Hi Everyone...
on the Cover
Well this is column number 48 for the year and I have just looked back to what I wrote on January 15 in the first column for 2018. Apparently then I was feeling relaxed, energised and ready to take on the world. Wow, what a difference 47 weeks can make! Hopefully at this point in the year I am not totally stressed, cranky and unmotivated, although others might be a better judge of that. This has been a year full of change for us, and not always about us creating change, but more often about how we deal with change. Much has happened - some good, some bad - and for us some very sad with the passing of one of our most dependable delivery staff, Shane Old. It is a strange thing about loss, how deeply it reminds you of the importance of being thankful and appreciative of all of the good things in our lives. As this year comes to an end, I know that we are fortunate to have a great team of people around us, to live in a wonderful community that is filled with lots of kind and generous people and to appreciate how important it is that we continue to look out for each other and to take care of those around us. I hope you all have a relaxed and enjoyable Christmas and a safe and Regards, happy New Year!

Empowering those with diverse abilities By Sonia Clark Studio23 is a new not-for-profit learning and social hub developed by a group of students, parents and educators in the Maleny area who identified a lack of local educational and social opportunities for people with diverse abilities. Located in The Deck Room at the Maleny Community Centre, Studio23 seeks to empower people with diverse abilities to socialise, work, create and learn. Group coordinator and long-term Maleny resident Kris FitzGerald said the aim was to provide courses for people with a disability and disadvantaged people in the community. Last Tuesday, December 11, the group held its first community consultation day. As well as raising awareness, the day included an informative presentation by Parent2Parent called 'Staying safe Freedom from abuse and neglect’. Drawing on beautifully presented videos made with actors with a disability, the presentation served to highlight the different types of abuse that people with diverse abilities can encounter. “Developed by a Melbourne-based group called VALID [Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability], the presentation contained essential information for all people in our community of diversity - to understand and be able to advocate for themselves in difficult circumstances,” Kris said. Currently Studio23 operates on Tuesdays,

Our two teachers, Craig Cole and Melanie McVie, are expert disability support workers and teachers,” Kris said. Future courses will include art, social enterprise, photography, craft and social days. The social enterprise course will empower members to join in with the community to make products to sell at a market day every month. This activity will assist members on how to produce, market and sell their products leading to more independence in their lives. To find out more visit studio23maleny.org.

When the dream becomes reality
Just 12 months ago Beerwah residents Barry and Aannsha Jones had a dream to buy a yacht and sail the world. One year on, how has the reality matched up to their dream? Through the wonder of satellite and international connectivity GC&M News caught up with our intrepid sea nomads to see how their year has panned out. They spent Christmas and New Year 2017-2018 in Javea, Spain at Barry's brother's apartment, which was their base for the next four months while they searched the internet for a suitable yacht to buy. Barry said that at this point they still didn't know anything about sailing and had never set foot on a yacht! In February the couple drove a rental car south through Spain to Gibraltar where they spent the next 17 days living on board a 36-foot sailing school yacht, literally learning the ropes. Departing Gibraltar, they twice visited several
ports in Spain and a port on the North African coast. The day before they were about to finish the course, while sailing back to Gibraltar, they had to plough through a force 8 storm with wind gusts up to 39 knots! Apparently you should never buy the first boat you see. But that's what ended up happening when they looked at a 1995 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.1 located near Murcia, Spain. Aannsha said other yachts were inspected but none of them compared with the first one they saw and they got very lucky with the broker they were dealing with. "With a deposit paid, work began on having the yacht surveyed and getting some repairs and modifications done," Barry said. "We spent the next three months living in the marina at San Pedro Del Pinatar near Murcia. On Saturday July 14, with all the work completed and the final invoice paid, the newly named yacht ‘A B Sea’ slipped from her mooring in the marina ready for a 30-day shakedown cruise to the Spanish Balearic Islands," Aannsha said. "However just three miles out disaster struck, when the main sheet block that controls the movement of the boom literally exploded into fragments. "Thinking quickly, we managed to put away the main sail and get a line around the boom to stop it swinging wildly before it did any damage. "By the time we returned to the marina it was Saturday afternoon and departure was reset for the following morning," Aannsha said.
BEERWAHFAMILYCLINIC
Their month-long shakedown cruise took in the islands of Formentera and Ibiza before returning to the marina for two weeks to have a couple of things tweaked. Then the adventure began for real. Calling in assistance from a long-time friend and his fiancé who have lots of sailing experience, they all departed the Spanish marina on Tuesday, September 4 with Greece as the original planned destination. The journey of 1,911 nautical miles over 25 days had them crossing the Mediterranean Sea from west to east, visiting four countries, navigating the Bonifacio Strait, the Messina Strait and the Corinth Canal, stopping off at nine Greek islands and eventually ending up in Kaş, Turkey, where they will spend the northern hemisphere winter months. "For a couple of new sailors who had never even set foot on a yacht before February 2018 we think we've achieved quite a lot," Barry said. You can follow Barry and Aannsha on their amazing adventure via their weekly videos on YouTube youtube.com/sailingabsea or through their weekly blogs at absea.com.au/blogs or via instagram.com/sailingabsea/

A suite of new planning applications was submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council last week over the large block of vacant land in Moroney Place, Beerwah. This follows an application for the Go Green Landscaping site redevelopment on the nearby trade centre and industrial park, recently reported in GC&M News (November 28). The three new applications – for a property boundary realignment, a material change of use and an operational works permit – look to pave the way for a hardware and trade supples warehouse to be constructed over a large portion of the land. All previous development applications over this parcel of land have now lapsed and are invalid. The proposed subdivision will realign the boundary between Lot 4 on RP906262 and Lot 130 on RP899856 to increase the area of Lot 4 from 1,014 m² to 5,908 m². The increased lot size will provide additional site area for the trailer manufacturing business currently located on Lot 4. The remainder of Lot 30, which is owned by Upton Trading Pty Ltd, is the subject of the other applications for the hardware and trade supples warehouse. Upton Trading owns a group of timber and construction supply companies across Australia, including The Bunker currently on the other side of Moroney Place from the proposed development.

According to the planning report, about a fifth of the lot will be used for the proposed building, ancillary facilities and surrounds. If the building schematics and signage are correct, it appears The Bunker will move into the new facility from across the road, possibly expanding its range of building materials in line with the increase in available floor space. The 7.5m high structure will be constructed of concrete tilt panel walls with large roller shutter doors, providing a fairly stark industrial look to the building. It will sit directly opposite Beerwah Complete Automotive. The plans show minimal landscaping at the front and rear of the building, with most of the nonbuilding footprint being hard surfaces. A grassy area and a bioretention basin are shown adjoining the forestry land at the rear. There are no identified plans to develop the remainder of the site (Lot 30), but the planning report states that the applicant is going to “… obtain expressions of interest from genuine end users to facilitate the creation of effective industrial lots that will accommodate purpose-built developments that are aligned to lots sizes”. The development has been classed as ‘code assessable’ meaning the public will have no opportunity to make formal submissions. To see all the application details, go to developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘MCU18/0333’.

Community News Jill deserves a trophy for 17 years of hard work If you have been involved in a local sporting or community group or a local school, you’ve probably come into contact with some of Jill Kirchheiner’s handiwork. At presentation events where trophies, medals and awards are handed out, it’s likely that the engraving has been thanks to Jill in her business Beerwah & District Trophies. It’s been that way for more than 17 years and Jill has now decided that she would like to get her days back. Jill said it all started in 2001 when she mentioned to Kathy and Bevan Dale (the previous owners) that she was “thinking of doing something to keep me busy while my two boys were in primary school”. “They said that I might like to think about buying the business from them. I did and I’ve never looked back since,” she said. Jill has always run the business from her home, but has grown the business both in regular customers and in the equipment she uses. “It all started with a hand-held etcher. You’d put together one line of text using a template, secure the metal plate underneath and then carefully scribe the words following the template. “If I had to do 50 inscribed plates, I’d always do 10 or more extras as there would inevitably be some mistakes or slips,” she said. But computerisation made the job so much more efficient with the computer-controlled etcher leaving little room for mistakes.

Jill Kirchheiner (right) hands over the reigns to Jo and Rod Eccles from TFM Awards Some of Jill’s original clients still have work done by her, such as The Big Kart Track. Other groups that Jill does trophies for include Beegees United Football Club, Maleny State School, Tibro’s Netball Club, Maleny Show and the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club. The business has become so hectic in recent years that Jill’s husband Alan was also called in to help, which meant time away from the golf course for him. Jill has finally had enough of working seven days a week, and the decision to sell her business this year was relatively easy. However, there is good news for her long-term customers, as the new owners aren’t moving the business far. Rod and Jo Eccles have bought her out and will include all her work in their existing TFM Awards business in Beerwah.
Rod and Jo are long-term locals who have run the awards, framing and trophies business for many years – firstly as Frame D’Art, then taking on Trophies Won and combining them into TFM (trophies, framing, memorabilia) Awards. Jill is more than confident that her business is in good hands with Rod and Jo. “They’ve got some really top-class equipment that can do more than mine ever could,” Jill said. “And they’re very experienced, so I’m very happy that all my fantastic customers will be taken very good care of.” Although she’ll be looking forward to a few more games of lawn bowls, Jill will miss the wonderful relationships with her customers she has developed over the years. “I love hearing all the stories of the people who will be receiving my trophies. It’s really nice to feel that I’ve been able to play a small part in a time of their happiness and success,” Jill said. Rod and Jo are grateful that Jill will still be around to call on for advice and guidance from time to time. “Jill has a lot of accumulated knowledge and information about what each of her customers like and want … so we’ll be making sure we keep in touch with her so that things run smoothly for us and for the customers,” Rod said. “We’re looking forward to continuing on Jill’s great work and are excited that we will be able to expand on the range of work we can offer. “We thank Jill for all her hard work, and wish her well in her semi-retirement.”

Local author publishes new novel Glass House Mountains author Dean Jacobs recently released his new novel, ‘Holmes’. After successfully chasing down Jack the Ripper and exposing the illusive serial killer in his Whitechapel series, Dean has now turned his attention to another Victorian cult figure, the ever deductive Sherlock Holmes; but this time Holmes enters the 21st century. It is present day London and metropolitan police officer Sherwood Lachlan Holmes, who is average in every way, has been involved in a bomb blast while on duty. He wakes up in a psychiatric hospital some months later, but he is not the same. His IQ has spiked to genius levels, his speech is distinctly Victorian and his vocabulary has impressively expanded. His attending psychiatrist, Dr Jill Watson, notices through her examinations that his deductive powers of observation are unique and exemplary, though his arrogance and belittlement of the “imbecilic” human race is difficult to tolerate. When a number of bodies are discovered around London, each with elaborate clues and notes left, Watson is called upon by the chief of police, George Engel, to explore the mind of a serial killer. Little does she know that her annoying patient ‘Lock’ will be the key to solving the deadly game of cat and mouse. “After becoming so intimate with everything Jack the Ripper for the best part of a decade, I wanted to branch out and explore a modern tale, but with
sprinklings of Victorian; an era that is inherently intriguing,” Dean said. “Creating the Whitechapel series, involving Jack the Ripper, allowed me to write as a first person character, embroiled in the most famous murder case in history.” Dean has created this work of fiction by further exploring his doctoral thesis examining the role of visual text in the traditional novel. He creates detailed illustrations with meticulous symbolic values to allow the reader a small visual insight into the written text. A blend of hand-drawn and digitally created works of art are employed throughout the text, providing another dimension of understanding to cater for a diverse literary range of reader. “The vast spectrum of reading levels can generally be at differing stages of literary comprehension. Some digest words and comprehend written texts more effectively, whereas others prefer reading visually and can decipher images to better understand meaning,” Dean said. ‘Holmes’ is available now and can be purchased for $20 by emailing info@deanjacobs.com.au or by searching ‘Holmes’ on Facebook.

POLICE BEAT Christmas holidays The end of the year is upon us – Christmas, New Year and of course school holidays. We know that thieves are generally opportunistic, looking for easy targets so it’s important to ensure that your home is not an easy target. In the warm weather a lot of us spend much more time outside which means many of our possessions can end up on back patios or outdoor settings. It also means windows and doors are often left open to help circulate air through the house. Unfortunately, this can make things very easy for offenders. Car keys, phones, tablets and even children’s toys are all attractive targets for thieves. Please make sure these and other valuables are locked away at night and when you are not home. If you are going away, it’s important to make sure that you use the security features you have in place. This includes key locking doors and windows where available, putting valuables out of sight and securing tools and ladders and other things that could be used to help gain access to your house. If you are away for an extended period, arrange for someone to check on your property. Perhaps ask a neighbour to collect your mail and put your bins out while you are away, or even park a car in your driveway occasionally to make the property look occupied.

Holiday road safety This time of year can be a difficult time on our roads, increased traffic can cause congestion on our local roads and I’m sure we are all aware of the impact even a minor incident on the Bruce Highway can have if it occurs in peak times. It’s important to remember that it’s better to be late than not arrive at all. Give yourself time to get to your destination. Check traffic conditions before you start your journey and be patient. Drive to conditions. Wet roads in summer can be very slippery and require a significant increase in braking distance, so give yourself room to get out of trouble. Special thanks Thanks as always to our Volunteers in Policing – Vikki and Brian – for all their assistance throughout the year. Thanks also to everyone that helps to make our Blue Light Dance Parties so successful … the volunteers who help on the night and all the kids that attend and have such a great time. And to our sponsors including Beerwah IGA, Beerwah Woolworths, Aussie World, Big Kart Track and Australia Zoo. They all make my job so easy. And a final thank you to the lovely Norma who regularly spoils us with treats for morning tea. Have a great Christmas and New Year everyone. See you all next year.

Sharing in time for Christmas Maleny Arts and Crafts Group (MACG) has previously contributed to the Downs and West Community Support (DWCS), an organisation run by the Sisters of Charity to provide important assistance to farming families. This year, a MACG member had a conversation with a group of country women at the Ekka, who said they would like to have some nice soap and Sr Christine, with her companion a new toothbrush. One of the women “Prince Henry” and MAGG said she had been using the same toothbrush for 12 months and couldn’t president Anita Turner afford a new one. MACG members decided to lend a hand. In October the members set a goal to collect various items to make up 50 toiletry bags. They sought contributions from family and friends as well as the members of the CWA Palmwoods branch. Many of the bags were made by members of the MACG quilting group. A number of generous Maleny businesses donated to the project, including The Soap Bar that contributed 50 cakes of the most heavenly scented soap. The Dental Centre Maleny, the Star Discount Chemist and Dr Martin Webb from the Banksia House Dental Surgery all donated toothpaste. In total the group filled 104 bags, as well as some extra toiletry items. Boxed gift sets, soft toys and clothing for children, glass ornaments for Christmas trees and various other gifts were also collected. MACG also raised $1,130.50 that will be used to buy vouchers to be spent in the local towns. Sister Christine Henry from DWCS visited the MACG quilting group in Maleny to collect the donations last week. The following day she travelled to Roma to distribute the gifts to farming families in the area who are currently facing challenging times.
Local Lions drought appeal tops $26,000
Through the generosity of the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range, in collaboration with a number of other local organisations and residents, a mammoth $26,200 has been raised for those affected by the western Queensland drought. About half the money was transferred to the Lions Club of Charleville for distribution to the community and the other half to the Western Queensland Drought Appeal. The organisations that contributed to the overall Lion Dave Shoobridge t who initiated the projec total included the Maleny Garden Club and the Montville State School, as well as the community of with the Tambo Teddy Mapleton with the entire proceeds of the Mapleton and District Community Association music festival contributed to the appeal. The community of Tambo benefited from the first round of money distributed and sent a letter of thanks as well as a Tambo Teddy in recognition. Charleville Lions has received about $15,000 to date and currently has a project distributing quantities of stock salt licks throughout the district. The licks nutritionally supplement the mulga that is often the only vegetation remaining for cattle. Their purchase and distribution through two local stock feed outlets, as well as the local mail and transport contractors, also supports affected families in the area and in Charleville itself. The Lion Club would like to thank all of the organisations involved and all of the retailers who allowed them to put buckets on their counters for a few weeks and to the individual residents who contributed to the appeal personally. Every cent collected has gone directly to the people who need it most.

Where’s Collarenebri?
Brian can assure readers that it will make a great Christmas present, but he reckons you should read it first as it’s a great read and has plenty of laughs. Brian's first book was about his life as a police officer titled ‘Inside story - a cop's true tales’, which was bought by people from across the world.
Glass House Mountains retiree Brian Stallworthy has recently published his second book, ‘Growing up in Collarenebri NSW 1944–1964’. Brain describes the book as being full of funny true short stories about his hometown of Collarenebri, where he grew up. If you do not know where Collarenebri is, Brian says you definitely will after reading the book. “It will also bring back memories to many about their childhood and the antics people got up to in a small country town,” he said. The book also has some great poetry and facts going back to the 1800s. You can buy the book from the Beerburrum Post Office at $15 a copy or through Facebook PayPal at a cost of $20, including postage.

Have fun and be water safe these holidays With Christmas almost here, Darren and Andrina (Andy) Tribbeck, owners of Poolwerx Nambour and Burpengary, would like to sincerely thank all their customers and staff for an incredible year in 2018. Andy said they had very much appreciated the local community’s support for both their businesses and the entire team at Poolwerx had enjoyed looking after their existing customers and also meeting new faces during the year. “Our customers have been fantastic and we just want to say a massive thank you for supporting us and we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and holiday break. Darren and I would also like to acknowledge our wonderful team members who have consistently delivered brilliantly – our awesome team has been one of our greatest assets,” Andy said. With end-of-year festivities and the holiday season here, Andy would also like to highlight the importance of water safety as many families
will be enjoying summer activities near the water. With more time spent in the pool, near dams and at the beach, Andy reminds people that it is important to have fun but always have a responsible person keeping an eye on those in or near water. Poolwerx has also teamed up with the Kids Alive water safety initiative and Andy would like to remind people about the easy to remember safety messaging through the motto ‘Kids alive – do the five!’. “Poolwerx is very happy to partner and promote the Kids Alive message this holiday season – so remember to fence the pool, shut the gate, teach your kids to swim – it’s great, supervise – watch your mate and learn how to resuscitate!”
Andy and the team look forward to helping their customers get the most out of their pool time these holidays and wish all their customers a fun and festive holiday season. Edie
For 30 years Edie (Sheila Hancock) has nursed her controlling, difficult husband George following a stroke. Then he dies, leaving her lost and directionless. She feels she will die with all her regrets intact. One regret haunts her most. Many years ago, her father wanted to take her to the Scottish Highlands to climb Suilven Mountain but George prevented her from going. Now Edie somehow musters the courage to leave her unsupportive daughter to undertake the arduous hike. Described as “a triumph of risktaking over regret and resolution over resignation”, this British film will resonate with many viewers. The stunning Highlands landscape and the heart-warming connection between Edie and her young guide Jonny add to the film's charm. It's worth mentioning that Sheila Hancock (82 at the time) actually completed the climb herself. After accepting the role, she was taken to view the imposing 731m peak, never imagining for a moment that she would be expected to climb it herself. Generations connect through Christmas greetings
This year the Maleny High School P&C looked at ways to help support students to engage with the local community. P&C president Danielle Watt said the campaign was extremely rewarding not just for the students but for the P&C members as well. “We recently reached out to a local aged care facility to see how our students and school might connect with the residents this Christmas, and the decision was made that Christmas cards would be appreciated,” Danielle said. The 100 Christmas cards required were generously donated by the family of a P&C member and the students went to work writing messages so that each of the elderly residents would receive a card. Danielle said that the number of students who wanted to take part was extraordinary with the cards being completed over several days by many different students. “We were honestly overwhelmed by the number of students who wanted to participate,” she said. “As a parent and a member of the P&C it warms my heart to see our students helping to bridge the gap between themselves and the elderly local residents, and we are looking forward to continuing to do this year after year. “We would like to thank our school principal Deborah Stewart who is such a positive and dedicated leader and has been so supportive of all of the students’ projects within the community,” Danielle said.

Cancellation of Christmas festival
With dramatic weather predictions last week of thunderstorms, heavy rain and wind, Maleny Commerce was forced to cancel this year’s Maleny Christmas Festival and Street party planned for Friday, December 14. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton thanked the small band of volunteers - Mark Burgunder, Colin and Lindel Keilly, Rev Scott Kroeger, Jenni Matthews and Maleny Commerce’s secretary Karen Shaw - who had worked tirelessly over the past few months to create what is always a fun family community event. “We know how disappointing cancelling the event is for our town and how disappointing it is for Karen and her team. However, as always our priority is ensuring the safety of the community,” Nicole said.

Christmas Tree Festival to delight
How many ways can you interpret the theme ‘Christmas growing up’? Visitors to the annual Christmas Tree Festival at Maleny Uniting Church are about to find out. The church building will be filled with more than 40 trees and displays all depicting this year’s theme of Christmas growing up. Festival coordinator Murray Robertson said the festival was not a competition and through the many displays you can expect multiple interpretations of the theme. “Some trees will reflect the Christmas we know from when we were growing up, and I am sure size will be a big factor,” Murray said. “Others may provoke thoughts about how our attitude to Christmas changes as we grow older,” he said. Children will be well catered for at the festival. While the trees will captivate them, there will also be plenty of hands-on activities including the Kids Play Zone, which includes a choice of activities, craft, quizzes and Christmas books. Each year the festival sponsors a local charity and this year it is Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The centre provides much needed assistance to people who need a helping hand, which can often be the case at Christmas. Entry to the Christmas Tree Festival is free, but visitors are invited to make a gold coin contribution to the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. So put ‘Christmas growing up’ on your Christmas to do list. It just might change your feelings about Christmas. The Maleny Uniting Church is located a 1290 Landsborough/Maleny Road, Maleny. Spare a thought for our furry friends this Christmas By Clive Phillips, professor of animal welfare, and Sarah Zito, research coordinator, at the Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics, the University of Queensland. Christmas is typically a time for celebrating and spending time with loved ones. But while we party, give lavish presents and visit our families, we can sometimes overlook how some very important family members — our pets — might be affected. We should give special consideration at this time of year to the animals we love as their lives can be unknowingly thrown into turmoil for several days, or even weeks.
Changing routines
The Christmas holiday period is often a time when our routines change - late nights, leaving the house to visit relatives and going on holiday. Pets don’t understand our complicated lives and rely on a simple routine for happiness. This can be a recipe for trouble. Parties involve noise, lots of people descending on their territory and unusual human behaviour, such as excessive shouting and fireworks. In much of northern Australia, Christmas time coincides with storm season, exacerbating the risks to pets. It’s important to make sure your pets are identified in case they escape. Better still, have a quiet area for them to retreat to. Tips on helping your pets get through the fireworks and a thunderstorm season are available from the RSPCA. If you plan to go away, having a pet minder come to the house is usually the best option, as leaving pets alone for long periods will cause added stress. Toys which trickle feed the animal or frozen water in milk cartons can keep them occupied when the owners are away for short stints. Sending a pet to a kennel or cattery for an extended stay should only be considered if a suitable minder cannot be found, as the change in environment can be similarly stressful for the animal. If you do choose this option, the facility should be carefully inspected to make sure it is set up with the best interests of the animal in mind. You can prepare your pet for their temporary
new home by making sure vaccinations are up to date and taking them for short stays before Christmas. They should arrive with any medications and specific food. And it is best for all involved not to prolong the parting, however guilty you may feel leaving them.
Household hazards
The silly season also brings with it many increased risks to pets around the house that we may be completely unaware of. For example, while many foods we eat at Christmas may seem like a delicious special treat, they can actually be quite dangerous for animals. Poisoning is most common from chocolate, lollies, Christmas
are potentially harmful, including holly, mistletoe, amaryllis, poinsettia and lilies (which are deadly to cats). If your pet has consumed any of these things, symptoms to watch out for are vomiting, diarrhoea and decreased appetite and weight loss. Other things to be mindful of are loose cords, light strands and electrical wires, which can look like tempting toys, especially for adventurous puppies and kittens looking for things to chew.
Giving animals as gifts
pudding/cake, grapes, sultanas, raisins, coffee grounds, alcohol, salt, onions, avocado, garlic, macadamia nuts, anything containing the sweetener xylitol (eg, gum, candy or breath fresheners), cooked bones and anything with chilli in it. Many people like to give their pets a present at Christmas, but it should be suitable and the pet should not be allowed to eat the wrapping paper or string. As many of us know, our animal friends also seem to be curiously drawn to Christmas tree decorations such as tinsel, ribbons, balls, lights, edible chocolates and candy canes, which can be dangerous if consumed. Snow globes, too, can be deadly as they may contain anti-freeze. Be careful when adding preservatives, such as aspirin, to a Christmas tree’s water, as pets may drink it (better still, don’t use aspirin as it doesn’t work on trees). In fact, many plants and flowers commonly used as decorations or gifts at Christmas 18
Thanks to the Sunshine Coast Animal Rescue for sharing their Santa Paws photos
Giving animals as gifts is understandable and can bring a lot of joy to the family over the festive season and beyond. But while research has shown that animals presented as gifts are no more likely to be abandoned than other animals, it’s still important to think carefully about the needs of everyone involved, including the intended pet. Animal shelters, for instance, caution about giving pets at Christmas time as it does not give the recipient time to consider the implications of taking on a new family member. For instance, exotic pets, such as snakes and lizards, require special consideration and should need the person’s consent. One way to overcome the risk of rejection or neglect is to give a voucher for pet purchase, redeemable at shelters, or giving a toy animal with a message that it will be replaced by a live animal at a suitable time. It’s also important to get the animal from a good source, taking care to avoid animals from puppy or kitten farms, where conditions for the animals are generally poor. Buying from an animal shelter is best, where there is usually a large range of breeds and ages to choose from, together with health guarantees for the animals purchased and careful behaviour checks. Our pets should enjoy Christmas too There are ways to make sure pets enjoy Christmas rather than it being a stressful time each year. Suitable treats can be provided with their regular food. Because people have more free time, we can spend some extra quality time with our pets by cuddling on the sofa, brushing them, playing games or going for extra walks. Let’s not be selfish this Christmas, remembering not only the people in the world that are less fortunate than ourselves, but also the many cats, dogs and other animals that need a home and rely on us to ensure the festive season is a happy and healthy one. You Said It Celebrate Glasshouse Country
I am inspired and motivated by the passion and dedication shown by the Celebrate Glasshouse Country group. The group just held its annual general meeting with Glasshouse Country residents, many of whom are also part of wider community groups and businesses. Everyone there showed great enthusiasm for standing up for our part of the world. The group is continually creating and seeking opportunities to strengthen our community, raise our pride for our wonderful Glasshouse Country region and share it with visitors. I encourage people to be part of this positive local group with any time or skill capacity they have. The group can be found on Facebook, website search or email info@celebrategc.com.au. Thumbs up
It’s great to see that our federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace, is continuing to spread the word about our locally published book, ‘The National Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains’. Andrew recently presented the federal Minister for the Environment, Melissa Price, with her own copy. The book, with its well researched information, is available locally and would make a great Christmas present for the kids and resource for the visitors that you will be showing around over the coming holiday season. Health is wealth
My name is Danielle and I am a retired French restaurateur, lecturer and author. I recently moved to the local area and on each Wednesday in December from 10am–2pm I will be opposite First National Real Estate in Simpson Street, Beerwah with copies of my latest recipe book. My recipes are all vegetarian with a French touch. They are simple and tasty, free from dairy, meat, cheese, eggs, sugar and oil and also include delicious baby foods. This book provides advice on to how to start and how to organise your pantry, as well as how to plan your eating habits for optimum health. I will be delighted to meet you and have a chat about health and will be providing my recipe book in exchange for a donation. Danielle Beerwah

Sufficient resources required
Further to the recent article ‘More options for visitors to Glass House Mountains’ that featured in GC&M News (November 28). Clearly the Queensland Government is aware of and cares about the number of visitors coming into the Glass House Mountains region. This is why they are investing in upgrading walking tracks, picnic areas and the lookouts. Why then hasn’t the Sunshine Coast Council reciprocated by ensuring that the native bushland habitat around the Glass House Mountains visitor areas remains healthy and weed free. Efforts must be made to remove exotic weed species such as morning glory, Singapore daisy and exotic tree species such as castor oil trees from the road verges leading up to and around Mount Ngungun, Tibrogargan, Beerburrum and Beerwah as well as the rest of the Glass House Mountains area. Regular attention is given to ensure that the native vegetation around the beaches of the Sunshine Coast remain vibrant and weed free. As a resident I would like similar efforts be made to enhance the experience for international, interstate and local tourists driving around and visiting the Glass House Mountains. Can local government please set aside sufficient resources to remove exotic weeds, grasses and trees to ensure the bushland habitat around the Glass House Mountains is environmentally and ascetically pleasing for those who want to experience the unique beauty of the area. We are fortunate to be able to experience a wild and natural bushland setting that continues to provide food, shelter and dispersal opportunities for our native fauna. Let’s make sure that continues into the future. Wanda (aka Vanda) Grabowski Glass House Mountains
Legalisation of marijuana
A 26-year-old member of parliament in the ACT, Michael Pettersson, is advocating to legalise marijuana, 50g or four plants, per person. He obviously knows nothing and certainly has done no background checking into the dangers of marijuana. As a police officer at the Hornsby police station in NSW, I had thousands of dealings with drugs, especially marijuana. In my last eight years, I was responsible for destroying drugs worth millions of dollars each month. When the new 'marijuana heads' came to the front in the 1990s, I was informed that if four people sat down at a table to smoke these, at least one, if not all four, would be affected and what it does is eat away at the brain and potentially develop schizophrenia. It never ceases to amaze me how these so-called doctors and members of parliament make these statements and say marijuana has no effects upon a person, other than relieving pain.
Marijuana is a noxious weed, it is dangerous and to my mind, should never be made legal. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains
Telstra Bigpond outage disgrace
As of December 12 the Telstra Bigpond service has been out for ten days. I have reported this outage every day in the hope that something would be done to rectify it. The first six times I rang the support line there was a message saying: “We’re aware of an outage in your area. We are working very hard to resolve this problem. At this stage we do not know when this will be fixed”. Now what could possibly take ten days to fix? I rang again this morning and the operator asked me to give them “a few more days”. She says she will ring me on Friday, December 14 with an update. So that will make it 12 days and counting. The operator told me that the problem affected 165 customers - whether that was supposed to be of some comfort to me I don’t know. What an absolutely unacceptable situation Telstra shame on you. Clive Bilby Glass House Mountains Editor’s note Clive updated us with some good news just before we went to print saying: “Isn’t it marvellous what a phone call to the federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace will do”. Low and behold, on Thursday morning his internet was back and he’s assuming Andrew didn’t go and dig up a cable himself!
It’s beginning to feel a lot like … … a federal election.
First sign of the season … election season that is … has appeared as a billboard on Steve Irwin Way between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains. The federal election is due to take place any time before the end of May, so expect to see more of this in the new year. From the sign, you can see that the Australian Labor Party (ALP) endorsed candidate for the seat of Fisher is Daniel Parsell. According to ALP information, Daniel is a 27-year-old electrician currently studying a Diploma of Arts at the University of Southern Queensland – studies he will put on hold to contest the federal campaign in Fisher. Planning ahead, tips to alleviate financial stress this festive season The festive season is upon us and while Christmas is a time for celebration, family, and friends, for many it is also a time for financial stress. There are presents to buy, holidays to save for, dinners and many celebrations. Christmas doesn’t have to mean we stop saving for a first home deposit, or become bogged down by mortgage repayments. This year lending standards have tightened considerably with banks more discerning about who they’ll lend to, and how much they are willing to lend. If you’re planning on taking out a loan in 2019, 22
here are a few things to keep in mind to stay in their good books through the holidays. Don’t get too caught up and completely blow your budget; try to keep a clear head when it comes to spending on entertainment and presents. Make a list of people and the presents you want to give. Make sure the total amount is sensible and within your means. Consider homemade gifts, such as artwork, cards, jams, cake, cookies or photo, and video collages. They often mean more to the receiver and can
cost next to nothing. Check your memberships (e.g. roadside assistance/banks/airlines) in case you can use reward points. Arrange to do Kris Kringle/Secret Santa within the family (everyone gives one gift to one other person). Remember, Christmas is about spending time together and spreading the love. New Year’s Eve: do you really need to spend $500 on a night out? Think about what brings you pleasure – perhaps a casual night in with a few good friends would be just as fun – if not more so.
Enlist the help of Smartlines Teresa Harrison who can work with you to determine how any new debts, assets, expenses or income would affect your borrowing capacity so you won’t have any surprises when you try and take out your next loan.

Hinterland Kids Beerwah students rise and shine Beerwah State High School students Gabby Shaw and Breanne Howden were recipients of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Rise and Shine awards. The Rise and Shine program has been designed to give year 10 students a competitive edge during their senior studies, university preparation and career progression. Throughout their senior schooling, recipients use the program to shape a portfolio of professional qualities, recognised competencies and employability skills. They receive invitations to a variety of interactive workshops, lectures, expert discussions and opportunities, and can choose which to attend based on their interests, strengths and needs.
Best wishes to the year 6 students
Contributed by Kim Fillery Peachester State School celebrated the graduation and individual successes of its six year 6 students last week. The tight-knit group has worked very hard this year, raising money so they could gift the school a commemorative bench seat and spend a day at Blast Aqua Park. Staff, students and their families enjoyed an evening at the Peachester Hall to recognise the completion of the students’ primary school education. The students particularly loved seeing the slide show prepared by their teacher, Mrs Rayner and performed some special pieces choreographed by music specialist Ms Emma Creed. The night was capped off when the students shared their knowledge of the Salsa, teaching their parents and teachers all their best moves.

Santa and his elves visit playgroup
Contributed by Sally Joyce Peachester Playgroup celebrated Christmas earlier in the month with a visit from Santa. Despite the hot conditions, Santa and two helpful elves arrived safely with a sack of wrapped books for every child. Playgroup parents would like to thank Krysty Idle and Megan Holznagel for three years of serving as coordindator and treasurer. During this time the playgroup facilities have been totally transformed. Krysty and her husband Ryan, through their landscaping business Charmak, have replaced all the pavers with concrete, installed ramp access for prams, an entire new playground and a very popular new concrete bike track for the children to ride on. This has been no small effort. For the past seven years Megan has continued to make sure the shed is opened and ready for play each week with craft activities to match. Krysty and Megan will be passing on their roles to the next chapter of playgroup mums and dads who we are sure will continue to keep this great community meeting group growing. We would also like to thank Daniel Joyce for four years of volunteering to mow the grounds. We are always proud of the children moving on to kindy or school, many who go knowing the familiar faces of friends and parents that they met at playgroup. Playgroup operates during school terms so will be taking a break, resuming on Tuesday, January 29 from 9.30am. Anyone in Peachester wishing to attend with their little ones next year please call 0400 175 134 for enquiries. It’s a great way for new parents and new residents to slot into a new community and meet friends for life. We also ask that residents of Peachester continue their excellent neighbourhood watch of our playground during the holidays and we encourage parents of small children to pop in and use the swings during this time.
Sitting on the seat they have gave to the school are Ben, Grace, Malachai, Eadie, Ariel and Montana
Busy final week of school
The last week of school, December 3-6, was a busy one for students of Glasshouse Christian College. Monday night was the prep to year 2 concert where the theme was ‘Children around the world’. Each class sang a song special to a particular country and its traditions. Counties represented were Poland, France, China, Australia, Malawi, Costa Rica, Ghana and the USA. Students dressed in the costume from each country. On Tuesday it was the turn of students in years 3 to 6 and everyone was very thankful for the cover the new sports stadium provided as the heavens opened up. The upper primary had the theme of it being all about the star. Each class sang and danced to songs like ‘Illumination celebration’, ‘Time to shine’, ‘Star gazing’, ‘Away in a manger’ and many other star-themed carols. Songs were interspersed with narration by Super Star, Rock Star, Shooting Star, Fallen Star, Lucky Star and North Star. The night ended with all of the students singing ‘Constellation celebration’. On Wednesday the year 6 students graduated in a moving ceremony that also paid homage to retired head of primary, Mrs Cheryl Bryers. Students put together a special dance, song and tribute to thank Mrs Bryers for her 18-plus years of service to the college. After the presentation of certificates and awards, there was the traditional guard of honour followed by a special afternoon tea and photo time with friends and family. Year 7 students kept busy with billy cart building and racing while year 8 students looked towards concerns in the world that needed attention and support. Year 9 students made gingerbread houses and prepared gifts to take to the local community organisations. What a fantastic way to end a very full year!

Prep transition and happy holidays As the year comes to a close, the educators and children at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre celebrate another hugely successful year of learning, innovation and fun. The year has seen the centre welcome new faces and families, start some exciting new initiatives such as the innovative Bush Kindy program, and strengthen community bonds in the local area. An important milestone at the end of every year is the transition day for the students of the centre’s school readiness room in preparation for their upcoming adventure into ‘big school’. At the end of last month Miss Emma, Miss Dawn and Miss Nikole took groups of children to Glasshouse Mountains State School for their prep transition. Prep transition days are an
important step for children to take in their journey from the school readiness room to school. Early childhood educator Emma explained that these days provided children with an opportunity to meet their potential teachers, get to know other children who will be their classmates next year and become familiar with the school environment. “As the school readiness teacher, I feel it is important to accompany children to these days so that I have the opportunity to meet and talk to the prep teachers about the children and also make sure I have done everything I can to make sure the children in our care are ready for the challenges that they may face in prep,” Emma said. At these transition mornings, children participate in planned activities such as play dough, puzzles, threading, colouring in and collage. They also spend some time as a group on the mat reading a story. The children all had a great time and left the transition days feeling excited for next year and ready to face the giant leap from school readiness into prep and Glasshouse Mountains State School.
Centre coordinator Dee McCaan said that 2018 had been an incredible year of growth at the centre and she thanked the families, children and community for their fantastic support over the year. “On behalf of all the educators and teachers at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre, we would like to wish all families and the community a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. We look forward to sharing our adventures in 2019,” Dee said. If you would like to find out more about the centre and availability for 2019 or the current vacation care program please call 5438 7311, or call in to 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

In the Garden Take the kids to the botanic gardens
Why not get outside to explore nature while enjoying story time with your kids at the Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens these school holidays? Sunshine Coast Libraries and Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens have joined forces to create an innovative way to experience a children’s picture book. From December 15 until January 25, the pages of ‘Koalas eat gum leaves’ will be enlarged and integrated along a pathway in the Botanic Gardens allowing children and their families to read the book on their walk. Sunshine Coast Council community portfolio councillor Jenny McKay said the story walk was an absolutely brilliant idea. “The story that’s been chosen is all about a koala, making it a great way to connect the book and its story with the surrounding environment,” Cr McKay said. “Our guests may even be able to spot Lizzy, the garden’s resident koala, while they are visiting. “I’d also encourage everyone to take some time to visit the whipbird village where you can take advantage of the little free library and read even more stories,” she said. ‘Koalas eat gum leaves’ is an hysterical story about one koala that has had enough of gum leaves and is on the lookout for some tastier tucker. Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens is located at Palm Creek Road, Tanawha and is open from 7am–6pm, Monday– Sunday.
Tis the Season to be Planting! with Spencer and Karen Shaw
What could be a better gift this Christmas than the gift that keeps on giving – plants! Whether they be fruit trees, bushfoods, rainforest trees, koala food trees, groundcovers, vines, grevilleas, ferns … and too many other native plants to mention! For value, you can’t beat plants as a gift because they just keep growing and become more valuable with time, increasing in their beauty and productivity as time goes by. Better still not only do we humans benefit, but we also provide habitat and food for wildlife from butterflies to birds, katydids to koalas and skinks to sugar gliders. When we gift a plant to a friend or to our garden, we make a better world for all. As always, we have a great range of plants to choose from, but other great gift ideas include books, ceramic pots, indigo dyed t-shirts and much more. Come and check out Forest Heart for the best range of plants that you can buy yourself or grab (or call us about) a gift voucher. We’ll be open until Saturday December 22. Thank you to all the native plant lovers out there for a green 2018 and looking forward to an even greener 2019!

Backyard wildlife
with Spencer Shaw From Forest Heart Nursery
When it comes to planting in your garden to create habitat and food for native birds, many of us think no further than the great native plant trinity of grevilleas, banksias and bottlebrushes (Callistemon), which is great if you are a rambunctious, cheeky (some may say aggressive) honeyeater (a group of birds Australia is particularly well blessed with in their diversity). However, on the coast and hinterland of the Sunshine Coast we live in an incredibly bio-diverse area, with rainforests and other plant communities containing lots of fruiting plants, whose beauty and bounty make them valuable additions to your garden and a great source of food for a wide range of our fine, feathered friends. For the benefit of gardeners let’s steer clear of trees for now and see what we can list in the smaller shrubs and vines that grow on both the coast and hinterland and also provide fruit for the birds. Easy to grow and nice and low are the midyims (Austromyrtus spp), small spreading shrubs to one metre, with delicate weeping foliage and tasty little fruit that you can enjoy too. Snake vine (Hibbertia scandens) is a very adaptable climber or groundcover with bright yellow flowers and orange fruit. Orange thorn (Pittosporum multiflorum) is a prickly but glossy shrub to 1.5 metres, and is perfect for smaller birds to hide from noisy minors or the local moggies. Blue tongue (Melastoma malabathricum) is a small native relative of tibouchinas with the added benefit of a tasty fruit, which is so named as when you eat a few fruit your mouth is stained blue/purple. Breynia (Breynia oblongifolia), also known as coffee bush, is an open shrub with feathery foliage and small red fruit turning black when ripe, and is highly sought after by birds. Last but not least is wombat berry (Eustrephus latifolius), a delicate small shrub or vine, with beautiful white flowers and orange fruit. Time to wrap it up (as we could fill the paper with our great local fruit bearing plants) and wish you all a very berry Christmas! Health Check Stressed? Constantly tired? Unable to find that motivation?
McCloy Dental
With Sallyann Stewart form Natural Therapies Studio Adrenal fatigue may be a contributing factor to these problems. Adrenal fatigue is a term given to sub-optimally functioning adrenal glands. When under stress the adrenal glands release pulses of cortisol. Once upon a time this fight-or-flight response helped us to survive. Nowadays we live in an era that constantly puts us in fight-or-flight mode causing our cortisol to be constantly elevated. Over time, this need for heightened cortisol places strain on our adrenal glands and causes what is known as cortisol dysregulation. Signs of cortisol dysregulation include morning exhaustion and late night insomnia, craving salty and sugary foods, 3pm energy slump, foggy thinking, increased susceptibility to infection and an inability to handle stress. Book in for a consultation to discuss natural remedies that can help regulate cortisol production and support the adrenal glands.
Dental implants to replace missing teeth, or to stabilise that denture, are becoming the gold standard in dentistry. More patients are opting to have implants than ever before. The treatment is becoming simpler, and more reliable with new innovations. The cosmetic appearance is becoming more critical, and patient demand for a good result is higher. Does every case need implants placed? If your bridge, denture or dentition are functioning fine, then there is no reason to have implant treatment. Because of the loss of the tooth root, we often lose the underlying bone. This leads to a loss of gum contour. Being aware of how much is actually missing is important before the treatment begins. Rebuilding the lost bone and gum is possible, but should be done prior to implant placement. Placing the implant makes rebuilding the bone and soft tissue more difficult. As implants may last longer than the natural dentition, consideration of what will happen in years to come with loss of gum height from gingival recession is important to consider. There should always be a plan on how to treat the rest of the mouth. Sometimes that may include removing healthy teeth to be included in the final prosthesis to save replacing them at a later date.

Christmas messages from Glasshouse Lachlan Campbell Landsborough Adventist Community Church Wishing the Glasshouse community a wonderful Christmas season. Jesus is the reason for the season and the hope to all. May you find your joy and blessing in Him and with family. Christmas blessings from the Landsborough Adventist Community Church.
We’re not alone
Recently, we attended Gregson & Weight’s Christmas memorial service at their Caloundra Road chapel. The service united folk who had said their final goodbyes to family or friends throughout the year. The chapel was brimful with tissue boxes neatly laid on the seats and a tall bare Christmas tree occupying centre stage where the coffin would normally be placed. After the warm welcome and introduction, the popular and stirring ‘Amazing Grace’ was sung. Staff expressed meaningful words followed by a Christmas message from the former chaplain of the Maleny State High School. An RSL tribute was also presented. The highlight was the tree of remembrance where family members of all ages were invited to adorn the tree with bright baubles and a written message in memory of the special folk they wouldn’t be celebrating Christmas with this year. A golden star was placed atop the proud tree and with the flick of a switch flashing lights danced along the branches. On the overhead screens a photographic tribute brought our much loved ones to life in an overwhelming feeling of their actual presence there with us. Words of comfort gave us the “warm fuzzies” - a time of parting is shared by us all, but so too does being reunited finally. ‘Life on a train’ in its original form was shown while accompanying, meaningful phrases brought many of us to tears. These experiences help us grow together and understand death. We left feeling we had shared something common with all folk who attended the service. Refreshments, smiling and having conversations with people we‘d only just come to know - all sharing a feeling of deep loss at Christmas time. It was overwhelming. We’re not alone; none of us! Our gold star award goes to the Gregson family and to the wonderful staff of Gregson & Weight on the Sunshine Coast. Linda Maleny

Reverend Jeanette Jamieson Maleny Anglican Church This year we will have Christmas carols at St Luke’s, Kenilworth on Sunday, December 23 at 4.30pm, and on Christmas Eve at St George’s, Maleny at 6.30pm and St Mary’s, Montville at 5.30pm prior to the Christmas services. Following on from last year’s popular Christingle family service at St George’s, Maleny, we have decided to hold another one this year on Christmas Eve at 7pm. A Christingle family service will also be held at St Mary’s, Montville at 5pm. At these services there will be Christingles with a candle for every child, readings, carols, a nativity scene and costumes. We wish you all a blessed Christmas season.
Pastor Mal Moses Glasshouse Community Church The Bible foretold (Isaiah 7:14) that God would send a Son to this world, amazingly born of a virgin woman, and His name would mean ‘God with us’. In Luke, chapter 2, God’s Angel declared Christ’s birth and that He is the Saviour for, and brings peace to, humanity. Jesus Christ brings peace by restoring our relationship to God. Come along to church this Christmas and find out more about this good news of how you can know for sure of one day going to Heaven. I pray that you have a holy Christmas and blessed New Year. Father Kevin Smith Catholic Church Among all the stresses and joys of the Christmas season there is always the wonderful gift that we acknowledge every year. It’s the gift, as they say, “that keeps on giving”. That gift is God with us. Here and now, tomorrow, when all else seems not enough or when everything seems too much, God is with us, God is with me and in Jesus the presence of God’s love and mercy is given to us forever. A very happy Christmas to you all. God bless.

It’s the season to be jolly, Fa-la-la-la-la, la-lala-la. We have every reason to be jolly because of what was announced to shepherds at the time of the birth of Jesus. “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord’.” Luke 2:10-11. Yes, it’s good news! We can know God through Jesus Christ. He’s the reason for the season!
Jill Schefe Calvary Lutheran Church The members and friends of Calvary Lutheran Church Glasshouse greet you this CHRIST-mas as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. “Behold, I bring you glad tidings of great joy. To you is born this day a Saviour, which is Christ the King.” It is difficult sometimes to find peace and joy in a world filled with restlessness and despair. The one who brings hope to our world is Jesus. He was born to be the Saviour of the world. His love is everlasting so we can totally depend on the King who was born for us.
Reverend Catherine Solomon Maleny Uniting Church This will be my last Christmas message as minister for the Maleny, Montville and Palmwoods Uniting churches. It has been a pleasure to live and serve in these communities for the past four years, but now God is leading me and Andrew to Elanora Uniting on the Gold Coast. May this Christmas be one where you and your family experience the love and peace found in Jesus’ birth story. May your new year bring hope and joy found in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. Happy Christmas!

Reverend Geoff Weston Glasshouse Country Uniting Church For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord. Our congregation extends a very warm welcome to all to attend our Christmas Day service. Reverend Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church On behalf of the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church we would like to wish everyone a very merry and sacred Christmas. It would be lovely to see you at our Christmas Day service at 8am or any of our regular 9am services. Christmas is a very special time of year, let’s not waste it. How about we try to reconnect with God, with family and friends? Reverend Scott Kroeger Maleny Presbyterian Church What’s your favourite Christmas carol, and why? I’m not speaking of popular Christmas songs that deal with Santa, reindeer and snowmen, but those that sing the advent of the birth of the Saviour Jesus. Which do you like best? There are many to choose from. You might like a favourite tune, or arrangement, or perhaps the artist singing or playing it. But words are important as they express the profound advent of the Christ child in space, time and history. Examine the content and the truth spoken in these carols. For what it’s worth, my favourite is ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’. Pastor Aaron Jackson Church on the Rise Beerwah Joy to the world! Luke 2 verse 14 is a reminder that Christmas is not a man-made occasion to have a holiday. It is the celebration of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, the Saviour of our souls given to everyone especially those who believe on His name. God didn’t create us for a miserable existence but that we would experience joy, peace and goodwill towards others, and a relationship with Him to live out our purpose for which he created us. More than just gathering with family this Christmas, let us come to God to discover the true joy he offers all, through Christ Jesus.

Wishing you a a safe and ha y holiday season Notification of Proposed nbn™ Radio Network Base Station Facility Upgrade The National Broadband Network (nbn) is a high speed broadband network designed to reach 100 per cent of Australian premises and provide the communications infrastructure to help us stop falling behind in an increasingly online world. nbn is committed to delivering leading edge broadband services to all Australians by leveraging the three types of technology available – fixed line, fixed wireless and satellite, depending on location. Contributed by Ken Barker Bev Sockhill and Ken Barker teamed up for a very enjoyable game against Nick Cram on Thursday, with Bev playing well, but were defeated 12-10. Saturday morning saw a lively practise session with Wallace Roy and Wendy Whitby playing a couple of games of golf while Sarah Widin and Bev trounced Stuart Craig and Ken in a short game of association, winning 5-2. On Sunday Ken played Donna Manning and Kath Smith in a 14-point game. He pegged out to win 14–5. The club open championship was fought over on Tuesday with four participants - Donna, Nick, Vince Carbery and Ken. Donna ran out the eventual winner with a picket fence score of three wins from three games. Her closest game was against Nick where, on
the bell, scores were tied taking it to a “golden hoop”, where the next hoop scored wins the game. She resolved a tricky situation to do Donna Manning receiving that and won the game the open shie ld from club 17-16. Thanks to Val president Vince Carbery Carbery for refereeing. Congratulations to Donna on a sterling effort. Play days are on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the showground at 2.10pm for a 2.30pm start on Thursdays and Sundays. For details, contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs The optimist
ARIES March 21 - April 20 As this week draws close to your Christmas festivities, the energy of the Full Moon over the weekend could bring a home or family matter to a climax. It is a time to nurture them, and yourself, and make that a priority over outside business. As it is a Cancer Full Moon it emphasises security and tradition, mixed with home and family. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 There is a soul-mate connection for you over this Christmas period that leads to a great romantic connection. This is an exciting turn of events. The Full Moon in the sign of Cancer stresses emotional needs that require earnest communication and travel adventures with local family. Christmas is constructive and successful. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Christmas shoppers are blessed with an early start as your ruling planet, Mercury, connects with happy Jupiter. How lucky can you get? You could even have the stars giving a blessing over a job situation. Of course, Christmas will mean that you will have to adapt to all the change in plans. Take the lead now. CANCER June 24 - July 22 This should be a bonanza week full of family fun and joyful energy with your next of kin. This is because the Full Moon is in your sign. This leads into long time family and emotional connections. Perhaps some of you who are psychic will feel spirits of past Christmas energies in the room or in your dreams! may have guessed, he wrapped the manure instead of the pottery clay. On Christmas morning, Susie was so excited to see what Santa had brought her. When she finally got to unwrap her big present, her parents watched with anticipation to see how much she liked her clay. When Susie opened the package and then the bag inside containing stinky horse manure, the parents were aghast. But before they could apologise, Susie said: “Oh boy! I got a pony!”

LEO July 23 – August 22 Whatever you do over the Christmas period it will be worth your while to slow down the pace and perhaps have a backup plan. The Full Moon, in the sign of Cancer, is on Sunday early am. This gives you a clue about how to close out 2018. Be wise, focus on nurturing family and emotional connections rather than extravagance. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The Full Moon is in the sensitive sign of Cancer and hopefully it can bring you a beautifully warm whole weekend with early day interactions. You will possibly hear about those with their family plans, near and far, and your activities for the following week see you feeling grateful and happy. A sense of optimism buoys you providing mutual care. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The planet Neptune makes contact with your ruler, Venus, filling you with compassion, imagination and intuition, which can guide your spending. There is a possibility of good information forthcoming over the Christmas period. Under this Full Moon guidance, it provides you with a gentle reminder to adjust your priorities and balance in life. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 This Christmas fulfills your deepest holiday and family desires with beautiful heartfelt meaning, loving traditions and gifts galore! It is the season, of course, of bringing your plan together and seeking unity from all ages and generations. Christmas arrives with joyful tidings, early gift opening and upbeat family lunches and dinners.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With two planets, such as Venus and Neptune, coming together over the weekend, that encourages a retreat from stress and indulging in a quiet drink and nostalgia talks with a friend or family. As the Full Moon before Christmas moves through the sign of Cancer over the weekend, a sense of belonging to family is reassuring for you now. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 You may be inspired from a deep, soulful reservoir to do something bold and different. Under this Full Moon over the weekend in the family sign of Cancer you may have a surprise visitor or attend a reunion party. Get in the mood in full measure at Christmas with trust, inner guidance and faith. A dizzy whirl of activities could wear you out! AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Christmas this week is generally full of nostalgia, even thinking about your career, business moments and money dreams. All that thinking inspires you to make some wishes to be better in your life in 2019. Be careful at Christmas not to over extend yourself if making a purchase. Don’t worry if a friend is not on the same page with your joy. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The week before Christmas starts off well with the Full Moon in a compatible sign of Cancer. This helps you with emotional connections to the ones you love and treasure. Your thoughts remind you of how important the ties are between your best friends. There is happiness around Christmas day, with joyful accord for upbeat plans.

Little Susie had been born with a sunny disposition and was the most optimistic kid anybody had ever met. She loved people and animals and, no matter what happened, she always saw the bright side. She was also an artistic girl. So one Christmas, her parents bought her a big bag of clay for making pottery. They put it on the back porch next to a bag of horse manure for the garden. On Christmas Eve, dad wrapped the presents. It was a little dark on the porch and, as you
