Yes, one of our Beerwah locals was featured on the front cover of Harper’s BAZAAR Australia this month. Australia Zoo’s Chip the Koala, appeared alongside Victoria’s Secret supermodel Shanina Shaik. This is the 15-month-old Koala’s modelling debut and with her soft grey fur and ‘90s supermodel attitude – ensuring she gets 20 hours of beauty sleep a day – Australia Zoo just knew Chip would be a star! The Harper’s BAZAAR crew understood all too well that in typical model fashion, they’d have to go to Chip, so with suitcases of designer clothing and a sense of adventure they flew up to her home. After several test shots with a toy koala, little Chip was ready, snuggling into Shanina and pulling that adorable face with ease to secure the perfect cover shot. Chip’s modelling debut not only showcases the amazing wildlife at Australia Zoo, but draws attention to the importance of protecting Australian wildlife for future generations. The Harper’s BAZAAR shoot also showcased Australia Zoo’s grey Kangaroos and a beautiful Woma Python, as well as some of the Australia Zoo staff too!

MARKET APPRAISAL Contact mike@scremail.com

Seven members of the Towerless NBN for Maleny Hinterlands Group recently made a presentation to a Sunshine Coast Council Strategic Discussion Forum set up for this presentation.

Mike Weaver 0490 061 749

This hour long session was attended by seven councillors, Council’s CEO, the Director of Regional Strategy and Planning and two senior planning staff. The aims for the presentation were to provide information to council about the NBN’s proposed approach for the hinterland and how this differed from their approach in the more populated areas. • To explain the community concerns relating to visual amenity, reduction in property values and tourism. • To illustrate concerns about possible long-term health effects on humans, flora and fauna. • To relate to the SCC Planning Scheme - its Telecommunications Facility Code and Scenic Amenity Overlays. Maps depicting the existing 11 tower sites, plus general areas where the next seven towers may be located, were presented. NBN has failed to provide any information relating to areas they propose to service with their microwave towers. There may be up to 30 towers in the SCC area when NBN’s plans for the areas of Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Peachester are revealed.

These microwave towers will be about 40 metres high (equivalent to a 12 storey building). After any approval, a further five metres in height can be added by another user without further approval by a local authority (or reference to the community). After the next NBN meeting (after Easter) it is expected that NBN will lodge Development Applications (DA) for their proposed sites. Each of these DA will be well over 100 pages. The community has 10 working days in which to study the documents, then prepare and lodge their objections. In preparation for this hectic period, the Group encourages every concerned person to review the Telecommunications Facility Code and Scenic Amenity Overlays within the SCC Planning Scheme which you can find at http://www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=scplanning-scheme Some draft formats for objections are being prepared by the Group. These will be discussed at a meeting in the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre this week.

Free Range Camping Beerwah is about to be on the cutting edge of tourism promotion, with the area chosen to be a ‘pioneer town’ for the soon to be launched travellers holiday website – Free Range Camping www.freerangecamping.com.au Eumundi couple Rob and Michelle Catania – who started Free Range Camping – have been travelling around Australia for two and a half years with their children Jade, eight, and Henry, four, and were staying at the Beerwah Sportsground last week where GCM News caught up with them. “The trip has changed our lives for the better, and as a result we came up with the idea for ‘Free Range Camping’,” said Rob. “Essentially it is a camping directory, but with a difference. “We will have the usual information about rest areas, free camps and low cost camps, but will throw in a lot more options such as house / farm sitting, volunteering / helping out and private park-overs. “The site will also feature a local business directory to inform travellers of all the local businesses – from tourist activities to hairdressers to welders,” he said. GCM News was given a sneak-peek at the website as it will look after it is launched. With an interactive, easy to use and navigate format, using a simple mapping function, it shows where you are and what facilities, businesses and attractions are around you in real-time.

It allows you to look up information on where you can stay and what you can do, and shows what local businesses are happy to offer travellers discounts and other benefits. The Free Range Camping Facebook page already has over 33,500 likes – and growing daily. That’s a massive audience reach, even before the website is fully operational. For this reason, the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Rob to help local businesses and community groups tell the world about what the local area has to offer. Chamber Executive Committee Member Judy Tomlinson has continued the work that ex-President Bob Mclean started on encouraging motoring holidayers to come, stay and spend in our region. “The Chamber of Commerce is keen to encourage travellers to utilise our region and the delights we have to offer,” Judy said. “And by partnering as a ‘pioneer town’ on the website, Beerwah and surrounds will have the perfect platform to sell ourselves to the travelling world. “I anticipate the site will be a great resource for locals as well as travellers,” said Judy. For this reason, the Chamber have organised for Rob to return in April and hold two information sessions on April 9 at the Beerwah RSL. “It will be an opportunity for local businesses and community groups to learn what the Free Range Camping website can offer. “Featured businesses receive a free listing and mini-webpage on the site, as well as

Michelle and Rob Catania with their camper-kids, Jade and Henry the opportunity to link with the thousands of travellers passing through our region each week,” Judy explained. For more details and to register your interest to attend an information session, go to the Chamber of Commerce website www.glasshousemountains.com.au GCM News will also bring you an update in edition April 1.

Tourism is an important part of our local identity and economy. A resident contacted GCM News office last week, concerned that the upkeep of some tourist spots isn’t portraying the best image of our region. The woman, who asked not to be identified, took people to the Glass House Lookout (on Glass House – Woodford Road) and was appalled that the vegetation was obscuring the views. “It’s somewhere that is promoted for tourists to get a good view of our mountains, and all you can see are the bushes and saplings that have grown up and blocked the view from most of the area,” she said. “The site is looked after by National Parks, but it seems that they only do minimal pruning and as a result, we are losing the very reason why the lookout is there. “They’ve built beautiful stone walls, paths and informative display boards, but all you can see are trees and bushes … not the mountains. “The vegetation used to be kept low, but now they seem to either not prune them regularly enough or not trim them down low enough to make a difference.” According to a spokesperson from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, vegetation at the Glass House Mountains Lookout is periodically maintained so that views of Mt Beerwah and Mt Coonowrin can be seen from the main lookout platform. “Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service tries to strike a balance between maintenance of the view and allowing vegetation to grow to preserve

the natural landscape setting at the lookout,” the spokesperson said. “Thinning of the vegetation is carried out whenever it is needed. We’ve had a very warm, wet summer which has contributed to the growth, and we acknowledge that some maintenance is required. “It is intended for this maintenance to be done as soon as possible, given current work priorities.” Glass House MP Andrew Powell is concerned that the lookout may not be looking its best. “As the local Member for Glass House, it's disappointing to learn that visitors to our beautiful Hinterland region have had this sort of experience with overgrown vegetation - it's simply unacceptable,” said Mr Powell. “I am so pleased this has been brought to my attention. I'll immediately report it to the relevant REMEMBER – IMPORTANT –T Minister and ensure theyEnergex act – not(we only now will dobut it for you) BU on a regular basis in the future. expenditure, doesn’t need to take p “I'll keep the community posted on May the Lord grant you all a developments.”

To the people and businesses who do NOT have solar Let’s say your bill is $600 per quarter now. That’s about 20kWh (kilowatt hour) use of electricity per day. Investing $6,300 in solar provides you with 20kWh per day. You will probably cut your energy consumption bill by: A – for a business – 86%* B – for a house with people home during the day – 54%* C – for a house with all out at work or school – 45%* This is a conservative estimate. When we look at your electrical appliances and energy usage, we will usually save you MUCH MORE. So, if you spend $6,300 on solar for the above, it is a 22.8% return on your investment (ROI) for A, 20.25% return for B, and 17.25% return for C. Did you notice that petrol prices are rising – well so are solar prices. The Aussie dollar is losing ground so why wait? Act NOW. Free consultation. *Figures based on average users & conditions

Be aware of the butterfly It seems that the vulnerable Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is making an appearance, and local environment group GMAN (Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network) is asking you to be on the lookout. “We’ve seen a number of female butterflies recently, as well as discovering more caterpillars appearing on our Birdwing Butterfly Vines every day,” said GMAN President Gwen Malcolm. “People who have planted the vines in their backyards or on their properties should keep a keen eye out for the hungry caterpillars eating the leaves.” Richmond Birdwing Butterflies used to be plentiful, but due to habitat destruction and the poisonous Dutchman’s Pipe vine, their numbers are drastically low. However, determined community action has seen their numbers increase, with many people planting their native food source – the Birdwing Butterfly Vine. Much of this momentum has resulted from the hard work of the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network (RBCN) and the many community groups they support. Phil Moran from RBCN says that, having become extinct from two-thirds of its former range, the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly needs our help to survive. “If you have planted their food vines, you should take notice of what may be on the leaves. “If you see the caterpillars, take extra care when you are doing any yard work so that you don’t disturb them too much,” Phil explained. “And definitely don’t use any insecticides near them.

“After about four to six weeks, the caterpillars can grow up to 7cm long. They then pupate and about a month later emerge as the adult butterfly. Interestingly, caterpillars that pupate in autumn stay in the chrysalis form throughout the winter, only emerging as adults the following spring. “If you’d like to help the butterflies survive locally, GMAN are one of our partners who are growing and distributing the Birdwing Butterfly Vines,” said Phil. For many years, GMAN have been growing and selling potted vines for people to plant on their properties as part of the species recovery program. “We would love to hear of any butterfly or caterpillar sightings, so we can record their occurrence as part of the recovery project,” Gwen explained. “We also have vines available for people to buy. It’s a great way to help this stunning local butterfly.” GMAN can be contacted by emailing info@gmaninc.com.au or by calling 5493 0029. Check out their website www. gman-inc.com.au More information of the butterflies can be found on the RBCN website www.wildlife.org.au

People with an intellectual or learning disability will have the chance to learn about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), at free Sunshine Coast workshops. Chair of Queenslander’s with Disability Network (QDN), Nigel Webb, said the aim of the ‘Ready to go’ project is to empower people by helping them understand what their future could look like with an NDIS. “We know that people with intellectual or learning disability will represent more than 60% of people to receive help under the NDIS. However the messages are sometimes complicated and we felt many people were missing out,” Mr Webb said. “The Plan ahead introductory workshops are interactive and use games, drawing activities and other fun ways to learn new information,

to help people get ready for the NDIS. They are facilitated by people with disability.” QDN’s ‘Ready to go’ is one of nine projects funded by Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services to help people get ready for the NDIS in Queensland. QDN is delivering workshops across the Sunshine Coast throughout 2015. The next one is in Nambour on March 25, followed by a workshop in Bokarina on April 8 and 15. More workshops and masterclasses will be held later in the year, and there will be online resources for those unable to attend. The workshops are specifically for people with intellectual or learning disability. Attendance is free. To register phone 1300 363 783 (local call) or visit www.qdn.org.au/readytogo

Women’s Social Group On the second and fourth Wednesday of each month a social group for Glasshouse Country women meet up at the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. It’s a very informal group who are all about making new friends, enjoying a social chat over a cuppa, and getting out. Sometimes they meet up for coffee and a chat, and other times they have had some interesting outings, or workshops and guest speakers. This small group are keen to encourage others to come along to their next gathering which

will be barbecue on Wednesday, March 25 from 12.00noon in United Park, in front of the neighbourhood centre. There is no cost; all you have to do is bring yourself. If you haven’t been along before this is a great chance to get to know each other over lunch. The group are looking forward to having a great year, and if there is something that you would like the Women’s Social Group to do or go somewhere, please let them know and they’ll see what they can do.

How well has your teen settled into high school? World Day of Prayer

Contributed by Pam Lever The Mary MacKillop centre had a full house when the Beerwah Catholic community hosted the international World Day of Prayer service on the morning of March 6. This year the service was provided by the women of the Bahamas and covered such issues as domestic violence, refugees, teenage mothers, HIV AIDS, and breast cancer. The reflection was given by Father Christopher Obi from the Caloundra Catholic ministry team with the theme that it is in offering yourself to the service of others that real joy can be found. A highlight of the occasion was the painted backdrop by Catholic community member, Tina Homer. This was a colourful rendition of floral, bird, fish and other emblems of the Bahamas. The service concluded with the Rev. Margaret Niethe accepting the call to host next year’s World Day of Prayer on behalf of the local Uniting Church. An offering of $528.15 was collected and sent to the state committee for the World Day of Prayer for distribution as recorded in their annual report. As customary, those present shared food and fellowship after the service to wind up this annual reminder of our common Christian heritage.

Find out if GCCC will meet your teen’s needs. Ring Sonya to book a no-obligation personalised tour today.

The Sunshine Girls are keen to help the wives of farmers doing it tough on the land at the moment. As it is often the mums who go without, the idea is by providing a few small practical items; it could really help lift their spirits. The idea was to ask other local mums to help out by finding an empty shoe box and filling it with little items that a mum who has had to go without might really appreciate. Little luxuries and practical items that may not be able to be bought due to financial concerns would be ideal. Items such as face cream, shampoo and conditioner, nail files, nail or hand cream, deodorant, pretty soaps, even a nice new hair brush, hair ties, a beanie, scarf, or comfy socks etc are suitable suggestions. Please do not put nail polish or lollies in the box as they cannot cope with the heat and some of the boxes may be sent to quite remote properties. Please cover the box - maybe with some pretty paper and put an elastic band around it but do ensure that it’s not sealed. You may also want to pop in a little note of support from one mum to another. The date for collecting these boxes has been brought forward from October to the end of August to help out sooner, but you still have plenty of time to gather items. This is a lovely heartfelt idea that will no doubt bring some small but much needed joy to these hardworking women on the land.

Report a Roadside Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, has been inundated with enquiries from people in Glass House regarding overgrown vegetation throughout this predominately Hinterland electorate. Mr Powell has reported the instances to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) who have acknowledged their contractors have gone to sleep on the job. “It has actually become a safety concern for many of the people that have made contact with me. They are reporting overgrown vegetation that is creating visibility and safety issues along our Hinterland main roads,” he said. Mr Powell is asking community members to alert his office, either by phone call or email, as soon as possible if they identify any vegetation issues in their community. "TMR are asking for examples - written or photographic - so that they get the contractors to lift their game. I'm seeking your assistance to be able to provide this to them,” he said.

“Photographic evidence would obviously be great, but can I urge people to only stop and take photos if they deem it safe to do so,” he added. “The more pictorial evidence we can gather to present to TMR would be great. Even if the locations can be provided to my office I can arrange to get photos taken myself. “This is a huge issue for the people in Glass House – I have had so many phone calls and emails about this that I have literally lost count. And people aren't just worried about shoddy mowing - weed management appears to have gone out the window too. “I am prepared to take the same approach to weeds as with mowing. If people identify a major issue with roadside weeds in the community, please let my office know so we can update TMR,” Mr Powell concluded. TMR is responsible for the following roads in the local area, Beerburrum Road, Steve Irwin Way, Kilcoy-Beerwah Road, Maleny-Landsborough Road, Maleny-Stanley River Road and MalenyMontville Road.

Buy fresh, direct from the farm These days more people are taking an interest in where the food on their table comes from, and many people are keen to only purchase produce that is grown locally. With this in mind, it is good to know that you don’t have to travel far to buy quality, fresh meat and meat products from the farm at the Barry Family Butchers on Burys Road, (off Roys Road) at Beerwah. The Barry family are Beerwah born and bred and have been involved in farming for generations. A number of years ago, Robert and Narelle Barry decided it made more sense to them to sell direct to the public, as well as being a wholesaler. Robert said their customers can purchase fresher products, at better prices, which in turn leads to happy customers. Selling from the farm gate means they can also sell in bulk as a half or whole beast, as well as by

the kilo, whatever suits your individual needs. They also have a huge range of small goods made on-site in their smokehouse, as well as ready to cook meal ideas, great for when you are in a hurry. To fit into people’s busy lifestyles they are open from 6.00am Monday – Saturday, with Saturday being a busy day, with people coming from outside the area. And for those special occasions, Barry Family Butchers can also offer spit roast hire – complete with the roast of your choice. They even offer free delivery across the entire Glasshouse Country and Maleny News readership area – (conditions apply). Located only 3km from town, getting there is easy. All you do is turn off Roys Road then head down Burys Road until you see their property on the right hand side.

Recollections of a visit to the Western Front Over the coming weeks, GCM News will be bringing you stories from our local area that link our communities with events of World War 1. This week's story is from Glass House Mountains resident Ron Gillinder who toured the World War 1Western Front in 2012 and below are his recollections of that poignant visit. Many families around Australia have ancestors who made the supreme sacrifice in what was known as the Great War from 1914 to 1918. It was to be the war to end all wars. Sadly these hopes were not to be realised. Almost 97 years after the armistice in 1918 we still remember the service and sacrifice of so many young Australians who did not come home from the Western Front in France and Belgium. Over 44,700 were killed or died of wounds. Many more were left physically disabled or shell-shocked. Today the Western Front battlefields contain numerous war cemeteries and memorials dedicated to those who did not come home. Five members of Glass House Mountains' Friends of Bankfoot House, Helen Page, Ethel Burgess, Elaine Reeves, my wife Robyn and myself, completed a tour of the Western Front area, escorted by historians from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. We had each identified the names of relatives who are buried or commemorated on the Western Front sites and our guides were able to schedule our tour to include these graves. From my family I was able to visit the grave (near Bapaume France) of Corporal Joseph Bruckshaw of the 2nd Australian Pioneers, who enlisted in September 1916 and was killed in action in April 1917, at the age of 22.

The Australian Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux in the Somme where a white stone monument bears the names of over 11,000 Australian soldiers who died in France but have no known grave

A beautifully worded plaque on the front of a new school building in the town of Villers-Bretonneux commemorates the bond of friendship between Australia and France I can recall my grandmother telling me she went to the wharf in Brisbane to farewell Joe in 1916 and accidently tore her dress on the wharf. Joe told her: "Don’t worry Aunty, I’ll buy you a new one when I return." Apart from the major memorials on the Western Front established by the nations involved, there are numerous smaller war cemeteries, many bordering ploughed farmland and all reverently cared for. Nothing prepares you however for the huge memorials containing many thousands of names of Allied soldiers who have no known graves. The Australian Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux in the Somme includes a white stone monument bearing the names of over 11,000 Australian soldiers who died in France but have no known grave. Twelve hundred Australian soldiers gave their lives during the heroic recapture of the town from April 24 to 25 in 1918. By this time the town of Villers-Bretonneux had been completely destroyed, including the school. Subsequently school children in Victoria, Australia, contributed to the rebuilding of the school and there is a beautifully worded plaque on the front of the new school building commemorating the bond of friendship between Australia and France. A large sign also stands over the school yard ‘Do Not Forget Australia’. The high regard in which Australians are held permeates throughout the Western Front region. One of our first stops on the tour was a Commonwealth War Grave in Vignacourt. While we were looking at the headstones a young local woman noticed our Australian insignia on the front of the coach. She invited the group to come and see the recently established small Australian museum a few metres down the road. The museum contained many photos printed from old glass negatives stored in the barn in Vignacourt.

These were the negatives purchased by Australian entrepreneur Kerry Stokes and donated to the Australian War Memorial. Vignacourt was a town away from the trench fighting where Australian soldiers could recuperate. The photos show soldiers in a more relaxed mood. The high regard for Australian soldiers can also be found in Belgium in the town of Ypres, another town reduced to rubble by German artillery during WWI. Because of the high civilian casualty rate the town was completely evacuated in May 1915. It was entirely rebuilt after the war. The Menin Gate memorial over one of the main arterial roads into town bears the names of 54,896 British Empire soldiers who died in and around Ypres and have no known grave. In the four great battles around the town of Ypres more than 250,000 soldiers of the British Empire (mainly British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, Pakistani and South African troops) lost their lives. Awed and inspired by this scale of sacrifice, a number of citizens suggested it would be appropriate to organise a daily ceremony as a token of gratitude. Ever since 1928, at 8.00pm every night inside the archway of the gate, the Last Post is played by six buglers. The buglers are traditionally recruited from the local volunteer fire brigade. The ceremony attracts many visitors and wreath layers. There is a staggering statistic recorded in the historical Museum of the Great War in Peronne, France, which shows a total of 9.4 million troop fatalities from all nations involved in World War I. It is a tour we members of Friends of Bankfoot House will never forget and shall none of us ever forget those Australians, including local soldiers, who fought so bravely for our country. www.gcnews.com.au

School News Classrooms now nerve centre

Peachester Master Chef

Contributed by Andrea Balcombe P&C Peachester Primary Year 4 class are enjoying their chance at becoming culinary wizards in the kitchen this year. The school’s fabulous kitchen facility, as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, enables the children to explore the world of growing, harvesting, cooking and sharing seasonal food. The kitchen garden provides much of the produce for the menu on the day and the Enviro Club are regularly seen on the job, recycling scraps for the compost bins. Kitchen classes enable the children to learn valuable lessons relating to weight, measures, time and temperatures and changing states of matter.

“Exploring new ideas about food and venturing out of comfort zone eating,” is what Mrs Thorne, the cooking teacher, says she loves to see, as well as, “kids trying new tastes and appreciating new sensations.” The end of the session has proven to be the most popular, when all students get to sit down as a group at the tables, laid with napery and cutlery, to eat the culinary delights they have made, such as pumpkin ravioli, beetroot dip, battered eggplant, sushi and magical salad!

Last week Pacific Lutheran College celebrated the opening of their new Year 3 - 5 learning space, which supports Pacific’s innovative approach to education by providing a flexible workspace for students and teachers. The learning space provides dynamic areas for small groups, large groups and independent work and features full access to technology throughout. Construction of the building began at the start of 2014 and the space has been in use since the start of this school year. College Principal, Dr Bronwyn Dolling, said the new learning space is already a valued addition to the Pacific community. “Our college is moving away from thinking of classrooms as ‘buildings’ to instead thinking of them as ‘nerve centres’,” Dr Dolling said. “The new building features transparent walls that connect teachers, students and the community to the wealth of knowledge that exists in the world,” she said.

School scrubbing at GCCC By Sandy Johnson

While the Glasshouse Country Christian College secondary students headed into Beerwah for clean up Australia, the primary students stayed a little closer to home and cleaned up their own school. To encourage the students to try even harder, the challenge was turned into a competition so students could earn house points on the day. Each of the three sporting houses were given an area of the college to clean up and were judged on how clean the area looked, how well the students participated, and how they performed as a team. The students attacked the challenge with gusto

and began the event with rousing war cries. A favourite job was scrubbing down the muchloved little red cubby house. Others swept sand back into the sand pit, washed walls, scoured seats, and picked up stray bits of litter from the gardens. Some of the younger students loved cleaning so much that for days afterward they kept asking for a dust pan and rubber gloves so they could clean some more during their lunch breaks. There was only one downside to the event. Now the parents have seen how good their children are at cleaning, there will be no excuses back home!

Forty Winks celebrates its newest arrivals

By Sonia Clark Forty Winks at Morayfield have cause to celebrate in a number of ways. Whilst the co-op business celebrates 30 years, the family owned store at Morayfield is happily celebrating the newest arrivals from two of its family staff members. The family run business is owned by Jeff and Annette Townsend who established the store nearly 21 years ago. At the time they were the 50th 40 Winks store to open and only the third in Queensland – and they are the oldest established bedding store in the area. The business is truly a family affair with five out of the six staff members related. Along with Jeff and Annette, daughters Danae and Carly are part of the business as well as son-in-law Scott. Danae and Carly initially started working part-time with their parent’s business while they were still studying at Uni. Danae has now been with the business fulltime for nearly 10 years and Carly rejoined the business after the birth of her first child. Both daughters have recently each welcomed their second child. Proud grandmother Annette has understandably been very excited about her newest grandchildren Allyra and Jordy, and also speaks highly of being able to work with her children. “We are so fortunate to have our children around us and being able to work with them. When the grandkids are in the store it’s a real magnet for customers and something that has been very accepted by both our customers and head office,” she said. Danae says working with family definitely has its benefits. “We are so familiar with each other and can also enjoy the flexibility of working in a truly family friendly environment,” she said. One of the nicest aspects has been being able to bring their young children to work and having everyone pitch in with Carly and Jordy with Danae and Allyra www.gcnews.com.au

Police Beat with Constable Susan Lowndes

Property Crime While some people may like to think of our stretch of hinterland as being a quiet area and see no need to lock houses or cars, it is an unfortunate fact that there will always be people that take advantage of that. Leaving a house or vehicle unlocked is only making it easier for the criminals. There has been a recent increase in the number of incidents of stealing from vehicles, theft of the vehicle itself, and unlawful entry to property. Most of these have occurred in the main township areas of Beerwah, Landsborough and Glass House Mountains and a number of these offences have been into homes or vehicles that were not locked. It is important to lock your house at night, but also during the day if you are, for instance, out the back and can’t see the front door or garage then these should be locked. Don’t leave car keys and garage keys in places that are easy to see from the front door or very obvious. This is only making it simpler for the thief to take your car or tools and other items stored in the garage. Always lock your vehicle, including the boot and sunroof and remember to fully close the windows. Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle, or make sure they are well hidden. Don’t leave keys in the ignition if your vehicle is unattended, even for a minute. Don’t hide spare keys on or in the vehicle.

Road Safety

Sadly so far this year 10 people have needlessly lost their lives on Central Region roads, twice as many as the same period in 2014. Driver behaviour continues to be the cause of these accidents. This needs to stop. This includes, driving tired, driver distraction, speed, failing to wear seat belts and drink or drug driving. Take care on the roads; look after yourself, your family and other road users.

You Said It Such wonderful service

Recently I needed to go to Local Specsavers in Beerwah as the lens in my reading glasses kept falling out. I had lost the minute (invisible to the human eye) screw. So I asked the assistant to help with replacing it, and 15 minutes later Debbie came and positioned / adjusted my ‘hardly recognisable’ reading glasses. She had removed the residual of my attempt with sticky tape. She then returned them tumbled, shone, polished and mounted with new pads. A huge thank you to all the Specsavers team in Beerwah for the wonderful service they so pleasantly give. The service that day made my day and was greatly appreciated. Name supplied Beerwah

A warm hinterland ‘Welcome to Dinner’ with the Lions

Local businesses and community groups are coming together to welcome new residents to the Blackall Range. The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range is co-ordinating a ‘Welcome to the Hinterland Dinner’ at Flaxton Gardens Restaurant. Local businesses from Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton have generously donated raffle prizes for the event. Local community groups will showcase their various volunteer organisations and talk about the many opportunities available for new residents to participate in and make new friends. The second dinner, which has been held in this area, follows the extremely successful Lions Club ‘Welcome Dinner’ which is held in September every year in Maleny, and is now in its 10th year. The Club are supported by real estate agents in the region, who are responsible for house sales and rentals, who have embraced the event by encouraging new arrivals to come along to meet new people and learn more about the beautiful area they have settled in. The support from the local businesses and community groups has been overwhelming, but this is very characteristic of the area. Whenever we have asked for help, in events we organise, businesses in the area have always stepped forward to support us. New residents to the area attending the dinner will hear from Dr Nita Lester on local flora and John Major, our resident bush poet, will entertain us with some of his works. The main feature of the night is not speeches, but an opportunity for new residents to mingle with community groups and local residents, make new contacts and some long-time friends. The dinner will be held on Wednesday, April 22 from 6.30pm for 7.00pm. The cost of the two course dinner is $35.00 and tickets are available at the Mapleton Library, Soothe Hair Dressing, Montville and Monty’s and Flair on Fashion in Montville. Don’t miss out, get your tickets soon, as they are limited and based on a first in first served basis. If you require further information please call Phil on 0409 807 751. We look forward to meeting you there. Phil Holmes, Acting President Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range

NBN update

With all the warnings about NBN and its coming Towers of Trouble, what can we pose as an alternative? Over the last few months the various Tower Action groups across Maleny district posing questions about NBN policy and roll-out have discovered, through various sources, there is Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) in the ground probably from Maleny to Witta, Witta to Conondale and Conondale to Aherns Road, as well as to Reesville from Maleny. It follows that OFC is probably connecting many parts of the district. This cable delivers faster broadband than towers will. Why isn't NBN using this cable as they have already done the deal in December 2014 to take up much of Testra's infrastructure and use that for delivering broadband in cities? Why not here in Maleny district? And what will they do in Beerwah and Glass House? When questioned in letters to NBN they maintain it’s not possible to do, due to costs and technicalities. When asked to give us comparative costings between towers vs. cable they say its 'commercial in confidence we can't tell you'. When NBN comes to town to tell us where their 40 metre towers are to be they need to be very closely examined on this question. Richard Giles Conondale

No regard for others

Recently when we were doing a ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ activity – we cleaned up six tonne of rubbish from the area of Bells Creek and Roys Road. The photo shows what we come across on one of the dirt roads just off highway where people just dump their rubbish, seemingly with no regard to anybody who has to pick it up. It took four ute loads to clear this site, it was full of household rubbish, waste, furniture etc. Maybe they are just too lazy to take to tip or it is too expensive? Name supplied Bells Creek

Free Financial Information Service Seminars

The new school year always signifies the start a new journey for those students recognised as team leaders and captains of their peers. I was delighted to spend time at many of our local schools including Chevallum, Wamuran, Elimbah, Delaneys Creek, Woodford and Palmwoods, where I was able to personally give my best wishes to all of the students for a great 2015. I also spent time with the Beerwah High School recently for their Chaplaincy Breakfast – I have always been a huge supporter of Chaplains in our schools and pledge to do whatever I can to ensure we look after our Glass House Chaplains in particular. The last few weeks have allowed me the opportunity to catch up with many local people and community organisations. From attending the Maleny Singers AGM to the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Mt Mee Rural Fire Brigade, I have been kept extremely busy and have enjoyed every minute of it. If you would like to see the full list where I have been lately, and photos from my travels, be sure to check out my website www. andrewpowell.com.au.

Last week I celebrated the Ride2School initiative with staff and students at Beerwah State School. The program aims to encourage children to ride, walk, skate or scoot to school to ensure they get the physical activity they need to stay fit and healthy. I was very impressed with the students and parents at Beerwah State School who embraced the initiative and had a bit of fun along the way.

Do you want to learn more about superannuation, pensions or retirement income streams? The Department of Human Services’ Financial Information Service will be holding free seminars in Caloundra, Maroochydore and Noosa during March and April. For more information call my office on 5493 5556, call the Department of Human Services booking area on 136 357 or email fis. seminar.bookings@humanservices.gov.au

Glass House Volunteer Awards on again The ever popular Glass house Volunteer Awards will be held again this year in May to celebrate National Volunteers Week – this year the national theme is ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’. We will be doing our best in Glass House to ensure that we take the time to recognise Volunteers in our community who give happily to others and make them feel appreciated for what they do. More information will be released in coming weeks but if you already have someone in mind for an award, contact the office by email or phone and we will send a nomination form your way.

Fighting for Projects and Promises As a new Government has been formed and as we approach the beginning of a new Parliament there are a number of projects the LNP had put forward for the Hinterland that must take place. I will be writing to the new Premier asking for the following to be kept.

Mooloolah Memorial Oval Funding of $250K would go to restoring Mooloolah’s 100 year old Memorial Oval with a plaque dedicated to the soldiers who fought in World War One. The residents of Mooloolah have spoken and they believe, as do I, that restoring the oval will ensure locals have a multi-sport area.

Railway Duplication from Beerburrum to Landsborough and extra parking at Landsborough Station Under the LNP’s plan, $532 million was committed as part of the Public Transport Rail Infrastructure along with 150 additional services. Further to this, 3,000 jobs would be created along with an extra 112 car spaces built at Landsborough Station.

Steve Irwin Way and the Beerwah Forest For a long time I have been trying to make an appointment with the Regional Director of Main roads who would not meet with me earlier this year due to Government being in Caretaker mode. They have now referred me to the Ministers office. Whilst I have not yet had a reply I am hoping to meet them in the first week of Parliament. On January 27 I was invited to attend the ‘Save the Forest’ gathering at Daisy’s Place. I have made my feelings clear that the current upgrade to Steve Irwin Way and the Bruce Highway should be altered significantly to preserve the Beerwah Forest. I am currently working with Aussie World businesses that will be adversely affected and with businesses that employ locals and are not part of multinational companies as well as koala focused organisations to locate the number of koalas in the Beerwah Forest. These are the promises the LNP Government made and I will be putting forward each initiative for the future of the Hinterland.

Our office will be closed at 3.00pm on Tuesday, March 31 and reopen 9.00am on Wednesday, April 8 There will be no paper published on Wednesday, April 8 MARCH 18 2015 |

Moxibustion is a group of techniques that involve burning moxa on acupuncture points, in a special box and on needle heads, to facilitate healing. Moxibustion warms cold and moves blood to help alleviate pain and promote blood flow. There are various techniques for the use of moxa and in certain cases it can be used instead of needles. For more information on this or any other aspects of Chinese Medicine please feel welcome to come in for a chat.

Health Matters

with Braxton Turnage

Are you mindful of your posture? We often hear that good posture is essential for good health, but very few people have a real grasp of the importance of good posture - the position we hold our bodies while standing, sitting or lying down. Good posture is the correct alignment of body parts supported by the right amount of muscle tension against gravity. Poor posture is often the cause of neck and back pain, especially in the neck and shoulder region. Postural imbalance also compresses your internal organs, reducing their efficiency and normal function. This may cause such issues as respiratory problems, chest tightness, high blood pressure or poor digestion. Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of poor posture. It takes a lot of energy to hold the body in an awkward position, and, in turn, alters our breathing capacity which can be diminished by up to 30%. Follow this advice for standing, sitting and lying properly: •When sitting, keep your feet flat on the floor with a small gap between the back of your knees and the front of your seat. Your knees should be at or below the level of your hips. •When standing, bear your weight primarily on the balls of your feet and keep your knees slightly bent. Your feet should be about shoulderwidth apart and your earlobes should be in line with your shoulders to keep your head from jutting forward, backward or to the side. •Avoid sitting or standing in the same position for long periods of time. •Sleep with a pillow and avoid lying on your stomach. If you sleep on your side, place a pillow between your legs. If you sleep on your back, keep a pillow under your knees. http://whatsyourposture.com.au/posture-health/

By Bev Dooley Operating seven days a week, it is very rare for the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre to be closed. However, due to the weather effects surrounding Cyclone Marcia, and the concerns for the safety of our Volunteer Ambassadors, we were out of business for two days last month. With the advantage of the centre being elevated, excess water only affected access. It’s the first time I have seen a lake around us and not a park! Great to see we are back to lush green and sunshine again. With the cooler months nearly upon us, walks are at the forefront of a lot of our visitors’ minds. To extend our knowledge we have a visit from the local rangers this month to update us on parks and walks, both on the flat and in the mountains. It’s quite a mammoth task keeping up-to-date with closures and the accessibility of some of the tracks but this is invaluable information available to all the information centres. Later this month, our Volunteer Ambassadors will also attend a Trade Show morning with over 50 local tourism members at Aussie World. Again, this will be an opportunity to learn about new Sunshine Coast tourism experiences and products and receive updates on existing attractions, tours and accommodation. We are extending our range of small goods in the centre to include ‘Hinterland Feijoas’ products - these are a fabulous range of jams and chutneys produced right here on the Sunshine Coast, and of course the usual very popular Bush Honey. If you would like to consider volunteering with us, why not come in and have a chat?

Wishes for Wes

A Shopping Spree on Us! By Sonia Clark

By Sonia Clark The community spirit is strong as locals rally behind Glenview man Wes Stephen, who was involved in a dreadful head-on collision a little under a fortnight ago along Frizzo Road at Palmview. The father of two young children has been hospitalised with serious facial and spinal injuries, leaving him with a potentially long road to recovery, and his future working prospects up in the air. Close friends of the family have banded together to organise a variety of local fundraising activities to help ease the financial and emotional burden now facing the Stephen family. The Glenview school community has thrown its support behind the family with a student free dress day fundraiser held last Friday, donation baskets for non-perishable items in every classroom, and a donation tin for vouchers and cash at the school office. A community raffle is currently being organised with generous donations already being received. Last week Wes was fitted for a spinal brace with the prospect of limited mobility for at least three months. Recovery will take up to six months, and as the main breadwinner with a young family, the economic pressure will be immense. www.gcnews.com.au

Wes with his young family For those wishing to assist in any way or to make a donation, a dedicated Facebook page has been established, alternatively for more information email wishesforwes@hotmail.com Facebook.com/ wishesforwes

This year for the first time ever, the Maleny Show Society are running a great competition to tie in with the 2015 Maleny Agricultural Show. ‘Have a shopping spree on us’, will see the show society giving away $3,000.00 in local shopping vouchers. Each day there will be two separate draws, the first draw will be $500.00 in vouchers, followed by the second draw of $1,000.00 in vouchers. To enter all you have to do is to make sure when you go to the show, you fill out your entry form and get it in the draw before 5.00pm. And most importantly to be in the running to win, the person whose name appears on the winning entry form/s, must be present at the draw at 5.00pm. The competition will be drawn in the main arena at the showgrounds, and if you are lucky enough to be a winner, make sure you can show some photo ID to claim your prize. In the case of a winner not being present at the draw, The Maleny Show Society will redraw every five minutes until a winner is present, and a prize is claimed for each individual draw. For further details or to find out more about other competitions and events at this years’ 78th Maleny Agricultural show, check out www.malenyshowsociety.org.au or like their Facebook page/malenyshowsociety. The show is at the Maleny Showgrounds, on Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30. See you there! MARCH 18 2015 |

Pink Euodia

Melicope elleryana This ornamental hardy native tree is a fantastic addition to any garden. The stunning pink fragrant flowers are a spectacle. Pink Euodia (pronounced yoo-OH-dee-uh) can be found on stream banks on the Clarence River up to the northern tropics. Pink Euodia is a hardy tree to about 10m, and in its natural habitat can grow to 25m. The leaves are a stunning green and are opposite and trifoliate, darker on top. This versatile plant grows well in a range of soils and likes to be well watered and fertilised. Pink Euodia is a food source for the Chequered and Orchard Swallowtail butterfly larvae as well as the Ulysses from Far North Qld. Nectar feeders such as Parrots, Rainbow Lorikeets, Honeyeaters, and also King Parrots feed on the seed.

Hoya australis There are many species of this beautiful plant found and grown across the tropical parts of the world. Many of us are familiar with the range of colours, particularly pink Hoyas, grown in pots on a trellis or hanging basket. The most common species found in Australia is Hoya australis though a number of sub-species of this plant exist. What we may not be aware of is that we have a species of Hoya native to our own area. Native wax flower is a Glass House Mountains plant found in rocky areas of our local area. It grows naturally as a vine or trailing plant in dry rainforest or over rocky cliffs. Leaves are opposite, thick and fleshy and the plant has milky sap. The beautiful flowers, mostly white, are borne in clusters of up to 20 and are highly perfumed. Hoya australis is a host plant for the larvae of the Common Crow Butterfly. Plants grow readily from cuttings.

The Power of manners

C

I heard someone say recently ‘Manners Makes the Man’ … it was a saying that kind of stuck with me; it is an easy one to remember, hey. Sometimes people have an aversion to being polite because they don’t see the point. I want to argue that not only is there ‘a point’ to having manners but that it is beneficial to our community as a whole. In the bible, Proverbs 12 verse 25 says ‘Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.’ I think this is a great explanation of the benefits of people using manners. Benefits for others - life gets really hard sometimes and it is amazing how much a simple ‘thank you’ can lift people out of negativity or restore their faith in people. I think the main message that people receive when someone uses manners is respect. Benefits for you - using manners is also good for you because the person you are being polite to will usually respond back in a respectful way. GCNEWS Add sept 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM Using manners and being polite can also reduce your stress levels because people around you MOOLOOLAH: Sun 10 am Public Hall, Bray Rd

will see you as a respectful person. Modelling: We all know that kids are like sponges, they take in what they see, hear and experience around them – both good and bad. Sometimes they can filter out the bad stuff their parents and rolemodels do, but more often they don’t – they just take it on board. Practice: Our kids need to practice using manners; they won’t pick it up overnight. As parents and rolemodels we need to encourage and remind our kids to use their manners. So let’s start a manners revolution! If you’re a young person reading this, I want to challenge you to set an example to the adults around you in the way you speak to others. If you are an adult, think about the young people around you who you could model great manners to. They will follow your lead… that’s what kids do.

Sport Glasshouse Bowls

Powerhouse Jade Sharp Now only two week's away, the Maleny District Sports & Recreation Club 2015 Awards Dinner welcomes Olympic gymnast and weightlifter, Jade Sharp, as the after dinner guest speaker. Mother of two boys aged five and six, Jade's achievements in two gruelling sports are outstanding. As an Olympic weightlifter, Jade won silver at the 2013 State Championships. A gymnast on the National team for three years, she was also an injured member of the 1996 Olympic Team. She is a gymnastics coach and trainer at state and national level, and currently still coaches her own mum and dad, also coaching CrossFit and weightlifting. Jade coaches a range of programs, from PMP school programs, Kindergym, Levels 1-10, for adults, teenagers and elite gymnasts. Her business, Gymnastics Method, specialises in body weight strength and movement education. Still finding time to help out at the local soccer club, when asked about her own motivation, and the real life challenges faced daily as a busy mum, business woman and athlete, Jade said she believes sport is one of life’s greatest teachers. “The people involved in running sport and rec programs at the local level are the backbone of communities and are, to me, a community’s greatest asset," she said. Jade teaches that the human body is designed to run, jump, kick, hit, swing, climb, push, pull, invert - and that all of these actions are movements. "Life is Movement. Sport is movement and it truly is, for the whole community," she said. You can hear more at the Awards Dinner on Saturday, March 28, 6.00pm at Tranquil Park Maleny. We hope you've got your table booked for this great night of entertainment, awards and dinner. The evening recognises and awards Maleny's outstanding achievers and clubs, and we are

Just for Laughs

It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional

What is that bloody academic talking about? A research team proceeded towards the apex of a natural geologic protuberance, the purpose of their expedition being the procurement of a sample of fluid hydride of oxygen in a large vessel, the exact size of which was unspecified. One member of the team precipitously descended, sustaining severe damage to the

upper cranial portion of his anatomical structure. Subsequently the second member of the team performed a self-rotational translation oriented in the same direction as taken by the first team member. Translate this into English and you have…….Jack and Jill! Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 New Moon’s usually signal the end of one thing and the blossoming of another. This total new Moon eclipse moves from the last degree of Pisces, being endings, and moves into March 21 at the equinox in the sign of Aries. A lively adventure may beckon, but this is not the time to overdo. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Keep your agenda flexible for this weekend, you will find yourself better off setting your own independent course otherwise you could end up wasting time waiting around for others! This new Moon total eclipse heralds correspondence to relatives and arranged short trips with urgency. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 With two major planets in retrograde motion such as Jupiter and Sagittarius, you need to put your ideals into income earning areas, but don’t chase pipe dreams too early. This is because there is a new Moon total eclipse in Aries on March 21 which gets you revved up to get out and about. PISCES February 20 – March 20 The new Moon eclipse on Friday falls in the last degree of your sign, most likely bringing in reminders of work that needs to get done and goals that are left to attain. Whatever plan you come up with by the evening sees the Moon move into Aries bringing success with some new projects.

LEO July 23 – August 22 By the weekend the new Moon arrives in the adventurous sign of Aries and may end a matter connected to shared monies and begins a subtle transformation with new partners. So for the next month with the Sun entering the Aries sign, life becomes a bold new adventure for you! VIRGO August 23 – September 22 What a weekend you will have under this new Moon eclipse on Friday! This equinox period focuses you on giving consideration for the next months to the potential merits of a new partnership or agreement. The emphasis then will be in a great teamwork, marriage or partnership. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 With your ruling planet Venus in Aries for the first two thirds of this month, followed by the Sun and Uranus, there is massive excitement in your chart for having a thrilling partner and progressive life from the new Moon in Aries on March 20 this weekend. Enjoy shared values together. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The planet Jupiter being retrograde in Leo will test out your love and emotional life this weekend. Under the total eclipse of the new Moon, by the weekend, your challenge is to handle any uncertainty calmly and not be in a rush to resolve any issues. Avoid risky actions at this time.

Week beginning 18/03/2015 ARIES March 21 – April 20 Simple actions and small gains can be very satisfying. The new Moon for the weekend, reminds you that you can’t fix what is wrong in your everyday world, unless you fix what is wrong on the inside! You seek unrestrained personal expression and freedom. Jupiter favours you. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Inner conflicts erupt as several planets move through your 12th sector so all you need to do is to clear away some debts, correct past mistakes and find necessary work. The new Moon on the weekend tells you that new initiatives concerning friends were on hold but are now ready for go. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 The new Moon this weekend stirs up your imagination about what to do in your public life. The weekend, which happens to be the equinox, commences long days of energetic, compulsive, emotional changes. Try to mingle with important people taking on big responsibilities. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This weekend commences a new six month attention on your educational interests. You will only achieve the greatest success by formulating a long term program and getting plans and ideas approved with your partner. Subtle messages arrive to give you new perspectives now.
