Local News Chappy funding slashed Glass House Mountains State School has been shocked to find out that the funding they have received through the Education department for the past four years for their two day a week school chaplain has been reduced by half for 2016. Chairman of the school’s Local Chaplaincy Committee Andrew Pearce said that the group was frustrated to receive this news in the last week of school and to have not been given a genuine reason for the decision. “We have since been informed that our school is one of only a select few in our area of 53 schools that has been affected in this way.” The Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said this decision has come out of left field with nobody expecting it. “The timing means that it will be very difficult for principals and the school community to get together now, so close to Christmas, to work out how they are going to fund what they consider is a critical service for their students next year,” he said. The school’s Local Chaplaincy Committee was formed in September, has 10 members that include an ex-long serving chaplain, parents, local minister, teachers and the school administration team and has very strong support from the P&C.

Chappy Nick with Andrew Powell and Andrew Pearce Andrew Pearce said that the committee has been actively working to set clear goals and direction for the future of its service, so the news of the funding cut is a, "kick in the guts." “We were planning to move from the current two days to four days a week in 2017 through a community awareness and strategic fundraising program. “I believe we deserve a detailed explanation as to how this decision was made and to have the decision amended to the current amount to provide us with the full $20,000,” Mr Pearce said. Andrew Powell is calling on Education Minister, Kate Jones, to urgently intervene to make sure that Glass House Mountains State School is not worse off for next year.

We can now all enjoy a cup of award winning locally grown tea, courtesy of the Collins families from Bellthorpe and their Arakai Estate artisan teas. Darryl and Lorraine Collins have owned their Bellthorpe property for many years, growing crops such as avocados and farm forestry trees. Then with the help of their son Brendan and wife Kristie Collins, they moved to diversify. According to Brendan, they researched a lot of options before coming across the idea of growing tea commercially. “We have a couple of tea addicts in the family, and when we looked into the requirements for growing tea, we found we had almost perfect conditions here,” Brendan explained. “We decided upon Japanese green tea varieties – they are just a species of Camellia – which prefer good fertile slightly acidic soil, high rainfall, and a milder sub-tropical climate.” The decision five years ago to start planting and experimenting with teas has paid off, with them winning three prestigious Golden Leaf Awards at the recent Australian International Tea Expo. Arakai Estate won Best Australian Black Tea, Best Australian Green Tea, and Overall Winner: Green Tea Category. “We were blown away,” said Brendan. “We entered just to see how we rated against the well established Australian tea producers and didn’t even attend the awards ceremony as we thought we wouldn’t stand a chance. “But to win best black tea and best green tea in Australia, then capped off with the best green

Brendan, Kristie, Lorraine and Darryl Collins with their Golden Leaf Awards tea from all-comers – including well regarded international producers – was beyond our wildest dreams,” he said. Brendan describes their teas as Japanese green tea varieties produced in a Chinese/Taiwanese style for the Australian taste. “They have sweet oolong influences, with flavours not normally found in traditional black or green teas. They are best enjoyed in multiple, short steepings that bring out the beautiful, changing flavours of an Asian-influenced tea. “It all comes down to the growing environment, harvesting at the right time, the special care taken with processing and the quality control.” The award winning Arakai Estate hand-crafted artisan teas can be purchased by contacting them directly through their website – www. arakaiestate.com.au– or via their Facebook page (just search for ‘ArakaiEstate’).

The Australian Bushman Glass House Mountains local Jamie Hazelden, known as the Australian Bushman, has been seen on Channel 10’s The Offroad Adventure Show, and is a true Aussie bushman at heart, having spent much of his life exploring our great country.

In fact, Jamie loved sharing his passion for off road adventure so much he decided to make a living from it. Jamie owns and operates JTS (Jamie’s Touring Solutions) at Kunda Park. When Jamie is not in-store, face to face with his customers, he is hitting the tracks around Australia filming. Jamie’s passion for helping others experience the outdoors and his barrel of laughs attitude make him a great presenter to watch in action. Jamie is already a well-known identity in the 4WD and camping community and he is passionate about engaging audiences in the spectacular beauty, rich indigenous heritage and local history of our country. Jamie is also keen to raise awareness of how adventure enthusiasts can enjoy our natural habitat and National Parks in ways that are respectful of the surrounding environment – for example ways in which 4WDs can legally go into National Parks. Jamie has previously been involved in 4WD action DVDs and has current commitments filming for the Channel 10 series – which he has been involved with for the last three years. While the Australian Bushman series commenced in late 2014, filming for the DVD series has had to fit around Jamie’s considerable other commitments. To date two episodes are available on DVD with another three in the pipeline.

By Sonia Clark

Inspiration for the series comes from other ‘bushies’, Jamie’s inherent love of travel throughout Australia and his overwhelming desire to inspire others to “get out and see this great country!” Travelling around in his Land Rover Defender 130, both episodes have taken months of planning as he explores iconic off road tracks. The episodes involve in-depth research, countless conversations with locals and also involve approval processes for vehicle access and filming. The actual episodes take around a week to film and require a team of around four to five people to make it happen. So far Jamie has featured the off road tracks of Glass House Mountains and the well known Creb Tack of Far North Queensland. Both episodes seek to highlight local indigenous culture and refer to local personalities to enhance stories of the sometimes little known local history and area. Jamie has always been a mad camping and 4WD enthusiast since growing up in Glass House Mountains in the early 1980s. He was first introduced to the adventure potential of 4WD by local long term Glass House Mountains resident Wally Tucker and bought his first vehicle in the late 1980s. Once he had a family of his own, camping and 4WD adventures became a way of life. Jamie started JTS eight years ago and created the business to enable people like himself to have the 4WD accessories and camping equipment to travel around the country. Since then Jamie has enjoyed a growing social media following for his adventures as well as a successful retail business.

“There is so much to see in Australia and I want to share this with people. You’ve really got to get out and see this amazing country!” he said. If you would like to see Jamie in action, he is featured on Chanel 10 in the summer series of ‘The Offroad Adventure Show’ on Sunday at 1.00pm. It started last Sunday so you can still catch the other three episodes. For more information see www.australianbushman.com.au

Progress made at public forum More than 60 people attended the recent Bruce Highway and Caloundra Road interchange upgrades public forum organised by Caloundra MP Mark McArdle. The forum was attended by various environment and community groups along with residents and business owners. It was the last opportunity to provide feedback to Main Roads for any final concerns to be included in the Stakeholder Register. Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said he was pleased with the result of the forum. “This was a good opportunity for a variety of important local stakeholders to have their final say,” Mr McArdle said. “My office will now document all concerns raised at this forum and formally provide it to Main Roads so they can urgently include it in the Stakeholder Register. “I thank Main Roads for their co-operation and commitment to consulting with the local community on this multi-million dollar project.” Project Director Gavin Soward acknowledged the key issues were the impact to the Steve Irwin Way Forest, and access to the Aussie World Precinct, and said he had a big commitment from DTMR and the Minister on getting good outcomes. Main Roads gave assurances that included: - establishing a commitment in regards to environmental management plans, creating fauna underpasses and fencing to direct animals into such underpasses; - ensuring there is adequate drainage in the Steve Irwin Way Forest to avoid the area drying out; - there will be no impact on the Mooloolah Cemetery;

- ensuring there is minimal disruption to access to the businesses at the Aussie World precinct before, during and after construction. Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey was unable to attend, however he did write to Mr McArdle and advised '… the shortlisted tenderers have been directed to prioritise the reduction of impacts on the Beerwah State Forest to the greatest practicable extent, the improvement of access to the Aussie World precinct, and to investigate the possibility of retaining the southbound exist 190 to Pignata Road.' The Stakeholder Register is crucial for the two competing tenderers of the project, Fulton Hogan/Seymour Whyte Joint Venture and The Infrastructure Group, to adhere to in the final competitive process. The shortlisted tenderers now have until March to submit their design. It’s expected the tender will be awarded mid next year, with construction expected to start late 2016. Maleny Lions best in district Members of the Maleny-Blackall Range Lions club are celebrating being voted Club of the Year from the 75 Lions Clubs in District 201Q3 for the year 2014-15. They were presented with the award at the recent Conference in Ipswich. This follows the MDSRC's best club in Maleny award received in April. The seven criteria for the award included Service to the Community, Membership Development, Communication and Leadership, as well as fulfilling functions at club level within Lions International. Mrs Helen Johnston, the Club President for that year, was pleased to be able to include within the service criterion, major weed eradication projects which will continue for the next 12 months. Sixteen thousand was raised for Lions Medical Research through the Personality Quest and their entrant Kirstin Grigor. Of special note was the net increase in club membership of 14, the establishment of a branch club in Mooloolah, with a membership of 11 at the end of the financial year, and the outstanding success of the yearly Welcome Dinner in Maleny, which has now expanded to include one in Flaxton for new residents in that area. Communication is an important criterion in all clubs and this was met by media releases, participation in town events, their own website and Facebook page, as well as contributing to the Maleny town Facebook page, for information for members as well as non-member browsing. The club newsletter is now available at one of Maleny’s coffee shops. Reporting to District level is important as this information is passed on to

Thanks to the amazing work of Jen and Simon Farrell of the Hideaway, helped by Teagan Birmingham and Jackie Croucher, many local children and families enjoyed a day of fun and celebration at Glasshouse Country Uniting Church grounds in Beerwah on Sunday, December 6. Santa thrilled everyone arriving on a fire engine to hand out donated gifts to many who would not receive but for the generosity of local businesses and community members who provided facepainting, basketball shooting, jumping castle, craft making, Christmas goodies, animal farm, music, fun and lots of food. A wonderful happy day was shared by all who attended. Special thanks to Glasshouse Country Uniting Church for the use of their grounds and support on the day.

Sore neck and shoulders?

Christmas Celebration Exhibition ‘A Little Piece of the Sun’ ‘A Little Piece of the Sun’ is definitely a Vianta Arts exhibition that you won’t want to miss! With 13 of our many excellent hinterland artists exhibiting small (or not so small!) works glowing with warmth and light, there’s bound to be something for everyone. From Joy Joyce’s fine watercolours of assemblages of birds, to Robyn Shaw’s impressionistic landscapes shimmering with summer light, Anne McArthur’s carefully constructed and detailed landscapes to Bernardine Hine’s translucent textile works, all 13 artists have made a bold statement about their love of our hinterland environment. Raquel Manson’s joyful glowing works of the imagination and Christine Elcoate’s humorous representation of one of our national pastimes complement Melanie Gray Augustin’s emotionally packed abstracts, while Cholena Hughes’ cyanotypes, created by exposure to sunlight, reflect the strength of the sun’s rays in Michele Retschlag’s masterly watercolours. For those of you who enjoyed Kevin Grealy’s and Annie McIntosh’s exhibitions, or who are still enjoying Jim Cox’s exhibition – there are more treats in store for you with new works by all of these artists on show. Unlike their other exhibitions, ‘A Little Piece of the Sun’ will be an ‘off the wall’ show – meaning that if a work sells it can be taken of the wall right then and it will be replaced with another work by that artist – by the time the exhibition closes we expect it to be completely different to the opening night show! ‘A Little Piece of the Sun’ will hang at Vianta Arts, 70 Simpson Street Beerwah, until January 31.

Are your sore neck and shoulders making life less enjoyable? Does sitting at the computer, driving, or even reading a book cause a burning discomfort in your shoulders that spreads up into the base of your skull? If so, you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation and poor posture – two common problems that chiropractic care is very effective in relieving. Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. This occurs when the spine loses normal motion and/or position, and can cause wear and tear on the discs, ligaments, muscles and other spinal tissues. Subluxation can also have an affect on the nerves exiting the spine – leading to even more issues of pain and poor health. Today’s lifestyle encourages us to fall into ‘forward head posture’ - where our head sits in front of our shoulders – rather than in line with the shoulders as it should. This forward posture has a significant impact on your health and your appearance and if left unaddressed, tends to get worse as you get older. Researchers agree that for every 2.5cm of forward head posture there is an equivalent increase of 4.5kg of stress on the neck. It’s no wonder poor posture is such a pain! Poor posture and Spinal Subluxation often result in back aches, neck pain, jaw pain, loss of lung capacity, gastrointestinal problems, pre-disposition to arm, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries and the list goes on. Fortunately, we can help! Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your discomfort. Beerwah – 5494 0499 www.adjusttolife.com.au

Networks to spend another $50bn on Australia’s ‘dumb-and-dumber’ grid (from RenewEconomy.com.au, 30 October 2015 by Giles Parkinson)

Australian electricity consumers face no relief from their soaring electricity bills, with energy regulators allowing the country’s electricity networks to spend another $50 billion on poles and wires in the next five years. This cost has and will be passed on to consumers –

reducing what was once Australia’s competitive advantage of cheap power. Over the past few months, the Australian Energy Regulator has approved spending, totalling $16.4 billion by NSW networks and $12.89 billion by Queensland networks. Free parking for shoppers in Caloundra CBD over Christmas

Shoppers will be able to take advantage of free parking in the Caloundra CBD during the Christmas-New Year period following Sunshine Coast Council’s support of a parking meter fee amnesty. At arecent Ordinary Meeting, council supported a request from the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and Industry for a parking meter fee amnesty in the Caloundra CBD area for six weeks starting Saturday, December 12. Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the parking meter fee amnesty would provide added convenience for shoppers at this busy time of year. “Caloundra shoppers won’t need to worry about finding coins or remembering to feed the parking meter while rushing about trying to get the Christmas shopping done,” Cr Dwyer said. “Caloundra CBD parking will be free, just as it is in other shopping destinations across the Coast. “We’re pleased to support the amnesty and encourage locals and visitors to explore the great range of shops Caloundra has to offer. “While the parking will be free, I ask motorists to be mindful that the twohour time limit will still apply in order to support customer turnover for local businesses in the area. “Over the six-week period, council officers will continue to monitor general parking regulation throughout the area, and any parking infringements will attract a penalty infringement notice.” During the amnesty period it is anticipated that council’s foregone revenue from the 71 parking meters in the Caloundra CBD will be between $57,000 and $62,000. Operating surplus from the meters is utilised for projects, facilities and other services for the Bulcock Street precinct. The paid parking amnesty will conclude at midnight on Tuesday, January 26.

Key to the city for Bindi Irwin When Bindi Irwin won Dancing with the Stars she knew it would open doors for her, and that has been made a little easier in her home town with Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson, presenting her with the key to the city last Friday. The Australia Zoo Wildlife Warrior won the hearts of people across the world during the 21st season of the United States dance competition. Mayor Mark Jamieson described the 17-year-old as ‘inspirational’ and congratulated her on her win. As well as the key to the city, Mayor Jamieson presented Bindi with a commemorative surfboard to join her Dancing with the Stars trophy in the ‘pool room’. The surfboard includes photos of her time on Dancing with the Stars and family memories with her late father Steve, mum Terri and brother Robert. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, whose division includes Australia Zoo, said Bindi’s not just won Dancing With The Stars, Bindi’s won our admiration. “Thousands of Coast residents watched Bindi’s progress in the US with great interest and we’re all very proud of her win" Mayor Jamieson said. Bindi has wasted no time getting back in her khaki and feeding Australia Zoo’s famous crocodiles," he said. Bindi said it really did feel like she'd just woken up from a crazy beautiful dream. “Even though LA was amazing, there’s no better feeling than stepping off the plane into the Australian summer and knowing you’re back where you belong,” she said.

New access to Old Gympie Road at Beerwah by John Jennings Residents in Lindeman Drive and Carnarvon Road, Beerwah, will soon save up to five kilometres on a round trip to the shops. The final extension later next year through the Coochin Twins Estate, off old Gympie Road, will open up what had been a dead-end for Carnarvon Road, off Lindeman Road. Residents could walk through A slash of red dirt at present but this will but not drive from their soon become a convenient link to Old properties. Gympie Road and beyond for estabAlthough the change has been lished residents in Lindeman Road and coming, some Carnarvon Road Carnarvon road, Beerwah residents have mixed feelings. (photo courtesy John Jennings) “Yes – we can cut down the time and distance needed to get out to Old Gympie Road but on the other hand this change is going to increase traffic along our section of Canarvon Road,” an established resident said. “We knew the change had been coming for some time,” she said. The relatively straight connecting road through the new Coochin Twins Estate and the overall design of the estate will prevent a ‘rat run’ through the new houses as dozens of motorists from the established area take advantage of the new access. According to the on-site agent, John King of First National Real Estate Beerwah, more than half the blocks in Coochin Twins development have been sold. The remaining stages will contain 60 house blocks, with some released now and the remainder through next year. Some 20 homes have already been built or are underway in the first sections, with a variety of local buyers, mostly owner occupiers, plus some investors. Already, pedestrians and cyclists, many of them students, have appreciated the picturesque concrete track from the estate direct through to Roberts Road.

At the Neighbourhood Watch Queensland Beerwah meeting on December 7, there were two ‘Good Neighbour’ awards to be presented; the Certificate for October was presented by the Area Co-ordinator, Ron Stocks, to Coralie Lillecrapp, and she was also the recipient of the ‘Good Neighbour of the Year’ award. Coralie was nominated by Mike Turner, who wrote ‘Coralie has been a longterm and excellent supporter of our local community. She is one of those people who dedicate a lot of time and energy to building community – and she has done it because she loves people and community! Coralie has been President of the Beerwah Primary P&C and is currently the President of the Beerwah High P&C. She was the main organiser of the very successful ‘Big Night Out’ event held each year at the Beerwah Primary School which attracted thousands of people. Coralie and her family are very involved in local sporting teams and clubs too. She has been a wonderful champion of the chaplaincy service of Beerwah High too. I find Coralie to be a very positive and encouraging person. Thanks Coralie for who you are and the way you care about others!’ Coralie receiving the October certificate with Ron Stocks and Mike Turner www.gcnews.com.au

Wall tells story of Eudlo

Eudlo residents have captured the story of their town – past and present – by creating a story wall for the whole community to enjoy. The Eudlo Story Wall was unveiled at a ceremony in the Sunshine Coast hinterland town following more than 12 months of work. A community project, led by Suncoast Clayworkers, the three metre long wall features a gallery of clay tiles, many of which were decorated by local residents and Eudlo State School students. The remaining tiles feature historical pictures of the area printed on specially made ceramic decals, preserving these images for generations to come. A memorial plaque from founding residents of Eudlo has also been included. A passionate supporter of the project, Division 5 councillor Jenny McKay said the wall was a symbolic tribute to both those who had gone before us and those growing up in the area now. “The students at Eudlo State School and community members who contributed to creating this wall should be really proud of the work they’ve done,” Cr McKay said. “Together, they have created a unique piece of art that will be enjoyed by the Eudlo community, visitors to the area and also future generations to come. “With images showing contemporary and historical stories of the town, residents and visitors will find something new and interesting to view each time they visit the wall.” Leading artist and Suncoast Clayworkers president Jackie Gasson was the driving force behind the development of the wall. “Creation of the Eudlo Story Wall has been a passion of mine for more than three years now,” Ms Gasson said.

Can we find a home for...

Eudlo School principal Janet Smith, lead artist Jackie Gasson, Cr Jenny McKay, and Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell “I wanted to create something that the Eudlo community could be proud of and visitors to the area would be able to identify with. “The pictures we have used truly capture the history of Eudlo, and the artworks created by the community show how the town is viewed today. “We have captured a ‘point in time’ for future generations to look back on and enjoy,” she said. The story wall is located near the community tennis courts in Rosebed Street. Development of the story wall was funded through council’s grants programs, as well as contributions from Suncoast Clayworkers and Welch Contracting. Jackie Gasson is a ceramic artist with 40 years’ experience and a tertiary art degree from the Australian National University. The Eudlo Story Wall will become a part of the Sunshine Coast public art collection.

Van is de-sexed, vaccinated, micro-chipped and comes with local council registration. Adoption fee is only $250.00. Glasshouse Country View Club report Contributed by Judith Mason We had a very informative talk on smoke alarms for our November meeting. Our guest speaker was Adrian Butler, a former fireman and co-founder and chairman of the World Fire Safety Foundation. Do you ‘photoelectric alarms’ which detect smoke? Or just ‘toaster’ alarms which detect burning toast but not smoldering smoke? This is why houses burn down even though homeowners have so called smoke alarms. On the day our newest member Chris Essex also received her badge. On Wednesday, December 2 we had our Caring for the Hinterland community for over 18 yrs

Christmas Party, and a very happy time was had by all. The ‘Sunshine Statesmen’ entertained us for an hour with their beautiful unaccompanied singing, and we joined in with Jingle Bells! We were then well and truly ready for our buffet lunch, during which we had raffles drawn. As usual Pauline did a great job putting them together from goods we donate. We wish everyone a very happy holiday season and look forward to our January outing on Wednesday, January 6, at the Lookout Café, Woodford Road, at 10.00am. It starts our year with Christmas/New Year catch up and everyone is welcome. Please contact Pauline on 5438 7589 if you would like to come. When the best is local When it comes to great quality workmanship and high calibre products there is no need to look elsewhere. Our local trades and services provide some of the best options available right here in the Hinterland, without having to go to the coast. In believing that ‘the best is local’ – Beerwah based Kevs Joinery and Shopfitters were approached by Lesley Wooler from Neddy’s Nosebag to totally renovate her entire shop. Along with Lesley’s own vision for the refit, she was happy to draw upon Kev and his teams’ extensive expertise to seek additional ideas. The final result is a testament to the skill and collaborative efforts by our local trades and services people. “I am just so pleased to see the finished version of the shop,” said Lesley. “Kev was great to work with from the very start, and now the store is just so inviting for both customers and staff.” The actual refit took a little over two weeks to complete and the feedback from everyone involved in the collaborative process has been overwhelmingly positive.

“We work with what the customer wants, and fit in with their timeframes,” said Kev. We utilise an exceptional standard of local subcontractor, so in this case credit is justly due to everyone involved.” Clinton from Clinton McArthur Plumbing said, “We were proud to be involved in the fit out of the new shop – it was a great working team!” Kerry from ATL Graphix remarked, “Working with Leslie to give her a new fresh image for her business was a most rewarding experience. This is always made easier when the customer has a picture of their requirements in mind for us to work with. We wish Leslie and her staff all the best with her new venture.” Adam from Berrells Electrical Services said, “It was fun! What a great team to work with.” Kev from Finn Gas was pleased to be able to fit in around the tight schedule. Sarah from Mingleford Refrigeration was happy to assist with a local business which they frequent often, and who are such a happy team. Lesley has also been thrilled with the work of Tim from All Tile, with many customers commenting on the floor work.

Lesley has had plenty of complementary comments from the customers since the renovation has been completed including … “more room, airy, heaps better, looks amazing.” Happily also for staff, the new renovation means a more accessible layout and better storage which makes workflow easier. Finally, Lesley would also like to thank her loyal and hardworking staff for their tireless effort throughout the process.

Colours of the bush

with Ann McGrath I know that there are those who think the bush is boring ... ‘It’s just bush and if you want true beauty then exotics are the way to go.’ May I suggest a drive through our dry eucalypt (sclerophyll) forests at the moment? I drove along Tunnel Ridge Road last week and up to Maleny and couldn’t help but notice the patches bright orange in the bush. Upon investigation, I discovered that they are the trunks of one of our local eucalypt trees - the Grey Gum. Other areas of Australia have Grey Gums as well but those in our area are the Eucalyptus propinqua. For most of the year the bark is a dark grey colour, but come summer, the bark begins to shed and large strips or patches of bright orange appear. The intensity of the orange has to do with growing conditions. The better the growing conditions, the more quickly the tree grows and the brighter the orange colour. The colour is faded by the sun so that those trees in the shade will retain their colour much longer than those exposed to direct sunlight and the north side of the tree will fade before the south side. Depending on the weather conditions the whole process of bark shedding can take 2 – 3 months. The Propinqua is a favoured Koala food tree so, not only is it an attractive tree, but a useful one as well. Next time you go for a drive check them out.

School News Mooloolah State School winds up 2015

Contributed by Michelle Lenz This week has been a very special week for Year 6 students heading off to high school and it has also meant saying goodbye to some of our families that have been with us since Prep. On Monday night a special celebration was held which was full of fun, beautiful food, entertainment, photos, remembrance and awards. There were guest speakers and a performance from the Year 6 students. On Wednesday, the Year 6 students participated in ‘Survivor Day’. This is a tough but fun day with the students getting into teams and supporting each other through various activities such as obstacle courses, bizarre eating challenges and races. It brings all the Year 6 students together for one last time in a united front. The staff of Mooloolah State School would like to thank all families and members of the community that have worked hard to support our school all year and we wish the Year 6 students the best of luck for the beginning of high school in 2016. We would also like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and safe New Year! Look forward to seeing you in 2016.

Fond farewell for Year 6s

With the school year coming to a close, Landsborough State School has bid farewell to its Year 6 students at a Graduation Ceremony held in the school hall. The celebrations enabled each student to say farewell to friends and teaching staff and leave Landsborough State School with a sense of pride and personal achievement. The school acknowledged the accomplishments of each student and thanked them for their many and valued contributions. Various awards were announced for categories such as Citizenship, Sports, Arts and Academic. Bursary and encouragement awards were also presented. The school captains delivered speeches reflecting on their primary school years and thanked their teachers and everyone who had supported the students during their time at the school.

Year 6 students were 'clapped out' of the school hall following their Graduation Ceremony Guest speakers conveyed messages of support to the graduates as they embrace the exciting challenges of high school. The Graduation Ceremony culminated with all students, teachers and parents 'clapping out' the Year 6's. It was a symbolic way to signify the end of their primary school days and the beginning of another exciting chapter in their educational journey. Once the formalities were out the way, Year 6 students enjoyed a celebratory lunch followed by an afternoon relaxing at the beach.

Beerburrum to be a cool school Students at Beerburrum State School are very keen to return in 2016, thanks to the generous donation of $16,000 from the P&C. Staff and students alike are very excited to know that the Library and resource centre will be air conditioned early in 2016. This will provide students with a cool place to learn during the summer months as well as a comfortable place in which school functions can be held. Principal Shirley Francis is impressed by the P&C’s dedication to fundraising and is overwhelmed by their generosity. Staff are looking forward to the use of the resource centre being of greater benefit to the students.

I give a moo for mooloolah Mooloolah ChristmasGive Partyit a go and keep the

By Sonia Clark On Friday, December 4, The Mooloolah Community Centre celebrated their annual Community Christmas party and barbecue. Around 300 local residents got together to enjoy the festivities which ran from 5.00pm-8.00pm and a fantastic time was had by all. Coordinated by the Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA), the Christmas Party was supported by Sunshine Coast Council,

Mooloolah Lions and a number of local businesses who offered their support to ensure a great community event. One of the highlights of the evening was the arrival of Santa in a motorbike side car ably supported by his ‘elf’. The evening featured a barbecue put on by the Mooloolah Lions club, jumping castle and a visit by the Mooloolah Fire Service’s Fire Truck. Eight different ‘DJ’s’ played throughout the evening and kept the party rocking. Anita Verwayen from MVCA was extremely pleased with the local turnout and the overwhelmingly positive response to the event. “We really want to thank all the volunteers who helped out, Sunshine Coast Council for their Festive Season grant and all the businesses that donated prizes for the raffle and provided sponsorship,” she said. Another highlight of the evening was the bumper raffle draw with first prize, a wheelbarrow filled with goodies valued at $500.00 won by Mooloolah local, Renée Walters. Second prize winner, a vintage quilt, was Lauren Baker and third prize, a day/night pass to the Woodford Folk Festival was won by William Gassner. The Mooloolah Community Centre will close on Tuesday, December 22 and reopen Monday, January 11.

Mooloolah Masonic Lodge celebrated its 90th year in August and although it has met at the Freemasons Centre in Caloundra for over a decade, it maintains close connections to the district by providing annual bursaries to Mooloolah State School senior students. At the school awards night on Monday, December 7, Ella Cormack and Darcy Parry received acknowledgement for being the ‘Most Promising and Improved Students’ in Year 6. In his speech, the new Master of the Lodge, Derek Jacques, wished them well for their further education and careers. Mr Jacques also presented the principal Brett Dowdell with a $200.00 cheque to purchase electronic equipment for use by the students. The Lodge is still going strong, according to the secretary Doug Wells. “It made donations to various charities, organisations and individuals totalling almost $10,000 this year,” he said.

Cyclists harassed

On Tuesday my friend and I were cycling down Peachester Hill when two motorists behind us kept tooting their horns. However, not only were we were in single file and keeping to the far left of the road, but we were actually keeping to the speed limit of 60kph! Finally we gave up, stopped where it was safe to do so and let them pass. Queensland road rules state that drivers must not use a car horn unless warning other road users of a danger as the noise can be a distraction and cause an accident. It is especially unnerving for cyclists, who have a right to be on the road and to be treated with courtesy and care. This is not the first time I have been harassed on my bike – as well as motorists tooting needlessly, I have been shouted at, sworn at, slapped from behind by some guys on a quad bike, and been brushed by buses and trucks coming too close. We have seen a huge attitudinal change since the new road rules for motorists passing cyclists, but there are still the few who would like to see us banished. There was even the absurd suggestion in these pages from someone from Peachester who wanted cyclists to refrain from talking to each other whilst cycling. For those who harass or bully cyclists, you may need to watch out for those flashing rear red lights many of us now attach to our seat posts. They have cameras embedded inside and police encourage us to use them. Damn shame I forgot to strap mine on last Tuesday. Mary Garden Beerwah

Dubious call

I just wanted to report a dubious call I received yesterday on my home phone. The person speaking had a thick Pakistani accent and said he was from the Crime Investigation Unit and that he was investigating a reported accident I had within a two year period. I said, "where are you calling from"? He said, "Sydney." I said, "I don't believe you," and I hung up. I reported this call to police and they said that if they were from the Crime Investigation Unit, the call would be from the Sunshine Coast as I live in Glass House Mountains. I thought that the general public should be aware of this. Belinda Chaseling Glass House Mountains

Vegetation clearing underway

Blackall Range residents will be seeing a number of vegetation clearing projects occurring. Firstly, the Blackall Range Lions are removing woody weeds and cleaning up the entrance to Maleny as part of an Environmental Grant they received from the Queensland Government. This is a work in progress and whilst initially confronting, the end result will include bank stabilisation, native plantings and hopefully a new bike and foot path - all a gain for Maleny and the environment. Secondly, Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have been busy doing their annual hazard reduction clearing - cleaning up site lines around corners, trimming overhanging branches and pruning back vegetation encroaching on our roads. You will see

evidence of this on Maleny-Stanley River Road and Maleny-Montville Road in particular. And thirdly, TMR have employed contractors to restore the ‘lookout’ at Balmoral Park on MalenyMontville Road - a real positive in time for visiting tourists. Thanks for your patience around each of these activities. Merry Christmas! Andrew Powell, Member for Glass House

As children, it was the fear of the monster under the bed that kept us awake at night. For the one in five Australians that will experience a mental illness this year, it’s an entirely different beast that invades the mind and can leave exhaustion, fear and anxiety in its wake. Exercise Right - an initiative of Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) - has been launched to raise awareness of the importance of regular physical activity in maintaining good mental health and preventing and managing mental health conditions. Industry Development Officer, Alex Lawrence said Mental illness can at times appear largely intangible, so for people who have not experienced any of these conditions, it can sometimes be difficult to understand what they may be going through. “The How to Train your Mental Health Monsters campaign provides a glimpse into how these conditions may look, feel, and act and highlights techniques for helping to manage these conditions through evidence-based exercise tips” he said. Mr Lawrence said over the past few decades, a range of studies have demonstrated that regular physical activity is associated with better mental health and emotional wellbeing. “For conditions like anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms and improve the mood of patients, which is why primary care providers are beginning to look to accredited exercise physiologists as an essential component of patient care.” Mr Lawrence said exercise did not necessarily need to be strenuous to provide a benefit, with something as simple as a brisk walk each day, able to make a difference. “One study showed a significant reduction in depression in as little as four weeks when patients participated in yoga on a regular basis, so it’s evident a little physical activity can go a long way in improving the mental health of Australians.” “For optimal results, it is worthwhile having an exercise intervention custom-designed by an accredited exercise physiologist to suit your individual needs.” To view the Mental Health Monster profiles, access exercise tips for training your Mental Health Monsters, and locate an accredited exercise physiologist in your area, please visit www. exerciseright.com.au/mental-health-monsters. If you think you may be experiencing a mental illness, organisations like Lifeline (13 11 14) or beyondblue (1300 224 636) can be contacted for support. www.gcnews.com.au

Living Bankfoot House update

On his 80th birthday, on June 8, 1981, Jack Ferris with his son Bill placed a memorial beside Old Gympie Road. The memorial plaque, located 300 mtrs south of Bankfoot House reads: ‘Erected to honour William and Mary Grigor of Bankfoot House who were the first settlers in this district and whose children – David who passed away on 7/4/1874, Margaret on 22/9/1878, and Robert on 21/10/1879, lie buried here together with an Aboriginal playmate – name unknown. Erected by their granddaughter Mary Ferris.’ Infant deaths were not uncommon in the late 1800s but William and Mary must have found it tough burying three children in five years. Twelvemonth-old David died of diphtheria, and it is believed that Margaret, aged two months, died of hives or an allergy. A snakebite sent four-year-old Robert to his grave. It is known that Aboriginals lived on the banks of Coonowrin Creek adjacent to Bankfoot House, and perhaps the Aboriginal playmate belonged to this tribe. A question exercising the minds of the Friends of Bankfoot House is whether there was another child’s death. Did David have a twin brother who died at birth or was stillborn?

No formal record exits but a faint but discernible word – ‘twin’ – is written in the Grigor family Bible beside the record of David’s birth. Also, David is listed as the sixth son, but he had only four living brothers, not five. Even more compelling, as evidence of the existence of a twin, is information on the Death Certificate of Mary Grigor which states that at her death she had six living children (John, Janet, William Andrew, James, Kenneth and Clementina) and ‘Deceased: 3 males, 1 female’. Can we assume the three deceased males were David, his twin brother, and Robert? The question remains unanswered. Some might ask, ‘Does this matter?’ but to the Friends of Bankfoot House everything is interesting – especially a mystery.

Interested in learning more about Bankfoot House? Contact the Friends of Bankfoot House on 5493 0197 on a Wednesday or email friends@bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder, President – 0407 760 989, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council.

Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley I would like to mention one of our dedicated Volunteer Ambassadors this month. Leonie Sanderson was our 'Saturday morning girl', and had been for some time. She loved working and was proud to wear her shirt and badge, and to be able to assist visitors to the area with her vast local knowledge. Leonie was a regular at our morning teas, and a great asset to the team at Glass House Interpretive and Information Centre. Leonie sadly passed away on November 25, and she will be greatly missed by the team. We recently had a visit from Maleny Botanical Gardens with two of their wonderful birds. The gardens have grown so much in the last two years and if you have not been recently, I recommend a visit. We also had a fantastic presentation in the centre last week, with National Parks and Wildlife coming in to tell us about the wildflower book and the research that was done to complete it. There was also a handy update about camping in our National Parks. If you would like to be updated on the National Parks information, call in to see us. If anyone is interested in becoming a Volunteer Ambassador, please contact bev.dooley@visitsunshinecoast. com or call 0417 709 157. The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information centre is located at Settler's Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains and is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 4.00pm

There is handcrafted jewellery, fair trade products, Lyn’s miniature felt people and animals, Merrins Wacky Tea cosies, metal art, Collectables of different types, plants and many other items to choose from. Santa will be making an appearance at 10.30am then at 11.00am Tapestry will entertain with Christmas Carols. At 12.00noon the Joy of Singing Choir will be doing songs of joy. While you’re there, try some of the food on offer, there is Jesse’s Malaysian street food and Linda’s Gluten free vegetarian offerings. Wash it all down with a Fair Trade Organic Coffee. Jimmy’s fruit and veg is a great place to stock up on stone fruit, mangos and watermelon for Christmas day. Or have an Emmett Treatment or get a gift voucher for a special new year detox massage for your loved one. What could be a better morning out? The Stallholders of Maleny Sunday Markets would like to thank our regular customers for their patronage through the year, and to all a happy and safe Christmas.

The Blackall Range Farmer’s market will be holding their last market of the year on Saturday, December 19 from 7.00 am – 12.00noon at the grounds of the Old Witta School (just five minutes from Maleny) at 316 Witta Road, Witta. There will indeed be something for everyone including gluten-free Christmas cakes, native cut flowers (made to last!), jars of jam, chutneys, pickles and sauces (made from local ingredients), vinegars and a great variety of potted herbs and flowers including orchids and geraniums that all make great gifts.

In the Garden

Peachester Horticultural Society

Contributed by Patricia Bradford, Publicity Officer The final meeting for the year was held in the garden of Trish and Gary Bradford. Coral welcomed all present and asked for a moment of reflection on the sad loss of life in the Paris atrocities and for members who have loved ones on the sick list. A few members visited the International Garden Expo held at Strathpine recently. It was well laid out in a beautiful setting with lovely landscaped gardens, as well as all the stalls. It was agreed that prices for most plants was a bit high. Pam and John Innes visited WA recently to see the wildflower display. The best display of wildflowers was growing in Kings Park in Perth. Wildflowers for the market are grown commercially on a farm north of Perth. They also visited Cooper Pedy on the way home. Vicki Blake spoke about a few of their experiences of a walking tour through Croatia and Slovenia, a beautiful country, and Italy. Trish and Gary Bradford toured some of the south Islands of New Zealand recently, it’s a beautiful country. They had a few wet days, it was cold and windy in the alpine area, but dry on the eastern side. Lots of rebuilding going on in Christchurch and earthquake damage is still to be seen. Nessie Pratten mentioned that while in hospital in Brisbane, not one of the staff knew of the Glass House Mountains. Angus Joyce (pictured) showed off a small blue flowered plant called ‘Blue Eyes’ which matched his eyes, it closes at night. Results of the competition bench for October, 1st - Cath Howitt 20 points, 2nd Gordon Howitt 16 points. After the meeting, Gary fired up the barbecue and we all enjoyed a barbecue lunch. Seasons Greetings to all and we will meet again on Thursday, January 21. At 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. Visitors are always welcome. For more information phone 5496 9169.

Weed file Silverleaf Desmodium

Desmodium uncinatum This scrambler is also known as ‘velcro weed’ because of its annoying tendency to stick to your clothes, hair and pets. This is because it is covered with tiny hairs with a hooked end. It is madly seeding now, so if you have it at your place, you’ll definitely know about it. It is an introduced legume plant from South America, which is used as a pasture fodder plant for cattle. Unfortunately, it also grows just as well outside a paddock, and can become a pest plant along roadsides, in gardens and on acreage land. It is distinguished from its cousin, Greenleaf Desmodium, by having a sliver splash of colour on the leaf – so hence the name. Being a legume, it has a good taproot, so hand removal means removing as much of the root as possible. It can be sprayed with an appropriate broadleaf weed killer, such as Kamba-M. Or buy a cow. Make sure you take all the seeds off your clothes and put them in a bag and in the bin; otherwise you’ll just spread it around your block even more.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery

Plant of the Week

White Oak Grevillea

Grevillea baileyana This beautiful Grevillea can be seen in full flower all around the Sunshine Coast at the moment. The creamy white flowers are in great profusion and attract many nectar feeding birds. As this tree matures the underside of the leaf also develops a gorgeous satin coppery sheen that is displayed when the leaves get blown on the breeze. The White Oak Grevillea is endemic to North Queensland, from Tully to the Olive River on Cape York Peninsula. Here on the Sunshine Coast it grows into a medium-sized tree between 8m and 10m in height. This is a very hardy tree that is equally at home in a suburban backyard or on acreage. It is both drought and frost tolerant. Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview is open Monday to Saturday 9.00am until 4.00pm. . This gorgeous Queenslander is hidden away at the end of the tree lined driveway. Nestled on a picturesque 8.6 acres, and surrounded by beautiful established grounds, this craftsman built home offers space for all the family. There are 2 living areas, a unique, character filled rumpus room, a spacious country style kitchen, tropical atrium garden, and wide verandahs that add to the relaxed atmosphere of this special property. Cleared paddocks for grazing and access to riding trails around the Ewen Maddock dam make the property suitable for horses if one desires. Separate from the house, there is over 150m2 of garaging to accommodate all the toys, and even a vehicle ramp to fix them. The rural residential zoning and town water also means this property is potentially subdividable, plus being only 2kms to Moololah’s township and rail link to Brisbane, yet only 15kms to Golden Beach, the position is perfect.

This immaculately presented home was built by the current owners in 1993. It has been lovingly maintained ever since. The elevated home site provides a commanding view of the park like grounds. The large lot of 6112m2 (1 ½ acres) is fully fenced, well drained and North facing. The green fingered owners have created a garden that is both attractive and functional with a huge range of fruit trees and thriving vegetable gardens, all watered from the massive 146,000 litres of stored water. The spotless home consists of 4 large bedrooms, ensuite to main, large country laundry, a charming open plan living area, and there is an amazing amount of storage cupboards. Reverse cycle air conditioning, a lovely wood-burner, insulation and ceiling fans provide climate control. A double garage is complimented by a 9m x 7m shed + a 7m x 7m shed providing accommodation for 6 vehicles. This well-appointed property is located 10kms from the Beerwah Town Centre and 30 minutes to Caloundra’s sandy beaches. An inspection will impress the most fastidious of buyers.

Staying sane in the 'Silly Season'

As parents of two young children, Christmas is a mixed bag of feelings. On one hand it's the excitement of the holiday season; our children are home from school, the whole house is decorated with lights and baubles, delicious stone fruit is in season and the beaches are a new shade of gold. On the other hand, it’s the season for dreading crowded shopping centres, constant traffic jams, trying to fit both sides of the family into one day and the unavoidable price hikes – I swear a week ago that Elsa doll was half the price it is now! With all this, the good and the bad, shoved into just a few short weeks, how are we supposed to stay sane in the silliest season of all? The answer is – Keep it Simple! Just like anything we do, the more we complicate things, the harder it becomes.

GLASSHOUSE COMMUNITY CHURCH

Contact 5439 9341 or 5496 9671

It’s kind of one of those things that is difficult to grasp. We want everything to be perfection for our families, so we add more baubles to the tree, extra lights outside, three additional dishes to the Christmas Lunch menu and what are we left with? No time to enjoy the things that are really important at this time of year. I don’t need more dazzle on my tree or more presents under it – family, friends and the memories we make are what we want more of. It reminds us of the best gift the world has received. A child lying in a manger. No mansion, no parades, no dazzling lights or lavish feasts were there to welcome him. This simple scene of a stable and a boy swaddled in rags, given from the heart of God became the greatest gift of all. It is the simple things in life that ultimately bring us the most pleasure.

Sport Sport 2015 a great year for local Strongman Beerburrum powerlifter Tim O’Shea, 37, had a successful final competition of the year, with gold medals in both the 140kg division and overall equipped division of the GPC National Powerlifting Push-Pull Competition in Brisbane recently. To achieve this, Tim successfully benched pressed 230kg and dead-lifted 302.5kg. This rounds off a great year for Tim, with a silver medal at the powerlifting Nationals in July, podium finishes in every round of the Queensland Strongman Series (and second place overall) and sixth place at the East Coast Highland Games Championships being highlights. With a few months of strengthsports off-season ahead, Tim will not be resting; in fact he is hitting the trails and the pool with the goal of completing his first triathlon in February, 2016.

Glasshouse Athletes get Gold

The battle for pool supremacy was fought between the two sports houses of Peachester Primary last Tuesday, Coochin vs. Stanley. The calibre of speed and style by both teams was plainly evident, many of the children participate in squad training, and the strict competition was fierce. Fifty metre and 25metre races in all four strokes were swum and some fun activities held for the more junior swimmers; everyone was encouraged to have a go. The day was wrapped up with year and mixed aged relays and even parents vs. senior. Stanley was triumphant in the end collecting 306 points with Coochin coming second with 201, the teams celebrated with resounding versions of their house war cries, Stanley's was just that little more jubilant! Huge thanks to Brendan and his team at Beerwah District Pool for the two weeks of excellent school swim lessons prior, coaching the children on the day regarding competition standards, running the day and encouraging all to do their best, while still having fun.

The Glasshouse District Little Athletics Under 14 Medley Relay team has taken out the gold medal at the Queensland State Relay Championships. The team qualified in November when they won the Suncoast Regional Relays. Made up of three boys (Luca Ferroussat, Quentin Bissinger and Joshua McMullin) and one girl (Chelsea Negus) they faced 17 other teams from all over Queensland to win the title. Chelsea said she "felt a little intimidated being the only girl in the race" but that certainly didn’t hold them back. Talented 800m runner Luca clinched the Gold medal for the team in the last metres in what was an amazing race. In all, 26 athletes from Glasshouse District Little Athletics qualified for the Queensland State Relay championship and all of them put in a great effort. This included a fantastic performance from Laura Vobr and Rhiarn Tranter who got a bronze medal in the Under 13 Girls Discus and Tamara Taripo and her partner Amy Trevan who also got a bronze medal in the U11 Girls Discus. The athletes will have a break over Christmas now and be looking for some more great results in the New Year.

In last week’s issue of GC&M News we ran a story about Beerwah High Student Amalee Mcclellan who was selected to represent Australia in the under 16 girls division at the World Cup for Oz Tag. The World Cup was held at Sunshine Coast Stadium at Kawana over four days from December 3 through to December 6. Amalee was selected along with three other Queensland girls - and in fantastic news the girls came away undefeated throughout the whole tournament! The team played against a number of teams including New Zealand, Niue and Cook Islands to take out the Grand Final award. Achieving a win in the grand final – the girls are now ‘World Champions 2015’ which is an incredible result for the team. The tournament results for the team were as follows: v New Zealand 9-6, v Niue 17-2, v Cook Islands 31-1,v Australian Barbarians 5-4, v Australia Indigenous 11-0, v Cook Islands 17-0. Semi-final results v Australia Indigenous 8-1 and Grand Final score v New Zealand 6-3. Total For -104 Total Against -16.

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

Santa’s naughty list Sarah and her 13-year-old sister had been fighting a lot this year. This happens when you combine a headstrong two-year-old, who is sure she is always right, with a young adolescent. Sarah's parents, trying to take advantage of her newfound interest in Santa Claus, reminded the two-year-old that Santa was watching and didn’t like it when children fight. This had little impact. "I'll just have to tell Santa about your misbehaviour,” the mother said as she picked up the phone and dialled. Sarah's eyes grew big as her mother asked Mrs Claus (who was really Sarah's aunt; Santa's real line was busy) if she could put Santa on the line. Sarah's mouth dropped open as mum described to Santa (Sarah's

uncle) how the two-year-old was acting. But, when mum said that Santa wanted to talk to her, she reluctantly took the phone. Santa explained to her how there would be no presents Christmas morning to children who fought with their sisters. He would be watching, and he expected things to be better from now on. Sarah solemnly nodded to each of Santa's remarks and silently hung the phone up when he was done. After a long moment, mum asked, "what did Santa say to you, dear?" In almost a whisper, Sarah sadly but matter-offactly stated, "Santa said he won't be bringing toys to my sister this year." Submitted by Rick, Glass House

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com Week beginning 16/12/2015 SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 There is the lure of playful associations amid holiday festivities because Mars is going through Libra in your friendship zone. You can expect lots of social activities and invitations. Some of you have too much partying which could cause bad digestive problems, so be careful. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 You have got a fierce conviction in what you say this week and you might find you are coming across to others in a dominating way. That unfortunately can bring troublesome reactions that stir further trouble. Pull back a little and aim for self-control to avoid conflict. AQUARIUS January20 - February 19 With Mars, Pluto, Mercury and Uranus all under stress this can mean a volatile or exciting breakthrough period for you. This is because your ruler Uranus is involved, so astonishing or unexpected developments can sent you on an unanticipated adventure now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 You have the warm intense embrace of Venus transiting sultry Scorpio, heating up contact with far away people and places. In fact this brings ease and news of further travel. A favourable week ahead for promotional activities, bringing good press for your accomplishments.

LEO July 23 - August 22 Take no short cuts this week in your dealings with others and make sure that everything you do is correct and verifiable. This is the week to get going with any financial arrangements involving the approval, expertise or cooperation of other people. Revise travel plans. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 An intense close encounter comes from seductive Venus, moving through the sign of Scorpio, heating up your local liaisons and positive social occasions. This could find you engaging in community activities and alliances close to home. Make no unstable decisions. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 What is hidden comes to light now under the unusual aspect of Saturn with Neptune. It comes like a sudden bolt of lightning with Uranus in your opposite sign. An unexpected expense could throw you for a loop which may be household repairs, or a search into family problems. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 This week charges you into a period of upbeat activities, either at home or with loved ones. All that leads to fun activities that bring you out of your shell. What seemed to be so intensely secret and special may come under more erratic unstable trends by the weekend.

ARIES March 21 - April 20 Expansion is your theme at work, and this could mean a chance to learn something new, broaden your horizons or add to your experiences. Uranus and Saturn both in fire signs add to your encounters with new people, and that bodes well for having fun! Look to promote beneficial alliances. TAURUS April 21 - May 21 Mercury gets together with Pluto, but then has a battle on its hands against Uranus. This makes for a volatile period and we would make the suggestion to pull back from the fray, before you really need to be carted off to hospital! However you can use Mars to exercise away frustrations. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 You will find that this week your work, health and financial arrangements are a snap to manage, providing you can tune out many intrusive distractions. There is some advice given to you that seems compelling and this could lead to a career uptrend. Give it full attention. CANCER June 22 - July 22 This is a volatile week for you in the important corners of your life such as home, career, and relationships all being caught in this complex stress of energy. This time calls for restraint amidst provocation. There is enthusiasm from a loved one to tackle a task or new adventure.
