Hi Everyone... Well its official, I have now finally moved with the times and am an ‘Instagrammer’. For a while one of my lovely twenty-something nieces has very politely told me that I need to be on Instagram, so I can follow the family photos, as she doesn’t do facebook! So earlier in the year I bit the bullet and created an Instagram account and have semi-regularly checked out the cute pics of my great niece and nephews, but sadly I have only actually uploaded a couple of things. Then on Tuesday after going to a Social Media workshop put on by the Maleny Commerce, I decided it was time to get over my ‘insta-fear’, to seize the day and expand GC&M News’ social media footprint. So for my fellow ‘grammers if you have something you think our readers would enjoy make sure you tag your posts with #gcmnews so we can share them. You can follow me @editorgcmnews or the newspaper @gcmnews Hope to see you on our socials.

Local News Terry receives top award By Lea Parkes Queensland’s hospitality industry members gathered recently at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre to celebrate the State’s best at the 2018 Queensland Hospitality Association’s (QHA) Awards for Excellence. Hundreds of nominated finalists vied to win in the 43 award categories before a record crowd of more than 1150 attendees, covering the full range of the Sunshine State’s specialties and regions. The formal part of the night ended with hotel industry stalwart Terry Morrow from Landsborough Hotel, deservedly being named Hotelier of the Year. QHA Chief Executive Bernie Hogan said that when considering the candidates for this prestigious award, Terry’s contemporaries all mentioned his support and knowledge of the industry, and that he probably knows every country pub in Queensland, which is very impressive. “However, the singular aspect of Terry that puts him in a class of his own is his willingness to spend the most valuable of things with fellow publicans – his time,” Bernie said. When GC&M News caught up with Terry later in the week he still seemed a little surprised that he had taken out the award. Terry is definitely not one to ‘big note’ himself, describing how thrilled he was, how honoured and humbled he felt about receiving the award.

Terry believes that country town pubs play a vital role within a community and it is important that they are also able to support and give back to their communities. Having now run the Landsborough Pub for the past 18 years, Terry is well known and respected throughout the local area. Landsborough locals appreciate the valuable contribution that both Terry and the pub make in the local community and quite rightly can be proud of Terry’s achievement.

Spirits couldn’t be dampened By Lea Parkes Following more than twelve months of planning for the Bankfoot House 150 year celebration by Council’s Heritage Team and the Friends of Bankfoot House on Sunday, not surprisingly a bit of rain and wind wouldn’t stop them. While a few adjustments were made to the day’s program, everyone involved including the Queensland Governor, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, seemed to embrace the ‘show must go on’ approach to the day. There was definitely a wide range of fashion styles adopted on the day, from the vintage glamour of the members of the Veteran Car Club (pictured below), to the more practical attire of locals that included rain coats, Driza-Bone jackets, umbrellas and a few pairs of gumboots. Estimates put the crowd on the day at around 600 people, including quite a few decendants of the original family who owned the house … some of
Mayor Mark Jamieson keeps the Governor dry whom had travelled from interstate and overseas to be there for the day. While the rain pelted down and parts of the grounds were turned into squelching mud pits, the determination to acknowledge the pioneering spirits of the first white settlers was unwavering. For those that were a bit scared of the rain, you missed out on a great day – you can check out the photos on page 24.

Keeping your ‘i’ on development
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson believes they have changed the game for community engagement in the development process on the coast.
Speaking at the official launch of ‘Development.i’, an Australian-first application tracking system which replaces PD Online, Mayor Jamieson said they have backed a clear winner with Development.i. “This is a new platform developed by Sunshine Coast Council staff with financial support from the state government that will revolutionise the whole planning environment,” he said. “It will provide the same information (as PD Online) in a much more accessible and userfriendly way. “Importantly, it empowers our community to be informed about any development proposed or planned around them. “Excellent service is what our customers increasingly expect as a matter of course, and Development.i moves our systems from a reactive to a proactive tool.” When asked why a new platform was needed, Mayor Jamieson said it’s about accessibility and transparency. “This is about open data, it’s about transparency and enabling citizens to understand what’s happening around them and I believe we have an obligation to do that.
“As soon as something is lodged it will go up on Development.i so that anyone who is interested will be able to go in and get that information right away.”
A functionality of Development.i which is an improvement on the current system is the ability for a resident to be notified of new development applications or receive alerts when any changes are lodged for your selected development applications. Council hopes Development.i will go some way to eliminating the community’s call of ‘why didn’t we know about this development before’. “This is about ensuring people be given access to information earlier, and there is no excuse for people not having the information once they find their way to Development.i,” the Mayor said. Although the platform does make it easier to find development applications than it was using PD Online, the system provides no extra information, meaning that, depending on the type of application, many application documents remain hidden and are not made public.
OCTOBER IS FOOT HEALTH MONTH
Because of this, documents regarding private certification building applications and plumbing applications remain concealed. To create the Development.i system, Council was granted a $150,000 Innovation and Improvement Fund grant from the Queensland Government. Added to this, the platform has cost ratepayers a further $150,000 to bring it to the launch stage. But this is a small investment, according to Mayor Jamieson. “When you think about the value of development on the Sunshine Coast, this is a very modest investment in terms of getting more up-to-date, relevant information to our citizens than they were previously getting.” To find out more, an overview and a series of ‘how-to’ videos are available on the Development.i website – developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Invitation to farewell Mrs Bryers Glasshouse Christian College, Head of Primary Mrs Cheryl Bryers has announced her retirement at the end of this school year. Back in 2002, Mrs Bryers was the principal of Glasshouse Christian College (then known as Glasshouse Country Christian College). The school grew quickly under her leadership and in 2008 she handed over the principalship to Mr Mike Curtis. Since January 2008 she has performed the role of Head of Primary with approximately 660 students under her leadership. As the college grew Mrs Bryers made time to celebrate the individual children and initiated programs like ‘Cupcakes and Conversations with Mrs Bryers’ to help the students feel special and valued. One of Mrs Bryers’ favourite traditions is the practice of saying citations out loud for every single child in primary school. The child’s teacher writes about what makes that student special and then this is printed on a special gold-embossed certificate and read out at assembly with the student out the front with Mrs Bryers. These citations are so meaningful that some students ask their parents to frame them and then read them out every night before they go to bed. Mrs Bryers will be remembered by GCC families, past and present, for her wisdom, kindness and steadfast faith.
Glasshouse Christian College Head of Primary, Mrs Cheryl Bryers will retire at the end of this school year If you are a past student, parent or staff member and would like to say farewell to Mrs Bryers you are welcome to join us at a community event held at Glasshouse Christian College on Wednesday October 31 from 3.30pm to 5pm. For catering purposes, please call the college office on 5439 0033 to let us know you are attending.

Maleny community loses tireless worker
By Lea Parkes Maleny stalwart Joyce Newton passed peacefully at the Maleny Hospital last Thursday morning. Joyce, who with her husband Greg moved to Maleny in 1974, contributed much to the local community and in June this year her work was officially recognised with an Order of Australia Medal, presented by Governor Paul de Jersey AC. Joyce described the experience as a very humbling honour and said that she was happy to receive it on behalf of the hundreds of community members who have worked tirelessly to make the Maleny community a better place to live. The range of community activities that Joyce was involved in included activities from building a school/ community swimming pool and keeping it running in the black, restarting the Maleny Community Kindergarten, running the blood bank at the hospital, keeping the Maleny Guides and Playgroup going, building an Indoor Activity Centre at the high school, setting up our local Hospital Auxiliary, overseeing the soccer club transition from Churches to Maleny Rangers’ Soccer Club, to sitting on the Advisory Group of the Maleny Community Precinct. In 1999 Joyce was the recipient of Caloundra City Council’s Citizen of the Year Award and in 2016 she also received an Australia Day Award, for sport and recreation on the Sunshine Coast. Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell said Joyce’s community involvement spoke for itself, however it’s the way she influenced lives that is harder to explain.

Governor Paul de Jersey AC congratulates Joyce on receiving her OAM in June “Joyce loved to debate, to challenge, to disagree but it wasn’t about winning the argument – it was about making herself, and the person she was debating, a better person or about getting an outcome for Maleny,” he said. “She loved the ‘contest of ideas’ and I was privileged to spar with her on many occasions. “And at the end, you’d have a cuppa and a chat like there’d never been a disagreement. She’s made me a better person! “Maleny has lost a tireless advocate; my political party has lost a fierce warrior and I’ve lost a dear friend,” Mr Powell said. The family will farewell Joyce in a private service for immediate family only, and she will be laid to rest at the Witta Cemetery in due course. Joyce’s husband Greg has asked that flowers not be sent. However, if you would like to show support for Joyce please make a donation to one of the causes close to Joyce’s heart, the Maleny Hydrotherapy Pool, the Maleny Girl Guides or the Maleny LNP branch. A community wake will be held on Monday, October 22, 11am at Maleny RSL. The entire community is welcome.

Reunited after 56 years!
Hinterland couple Maree Shannon and Lex Piper recently shared a lovely story with us about how they were able to track down the son of the previous owner of their restored 1950 Vincent Rapide 1000cc motorcycle an incredible 56 years later! Using her ‘detective skills’ gained through her interest in genealogy, Maree was able to locate the son, Peter Broker, who emigrated with his family (and the bike!) to Australia in 1960 using shipping and census records. Incredibly it was an old parts’ receipt which set the quest in motion. GC&M News caught up with Maree to find out more about this heart-warming story. Q. What do you know about Peter’s family and the bike? A. Peter Brooker was born in 1950 in England and his father, Denis ‘Ned’ Brooker, purchased
Peter Brooker before leaving for a ride on his father’s bike, 56 years since he last saw it. Photo by Marie Shannon
the bike in 1958 as the second owner, when Peter was eight years old. The bike was used as the family transport as cars were expensive post-war. Dad would ride the bike with Mum as pillion, the double sidecar would carry the four children. They went on family holidays such as to Cornwell which is where the photo is taken (Mum leaning on the bike, Peter is on the far right with two of his three siblings). Q. When did the family come to Australia? A. In July 1960 the family arrived in Australia as ‘ten pound poms’. Peter remembered that apart from each bringing a suitcase they brought the bike (without the sidecar) and a piece of carpet and nothing else. They sailed on the ‘Fairsky’. The family initially lived in an immigrant hostel in Brooklyn, west of Melbourne, a settlement of Nissen huts. They lived there for several years while their father first worked in Melbourne, and then Sydney. Q. What happened to the bike after they arrived? A. His father, Denis, sold the bike in 1962 and was horrified when the purchaser said he was going to convert it to a Speedway bike. Shortly after the sale, the family moved to Sydney. Peter’s father always regretted the sale and often spoke about the day he owned a Vincent Rapide. Q. When did Lex purchase the bike and how did the hunt for the previous owners start? A. When Lex purchased the bike in Melbourne sixteen years ago, he was given some old receipts for parts purchased by Denis Brooker. The bike had spent over 20 years with one owner who had ridden the bike up to the early 1980s

The Brooker family on holiday in Cornwell in 1959. Alma Brooker is leaning on the bike, Graham Brooker (deceased) is standing in the background, Peter is on the right and Carol in the front. Photo supplied by the Brooker family then parked it in his loungeroom until 2002. Using the name on the English receipts along with the approximate date range that the bike must have arrived in Australia, I could use my genealogy skills to track the family. It wasn’t easy because the family moved to Sydney, the owners separated and Denis eventually passed away. I finally managed to find a granddaughter of Denis who then alerted the family to the news that their father’s bike was still around, had been restored and was now in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Q. When did you meet Peter for the first time? A. On Monday 24 September, Peter rode his motorbike up from Nimbin, NSW, and took a ride on his father’s bike. He said the bike holds a lot of family memories as it was a time when they were all together and holidayed in Britain before coming to Australia. Peter wrote to us recently to say that he cannot believe that he rode a Vincent, let alone the one that ‘Ned’, his father owned!

Nepalese visitors meet iconic Aussie animals
0400 668 503
In April this year, 16 Maleny High School students and eight adults went on a humanitarian trip to Nepal Orphans’ Home (NOH) in Kathmandu. They stayed with a subsidiary organisation called Volunteer Nepal that organises placements for volunteers across Nepal to work with Nepalese people with various difficulties. This includes helping orphans, the elderly and the disabled, and also providing education for the poor and helping to rebuild communities affected by earthquake. The trip highlighted the need for the travellers to continue supporting the charity by creating awareness and raising funds in Australia. They have since formed an independent committee and called it The Himaleny Connection
rentals@davidmillarrealestate.com.au
and have raised funds amongst themselves to fly six of the staff from Volunteer Nepal to visit the Blackall Range to raise local awareness about what they do and to generate support for the continued work of the centre. When called upon, Australia Zoo at Beerwah was happy to offer support and give the international visitors an opportunity to meet some iconic Australian animals. The Himaleny Connection has set themselves a goal of raising $3,000 to support the Nepal Orphans’ Home. They have already raised over $1,000 and would appreciate your support. Thank you Glasshouse Country and Maleny! Also, in this new edition we celebrate the educational value of the book. We make positive mention of how, a short talk Ivon gave to a class of year eight students from the Sunshine Beach State High School (SBSHS) had a flow-on effect. Prior to the talk, four teachers from the school visited the Visitor Information Centre at Glass House to assess the geological information available. This included the purchase of four copies of the book and resulted in a follow up visit by the teachers with their students who had to complete an assessment of the Mountains and included a field visit to Mt Ngungun. What was particularly impressive was the quality and relevance of the 20-page assignment provided to the students by the teachers. They are happy to share this assignment information as a benefit to teachers and students from other secondary colleges who have the study of earth sciences in their curriculum. This second edition of the book, printed locally by Beerwah Printing is available at a number of locations locally. If you haven’t had a chance to pick up a copy, the cost is $12.00 and can be purchased at the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre, Beerwah Newsagency, Beerwah Office Smart, Glasshouse Grind Bakery & Café, Beerburrum Post Office, Fresca Market & Café, The Lookout Café, Glasshouse Mountains Newsagency, Landsborough Museum, Rosetta Books Maleny, Maleny Visitor Information Centre and Mary Cairncross Visitor Discovery Centre.

Following on from the launch of ‘The National Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains’ book in April this year, Celebrate Glasshouse Country Inc are pleased to announce they have already needed to undertake a second print run of the book which includes updated information and photos … just in time for an ideal Christmas present for family and friends. Celebrate Glasshouse Country President Judy Tomlinson said that they appreciate all of the locals who have purchased the book and visitors to our region who have hopefully learnt more about ‘The Spiritual Heart of the Sunshine Coast’ and our amazing Glasshouse Country region through the book. In compiling this second edition, author Ivon Northage appreciated the feedback from those that have a keen interest in the Glass House Mountains and for their suggestions that have helped improve the book. “We had suggestions to provide a phonetic pronunciation for some of the more complicated mountain names and for a bit more clarity on the geology of plate tectonics and ‘hot spots’ that influenced the mountains‘ formation,” Ivon said. Also added is information on the talented cross stitch artistry by local Beerwah Artist, Ruth Collett, whose work highlights the strong aesthetic characteristics of the mountains that are appreciated by the broader community. For a limited time, those buying a copy of the book will also receive a bookmark featuring Ruth’s creative work.

Cooke Park in Maleny seems to be on its way to becoming a proper playground again. After Council demolished the aging bespoke timber adventure play equipment in 2017 and announced plans to replace it with plastic and metal off-the-shelf structures, the community rallied, describing the proposal as “ugly”, “offensive”, “soul-less” and “a horrible waste”. A group was formed, a petition was lodged and Council undertook a survey of community expectations. Now almost twelve months later, Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay last week released correspondence from the park’s project team tasked with rebuilding the playground. And the good news is that construction of something more akin to the character of Maleny is about to commence. “I am pleased to advise that the second stage works on the Cooke Park playground replacement will begin in early November 2018,” the project officer told Cr McKay. “Works are to be completed by early December 2018 (weather permitting).” From the scope of the works, the new play structure will include a custommade timber ‘fort’ with a roof, slide, climbing net, koala climbing pole, rock wall, ladder, spider climb and even something called a ‘shop front’. The equipment will complement the existing caterpillar tunnel, swings and spinner.

‘The Marriage of Figaro’ is perhaps Mozart's most well-known opera and is performed frequently in opera houses worldwide. It will be performed in a shortened version, at the Maleny Community Centre on November 9, 10 and 11, by the Maleny Singers to raise money for Rotary to donate to Live Flight Australia, and Blackall Range Care. The Maleny Singers have a reputation for outstanding performances by their many accomplished and well-known performers. In this production, the part of Figaro – the likeable rogue who thinks on his feet, and is valet to Count Almaviva, is played by Tony Glazebrook. Susanna, his quick-witted fiancee, who is the lady’s maid to the Countess, is played by Evalee Sharples. The Count, who has an eye for the young ladies, is played by Colin Dunn, and his beautiful, loving and tender Countess by a newcomer to the group, Sarah-Jane Abbott. Add to this the zany young page Cherubino, as always played by a woman, in this case, Viera Keogh. There is also the scheming Dr Bartolo, his housekeeper Marcellino, the village gossip, Don Basilio, and a drunk gardener, Antonio. One can expect to be in for an interesting performance. In this production, directed by Margaret Taylor, you will be steered through the complicated plot by means of two narrators in the form of Wendy Merefield-Ward and her husband Chris Ward. Make space in your diaries for this enjoyable show, and at the same time, support these worthwhile charities. Tickets can be pre-purchased at the Maleny Visitor Centre, via www.trybooking.com or at the door. Cherubino (Viera Keogh) and Susanna (Evalee Sharples) rehearsing a duet

Bringing Booty Back
Get ready to be dazzled, as some of South East Queensland’s favourite performers bring their sassy mix of burlesque cabaret and show-stopping harmonies to the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday October 27 at 7pm. This will be the very first time that ‘Bringing Booty Back’ 18+ burlesque cabaret will be performed at Maleny, and this extravaganza promises to be a night not to be missed. Featuring the all-female vocal powerhouse trio, The Kitty Kats (Michelle Brown, Susanne Campbell and Renae Suttie), and burlesque babe Scarlet Tinkabelle, this show promises to seduce, amaze and bedazzle. This adults-only cabaret will be a celebration of the female form through dance, costuming, striptease and even fire breathing! The theme for the night is Burlesque Boudoir and ‘Bringing Booty Back’ will have the audience loving the skin they’re in. Attendees are encouraged to dress to suit the event and to bring along dancing shoes to shimmy up a storm on the dance floor after the show. Doors open 7pm with the performance from 7.30pm-10.30pm. There will be two floor shows followed by a dance party set, and tickets are just $25 (plus a booking fee). A licenced bar is available and you can bring your own food. For tickets go to https://www.trybooking.com/UPEO and for more details call 0403 528 721 or visit www.thekittykats.com.au or head to www.facebook.com/scarlettinkabelle/

Then head along to a massive field day event with a difference hosted by Allclass (formerly David Evans Group) on Tuesday October 23 and Wednesday October 24 from 9am to 4pm at 205 Burys Road, Beerwah (Gowinta Farms). Hinterland Kids Teddy Bears spread joy to sick kids
Beerwah Kindy Open Day
A donation of 280 teddy bears to the Sunshine Coast Health Foundation, Wishlist, has brought smiles to the faces of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital’s smallest patients. Donated by home styling company, Lorraine Lea, the bears will be handed out to children in the Hospital’s paediatric wards, children who will bravely undergo treatment for a range of illnesses in the coming months. Last week the hinterland’s Lorraine Lea leader, Jodi Hamlyn-Harris along with the Coast’s Cassie Dodds, dropped in to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital’s Paediatric Outpatient Unit to surprise the kids with a very special ‘Super PJ Bear’. “We are so chuffed to be able to present the PJ Bears on behalf of Lorraine Lea,” said Jodi. Paediatric Outpatient Clinical Nurse, Sue Maclean, said the bears offer many benefits to the kids undergoing treatment at the Hospital. “There’s nothing better than seeing a smile on the kids’ faces. Often, they’re not having the best day, so these bears are a welcome distraction. And when the kids are smiling, Mum and Dad are smiling, too. Everyone is happier,” said Ms Maclean. Jodi Hamlyn-Harris, little Aria with her Mum Jade Jackson and Cassie Dodds
Little Will Field is chomping at the bit to get into Beerwah Kindy. The three-year-old has watched on as his older siblings Elizabeth and Izaiah played amongst the lush green garden settings in sensory-rich and visually-pleasing indoor and outdoor spaces and enjoyed open ended play, spontaneity, exploration, discovery, and connections with nature and other children. Will was but a twinkle in his mother’s eye when his eldest sister Lilly was at the kindy in 2014, the same year teacher Rebecca Mackintosh joined the team. When Will joins the kindy next year, Ms Mackintosh would have taught all four of the Field children. Mum Maddie Field says she first heard about Beerwah Kindy through her sister when she moved to the area and couldn’t imagine sending her children anywhere else. “I love the little community feel of it and it’s a place where everybody from the teachers to the other parents look out for each other,” she says. Ms Field says it has been amazing to see how each of her children’s kindy journeys have been so different, with the kindy teachers tailoring the learning to what the class is experiencing in their worlds at the time. Anything from pirate adventures to circus or theatre performances by the children is possible and the children thrive from it while also hitting all of the learning milestones needed to prepare them for ‘big school’. Ms Mackintosh, who is affectionately known as Miss Beccy to her class, says once a child has passed
through the kindy doors, they become part of an extended kindy family. “Having the privilege to teach siblings at kindy is like welcoming back a family member,” she says. “Will’s transition to kindy began from infancy and has continued over the years. As his older siblings have attended, Will has been there alongside them at the playdough table or digging in the sandpit. “As the saying goes, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’, and we welcome the whole family to be part of their child’s journey at kindy. Maddie’s family involvement at kindy is testament to that. This year, Elizabeth’s grandma has spent time teaching the kindy children how to hand sew, Elizabeth’s pop has brought along his bobcat and digger for the children to explore and Elizabeth’s mum, Maddie has joined in many special events and mornings at kindy.” The Beerwah Kindy has been a staple in the community for more than 50 years and will be hosting their annual Open Day on Saturday October 27 from 9.30am to 11.30am so you can come along and see the incredible facilities, meet the teachers and discover why the kindy continues to exceed all seven National Quality Standards. Meaghan Sexton-Dhmu from Nambour and I explained to those in attendance the importance of looking after your heart. As we pointed out, without a heart there is no life. The Heart Foundation is grateful for the donations that the group gave towards further research. Thank you all so very much. The Wittafest on Saturday September 15 proved a winner once again. However, this would not have been possible without the tremendous support of the community. Our entertainers on the day did a magnificent job of keeping toes tapping and our thanks go to the Historical Ukulele Club, Fritz, Craig Nankervis, Damian Barnes and John Mays. Our congratulations and thanks to the girls from Heart Space Dance Academy, Lions Club of Blackall Range and the Maleny Rotarians for their unwavering support. To all those who helped in any way our sincere thanks because without those willing volunteers the event could not happen. Lynda Burgess Witta Recreation Club
Hollow boast
I am so glad the Australian taxpayer is funding the Assistant Treasurer's exorbitant internet bill. Us mere mortals cannot even get an internet connection in Maleny. Telstra says it is unable to ensure, on the day, an ADSL connection and I am unable to get a wireless connection because my residence is situated in a valley. Our local Federal member has assured me I can get an NBN

connection, wait for it, but it won't be available until mid-2020. Meanwhile, I am dependent on obtaining an internet connection at the Maleny Library. The Morrison/Turnbull government has assured everyone that the NBN will be available to all citizens before the end of the decade. That's a hollow boast. I can't believe the hubris of this government. Roy Clogstoun Maleny

In March this year, I shared with readers about an encounter I had in Dubbo regarding the recycling of drink bottles and cans in NSW. Well, it appears that our Government has decided to follow suit. Hopefully, they have woken up to the problems NSW had and the fact that Coles and Woolworths put their drink prices up 15 cents, although the Government only return ten cents for each item and only if it is in pristine condition (this is according to the young lads we were speaking to in Dubbo). Let’s see what transpires on November 1, watch your drink prices escalate. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

change; chronic high unemployment; greater competition facing small employers (especially global); and changing values away from collectivism towards individualism. Workplace strikes involving union members are today a rarity. Unions can’t simply recruit or organise their way out of these circumstances. Since 2006, Australia’s system of workplace laws and institutions has become more centralized and controlled by the Federal government through its corporation powers, with residual non-corporate areas generally under State government jurisdiction. Outside of registered enterprise agreements, there are mandatory ‘national employment standards’ plus numerous ‘modern’ industry awards with ‘fair and just’ standards protecting young people against exploitation when they commence their first jobs at whatever age. Unions participate in award reviews aimed at maintaining award protection for union members and non-members alike. Nevertheless, despite the current Fair Work Ombudsman and Commission institutions, who would properly pursue fair and equitable work conditions for all employees if unions were not around to do so? Peter Milton Maleny
Making a connection
Phillipa Howells (GCMN letters 26/9) effectively outlined the history of trade unionism and presented a compelling case for its relevance today. She referred to declining union membership which in Australia has dropped from about 50% of the workforce in the 1970s to around 17% now. Australia was linked to the origins of England’s trade unionism via the Tolpuddle Martyrs - six men from Tolpuddle in Dorset who in 1834 were sentenced to penal imprisonment here for unlawfully swearing oaths to their agricultural friendly society. Whilst some critics contend that Australia’s unions haven’t effectively explained their achievements and got their message across, their roles and bargaining capacity have greatly diminished under external factors like structural economic changes (decline of manufacturing and growth of services); loss of big employers and stable unionised workforces; contracting out of work; redundancies from technological
Nowadays, the benefits of walking as an exercise seem to be in the news with regularity. An interesting point is the connection between walking and prevention of two of the main causes of disability and death, health problems with the heart and the brain. In order to encourage the habit, perhaps it would help to build paved paths which people living in the outskirts of our small community could use to go to town instead of taking the car every time. Another point to consider is that by having the possibility to walk instead of drive, older people unable to drive could be independent of motorized transport for their visits to town. That would help as well with keeping them in their own homes instead of having to move to an old people’s residence. As an example, Macadamia Drive, which joins Reesville and Witta to Maleny, could be one of the candidates for an upgrade. Carlos da Cunha Maleny
Should you restructure your loan? Restructuring your loan, or switching loans, can be an effective way to free up funds for renovations and other life costs, and help you better manage your finances. But how do you know when to restructure your loan? And is it always a good idea? Here, we have a quick look at what it means to restructure your loan, so you can decide if this is the way to go. There are a few reasons why you might consider restructuring a loan. If your financial situation has dramatically changed or you want to consolidate debt, restructuring may be an option. Your current interest rate might not 22
be most competitive in the market right now so you may want to look for a lower rate or lower repayments, or even change the length of your loan. Purchasing a new investment, funding a renovation, buying a new vehicle or taking a family holidy are all vaild reasons to review your current loan. Although restructuring your loan may be an attractive option, you need to think carefully about the decision. Before making the leap you should always consult your Adviser whilst considering the following. Do the fees and costs of restructuring outweigh the benefits? Even though the interest rate may be lower on another
loan, you need to calculate whether you are saving or spending more on the long run. Calculate set-up fees, as well as penalties for exiting your current loan. What are your long-term plans? Consider whether your financial situation will be consistent over the period of the loan and whether you will remain in a position to make the repayments. How flexible is the loan? If you are looking at a flexible loan, consider that a low interest rate has the potential to increase in the future. The first step is to contact your Smartline Adviser to discuss your situation and options. Your Adviser will
help you weigh up the pros and cons of restructuring your and assess whether you are eligible to make a switch. Restructuring your loan is a big decision working with Smartline's Teresa Harrison can give you the peace of mind and the assurance you need to take the next financial step.

The Wife
After nearly 40 years of marriage, Joan and Joe Castleman (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) seem to the outside world to be a perfect fit. Joe loves playing the role of the charismatic ‘Great American Novelist’ while Joan supports him through her intellect, grace and charm. Joe is nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature and it is then that the real story of their decades-long relationship begins to reveal itself. Earlier scenes from their marriage show a younger Joan sacrificing her own literary ambitions and falling into a role of compromise and self-effacement to allow Joe's giant ego to flourish. Close's performance is unforgettable. Partly set in Stockholm and directed by Bjorn Runge, ‘The Wife’ is based on the award-winning novel by Meg Wolitzer. Jane Anderson wrote the screenplay. In the Garden Peachester Horticultural Whether you can weather the weather, you old wether Society
Contributed by Patricia Bradford Last month’s meeting was held at Coral Beutel's garden on Bribie Island, which was certainly a beautiful and peaceful place to meet. Everyone was welcomed and following a cuppa and a short and informal meeting, we spent some time admiring the courtyard filled to the brim with a good variety of plants, colour, lots of potted plants, hanging baskets and a small shade house. Members then adjourned to the nearby Sandstone Point Hotel for an enjoyable seafood lunch. The next meeting will be held on Thursday October 18 from 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. New members and visitors are always welcome. For more information phone 5496 9169. Coral Beutel in her garden with club member Pam Innes
For the Birds with Spencer and Karen Shaw
Often, we get requests for plants that are good for attracting birds. Unfortunately, most people’s exposure to native plants that are good for bringing in our feathered friends is via mainstream native gardening books or TV shows which push the same small list of cultivar grevilleas, bottlebrushes and banksias. These plants are recommended whether you live in Hobart or Darwin, Sydney or Perth – which may be great in making a book marketable nationwide but takes little account of the diversity of our big country and its innumerable unique ecosystems – and let’s face it, can get a little boring after a while! Cultivar Grevillea’s, Bottlebrushes and Banksias are beautiful looking plants that are great for attracting nectar eating birds, but some of our nectar eaters are notoriously territorial (such as Noisy Myna and Rainbow Lorikeets) and will aggressively dominate your gardens. We do have many local native Grevilleas, Bottlebrushes and Banksias to supply nectar, but often missing from our gardens are the small fruit bearing plants that attract a whole range of other local birds. Fortunately for the gardener, many of these local fruit bearing plants also look great in the garden, so not only do the local wildlife get a good feed and are able to move through the landscape – you also get to choose from a great diversity of beautiful local native plants.
Well, what a wet and wild week! Here at the GC&M News office in Glass House, we bore the brunt of the ‘super cell’ storm on Monday night. The end result was sodden newspapers and a couple of equally sodden catalogue inserters (thanks Lachlan, Rachel, Jacki and Jess – you’re all champions), but luckily no tree or building damage. Others weren’t so fortunate, with trees and large branches coming down, crops farming infrastructure damaged and power outages. Since then I’ve had over 150mm of rain at my place, with other areas experiencing heavier totals. The rain brings some opportunities but also creates some problems in the garden. Mooloolah River Landcare posted a facebook reminder that it’s a great time for tree planting, as the deep soil moisture profile and follow-up showers will give them the best start in life any tree can ask for. It’s also a good time to remulch gardens, as it will trap in the moisture for when the drier weeks return and it protects your soil from any further rain erosion. One major drawback of lots of rain is nutrient leaching. So maybe this weekend you’ll need to give your gardens an application of a suitable fertiliser. The rain will have stripped out the water-soluble nutrients and your plants will suffer in the short term unless they’re fed a little. Citrus are especially susceptible to this effect, so if you do nothing else – fertilise your citrus. Leafy greens will need a boost of nitrogen, and other hungry crops like tomatoes and corn will likewise need a complete fertiliser. If you’re using a liquid fertiliser (something like Thrive), be aware that it is mostly made up of soluble nutrients, which will wash through the soil again with more showers – so you’ll need to apply them at half strength and each week rather than every three weeks. You’ll notice a variety of mushrooms and fungi starting to pop up in your mulch soon – that’s just a natural thing and don’t worry as they’re doing a good job and aren’t a sign of problems. But watch your pets and small children, as many fungi can be toxic. Hail at Dana Close, Glass House Mountains Photo contributed by Dennis Hume

Wild May
Leptospermum polygalifolium, Leptospermum polygalifolium, commonly known as Wild May or Jelly Bush is one of the many different species of Tea Tree found along the eastern coast of Australia. It is a versatile, dense shrub growing to about four metres. This hardy shrub is a valuable river bank stabiliser as it lies down in a flood and then bounces back after the flood recedes. It is popular as an ornamental with reddish new growth, small, dark green leaves and a profusion of white flowers during spring. It responds well to pruning so its dense growth and abundance of flowers make it useful either as a formal hedge or informal screen. It grows well in anything from full sun to partial shade and can be useful as a windbreak. Once established, it is frost hardy and drought tolerant. The flowers are an excellent source of pollen and nectar and in recent years Wild May has become very popular with bee keepers. It has been found that the resultant honey has very high antibacterial properties and is comparable to the highly sought after manuka honey. Everyone should have one of these adaptable shrubs growing near their house.

From the churches Having a good day? Feeling blessed or cursed? Some days we can feel that everything is against us. We just want to go back to bed and start again. On those sorts of days, we can quickly think of ourselves as living under a curse. Asking, "Why do bad things always happen to me?"
When we consider the many issues that we face - the loss of someone close, an illness, accident, unemployment, failure or hurt from another these can add up and we can begin to feel like we are no good or are being punished. When we focus on the pain and the suffering we can easily be enveloped in misery and hopelessness. However, when we shift our focus to what is good amidst the pain and suffering, we find a glimmer of hope, comfort and joy. As Christians we believe that Jesus came to bless us not curse us. The hope, comfort and joy found in Jesus Christ is revealed in many different and often unexpected ways. Sport Charity cricket game postponed
Both organisers and players involved in the Maleny charity cricket match are disappointed that the recent rainy weather has forced a match postponement. With extremely poor pitch conditions, the match that was set to be played this coming Sunday October 21, will now have to be rescheduled. The highly anticipated game of ‘pyjama cricket’ played in honour of Dr Peter Oliver, and also to raise funds for the Lung Foundation Australia, was to be played by teams representing The Maleny District Sport and Recreation Association and the Member for Glass House Andrew Powell. Following days of heavy rain, organisers have had to make the unfortunate but necessary call to put the game on hold until early next year fearing that playing in the boggy conditions could prove unsafe for players as well as risking damage to the pitch. Many Maleny locals will remember Peter and perhaps will have known of his battle with lung cancer. Peter, a non-smoker, passed away in November 2012 and unbelievably, his wife Ann, also a non-smoker, passed away from the same disease. Before Peter passed away, he made it his business to campaign against the stigma attached to fundraising for lung cancer research and for the need to find a cure – and to challenge the myth that only smokers get lung cancer. Watch this space for an announcement of the rescheduled match date, and plan to head to ‘Maleny hill’ to enjoy a game between real politicians and some very dodgy theatre types playing for the coveted Golden Thong Trophy – all for an extremely worthy cause.
Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Thursday saw a variety of games being played. It would be fair to say that there was a bit of golf and a bit of association croquet and a lot of fun had by Sally Adams, Vince and Val Carbery, Wendy Whitby, Kath Smith, Donna Manning and Bev Sockhill. We had a visit from the Lions Club on Sunday with about thirty people coming along and having a great time mostly playing golf croquet with a demonstration of Association in the later stages of the session. Some remarkable shots were played. One jump shot, from about a metre and a half
out, went to the top of the hoop and through without touching the blocking ball. The food for morning tea and lunch was also spectacular. Thank you to all those who came and helped with the setting up and running of the event. As well as that, thanks to the Lions for a session that generated a great deal of fun. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.
Maleny Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Oxenham On Wednesday, October 10, our Club held a Mixed 18 Hole Single Stableford competition with first place going to Fred Muller with 40 points, runners-up all on a count-back went to Trevor Fairley (35), Michael Radmall (35), Marileine Fox (35) and Gavin Rooney also with (35). NTPs: 8 – Anne Devane.
Another three holes have been added so why not come and play our extended 12 hole course? Attractive Gold and Silver pro-rata membership rates are also available. To book a round or enquire about membership, call 5499 9960. For more information visit our web-site at www. malenygolfclub.com.au

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, October 10: Ladies Day, 10 teams played in this month’s Jackpot Triples. The winners were Marilyn Podmore, Tony Verdonk and Ron Wilson with the lowest winning margin +6. Runners up with the 2nd lowest winning margin were Millie Freshwater, Eileen Pierce and Wendy Platt. The jackpot was -13 which wasn’t won so will remain at $600 for November, our final one for the year. Remember in the summer months morning tea is 8.30am for a 9am start. Thursday, October 11: Social, no bowls as it was washed out after 4 ends. Green fees payed can be used for your next game. Sunday, November 11 is our annual Diggers vs Civvies day. Place your name down at the club
now. $13 with one game of 18 ends starting at 1pm. The end of our year is close with both our mixed triples and four’s nominations open and will close this Thursday. We need a couple more ladies to play. These will be the final competition of 2018. On Sunday December 2, Col Allen and myself are organising a social bowls morning which will include breakfast. Open Pairs with details at the club. There will be prize money plus beer up for grabs. The Spring Carnival was in the end cancelled for the 2nd year in a row. It would have been a great couple of days. We hoped by cancelling day one, we might have been able to play the Sunday unfortunately we had to cancel that morning.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Brenda Briese On Saturday, October 6 there was no competition due to the rain. However, on Thursday October 11 we were lucky enough to get our game finished before the heavens opened. Due to the forecast there were a lot of cancellations and we had a field of 31 players. We played a Stableford in one division. Winner with a great score of 43 points was Lea Doyle from runner up Pauline Laurie 37 points and 2nd runner up Andrea Campbell 35 points. NTPs: 2 – Sue Williamson, 5 – Brenda Briese, 16 – Lea Garner (2nd shot) and 18 – Mavis Brimelow. BRD went to 33 points. The rain has been very heavy so we will have to wait and see if any games are played this week!
Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Miles Allen Last week's inclement weather meant we didn't play a lot of bowls but had time to enjoy the facilities of the club and reflect on our assets. We also hope that all those who needed the rain got some. We are indeed fortunate having such good facilities with our clubhouse and green and the volunteers and infrastructure needed to operate. The back wall of our clubhouse has recently been renovated and thanks to Dave B it looks like brand new. And with our new bar and line of drinks, more and more people are coming along to enjoy it. Our Bar Manager Bryan ensures that everything runs smoothly and that volunteers can dispense our four keg beers and new wines. It's thanks to volunteers like Dave and Bryan that we are able to offer such great facilities.
Christmas parties are being booked so if you're interested in holding your event there, come and say hello and see what we can do. This month we are holding two events for everyone to give lawn bowls a go. All ages with children are welcome, beginners or not. $10 per adult includes green fees, bowls hire, finger food and other treats. There’ll be lots of prizes during each event. And you will get the chance to sample our new wines. The dates are Friday, October 19 from 6-8pm and Saturday, October 27 from 6-8pm. Let us know you are coming via our Facebook events. Are you wondering if you’ll enjoy it when you get there? As the saying goes, ‘you’ll never never know if you don’t go’. To find the Club, go down the side of the Maleny Hotel and you’ll see us.

Just for Laughs Some good one liners?
ARIES March 21 - April 20 A shift in trends can bring a touch of discord to some friendships. The art of compromise goes far in maintaining peaceful relations. There is a success of some sort that your partner will want to celebrate. A compassionate friend is a godsend to you. Insider information requires verification before you can safely act on it. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 The Aquarius moon goes through to the weekend and replaces a steady rhythm with erratic interactions and unpredictable moods. It’s time to see this week in a drive to channel a business plan or parental activity. You can look forward to the shared joys of a family or special partner this weekend. Artistic feelings are very strong. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Let intuition guide you into taking action! Your travels can prove inspired as you cause yourself to be in the right place, with the right ideas, at the right time. Passionate emotions arise over the weekend with the Moon in Pisces. Major decisions are made on Tuesday or Wednesday with the Moon moving in the sign of Aries. CANCER June 24 - July 22 Because this week begins with the erratic Moon in the sign of Aquarius that will influence the tides and in your own body, your mood swings. If you get up very early the music of the birds and insects inspire love and poetic visions. You can keep this serene emotional flow going through any artistry, eg, painting a Mandala.

Week Beginning 17/10/18
• My boss told me to have a good day… so I went home. • The other day, my wife asked me to pass her lipstick but I accidentally passed her a glue stick. She still isn't talking to me. • When you look really closely, all mirrors look like eyeballs. • My wife told me I had to stop acting like a flamingo. So I had to put my foot down. • As I suspected, someone has been adding soil to my garden. The plot thickens.

LEO July 23 – August 22 As the Moon opens up in the Aquarius sign, this emphasises cooperation and your talents as an excellent organiser. There is a minor stroke of luck or favourable news concerning home or family. Don’t let someone who is a “downer” put a big damper on your good moods. There is a family member who speaks with conviction now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Take even small steps forward to create new goals, then enjoy the accolades that come with them. There is local news about recent paper work, and it is all positive and shores up support. The weekend sees lively energy so find a project that meets with your enthusiasm. Family dinner times fill your heart with love and gratitude. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 You may need to shift your gears early, without warning, as there are individuals wanting to steer their own independent course. That is because the Moon opens up this week in unpredictable energies of Aquarius. Then over the weekend all becomes normal, with the Moon in Pisces. All decisions are better on Tuesday or Wednesday. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 You have the strength of your mighty ruler Pluto, which rules your sign, driving your ambitions to gain rewards for your efforts. You may start off this week feeling erratic and hard to adjust to events or people. That all goes better over the weekend. If you are angry with a loved one, it’s not the time to argue, better to wait a day or so.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Not only be guided by your list of things to do, but do allow yourself the freedom to wander off the beaten track and even try something oddball. This is because the week starts favourably for you with the Moon in Aquarius. By the time you get into next week the Moon in Aries gives you a self-assertive, competitive mood. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Some of your financial affairs need attention. It would do your heart good to lend a friend some money or give some to charity. This will be because the Moon enters the charitable sign of Pisces over the weekend, allowing you time to make a donation. Taking even a small step towards a kind goal means you gain much satisfaction. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This should be a bonza week for you to start with, as the Moon is in your sign on Thursday and Friday. It feels as if you are in the driver’s seat, and that is exactly where you want to be. Rest up with your partner over the weekend, with the Moon in Pisces, and then plunge into new ideas and new projects next Tuesday for sure. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Take note that the weekend sees the Moon in your sign of Pisces. So the weekend will see you in a dreamy mood, more sympathetic, less competitive, but also vague. A classic time for meditation and visiting the sick. Your imagination evokes lyrical memories of the dear departed, and you may feel grateful for your own life to date.
