Local News Ready for the rodeo This Saturday night the Honky Tonk Rodeo will be heading back to the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club for a great night of family fun with plenty of action! Following a gap of almost a decade, last year’s Rodeo ran so smoothly, and the club received so much positive feedback about how much everyone had enjoyed the night and what a great atmosphere the event had, that the Sports Club’s new committee and staff are keen to grow the event this year. Beerwah local and Honky Tonk Rodeo staff member Amanda Millburn reckons the night will be bigger with more riders, more events, and if the community get behind it once again, hopefully a bigger crowd. Held in conjunction with the National Rodeo Association, and forming part of the South East Queensland professional circuit, there will be a number of events throughout the night including riders on bucking broncos and raging bulls. The program will also include a junior steer ride for under 16’s and a poddy ride for competitors under 12 years, as well as an open bull ride, open saddle ride and the crowd pleasing bareback rides. Club President, Warren Raddatz said the generous support from all of the sponsors for the

Crowds at last year's rodeo event, and in particular the Gold Sponsor Tyzac Vacuum Excavation who received naming rights for the event, enabled the Club to hold the event. “While the ‘Save the Club’ Campaign has seen great support from the community – these type of regular community events are really important for the on-going operations of the club,” Warren said. The night will be a great way to kick off the school holidays. There will be food and drinks available as well as a full bar service. Tickets can be purchased from the gate and are adults $20.00, kids under 12 $5.00 and under 3’s are free, with a family ticket (two adults and two kids) $45.00. Keeping highway exits open is critical Almost 100 local Palmview and Glenview businesses and residents rallied together outside of the Aussie World Garage last Friday in a show of support to ‘Save Exit 190’. As part of the State Government and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) plans for the upgrade of the Bruce Highway, the entrances and exits in the vicinity of the Aussie World complex – on both the eastern and western sides of the highway – are slated to be closed. According to State Member Mark McArdle, this will be an appalling outcome for local businesses and residents, and visiting tourists. In a stirring address to the gathering, Mr McArdle was adamant that a better solution must be found. “The decision to close the on and off ramps will direct traffic away from local businesses, potentially meaning that they would close down with the resulting loss of local jobs and services,” Mr McArdle said. “Local residents will lose direct and easy access to and from the highway. Many will have to travel in the opposite direction to get where they want to. “Some have said that those calling to save the exits are a minority group, but 7000 signatures on a petition calling for sensible changes is significant and can’t be ignored. “I would hope that the State Minister for Main Roads would have a fair mind and listen to the

concerns of local businesses and residents, and act to save these exits,” he said. The Aussie World Garage is the only true independent service station on the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Maryborough, and owner Steve Amos is outraged. “The drastic change to our north and south bound accesses will effectively remove us from the highway and remove our ability to remain in business,” he said. “We would like to see direct access retained to allow us to keep our businesses, and the people we employ, functioning long term.” Peter Ison, from Palmview Mechanical is concerned that the changes will make it harder for his suppliers. “I will have to look at where I order parts and materials from. And most of my business comes from locals living in the area and surrounds,” he said. “If they find it too hard to get to the workshop, I couldn’t blame them for not coming back – which will mean I’ll lose my business.” Mr McArdle is keen to work with local businesses and residents to ensure their way of life is not affected. To this end, a committee was formed from the gathering to organise the ‘Save Exit 190’ campaign on behalf of the community. To show your support and keep in touch with developments, follow the ‘Save Exit 190’ Facebook page or look up the website www. exit190.com

Steve Irwin Way forest under threat With an industry expression of interest announcement made recently by the Department of Transport and Main Roads for the Bruce Highway upgrade project, including the total reconstruction and relocation of Steve Irwin Way for approximately 1.5 kilometres from the Caloundra interchange through State Forests, local groups have been galvanised into action to protect sensitive forest and wetland habitats in the area. Last Thursday, a delegation of concerned local groups and interested parties met with the Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, senior Transport and Main Roads (TMR) staff and representatives from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection and the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing to voice their concerns with the current proposal. The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) is encouraged by the meeting, according to the SCEC spokesperson Narelle McCarthy. “SCEC acknowledged the need for road safety improvements, but the proposal to destroy 24 hectares of high conservation value forest with its ecological and cultural significance is unacceptable,” said Ms McCarthy. “We should not be seeing or entertaining the revocation of a large portion of an ecologically significant forest earmarked for transition into National Park for it to be put under concrete and bitumen when alternatives are possible,” she said.
“This welcome meeting with Minister Bailey has given cause for some optimism for a better outcome than what we have seen or experienced to date. However, there are processes still at play so we remain watchful and actively engaged as this project progresses.” Also at the meeting were members of the Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest (SSIWF) group, who represent a number of local groups concerned by the roadworks. The group raised concerns that although the TMR has given assurances that the successful design and construction tender will have the option to design an interchange that avoids the forest completely, the Expressions of Interest guidelines currently do not place enough weight on environmental factors. Wayne Reid, SSIWF member and conservationist, said that they met with TMR staff several times to outline the community’s concerns, but now that they have met with the Minister there can be

no ambiguity about what the community wants. “It's imperative that TMR and Minister Bailey overhaul their process and the inadequate design they have inherited, and come up with a reference design for the construction proponents that avoids any impact on this rare, high value forest altogether,” exclaimed Mr Reid. “The community's request is not only to stay out of the forest, but to develop the area into an historical and cultural amenity for tourism such as at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.”

Sue Williams is a Client Service Officer located at the Maroochydore Police Station. On Sunday, August 30, she ran her first ever 10K Bridge to Brisbane at the age of 60. That in itself is extraordinary, but Sue has gone one better. She did the fun run to support and raise funds for her friend and colleague, Senior Constable Lenny Elliott. Sue crossed the finish line in a cracking time of one hour and two minutes, securing her 10th place out of the 201 females in her age group. Not only did Sue achieve great results on the bitumen, but she also raised hundreds of dollars for Lenny and his family. Another fundraising effort currently underway is a $100.00 a ticket raffle, with only 500 tickets being sold, with three amazing prizes. First prize is a fully restored 2005, FLH Harley Davison motor cycle, second prize is a clay pizza oven valued at $1000.00 and third prize is a Bunnings gift voucher valued at $500.00. There are a limited number of tickets which can be purchased at the Beerwah Police Station from Monday to Friday, from 8.00am – 4.00pm. Raffle will be drawn on November 27. On April 18, 2014 Lenny was involved in a horrific crash in which he was struck by a motorcycle whilst on-duty conducting breath testing on Steve Irwin Way, Beerwah. Lenny sustained major injuries and lost his right leg as a result of the incident. Over the past 12 months, Lenny has faced many challenges adjusting to life, including having to learn how to walk again using his prosthetic leg,
Sue Williams and SCON Lenny Elliott which placed enormous strain on his left knee resulting in further surgery. Lenny has experienced some challenges and setbacks over the year and is still adjusting. He is used to being a very active police officer, father, husband and friend. The simple things we all take for granted like taking a stroll along the beach, or kicking a ball with our children, are no longer so simple for Lenny. Any compensation Lenny may be entitled to is a long way off, and in the interim, he and his family continue to experience some hurdles. If you would like to make a donation you can do so to the following account: Bank: Commonwealth Bank of Australia, BSB: 064-420, Account Number: 0090 2690 Account Name: Maroochydore Police Station, Reference:Len Elliott
Electricity costs have RISEN 91% since 2008
The Renewable Energy Target policy analysis from ROAM Consulting reported that Australian households would pay over half a billion dollars more for power. Removing the Renewable Energy Target means more of Australia’s electricity will come from coal and increasingly expensive gas‐fired power, forcing up both power prices and emissions.
PROBLEM … you’re being “ripped off” by the electricity suppliers. Quote by John Hewson OAM, former leader of the LNP … “they've been getting away with screwing households on their electricity bills by hitting customers with almost obscene profit margins as energy retailers too.”
ANSWER … protect yourself with FREE solar energy from the sun and / or battery storage, for the next 20 years (average life of the battery).

Mary Cairncross Advisory Committee Sunshine Coast Council has renewed its commitment to community engagement at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (MCSR) with reshaped advisory panels, which will help set strategic management direction. A new ‘register of interest’ is also available so community members can find out about, and be consulted on, projects and issues important to them. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the reshaped panel would build and expand on the invaluable work of the previous committee. “Our current and past committee members are committed and passionate people and their collective contribution to conserving, enhancing and promoting these special places is enormous,” Cr McKay said. “However, a recent review of the panels highlighted an opportunity to build on this great
work by targeting expertise in critical areas.” “Council is also keen to hear from other community members who are not part of the committee about their ideas for the direction of the centres and their onsite projects via the new ‘register of interest’,” Cr McKay said. “Also, in a bid to strengthen the everyday working relationships between the Friends of Mary Caincross and council further, a formal MOU has been developed to outline how the two will work together to conserve, enhance and promote MCSR into the future.” Public donations will be retained at the site and be reinvested into special research, conservation, education, volunteer and community activities and events. Community members can express their interest by calling council on 5475 7272.

Strongman gets his kilt on Beerburrum Strongman Tim O’Shea is dusting off his kilt and heading to Nelson Bay, NSW this weekend to compete at the East Coast Highland Games championships. Better known as a strongman and power lifter, Tim also competes in this traditional Scottish sport, and although he has competed in a few invitation only events, this will be the first opportunity he has had to compete in the heavy events at a national level. Tim will be competing in nine events on the day, including heavy and light hammer throwing, 28 and 56lb weight throws for distance and height, stone putting and of course the caber toss. "I love the athleticism of throwing, and I wish I had the time to compete more, but I’m pleased

Another fake Australia Post scam Kylie Gillespie, from Mooloolah Computers, has sent another version of the fake Australia Post parcel email doing the rounds. Kylie says it’s the same as the previous one that she and Gus brought to our attention, but has a different company name and slightly different approach. To create the illusion of respectability, the scam email even has Kylie and Gus’s correct residential address. This one is supposedly letting her know that the parcel has been dispatched by ‘Purple Enterprises’ and is on the way, offering a link for Kylie to track the parcel’s delivery progress. Unfortunately, by clicking on the link, Kylie would have allowed criminal scammers to have access to her computer and possibly all
it contains and all her online activity (including banking details). She didn’t click on the link, of course, as Kylie is super-cautious and knows the warning signs. As Kylie said to us … “I guess we all just have to be vigilant and not absent minded when in our email inboxes.” Best rule of thumb is to be sceptical of any email you receive asking you to click a link, especially if it relates to something you weren’t expecting or relates to a company you have never heard of. If it does look like something you were expecting, a good suggestion is to not use the ‘click here’ button, but to go to the correct trusted website and enter in the details (customer number, tracking number, etc) you need to get the information you’re after.

Contributed by Gavin Stewart, Volunteer Community Educator Myth … I’ll always be fine, I’m blocks away from the bush. Fact … You don’t have to live in the bush to be threatened by bushfire, just close enough to be affected by burning material, embers and smoke. For Queensland residents, that can be just about anywhere. An ember attack in a bushfire can be intense, even many kilometres from a bushfire area. To assess how much of a risk you are in, you need to answer these questions: Does your area have a history of bushfires? Do you have trees and shrubs within 20 metres clearance of your house or property? Is your Bushfire Survival Plan more than one year old and tucked away in a draw or cabinet and when was the last time you saw it? Is your house built on a slope or side of a mountain? If you answered ‘yes’ to one or all of these questions, you may be at risk in the event of a bushfire. ‘Prepare, Act, Survive’ is a self-explanatory wording that describes three ways to get ready for this bushfire season. Your main priority is to ensure that you and your family are safe. During a bushfire, you and your family’s survival and safety depend on your preparations, and the decisions you make. The lives of you and your family are more important than any building. Whether your plan is to leave early or stay, you must prepare your home and property to increase their levels of resilience and your chances of survival. To help you be ready, contact a Community Volunteer Educator from one of the local Rural Fire Brigades. Environment Barung Landcare Spring is the month when glorious Richmond Birdwing Butterflies emerge from their Autumn / Winter chrysalises, and dry their wings in the warmer weather. But only a few lucky people on the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and northern New South Wales, will be fortunate enough to see them, as the butterfly is listed as 'vulnerable to extinction' and considered a rare species under the Nature Conservation Act. At the time of European settlement, the butterfly could be found from Maryborough to Grafton and west to the Great Dividing Range. Now its habitat has decreased dramatically owing to widespread clearing for farmland and the introduction of the 'Dutchman's Pipe'. The beautiful flower of the Dutchman's Pipe vine is similar to that of the butterfly’s food – the native Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine. Dutchman’s Pipe vine attracts the butterfly but its leaves are poisonous to the larvae. Aware butterfly lovers are planting the native vines to help re-establish populations of the butterflies. From the time a caterpillar emerges from its egg until the time it turns into a chrysalis (about two months), it will eat through approximately two square metres of leaves, and they will eat only the
new growth leaves. If you would like to provide habitat to help the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly to flourish and enjoy their spectacular presence around your own home, the vines are available for purchase at Barung Landcare’s Porter Street Nursery in North Maleny. The staff will be able to give advice about planting and position. A wealth of information is also available at the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network website www.richmondbirdwing.org.au

Maleny Coffee comes to Beerwah IGA Last Wednesday, Steve Maw and Adrian Lewty from Maleny Coffee were giving customers at Beerwah IGA a taste of their artisan roasted blends. The passionate coffee wholesale roasters have spent the last two and half years perfecting their brand and blends and are thrilled to now be stocked at a number of the Hinterland IGA’s. They have just launched their brand at IGA Beerwah as part of the dramatically expanded gourmet section that features local, organic and Australian made products. Their signature roast is the ‘1891’ blend (which is the year that Maleny was gazetted as a town) and it was well received by both customers and staff. Maleny Coffee roasts weekly and also offers a ‘Seasons’ single origin blend and a ‘Decaf’ option. The artisan roasters say they are also a featured stop on gourmet tours, and they offer coffee appreciation courses that explain the roasting process, methods of extraction and coffee profiles at their Teutoberg Avenue Roastery in Maleny. Baranbali Farm Dinner This Spring, historic Conondale Hall hosts the inaugural Baranbali Farm Charity Farm Dinner on Saturday, October 24. It is sure to be a charming evening of hearty food, music and country hospitality. Supporting Sunshine Coast hinterland farmers, growers and artisan food purveyors, the dinner is an opportunity to highlight the region’s hidden agricultural bounty, whilst also raising money for Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (R.D.A). The Baranbali Farm Dinner is the brainchild of Yvonne Ellis, owner of Baranbali Farm – Conondale’s premier certified organic free-range beef, pork and lamb producer. Yvonne and her family are passionate advocates for clean, sustainable agriculture and self-sufficient food production, and the Baranbali Farm Dinner aims to highlight that low food miles in our pocket of the world is not just an urban slogan but an actuality. Designed to utilise seasonal, small batch produce from Conondale, Maleny and surrounding valley farms, the menu includes local honey, cheeses, breads, dairy and organic meat and vegetables. Tickets are $85.00 per adult and available online, by phone or email, and include a multi-course meal, entertainment, donation to R.D.A and more. Tickets can be purchased through Baranbali Farm either by ordering online at www.baranbalifarm.com or emailing baranbalifarm@gmail.com or phoning 5435 0426. Mobile Computer Technician What you need to know about the Windows 10 upgrade Everyone running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 has probably noticed the Free Windows 10 upgrade offer icon down near the time on the taskbar. I have had several people enquire as to how the free upgrade will work. Quite simply, as far as Microsoft is concerned, it’s completely free and yours to keep. But there are a few things to keep in mind: • You will possibly need more than 3GB of data allowance on your internet connection to complete the upgrade. Depending on your Internet connection this could cost you a lot of money. • There is no guarantee from Microsoft as far as the software upgrade is concerned … this means if there is a problem during the upgrade process, your computer may not boot into Windows correctly, some programs may not work properly, and worse, you may lose your data permanently. • Some programs will not be compatible with Windows 10 and may require upgrade to
the latest version to function correctly, costing you money. I have been hearing people with a lot of negativity about Windows 10 … my sound doesn’t work, or this doesn’t work or my icons are missing, no picture on the screen, etc, and people are assuming this is a major problem. What you need to remember is that Windows 10 needs to download approximately 1 gigabyte of further updates after it is installed. This happens in the background and your PC will automatically restart at 3am each morning until the process is complete. Every problem I have encountered with these sort of minor issues are 100% fixable – 80% of the time onsite without taking your computer away, and for as little as $50.00.
For Just $149.00, you get: • Pickup your PC or Laptop from home or work* • Full backup of your existing HDD configuration, operating system and data. • Check for software that will not be compatible with Windows 10 and report back to you if any problems are found before continuing the upgrade. • Check hardware compatibility and suggest possible hardware upgrades** • Check for spyware, viruses and annoying programs that slow your PC or laptop down. • Upgrade your PC to Windows 10. • Drop your PC or laptop back to your home or work within 3 days of pickup. • Give you a 30 minute onsite lesson on the new Windows 10 operating system and its new features.
We are offering a special deal to get your computer upgraded by a professional in the safest possible way.
To take advantage of this special offer, give Josh a call 0413 235 829 to arrange a good time to pick up your computer.

School News Out with the old, in with the new
Scholarship for Thomas
There are lots of smart new facilities at Glasshouse Christian College, but one item that was showing the ravages of time was the Queensland flag. It was faded and a little tatty in one corner so a request for a new flag was made to the local member, Andrew Powell. On Monday, September 7, Mr Powell visited Glasshouse Christian College to present the flag at a special assembly. He addressed the upper primary students, explaining the elements on the flag and the mysterious presence of the light blue Maltese Cross. “No one really knows why the Maltese Cross was chosen,” Mr Powell said. “However, as a Queenslander, I do think it would be more appropriate if it was maroon rather than blue,” he joked. After the presentation the assembly walked over to the flag pole where the old Queensland flag was lowered and the new one raised. As if on cue, a light breeze sprung up and fluttered the new flag proudly against the blue sky.
Contributed by Michelle Lenz Last week on Parade, Mooloolah State School’s school captain and sports captain, Thomas Hayman was awarded an academic scholarship for Year 7 from the Deputy Principal of Nambour State High School, Mr Jeff Tennant, for 2016. This is an enormous honour as only three academic scholarships are awarded; each valued at $500.00 to assist with school expenses. Thomas had to submit an application detailing his academic achievements over the past two years, write an essay on why he deserves the scholarship and provide references from his teachers. Thomas’s words were, ‘I am a worthy recipient because I have outstanding results across all of the key learning areas.’ These words were true of his commitment to learning and achieving. Thomas will be formally presented with his scholarship at Nambour State High School’s awards night in November. Thomas also applied for Nambour State High’s Pinnacle Program which extends and supports children with academic excellence. Thomas was awarded a provisional place, as he has met the academic and character requirements pending the results of testing by the school in December. This is an achievement well deserved for an outstanding student that has worked hard throughout his primary school years. Well done Thomas! Mooloolah State School is proud of you.

Dancing with their dad was the highlight for the children at the Beerwah Kindy’s annual Fathers / Special Guests Night. The night was a huge success as the children took great pride to show their dads, poppy’s or special guests, their favourite Kindy experience. Throughout the night the children and their guests joined in carpentry, building with blocks, playing with manipulative toys, play dough, painting, collage, reading books, looking through the children’s portfolios, doing puzzles and playing in home corner. It was a fantastic night and some lovely memories were created. For enrollment enquiries visit the kindy website: beerwahkindy.com.au or phone 5494 6346.

I give a moo for mooloolah Give it a go and keep the heart of Mooloolah beating Moofest rocks community Organisers of the first Moofest held last weekend were pleased with the support they received with around 2000 people through the gates at the Mooloolah Reserve last Saturday. Leader of the organising committee Nat Pettingill said the ‘Kids Zone’ was a big hit, and was flat out all day. JC Epidemic – who specialise in Freestyle Motocross, Freestyle BMX and skate boarding, were also a family favourite with the crowds who were in awe of their unbelievable stunts. Awesome is the word that best describes the music which played all day long and was finished off by Famous Christian band Sons of Korah, and many stayed to enjoy, dance and sing along. “The feedback has been so positive around the community area, especially at local and surrounding schools where kids are still buzzing and telling teachers how much fun they had,” said Nat.
Smile within Yoga
The committee would like to extend its sincerest thanks to all those who supported Moofest this year and would like them to know that it would not have been possible without their generous support of time, money and material donations.

Breakfast with Cr Mckay
Nicky and Kenny Topfer from Kenny’s at Mooloolah are thrilled to welcome their new baby girl to the town. Possibly the most anticipated arrival in recent Mooloolah history - Charlee Topfer weighed a healthy 6 pound 15 oz and was born at Nambour hospital on September 2. Mother and baby are doing really well and proud dad Kenny is over the moon. This is the first child together for recently married Nicky and Kenny - who now will have their hands happily full with five children between them. “Nicky and bub are doing excellently and I’m just so stoked to have such a great family,” said Kenny.
Cr Jenny McKay’s next monthly meeting is on Thursday, October 1 at 7.00am for a 7.30am start. Contact Mooloolah Community Centre, Darryl from Mooloolah Hardware, or Cr McKay's office on 5441 8043 or email lesleigh.elmes@ sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au for further information.

Contributed by Carla Shultz The children at Goodstart Glasshouse Mountains recently had the team from Toothkind come in and give the Kindergarten and Senior Kindy children a talk about looking after their teeth. The children did very well at determining the good and bad foods for teeth. The children had turns looking into each other’s mouths wearing the masks that the dentist wears and looking at the tools that the dentist uses. The children were so excited to get a new toothbrush that they wanted to brush their teeth straight away!

Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley
Can you help? Beerwah Police investigating recent unlawful entries into a Landsborough business have released an image of a person they believe may be able to assist them with their inquiries. Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24 hours a day or call Beerwah Police on 5436 5222.
Recent Road Enforcement So far this month Beerwah Police have issued a total of 56 Traffic Infringement Notices. Thirty six of these were speeding infringements and two each were issued for failing to wear a seatbelt and driver using a mobile phone. In addition to these, there were three drink drivers and four unlicensed drivers.
Blue Light Dance Party Once again our event was a huge success with a record number attending and all went smoothly. Thanks to our volunteers who help out on the night and to the local businesses Woolworths and IGA which help with the supplies for the kiosk and to Aussie World, Big Kart Track and Australia Zoo for the door prizes. Without this support these the Blue Light events would not exist. We will be holding one more for the year, originally planned for November; however the date has been changed to December 4.
August has been a very busy month at the Visitor Information Centre. There has been a 10% increase in visitors, across the month, with the weekends particularly busy with travellers from around the globe wanting to spend time in the area and learn the history of the Glass House Mountains. To accommodate the increase in visitor numbers, we have begun to grow the number of volunteers on a shift; especially on weekends as Sunday mornings often seems the favourite time for a visit and a walk. As a team, we have recently visited the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve for a guided walk enabling us to better advise our visitors on the walk and its sights including that breathtaking view of the Glass House Mountains. What a beautiful place! It is currently under renovation at the moment, but also being sensitively handled, with minimal disruption to visitors. As part of volunteering for the Glasshouse Information Centre, we often are very lucky in the opportunities offered to us by various attractions on the Sunshine Coast. Approximately 20 volunteers attended the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery open morning with a talk from local artist, Anna Rubin. Local she may be, but her fame is widespread, and what an inspirational woman! Anna’s paintings are a delight, intricately detailed and stunning. If you are looking for something to do this weekend, why not pop into the centre - from walks to attractions, we have something for everyone. If you would like to volunteer with us, call Bev Dooley on 0417 709 157, or call into the centre for an application form.
The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information centre is located at Settler's Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains and is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 4.00pm

Full program of films on Saturday On Saturday, September 19, Maleny Film Society screens the matinee performance of Lifetime Stories on Film Festival (doors open 2.00pm) followed by an evening screening of Clouds of Sils Maria at 7.15pm (dinner from 6.00pm) at the Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street. Our Lifetime Stories features five short films (three by local film makers Jill Morris, Christine Elcoate and Jess Begun on dementia, followed by the documentary Alive Inside on the therapeutic role that music plays on memory loss. The evening show, Clouds of Sils Maria, portrays the lives of three women interwoven at various stages of life. Maria (Juliette Binoche) is offered a role in the revival of the play that launched her career 20 years ago. Only this time around, she is cast as the older woman while her previous role of the scheming manipulative younger woman is offered to rising young star Jo-Anne Ellis (Chloe Grace Moretz). Thinking that her acting career is nearly over Maria reluctantly accepts and together with her personal assistant, Valentine (Kirsten Stewart) she retreats to the Swiss Alps to prepare her lines. An impressive exploration of the female psyche is examined through this multilayered story. Dinner is catered by Wild Rocket @ Misty’s. Check the website www.malenyfilmsociety.info for details. 24

Congratulations
I would like to congratulate the organisers of ‘Moofest’ held in Mooloolah on Saturday, September 5, on such a successful day. The place was bursting with happy children and more than 2,000 people attended. It was supported by Sunshine Coast churches and was a showplace for local charities to present information about their works. A variety of food and drinks was available but no liquor. Admission was free, as were the breath taking demonstrations by BMX riders and the many forms of fun for the children. Bands and singers entertained on and off all day. The weather was most kind and it was a great family day. This could well become an annual event. Whoever mooted the idea is to be congratulated. Pam Innes Glasshouse Country Anglicans
Holy cow!
Last Saturday at the Mooloolah Recreation Ground many locals attended what they thought was a local community event, however it was actually a new-age Christian music festival. Interestingly in the lead up to the event there was no mention of religion on the aptly named ‘Moofest’ signage around the town, however on further checking of social media I did find some clues, ‘Wholesome music festival’. After attending the festival I would suggest for future reference the subtext actually meant overtly religious bias, and I would have expected that the organisers would have declared this when promoting the event. I greatly value our secular society and the inclusion and freedom of thought it allows. However, the minimum of respect for fellow human beings is not to force their beliefs on the unsuspecting folks who attended. Hopefully genuinely inclusive local events continue, as has long been the case in our lovely town. As a retired Catholic I’m immune to organised religion; however I would have appreciated the event signage having mentioned the religious bent so I wouldn’t have wasted my time on such a beautiful day. Ingrid Anderson Mooloolah
Thanks
Thank you once again Glasshouse Mountains and District for supporting our Father’s Day Raffle. It was a great success raising over $600.00 for the Glasshouse RSL Club. The winner was Audrey from Bowral in New South Wales. Our thanks must also go to Mitre 10 for their kind donation. Also to IGA for their support of the Club all this year and to our volunteer ticket sellers without whom we wouldn’t survive. Once again thank you all very much. John Cruickshank Raffle Co-ordinator
Legacy thanks
Thank you to the Glasshouse Country district for their wonderful support they gave during Legacy Week, both financially and through assistance. A special thanks to the management, staff and patrons from Club Glass House for their generous donations, it was magnificent. In particular to Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House and the travelling public, thank you. Mary Southern, President Glass House Legacy
Thanks to our Ambos
I would like to thank the staff of the Beerwah Ambulance Station. My sevenyear-old son was choking on Saturday night and the Ambulance came quickly and helped my son. The officer had actually just finished his shift and was about to head home but responded when the call came. It was of great comfort to hear the siren as it got closer. A big thanks to all the Ambulance staff at Beerwah. David Terrey Beerwah

In the Garden with Brownie
Jobs for the yard in September What a difference a month makes. This time in August we were shivering in the mornings, wearing jumpers at midday, and lighting the fire before dusk. Now it’s shorts and thongs at breakfast, ceiling fans set to level two at lunch and the extra blanket is back in the linen cupboard. Similarly, you will need to adjust what you are doing in the garden for the impending Spring temperatures and rainfall (hopefully). • Prune young native shrubs as they grow, meaning they’ll grow bushy with more flowers. • Grow any herbs now – except for basil (it’s too early) and coriander (it’s too late). • Take poinsettia cuttings to strike and give away as Christmas presents. • Watch out for aphids on your roses and citrus. Remove them by hand, using a blast from the hose or spraying with an insecticide. • Recent rains mean the grass will start to grow more quickly. Increase the mowing frequency and lower the mower blades. • Mulch your gardens to keep in the soil moisture following the recent rains. • Plant a couple of chokos along a fence or near a shed to cover them over. An added bonus is the chokos – best picked about the size of a duck egg.
• Dig up and divide canna lilies. Water them in well with a seaweed solution. • Throw some gypsum over your lawn to open up the soil, allowing the water to penetrate deeper. • Spray your flowering mangoes with Mancozeb to prevent the disease anthracnose. • Test the pH of your soil to make sure it’s the right acidity or alkalinity for your plants. Take corrective action as required. Vegetables Plant carrot, choko, zucchini, sweet potato, cucumber, eggplant, beans, lettuce, radish, spring onion, squash, tomato, beetroot, capsicum, kohlrabi, okra, pumpkin, rockmelon, rosella, silver beet, sweet corn, and watermelon. Flowers Plant alyssum, dianthus, bedding begonia, cosmos, marigold, boronia, salvia, petunia, aster, amaranthus, celosia, gomphrena, phlox, portulaca, sunflower, torenia and zinnia, ageratum, gloxinia, aurora daisy, impatiens, calendula, californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, coleus, dahlia, everlasting daisy, gaillardia, verbena, gazania, gerbera, kangaroo paw, nasturtium, rudbeckia and snapdragon.

Climbing Orchid
Plant of the Month
Erythrorchis cassythoides Our recent sightings of a couple of these orchids prompted me to write this species up as plant of the month. An unusual plant even for an orchid, it is rarely seen unless you are looking for it and are bush walking at the time of flowering, which is August/ September. The Climbing Orchid is leafless, and has a dark almost black stem which can reach great heights by attaching to tree trunks by adventitious roots. Plants are usually found in well vegetated areas, with the flowers appearing on the upper part of the stem where light is stronger. The yellow brown flowers are often difficult to find, though the lovely perfume can announce their presence. The Climbing Orchid is a Saprophyte which means that it feeds on dead or decaying organic matter similar to fungi.

Fr Craig Moody - Glasshouse Country Anglican Church The Anglican Church, and many other denominations around the world, has several ‘feasts’ or celebrations or remembrances of the life of Mary, Mother of the Lord. These are built into the life of the Church as a part of the Church’s annual calendar on the same dates every year. For example the Visitation of Mary to her Cousin Elizabeth who was pregnant with John the Baptist is kept on May 31 each year. This is described in Saint Luke’s Gospel in Chapter 2 verses 39-57. A further two of these annual celebrations of Mary have taken place in the last month. Over the past 26 years of full time ordained ministry and 61 years of being a Christian (in the Anglican tradition) I have been in parishes where there are large expensive statues of Mary and I have been in parishes where none of the set annual celebrations are mentioned – in fact they are studiously ignored. This reflects the world wide mixture of expressions of the Christian faith. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

SEPTEMBER 16 2015
Peachester: 9am 3rd Sunday HC - Prayer each Tues 4.30pm
This brings me to a joke. Two Anglicans died and went to Heaven (don’t start laughing, there is more to this joke!). One was an arch Anglo Catholic, more Catholic than the Vatican, whist the other was extremely Protestant. They were two ends of the spectrum. When they arrived in Heaven, the Anglo Catholic rushed up to Mary and fell on his knees at her feet. She stood him up, turned him around walked him over to Jesus and said, “I want you to meet my son, Jesus.” The Protestant arrived and rushed up to Jesus and fell on his knees at his feet. Jesus stood him up and walked him over to Mary and said, “I want you to meet my mother, Mary.” The point being made here is about balance. The problem with forgetting Mary is that we can easily forget the humanity of Jesus and entirely focus on his divinity. Mary reminds us that Jesus had nappies that needed changing, that he needed to learn to speak and behave politely. He needed a family home in which to learn to feed himself with a spoon, drink from a cup, get dressed tidily, learn his scriptures and everything else. I pray that you find in Jesus a fellow human traveller who understands your daily life with all its challenges and joys. Mary taught him how to live his journey, for which we are Eternally grateful.

Sport Grand final winners!
Contributed by Vanessa Tomokino On Saturday, September 12, Beerwah Bulldogs U12 White competed against Caloundra in the Grand Finals of the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby League, at Nambour. Excellent team work and strong skills saw them come through as winners 28 – 10. The team was unbeaten throughout the rounds and became Minor Premiers for 2015. They had an excellent season with only one loss in the semi-finals against Caloundra, which saw them competing the following week to make the Grand Finals. Many thanks to our sponsors - Roy’s Earthmoving & Plant Hire, A-Grade Maintenance, Barry Family Butchers, Show Respect and Matilda Fruit Barn. We couldn’t have done it without our coach, team staff, parents and always loyal supporters! Bring on 2016! Up the Doggies!

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
A penny for your thoughts A young Scottish lad and lass were sitting on a low stone wall, holding hands, gazing out over the loch. The girl looked at the boy and said, "a penny for your thoughts, Angus." "Well, uh, I was thinkin... perhaps it's aboot time for a wee kiss." The girl blushed, then leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. The two turned once again to gaze out over the loch. Minutes passed and the girl asked the same question. "Perhaps it's aboot time for a wee cuddle." The girl blushed, and then cuddled him. And the two again gazed out over the loch. After a while, she asked again. "Perhaps
its aboot time you let me put my hand on your leg." The girl blushed, then took his hand and put it on her knee. The girl spoke again "another penny for your thoughts?" The young man glanced down with a furled brow. "Well, noo," he said, “my thoughts are a wee bit more serious this time.” "Really?" said the lass. "Aye," said the lad. The girl looked away in shyness, began to blush, and bit her lip in anticipation of the ultimate request. Then he said, "Dae ye nae think it's aboot time ye paid me the first three pennies?" Week beginning 16/09/2015 CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This Mercury retrograde period from September 17 to October 10 means that you should not push too hard with your objectives over the next three weeks. It would be better to take this time to clarify personal and professional aims now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Two major planetary disturbances will separate you from the wheat and the chaff! Mercury retrogrades in Libra, bringing three weeks of stalls to matters of travel and law. Watch carefully written communications. Saturn in Sagittarius benefits teaching. PISCES February 20 – March 20 You will enthusiastically respond to a close friend’s suggestions with happy results. The next three weeks, under Mercury retrograde, are ideal for reviewing personal and business relationships. You should get as much as you give! Review accounts and receipts. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Don’t put your faith in false illusions, pay attention to any misunderstandings. The reason for this is that errors occur as Mercury retrogrades until October 10. The best energy output is for fixing or refurbishing anything. Avoid any distractions.
TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Mercury now begins a three week retrograde period. This is a time that past- work mistakes might catch up to you. Take this as a reminder for the next three weeks to be more organised. Write down your appointments and double check details each day. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Now that Mercury retrogrades until October 10, it will make you more concerned about a creative project, or a love interest. With Saturn entering Sagittarius, serious relationships require time to firm up. Watch for agitated moods over money issues. CANCERJune 22 – July 22 The planet Mercury goes retrograde in your fourth sector, so for the next three weeks you will be revisiting issues concerning home and family. Avoid money and any potential touchy subjects until after October 10. Don’t waste time on infeasible projects. LEO July 23 – August 22 Friends who have broken away in the past for more freedom are likely to return, refreshed and happy to see you in this Mercury retrograde period. This will last until October 10, but don’t fall for a tempting inflated financial deal! Linger longer over dinners.

Your Stars with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Mercury signals you should go with the flow when money, resources, career or self-esteem is an issue. Therefore don’t let ego set the pace over the next three weeks. A great time to do an inventory and clean up your filing systems. Neighbours bring local news. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Mercury will be in your sign as it retrogrades, bringing a slow down to your plans or career. Expect misunderstandings. Don’t burn up personal energy that doesn’t go anywhere. Now that Saturn enters Sagittarius, communications become more serious now. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You may be tempted to take a chance with your work, or with your health. This is not the time however to experiment as the risks won’t be worth it since Mercury goes retrograde for three weeks. Most of your hunches are insightful and some may be profitable. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Mercury retrogrades through the sign of Libra and won’t go direct until October 10. Saturn enters your sign calling for personal restructure and responsibility under this retrograde period. Watch out for misplaced items or ideals. Just regenerate yourself now.
