A

s a ‘yarn bomber’, someone who likes to cover trees in knitting – (most of you will remember the front cover from last year just before Christmas), I have to say I was very impressed to see the handiwork of the ‘yowie lover’ at Landsborough. I couldn’t believe when we drove into Landsborough on Saturday that someone had gone to so much trouble to do something that would bring lots of smiles to the faces of both the young and young at heart visiting Pioneer Park at Landsborough. I am assuming that the creative genius behind Pioneer Park’s Yowie Mob wasn’t council staff – and I would love to know who was responsible and more importantly, did they do it under the cover of darkness? The first time I saw the Casuarina glauca common name ‘Cousin It’ being planted as part of the entry statement to the town, I thought they were a very quirky choice – and clearly I wasn’t alone. If anyone has any additional knowledge about the ‘yowie lover’ and would like to share the story please contact me on lea@ gcnews.com.au

Former Beerburrum resident Joanna Wharton has written a book about her son Ethan (12) who was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at age four. In the book, Joanna explores Ethan’s life.

Joanna, who sees herself as an ordinary mum with an extraordinary challenge, said her son’s life takes form like a kaleidoscope of constantly changing patterns. “Approaching his unique life with an intimate view of beautiful chaos, I documented quirky stories and inspiring insights hoping that one day, people could discover new understanding and vitality for themselves,” she said. Because of this syndrome, Ethan perceives the world differently. He understands the world through touch; he senses his surroundings with the pads of his fingers or the tips of his toes. The book provided the framework for the performance piece 'Kaleidoscope'. This unique story explores beauty found in the smallest things, exploring Asperger Syndrome through the physical theatre of Circus Arts. Ethan will be starring in the show, which will premiere at the prestigious Judith Wright Centre in Brisbane, under the direction of world class seasoned directors and performers.

This hopefully will include coming back to inspire various groups in this region. To turn their plans into reality, they had to raise $10,000.00, which they have been doing through a Pozible Fundraising campaign. The campaign closes on February 28 and Joanna is looking for others who understand the importance of what she is doing. To find out more go to the web page and learn more about this incredible project http://www.pozible.com/ project/203360 All funds raised go directly towards the development of this performance, including artist fees, costume design and making, set design, music composition, lighting design and production.

Care for a cute Seeing Eye puppy

Hinterland Property

If you are looking for a unique and rewarding way to give back to the community, why not consider volunteering your home to a seeing eye puppy?

THINKING OF

SELLING? Contact mike@scremail.com

These intelligent pups are currently experiencing a housing shortage and are in urgent need of loving homes. One Glass House Mountains resident Sharon Chapman is currently caring for Paige, a gorgeous yellow Labrador. She loves working with Seeing Eye Dogs Australia (SEDA) dogs as they have such great personalities and learn to do amazing things. She said the experience is enjoyable and rewarding at the same time. Paige is a lovely puppy with a sweet nature, who, with the right training and care, will grow up to make a great Seeing Eye Dog. As part of Paige’s socialisation she accompanies Sharon to a variety of places including the shops, restaurants and movies. Sharon cannot speak highly enough of Paige and SEDA’s puppy caring program. Sharon has previously looked after a guide dog and took interest in SEDA when she saw a puppy wearing the blue SEDA coat. Sharon has always been supportive of guide dogs, knowing the end result will be worth it, for the person in need. Sharon loves that she has been able to experience the joys of helping a puppy grow up and see them go on to provide companionship, mobility and confidence to those who are blind. Sharon is passionate about the work of SEDA,

and keen to draw attention to their urgent need for puppy carers in Queensland. Sharon and Paige are a great example of the benefits of volunteering as a puppy carer, and the positive influences that the program has on puppy carers and also the wider community. Each Seeing Eye Dog costs around $50,000 to train and currently there is a yearlong wait list for people that require a Seeing Eye Dog. Puppy Carers are essential to SEDA and their breeding program. With all costs covered by SEDA, the puppy caring program only requires volunteers to care for a puppy in their home from the age of eight weeks, until they are approximately 12 months of age. In a time where people’s financial budgets are stretched, this is a wonderful opportunity for people to get involved with the organisation without having to contribute financially. If you are interested in becoming a puppy carer or would like to find out more about Seeing Eye Dogs Australia visit www.seda.org.au or call 1800 037 773.

Barry Hall to be calendar cover star By Sonia Clark

Following the success of her 2016 ‘Vintage Calendar Girls’ project to raise awareness for Rare Cancers Australia, Mt Mellum’s Misty Bland is excited to be producing a 2017 calendar with confirmation of a celebrity cover star. AFL Legend Barry Hall, who was also last year’s runner up winner on ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here’ has agreed to be on the cover of the 2017 calendar. The Calendar will have a Gatsby

inspired roaring 1920’s theme and will be sold locally. Shooting will commence on March 12 at Old Petrie Town in North Brisbane. The old world charm of the location will provide the perfect themed backdrop for the cover shoot which will also feature two ladies who both bring their own stories of living with challenging health issues. Misty has recently had a story in Take 5 Magazine and their New Zealand magazine Lucky Break. Following the publication of the story, she has been contacted by many others who also suffer from the same rare illness as her husband Rob, who was the initial inspiration for the project. “It is great that people have been able to connect and share their experience,” said Misty. Misty is passionate about raising exposure and funds for Rare Cancers of Australia. With 50% of diagnosed cancers coming under the ‘rare’ category, the Rare Cancer organisation provides vital support for people and their families with identification of 208 types of rare cancers. Shooting for the new calendar will take place from March through to June, with plans for a gala launch later this year on September 17. If you would like to support this project and the Rare Cancers Organisation, head to https://www. rarecancers.org.au to donate and put a foot note for sponsorship for Vintage Calendar Girls. As a registered charity, all donations are totally tax deductible. facebook.com/vintagecalendargirls.com

Receive children, receive me

This year’s World Day of Prayer will be held on Friday, March 4, and the service has been compiled by the World Day of Prayer Committee in Cuba. The theme is Jesus said ‘Receive Children, Receive Me.’ The World Day of Prayer is an international ecumenical Christian laywomen’s initiative, celebrated annually in over 170 countries. The movement aims to bring together women of various races, cultures and traditions in a yearly common Day of Prayer, as well as in closer fellowship, understanding and action throughout the year. This year there will be combined services in both Glasshouse Country and on the Range. Glasshouse Co-ordinator Eunice Prickett of Peachester said this year’s service will be hosted by the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church at Beerwah and will be held at 9.30am with a morning tea to follow. “An open invitation is extended to all to attend the service and then join in fellowship,” Eunice said. In Maleny the Catholic Church will be hosting the service and it will also begin at 9.30am with refreshments to follow. Maleny co-ordinator Catherine McGrath is encouraging members of other churches and services groups to attend on the day. Dreamfox Studios is a small local independent app game company that have recently debuted their game ‘Pennychute’ to the Apple App store. Located at Mooloolah, the company is the brainchild of a young 23-year-old game designer, Jonathon Fox and his team. GC&M News caught up with Jonathon to find out more about his background and his company’s adventures into the digital world. How long have you been designing apps for? For a few years now, and have many concepts that are ready to go. When I decided to take the plunge into the world of apps I quit my job to work from home in Mooloolah. Since then I have been trying to find an app that was small, fun and possibly addictive. This was to give us the best chance at producing a ROI (return on investment) while getting a feel for the process and the market. Did you study here on the Sunshine Coast? No, I did not go to university. I have not learnt how to write code – however I have taught myself about the industry. I created the concept of the game along with the help of my team and we designed the UI (User Interface – how the game looks) of the game. The UX (the code that makes our 2D pictures move and makes the app function) was outsourced. What led you to become an app designer? I was always interested in inventing and creating new things ever since I can remember. I was sent an article by my brother about apps and how they could be a business. I thought this industry seemed like a good fit and this is where it all began. I was hooked on the idea. The idea of creating and developing something new, that people all around the world could enjoy. The lifestyle also appealed to me. I could work from home or from anywhere in the world, providing there is an Internet connection. What process was involved in debuting your game on the app store? First there was the idea. After we thought it might work we designed how the app would actually work and what it would look like. Then came the programming and this involved many beta’s (test versions) that we would have to

Team Dreamfox -Jonathon Fox, Brian Fox and Hannah Somerville go through and test thoroughly, finding bugs and glitches. When the final beta was reached, and all the screenshots, trailer and text for the App Store were complete, we had to submit Pennychute! to the Apple review process. Once approved, we released the app onto the App Store allowing anyone in the world to download Pennychute! for free. How has the response been so far? The response has been overwhelming so far. The game has now started to acquire downloads from various countries around the world, including Indonesia, United States, Brazil, Germany, Cambodia and the United Arab Emirates, just to name a few. What is the game about? In the game you are a penny (coin) that is dropped into a piggy bank. Inside the belly of the pig there are white bars that are opening and closing at different speeds, trying to stop you reaching the bottom. You have a parachute that you can open and close to help you as you fall. If the coin is hit, game over. However, if the parachute is hit, it will fly off and you will free fall out of your control until you are inevitably crushed between a set of bars. You are trying to descend as far as possible to achieve a high score. Anything else you’d like our readers to know? Are there more ideas in the pipeline? Yes we are currently working on a new game and can’t wait for its release in the near future.

Winners and losers for train commuters The long awaited rail line from Petrie to Redcliffe (Kippa-Ring) – called the Moreton Bay Line – is planned to be operational in mid-2016, bringing more than 100 years of political promises to fruition. As a result, there will be a changed timetable for the Sunshine Coast line which has concerned a number of local commuters, who contacted the GC&M News office. We asked Jeff Addison, Sunshine Coast commuter advocate, what he saw as the issues, pitfalls and benefits. From a comparative study he undertook of the existing timetable versus the proposed timetable, he concludes that there are wins and there are losses. “The changes will result in an effective 11% cut to services overall,” he said. “The good news is that, overall, both morning and afternoon peak services will be faster, and there will be more express services in non-peak times. “The express leg for most trains (each direction) will be from Petrie to Northgate to Eagle Junction to Bowen Hills. The Gympie north trains will run Caboolture to Petrie to Northgate to Bowen Hills and vice versa. “It will mean the elimination of 10 rail buses every day for commuters between Nambour and Caboolture. “It will mean a reduction of 34 services per week – that’s part of the bad news. Fifty rail buses are gone and they are replaced with 16 trains. “Our levels of service will remain unchanged –

Air-conditioning Re-gas and Repairs

18 Free St Beerwah that is not any better – at around 30 minutes for peak times and 90 minutes in non-peak periods. This is compared with frequencies of six to 12 minutes for the new Kippa-Ring line,” Jeff said. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell agrees. “The proposed timetable for the North Coast line is a case of winners and losers - more trains, more express services, but far less buses so an overall reduction in services for the Coast's commuters,” he said. “Disappointingly, whilst initially encouraging community input on the draft, we've received correspondence from the Minister stating that, due to the need to coordinate services with the new Moreton Bay rail link, what we see in the draft is what we will get in the final. Nothing frustrates people more than being asked for their opinion only to be told it will be ignored. “I would encourage local commuters to let me know how the new timetable goes - pros and cons - so I give that ongoing feedback to the government, ideally to inform the next iteration of the timetable.”

Everyone enjoyed an evening of conviviality and were pleased to hear that our efforts on behalf of the students is appreciated. At our next meeting we will have a guest speaker, Ms Nevenka Golc-Clarke, Hon. Counsellor for Slovenia in Queensland.

Demand donation disclosure prior to poll

New Owner for Curves Beerwah

Beerwah local Nikki Bremner had already been a member of Curves Beerwah for a number of years when the chance to purchase the business from long time owner Linda Bibo presented itself. Excited about the huge potential of the women’s only gym, that offers friendly and accessible fitness solutions including circuit training, group fitness and weight loss options – Nikki embraced the opportunity. Nikki is a qualified chef with over 26 years hospitality experience, so she knows a lot about nutrition. She also brings her strong work ethic and approachable people skills to her new role as owner. “Curves offer a rare service specially designed for women – we welcome women of all fitness levels and ages,” says Nikki. Curves at Beerwah has been running successfully since 2006, with previous owner Linda buying into the franchise in 2009. Family care commitments have required that she move on from the business and Linda is thrilled that a long term member, who is clearly passionate about both the brand and the wellbeing of its members, has stepped up to take over ownership.

Previous owner Linda Bibo with new owner of Curves Beerwah, Nikki Bremner Nikki is excited about a number of plans to enhance the business and has already completed her Curves business training and coaching. While long term staff members Toni and Carol will be staying on, Nikki is keen to be a hands on owner and looks forward to spending time on site as the ‘go to’ person for the business. Plans are currently underway to revitalise the decor and Nikki is exploring the options of developing a range of healthy smoothies, energy balls and protein bars specially made in house for members using Curves nutritional products.

All in one fitness re-launch All in One Fitness (formally Maximise Fitness) in Simpson Street at Beerwah held their relaunch day last Saturday. Despite the bad weather first thing, it cleared up, and the day ended up being a success. The All in One Fitness team were joined by a number of other community groups who had stalls on the day including Flush Fitness, Queensland Country Women’s Association – Beerwah Branch, as well as Neddy’s Nosebags and Tibro's Netball Club who helped out with the sausage sizzle and drinks. While the jumping castle from Casper Jumping Castles was a huge hit with the little ones, the special guest on the day, Batman, was a big hit with quite a few of the grown up participants! The owners of All in One Fitness said it was great to see so many Beerwah residents come out and support them on the day! 10

Sunshine Coast Council voters will know who have donated to candidates’ campaign funds before voting occurs in the March 19 elections thanks to an initiative of peak local residents group Organisation of Sunshine Coast Associations of Residents (OSCAR). Queensland electoral laws only require disclosure of donations to the Electoral Commission 15 weeks after an election with the public only becoming aware months after the ballot. “Voters need to know the source of candidates’ campaign funding before they vote to allow them to make an informed choice,” Ian Christesen President of OSCAR said. “Developers are the main contributors to council election campaigns and we want to know who is bankrolling candidates before we vote,” he said. OSCAR, which represents community groups across the Sunshine Coast, said successive state governments have failed to act on independent corruption watchdog recommendations. The Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) report into Gold Coast Council elections of 2004 and the December 2015 report into Ipswich Council Mayor 'Transparency and accountability in local government' by the revamped Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) both recommended disclosure of political campaign donations before poll day. OSCAR and peak residents association Brisbane Residents United (BRU) jointly wrote to Deputy Premier and Minister for Local Government, Jackie Trad in November 2015, requesting changes to the local government to compel prior disclosure of campaign donations and the banning of donations from developers as occurs in New South Wales. Three months later no response or acknowledgement has been received. “Clearly the State Government refuses to act on disclosure and electoral reform so it is left to the community. Disclosure is the first small step in wider electoral reform,” Mr Christesen said. OSCAR is calling on the Crime and Corruption Commission to start an inquiry into political donations something neither the LNP nor the Labor party and their large financial backers want. “The CCC is an independent body and doesn’t need to take direction from government. The development industry would need to be a major focus of any inquiry. Our democracy is increasingly up for sale to the highest bidders,” he said. OSCAR would want the inquiry to consider banning donations from all organisations including unions, businesses and business peak bodies. “A simple principle should apply – if you can’t vote you shouldn’t be able to donate,” Mr Christesen said. To view the website and find out more on what OSCAR is all about, go to www.disclosure.oscar. org.au

Know Your Candidate - Division 1

Know your candidates With the Council Elections confirmed for Saturday, March 19, here at GC&M News we want you to be as informed as possible about the candidates who are running, as well as the ways you can vote before election day, and where you can vote on election day. GC&M News will feature each of the candidates from Division 1, Division 5 and the Mayoralty race, making sure that you know who they are

and what they stand for. This week it’s Division 1 – which covers Beerburrum, Glass House, Beerwah, Peachester, Bald Knob, Landsborough, Mount Mellum, Palmview and part of Glenview and Mooloolah. Next week we cover Division 5 and the Mayoralty candidates. Between then and the election, we will print more information about the candidates and the

election process. You will also most likely see some advertisements paid for by the candidates – these will be distinguished by having the word 'ADVERTISEMENT' included at the top or the bottom. At the same time, the State Government is holding a referendum on the introduction of fixed four year terms for State Parliament. We’ll try to cover that topic as well.

As the owner of Driftwoods Unique Gifts for the last three years, I have had the pleasure of communicating with thousands of local people regarding matters of interest and concern. It has become apparent that the support and advocacy of residents, businesses and community groups within Division 1, should be firmer, more professional and insistent into the future. Large entities have financial and human capacity to advocate their own message, but small businesses and the individual’s voice has been largely ignored. A current instance being the absence of any real council support for the views of residents, businesses and environmental supporters who unanimously pushed for a better design of the Bruce Highway Upgrade than that handed out by Main Roads as a fait accompli. Council have remained substantially silent and people on the west of the Bruce Highway have largely been ignored. Community consultation does NOT mean telling people what is going to happen. Consultation is about listening and genuinely accepting concerns and incorporating change and improvement that results in a better outcome for all stakeholders. A number of recurring issues are evident. The further away from larger population areas of the Sunshine Coast, the more the feeling of isolation and ignoring of people’s issues grows. The failure of council to ensure appropriate levels of infrastructure and service beyond the minimum required of developers is maintained. The most highlighted instance being the single lane each way out of Caloundra’s Belvista Estate where additional lanes and a second access is many years overdue. Residents concern of the failure to address this grossly inadequate infrastructure is yet to be resolved. Beerwah - East and Aura projects similarly concern people. The potential for a disease outbreak resulting from the expanding bat colony roosting within a few hundred metres of the Landsborough Primary School and immediately adjacent to many homes also concern residents greatly. The continual influx of families to our idealistic Sunshine Coast is ultimately dampened by difficulties experienced in gaining local employment, particularly for youth. Council does not currently maximise opportunities for youth employment, I intend for that to dramatically improve. We need stronger, more transparent leadership and advocacy for Division 1, the fastest growing region of the Sunshine Coast Council. www.gcnews.com.au

Four years ago, Glasshouse Country residents set me some clear goals: revive our economy, fix our roads, raise the standards of our public spaces, and protect our environment and country town lifestyles. We've made great progress, and I've shown I can get results on the ground. I'm asking for your vote so I can use the experience I've gained to finish the job. Four years ago, our economy was struggling, and Division 1's biggest township, Beerwah, was described in regional media as ‘dying a slow death’. Now the Sunshine Coast is ranked as one of Queensland's best economies. Business confidence is up, youth unemployment is down, and Beerwah has a strong commercial and community heart after council's town upgrade. Next term, we need to build on this with more job creation programs, and by delivering the gamechanging projects council has set up to inject millions into our economy. We also need projects of the quality of the Beerwah upgrade for other towns. Landsborough especially has increasing problems with commuter parking and peak-hour congestion. If re-elected, I am determined to work with Landsborough residents on a major town upgrade that addresses their problems and aspirations. After that, it's on to Glass House Mountains. Getting transport right is vital. I have achieved upgrades for many long-term ‘problem’ roads like Glenview Road and Storrs Road in Peachester. Next term, I will argue for further upgrades, such as to Roys and Pikes roads. I will also continue pushing for rail duplication, and for a light rail system that would connect the Glasshouse Country railway towns to Caloundra, Maroochydore and the new hospital. The massive suburbs of Caloundra South (Aura) are now under construction. Our modern country town character is our point of difference. We must make it into our biggest strength if we want to retain our identity and protect our environment and the competitiveness of our businesses. We don't want to become another Gold Coast, and we shouldn't. I am confident we are on the edge of a longawaited era of prosperity. With your support, I would love to help make it happen.

Email: daveritsonforscc@gmail.com

As a long time resident of the Sunshine Coast Division 1, I have seen first-hand the issues that concern the community and have worked with local and Government bodies in recent years to ensure better facilities for Division 1. My passion lies in the local transport infrastructure and to this end, I have worked tirelessly with Transport and Main Roads in order to ensure that the Bruce Highway upgrade is designed to service not only through traffic, but local residents and businessesas well. I would also like to see the duplication of the rail line to Landsborough and beyond, and rail services to the coast become a priority, not only for Division 1, but for all residents of the Sunshine Coast. This is essential for our long term regional sustainability. We cannot rely on just the Bruce Highway, no matter how much it is upgraded. Whilst I enjoy and appreciate the ambience and feel of the hinterland towns within Division 1, I also wish to see the new developments of Bellvista, Bells Reach and Aura become some of Australia’s best modern suburbs, and indeed cities. All of the Division needs equal attention with regards to council services and maintenance. I do not wish to see the hinterland towns overlooked when it comes to facilities and infrastructure, and I will work to ensure that we are on an equal footing with all other Divisions within the Sunshine Coast Council. As a small business owner, I understand how every cent counts and I will ensure that funds (your money!) is well spent and that we receive fair value for any projects undertaken. Division 1 is a large and diversified area and I would like to represent all constituents equally. To this end I encourage you to contact me to discuss any concerns that you may have. I will endeavour to perform the core function of being a councillor, representing all of our Division to the best of my ability in order to ensure that Division 1 is Number One.

See what the Division 5 and the Mayoral candidates have to say in next week’s GC&M News. FEBRUARY 17 2016 |

School News Dedication service

Recently the Glasshouse Christian College held its annual college dedication service. The event has become an important tradition in the school calendar. This year was extra special as the college celebrated having more than 1,000 students enrolled. Principal Mike Curtis reminded students of the school’s humble beginnings with only 16 students when it opened 16 years ago. “GCC was built on the back-breaking work and sweat of volunteers. School families and church members worked together clearing the land, laying bricks, and digging drains to make the dream a reality,” he said. “Teachers and staff were hired, but worked for well below industry rates because that is all we could afford at the time. “We need to thank those who went before us and be grateful for their vision, persistence and hard work,” he added. The dedication service was also the first official event for GCC’s new captains. Senior Captains Joshua Andrews and Moale James, Middle School Captains Kirra Dodwell and Joshua Bull, and Primary School Captains Olivia Ellis and Daemon Cruise, ran the service welcoming guests and leading prayers for students, parents, staff and the Board.

School Leaders induction

Beerwah State School recently held a special school parade to celebrate the induction of the 2016 Student Leaders. There were 22 students who were inducted into the traditional Student Leadership program as they enter their final year of Primary School. Positions included school captain, and school vice-captain, members of the Student Council and four sports house captains and vice-captains. Nominations for these positions occurred late last year. All of the students spent time learning their student leadership affirmation which they all proudly recited to the rest of the school, teachers and invited family members and guests. They were presented on stage with their student leadership name badges from principal Janet Austen. The parade was followed by a special morning tea for family members of the students. A great opportunity for their well earned successes to be celebrated. The first job for the eager student council will be to organise and run the school disco coming up in the next few weeks.

Sharing strategies to win together

Contributed by Allison Edwards Glass House Mountains State School has deemed 2016 as the year of engagement with a focus on developing interested and active students and to foster a love of learning. Recently each grade undertook a Team challenge Day with the aim to engross the students and get them out of their comfort zone in a safe and supportive environment. These cooperative activities engage the whole person - hand, heart and mind. These games pose challenges that take savvy, communication and skill, in order to accomplish the task. A lot of fun was had by all, including the teachers but more importantly, there was a noticeable sense of togetherness at the end of the day. This unity is sure to transfuse into the whole school and the wider community. If the object was to increase participation and enjoyment at school, the Team Challenge Day took huge strides towards this, together.

Beerwah School induction

The State member, Mark McArdle, recently attended the Induction Ceremony at Beerwah State School. He congratulated all of the lovely students at Beerwah State School who were part of the 2016 Student Induction ceremony. “I was honoured to be able to speak to and offer some leadership advice to the school’s new leaders. If you always strive to reach above the goals at hand then you will always succeed. “Congratulations to you all and I look forward to seeing some of you at the graduation ceremony later in the year,” he said.

You Said It Say no to four year terms

Thank goodness the question of four year terms for our State government is going to be decided by referendum. Attorney general D'Ath suggests that a four year term gives the government time to plan their work (agenda?) around fixed dates. Does not the same apply to the current three year terms? At least, we the people can remove an inactive government, without prolonging the agony for a further 12 months. Say no to four year terms regardless of the colour of your politics. We are already over governed at Council, State and Federal level. James Aitken Mooloolah Valley

Disturbed by views

While I wish no disrespect to Peter Bowles and Derek Browning, I am disturbed by their views in the matter of climate change and possible human causes. There are scientists in disciplines relating to climate who are convinced that climate change is occurring, and that human activity is a factor, and there are others who take the opposite view. If we take steps to limit carbon emissions, and the climate change proponents turn out to be wrong, one or two generations will suffer unnecessary changes to their way of life. If on the other hand we do nothing, and the climate change proponents are right, our planet will become uninhabitable by humans. For me, the logical course is not to take the risk. Neil Lovett Glass House Mountains

Cyber bullying

We have recently been the victims of Cyber bullying, I always believed that bullying was left behind in the school playground along with school children and fist fights. But now with the online sensation of the internet, it happens here too, just because someone takes a dislike to you. As an adult running their own business it could just be seen as sour grapes, unprovoked and unnecessary. We are not quite the age when the gloves were thrown and it would have been sorted by pistols at dawn. It is displayed from behind a screen, harsh words,

Climate Change/Global Warming Deniers

In a recent issue of GC&M news, we got a duet from a couple of global warming deniers. I always find it interesting to hear from such people who come forward with their conspiracy theories. Thank goodness we live in a society that engages in hearing all opinions. And I admire the persistence of the deniers in the face of overwhelming scientific concurrence that the world is warming. To quote localised selective examples to the contrary belies the concurrence of the evidence that is being gathered worldwide. Try selling your theories to the people of Kiribati who are watching the 313 square miles which comprise the land mass of their country disappear from under their feet as the sea rises. Try telling your story to the Inuit and other people of northern Canada, Alaska, and Greenland whose subsistence existence disappears as the ice caps disappear, not to mention the devastating impacts being experienced by the wildlife in the area. (I guess the people can be retrained to service the growing tourism industry now that the Northwest Passage is open for business 24/7). Preach to the masses of people around the world who are experiencing increasing occurrences of abnormal vicious and more frequent extreme weather events (floods, droughts, cyclones, hurricanes, fires, severe storm activities), but don’t be surprised at the reaction you might get. Argue with the scientific evidence of rising sea temperatures and acidification (the world’s equivalent to the miners canary) and see how far it gets you. Put forward all the conspiracy theories you like as to whether mankind has contributed to any or all of this. But whichever way it falls, surely doing something to mitigate the effects of what is happening must be better than doing nothing, or, worse still, preaching conspiracies to lull people into inertia. Hoodwinked by climate change

Thank you to Derek Browning for the history of our first fleet and early weather recording in Australia. (GC&M News 10/2/2016). Thank you also Peter Bowles in the same edition explaining how ‘eminent scientists’ disproved all the Green alarmist group’s claims that we were suffering ‘Global Warming’. Finally, thank you Leone Newell (The Truth of the Matter, GC&M News 3/2/16) for getting the ball rolling and invoking Lance Pidgeon who has been researching our early Aussie weather records way back to the early 19th century. Clearly, you all believe that man-made climate change is a misnomer and something we should at least be sceptical about or at best disbelieve. I'm not writing to argue with you (even though I believe all the points made are easily refutable). After all, like the anti-vaccinators, people have their beliefs and will choose any form of 'science' to support it. What I would sincerely like to know is: Why do you think the rest of the world has been hoodwinked by climate change science? Why have the vast majority of climate scientists been coerced into perpetrating this lie on the world? What's behind this wrongness? Answering these questions will go a long way to helping me understand why you have come to your point of view. In the meantime I will blindly allow the world's best to make the hard decisions about the planet's delicate eco systems. Looking forward to hearing from you. Peter Gawith Peachester

Is it time to update your rental property? The modern world is constantly changing. Whether it’s trends or technology, it can be hard to keep up with the times. If you’re a current landlord or looking to take out a loan for your first investment property, it is more important than ever to ensure that your current or future real estate is appealing to the modern Australian. But just what is it that the average tenant wants? Technology and access to it With mobile phones and laptops, WiFi and Bluetooth, our epoch is defined by the microprocessor and the Internet. 16

FEBRUARY 17 2016

With a UN report showing that more people in the world own a mobile phone than a toilet, you could find that advertising good reception is more valuable than an extra bathroom. A McCrindle study found that 25 per cent of renters specifically look for a strong mobile signal and 31 per cent looked for cable internet. Advertising or installing these features could generate a lot more interest in your rental property. The furry friends Nearly 50 per cent of all renters have a pet and 35 per cent of renters would get a pet if they were allowed one.

Consider changing your policy on animals and you could potentially double the number of tenants applying for your rental property. Parking The number one feature sought by renters in the McCrindle study was adequate parking, at 38 per cent. Installing parking can be costly, even requiring the landlord to refinance their loan. However, you may be able to find a spot that is a short distance away from the household. It allows you to advertise “nearby” parking if not on-site parking, and your renters will appreciate the additional research.

with Braxton Turnage - Adjust to Life Chiropractic Do you sometimes feel like the Energizer bunny when his battery runs low? You might start the day strong, but by mid-afternoon, you can't quite keep going and going. Fatigue afflicts everyone at one time or another. Assuming your doctor has ruled out serious medical causes, there are a few basic steps you can take to ‘recharge your batteries’. 1. Pace yourself. If you're a go-getter, you probably like to keep going until the job is complete. Instead of burning through all your ‘battery life’ until you’re completely spent, studies show taking time to rest and eat will actually help you get more done in a shorter amount of time. 2. Take a walk or a nap. There's nothing more satisfying than a short power nap when you're pooped out. However, if you have trouble sleeping at night, know that napping can make insomnia worse. If that's the case for you, get moving instead. Get up and walk around the block, or just get up and move around. 3. Rest your mind. In today’s busy stress-filled world, many people are much more ‘mentally fatigued’ than physically fatigued. Schedule a few ‘time outs’ throughout your day where you spend 5-10 minutes letting your brain relax. Practices like meditation, prayer, and mindfulness may assist. Or just find a quiet place to relax. Set an alarm so you can rest at ease without the fear of falling asleep or worrying how much time you have left. 4. Fuel up wisely. A sugary roll from the bakery delivers plenty of calories, but your body tends to metabolise them quickly, and then you can end up with sinking blood sugar and fatigue. You'll maintain a steadier energy level by eating lean protein and unrefined carbohydrates. Don't skip meals, either. Your body needs a certain number of calories to get through the day's work. It's better to space your meals out so your body gets the nourishment it needs all through the day. 6, 21 Peachester Road, Beerwah Ph: 5494 0499 www.adjusttolife.com.au

Living Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley The team from Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre had a big hand in the local Dunny races at Aussie World on Australia Day. Below you will see Maree Chappell and Maureen Palte keeping a look out, and Denise Fidler hanging on for a dunny. From what was a very early and damp start, came a brilliant morning that was lots of fun, with live crosses to the Today show and energetic cheering on of the teams. As with all these things, a bit of waiting round before the next live cross, and off we went again cheering for our team. Considering the amount of rain that fell that morning we did exceptionally well, with only a downpour in the last few minutes. Did you know the visitor centres across the Coast have teams that often attend events to help promote the region? They really are a lot of fun and very social, if you feel you might like to join one of these, please call the centre on the below number.

What’s happening in Mooloolah Public Hall

Contributed by the Hall Committee Secretary Happy New Year and welcome back, everyone. We Need Your Support. Our story … the Hall is not council owned, it is community owned, left by pioneering families to this community. All costs (maintenance, upgrades, insurance) are paid from monies earned through hiring the hall out. Volunteers give many hours of their time to keep your Hall up and running. The present elected management team are all senior citizens. In all fairness, they should be given the chance to step down from their positions, but without input and eagerness from our younger community members, this cannot be done. Public suggestions are great, and many ideas of how to raise money to keep the hall alive are received. ‘Have dances more often’ or ‘run movies or bingo’ or ‘have market days’ – all great ideas but

without younger and more energetic community members willing to take positions on the committee or simply offer help, these tasks are almost impossible. What happens if the costs of maintaining the hall can no longer be met? After 100+ years, the thought of closing its doors, because no one is interested any longer will be a sad day for this community. What we need? Younger energy, younger ideas, entrepreneurial skills to join our team and bring our own local Hall back to the people to enjoy as communities should. Meetings are held (but can always be changed to accommodate working folk) on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 4.00pm in the Hall. You would be warmly welcomed. To have a chat, find out more or simply show your support phone 5494 7748 or 5494 7793 or 5494 7084. Come on, give it a go! Make your Hall part of your community once again.

Col’s mystery A lifelong lover of SLR photography saw me purchase my first digital camera in the year 2000. It had a mere 3.2 megapixels of 'thingy' and I couldn't wait to use it. Despite the rain, I waltzed around Landsborough and took shots of everything. It’s 2016 now, and I had the use (on trial) of a Canon digital camera, with all the bells and whistles, including 21 megapixels of 'thingy'. I didn't waltz around Landsborough 15 years later of course, I strolled and took pics of everything to compare with my first buy. To my amazement I found this anomaly, who stole the ding dong?

Phoenix

Maleny Film Society screens Phoenix on Saturday, February 20 at 7.15pm at the Maleny Community Centre. Set in post war Berlin, Phoenix is an unfolding story about a German Jewish nightclub singer, Nelly Lenz (Nina Hoss) who survives Auschwitz only to receive a facial wound days before liberation. After facial reconstruction Nelly returns to Berlin to search for her husband Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld) who may have betrayed her to the Nazis. When she finds him, he doesn’t recognise her as his wife but rather sees a woman who bears a striking resemblance to her. He craftily devises a plan to get Nelly to impersonate his ‘dead’ wife to claim her inheritance. Dinner at 6.00pm is catered by Spaghetti Junction. Pre-bookings can be made by members via the website. Tickets at the door for non-members. Check the website www.malenyfilmsociety.info for details.

In the Garden

Environment

with Brownie

Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc.

Indoor plants are good for you

With the plethora of home renovation shows on TV, you don’t see too many which consistently have indoor plants as an integral part of the décor. But according to research from the University of Queensland, a space enriched with plants makes people happier. Although the study looked at an office environment, the outcomes would most definitely translate across into the home environment too. The study found that adding plants to an office also improved employee satisfaction and quality of life. They found that a green office improves physically, mentally and emotionally involvement, as it helps the workplace become a more enjoyable, comfortable and profitable place to be. The findings suggest that investing in landscaping – whether that is in the office or at home – will pay off through an increase in quality of life. So if you want to improve your quality of life, it could be as easy as having a parlour palm, some African violets or a philodendron in your lounge room.

Epsom salts … do they work in the garden?

People say that Epsom salts are good for the tomatoes. But is this really the case? Epsom salts are a naturally occurring bitter tasting mineral, discovered in 1695 in the well water of Epsom, England. The key ingredient in Epsom salts, as far as plants are concerned, is magnesium. Magnesium is one of the six plant macronutrients, elemental nutrients required by plants in relative abundance, along with nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, and sulphur. Adding Epsom salts can correct a soil that is deficient in magnesium, sometimes evident by yellowing between the green veins of leaves. Magnesium also acts as a hormone trigger to encourage flowering in tomato plants, rose bushes, and flowering shrubs. Tomatoes, capsicums and rose bushes benefit the most from a dose of Epsom salts, because they have a high demand for magnesium. Try mixing two tablespoon of Epsom salts into a bucket of water, then either watering this mix to the soil or spraying it directly on plants. The magnesium is fairly soluble and so will be leached out when it rains … so a once a month application should be OK.

We care about our environment

Weeds, weeds and more weeds… then there are Pine trees with Ann McGrath One of the joys of our native bush is the wide variation of colour, texture shape and size of our vegetation.

By weeds, I am referring to those introduced species that threaten to overtake and demolish our native species and these exotic pines belong in that category: Slash pine (Pinus elliottii) and Radiata pine (Pinus radiate). These trees, Native to North America, belong in plantations but unfortunately do not understand the rules and have become environmental weeds along the east Coast of Australia. The birds don’t seem to find them useful except for the odd nest and the thick layer of pine needles on the ground discourages the growth of any healthy understory. Add to this, the sameness of their foliage and the ease at which their seed germinates, and they really have nothing going for them in our bushland. When we purchased our four acres, one of the first things we did was to have 80 pine trees felled, some of which were up to 70 cm in diameter. Thankfully they do not reshoot or need poisoning. What a difference it made to be able to see the bush in its natural glory. We left the stumps standing, burnt some of the trees and used some of the logs for borders around our would-be bush areas. Four years later, there is barely a trace of them and the bush is flourishing. The yellow tailed Black Cockatoos have discovered the grubs in the remaining logs and stumps and are quickly turning what is left of them into sawdust. Gotta love the bush! What's left of the pine trees after four years

Banksia oblongifolia Aptly named Dwarf Banksia, Banksia oblongifolia is the smallest of the local Banksia species growing to a maximum of 1.5 metres. This Banksia is multi stemmed with stiff, dark green, serrated leaves, which are much paler on the underside. Currently flowering in our National Parks, these shrubs have pale yellow flower spikes at the end of the branches, which are similar to those of the much larger, Banksia integrifolia. The flowers are followed by woody seed cones which require heat to open and release the seeds. A most attractive feature of this plant is the velvety, rusty coloured terminal leaves and stems, that appear during periods of new growth.

Sing Sunshine Coast - The harmonies are ringing now that the Sing Australia Sunshine Coast group has started the new year. Local leader Karen Froelich said there were over 140 Sing Australia groups in communities throughout Australia. This is an opportunity for men and women to gather once a week for the joy of singing in a group, without needing to confine themselves to the privacy of the shower or the car, or worrying about perfection. There are no auditions, and members don’t need to be able to read music. But Karen says, it’s not just a sing-a-long. "We are fortunate that our conductor and accompanist are both accomplished musicians, who help bring out the best blend of voices, and encourage us to challenge ourselves, whether it’s a modern pop song, a traditional feel, a show tune or a classical piece,’ said Karen. ‘New members are always welcome.’ Sing Australia Sunshine Coast rehearses every Monday night from 7.00pm to 9.00pm at St Lukes Lutheran Church Hall, Sydney Street, Nambour. For further information contact Karen on 0401 184 132, Di on 5441 1032, or Barrie on 5445 2258.

To ensure all community notices can be printed each month please keep your contributions to a maximum of 100 words.

From the churches Pastor Aaron Jackson - Church on the Rise

Change is the only constant Change is all around us. In my five minute commute to the office each day, I drive past change both morning and afternoon. There are road works, and the progress of those road works, fruit stalls with new specials, notice boards with encouraging messages, change is all around us. There is also the change we want to implement in our personal lives. Eat less, sleep more, save money, exercise, change of diet, and the list goes on. In life we find external change easier to accept because a lot of the time it doesn’t have an immediate effect on our time or space. We all want to better ourselves, so why do wefind the process of change so confronting. The reason is because once we have decided to make a change we also need to become accountable, and that is uncomfortable. If we truly yield to change, the season of discomfort is replaced with a season of ease, but then the process must begin again, because with change comes growth. Change can come in many and varied forms such as trials, challenges, heart break and victories and yet all these areas can produce benefit in our lives, hopefully for the better.

FEBRUARY 17 2016

There is a time to plant, a time to reap, a time to live and a time to die, a time to laugh and a time to mourn. The bible says Consider it all joy, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Change challenges our convictions and our faith. While there is no joy in cancer, bankruptcy and other things we face, there is joy when we find rest for our souls through Christ Jesus, no matter the circumstance. The peace that God gives surpasses human understanding, it’s a peace that guards your heart and guides your steps. God through the bible gives us wisdom to handle change. Change is inevitable. But how change changes you, is your call. Change will either make you better or make you bitter; the choice is up to you. Amen

AFL Auskick at Landsborough

Contriubted by Craig Bales Glasshouse Hinterland's Club Auskick will be commencing this Thursday, February 18 from 3.30pm until 4.30pm at our grounds at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. Club Auskick is for five and six year olds, and those who are older who don't want to play club football. Auskick is for both boys and girls and is run over a nine week period. NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for primary school aged children and their families. Sunshine Coast Auskick Co-ordinator Rohan Briggs said that Auskick is all about teaching boys and girls the skills of AFL in a friendly, safe environment and most importantly having fun while beginning their AFL experience. The rules are modified to give children a really gentle introduction to AFL. Parents are encouraged to join in all the activities and the kids' faces just light up when they see mum or dad having a kick or taking a mark. If you require further information please contact Craig on 0414 225 329 or simply rock up on Thursday, February 18!

They say there is a reason, they say that time will heal. But neither time nor reason will change they way we feel. For noone knows the heartache, that lies behind out smiles. Noone knows how many times we have broken down and cried. We want to tell you something, so there won’t be any doubt. You’re so wonderful to think of, but so very hard to be without.

Just for Laughs Mad, brain fight There are three friends named Mad, Brain, and Fight. One day Fight went missing and his friends Mad and Brain started searching for him. Then Brain said, "Mad, let's file a missing person report with the police." When they were about to walk into the police station, Brain said, "Mad, you go and make the report. I will wait for you here." Mad said, "Okay." Mad walked in but no police officers paid attention to him. Then he saw a policeman drinking a cup of coffee. Mad went to the officer, smacked the table, and the cup of coffee flew in the air, landing in the officer's lap. Angry, the policeman asked, "Are you looking for a fight?" Mad replied, "Yes, I am." The policeman asked,

"Are you mad?" Mad replied, "Yes, I am Mad." The policeman then asked, "Don't you have a brain?" Mad replied, "Brain is outside sir."

One scary chicken A little girl and her older brother were visiting their grandfather's farm. The brother decided to play a trick on his sister. He told her that he discovered a man-eating chicken. Scared, she ran inside in fear. Then he heard his sister scream so the brother ran inside immediately. She was screaming at their grandfather, who was eating a plate of fried chicken. "What is it?" he asked. She turned to him in fear and said,"it- it's- it’s a man eating chicken!" Submitted by Rick, Glass House

CANCER June 22 – July 22 You may want to reorganise your current finances and assess where your income resources are best found over the next couple of years. As the planet Venus is in your finance sector, that works well with your Saturn travelling through your zone of health. An emotional switch after February 19. LEO July 23 – August 22 Concentrate this week on any outstanding neglected work. Also it’s good to let bygones be bygones! For a few days your heart may not be in whatever you have to do in the material world. Regardless of that, benefits can be derived from taking a time out. This weekend feel confident with others. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Uranus brings exciting links through the rest of February with unusual profit margins from a bonus or business fund. Once the Sun changes into the Piscean sign from February 19, there is urgency or drama about your needs that could lead to a fairy tale end to the month. Get time to yourself! LIBRA September 23 – October22 The planets are lining up to give you new information and ideas. You can develop a partnership or even a relationship that is stable and mature as well as fresh, revitalising, and exciting. Once the Sun enters Pisces on February 19, your energy levels may float in watery energy. Maintain routines.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Towards the end of this month a trio of planets could dramatically crystallise gains, home comforts or improvements. It is possible that you will receive some funds from a relative or be the generous benefactor of a kin folk in need. Put into practice innovative methods that benefit work and home. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The planets are giving you the voice you need to make your desires known and to gain that which you want. Take a shot at doing what you love to do, and see if you can make some money from it! With Saturn moving through your sign, this could be a career or game changing year for you now. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 There is restlessness in the air, as there is a full Moon coming up soon that may put something confusing in your way. That needs immediate action. Perhaps moving, renovating or even downsizing. These major moves may be hard, but you are not one to shy away from reaching a goal. AQUARIUS January20 – February 19 A sense of renewal and transformation can mark the second half of this month. You may feel refreshed from a brush with a free spirit, or the free-spirited side of yourself. A good time to enjoy one special person in a quiet private cubby hole! February 23 has a full Moon in Virgo to cover your bills!

Week beginning 17/02/2016 PISCES February 20 – March 19 You might find this week the emotional necessities of loved one calls you back into the materialistic world for attention and resolution. Over the weekend there are good reasons to show the divide between your need for solitudes and one for work. The full Moon balances your partnership. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week you have distant news, perhaps from in-laws, some being on the cheerful side, and others may be putting a damper on things. There is a feeling to withdraw from the outside world, but this is just to turn your attention to your own self-identity. More soulful feelings now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Once this Sun enters Pisces, on February 20, you are heading towards an emotionally chaotic Virgo full Moon. You will feel attracted to new friendships and other emotional connections. There might be something legitimate to celebrate and that comes up with restless energy on weekend. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 A change of scenery will do you good! If it has to be shopping there are too many confusing desires, so leave your purchases for another week. It is difficult to acquire what you want, follow through on plans to buy or sell after February 19 when the Sun enters Pisces. Plans get approval.
