Hi Everyone
W
hen I write my column for the final edition of the year – it is always with mixed feelings. I know I need to focus on acknowledging another great year and thanking everyone who has contributed to making that happen, then the school kid in me feels like it is ‘break up day’ and soon I will be free to live a life not restricted by deadlines for the next few weeks and then I become very distracted!! So I am channelling my ‘very mature self’ feelings and want to focus on saying thanks to all the wonderful people that are part of my life as an editor that makes the role so enjoyable and rewarding. A big part of this is obviously because of Brownie (who does an amazing job of doing all of the things that I am not so great at) and making us a strong management team for the paper. To all of our staff who take great pride in their jobs and the paper and like being part of the team that brings this great community newspaper out each week (except for the next three weeks when we are all taking a break).
Everyone who advertises with the paper – without your support through your advertising dollars so many of the stories we bring each week would not be able to be included. Thanks also to the many locals who contribute your diverse stories, reports, letters, photos, ideas, and updates about what is going in our community. And of course you the readers, for embracing what we do, loving the read and encouraging us by letting us know you like what we do. The team all receive plenty of kind words when we are out on the job, we get plenty of emails of thanks, cards or notes are dropped into the letterbox, and it is lovely to walking into the office and finding a jar of jam or honey, a couple of pineapples or a plate of homemade biscuits that someone has dropped in as a thank you! So before I get distracted and start googling ‘Things to Do in Tasmania’ again I just want to say thanks for appreciating, supporting, contributing to and generally being a part of what is becoming an endangered species – a ‘local independently owned real community newspaper’. Regards,

Coochin Creek Coop welcomes new Chairman very pleased to be able to hand over the reins to someone as competent and knowledgeable as Peter,” said Robert. “I know the future of the Coop is in very good hands … and I’ll still be there to do my bit as well.” Robert’s pedigree Peter Boyle congratulates as part of the Coop Robert Frizzo goes way back. His grandfather, Emidio Gabrielli was part of the founding process of the Coop back in 1936. Robert’s father Adriano Frizzo was a Director for many years. New Chairman Peter has a similar family connection, with his father Ron Boyle being a long-serving Board Director. Peter is a macadamia nut and lychee farmer from Beerwah, and is well respected within the industry. He is considered one of the region’s most innovative growers. “Peter is a very good choice for Chairman,” said Errol. “He is young, has good ideas, is confident and knows the local horticultural industry well.”
They say that all good things must come to an end and after 19 years as the Chairman of the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Cooperative, Robert Frizzo has decided to pass the baton onto some new blood. At last November’s AGM, Robert announced his intention to step back from being the Chairman – a position he has held since 1995 – and at the last Directors meeting, Peter Boyle was installed as the new Chairman. According to Errol Graham, General Manager of the Coop, Robert has been a strong guiding influence as Chairman. “Robert has been a very dedicated Board member and has given loyal service to the Coop for many, many years,” he said. “We are lucky to have had a stable and productive Board, and Robert’s leadership has played a large part in their success.” At the Coop’s recent Christmas function at Club Glass House, Robert was presented with a commemorative shield and a rather large cake. But Robert says that his involvement in the Coop will still remain as strong as ever, as he continues as a Board Director and will sit as Vice-Chairman. “I have really enjoyed my time and service as Chairman. I was lucky to have taken over from Quinto Porfiri all those years ago, and now I’m

Notable milestones include being born in the year World War 1 was declared, and helping out during World War II, wrapping dynamite explosives at Deer Park in Victoria. "Women had to do a lot of the male jobs while the men joined the war effort," Eileen recalls. "The dynamite was packaged in individual concrete bunkers except of course when electrical storms threatened." Eileen is one of eight children, with three surviving sisters, all aged between 90 and 97. "In my early 20s my older sister Thelma (now passed), who was an excellent dressmaker, often copied the styles from the movie stars of the day for me to wear to go dancing. "My sisters and I also appeared as extras in the making of the movie Pharlap which we loved. It brings Pet backGifts many & memories Toys of a bygone era," Eileen said. Eileen was born in Victoria and met the love of her life Edwin in 1943, having five children, four of whom are still surviving. Wayne has passed, Merle resides in Mooloolah, John is in outback Western Australia, Lew is in New Zealand and Bob lives and cares for Eileen at their Mooloolah acreage. There are now 14 grand children and 26 great grand children, most of whom flew in from all
around the country to celebrate the momentous occasion last Sunday. OUR Eileen credits her move to Mooloolah in 2003 for SEAFOOD IS her life longevity. FRESH NOT "I love the village atmosphere here plus I don't mind a shandy or two," she laughs. SNAP "I've also always had a very keen sense of humour and a positive outlook on life. I have FROZEN never let anything worry me. "I also get wonderful family support and care and that also makes all the difference."

Rack off, hairy legs This time of year is peak season for Funnel Web spiders, where the onset of heat and rain trigger a breeding response. Michael Ellwood from North Maleny found this large spider (pictured) on his front lawn after it appeared from a hole beside a tree stump. Dr Robert Raven, Queensland Museum’s Senior Curator (Arachnids) confirmed it to be a female Funnel Web – a Darling Downs or Toowoomba Funnel Web, to be correct. Funnel Web spiders are commonly found across the Blackall Ranges and foothills, and so it’s a good idea to be aware of them at this time of the year. Other Maleny-ites have also recently reported sightings and encounters. David Harbutt from Cloudwalk Estate, related how they had a near miss. “The wife found it in the kitchen at about 6.00am. She almost stood on it,” he said. Jane Caldwell, also from North Maleny told of a closer encounter. “My husband got bitten by one the other week. Sure are heaps about and they are very aggressive,” she said. Luckily for Jane’s husband it all went well … “It was a trip to Maleny hospital then an ambulance trip to Nambour hospital. All good now,” she said. Being Australia’s most deadly spider, it’s an interesting fact that their toxin only affects primates (that is, monkeys and man) and they are harmless to other animals, such as cats and
Creative future ahead
dogs. Their normal prey is vegetarian millipedes. The male spiders were thought to be much deadlier than the females, but recent research has found them both to be just as lethal as each other. Females generally don’t come out of their burrows unless disturbed by digging or flooding. On these summer nights, male spiders wander searching for a female. Then at dawn, males seek moist dark shelter under logs, in holes and amongst clumps of leaves. Funnel Webs are attracted to water and may be found in swimming pools. They are able to survive underwater for a couple of days. Contrary to popular belief, Funnel Webs cannot jump or leap and cannot climb smooth vertical surfaces, but they can and do climb rough walls or wood. Funnel webs can be mistakenly identified as other large spiders – like mouse spiders, trapdoor spiders and wolf spiders. So best to leave them all well alone. Although there have been 14 deaths from Funnel Web spider bites, there have been none since 1980 when an anti-venom was developed. To read a great factsheet on Funnel Web spiders, go to www.qm.qld.gov.au/Learning+Resources/ Resources# and do a search for ‘funnel web’.
By Lea Parkes Beerburrum’s Adrienne Heppel has married a lot of people, well as a marriage celebrant that’s what she does, and for Adrienne each ceremony she performs is special. However one recent wedding touched her just that little bit more. Held on the beach at Coolum just as the sun was rising she had the privilege of marrying Glass House Mountains local Neville Field to Cathy Condron the former co-ordinator at BADYAC (next to the Beerwah Skate Park). The reason that this particular couple’s ceremony was so special, was because Adrienne, along with the members of the ‘Glasshouse Country Festival Committee of 2012’, were all in the room when they met over the meeting table. It may not have been the most romantic setting, but both being talented artists they immediately had something in common, and the rest as they say is history. I am sure everyone that knows them will be wishing them well in their life together.

Beerwah artist De Greer-Yindimincarlie is set to launch a solo exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery which runs from December 17 through to January 25 entitled ‘Aspects of Me’. The expansive exhibition will showcase the range of artistic mediums that De employs to express her creativity, and features painting, film, music, textile design, an augmented reality piece and products featuring indigenous designs, as well as exhibition workshops and floor talks. The exhibition will showcase a number of De’s work including a textile section, which features clothing printed with her paintings, recycled material mats of indigenous designs, over 15 original paintings and even a distinctively individualised coffin. A number of multimedia displays incorporate her work at the exhibition, including a documentary featurette that discusses her latest album (her sixth album and third solo offering) as well as a documentary on the unique Bunya Guitar. One of the more innovative technological displays will be an augmented reality paddle. Gallery visitors can download an app that when the device is held over it, the paddle will explain the story behind the indigenous piece. De believes this is the first time this technology has been used for Indigenous artwork in Australia. As a fulltime commercial artist, De strives to spread her creative life over a number of industries. Seeking to apply her artistic resources to a diversity of creative outlets, she consistently
strives to find new and innovative ways to reach a broader audience. For example De will take a core painting and replicate and transfer it to a multitude of products such as cards, textiles, aboriginal mats and products like mouse mats and drink coasters. De started painting 12 years ago. “I believe if you want to carve your own road - you need to develop your own style,” she said. Accordingly De has sought to develop her own distinctive styles and motifs. The seed pod features heavily in her work as does a grid which can be seen to symbolise the urban artist in society; another distinctive style is her use of large chunks of colour - especially the ‘Pride’ colours. ‘Aspects of Me’ runs from December 17 until January 25 at the Caloundra Regional Galley, 22 Omrah Avenue Caloundra.

Steve Lee from Glasshouse Mountains Taxi Service is the person everyone wants to have in their back pocket. And quite rightly so. Steve recently won the Queensland Carers Great Service Award (Sunshine Coast Region) for his dedicated service, not only to the general public, but for his dedicated service to assisting family carers of the disabled and physically challenged. Steve won the award out of 11 nominations in the category and his award nominator, Pamela Watson of Maleny, could not be more humble or grateful for Steve's assistance. Pamela's husband Lucky, who is ex Air Force service personnel, needed help on three occasions and Steve offered his services on each occasion, sometimes under challenging situations. "He did everything without asking. I thought he deserved some recognition for the effort he made beyond the call. He's a really top bloke," she said. Pamela also deserves accolades, being Lucky's carer for five years, and now that he resides in Embracia in Glasshouse Country in Beerwah, Pamela volunteers her time in the facility's cafe. Steve said he was very surprised about the award, saying he would have done the same for anyone. "It is a great feeling, but I just try to do for everyone what they deserve and that is to be helpful to everyone," he said.

Carers Queensland regional team leader Kathryn Kelly said Carers Queensland had been running the awards for 11 years in recognition of the vital role community members play in improving the quality of life for all carers throughout the state. "Carers Queensland looks out for the health and wellbeing of unpaid family carers by providing workshops, support groups and information referrals to other agencies in the region," Kathryn said. "Steve went over and above what you would expect from a taxi service. Landsborough author, Jennifer Crane, has released the second children’s fiction novel in the Opal Dreaming series titled ‘Opal Dreaming - The Marble Horses’. The story is set in Ancient Athens and follows from ‘The Bronze Horses’, which is set on the Eurasian Steppes. The Opal Dreaming series traces the evolution of horses and riding from the Bronze Age to the modern Olympics, through the dreams of a 13-year-old Australian girl, Erin. Jennifer is an experienced horse rider and competitor. “Horses and horse riding have played a pivotal role in our own cultural advancement. “Many horse management and riding methods used centuries ago are still used today,” she said. “So my stories aim to meld the historical and modern to provide an understanding of equestrian knowledge in an entertaining format that children can relate to, and if they are riders themselves, use.” Jennifer’s first published work was ‘Spillover: A Memoir’ about the death of her horse to Hendra Virus in 2006. She has also had a number of her children’s short stories published and received minor awards for her writing. Jennifer is currently studying a Master of Letters in Creative Writing and Literature through Central Queensland University. Jennifer’s daughter, Jaclyn Crane, who is studying graphic design at Sunshine Coast University, has designed the cover artwork
Jaclyn Crane with her author mum Jennifer Crane for both ‘The Bronze Horses’ and ‘The Marble Horses’. Jaclyn recently won a highly competitive national student design award for an imaginary issue of the esteemed design industry publication, DG Magazine. The Opal Dreaming series books are available from Books of Buderim and Rosetta Books Maleny, Australian Writers Rock Eumundi Markets, direct from Jennifer and from Morris Publishing Australia at www. morrispublishingaustralia.com If you contact Jennifer directly to purchase the books for Christmas she is offering a special price of $10.00 each or both for $20.00. Captain to future politician? After graduating from Year 12 many students choose to take some time out and relax, this is not the case for Courtney Sinclair one of the 2014 school captains, at Glasshouse Country Christian College. Since finishing school Courtney has travelled to Canberra and met with Prime Minster Tony Abbott, and the speaker Bronwyn Bishop. Courtney, from Elimbah, was given the opportunity to address MPs in Parliament House after running second in the national ‘My First Speech Competition’. Federal member for Longman Wyatt Roy said he was delighted by her success, but not surprised. In July, the 17-year-old attended Mr Roy’s Longman Youth Leadership Forum – a two-day self-development workshop. Courtney has since become one of the program’s inaugural ambassadors. “I knew Courtney had leadership potential from the moment I met her,” Mr Roy said. “She has a real desire and drive to make a difference in the world. “I congratulate her on a terrific speech, which was well-researched and full of passion.” Imagining herself as Longman’s next MP, Courtney opened her three-minute video entry with a reference to the electorate’s roots and gender politics. “Politics are as much the concern of women as men,” she said. “There can be no true democracy where only one sex is directly represented in parliament.” “These words are that of Irene Longman, after whom my electorate was named. Irene was the first female member for the parliament of Queensland who was elected in 1929,” Courtney said. Courtney went on to cover key local issues such as sustainable development, unemployment, education and mental health. Promoted by House of Representatives Speaker Bronwyn Bishop, the My First Speech Competition was in its third year and open to all Year 10-12 students. We might just see Courtney back on the GCNews Elected Reps pages in the future? Prime Minister Tony Abbott congratulates Courtney Sinclair

Assistance is given to the poor and needy in both Australia and Nepal. The charity was originally established by Sunshine Coast woman Suzanne Kupiack after having travelled to Nepal in 2000 and witnessing the widespread poverty. Wanting to help impoverished children, as well as the elderly, she founded the organisation in 2001. Starting with a donation collection of clothing, shoes and school items to send to a remote Nepalese village, the charity evolved into the community op shop in Kenilworth. From here the generosity of community donations meant a children’s home was able to be established in Kathmandu. Shed the Light wishes to thank all their members, supporters and volunteers over the past 15 years. It has been a long and fulfilling journey for many people; not only the children and elderly that they have assisted, but also for those who have been rewarded through their involvement with Shed the Light’s children’s home and handicrafts workshop. This year has been a challenging year with the passing of Suzanne Kupiack and the move to a new and more accessible location. The older children are now leaving the home to move onto further education and/ or employment and provide a shining example of the worthiness of the organisation as they have also become actively involved in community projects. Currently, another 18 youngsters have now been taken in, and settled into their new home and school. Fourteen sewing trainee ladies are working within the Nepal Women Empowerment project to continue to make bags and clothing to send to Australia. They make items to sell to the two shops as well as wholesale to other outlets. If you are interested in becoming involved either as a volunteer or member, please call into one of our shops or email: shedthelightinc@gmail.com. www.gcnews.com.au

Koala food trees flourishing Almost 12 months ago, the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) received a grant for just over $7,000 from the ‘Everyone’s Environment’ program, to plant koala food trees on a property at Glass House Mountains. And looking at the paddock full of hundreds of healthy saplings, the State Government’s money has been well spent, according to local state member Andrew Powell when he revisited the site recently. “It is wonderful to see community groups like GMAN making the most of funding through the ‘Everyone’s Environment’ grant program by establishing practical projects that will greatly benefit our environmental landscape and local wildlife,” said Andrew. “My visit with GMAN showed the amazing progress that has been made with their Koala Tree Project which is focused on providing an ongoing supply of fodder for koalas in care. “Well done to Gwen, Yvonne, Peter and the team on their commitment to delivering the best outcomes for the Glass House Mountains environment.” With the help of local volunteers, and students from Unity College who did the original planting, the 30cm high tube stock are now flourishing, towering to be over two metres tall. Yvonne Schnick, Gwen Malcolm and Peter Kluver from GMAN, show Minister for the Environment Andrew Powell how well the koala food tree saplings have grown

mouth-watering food prepared by cook Aroha (MJ) and several have chosen to have a game of lawn bowls, creating a lot of good natured bantering and friendly competition. The Glasshouse Country Legacy Ladies, who fondly call Club Glass House home, enjoyed a day of singing and dancing at their Christmas party last Tuesday, entertained by Bob on his accordion. President Mary Southern and Vice President Elizabeth Goodall were presented with a plaque on behalf of all the ladies in appreciation of the funds they raised for Legacy during Legacy Week. Management and staff would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support and we look forward to a bigger and brighter year next year. Pat Fuller, who founded the market in 2007 and still runs it, thinks that shopping at a Farmers’ market gives us one of the best opportunities to source the freshest and healthiest produce around. At this market, the vegetables have been in the ground only hours before sale, the fruit is in season, the animals are raised using sustainable techniques, and are slaughtered humanely. Most of the ingredients for the value-added products too will have been sourced and made locally. Regular stalls include seasonal fruit and vegetables, organic meats, eggs, vegetable and herb seedlings, mulch hay, flowers and a great range of value added products – jams, preserves, honey, cakes (delicious chocolate and some gluten free), pies (baked at the market), bread, honey and so much more. One of the success stories of the market is Ben Johnston who was born and raised in Flaxton. He left the range 14 years ago only to return to his roots again to invest in his big vision – Mapleton Falls Farm. The 18-acre farm is in close proximity to the national park and has the perfect growing environment for vegetables and fruit. Deep rich red soil, aspect and sunlight, and water from the property’s dams allow Ben to grow organic food of the highest quality. Beans, beetroot, carrots, corn, tomatoes, kale, silverbeet, onions and garlic are just a few of the vegetables being harvested from the first market gardens. Ben is very proud of the first season’s harvest. “It is locally grown, organic and we only sell what we grow,” he said. Mapleton Falls Farm will be at the Blackall Range Growers’ Market this Saturday, December 20. Start the day with a market café breakfast, (vegetarian available) and a locally blended coffee. The market is just five minutes from Maleny and is well sign posted on the day with plenty of free parking. It’s safe for children to play in the grounds, and there’s a friendly community atmosphere with live music. The market is held every 3rd Saturday of the month in all weather. Be rewarded for buying locally this Christmas By Trevor Taylor The Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains has organised a prize draw to reward those that shop local. There are over 50 businesses in all six Hinterland towns, Mooloolah, Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass house, Peachester and Beerburrum will be giving out free tickets to go into the massive prize draw. We believeiIf we don't buy locally there will be no shops left in our area, there will be little or no employment in our area, and the convenience of shopping locally will be gone forever! Do we want that? Please think about it, when you are looking to buy something, please give our local shops the chance to help you, everyone will enjoy the experience!! Until Christmas, as well as feeling good about shopping locally, you will also have the pleasure of being in the draw for a free raffle, with prizes being donated by Australia Zoo (family passes, and a Tiger Experience) and a beautiful painting donated by Mrs Cameron, painted by Brian Allison. Look for the flyer in the window of the local shop you are in, and please ask the person serving you if they are participating in the Promotion.

Local filmmakers receive funding By Sonia Clark
The Maleny Film Co-operative has just received funding through the Sunshine Coast Council’s Regional Arts Development Funding (RADF) scheme which supports artists and arts and cultural activities in local communities. The co-operative, which consists of six local filmmakers, received the funds towards the initial research and development of producing three short films about Dementia under the working title of ‘Dementia Around Us’. Cr Jenny McKay who holds the Community Programs Portfolio says, “the funding benefits many creative projects while also enriching the arts industry on the Sunshine Coast.” The Maleny Film Co-operative provides a creative and supportive network for its members, and has previously received financial assistance from the Maleny Film Society, Sunshine Coast Council and the Gambling Fund to develop projects and purchase professional equipment. Past projects have included films highlighting local stories with archival footage, documentaries, short and feature films, as well as films about the environment. Three of the co-operative’s filmmakers, Christine Elcoate, Jill Morris, and Jess Begun received assistance to produce the scripts. Each of the five minute films will be based on the personal insights and experiences of the filmmakers. Jill and Christine will look at dementia from the carer’s perspective using the poignancy of drama rather than documentary. Fluctuations in the condition are the most challenging part for most carers and sufferers, and this will be explored in Jill’s script along with the message that when dementia patients are treated with loving care, respect and patience, they can live very happily. Jess’s script will focus on a friend who cares for her mother and through incorporating art and music will examine the positive role that the creative arts can play. Dementia is clearly an important story as local communities are collectively ageing and a number of friends and community members of the filmmakers are personally affected by dementia. No doubt the films will be supportive to those touched by dementia and the outcomes developed from these scripts will be well received throughout the local community.

Help Jake fulfil his boxing dreams
Jake Molloy (14) is an up and coming young boxer from Landsborough and winner of a National Golden Gloves championship last August. Recently he attended two regional development camps put together by Boxing Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport. During these camps he was recognised as having real potential by the national development coach, according to Jake’s trainer, former World Champion Brett ‘Handful’ Smith from Handful Boxing Club at Landsborough. “They were so impressed that Jake has been invited to a high performance camp run by Boxing Australia's head coach Kevin Smith aimed at junior and youth athletes who have the ability to possibly represent Australia at next year’s Junior/Youth Games held in Russia,” said Brett. “This trip is self-funded and we are asking big hearted locals to help raise some funds for the opportunity of a lifetime for Jake. “To help Jake on his way, we are holding raffles at the Landsborough Hotel between 1.00pm - 2.00pm on Saturday, December 13 and 20 and January 3, 10, 17, with fantastic prizes being donated by Beerwah Meats and the Landsborough Hotel. “Jake will be there to meet people, so come on down and meet a future champion.” If you would like to support a local Landsborough lad make his sporting dreams come true, get along to the Landsborough Hotel and buy some raffle tickets. Any sponsors wishing to help Jake can contact Brett on 0427 665 769.

Is your gardening being interrupted by discomfort? After serving Beerwah over the past 5 years, one thing I’ve learned is this region loves gardening! Another thing I’ve learned is that gardening can be extremely stressful on your spine. People often ask “how did my spine get this way? I didn’t do anything to hurt it!” While trauma or accidents are a common cause of spinal subluxation, by far the most common cause is an accumulation of the stresses we put on our spines each day. When that accumulation reaches a level that the body can no longer adapt to, we get a symptom. There are usually warning signs along the way, such as stiffness in the morning or a minor niggle that seems to go away once you get moving. But if these warning signs are ignored, guess what happens? A major breakdown … massive back pain … days off from work … missing out on things you enjoy because it hurts too much … relationship stress because people in pain are quite grumpy.
Beerwah – 5494 0499
Get the picture? Your spine is pretty important! This is why our mission is to provide the best possible chiropractic care to correct spinal subluxations, and also the best possible advice to avoid re-creating these problems in the future, so you can live your best life pain-free, naturally. If gardening or any of your other daily tasks and hobbies aren’t as easy as they used to be, call Dr Braxton at Adjust to Life Chiropractic on 5494 0499.

Voice coaching lessons for men
Community News Great solution to the call of nature By Greg Brown When the fella’s of the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed were offered their own permanent workshop at Glasshouse Country Care, out on Peachester Road, they were really pleased to have their own purpose built facility. They could immediately see many positive opportunities. Having a building away from the main Glasshouse Country Care facilities and administration centre, meant that they could be as noisy as they liked, and it wouldn’t impact on anyone else. However, the one downside would be that ‘quickly nipping to the loo’ would take the blokes a bit of time to walk over to the main buildings. So one of the group’s members Peter Kluver, came up with an excellent idea of getting a ‘thunderbox’ right next to the shed. The next job on Peter’s to-do list was to make contact with the Clivus Multrum company (they make waterless composting toilets). He was pleased to find out that the company would happily support them with a new ‘khazi’ free of charge. All the blokes had to do was to set it up. Not only did the good people from Clivus Multrum give them the ‘long drop’, they also gave them the raised outhouse to go with it.
So, after much engineering discussion and many plans drawn up for ramp access to the ‘lav’, all is going well with the completed ‘privy’ having been installed, christened and functioning perfectly. It must be a comfort for the blokes to know that the ‘dash to the dunny’ is a thing of the past. Clivus Multrum (www clivusmultrum.com.au) is a family owned Australian company providing environmentally smart and cost-effective, waterless and chemical-free composting toilets for domestic and commercial use.
The Sunshine Statesmen Barbershop chorus will once again present free voice training sessions for men in the unique barbershop four-part A cappella style. The sessions will be conducted by a professional coach but will be free of charge over the six week period. These will be held at the Buderim Uniting Church Hall at 1 Gloucester Road on Wednesday nights commencing with a no obligation come and see introductory night from 7.00pm to 9.00pm on February 11. The ability to read music is not essential and CD's are being used for some of the training process. If, after the training, you are impressed with barbershop and feel you would like to sing with us, we are very happy to help you toward full membership. We would like to get an idea of numbers so if possible please book with Bob Rutter 0405 119 019 or Paul Minnis on 0411 520 310 so that you can satisfy that long held dream and express your creative abilities. And your wife said you couldn't sing!

USC to host all day Q&A
The University of the Sunshine Coast will expand its annual Options Q&A event to a fullday format on Friday, December 19, in response to demand from prospective students. Eight hundred people attended the 2013 Options evening, including school leavers, family members and mature-aged students. USC Admissions and Recruitment Coordinator Cindy O’Connell encouraged people to drop in to the USC Sippy Downs campus any time between 9.00am and 5.00pm on December 19 to get one-on-one advice about enrolling to study in 2015. Campus tours also will be held at 12.00noon and 4.00pm. “USC staff will be available to chat about QTAC preferences, study programs, the admissions process, fees and scholarships,” said Cindy. Guests will be welcomed at a marquee on the grassed area outside Building C and directed by student ambassadors to their area of interest in buildings across campus. Seminars on ‘surviving the first year of uni’ will be held in that building’s Lecture Theatre 7. “Just before Christmas is an important time for prospective students making decisions about next year, with OP scores for Year 12s out on 20 December,” Ms O’Connell said. “The Options Q&A event will help people reconfirm their study choices, get the finer details, or gain inspiration to study at USC next year. “University staff will also be available on Monday 22 December, Tuesday 23 December and Wednesday 24 (days and dates don’t match)December for further queries.” To register, go to www.usc.edu.au/options

Do your kids have ongoing physical or emotional issues? Are they just not thriving as well as you would like? Now is a great time to make use of the school holiday break and really address any ongoing health issues your child may have. As a highly qualified health practitioner, Kaz and the team at Soulqi have the knowledge and skills to assess and effectively treat a wide range of childhood issues from newborns with colic to toddlers with digestive issues, sleep disturbances and other childhood issues like tonsillitis, coughs and colds. Behavioural problems and teenage issues can also be addressed. Kaz tailors all treatments specifically to the individual needs of your child by using shonishin tools (Japanese paediatric acupuncture), acupuncture, cupping and herbs and supplements. Mitchell Ward (pictured) is a 13-year-old from Maleny who has been getting treatment for chronic sinus. After an initial intensive series of weekly treatments, Mitchell now comes in for a monthly top up treatment and his condition has dramatically improved. Kaz takes time to build up trust and no acupuncture needles are used until the child is completely comfortable. The clinic will be open until Christmas and then Monday, December 29 and Tuesday, December 30 from 7.00am until 3.00pm. The Clinic will then reopen on January 5. Healthcare rebates are available with children’s treatments $30.00 for 30 minutes.

Beerwah’s first charity fun run event On Sunday, December 7 the Beerwah 5000 was held. It was a 5k run / walk and kids 2k family run, with over 300 participants in total, with the beautiful weather, fantastic atmosphere, and community support, it was a massive success. The event was organised by founders of the ‘Free’ Glasshouse Mountains Running & MTB Group, Matt and Monique Montague. Matt said it all began by them wanting to do something special for one of their runners who is currently suffering from cancer, and to celebrate her love of running. From the event they raised $5,000 for ‘The Forgotten cancers Project’. This is a Cancer Council project that focuses on rare cancers, the people who suffer from these have a lower chance of survival as so little is known about their diseases.
Beerwah CWA
“While the storms leading up to it may have scared a few people off, everyone who participated from the elite runners to the casual walkers, said it was a fantastic course and the atmosphere was amazing,” Matt said. “We were fortunate to have Melanie Panayiotiou, a Commonwealth Games Marathon Runner, and vet from Australia Zoo, to support our first event. She’s been really supportive throughout the organising of the race and even arranged for the Zoo to be part of it too. “We were totally overwhelmed by all the local sponsors who didn’t hesitate to support this event, and everyone is already talking about next year, when we plan to include a few longer distances to choose from. “Our aim is to host this every year raising money for different causes,” he said. The biggest team challenge was won by Team RMA (Running Mums Australia) with over 38 runners, who kindly donated their winnings to ‘The Forgotten Cancers Project’. “A big thank you must go to Stephen Pitt and his family from Hinterland Sports who were one of Beerwah 5000 main sponsors, and also to Maxine from Attention Traffic Services who spent countless hours preparing for road closure / detours all from the goodness of her heart, and to everyone who ran, supported, volunteered, and helped make this event a huge success,” Matt said.
Contributed by Deb Ives The Beerwah CWA would like to express their sincere thanks to many, all that contributed to the success of our Christmas Twilight Markets. Firstly to Linda at The Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall for housing us for the second year running, to Westpac Beerwah, Bargain Max, Beerwah IGA, Sue Black Exclusive Hair Studio, and Beerwah Hotel for all of their support. A special thank you to all of Santa's helpers (you know who you are!) and to Ilia from Beerwah Photographics for taking our photos. The winning raffle tickets were drawn on the night. Winning tickets were Edith ticket 54A black club, Shirley ticket 70E blue club, and C. Dobbs ticket 58E blue club. Lastly, to all of the wonderful local community who braved the rain and came to shop! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas from us all at the Beerwah CWA.

I give a moo for mooloolah Give it a go and keep the heart of Mooloolah beating Christmas family show
Mooloolah State School and community came together on December 9 for a fantastic Christmas family show. The Christmas concert was a story of time travel across time and cultures, to explore the meaning of Christmas in different contexts; and the overwhelming message, still so relevant today, was a wish and hope for peace and love. Numerous raffle prizes were drawn throughout the night, all made possible by the generous support of the Mooloolah business community. A very big thank you goes to Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy, White’s IGA, Mooloolah Computers, Mooloolah Beauty Spot, Mooloolah Hair Studio, Mooloolah Valley Real Estate, Mooloolah Meats, Mooloolah Valley Hair, BP Mooloolah, Mooloolah Valley Mechanical, Bellingham Maze, Beerwah Hotel, Beefy’s Pies, Schultz Toomey O’Brien, Maximise Health & Fitness, Ginger Factory, Australia Zoo, Mooloolah Valley Newsagency,
Generous support
At the recent Mooloolah State School Christmas Concert there was a special presentation made by Ruth Zerner of Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy. For the third consecutive year she presented two sponsorship packages to the Scripture Union Summer Splash leadership camp at Mudjimba in December. This year’s very excited successful applicants were Mary Pettingill and Emerald Stewart. Both girls are extremely thankful to Ruth for this wonderful opportunity to attend this camp, and
Mooloolah Valley Post Office and Mooloolah Valley Mitre 10. The Mooloolah Valley Lions generously provided their barbecue trailer and volunteers who cooked and served a happy, hungry crowd, and the school sends a very big thank you to these wonderful people. The Mooloolah State School P&C executive and helpers, and Chappy Mark and Jen Brennan (tuckshop convener), worked long and hard behind the scenes to prepare for and to support the evening, with working bees, food preparation and serving, prize-raising, and so much more! Mooloolah State School sends a big thank you to all these people for their generous ongoing support at this and all events throughout the year. The Christmas concert and year’s end culminated in a brilliant fireworks display that lit up the skies over the school oval and reflected all the joy in the upturned faces of the children. What a great celebration of a great year.
Mooloolah State School Chaplaincy Committee also expresses great appreciation to Ruth and the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy for their ongoing generous support of this event Emerald, Chappy Mark and the school’s and Mary chaplaincy program.

Students receive bursaries
Mooloolah Masonic Lodge, which has met at the Caloundra Freemasons Centre for over a decade now, still maintains close connections with its original location in Mooloolah Township. On December 8 the Lodge made its annual bursary presentation to final year students at the Awards Night in the assembly hall at Mooloolah State School. The Mooloolah Lodge secretary, Doug Wells said “seeing the grade 6 students were heading off to high school next year, we made the decision to include them in the bursaries because we did not want them missing out.” Kiara Chapman and Amelia Foster each received $250.00 as a reward for being the most promising and most improved Year 6 and 7 students, respectively. In his congratulatory speech to Kiara and Amelia, the immediate Past Master Andy Williams said the Lodge had been making bursary presentations for over 15 years, longer than he had been a member of Mooloolah Lodge.

What's new at Maleny Hotel Maleny Hotel regulars may have noticed some changes and new faces recently, including new head chef Sonia Allen. Sonia has been working tirelessly with the manager Tric, who is coordinating some major refurbishments to the pub including outside decks to provide open air dining, along with live music and all day dining on weekends. The dynamic duo hopes to make the Maleny Hotel a ‘destination dining experience’ and a second home for all the hungry and social fun loving locals. Sonia might be new to the hotel, but she definitely isn’t new to Maleny. She mastered the fine art of Thai cuisine under the famous Paul Blane at the Tamarind and has also worked at the UpFront Club. With 17 years working in the industry, Sonia plans to draw from her fast-paced club experience, and complement that with aspects of fine dining to create a modern eating experience. Sonia said that she likes to work closely with her
Business feature
team of chefs to produce a consistent quality product. “It’s important to me that we are proud of the food we are creating and what we are trying to accomplish here. “Keeping up-to-date with the freshest ingredients, in particular seafood, and having regular contacts with suppliers is critical to getting it right for the customer.” Sonia really enjoys the laid back vibe of Maleny and the passion which locals have for their local hang outs, while giving diners the experience of fresh, quality food at affordable prices. She also loves the interaction she has with the locals, enjoying the chance to see smiling happy faces. “I just love it when people pop their head in to the kitchen and say “hi Sonny, what’s good today?”, or better still “that meal was awesome.” And while the Hotel’s menu has seen some changes, you can be guaranteed that your favourites will always be there as well, such as dino nuggets for kids.
And don’t forget to check out the ‘chefs recommendations’ which change daily on a wonderful chalkboard art display by a talented local artist. So for a relaxing meal and a great night out, the Maleny Hotel has it all for locals and visitors alike.

Chamber encouraging shop local first
Business News Marking the Milestone
Name: Julie Fisher Name of Business: Collins Booksellers Milestone Achieved: Opening of new store Date of Opening: November 8, 2014 What took you on the path to open the business? Having seen an ad in the newspaper for a franchise business for sale in Caloundra, local Landsborough resident Julie felt it was a great opportunity that she would dearly love to take on. Having previously worked in the food service industry for many years, the business was totally off her previous career track, though Julie and her family had always passionately loved reading. Julie hadn’t necessarily been looking to change professions, however after 25 years in her previous industry; she was open to taking on new and interesting challenges in her life. With the encouragement of her husband ‘to go for it’, and realising that the business would provide a great shared interest for Julie and her family- the opportunity eventuated so Julie jumped in with both feet and embraced the exciting new challenge of owning and operating a Collins Bookseller. Why are you setting up this business? The Bookshop provided a great opportunity to work together as a family. Julie, her husband David, and their four children will all work at the shop along with Julie’s mum Del and locally based staff. Providing a great way to keep the family together and build on existing bonds, the business lets Julie spend time with her family on a daily basis, where previously work commitments would have meant missing out on that closeness. What process has been involved? To start any business from the ground up always takes a great deal of courage and effort. To take on a new career path is a big challenge but one that Julie has been more than willing to take on. The bookshop side of business is all new to Julie; however given her previous extensive experience in purchasing, merchandising, sales and customer services, the new business has been one that Julie has easily adapted to. Along with familiarising herself with a series of new systems, Julie has had to learn and adapt to a whole new set of business skills. Rising to the challenge, Julie welcomes the opportunity to learn new skills and she has always encouraged her own children to be fearless and self sufficient. Wanting to be a good role model as a parent, Julie is keen to show that with grit and determination people can do anything - and she is keen to be proof of that for both herself and her family.

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce held their Christmas drinks for the year at the Beerwah RSL. President Ken Bannister of Kwerky Café shared the exciting news with Beerwah business members that from Monday, Simpson Street would have Christmas Banners on the light poles. Councillor Rick Baberowski was thanked as council have provided the Chamber with $5,000.00 for this project, and Bruce and Kerry Allen from ATL Graphix were congratulated on the speed with which they have been able to produce the banners. “With the total transformation of Simpson Street finally being complete, it is great to be able to help create a festive feel in the business precinct,” Ken said. On the night the final winners were drawn for their ‘Shop Local First Campaign’ which has been underway for the past three months. These lucky winners had purchased items at Beerwah Hair and Beauty, Hinterland Body and Soul, Beerwah RSL and Total Microsystems. Congratulations to the winners. How stupid
I completely agree with Leonie Hall regarding Smiley's having to close for what I believe will be a Donut King. As far as I’m concerned another fast food place is not wanted as we have enough fast food outlets now. I also feel angry that the lovely ladies from Mrs Brown's cafe have to move. How stupid to make them move one door up from the new coffee shop up the other end now. We will all miss Smiley's jewellers, especially Tania and Julie, her wonderful co-worker. Both ladies have worked very hard over the years and it’s just so sad to see them both having to leave. I wish them well in life after the jewellery shop. Hopefully one day Smiley's will re-open close by. Thank you Tania and Julie for jobs well done. Carmel Beerwah
Holiday time
With the long summer holidays about to begin, I am writing in hope that parents and children all have a wonderful time with less stress than usual and lots of happy days. Those of us without young children should also be able to enjoy this time. One way for this to occur is for those of us using the roads, even quiet suburban ones, to be able to do so without the constant fear of having to avoid children playing there. Very little ones on bikes, even bigger ones with bikes and scooters have little or no sense of danger and may not always be highly visible to drivers. So please, parents, if the children want to ride bikes or scooters, set safe places for them to do so and monitor their behaviours. For all our sakes. Name supplied Beerwah
Supa thanks to IGA
The Glass House Mountains P&C would like to thank IGA Beerwah for their generous donation of a cheque for $1,000.00 presented to us on Wednesday, November 26. We have had some parents, caregivers and staff members who have been striving to improve the educational outcomes for our students by providing a cooler environment in which to learn. This wonderful donation will help us achieve this goal even quicker! Our tuckshop convenor loves to shop locally at all the IGA’s in the area and is always looking
to grab specials when suitable for the school tuckshop. We would also like to thank any Beerwah IGA customer’s who support our school through the IGA loyalty rewards program. Thank you once again. Judy Keays Outgoing Glass House Mountains P&C President
Re: IGA Community Chest
Beerwah IGA would like to remind locals that if members of the community would like to support the Community Chest recipients they can do so through the recently launched ‘MyIGA’ Card. Customers can earn loyalty points for shopping with them then choose to redeem points on future grocery shops or donate some or all of these points to one of the Beerwah IGA’s chosen Community Groups. Cards are available in store and are activated when you go through the register. So if you would like to support the good work of our local recipients call in a pick up a card and go online to register it.
Thanks
As the year comes to a close we would like to thank you and the GCNews staff for putting together a quality local paper. We all look forward to receiving it each week to help keep us up to speed with all the views and news that concerns the region. And there is heaps of it, NBN Co towers, Stocklands / Pumicestone Passage development, the new Beerwah shopping precinct...the place has woken up lately! So, seasons best wishes to you all and keep up the good work. Peter Gawith Peachester Editor’s note Thanks Peter the GCNews team appreciate your comments, while we are looking forward to our three week break, we will be back with plenty of enthusiasm for our first edition for 2015, on January 14.
Buy locally this Christmas
The Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains has organised a promotion to encourage locals to buy locally. Unfortunately we could not include every business in this promotion as we just don’t have the resources to do that, so we have included all the businesses that have supported our efforts to raise money for our Children's Fund over the last
few years. It is a large number of businesses, and we would like to thank them all very much for their support for our Community. All of the Retail businesses, have free tickets to give to their customers who buy locally through them, and over $1,000 worth of prizes will be won by locals who are supporting locals. We would like to thank our donors of prizes, great passes from Australia Zoo, and a beautiful painting by Brian Allison. We would also like to thank all of the people who do buy locally. If we do not do this, we will have no local shops and no employment for the people of Glasshouse Country. Trevor Taylor Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains
Just wanted to help
Community spirit is alive and well in Elimbah. A recent fire saw the Leighton family lose their family home and all their possessions. Local shoppers at Elimbah General Store donated in excess of $1,100.00 to assist in this difficult time. Many people who contributed did not actually know the popular family, they just wanted to help. Thanks to everyone involved. Your generosity was greatly appreciated by the Leighton family and it shows what a great and caring town we live in. Neil and Wendy Crane Elimbah General Store
Halls Creek meeting at Beerwah
I attended a public forum in Beerwah recently to discuss the inclusion of the Halls Creek area as a future IGA. At the meeting there were a number of people that felt the State Government’s insistence that the Sunshine Coast community be surveyed again about this issue, was an insult to democracy, as the community had consistently said ‘No’ over the past decade or more. Many felt that once again the community is not being listened to, and this is causing confusion and frustration amongst many in the community. Everyone agreed that it was time to again remind our State Government representatives, Ministers Andrew Powell and Mark McArdle that our answer to any question about Halls Creek being included as an IGA is still ‘NO! Take any reference to Halls Creek out of the SEQ Regional Plan.’ It only takes a couple of lines in a letter to one or both of the Ministers for you to let them know that you too say ‘NO’. Not smiling anymore
Ditto and thank you to all the letter writers who have shown their support re: Smileys Jewellers and Tania. Over the years Tania has looked after our community well, and has provided that extra level of service in particular to our elderly residents. We are losing a very loyal and valuable member of our community – shame on you who made the decision that means Tania cannot continue running her business in its current location. Tania is not just our Jeweler she is our friend. One sad local - Lorraine Beerwah Editor’s note Tania Smiley from Smileys Jewellers has asked us to include a message to everyone for the support and concern that the local community has shown her and Julie. It has been an emotional time for Tania and she has been genuinely overwhelmed by the response to the news that she would be closing her business. Tania and Julie would like to thank each and every one who has supported them over the years; they will miss everyone and are really grateful for the communities support. They have enjoyed the friendships, and have been pleased to share the milestones in many locals lives. And from GCNews we would like Tania to know how much we will miss her, not just as an advertiser, but as our go to store for items to fill our own jewellery boxes! Lea
Look after each other
I just want to encourage everyone to look out and look after each other. Twenty years ago in January, my sister was killed in a car accident, the day after her 18th birthday. And even though time has passed, it doesn't get any easier. I encourage everyone to slow down on the roads and don't drink and drive, it is just not worth it. Everyone has a family they want to get home too. Plan ahead, watch out for your mates and family. It can change your life forever, if you don't. Praying you all have a safe and Merry Christmas and New Year. Thanks. Donna Turner Glass House Mountains

Small school with a big heart
Last week student leaders of Glenview State School presented Adrienne Heppel from Need a Feed with over seven boxes of non perishable food collected by the students. It was a fantastic response from the school that may be small in number but big with heart. The Glenview school spirit was well represented in their generous support of the Hinterland charity which helps those less fortunate in the local community. Adrienne Heppel came along to the end of year school parade and presented a framed certificate of appreciation to the school. It was an awesome response. “It has been the biggest collection of food donated to date,” said Adrienne. A big thank you to everyone who donated. We wish you a merry Christmas
Landsborough State School students became 'roving carollers' last week as they walked local streets to spread some Christmas cheer. Accompanied by Creative Industries teacher, Mel Peters, classes positioned themselves outside local businesses and sang Christmas carols, serenading business workers and customers. Students canvassed the town, stopping out the front of retailers like Buck's Bakery, Landsborough IGA, Mellum Munchies, Landsborough Train Station and the Post Office. Principal Kristy Walton said the activity was a chance for the school to show their appreciation to the community. "We thought this would be a nice way to spread the Christmas spirit and make other people happy for the holidays," she said.

Students spread Christmas cheer
For the past three years Beerwah State School has held a school wide collection of donations for Christmas hampers for needy families. The school chaplain Linda Whysall and Tanya Searle (teacher) encouraged students to bring donations in to class to be passed on to the St Vinnies charity organisation. Mr Justin Neubecker (pictured) said he was very grateful for the generous donations. Linda Whysall said that giving to others in need is a valuable lesson to be learnt for young people today. Thanks for the amazing support Adrienne Heppel from Marae Gardens at Beerburrum really wants to thank the local community for their overwhelming support throughout the year. Adrienne co-ordinates The Need a Feed program and relies on the continued support of the many generous local businesses, community organisations and individuals. Knowing just how many locals there are who do what they can to share what they have and care about others enough to want to help those who find themselves needing a hand up, is really heart warming for Adrienne. "It has been great to see the number of people who regularly drop off furniture and household items for the 'Garage Sale' shed," Adrienne said. Every weekday there is also a coffee cart which operates outside the centre on Steve Irwin Way. Serving Segafredo Italian coffee and open from 6.00am until 12.30pm – the coffee cart offers a great drive through option for those in a hurry as well as an outdoor coffee break area for those

who want to stop and chill out. The ‘Need A Feed’ app allows users access to information about the program, drop-off points for donations, and a coffee cart pre-order section so that you can order your coffee for easy pick up on the go (so make sure you download the app). Earlier in the year as part of the Beerwah Celebrations in Simpson Street lots of the Beerwah businesses donated prizes for a mega raffle on the street party night. Thanks to their donations we were able to raise over $600.00. One of the more recent donations was from the Landsborough Masonic Lodge - a portable shower unit. The unit will provide practical assistance for those in our community who are homeless or less fortunate, and it will be available at all times for anyone in need who requires a shower. “We are just ecstatic, over the moon and so grateful – now anyone who needs help can come and have a shower if they need it,” enthused Adrienne about the new portable unit and the support from the Masons.
Jeff and Huhana at the 'Garage Sale' shed Then in early December both the Glenview State School and the Glasshouse Country Christian College presented Adrienne with boxes of non perishable food collected by the students. "It was awesome to see the kids getting involved and understanding the need to help out,” said Adrienne.

Monthly Finance Money Guide
Business Feature
How to protect your legal interests contibuted by Tracy King, Principal King Tobin Lawyers There are many areas and stages in your life where it is vital to review your affairs to protect your legal interests. Some examples of this are: the birth of your children, buying or selling your home, buying or selling investment properties, buying or selling businesses, the commencement of a de facto relationship or marriage, the end of a de facto relationship or marriage, and your care if you lose capacity and death. The most common misconception about lawyers is that ‘they cost a fortune’. Lawyers do charge for their time and expertise but they do so whilst often saving you a significant amount of stress and money. Quite often we only are consulted by clients once they are already in a crisis situation and the matter is urgent. It is very difficult and expensive to solve these legal problems at this stage. Situations we commonly are retained for which illustrate this are: •After the separation of a couple (married or de facto) who did not have a Binding Financial Agreement in place. We always recommend that a couple entering into a de facto relationship or marriage have in place a Binding Financial Agreement. This can effectively ‘quarantine’ any significant assets that the parties held separately coming into the relationship / marriage and provide a formula to deal with the division of assets acquired together in the sad event of a breakdown of the
relationship. It also provides the benefit of both parties discussing their assumptions going into the relationship, their plans for the financial partnership that they enter into and how they would treat each other in the event of the relationships demise. •After the death of you or a loved one who did not have a valid Will - many home-made Wills fall into this category. Additionally there may not be a Will at all or a Will may not be able to be located. The ability to collect in assets of the estate and pay for liabilities such as a funeral or mortgage is incredibly difficult, time consuming and costly. Having a valid Will in place can avoid these problems. •Estate planning - When you pass away, even with a valid Will, there may be assets that you own that, because of their nature or value, are refused to be released by the asset holder (usually a bank or share registry). We can provide you with information in relation to the current requirements of asset holders and then we can assist you to plan to avoid scenarios where there would be great expense and time involved in the administration of your estate if the planning had not been attended to. •Incapacity - It is not possible to make an Enduring Power of Attorney after you or your loved one has lost legal capacity. In this situation an application to a Queensland Government tribunal is required which can be lengthy and involves the input of other persons including health professionals and other family members. Feel free to make an appointment with us to discuss how we can protect your legal interests.

How to choose the right plot of land Building your own property has a host of advantages. Not only can you design a space that’s ideal for you to live in, but you have ultimate control over the quality of the finished product. However, before you can start moving in your belongings and reaping the rewards, it’s essential to make sure you find the right plot of land for your project. Securing a construction loan is just the start - get the location right and your real estate will continue to bring you pleasure year in, year out. See what’s available Although you might be able to envisage your perfect plot of land, it’s only likely to become a reality if you can actually find it! 30

DECEMBER 17 2014
As with any property purchase, it’s important to be open to the idea of compromise. For example, you might need to settle for a plot that’s a little smaller than you intended, or a few kilometres outside your ideal area. If you’re prepared to be patient then your ideal plot may eventually emerge it all depends on how quickly you want to get your project off the ground! Access to services Some people like the idea of living away from busy towns and cities, while for others it’s essential for certain facilities to be close by. No matter which category you fall into, factor this into your search for land. Write a wish list of all the facilities that
you need - schools, transport links and shops, for example - and also include some desirable features. This will help focus your search and narrow down any shortlist you might eventually compile. Environmental factors Having a survey carried out on any plot of land you’re considering is crucial to avoid any nasty surprises further down the line. Land can be at risk of many environmental factors, ranging from flooding to slippage. Don’t just settle for the first site you come across - it’s important to weigh up the positives and negatives of different areas before making a final decision. Local area

You might also want to take a closer look at the area that surrounds a plot. What are the neighbours like? Are there high levels of crime? A plot of land is no different from an established property in this respect. Having your facts to hand will ensure you make the right decision before getting to work on constructing your home.

Kids & Parenting Releasing the inner artist with the Superdads
Contributed by Brendan Edwards Christmas holidays! Six weeks of having all the kids at home, all day, everyday, is very different from the usual school routine. But it doesn’t have to be a daunting task to keep the kids entertained, if you are in the right mindset to enjoy the break. These holidays I’m planning to build a ginormous Lego table and use the internet to get the now lost instructions. I’ll try to help the kids sort all the bits and rebuild the huge collection of fire rescue boats, cars and helicopters, police stations, space shuttles and whatever else that has been smashed up and mixed together. Hopefully I don’t become ‘President Business’ and not let them touch it once it’s rebuilt! (See the Lego movie if you haven’t yet). If you’re a dad and are fortunate enough to have some time off, decide early on that you are going to make it a holiday time to remember. Sure you’ll need to take time to do the things that ‘fill your tank’ as a bloke, but too often it’s the dads that see the kids being around all day as an added hassle, that
is easily avoided once school resumes and you can smile and wave them off at the gate. As fathers we are not only to be the leader of the home but we naturally also set the tone or the mood of the home. I’ve often noticed that the kids are playing happily (and noisily) in the morning, then if I get up and enter the scene like a bear with a sore head, the mood of the whole family quickly follows suit. If the dad starts his day being thankful for his family, loving his wife and enjoying the playfulness of the youngsters, the peace of the home will be maintained or even restored if it wasn’t there to begin with. Many blokes would rather stay out of the way and let mum deal with the kids every morning. It’s easier to not be involved. But in years to come you will look back and wish you appreciated the moment and invested in the small things with them each day. Do this now and they will include you in their lives after they’ve moved out and have a family of their own. Have a blessed Christmas and enjoy being a dad.
The Superdads – we are a bunch of guys who love playing music and have formed a band. Their name came from something their guitarist Pete said once… “I don’t just want to be an average dad, I want to be an exceptional dad” – the idea resonated with them.

Aged care funding
On December 4 I announced a big win for the Sunshine Coast with 570 new federally funded aged care places to be delivered across the region worth just under $32 million annually. This is fantastic news for our region as it will help to meet demand for quality aged care services in our community and provide world class residential options for residents. The funding will also be beneficial for the construction industry and create hundreds of permanent jobs once completed. For more information on the aged care announcement visit www.malbrough.com. au/topic/seniors/
Operation Bounce Back
Last week I released information on the final employment initiative as part of my Operation Bounce Back campaign – the Green Army. The Green Army is a fantastic initiative that provides young people aged 17 – 24 with paid employment, skills, training and experience to improve their future career prospects while participating in projects that are making a real difference here on the Sunshine Coast. The Green Army is ideal for school leavers, gap year students, graduates or young job seekers. As my Operation Bounce Back campaign comes to an end I am pleased to say that we managed to reach over 36,500 people via social media and countless people through local publications. Thank you to all that have helped to spread the word. My goal was to show people the employment initiatives that are out there. If even one person has used the information to get them into the workforce the campaign has been a success. For more information on Operation Bounce Back and the Federal Government employment initiatives visit www.malbrough. com.au/operation-bounce-back
Merry Christmas!!
I would like to wish everyone across the Hinterland a very happy and safe Christmas and holiday season. Sue and I will be relaxing with family over the break and making the most of our great weather and fantastic region. Please note that my electorate office will be closed from 5.00pm on December 23 and will reopen at 9.00am, Monday, January 5. Don’t forget where possible to buy locally this Christmas and I look forward to working with you all in the New Year to continue to bring growth and prosperity to the Sunshine Coast.
State member for Glass House P: 5435 2013
Merry Christmas Most of you would have received my electorate Christmas card in your mail boxes recently but I would like to take this opportunity to personally wish members of the Glass House community a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy start to the New Year. I hope that you get to spend some quality time doing the things you like most with the people you love and that you get to enjoy a few festive goodies along the way. I’m looking forward to spending a few precious days at home with the family celebrating the true meaning of this special time of year. My office will be closed from 4.30pm on Tuesday, December 23 and will re-open at 9.00am on Monday, January 12. If you have any queries that pop up over that time, be sure to send the office an email and we will get back to you as soon as we can. I would also like to extend a huge thanks to those incredibly generous people in our community who donated gifts to this year’s Kids in Care appeal. We had a large amount of donated gifts under the tree in my office and all are now on their way to kids in need. Best wishes and thanks for your support in 2014.
Reed Street No politician can ever underestimate the power of a united community voice – the feedback that my office have been compiling on your views on the need for traffic signals at the Steve Irwin Way and Reed Street intersection at Glass House Mountains has been overwhelming. In my nearly six years as the MP for this region, I have been very clear that delivering this project was in my top five priorities for the electorate. I have not stopped lobbying the Minister for Transport and Main Roads on how much we need this project delivered, but now that I have feedback directly from the community, we will be able to present a very strong case to the Minister. Some of you would remember I brought the Minister to the electorate only a few months ago and after seeing for himself how desperately we need this intersection upgrade, he promised to do what he could to schedule this project in his future works program. Now with the many letters and emails we have received we can demonstrate how strongly our community will fight to get a positive outcome to ensure the long term safety of our community.
Mark McArdle
State member for Caloundra P: 5491 2780
The importance of volunteering Christmas is a time for giving – to your family, your friends, your next door neighbour and even to your local coffee shop owner who knows exactly what you’re going to order before you walk through the door. Give back to your community this Christmas and throughout the New Year by volunteering for a worthy cause. Many of our residents have been incredibly generous this year, donating all sorts of toys, clothing and food items to The Salvation Army. Why not volunteer for them this Christmas? Even helping your neighbour to mow the lawn, change a light bulb or something simple as delivering flowers to your neighbours will be the best gift they receive this Christmas. Local markets, clubs, art galleries or any other community events that take place throughout the year are all accepting of volunteers. Volunteers are vital to the continuity of our businesses, schools, community groups and charities and more importantly are vital to those who need our help every day. Without our volunteers where would we be? Take for example the Beerwah Hideaway Candles and Garden community event this Christmas. On December 12 Beerwah Hideaway were raising funds for the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church. Events such as these are happening all over the Coast, giving every one the opportunity to volunteer.

Recently we have heard so many people talk of seeing their Health Professionals only when there is a problem to be solved or an ailment to be seen to. We would like to communicate the benefits of prevention and regular treatments to enable well-being. It is much more cost effective and enjoyable to have treatments to maintain health and prevent illness. Merry Christmas to everyone and may the New Year bring an abundance of all good things to everyone. Stay safe – Bernette and Debbie

Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley After a year that has seen the Glasshouse Visitor Information Centre go from strength to strength, it was capped off with a silver award in the Information and Services category at the 2014 Queensland Tourism Awards on Friday, November 28. This recognition reflects the great team that works together and the vital role they play in promoting Glass House and the surrounding region. A big shout out to the entire team for all their efforts. We have also been out and about over the last month visiting The Lookout Cafe for a wonderful morning tea. It is always a pleasure to visit and enjoy the view and service, not to mention the marvellous scones and jam. With Christmas fast approaching, I want to take the opportunity to thank each Volunteer Ambassador for giving their time in the information centre. Without their dedication, we could not function to the high level we do on a daily basis. It is often said that volunteers do not get paid because they are priceless, indeed ours are priceless. So to you and yours, on behalf of SCDL, we wish you a safe and happy Christmas and look forward to seeing you in the centre in 2015. Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd Ambassador Coordinator Bev Dooley with Ambassador Leo O’Mara proudly showing off the centre’s recent award
The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information centre is located at Settler's Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains and is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 4.00pm
What an awesome day we had! Thank you so much to the following people and businesses for their donations to our fundraising horse ride. Also to all the wonderful people who helped on the day and to everyone who purchased raffle tickets … and to the businesses that sold tickets for us and also had our Pink donation tins. What a wonderful community we live in, when so many people can come together to raise money for such a lovely lady. Without all of you we could not have done it. Thank you. Ask your mother for sixpence to see the big giraffe … Dimples on his whiskers and pimples on his … ask, your mother again. But we will not be asking again. If you would like to take advantage of the Energex offer to beat the rule change, then talk to us before Christmas, preferably. After December 31, you lose the opportunity to ‘automatically’ be permitted to apply for a 5kW solar system without having to fit an export limiter (probably). Will houses for sale with larger solar systems on their roof attract higher prices or be in more demand by prospective buyers in the future? Will this be seen as a bonus to them as their future electricity bills will be less? These happy people didn’t miss the boat by waiting too long and guess what, they also saw the big giraffe. You too, could enjoy plenty of free electricity to run your house or business if you ACT NOW. Businesses can lease / rent the system even if the business premises are not owned.
Lance and Jennifer Smith
Mr Pryce Rees
Jasmine Williams and Ian Venables
David Good and Emma Creed
REMEMBER – IMPORTANT – The application needs to be made to Energex (we will do it for you) BUT the system, and therefore your expenditure, doesn’t need to take place until 2015. Last chance to act. May the Lord grant you all a safe and happy Christmas. *to approved applicants, conditions, fees and charges apply. See website for terms & conditions.

Dine In
with Lea Parkes
Sacred Tree Café
Over the past few years Brownie and I have quite often enjoyed sitting out the back of LattE Da Cafe under the big tree and enjoying breakfast or lunch on the weekend, so when I heard that there were new owners and a new name, I was keen to see what the Sacred Tree Café would be like. I have to say that now I have met the mother and daughter team – Julie and Sarah Jackson – and have tried their food, I feel relieved that my world hasn’t been too rocked by the changes they have introduced. They both clearly share a strong passion for food, and believe in the importance of using raw ingredients, preferably local produce, making things from scratch and most importantly cooking with love and passion.
Sarah has been a chef for eight years and has experience in a range of different food styles including producing vegetarian and vegan choices, as well as gluten free items, which she has incorporated into their menu. Mum Julie says Sarah is a bit of a perfectionist, with a strong attention to detail (as a customer that makes me happy) and I have to say the glittery texture on the white chocolate strip on Brownie’s pancakes was definitely evidence of this! Mum Julie has an extensive background in managing businesses, so Sarah says her mum is ‘the boss’; however Julie is very happy to defer to Sarah as the boss of the kitchen, so together they look like making a great team. Originally from Mount Glorious, they have spent the last couple of years working in Rockhampton,
however they were keen to return south. While looking for a café, they had already decided on a name, so when they spotted the amazing tree in the garden they knew that this was the place for them. Having now been open for the past three weeks they have really been enjoying meeting the regular customers and making connections with new customers, and getting an understanding of what people are looking for. They serve a full menu for breakfast from 7.00am – 11.30am, then lunch from 11.30am – 3.00pm when the kitchen closes. Throughout the day they have a great range of both savory and sweet items in the cabinet, and have a very ‘cute kids menu’ for the littlies which is sure to impress.

NBN, Ericsson, Auricon and Malcolm Turnbull MP Want Microwave Towers for Our District Question Everything They Promise! NBN Co has now gone into stealth mode as they attempt to sign up landholders. They have widened their range and are visiting properties around Mt. Mellum and Peachester. Maleny, Beerwah and Glasshouse Hinterland residents want NBN! However, they want: * an NBN of the same standard that will be offered to Maleny and Beerwah township residents * an NBN by the use of copper cable and fibre optic cables * an NBN service that is 'safe'. NBN Co proposes to provide the service using about 8 Microwave Towers, of at least 30 metres in height, around our area * This microwave service has not been proven safe for humans and wildlife * Microwaves are a class 2B Carcinogen. Electrohypersensitivity (EHS) is already present within our community. Local residents and wildlife do not need additional microwaves in our environment. Please contact your local politicians and NBN Co to make them aware of YOUR expectations for OUR areas: * Mal Brough MP (Member for Fisher), PO Box 1224, Buddina Qld 4575. * NBN Co, Level 11 / 100 Arthur Street, Nth Sydney, NSW 2060. Start preparing your local area residents to address any Development Applications that may be lodged in 2015 to the Sunshine Coast Council for NBN towers.
A TOWERLESS NBN FOR MALENY, LANDSBOROUGH, BEERWAH & GLASSHOUSE HINTERLANDS These microwave towers will impact on our way of life These microwave towers do: * reduce property prices around the area * impact on the pristine tourism views of the escarpment * impact on residents and wildlife * add to the 'electrosmog' (electronic pollution) already present NBN is not being 'honest and transparent with the community * little information was provided at the forums about where these services may be located or the safety of the service * NBN will not use the words 'microwave' or 'tower' Thank you for your support at the recent Maleny open forums and the Free Concert and Information in the Park.
More local information and a petition will be available at The Kiosk beside Maleny Community Centre, on Saturday 20 December, 10.00 AM ~ 3.00 PM PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION – A TOWERLESS NBN FOR MALENY, BEERWAH & GLASSHOUSE HINTERLANDS Sponsored by the Maleny/Witta/Reesville/Mountain View/Conondale Tower Action Groups. An African woman asked a travelling evangelist, what made Jesus so special that He could cover the sins of the entire world? “I understand that a good person might be able to pay for the wrong of one or two people, but I can’t believe one man could cover the wrong of every person who ever lived,” she said. “How do you know He was qualified for such an offering?” The man replied, “the secret is in the blood.” When people talk about the blood of Jesus it can be the start of many interesting and seemingly weird conversations. Jesus himself made some strange comments about the blood He was about to shed before He was crucified. I know a guy that was in a relationship with a woman who became pregnant, but when a DNA test was done on the child’s blood, the match was made to a different man! (Needless to day that relationship didn’t go much further!) In the blood, science can prove who fathered the child. If a DNA test was done on the child named Jesus of Nazareth, what would they have found? Joseph was not the father - God was! Wow! The Bible clearly explains Mary’s unique conception by the Holy Spirit. This amazing truth is what sets Him apart from all who came before and will come after. This is the reason behind Christmas. This is also the unique invitation God gives us. If you choose to come under the offering of Christ, the perfect one, born of a virgin, the one and only Son of God, you too can receive the gift of everlasting life. His fulfilled life. The life He freely laid down and on the third day took up again, celebrated at the other great time of year - Easter. Bless you and have an awesome Christmas season. See you in church soon. Pastor Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church On behalf of everyone from Glasshouse Country Baptist Church we want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. Enjoy the family, the presents, the food and the holidays, they are all God’s kind gift to you. But above all, use this season to remember God’s greatest kind gift to us all - Jesus. PS: Why don’t you try going to church this Christmas? You might be pleasantly surprised.

Dr Percy Harrold Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Community Church Children look forward to the Christmas season and visits to Santa. Their excitement about potential and real presents in this time of giving and receiving can last for weeks or just days. But there are in our region real people who may not have enough to even have a special family meal on Christmas Day. The Landsborough Adventist Community Church has been collecting food items for some time and have prepared them as food parcels for a few families who receive these practical gifts. I guess the thing to consider in all the last minute shopping, the sharing of gifts with family and friends, and the excitement of the season, is that the One whose birth is being celebrated was all for giving and receiving. He gave his life so we could receive life. The least we can give is our friendship.

Country Ministers Fellowship members Pastor Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Country Community Church Here’s a little something to help us remember the truth behind Christmas. C is for Christ, born of a virgin, conceived by the Holy Spirit!! H is for Holy angels that blew the minds of the shepherds nearby. R is for Righteous, meaning ‘right with God.’ We can be through Him. I is for the Invitation to join God’s family. Everyone is welcome. S is Salvation. It’s a gift so you can’t earn it yourself. Just receive it. T is for time. This is very short so decide now who you will follow. M is for Magnificent, the plans God has for you if you’ll trust Him. A is Ambiguous, (just a cool word whose meaning remains unclear). S is for Santa who needs to believe in Jesus too!

Mike Turner Beerwah State High School Chaplain A big Happy Christmas to all the families of Glasshouse Country! Sometimes families are very close to each other in location but emotionally very distant, sometimes family members can be all over the world but still be emotionally close and wellconnected. No family is perfect, we all make mistakes and hurt each other, but my prayer is that this Christmas we can show each other a little more love and patience and find some healing from the hurts that crop up each year. If we need a good example of someone who loves and forgives, we just need to look at Jesus – and Christmas is all about Jesus. Craig Moody Glasshouse Country Anglican Church I have a personal foible about the spelling of Christmass. By using a second ‘s’ at the end of the word, I seek to remind people of the origins and meaning of the season. There are several interesting explanations of the origins of Christmass spelt this way, however I disregard them, because I am not attempting to claim some traditional authority for my spelling. I simply wish to make people think. It is so easy to leave Christ out of Christmas and to have a secular holiday. However the double ‘s’ emphasises the origins of the festival as having two words – Christ’s Mass, thereby reminding us of the central place of Christ. May your Christmass season be blessed, safe and happy. Thelie Hobbs Suncoast Church Hinterland Sometimes labels become meaningless. In marketing anything can be labelled as 'fantastic’ or 'wonderful'...so when we read in Isaiah that Jesus is ‘Wonderful’...well, it might not impress us. When was the last time we were filled with child-like wonder? Throughout the Christmas story, all the characters are filled with wonder: Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the Wise Men, and others. Jesus truly is wonderful...eternal God come into the world, fully God and fully human. He is wonderful in His actions—and if we choose to let Him, He will bring wonder to our lives this Christmas. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given: and the government shall be on his shoulder: and His name shall be called: ‘Wonderful’, ‘Counselor’, ‘The Mighty God’, ‘The Everlasting Father’, ‘The Prince of Peace.’ (Isaiah 9:6) Merry Christmas!
Pastor Margaret Niethe Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Christmas is a time of celebration of the birth of our Lord, the Messiah, Jesus Christ. It is a time for fellowship, warmth, gifts, and song, good food, parties and memories. But when I lift my eyes to take in the wonder of each new day, I pray that my family, friends and people I know and share with, find the hope to make Christ the centre of the Christmas season. We invite you to read the inspirational Christmas Story, the birth of Jesus, to understand the reason why we celebrate this season and why we give our hearts to him. Jesus is much more than the infant in the cradle, watched over by his mother Mary and Joseph, and the shepherds, and announced in praise and worship by the angels. That baby in the manger was only the beginning of mankind's redemption. I hope in the season of giving as you dash around town, trying to find that perfect gift for that someone that has everything, that you will bring Christ’s light to those who have nothing and those that are forgotten or overlooked. Spread the spirit of giving beyond your children, family and friends. May the spirit of Christmas bring you peace, The gladness of Christmas give you hope, The warmth of Christmas grant you love. Pastor Rod Jobe Church on the Rise At first glance, Jesus’ résumé is rather simple. He never travelled more than a few hundred kilometres from his home, he never held a political office, never wrote a book, never married, never attended college, never visited a large city. He died both homeless and poor. Nonetheless, more songs have been sung to him, artwork created of him, and books written about him than anyone who has ever lived. In fact, Jesus looms so large over human history that we actually measure time by him; our calendar is divided into B.C. (before Christ) and A.D. (anno Domini) meaning ‘in the year of the Lord’ respectively. He is the first six letters of Christmas and his birthday again calls us to consider him as the Saviour of the world. He is the Reason for the Season! From everyone at Church on the Rise we wish you a Merry Christmas.

Gardening jokes
Here’s a selection of my ‘favourite’ gardening jokes and sayings for you to amuse your friends and rellies over Christmas. If they don’t laugh, it must be the way you’ve told them. Why are bananas never lonely? Because they always hang around in bunches. What did the first caterpillar say to the second caterpillar when they saw a butterfly? "You'll never get me up in one of those things!" Why do potatoes make good detectives? Because they keep their eyes peeled. God made rainy days, so gardeners could get the housework done. What does the letter ‘A’ have in common with a flower? They both have bees coming after them. I once read about the dangers of gardening, so I quit reading. A woman should never plant a garden larger than her husband can take care of. It has been so dry this week, the trees are whistling for the dogs. Merry Christmas to all the GCNews readers. Stay healthy and spend some time in the garden these holidays – but not too much. Until next year.
Peachester District Horticulture Society
Contributed by Patricia Bradford Thanks to members who attended the final meeting of the year at our place. It was a great day to finish the year. Jeff Bodley and Rob Morris toured parts of South America recently and Jeff spoke about many interesting places he visited. Contrasts between different areas and people were commented on, and found some cities depressing. There was also lots of spectacular scenery. Coral Beutel spoke about her trip, flying to Darwin, travelling on the Ghan to Adelaide, then on the Indian Pacific to Perth, meeting up with family members, then flying home from Perth. Saw interesting plants in Darwin and wild flowers out in Alice Springs. Results of the competition bench for October, tie 1st Pam Innes and Coral Beutel 16 points, 2nd Margaret Ferris 15 points. Then members enjoyed a barbecue lunch with most salad ingredients supplied from Gary’s veggie garden. The past year has been a difficult year gardening wise with persistently dry conditions throughout most of the year. On behalf of the members, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a good year for gardening in 2015. We will meet again at the Peachester Hall on Thursday, January 15, at 9.30am. Visitors and new members welcome. Go Green Rainforest Nursery Plant of the Week Grevillea ‘Elegance’
Here at Go Green one of our favourite bird attracting Grevilleas is ‘Elegance’. As its name suggests it has a beautiful form with ornamental fine foliage and exquisite pinkish red flowers. The flowers are dripping with nectar and provide a valuable food source for many native birds throughout the year. This stunning Grevillea is best grown in full sun and a free draining position. It will grow to around 3m but can be kept smaller with an annual prune. There is a stunning example in full flower that is four years old, it’s planted on the road reserve outside the nursery. Check it out while driving by or drop in for a closer look. If you would like to find out more about some of Australia’s most amazing flora and the fauna they attract then drop in and see the team at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Hanson donates loads to school environmental project Queensland’s Hanson Glasshouse Mountains Quarry is working closely with a small primary school in Mapleton to help students re-establish a section of local creek as part of an environmental education project. The quarry donated two truck-loads of gravel and rocks to help restore a section of Baxter Creek that lies within the Mapleton State School grounds, which had become overgrown with camphor laurel, chinese elm, lantana and other declared weeds. The Baxter Creek development is a two-step project that aims to clean up and care for the environmental surrounds of the school, finish a bridge for the creek bed and create a safe, rewarding environment for students to actively learn about nature as a part of their school studies. Principal of Mapleton State School Dr Jennifer Clarke said that students and teachers are enthusiastic about the project on the school property and had dedicated a lot of time and effort to their hands-on studies of the flora, fauna and waterway ecosystem. Quarry Manager Craig Stevens said it was a pleasure working with the school and bringing their vision for a green, outdoor virtual classroom to life. “Our team was very keen to be involved and provide rock, materials and some labour to ensure the project got the boost it needed,” Craig said. “Hanson has helped enormously and it is wonderful for all of the school and the local community to see the creek area revived,” Dr Clarke said. “Thank you to all at Hanson for this generous Dean Robson delivers rock for school creek project donation.”

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Introducing our newest champions Contributed by Norm Taylor The team from San Taekwondo at Beerwah and Maleny have just returned from Adelaide where they competed in the National Championships. Leo Michael, Siena Cameron, Aaron Lerch and Cameron Taylor competed in a tough competition with more than 1,000 fighters from all over Australia. The team finished with two gold, a silver and a bronze. Leo Michael won bronze in the Open Featherweight red belt division losing in a close fight to a New South Wales fighter in the semifinals. Leo has only been competing for a year and this was his first Nationals. Siena was the 2013 defending National Champion and finished this year with another great result wining a silver medal in the Under 11 blue belt division, losing in a close fight in the final to a player from Western Australia. Aaron Lerch has only been competing for a year but showed great skill and tactics to win a gold medal in the Cadet blue belt division. Aaron had two tough opponents beating a South Australian player in the first round then a tough fighter from Western Australia in the final. After narrowly missing out last year, Cameron won the gold this year in the Lightweight Open Black Belt division. Cameron made it through 58 |
| DECEMBER 17 2014
by beating Western Australia by knockout in the first round, South Australia by a point’s gap in the second round, and winning a nail-biting final. Scores were tied after the three rounds of regular time and there was no score during the suddendeath overtime round. Cameron was awarded the fight by superiority as he had been more dominant through the fight. The San team was joined by Kasia from a Brisbane club and after fighting courageously she lost her first fight to the eventual gold medallist. Fighters are now looking forward to a short break over Christmas before starting preparation for the 2015 season which will include several international tournaments. Coach Norm Taylor said he couldn’t be happier with the performance and sportsmanship of our team. “They all showed great courage and skill and demonstrated the respect towards the officials, volunteers and other players that we all expect. Well done and congratulations to the national champions and runners-up from the hinterland,” he said. San Taekwondo would like to thank club sponsors Hinterland Sports Store at Beerwah and Karoom Himalayan Salt Products at Maleny for their support.

Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club
Contributed by Trevor Bertram The monthly Jackpot Triples last Wednesday was won by Di Garland, Jim Tatum and Rob Scullion with the Highest Score of 25. In second place with a score of 22 were Jack Timm and Di Hunt and the ‘Lucky Draw of the Card’ prize went to Viv James, Vic Muscat and Joy Reason. Graham Anstis won the ‘Most Touchers’ prize having 7. The Jackpot was not won. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Rae Farrell and Kerry Capern with two wins and the Highest Margin of +15 and the Runners-up, on a countback, with the Highest Margin in either game of +9 were Jenny Hobson and Di Garland. The green is to be taken out for its annual refurbishment on December 22 and is expected to be back into play for the first Jackpot Triples on Wednesday, January 14. The Club Quarterly Meeting which was scheduled for Saturday, December 20, has been postponed until Saturday, January 17. A trial match for Super Challenge will be played at and against Caloundra on Saturday, December 20. Roll-ups may start from 12.00 noon with the game to commence at 1.00pm. Those players who have nominated for Super Challenge should check the Notice Board to see if they have been selected to play in the trial match.
Contributed by Jenny Morris What a way to finish the year with our Div 2 team, The Mad Dogs winning the Monday night competition Grand Final. It was a nail biting finish as the result of the match went to the last set. After eight sets the match was even and Katie and Todd eventually won six games to three. All of the supporters from both teams were watching very closely from the sideline. A great game of tennis and a worthy win as our team had only beaten the Kawana Piranas twice in the season being in the finals. A great effort for the season from all of our players. Unfortunately our Div 4 team, the Vipers went down by seven games in the Preliminary final. Hope to see you all return in the New Year for another year of great tennis and companionship.
Glasshouse Cricket
Contributed by Frank Doonan Division 1: Game washed out. Division 2: Played at home against Burpengary in a one day match. Glasshouse won the toss and fielded first. The match was shortened from 40 to 35 before the start of play and then reduced to 33 overs due to a couple of minor rain delays. Burpengary scored 7 for 185 off their 33 overs with Jack Hextall the best of the bowlers 3 for 22. Glasshouse scored 8/185 off their 33 overs so it was a tied match. Lachlan Pill 77 and Harry Elks 55 were the top run scorers. Division 4: Glasshouse 86 lost to Maroochdore 5 for 87, Best batting J Kilah 29, T Matthews 13 Best bowling, J Owen 3 for 5, Adam Joyce 2 for 14, Mitch Fleiter 1 for 24 Under 12: Glasshouse 7 for 66 Lost to Nambour 3 for 81. Juniors have finished until the New Year. Hope you all have a good Christmas and see you back in the New Year. Seniors have one more game till they have a break.

Landsborough Tennis Update
Contributed by Kerry Roach The courts are ready - it’s very exciting but yes the time has come and we now have two brand new courts to play on. Final work to the fence and some line marking should see the project complete. Come on down and be one of the first to have a game on the new courts. The two front courts have also had a makeover and are looking just as good. Our project is set to be completed on time within the next week. Absolutely Awesome! Thankyou all for being so patient while work has progressed, I’m sure you will all agree it will be worth it. We are officially opening our new courts and would like to invite all our members and the community to come along and join in on the day. The Minister for National Parks Recreation Sport and Racing, Mr Steve Dickson will officially open the courts at 10.00am on January 17. There will be lots of games on the courts, free sausage sizzle, raffle prizes, face painting for the kids and our new speed serve machine to make it a great morning. New memberships on the day will receive a 10% discount. Come along and support the Landsborough Tennis Club. Our club has been very fortunate to have Greg Daniel as our president for the past 10 years. His role as president has ensured the club has always been well managed and that the sport of tennis has been available for all of our community members to participate in and enjoy. We are sad to see Greg leave, however we are excited for him to be finally embarking on his travels, which he has talked about for some time. We wish Greg all the best and hope he has a safe and happy time travelling around Australia. The club would like to thank Adam Behrend for taking on the role of acting president until our AGM in February. If anyone would like to meet Adam he is usually swinging a racquet around on Wednesday night at the courts.

In Memoriam In memory of Bruce White The team at ‘All Energy HQ’ regrets deeply the sudden passing of our great friend and colleague, Bruce White.
Our customers who had the pleasure of talking with Bruce will sadly no longer hear the cheerful resonant velvet voice, which Bruce possessed. Bruce, although limited in mobility, possessed a remarkably positive spirit, seemingly to never see the negative in anything, an inspiration to all.
To Annette and children we understand and share your grief. Karen, Judy, Lynda, Leanne, Kirk, Ian and Ty 60 |

A little old lady answered a knock on the door one day, to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner. “Good morning,” said the young man. “If I could take a couple minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in highpowered vacuum cleaners. ''Go away!'' said the old lady. ''I'm broke and haven't got any money!'' and she proceeded to close the door. Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed it wide open.
''Don't be too hasty!'' he said. ''Not until you have at least seen my demonstration.'' And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure onto her hallway carpet. Now if this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder." The old lady stepped back and said, "well let me get you a fork, 'cause they cut off my electricity this morning." Hugh Jones Beerwah

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 There is an amazing time coming up for you over Christmas since the planet’s cast your mind back to the past as a source of answers to the present. Reconnecting with old traditions creates warm secure feelings. It’s a good week to send out Christmas cards. The planet Venus gives you romance. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Whilst you are in a private place a decision you make could affect the future or holiday plans. The planet Jupiter, moving retrograde, slows down your financial affairs. This may see some rough feelings about holiday spending and so you should be frugal. Venus in Capricorn gives practical presents. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 All the aspects this week favour making repairs and taking corrective measures. A common sense, patient approach, is best for accomplishing tasks. The Moon moves through the sign of Leo and highlights dealing with marital and/or partnership affairs. Handle the crazies sensitively now. PISCES February 20 – March 20 With the planet Venus entering Capricorn, this week opens the way for holiday friendships. Follow your psychic instincts this week and you can’t go wrong, be it either a work or health matter. A little indulgence at a fun party is just the joyful medicine you need. Happiness and celebrations!
ARIES March 21 – April 20 Travel or expressing yourself creatively can be a source of pleasure. See if you can explore more of the world, if not physically, at least by studying the travel pages. This week have a positive outlook as a Venus aspect is encouraging you to get all your tasks done. Be tactful and no one will refuse you. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Be on the lookout for pleasures with a loved one this week or perhaps enjoying a surprising holiday fun time at home with a family member. On Thursday and Friday there is a Leo Moon which brings you pleasures galore, including family love. You have the skills to repair some items around your home. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 The Leo Moon this week should see that optimism will open doors for you. This is a good week to be with other people as you can benefit from those you meet now, and those you already know. Do as much as you can on your own so that for one reason or another, your life can seem pretty idyllic now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This is a week that a pet is a lively companion, probably even better than the human variety. With Jupiter now retrograde, this may halt extravagant spending. A co-worker could help you retain balance if needed, but just watch out for any possible agitated companions or some luncheon road rage.

LEO July 23 – August 22 You should note that the planet Venus will be in Capricorn for the next three weeks, so that could provide introductions through work to people you really like. Your optimistic approach is infectious and makes you a competent speaker in travel talks and creative ideas. News of someone’s pregnancy! VIRGO August 23 – September 22 You should find this a happy home week and contact with positive family members. There is a possible evening outing to enjoy a social event. The weekend sees the Moon in your sign and offers love and hugs. The spirit of the holiday season brings out the best in everything and in large measures. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Mid week a window of opportunity opens for getting things done. There is encouraging, upbeat exchange of views, as the planet Venus enters your home sector, where it puts you in the mood to beautify your home making it a welcome place for guests. A trip of some kind is probable and favourable. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The planet Saturn is in its last degree in your sign before it moves into Sagittarius at Christmas time. This means there is a golden opportunity to shine professionally. It will make you look good to those with influence. If you need to send out resumes or promote your skills expect good results.
