Hi Everyone...

What's Happening April 2018

This year, with Anzac Day falling on a Wednesday – which is one of the days that the GC&M News is delivered – I just wanted to give readers a heads up that some households won’t receive their papers until Thursday next week. And to ensure that those of you (including our delivery drivers) who plan to participate in one of the local marches or attend a service across the many held in our area can do so, all of the details have been included on page 6. One difference you might notice is that this year’s march at Maleny will be led by a group of women marching under the banner of ‘Combined Current and Ex-service Women’. You may remember that we brought you a story before Easter about the ‘By the Left Campaign’ and I am looking forward to seeing just how many women the campaign has been able to encourage to participate in this year’s march. As usual Brownie and I will be attending as many Anzac activities as possible and will bring a great spread of photos in the May 2 edition and, if you are really proud of a photo you take on the day and would like to share it with other readers, please email it through to editorial@gcnews.com.au.

yesteryear games to be played on the oval, and the unveiling of the Centenary Pavement Project. Other highlights of the day will be a roll call of every student who has attended the school by decade, the Cutting of the Centenary Cake, working out who are the oldest and youngest students present on the day, a group photo, as well as performances by the school’s choir, instrumental band, and Xylophone Ensemble. The day will be officially opened at 10am, however registration will be from 9.30am. Speaking to Tina it is clear to see she has shown an enormous amount of enthusiasm to make the day something really memorable for those who attend. However, I get the sneaky feeling the real success of the day for Tina and those who attend won’t just be all of what has been organised, but the genuine heartfelt pleasure of seeing people reunited, catching up and sharing stories of not just their school days but their experiences growing up and living in Beerburrum. Come and chat to our deli team today! If you would like to know more about the event you can also check Evyie Jones, Jack Jones and Joel Raleigh, Ruby Jones and Zara out the Beerburrum State School Chawla get into the spirit of one hun dred years Centenary Celebrations Facebook page.

This Sunday, April 22, the Beerburrum State School will celebrate 100 years since the school first opened its doors with a huge day full of activities to mark the significant occasion. Planning and organising the event has been underway for the past few years and speaking to former school student, current staff member and the Beerburrum Centenary Celebration Coordinator, Tina Davidson, she is really excited that the big day is almost here. Tina clearly appreciates all of the efforts put in by those that have organised the day’s program of activities including the special guest speakers, historical talks, the self-guided tour of the Heritage Trail, the Old Classroom Display,

By Lea Parkes Hundreds of dog owners will converge on the Beerwah Sportsgrounds for four traditional dog shows, as well as the popular dog sports competitions of Flyball and Updog Challenge this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Community members are encouraged to come along for a free day out and enjoy the spectacle of both the ‘beauty competitions’ and the mesmerising action of the fast-moving dog sports. The Beerwah-based Sunshine Coast Kennel Club will be hosting four traditional dog shows which will kick off at 5pm on Friday night and continue across Saturday and Sunday from 9am each day. The Championship Dog Shows will see around six hundred dogs from over a hundred breeds competing for Best of Breed through several stages until the Best in Show is judged. Along with the championships there will also be a sweepstakes open to baby puppies and puppies of all breeds. There will also be competition for Junior Handlers aged from 7-19 years. These dog handlers of the future will compete to best present their canine charges The trainee judges will also be given an opportunity to learn the subtle art of dog judging at the Open Show where points are not awarded but the focus is on training. Along with the show, the Kennel Club is expecting huge interest in the dog sports competitions organised by Orange Krush, a South East Queensland Dog Sport Team, where the emphasis is on fun for both handlers and dogs.

There will be teams travelling from as far as the ACT to compete in this event, as well as many local teams. On Saturday from 9am you can see Flyball and on Sunday from 10am will be the Updog Challenge. Flyball is a relay race involving dogs in teams of four, retrieving balls and racing over hurdles on a timed course. And Updog Challenge will see handlers and dogs competing in various games using agility equipment such as canine disks and frisbees. The Beerwah Showgrounds is located at 2 Sportsground Drive, and is accessed off Simpson Street, take the turn into the entrance across the road from Aldi. Day

New park to honour local heritage By Lea Parkes At last week’s Maleny Commerce breakfast meeting, held in the Maleny Light Horse Regiment’s Beersheba Living Museum, the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) announced their partnership with a number of local service organisations who will work together to create a ‘Memorial and Pioneer Community Park’. Club president Greg Williams explained that their club had been negotiating the creation of the park for a number of years but the historically-themed concept was raised with them by the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club and, as part of the MDSRC’s commitment to the community, they thought the idea had great merit. “The idea behind the Memorial and Pioneer Community Park is that it will recognise the history and role of indigenous, pioneering and WW1 and WW11 service women of the Blackall Range,” said Mr Williams. “This would be achieved through the installation of appropriate heritage plaques and signs in the park and along a tree lined avenue leading to the museum, as well as commissioning local artists to

create seated statues of Indigenous, pioneer settler and military service women.” A 1.05 hectare (or 2.6 acre) section of the Maleny Sports Park, above and adjacent to the Light Horse training field, has been identified as the suitable location, on land originally settled by the Hankinson family. Although planning is in the early stages, the multiorganisational community project will be project managed by four of Maleny’s service organisations – Lions, Rotary, the RSL and Apex – in partnership with the MDSRC. MDSRC is currently completing an overall site plan for their leased area, Maleny Sports Park, which will be sent to the Sunshine Coast Council for ratification with the update of their five-year Business Plan. The park concept has been ratified by the Precinct Advisory Group (consisting of all leaseholders and sub-leaseholders) and the Sunshine Coast Council has been involved and consulted. “The lower portion of the park will be fenced and used as a children’s playground, with seating around the perimeter for adult supervision,” explained Mr Williams. “This section has been chosen because it is near the proposed car park to be developed by Council which will also be used by Riverside Walk and park patrons. “It is proposed that the upper portion of the park will have picnic facilities, viewing platforms, lighting and, in due course, the proposed statues. “The park will complement the Riverside Walk, the Heritage Walk and Heritage Listed Pattemore House,” Mr Williams said.

MDSRC's Greg Williams and Gail Denver (each end), Clarke Alexander - Maleny RSL, Garry Astill - Lions Club, with Rick Vickers and Alan Wilson - Rotary Club MDSRC Vice-President Gail Denver said that the clubs involved will provide some seed funding towards getting the project started, which will also serve to boost the dollar-for-dollar values presented by available grants. “Various grants are available for recognition of Aboriginal and settlement heritage, as well as for the purpose of recognising the contribution of women in our district,” said Ms Denver. “Fencing, equipment and lighting would be funded by sourcing appropriate Council grants, while earth works would be carried out by various local contractors who have already made similar contributions on the Precinct. “Once the facilities are completed the park would be handed over to the Sunshine Coast Council who would then be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the facility. “It is expected that the project timeframe for development, excluding installation of the statues, would be over two financial years once work had commenced.”

New direction for Landsborough development In what is most likely a first of its kind for Landsborough, the town is set to significantly grow with Sunshine Coast Council receiving a development application (MCU18/0085) for a total of 63 bedrooms on a residential 4,703sq.m block. The land and single storey house at 37 Maleny Street (on the corner of Maleny Street and Gympie Street North), was recently sold for $825,000. The proposed development will see three double storey blocks constructed. Two blocks will house a range of two and three bedroom units, each around 149sq.m in size. The third block will house three single bedroom units on the ground floor with 10 ‘rooming accommodation’ units on the second floor, each being a roomy 17.5sq.m. It has a communal kitchen around 4m x 5m and two lounge areas and a 2.27m x 2.29m laundry. One unit is slightly larger and can accommodate a person with mobility difficulties. Although the planning scheme allows for onsite management with this style of accommodation, the application proposes that there will be no such provision at this development. The 23 multiple dwelling units and 10 ‘rooming accommodation’ units in total could house up to 96

people. Parking has been provided for 32 cars, with the entry and exits being onto Gympie Street North. As the land is zoned for Medium Density Residential, the town planners suggest that the development is code assessable, meaning that there will be no public notification and requirement for public submissions. Despite this, the planning document identifies that the proposal does fall short of Council’s strategic planning guidelines in a few areas, such as private open space, site coverage, setbacks, communal space and retaining mature trees. In fact, the development will leave no trees or vegetation, with everything being bulldozed. According to the town planners, the proposed development provides an accommodation offering which delivers greater housing diversity. Additionally, they say that the development has been designed, such that it contains a scale and intensity that is sympathetic to surrounding area, with built form elements, which are reflective of traditional Queensland architecture. With a large chunk of Landsborough similarly zoned, this style of development may be commonplace in the years to come.

Community News Show supports young locals

For more than a decade the Ladies of the Quota Club of Maleny have been holding an annual Quilt Show each year as a major fundraiser for the numerous local community initiatives that they support. The event is held over the weekend of May 5 and 6 to coincide with the Maleny Wood Expo when there are lots of extra visitors and locals out and about. It is on at the Maleny High School on the Saturday from 9.30am-4.30pm and the Sunday from 9.30am-4pm. Entry is $5 which raises funds for the ‘Hear & Say Centre’ at Nambour which provides an early intervention program that is essential for young children who have been diagnosed with a hearing loss at birth or soon after. A major raffle with a beautiful quilt as the prize is held at the event with the tickets sales going to support the STEMM project at Burnside High School at Nambour that cares for teenagers who are pregnant who want to finish their high school education. The unit also includes a crèche and nursery where the babies are cared for by volunteers whilst their mums continue with their education. The program encourages these students to take advantage of medical, legal, dietary and paediatric advice which is provided by qualified volunteers. If you would like to support the Quota ladies’ fundraising efforts, make sure you come along and have a look at the beautiful quilts on display, purchase some raffle tickets or pop in for morning tea or lunch on the day.

Biggest Morning Tea planning underway The Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea is now in its 25th year and it has become one of the largest and most successful fundraising events in Australia. These events create a great way for people to catch up with family, friends, and neighbours for a cuppa and to help raise funds to create a cancer free future. Once again the Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle, and the Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific will be hosting an event at the Caloundra CCSA Hall in Nutley Street, and the RSVP list is filling fast. Now in its fifth year, their May 25 event starts at 9am and is open to everyone in the community for just a gold coin donation. Mr McArdle said: “For a gold coin donation you will be treated to a handmade morning tea featuring delicious savories and sweets, you will hear from guest speakers and have a chance to win door prizes, while getting out of the house and meeting new people in your community.” RSVP by contacting the Caloundra Electorate Office on 5329 4100 by May 19 or by visiting www.markmcardlemp.com. To find out more about hosting an event yourself check out www. biggestmorningtea.com.au and, if you are already planning to host an event locally and would like GC&M News to promote it, make sure you email editorial@gcnews.com.au with the details so we can share it with our readers.

Call of the choir

By Sonia Clark The newest member of Sunshine Coast Choral Society relocated to Beerwah from New Zealand only a month ago, yet Jessica Fleming didn’t hesitate to join the choir almost as soon as she arrived! With only a few weeks to prepare for the choir’s upcoming Anzac Day related performance of ‘Requiem’ by Sir Karl Jenkins, Jessica has been practising at home every other day. The concert will be held at the Gregson and Weight Chapel, Wises Road, Buderim at 2pm on Sunday April 22. Jessica said: "The piece combines traditional Japanese haiku with more traditional features of a Requiem Mass which really resonates with me and I wish to dedicate my singing to harmony and peace.” Originally from the east coast of the United States, Jessica spent many years in New Mexico before moving to New Zealand where she has spent the last 25 years. A personal and spiritual counsellor with over 50 years’ experience, she followed an intuitive calling to move to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Jessica and her partner moved here a few weeks ago and is thrilled to be here. Having sung in choirs and church groups since she was nine years old, upon arrival in Beerwah, Jessica immediately went online to seek out a local choir group. After a bit of research, she found the Sunshine Coast Choral Society to be the most promising. “All my adult life I’ve regularly sung in a variety of choral groups, and I particularly love the great music of the great composers – so I was naturally attracted to the performance work of this choir,” Jessica said. “They have a wonderful choral master and the group have been unbelievably friendly and welcoming.” To book tickets for the concert go to www.suncoastchoral.org.au or call Colleen on 5477 7652.

First up in June, and already in pre-production, is Gilbert and Sullivan’s hilariously funny political satire ‘Iolanthe’. With an expansive set and gorgeous costumes coming all the way from Perth for this production, it promises to be one of the best-staged musical shows in the region this year. Don’t you wish you had a fairy godmother that could wave a wand and turn today’s politicians into normal people? This opera shows how it is done! As if that wasn’t enough, the Singers are planning to stage a gala production of Mozart’s comic opera ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ in November, in support of Rotary’s charity program for the year. This abridged version of the muchloved opera will not only be a ‘must-see’ event, but will support a variety of good causes through the Rotary connection. Finally, the Singers plan to round out the season with its traditional program of Christmas songs in December. While often not attracting the praise of the big stage shows, the quality of the music on display in this yuletide program is usually second to none. Many of you will be long-time supporters of Maleny Singers, and you know what quality of production to expect from Musical Director Margaret Taylor. For those who do not, don’t miss the chance to see wonderful musical productions sung by very talented local voices!

Gridiron success for Brad

Brad Ebdon of Landsborough got to do what many of us may have only recently dreamed about, and that is to wear an Australian sporting team uniform. In the days he attended Beerwah primary he may not have thought he would end up playing the American sport of Gridiron wearing a green and gold uniform. However back in 2012 Brad first started playing the sport, joining the Sunshine Coast Spartans Gridiron Club where he is still a member. Brad’s very proud dad, Dave, told us that in Brad’s first year with the U/18 team they won the Colts Sun Bowl premiership, and during that same year Brad also played AFL with the Caloundra Panthers U/18 team which won the pennant that year. “When Brad moved in to the seniors’ grade for Gridiron he won the Rookie of the Year in his first season,” Dave said. “Then two years later he was awarded the prestigious MVP (Most Valuable Player) for the Spartans. “The same year he was selected in the Queensland Sun Devils squad and played against

South Australia, NSW and WA, where they conquered all other states and won the national title. “Showing a solid performance for the Queensland team, Brad gained selection in the development camp team for the Australian Outback Gridiron. “Having travelled to Tahiti playing against teams from America, Samoa and Tahiti, Brad is again in the Queensland Sun Devils squad looking to take out the AGL title for the second time. Their next game is at 1pm on Sunday, April 21 at the Easts Leagues Club at Coorparoo.” For more game details, go to the Australian Gridiron League Facebook page.

Night works on Highway

Night works are due to start to resurface a one-kilometre northbound section of the Bruce Highway, between Tibrogargan Creek and the Johnston Road interchange. Transport and Main Roads North Coast District Director Leah McKenzie said the $400,000 project would involve removing the existing road surface, pavement repairs and resurfacing. “We plan to do the works between 8pm and 5am when traffic volumes are low to minimise disruption but road users should allow extra travel time and expect minor delays.” Works were expected to start on Tuesday April 17 and take five nights to complete, weather permitting.

Update with Ursula Starkovsky Chamber President

End of an era for Humphries and Fisk Chamber no longer responsible for CCTVs The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce can no longer afford the costs associated with maintaining the CCTV cameras in the townships of Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough. Chamber President Ursula Starkovsky said for the past three years, both the local businesses and the wider community in all three of these Hinterland towns have benefitted from having access to the footage of the CCTVs installed in various locations in the townships. During that entire time the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce has maintained and serviced the cameras and paid these costs from the membership fees collected. A few weeks ago, the Chamber made an urgent appeal to businesses to join the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce to ensure that the CCTVs remain functioning and provide security within the townships. “Unfortunately, very few businesses saw the value in taking Chamber membership to ensure the service would continue to be provided,” Ursula said. “As we had previously advised the local community, it is only the 70 Chamber members who pay for the security of entire central business precincts and this is just not sustainable. “We have now cancelled all maintenance and servicing of the cameras with immediate effect. “The installations and cameras will be staying, and individual businesses can now choose to pay for the costs associated with servicing and maintaining the cameras themselves,” Ursula said. If you would like to know more about doing this, you can contact Ursula on ursulas@gcfn.com.au or phone her on 0459 995 979.

After nearly thirty years of successful property sales and management in Maleny, Ian and Pat from Humphries and Fisk Real Estate have decided to embark on a new chapter and retire from office life. After owning one of the longest running real estate agencies in Maleny, the couple are now officially “sun seekers” who will be heading up to the warmer climes of Townsville. They will be heading off to Madrid, Spain in October/November and they are looking forward to travelling further afield and exploring the globe. Ian and Pat opened the business in 1989 following Ian’s “discovery” of Maleny while on a break from his family farm at Guyra in New South Wales. Previously Ian worked as a fine arts dealer before opening up an LJ Hooker office in the ‘Old Fire Station’ building upon moving to Maleny. Pat had been involved with real estate since purchasing her first home in her twenties and had enjoyed careers in administration and management as well as successful ownership of a number of businesses before she and Ian decided to open Humphries and Fisk Real Estate. The couple went on to purchase the ‘Old Post Office’ building and subsequently relocated their office. Now looking forward to a well-deserved break that undoubtedly involves sunset cocktails by the water, Ian and Pat have entrusted their property management and sales portfolio to Rodney Millett and the team at Maleny & Hinterland Real Estate. Ian said: “We chose to sell to Rodney and Catherine Millett of Maleny & Hinterland Real Estate as we really felt they were the best people to entrust our clients to. Not only are they keen and professional, being another independent agency means everything stays local.” After decades of being an integral part of the Maleny “village” community, Ian and Pat will be greatly missed and fondly remembered as they now seek new and exciting adventures.

You Said It Beerwah State School intersection

I heartily agree with the writer of the letter concerning the dangerous intersection at Beerwah State School, and the situation will get ever worse as more houses are built in the new estates off Old Gympie Road. However, it is a State Government responsibility and we were told that the ALP had a plan for fixing the drainage problems and installing traffic lights if they were re-elected. They must be held to their promise. Nevertheless, I intend to note it as a traffic hotspot when I return Andrew Wallace's questionnaire. I shall also list it under suggested improvements to our local area. Sheila Williams Beerwah

Not fair for customers

Recently when I was visiting Dubbo in NSW I shopped in both Coles and Woolworths and also visited Aldi. What caught my eye was that the price of the Home Brand Soft Drinks which had been 75 cents at both Coles and Woolworths had been increased by 15 cents a bottle. The reason for the price increase was because now the State Government is giving customers 10 cents a bottle back at various collection agencies across the State. So these businesses had put their drinks up 15 cents, which would mean that they were making an additional five cents from each sale. Whereas Aldi, which had sold similar drinks at 69 cents had put the price of their product up by 11 cents to 80 cents which seems very fair. I spoke to a group of people who had gathered three shopping trolleys of empty soft drink bottles and were attempting to get the 10 cents per bottle from the collection machine. The process was terribly slow and should the bottle or can be damaged in any way, then forget it as the label had to be blemish free. Hopefully, should Queensland decide to follow suit, they firstly might make sure that their equipment works and that the companies such as Coles and Woolworths do not do what they did in NSW and put their drinks up an extra five cents. Beerburrum School Centenary

I read with interest the article in this week’s GC&M News about the origin of Beerburrum State School. My father, who came to Australia from England after WW1, possibly 1919/1920 with his foster parents, lived on a pineapple farm at Beerburrum with his foster father’s sister

Intersection of Old Gympie Road and Peachester Road, Beerwah

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell believes that Labor based a lot of their 2017 election promises in Glass House on issues and campaigns that he has been fighting for and petitioning for over the last several years. One such promise was a $4m upgrade at the intersection of Old Gympie Road and Peachester Road at Beerwah. Recently Andrew asked a Question on Notice to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads requesting project details including timeframes, project designs (traffic lights, roundabout or another solution) and proposed community engagement activities relevant to the project. Whilst the Minister has confirmed that $4 million has been allocated to undertake an

and her soldier settler husband whose names I don’t know. Unfortunately the scheme was unsuccessful and when Dad arrived, the two farmers were in dire financial straits and virtually lived off Dad’s foster parents who were not much better off. Dad’s foster parents, who I looked upon as Grandma and Grandpop gave my Dad their surname... Sanders. Dad would have gone to Beerburrum School in the 1920s. After a short while the Sanders family moved to Randwick in Sydney. Marie Davis Glenview

Re: Terrifying experience

I agree with Kathryn R of Glass House Mountains in GC&M News March 11 edition. I cannot believe that Main Roads and the local Council continually ignore this dangerous intersection out of Australia Zoo, where tourists from around the world, including Europe and USA, with their opposite side of road rules, frequently visit. Australia Zoo generates many thousands of dollars towards our local and state economy, so why the lack of consideration in keeping the Zoo exit safe? This unacceptable situation would be resolved by installing traffic lights. Politicians and bureaucrats should be ashamed of their lack of responsibility for the safety of visitors and locals alike. How many injuries and/or deaths must occur before action is taken? J Fleming Landsborough

upgrade, Andrew said he was not forthcoming with any indication of design, timeframes, or type of community consultation that would be carried out. Andrew wants to assure Glass House constituents that he will continue to follow up this project with the Minister to ensure that it is not put on the backburner and rehashed as a 2020 election promise.

Beware of phone scammers

For a number of years we have received nuisance telephone calls which appeared to be from overseas callers that were obviously scams. However in recent weeks these calls have become more sophisticated and devious, we had one call claiming to be from the head office of our bank in Melbourne and telling us that the bank had overcharged us but the caller could help us to get the money refunded. A second call said that the caller was from the “Telstra ‘do not call register’ in Perth” and that they had noticed that we were paying our phone bill with a “very outdated credit card” and that we should change this. After speaking to our phone and internet provider, it was suggested that we keep a note of the date and exact time of these calls and advise the provider, after we had received four or five calls like this. This we did, and we seem to be on the way to having these calls blocked if we follow certain procedures and pay about $5.50 a month for the service. I believe that this is well worth the money, as we had got to the point of hanging up on callers once we became suspicious of their intentions. We wish to alert people to these types of scams and to stress that we should all be very wary of these calls and make sure that we do not give out any personal or financial information over the phone. 7 mortgage terms you need to know So, you’ve decided to buy a house. Choosing between polished floors and carpet is one thing. Getting your head around the logistics of financing your house is a whole other ball game. To give you a head start, we’ll take you through some key mortgage terms. Mortgage: Let’s start with the basics. What exactly is a mortgage? A mortgage is a legal agreement between the property owner and the lender, such as a bank or building society, where the property owner gives the lender the power to sell the property if the borrower defaults. The agreement is void when the loan is paid back in full. Fixed-rate mortgage: A fixed-rate is when the interest rate is fixed (unchanging) for the term of the agreement. A two-year fixed rate will be fixed at a certain rate for two years, 12

for example. The advantage of a fixed rate is that you know how much interest you will be expected to pay. The downside is that rates can go up and down, so you take the risk that you will miss out on interest rates falling. Usually, you weigh up the security of knowing your interest rate against the risk of paying more in interest. Variable interest rate: A variable interest rate is flexible, meaning it is subject to change. Your interest rate may vary depending on market and economic factors. The rate is set by your lender, and can either go up or down. The risk is that your interest repayments can increase beyond your means. Deposit: The deposit is the amount you put down to secure your property. A typical deposit is 20 per cent of the value of the house, although there are ways of making a smaller deposit, such as taking out lender’s

mortgage insurance or using a guarantor. The deposit amount can vary from lender to lender, and might be dependent on your financial situation. Lender’s mortgage insurance: Lender’s mortgage insurance (LMI) is not your personal insurance on the house. LMI is insurance taken out by the lender to protect them against you defaulting on the loan. LMI is often required if you take out a mortgage that is more than 80 per cent of the value of the house. You will be charged LMI, which will bring your repayments up. Principal: The principal is the amount of your loan, without interest. RBA cash rate: The RBA cash rate is a monthly target that is set by the Reserve Bank of Australia. It provides a benchmark for Australian financial institutions, and reflects the inter-lender rate banks use to

borrow funds from other banks. The cash rate can be affected by national debt levels, employment rates and inflation. If the cash rate increases, your variable interest rate might also increase. Talk to Teresa Harrison today if you’d like more clarification about any of these terms, or to discuss how to move forward with your mortgage.

Living - History History set straight

Contributed by Elaine Reeves Glass House Mountains residents may have noticed that the plaque underneath the camphor laurel tree in Reed Street has been altered. The original plaque, erected by local historians in 1998, had some incorrect information on it and the ‘Friends of Bankfoot House’ undertook to rectify this inaccuracy. Thanks to a Minor Grant from the Sunshine Coast Council, a new plaque was ordered – with the correct information – and was installed last month. The Reed family lived in a house where the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern now stands, and the camphor laurel tree was planted in 1907 to commemorate the death of the first-born son of William Arthur Reed Snr and his wife Elizabeth Parry Reed (nee Roberts). In December 1906 young William Reed and his friend were out shooting with a pea rifle when William was accidentally shot. He was transferred to Brisbane by train and taken by ambulance to the Children’s Hospital, where he died soon after admission, on December 31, 1906. This event was reported in the Brisbane Courier on January 2, 1907. Young William was born in January 1899 and was not quite eight years of age when he died. This memorial camphor laurel tree, now over 100 years old, is mentioned as being of significance in Council’s Planning Scheme for Glass House Mountains. The photo shows the great-great-grandson of William and Elizabeth Reed checking out the plaque following its installation. Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council’s Minor Grants program, Narelle from Community Land Permits, Sunshine Coast Council, and the Council Cemeteries Team for enabling this project to reach a successful conclusion.

Do you have any historical photos of Landsborough?

Sunshine Coast Council is on the hunt for old photos of Landsborough to be included in a documentary about the town’s history. This documentary will explore the community stories, history and significant events of Landsborough, capture the historical significance of the township as told by locals, and will be used by the Landsborough Place Making project. Council is specifically looking for photos and memorabilia related to: • Landsborough Railway Refreshment Rooms between early 1900s until 1976. • Landsborough Post Office and Telegraph located at the Railway Station. • Watson’s flatbed truck that operated around Landsborough and Maleny from the 50s-70s that carted school children to sports at Glass House Mountains. • Landsborough school sports days prior to the 1970s held at Glass House Mountains. • The small council-owned hut that was rented around the 1950s located on the edge of the sports field on Old Gympie Road. Submissions close at 5pm on April 30. Submit your photos and contact details to council’s Cultural Heritage team at the Caloundra office or email culturalheritage@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Elected Representatives Andrew Wallace

Federal Member for Fisher Celebrating the Glass House Mountains

Last week I spent a day celebrating the Glass House Mountains with Ivon Northage and the wonderful volunteers at Celebrate Glasshouse Country. I began early by climbing Mt Ngungun with my dedicated team. It was such a refreshing way to start the day; I wish we could do it together all the time! Ivon then took us on a guided tour of the Mountains, where we heard all about their geology and history, the traditional stories that surround them and the best places to walk and climb. The volunteers of Celebrate Glasshouse Country do a fantastic job bringing the mountains to life and helping tourists and locals alike to understand and appreciate our unique landscape. Finally we visited Beerwah Library, where I supported Ivon in launching his new book, ‘The National Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains’. The Federal Government helped make the book a reality with a $10,000 grant, and the result is a wonderful one stop guide for anyone who wants to know more. I’d encourage everyone to head to the Glass House Mountains Information Centre and pick up a copy today.

State Member for Glass House World’s Greatest Shave produces a pink glitter beard!

Many of you may know that I recently participated in the World’s Greatest Shave to help raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation to support those facing blood cancers. The money goes towards research and to support families staying in accommodation close to the hospital while they or a loved one is undergoing treatment. I am proud to say that through your generosity I was able to raise $1,768 which will provide a family with 22 nights of accommodation. Thanks for your support! Whilst I did offer to shave my beard if more money was raised for that outcome, it appears more people wanted to see me colour my beard, so here is the result of what you voted for folks…

How to promote your business online

For small businesses today, especially in a regional area like ours, a great online presence can make a big difference to drawing customers in. We have all used our mobile phones or our computers to find a local shop or restaurant, or to plan a holiday. If a regional business in an important tourism area like ours is not online, it has often lost a potential customer before they even leave the house. That’s why I am trying to help every small business on the Sunshine Coast to excel online, to draw people in from outside our region and build the local economy. So I invited Google, the world’s online experts, to give a training presentation to local businesses on the Coast last week, partnering with Caloundra Chamber. 150 local business owners came along and learnt all about how to make the most of search engines and Google maps, and how to reach more people through their mobile phones. It was a fantastic session and everyone left with a lot to think about. If you run a small business and you want to learn more about how to succeed yourself on the internet, you can get some of the easy to use training materials Google presented by searching for ‘Google Digital Garage’ online. During the 2017 election campaign, Labor made several funding announcements around issues I have been fighting for, one of which was to construct a shared facility for the Maleny and District Rural Fire Brigade and the Maleny Auxiliary Fire and Rescue. I recently asked the Minister for Fire and Emergency Services a Question on Notice in relation to the project timeframes and completion date for the new facility. The Minister advised that the new facility is being included in the Forward Capital Works Program for QFES and further information wouldn’t be available until that program is endorsed. In layman’s terms this could mean that the project may not even be looked at for several years to come and the Minister is in no rush to deliver this important piece of infrastructure. Stay tuned for updates as I continue to hold Labor to account in regards to this and other funding promises in the Glass House electorate.

Rubbish presents worldwide challenges

I recently attended a meeting in Brisbane where the Metro Vancouver shared the strategies and goals for recyclables for their City. It is comforting to know that the whole world is grappling with ‘rubbish’. The Chinese decision not to receive recyclable materials for reprocessing has introduced another level of volatility to the industry both nationally and internationally. Initial impacts from this decision range from falling commodity prices to closure of international markets and a lot more in between. The Local Government Association of Queensland is investigating statewide solutions as this is not just a matter for the Sunshine Coast. Residents across the Sunshine Coast are encouraged to continue to recycle using the yellow top bins, recycle household goods where possible, reduce waste, reuse items and support recycled products. cowboy Scott Ward with 76 points in the senior (over 40s) bull ride. Before the Friday night event Ian said that he fell asleep on the couch after work the day before and had dreamt that he won the rodeo – so it looks like dreams do come true. Ian went on to compete in Brisbane last Saturday night in the novice bull riding event where he is competing against cowboys half his age. Unfortunately he bucked off a bull named Thriller this time. Ian is looking forward to his next senior competition at Dayboro next month. Photography by East Coast Images

Authentic Chinese cuisine at Mooloolah Back in November last year, new owners took over the Mooloolah Chinese Kitchen which they renovated to create a simple and comfortable place to come and enjoy a night out or to just stop in and grab some takeaway. For over 20 years, their family has been running Chinese cuisine restaurants across the Sunshine Coast at Maroochydore, Buderim, Cooroy, Pomona and Gympie. GC&M News spoke to their cook Shoaman Du. She said, "We always strive to provide high quality Chinese cuisine. We pride ourselves on our many years of experience in satisfying our customers. “Our menu has something for everyone and we like to cater to our customers’ individual tastes and requirements.

“Occasionally we also have specials to showcase different Chinese dishes that may not usually be found on a Chinese restaurant menu. We only use fresh and quality ingredients in our dishes to ensure our meals are both tasty and healthy. “If you are thinking about dining in, then make sure you drop in to the local bottle shop so you can BYO,” she said. "We would like to thank the local community for warmly welcoming us to Mooloolah Valley." They are looking forward to continuing to provide their customers with quality Chinese cuisine and appreciate the ongoing support from locals. They are open every day (except Monday) from 4pm, until 8pm on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and until 8.30pm on Friday and Saturday.

Exceed Real Estate was founded by Golden Webb in January 2015, after Golden spent 11 successful years at another thriving local residential agency. With a large portfolio of listings and clients throughout the Hinterland region, Golden has led a growing and successful agency, which has sold more than 100 properties since opening its doors and over $15.1 million worth of property last calendar year. Last month, Golden won her third title of Rate My Agent’s ‘Agent of the Year’ in Mooloolah Valley. Golden has built her company and her reputation on ethics and experience. Exceed is a major sponsor for the key fundraising events held on the annual Mooloolah calendar, as well as the public school.

…. a message from Golden …

Mooloolah Valley is a beautiful area where people from all over Australia have come to live a quality rural feel lifestyle while still being close to everything. We have found the people coming into Mooloolah have changed from major areas outside of Queensland, to selling to Queenslanders and local people from the Coast. This is because of the lifestyle this town has to offer. All amenities, shops, doctors and a great community vibe. There’s the local primary school, daycare centre and kindergarten for the families and lots of great things for the retirees. Ewen Maddock Dam offers summer and winter fun while Dularcha National Park and all the forestry areas offer the fitness enthusiast a great environment to walk, hike, bike ride and of course we have horses and the wonderful pony club.

Mooloolah Valley Country Club is hosting a special fundraiser evening for 18-month old local lad Jackson Hislop who has Quadriplegic Dystonic Cerebral Palsy. The community is rallying behind the event, billed as ‘A Night for Captain Jack’, this Saturday, April 21, at 6pm with an aim to raise funds for a transport wheelchair van. Tickets are $25 which includes a night of live music, great food, lucky envelope draws, a glass of wine, beer or soft drink on entry, with nibbles and delicious spit roast sliders. There will also be an auction on the night with some fabulous items available including a stunning green emerald and pearl bracelet and earing set from The Jewellers Bench at Landsborough, a mountain bike donated by Cycle Zone Mooloolaba, and Evolution Espresso at Chancellor Park will provide a coffee every single day for an entire year to one lucky bidder. Tickets are on sale at Mooloolah Meats, Ray White Sippy Downs and Mooloolah Valley Country Club. This is an 18+ event. For more details, visit the Facebook event page, ‘A Night for Captain Jack’. This special event is all about fundraising for two-year-old Jackson, who lives with his mum and dad at Mooloolah. Jack has had an eventful and nerve wracking start to life so far, he is the surviving twin born 15 weeks early and having a 132 day stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Jack’s mum Kristy Lea Hislop explained that she and Jack are out and about most days as it's what Jack enjoys most. His latest favourite is to go to the aquarium and people watch. Kristy said she would hate to get to the point where they are staying home because it's too

hard for them to go out. However, as Jack has Quadriplegic Dystonic Cerebral Palsy and Kristy finds it really difficult to load Jack’s special 39kg chair into the car, along with the challenges of lifting Jack into the car, particularly on a bad day, when the Cerebal Palsy causes the muscles in his body to spasm, the family have decided it's time to move to a wheelchair vehicle for everyone’s safety. Meanwhile Kristy has found an economical option, the family just can’t afford the vehicle without assistance. The event to be held at the Country Club on Saturday night will be a great support in getting the funds required and they have also set up a Go Fund Me page where you can contribute. Just go to www.gofundme.com/ wheelsforcaptainjack. Kristy is really proud that Jack doesn’t let CP hold him back from enjoying a full and happy life though, describing Jack as the absolute light of their lives and as a cheeky little character! "We are so proud of Jack and it's clear his gorgeous personality has won many hearts, when you look at the huge outpouring of support we have received from the community," she said. “We really appreciate every bit of support we have received so far. "We are truly overwhelmed by the amount of support the community have shown us. We are running out of ways to say thank you!

Mooloolah Valley Country Club

Have you been driving past the old Mooloolah Valley Country Club and wondering what it’s like these days? Well, if last Thursday night is anything to go by; it is definitely the place to be for locals. We called in on our way home from work so thought we would sneak in early, but there were already plenty of cars in the car park when we arrived at 6.15pm and the crowd continued to grow. Once we were inside we headed straight up to the bar to order and it wasn’t long before our meals came out. I went for the steak and Brownie opted for a creamy bowl of pasta, which got our seal of approval and the size of the meals definitely put paid to any ideas of fitting in dessert. They are open every day from 10am-10pm, so make sure you call in and check it out for yourself. Located at 129 Connection Road, Glenview. 18

Health &Wellbeing Uplift your energy at Mist n Dreams After 15 years working in a collective business environment, Anne Pickering has rebranded her shop space in Landsborough to Mist n Dreams. The new name heralds a transformation of Anne’s business to better incorporate her massage and therapy work with an expanded spiritual giftware line and a greater focus on locally made products. Anne said she was keen to provide an inviting space that appeals to both her more mainstream clients who regularly come in for remedial massage and those that may be seeking more alternative therapies and products. “With Mist n Dreams I want to offer a service for everyone that will provide what they need to nourish and cherish themselves,” Anne said. “Along with remedial massage, we offer Reiki, Bush Flower Consults and even Crystal Card Intuitive Consults. “We also have a huge range of products to help

uplift and enhance your home environment from crystals to Feng Shui products, locally made organic skincare to beautiful handmade body care products.” The shop is currently being managed as a family business. When Anne is out the back providing massage treatments, she has either her sister, or son or daughter helping with customers out front. With her wealth of product knowledge, especially in regards to crystals and holistic wellbeing products, Anne is hoping to spend more time with customers out front as the business evolves. As the business continues to transform, Anne looks forward to also offering a space to allow small events to take place that will complement her goal to provide a holistic service outlet for the community. Mist n Dreams is located at Shop 4/1 Maleny Road, Landsborough. Phone 5494 1244.

Local bat ecologist and author Les Hall will be at the event, which will also feature a Geckoes Wildlife native wildlife presentation and an outdoor cinema screening of ‘Rise of the Guardians’. Bring along a blanket, torch, and a picnic (or purchased a barbeque dinner) and relax under the stars while watching the local flying fox colony ‘fly out’. Being a family friendly event there will be a ‘Bat Cave’ for kids’ activities and kids are encouraged to dress in their favourite batty costumes. The event is free to attend, however bookings are essential via Sunshine Coast Council’s website or email naturalareas@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Visages, Villages (Faces, Places), a 2017 French documentary about a road trip involving an unlikely pair – legendary French director Agnes Varda and photographer and muralist 'JR’ – will be shown by the Maleny Film Society this Saturday night. What's unusual is that Varda is 89 years old with failing vision and her companion is 33. The pair travel through the French countryside in a van painted to look like a giant camera which is well stocked with photographic equipment. Meeting ordinary people going about their daily lives, they create massive portraits which are then displayed on the walls of relevant local buildings. The interaction between Varda and 'JR' has been variously described as warm and witty, deeply moving, life-affirming and having the power to celebrate community. David Sims in The Atlantic even went so far as to label it "a one-in-a-million crowd pleaser that deserves to be seen by as many people as possible." Varda explains her role: "To meet new faces, and photograph them, so that they don't fall down the holes in my memory." This joyful film may have us all looking at the faces and places we encounter through new eyes, thus creating lasting memories. When: Saturday April 21 Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple Street Food and Drinks: Dinner from 6pm-7pm catered by Wild Rocket, tea/coffee and homemade slices stand, and drinks available from the bar Movie: Screens from 7.15pm Cost: $13 adults (non-members), $8 members and students with ID, and children under 16 are $5. In the Garden Wild Child Gardens Workshop

Discover how to bring out your inner child in your own garden, inspiring endless opportunities for imaginative nature play for your children or grandchildren. This hands-on practical and lively workshop is for adults who’d like to transform their garden or child-care place to include natural play. Peachester State School is excited to be hosting the upcoming Wild Child Gardens Workshop on May 19. This is a wonderful learning opportunity that anyone with kids can benefit from. You will need to book for this workshop by contacting Tamsin Scott from Earth Play on 0481 066 789 or tamsinscott0@gmail.com. Cost is $125 (concession $100), and spaces are limited – so book early. It’s on at Peachester State School, 9.30am-4.30pm on Saturday May 19. Tamsin Scott is a landscape architect with 25 years experience. She has a passion for designing sensory outdoor spaces. Tamsin will guide you through exploration of nature play principles, the design process, spaces and materials that will ignite creative play. She’ll help you create a beautiful new garden vision that will bring creativity to fruition and will encourage children to be engaged in the type of unstructured outdoor play that we remember from our own childhoods. The size of your garden is irrelevant – in fact Tamsin’s passion is to encourage opportunities for nature play in the smallest of gardens. This is great news for everyone who has a small yard in our growing community.

Feeling a bit shady With Spencer and Karen Shaw

This moist weather is great for lush greenery and a superb time for planting ferns, palms, gingers and just about anything else really! In our shade house at Forest Heart at the moment we have a great range of ferns ranging in size from the king of them all, the King Fern Angiopteris evecta, with fronds up to five metres in length, through to the delicate but vibrant pale green of the Maiden Hair Fern. New in stock we have the Australian Crepe Ginger Costus speciosus, a spectacular flowering ginger relative from North Queensland with red and white flowers. We’ve got some spectacular Crow’s Nest Ferns in 300mm pots that are awesome foliage statements. In palms we have Piccabeen Palm, Cabbage Tree Palm and Walking Stick Palm; the latter are the smallest of our local palms, great in the shade or as an indoor specimen. The Bolwarra, one of our native guavas, is looking huge at over 1.5m high in 200mm pots and ready to make an instant impact. An unusual little local flowering plant we have for shady spots is the White Brunoniella, with its dark green foliage and delicate white flowers. Forest Heart EcoNursery is closed April 17 to April 20 for a quick holiday, but see you soon to check out all these great plants and so many more.

Sustainable nursery practices

By River School Students, Rhys Martin, Spirit Love, Mali Judah, Chloe Mead and Seb Goulton We all know that planting trees is great for the environment, however you might be surprised to find out that the Forest Heart Nursery has provided more for the environment than you might think. The River School Red Cedars (Year 6) of 2018 decided to investigate the nursery’s sustainable practices. We had very high expectations and the Forest Heart Nursery did not disappoint! This nursery stocks a range of organic products including compost, fertilisers and mulch. They have an extensive range of plants including beautiful natives and bush tucker plants. The owner, Karen Shaw, is very knowledgeable about the plants at her nursery and gave us great advice about how to create our sustainable and edible gardens. We learnt so much about how to create beautiful gardens and we are happy to report they are doing great. We are really looking forward to harvesting and eating from our gardens in the future. We highly recommend a visit to Forest Heart Nursery for anyone interested in organic, sustainable gardening. Our challenge then is for everyone to try to use all natural and organic products in their gardens. This is a win-win situation, as it is great for the environment and great for you. We would like to encourage everyone to grow vegies and bush tucker foods because at this point in time, our planet needs as much help as it can get! Karen Shaw from Forest Heart Nursery shares her knowledge about bush food plants

GMAN Autumn Plant Sale

From the churches The Commonwealth Games are now over and the athletes and teams are heading home. The school holidays are over and teachers and students have returned to school. It seems we are constantly living in a world that moves from one thing to the next. We just put the Christmas Trees away and the Hot Cross Buns are on the shelves. We eat all the Easter eggs and we see advertisements for Mother’s Day. It seems we are constantly living in the moment and waiting for the next exciting thing to appear. Our lives are full with events and this is without even thinking about our daily lives. Parents driving children to and from school and then from one sport training session to another, then to a music lesson, then to a play date and somewhere homework, eating and sleeping take place. Holidays for some are action packed, going from this activity to another, to visiting this family or friend, travelling to an exotic place. When do we get to stop? Bunches of Blessings

A group of ladies from the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church has started a new initiative in preparing flower arrangements and delivering them to local nursing homes and retirement villages as well as elderly and shutin members of the community. Church member Jess said that flowers are a great way of showing people that they are special. Bunches of flowers were recently delivered to the residents of Glasshouse Views Retirement Village at Beerwah. If you would like to support that initiative, please contact 0407 101 485 for more details. Glasshouse Country (Legacy) Laurel Club will not be holding a meeting on April 25 as it is Anzac Day and members will be attending services in different areas. to regroup? When do we pause to reflect on life? Psalm 46 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” To ‘be still’ means to cease frantic activity, to pause, to stop, to rest. When we are still, we watch life (nature and humanity) going on around us, bringing us into a fresh perspective of what is important. When we are still we can question our motives, our desires, our decisions and the consequences of our decisions, our hopes and dreams and ask whether we are self-focused at the expense of others. When we are still we can know God, surrender to God, where we find peace, contentment, strength, clarity and renewed hope for the coming hour and days. In your busyness, may you find even five minutes from the frantic demands of life and be still and know that “God is your refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1.

Sport Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday April 9: Ladies jackpot, only eight teams trying for that elusive $600 Jackpot. Winners of the day with the most ends won (16) were Dennis Hume, Jack Timm and Di Hume. Runners up with 12 ends won were John Aitken, Greg Gault and David Wiley. Mystery prize went to Dick Coppa, Noelene and John Annakin. Jackpot number drawn was -7, again no winners so still $600 up for grabs next month. Get your teams in early for May’s Jackpot. The Summer season of Business Bowls was finally completed, well done to Norm Pringle, and his sons Jarryd and Hayden who won the season. We’re taking nominations now for the Spring Season starting in October. Thanks again to Terry, Liz and Bill for their hard work. Thursday April 10: Social winners of the day on countback with 16 ends and 2 wins + 76 were Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson. Runners up with the highest score in either game with 44 were Joe and Ross Siegle. Lucky draw went to Darcy Wilson and Vic Muscat. Leading up to pennant season we will be playing some 21 end games as well as a game or two of fours. Saturday April 12: Men’s Club Championship Pairs, Semis 9am, saw Dean Shaw and Graham Richardson 30 def Don Tierney (sub) and Graham Nicholson 30-7. Terry Little and Barry Kirk def Dick Coppa and Simon Richter 28-15. Final 1pm, some brilliant bowls were played in the final with a number of members watching on. In the end Terry Little and Barry Kirk were too strong, beating Dean Shaw and Graham Richardson 25-16. Well done to all players. Remember the men’s fours start this Saturday. The Monday Monthly 2 Bowl Triples starts this week then it’s every 4th Monday of the month after that. Start time is 10.30am with lunch included for the cost of $15 each. Usually a fun and chilled day with teams from others clubs visiting. Hope you all get behind and support it. Get your teams together now. So far we have 8 confirmed. Remember we are taking orders for our new jacket. Glasshouse Gliders, they look great! They don’t have to be worn for just bowls. We have about 10 orders so far, we need another 10 so we can place an order. Finally either last Wednesday or Thursday we lost another of our new Henselite Jacks which have only just been replaced. One of you has to have it, so please take a look in your bags. It’s a brand new jack with a Henselite green jack logo on it.

Beerwah Golf Club Men and Medley Results Contributed by Roger Bonhomme The big news from last Wednesday's medley Stableford game was captain Andrew Wills' decision to divide Division 3 into two sections in future thus forming a fourth grade. For many weeks our midweek competition has been attracting a large number of long markers. On Wednesday we had 79 with 25 and 51 in Divisions 1 and 2 respectively. Division 1 was taken out by Charlie Bevan (hcp 6) with a solid 39 points. Kev Hickman, (11), soon to pack up his clubs for a round Australia trip, finished second on 37. Keith Musgrave (16) took out Division 2 with an excellent 42 points, two ahead of Eric Bryson (15). In Division 3 three players finished tied on 37. Mat Del Forno (26) took the countback from Christine McGrory (40). Steve Briggs, unfortunately, missed out. NTP: 2 – Zane Mylrea, 5 – Allan Smerdon, 16 – Wayne Lewis, 18 – Pete Kiraly. Saturday's individual par event brought in some

amazing results with two divisional winners repeating their class wins from last Wednesday, one of them with a sky high score. When the dust settled, pennant player Craig Farr (3) came in with a gross sub-par result of +4 to win Division 1. He pipped Jim Wells (8) by a shot. In Division 2, Keith Musgrave (15) also shot +4, to win for the second consecutive game. Five players finished second on +3. Peachester State School students have had a fantastic start to the year in the sporting arena, with a number of our students heading off to the District Swimming Carnival. Superfish Emma and Sam swam their way right though to Regionals and finally to the Queensland School State Swimming Championships. After three days of competition and PBs, they both did our school proud with their amazing efforts. Emma and Sam only started swimming competitively last year and have worked hard for this deserved achievement.

Emma and Sam Eadie and Addison This term also saw two of our netballers, Addison and Eadie, gaining places in the U11 and U12 District Netball teams. The girls will compete at the Regional Trials early next term. Good luck to them both. And finally, over the past few weeks our Year 5 and 6 students took part in the Interschool Softball competition at Glass House. Both the boys and girls showed outstanding sportsmanship and effort, resulting in an overall third place for the girls. Congratulations to everyone that participated and to all our sporting superstars!

Peachester Girls Softball Team

Contributed by Graeme Glover Bowls has been getting some very positive exposure with the Australian Team winning many medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. It was a great spectacle on television enjoyed by many. This has highlighted the broad appeal of our game. The weather has been kind to us at Maleny over the last week. Thanks to those players who enjoyed a game on Tuesday at the club. A good number of regulars were away on Wednesday evening but we still were able to get some great games enjoyed by a number of bowlers returning from holidays. If you would like a game contact Miles Allen at MBC and he will guarantee you a game. Be at the club at 6pm for 6.30 and enjoy the best night’s fun in Maleny. Friday Scroungers saw 18 players contest this event at the club. The closeness of many of the games was certainly a highlight of the afternoon. Members have the opportunity to nominate at the club or online for the start of the club championships. Members are reminded to take the opportunity to come and have a rollup while the bar is open during the week. Hope to see you on the green or in the club. Keep rolling up, the club benefits from your active participation in any of our activities at the club.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker The Bray Shield team, Sarah Widin (Captain), Frances Harper, and Ted Gardner played a Caloundra team, Howard Williams and Don Helmrich, at Caloundra. They were beaten convincingly. Sara lost 4-26 to Howard, Frances lost 7-19 to Don and Ted and Sarah were beaten 8-20 in the doubles. Caloundra won the match 3 games to none. Players should take heart from the fact that it is early days in the season and success is often just around the corner. Sunday had Donna Manning, Garth, Kath Smith, Ken Barker, Nick Cram and Sally Adams playing. Nick went down to Ken 9-16. A truncated game with Garth and Donna moving to lawn 2 to coach some children and their parents, left Kath and Sally to do battle. Kath got up 10-5. It was a very pleasant afternoon and heart-warming to hear the laughter of children on the lawn. The Lochwood Shield team, Donna, Nick and Ken played away in Caloundra on Wednesday. Donna played Sue Bertram and managed to get to four back early. Sue fought back, but with only a little time to play bravely pegged one of Donna’s balls out. This left only 3 balls on the lawn but none for Donna to partner up with. Nonetheless, Donna pegged out the other to win 26-16; unfortunate for Sue but good for Maleny. Ken played Mike Bertram and with the advantage of 3 bisques also managed 4 back but then squandered chances and let Mike back in. The last two turns either player could have won. Nervous errors occurred. Ken was lucky to get up 16-13. The doubles went to Caloundra 26-12. Mike and Helen Matchett played well. Helen made early breaks with good play and went to the peg. Nick Cram fought back getting his ball to four back but Mike, in a return to form, tidied up and pegged out. Honours to Maleny however, with a win overall 2 games to 1. Kath, finally free of her moon boot, 5 beat Helen Andrews and Bev 4. Donna and Frances played Ken until afternoon tea when he left the red and yellow balls to be managed by Donna. Somehow a promising lead ended up as an 8 all draw. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. Just for Laughs A truck driver stopped at a roadside diner for lunch and ordered a cheeseburger, coffee and a slice of apple pie. As he was about to eat, three bikers walked in. One grabbed the trucker's cheeseburger and took a huge bite from it. The second one drank the trucker's coffee, and the third wolfed down his apple pie. The truck driver didn't say a word as he paid the

ARIES March 21 - April 20 Your sign has just had the New Moon influence which can be likened to a starterpistol that signals your race is about to begin! Of course the change is up to you and you are feeling independent. The urge for new experiences is compelling; pursue them in a positive way. Career progress slows down while Saturn goes retrograde. TAURUS April 21 - May 21 With Mercury going direct, at last all your private worries bring a chance for awareness and improvement. There are some pent up feelings that burst through for expression, or better than that, something exciting in private opens up many doors to a new awareness. The weekend sees Pluto retrograding so there is need for reformation. GEMINI May 22 - June 21 There is a very welcome Venus-Jupiter contact that can cause your social contacts to multiply! If you are having invitations get involved. You are up for a fun and group involvement now that Mercury has gone direct. With Saturn going retrograde together with Pluto, your main focus will turn to strategy. Avoid heated emotions or ignorance. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Feelings are running deep now in a relationship, making you crave more intimacy. However, Saturn retrograde brings a stall and recoil of memories in your relationship zone. There are wildcard unexpected moves in your business or personal world. Someone around you cries out for their need to make a statement of independence.

LEO July 23 - August 23 From the 19th the Sun enters the sign of Taurus for a one month stay. This may launch a new career cycle for you and better still, it is a time to assess where you have been and where you would like to go! What is it that you would really like to achieve, acquire and accomplish? The weekend sees you inspired ready to take a huge chance. VIRGO August 24 - September 23 From the 15th the New Moon came through the sign of Aries, and also moved direct. This is going to help your shared resources with your partner and emotional intimacy. Mid-week the Taurus Moon sets your mind off on foreign adventures. The weekend has Pluto retrograding, telling you that a major reform is under way. Good inner promptings. LIBRA September 24 - October 23 With Saturn and Pluto in retrograde motion there are restrictions and possible events relating to people in hospital or at funerals. In view of current responsibilities and pressures an unexpected event can have you envisioning an escape plan. Any temporary change would do you good. Check to see all your travel insurance coverage is adequate. SCORPIO October 24 - November 22 Now that the New Moon has gone direct this is a ‘go’ sign for previous stalled work or health matters. A new enthusiasm now pays off for new everyday routines. Stick to stability when analysing your career as, under Saturn retrograde, there is a reserved, introspective mindset. The weekend has an interesting mix of energies, some curiously intellectual!

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21 Just as you think a green light comes up and your new chance comes fast, be aware that Saturn and Pluto are retrograde in the very slow ‘reality’ sign of Capricorn. All this points to you not being very appreciative if someone voices a forceful opinion or the taxation office does not agree with you. Any misunderstandings require realistic double checking. CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20 The next few weeks provide you with drive, but in a grounded and practical way which resonates well. Relationships provide deep feelings and passions. Business, although still small, gradually becomes prosperous. A change of direction at home is likely as partners become emotional and sensitive. Do not relay any old wounded defences. AQUARIUS January 21 - February 18 New ideas come boldly into consciousness at a very fast pace. There is a need to learn from the past, probably over the last seven years, as Saturn now moves retrograde, together with the reforming planet Pluto. The weekend sees discussions to fill in gaps in your life with hopes and suggestions. Be alert for danger over the weekend, so no speeding! PISCES February 19 - March 20 Mercury is moving direct and this is good news for you financially. Any stalled money matters start to move faster this month. Saturn in retrograde brings a social reassessment, so some old friends are falling away from you now. Pleasant news comes regarding a surprising purchase with a technical-related eccentric value. Your weekend is most pleasing.
