Hi Everyone...
on the Cover
There are often times when I’m out and about chatting with locals and I get the question, “What would I have to do to get on the front page of the paper?” Depending on where my head is at that exact moment and the attitude of the person asking me, my answers can vary. Sometimes I suggest an act of bravery, being kind, generous and helping others, wearing a crazy outfit, doing something out of the ordinary, or sometimes just being in a really quirky photo that will capture the attention of our readers. However, this week’s cover story is about Glass House Mountains local Brett Standring who recently returned from the US after completing a long-held dream of running in the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. This week our choice of a cover story is a lot more personal, as Brett and his wife Megan are also part of the team that brings GC&M News to our readers every week. We are really pleased to bring you the story of their journey, and I reckon anyone who knows them would agree that they are the kind of people who tick all the boxes for being totally cover worthy! Great job, Team Standring!! Regards,

Local lass accepted into youth dance company By Sonia Clark Teagan Potter of Mount Mellum dreams of being a professional dancer, and it seems her hard work and dedication to her passion is getting recognised. Teagan, who turns 14 next month, has recently been accepted into the Brisbanebased Expressions Dance Company’s (EDC) Pilot Youth Company. Teagan has been committed to dancing since she was a young child, and has trained extensively both here on the Coast and in Brisbane. She has won the local talent search at Beerwah Charity Sports for the previous two years, and dances in the Innate Contemporary Company in Brisbane every year. Naturally she is now very excited to be a part of this new youth dance company. She is extremely dedicated, and regularly trains five afternoons a week which she juggles with her school commitments. She has performed for two years with Queensland Ballet as a child extra in ‘The Nutcracker’.
Her mum Annie Potter says that Teagan lives for dance – especially contemporary. Over the last few years she has moved from competitive group competition towards a more focused individual training schedule. While her main focus is ballet and contemporary dance, Teagan also participates in acrobatics and loves ‘aerial silk’ work. Any spare time she has when she’s not catching up on homework, Teagan enjoys watching YouTube to learn more about current dance moves – she also loves watching dance drama shows. As part of her professional development Teagan has participated in a number of workshops and has been invited to attend intensive training workshops through EDC. She is understandably thrilled to have successfully auditioned to be accepted into this innovative new youth company. The eight week pilot program will commence during the first week back at school and will involve a weekly commute to the EDC studios in Fortitude Valley.

Most of us have heard of people doing a 43km marathon or 21km half marathon but one Glass House Mountains local Brett Standring has just returned from the US after competing in his fourth ultra-marathon, which is an incredible 162kms or 100 miles. Back in June Brett competed in the Western States Endurance Run, an event he explains is known as the Wimbledon of ultra-marathons. It is the world’s oldest endurance run, being in its forty fifth year. The run takes place through some truly spectacular scenery on trails in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains starting at the base of the Squaw Valley ski resort and finishing at the Placer High School track in Auburn, California. Brett explains that each year around 5,000 runners go into the draw with 270 of the runners chosen to compete, this year was Brett’s fifth year being part of the complex ballot process, and he was only rated as having a 20% probability of being successful and gaining entry. So when his name was drawn out, there was absolutely no doubt in his mind that he would be going, even suffering a ‘runners hernia’ three weeks out and having to stop his intensive training, there was never any question in Brett’s mind that he was going to do it. Having completed 100 mile runs at the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, and in the Glass House Mountains, Brett was confident that his muscle memory would allow him to finish the
race, however he wasn’t sure of the time it would take for him to complete the event. The terrain in the Western State is quite rugged. Parts of the trail can have snow on the ground at the highest passes, and 40 degree temperatures in the low Image by Facchino Photography valleys and includes running through icy waters of the American River. also able to run the last 1.5kms with Brett and Phil his pacer and on the cover you see them Brett said that one of the most difficult parts of all running across the finish line (wearing their the race is the running at altitude. All action at Shell Beerwah The team at Shell Beerwah (located at the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-operative) is hoping that another local will win big in their current competition to win an all-expenses paid motorsport experience in Singapore. The competition also coincides with the installation of a series of brand new pumps at the service station. Store manager Frances Ross says that the last two new pumps have just been calibrated and that, after a couple of months, it’s wonderful to have all of the new pumps up and running. “We are so very grateful to our customers for their patience and understanding. The feedback from customers in relation to our new pumps has been very positive,” says Frances. Locals will notice some slight changes to where fuel is located, though the exciting news is now customers can conveniently access E10 on four pumps, diesel on eight pumps and premium and ULP on eight pumps. Frances, along with Co-op General Manager Steve Williams, is hoping another local (like last year) will win the currently-running national ‘Scuderia Ferrari Experience’ competition, which runs until July 28. “The main prize is amazing!” says Frances. “Allexpenses paid with spending money to Singapore and the winners treated like royalty – valued at $20,000. We are so hoping another local wins this one!” To enter, customers need to fill up with 30 litres
or more of Shell Premium Unleaded in one transaction, keep their receipt, and enter details online at shell.com.au/motorsportpromo. Scuderia Ferrari merchandise prize packs can also be won daily.

Winter Theatre Festival
Bookings for Maleny Arts Council’s Winter Theatre Festival are now open, and the first two plays will feature stories of strong Indigenous women with fascinating stories, reflecting the NAIDOC theme, ‘Because of her, we can’. ‘Which Way Home’ opens the festival on Saturday August 18 at 7.15pm, and ‘Rovers’, a new Queensland play, performs on Sunday August 26, at 2pm. The Sydney Morning Herald said of ‘Which Way Home’ that it was “a warmly affirming window on Indigenous family life”. The Maleny production is at the end of an Australian tour by the highly regarded Ilbijerri Theatre Company of Melbourne and directed by Rachael Maza. After sell-out performances in Melbourne at its premiere and at the Sydney Festival, Maleny Arts Council is privileged to have been able to secure it for their audience in the Maleny Community Centre. Written by Katie Beckett, who also plays Tash, ‘Which Way Home’ is the story of an Aboriginal girl, her much loved ageing dad and her determination to take him back to country. Their journey takes them from Yuggerah Country Ipswich to Muriwarri Country, Goodooga, and Katie drew on her own story of growing up with a single Aboriginal father, to write the sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant script. Kamahi Djordon King plays Tash’s dad.
The evening will conclude with a Q and A session in which the audience will be able to interact with the cast and director. The president of the Arts Council, Peter Lavery, is particularly excited about the second production, ‘Rovers’, which features a journey of an Aboriginal woman and a white woman friend, in a Landrover.
“This is Belloo Creative’s second production and we had a sell-out performance with their first original play ‘Motherland’, in 2016,” said Professor Lavery. “‘Rovers’ will have its world premiere in Lismore and then come to us for its home state premiere. “Belloo Creative is a Queensland company run by women, and this new work about two gutsy women is woven from true stories and wild machinations. It will resonate with audiences of all ages.” Completely different, the third play in the series will be ‘Death by Soprano’, featuring Melbourne-based singer Isabel Hertaeg. It is an irreverent look at the rules of opera – sopranos must die – an a-z romp through ‘Operatic Occupational Hazards’. If you love opera, or if you hate it, this show will make you laugh. ‘Death by Soprano’ is on Sunday September 16 at 2pm. A season ticket for the three plays in the Winter Theatre Festival is $75, members $65, students $40. Separately they are $30 and $25 for members. If you can book six seats for the season you pay only the members’ price. Bookings can be made at www.malenyartscouncil.com or at the Maleny Visitors Centre and, if you want to book six or more, ring the treasurer, John Marsden, on 5494 2584.

Community News Celebrate historic milestone in style
Local Heroes grants awarded
Your oldest outfit – maybe something from the depths of grandma’s wardrobe – will be the new look at the 2018 Beerwah Charity Sports! This year marks a major historic milestone for the Sunshine Coast. In 1868 the road from Brisbane to Gympie Pioneer family, William and was constructed, William and Mary Clementina Burgess and children, Grigor established Bankfoot House near the second generat ion to live at the Glass House Mountains in October Bankfoot House (BH Collection) 1868, and on 12 November the first Cobb & Co coach made the journey to Gympie on the new road, with Bankfoot House as the lunch stop. Over those 150 years this region has changed dramatically: timber getters, farms, townships, railway, schools, more roads, larger towns, now coastal cities, tourists … and in 2018 the growth and changes continue. So, while we enjoy the benefits of living in this beautiful location, we should not forget that it all started with the Grigors and other pioneer families who had the foresight to settle along the Gympie Road. On Saturday, August 25, come to the Charity Sports dressed as a pioneer. No specific historic style required – fashions have changed many times over those 150 years – just think of any generation you would like to acknowledge. Come dressed as your grandmother, a pioneer farmer, teacher, bullocky, nurse, whatever appeals. There will be prizes for the best outfits (ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls). To register for the competition, look for the Celebrate Glasshouse Country tent and a display of historic photos by the Friends of Bankfoot House.

Four lots of $250 are available for individuals or groups in the electorate, four times a year, and Mr Powell is very impressed with the calibre of this round’s applications, with the successful applicants being the Palmwoods Netball Club, Mooloolah’s Moofest, young Maleny Swim Club member Jaymes Roser, and Studio 23. “Studio 23 is a new startup, not-for-profit service which will provide services and activities for people with disabilities, and eventually aims to expand into providing support for all young people and leisure activities for everyone,” said Mr Powell. “Studio 23 will be a centre for empowering people with diverse abilities to socialise, work, create and learn, and this grant will assist them to do just that. “The learning and social hub is being developed by a group of students, parents and educators in the Maleny area and is the brainchild of local mum, Kris Fitzgerald, whose son inspired her to begin the charity.” Mr Powell said that the centre is in the final stages of securing their first physical location to begin offering these services. There are plans for a fundraiser gala event to be held later in the year at the Maleny Community Centre for Studio 23, which will further enable them to secure a location for this essential service, which once operational, will be fully integrated with the NDIS. Saving the world one coffee cup at a time
Lorna Buxton from Glass House Mountains is the kind of person you would describe as a solution finder and not a problem dweller. Lorna is keen to play her part in doing the right thing by our environment, so when she noticed that some of her friends were finding it tricky to carry their ‘Keep Cups’ full of coffee around while juggling other items, she decided to find a way to fix the situation. In the spirit of reusing fabric to make Boomerang Bags, Lorna has created both a single and double ‘Cuppa Bag’ and her friends are loving them. The idea is that you slip your arm through the handle of the bag and you are able to keep your coffee upright, and your hands free.
Peachester NBN tower approval recommended Using recycled hard plastic packaging from kiwifruit containers, Lorna has also created a firm base for the double bag so that the cups stay balanced as you walk. Lorna isn’t looking to set up a Lorna with Patricia and her business, but she ‘Cuppa Bags’ has been making the bags on a cost recovery basis. If you would like to purchase a bag you can generally find Lorna at bingo at Club Glass House on a Friday morning, or you can give her a call on 5493 0506.
An NBN fixed wireless broadband tower planned to be erected in Peachester is poised to be approved at this Thursday’s ordinary meeting of Sunshine Coast Council. After 245 properly made public submissions (244 against, one for) and a protracted development application assessment period, Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski called the application in to be decided by the full council. The tower, to be located on Range Road, has 17 dwellings closer than the 400m exclusion zone required under the planning scheme. Despite this, and the overwhelming public rejection of the tower location, council planning officers will recommend that the application be approved with conditions. “Notwithstanding opposition to the proposal from residents in the Peachester community, it is considered that the proposal sufficiently complies with the requirements of the planning scheme,” the report states.

Need local computer or internet solutions? Are you feeling daunted about setting up computer networks at your home or business? Unsure about what the introduction of NBN will mean for you? Want to access ‘rocket speed internet’? Or just want to speak to someone locally about computer repairs, networking or internet queries? Locally owned and operated Netlock (computer and internet services) have been providing comprehensive iT services, set up and support, internet and hosting, maintenance, repairs and sales from their Landsborough offices since 1999. Previously trading as Kingston computers, in recent years the business has streamlined all its services under the Netlock name. While the long running business looks after the iT needs of numerous larger businesses and companies both locally and nationally, founder and owner Paul Kingston is always keen to assist local businesses and individuals with their internet or computer needs. Paul says that they are always available to assist local residents and businesses achieve their iT goals. “since we first opened our doors in Landsborough over 18 years ago we’ve always had people drop in with either computer or iT questions or looking for computer repairs,” says Paul. “We pride ourselves in our willingness to bend over backwards to help our local customers – so no query is too big or small. “We are always happy to provide advice or answer any computer or internet related questions anytime.” With NBN already here in parts of Beerwah, and with Glass House Mountains and Landsborough
area to soon follow, Paul says that there is a lot of misinformation around the use and capabilities of the new network and the effect NBN will have on Phone services. The friendly team of local staff at Netlock can answer all your NBN queries. With highly experienced technicians working onsite, Paul says people are always welcome to call or drop in to their offices at cribb street if they have a question. Alternatively, a team member from Netlock can come out to your home or business to provide the solutions you need. Netlock staff can set people up with a new NBN plan, as well as being the gatekeeper who can deal with all the services for you. Many people don’t realise that eventually they will lose their landline as anything still operating on copper cable will eventually become obsolete. This also includes all integrated services, faxes, phone-based security systems, etc. Netlock can easily and efficiently help resolve all these issues with professional and affordable options. As a local service provider, if you sign up with them for NBN, they won’t just post you a modem like other providers do with no instructions or support. Netlock will come out to your business or home and help you set it all up so that everything is working perfectly. They offer an Australian based help desk and Australian based technical and service support with 24/7 support also available if required. For homes and businesses still wanting a physical landline, they also offer their own Net phone and handset plans to keep you connected. For businesses with more advanced
telecommunication needs, Netlock specialises in Virtual PBX systems that are fully featured NBN compatible business telephone systems. With much cheaper call rates than most traditional phone services and a myriad of features such as message to email, call attendant, video conferencing and the ability to make and answer calls from virtually any device including mobile phones, computer, laptops and iPads - this possibly the most flexible and fully featured PBX system on the market. From email solutions to providing local and cloud-based servers, domain hosting to web design – if you need an iT job completed, contact the friendly local team at Netlock. As your fully featured service provider they can support every aspect of your physical and digital network including providing business and home phones, servers (hardware and software), software upgrades, security, web development and maintenance, wireless services and much more. A large selection of high quality handsets is available for all Netlock phone systems. Find them at 3/42 cribb street Landsborough, for more details visit www.netlock.com.au or call 5494 1115.

Prevention is so much better than cure
By Dr Abrahams of Maleny Dental Clinic Throughout my dental career there is one issue that seriously concerns me: the amount of tooth decay in children’s teeth does not seem to be decreasing. Tooth decay causes holes in teeth which cause pain, abscesses or infection, the need for fillings, root canal treatments and extractions. No one likes to have this done whatever your age, but often the young age of a child means that they are required to see a specialist and these treatments usually have to be done under sedation or a general anaesthetic. It then becomes very traumatic for the child (and the parents) and it is not without risks. It is also expensive, costing between $3,500 and $5,000, and early loss of the deciduous / baby teeth will usually mean that the adult teeth will come through in the wrong positions, leading to a further cost of around $5,000 to $10,000 for orthodontic treatment to correct this in the future. The sad fact is that, the children’s suffering and unpleasant experiences are all totally avoidable if you follow some very simple advice: Refined sugar found in fizzy drinks, cordials, cereal, all processed foods, lollies, chocolate, ice cream, energy drinks and fruit yoghurt causes tooth decay. This is also the case with natural sugar in smoothies, fruit juice, dried fruits and even milk when given in a bottle overnight. If you avoid these sugar-rich foods and drinks, especially as snacks between meals, decay will be very much reduced. Of course, brushing is very important, twice a day, with parents brushing their children’s teeth at night time until they are around nine years old, to clean the adult teeth as they come through between six-to-nine years old. Flossing and using mouthwash also helps as you get older. Please take your children to the dentist regularly so problems can be detected early and advice given. They won’t take themselves. They rely on you to do this for them. Prevention is so much better than cure in so many ways. For everyone involved. Shocking! “This jar contains the teeth I extracted during one afternoon in theatre, including 16 from a two year old child” – the shocking reality of a diet high in sugar and its effect on our children’s teeth
Beerburrum quarry town hall meeting
As previously reported in GC&M News, a development application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to develop a large hard-rock quarry on the Beerburrum-Woodford Road at Beerburrum. The quarry would result in around 150 trucks passing through the small hamlet of Beerburrum and right past the front door of the primary school. The application is still being considered by council, however a decision deadline is approaching. In response, a concerned group of residents from Beerburrum and surrounds organised a town meeting to hear about the proposal and to ask questions of the staff and consultants from the Barro Group – who lodged the development application – as well as planning and development officers from Sunshine Coast Council. To update locals on the progress, another town hall meeting will be held at the Beerburrum Community Hall this Thursday evening, July 18, from 6pm. Beerburrum Action Group spokesperson Heather Cardaci said “anyone who has an interest in protecting the character of our national heritage listed region” is welcome to attend. “In attendance will be Cr Rick Baberowski, Andrew Powell (MP) and representatives of the Barro Group,” said Heather. “If you have any questions, or would like to hear more about the quarry development application currently before council, please attend the meeting in the hall in Anzac Avenue, Beerburrum.” More information can be found on the ‘Beerburrum Action Group’ Facebook page.
Mega Garage Sale callout
A Mega Garage Sale fundraiser for Chaplaincy is being planned for Saturday August 4 from 7am-noon in the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church carpark, at 58 Roberts Road, Beerwah. The organisers are putting the request out for items of donation which can be dropped off on the Friday before, August 3, from 8am to 8pm at the church. Items can include any good quality in-working-order items such as books, toys, clothes, homewares, plants, etc. Please no large furniture items. There will also be a jumping castle, a popcorn and fairy floss machine, coffee van, and snags and drinks for sale on the day. The funds will go towards Mike Turner, the chaplain at Beerwah State School and Beerwah High School, and Steph Alksne, the chaplain at Beerburrum State School, to be used in their school communities. There will be no eftpos at the sale or many plastic bags, so don’t forget to bring your cash and a bag to take home your goodies in. There will be no parking in the church carpark, however there will be car parking available in both the Glasshouse Christian College and at Beerwah High School’s external car park. Scripture Union Queensland chaplains, or ‘chappies’, provide spiritual and emotional support to school communities. They are in the prevention and support business: helping students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness, to drug abuse, depression and anxiety. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for children and young people in crisis, and those who just need a friend. They also provide support for staff and parents in school communities.

Event co-host Charles Russell said domestic violence against women and children is now recognised as a serious and widespread problem across Australia with enormous individual and community impacts and social costs. “It is hoped that this event will continue to raise awareness of this important issue and provide practical assistance in caring for victims of domestic and family violence,” Charles said. Admission is $10 adults, $5 children, $25 family including food and drinks, entertainment and entry in lucky door prize draws sponsored by local Landsborough businesses. Contributed by Patricia Bradford At our last meeting, which happened to coincide with the winter solstice, we discussed updates on the progress of the tribute to Nessie Pratten, with thanks to Sally Joyce for her contribution. Members commented on how enjoyable our social meeting in May was and were disappointed that a decision has been made to cancel our Friendship Day for July. Results of the competition bench for April: 1st Pam Innes on 18 points, 2nd Margaret Ferris on 14 points, and, for May: 1st went to Pam Innes on 20 points and 2nd went to Patricia Bradford on 17 points. Winter in full swing at Morriis House As the temperature drops and you reach for your winter woollies, spare a thought for those in our community who might be doing it tough in this chilly weather. Morris House Neighbourhood Centre offers food assistance and a cuppa and a chat to community members experiencing financial hardship or homelessness. Since receiving some knitted beanies, scarves and socks handmade by the Sunshine Linus Group, they have also been able to share with those in need in our community. Morris House volunteer Jenny Stevenson thanked Sunshine Linus Group volunteer Leonie Newell for the generous donation.
“These lovely beanies and scarves will be really appreciated by the people we support in our community. It will help them to stay warm and hopefully give them some comfort knowing others care,” she said. Morris House is located at 470 Old Landsborough Road, across the road from the Landsborough Hall.
Support for Woodies appreciated Contributed by John Andrews The Montville State School’s Main Hall was brimming with wooden items of all shapes and sizes – ranging from wooden spoons to a tri-trailer semi-trailer – at the recent Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild’s Wood Expo. Most of the items were for sale, but others were entered in the competition.
The Woodies are extremely grateful to the Montville State School for its generosity and cooperation and offer their thanks to the principal, caretaker and the P&C for making and donating the cupcakes which were sold in the canteen on the day. Thanks also to the members of the public for their valued patronage. The Woodies’ sheds are located near the Montville Sports Grounds and are open from Monday to Saturday inclusive from 8am to 11.30am and welcome all men and women who are interested in working with wood. Various courses are offered on a regular basis.

Local adventures and ‘Bush Kindy’ coming soon! The winter school holiday Vacation Care program which wrapped up last week at Glass House Early Education Centre was a whole heap of fun. School aged kids (aka ‘Schoolies’) had an awesome jam-packed couple of weeks featuring a heap of boredom busting activities, local adventures, cool and creative craft and some super special excursions. The ‘inter-centre’ colour fun run excursion held on the Tuesday of the first week of the holidays was a massive hit with the kids. The Schoolies got to ‘get their active on’ by joining other QCCS vacation care groups and participating in a ‘colour fun run’.
There were smiles all round as the kids got colourful and competed in a little friendly competition with schoolies from other Centres. During the second week, a visit to the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge was a huge success.
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Throughout the year, donations had been collected from the Centre's families for the refuge and a highlight excursion of the vacation care program was for the Schoolies to take all the donations and present them to their four-legged
recipients. Schoolies were thrilled to be able to cuddle some of the refuge animals and see first-hand how their donations make a real difference. This is the third year that the Centre has organised a collection for the refuge and it was wonderful for the kids to be involved. Another excursion highlight was the everpopular visit to Strawberry Fields at Palmview. With a bumper strawberry season this year, the Schoolies had a ball picking (and eating!) the delicious fruit.
Ange and the team are excited to advise that they will be attending the Early Years Expo at Glass House State School on Wednesday August 1. The Expo is great opportunity for families to find out more about the Centre and the team will be planting pots for children to take away from their stall. Ange and the team are also thrilled to let people know to ‘watch this space!’ as they finalise plans to launch their ‘Bush Kindy’ program for the Centre. This innovative nature exploratory based play program will allow children from the school ready room to visit the local park and focus on an exciting discovery of natural flora and fauna. The Page Street Centre hours are from 6.30am to 6.30pm, and for more details contact Ange on 5438 7311 or email GlassHouse@qccs.com.au.

JULY 18 - 2018 ONLINE EDITION - 02
What needs to be done to improve Mooloolah? Recently Mooloolah Year 5 teacher, Camille Freiberg, contacted GC&M News to see if we would be interested in sharing the students’ Letters to the Editor that her students put together with their persuasive writing skills. Below are a selection of what issues the students see as important to the local community. Public pool I believe that while the Mooloolah’s swimming pool is very popular, that’s not the case in winter. We must get a new, heated swimming pool. Mooloolah State School is lacking sport in winter at the moment. Everyone had lots of fun in summer when we did swimming lessons. We had lots of students go to districts and do well, but now we’re just wasting our PE time. The swimming pool is practically useless in winter and it starts to turn green. If more people swim, we could raise more money to make the school better. Think about it, it will make everyone happy. If we have a heated swimming pool, I can guarantee we would do well at districts and have more people moving to the community! Bonnie Muller Dune buggy and dirt bike track needed I strongly believe that there should be a dune buggy and dirt bike track near the Mooloolah Country Club. People could have fun on the weekends doing jumps, skids or 4WDriving. They have lots of land and you won’t have to cut down any trees. The entire community can use it. There should also be a hire facility so that people can try it out too. If kids go on this, it could help their driving education! The community needs it! Jack Crowther Not enough buses I’m writing this letter to you to tell you that there are nowhere near enough buses from Landsborough to Maleny. My sisters and her friends have to catch a train, then a bus, to get to school. This equates to Maleny High School students who live in Mooloolah traveling four hours and 40 minutes every day! This is unbelievable! So, please consider adding in an extra bus service from Mooloolah to Landsborough then connecting to
Maleny in the morning and in the afternoon for the poor tired high school students. This would be a great service and the Mooloolah community would greatly benefit! Nayten M. Fish More shops for Mooloolah Valley I strongly believe that we need more shops in Mooloolah Valley. Right now there is only an IGA, a bottle shop, a butcher, a hardware store and a bakery. I am very sure that these are not relevant stores for the younger population. In the Mooloolah Valley shopping district we need a video store, a book store and most of all a bigger grocery store like Woolworths or Coles. This would help by not having to drive out of town and waste petrol and money going to the big shopping centres when we could just get those shops in Mooloolah Valley. Logan Quinn-Haines Expand the skate park I think that the Mooloolah Valley Junior Skate Park should be improved by making it bigger and better. I also feel that the community should be aware that when birds lay their eggs people start to get swooped by magpies, plovers and other birds. This experience is not enjoyable for anyone using the skate park. Ciara Jones Fountain for the park I strongly believe that we should have a beautiful light blue fountain installed at the Mooloolah Park because we must make the park a peaceful place. The soothing noise of water falling from a fountain is very tranquil. Fountains are the key to relaxing. The Mooloolah community definitely needs a water fountain! Lucas Goodman Homeless people deserve a second chance People are dying and lots of children are suffering because they don’t have any homes or food. Lots of people look at homeless people and don’t even think about helping them. I think the Mooloolah area, and the Sunshine Coast as a whole, should have at least two shelters for the homeless. They can leave whenever they want and arrive when they want. Scarlett Dickson
Expand Mooloolah’s Park I think we should definitely expand Mooloolah’s local park. We need to get more equipment and a bigger grassland to have picnics! I also think getting more equipment for the junior area would be great! It only has about five pieces of equipment. I think we should have more bike and scooter paths around the park – that would be amazing! More visitors would come to enjoy the barbeques and use all the facilities! Matilda Montague Build bike paths More pathways and bike paths should be put around Mooloolah Valley because kids can’t drive everywhere, so they have to use bikes, scooters and skate boards. Some kids don’t know road rules so they have to use a path and not go on our big busy roads where cars and oversized vehicles are going 80km/h an hour. We don’t want kids getting run over. Then you will feel really sorry! I believe that the pathways and bike paths will help parents as well, because kids’ parents won’t have to take their kids everywhere. Also there will be fewer cars on the road and less pollution in the air and kids will be much fitter. Emma Phillis We need a footy team I strongly believe Mooloolah Valley should get a footy team and a field. A lot of people in Mooloolah want to play footy but are not able to have their say. Mooloolah Valley has plenty of space just waiting there to be used. This could be used as a football field for a club instead of people having to go to Caloundra three days a week for a proper game. Michael Evans Upgrade for Glenview Road I strongly believe we need the Glenview Road redone because when it rains the bridge floods. The road is really bumpy and dangerously easy to crash! Lives are in your hands! The corner I live on has little visibility and extremely high chances of a car crash! You could be killing people by not upgrading the road! Everybody in Glenview is complaining about this horrific corner, the bad bridge and bumpy roads! You should make a change! Save lives! Willem Poulus

I give a moo for mooloolah Upgrading the Mooloolah Park I think we need the Mooloolah Park to be upgraded because it has been the same for a long time. The community definitely need more space to eat food and more barbeque space. We also need more equipment to play on, for example flying foxes, so we can have more fun! Ella Ward Expand Rungert Park! I think that Rungert Park in Mooloolah needs to be extended because the area is expanding which is bringing new families with children! I’m sure the government would have funding to help make this request happen! New park equipment would definitely bring more visitors to the Mooloolah community and that means more profit for all the local shops! So, why wouldn’t you just expand Rungert Park? Charlie Hurran
Bubblers for the skate park
I strongly believe that the Mooloolah Skate Park should definitely get bubblers because if you need a drink you will have to go down to the shop to get a water bottle. Bubblers would be great on a hot day at the skate park and you don’t want to get dehydrated. Riley Hackney

Superheroes of Mooloolah
By Lea Parkes Seventeen ‘Super Hero’ themed scarecrows made Mooloolah Valley their home during June. These dynamic new residents were part of a community spirit building competition organised by Mooloolah local Jason Carroll who is the bloke behind the Mooloolah Bush Telegraph Facebook page. With so much effort going into creating the works of art, it can’t have been easy for the judges to choose the winners, however the task was completed and the results announced on July 1. The winning entry was ‘It's Party Time B1 & B2’, second place went to ‘Spiderman Taking a Break’ from Bielby's Hideaway Holiday Apartment on Highland Road. The third prize was won by ‘Moo Man and Battle Cow’ in Paget Street, fourth place was ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi’ from Diamond Valley, fifth place went to ‘Super Moo’ in Paget Street, and sixth place went to ‘Fireman Sam & Friends’ from Highland Road, Eudlo. An additional category had to be added and an ‘Environment Award’ was announced for ‘Groot of the Galaxy’. The winners received some great prizes thanks to the generosity of event sponsors: Mooloolah IGA, Mooloolah Bakery, Mooloolah Beauty Spot, Andy’s Café, Mitre 10, Mooloolah Chinese Kitchen, Delhi Delicious, and Mooloolah Valley Country Club. Following on from the success of this year’s event, Jason is already looking at a theme for next year.

Bubblers for the train station
I strongly believe that the Mooloolah train station must get some water bubblers. I am a 10-year-old boy who has to wait up to one hour for a train after school in the hot sun with no access to a water bubbler. A water bubbler would benefit the whole community and visiting tourists. Seth Romeyn

You Said It Council’s underhanded amendments
On June 6, Sunshine Coast Council advertised proposed amendments to its Planning Scheme. This included to “… address other operational matters to improve the clarity and efficiency of the planning scheme”. Not a mention that it referred to proposed amendments to the Telecommunications Facility Code (TFC). In the Explanatory Memorandum, hidden behind major changes to local plans was the reference to the TFC amendments which again assured people that it was “to improve clarity and interpretation”. However, when one goes to the actions within the draft amendment under 9.3.20, the Performance Outcomes are significantly changed in a way that alters the application of the Code. PO1 has been renamed and “community and other sensitive land uses” has been deleted. Gone are the “500 metres from any child care centre, community care centre, educational establishment”. This rewording is certainly not clarity or interpretation. Why would such vulnerable sections of the community (i.e. children) be excluded from specific outcomes under the Planning Scheme? Where are their rights under the purpose of the TFC covered and protected? Council has retained the PO3 wording which invokes the ‘precautionary principle’ but still accepts outdated ARPANSA documents as being the references. PO3 should also be extended to address other parts of our environment – wildlife and plants. Council should reassess its position with respect to the proposed changes to the TFC as the proposed format does not meet the stated purpose and overall outcomes for the TFC. Jim Straker Reeseville
Re: Is this the norm?
I would just like to add to the letter from my friend Vicki in GC&M News, July 4 edition: As the colleague mentioned (in her letter), I would like to take this opportunity to thank Vicki for writing in, and also thank the many patients, and another dentist, who have expressed their disgust in the way we were treated. Thanks for the support and kindness. After experiencing this overwhelming support from the local community, I’m hopeful this approach will not become the norm. Julie Taylor Glass House Mountains
Re: Hanging baskets
Reading Jon Woodland's letter in GC&M News, July 4 edition about hanging baskets made me think about small towns and villages my wife and I have visited

which, at the right time of year, are greatly enhanced visually by hanging baskets. I do not know the reason for the Kenilworth business owner being told to remove her hanging baskets, but I have written to our councillor telling her I am erecting a large hanging basket at the road frontage of my property. Some time ago, I wrote to Ms McKay saying whilst I was happy for a golf course being established in Maleny I thought it should stand on its own feet and not receive ratepayers’ money, certainly not mine. I read in GC&M News that $225,000 is being donated to the course. I have asked Ms McKay for a proportional refund and, when this arrives, I shall donate it to the Kenilworth business owner towards her hanging baskets. Ian Pollock Witta
Something to be happy about
The western approach to Peachester from Kilcoy and Woodford is beautiful. And so is the delightful drive up the winding range road from Beerwah. As you descend the ‘Four Thousand’ range on the newly paved highway the view is magnificent. You drive past impressive horse training and grazing properties and the interesting restored old cattle dip, along a corridor of native black bean trees and carefully maintained road edges to the village of Peachester. Here you can find a great local cafe with homemade food and a shop and lots of pretty drives around the local area. The history and natural beauty of the Peachester and Crohamhurst region is not as well known as it could be, and there are lots of happy locals who welcome visitors. Doug Benjafield Peachester
Proposed development in Landsborough
Housing development in a rural town should be driven by the needs of the people living in the area. The Sunshine Coast Council could insist that developers engage with the community prior to submitting their application and demonstrate how the community’s articulated needs will be met by their development plan. The proposed development at 37 Maleny Street, Landsborough illustrates this well. The developer has 'his vision for the site', which incorporates 23 units and 10 rooming accommodations, all with the intent to provide 'affordable accommodation'. This mix of housing in one development appears to be the first of its kind in the Hinterland region, and thus could set the tone for the whole Hinterland regarding such developments. The community continues to be strongly opposed to such a development on a defined gateway site, in
SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519
a locality, though zoned medium density, which is predominantly low built form. The developer is seemingly not willing to give the community any idea of his ongoing intentions for the development, which he says he "will be managing as an ongoing concern". Without clear communication this can only continue to fuel the fire of suspicion and mistrust. In order to address the housing affordability crisis, the Council in its Affordability Strategy, 2010-2020, states that a more diverse housing market focussing on smaller, more compact dwellings is needed for low income households and that they should be in activity centres with high access to public transport, employment opportunities, key services and facilities. Is Landsborough, as a rural town without high access at this time, suitable or ready for this type of development? It is so important that the existing community of this small town plays a key role in defining the built character of the Sunshine Coast and be involved in the process with council and developers to work out what their specific housing needs are. This would surely contribute to better relationships and a mutually agreed outcome for all. Diana Michael Landsborough
Did you know......................? with Landsborough Museum 4 Maleny St, Landsborough QLD 4550 The present-day Landsborough Museum was originally the Landsborough Shire Council Chambers. The building was officially opened in 1924 and remained the council chambers until council moved to its new Caloundra site in 1968. Later the Landsborough Historical Society was formed and the building re-opened as the Landsborough Museum on April 3, 1976. The building was heritage-listed in 1997.

Applying for a loan? Improve your chances Are you in the market for a new home? While scouring real estate Websites is exciting, it’s a long road from the dream of home ownership, to actually owning a home. Your first and biggest hurdle is getting a deposit and then having your mortgage approved. While lending requirements may have tightened since the global financial crisis, there are things you can do to put yourself in the best position to get your
mortgage approved. Here are some ideas... 1. Improve your credit rating: Lenders consider your credit score when assessing your mortgage application. Your credit score is calculated by a credit reporting agency and delivered in a credit report. To improve your credit score, make sure that you pay instalments on current loans, as well as your bills and rent on time.
2. Clear your debts: Debts count against you when you are applying for a mortgage, so the less debt you have, the better. 3. Stable employment: When assessing your mortgage application, lenders consider the stability of your income now and into the furure. People who are self-employed usually need to provide tax returns for the last two years. If you are on a salary, you will need the last two payslips as proof of income.
4. Seek Advice: Talk to Teresa Harrison to receive the advice and tools you will need to improve your chances. The more leg work you put in beforehand, the better prepared you’ll be and the greater your chance of success.

Help feed a family this winter
With 15% of the population experiencing food insecurity at some point every year, Foodbank and Woolworths are appealing to Glasshouse Country and Maleny residents to support their national public appeal and help meet the rise in need for food assistance over the winter period. Up until July 24, customers at the Beerwah and Maleny Woolworths can add a $2 Foodbank token donation to their shop, with 100% of funds raised going to Foodbank to deliver more food and groceries at a time of year when families most desperately need it. Foodbank Australia’s CEO Brianna Casey said: “Our Winter Appeal at Woolworths is helping families at a time when it is most needed. “At this time of the year, we have families struggling to make ends meet, with meal-skipping becoming standard practice, particularly for parents. “With 40% of food insecure households’ families with dependent children, it’s crucial that we do more to get food on their dining tables,” she said. Foodbank can provide a meal to an Australian in need for 50c – so each donation of $2 will help provide four nourishing meals.
Mobile phones recycling spots
If you’re not quite sure what to do with your old mobile phone, an environmentally-friendly answer is now available at the Beerwah and Maleny Libraries or at the Recycle Market at Beerwah and Witta. Sunshine Coast Council has teamed up with MobileMuster to offer new mobile recycling collection points at all Sunshine Coast libraries, while MobileMuster black wheelie bins are now located at all recycling facilities. MobileMuster is the only not-for-profit government accredited mobile phone recycling program. All brands and types of mobile phones are accepted, plus their batteries, chargers and accessories. Simply place your mobile phone with its battery in the MobileMuster bin if you want your mobile phone recycled. None of the items collected are re-sold for re-use and all data left on a mobile will be destroyed by MobileMuster during the recycling process. Since the telecommunications industry introduced
its recycling service in 1998, MobileMuster has collected 1,323 tonnes of mobile waste including more than 9.8 million mobile phones and batteries plus more than 574,000kg of accessories which have been kept out of landfill. This free recycling service enables everyone to play their part in keeping old mobiles out of landfill, ensuring they are recycled in a safe, secure and ethical way.

Noticeboard Glasshouse Country Toastmasters
Contributed by Martine Goedhart We recently held our changeover meeting where the new committee was introduced and Barbara Ratcliffe has taken on the role of incoming president. The new team is determined to make the coming Toastmaster year one filled with fun and camaraderie. If you would like to be a part of a great group of people supporting you in gaining confidence bringing your message across, join us for a meeting. We meet every second and fourth Thursday of the month in the Church on the Rise, Beerwah Parade, Beerwah at 9am for a 9.15am start. The next meeting will be on Thursday July 26. We would love to welcome you to join our group. Like to know more? Give me a call on 5496 9855 or email me at martine@goedhart.com.au.
New committee: Ian Hope, Martine Goedhart, Barbara Ratcliffe, Esther Frizzo, Peter Agapow and Charlotte Herring
From the churches Ever tasted something which reminded you of a meal with friends from years ago? Or smelt someone’s perfume or aftershave that reminded you of someone? Anything can trigger a memory – a word, a sighting, music. Sometimes these memories are pleasurable but sometimes they might hold great pain of sadness or even guilt or shame. We cannot always control what memories come to mind. Those negative and painful memories – what are we to do with them? We can try to bury them so we never have to face them, but interestingly we can never seem to bury them deep enough. They always seem to rear their heads at some stage. These memories that we might have never resolved or dealt with can cause our conscience to suffer, they can cause our relationships with others to suffer and can also stand in the way of our relationship with God. The good news is that we don’t have to try to suppress or to deny these memories, as there is another way.
Seniors help Neighbourhood Centre
The Over 50s’ Group of the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church recently held one of their fellowship lunches and decided to donate money towards a local volunteer organisation. They raised $120 to support the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. Charles Russell, on behalf of the church, presented the cheque to the centre’s treasurer, Doug Pullen (pictured left). The Adventist Church acknowledges the important work that volunteers do in meeting the needs of the local community. Scottish Country Dancing is alive and well in Maleny on Monday nights at the Presbyterian Church Hall, Cedar Street, from 7pm to 9pm. An ideal activity for cool, winter nights, this form of dance brings you fun, fitness and fellowship. Dancing is performed in sets so you do not need a partner and the first night is free. Just bring your soft shoes and come along or call 5445 7845, 0420 977 170 or 0429 654 033. Sacred Heart Spiritual Church’s Expo will be held on August 25 at the Beerwah Community Hall (next to the Beerwah Library) from 10am-5pm. It will include a wide range of psychic modalities, tarot cards, mediumship, palmistry, graphology and and there will be a variety of stalls selling crystals, crystal jewellery and candles.
Catherine Solomon Uniting Church Maleny Christians believe that when we take these thoughts and feelings to God we are heard and we are loved. In naming and handing what’s happened over to Jesus Christ, we receive freedom from the burden and when we remember next time it won’t hurt as much. God knows what’s happened but God allows for you to choose to share and name it in your time. As you remember those painful memories, take courage and ask God’s Spirit to release you from the pain and then to fill your mind and heart with things that are good, receiving an overwhelming peace. “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the centre of your life.” Philippians 4:6-7 (The Message).

The Boomerang Bags Beerwah group will hold a monthly Sewing Bee on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the CWA Beerwah Hall, beginning on Tuesday July 24 from 9am to noon and sewing skills are not essential. In the Garden Forest ecology course on again
Hinterland Bush Links will run the 2018 Subtropical Forests Ecology Course at Bellthorpe over two weekends in early September. This four-day course is for anyone interested in our local ecology. Experts will guide you through the nature of the rocks and soils in the landscape, and why they support different vegetation types and wildlife communities. The course will equip landholders to restore bush and connect it to remnant habitat in the wider landscape. If you own or manage land for conservation, this course will give you a strong foundation for planning the best way to care for it. But it’s also for those who just love to get out in the bush. The course runs September 1-2 and September 15-16. If you would like an information pack, contact Susie Duncan on wilderness@hotkey.net.au or phone 5429 6622.
Guarding Your Plants With Spencer and Karen Shaw
You may have noticed Pink Coreflute Guards on revegetation projects such as the Maleny Community Precinct and Skippy Park at Beerwah – to name a couple. These tree guards are simply the best when it comes to protecting your planted stock from weather extremes, nibbling fauna and accidental damage during weed control. The quality coreflute material and seasoned hardwood stakes (supplied by a SE QLD timber mill) make for an effective, long lasting product. Planting is an investment that we often under value, but we are investing our time in plants that are sometimes rare and hard to get hold of, so it really is worth using tree guards to ensure we reap the benefits of our planting projects, be they big or small! A great mulch product that we stock are Palm-Fibre Mulch Mats. They are durable and swell to approximately 1-2cm thick when installed. These in combination with the Pink Coreflute Guards make for a great package to establish tubestock whether that be for revegetation or in your garden. Forest Heart is your local supplier for Pink Coreflute Guards, Fibre Mulch Mats and of course a great range of local native plants for your revegetation and garden.

Winter weed watch
With winter here, it’s time to get on top of the winter weeds which have been stealthily multiplying in your lawns. And with the day length increasing, the winter weeds will grow faster and stronger than your turf grasses will. So there's no time to lose. The main offenders are bindii, cats ear (or flatweed), tropical chickweed, green and silverleaf desmodiums, white clover and red caustic weeds. Those with couch grass lawns will have noticed them thinning out a bit. This is normal for couch in winter, but it does leave space for the winter weeds to expand. Red Caustic Weed To give your grass a fighting chance there’s a few simple things you can do now before the winter weeds really start to take over. Firstly, lighten your soil. It's probably a little compacted from being walked or driven on over the summer months. Compacted soil has less air pockets and air in your soil is vital for good healthy grass roots. You can use a specialised soil aeration gadget which can be pretty cheaply hired from a hire shop, or you can use a bit of elbow grease and Cats Ear get to work with your garden fork - jab it in, lever it a little, then repeat across your whole lawn. At this point you might like to pick up a trailer load of sand and spread this thinly across your lawn and then lightly rake it in. The sand will make it into the gaps you’ve created which will really help to improve the structure of your soil. Fertilise with a slow release lawn fertiliser and water it in well. This will encourage grass roof growth as the days lengthen. Do some hand weeding to remove the winter weeds, allowing the grass to once again gain the upper hand. If the weeds are too far gone to hand weed, you may need to resort to a lawn weed herbicide. If you're not sure which is best for your grass type, best to ask for the advice from someone at the local hardware or produce store. Asthma Plant If you’re mowing regularly, raise the mower height to let the grass grow a little longer. This will give them more leaf area to photosynthesise and make their own energy, that they need to grow. The exception to the rule is bindii, which you won't see a lot of yet as it's just at the start of its growth season. But the little prickle seeds have germinated and are just sitting there waiting to take off. You've got about another month before they change into painful prickly land mines. Tackling them when they are partly grown is easiest if you want to go with hand removal. But if the problem is too big, you will need to resort to a bindii herbicide. If you leave it too late and they start to form their prickles, then it's too late to use a herbicide as the bindii will put all its remaining energy into maturing the prickles. In this case, you're best off going back to hand removing them. Treat it as a form of horticultural meditation on a Saturday afternoon.

The Queensland Government has introduced new laws to promote the responsible breeding of dogs. These new laws relate to dogs and puppies born after May 26, 2017. Runners-up with 13 ends won were Dennis Hume, Jack Timm and Di Hume. The mystery prize went to Alf Faulkner, Noelene Annakin and John Annakin. The jackpot number drawn was + 25. Thursday, July 12: Social – winners of the day were Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson on 65 points and the runners-up were Darryl Goschnick and Darryl Kull on 63 points. The lucky draw went to Ernie Sherwood and Len Skerry. Saturday, July 14: Men Pennant Round 2 – Division 2 vs Solander Lake (home), not a good weekend for any of our men pennant sides. Division 4 vs Solander Lake (home), early on Glasshouse was in the lead only to go down in the end losing both rinks 32-45. Next week is away to Narangba. Division 5 vs Donnybrook (away), it is never are easy game at Donnybrook with both our teams losing their rinks to go down 26-48. Next week is the first home game against Bongaree. Social – a good turnout for Saturday social with 12 players enjoying a game of pairs, Lyn Griffiths and Russell Walmsley won the day with the highest score of 14. Our AGM will be held on Saturday, September 8 from 10am at Club Glass House. It would be good if we could get some more people who are willing to help out. Nomination forms are available at the bowls club.
Contributed by Graeme Glover Our club championships continue and in the next edition a preview of the triples final will appear. Congratulations to Doug, Relma and John on winning our Tuesday triples with 2 wins plus 16. Doug showed great touch making Skip John a happy bowler. Well done all. No lucky jackpot winners. We all had a Wednesday night off to recharge our batteries and watch the State of Origin. Thanks to Ray, Miles, Jim and Graeme who travelled to play for the club at Kilcoy. This was another great day enjoyed by all. Next week we travel to Woodford. Any members interested in travelling to our away games please put your name on the nomination board. Friday Scroungers main man Miles decided on a different approach as a preview to the next competition. He and his Scroungers mate Doug did a great job with the double up scoring system, all to provide a bit more fun for our members. Well done, Miles and Doug. The format certainly suited our club numbers man, Brett G who had a resounding win. Well done. The second Scroungers competition gets underway where handicaps have no limit other than your form. Come and join in, everyone gets a game at MBC.

Masters AFL returns to Glasshouse Contributed by Craig Bales The Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Masters Team (Over 35’s) finally play their first home game at the Landsborough Sports Complex on Saturday, July 21 at 3pm. The team will be keen to put in a strong performance against Souths at home as they have been travelling for most of the season so far. John Sugg is in a purple patch of form after getting over a nasty ingrown toenail and is worth coming to watch on his own! Why not come down and see yesterday’s local heroes relive their glory days. The bar will also be open. The purpose of ‘Masters Footy’ is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of the senior competitions. The motto of the Masters Footy is ‘Footy for Fun, Fitness and Friendship’. There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Master’s attract all sizes, shapes and playing abilities from complete newbies to ex-AFL players. Last year the youngest player was 32 and our oldest 60! The season is a 12 game fixture, played fortnightly. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment rather than premierships and flags. At the end of each season there is a national carnival which will be held on the Gold Coast, where players from across the state represent Queensland against all the other states and territories. Any Interested players can contact Craig Bales at 0414 225 329 or Craig.Bales@Quantum.com

Your Stars ARIES March 21 – April 20 There is a powerful influence in your affairs regarding personal improvements within your daily routine. Also, it is a week that you will have fun with your pet, who has captured your heart. A very creative week if you are involved with any form of craft affairs. A good run now for your competitive spirit. Pleasurable partnership sharing. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Important relationships are activated! This is a time for a most fortunate expansive, generous and rewarding week. People met this week will be worth knowing, and worth working with. Material world matters claim your curious attention and provide some answers. The Sun’s entry into Leo launches a new domestic cycle. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 Snap morning decisions go well with the snap frosts on the ground! Wishful thinking and romantic fantasies become welcome distractions, however keep your ego under control. Be aware that Mercury turns retrograde on the 26th and that means you have to double check your local travel plans. Sudden celebrations take place at your home or office. CANCER June 24 – July 22 You may be thinking of redoing your image with the ideas that came up from the last Solar Eclipse. Venus adds to Jupiter’s energy and, together with Neptune, this means skin treatments and massages would be beneficial. The position of the quarter Moon could call for you to adjust any recent relationship and partnership decision.
Week Beginning 18/07/18
Q: You have a basket with 20 apples. You have 20 hungry children. Every child should get an apple but one apple should remain in the basket. How do you do that? A: You give 19 children one apple each and to the last one you give the basket containing the last apple. Q: How much earth lies in a hole, three feet deep and three feet wide? A: None. It wouldn’t be a hole anymore if there were earth in it.

LEO July 23 – August 22 The Sun enters Leo on the 22nd with a lovely aspect to Venus and Jupiter. So this week the world is your own personal oyster! You will look and feel your best and express yourself with an attractive confidence to which others will respond. You feel inspired at home and make a good corner to nest in, for an office, a media room, or for reading. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The planet Venus meets up with indulgent Jupiter and the inspiration of Neptune. All this adds into a perfect week providing there is no sliding into fussiness, which would stand in the way of progress. You will enjoy moving ahead with plans that are a little bit ambitious, but nicely expansive. Don’t react too quickly to an indecisive client. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 As the planet Jupiter comes up to sextile Venus this week, and the Sun enters the sign of Leo, you should find pleasures, joy and closeness are the current trends. Relax with friends, enjoy group activities, and pursue your goals. Resources may still be an issue but this week there are still many productive outlets. Take it easy on yourself. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You can successfully complete tasks that showcase your abilities. However, the influence of Uranus can bring an unexpected tumble in a partnership, alliance or a career goal. That would be fixed up by the Lunar Eclipse at month’s end. You may consider making a move or focusing on a big change. Your social life receives a boost.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 There may be one or two mornings that you feel like getting up with the morning birds. So, for a few early mornings you will be chirping joyfully! Some friends are talking about things behind the scenes that may be confidential. They work to your advantage. Be very aware of your rose-coloured glasses that manifest as an infatuation. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The last New Moon Solar Eclipse was a power-house and played out in opposition to your own sign. Normally, being an earth sign, Capricorn is very attuned to being practical regarding career and security. However, that last eclipse sees a six month energy field in the sign of Cancer and that indicates you are to be more home and family aware. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 As Venus moves through the sign of Virgo you will probably need to review your bank accounts, together with anything you may want to achieve with your partner. Venus in concert to Uranus, which rules your sign, leads you to a new level of mutual understanding. Perhaps there is someone new that has an instant rapport. Nice celebrations now! PISCES February 20 – March 20 There is a clever breakaway from any rose-coloured glasses under a Neptune influence. Neptune rules your sign. Two planets, namely Saturn and Pluto, are bringing reality to your life now and together with your inspiration towards future goals, your home life becomes more rewarding. Self-improvement efforts shine out everywhere.

Dental Excel.... Dr Shirly Atia Dr Shirly Atia completed her Dental Hygiene Degree in Canada and worked as a dental hygienist for seven years before completing a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University in Cairns. She has completed her general practice residency in Queensland Health providing dental care to indigenous communities.
Dr Atia is extremely passionate about preventive dentistry but enjoys all areas of dentistry including fillings, crown and bridge, esthetic dentistry and root canals. Shirly ensures all her patients receive the best possible treatment and is committed to providing high quality dentistry in a warm, gentle and welcoming environment.
Implants
Orthodontics
David and Finbarr have a great interest in the placing and restoring of dental implants and are constantly undergoing continuing education in the field. They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients. Implants can be used to restore function or cosmetics by filling gaps with implant crowns and bridges or to restrain those dentures which have a mind of their own.
Children in the developmental stages of their dentition are best served by being referred to a specialist orthodontist to guide them to a good result both functionally and aesthetically. However, there are many adult patients and older teenagers who are left with crooked or crowded front teeth who can benefit from the new technology of new orthodontic treatments such as FASTBRACES and INMAN ALIGNER. Raj and Finbarr, in suitable patients, are achieving excellent transformations. A consultation is free and will enable you to explore your options if you have concerns in this area.
Dentures
Bleaching
Dental Excel dentists still enjoy providing dentures, either partial or full, and aim to achieve both a good functional result but also dentures that provide as cosmetically pleasing a result for patients as possible. The dentist works in harmony with a very experienced technician so that between them they can achieve the best result. The correct extension and occlusal balance is of paramount importance for dentures to be wearable and the former is singularly missing in many dentures. Implants, where bone permits, can be life changing when used to stabilise and retain either partial or full dentures but must be viewed as a plus factor and not a substitute for well-constructed dentures. Fixed dentures are also now an alternative for many people.
Both home kit bleaching and in surgery ZOOM Tooth Whitening are available at Dental Excel.
Children Dental Excel welcomes our younger clients and also supports the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme for eligible 2-17 year olds. A dedicated child play area for littlies has recently been added in our Beerwah clinic.
Cosmetic
Payment Plan
For those patients who wish to improve the cosmetics of their smile, all options such as composite veneers and porcelain veneers in association with general bleaching, are available as well as cosmetic crowns where required. SNAP ON SMILES is a really innovative new cosmetic product which for many people is a very easy way of achieving a great smile without major dental work and can both cover existing teeth and fill gaps present. This may be a great short or long-term solution for many people.
Here at Dental Excel we understand that there are so many expenses in modern life which tend to push taking care of that precious dental health well down the list, yet healthy and attractive teeth are a great asset to us all and regular care very often prevents big problems down the line. Therefore, we have recently introduced a ‘NO INTEREST EVER’ payment plan so that patients can have the treatment they need now and do not have to wait, and then pay for the treatment in instalments after (conditions apply). For dental implants / orthodontics / cosmetics we offer a free patient assessment.
