he cover story this week is a great story about Mt Mellum local Misty Bland and her determination to do something positive to help raise awareness of rare cancers. These days all things ‘vintage’ is so popular that Misty and her friends have embarked on a project to produce a fundraising calendar using the vintage theme. And while this isn’t the first time I have heard of, or even been involved with a calendar fundraiser, what I love is how those creating them come up with something unique, quirky and embrace things that they like or inspire them. So last week when I heard that ‘Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy’ who are based at Glass House Mountains (story page 6) were thinking about doing a calendar girls style ‘knitting calendar’, it gave me a smile wondering how they might strategically place their knitted scarves and beanies! GC&M News is seeking readers' help to find the mystery owner of an Australian Commonwealth Military Forces badge recently discovered in the Glass House Mountains area. Amanda Smyth from Wild Horse Turf was walking through forestry behind her property when she made the surprise discovery. "After doing some research on the Australian Defence Force website I believe it may be a Rising Sun Badge from a slouch hat," Amanda said. The Rising Sun Badge appears to have been the third version of the badge (in use from 1904 to 1949) and was proudly worn by soldiers in both World Wars. It was worn on the upside of the slouch hat and became an integral part of the ANZAC tradition. "I think it could have been stolen and discarded in the forest as it seems an odd place for it to be found," Amanda said. "It must be an important part of someone's life and I would like to find the owner or their family." Amanda intends to donate the badge to the Glasshouse Country RSL should the owner or his family not be found. The ‘Vintage’ girls fight for a cause Misty Bland may be fighting for her husband’s life, however she is also venturing to go where very few women dare to go...producing a calendar entitled ‘Vintage Calendar Girls’. Misty’s husband Rob developed a rare cancer strain, Chordoma, four years ago and as a result, was inspired to raise awareness of the disease and funds to set up a national support group. After an initial misdiagnosis, Rob and Misty received the devastating news, and both were left feeling devastated and isolated. “We joined an online support group in America and from there connected with other overseas patients, gathering vital information about his deadly cancer,” said Misty, who resides at Mt Mellum. “Our treatment options have been limited as the tumour is now dangerously close to his aorta. “There are very few people in Australia with this type of cancer and there is only one surgeon in Australia who has the knowledge to operate and that is Dr Charlie Teo.” Misty admitted she has struggled to come to terms with her husband’s diagnosis. “For months I have withdrawn from my normal life, inwardly mourning for my husband’s condition and feeling helpless, however my friends at Maximise Fitness have supported and encouraged me to seek something greater from this tragedy. “I have found my inner strength and drive to succeed with the calendar campaign to ‘fight for Rob’s life’.
Aileen Jackson will be one of the models “We envisage our calendar will be tasteful and classy with a risqué edge that will surprise everyone, with natural and real women willing to step up to the challenge to support this cause.” The calendar will be launched on September 19 at the Maleny RSL with all funds raised aiding Rare Cancers Australia, “to assist others with the pain we have experienced,” said Misty. A number of high profile sponsors have come on board including Jacinta Richmond, CEO of the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival, who has obtained make-up artists, stylists and fashion designers to assist with the photo shoots. However Misty and her team of supporters are seeking further sponsors to support their fundraising venture, from local businesses to printers and t-shirt suppliers. “If local businesses are willing to give a commitment to sell 20 of the calendars in their stores we will offer them free advertising in the calendar. Current interchange plans unacceptable The Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has called for an appropriate solution to the issues surrounding the upgrade of the Bruce Highway and Caloundra Interchange development, including the exclusion of a direct link from the highway to the Aussie World commercial precinct. “Of course there must be a long term upgrade to the Caloundra interchange, but with minimum impact to the Beerwah State Forest and economic fallout to businesses that operate at Aussie World,” Mr McArdle said. “The scale of the roundabout publically proposed for the interchange at Caloundra and the Bruce Highway, as I have said, is too large with too many unanswered questions. “The current design should not be implemented. To prevent large scale damage to the Beerwah Forest, the proposed design must have a smaller footprint. “The upgrade of the interchange is important to residents as the growth in future traffic movements must be accommodated, however other issues must also be dealt with. “Access to Aussie World is proposed to be by way of a small roundabout which itself is problematic. Instead of a direct route motorists will need to go backwards to go forwards. “Further, community support must continue. Without feedback from the community, large developments such as these are able to go

ahead regardless of the negative impact they may have on our environment and businesses.” Aussie World Garage owner Steve Amos is furious. “The proposed closure of the on and off ramps from the highway directly into the Aussie World complex is unacceptable,” he said. “The local independent businesses here were developed and grown with the knowledge that the passing highway traffic has direct access into and out of the area. “Just from our perspective at the Aussie World Garage, we are the only independent petrol station on the Bruce Highway between Brisbane and Gympie. We can provide local residents, local tradies and local businesses with very competitive prices because of the volume through-put we have coming directly off the highway. “Closing off our on and off ramps will reduce our trade and mean that we can’t discount our fuel as much. Who loses out … locals residents, tradies and businesses that we support,” he said. Mr Amos has been collecting signatures against the closure of the accesses into the Aussie World complex, and has amassed over 3,000 supporters who have signed the petition. No one could accuse Karen and Peter Croke of not having charitable hearts. Ten years ago the Glass House residents decided to help Brisbane's less fortunate and founded Knitting for Brisbane's Needy. Since then the charity has gone nationwide and global, with the group having aided victims of the Victorian bushfires and Christchurch earthquake, and the military serving in Afghanistan. With no funding from official sources, Karen and Peter have had to rely on the donation of knitted items. "During the nine years of our group's operation, we have given out over 220,000 items to the homeless, less fortunate, domestic violence shelters, oncology wards, nursing homes and wildlife shelters," Karen said. "There are more than 50 items we distribute including beanies, scarves, gloves, blankets, jumpers for all ages, and chemo beanies for chemo patients. "We have now branched out to also include hygiene packs for the homeless and DV shelters," she said. Knitting for Brisbane's Needy is operated out of pensioners Karen and Peter's home at their own expense. However late last year, Maleny business owner Scott Alexander from Mountainview Daylillies generously decided to donate a Titan shed which is installed in Karen and Peter's back yard. Scott, who also supports other local causes such as the Maleny Golf Club and Maleny Botanical Gardens, will officially open the Knitting for Brisbane's Needy shed with a small morning tea

Law catches up with Deborah Bell Back in May 2014, GC&M News reported that a group of irate locals rallied outside the doors of the ‘Garage Sale Centre’ business in Beerwah, after the business owner – Deborah (Debbie) Bell – was evicted for non-payment of rent for the premises. What came to light was a litany of alleged misdemeanours and misconducts perpetrated against many local residents and businesses by Mrs Bell, resulting in an investigation by the Office of Fair Trading. Last week, Mrs Bell was fined a total of $11,000 in the Caloundra Magistrates Court after charges were brought by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) for trading without a licence and failing to supply goods (a mattress) paid for by a consumer. Deborah Maureen Rosina Bell was found guilty of one count of trading unlicensed as a secondhand dealer and one count of failing to supply goods. Ms Bell failed to appear in court and the matter was heard in her absence. The court ordered Ms Bell to pay a $10,000 fine for accepting payment and failing to supply the mattress, plus $1,000 in restitution to the consumer. Ms Bell was also fined $1,000 for trading as an unlicensed second-hand dealer. Fair Trading Executive Director Brian Bauer said consumers should only deal with licensed second-hand dealers and pawnbrokers. “Second-hand dealers and pawnbrokers must undergo a criminal history check before they get a licence to trade,” Mr Bauer said.

Bizarrely, Mrs Bell was recently featured in an article in the Bundaberg News-Mail newspaper, where she claimed that she has been travelling Australia searching for her estranged father after being taken to New Zealand by her mother nearly 50 years ago.

Paramedic work appeals to musician Talented musician Kaylee Utting of Beerwah is so impressed by the daily tempo of frontline emergency work that she has signed up to study Paramedic Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Kaylee, 18, who achieved an OP2 at Glasshouse Country Christian College last year, said she had been interested in the work of paramedics for many years and was inspired by their knowledge of the human body. “I knew I wanted to be able to help people and one of the best ways I could do that was by choosing to study to become a paramedic,” she said. “I have a friend who is in her third year of Paramedic Science at USC and she can tell you every ligament and bone in your hand – that's really cool and such an inspiration.” The opportunity to calmly assist people in emergencies and the ever-changing work environment are two aspects of the job that Kaylee finds most appealing. “I think any sort of medical background comes in handy and I'm really excited to learn about how the human body works so that I can help injured people when they really need it,” she said. Kaylee excelled in biology at school and was also an active member of her school band, playing the guitar, piano and drums. She intends to add further strings to her bow in the future – both academically and musically – with plans to one day study medicine and master the cello.

Christmas care continues on the Range Contributed by Murray Robertson The care and compassion so widely evident at Christmas is set to continue well into 2015 following the highly successful Christmas Tree Festival. Hosted by the Maleny Uniting Church, the third festival attracted over 600 visitors, in the week before Christmas.
Murray Robertson, Rev Catherine Solomon, Ann Koenig, and Thea Caffin This year, the Festival partnered with the Blackall Range Care Group which provides a wide range of client based services across the Blackall Range community. Fundraising from donations and sale of trees meant that the Festival was able to present a cheque for $1,500.00 to the BRCG. This is the largest amount raised since the first festival in 2012. It just keeps growing. Thea Caffin, CEO of the BRCG, and Ann Koenig, President of the Management Committee were both delighted with all aspects of the festival. Volunteers and clients had fun building their ‘Aussie Jingle Bells’ Tree, complete with the thunder box. Many clients and families also enjoyed a visit to the festival. Thea said that the donation will be used to fit out a storage space with shelving and lining, in the Maleny office behind the Maleny Hospital. Thea added that the BRCG continues to expand, especially in the Maleny area where 60% of the 900 clients are now living. The donation will enable staff and volunteers to continue to provide this valuable service in the Maleny area.

Contributed by Judith Mason The Glasshouse Country View Club has a new venue for our monthly lunch meetings, the Beerwah Hideaway on Steve Irwin Way. They are able to accommodate us with a light airy room, and buffet style lunch with a choice of three main and three sweet courses, and there is plenty of parking just inside the main gate, on the left hand side. On Wednesday, February 4 we had our outing to Caloundra RSL where 20 plus of us enjoyed coffee, cake and Elton John’s music and songs. Beerwah Lions Clubs latest Roarings Contributed by Una Robinson Thanks to the community for the aluminum cans received the first Saturday of each month, 188kgs were sent off for February. Beerwah Lions cans project commenced 1987- 88 and large kilos of cans have been received over the years. This project promotes clean up Glass House Country while earning Lions community funds which are distributed to the needy projects. Lions John and Lottie Nisbett with Lion Pat Jutila have been out and about visiting those business establishments that sold Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings to say a big thank you and present a certificate of gratitude. Like the recycled cans, all profits from cake sales go back to the community. The last dinner meeting saw our own club member Lion Bronwyn Bossley as guest speaker, her subject, Body Stress Release. Her attentive audience learnt that this alternative impressive healing modality commenced in 1980 in South Africa where she underwent training. Bronwyn may be contacted through Beerwah Lions. Coming up on Wednesday, February 25 is the annual Lions Youth of the year youth event. There could be up to six participants competing with the winner proceeding to Zone, Regional, District, State and possibly Australia wide finals, valuable prizes in trips etc are available too. What a proud event this is to witness these young future leaders in our area address some deep and serious subjects. Thankfully long gone are the days of young people being seen and not heard. After working for many years locally at a health food shop, Kaz saw the need in Beerwah for a dedicated acupuncturist, so when circumstances dictated a new direction, she embraced this vision wholeheartedly. The shop she is in became available and along with her husband Matt, Kaz totally focussed on the opportunity to set up her business. It all came together and felt right. So with very little capital but with loads of vision and belief, Kaz and Matt embarked on a labour of love to set up the business - painted, fitted out and ready go all within an amazing three days! Kaz has always been totally client focussed and her unwavering belief in the need to set up her business allowed her to never question the need for Soulqi. Now celebrating a year of business she is very grateful to the people of Beerwah (and surrounds) in showing their support.
What challenges have you faced? Putting on an additional acupuncturist was a challenge for Kaz - but in a good way. Having another acupuncturist two days a week taught her to ‘let go’ and step back from the business she is totally passionate about. Happily, her trust proved to be an excellent choice. What are the positives of having your own business? Being her own boss and being able to truly bring all aspects of herself to her work with her clients. Also working closely with her team of like minded wellness practitioners has been wonderful. Finally being able to offer gentle Japanese acupuncture to locals and allowing people to take time out for themselves, as well as offering effective treatment plans, children’s wellness, fertility support and overall well being support to those in the local community has been immensely rewarding.

School News Young history is celebrated By Sandy Johnson On Monday, February 9, Glasshouse Country Christian College held its whole of college dedication service. The event has become an important tradition in the school life and all 925 students and most of the 140 staff gathered in the large undercover area for the occasion. Young Prep students’ eyes opened wide as they saw the hundreds of older students assembled behind them. The event was celebrated with singing and prayers for the students, their families and the staff. This year there were two special guest speakers. Ross Newell spoke about the history of GCCC as his family have been part of the college since before Glasshouse Country Baptist Church purchased the land. Mr Newell talked about the endless working bees clearing the land with trees so stubborn that tractors couldn’t budge them. Some of the trees were recycled to make
Leaders presentation the very first classrooms which have since been transformed into offices and main reception. Students were surprised to learn that the whole campus was one big swamp and a lot of time and thought had to go into drainage before building could even take place. Mr Newell spoke of the great atmosphere at the working bees and how everyone chipped in giving up all their weekends and spare time to realise the vision of a Christian school in Beerwah. Sarah Davis was also a guest speaker at the service. Sarah was the GCCC College Captain in 2012 when she graduated with an OP1. Sarah is also a foundation student and features in a little black and white photo of 15 students taken on the first day of school 15 years ago. Sarah spoke with fondness of her time at GCCC, her memories of friendships, and how her education prepared her for life and university. Sarah could even recall a time when finding a car park at 3.00pm was easy!

The two school captains Rosie Hodgens and Jacob Barbeler and four house captains took their pledge to office and were presented with their badges. Stanley House: Larah Hammond and Dain Milosavljevic, Coochin House: Ella Hunn and Mitchell Jennings. A celebratory cake and morning tea was held after the official ceremony for the family and friends of the recipients. Many school parents and community members attended the presentation to acknowledge and congratulate the students on their achievement of office having proved themselves worthy of such a high level of responsibility.

Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra P: 5491 2780 I am reading a publication by the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) entitled ‘Taking action: advancing critical issues of the greater sunshine coast on business, community, education and health.’ The university is to be congratulated on holding its 5th futures conference. Looking at the guest speakers there was a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Interestingly, key note speaker Ed Morrison focused, in part, on the transformation of universities over the past 30 years as the global economy formed. He highlights that in the era in which we live ‘brain power, innovation and networks generate sustainable prosperity’. Pointing to the US, Mr Morrison focuses on the development of innovation and entrepreneurship which is generated by universities bringing together the best and the brightest from across regions to develop a change in our thinking and importantly the development of a prosperous region. With USC, I can proudly say this is already happening. The growth of USC’s collective intellectual capacity has a reach far outside the region itself. Vice Chancellor Greg Hill reminds us that there are over 1,000 international students studying at the university that compromise 12% of total student numbers who will make ‘very significant contributions to the regional community and its economy’. There are core elements to our economy, yet by utilising university resources, its students and faculty, new industries will be established and current industries enhanced. We tend not to think of the university as the first port of call for research, development and innovation. Though there is no problem in looking to traditional wisdom, we should turn to our university which will grow to be a very important player in developing the sunshine coast.

On Monday morning, February 9, I was absolutely appalled to see this useless pile of junk left outside the Lifeline bins in the Turner Street Shopping Complex. I am so disheartened by some individuals in our community who blatantly ignore the clear signage stating that nothing is to be left outside the bins. Councillor Rick Baberowski wrote in last week’s paper (edition, February 11) about roadside rubbish. Councillor you must have good eyesight to see this rubbish, as the grass around Beerwah is over your knees. It is a disgrace. Council only mows once a month now, even walking around the foot path which has a strip mowed around it, the only things I look out for is snakes. I don't know what our rates get spent on but I for one won't be walking through long grass to pick up rubbish when council can't even keep the footpaths mowed. Gloria Vogel Beerwah

Trans-Pacific Partnership. Sounds harmless enough but it could be the most undemocratic detrimental Agreement ever undertaken. The TPP is in negotiation between 12 countries including America, Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc. This legislation seems to have been negotiated in secret so far and the media only got wind of it because it was discovered by WikiLeaks earlier last year. The leaks have shown that this ‘Trade Agreement’ has virtually nothing to do with trade and everything to do with Multinational Corporations having power over our countries laws. The leaked draft indicates that consumer rights could be significantly eroded if Australia signs and ratifies the TPP as it stands. This could be an extreme threat to our environment regulations, health laws, and food security to name a few, giving International Corporations the right to go over our government’s head on environmental regulations. They could have the right to sue our government for lost income if policies hurt their profits. For example at present Quebec ( Canada ) is being sued for $250 million of taxpayers’ dollars after imposing a pause on fracking, as NSW has just done here, so potentially we could be also be sued for trying to protect our environment. According to citizen.org over $3 billion has been paid to foreign investors under U.S. trade and investment pacts, while over $14 billion in claims are pending under such deals, primarily targeting environmental, energy, and public health policies. According to ABC Environment once countries sign the agreement the public will only have 14 days to review. What a joke! Abbott has apparently said to be supportive of signing the deal and if he does he could be tying the hands of future governments on environmental issues due to clauses written into the agreement. I implore people to research The TPP for yourselves online and make your own decision on how evil this secret agreement really is. This Partnership needs to be made clear to the public so we know what they are planning, so please get onto your local Politicians, State and Federal Politicians and especially Tony Abbott to let them know this is not good enough. choice. com.au have a TPP kit you can download with all the contact details you need and helpful tips. Skippy-less Park
Is it just me? I have never really understood the naming of Skippy Park. I have lived in Landsborough for 15 years and on my trip to Beerwah would marvel at the kangaroos as they grazed this area. They would group together under the trees and enjoy the peace and tranquillity. All of a sudden they were eradicated from the area, a fence was erected to keep them out and someone had the audacity to call it Skippy Park? Skippy-less Park would be more like it. Where did they go to? Does anyone really care? As for the overwhelming support by local residents, most people I have spoken to agree that the name is not fitting for the park. Don’t get me wrong, it is a beautiful park area, just the wrong name. Could you please tell us how the name actually came about and who made the decision on behalf of everyone? I believe the name evolved out of the community as a playful nod to the past remnant open space (and TV program) and not as an actual description of its use now as a safely fenced park. Hopefully we don’t mind too much that there is still lots of skipping only now it’s by children and people wanting to get fitter. The park name first evolved while council was developing a 10 year Recreation Infrastructure Program for Caloundra City Council around 1991. Staff conducting a visual inspection of the park to ascertain appropriate development adopted the term Skippy Park to use in that program in recognition of the large numbers (then) of grazing kangaroos. I recently realised how thankful I was for the new development in Beerwah. We have more choices, and better selections, and I appreciate more variety. Coming from living on the coast I used to often travel back to Kawana and Maroochydore for shopping. Now thankfully I can purchase most things in my own area and bring friends out this way to local cafes. I would like to encourage residents to use our facilities first before going further afield. I try to share my purchasing of groceries, fruit and veggies, butcher and use of local cafes around. I want them all to not only survive, but do well, so perhaps that means that more people need to change and have a look at what is available at the newer end of the shopping precinct. I’m so pleased with our pharmacy and its new position and all the stock it now offers. I also appreciate all the work done in upgrading our streets and especially making Simpson Street much more picturesque. The much-loved charity desperately needs to boost numbers of Volunteer Telephone Crisis Supporters to maintain its crucial service – the Lifeline 13 11 14 Crisis Line. On any average day, Lifeline Telephone Crisis line will answer approximately 1,800 calls! Every contact made with the Lifeline Crisis Support line is answered by a trained dedicated volunteer. Lifeline is encouraging anyone who is interested to give it a go. No previous experience is necessary as all training is provided. Participants will need to have access to a computer and internet as elements of the training is via the Lifeline e-learning platform. Those interested in giving their time to training, becoming accredited and volunteering for regular shifts may find the experience immensely rewarding whilst making a real difference to the lives of other Australians in need of support. New blood for Sports Club At their annual general meeting last Tuesday, the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club members took a major step in their journey back from the brink. More recently, the Club has fallen into financial difficulties and some tough decisions were made by the outgoing committee to ensure that the Club has a chance to continue providing quality facilities to sporting groups, schools, community organisations and event organisers. To allow for new ideas and new zeal, the entire executive management committee vacated their substantive positions, allowing new faces and names to take the reins and lead the organisation into the future. The new look executive committee is now Warren Raddatz (president), Semi Minchev (vice-president), Stephen Forster (secretary), Dimi Young (treasurer) and Leisa Thistlethwaite (committee member). Joining them on the management committee is a representative from each of the affiliated sporting clubs. Outgoing President Ken Fullerton said that although the Club has had a turbulent year, there were many positives. “Events run by the Club, which were financially and socially successful, were the rodeo, the Australia Day Show ‘n Shine, Melbourne Cup, the closing ceremony of the Glass House Country Festival, the Women’s Motor Cycle Group run for cancer, a Show ‘n Shine for the Cancer Fund, Relay for Life cancer run and the amateur boxing night,” Ken said. Ken also acknowledged and thanked many local people, businesses and organisations who have assisted and contributed over the last year, including groundsman Ron Ford. “Ron has presented the fields and grounds to a

Mr Raddatz outlined three basic commitments he and the committee will work towards. “Firstly, I’m committed to working damn hard and coming up with a plan to get the Club back on track. “Secondly, I’m committed to working together as a team and working cooperatively with the affiliated sporting clubs to achieve the best outcomes for the Sports Club as a whole. “Lastly, I’m committed to making sure that a primary objective of the Sports Club is to promote involvement in community sport, fitness and
wellbeing through sport and for the sporting clubs themselves to strive to be competitive and successful. “Combining these sporting objectives with the social and community roles the facilities and grounds perform, I we think we have a solid basis to build the Sports Club back up again,” concluded Mr Raddatz. The night also included robust, but positive, discussions on the financial position of the club. ANZ Area Manager Andrew Squires and Beerwah Branch Manager Sam Jones outlined what the ANZ banks’ position is. “We are very comfortable with the mortgage arrangements we have with the club,” Mr Squires said. “We are working with the club on a range of options to improve the financial position, including options such as changing the mortgage to an interest only loan, and possibly implementing a ‘mortgage introducer program’, where the Club receives financial benefits from members taking out mortgage loans with ANZ.”

Banana Bush
Tabernaemontana pandacaqui Ever walked through the bush only to smell a beautiful scent? Well, this plant is one of those. The white fragrant flowers are a feature of Banana Bush as is the dark green tapered leaves. The fruit with its distinctive banana shape, often found in pairs, is green turning yellowy orange hence the common name. This shrub grows to 4m, bushy if pruned and is a great addition to any garden. It is found in Queensland, New South Wales and New Guinea in rainforest and fringing the forest along watercourses. The leaves are simple, opposite, obovate, distinct midrib and lateral veins. White scented flowers from leaf axils in spring / summer. This plant belongs to the same family as the highly poisonous Oleander and is toxic - care should be taken and it might be wise to remove ripe fruit from areas where children play.
Ask Brownie Can you help me with my tomato plants? They seem to have wilted despite the good rains we’ve had and the liquid fertiliser I’ve been giving them. I grew really good tomatoes in the same spot before Christmas, and so I’m not sure why these ones are sick. Julie from Palmview The key to the problem is that you broke one of the golden rules of growing tomatoes or any of the solanum group of plants, including capsicums and eggplants. The golden rule is to never grow solanum plants in the same place twice in a row without growing something else in the spot for a while. Problems such as root nematodes, fungal wilt diseases and viruses can establish in the soil and will infect the next lot of solanum plants grown in the same spot. By growing something else in the soil, other than a tomato or capsicum or eggplant, you starve these pests and diseases of their host plants, and so they disappear back to low levels in the soil. There isn’t much you can do to save these tomato plants now. I’d suggest pulling them up, disposing of them in the bin and using the space to grow some beans.

Quinine Berry
Petalostigma triloculare Quinine Berry is an attractive shrub usually growing three to four metres. The leaves are glossy green and contrast with the orange globular fruit, giving this plant an attractive and obvious appearance in natural bush, or in the home garden. The flowers are less significant, small and cream green in colour. Flowering and fruiting usually occurs December to May. The orange fruit is ribbed and seeds ‘explode’ from the dried capsules. Nature has amazing methods of ensuring the spread of the species. The name refers to the bitter taste of the fruit but the plant has no relationship to the Quinine used for treatment of malaria. However there is some evidence that a similar plant was used by aboriginal people for medicinal purposes. Quinine Berry is also important as a food source for the larvae of the Copper Jewel Butterfly.

Sport Local Tri Club welcomes new junior coach Contributed by Deb Ives The family friendly Ngungun Triathlon Club based in the Glass House Mountains recently celebrated our second birthday. We have a weekly training programs for both juniors and adults, and the club is always welcoming new members who are interested in keeping fit by swimming, riding and running. Over the past two years we have developed a strong junior membership for kids aged five years and up, running weekly training sessions covering all three aspects of triathlon - swimming, riding, and running. These sessions are held at Skippy Park, Mooloolah Pool or Ewen Maddock Dam, ensuring the kids get a wide variety of experiences including open water swims. Most recently the club welcomed a new junior coach Mark (pictured). His weekly sessions concentrate on being fun, with fitness and games, while touching on triathlon specific skills. Kids will need their own bike and helmet, and it is recommended that they can swim the length of a 25m pool. Sunday, February 22 will see a dedicated bunch at the Maleny Showgrounds from 8.00am for sign on starting at 8.30am for a community Bootcamp, having fun and getting fit. The Bootcamp will be hosted by Jason from Tribal Training in Maleny and will raise funds for Maleny Show Girl entrant in both Rural Ambassador and Charity categories, Stacey Bentley. Stacey reckons Jason is an awesome fitness instructor and is great at creating an exciting outdoor based course for all levels of fitness. The Bootcamp runs from 8.30am until 9.30am and then there is a Tribal Training Fitness Challenge at 9.30am for those wishing to test themselves and win some prizes. There will also be a raffle on the day and lucky door prize as well. So if you are looking for something fun to do and want to learn some new exercises, come along, bring the whole family, or invite a friend to join in on the fun. Lydia Costello with an 81 nett. NTP’s were won by: Cathy Stone No 5; Teresa Keast No 16 and Debra Rutherford No 18. The Ball Rundown went to 83 nett. Next week’s competition on February 19 is the Men’s Invitation Day; 9.00am shotgun start. We will be playing a two Person Ambrose.
