I

n last week’s edition I wrote a rather lengthy ‘editor’s response’ to a letter letting us know that because of a decision to take (quite a lot) of election advertising from our ex Federal Member that from here on GCNews was deemed only suitable for the recycling bin. Well I have to say the letter and my response did generate quite a lot of comments, feedback, letters, and emails. While it was absolutely lovely to get so much positive feedback – I was just as pleased with the people who said – ahh I just didn’t understand how the newspaper works – thanks for the explanation.

Over the years quite a few people have suggested that we should enter ‘Business Achievement’ awards and we have entered and won some awards through the Queensland Rural Press award which has been nice. However a couple of the outcomes from last week’s edition, which I found more rewarding, is how proud locals are of ‘our’ newspaper. Yep we might own the business – but the newspaper belongs to our community which is just the way it should be. 4 mountains in 1 day Madeline Mullet a 15-year-old student at Beerwah high School is setting herself one very tall challenge on October 12, to climb four mountains in one day. She has been motivated to undertake this task as a fundraiser to help the students at the School of St Jude in Tanzania build a new science block. The mission of the school is to help pull disadvantaged kids out of poverty and into education, 1,500 students attend, and 1,000 of these students board there. Madeline, who will be travelling to the school in December, said she’s always been inspired to do something like this that will help change people’s lives.

“I am asking people to either make a donation or to sponsor my climbs, I will start at Wildhorse Mountain at 6.00am and will then continue on to Mt Beerburrum, Mt Tibrogargan and finish with Ngun Ngun,” she said. You can read more about the project on www. globalimmersion.com.au website and check out previous groups trips to the school to see what they did. “Anyone is welcome to join me for one or all mountains, however you will need to organise your own transport and be responsible for your own safety,” Madeline said. Back in May we brought you a story about Glass House Mountains local Peter Pratt who shared how he changed his lifestyle by breaking his sugar addition. He is no longer a type 2 diabetic. Peter developed a free three month program based on his experience and medical research, and has now shared it twice with different groups of The group individuals. The second group, who have just finished the program, celebrated their ‘new beginnings’ on the first day of spring. As a part of their celebrations a three course meal was served up made from grown whole foods with no processed foods at all. Peter said the results from this group have been stunning. “Everyone has had a total mind shift and are now completely off all processed foods. Individuals have seen dramatic change to blood sugar levels, and not only have they made major physical changes, the participants are feeling fantastic and their approach to life is more positive,” he said. One of the participants, Cheryl Bryers was very impressed with the program. “Have you ever wanted to make a lifestyle change and just could not negotiate the mine field of conflicting information out there?” she said. “This 12 week program with Peter Pratt from the Diabteic Health Clinic will show you exactly how to manage this change to a healthy lifestyle in a way that you will never go back!"

celebrating their new beginnings Another participant Patricia Winton said she never thought it possible to just consume juice for 30 days and enjoy it. “The results have been amazing, my weight is down by 11kg, sugars are down, and blood pressure is down also. I am so pleased that I had the opportunity to do this course,” she said. Peter is quick to point out that it’s important to stress that the program doesn’t replace a doctor. “Participants are encouraged to see their doctor before starting the program and for monitoring along the way,” he said. Peter is about to start another program and is keen to find another group of locals suffering from Type 2 diabetes that would like to participate. “The program was run at the Glass House Mountains Lutheran Church, thanks to them for providing the venue free of charge,” Peter said. Residents see red over green waste

by Greg Brown

On top of dramatically increasing the fees for dumping green waste at local refuse centres, Sunshine Coast Council recently voted to impose another green waste cost onto ratepayers – whether they want it or not.

The Mayor’s claim that the extra bin was a recommendation from the Council’s Waste Minimisation Strategy is not quite the case.

Sunshine Coast Council have announced plans for mandatory green waste bins adding a further $60.00 onto their already burgeoning rates bill. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the new system, which he says was a recommendation of the Waste Minimisation Strategy 2009-2014, would enable residents to dispose of organic garden waste from around their homes in a convenient and cost-effective way. “From July next year, residents will be able to put their garden waste in a lime-lidded wheelie bin and have it collected from their kerbsides every fortnight,” he said. Mayor Jamieson cites the need to divert green waste from landfill in an effort to extend the lifespan of those existing facilities. “It will extend existing landfill life by up to two years, reduce our carbon emissions, avoid future landfill levies that apply in other states and enhance our efforts to be Australia’s most sustainable region.” This news came as a surprise to many locals, who had no idea that the decision was made in Council. In fact, the decision was made behind locked doors in a closed confidential session of Council.

The Mayor’s comments may have stemmed from a suggestion included in a background report created when they were drafting the Waste Minimisation Strategy back in 2009.

Nowhere in the strategy is there a specific action item recommending that Council will implement a mandatory green waste bin collection.

This means the report and subsequent Councillor discussions will never be made known to the public. It should be noted here that our two local Councillors – Rick Baberowski and Jenny McKay voted against the motion (refer to the Elected Representative page in this edition). When the issue was put to the people via the GCNews Facebook site, there wasn’t a lot of praise for the announcement.

“It is not fair to the people that neither garden or have any kind of green waste, we should have the choice!” “...another money maker for council...” “What happened to the promise our rates would be cheaper after amalgamation?” “They are not getting any of ours it's too valuable. What the chooks and ducks don't get, goes to the compost.”

Horse Riding @ Rossi’s

The document reported some community support for a green waste bin, with two resulting recommendations being the provision of an optional garden waste bin at a subsidised rate to any residents who request it; or a fortnightly garden waste bin for $30.00 a year. As there is already an optional green waste collection service well and truly established on the coast, we asked Council if they undertook any further investigation into the likely community acceptance or usage rates for a mandatory service. Unfortunately, the reply received from Council did not answer this question. The light at the end of the tunnel is that, at this Thursday’s general Council meeting, and as a direct result of significant community outrage, a rescission motion will be tabled to take back the resolution. Maybe next time, Council will at least do some basic consultation before just imposing their will on ratepayers.

Time to go

Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help.

For the business owners of Gone Bonkers, Beerwah Shoes and the Garden Terrace Coffee Lounge, Friday the 13th was a sad day for them – they received the news they had two weeks to close their shops and to vacate their premises by October 1.

It is estimated that approximately 85% of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis. The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today, or visit www.adjusttolife. com.au Beerwah 5494 0499 or Maroochydore 5443 4545

Business feature

For the past five years, the business owners have known that this was coming, however they were under the impression that they would receive six week’s notice as a courtesy. Each of the businesses has been operating from their premises next door to the SUPA IGA for the past 17 years, so it is with much sadness that the business owners will say farewell to their loyal customers. Pim from Gone Bonkers and Cristina from Beerwah Shoes said they are keeping their options open for the future of their businesses, however in the short term they will need to clear as much of their stock as they can – both businesses are holding 30% off sales. Anne and Ross from Garden Terrace said it will be really sad saying good bye to all their regulars. Over the years many of our customers come in so often that they are like family and we hope that they come in before we leave so we can say thanks for all their support and good-bye in person, they said. with Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck Computer Scams Fraud through computers and mobile phones has become a massive problem world wide. Many people fall victim to these scams simply by providing basic personal information to the predators. If you’re slightly suspicious about the offer or the lottery win, terminate all communication with these people. The old saying ‘if it seems too good to be true it probably is’ is probably correct. Tragically, our older community members are often the victims. Our younger community should discuss this type of scam with parents and friends in the event they receive a similar message. The home page of the QPS website is an interesting read. It contains many tips on personal safety, statistics relevant to your local area and the latest scams on the internet. Good work Recently local Police Officers located offenders on the Red Road overpass of the Bruce Highway throwing water bombs at passing vehicles; a ridiculous act of stupidity by the offenders. Several serious incidents were narrowly avoided. Persistence paid off when Police intercepted the suspects with buckets of water and balloons in a vehicle. A couple of young locals were located in the Beerwah CBD by Police investigating a recent increase of unlawful entry into motor vehicle complaints. Four offences were cleared.

This is one of the largest Divisions in the Police District and is serviced by 22 Police Officers 24 hours a day. For the month of August there were six break and enters one of which was solved. Unlawful entry into motor vehicles still remains a concern with 11 offences reported, five of which were solved. The mountain car parks are still a hot spot for this offence. If you have visitors coming for the weekend please warn them to lock their vehicles and leave NO valuables in them at the car parks. Traffic Crashes A real concern in our area. There were 10 ‘no injuries accidents’, six ‘injury accidents’ and sadly 1 ‘fatal’ accident. Police will be out in force with a view to reducing this tragic statistic. Your assistance is appreciated. Festival key to sports club’s future By Lea Parkes The land for the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club was donated by the Lands Department way back in 1921 and since that time it has been a venue for all types of local sporting events including tennis, cricket and even horse racing. Club President Ken Fullerton (Senior) said in the early days, the facilities were pretty basic. Players would have put their gear on in the ‘thunderboxes’ which is a long way from the hot and cold showers in the change rooms that players expect today. Over the years members of the local Glass House

Mountains community worked hard to create high quality playing fields, and a modern club house with an excellent function facility, that are a real asset and the envy of many other townships. Sports Club Manager Kylie Cherry said however these days it has become a bigger challenge to raise the funds required to maintain the facilities and pay the on-going running costs. Sadly many clubs in South East Queensland have been forced to close their doors. “Plenty of locals would be surprised at just how much it cost to run the club – keeping the playing fields at our current high standards alone costs $100,000 a year, the electricity costs run into thousands each month, ongoing maintenance of the buildings, air conditioning, car parking, and gardens as well as staff wages just keep growing each year,” Kylie said. “Years ago volunteers were the backbone of clubs like ours, but these days it is so much more complex with red tape requirements and there are less people keen to volunteer their time,” Ken added. “Our Club’s Management Committee is keen to secure our club’s future, so when Paul the festival co-ordinator presented a detailed proposal for an annual Music Festival, we were keen to see the details of how it would all come together. “It was clear that there had been plenty of good solid planning which would ensure the event will run smoothly, the performance area will be completely fenced, there will be full security throughout the event with one gate in and out, ticket numbers will be fixed, and transport has

The orignal clubhouse been organised from outside the area to reduce parking requirements,” Ken said. “These days, Music Festivals are so popular and we know that the locals are going to love having the chance to have a professional event of this type right in our backyard – no doubt it will also draw music lovers from further afield,” Kylie added. “We know that for this year’s event we will be relying on plenty of support from locals, but as an annual event we know it will attract people from outside of the area – meaning that into the future, money from outside of the area will be benefiting our community,” Ken said. So this year the club are really calling out to the local community to support this event. Whether it's by attending the event, or selling tickets, becoming a sponsor, or volunteering on the day – the hard work this year is going to pay long term dividends for our community. If you are interested in getting involved please contact Kylie Cherry at the club on glassmt@ blue1000.com.au and check out the festival ad on page 27 to find out more details and ticket information.

Wild dogs in the spotlight The wool producing industry is launching a draft national wild dog action plan in an effort to improve the control of wild dogs across Australia. The draft plan seeks to improve national and state coordination and promote best practice standards across the varying state and regional approaches now in place. Its aim is to promote and support community-driven action for landscape-scale wild dog management. WoolProducers Australia President, Geoff Power, said the plan would guide implementation of a nationally-agreed framework focussing on a strategic and risk-based approach to wild dog management. “It will have an emphasis on humane, safe and effective management techniques and the mitigation of the impacts of wild dogs at appropriate scales,” Mr Power said. “The stakeholders involved hope the final plan can be used as a model to facilitate action against other pests such as foxes, pigs and rabbits – all of which have also proven to cause devastating damage to conservation and production.” The plan can be viewed on the WoolProducers Australia website – www.woolproducers.com.au/ national-wild-dogs-action-plan/ – with feedback being accepted up to the close of business on October 25. Locally, wild dogs are back on the radar, as their breeding cycle has started meaning that males are actively moving about the landscape protecting their territory and searching for breeding females.

Sunshine Coast Council is working with local landholders to control the wild dog populations in the Glasshouse Country region, by implementing cooperative 1080 baiting programs. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said Bio-security Queensland and Sunshine Coast Council are supporting more than 20 local area coordinating groups across the Sunshine Coast to undertake a proactive wild dog baiting program. “Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this wild dog baiting program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility,” Cr McKay said. “The baiting program is offered to eligible local area coordination groups at least twice a year to assist landholders with the management of wild dogs. “The upcoming program will run from September 16 to October 25 across more than 90 private residential properties along with council and state government land in mostly hinterland areas from Beerburrum to Kin Kin.” Cr McKay said there were further methods landowners should take to reduce the impact of wild dogs and council officers were available to assist with education and action. “Council officers are also available to provide site assessments and to train landholders in proactive and reactive trapping. “Council was recently awarded a $75 000 grant from Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry for wild dog management. The grant will be used to combat wild dogs by supporting the community through provision of training, trapping and other support mechanisms.”

It’s your water … have your say Seqwater is responsible for providing a secure and reliable water supply to almost three million people across South-East Queensland, including our own Ewen Maddock Dam. Up to two million people a year visit their recreational facilities across Queensland for anything from picnics, camping and fishing, to weddings and sporting events. Seqwater is undertaking a Recreation Review to explore the recreational opportunities in and around its lakes to deliver a suite of management plans. In September, the focus will be turned onto Ewen Maddock Dam at Glenview and Baroon Pocket Dam, on the way to Maleny. Seqwater will be releasing discussion papers and surveys on these two waterbodies on September 18, identifying the current activities, past feedback and any constraints associated with each lake. An information booth will be set up in front of the Landsborough newsagents on Saturday, September 21 from 11.30am to 1.00pm. A more in-depth workshop is planned for October 12 to give everyone the opportunity to directly participate. The location of the workshop is yet to be determined, however Seqwater are asking people to register their interest on the website www. yourseqwater.com.au/projects/Lake-BaroonEwen-Maddock One local group who welcome the opportunity is the Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc group. www.gcnews.com.au

It’s your water!

Have your say... Seqwater is undertaking a review of the recreation facilities at Lake Baroon & Ewen Maddock Dam. Although they are primarily involved in stocking the dam with native fish, group member Steve Evans says that they also have a vested interest in the wider recreational use and management of the waterway. “Canoeing and kayaking, family activities (picnics, swimming, sailing, etc), and foreshore access for activities such as bush walking and bird watching are all important. Consequently our responses to the consultation, whilst focused on our primary aims of recreational fishing, have also reflected these other pursuits,” Steve said. “The group is also conscious of the need to preserve the ecology in these dams so has also responded in support of controlling noxious weeds, particularly in Ewen Maddock Dam, controlling exotic and pest fauna such as Tilapia and Cane Toads, and preserving and protecting endangered native wildlife such as Mary River Cod. “However, the group is not supportive of powerboats, jet skis or other motorised craft being used on either dam,” he said.

We encourage you to have your say about recreation opportunities around the lakes. Discussion Papers for each lake will be available online from 18 September and at your local ward or council office. We invite you to attend an information session where you can ask questions, get additional information on the review process and register for a workshop on these lakes. Saturday 21 September

Local support for Legacy

Our local Legacy Laurel ladies recently got behind Legacy Week fundraising activities and Club Glass House were pleased to be able to support their efforts by donating just over $200.00. Club Glass House Manager Sharon Bochow said Mary Southern the Legacy Laurel Club President was so loyal to the cause that she makes homemade jam at her own expense, then sells the bottles for a donation to Legacy. “Some of our members are so touched by her efforts they have started bringing her in oranges and buying bags of sugar to help with the personal cost to herself. “Our club committee does whatever it can to help these lovely ladies who have chosen Club Glass House as their home base,” Sharon said. Mary Southern of the Legacy Laurel Club was presented with a cheque from Club Glass House President Denis Steer

The Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters

Contributed by Judi Thompson We have arranged to meet once a month at the Landsborough Historical Museum. The first meeting will be Sunday, September 29 from 10.00am – 2.00pm during normal Museum hours (meeting dates for November and December will be announced later.) Meeting at the museum will not only serve to reinforce this craft's historic links in Australia, but will also ensure that members from both Rug Groups have an opportunity to come together as a single group to work on projects. Museum visitors are welcome to stop by this ‘living history’ exhibit to learn more about Australia's ‘lost’ traditional rughooking craft. Be sure to watch for the Sunshine Coast Rug Crafters stall outside the Landsborough Historical Museum on William Landsborough Day (October 19) during the Glasshouse Country Festival, where the group will demonstrate the craft and answer questions. Solar power – with power bills rising, now is the time to invest. Here’s how we can help… The Hall family at Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains has been involved non-stop in the solar industry since 1989. Twenty-four years ago they first set up their solar business and showroom in the Wide Bay area. The business has continued to expand and grow ever since, first locally in Mooloolah, then Glass House Mountains in 2002. Ian and Judy started the business known as Solar Panel Xpress, which grew too large for the Glass House premises and they moved to Caboolture, where they operated the largest 12volt showroom in Queensland successsfully for many years. After selling their Caboolure store in 2009, Ian and Judy returned to Glass House and they now operate a smaller husband and wife operation for the locals - 13004solar. Ian, with his 24 years of experience in the solar industry will give it to you in plain language, informative and accurate. Experience counts - call in to have a chat and ask as many questions as you like, with no pressure

to buy. If you buy a solar system from 13004solar or if you wish to add to your exisiting system it will be because you want to do business with Ian and Judy. If you prefer to see what you are buying first, call in and see the panels on display as well as the inverters for yourself. There are different models including a 'smick' black frame panel – these look stunning on a dark roof. Blue Sun and BYD panels are proven performers and the German or Italian inverters are market leaders thoughout the world. Solar is a very smart investment at the moment - produce your own power so you can have free electricity and no more bills. Now that power prices are rising, some people will need to add to their solar system to stay in credit, due to the new price structure. This is the time to add to your exisiting system. Government subsidies are still in place, you can still receive a Government rebate when installing solar.

Business feature

Ian and Judy Hall The question the solar industry is asking is “will Mr Abbot continue to give the subsidy for the householder to install a solar system.”

Electricity charges now 21% higher than last quarter Located on Steve Irwin Way Glass House Mountains

As local homeowners receive their current power bills they will get a shock to see they are approximately $60 - $100 dearer than the last bill, and that is just the beginning. The solar industry has been told that electricity retail prices are expected to rise by about 8% per year until at least 2016. So how can YOU prepare for these continual prices increases? Just like the water shortage days – USE LESS POWER. Consider placing a fine on your kids if they leave a light, TV or computer on as they leave their room. Consider a DC pool pump or operating your pool the MINIMUM number of hours to maintain the PH balance. OR Add more solar panels to your existing solar system OR Buy a small roof top solar system Best of all, buy a solar system from your LOCAL supplier for NO more than you would pay from someone from OUT OF TOWN! JUST ASK THE LOCALS who have already - how quickly they get attention if they need it. Most times it is the same day, because LOCAL electricians are working in the LOCAL area. Best performing panels: - The best performing panels in QLD are designed for Queensland conditions (higher temperatures) these are the Blue Sun Group and the Warren Buffet partnered BYD panels. Your favourite local electrician sells these, just phone him or call in and see the panels at 13004solar at Glass House, Steve Irwin Way.

Who is your favorite electrician? LOCAL

electricians and resellers who are using the Blue Sun and BYD panels are Tony Kerr from ADK electrician, Geoff Keast, from Keast Electrical, Gary Josland from Josland Electrical, Dwayne Mincher From Instyle Electrical, Dave from McDonald Electrical Mooloolah, Pat at Bi-Rite – Maleny, Des from Cantley Electrical and Ian at 13004solar at Glass House. These are the locals who live and work in your area, so they are here to serve the LOCALS, with a quick response. Your LOCAL electrician’s workmanship is guaranteed and so too are the solar panels, your LOCAL man has his reputation to maintain and he will be there if you need him for advice or service. How do you access service from someone interstate? Hot weather on the way. ALL solar panels reduce their output (generate less electricity on the hotter days) but, Blue Sun are aware of this and are the only panel in Australia which uses an equatorial grade EVA…..What does this mean? EVA allows for the operation of much higher temperatures than most other panels. 3 degrees Celsius is quite a significant variation for the hotter days. So when the others slow down due to the hotter temperatures, Blue Sun is still powering on and you are generating extra electricity because of this technology.

Don’t buy just ANY solar system if you want 37 years FREE ELECTRICITY Phone 1300 4 76527 Cnr Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains Intersection www.gcnews.com.au

Morning tea at Ewen Maddock Dam Contributed by Jenny Morris Recently 18 of our Glasshouse Country View Club ladies braved the very windy and cool weather and met at Ewen Maddock Dam. A hot cuppa and some delicious morsels to munch on was the first priority, and then Michael Fiechtner from SEQ Water gave us a very informative talk about the dam and surrounding water grid. Pat Paddick was our raffle winner and then Michael handed out brochures and answered our questions. Janet then presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation and a small gift. After packing up, we all went for a walk along the boardwalk before heading home. Thanks Janet for organising our speaker and setting up our tables with cute blue checked cloths. Our next outing on October 2 will be a ‘pretend’ High Tea at Poppies Bed and Breakfast at Mooloolah. If you wish to go to this outing please ring Elaine on 5493 3935. Three of our members attended the National View

Convention held at Jupiter’s on the Gold Coast from September 13 to September 15. Women added their voices to debate matters of national concern and heard from notable Australian women. View is a valued part of the Smith Family, committed to working with disadvantaged Australian children to transform their lives through education. Since 1960 there are more than 19,600 members from 350 clubs, contributing more than 50,000 hours of volunteering and raising more than $1 for the Smith Family every year. If you wish to join our club please ring Margaret on 5435 2172.

This will only make the fire burn hotter and faster... Instead: STOP immediately where you are. Drop quickly to the ground and cover your face with your hands. Roll over and over to put out the flames. The fire fighters also set the children a challenge to make sure that they knew and could recall their home address before the next visit from the fire brigade. Beerwah State School would like to thank our local firemen for their wonderful talk and for the work that they do to reduce the risk of harm from fires.

Glenview / Palmview Beefy’s Pies wins Australian Gold Mark Hobbs from Beefy’s is proud to announce they have just won Gold at the Sydney’s Fine Food Show held last week. Their Signature Steak Pie received this prestigious award much to the delight of the Beefy’s team. As well as winning Silver for their Thai Green Curry Chicken, they also won Silver for both their Angus Steak and their Aussie Special aka Ned Kelly Pie. Owner of the family business Mark Hobbs said they were absolutely thrilled and honoured to achieve such a high accolade. The standard of this competition gets higher each year, which keeps us striving to constantly improve what we offer, he said. “Being up against over 1,000 pie entries, and being tested by 12 judges we really believe it’s a credit to the team at Beefy’s to win Gold. “As our Signature Steak Pie forms the base for about 80% of our range, you can guarantee we keep a high standard whichever is your Beefy’s favourite,” he said. Since Mark and his family moved to the Sunshine Coast in 1996, Mark has been keen to support locals, employing over 100 staff across their six stores, and by sourcing the highest quality ingredients from businesses like the Healthy Food Group at Kunda Park. Disappointed by winning photo

Like ‘Concerned bush walker’ from Beerwah, I too was disappointed to see a photo depicting trail bike riders in our natural areas selected as the winning image in the recent photographic competition. After 20 years involved in managing recreation in State forests in Queensland I can appreciate that not all trail bike riders do the wrong thing, but unfortunately there are a great number that do, causing significant damage to the environment. However I was disappointed with the line in ‘concerned bushwalkers’ letter where they refer to the State forests (or ‘forestry areas’) of our region as areas that trail bike riders have a right to destroy. Sadly it is this attitude within the community, where State forests are seen as a dumping ground or a place where anything goes, that leads to the significant damage to the environment. It also stresses the management capabilities of those organisations (government and private) that are charged as custodians of these areas … and then people wonder why areas are closed off to the public. If people gave a damn about these areas, our State forests and national parks would be in the beautiful condition they deserve to be in, and be an asset, attracting people to the region. Lee-Ann Raddatz Peachester

Re: Slippers advertising dribble, September 11 edition

Sadly James it was people like yourself who supported our former member for over 20 years. The Liberal party knew what he was like but chose to ignore it because it suited them. Why didn’t you get on your high horse years ago if you are so incensed now? Yes no one likes him but it is the liberal party’s fault for letting it go on for years, so leave our paper alone. Taking action before it is too late

Consider the following – you are middle aged and have just been told you may have cancer and that your doctor will need to monitor it. Later,

after further tests, you are told the signs are not good and you will need treatment. The treatment is going to be unpleasant and the outcome somewhat uncertain – you seek a second opinion and the diagnosis is confirmed. You know that if you delay, your chances will be much reduced, so you take action, and are glad they discovered the problem before it was too late. So why is it different when Scientists have provided evidence about the effects of climate change? The earth is warming too fast, ice is melting everywhere, especially at the poles, that the sea level is rising and will flood coastal cities, crops will be affected, fisheries will decline or change, species become extinct and storms and bushfires increase. They monitor the situation and it is confirmed from diverse and independent sources that the warming is caused by burning fossil fuels and from agricultural practice. But you dismiss the scientists as alarmist doomsayers expressing biased opinions. A few years later they provide you with more evidence, but you still ignore them. They keep providing more evidence, and each time find the scenario is worse than first thought, but still you do not act. Doctors and mechanics work with similar processes, given a sick person or a broken down car – they look at the symptoms, and if they are experienced enough and know the body or the car well, usually go straight to the problem and fix it or show us how to do so. Climate scientists are similar, but as with the doctor’s prescription and advice, we - all of us and our politicians have to take responsibility. Politicians have a responsibility to make this clear to us, to lead us through this somewhat difficult and complex task of stopping greenhouse gas emissions. We can do it, but time is running out - every year of delay requires a more difficult and extended effort to make a difference. Did we make the right choice at last Saturday’s elections? We must change and we must accept uncertainty – are our new politicians prepared for that? Are they going to tackle the problem or ignore it? Are we taking personal responsibility at home, now, as we do with cancer? Are we prepared to accept difficulty in order to benefit our children? Roger Callen Beerwah

Paid advertising

Last week’s correspondent, James Aitken, is probably being a little precious about your right to publish paid advertising from particular political candidates. If he is like me he probably didn’t back a winner anyway. However, I want your staff to know that I find your newspaper to be a valuable asset in the interesting mosaic that makes up the Glasshouse Country. Every week it is delivered free of charge to my letterbox and is read by family members. It exists in our house for several days so that your advertisers get a good ‘bang for their buck’. Unlike the Murdoch press it does not have a particular political bias and focuses on issues of local interest. This brings me to my next point. Your paper gives me the opportunity to remind readers that Councillor McKay has arranged for an information stand to be set up outside the Mooloolah IGA on September 21 from 9.00am until 10.30am.

The purpose of this stand is to inform residents of what council’s plan are for the upgrade of Glenview Road. I encourage people to attend this event so that residents can be better informed. It is hoped that there will be an opportunity for people to sign a petition so that council gets a greater appreciation of community sentiment about the neglected state of this busy road. Brad Boustead Glenview

In response

In response to the letter re Peter Slipper’s mammoth advertising spree in recent issues of GCNews, I too was disgusted at the sheer quantity of it all and I thought for a moment I was reading a different publication. However, it is Peter Slipper who should be ashamed of himself, and not the editor of GCNews. What we have witnessed is a totally shameless act of blatant self promotion from a man trying desperately to cling on to a highly paid job. The fact that Mr Slipper believed it was perfectly acceptable to bombard the community with pages and pages of expensive dribble is nothing short of ridiculous. I wonder how many other local newspapers he advertised in? Thank goodness most of the electorate had the common sense not to vote for him this time. GCNews needs all the financial support it can get from bona fide advertising to keep this very informative local newspaper alive for our community. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that it is a FREE newspaper, conveniently delivered to our homes every week. Incidentally, is it only me that gets a good laugh every time I drive north past the Setters fruit stall on Steve Irwin Way when I see the sign of Mal Brough with a pineapple growing out of his head?!! Thank God for the Glasshouse Country News

All the articles I do not agree, But in all honesty, that's how it should be. The other rags I care not, With bullish articles, it’s mostly just rot. Community News Centenary Concert at Glasshouse Country Baptist Church One hundred years ago, a small group of pioneers came together to form a little rural church. They met in places that no longer exist such as the Coochin Creek Motel which used to serve travellers on their way to the Gympie gold fields. A church is a group or gathering of people rather than buildings so even though the address has changed over the years, the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church (GCBC) celebrates its centenary this year. One of the celebrations was a community concert held on Election Day. GCBC has about 45 musicians and a core group of them, called ‘Spilt Milk’, performed at the Beerwah-Peachester RSL on ANZAC Day for the last couple of years. The church held the concert to thank the community for being part of its 100-year journey and approximately 200 people came to enjoy the music. Musicians and singers ranged in age from 10 to 68 years and a bit of everything in between. The concert was a ‘musical stir fry’ with genres

Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates

The brass section of Spilt Milk performed favourite jazz and war songs Photographer - Rob Hill including big band, jazz, war songs, modern pop and even movie themes such as Star Wars and the Muppets. There were toe tappers, sing alongs and quiet duos. Glasshouse Country Baptist Church would like to thank everyone who attended the concert and joined in their centenary celebrations.

Daffodil thanks

By Lea Parkes This year Kerry Jarvis agreed to take on the role of Daffodil Day Co-ordinator as Glenda Halpin, who has been doing an amazing job over the past decade, was away travelling.

Leone Newell of Glass House Mountains with Alwyn Bowyer of Peachester selling Daffodils

Even though Glenda wasn’t here, her group of dedicated volunteers once again agreed to sell the fresh daffodils and merchandise on the stalls on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They did a fabulous job in raising over $7,000.00. Kerry said she would like to say a big thanks to all the shops, businesses, and schools that sold the display box merchandise in Beerburrum, Glass House, Beerwah, Peachester and Landsborough. “Thanks also to all those in the community, who purchased flowers and merchandise. Your generosity is appreciated and thanks also to my wonderful friends and family as I'm sure I drove them all crazy with my daffodil day obsession,” Kerry said. Kerry also mentioned that she hopes Glenda had an enjoyable trip away and that she is keen to take on the job again in 2014.

Cultural and Spiritual Exchange Contributed by Chris Bell What food do you eat? Do you really have water all around your houses? Are there sharks swimming around your houses? Do your kids go to school? When did the missionaries come to your place? These are some of the questions that kids in schools have asked the Gaba Gaba Youth Ministry Team during its visit this week to Glasshouse Country. The village Youth Team members have been raising money for the last two years to fund their cultural and spiritual exchange with the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church in Beerwah. As well as bringing a Christian message and demonstrating how their faith is integral to their life, the Youth Ministry Team have demonstrated the culture of Gaba Gaba through a short film of village life, and through their music, songs, peroveta, and dance. According to the Youth Team co-ordinators, Guguna Garo and Gau Bala, the response from the school children, from kindergarten to high school, has been overwhelming. The kids seemed to have little knowledge of PNG, but were eager and responded excitedly. Some even learned to dance kitoro! www.gcnews.com.au

Visits to the Embracia elders’ village and to Glasshouse Country Care were special highlights. These people showed their enjoyment of the visit by jumping up and joining the dancers. The tour finished with a special celebration at the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church on Saturday with a mumu and lots of singing and dancing as the Glasshouse Country church and the Gaba Gaba youth exchanged their spiritual understandings, celebrated each others’ cultures and the 38th anniversary of PNG independence.

As historians know, a great deal can be learned about people in the past from their birth, marriage and death certificates. The Bankfoot House collection includes over 40 BDM certificates relating to members of the families who have occupied the house during its 134 year history. There are all three certificates for Mary Grigor nee Fenwick, who, along with her husband William, established Bankfoot House as a Cobb and Co lunch stop in 1868. Mary’s birth certificate shows she was born on 3 December 1834 in the Parish of Auchtergaven in Perthshire in Scotland. The Bankfoot document is a handwritten ‘Extract of an Entry’ in the parish register taken on 14 April 1883 and states, ‘John Fenwick, shoemaker, Bankfoot, had a daughter by his wife, Janet Dow. Born this day and baptised Mary’. With its emphasis on the father, the document gives an intriguing insight into the social norms of the time. The paper is brittle at the edges and stained in places, but like all the BDM certificates at Bankfoot is now protected inside an acid-free sleeve. The Extract is signed by Registrar Donald Cumming across a one penny stamp ‘Postage and Inland Revenue’ that depicts a profile headshot of Queen Victoria. Minister James Love celebrated marriage between Mary Fenwick, ‘spinster, of Eagle Farm’, and William Grigor, ‘timber merchant and bachelor, of Brisbane’ on 21 August 1863 in Brisbane’s Presbyterian Church. Witnesses were John Fielding and MH Delaney. This precious old marriage certificate is also stained and damaged at the edges. Mary is recorded as dying of ‘Apoplexy’ on 12 June 1900 at the home of her brother-in-law, Henry Wheeler, in Albion. The death certificate gives us a wealth of information including the names of her parents and children, her birthplace, and the names of witnesses to her burial in Nundah cemetery.

If you are interested in learning more about Bankfoot House and its occupants, please contact the Friends of Bankfoot House on 5493 0197 on a Wednesday or email friends@bankfoothouse.org. Glasshouse Country An amazing night Contributed by Dianne Paddick

White gowns, black tails and bow ties, long white gloves and dazzling shoes staying in time to the rhythm of the music... While much of the nation was glued to TV screens watching election results unfold, 32 students from high schools in the Glasshouse and Caloundra districts were occupied with formalities of a different kind as they took part in the annual Glasshouse Country Debutante Ball on Saturday, September 7. Magic happened as a receptive audience made up of official guests, Andrew Powell (State Member for Glass House), councillor Rick Baberowski, Father Ken Goodger and Beerwah High School principal Graham Trevenen, family members, friends and event volunteers looked on. The hard work and bruised toes from 11 weeks of dance practices and rehearsals finally came together as the group danced the Oxford Waltz gracefully on the dance floor. Once again a group of fine young women and men have demonstrated that traditions and standards have a place to be remembered and respected in our busy modern lives. Stay tuned for the date of the Deb Ball’s 20 year Anniversary to be announced early in 2014.

The human body is amazing. In spite of the abuse that we expose our bodies to, it is constantly being repaired and maintained. Given the right conditions the human body may recover from disease, bones will reconnect, injuries heal and pain can lessen or cease. Bowen Therapy treatments may assist with this process by releasing and rehydrating connective tissue (fascia). Nerves and blood vessels caught in the compromised fascia are freed, normal fluid flow is restored and an efficient exchange of nutrients and waste can take place. There is no set number of Bowen treatments. For some people a single Bowen treatment will be sufficient. In other cases a series of treatments may be required with an increase in the time between each visit.

Maintenance programs are designed around the needs of the client and are very flexible. There may be a recurring problem from strenuous activity, an injury, a medical condition or degenerative disease such as arthritis. A regular or maintenance Bowen treatment may assist these clients to participate in normal daily activities, exercise, sports and hobbies. Beerwah Bowen Therapy is by appointment Monday to Saturday at Beerwah Health Foods. Friday is clinic day with treatments at $30.00, making Bowen Therapy affordable for everybody. Home visits are also available. Phone Lesa on 0419 969 387.

Living Tourism Talks

with Jayne Wilson

Senior Tourism Consultant Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre New Faces – Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd recently welcomed new CEO Simon Ambrose to the team. Simon called into the Glasshouse Visitor Centre while on a tour of the area, he was given a guided tour by one of our volunteers Ivon, giving an insight into the local history and things to see and do. About Simon:- Simon Ambrose has a distinguished career in managing major regional destinations and attractions and has been appointed to the position of CEO of Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL). Simon is also the Deputy Chair of the Australian Regional Tourism Network (ARTN). Prior to Simon’s appointment to SCDL, he was the highly regarded CEO of Augusta Margaret River Tourism Association. He has also held management positions as the Director of the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre and, prior to that, he was Director of the premier McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park in Victoria. Simon supports the establishment of the Sunshine Coast Arts and Convention Centre, acknowledging the benefit that such a centre will provide in terms of increasing the region’s GDP and recognising the value of arts and culture as important centre pieces of the Sunshine Coast community. School Groups - Last week we welcomed a bus of school kids from Victoria Point State High School where they spent time learning about the mountains. The group visited the Glasshouse Mountains lookout as well as the Visitor Centre. This was a return visit for the school and we welcome them to continue to visit the centre in the future. Justice of the Peace - The Justice of the Peace service operates within the Glasshouse Information Visitor Centre, hours of service are Monday to Friday at varying hours. We would like to remind you that as this is a voluntary service we advise to phone the centre on 5438 7220 to confirm prior to coming in. Black Bat flower Tacca Chantrieri Cat’s Whiskers Devil Flower

The Bat Flower is native to tropical regions of Africa, Australia and South Eastern Asia, but as excited neighbours gathered around admiring this strikingly unusual flower in a Caloundra back garden, others ran to get their cameras. Some difficulties arise when photographing flowers in a breezy garden, as well as getting a dark coloured flower to stand out against the dark leaves. Holding a large white board between the flower and the leaves enabled details of the fragile spindly whiskers show up more clearly. Several close up shots from different angles, plus the use of the flash made for some varied and interesting pictures. The camera used was a digital Panasonic DMZ1 Lumix on automatic setting. Lots of handy hints on photography, photo editing and creative photography are shared at the U3A.

Grafx Group meets at the Beerwah Library each Thursday afternoon, from 3.00pm. New members are always welcome to find out more contact Alistair Davis on 5496 9006 or email alistairvet@gmail.com

The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information centre is located at Settler's Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains and is open 9.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 3.00pm Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Don’t fur-get to renew your pet registration

Pet owners will have started to receive their annual Sunshine Coast Council animal registration renewal notices in the mail reminding them of the September 30 due date. Service Delivery Portfolio Councillor Ted Hungerford said pet registration is focused on safety and security and is an important step in responsible pet ownership. “All cats and dogs must be registered every year and wear a council-issued registration tag when in public,” he said. “Registration is easy and helps council to identify pets if they stray and reunite them quickly with their owners. “It also informs council about the need for dog off-leash areas and litter bins. “The annual registration period for cats and dogs commences on October 1 each year and extends to September 30 the following year. “A handy fact sheet has also been included in the registration renewal mailout this year providing an important reminder about the local dog laws and responsible dog ownership.” Registration is free for pets under six months old and discounts apply for pensioners and for micro-chipped and de-sexed pets. There are several convenient payment methods and options available including online payments, over the phone, via Australia Post or at the closest Customer Contact Office. This year animal owners are also able to register their animal online for the first time via the MyCouncil function. Have your details or your pet’s details changed, or do you no longer own your pet? Pet owners can also notify council of any changes to their pets’ information online including changes to: pensioner details, desexing, microchipping, registration cancellations and address for your animal. For information about renewing your animal registration, visit council’s website. www.gcnews.com.au

Green Bins I share the communities concerns about the green bin waste service. The initiative was developed through a close analysis of waste received into our landfills that showed around 30% of waste in the general waste bin is actually green waste that should be kept out of our landfill. However, I don’t think it is right to introduce this service in such difficult economic times and I am not convinced that enough effort had been made to optimise voluntary participation in the service. The mandatory green bin service didn’t get my vote and I will continue to advocate and support changes to this initiative so that you have better choices about how you dispose of the domestic waste from your home.

Taxi Please In my role as Transport Portfolio Councillor it was my honour to present the Queensland Taxi Driver of the year award to Kim Allen at a Taxi Council state function held on the Sunshine Coast. It was an impressive event that demonstrated how sophisticated the taxi industry has become in relation to customer service and technology. Technology is used for tracking, bookings and analysis, and fleet operators are now looking to smart phone apps to improve taxi use. The night was really about celebrating great customer service and cultivating a service that is friendly and safe and offers consistent value.

Try Out Sports Day

A recent Council Summer Sports Expo at Landsborough was well attended by local families who came along to try out different sports and potentially join sporting clubs. Council organisers were very happy with the turnout with the great outcome that many of the young people who came along enrolled in sporting activities for the summer season, which is what it was all about.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 The details regarding a proposed new green waste bin collection service are still being fleshed out by Council. I didn’t support the decision to make the bins compulsory and I’m hopeful that there will be changes on how the proposal is implemented. Many people go to great lengths to compost organic waste from the kitchen and around the house and I appreciate the feedback I’ve been getting from the community about the issue. There is a lot more that we can do to prevent green waste from entering the general waste collection system and I’m a great supporter of more education for people interested in reducing their waste and reducing the costs associated with waste disposal. Rehabilitation work is about to get underway on two floodways in Harris Street and Shady Lane in Diamond Valley. The floodways have reached the end of their design life so they will be replaced and, where the natural environment permits, additional drainage infrastructure will be added. New owners are in full swing at the previously named Thunderbird Café a warm welcome to Nicki and Kenny who have named the café Kenny’s at Mooloolah. They have kindly agreed to host our monthly community meetings and we will stick to the same regularity of the first Thursday morning of every month. The next meeting is on Thursday, October 3 and we’ll have a council staff member along to explain why bollards were recently removed from Martin Rungert Park. I’ve heard that the Give a Moo for Mooloolah campaign has been a wonderful success with more locals thinking to shop locally before heading out to larger towns. Even the IGA has noted that shoppers who also visit the competition in other towns, have started to support their local shops more than ever. It’s a great result and I really encourage everyone to shop locally and support local jobs and local business whenever they can. Don’t forget that you can meet with council staff on Saturday, September 21 from 9.00am and 10.30am outside IGA about the planned road work along Glenview Road. It’s a good opportunity to ask questions and get all the answers about council the work council is proposing for the road. www.gcnews.com.au

New Open Garden at Palmwoods

Wander around Jatlen Park at their open garden on October 5 and 6, and you will see lovely low hedges and vine-covered arches that divide this contemporary park-like garden into different areas, but still allow an expansive view of the whole garden and the borrowed landscape at all times. Manicured camellia and lillypilly hedges, fences smothered in star jasmine, combine with borders of bromeliads, agaves, azaleas and other exotic plants. Expansive lawns are dotted with beautiful specimen trees, including gordonia, magnolias and jacarandas. A mature avocado tree shelters a secret garden brimming with orchids, ferns, staghorns and begonias. Mass plantings of agapanthus embrace the trunks of palm trees on the front lawn and a curved terrace is topped by pretty tubs of potted dwarf weeping camellias. Lunches and light refreshments will be available and plants will be for sale. The owners will donate their proceeds to Aislinn Healy’s work with children in Tanzania. The garden is at 72 Winston South Road, Palmwoods, admission is $7.00 (under 18 free) and is open from 10.00am – 4.30pm each day.

Spring Celebration at Glasshouse Orchid Show

The whole vibrant world of orchids will be coming to Beerwah, for Glasshouse Country Orchid Society’s 36th Annual Spring Show. On Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28, the Beerwah Community Hall will be the scene of massed displays of orchids as the nine orchid societies of the Sunshine Coast and adjacent regions display their expertise. There’ll be a wide diversity of flowers, both native and exotic, amazing shapes, colours and fragrances all combining to delight your senses. And, if something in the displays catches your eye you may well be able to acquire a similar plant from the sales area where Society members will help with tips and selection. You’ll also be able to catch up with advice and ask questions as experienced growers demonstrate how to care for your plants. Talks are timed for 10.00am and 2.00pm on the Friday and 10.00am on the Saturday. Orchids are the focal point of the floral art displays too. Check out what creative hands can do within the categories of ‘Art with Bark’ and ‘Sticks and Stones’. Phal. I-Hsin Dalmation Orchid accessories will also be on sale: pots, bark, hangers, baskets, stakes, fertilisers etc; everything you could possibly need to ensure your plants grow and flower happily. Mark it in your diary now, and be there at the Beerwah Hall; bring a friend or two and relax on the deck with tea, coffee and a home-made treat, and revel in the sights of spring. Opening hours are: Friday, September 27 from 9.00am to 5.00pm and Saturday, September 28 from 9.00am to 2.30pm. Entry is $2.00.

The week ahead

This weekend begins a week long convention for my church. Tuning the car radio to 90.3FM as you drive past the Deception Bay and Boundary Road exits of the Bruce Highway south of Burpengary could have you listening to the music and worship of over 7,000 people on the next two weekends. With almost 3,000 camping in tents, cabins or caravans during the week, the traffic certainly becomes busy on Saturdays as people from Rockhampton to the Gold Coast converge on Haskell Park on Old Gympie Road Dakabin. Yes I have given up my comfortable bed at home to squeeze into a van. But there are family members, grandchildren and lots of friendly

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

The Playgroup at the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church, Twin Peaks Drive Beerwah are taking a break for the school holidays, September 21 until October 7. We look forward to seeing our mums and children back on Wednesday, October 9. We would love to welcome new mums and children, too. Playgroup runs from 9.00am to 11.00am. There is no fee, and a bottomless coffee / tea pot for mums! Our helpers are all grandparents and blue card holders. We have amongst our number a mother and baby nurse, who is always available to listen to mums' concerns and to keep a track of babies' and toddlers' milestones. We'll be so glad to see everyone back on October 9. God Bless you all!

SEPTEMBER 18 2013

faces. It is a spiritual highlight of the year for my wife and I. Sometimes we need special events in our lives. It could be a marriage, a holiday to a favourite beach resort, a family reunion, or just lunch with a special person. On the spiritual side it could be a special experience by an outback river, a glimpse of the wonder of creation in a rainforest, the bloom in faith from a finally understood Scripture passage, or the joy of fellowship with other followers of Jesus Christ. I am looking forward to the next 10 days. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest’ (New Living Testament). He really meant that we could come one at a time, alone. But when people find hope and joy in worshipping together they also find strength. And that strength can be just what we need to face the vicissitudes of life. Of course you may find that, by visiting your local church or fellowship group. But if you are passing by south of Burpengary through to the Kallangur exit, check out 90.3FM. You’ll probably hear me between 7.00am to 9.30am most mornings. If you can, I would love you to say a prayer that our time together at the convention will be spiritually profitable.

Hinterland Boxing Club

Contributed by Stephen Pitt On Saturday, September 14 HBC sent a team of four athletes pre-matched for bouts at the Coorparoo Boxing Gym tournament. First up saw Jake Molloy who again stepped up a division to box an athlete from the Beaudesert Boxing Club in the 40 kg. | SEPTEMBER 18 2013

Sponsor Mavis, Anne, Div 1 winner Sue and sponsor Gail from the Coorparoo boxing gym in the 63kg division. Leroy was persistent from the opening bell scoring with looping hooks to the body and head of his opponent. Leroy finished the bout strongly in the last round to take the win. Well done to Leroy who has really improved over the past couple of months. Big Jake Hennessy was up next in an evenly matched bout against an athlete from Brisbane Boxing in the 81 kg division. Jake put in the best performance of his career so far despite narrowly going down on points in a seesawing affair. Big improvement from Jake. The main event saw Taylen Pitt in a rematch with an athlete from the Cobra Boxing Gym in the 64 kg division. This was a cracker of a fight with Taylen setting a fast pace in the opening round with strong punching combinations. Taylen maintained this pace through to final bell to come away with a well deserved win. A big thanks to the HBC crew who travelled down to support the boys.

Local karate kids clean up Tibro's Netball Club celebrates 25 years To celebrate, the club is holding an anniversary If you would like to purchase tickets to be competition dinner at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club posted out or enquire about the evening, please Ten kids from the Uechi Ryu Karate Do at Glass House Mountains and Landsborough competed at the recent International Sport Karate Association Queensland Championships on the Gold Coast, where they returned with a swag of trophies. Sensei Jasmine Ruhl from the Glass House Mountains group was very proud of her talented students. “Each of the kids from here came back with two or more trophies – so it was a fantastic effort from them all,” said Sensei Jasmine. “This competition is the lead-up to the Australian Championships in Sydney next year, from which they’ll select the Australian team to compete in the World Championships in New Zealand. Sensei Jasmine says that karate is a great sport for youth to take up. “It develops self-confidence and self-discipline, but we also teach health and safety awareness. Stranger danger and strategies to counter bullying are a big part of our program,” she said. The Glass House Mountains sessions are held at the Community Hall on a Wednesday from 5.00pm to 6.00pm, with the group suited to boys and girls aged from six to 16 years.

TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This full Moon week being in the sign of Pisces brings friends and others together with whom you are personally and emotionally involved. Try this week for reconciling a variety of differences. It may bring about a surprising change in plans over the weekend throwing you off balance. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Perhaps this full Moon week arouses an inspiring sense of idealistic public service. It certainly is the best time to review the medications you have been taking. It’s the best time to visit your naturopath or receive soothing massages. Perhaps you should consider some acupuncture. CANCER June 22 – July 22 The full Moon in Pisces is compatible with your water sign, Cancer, and possibly invites you to dream of a cruise ship experience. Worry or concern about loved ones is certainly misplaced. It’s just that someone you care about faces a challenge and he or she can learn from it now. LEO July 23 – August 22 Under this full Moon week in Pisces, perhaps an inspired idea motivates you to take bold action. If it’s combined with congenial speech, everyone listens; you stand confidently in the winner’s circle. Power struggles may creep into family relations due to your forgetfulness.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The beginning of the week sees your intuitive ideas and perhaps even mystical quality enhanced so trust your heart and let it rule your head instead of vice versa. Under the full Moon in Pisces from Thursday, some conversations can provide a new and more optimistic outlook now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This just may be one of the best weeks of your life this year. Early in the week, the Moon is in your sign, then moves to the full Moon in Pisces ushering in a thunder storm of incoming information. By the weekend you will feel the call of duty. Your future advancement is coming. PISCES February 20 – March 20 This can be one of your best weeks ever with the full Moon in your sign offering support, making you more effective. It’s all there for you, sensitivity, compassion, intuition, and imagination. Qualities that you are famous for will be bought to the fore. Plan for a great vacation. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The full Moon towards the end of next week signals a time to nourish your soul and contemplate your life through an inner quest. The Moon in your twelfth sector means time alone in nature or meditation. Saturn in Pluto will help you eliminate old behaviour that's no longer useful now.

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The Moon brings to light all facets of any relationship whether marital, business, or contractual. Follow up on any interesting contacts. You are in a position to make decisions concerning others that can make long lasting impact. Full Moon in your opposite sign suggests psychic powers. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This week will see the Moon swing from Aquarius into the full Moon in Pisces by the weekend. Past worries may disappear. Communications have a fast zestful snap about them. You may feel like being impulsively outspoken as some of your contacts may cause your nerves to fray. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 With the full Moon in the middle of Pisces this makes the emphasis this week in strong water signs, thus finding your emotions heightened. Your creative side is enhanced too as well as romance. A good week to bring emotions and reason into balance. Stalled projects move forward. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This is a steaming week for you, as your fire sign burns into the full Moon in Pisces. Steam rises out of your ears as too many choices obscure key points. A time at your home retreat from a hectic public life can offer peace. Pluto going direct will impact your financial situation nicely.
