Hi Everyone With the announcement last Saturday night that someone had been charged with the murder of Daniel Morcombe there has been a huge outpouring of emotion for the Morcombe family from across the nation and specifically on the Sunshine Coast. Over the years as the media has followed the story, many of us have wondered how the Morecombes' continued to battle on and stay in the public eye to keep the profile of Daniel’s case always present. Even just last week, almost eight years on from Daniel’s disappearance, Bruce and Denise were at the Beerwah Library presenting a talk and reminding parents to keep their kids safe. On Sunday morning when Bruce and Denise fronted the media from their home in Palmwoods (as someone who works in the

media) I found it both gripping and desperately hard to watch. It was so heart wrenching knowing that they are now closer to their final goal of finding Daniel, but faced with the horrible realisation that there is no longer any glimmer of hope (no matter how small) that Daniel would return home alive. Bruce told the assembled media that the person who is responsible picked on the wrong family – we would never give up, and after seeing the way they have lived their lives since that fateful day they have shown a determination that has been nothing short of astounding. Help needed for Mooloolah Public Hall If a community is made up of its residents then the local Hall is the community’s heart, where many gatherings, events, dances, meetings and more are held. Mooloolah Public Hall on Bray Road officially opened in 1905 with a dance and is a beautiful, iconic building that holds many of Mooloolah’s memories. However, a building can’t run itself; behind the scenes is a small group of wonderful volunteers. They have been involved in running the Hall for between 10 and 20 years each. While a big thank you is certainly welcome what the committee needs now is some extra help. “What the Hall really needs is some younger energy, some new members and some fresh enthusiasm,” said Bev Smith, Secretary. “We’re regularly asked, why doesn’t the Hall hold regular dances or bingo or trivia nights, but the answer to that is because of the lack of membership. We need more Hall members; we need members of the community to show an interest in the hall.” Bev said the best reason to be involved would be town pride. “The Hall represents over 100 years of town history, and it belongs to the community, so it is our responsibility to preserve it for future generations,” she said.

If no one steps forward to help soon the current committee will be worried, according to Bev. “Sooner or later the people now on the committee would have to step down, if there isn’t anyone there to run it, what will happen to the hall? “Mr Thomas Hall donated the land to be held in trust for the people of Mooloolah and districts and the Hall remains that way today. And that’s why it’s a community Hall, it’s not a council hall or anything else, it belongs to the community,” she said. Meetings are just once a month at 4.00pm and last less than an hour. (The committee will consider changing the time in future if required). Their Annual General Meeting is on Thursday, September, 8, also at 4.00pm. Everyone is welcome to attend to show their support for the Hall and hopefully lend a hand to ensure the Halls continuing important role in the community. “This is your town Hall, it was built by the people for the people and I’d like to think that people could take an interest and come along,” Bev said. There are a few sports around that are definitely not for the faint-hearted - Freestyle Motocross is one of those yet Peachester resident, Cameron Hermansen, 20, couldn’t imagine doing anything else. This is despite the numerous injuries he has suffered through his three and a half years in the sport – these include a broken wrist, collar bones, damaged knees, ankles, hip, shoulders and many concussions. “Racing just didn’t appeal to me. I liked jumping big jumps, started doing tricks and just went from there,” Cam said. Freestyle Motocross is basically jumping a ramp and doing the best trick you possibly can while you’re in the air. The tricks have intriguing names such as rulers, backflips, holy grabs, jackhammers and seat grabs. Riding his Suzuki RM250, Cam dedicates as much time as he can to the sport. His talent and commitment saw him invited to this year’s Australian Underground FMX Championships, which is held over four states, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, over five months. Unfortunately in July disaster struck on Cam’s very first practise jump to test the ramp. It was wet from morning dew, and his wheel spun on the ramp causing him to land short. He broke the ball off the shoulder end of his humerus bone and needed a plate and eight screws inserted. “I was pretty bummed, just to let myself down and my sponsors. I’d been working pretty hard to get my tricks good, so I was a bit devastated,” he said.

I’ve been working pretty hard trying to get my shoulder back to being strong again, just with physio and swimming and stuff.” Inspiring him during his recuperation has been his love of riding. “Since I’ve been off my bike I’ve missed it more than ever. I’m keen to get back into it again,” he said. His biggest achievement during his career has been mastering the backflip this year. He also enjoys being able to ride at various shows, including Monster Truck Shows. He’s now looking forward to competing in the last two rounds of the AUFMX Championships, where his goal is to “stay safe and have fun.” Cameron is also grateful for all the support he receives. “I’d like to thank my sponsors Greef Industries and Tiger Racing,” he said. If you would like to see Cameron perform he hopes to join his co-riders for a display at the Beerwah Charity Sports Day at the Beerwah Sportsground on Saturday, August 27. This will be a first for Beerwah to have such a display of aerial tricks and Cam is looking forward to it with eager anticipation.

Drop Bears in the Glasshouse Mountains? The Glasshouse Mountains are many things to many people. To Brisbane film maker Lennard Smith, 21, the mountains were a perfect location for his 30 minute short film ‘Drop Bear’.

The ‘drop bear’, a fictitious Australian creature, first piqued Lennard’s interest over a year ago. “The drop bear is almost part of our culture; something that most Australians relate to in one way or another – whether it’s sharing childhood camping stories, pranking tourists or just poking fun,” Lennard said. “Whilst writing the script, I came across a Facebook page for ‘Drop Bears’ that had a staggering 114,000 fans at the time.” He began writing the script in August last year and finished just four months later. He then found locations and cast the film, which includes Kelsie McDonald who recently won the Best Actress Award at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival 2011. “And so began the exciting process of production! Our shoot began at a lovely camping ground just outside of Woodford, Neurum Creek Bush Retreat, across two, three-day weekends. The owners kindly sponsored the film, and were fantastic hosts,” Lennard said. Drop Bear follows a group of students on a school camp out in the bush including Adam an adventurous young teenager who loves the thrill of breaking the rules. With his fearlessness to explore, he stumbles across a mystery never proven before – however he’s not the only one to discover it.

“My aim for the film is to distribute online. Since the trailer was uploaded eight weeks ago it has received 25,000 views. I’m very excited about the upcoming release and have been extremely grateful to everyone who has played a part in helping bring my idea to the screen,” he said. As well as filming at Glasshouse Mountains, other locations included Buderim and Brisbane. “The various shoots have been a challenge, but have been a rewarding experience and worth it for all the footage we’ve got. I can assure you it will be a fantastic film,” he said. The film is currently in post-production and Lennard hopes to have a release date later this year.

Stacey paints America

When we last spoke to Stacey Bentley, 16, from Landsborough, she was heading to America to compete in the Paint Horse Youth World Games at Fort Worth Texas in 2010. With the challenge facing all riders to compete using an unknown horse, Stacey did herself and her country proud by achieving two Reserve World Championships (2nd) for showmanship and barrel racing. Her Australian team came fifth overall. “That was the happiest moment of my life pretty much and my horse riding career. I don’t feel like I could have done any better,” Stacey said. The sport of paint horse riding is to show exceptional horsemanship of English and Western based equestrian events with a registered paint horse. A paint horse must have white patches on its markings.

Since Fort Worth, Stacey has had exciting news, her previous horse is in foal and Stacey is now riding a new horse, Charley. “I’ve broken him in myself,” Stacey explains, “so I’ve been training him. Most people send their horses off to paid trainers, professional trainers, but I’ve been doing all that work myself.” Stacey recently competed at the Queensland Championships from July 18 to 24 at Caboolture. Even though Charley had been sick prior to the event and is still a young horse, Stacey won High Point Senior Youth and High Point Overall Youth. “I was really surprised when my name was called out for the winner,” Stacey said. “Now I’m feeling like I really want to get Year 12 out of the way so I can start riding him so much more. Really put some work into him to get him up to the level

where he could be at. I’ve reached the point where I don’t have anything to prove, it’s all smooth sailing from here and having fun.” It’s clear Stacey has many options open to her when she graduates from Beerwah High School, including an offer to go back to America. “One of the trainers has invited me to go back over and work with her whenever I would like, so that’s an option I’m considering,” she said.

Fun for kids at Charity Sports Special events for children have always been a feature at the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival. All the old favourites are on the program this year for the 40th sports day, Saturday, August 27at the Beerwah Sports Ground. The horse events include a junior ring program and special classes for under eights. One of the highlights every year is the horse and rider fancy dress class where we always see a spectacular array of costumes. Horses have been dressed as cows, zebras or giraffes, and riders often represent characters as diverse as brides, ballet dancers and bushrangers! Old-fashioned novelty athletics are another crowd favourite. The three-legged races, sack races, and wheelbarrow race are always popular. Then there is egg throwing for kids and adults, and the mums can compete in the Ladies’ Broom Throwing Competition.

Cancer Council mascot Sid the Seagull will arrive about 10.00am with free sample bags for the first 100 kids. The Croc Cruiser from Australia Zoo will also be there from 10.00am with activities for children. The animal nursery this year is provided by Sunshine Coast Party Ponies, and entry is free. There will also be face painting by students from Beerwah High School Interact Club. Bring your pets along for the pet parade at 12.00noon. There are numerous categories, with most pets winning prizes, and the fancy dress section always attracts some interesting entries. Fr George Henry, Br John Stevenson OGS and Daniel Gullotta (OGS Companion) On August 6, in the peaceful and scenic surrounds of the Landsbrough Anglican Rectory, around 30 people assembled for a retreat and reflection day led by Fr George Henry (Kilcoy/ Woodford Anglican Parish), Br John Stevenson OGS, and OGS Companion Daniel Gullotta. Beginning with a Festive Mass in honour of Blessed Nicholas Ferrar, reflection focused on the Seven Notes of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd and their application for everyday Christian life. The Seven Notes, inspired by the example and witness of Blessed Nicholas Ferrar, are one of the central documents for life in the Oratory. They are Fellowship, Liberty, Stewardship, Labour of Mind, the Love that makes for Peace, Discipline, and Joy. Each session began with Prayer and Taize worship, entering into a reflection given by one of the leaders. Partakers commented on how wonderful and thought provoking it was to have reflections from three different generations of Christians (Baby Boomer, Gen X and Gen Y).

Kids help hope bloom this Daffodil Day The students and school community at Landsborough State Primary School will proudly support Cancer Council Queensland’s vision for a cancer-free future this Daffodil Day. For the 10th year, staff, students and the school community will support Daffodil Day on Friday, August 26. Landsborough State Primary School Teacher, Irene Faulkner, rallies the school and students to support Daffodil Day each year. “All of our students get involved with Daffodil Day, they love selling the merchandise to our wonderful school community of parents, grandparents and volunteers,” she said. “The support we receive for Cancer Council Queensland is wonderful. Last year we raised around $1,000, which is tremendous for a small school of around 300 students. “Our school community are absolutely wonderful and they come back each year to buy the fresh daffodils, Dougal Bears and other Daffodil Day merchandise including pens, pins, ribbons and wrist bands to support the Cancer Council. “Daffodil Day is also a great initiative for our students because they love knowing that this is a way to help make a difference for people who have been affected by cancer. “We have past and present family and staff members who have undergone, or are currently undergoing cancer treatments, and we remember those who have lost their battle with cancer, so it’s a cause very close to all of our hearts.” Fundraising Co-ordinator at Cancer Council Queensland, Jodi Durkin, thanked Landsborough State Primary School for their support for Daffodil Day. “Every dollar raised from volunteers like Landsborough State Primary School for Daffodil

Skipping for funds On Friday, June 10, four schools from the Glasshouse Coalition of Schools joined forces with Maroochydore and Pacific Paradise State School to participate in a ‘Skip for SCIPS Day’ Skip-a-thon to raise money and awareness of the Supporting Children in Primary Schools (SCIPS) program. SCIPS connects children and families with relevant community resources and professional services to help them overcome issues that are resulting in learning or schooling difficulties. Students’ sponsorship efforts were rewarded with tuckshop vouchers and tickets in a raffle for some great prizes. The raffle draw took place at Landsborough State School on Tuesday, August 2,

with SCIPS Facilitator, Beccy Hyde, and Behaviour Support Consultant for the Glasshouse Coalition of Schools, John Mayes, and representatives from the participating Glasshouse primary schools (Beerburrum, Beerwah, Elimbah and Landsborough) in attendance. First prize, a mountain bike, went to T. Scoda (Maroochydore SS); M. Hooke (Beerwah SS) won second prize, a Wii resort console; and K. Reavley (Beerburrum SS) received third prize, a portable dvd player. Congratulations to the lucky winners and all the participants. Thank you to everyone for your support and generous donations.

Japanese students visit GCCC for a fair dinkum experience Contributed by Sandy Johnson Glasshouse Country Christian College has welcomed a group of 24 Japanese students from the city of Koshigaya for a two week study visit. Koshigaya is almost 60 times the size of Beerwah so it was a real eye-opener for the 16-year-old Japanese students. The Japanese students enjoyed the quintessential Beerwah experience of seeing kangaroos on the GCCC oval every morning and afternoon and loved the relaxed friendliness of the Australian students. Even though the Koshigaya students loved our wildlife, their favourite experience was one we take for granted every day. The teenagers were absolutely blown away to see the stars in the sky! Most of them had never seen stars because their city lights are so bright. Beerwah put on a good show with clear skies most nights and even a spattering of shooting stars just to show off. Although the visitors had English classes each morning, in the afternoon they went to integrated classes with their Australian buddies. GCCC students were treated to calligraphy and origami lessons and they in turn taught the Japanese students how to say “G’day mate, ‘owyagoin?” with just the right Aussie twang.

On their last day at GCCC, the Koshigaya students put on a concert. Demonstrations of Japanese toys and games were followed by a really cute dance by some of the girls dressed up in Pokeman style costumes. The final act was a traditional Japanese fishing dance which culminated in Japanese and Aussies students dancing and singing together. There were many tears during the final goodbyes but the friendships will remain.

Peachester kids with green thumbs Students at Peachester have been growing fantastic produce and are excited about their school applying for a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Grant so they can learn more about preparing and sharing the fresh produce they grow. "I’m looking forward to eating lots of beans," says Kayla. "As long as the brush turkeys don’t eat our seedlings," replied Zoe.

Principal Rosemary Hodder said "only 28 schools across Queensland will be successful and we want to be one of them!" Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden schools are changing the way children approach and think about food. All around the country, children are enthusiastically getting their hands dirty and learning how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh seasonal food. The school needs lots of help to design and construct their kitchen and enlarge their vegetable gardens. If you are willing to help out with time and ideas, please come to our information session on Tuesday, August 23 at 9.00am. We are looking for help with design and construction of our kitchen, working with children and teachers in the vegetable gardens and also kitchen lessons and advice on how to grow even better fruit and vegetables. Rhonda James “Have you got a Will?” I asked my two youngest sisters as we sat one day enjoying a coffee. It was a conversation my two sisters never liked having with me. Suddenly, one sister was lost in thought as to who would look after her daughter while my other sister was thinking about her business. A business has to be run in such a way that anyone could walk in and keep it running efficiently which means ensuring it remains profitable. Community Group Updates Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club Contributed by Dr Michael Whiticker

The club is held every second Thursday at the Glasshouse Sport Club, and last week I was reminded that the gift of music is truly something special. But it is not just the ability to make music that enriches one’s life, being able to enjoy others making music is also a gift. One of the Muso Club regulars – Clive, asked if his severely disabled 20-year-old son Andrew could perform for a couple of minutes. I was pleased to be able to offer him the stage and a few minutes in the little bit of limelight that we can offer. And what a performance he provided – simple but rhythmically vital, subtly varied, and delivered with a total love of the instrument in his hand. I am sure I was not alone in feeling privileged to have him share a few minutes of his music with us, and I do hope he graces us again with his presence. Later in the evening a newcomer – Mick Shipley, got up to sing a few songs. He was a little nervous, but he had brought along impeccably prepared music, so as accompanists we were able to give our best to his performance. He sung wonderfully and, as he had apparently only taken up singing at the age of 60, I wish him the best in his new found career and hope we see him again at the Musos Club. There is another who provides inspiration for me on a regular basis, and who I am sure won’t mind being used as an example of the wonder and beauty of music. My colleague Paul has had a few setbacks in life, having lost a leg as a child and being deaf in one ear. Suffering severe depression during his working life, a couple of broken marriages, and addictions to nicotine and alcohol, hasn’t helped his lot in life, and his dependence on the Carers' pension to put food on the table is not a brilliant career move for a 60 year old, but a happier and more positive person I have rarely come across. It may be Sue, his lovely wife of 12 years who gives him most cause for happiness today, but it might also be having music in his life, as once Paul gets on stage he simply burns with the guitar in his hand. His performance this last week was uplifting and a lesson to us all that there are some Brian performs things that money simply can’t buy.

Thank you to Embracia in Glasshouse Country Beerwah for giving the residents such a lovely time. My mum moved in about five months ago and from day one she loved it. The staff are all so caring and happy. Nothing seems to be a trouble to them. Last week they had ‘Ekka Week’ with lots of entertainment. One room was done out as ‘Side Show Alley’, and another as arts and crafts. One day pets came, another day vintage cars and on the Friday they finished off the week with a concert by ‘The Shining Stars’ and a great time was had by all. I am very grateful to my neighbour Brenda who told me to have a look at Eden (as it was called then). I had been looking for months to get mum in to somewhere nice and I am so grateful to Suzanne, the Director of care for accepting mum as a resident. I couldn’t believe my luck. It is piece of mind knowing mum is getting 24/7 care in a beautiful environment with beautiful staff. Thank you again. Carol Moss, Diamond Valley

The elusive Councillor

Where is she, lost in the Ranges, not Landsborough? No, not Councillor Anna Grosskreutz, but Jenny McKay, Councillor for Landsborough, where Optus mobile phone tower’s proposed site is, in a line, opposite Bucks’ Bakery, across the Railway car park, platforms one and two, a narrow lane, and just over the back fence of land leased by Savage Landscapers. Since May 23, there have been two items in GCNews by Cr Jenny McKay saying concerns could not be ignored re phone tower etc. Even an hour in person, surely could have been spared to meet and discuss Landsborough’s concerns? After petition and mail was presented to council a thank you to Cr McKay was seen on website as a late submission! Confusion? Five days are now left to object to council, via email, phone or letter, but we should not have been left to fight alone to keep Landsborough safe and clean and green. Because of ‘blanket’ protection, bats or flying foxes, appear to have multiplied into plague proportions. The recent Hendra virus infections resulting in deaths of horses and one pet dog only serve to create a public backlash to these animals. Solutions, such as culling or moving habitats, have been proposed but each meets with disapproval from the environmental lobby. Perhaps the most humane option would be to scientifically interfere with the breeding cycle. Making a generation or two of these animals infertile could reduce the numbers to a more acceptable level. Not that stupid

Are we as stupid, lazy and moronic as the government think we are? If you have pollies who go for overseas trips when they like (with family of course); have free cars, meals, cheap tours, hotels, airfares, big wages, pensions, and free mail - well they might be right. Greed starts at the top and boy are we top heavy. But it proves if you have the brain power, to fuel a two watt globe, be a pollie. Then pass laws, where a garage sale of Australia sells out our farmers, lets our trademark business go overseas, sell the land off, sell our coal cheap, iron ore, cattle, etc etc, then buy it back at big prices, and in so doing break our retail trade, fish trade etc. Then when it runs out, sell what is left for nuclear waste dumps. Which proves, what a brainless, look ahead, lot we have, the most inept pollies ever? If we let this excuse for a government go on, pity the future generations. Everyone has the right to work, home, wages, to look after the sick, old, etc. Have you ever seen a pollie living in a nursing home, or wait like us morons at a hospital? What about go looking for a job, or trying to save your home? They say they can earn more at private business, like a hot dog stand, but would they have the nouse to know which first, the frankfurt or the bun? Let’s face it, you get what you vote for, my God what a choice, the bullet or the noose. As a 77-year-old, I am disgusted at how they have brought this nation to its knees. Where have the billions or trillions gone, for our wealth? We should all be on happy street, where did it go? Don’t ask our pollies, they have trouble counting on their fingers. We should be like other countries after two terms kick them all out, and get new blood in. All in all, the parasites will go. I love this country, and I don’t like it becoming a joke. We need people with common sense and courage to lead. We know what is wrong, so let’s face it. Gloom and despair! Woe is me!

To listen to most of the mainstream media, politicians, stock market analysts, business leaders, and many 'letters to the editor' commentators, there is no good news to be had. But when I look locally, I find there is good news in the air (and it’s not just the promise of spring around the corner). There are positive things happening here which we should take note of and be pleased about. It was first noticed when we got the new Visitor Information and Interpretive Centre, a great focal point which continues to attract and serve visitors in numbers. Then we had the Glasshouse Country News relocate into finely refurbished premises, great neighbours to have in our community. Recently and currently, we have a striking 'Welcome Marker' erected at the entrance to GHM town which cleverly mimics our great Glasshouse Mountains; the new streetscape is taking shape and is looking better with each passing day. Others have sensed the change for the better and been attracted to open new businesses.

A couple of families have offered us 7 Secrets Pizza and their tasty fare and now the opening of Sunny’s on Steve Irwin Way (with yummy curries and other beaut dishes). Lots of other people are doing lots of other positive things in our area as well, if we just take the time to notice them. Now it’s up to us, the rest of the community to get behind these changes, and support them. But we need to tear our attention away from the doom and gloom from time to time, and replace our moaning with our support. Cliff Schnick Glass House Mountains

A matter of discipline

Way back when, governments questioned how much discipline was too much, for parents or schools. There are a lot of good people out there who have children and who know how much is enough. But questioning parents discipline role in some families created fear, how much, how little, or none at all? They have a sense of entitlement, they have attitude, and they know parents won’t say or discipline them, they want, they have, they do, because they can. Questioning the parent's role has created confusion for children, they eventually are so full of entitlement, and they can take, hurt or do whatever they want. Some leave home, not knowing whether they're loved or not. Discipline and saying no to wrong, and yes to good behaviours, is structure and balance. If the adults fear to discipline, the children have none. I see and hear lots of entitlement and attitude from adults, the children see that too. This is not to be confused with confidence - because it's not. The entitlement attitude has created a higher crime rate, they want, they take, they hurt, isn’t that creating anarchy? There are a lot of really lovely, responsible parents out there, who know how much is enough and who love their children. The line between them and the adults who fear to discipline, to say no to wrong and yes to good behaviours, are really contributing to undisciplined adult hood and an irresponsible next generation. In the environment of today just living is tough. Being responsible and controlling their children because they love them, is surely better than losing as adults the parent's role of being able to discipline their own? Not the child over powering the parent. I see it often, the parent doesn't know why the child left home, they live on the streets, there are dysfunctional families, confused kids, mixed messages. We need balance and structure. Good and bad, and to know the difference. Kids need to learn to buy and save for their needs, not take what they want. Dropping the drinking age has contributed to more road carnage, irresponsible driving and death is making more news than ever before. It's not the fault of the road - it wouldn’t matter if they made it bigger or wider, the driver is supposed to be in control of the machine. This is contributing to higher costs, rego, insurance and rates. Anyone would think they dropped the age to raise revenue. How to apologise

Contributed by Martine Goedhart Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Professional athletes, late-night talk show hosts, financial gurus, corporate executives, celebrities and, surprise, surprise - politicians are once again in the news for acting badly. And they’re offering apologies. Even with the best of intensions we all, at times, do or say things that fall short of our own standards and that hurt other people’s feelings. Here is a list – based on a few recent public examples - of the five most common ways how not to apologise. Blame the other person – Start by saying how sorry you are. Then shift the focus from your actions to the other person’s reactions: ‘I’m sorry that you were offended by what I did or said.’ Make it sound as if the other person’s thin skinned sensibilities, outdated notions of fairness, or failure to understand what you really meant -not your misdeeds - are the real culprits. This common ploy lets you sound like you’re apologising without requiring you to express regret. If you are clever enough, you may even get people to apologise to you. They might say, ‘I’m sorry, maybe I was overly sensitive’. Offer an excuse – If you can’t blame someone else, you can always blame other circumstances. You can always point the finger at any number of situations beyond your control: the weather, the economy, the computer, the economic crises, the stress of having too much to do. Experiencing the high life Local Year 7 students had a taste of high school life last week, with a special ‘Transition Day’ hosted by Beerwah State High School. “The change from primary school to secondary school is significant and we hope that by visiting our high school for a day, Year 7 students will gain some familiarity with the way high school operates. We hope to reduce any anxiety about attending high school and also increase student's excitement levels,” says Beerwah High teacher Mr Daniel Leftwich. Approximately 200 students from Beerwah, Elimbah, Glenview, Peachester, Beerburrum, Glass House, Mooloolah and Landsborough State Schools visited Beerwah High over three days and tried out specialist classes in science, drama, physical education, home economics and industrial technology. “On these transition days we offer learning activities that students may not have experienced before. When visiting our high school, students also enjoy meeting with former primary students who now attend Beerwah High and meeting Year 7 students from other schools,” Mr Leftwich explains. Seascape Ever thought of converting your image to black and white? Doing so can result in some striking results. ‘Seascape’ was taken at Dicky Beach 9.55am in August. Canon 5D MkII 24mm – 105mm at 32.00mm, f/11, with a shutter speed 1/60, Aperture Priority mode. Sometimes an image begs to be converted to black and white. Removing the distraction of colour can result in a dramatic interpretation of the same image. There are various methods available to convert an image to black and white using your favourite editing program. The RGB channels in your digital image can be manipulated giving more tonal control. Often these channels can be ‘pushed’ a little further

‘I was wrong.’ ‘Regrettably, things turned out not at all as we anticipated.’ Instead of ‘I regret having done things that caused so much trouble and hard feelings.’ Delay as long as possible – You may feel inclined (decent people often do) to offer an apology the moment you realise you’ve done something wrong. SENIORS’ Bronwyn Bishop attends Seniors’ Forum

Broadband for Seniors launch in Mooloolah

Shadow Minister for Seniors Bronwyn Bishop spoke to around 230 guests at the Sunshine Coast Seniors’ Forum and Expo, hosted recently by Member for Fisher Peter Slipper. Mrs Bishop spoke on a range of issues, including the value of seniors in the workforce, the power and relevance of seniors as a group in the community, the impact of the carbon tax on seniors, and other issues. It is the third visit by Mrs Bishop to the Seniors’ Forum and Expo, which was first hosted by the Fisher Seniors’ Council and Mr Slipper in 2001, with the purpose of providing senior residents of the Sunshine Coast with friendly and informal access to free information about issues that affect them. The Seniors’ Expo that accompanied the Forum this year featured 32 exhibitors, each on hand to give helpful free advice on a range of products and services of interest to seniors. “Bronwyn is a great supporter of the Sunshine Coast Seniors’ Forum, having attended three times now, and it is great that she is able to return again this year,” Mr Slipper said. “She is a hard working parliamentarian and is passionate about seniors and seniors’ issues; it has been great having her again as guest speaker at the forum.” Mr Slipper reiterated that his office was able to assist members of Fisher in matters of federal responsibility, including aged care, as well as with matters involving Centrelink, taxation, defence and veterans’ issues, immigration, Treasury, Medicare and health, trade, aviation, tourism, primary industries and the environment.

The Mooloolah Broadband for Seniors program was launched on Friday, August 5 at the Mooloolah Community Centre. Broadband For Seniors is part of the wider Australian Government initiative, ‘Making Ends Meet’ - Plan for Older Australians, People with Disabilities and Carers. Chair of the Mooloolah Valley Guests at the program launch Community Association and Centre, Alan O’Callaghan, was pleased to launch this valuable program to locals in the 55+ age category. “Mooloolah seniors, people with disabilities and their carers will be able to learn how to use a computer, how to explore information on the world wide web and how to stay in touch with friends and family online.” “The Broadband for Seniors concept is to provide a seniors-friendly environment where they can come and learn basic computer and Internet skills,” Alan said. The Mooloolah Community Centre currently has three willing tutors, Alan O’Callaghan and Renee Grant from the Centre and Gus Gillespie from Mooloolah Computers. According to government figures, only one in five Australians aged over 65 years currently use the internet. Broadband for Seniors aims to provide older Australians with access and skills with computers and the internet via free internet kiosks, such as the set-up at Mooloolah. During Seniors Week from August 20 to 28, Glass House Mitre 10 will launch a special club for older members of the community, offering a 10 per cent discount to Seniors on standard lines of gardening products. Manager Trevor McDonald said goods to be included in the discount offer include seeds, pots, potting mix, herbicides, garden fertilisers, pressure sprays, mower blades, garden ornaments and hanging baskets. Rakes, shovels, spades, secateurs and gardening gloves will also be included, as well as hoses, sprinklers and hose fittings. Our local Menshed was established following a suggestion from a community member to the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains in late 2009. They had seen a group called a ‘men’s shed’ operating in a community similar to ours. It gave retired men a place to gather after retirement. The idea was discussed at a Rotary board meeting and the approval was given to investigate the possibility of starting a group in the Glasshouse Country to service the men of the six communities. To start a project like this it would need a home as well as access to resources. The proposal was taken to a wonderful partner of the community in Community Recycling Inc. Through this partnership the Menshed was given financial support, a location for the men to gather, and tools and equipment to work with, as well as an endless supply of material to breathe new life into. The past eighteen months has seen the men engaged in projects including building toys, furniture pieces, repairing retired chain saws, lawn mowers and line trimmers with parts from two or three machines becoming one operating unit, to be sold through the weekly market at the Recycling Centre. Since the Menshed kicked off around sixty men have come along and checked out the activities. We would like to be all things to all men but with all those years of life behind them it can take a little while for the men to become comfortable. The main thing we are focusing on is men’s health issues and, as time goes by, we will endeavour to share these. The best way for local men to share in this information and some male therapy is by working in the workshop or the garden or to just sit around and have a game of 500, play a board game or wander around and have a chat. Free seniors business discount cards The Seniors Business Discount Card scheme is a free-to-join, discount scheme that offers business savings to permanent residents of Queensland aged 60 years and over. By providing discounts and special offers at participating businesses, the scheme recognises the contribution Queensland seniors make to the community. Seniors and Safer booklet A booklet called ‘Senior and Safer – Practical Tips for a Safer Home’ is a helpful resource for all householders, although it is particularly targetted at older members of the community and their families. Glasshouse Country Care You may have heard about Glasshouse Country Care’s new respite cottage, or you may know about their wonderful Day Care program for the aged and disabled, but did you know that Glasshouse Country Care offers many other wonderful services?

Respite Care Cottage Manager Ann McQuay said, “Our charter is to keep people, aged and disabled, in their own homes for as long as possible. To achieve that we have a range of services. We are about helping people in any area they need help in. We look after those who need care and their carers.” Ann said mobility is generally the first thing affected as people get older, so the two most common services people ask for first is vacuuming for women and lawn mowing for men. “What we are supplying is for people who are still completely independent in some ways but there may be an area in their life that they’re having trouble coping with.” Glasshouse Country Care is a stand-alone organisation and registered charity that receives

funding under different areas including Home and Community Care (HACC), the National Carer Respite program, and Higher Care packages which are funded by the State and Federal Governments. Currently Glasshouse Country Care has 1,000 clients ranging from those who need just a little bit of help to those who need care in the home seven days a week, supplying up to 20 hours of care a week. The Glasshouse Country Menshed was formed with a prime goal of promoting men’s health in what ever way the group is able. When planning the Glasshouse Sustainability and Garden Expo (and having had a personal encounter with prostate cancer) the Sunshine Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group was invited to man an exhibit to educate the community about prostate cancer issues. The patrons were invited to complete an expression of interest form to identify a need for a local support group. Sufficient interest to form a local group was received. We also identified that no support group existed between Brisbane and Maroochydore. As the next move to form Glasshouse Country support group the men who responded will be contacted before the end of August to set a date to hold a formation meeting. I recently attended the opening of the Glenview State School Multipurpose Hall. It was a wonderful celebration by the school with students performing recorder items as well as the 'whole of school choir' singing 'We've got the Music' Thank you to School Captains Bailey Pelgrave and Lara Waldron for making me feel welcome and for Lara taking me for a walk around the school grounds. I was also reminded of school safety whilst busy talking after the event and wandering across the parking area in the non-designated area. The lollipop ladies trained in school procedures smartly blew their whistles at us herding us back to the right pedestrian area. We are never too old to learn. Well done to the Glenview School Community and the Federal Government for funding such welcomed school facilities.

Roys Road, Beerwah – Road upgrade

Council will soon be undertaking a $650,000 project to upgrade Roys Road, Beerwah as part of their sealed road program. The first stage will involve widening Roys Road to the east, adjacent to Steve Irwin Way, for approximately 440 metres towards Burys Road. This section also includes improving the levels at the intersection in Moroney Place. This will alleviate the adverse dip that exists and leads to some vehicles scraping against the road surface. The work will include: • widening of the pavement • resurfacing of the road • new kerb and channel near Moroney Place. It is anticipated that these works will commence late August, and completion will take approximately 12 weeks. Subsequent upgrades along Roys Road will continue, in the coming years, to further improve the road linking the Bruce Highway. Gold Coast Council Shares Rapid Transit ideas with the Sunshine Coast I attended a half day workshop where the Gold Coast Rapid Transit project staff briefed councillors and staff on the journey of improving public transport on the Gold Coast through light rail, to bring long term economic and financial benefits to the region. One of the early learning’s from the Gold Coast Council was that there needed to be significant financial contributors to the project. The Gold Coast Council contributed in excess of $120 million towards a region building light rail project from Southport to Broadbeach. They have just been awarded $830 million of state and federal funding to bring this to fruition. The next steps for this region will be to establish a task force of progressive business minded people to drive this project forward on the Sunshine Coast.

The growing environment is so important to achieving the best colour in the texture within the leaf of the Vriesea varieties. Here again is an Vriesea gigantea x easy guide to working out red chestnut the light conditions you have. Bright Light – will produce a very well defined shadow showing a clean outline of your hand. Moderate Light – produces a good shadow but with fuzzy or hazy outline. Low Light – will produce an indistinct shadow and possibly no outline at all. The balance between light, ventilation and humidity also has an important part to play in the management of disease (e.g. black spot and white scale). We will have two main bromeliad groups which are being produced for the foliage colour; these Vriesea kiwi sunset are the Billbergia and

Vriesea kiwi cream the Vriesea. For now, we will continue to look at the foliar Vriesea. The Vriesea ‘Kiwi Cream’, Vriesea ‘Kiwi Sunset’ and Vriesea ‘Gigantea x Red Chestnut’, are all crossbred plants which have been bred to produce the characteristics displayed in the leaf form – a distribution of colour resembling light reflecting from the scales on a fish which change as the light angle changes. These are spectacular plants when distributed selectively among other plants in your garden. The flower is not the reason for producing these plants as you can see from the photo of the Vriesea heiroglyphica.

It grows approximately 2m x 2m and benefits from an annual prune to keep its bushy appearance and produce more flowers. It has lovely lobed foliage and

its new growth is a lovely burgundy colour. Best in full sun and a well drained situation. Remember when fertilising grevilleas to use a low phosphorus native plant fertiliser.

The girls impressed in their game last week at

Stradbroke Island when they went down 34-10. The U17 match up will see girls from Coolum, Beerwah and Bribie Island take on the experienced Bundaberg team. The Sunshine Coast will be boosted by the availability of a number of key players who were unable to make the trip to Bundaberg. Sunshine Coast Rugby League CEO, James Ward, has been impressed with the standard of football played by the girls. “We are hoping that the success of the girl’s teams this year will encourage a strong club competition next year and are hoping to get a four or six team competition in both U15 and U17 age groups” he said. The action on Saturday kicks off with Bundaberg U15 taking on Stradbroke Island, followed at 1.00pm by the Bundaberg U17’s up against the Sunshine Coast girls. The return match at Bribie Island on Thursday resulted in our Ladies again having a 46/31 win. Last Wednesday’s monthly Jackpot Triples was cancelled due to the Pennant Competition but social games of pairs and triples were played. This weekend is the last weekend of home and away games. We have 11 games at home on Saturday starting at 9.00am with the Under 12 div 2 boys, Under 8 brumbies and the Under 9 Tibberoos. Then to finish the night off we have our seniors playing Caloundra Div 2 starting at 4.00pm and Div 1 playing at 6.00pm, so come down and support both of these teams for their last game of the year. On Friday night we have our Women’s Div 1 playing Nambour Yandina at 8.30pm and our over 35’s playing Bribie at 6.30pm the bar will be open and the restaurant will be serving great food. On Saturday afternoon we will be holding our Small Sided presentation for the Under 6’s to under 11’s teams starting at 1.00pm until 5.00pm, please parents and guardians bring a water bottle as it will be hot for the children, also on the day we will be having a jumping castle, snow cones, and games for both children and adults so come prepared. Div 7 Pennant side lost to Maroochy Swan and Div 8 side lost to Kawana. Last bowl Nev came up with a wrong bias, just bad luck I guess. On Sunday the Div 7 boys had a good win over Kawana. I’m writing this after a late night of filling out the Census online. It was only a late night because I didn’t remember to do it until late but we got it done on the day like all good citizens should have. I’m just glad I didn’t have 10 people at our place that night 'cause it took a while for the five of us. I had to laugh when, after filling in the details explaining that our youngest Max was only five months old, it proceeded to ask if he needed full-time care. He’s learning how to chew things now but hasn’t quite mastered the personal hygiene stuff! I was also interested in the options to choose in the categories for our religious affiliation. Uniting, Baptist, Pentecostal… where was the good ol’ Wesleyan Methodist? I guess we are one of the others! (You know like the Jedi group!) The silly thing is many of our denominations are so similar you wouldn’t tell the difference when you walked into a weekly service. I guess it’s good to know which denominations are growing and which aren’t but wouldn’t it be great if Christians could be known more as part of the

Unfortunately, the followers of Jesus are often seen as competing with each other, more than being a part of the one mission that Christ has instigated since day one. Sure we may disagree on some minor issues about what our gatherings should look like, or how much water to use at a baptism, but let’s spend more time acknowledging what and who we have in common, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In the Glasshouse district we do have a great Minister’s Fellowship Group that regularly meets for this reason. Here’s Paul’s advice to the church in Ephesus about this, '… I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.'
