MARCH 16 2016
Hi Everyone
W
ell as I drove to work this morning passing election signage, I thought about someone I met over the weekend, who said, "I don’t have any idea who is running for Mayor where I live." Which got me thinking with the election now just days away – surely none of our regular readers of GC&M News could say they had no idea of who the candidates were?! Even if they haven’t read every word that we have printed on our Election pages over the last five weeks, surely they would have noticed that there is an election campaign going on and maybe noticed the photos? Or maybe with elections, it is sometimes a case of you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink. I have to say that I am a bit biased, but I think Brownie has done a great job co-ordinating all of the election related info together, and in case you can’t remember everything that has been written – you can always go back over the on-line editions at our website www.gcnews.com.au Regards,

For many years', Years 1 and 2 in particular, were housed in demountable classrooms. Even though the classrooms were spacious and air conditioned, they didn’t compare to the beautiful state-of-the-art rooms the students now enjoy. Each room has concertina glass doors which enable the whole classroom to spill out into an expansive undercover outdoor learning area (OLA). The classroom and the OLA have been designed to facilitate the most flexible learning space possible so teachers do not have to limit their imaginations in the way they teach their students.

Top IGA in Queensland! By Sonia Clark The winning streak for Super IGA Beerwah continues with news last Tuesday that they had picked up the top gong at the associations’ state award conference held in Tokyo, Japan. As well as receiving the overall award for ‘The Best IGA in Queensland’, Beerwah IGA also won ‘Best Grocery, Best Dairy/Chilled Foods and Best Bakery in Queensland’. Manager Rose Moana was understandably delighted with winning this awesome recognition, and appreciative of all the hard work and tireless effort that staff had put in. Winning top store in Queensland was all the more remarkable given that the store at Beerwah has only been open at their present site for a year and a half. “I’m extremely proud of what we have achieved in a relatively short time. We are just ordinary people who come to work each day and work hard to achieve the best we can. We are very proud of what we do and this is a huge achievement, not only for us, but also for Beerwah,” said Rose. Rose acknowledges that it was great to be singled out as winners from such a high level of competition. Now after winning the state awards, from here the store has the opportunity to attend the national conference in June where they might just achieve Best IGA in Australia! “With this incredible recognition of ‘Best IGA in Queensland’, the staff and I want to continue to uphold these high standards. We are so excited for the next stage, though at the end of the day it really is all about our customers, and our ultimate satisfaction is seeing our customers happy,” said Rose.

Is your water tasting a little different?
The Sunshine Coast’s drinking water supply is being supplemented from Brisbane to allow for a major upgrade of one of the region’s key water treatment plants. Seqwater has reversed the flow of water in stage 1 of the Northern Pipeline Interconnector (NPI) to supply the Sunshine Coast with water sourced from North Pine Dam, near Petrie. The reversal will ensure supply to the Sunshine Coast while the Landers Shute Water Treatment Plant, near Montville, undergoes an upgrade to improve the long term reliability of this critical component of South East Queensland’s Water Grid. Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Peter Dennis said reversing the NPI to supplement the Sunshine Coast supply from outside the region demonstrated the benefit of the water grid. “Our water grid allows us to move water around South East Queensland to where it’s most needed,” Mr Dennis said. “Changing the flow direction of bulk water supply pipelines is part of normal operations at Seqwater to best manage water supply levels and keep the grid operating efficiently. “Some water will still be sourced from Baroon Pocket Dam to the Landers Shute Water Treatment Plant to maintain supply to Sunshine Coast, but at a reduced amount to allow us to work at the water treatment plant.” Mr Dennis said the NPI can transport up to 65 megalitres of treated potable water a day from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast or in the other way. “People may notice a slight change in their drinking water as different water sources have their own characteristics. “Regardless of the source, our water continues to meet the strict health requirements of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines 2011.” For more information about Seqwater and its services, visit www. seqwater.com.au. www.gcnews.com.au

Diamond Anniversary By Lea Parkes
Keith and Val Bradford of Beerwah celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary with a luncheon at the Beerwah Hotel, on Saturday, with 70 of their family and friends attending. The couple married on March 10 at the Gympie Church of England, in 1956 when Val was only 17. They had started going out when Val was 15 and they were engaged after a year. However Val had caught Keith’s eye at a Ball when she was only 13, and her older sister had gone to the ball with one of Keith’s mates, so it would seem this is a case of young love lasting the test of time. Val explained that the key to a happy life together was that when things weren’t going well, you had to be able to talk them through. They started out their married life in Curra, and

moved to Beerwah from Woondum in 1972, for Keith to take on a job managing a pineapple farm on Peachester Road. Then in 1986 they moved into town. They had three children, two daughters, one who has passed away, and one son, and have four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Nearly all of the family came together to celebrate this special occasion including their granddaughter who was married recently and lives in Singapore. Val has a nephew who came down from Tully in North Queensland. Special highlights of the day were Val’s bridesmaid who travelled from Gladstone to be part of the celebration, and that the State Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle was the MC on the day.

Financial literacy program Last week Maleny Credit Union’s CEO Bob Malcolm and Nicole Hamilton visited students at Beerwah State High School to introduce them to the credit union’s financial literacy program. Beerwah is the third local school to take up the offer of introducing the program with their Year 12 students. Nicole explained to the students how the work book came about. She said that seeing young people coming into the credit union to refinance multiple personal debt, and basically having nothing to show for it, was one of the motivators to putting the book together. “I said they might look good in their new clothes they bought on credit but clothes soon wear out and fashion changes and if they’ve paid for it on credit, they might be paying for those clothes for years to come,” Nicole said. “It was also because of my own personal experience that I thought it important that we teach young people about financial literacy so they take responsibility for their own financial decisions. “My parents taught me to love, to respect others, be kind and be the best person I can. “But they didn’t teach me about financial literacy, which is not their fault, they obviously didn’t have the skills to teach me. “Because I didn’t have those lessons I got into trouble financially at a young age which had consequences, and I want other young people to benefit from my mistakes. “As a society we can’t rely on parents to teach financial literacy to their kids, it needs to come

Young author finds her purpose By Sonia Clark Josie Cluney is a young local writer who has recently moved to Maleny after spending 15 years living in Landsborough. She completed her first novel while still at school and hopes to make an impact or inspire change in peoples live through her writing. Young author Josie Cluney Still a teenager, she has already self published two non-fiction books and two fiction books which she writes under her pen name - Emily Fox. Josie publishes her work as kindle books through Amazon and has beta-readers and an editor go over her work before publishing. Josie has always loved to read and her interest started as a child. She’d write small stories about animals. Later, inspiration for her stories often developed from a single idea, generally brought on whilst watching a movie, reading or even from a dream. Recently she has decided to follow her dreams and aspirations and pursue writing as a career. Her latest book is a motivational work titled ‘Finding Purpose’ which she truly hopes will inspire others. Overcoming her own personal struggles in life, including depression and anxiety, Josie wrote the book to help others who may be feeling lost and without purpose. Through her own research, Josie came across valuable knowledge and wisdom and the book shares awareness that people can lift their spirits and find meaning and happiness again, by acknowledging what’s truly important, and what matters most in life. Inspired and supported by her partner Sam, Josie’s new book seeks to sum up her beliefs and outlook on life. It encourages people to define what is really important to them and to do what they love and enjoy. The online reception has been extremely positive with numerous readers awarding the book five star reviews. To find out more about Josie’s work see www.josiecluney.com.

Vale George Winter
It is with great sadness that the Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA Inc.) Management Committee reports the passing of our valued ex committee member and long-time supporter of the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre. George had bravely fought illness for the past couple of years and lost the battle on the evening of Tuesday, February 29. George was an enthusiastic community member, who will be remembered for his quick wit and wisdom. He was a great supporter of the Community Centre and freely gave his time and expertise to help make the Centre what it is today. Over 100 people (family, neighbours and friends) attended a memorial gathering at Mooloolah hall at 10.00am last Friday.

With ANZAC Day only just over a month away, the Beerwah & District RSL Sub-branch would like to make sure that the local community know that all is on track for this year’s commemorations. Work is moving ahead on their new Cenotaph in Turner Park (behind the Beerwah Library and Community Hall) and will be completed in the coming weeks. The Sub-branch are also hard at work organising their two services, as well as a revised route for the march. Once details have been finalised GC&M News will publish them. Every day is Neighbour Day Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, bringing together the people next door, across the street or on the next farm for a chat, a barbie or just a cuppa. Held on the last Sunday in March every year, it’s the perfect day to say thanks for being a great neighbour and for being there when I needed you most. This year Neighbour Day falls on Easter Sunday. So whether you decide to celebrate with family and neighbours and link with Easter festivities; or choose another date that suits you and your neighbours better; remember every day can be Neighbour Day. Hinterland Community Development Worker, Natasha Odgers, said neighbours are important because good relationships with others can and does change communities.

“Social connection makes us feel better as it helps prevent loneliness, isolation and depression, she said. “When you connect with the people who live nearby, you’re showing you care about what happens locally and are directly supporting safe, friendly and resilient streets and towns. Whether it’s a cuppa with a few people or a barbecue for the block, your Neighbour Day can be as big or small as you’d like. You can organise an event on your own or work with a group of neighbours on an event for your street or suburb. Decide whatever is manageable for you. Neighbourhood event ideas include: a BYO everything street gathering; a game of cricket in the local park; a barby at the end of the cul-desac; a party on the front lawn; afternoon tea in the back paddock; or a picnic – just to name a few. You could also keep it small and make a pledge to yourself to introduce yourself to a new neighbour or have a yarn to someone you haven’t spoken to before in your street – as your personal Neighbour Day activity. You can never have too many friends around you! Everything you need to help facilitate your Neighbour Day event is now available on the neighbourday.org website. Everyone is encouraged to contact Neighbour Day via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram to share their neighbourhood stories and exciting plans. Environment Dirty work done
Contributed by Rose, a Clean Up Australia volunteer It's that time of year again, to put on your gloves and sunscreen and walk the streets and parks, when all good folk come together to ‘Clean Up Australia. Our Beerwah group that does Bells Creek Road and Roys Road did a fantastic job again. Everybody pitched in and we filled our large bin and some. To all you volunteers that gave up your time and put in the effort – a huge thank you. We also have to thank our sponsors, who supported us again this year, namely: McDonalds Glass House who supplied cheeseburgers, IGA Beerwah supplied liquid refreshments, ACW Sunshine Coast also supplied liquid refreshments and lollies for the young ones that helped (and a few oldies), and last but not least Daleys Turf supplied the use of their vehicles for collecting all the rubbish. The sponsors, being so generous made our job much more enjoyable and rewarding, thank you very much, to all you sponsors named, our group really appreciate your support and we look forward to your continued support next year. A little thank you note to the public, our collection of rubbish was down on last year, and I hope that means that maybe people think twice about dumping rubbish! Job well done!

Students take pride in cleaning up On Friday, March 4, Landsborough State School students were out in force doing their bit to ensure their school and town were litter free. Armed with gloves and garbage bags they took to the outdoors to tidy the neighbourhood as part of the annual Clean Up Australia Day campaign. Students demonstrated responsibility and respect for their environment and did a fantastic job. Head of Curriculum, Amanda Shone, explained how the day delivered benefits for the students and the wider community. "The day teaches students the need to be conscious of the environment and the impact that incorrect rubbish disposal has on our town," she said.
Beerburrum students clean up
Contributed by Katrina D’Clara Cr Rick Baberowski recently caught up with principal Ms Francis and chappy Donna (pictured right); kindly donating some rubbish pick up claws for students to use during the recent Clean Up Australia Day activities at the school. These great tools were put to good use; picking up some squishy rubbish out in the school’s car park and around the eating area. The recently elected Eco Warriors Kyron and Ellie, both from Year 6, look forward to using them in their role in maintaining a cleaner and sustainable school environment. Principal Ms Francis was happy with the results of the Clean Up activity on Friday, March 4. “The school looks very ‘clean’ and only minimal rubbish was collected from inside the grounds on the Clean Up day. Students are getting the message about putting rubbish in the bins or into the compost bins - great to see!”

Keep it messy mate! with Ann McGrath That’s one of those sayings that I heard early in our revegetation journey and it has stuck with me. Having things look messy comes easily to me but is not a natural inclination for many, including my husband. We want to clean the bush up; prune it, rake it, trim it, mow it and generally fix it so that it looks neat and tidy. Initially, we did that and we burned many piles of rubbish as we cleared away our unwanted vegetation – mostly weed trees. Then, the heavy rain came and as most of our property is on a slope, any soil that was there was washed away and on the flatter areas, the weeds returned even healthier than they were before. Slowly, our thinking changed, helped by a family of variegated wrens living in pile of rubbish that we hadn’t got around to burning. Not only did we leave them undisturbed but we started spreading unwanted branches and trees around on the barren areas to stop erosion and to naturally rot and over time replace the soil lost by the erosion. We left large areas of native shrubs and grasses to grow untouched and we planted even more native shrubs and grasses. The rewards have been the huge increase in the variety of wildlife that we encounter; birds both large and small, mammals, lizards and insects. The food chain is alive and well. The need to be aware of and prepared for fire is constantly on our minds and a happy compromise needs to be found between the manicured, and the completely wild look, but it can be done. Just gotta love the bush!

Local Government Election 2016 - Election information
Referendum to give politicians more time - Yes or No? by Greg Brown At the same time as being asked to vote in the Local Government elections on March 19, you will also be asked to vote in a referendum on a fixed and longer term for Parliament. The State Government will be asking whether or not you support a change to the Queensland Constitution so that parliamentary terms are changed from three years to four years and held at a fixed time of the year. The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) have produced a ‘yes’ case and a ‘no’ case information sheet, which has been posted to all households in Queensland. If you haven’t received yours, you can read them in full at ECQ website (www.ecq.qld.gov. au). Each document was written by those Members of Parliament who support that viewpoint. There have only ever been seven State-initiated referenda in Queensland, with the last being about day light saving in 1992. In 1991, the question of four-year terms was put to the people as a referendum, but voted down by a majority of the populace. In our quest to keep our local communities informed, GC&M News has tried to summarise and present the yes and the no cases. (The arguments presented below are for information purposes only and are not reflective of the views of the author or Glasshouse Country & Maleny News staff.)
The ‘Yes’ case The ‘yes’ case was supported in Parliament by the Labor Party, the Liberal National Party and Peter Wellington. By voting ‘yes’ at the referendum, you will be agreeing to the State elections being held every four years on the last Saturday of October. According to the information sheet, not only is the yes case supported by the majority of Parliament, it has the support of a broad range of community leaders and organisations because it offers benefits to communities right across Queensland. These include the Queensland Council of Unions, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland, the Queensland Tourism Industry Council, and Local Governments. The main reasons presented for supporting the yes case are as follows. A set date for a general election every four years. Giving more certainty around timing of State general elections will prevent summer holidays being interrupted by an election and remove uncertainty for the tourism industry, event organisers and families who like to plan their travel. Takes the politics out of elections being called. Having a fixed date and fixed term takes the politics
out of election timing and prevents the government of the day trying to take advantage of calling a snap election. Policy development would be less driven by short-term political considerations and governments could act with a longer-term view, particularly for planning and delivery of major infrastructure. Fewer elections means Queenslanders save money. The last Queensland general election cost Queenslanders over $24 million to run. The average time between each of the last 10 general elections in Queensland has been two years and seven months. A YES vote would result in fewer elections and cost savings for Queenslanders. Easier for Regional and North Queensland. For Regional and North Queensland, it means the election period is taken out of the wet season, which can prove difficult for regional communities exercising their right to vote. Most other states and territories have fixed four-year terms. The current maximum three-year term for Queensland’s Legislative Assembly was introduced in the 1890s. All but one (Tasmania) of the other Australian states and territories have introduced fixed four-year terms for their lower house. Queensland’s local councils also have fixed four-year terms. The introduction of fixed four-year terms would bring our Parliament into line with Queensland’s local councils, which have had a fixed four-year model since 2000. The ‘No’ case The ‘no’ case was supported in Parliament by the Katter Party. By voting ‘no’ at the referendum, you will be agreeing to keep the status quo where governments are elected for a maximum of three years. According to the information sheet, to ensure Queensland has a strong and robust Parliament that represents the people, the best protection is to retain the current three year term. This Bill proposes to change Queensland’s constitutional law so that politicians are elected for an extra year. The decision to re-elect or remove a government or MP is based on their performance. A good government should not be afraid of being held accountable after three years of service. Four-year terms in Queensland are a bad idea, for a range of reasons. Less democracy and voter control. Queenslanders will have to wait longer to vote-out a bad government. Longer parliamentary terms water down democratic standards and reduce the accountability of politicians
to the electors. Poor government decisions stay in place for an extra year. Four-year terms will dilute the right of Queenslanders to vote out underperforming politicians. Wrong for a state without an Upper House. Queensland is the only State without an Upper House to review laws or question the actions of the government. Three-year terms were entrenched in the Constitution of Queensland to protect your rights in the absence of an Upper House. Without an Upper House to review laws or question the government, what the government wants, the government gets. Unlike the US, UK, Canada, NZ or even Victoria, Queensland has no Bill of Rights either. So the courts can’t review bad laws. Until these areas are reformed, regular elections are the only protection Queenslanders have. No guarantee there will be better planning and policy. There is no guarantee that the State will benefit from less frequent elections. Other forces, such as overseas markets, exchange rates, commodity prices and the policies of the Commonwealth and other governments affect government planning, usually without warning. There is no guarantee that four-year terms will increase productivity. In fact governments are equally likely to become less responsive and more complacent. Increased social cost to Queenslanders. A bad or unpopular government guaranteed a four-year term is capable of costing the Queensland community far more than the cost of an election. Puts politicians’ job security ahead of voters’ rights. Who is pushing for four-year terms? In 1991, Queenslanders like you voted against four year terms. Who is pushing this unnecessary referendum today? Politicians. Why? It gives all politicians more job security. And it gives government more power, more time and less accountability. The right for all to vote was won, just over a century ago: to ensure we, the people, could recall bad governments and MPs; and to ensure that every person had a say in government and policy. Longer terms will mean politicians hear our voices less often. In our silence, powerful lobby groups will have greater say. Four-year terms dilute the power of the people to hold the Queensland government and politicians to account. The ability to vote is the birthright of every citizen. Don’t weaken it. The government of the day dominates Parliament. Longer terms will give the Premier and Government of the day virtually total power. Who benefits if we vote less often? Not you.
Local Government elections … this Saturday This Saturday, your democratic right to decide who represents you in Council - both at the Divisional and the Mayoral levels - is here. Local Government Election 2016 - Know Your Candidate for Division 1 This week we asked the Division 1 candidates what is one issue from Beerwah and from Landsborough that concerns them and what would they do about it if elected?

Beerwah Over the last 11 weeks, residents have spoken to me on a multitude of practical issues in and around Beerwah including road and verge maintenance and design, lack of public transport, tip fees, incomplete pathways and walkways, and dangerous trees dropping branches on high usage pathways. However the underlying issue aired by residents is the insufficient dialogue, communication and support by the elected representative when residents were seeking support for their particular issue. This resulted in high levels of dissatisfaction at an individual level as well as with the Council generally. Solution … I will schedule monthly community meetings in Beerwah (and other locations) to provide general updates in addition to specific matters ensuring that residents are genuinely heard and matters of particular concern are addressed. I will underpin this with a strong and professional voice on Strategic Development and as a Change Agent in lobbying within Council and with State and Federal representatives resulting in achieving a better deal for Beerwah. Landsborough Landsborough also has a multitude of issues including road maintenance and drainage, bat colony health issues, council staff inconsistency and incompetence, tip fees, degradation and loss of heritage and historical assets and volunteers, arts and culture facilities and lack of railway parking and advocacy by the elected representative. The most common issue of concern in Landsborough continues to be the main road / rail intersection with congestion and major pedestrian safety. My short term solution is for increased parking capacity located to the east of the railway line along with appropriate pedestrian access to the station. This will provide immediate relief to the parking and roads on the western side of the rail line for retail outlets and locals. My medium term solution is to provide road improvements to realign the road and adjacent car parking to allow for better traffic flow and parking for commercial and retail outlets. My long term solution is to achieve rail line duplication from Brisbane and the rail line into the sunshine coast via Caloundra South and coupled to the light rail for regional commuting. This will remove a substantial level of non local traffic.
Email: daveritsonforscc@gmail.com
Beerwah It may seem fairly minor, but nonetheless significant … the lack of sign posting to direct drivers where to find parking in town. It’s not for a lack of parking; there are plenty behind the shops and premises along Simpson Street (for a short while at least). But visitors to the town would not be aware of it. And the town entrance statement is easily over looked. I’d ensure this is improved. And it need not cost much at all. Caravan/RV park. Whilst there is limited capacity behind the sportsgrounds, why is there a three day stay limit? Three days is not long enough for travellers to really check out the district, but worse, it’s not long enough for them to require purchasing anything much from the local businesses. We are missing out on their business just because of this three day limitation. The sportsground is ably managed by a dedicated bunch of volunteers who do a great job. I’d make it at least a week long limit and make it all the more worthwhile for travellers, those volunteers, and indeed the town itself. Landsborough Easily the biggest issue for Landsborough is the rail crossing and parking at the station. Unfortunately we will not likely see much done about it until the rail line duplication takes place. That of course is a State Government project. However, it is essential that all the related parts of the project are addressed at the same time. It all needs to be properly planned beforehand. This is where I see it as essential for Council to be strongly involved in that process to ensure it all comes together in a practical coherent manner. Council and the community cannot simply trust the State Government to plan extensively beyond just the rail duplication (we’ve seen that with the Bruce Highway project). If it is not brought together correctly, we’ll end up with a series of projects over many years having to deal with the constraints of each previous project which could be disastrous for the town.

Beerwah Again I can only say that because I have little feedback over what needs addressing, and having spoken to friends around Beerwah, there has been very little happening in Division 1. I notice our current Councillor is now turning to promoting what has happened in the whole of the Sunshine Coast (all Divisions). This seems to highlight other writings in our areas about lots of talk and lack of action for Division 1. However for Beerwah something has to be done to get tourists to return. I repeat that Aldi has been a big drawcard, notable for encouraging locals coming from further afield. Would a Council owned caravan park or two be a big drawcard for Division 1? I have heard this has been raised on several occasions, but seemingly fails to attract debate. Why? There are many spots around just out of Beerwah and Landsborough that could surely be used, with minimal impact to the towns apart from income. I see a large notice on Steve Irwin Way, north of Beerwah, financed I guess by one or more Beerwah traders, explaining how to get into Beerwah. So seems that a priority would be to address the needs of Beerwah small business and to encourage more diversity of shops to promote a broader range of products available locally. Beerwah was once promoted to be our Hinterland shopping centre, however seems to still be struggling to survive. Landsborough For Landsborough I have read almost nothing, so at this stage I’m not aware of issues. I can therefore only repeat that I would really encourage all locals to have their say on what they want and need addressed, and repeat I would promote this with a committee, and an email forum so as to get a real feel of what needs attention, and priorities from everyone interested. So I can only say that I would soon become aware of the issues, and would start to address them. The new Bruce Highway interchange is obviously of concern, indeed to many in Division 1, but viable suggestions from locals to reduce the impact on our side of the highway still seem to be failing. We need to be heard. www.gcnews.com.au
Beerwah Beerwah has been my family's home for 28 years and I want to protect it. The biggest challenge next term will be managing the impact of Aura (Caloundra South) which is under construction now – we've all seen the billboards. It will bring a shopping centre the size of Sunshine Plaza and a city the size of Gladstone 11 minutes from Beerwah. This means we need to do several things: 1. Continue to improve Beerwah's commercial centre to generate local jobs and protect them from the competition. 2. Build up Beerwah's roads and push for the Beerburrum-Landsborough rail duplication and a light rail link to the coast to avoid massive traffic congestion. 3. Make sure Beerwah retains its country town feel and heritage. I'm proud of how the community and council were able to work together in the last four years to turn Beerwah from a place that was ‘dying a slow death’ to a place with a thriving future. Let's keep going! Landsborough It's Landsborough's turn for some serious investment. The main issue for Landsborough is delivering a major upgrade of the town that addresses some of its major problems while holding onto its heritage look and feel. That is my main goal for next term. I would work with the community on the exact plan, but from my discussions with Landsborough residents, I think it should include at least four goals: 1. Fixing the intersection at the rail crossing to reduce congestion and make it safer to get through. 2. Getting more car parking for the station on the opposite side of the tracks to stop commuter cars clogging up the town. 3. Improving the main streets with new landscaping and lighting to support the shops and create jobs. 4. Improving access and visibility for the museum. Landsborough used to be the centre of the region, but it's been left behind for too long. Let's give it pride of place again. MARCH 16 2016 |

School News Stepping back in time Contributed by Kylie Merola On Thursday, March 3, Landsborough State School's Year 5 and 6 students embarked on a journey back in time. They travelled to Queensland’s Colonial Island Prison, St Helena, in Moreton Bay. The excursion complimented their history studies this term. From the moment they boarded the boat for their trip across to the island, the students were taken on a history adventure. St Helena was the State's maximum security prison from 1867 to 1932. They learnt about the transition from convict to penal settlements in Brisbane and the crimes and treatment of the prisoners. Students were in awe when they saw the ruins and experienced the eerie feel of the prison as they listened intently to the stories told by the tour guides. The tour guides were in character for the whole day - as Prisoner 31, 321, and the Warden. They watched a re-enactment of some of the punishments that were relatively common to the prisoners, including lashings, solitary confinement and removal of rations. It was a great excursion and the students learnt a lot by being sent to prison (for a day).
Crazy hair for good cause The team at Goodstart Early Childhood Centre in Glass House Mountains decided to hold a Crazy Hair day at the centre last week. The children had glitter hair spray and colours added into their hair and made donations for the Leukaemia Foundation. The staff was keen to hold the event to show support to their work colleague at Goodstart at Caloundra, who had been diagnosed with cancer, and was being brave and shaving this year. Happy campers
Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School's Year 4 students recently attended a camp at Tunnel Ridge Ranch. With sunshine and clear skies, the children embarked on two days of fun and engaging activities including horse riding, canoeing, archery and leather work. One of the highlights was a night time bushwalk, followed by storytelling around the campfire. For most students, this was their first school camp experience. The aim of the camp was to build resilience, gain independence and work effectively in teams. There were many favourite moments and fun times. Although the group returned weary from their adventures, they all brought home with them memories and experiences to last a lifetime.

Our Preps are having a Jolly time
Our Prep class of 12 students have settled into Peachester State School very well. Prep teacher Mrs Leone Owen and teacher aide Mrs Carter, are this year teaching a Prep/1 class. Together they bring much teaching wisdom to the classroom and our students are loving learning. The Prep year at Peachester State School maintains a very strong emphasis on the benefits of play-based learning while still meeting QLD School curriculum learning requirements. Peachester State School follows the JollyPhonics reading program. This involves learning a special ‘fun’ action to memorise and practice sounds and letter combinations and is so much fun for active little minds. Mrs Owen also says that the first year at school is such an important one for learning resilience. Many games and activities are planned around improving the childrens’ confidence and resilience in understanding new social situations. Welcome to our newest little Black Cockatoos.

The school chaplain Mark Whysall and the students at Mooloolah State School would like to express their sincere thanks to local businesses for their generous donations and support towards the Chaplaincy program within the school. Ruth Zerner from Mooloolah Pharmacy and David Zimmerman from Mooloolah Dental have supported greatly with funds to help chaplaincy. Without community and business support the chaplaincy program wouldn't possibly run efficiently. So thank you very much for your continued support of the school and chaplaincy. The chaplaincy program at Mooloolah State School is an important part of the school’s student support network. Chappy Mark is involved in supporting students in a variety of ways, ranging from in class support, games to aid in social and emotional support, gardening programs and one of the students’ favourites ‘Cooking with Chappy’. This service endeavours to operate school wide, helping all students and families where possible. In addition to this, Chappy Mark, who is at school every Monday and Friday, helps local families who need a hand in times of crisis. The chaplaincy service is seen as a vital part of our school’s support system.

You Said It A man's home is his castle
In the past week I've been feeling a little like Darryl Kerrigan in that loveable Aussie movie 'The Castle'. Although my beautiful family home and those of my 18 neighbours isn't under threat of compulsory acquisition, the 'serenity', cleanliness, safeness, happiness and value of our peaceful little part of Glass House Mountains certainly is. Just like Darryl Kerrigan I am left shaking my head, still in disbelief at what is happening. For more than 20 years the site at the entrance to Back Creek Road, Glass House Mountains has been home to children's cubby houses, with little to no timber processing occurring during that time. For quite a few years now the cubby houses have also been missing. Our neighbourhood was recently informed by the incoming business that 'timber processing' would be continuing on site, with the most advanced processing machines in the world being installed. After contacting council immediately, a meeting was organised by council to allow myself and other neighbours to discuss our concerns with the owner of the incoming business. In short, our community believes that a legal loop hole is being exploited. The land in question is zoned as rural, but in the 1980's a 'description of land use' was granted for 'light industry'. The 'Old' sawmill ceased operations in the 1990's, and a community has since popped up and prospered on Back Creek Road and Rovera Road. Council is currently checking whether they can make a case for 'abandonment' of timber processing, but have informed us that this will be very difficult. I am hoping that somebody in the community can be our Charles 'Bud' Tingwell and point us in the right direction. We're not sure how to proceed from here; but we want to put up a fight. Nobody should have to share their castle with industry unless that’s how it was offered and valued when they decided to call it home. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated (I can be contacted via Glasshouse Country and Maleny News). Peter Voigt Glass House Mountains
Council’s Division 1 Election
I’m an ex Mechanical Engineer and award winning Ecotourism Owner and I know how important it is to have the best person for the job to look after his flock in the council. So I would like to tell you a little about Dave Ritson. I have known Dave Ritson for many years. He is a very honest man and has worked at a community level where he has been a leader in the advancement of change for the better. He has been involved in the design and implementation of the Caloundra Road Interchange, being part of a government consultative group, having a strong influence in the design involving the cost, environment and access to businesses. He is a local small business owner and appreciates the value that small business gives to the prosperity of the community in jobs and growth. Dave certainly appreciates the importance of local agricultural industries gleaned from his extensive work on his own properties in broad acre mixed use farming, and the value of efficient and economic use of machinery to produce a profitable outcome. I have a strong belief that Dave will drive the council to allow more land to be available for industrial and commercial use to facilitate small and large businesses and employment opportunities. The Sunshine Coast Council seems to be very slow in this area. It is very important that you cast your vote for Dave Ritson to ensure that you have a young and vibrant representative in Division 1. This is ridiculous
The peacock debate of Clearview Drive is becoming ridiculous. Here are a few real facts. 1. Peacocks are an introduced species which have been allowed to breed uncontrolled and roam the council reserve and surrounding residential area uncontrolled. 2. Their numbers have increased from a few to dozens within a few years. 3. Any introduced species - dogs, cats, rabbits and birds such as Indian Minors - that breed and roam uncontrolled are regarded as feral and endanger the native flora and fauna. 4. Rabbits were once regarded as cute and nice to look at. 5. Native animals that once shared the council reserve and backyards are on the decrease since these huge feral scavengers have been uncontrolled. 6. The owner of the property where the peacocks return each night has admitted to me the peacocks have just wandered into the property – so once again, feral. Solution: If anyone enjoys these beautiful birds, do the right thing, act with your brain and your heart and within the law. Apply to council to keep the legal number of birds, clip the feathers of one wing (as is done with chickens) so the bird cannot fly thus escape the enclosed yard. There are laws made for keeping animals in residential areas. Abide by them and people will live in harmony. Being an irresponsible animal lover does not help any animal. Sandra- 60 year resident of Glass House and 14 year visitor to Clearview Drive
They are spectacular
We have lived in Clearview Drive for 21 years. It is a great place to live and we enjoy the privilege of seeing kangaroos and birds – including peacocks around our area and home. Peacocks are such majestic birds and we truly delight in their presence. They are most welcome on our property and they can poop on our verandah whenever they like. What a small price to pay to clean up poop and have these beautiful birds parading around. They are spectacular! We love them. Surely in this day and age of such violence, destruction and disharmony, people can stop and see the beauty of nature. Why are people so intolerant and self-centred? It is amazing how much a small percentage of people can wreck what the majority see as beautiful. We have not been spoken to by any council workers about the peacocks and we do not work so there has been no effort to contact us. I guess the old saying ‘empty barrels make most noise’ is fitting in this situation. The Fairclough Family Glass House Mountains
Day of Prayer
I’m sure all who attended the world day of prayer service on Friday, March 4, enjoyed it immensely and congratulations to the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church for organising and hosting the service. The theme this year was ‘Receive children, receive me’ which was compiled by women in Cuba. People from seven local churches participated and attendance was 80. All joined in fellowship after the service for a cuppa and chat, while enjoying a most delicious morning tea. The offertory resulted in $786.00 which will be forwarded to the QLD office of World Day of Prayer for distribution. Huge thanks to all for your participation and generous heart. Eunice Prickett World Day of Prayer Co-ordinator, Glasshouse Country
No place for party politics
Why is the Greens political party trying to force its way into our local council? Our council has always been free of Party politics. I have always admired our council because it has been independent of all the political nonsense that goes on around the state. I have looked at some of the Greens policies and there are some really weird suggestions among them. They even want to legalise all illicit drugs!I don’t know how a local council would get anything done for the ratepayer, if their agenda is controlled by a political party from Brisbane. Olive Hockings Maleny
Rick’s light rail fizzer
On two occasions now I have heard our incumbent Division 1 Councillor claim that the light rail network proposed for the Sunshine Coast will extend all the way to Beerwah. Well, I’ll call him out on this. It will not ever be happening … ever! So it’s a claim way too far. For someone that claims to be big on the topic of transport, if he doesn’t even understand that this is clearly the wrong mode of transport for that route, then what sort of representative have we got? Beerwah to the coast by rail, which is an essential infrastructure project that needs to happen sooner rather than later, will only be viable with heavy rail. The CAMCOS project is the only viable way to provide mass transit for commuters to Caboolture and beyond to the city. It is the only way to effectively relieve the traffic load on the Bruce Highway. Adding more lanes to that will only make it a bigger carpark. The existing sections with four lanes are not even where the worst congestion consistently occurs. Yes, sure these major projects are State and Federally funded, but it is essential that our local Council strongly advocates that these projects are designed and built to best serve the local communities. So now is the time to elect an alternative to the incumbent. Of course I welcome your vote, but any of the three challengers will be prepared to have a real go at the position to work for you. Dave Ritson, Division 1 Candidate Beerwah
Looking for Thomas

You’re bluffing
I am extremely upset with Cr Baberowski’s recent Know Your Candidate’ offering – particularly his statement ‘it can be done’. He is referring to the removal of the ‘haulage route’ through Glass House Mountains. Oh really? How come Rick has only just discovered the answer to a few Coonowrin Road residents’ problems on the eve of an election. Come on Rick, you’re bluffing. You have absolutely nothing that will remove haulage trucks from Coonowrin Road and the middle of the township. If you had, then you would have done it before the last election, or during your last term. For the past 10 years I have lived adjacent to Coonowrin Road. I travel to and through the township two or three times a day. I have nothing but respect for the drivers of the large trucks from Hansons Quarry. There is a sign on the exit from the quarry to the effect that ‘The speed limit for our trucks along Coonowrin Road is 50 k/mh. If you don’t like it, don’t come back’ – exactly. And I believe that a far higher percentage of trucks obey the stop sign outside the Glass House Mountains RSL than other vehicles! www.gcnews.com.au
Look at a map – a large number of people work in the quarry that delivers a huge amount of much needed product north and south of Glass House Mountains. It would cost millions to straighten and level alternative routes from the quarry to the Bruce Highway. And that would only shift any ‘noise/ pollution’ problem from one area to another. If you don’t like trucks bringing wealth into this area, move. The quarry was here before you were. Roger Bonhomme Glass House Mountains Editor’s Note As the letter ‘You're bluffing’ only arrived in time for this week’s edition, and because this is the last edition before the election, we have asked Cr Baberowski to respond to Roger’s concern in this week’s edition.
Glass House is worth it
Let's stick to the issues, I didn't criticise the quarry or the drivers, I support our quarries, I've worked with them on several projects and look forward to doing so again. My position is simply that shifting the haulage route would benefit the town by taking the large noisy trucks out of its heart, and that using an alternative bypass would not impact the quarry. The current route holds Glass House township back from reaching its potential as a relaxed country town. The idea of an alternative route was suggested to me by several long-standing Glass House residents, and in talking to many others, it's clear there is a lot of support. As I said, council engineers have assessed potential alternative routes where bypass roads could be built, and have established that it can be done. I want to engage in a full community consultation before settling on a specific route, but the options range from a short bypass road behind the information centre to avoid Bruce Parade and Reed Street, to taking the trucks down a new road from Old Gympie Road. The quarry has been making contributions to a council-controlled fund for many years with the purpose of delivering road maintenance and upgrades related to the haulage route, so we do have funds to work with. If needed, I would argue for council to contribute additional money, and it may be advantageous to tie in with a larger state or federal project like rail duplication. It won't happen overnight, but I have suggested this as a long term goal, in addition to the short term goals that I can commit to deliver for Glass House early next term - the planned infrastructure for the
new district park, several new pathways, improving the station bus stop, etc. I believe the Glass House Mountains community would not expect any less.
Untruths published
I'm not sure how Joyce Newton (notable LNP stalwart) could have her letter published with such a slanderous untruth in it. The Australian Greens are not advocating legalising illicit drugs. They are advocating decriminalising the use of illegal drugs, i.e. still illegal just that users are not treated as criminals and are in a better position to be treated for addiction. Dealing in these drugs would still be a criminal offence. The Greens have not opposed an appropriately located Zipline project. Nor have they opposed the Glenview water park. So, is this the LNP playing divisive and confusion tactics for the local government elections? Remember, the last election and the dubious actions around the mayoral candidate's support by members of the LNP! Considering the amount of support certain candidates have from the LNP, we must ask how much of that is passed on by property developers? Whereas the Greens have well published values and policies. Of particular note is one of the four core values being ‘Grassroots Democracy’. Meaning the policies and power come from the people. Garry Claridge Maleny Greens
15 storey high NBN tower at Maleny
The excitement about the council’s purchase, through the Environment Levy monies, of a large extension and buffer for Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve has been blighted. In recent letters to residents and at an Information Session on March 10, NBN announced a proposal for a 15 storey high (46m) microwave tower adjacent to the Reserve and this new land. Local scenic views protected through the Council’s Planning Scheme are being threatened. It will not be just a thin wispy line as depicted on the ‘before and after’ montages displayed by NBN, but a large addition to the skyline – towering about 20 m above existing trees. The Reserve and surrounding areas contain many species of endangered flora and fauna which may be affected by the proposed new intrusion. The local bats would have a man-made obstacle to avoid on their daily flights in and out of the Reserve.
About 100 residences are within the 400 m exclusion zone contained within the Council’s Telecommunications Facilities Code. The Objection Period for a smaller tower outside Eudlo has closed with over 40 people raising their voices against that proposal and about the need for NBN to adhere to the Council’s Planning Scheme. This latest assault on our scenic region by NBN further reinforces the 18 month old request for a Towerless NBN for Maleny and Hinterlands. Please follow and be part of the local campaign on Facebook – search for ‘Maleny and Witta/Conondale NBN Tower Action Group’. Jim Straker Towerless NBN for Maleny and Hinterlands
Election time
It seems that the entire world is in election mode. Division 1 will have to either re-elect Councillor Rick Baberowski or elect a new candidate. The timing for Rick’s first election was great because the Beerwah Plus project was in full swing and this allowed Rick to put his personal stamp on the outcome. Because of Rick’s efforts Beerwah is one of the few small townships that can boast Street Art; not just the 'flashing pineapple picking robots' but also the stone sculptures in the Tower Green Park. The theme of our local stones repeats at the Turner Park Entrance and it will be interesting to see what council and Rick are up to with the started re-development of Turner Park. The railway towns have benefitted in the past three years from Rick’s tireless efforts to balance between Council requirements and resident’s wishes and I think for our area, Rick has done a great job. I would urge voters to give Rick the chance to continue to put pressure on council for our benefit. Ursula Starkovsky Glass House Mountains
Climate Change - Editor’s note With the large number of letters received this week GC&M News has decided to prioritise the letters that relate to this weekend’s Local Government election. All letters relating to the on-going debate on Climate Change have been held over until the next edition, while it has been great to see the passionate debate we have decided to call ‘time’ on the topic next week. However if you have any other issue which you would like to raise with other readers we would love to receive them, and of course as usual GC&M News will continue to focus on issues and not on personal attacks on others.

Your options when buying a second property. Purchasing additional properties has obvious benefits to your income from rent and capital gains, but it’s also one of the primary indicators of high financial comfort, according to Members Equity Bank. Its researchers found that household investments and property ownership were a “key factor” in increasing financial security. Obviously, there are plenty of reasons for buying more assets – but how do you get there? Unlocking your equity is integral to moving on in your property journey.
Option 1: A second home loan
If you find yourself being more than capable of paying off your current mortgage, but don’t have quite enough liquid capital to make a www.gcnews.com.au
purchase without a loan, the simplest option is just a new mortgage. It’s a very similar process to your first one, though there may be a few differences. Refinancing your current home loan is a possibility, so you can access some equity directly – paying off your old loan with a new one and receiving a cash lump sum in the form of the equity on your home. The key is to find the right loan that fits your needs – repayments, interest rate, and additional features such as lump sum payments. It is an excellent idea to seek advice from an expert mortgage broker about the range of choices available.
Option 2: Moving home loans
This is for those people who have enough equity in their current property or have enough liquid capital to buy without a traditional home loan. However, you may still find yourself just on the cusp of not being able to afford the gap between selling your current home and buying the new one. It’s a frustrating scenario, but solvable with what is known as a bridging loan. It’s a short-term option, and each lender offers different features, so again be sure to speak to your mortgage broker on your range of choices.

Hairy fundraiser for Leukemia Last Friday, Beerwah's Bella Grace Early Learning Centre participated in a Funky Hair Day to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation. Both staff and children alike, sprayed, coloured, glittered and created some amazing and unique hair-do's all to help raise much-needed funds towards the Leukemia foundation. It is so exciting to have the centre help contribute and it is also a great way for children to learn to think of others, especially those who are less fortunate than themselves. We look forward to making this an annual event on the Bella Grace calendar. Thank you to all of the families and staff who helped contribute and participate in the event.

Living Volunteers to be rewarded at Australia Zoo Mal Brough, Federal Member for Fisher has officially launched his Volunteer Celebration Day to be held at Australia Zoo on Saturday, May 14, during Volunteer Week. Volunteers from the Kawana Surf Club, Coastal Caring Clowns, Maleny Rural Firefighters and Australia Zoo joined Mr Brough for the launch and were treated to an up close experience with zoo animals as a taste of what to expect at the Celebration Day in May. Mr Brough said volunteers make an enormous contribution to our Sunshine Coast community and this event is about saying thank you and celebrating the efforts of all volunteers not just rewarding a few.
Australia Zoo has generously offered free admission on the day for volunteers and a discount for their families and will be presenting a special show in the Crocoseum just for the volunteers. “We have already had over 130 organisations register for the event with over 7000 volunteers between them; I want to make this the largest celebration of volunteers the coast has ever seen,”Mr Brough said. If you are part of a Sunshine Coast volunteer organisation and would like to register to attend you can go to http://malbrough.com.au/volunteercelebration/, once the organisation is registered your volunteers can then register for their free passes.
Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley The annual Visit Sunshine Coast Visitor Information Centre (VIC) Trade Show was held on March 1 at Aussie World. Over 60 tourism operators attended with displays and took advantage of the opportunity to connect with VIC volunteer ambassadors. There were horses (Flint and Outlaw) from Rainbow Beach Horse Rides, (Jasmine) the Macaw from Maleny Botanical Gardens, jams from the Eco Lodge and more. Nearly 200 VIC volunteer ambassadors from Gympie, Noosa, Sunshine Coast (including Glass House Mountains) and Brisbane Airport centres attended. The day also included the launch of Aussie World’s new logo and a briefing about the ‘World is Coming to the Sunshine Coast’ 2016 events campaign and what visitor centres can expect. This is the fourth year we have held this event and it has become more popular every year. It is free for Visit Sunshine Coast members and ambassadors, provides up-to-date and accurate information, includes morning tea and prizes – who wouldn’t want to come along?

Congratulations to Allan who certainly has an eye for a photograph. Unusual lighting has transformed a mundane subject into an eye-catching image. The photo was taken just before sunset on a Nikon Coolpix set to auto. Shadows of trees at the back of the house on the wall were overlaid by shadows of the bottles and twigs.

Do You Suffer From NERVE PAIN? Nerve pain is a particular type of pain that feels different to other types of pain. It often feels like shooting, stabbing or burning pain. Sometimes it can be as sharp and sudden as an electric shock. Nerve irritation can also produce numbness, tingling, itchiness, or numerous other types of altered sensation. Nerve pain, like all other types of pain, is NOT normal
In many cases of nerve pain, the problem/cause is Spinal Subluxation – a condition where one or more vertebrae have been pushed out of alignment and irritates the nerves that exit your The human body is designed to be strong, flexible, and pain-free. Health is spine. Your nerves branch off normal, pain and discomfort are not. So the question is - why do so many from your spinal cord, and then pass through tiny holes between the vertebrae. When the spine has been people experience pain and discomfort? The answer is quite simple. affected, the nerves are almost always affected as well.
Life is Stressful!
Physically, mentally and chemically stressful. Physical stresses include excessive sitting, repetitive stress from jobs and hobbies, poor posture, poor sleeping position, etc. Mental or emotional stress from finances, relationships and being too busy furthers the problems by tensing our muscles. And finally, most of us aren't eating as well as we should or drinking enough water, which adds to the growing numbers of stressors our bodies must deal with.
Our body has limits
What is the solution?
For over 120 years, chiropractors have known that spinal misalignments affect the nervous system. If you have Spinal Subluxation, nothing other than a chiropractic adjustment will correct the cause of your pain. Drugs may reduce the symptom, but only an adjustment will correct the cause. If you'd like to have your spine checked for Spinal Subluxation, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today.
Once these stressors exceed our body's ability to adapt, it causes a problem.

French comedy on a dairy farm ‘La Famille Belier’, has become a major export for France, despite its simple setting on a dairy farm and its centre in family relationships. It will be screened on Saturday, March 19, at 7.15pm in the Maleny Community Centre. (Doors open at 6.00pm for dinner catered by Wild Rocket). Three of the Belier family members are profoundly deaf. The fourth, 16-year-old Paula, has adopted the role of interpreter for the others to the outside world. When Paula chases a boy into a choir and accidentally exhibits a remarkable singing talent and is offered opportunities in Paris, her whole family ethos is changed. The music is inspiring; the relationships affecting; the comedy uproarious. Don’t miss the English subtitles, spiced with sexual humour. Maleny Film Society members may book on-line for themselves; or via the Maleny Information Centre for themselves and family/ friends. Bar and tea/coffee stand with homemade treats. What do Sunshine Coast koalas do in their spare time?
Don’t believe everything you read
To better understand how to protect and enhance the vulnerable koala population on the Sunshine Coast, council has teamed up with the University of Queensland to investigate the secret life of this iconic Australian species by tracking their every move. Manager Environmental Operations Chris Allan said the Environment Levy funded tracking program would enable council to study the ecology of koalas on the Sunshine Coast. “As part of the implementation of the ‘Koala Conservation Plan’, the tracking program will include up to six koalas from the Tanawha, and possibly Buderim area, being fitted with GPS collars and having a thorough health check at the same time,” Mr Allan said. “The data gathered will provide valuable insights into koala home ranges and habitat use in the study area. “We also hope to gain a better understanding of the way koalas move about the landscape and whether their activities are placing them at risk of vehicle strike or dog attack. “This is because research in South East Queensland has shown that loss and fragmentation of habitat, disease and trauma from car strikes and dog and feral animal attacks are taking a significant toll on koala populations, with some researchers warning the koala could be at risk of local extinctions.” Mr Allan said the Friends of the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens would also be playing an active role in the research project. “The Friends will be keeping tabs on where ‘Graham’ – a koala specially named after Friends of MRBG volunteer, Graham Innes – is located and what tree species he is using,” he said. The tracking program is just one of many components of council’s ‘Koala Conservation Plan’ aimed at protecting the Sunshine Coast koala population through a greater understanding of their habitat requirements and threats to their conservation.
It seems like Autumn is never coming, with hot, humid and wet summery conditions continuing. But that’s just how our sub-tropical climate works. The seasons don’t follow the predictable timelines that they do further south. But reading some gardening stories in various local media, you would know. The problem is that generally the people who write the stories aren’t gardeners, and they just take the information from websites or from a general gardening magazine. Recently I read that it’s time to make cherry jam now that they are in season … really? Cherries may be in the shops, but they’re more than likely imported. It’s not cherry season in Australia until about October. Then I’ve read that, as it is St Patrick’s Day on Thursday, it’s time to plant your sweet peas. It might be in Tasmania, Victoria or South Australia where the conditions are cooler, drier and less humid, but in subtropical Sunshine Coast, it’s way too early to plant them now. If you planted your sweet peas now using their recommendations, they’d shoot up quickly with lots of leafy growth, but this would most likely succumb to a mildew or fungal disease before too long due to our humidity. If they did survive, you’d probably not get very many flowers as they’ll try and bud up too early. And that’s the problem with relying on information that isn’t specific to our part of the country (or even our country, in some cases). Plant your sweet peas in mid-April to mid-May. It’s good to seek advice and to learn more about some gardening topic you’re interested in, but just be aware where the information comes from and the mass market it is aimed at. It’s pretty devastating when you put in effort and a lot of time into doing something which was doomed to fail from the start. My advice – see local information from Queensland websites, magazine or books. Or join one of our local gardening or specialty plant clubs.

Plant of the Month
Wax Flower Hoya australis
There are many species of this beautiful plant found and grown across the tropical parts of the world. Many of us are familiar with the range of colours, particularly pink Hoyas, grown in pots, on a trellis or hanging basket. The most common species found in Australia is Hoya Australis though a number of sub species of this plant exist. What we may not be aware of is that we have a species of Hoya native to our own area. Native wax flower is a Glass House Mountains plant found in rocky areas of our local area. It grows naturally as a vine or trailing plant in dry rainforest or over rocky cliffs. Leaves are opposite, thick and fleshy and the plant has milky sap. The beautiful flowers, mostly white, are borne in clusters of up to 20 and are highly perfumed. Hoya australis is a host plant for the larvae of the Common Crow butterfly. Plants grow readily from cuttings.

GLASSHOUSE COMMUNITY CHURCH 5493 0596
Glass House Mountains State School Main Hall - Sun 4.30pm
Rev Kathy Eddie - Glass House Community Church Genesis 37:4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. I was talking to someone the other day about their extended family. They made a comment along these lines, “Well that side of the family is a bit complicated. It is a long story and hard to understand.” That comment could so easily have been made about Joseph’s family. It is a churning pot of emotions. There is jealousy between the wives, jealousy between the sons, favouritism and a father who sits back and does nothing about these tensions. Is it any wonder that this family is about to explode? And explode it does. Sons take the responsibility of protecting their sister out of the hands of their father and seek revenge on all the males in a city. Reuben commits incest. Ten brothers gang up on another one and sell him into slavery. But despite this background God is working within this family. He raises Joseph up to be a

GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY
beacon of hope and salvation to his family and the entire nation of Egypt. Joseph was loved by his father but hated by his brothers. Joseph was sold into slavery but raised to be one of the highest officials in Egypt. This boy from the mixed-up family was used mightily by God. So often people use their mixed-up families as an excuse for their own mistakes in life. They believe that God cannot use them because of their past experiences. The story of Joseph reminds us that God is capable of using people from incredibly dysfunctional families to do amazing things. Just as God did this with the life of Joseph, He can still use each and every person today. It doesn’t matter what’s in your past, God is capable of moulding you into the person that He wants you to be.

Sport Top achievement award
Passion, dedication and hard work have paid off for Maleny Golf Club’s course superintendent Mick McCombein the form of a prestigious achievement award last week at the Queensland Golf Industry Awards at Jupiter’s on the Gold Coast. Mick was one of five finalists in the running for the 2015 Living Turf Superintendent’s Achievement Award following his nomination by Maleny Golf Club’s President Dr Max Whitten. Dr Whitten said the nomination recognised Mick’s insight in interpreting the design by golf architect Graham Papworth, diverse operating skills and ability to manage and motivate volunteers who helped build and then maintain the nine-hole course. “Mick McCombe has played a pivotal role in translating a weed-ridden, largely abandoned dairy farm into an operating golf course which is now receiving high praise from both members and visitors alike,” Dr Whitten said. “When Mick came on board he worked closely with the design and construction team under the leadership of Club Vice-President and engineer Rod Richards to tweak the bulk earthworks to ensure the tees, fairways and greens reflected Graham Papworth’s vision and the outcome speaks for itself.” On accepting the award, Mick acknowledged the unqualified support he had received from Dr Whitten and Maleny Golf Club Greens Director
Horse Riding @ Rossi’s 5494 8515 or 0401 294 241
Rob Bailo, since taking on the daunting challenge in September 2014. “I would not have been able to build the course the way we have without their full backing and of course I want to thank our fantastic team of volunteers who’ve enabled us to achieve such a high standard of presentation,” he said. Dr Whitten said Mick’s prowess as an A-grade golfer and ability to operate dry-hired earthmoving machinery had proved to be valuable attributes. “Above all his personal capacity to work with and motivate volunteers and contractors has played a huge part in constructing a good golf course in a short time frame and with a modest budget,” he said. Mick said he was now looking forward to starting construction of the second nine holes at Maleny. Prior to taking on the role of Course Superintendent at Maleny, Mick was the Course Foreman at Headland Golf Club, Buderim, and during a 15-year industry career, gained international experience at Coombe Hill Golf Club in London.

Beerwah Ladies Golf
Contributed by Carolyn Gamble On Thursday, March 10, with the sky looking dark and ominous, 58 ladies took to the beautiful Beerwah and District Golf Course to play a single stableford event. The field was slightly down this week due to a number of ladies representing the club at the Bribie Island Open Day. The rain mostly stayed away with only the last few groups getting a little damp. The day was sponsored by Sue Williamson and Pam Marsden and we thank them for their generosity. Division 1 (0-27 hcp) winner with a very creditable score of 38 points was Karen Kemp and the runner up was Jenny Kelly with 35 points. Division 2 (28-45) winner was Jackie Collinson with 31 points and the runner up was Gail Murphy with 30 points. The ball rundown went to 30 points. Nearest the pin on 2 went to Carolyn Gamble, on 5 and 16 to Cathy Stone and second shot on 18 went to Gail Gundry. Congratulations to all the winners and thankyou to everyone who participated in what was a most successful day. Next week’s event is single stroke. New members, visitors and beginner golfers are most welcome.
Winners are Sue Williamson, Jenny Kelly and Gail Murphy

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
Gun toting Texan A cowboy rode into town and stopped at the saloon for a drink. Unfortunately, the locals always had a habit of picking on newcomers. When he finished, he found his horse had been stolen. He goes back into the bar, flips his gun into the air, catches it above his head without even looking and fires a shot into the ceiling. "Who stole my horse?" he yelled with surprising forcefulness. No one answered. "I'm gonna have another beer and if my horse ain't back outside by the time I'm finished, I'm gonna
do what I dun back in Texas and I don't want to have to do what I dun back in Texas!" Some of the locals shifted restlessly. He had another beer, walked outside, and his horse was back! He saddled up and started to ride out of town. The bartender wandered out of the bar and asked, "say partner, what happened in Texas?" The cowboy turned back and said, "I had to walk home!" CANCER June 22– July 22 If you are having some sleepless nights it may be the result of accumulated worries. However, rest easy as the best way to dispel all anxiety is to take charge. Remember that you are clever in letting your intuition guide you. You and your partner can make great strides toward important goals. LEO July 23 – August 22 This week ahead the Sun changes out of the sign of Pisces into Aries, so your Leo Sun sign enters the lively, enthusiastic field of Aries and that boosts your energy drive with confidence and exploratory zeal. Whatever has gone wrong financially will see a sudden turn around. Efforts pay off! VIRGO August 23 – September 22 A Jupiter/Pluto contact in your star chart boosts your power and influence. You can even dare to dream big! Also, you can note that changes coming to you are surely for the better. If doing an inventory of your home, it may bring to your attention upgrades that are needed. Avoid accidents. LIBRA September 23– October 22 You can expect some exciting diversions with a friend or group. It should be fun. This is because the Sun enters Aries and you can expect a month of action in your relationship sector. You may volunteer with pets that can bring loving rewards. The week produces recuperation and contentment.
SCORPIO October 23– November 22 This week make safety a priority! Also it is suggested to restrain anger, as well as impulsiveness, as that can lead to unwise business decisions or purchases. You are much better putting off decisions for another day. A social opportunity can bring you transformation with new social connections. SAGITTARIUS 23 November – December 22 This week you are about to see the big picture. When you have done so, focus your thinking to make things better at home, especially regarding your finances. Your efforts before the public or on your professional stage can bring big dividends this week. Expect abundant good fortune now. CAPRICORN December 23– January 19 If there is a fast response needed to cope with some crisis you will need to be mindful and deliberate in all that you do. Powerful forces are at work that will bring you positive change. If a project started last year has run out of steam, commit to it again as you will see tangible results soon. AQUARIUS January 20– February 19 There may be too many emotional considerations to factor into talks or articles. But studied carefully through the day everything leads to evening satisfactions. This week gives some of your best days of possible advancement, opportunities, and empowerment when it comes to money.
