AUGUST 17 2016
Hi Everyone
W
ell there are no prizes for guessing what I will be writing about today – yes this weekend’s Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival that will be held down at the sportsground at Beerwah. Well this great family friendly day out is one that many locals have been participating in for the past 40 or so years! Yes it's hard to believe that a small group of dedicated locals bring this event together every year as a fundraiser for the Cancer Council. When the weather is on the organisers side, they raise well over $20,000.00 which isn’t bad with a gold coin for entry and the rest is made up of entry fees in the athletics, horse and show and shine events. And the purchase of the traditional country fair plates of strawberries and cream, jars of jams and pickles, plates of home baked cakes and locally grown fruit and vegetable produce. Check out the story on page 26 which will give you a better idea of the great entertainment available on the day, my personal favourite is the Shetland pony racing and the Strongman competition. Local News Charity Sports on Saturday Beerwah locals are busy putting final preparations into place as the 45th annual Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival draws near. The annual family fun day offers a wide range of activities, including horse events, athletics, photography and scarecrow competitions, musical entertainment, a super strawberry competition, a ‘Show & Shine’ competition for car enthusiasts, and even a little magic. The 2016 event will be held on Saturday, August 20 at Beerwah Sports Ground, with all profits supporting Cancer Council Queensland. Organiser Bruce Page called on the community to mark the date in their diaries. “This annual event has achieved iconic status as a project which involves the whole community,” Mr Page said. “Most local businesses provide sponsorships, while community groups and individuals assist with the overall organisation, and also provide the volunteer work force on the day.” Around 1,000 people attended the event in 2015. Mr Page said the event’s success would not be possible without the ongoing dedication of committee members, some of whom have been actively involved since the carnival’s first year. “Our committee is proud to support the efforts of Cancer Council Queensland through this local fundraising project,” he said.

Glasshouse Views resident turns 100 Family and friends recently gathered to celebrate a wonderful milestone for Glasshouse Views resident Bert Berrell who turned 100 on July 28. With a big beautiful cake donated by Beerwah Woolworths, the occasion was celebrated in style with four generations of family marking the momentous day. Staff at Glasshouse Views spent a lot of time beautifully decorating the room and tables to ensure that the family enjoyed a special afternoon with their much loved ‘Pop’. Albert Herbert Burrell (known as Bert) was born on July 28, 1916 in Goulburn NSW. He was the youngest of six children and when he was six-years-old the family moved to Queensland. The family lived in a number of places during his younger years and during this time he learned how to do the various farm chores that were required during this era. At 17 he left home to work as a farm labourer at Kilcoy followed by a stint picking bananas in Nambour. Around 1935, Bert returned to Ipswich and commenced boxing, entering many local matches and within a year of practice, he managed to gain recognition as an up and coming welterweight to watch. Now an aspiring young boxer he began his professional career fighting under the name Vince Blackburn going on to win the 1938 title of Queensland Welterweight Champion. At the ripe old age of 23, Bert decided to get out of boxing and moved to Sydney where he met his first wife Irene. Married in 1941, sadly Irene passed away three years later. Later in 1945,
Four generations celebrate Bert's 100th birthday, grandson Adam, son Jim, and great grandson Jake Bert married Joyce Venus, Irene’s younger sister. Bert went on to become a successful boilermaker and in 1983, he and Joyce returned to Queensland to live. They have three sons, Robert, Jim and Colin and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. When asked about the secret to a long life Bert replied, “Keep working.” To mark his birthday, Bert received letters from the Queen, Governor General, the PM and member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle. The day also featured a visit from his grandson Adam, son Jim and great grandson Jake.

Farewell to Mal Thompson Recently, Maleny lost one of its true characters with the passing of Malcolm (Mal) Thompson. Mal was definitely ‘old Maleny’, and many would know him and wife Margaret (Marg), as the inseparable pair who pioneered the buffalo dairy on Cookes Road at Witta. The community came together last Wednesday to celebrate a life well lived. Over 300 family, friends, neighbours, fellow rogues and colleagues shared in reminiscences of Mal at a memorial service held at the Witta Recreation Club. Mal’s cousin and life-long friend Rev John Woodley conducted the proceedings, reminding everyone that it would be a relaxed event, as Mal never dwelt too long on formalities. Mal was born on August 6, 1938 and grew up at Moore in the Brisbane Valley, and was schooled in Brisbane. Leaving at age 13 he worked on a property at Moore, and with his first wages bought a black and white mare – Comet – from which the Thompson’s stream of well-known coloured horses was descended. Mal moved to Curramore in 1955 with his family, and it wasn’t long before he caught the eye of a younger lass at the Witta dance, this being Margaret. A romance evolved with Mal accompanying Marg to her Deb Ball at Maleny, taking her to the pictures and whispering sweet nothings over long phone calls. They married in 1957, after which Mal firstly secured a Council job at Maleny, then with the Public Works Department, meaning he camped away a lot.
www.gcnews.com.au
by Greg Brown
This didn’t seem to hold them back, with Mal and Marg having five children before moving to a property at Curramore, with two more being born there, on which they were then running some of the highest producing milking goats in Queensland. Their subsequent move to the Witta property also saw two more children join the brood, but tragedy struck when their eldest son, Sean was killed. It devastated Mal. Times were tough for the Thompson’s – both personally and on the land – but they saw things through as a family and continued to establish themselves as a successful Maleny farming family. Deregulation of the dairy industry saw great upheavals, and Mal decided that a change was needed and he hatched a plan for buffalo milk after a visit to the Northern Territory. So in 2005, on a $48.00 ticket to Darwin, Mal spent $20,000 on their first buffaloes, with Markus Bucher from Maleny Cheese desperate to know when he’d get to see any milk. Over time they bought and bred more until they could stop farming dairy cows and just concentrate on their buffalo milk and meat, with the enterprise growing to become a locally-grown nationwide success story. Along the way, Mal made many friends and championed many causes, always looking to introduce innovation and advance community interests. Mal was a driving force behind the establishment of Barung Landcare, as the Landcare principles were a perfect fit with Mal’s ethics, and he practiced the Landcare approach throughout his farming career.
Picture: Lachie Millard He was also an inspiration in establishing the Maleny and Nambour High School’s agriculture sections and dairy herds. He believed that it was his responsibility to assist children to be able to achieve. Most of all, Mal adored his children and grandchildren. He took much delight in following their antics and most likely secretly delighted in their every mischief. According to Marg, Mal had expressed that he always wanted to go with his boots on, and to his word he got his wish, but as Marg said, at least he went doing what he loved. A number of people spoke about their connections with Mal … neighbour Sid Cooke, Barung President Lindsay Kruger, friend Tom Hume, Chairman of the MRCCC Ian Mackay, landholder Marek Malter … but I think Mal would have been most impressed by the little grandson who spoke softly about what his grandad meant to him. One comment summed up pretty well how people are feeling about the passing of Mal … “Mal hasn’t really gone anywhere, he’ll always be in our hearts … telling us what to do.”

Overcoming the Ultra Beast When Mount Mellum local Graham Reeks read the average life expectancy of someone with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in Australia is 38 he decided to try and do his bit to help out by raising awareness and funds to complete research. Graham said CF is particularly poignant as his 11-year old nephew in England, Ocean, has this genetic disorder, where sufferers produce too much mucus, which can lead to infections. Repeated infections and blockages can cause irreversible lung damage and death,” he said. A friend, Dave Sked who participates in obstacle racing, mentioned the Spartan Ultra Beast race was coming to Queensland on September 3 which Graham thought seemed like an ideal event to participate in to raise funds. The Ultra Beast is a marathon distance (42km) obstacle race over 'challenging' terrain with over 70 obstacles and will be held at Ivory Rock near Ipswich. “As a result of this challenge I’ve learnt much more about CF and tried to share this knowledge through social media. Sufferers have trouble breathing and getting nutrients from food. “I’ve learnt more about what my nephew goes through to stay healthy, and my sister deals with as his mum and this year I turn 38, which really brings it all home,” he said. Graham has been raising money with friends and family by linking online charity pages in Queensland and the UK to his Facebook page. “So far I’ve raised over $1,500 in Queensland and almost as much in England,” he said. “It’s humbling, because I’ve not really used social media for anything like this before.
AUGUST PROMOTION
“I’m just trying to raise as much for Cystic Fibrosis Queensland as possible, to help them fund research and support for families trying to manage the horror they face.” Training for the Ultra Beast has been challenging but enjoyable, cycling from Mount Mellum to work at Nambour Hospital, and running in the Glasshouse Mountains and beyond. “All the exercise means I am eating a lot of food, but it’s through choice at least. CF sufferers have to eat as much as two and a half times the amount of an average person, just to maintain normal weight,” Graham said. Graham is hoping to raise as much money as possible before September 3. If you would like to support his efforts check out https://give. everydayhero.com/au/ultrabeast-2016-for-cf and https://www.facebook.com/graham.reeks.7

Sarah’s on her way to Germany Sarah Peters of Maleny is off to Germany in a week to represent Australia in the Euro Paint Horse World Youth Championships; this is the first time that this competition has been held outside America. There will be 15 highly skilled World Youth teams competing, this is well up from the usual six teams that have competed in the past World Youth Championships. To qualify, Sarah had to participate in all levels of Shows amassing points over a period of two years, riding many disciples, Western, English, Dressage, Trail and Showmanship. Sarah is currently No 1 Youth Rider in Australia. In September last year Sarah was invited to apply for selection to be a member of the Youth Team and after completing the criteria, she was accepted as one of four members with two Team Managers in the Australian team. To say she was excited was an understatement as it has been a 10-year dream of Sarah’s to represent Australia in her chosen sport. When she was selected, she began the task to fully fundraise a specified amount to fund the trip, all the while promoting the Youth of Paint Horse, Australia. This is a sport that Sarah has enjoyed for the last 10 years and during this period Sarah attended many youth camps, training clinics and shows to gain experience for this level of achievements. In Germany the competitors within the 15 World Teams competing at this elite level of competition will be required to compete on an unknown horse. These well credentialed horses will be
BEERWAH DENTURE CLINIC
donated to the World Show for the soul use of the 15 teams. No Youth Member has ridden any of these horses, so everyone is on the same level. As each event is called, the 15 competitors for that event goes forward to draw a number and that number relates to a specific horse. You then go with that horse and trainer, you are allowed 40 minutes to learn all you can about that horse, then you go back to the arena for your competition event. “I am honoured to be invited to represent Australia in my chosen sport, win or lose I will fly my country’s flag proudly,” said Sarah. It has been hard raising the funds required, and Sarah said she’d like to thank all who supported her along the way. The service clubs, her grandmother who took on the role of fundraising manager, the people who stopped and bought a raffle ticket and a sausage in the streets of Maleny. “I could not have done it with your support. I will go to Germany trying my best but also with a heavy heart as I have lost four dear friends during this 12-month journey,” said Sarah. As a point of interest, Sarah’s other passion is cattle and on her return from Germany, Sarah will be off to Tasmania in October to represent QLD in Cattle Judging and Handling in the National Finals. Clearly Sarah is a girl of many talents, well done Sarah and good luck in Germany.

The festival will be spread over three stages with a range of local and national artists performing. New conversation segments on Saturday and Sunday morning will feature Colin Petersen, former drummer with the Bee Gees on Saturday and Louie Shelton a legendary US session guitarist on Sunday. Another notable act is James T. the former frontman from the band Canned Heat. This year’s Festival can be downloaded and has a comprehensive and engaging Saturday and Sunday children’s program and includes heaps of free workshops such as singing, ukulele, songwriting, Street Theatre, Sunday Gospel Singing and more. A successful 25 year anniversary
A very enjoyable 25th anniversary celebration was held at the Mary MacKillop Centre in Beerwah last Sunday, commencing with an ecumenical thanksgiving service. The celebrants were Anglican pastor Rev Tony Halstead and associate Catholic priest Fr Christopher Obi with other lay members of the community participating in the service. The liturgy leader was Graham Nicholson, this was a task not unfamiliar to Graham as he fulfilled this role at the original dedication, but added he may not be available for the 50th. At the conclusion of the formal service the residents of Lavally Lodge provided a sing along, with the community providing extra accompaniment. There was also a photographic slide show of the history of the community from worshiping in the Anglican Church, which was where the Aldi car park is now, and the Uniting Church then in Katherine Street Beerwah. The slides showed the Peachester Road site transformed from a bush block to the present worship centre. Fr Kevin Smith provided the closing address before everyone adjourned to the shelter of the verandahs and activities area to help themselves to a barbecue lunch prepared by the members of the Beerwah Lions. The cutting of the 25th anniversary cake concluded the very successful friendly gathering before guests from Noosa, Toowoomba, Landsborough, Maleny, Caloundra, Glass House Mountains and Beerwah headed for home. Fr Christopher returned to Caloundra to pack in preparation to relocate to his new posting at Windsor in Brisbane.

Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley In July, the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre enjoyed a visit from The Great Southeast and presenter Sophie Formica to film the ‘Footsteps of Flinders’ journey. Melinda Bingley is a personal trainer who also offers ‘Mind and Body Adventures’ that take in some of the Sunshine Coast’s most beautiful spots. Her tours are active and fun and include kayaking, hiking and much more. She has put together a series of outdoor experiences including the Glass House Mountains Kayak and Hiking Discovery Adventure tour that is all about following in the footsteps of Matthew Flinders, who explored the area in 1799. The tour includes kayaking in the Pumicestone Passage and hiking up and around the Glass House Mountains. Part of the filming featured the visitor centre’s Flinders exhibit and our own volunteer ambassador, Peter Hyde was there to impart local knowledge and offer a welcome cool off. Melinda also offers a tour called ‘Six Mountains in One Day’ that sees guests hiking local peaks such as Mt Coolum and Mt Cooroora. Mel’s Mind and Body adventures depart several times a month on select dates or by appointment. For more information, visit www.mabpersonaltraining.com.au/adventures We have a weekend vacancy at the Glass House Mountains Visitor Centre on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. If you would like to volunteer with us and enjoy working with people, call in for an application form, or contact me via email: bev.dooley@visitsunshinecoast.com
Business feature Malcolm McFarlane has been manufacturing and selling shade sails since the 1980’s. Being well established for many years, it was an easy transition for Malcolm to add related products to his existing shade cloth and trim business range by becoming a Transportable Shade Shed reseller. Based in Armidale, Malcolm recently became a reseller for a number of reasons. The main driving factor behind his decision was that over the years of selling shade sails he kept getting customer enquiries about the possibility of placing large shade structures at the entrance to their homes. While Malcolm had the facilities to manufacture the product, the key issue was that the shade additions were required to be specifically engineered and certified. The advantage of becoming a reseller was that he could now offer superior shade protection to customers that was already engineered and certified compliant, all without the hassle of having to design and manufacture the product and go through the compliance process himself. Another reason that Malcolm invested in becoming a reseller was that by being based in rural focused Armidale, he could see the vast potential and opportunity to market and sell the 100% Australian designed and manufactured product. Opportunities exist from large industrial sheds to rural properties, as well as numerous vehicle coverage options such as solid coverings for caravans and boats. Apart from the security of reselling a well known quality Australian manufactured product, the collaboration of Transportable Shade Sheds and Saver6.com allows resellers, such as Malcolm, the peace of mind to have an established and respected sideline business that is backed up at every stage of the business process … from the initial purchasing of the trailers through to training and product support. While Malcolm is reselling the products in conjunction with his own long term established business – M and T McFarlane Trim and Shade Sails – he has the additional competitive advantage of around the clock online marketing support through Saver6.com, that potentially has a global reach. Another key advantage for resellers is that they have access to ongoing online mentorship. In Malcolm’s case while he enjoys a level of business success and customer loyalty from owning a long term enterprise, he now has access to a wider community through the support from Saver6.com. This online mentoring tool offers both practical online support and a regularly maintained digital presence. It also provides small business owners the opportunity to ‘think bigger’ and market their products to a much wider audience than more traditional sales approaches. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Armidale region, please contact Malcolm via social media or on 02 677 11327. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss or look at a business option that may work well with your current industry, contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 07 5405 3620.

Two years into a three-year business degree, Leana Filocamo is edging closer to her dream job as an Events Manager. Crossing the halfway point of her three-year course, she said it felt like yesterday that she was on campus for QUT’s Caboolture campus open day, where it all began. “I visited various stalls, took tours, met staff and students and I found out I could be eligible for a variety of scholarships and bursaries - it was an instant relief to know there was support available.” “By the end of the day I felt much more confident and reassured in what I wanted to do and achieve.” Head of Campus Mr Robert Craig said this year’s event is expected to attract more than 1,000 visitors and encourages them to make the most of the event. “It’s the one day of the year that we throw the doors open, providing an opportunity to have all the questions answered in a single place,” he said. “You can tour the campus, meet staff and students, learn about the course and career options, find out about the scholarship programs and enjoy a busy schedule of local entertainment,” he said. Now well versed in university life, Leana had some tips for students planning on heading along this weekend. “Visit every stall you can, join the tours and ask every question that comes to mind - nothing is too big or small to ask,” said Leana. Leana’s mum Tracey agreed and said that as a parent, she learned a lot about the options open to students.
“Open Day provided us a great insight into uni life, the opportunities available and the pathways for students to reach their chosen careers,” Tracey said. QUT’s Caboolture campus open day is being held this Sunday, August 21 from 9.00am – 2.00pm. Free parking is available and a free shuttle bus will be running between the Caboolture train station and QUT throughout the day. New church facility for Landsborough The Seventh day Adventist Church in Landsborough is about to expand. The Church recently received development approval from Sunshine Coast Council for the 27-29 Maleny Street site to renovate and extend the existing church complex by enlarging the main church auditorium, enlarging the foyer, incorporating new bathroom facilities and adding a new teaching room. A new community centre is also to be built on land adjacent to the existing church, which will incorporate large multi-purpose rooms, a kitchen, a library, a storage room and bathroom facilities. Vehicles will access the site via two driveway crossovers to Maleny Street. Two crossovers will provide access to two separate car parking areas. Pedestrian/cyclist access will be via connections to the existing footpath at the site’s frontage. The development has a total of 26 on-site car parks through retaining the existing nine car parking spaces and providing a further 17 new spaces. The development plans describe the development
as achieving a “… contemporary, architecturally designed development … consistent with the traditional rural town character of Landsborough.”

Graeme Lean, a photographer who is well known for his adventurous spirit has used his Nikon D800 with a 105mm f2.8 macro lens to capture this small frog sunning itself on the drawbar of the caravan. The cool weather made the frog sluggish thus allowing Graeme to place it on a white sheet of paper for the photo. The shallow depth of field is a function of the lens at minimum focus distance and a
moving target did not allow for focus stacking. This is an example of working with the subject as the frog was not prepared to stay put on a log. ISO of 2800, f16 at 1/125 and use of a softbox to produce a lovely even light.

ihear Beerwah - Supporting the hearing needs of the local community 21st - 28th AUGUST One in six Australians is affected by hearing loss – that’s an estimated 3.5 million people. Hearing loss in Australia is mainly mild in nature, but one third of people experience a loss that is moderate or severe to profound. The prevalence of hearing loss rises from 1% for people aged younger than 15 years to three in every four people aged over 70 years. The number of Australians who are hearing impaired or deaf is increasing because of long-term exposure to excessive noise in the workplace, the environment and a result of an ageing population. Hearing loss is projected to increase to 1 in every 4 Australians by 2050. Hearing Awareness Week (August 21st-28th August) aims to highlight the issues faced by people with hearing loss as the 12

August and Ernestine Vandreike and family left Germany in 1885 on the Dorunda, following their sons Friedrich (Fred) and Heinrich (Harry) who had settled in Bethania on the Logan River where they Adeline in front of her joined other German settlers. The journey was not home without tragedy as two of the children died from typhus on the voyage. Adeline, the youngest, was just six years old when she arrived in Australia. Fred and Harry were one of the 17 families who selected land in Teutoburg in October 1887. Fred selected Portion 27 and Harry Portion 23, both about 150 acres. Fred and Harry were in their early twenties when they took up their selections and over the next five years they worked hard to clear the land and make the required improvements to freehold the land. Fred then turned his efforts to the needs of the community and was instrumental in building the school in 1892 and the Lutheran Church in 1893. While Fred was ready to settle down, (he married Bertha Kelk from Bethania in 1903 and brought her to Teutoburg to live), Harry had gone to New Guinea in search of adventure that sadly ended with his death in 1905. He had willed his land to his younger sister Adeline. Adeline married Otto Bergann in 1910 and they had a daughter called Henriette (Ettie). The land was used for farming, including beekeeping, and they had allowed part of it to be used by the Witta Sports Ground for cricket, football and athletics over many years. At a public meeting in March 1926 it was announced that Mrs Otto Bergann was donating the land to the community. In a grateful letter signed by The Sportsmen of Witta to Mrs Bergann, they express their thanks, ‘the ground is priceless, is ideally located and could not be equalled or surpassed in this district.’ Given the example of community spirit shown by her brother Fred, it is not so surprising that Adeline donated the land to the Witta community. Adeline and her husband are both buried in the Witta Cemetery, opposite the land she donated and next door to the park, which the community named in honour of the Vandreike family. Wittafest is a community-driven festival held this year on Saturday, September 17 from 10.00am until sunset. It is a free event focused on the era 1900 to 1929 with live music, activities and food with a flavour and authenticity of that era. Supporting Witta Rec Club.
History of the Glasshouse Mountains Hall
The Glass House Mountains branch of the CWA was formed in October 1935, and an article in the Nambour Chronicle on October 11, 1935 made note of this event: ‘CWA Branch formed. Mesdames G P W Wriede (district vice-president) and Mrs C H Monk (president of Beerburrum branch CWA) visited Glasshouse Mountains and addressed a meeting of ladies on the aims and objectives of the movement. It was decided to form a branch. Mrs H Hodge is President, Mrs H Niven Secretary, and Mrs F W Barton Treasurer.’ In November 1936 the branch held a First Birthday Social at the School of Arts. Members were joined by representatives from the Beerburrum and Caboolture branches, and Mrs Wriede addressed the members. There were musical items, competitions and Mrs G F Nicklin cut the birthday cake at the afternoon tea. In 1948, after meeting in the School of Arts since 1935, a request was made to set aside a part of the School of Arts Reserve for the sole use of the CWA. However, eventually a separate room for the CWA was built onto the Hall, with its own separate entrance. The branch was then able to provide a venue for the women of the district for meetings, as a social venue and rest room, and a craft centre. Many other local organisations held their meetings in the CWA room until it was rebuilt during renovations to the Hall in 2010. Does anyone know when the CWA ceased in Glass House Mountains? The photograph below (courtesy of Picture Sunshine Coast, Sunshine Coast Libraries) shows local residents Ethel Burgess, her mother Mrs Alice Jean Burgess, and Mrs Louise Winterhoff attending a CWA conference at City Hall in May 1964. Hall Centenary celebrations will be held on Saturday, September 10, from 10.00am. Everyone welcome. Enquiries John Winterhoff 5496 9349 or Elaine Reeves 5496 9134. www.gcnews.com.au
Cookies Chicken launched at Cafe Beerwah Rob and Leah Martin, the father and daughter team behind Cafe Beerwah, are thrilled to let customers know that they will now be adding the delicious Cookies Chicken range of products to their menu. While they will continue to offer their selection of home-cooked café favourites, they saw a great opportunity to offer their customers a new range of flavoursome menu items that they knew, would prove extremely popular. A few months ago, they were approached by an area manager from Cookies Chicken to consider offering the Cookies Chicken system to customers. Originally from Tasmania, the distinctive brand has continued to spread through New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. With their tag line 'Lipsmackingood' Leah and Rob thought so too. “With so many eateries in Beerwah we wanted to offer something different, and Cookies Chicken seemed like a great option,” explained Rob. Training took place
in early July, and Rob and Leah were taught the secret of how to mix, season and cook the tasty chicken to perfection. The secret of the taste sensation is the special way the chicken is coated and use of seasoning. Made to order from fresh chicken breast; it is coated with specially blended ingredients to keep in the moistness and ensure the seasoning sticks all over for a maximum burst of flavour. Deep fried at the right temperature makes the coating lovely and crispy, and the centre perfectly cooked - without being oily. With the choice of three unique seasonings (Traditional, Mild'N'Spicy, and Hot'N'Spicy), there is something to suit the whole family. Although they have just launched the Cookies Chicken range, the response so far has been excellent. To celebrate the arrival of Cookies Chicken, Cafe Beerwah is holding an open day on Saturday, August 20 from 10.00am. Everyone is welcome to drop by and enjoy free tastings, meet representatives from Cookies Chicken HQ, and
get free balloons for the kids. This will also be the chance to check out their new mobile trailer, which is available for functions, events, and fundraisers.

Writers' Club at Mooloolah Contributed by Michelle Lenz Term 3 at Mooloolah State School has seen the introduction of a writers' club, run once a week by Ms Jill Lonergan our master teacher and Ms Kerry Flello, our support teacher. The club, ‘Writers’ Refuge’, is open to students from Years 4 to 6. Each week the group of young writers meet up to compose poems or short stories. The students conference and bounce ideas off each other, giving fabulous feedback. After planning their work, they quickly take to the computers or their writer’s notebook to enter the realm of creativity. The writers' club is encouraging students to be creative and to risk take as they gain new skills and insights into being an author. To allow the students to connect with a real audience that may read their work, Ms Lonergan seeks competitions that give them an authentic purpose for writing. Currently the students are entering their works into a writing competition sponsored by the Mooloolaba Rotary Club, with the chance of

School News Student Leaders Investiture ceremony
Recently Beerwah State High School proudly acknowledged the great work done by our 2015-16 school leaders and then invested the new group of student leaders inviting them to take up the challenge to lead the student body forward into 2017. Congratulations to all of our new junior and senior house captains. They are looking forward to promoting healthy team competition between the four houses and also getting students up and moving at lunchtime sports challenges. Our new student council has already started on their good works with leading a Jeans for Genes day fundraiser. Congratulations to our new junior vice captains, Ashley McIntyre and Cara Yuill, junior school captains Breanne Howden and Jai Dempster, senior vice captains Izaac Whan and Taylor Woodward and senior school captains Erin Hatcher and Clare Eeles. Staff and students look forward to working with this extremely dedicated group of student leaders over the next 12 months.
Kids tuck into healthy feast Contributed by Debbie Ives
Beerwah State School's two Prep classes had a feast fit for kings and queens! The students harvested the many vegetables growing in the Prep garden, kale, broccoli, basil, nasturtiums, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, capsicum and also strawberries. The children made scrumptious strawberry vinaigrette to go on their fresh salad, and some refreshing homemade strawberry ice-cream. Using their maths skills the Prep students made some special patterned strawberry skewers. It was an extremely enjoyable way to spend a Friday. The most rewarding part for the two Prep teachers, Mrs Brannigan and Mrs Philpot, was that the students were all so keen to try all the different vegetables that they have been growing in their garden.
Hard work pays off! Past student of Beerwah State Primary School and current Year 12 student of Beerwah State High School, Matt Jones has recently been awarded the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Award for the North Coast Region at the Queensland Training Awards. These awards are the state's highest recognition of people and organisations who strive for success, best practice and innovation in training. Matt commenced his traineeship with the ANZ Bank in 2014 and since then has learnt many facets of banking. The nomination process for this award is both lengthy and arduous. Matt will be heading to Brisbane next month alongside the other Regional Finalists to attend the Queensland Training Awards Gala Dinner where successful finalists will be awarded with the Australian Training Awards in Darwin. Congratulations to Matt on his already outstanding achievement and we wish him the best of luck for his future outcomes.

Beerwah High is outstanding!
Contributed by Rebecca Stephenson Earlier this year, the BSHS production of the musical 'Popstars' was a great success. The students enjoyed themselves so much, that they jumped at the chance to perform again when their teacher directors decided to enter an excerpt of the show into the Sunshine Coast Drama Festival. On Friday, July 29, the musical cast competed in the heats where they received rave reviews and a standing ovation for their performance. They were invited to return to the Festival's exclusive 'highlights' evening at the Caloundra Events Centre on Saturday, August 6. At the end of the night, Beerwah High came out on top, winning the Platinum Award for Dramatic Performance and the prestigious perpetual trophy for the competition's most Outstanding Performance. Directors Deb Holland and Rebecca Stephenson are so proud of their students. "It brings us such joy to work with these talented students. “The hundreds of hours we dedicate to extra-curricular performance are worth it when our kids appreciate the experience and gain so many skills from it." Instead of taking a year off from directing another school musical, the teachers have committed to putting on another show in 2017. "Simply because we love working with these students and we love what we do!"
Kindy kids in action
The welcome mat was out for grandparents and special guests at Beerwah Kindergarten. The laughter would have been heard down the street as nannas ventured into the cubby house to read stories and grandads created masterpieces alongside their grandchild in the sand pit. Beerwah Kindy co-director Rebecca Mackintosh said it was a morning of sheer enjoyment and was a much anticipated annual event. “It was so heart-warming to see the proud smiles on the children’s faces as they ushered their grandparents, mums or special guests around their Kindy,” she said. “It was a hive of activity in every corner as our guests joined in the fun. “The highlights of the day included coming together for the music session to join in singing and dancing, and sharing a delicious morning tea feast.”
The doors were also thrown open again on August 6 for the Kindy’s annual open day and dozens of families came to check out the fun and adventure that awaits those who will be joining the kindy family in future years. For more information on how to enrol, visit www.beerwahkindy.com.au.

Fabulous Fabaceae Spring appears to be with us a few weeks early this year and it’s time for a walk in the bush to enjoy the beautiful wildflowers of our region. And if you’re inspired like me, it’s time to get some of these plants in your garden, so you can be enjoying their floriferous beauty at home! Many members of the pea family (Fabaceae) are busy flowering and brightening forest, heath and roadsides alike. Hovea is a local shrub of 1-2 m and a stunning specimen when massed in its purple blooms. Hardenbergia is another exceptional flowering plant also in purple, but its form is varied from a small vine, to cascading low shrub, great for slopes and retaining walls. Our native Indigo are about to start blooming in purples and pinks and for a splash of yellow we have a range of low growing shrubs that include Pultenaea, Dillwynia, Aotus, Oxylobium species and many more. But wait there’s more. The benefits of these plants don’t just end with their spectacular flowering. These shrubs are dense low growing plants in full sun that provide great habitat for shy small birds and also being members of the pea family, they are legumes that fix nitrogen for themselves and are crucial in improving soil structure and quality. Find a place for some of our fabulous Fabaceae in your garden and enjoy their benefits above and below ground.
Environment National feral cat control survey
Feral cats have caused the extinction of at least 20 species in Australia and are putting another 124 at risk. RMIT University in Melbourne is conducting a research project into the extent to which feral cat control is occurring across Australia, and to estimate the number of feral cats that are removed from the environment each year. The information gathered will help generate a better understanding of feral cat management, including how to make improvements. The online survey is made up of a number of short questions about feral cats and what, if any, measures you take to manage feral cats. If you’d like to participate, go to www.rmit.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/ SV_6SArCuGiGitdi6h If you have any questions about your participation, please contact Richard Faulkner on (03) 9925 9095 or richard.faulkner@rmit.edu.au.

AUGUST 17 2016
by Alan Webb After the heavy flood rains in 2015 it was good to see the reappearance this summer of the crimson-spotted rainbowfish in my local creek - Hellhole Creek. The species is a member of the iconic family Melanotaenidae – a group of colourful fishes restricted to northern Australia and New Guinea and popular among aquarists. As the name suggests, the species can be readily identified by the crimson spot on the gill cover. Rainbowfishes are important components of aquatic food chains both as prey for predatory fishes (such as eels) but also as predators on aquatic insect larvae – most notably mosquito larvae. In recent decades, experimental studies have demonstrated that rainbowfishes, including the crimson-spotted rainbowfish, are very effective consumers of mosquito larvae and their presence in a waterbody, possibly through release of a volatile chemical (kairomone), can have a repellent effect and prevent females of some mosquito species from laying their eggs. While rainbowfish may eat tadpoles, studies have demonstrated they are predominantly insect larvae feeders and crimson spotted rainbowfish are now regularly being used in biological control of mosquito larvae in SE Queensland. If you want to stock these fish it is important to obtain them from the same catchment where the dam or pond is located to maintain genetic integrity. Seek advice from Department of Agriculture and Fisheries regarding how and where to obtain them.

You Said It Council responsibility
I stand corrected about my recent comments regarding SA Renewable energy projects. The problem involved a delay in completing a link between SA and Victoria power grids. Not wishing to enter a debate on subsidies, it depends on whose data you read. These range from Greenpeace to the Mineral Council of Australia; each have their own agendas. The SA renewable project is an initiative of their State Government. I believe the same should apply in Queensland. If our council want to take responsibility for State Government projects, I can think of a few more deserving examples. I’m also sure that residents can think of more. Several of our State Schools do not have flashing lights in the school zone. The state government do not appear to want to fix it, so why don’t the council do it? Surely our children's safety is important? The regular gridlock at the Landsborough level crossing is another initiative they could take up. The Department of Main Roads are not going to do anything until the rail track duplication is sorted. Even with the current rhetoric it will be many years until it is completed. If the south lane of Caloundra Road were made a ‘Stop’ sign where it joins Railway Street and the right turn into Cribb Street was made ‘Bus Only’ then the congestion would disappear. Traffic entering and leaving the town could do so unimpeded by crossing vehicles. All it would take is a few road signs and some white paint. The constant complaints by residents, about tip fees are another issue they could solve. I volunteer at Lifeline at Kunda Park and I am appalled at the amount of rubbish dumped there, especially after a long weekend. People use it rather than pay at the tip. This leaves Lifeline with the real cost of collecting it and taking it to the refuse station. These projects would cost a few thousand dollars, “Hey let’s build a solar farm.” Derek Browning Glass House Mountains

Where do we go?
If you are from Peachester and you would like to share ideas, show your support for, and talk about options for social sport and recreational spaces in our community, then please come along to a community meeting on Sunday, August 28, 2.00pm at the Peachester School. This is not a school event, this is a community event and everyone is welcome. We are a group of Peachester community members including parents of children growing up in Peachester. We recently came together for a community cricket day on the school oval. This was a great day for all who came, young and old. Peachester has a long history of family/picnic cricket days and we would love to return this tradition to the community and have days like this on a regular basis on community-owned land. There are currently no public recreational facilities in Peachester. These are important places for people to gather and build stronger communities. This is an opportunity for the greater community of Peachester to talk about what they would use most. We feel that at the very least an open green space would be a simple means for allowing our
Increased risk of bushfire
Whether or not some of the racing motorcyclists involved in the proposed TT style event proposed for 2017 along some of our local roads remove sections of their exhaust systems in order to ramp up their motor power capacity, we are all facing higher than usual risk of bush fire at this middle of December event. This is because of the strong chance of sparks emanating from high revving machines working under great pressure while operating along roads with high levels of summer stressed bushland. Please stop this madness now. Laurie Lowe Booroobin
Restored our faith
Two weeks ago it seemed to my husband and I that almost everything we touched did not work out. Then a small accident in our car brought us to Glasshouse Country Autos, where we found two people who helped us regain our faith in human nature. Paul and Marie could not have been more helpful, more efficient or friendlier, and we went
community to gather, have fun, exercise and for our children to ‘unplug’, meet, ride, run, kick, and play. This space could then pave the way for further facilities and equipment to be included in the future. As well, we are exploring options to utilise our school grounds and hall facilities in ways that best work with school requirements. If you would be interested in moving this idea forward or offering some local advice then please come along. We would love to have you join our representative group that is aiming to establish the needs of our GREATER community. Come along for a game of ‘on the spot’, social cricket prior to the meeting. Bring your own picnic. Cricket starts at 11.00am on the bottom school oval. Cost is $5.00 per family – donations to the school P&C for once again hosting this family event. Meeting will be at 2.00pm. For enquiries, phone Ashley Holznagel on 0479 137 780. home to Maleny with smiles on our faces. Nine working days later, and after Paul had had to access five different used tailgates for our Polo before he found one that was a perfect match, we were re-united with the car which, indeed, looked like brand new. Such service was nothing short of miraculous, and in little old Glass House village! A postscript to this event was when the taxi called for us to take us to collect the now gleaming car, my husband inadvertently left a leather waterbottle carrier in the taxi. We rang Glasshouse Taxis, to be told they had found it and it would be delivered to us in Maleny the next morning. And it was! Yet another miracle? Helen Evans Maleny

If you know what you’re doing the right additions and modifications can make your home a more comfortable place to live, or even increase it’s resale value. Before you rush in jackhammer first and rip out everything, it’s important to consider the logistics of renovating. First of all you must know where, what and how to renovate, to ensure your home benefits from your additions. Secondly, as smart renovations will most likely increase your equity – this may just be the ideal time to enlist the help of a mortgage broker. With the assistance of a professional, refinancing your home loan and affording your renos will be a walk in the park. 24

Is now the time to get your hard-hat on and renovate?
Which renovations will net you the biggest increase in resale value?
Are we spending to much? Whether we’re renovating the right way is up for discussion, however it’s a certainty that Australian’s are renovating their homes en-masse. In fact during the 3 months to March 2016, Australians spent a whopping $1.94 billion dollars on alterations and additions to their homes according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. That’s an average of over $200 per household!
What do Australians want in a home It may be tempting to update your entire home, from doorknobs to oven hobs, but this will undoubtedly push your finances to the limits. Instead, it’s better to focus on certain areas of your property that you, or a potential buyer, will reap the most benefit from.
A Buyer’s Agents Association report has shed some light on what these might be, with a survey that discovered what Aussie Obviously every household in the country buyers want in a home. First on the list didn’t renovate during this period, so was open plan living rooms, second was a the real value is much higher. We know butler’s pantry and third was good natural Aussies are spending a lot on renovations, light in a home. its resale value. According to CoreLogic RP Data, 92 per cent of Australians who sold in the first quarter of 2016 made a profit. Refinancing your home loan and undertaking smart renovations could be the key to ensuring that you’re among them this quarter!

Environment levy
It looks like Paul Dolan of Elimbah has managed to stir up quite a few Glass House Mountains locals with his concern about the time it takes him to travel to work via Steve Irwin Way with the new Reed Street traffic lights. The following is what they had to say. I reckon the topic has been covered now. Regards,
Are you for real?
I live off Bricalli Road intersecting with Bowen Road at Glass House Mountains. We are elated that traffic lights are nearly finished at Bowen Road intersection and the lights are operational at Reed Street Glass House Mountains. There have been some fatalities at both these intersections. Also when there is an incident on the Bruce Highway (which happens quite a lot) the traffic is diverted down Steve Irwin Way North and South. When it is diverted down Johnston Road onto Bowen Road we cannot even get out of our street. So sorry to inconvenience you on your way to work, I am sure you would stop and let traffic out of the bottlenecks. As far as access roads go locally, Glass House is split into two areas with Steve Irwin Way right in the middle. It would be impossible to have local access roads. And we don't just get onto Steve Irwin Way to go shopping locally, we use Steve Irwin Way to travel to Caloundra and up north and south to Brisbane. For goodness sake it is not as if you are stuck at the lights for minutes. The school at Glass House has a very big traffic flow in the mornings and afternoons and the lights have improved the big bottlenecks. I love living in Glass House and now when there is a major incident on the Bruce Highway at least I know I would not be boxed in by inconsiderate road users. Dorothy Lennon Glass House Mountains
Amazement here as well
After reading Elimbah resident Mr Dolan's comments about the inconvenience of negotiating the new Glass House traffic lights I too was amazed. Discussions with many residents here indicate the 90/10% split to be the other way around. Perhaps viewing the effect the lights have had as a local resident might have changed his mind? Ease of access to Steve Irwin Way and reduction of cause of collisions through impatience and intolerance is certainly welcomed. One solution for Mr Dolan would be to set the alarm clock 10 minutes earlier so he won't be sick and tired of being ‘stuck in traffic!’ It may be better for the daily commute to Caloundra to use the Bruce as it was intended. And when the traffic lights become necessary in Elimbah, how will he then react? Keith Glass House Mountains
Unaware of danger
While clearly the letter writer does regularly travel along Steve Irwin Way, it is also quite apparent he is unaware of the real and present danger that was associated with the intersection as it was, prior to the traffic lights being installed. (Which I might say, were the longest installation of traffic lights I have ever known.) www.gcnews.com.au
I will not go on about the Bowen Road lights, but anyone who lives in that area will know that they placed their lives on the line, had accidents at the intersection and were lucky not to be killed. Mr Dolan, it might be more sensible for you to seek work in a southerly direction or it might be much easier for you to use the rail line at Elimbah. This would allow you to watch the lights on the railway, but as you would not be driving, hey, you wouldn't have to be so bothered. The only other suggestion I would make, is leave 10 minutes earlier to go to your place of work. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains
Seeing the light
Oh my goodness....my heart bleeds for the poor gentleman from Elimbah who finds that traffic lights along Steve Irwin Way are a hindrance to his drive to work. (GC&M News, August 10). The deaths at the Landsborough Railway Street intersection were instrumental in making that light controlled crossroads safe as well as allowing the Landsborough and Maleny traffic an access to Steve Irwin Way. The new lights at Glass House again have been waited upon for a long time, again to allow residents safe access. The gentleman refers to the ‘minority’ who want safely controlled intersections. Does he really believe that governments have so much money that they pander to minorities? He states that he doesn't want to use the Bruce Highway to get to work in Caloundra because of roadworks. Can I suggest to this individual that he gets up a bit earlier in the morning to then enjoy a leisurely, stress free drive to work. The other suggestion that comes to mind is that he should relocate to Caloundra and save himself some angst. Joanna Aitken Landsborough
Congratulations to Meredyth Sauer on a brilliant letter questioning the misuses of our Environment Levy (GC&M News August 10). I too worry about how precious chunks of this Levy are being spent on low priority stuff like the examples quoted by Ms Sauer. I strongly agree that this important Levy should not be used on anything else but the purchase of ecologically significant land for habitat linkage and protection. Perhaps Cr McKay, who holds the Environment Portfolio, can enlighten us why this misuse is happening? And outline what needs to be done to restore this levy to its original designation or hold public debate on how it should be spent? G Luft Maleny

Traffic light absurdity
All I can say to Paul Dolan is – Oh you poor diddums. Get up 10 minutes earlier, so that you can get to work on time. Steve Irwin Way is our access road, not the highway. Doesn’t matter how short (or long) our trips are, it is still the only road we have to access our shops, schools or whatever (just like you and Beerburrum Road). I live off Bowen Road, and sometimes I have to sit at the corner of Bowen Road and Steve Irwin Way for anything up to five minutes plus, before I can access Steve Irwin Way safely. Like all the residents in this area, I can’t wait until the traffic lights have been installed, the death which occurred at this corner a short time ago, is one death too many. The lights at Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street have made a big difference, making the intersection a lot safer. Mr Dolan, please use the highway. There is only one traffic light to negotiate. Maleny Classics ‘Show ‘n’ Shine’ on again this Sunday Following on from the awesome success of last years’ inaugural event; the Maleny Classics 2016 is back with the hugely popular Show ‘n’ Shine. Given last years’ turn out of over 2,000 attendees, the fundraiser is now slated as an annual event and will be coming up this Sunday, August 21 at the Witta Recreational Club. Featuring pre-1980 classic and custom cars, bikes and vintage caravans, the fact that the event showcases only classic era vehicles, marks it as different to many other car shows. Best of all it’s free for spectators to come along and admire the vehicles and soak up the vintage and retro feel. As well as a huge selection of pre-1980 vehicles, there will be also be live entertainment, food and drink stalls, Witta car boot market and trade and retro market stalls. This year, organisers will be including classic motorcycles which are sure to be an added drawcard for Hinterland bike enthusiasts. This new display category ties in well with the 90th anniversary of the Ducati motorcycle, and so the Sunshine Coast Ducati Owners Club have agreed to put on a display of Ducati’s, past to present to kick off the Classic Motorcycles addition. GC&M News had a chat to event organiser Debs Swain about some of the highlights of this years’ event. Adding the motorcycle category is a long held dream for Debs. She is also excited about the vintage caravans which are from an era when life was simpler, she said. She particularly likes the way the van owners have a lot of fun themeing the vans (and sometimes themselves) in their vintage setups for the event. “The van and car combo are like little pieces of history, when you peak inside and see each van's theme. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face and leave you in awe,” said Debs. Debs is also equally enthusiastic about the cars,
Magnificent Musical Moments Sunshine Brass, in conjunction with the Buderim Concert Band, are proud to present Magnificent Musical Moments at the Maroochy RSL Events Centre, Memorial Avenue Maroochydore commencing at 1.30pm on Sunday, August 21. Two of the best community bands on the Sunshine Coast have come together to give you a feast of wonderful music ranging from classical to pop in a great venue. Admission is $15.00 for adults, and $13.00 for concession. Tickets are available at the door. This is great value. Harmonies of the heart
The Sunshine Statesmen are presenting a night of entertainment at the Buderim War Memorial Hall on Saturday, August 27. There will be six different acts performing on the night including a very young Saxophonist Ash Hutton, Harpist and Celtic singer Kathy Forster, and the UkeCrazy People who play a wide range of songs with the unique sound of ukuleles, vocals and harmonies. The multi-talented Brian Martin from Maleny will present a solo performance as well as directing the Statesmen. New World Rhythm, a mixed aCappella chorus, will spice up the evening with breathtaking harmonies from around the world, including gospel, folk and the rhythm and sounds of Africa. The chorus will be directed by the effervescent Dani Jones. The doors will be open from 6.30pm with the show commencing at 7.00pm. For tickets, contact Paul on 5445 6497. Tickets which include refreshment and a light supper are $25.00 for adults and $10.00 for under 15s.

By Sonia Clark and hopes that like last year, some truly unique vehicles will come out of the woodwork and be displayed. “Pre-1980 classics were made when cars were manufactured out of metal, not plastic. The era reflects a time when cars had style and each model had a unique charm and personality. Back then, your car was a statement of who you are. It showed a lot more of your personality and what you wanted to say about your life,” explained Debs. Other event attractions include a showing of Kate Woolston's 1955 Split Screen Kombi which is rated as one of the best examples of Split Screen Kombis around, and the ‘Poker Run’ from Mapleton to Witta where participants engage in a two-hour mystery run along the range. There will also be a couple of TV car show production teams coming along to do a segment for their shows which is pretty exciting for the event organisers. “I'm hoping to see some unique classic cars that people don't normally take out for a spin; those rare barn finds we all talk about with legendary status,” said Debs. “Mind you, there's nothing nicer than seeing a classic car driven as someone's everyday family car. That's special.” For more details check out www.malenyclassics.com or head to the Maleny Classics Facebook page. Further enquiries contact Debs on 0417 626 167. 351 Witta Road, Witta via Maleny. Car entries should get there from 8.00am onwards, gates open to the public from 9.00am - 12.30pm.

“The Housing Industry Association has responded to the latest ABS figures by acknowledging building approval levels on a national basis are easing from the record highs they hit last year. “Once again this is due predominantly to the well-known slow-down in the home units and apartments market which itself offers an opportunity for people wanting to use the QFHOG to enter the market.” Mr Pitt said in the State Budget the government boosted the $15,000 Queensland First Home Owner’s Grant by $5,000 for 12 months from July 1 for newly built dwellings up to $750,000. “This will not only help more people buy their first home, it will also help stimulate activity in the building industry and create new direct or indirect jobs and secure exiting ones,” he said.
Treasurer Curtis Pitt says the latest ABS figures show approvals for new houses in Queensland up 2.5% on a trend basis over the year to June. Mr Pitt said the results underlined the timeliness of the Palaszczuk Government’s Queensland First Home Owner’s Grant that now provided $20,000 to people buying newly constructed dwellings worth up to $750,000. “Across the state, building approvals overall were 2.4% lower over the year because of the anticipated tapering off in demand for home units and apartments,” he said. “While approvals for houses rose 2.5% over the year there was a 6.8% decline in approvals for units and apartments. “However, the overall value of residential building approvals in Queensland was $1.17 billion in June 2016 which is up from $1.11 billion a year ago.

In the Garden with Brownie
Those naughty nematodes
A reader wants to know what she can do about nematodes in the veggie garden. Nematodes – or Eel Worms – are minute creatures which live in everything … and I mean everything. Scientists say that if you took away everything living and the soil, but left the nematodes, you’d still be able to see what everything looked like because there are so many nematodes on and in everything. Most of the 20,000 plus species of nematodes are perfectly harmless, but some – like the parasitic root knot nematode – can create serious problems in the garden. The nodule which forms on roots is due to the immature nematode burrowing into the plant root to feed on the plant sap. In response, the plant forms a gall which severely reduces the effectiveness of what the root should be doing. This damage also allows other diseases – such as fungi and viruses – to infect the plant, causing even more problems for the gardener. Root knot nematodes prefer warm moist soils – meaning that they are prevalent in our climatic zone. Many plant types are affected by them, but it usually causes most damage to the solanaceae family (potatoes, eggplant, capsicum, chilli and tomatoes), cucumbers, melons and pumpkins, strawberries, peaches, bananas, grapes, passionfruit, pineapples and pawpaw. The most effective approach is to build up the good guys which eat the bad guys. Keeping the organic matter content high will create the perfect conditions for predatory nematodes which attack the parasitic root knot nematodes. So dig in composted organic matter whenever you can and keep the surface mulched with sugar cane or mushroom compost. Next, rotate your crops so that the nematodes don’t have a chance to build up by feasting on one of their favoured groups, season upon season. You can also grow what is known as a ‘break crop’. This is something like a grass crop (rye, oats or millet) that the nematodes can’t feed on and so you starve them. Lastly, sow and grow a green manure bio-fumigant. This is where you grow something like mustard (or even marigolds) and dig it back into the soil once it flowers. The decaying leaf matter releases isothiocyanate gases which fumigate the soil, killing the nematodes and their eggs. But keep the soil moist or the effect stops working. Companion planting with mustard or marigold won’t make a difference, as it is the decaying leaves that do the work, rather than the living plants.
Gardeners support community
At the Maleny Garden Club’s recent meeting held at the Old Witta School House, the group presented cheques to a number of local community groups from the funds raised at this year’s Gardening on the Edge. Club President, Marnie Trass said this year they had a fabulous response from visitors, particularly on the Saturday where they had ‘spring like weather’. “This year was one of our best in terms of the funds that were generated which we are very proud of as we enjoy being able to support the important work that so many local groups undertake in our community,” she said. This year they presented funds to the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, the Maleny Rural Fire Service, the Maleny SES, the Maleny Ambulance, Blackall Range Care, the Men’s Shed, as well as the Chaplains at both the Maleny State School and Maleny High school. “We have a fantastic group of members and volunteers that contributed so much to making the event a success, and straight after the event each year, we are already looking at what to do and how we can improve on next year,” Marnie said. Each year the event brings together a real mix of properties to share with gardening enthusiasts. This year was no exception, from a suburban house garden that is still relatively new, to the spectacular grounds of the Agapanthus Farm on Mountain View Road. If you have been along to Gardening on the Edge previously, make sure you lock it into your diary for June 2017.

Pointed – leaf Hovea
Even carrots can be attacked by root knot nematodes
Hovea acutifolia Hovea is a beautiful, purple pea shrub, currently flowering in our National Parks, forests and along our road sides. Seldom noticed until in flower, it then becomes a species that everyone wants in their garden. Hovea is an open branched shrub which seldom grows beyond two metres. Leaves are long and narrow with a smooth, green upper surface, but a rusty and hairy under side. Even when flowering has finished and the lime green seed pods appear, this plant is still an attractive addition to the home garden. The seed pods remain on the plant until the summer months when they can be heard to ‘pop’ releasing the seed which germinates readily. King parrots have been noticed feeding on the mature seed pods.

From the churches Chris Johnson - Glasshouse Country Baptist Church I remember growing up that everyone seemed to have a choko vine. On paper there was a great solution. They were a great cheap source of food padding. My mum reckoned that the choko took on the flavour of whatever is was with. I have to disagree - unless paper or rubber is considered flavours - but back in the day, chokos were a cheap source of food. And grow - they thrived on neglect. I don’t know how many chook sheds, outhouses, fences and clothes lines were destroyed by the sheer weight of a choko vine. Back in the day, there were both a pest and a blessing. In one of his parables Jesus said that the kingdom of God was like a mustard bush - it started off small but ends up taking over the yard and birds come and nest in its branches. In Jesus’ day mustard was one of the main ingredients of cooking. But people never grew it at home. Instead they planted it out on the farms or fields. Why? Because it was the equivalent of my parent’s choko vine. You needed it but it just took over the yard. This is the incredible thing - Jesus likens his rule to that of a weed - a weed that starts small but is

unstoppable and seems to take over everything in its path. I draw encouragement from this parable. For a start Jesus is saying that the kingdom he establishes will keep on growing and getting into places people don’t expect. Today most of the west doesn’t think about Jesus or if they do, they think of his as an irrelevancy. Other countries are trying to squash any mention of Jesus and expunge him from the world’s history. But Jesus is saying there is no escape, like a choko vine, the kingdom Jesus established will keep growing and moving. To many people it would be a weed and unwelcome just like a choco vine in the backyard, but for many others it will be a source of relief and joy. I have a friend who loves chocos and for him to have a choko vine in his yard - it would be a dream come true. I hate the taste of chokos; I’d rather eat cardboard. I do not want a choko vine in my yard. And so it is that for many people they do not want anything to do with Jesus but others want to have something to do with Jesus. At the end of the day, Jesus tells us that his kingdom will win - like a choko vine it will grow and nothing can stand in its way. Jesus reminds us that although we might not want anything to do with Him, ultimately there is no escaping Him.

Sport Beerwah Ladies Golf
Contributed by Pam Marsden On Thursday, August 11: There were 54 ladies who took part in a President vs Captain stroke event where the field was divided in two with the sides representing either the President or the Captain. Carolyn Chestnut (71 nett) was runner-up. Individual winners for the Captain's team were Barb Drury with 67 nett on a countback from Sue Greentree who was runner-up also on 67 nett. Congratulations ladies on wonderful scores. Nearest the Pin shots went to Margaret Zonca on 2, Hope Hannah on 5 and Barb Whitfield on 16. Sue Greentree had the best second shot on 18. The ladies welcome visitors, new members and beginning players to the weekly competitions. Any enquiries including lesson bookings should be directed initially to the Pro Shop on 5494 6611.
Contributed by Deb Ives On Thursday, July 28 and Friday, July 29, Beerwah State School had 55 athletes compete at the annual Glasshouse District Carnival. It was a great two days with our students demonstrating excellent behaviour and sportsmanship. Beerwah
State School achieved 7th overall and now has five athletes progressing to the next round of competition at the Regional Athletics Carnival in September. Congratulations also to Bailey, Caleb, Baylee, Kayla and Tayla who have been selected in the Glasshouse District Athletics Team.

Maleny Bowls Club
Contributed by Ian Hanson The last of the 2016 Championship Matches were played Saturday with both resulting in close scores. The Ladies Singles between Jane Burgess and Margaret Ginns was very close with the lead changing several times, until the last end Margaret took the necessary 3 shots to win 25 shots to 23. Great game, ladies. The Men’s Triples final also resulted in a 2 shot margin. Ian Porter/Curly Petersen/ Ian Hansen led of 20 shots to 8 by the 15th end. But John Lewis/Miles Allen/ Warwick Moody then made a Lazarus-like recovery to win 5 of the remaining 6 ends for a 23 to 21 victory. It was a great Championship Competition – many thanks to Men’s President, Allan Cook and to his helpers Curly Petersen and Graeme Glover. Tuesday’s winners with two wins +15 were Dennis Kyling and Ray Oldfield. Once again the jackpot wasn’t won and will now be $140.00 plus this Tuesday.

AUGUST 17 2016
Wednesday’s Twilight Bowls winning Teams were: Ezi Riders, Tutors, Bom Diggety, Muskateers, Mavericks and Mighty 10. The individual winners were: Lead - Beverley Heading, 2nd - John Doe and Skip - Joe Walters. The Touchers went to Ray Ellanolt, Dave Edwards and Heather Snel. The lucky Money Board winners were Beth Glover and Steve Ellett. Friday’s Scroungers winners were Dennis Kyling, Jim King, Scott Alexander and Gary Darcy. Four sponsors’ prize winners were present in Allan Cook for Top of the Range Meats, Jim King for Sukhothai Restaurant, Doug McGufficke for Day Lillies and Scott Alexander for Maleny Dairies. Scott then made it a treble for the afternoon by winning the Money Board. This week there is Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, the New Zealand visitors and Twilight Challenge Wednesday, Scroungers Friday, Inter-Services (Apex, Lions, Rotary) Day Sunday – and then the Monthly Jackpot Pairs on Monday, August 22.
The Wildcats were up against the Peregian Parakeets. When the first set takes one hour you knew you were in for a long hard battle. Great tennis on both sides and it was neck and neck the whole day. But there can only be one winner and it wasn’t the Wildcats. Final score was 4 sets each and 35-36 games. Yes, one game the difference. Next time Pauline, Annie, Stacey and Libby will be victorious! Social tennis: Monday, 8.00am and Saturday 1.00pm, all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.
Contributed by Gail Denver In regular club games on Thursday, Nick Cram 17 defeated Vince Carbery and Ken Barker 11, whilst Kath Smith had a 9-all draw with Jan Barnes, our visitor from Launceston. Sunday afternoon play saw Sally Adams 9 just pip Helen Andrews 8. Five of our members are travelling to Headland/Buderim for the Golden Oldies this week, and as fourteen point games are played in this competition, it was decided to practise this format on the weekend with the following results: Robert Elliot 8 v Ken Barker 5; Vince 11 v Kath 9: Nick 9 v Val Carbery 4; Kath 6 v Robert 4; Ken 10 v Val 9 and Vince 10 v Nick 9. We look forward to enjoying our day at the H/B club. This Wednesday our Div 1 and 2 players will be off to Caloundra for the final round of pennant play for the hotly contested Lochwood Shield. Regular association croquet coaching is held on Saturday mornings; and the Range Croquet Club at the Maleny Showgrounds always welcomes new players at any time, with coaching and mallets available for beginners. Contact Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.
Super Strawberry Round 7
The competition is exciting now, with the bar raised again this week. The heaviest strawberry in Round 7, entered by John Allen’s Oaklands Farms, weighed 178 grams – the best so far in the 2016 contest. Oaklands won both categories this round, with the same entry doubling up to win the most unusual category. An interesting example of versatility: this entry looked like a large strawberry from one angle, but turn it over … and other attributes were revealed. The stewards declared it looked like “the biggest tongue you have ever seen.” All entries this week were over 140 grams, with two over 160 grams, so we are seeing a definite trend to heavier weights all round. Is this a result of the weather? Or are growers developing better identification techniques to stay in the competition? Only one more chance to find the 2016 Super Strawberry: Round 8 is open now, and closes this Friday, August 19 at 4.00pm. The prize for the overall winner is a dinner for two at the Beerwah Hotel Bistro. Thanks again to the Coochin Creek Co-op and Beerwah Hotel for their support in running this novelty competition leading up to the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival which is on this Saturday, August 20, at Beerwah Sports Ground. This is the annual fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland. www.gcnews.com.au
Beerwah Bulldogs
Contributed by Head Coach Mark Brandon The Beerwah Bulldogs Senior Men’s Division 2 team has taken out the minor premiership after winning 19 of its 20 round games. The only loss was a 28 to 22 second round match against the Rob Brough-coached Kawana team, who we had beaten 24 - 10 in the first round. The team has managed an average of just over 50 points per game, while conceding just over 5 points per game. The defensive attitude of the team is what will hopefully carry the team to the main prize – the 2016 premiership – come season’s end. On individual performances, Nathan Robards, the left winger, has scored a staggering 44 tries from 20 games, to top the try scoring list, followed by Jake Grice on 19 tries. Taoho Kake, the halfback, has scored 218 points to take out top points scorer award. While these are great milestones, it has been an unconditional effort by the whole

squad, led by their captain Adam Grice, vice captain Dan Kidd and the experience of other senior players within the team (Graham Green and Dan Grice) who have led the team around the park throughout the long season. Last Saturday, Beerwah hosted Caboolture Number 1 at home in their first semi final and came away with a resounding 43 – 4 win, which now gives the squad a week off, and they will play either Mary Valley Stags, or PomonaCooran in two weeks time in the preliminary final, venue TBA. While there is still a long way to go, this team has played some scintillating matches this year, and has had a great following from its supporters and support staff throughout 2016. The grand final is set down for September 3 at the new mini stadium at Maroochydore. Hopefully this team can make it through to that day, and make the town proud of its achievements in 2016.

Glasshouse Bowls Club
Contributed by Dave Hayes Tuesday, August 9 - The ladies second division team played at home against Caboolture Lakes. Overall Glasshouse went down by 1 shot. On Wednesday, the ladies played Caboolture Lakes away. In another close game they went down by 3 shots. Next week they play Solander Lakes. Wednesday, August 10 - Social Bowls. Noelle Dean, Lyn Griffiths and Warren Blackbourne def Graham Condie, Russell Walmsley and John McSwain 26-15. Chris Dougan and Dave Clarke def Maz Idle and Dennis Hume 25-14. Thursday, August 11 - A great afternoon was had by everyone with a full green of bowlers. Winners were Warren Blackbourne and Ross Siegle with 2 wins + 48. R/Up were Clive Sinton and Kevin Beasley with a + 24 in the second game. In Pennants Fifth Division played at home against Bribie Island. Overall it was a draw, 34 all. Next week’s game is away to Beachmere. Recently we held our meeting to determine which comps we will play in from January 2017. It was decided we will enter Premier League Sevens and Hinterland. The Sevens will be played in place of Super Challenge. For those bowlers that would have played Super Challenge, you may be interested in this comp. It is mixed, so men and ladies can both play together, which is a great idea as the club was aware how hard it was to have a ladies’ team in two comps last season. Expression of interest sheets are up at the club now. We need to have numbers done by mid-October to register. In the Hinterland Local League we need at least 11 players plus reserves for the men and 5 players plus reserves for the ladies. As of October 1, next year’s bowls memberships will be open to pay. This year the new fee will be $85.00. You have until the end of December to pay. Saturday, September 3 at 9.00am is our Annual General Meeting. Committee positions will be open for election for 2016-17. I really hope we have some members ready to step up and help. It’s not hard, the more people we have the less work it will be for each member on the board. Remember, without a board there is no club. If you plan to stand for a position you can ask for a nomination form at the office. Our Mixed Fours Spring Carnival will be held Saturday and Sunday, October 15 and 16. Nomination forms are available at our bowls office, $55.00 per person includes green fees and lunch for both days. Should be a great weekend! Nine teams are already down. We need more bowling members to put teams together. Bowls coaching is on from Sunday 10.30am to 12.00noon every week. Bowlers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Come along for a roll, it is great fun. www.gcnews.com.au

Just for Laughs Stay cool William
A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his badly behaved grandson. He has his hands full with the child screaming for sweets, biscuits, and all sorts of things. The grandfather is saying in a controlled voice: "Easy William, we won't be long." Another outburst and she hears the grandfather calmly say, "it's okay William, just a couple more minutes and we'll be out of here. Hang in there!" At the checkout the little horror is throwing items out of the trolley. Grandfather says again in a controlled voice, "William, relax buddy, don't get upset. We'll be
home in five minutes, stay cool William." Very impressed, the woman goes outside to where the grandfather is loading is groceries and the boy into the car. She says, "it's none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don't know how you did it. That whole time you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying that things would be okay. William is very lucky to have you as his grandfather." "Thanks", says the grandfather, "but I am William, this little pups name is Kevin." Submitted by Brian, Glass House Mountains
