done Doug McGufficke, Ian (Dicko) Dickson and Jim King. The Scotty Fawkes Memorial was played in great conditions on Sunday. Thanks to visitors from Kilcoy, Mapleton and Mooloolaba plus our contingent of bowlers. What a great day. Thanks to our major local businesses who sponsored the day - Mitre 10 and Maleny Paint Supplies provide ongoing support to our community. May I remind all members and friends that locals supporting locals keeps towns like ours vibrant. The winners of the various prizes came from all clubs but the big prizes remained on the hill with Maleny bowlers - Kay and Roy Gesch and Miles Allen.

Witta Tennis

Contributed by Pauline Fraley ln spite of Witta Wagtails loss to Maleny Magics, the competition and tennis between the two teams was enjoyable. Thanks to Jan Maguire, Cynthia Garvie, Sonia Douglas and a special thanks to Jill Murtagh for filling in. Whistlers played at Witta against the Maroochydore Meteors. After a few weeks' break we struggled a bit to get back to our tennis. We didn't get many games but we were happy to be back on the court. Score was 26-41 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats and the Wikings had the bye. Witta Wompoos had a convincing win over Nambour Nambas to complete their season qualifying for the division two vets finals. Denis O'Neil refused to surrender games to the opposition with an outstanding four sets with a loss of only four games. Congratulations for an outstanding win by a solid team consisting of Anthony De Waard, Andrew Blowes, Denis O'Neil, Jim and Paula Cudmore and a very effective fill in of Stacey English. Just for Laughs Advice worth paying for

A man went to his lawyer and said: "My neighbour owes me $500 and he won’t pay up. What should I do?" "Do you have any proof he owes you the money?" the lawyer asked. "Nope," replied the man. "OK, then write him a letter asking him for the $5,000 he owes you," the lawyer said. "But it's only $500," the man replied. "Precisely. That’s what he will reply and then you’ll have your proof!"

Your Stars ARIES March 21 – April 20 You start off with a restless week but after the weekend do not permit obstinacy on your part to anyone who has the seal of authority. Shrewd ideas are available for making headway in your business affairs. There is deception in relationships from Monday to Wednesday. It is, however, excellent for donating to a charity. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 There is a wave of unexpected security, both emotional and monetary, uplifting your local activities. Conversations are intense, focussed and connecting you deeply into family affairs. Your heart and soul are dreamily wrapped up in one special friend or partner. Get up to date with some home cooking over the weekend. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 With the Moon in your sign, connecting with the bold planet Mars, it is time for you to play the game of life with all the zest that you can command. Children have ears so be careful what you gossip about if they are within earshot. Making up your mind is not really easy for the next couple of days as there are too many options. CANCER June 24 – July 22 You trust your feelings again. That goes for a special friend as there is a mutual compatibility. Let a work or wellness agenda expand to maximum potential. Friday and Saturday are down times after a hectic week so a good rest is restorative. The Moon in your sign at the weekend invites you into an exciting social whirl.

Week Beginning 16/10/2019

Ever practical

A woman took an afternoon nap. When she woke up, she told her husband: "I just dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace. What do you think it means?" "You'll know tonight," he said. That evening the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it to find a book entitled ‘The Meaning of Dreams’.

LEO July 23 – August 22 It is best not to wear your heart on your sleeve from Wednesday through to weekend. It is just that some people will be more grumpy than cooperative now. There is a successful Jupiter/Pluto influence that you can use to make positive changes. As you are aware by now, many people are in a whirlpool of shifting energies. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Last minute details about a trip get caught up in knots. Therefore, during the week hold off on making concrete plans as the world is in such a crazy place many souls may be caught out by the collapse of travel plans. Your thinking cap is on and you see through the heart of any matter and arrive at an excellent solution. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 If a trip is necessary it certainly can provide you with a chance to escape tensions at home. Be very brief in exchanges with people around home base and avoid those minefield topics that can set someone exploding in rage. Problem-solving abilities are abundant and just mean you really have to focus your attention. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This is a week to understand the depth of shared feelings and resources. Sometimes it is hard to know who to trust. However, over the weekend someone brings you a golden private connection. Venus is now in your sign and that bolsters strength and certainty in a primary relationship. You may be in a dreamy romantic mood!

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 21 Heading towards the weekend you eventually sail into calmer waters. Perhaps you could try shopping off the beaten track by taking a country road. You never know what treasures you might find! There is a good stabilising Venus/Saturn aspect, which means a relationship development can certainly be very reassuring now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 This week you will resonate to the grounded, productive Taurus Moon. Then as the Moon moves through Gemini, a few little annoyances can get in the way. They may be caused by interference from a child or companion who are not on your wavelength. You get a chance over the weekend to visit new restaurants. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 There is no lack of variety in your life at this time. You do, however, feel that things could run a little more smoothly. You are now making headway into a number of new ways, not the least of which will be to get needed answers and to make some great adjustments. Knowing that a job has been done well gives enormous satisfaction. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Before the weekend you will have to push your agenda and be focussed on it as there are erratic trends in the workplace around you. You will be tuned into emotional energies, sensing the right action and good directions. A good strong thinking cap attitude lets you see hidden values and provides deep insights to important questions.
