Well, it looks like the students from the Glasshouse Christian College recently created some fun ‘school day’ memories of their own at their French Expo. Not sure what it is, but when you draw a moustache on someone’s face, on a poster, a photo, or in real life, it makes us smile. These days there is so much discussion about kids and technology and the amount of ‘screen time’ and the cyber pressures they face, so it is good to see a bunch of school kids having a bit of oldfashioned dressing up fun! I reckon we might all enjoy a bit more fun and escapism in our day to day lives, which is no doubt one of the reasons so many in our community headed along to Maleny for the Celebration of Books Festival that was held over the weekend. Brownie and I enjoyed the official opening on Friday night along with the Outspoken event featuring local author Steven Lang (recently also on our front cover with his two dogs). It was good to hear him assure the audience that his latest novel ‘Hinterland’ is a work of fiction and characters are not carbon copies of any locals! While I do believe Steven, it does make me think Regards, about how difficult that must be?

Local News Inaugural French Expo Contributed by Nadine Hammill and Penny White To celebrate all things French, Glasshouse Christian College held its inaugural French Expo on the last day of school in Term 2. At GCC French is taught from Prep to Year 12, so there were plenty of talented students to participate in the event. All the students dressed in the colours of the French flag to add to the festivity. The expo began with GCC’s Primary Marching Band playing the French National Anthem and was followed by each primary class or year level putting on a concert from what they had learned in their French classes. There were funny songs about potatoes, scary songs about big bad wolves and the old favourite, Frere Jacques, received a rock and roll makeover.

Students loved posing in this French scene – Darci Roy, Lylah Menkins, Hunter Watson, Taylah Handy, Jesse Menkens, Abbi Viney and Abbie Stevens

Erin Dickens waves the French flag as she watches the concert One group of students played a giant game of Guess Who in French and another performed an entertaining play by putting a musical twist on an old nursery rhyme. After the concert there were wonderful activities for the primary students hosted by the secondary students. Some learned the Can Can while others played pin the tail on the French poodle. Students experienced the art of mime by Marcel Marceau, made chandeliers and re-enacted the exhilaration of winning le Tour de France. There was also a French cinema, human Eiffel Tower art, wig and choker workshops and everyone loved eating chocolate croissants in the French Café. The day was a huge success and the students loved it so much that the French Expo will now be a biennial event on the GCC calendar.

When our team were out and about checking out which local coffee shops and cafes were happy for customers to bring in their reusable cups, one of the things we also noted was that quite a lot of the businesses were using a ‘biocup’ for their takeaway coffees. For me, like many others, I had felt better knowing that when we purchased our coffee in a ‘biocup’ that we were being more responsible towards our local environment. Biopak, the company that produces the BioCup explains on their website that their product is “produced from sustainably sourced paper and for every tree consumed another is planted! It is coated with a plant-based waterproof material which has a carbon footprint up to 70% lower than regular plastic used to coat most other paper cups. At BioPak we measure and completely offset all carbon emissions at each stage of the life cycle of our products from raw materials, production, distribution and disposal. BioCups can be recycled and composted.” So that’s great, but just to confirm the information about the product being able to be recycled and composted, I contacted Sunshine Coast Council’s waste education officer Sandie Johnson and posed that question – and it seems that in our local townships things are not quite that straight forward and this is what she told

me: “While the idea behind the ‘Biocup’ or other compostable takeaway coffee cups available is a great idea, they need to be composted on a commercial scale which is not happening on the Sunshine Coast. “Home composting cannot generally provide the particular conditions of heat, water and bio climate to successfully compost the product and as a result they are still a single use item that is going into landfill.” This got me thinking that we now need to encourage our council to offer this recycling service (as some other councils in Queensland already do). And then, for those of us who purchase these takeaway coffees when we are out and about and who want to ‘do the right thing’ when we dispose of the cups, our council needs to provide more public bins specifically for recycling. This way, these potentially eco-friendly cups can stop going directly to landfill. So, it looks like we now have a few more things we need to add pressure on council to do? At the Shack at Artisan Markets, Maleny, the staff encourage customers to reuse their bio cups by planting succulents in them

NBN towers explained By Greg Brown It appears that the twelve most recent NBN tower applications reported in last week’s GC&M News, strung across the Sunshine Coast region (six within the GC&M News readership footprint) may be for crucial ‘fibre hubs’ and ‘mini-hubs’, according to the planning documentation submitted to Council. The reports describe a fibre hub as “facilities connected to the fibre network and representing the critical anchor for fixed wireless service delivery", while mini-hub facilities are those “in the middle of a transmission chain that are not connected to fibre but nevertheless have downstream dependent facilities relying on transmission via the mini-hub to reach the fibre hub.” The report goes on to explain that the “transmission network requires absolute line of sight from facility to facility to enable the user’s data to reach the fibre hub and thereby connect to the broader nbn network”. NBN contend that without this interconnecting network, the system as a whole would not function. This is the a result of the Federal Government policy to excluded such areas from receiving the better, faster and more reliable fibre cable connection which the town centres and the Coast communities are receiving. Each of the six local tower proposals will be looked at in some detail over the coming weeks, with information extracted from the planning reports.

NBN Tower – 89 Sinclairs Lane, Balmoral Ridge (MCU17/2001) The proposal is for a 40m monopole tower with four parabolic dish antennas and three panel antennas attached to provide fixed wireless broadband to more than 400 properties in Balmoral Ridge and parts of North Maleny – what nbn are calling ‘Maleny East’. The area has been rated as having quality rating of ‘D’ or ‘E’ for existing ADSL broadband services, with median speeds ranging from 1.54Mbps to 8Mbps (Maleny township averages 23.53Mbps). The wireless coverage from the tower will extend about 3.5km northwest to North Maleny Road, 2.5km west to Obi Lane, 2km south past Maleny Vista, and almost 3km northeast along MalenyMontville Road. The facility will work in conjunction with the adjoining ‘Balmoral Ridge’ proposed tower, the approved facility at Wilkes Knob, the co-located facility at Montville, and an as-yet proposed facility at Maleny (most likely a tower at Palm Street) to provide a network of service east of Maleny township. The tower is to function as a fibre hub site, intended to support downstream services from as many as eight downstream facilities (both proposed and as-yet proposed) anticipated in the Hinterland across Maleny, Montville, Witta, Conondale, Balmoral Ridge, and Reesville. It will act as a transmission link to more than

Tower location as given in the development application. Inset An example of a monopole tower 1,700 other properties across the Hinterland. In total, more than 2,100 properties will be reliant on receiving an NBN service either directly or indirectly via the ‘Maleny East’ proposal. The facility is therefore considered by NBN as a significant piece of infrastructure for the delivery of future NBN service. A total of nineteen possible locations were investigated, with only one landholder (89 Sinclairs Lane) expressing any interest in hosting a tower. The location of the tower is set back 240m from Maleny-Montville road, but is only 45m from the nearest residential house. Other houses are located at a distance of 470m. The application documents deem that the proposal is compliant with all the relevant planning scheme codes and provides an important community benefit, and as such should be approved by Council. Next week we’ll look at the Burgess Avenue and Peachester tower proposals.

Air-conditioning Re-gas & Repairs SPECIALISING

by Greg brown Last week, a Maleny local noticed a sign on a fence of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve advising of a feral animal control program and wondered what it was all about. Conjecture (as well as speculation, suspicion, presumption and condemnation, laced with the usual denigration and ‘insultation’) ran riot on social media. So we asked Sunshine Coast Council – who were named on the sign as the contact – what was going on. It seems that the sign has been up on the fence since April as part of a specific wild dog and fox, and to a lesser extend feral cat, control program at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Sunshine Coast Council Team Leader Feral Animal Education & Control, Anthony Cathcart, said that the program is in response to native animal attacks. “Over the past few years, native wildlife at the reserve has been impacted by these predators, including several reports of attacks on red-necked pademelons,” explained Mr Cathcart. The program is using ‘Canid Pest Ejectors’, a mechanical device that have been stationed as a sentinel device and staked firmly into the ground. “The ejectors have been placed within a restricted area of the reserve and are monitored on a regular basis to ensure they remain effective at all times.

“The ejector technology is specifically designed to target these predators, making it safe for small native wildlife in the area.” According to the supplier – Animal Control Technologies Australia (ACTA) – the spring activated device has been extensively trialled across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland since 1955. Over many years they have been adapted and improved to achieve the delivery of a toxin directly into the mouth of a target animal. As specified on the council sign, the ejector is utilising sodium fluoroacetate ('1080'), which is highly toxic to canid pests (foxes and wild dogs) but has a much lower toxicity to native species when used at the standard low dosages. “The ejector technology is specifically designed

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

reserve to target these predators, making it safe for small native wildlife in the area,” said Mr Cathcart. “The ejectors can only be activated when a significant direct upward force is applied – wild dogs and foxes have the strength to activate them.” ACTA states that the technique reduces the risk of non-target damage, as birds and reptiles are rarely able to trigger the device and no bait material is able to be carried away to another location. Council has, in the past, conducted trapping programs within the reserve, however Mr Cathcart said that trapping was found to be heavily labour intensive and has a potential to impact on macropods, so this approach is no longer used in the reserve. “As is the case with any such program, council provided notification letters to all residents within 850 metres of the reserve boundary,” he said. “While dogs are not allowed in the reserve, with the exception of assistance dogs, residents and visitors are reminded to ensure they do not allow their dogs to roam into the reserve. “Council has received wonderful community support for our feral animal control programs that aim to protect our region’s agricultural and environmental assets. “Programs such as these are a positive step towards ensuring we continue to protect the fauna assets under our control and assist in slowing the decline of native species loss to predation.”

Glasshouse Mountains Medical Centre Responding to a local need to provide more doctors in the area, Glasshouse Mountains Medical Centre is pleased to advise that they now have five dedicated doctors working at the practice. After a busy period of renovations earlier this year, Glasshouse Mountains Medical Centre have finalised their expansion and are now inviting local patients to visit and see the difference for themselves. The new refurbishment has created a more comfortable and spacious feel for patients and allowed the addition of more consultation and treatment rooms. Four female doctors are now available for consultation and the practice includes adjoining pharmacy and pathology facilities. Practice Manager Kate Zagari is thrilled that the Centre has been able to cater to the rapid growth in the area and has had excellent feedback from the community about the expansion. “People now come in and say wow!” laughs Kate. “We have had a great response from everybody and now with more doctors on board we can offer same day appointments on most days.” The Centre offers an extensive range of healthcare options including men’s, women’s and children’s health, vaccinations, travel health and chronic disease management. McGrath Real Estate supports local clubs

The Mooloolah Soccer Club was recently the beneficiary of a $500 cheque from the McGrath Community Give Back Program. The real estate agency is currently running a program where homes sold by McGrath Caloundra give $500 to a local community group to be chosen by the property’s vendor. So earlier this year, when Gordon Young sold his villa in Aroona so that he could move onto the Mooloolah property owned by his son Danny and daughter-in-law Renae, he decided to donate the contribution to the Mooloolah Soccer Club. Gordon’s grandkids play soccer at this club and he loves heading out to watch their games.

Nominations open for Business Awards

Improved staff motivation and morale, better customer service and professional acknowledgment of your achievements – these are just some of the benefits local businesses have experienced from entering the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. Nominations are now open for the 2017 awards, managed by the Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce. Sunshine Coast Business Awards chair Jennifer Swaine encouraged business owners to nominate their own businesses and everyone else to nominate a business in their area to apply for the 2017 awards. “The 2017 awards is an exciting mix of awards which represents the way business is conducted in our region,” Ms Swaine said. “It includes business sector awards, major awards for key aspects of business performance, an overall business of the year award and the prestigious Hall of Fame.” Sunshine Coast Council is a platinum partner of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. Economic Development and Innovation Portfolio Councillor Steve Robinson said the awards provided a great opportunity for local businesses. For more information about the awards, or to nominate a Sunshine Coast business, visit sunshinecoastbusinessawards.com.au.

Knitting Circle rugs bring comfort Those in need will find warm comfort this winter thanks to the Friends of Beerwah Library Knitting Circle’s generous donation of 10 colourful knitted rugs to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on June 28. Friends of Beerwah Library Knitting Circle member Barbara Stacey said the group was delighted to respond to community requests and decided to run weekly knitting circles throughout May and donate the proceeds to a local charity. “The Knitting Circle participants were happy to see the rugs go to locals who are doing it tough this winter,” she said. “The library proved to be the ideal location for us with its comfortable seating, welcoming staff and a dynamic space for meeting. “Not only do our members enjoy meeting new people, some are sharing their love of wool and crafting by teaching new skills. “In addition to the Wednesday sessions, our members spent lots of time at home knitting and sewing the squares. “Each of the donated rugs had a special message to say the rug was made for you by the Beerwah Library Knitting Group from material donated by the library members. We hope it brings you comfort and a smile. “The group intends to work on other knitting projects in the future. “Some members are knitting beanies at present and I’m interested in starting a Twiddle Muff, a knitted muff with tactile items sewn inside and

Amanda and Patricia (Beerwah Library supervisors), Helen, Anne (Friends of the Library) and Sharon (Knitting Circle participant) Debra Koost (GHMNC Volunteer accepting donations), Shirley (Knitting Circle participant), Barbara (Friends of the Library), Margaret and Gaye (Knitting Circle participants) different textures knitted into the outside, to aid autistic and dementia sufferers.” Debra Koost, from Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, said the 10 beautiful rugs would be used for care packages which will be distributed to those in need in the area. “The Neighbourhood Centre offers emergency relief for people in need as well as a space for community connections,” she said. “The knitted rugs with a personalised message are a welcome addition to packages that will be distributed this winter.” The Friends of Beerwah Library Knitting Circle group welcomes new members and meets every Wednesday from 1.30pm-3pm. Wool donations are welcome.

Now in its 12th year, the annual Welcome to Maleny and District Dinner will be held on September 20 at the Maleny Showground Pavilion. The event is hosted by the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club, and will feature a delicious buffet meal catered for by the Orangery at Maleny, and will include three guest speakers from local community groups, who will speak about the things they do. Vale John Gibson

By Sonia Clark John Sewell Gibson was a Maleny-based draftsman and award winning building designer who passed away earlier this year. The well respected professional, along with his wife Liz, resided in Maleny for 37 years where the couple raised their four children. John will be remembered as a community-minded individual who generously gave his professional expertise and time to assist numerous community projects and local organisations. John originally met Liz at a dancing studio in Nundah, Brisbane and the couple went on to be married for 56 years. He began his career as an apprentice draftsman with a large electrical provider before joining the Department of Navy as a draftsman in Canberra. After a number of years the couple realised the importance of being nearer to family in Queensland and the decision was made to move to Maleny in 1980. Purchasing land in the area, John found that Maleny didn’t initially provide enough work for his profession so he started working at Super Value in the hardware section (which is now the IGA). With four children attending the local schools, John became heavily involved with the local scout troop and the Maleny Rangers Football Club. He was a scout leader for many years and, in recognition of his long standing commitment to the Maleny Rangers, he was awarded Life Membership status. Liz also recalls that he received an Australia Day Award for ‘Services to sport’ as nominated by the soccer club. John was always happy to provide his professional skills to assist community projects including using his drafting abilities to assist in planning the Maleny School Tuckshop and Maleny Pool. He will be remembered as a strong minded but fair man who was committed to his local community. John is survived by his wife Liz, three children, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

New floor for Landsborough Hall

For the past 93 years the Landsborough Hall has hosted many important community and family events including weddings, funerals, Debutante Balls, dances, fundraising events, markets, martial arts and dancing classes. Not surprisingly the use has taken its toll on the timber floors, and over the years the floor has been sanded and repaired to the point where the tongue and groove flooring has now become so thin it is splintering and cracking. Work began on Monday to replace the floor, and the hall will be closed until Friday August 4. The work will be completed in time for the hall to take part in Loving Landsborough Day as part of the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast. A grant of $48,838 from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council has enabled the replacement of the hall flooring, which will see the floor restored to its former glory. The Hall Committee would like to thank Cr Rick Baberowski and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for their support in maintaining this historic building. This support ensures the hall’s ongoing connection with the greater Landsborough community. Make sure you mark the ‘Loving Landsborough Day’ in your diary – Saturday, August 5 and head along to the hall to admire their new floor and check out the entries in the Beanie/ Tea Cozy Competition and the 1960s High Tea with a Twist. For more information on the celebration, check out the Landsborough Hall Markets Facebook page.

Apex funds defibrillator for Community Precinct

The lives of future heart attack victims within the Maleny Community Precinct and its surrounds may well be saved thanks to Apex Maleny’s insightful decision to fund the purchase of a defibrillator now installed at the Maleny Golf Club. Golf Club President Max Whitten said the defibrillator, which cost $2,500, could be readily accessed to assist anyone in need on the golf course, the wider precinct or on the surrounding walking trails. “This is a state-of-the art piece of equipment which is portable, lightweight and easy to use if the need arises,” Dr Whitten said. “We want to thank the Maleny Apex Club on behalf of the community for providing the funds to purchase this equipment, which we know can greatly improve a heart attack victim’s chances of

The defibrillator gets the thumbs up from Maleny Golf Club President Max Whitten and Penny Edwards survival if deployed and used in time.” Incoming Apex Maleny President Barry Meager said members had been delighted to be in a position to support the Golf Club’s communityfocused initiative. “Apex is always happy to get behind projects and initiatives of benefit to the broader community and the purchase of a defibrillator for the golf club and community precinct certainly ticked all the right boxes,” Mr Meager said.

Three women artists ‘Speak Out’ Arts Connect is again hosting their ‘Artists Speak Out’ event at Maple 3, Maleny on July 28 from 6pm to 7.30pm. The evening, an informal gathering for anyone interested in supporting and enjoying the arts, will feature three talented artists, Jacky Lowry, Stephanie Brown and Tina Galloway. Jacky Lowry lives in Conondale and printing is her passion. An initial interest in science and biology can be seen in her artwork, along with the influence of an adventurous childhood along the Canning River, Western Australia.

Stephanie Brown started out on her art journey with screen printing and marbling and then moved on to silk painting and recycling clothing and fabrics as works of art. Tina Galloway uses multi media, drawing and acrylic painting with collages of her original prints, techniques which reflect her creative background in advertising layout, theatre costuming and fashion design. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for non members. A welcome drink and nibbles are provided and a relaxed but interesting evening is promised.

Strong interest in Muscle Cars Each year the Muscle on the Mountain Maleny Show and Shine event held at the Maleny Showground receives plenty of interest and support and this year’s event was no exception. Organisers estimate that approximately 850 cars were on display on the day and that around 4,500 patrons packed out the five hour event on Sunday July 2. But the big winner for the day was Prostate Cancer Foundation Queensland with this year’s event raising over $7,000. One of the highlights of the day was having special guest Motoring Show presenter Fletch on the day who was filming a documentary on the event which the organisers are hoping will screen on 7Mate in the future as well possibly being included in four other worldwide television sites.

‘Braking the Cycle’ program on Sunny Coast The Sunshine Coast Police-Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) will for the first time be able to provide free driver training to disadvantaged local youths, thanks to $5m funding from the State Government’s Motor Accident Insurance Commission. Labor’s candidate for Glass House, Brent Hampstead, said the funding meant Sunshine Coast PCYC would get a new Hyundai and $466,000 over the next three years to start the Coast’s first ‘Braking the Cycle’ program. Mr Hampstead said the PCYC would match volunteer instructors with disadvantaged young learner drivers who otherwise may not be able to access a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their mandatory 100 pre-testing logbook hours. “I’m very excited that this initiative will give dozens of young people on the Sunshine Coast a chance for motoring independence,” Mr Hampstead said. “In the Glass House region, where our towns are spread out and public transport options are limited, a licence can be a massive help to securing a job. “The 100-hour pre-testing requirement can place a lot of stress on some young people, who may not have access to a car. “By investing in young motorists, before they obtain their licence, this program also helps to ensure safer drivers and safer roads for the future.” “This game-changing program has already had great success in Ipswich and Logan.” The Motor Accident Insurance Commission joins a number of government, industry and community supporters of the PCYC’s Braking the Cycle program, including the significant contribution from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.

in profile Bernie Gilbert So what does a builder with a lifetime of experience working do when they retire? Well, in the case of Maleny’s Bernie Gilbert they find a volunteer role that allows them to use their building skills and knowledge and continue making a valuable contribution to the local community, assisting in restoring and retaining the historical buildings from the local area. Bernie Gilbert, now aged 81, moved to Maleny back in 1986 aged 50. He had been living in Buderim and had been doing repair work in Maleny and decided he liked that area and made Maleny his permanent home after a working in the building industry for more than 30 years. While Bernie’s early life was spend on his family’s farm between Cootamundra and Junee in western NSW, Bernie’s dad soon realised that Bernie was more interested in carpentry and making things out of timber than he was in farm animals, so when he finished high school Bernie got a five-year apprenticeship with a builder in Sydney were he learnt carpentry, cabinet making and joinery and stayed with the same company for about five years before deciding to go off and see the world (well Australia at least). Western Australia was hosting the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games and advertised for carpenters, so Bernie bought a little caravan and towed it across the Nullarbor to Perth, 1,000 miles of corrugated bull dust.

This story has been compiled from interviews that Maleny Historian Desley Malone completed with Bernie during 2017.

After repairing the van, he was able to live in it in the Commonwealth Village. He stayed on in Perth for 10 months and then decided it was time to sell the car and van and he took a ship back to Sydney. His travels didn’t stop there. Over the next decade or so he would work on the Gold Coast, in Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns and then, when the big construction company TJ Watkins wanted carpenters in Weipa, Bernie went up there in 1967 for 12 months aComalco. While he was there he saved $10,000 and when he returned to Cairns he bought his first house for $10,500. Bernie continued to work for several builders in Cairns until he got fed up with the heat and the distance. He sold up and left in 1979. When Bernie first moved to Maleny he was working as a registered builder, and in 2001 he retired and realised that he needed to continue working as a builder as he wanted to teach others how to do carpentry work. Bernie said, “I realised that young builders worked differently to how I had been taught using different construction material and I wanted to teach them how to restore old houses, and understand what it was like to work with timber.” Bernie said he first began volunteering for the Lions Club putting up a bus shelter and garden sheds, as well as selling raffle tickets for several years. “Then I heard that the Historical Society needed a volunteer carpenter to work to restore Lawley House in 2007. The house was shifted from North Maleny, where CloudWalk is today, to the Historical Village.” Initially Bernie took on the role of Project Manager for this restoration of Lawley House and he got Ed Lawley to help with jobs like the walls and roof. “I worked on this project for approximately five hours every second day for three years,” he said. These days Bernie’s work is generally focused on

the Glenferna House Restoration Project which started in early February 2016. It took seven weeks to dismantle the front verandah and prepare the building for removal from 1010 Maleny/Landsborough Road. Preparation was then undertaken at the village for Glenfirma to be relocated next to Lawley House, which was completed on the evening of May 26, 2016. Bernie reckons that this was when the real work began and he realised that he needed to work every day, initially to secure the house, which took weeks. Since then work has progressed well. The roof needed to be replaced and Ed Lawley organised a team of volunteer tradesmen to get this job done. The enclosed verandahs had to be replaced, boards had to be sourced, nails removed, painted and stacked. Windows have had to be taken out and restored and matching doors have had to be located. The new roof on the front verandah needed new rafters, and iron work which also had to be painted. Insulation for the archives has been sourced and stored and new timber flooring has been put in the archives and office. Bernie is currently volunteering on average about 20 hours a week and he believes that restoration on Glenferna will continue for at least another nine months to complete both the work outside and inside the house. Bernie is a valued member of the Historical Society and earlier this year they nominated him for his volunteer efforts as part of the Maleny and District Sports and Rec Club Awards.

Recollections of the Past The Landsborough State School Centenary Book titled ‘Recollections of the Past’, published in 1979, recorded the memories of locals who attended the school in its early days. Mary Ferris (nee Burgess) wrote an article about her schooldays at Mellum Creek School (later Landsborough) around 1912 or 1913. For some time Mary and her sister, Ellie, caught the train to Landsborough to go to school, as the school at Glass House Mountains had been closed because there were not enough children attending. (This was a common occurrence at rural schools in the late 1800s and early 1900s.) After they got off the train at Landsborough railway station, the children used to “run through the bush to the school”, Mary wrote. The old playshed that she remembered from her schooldays still stood in the school grounds in 1979 and she remembered that Mr Dooley was the Head Teacher.

Mary’s father, Will Burgess, was the son of Isaac Hudson Burgess, one of the original selectors in the Mellum Creek and Maleny areas. Will and his wife, Clementina, and their four children lived at Bankfoot House, not far from the township of Glass House Mountains. In her article, Mary also wrote about the visit of the Prince of Wales to Landsborough in 1920. “The residents had prepared a very elaborate welcome,” she wrote. “The people were dressed in their finery, the station was decorated with flags and palms, and the important guests were lined up waiting for the train to arrive from the north. The Prince was late arriving and hurriedly left the train, shook hands with the VIPs, and departed.” After waiting in the hot sun at the Landsborough railway station for much of the day, Mary remembered going across from the railway to Tytherleigh’s Café for tea.

Countdown to Street Party

Celebrate Glasshouse Country is putting on the Street Party at Beerwah this October 20, from 4pm to 9pm, and it is time for local businesses and community groups to get involved. Festival co-ordinator Judy Tomlinson reckons it is shaping up to be better than ever, with more room, new rides, stalls and attractions and they are keen to encourage locals who would like to get involved, whether that be as a sponsor or a stall holder. Thanks to extra space at Beerwah Village, there are more stall sites available and if you would be interested in having a stall at the event you can contact them on email info@celebrategc.com.au,

or drop in to their office at shop 7B at 7 Turner Street, just a few doors up from the Beerwah Post Office. “We also invite local schools, P&Cs, churches, community groups, clubs and sporting clubs to host a stall, which we are offering these groups free of charge,” Judy said. “With so many visitors and new residents in the region, this is a great way to attract new members and do some fundraising.” To find out more about Celebrate Glasshouse Country, you should check out their website: www.celebrateglasshousecountry.com.au.

You Said It Getting serious with rail

Mr Brumley (GC&M News, July 5) is correct in assuming that Queensland Rail and their political masters have one track minds, and that track does not include any significant rail upgrades on the Sunshine Coast, apart from the purchase of new rolling stock and places to store them. The Liberal Federal and State politicians for our local electorates make expansive statements about funding rail projects in this very publication, but in short, where is the money? The 2017-18 Federal Budget provides $1.5 billion for road funding, including $552m for ongoing bandaids to Australia's most lethal highway, the Bruce. Only $70.3m has been provided for rail and that includes $31.6m for Gold Coast light rail. The Queensland State Government has budgeted $1.95 billion for Cross River Rail, and goodness knows it is needed. They are doing it on their own because the Liberal Government will not help, but that does not help the Sunshine Coasters. There is no strategic plan for rail in this State, or indeed in Australia. Queensland's rail systems have been subject to penny pinching since 1864, and now the narrow gauge is the norm. There is no plan to move to standard gauge railway and finally connect to the rest of Australia. The advantages of duplicating a standard gauge railway from Cairns to Brisbane and to connect the whole Eastern Australia seaboard by standard gauge rail will provide speed, efficiency, safer roads, and a better environment. The flow on effects to the rest of Australia would be immeasurable. Surely this would be a project worthy of the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility, a project that would end the isolation of the North, a project on the scale of the Snowy River Project, rather than, for example, fund a loss-making future coal mine? Australia needs to get rail serious. Ken Dyer Landsborough

Lack of attention

As a resident of Beerburrum for 10 years, I am dismayed by the lack of attention our small town of approximately 770 residents receives from both the Sunshine Coast Council and Queensland Rail. Meanwhile all the other towns in this region – Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House township – receive fabulous new community facilities such as the fully security-fenced Pioneer Park and Skippy Park in Landsborough, the new street scaping, welcome signage, off leash dog park, new park in Turner Street in Beerwah, to name a few, and in Glass House the new information centre, and security-fenced playground and car park. Conversely, here in Beerburrum, and especially in

CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

Church Street and on Beerburrum Road, the signs of neglect are everywhere. The old Trackstar site is left abandoned, run down and overgrown with ugly broken down ‘fencing’, with an unrepaired traffic accident site, a truly revolting view for the the people living in the houses opposite. Along Beerburrum Road, the entrance to the Beerburrum Mountain lookout is not visible from the road due to the overgrown weeds. Parrot Park is a sad sight as well, there is no security fencing and inadequate car parking which is very uninviting both to our growing population (with the Acacia Ridge development steaming ahead) and to the visitor alike. If valuable infrastructure dollars can be spent on Landsborough, Beerwah, and Glass House, isn’t it now Beerburrum’s turn for a facelift and some much needed improvement to our community facilities? Heather Cardaci Beerburrum

Property values tower debate

I would like to return to the topic of issues, it appears that some in our community are still in denial about dollar values once a tower goes in nearby. It’s clear from around the world that this is the case. I have 16 papers and surveys from the UK, NZ, Canada, Australia and the USA - property values decline if a tower is on your land, next door or visible nearby. The facts are that property values can fall by around 20% and up to 35% (in some cases) if a tower is nearby. A US Real Estate Survey (July 2014) found 94% of respondents reported that nearby towers would impact interest in a property and the price they would pay. And 79% said under no circumstances would they ever purchase or rent a property within a few blocks of a phone tower or antenna. In Conondale you have to drive to a spot then run around holding a phone in the air to get a signal in large areas of this district. And NBN towers are not phone towers. It’s likely that Telstra or other providers will apply for ‘co-location’, but they are not phone towers. Internet speeds with NBN – still terrible and in cases way behind South East Asia. Recent national newspapers (May 2017) have carried sentences like this: "Eight years after the country began an unprecedented broadband modernisation effort that will cost at least $49 billion, its average internet speed lags that of the USA, most of Western Europe, Japan and South Korea. In the most recent ranking Australia came in at an embarrassing No. 51, trailing developing economies like Thailand and Kenya." NBN is not our 'saviour', it has bumbled along as we have seen in Maleny district after three years of issues. Richard Giles Conondale

Make your opinion heard

Over past months I have noticed a general shift in the content of ‘Letters to the Editor’, with a greater emphasis now on matters relating to government activities generally. GC&M News, July 12 edition, is a prime example, where eight of the 11 letters published relate to some form of concern over governmental decisions/ actions. In Mr Brumley’s letter he states, “If the locals do not stand up and be counted you will get what they (the governments) want, not what suits your area” – which is true! Witness the townhouse development at 95 Peachester Road, Beerwah (covering an area of 20,240m2) – 48 single level units of which only seven blocks have areas of greater than 300m2. The remainder are around 240m2. This type of development does not suit Beerwah and I’m sure most Beerwah residents do not support it. But it’s too late now – it’s approved, done and dusted! We need more people to put their views in the public arena. So get with it, express your concerns and keep pressure on those accountable! The pollies and bureaucrats are uncomfortable if they are constantly reminded by their constituents of actions they have taken/instigated which run contrary to public opinion, the law or common sense (ref Mr Derek Browning’s recent letter, which queries council’s economic rationale for a solar farm). Why robo-advice is no substitute for the human touch in mortgage broking Websites offering the ability to obtain a home loan online are becoming more popular – not only in Australia but also globally. These platforms offer what is known as ‘robo-advice’ – guidance and help provided online, instead of by a real person. Such advances in technology seem convenient for time-poor individuals, but are they really better than a mortgage broker? We look at why robo-advice is taking off, and the risks involved. As banks seek to cut costs, they are turning to cheaper digital solutions. Customers who want a quick solution see websites offering robo-advice as hasslefree and efficient. Robo-advice has taken off in the UK, 18

where a number of digital platforms offer consumers the ability to apply for home loans online. Here in Australia, the debate about robo-advice is also taking place, with some banks viewing it as a convenient alternative to mortgage brokers. Technology may be advanced but it’s still not intelligent enough to fully allow for the complexity of different home loan offerings. Many people fall into the trap of thinking that the best home loan is the cheapest, but it’s not just a case of finding the most cost-effective solution. A mortgage broker talks with you to understand your needs other than just your financial situation. They consider your future goals, your family, your work

situation and lifestyle. A mortgage broker goes beyond what’s written on paper and can explain to you in plain English what all that jargon really means. By opting for a quick solution, you may not think through all the things you should consider before making a decision. And the repercussions of getting stuck with a loan that doesn’t give you the flexibility you need could get you into some serious financial strife. A real person will always be a better option. Despite the perceived convenience of robo-advice, the websites offering it don’t have the ability to recognise your unique situation and tailor a solution to meet your needs. You can only get this from a real person.

By choosing to work with a mortgage broker who understands you on a human level, you get to experience the beauty of connecting with someone. You can crack a joke, share a cup of coffee, talk about your kids, or bond over your love of State of Origin. Those are things you can’t do with a computer!

School News Flutter in – you’re invited

Contributed by Sally Joyce It’s tree planting week again and during the next two weeks, every student at Peachester State School will be planting a native butterfly host plant. To date, the school has planted more than 185 Richmond Birdwing Vines and over 600 native trees along a bush trail which now spans 385 metres. This year the school is focused on expanding the number of butterfly host plants on the trail. To celebrate our butterfly plantings, our school would love to invite the community to visit our Indigenous Forest Walk and hear Butterfly Expert Helen Schwenke share her knowledge and passion for butterflies. Helen is the co-author of ‘Create More Butterflies: A guide to 48 butterflies and their host-plants for South-East Queensland and Northern NSW’ and she co-ordinates the Woodfordia Butterfly Project at Woodford Folk Festival. Helen will be presenting to students, parents and community members a beautiful slide talk followed by an outdoor session in our forest classroom. Students can collect leaf nibbles and other life-cycle findings to talk about with Helen. Mooloolah River Landcare and River Watch will be assisting through the day with butterfly craft activities and a fun ‘Weedy-set-go’ activity to hone children’s weed identification skills. Peachester State School would love to show you why they wear butterflies on their uniform sleeves with pride and invite grandparents and community members to walk our beautiful Indigenous Forest Walk. This is always a special event and we would love members of the community to join us at Peachester State School on Friday July 28. The event starts at 1.30pm so please arrive by 1.15pm. Please call the school on 5439 5111 for further information. This male Richmond Birdwing Butterfly was spotted in a Peachester Garden just last week during the unseasonal warm weather

River students under the sea

Contributed by Ann Donoghuoe Recently Maleny was knitted out for the popular annual Knitfest, with the theme this year being 'Under the Sea’. The River School’s contribution to the festival consisted of Alberto, our large whale sculpture (made by the Year 6 students), surrounded by yarn jellyfish, fish, turtles and rare sea creatures. Students across all classes made these creatures in art during Term Two under the guidance of their art teacher, Alieta Belle. Alberto the baby whale calf was made to scale, and he and his knitted sea creature friends created a large splash of interest among all the visitors and locals to Maleny.

Adopt a cop visit

Prep students at Beerwah State School were recently fortunate enough to get a visit from Adopt-a-Cop, Constable Susan Lowndes. Constable Lowndes came in to check out the students very own Police Station, and to share information about the role of police officers in our community. She was impressed with all the technology that was included in the children's work and she fielded many questions about the items she was wearing, and what they were used for. The students were also all very curious about the role of the police dogs. The students had a wonderful morning, and were very grateful for Constable Lowndes’ visit, for coming to chat about the amazing work that our police officers do to keep our community safe.

New reading program

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Mooloolah State School’s second semester has kicked off and is in full swing as students embark on an exciting new reading program. The ‘I Can Read’ program targets every child, every day. Before the bell goes every child from Year 1 will have read a book of their choice from the library to one of the many volunteers, including teachers and school staff, parents, student leaders and community volunteers. Everyone in the community is welcome to come along and lend a hand. The students are so excited with the new program and are eager to get to school early to read a book to someone. This will encourage a love of books and reading to young learners and promote language skills. There was a festive atmosphere at the launch on Monday, with prizes and giveaways donated by the Beerwah branch of the Sunshine Coast Library. The message that reading is fun is getting out there and is an important step in children’s learning. If you would like to volunteer from 8.20am to 8.50am any day, please call Kerry Flello on 5413 6333.

Introducing Wendy Dwyer Glass House Early Education Centre staff member Wendy Dwyer is coming up to her seventh year of working at the Centre. With a Certificate III in Child Care, Wendy is a long standing assistant educator who helps out in all the rooms catering for children from nursery age through to the older ‘schoolies’ in before and after school care – however she is best known as the friendly face of the Centre's bus service. After living in the Northern Territory and Western Australia for many years, Wendy decided to move to the Sunshine Coast in 2007. Moving to the local area and having to rebuild networks, she has found that working at the Centre was a great way to get involved with the local community and to get to know and meet others, and she has appreciated the inclusive and welcoming environment that, according to Wendy, has allowed her to come out of her shell. The bus service at the Centre has developed over the last few years from an occasional use to a bustling daily pickup and drop off service that has provided vital assistance to busy families. “When I started, the bus service here was just a small part of what the Centre offered and it was not used a great deal,” explains Wendy. “We soon realised that families needed help so we offered the pickup and drop off service. People now often have to get to work early or some families don’t have access to a second car so our service really helps – it has also helped build up the Centre.” The Centre bus operates a daily school run and home run service. For working parents, children can be dropped off at the Centre from 6.30am and Wendy will organise the school run drop off to Glass House, Beerburrum and Beerwah as well as to Glasshouse Christian College.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Following the school run Wendy then does the ‘home pickup’ run for younger children attending the Centre. The same service runs in the afternoons with Wendy driving to the local schools to pick up the children requiring after school care and dropping off the younger children home. The best thing is that there is no additional charge for this service as it is covered by the normal centre fees. Generally, the service operates approximately to a 10 kilometre radius though if there is a family outside of that area that requires assistance Wendy and the team will do whatever they can to try and accommodate that family's need. “I must say that I really enjoy driving the bus every day. I like to give my 100% everyday and it’s nice to pick up the children who always seem pleased to see me. We are all mothers here and I think that makes a difference about how we relate to the children – we are genuinely interested in them and really care about their responsibility. I love that the children will often run up and give me a hug and a big smile,” says Wendy. People often see the Centre bus around the local schools and driving around, and Wendy feels that people really appreciate the service to the local community it offers.

Centre news Sustainability is actively encouraged by Centre Coordinator Ange and the team, and the children and their families are excited to explore different ways to reuse and recycle items. Many of the creative play materials used at the Centre are sourced from either nature or household items donated by families such as cardboard boxes, old tins and milk bottles caps. At the front entrance, a specially created ‘recycling station’ has boxes for a range of materials that can be reused. The items that may have previously been put in the waste stream are now repurposed and provide valuable creative materials and artwork inspiration as well as encouraging the children to consider other options instead of ‘just throwing stuff away’. General recycling stations are also positioned throughout the Centre and children are regularly familiarised with the concepts and benefits of recycling.

Community Call Out! Donations greatly appreciated of gumnuts and bottlebrush flowers to use for art projects and metal forks and spoons to make wind chimes.

The Winter Fitness Survival Guide By Ang Dellaway from Wild Health and Fitness Chilly mornings and nights, finding it harder to get up, tight sore muscles and tempting to stay in rather than exercise? Does this sound like you too? Here are some Winter Fitness Tips to help stay motivated and maintain your health and fitness throughout winter. Choose a routine – at a realistic time of day that will suit you – and stick to it! Make it less of an ‘option’ and just something you get up and do daily or weekly so you don’t try to talk yourself out of it. Put your favourite workout clothes out ready night before – include layers. Always drink plenty of water, even during colder weather. Have a longer warm-up and stretch before you begin to avoid injury and overstretching tight muscles from the cold too quickly. Choose an indoor sport or exercise class, or something out in the warm sun of a morning. Get Social – exercise with a friend, partner or group to keep each other motivated and on track. Try something new! Challenge yourself or revisit something you love! Exercise to music that motivates you and have fun while working out! Expect setbacks – unexpected events happen, allow yourself the time you need, don’t feel bad about it, then just get back on track again. So what are you waiting for? Bring on the ‘Happy Hormones’ and say goodbye to the ‘Winter Blues’!

When communicating with landlords we are mindful that not everyone is up-to-date on real estate lingo. If we are discussing tenancy agreement types being fixed-term or periodic / continuing the difference is simply... a Ross Rutledge fixed-term is for a set period with a start and end date; and a periodic / continuing 5499 9525 or agreement has a start date but 0447 787 020 no end date. A fixed term tenancy agreement that expires and is not renewed is considered a periodic / continuing agreement. The tenant is still bound by the terms and conditions of the fixed-term agreement even when it expires.

In theGarden Look out for fireweed

At this time of the year landowners need to be on the lookout for fireweed, a serious declared pest plant which is very poisonous to grazing animals and is currently actively growing throughout South East Queensland. An introduced weed from Madagascar, fireweed is a branched herb that grows up to about 60cm high, with serrated leaves up to 6cm long and small yellow daisy-like flowers approximately the size of a $2 coin. The best time to prevent major fireweed problems is before it establishes and spreads. If you think you’ve found fireweed, it’s important to contact the Sunshine Coast Council on 5475 7272 so that they can check it out before it has a chance to spread. A colour factsheet on the toxic weed is available through the Council Customer Service Centre or on the Biosecurity Queensland website (www.daf.qld.gov.au – search for fireweed). Another yellow flowering weed often confused with fireweed is flatweed. This also has a yellow daisy-like flower, but this weed has leaves which grow flat against the ground. Flatweed is a nuisance weed in lawns, gardens and grassy areas.

A Touch of Spring

With Spencer and Karen Shaw Although the official start to Spring is still six weeks away, plants and animals are deciding Spring has well and truly sprung. Indicators of this early change are the regular light rains, warm days, warmer than average nights, the Spring wild-flower blossoms and the birds nesting and singing the songs of Spring. Now is a great time to be doing the big jobs on your land such as mulching, weed removal, large scale pruning and of course planting. The gentle weather of the moment is a great time to establish plants in your garden that will bring beauty, habitat, fruit and of course shade in the hot summer that will inevitably follow this mild winter. After a fantastic weekend at the Queensland Garden Expo, the benches at the Forest Heart Eco-Nursery are jam packed with a great range of local natives, cultivar natives and fruit trees.

Eco-Nursery

Look after your hose, fellas

Ok... let’s talk about a serious problem affecting lots of us gardeners... a kinky hose. The common old garden hose is definitely something that we take for granted. We leave it in the blazing sun all day or in the freezing cold. We drive over it without giving a second thought. We let it leak all over the place. Despite this ill treatment we still expect our hose to last forever and to deliver water whenever we turn on the tap. Garden hoses these days can be expensive investments, so it’s crazy that we don’t treat them with the same respect as we would other costly garden tools. The most common symptom of a sick hose is kinking. Years ago I learn the value of not encouraging kinks in your hose. I used to work doing weed spraying where we would have up to 400m of hose out. Getting a kink and having to walk 400m back to unkink it then 400m to start work again gets annoying after a while – especially when it happens a number of times. Now I still play around with long hoses – I’ve got two at home, both are 90m each – but I’m much more courteous to them than I used to be. Firstly, you get what you pay for – as the old adage goes. Modern hoses have inbuilt kink-free technology built into them... they even come with a kink resistant rating. I’m not convinced that a rating 7 is markedly better than a rating 8 – but I’m no kinkologist. My suggestion is to buy the best you can afford. My other tip is to buy the longest you can afford. Invariably you’ll buy a 15m hose only to find that the potted Lots-a-Lemons is 19m away. Watch your diameter. The standard hose and fitting diameter is 12mm. This is suitable for most residential needs. Rural and commercial sized hoses and fittings are 18mm, which allows a large water flow. You can easily buy adapters if you need to change the tap fitting size from one to the other. To keep your hose in tip top shape, the best advice is to keep it out of the sun and to roll or coil it up. A hose reel is great for shorter hoses. You’ll almost never have a kink in your hose if you use a hose reel. There’s even automatic ones for you lazy buggers. If you want to coil it, the larger the coil the better. And the crème de la crème of the coil is the figure eight. This means the hose won’t develop a twist or a coil memory and when you pull it out, it’ll never tangle. Should two hoses need to be joined together, or a split cut out of a hose and rejoined, there are some excellent fittings available to join the two bits together. My experience has been that the brass fittings will outlast the plastic ones and, as a rule, are much more dependable – but also more costly. They will even tolerate being run over by the car. But plastic is okay – just make sure you replace them every other year. So, look after your hose and you’ll be a very happy gardener.

From the churches The most important thing What is the most important thing in your life? Something my wife says is, “Where you put your time and money is where your heart is." I think this is so true. Time and money are quite closely linked – after all, we give of our time at work to get money to pay for things we need and want. Having paid work is obviously very important. Most fulltime jobs are 40 hours a week or more. This is at least 8 hours of every day that is given to an employer and the reward we get is to be paid. Also, seeing as we often say we are busy and time poor, when we give of our time to someone, we don’t want that time wasted or taken for granted. When we are busy we have to be very careful where and to whom we give of our time. You think about it… giving time and money is really about us giving of ourselves. I mean we have a choice; we have a choice as to where we allocate our time and who with. Also, other than rent or mortgage payments and our food,

Mike Turner Beerwah State High School Chaplain it’s totally up to us where we spend our money. Cool hey? Everyone is different and we all have different goals in life. But in saying that, whether we have family around us or not, every person needs others to connect with. I believe that even more importantly than having good relationships with people, we also need a good relationship with God. So, by making an observation as to where a person chooses to put their time and money, you can get a fair idea of what the most important thing is in their life. I have been guilty many times in the past of having my priorities out of whack, but thankfully the loved ones in my life have been good enough to say something to help me get my priorities in order. I encourage you to take some time to consider your priorities today.

Is your trailer secure? The Sunshine Coast Crime Prevention Unit is urging residents to check the security of their trailers. Every week police are receiving reports of stolen trailers from residential areas and they are asking owners to take simple precautions to ensure that their trailers are secured. To assist with padlock security, we are posing the question “do you know what a shrouded padlock is?” Shrouded padlocks are stronger than normal padlocks. The shackle is made out of hardened alloy steel. The ‘shroud’ covers the shackle, preventing or making it harder for offenders to get bolt cutters in to cut the shackle, usually causing them to give up and move on to easier targets. Shrouded padlocks are a great way to improve your security and to deter offenders. These padlocks cost a little more than normal padlocks, however the peace of mind that comes with knowing your padlocks are going to be harder for offenders to cut and break into your belongings, far outweighs the cost. The padlocks can be key retained, meaning you need the key to lock them, which also prevents leaving the padlocks and your property unlocked. They are available in a variety of sizes and you can find more information by contacting your local locksmith.

In Memoriam In loving memory of

William "Frank" Petts 18/01/1926 - 25/07/2016 Formally of Maleny & Beerwah

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel, For no-one knows the heartache, That lies behind the smile, No-one knows how many times, I have broken down and cried, I want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. Sadly missed by his Wife of 67 years Wilma, children and their partners Ron and Ruth, Alan and Sandra, Len and Elizabeth, Jennifer and Kevin, Colleen and Alan and his 11 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren.

The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Neil Lovett In club games on Sunday Vince Carbery and Ken Barker each partnered a newcomer to the club in a doubles game. Hazel Kretschmer and Vince defeated Garth Cottrell and Ken 15-5. On Thursday, Ken with 19 hoops won against Vince, who scored 10, and Kath Smith beat Donna Manning and Hazel by 3 hoops, 11-8. Ken is travelling to Noosa on the weekend to compete in a high-prestige CAQ event, the Gibson Medal. We wish him well. He also joined Ted Gardner in lawn preparation this week, our regulars Nick Cram and Neil Lovett being unavailable. The Pennant season is drawing to a close, and while it is theoretically possible for our Lochwood Shield team to win, we are not holding our collective breath. Our Bray Shield team will be credited with a win this week, as the scheduled venue was Noosa, and they had to forfeit because their lawns are needed for the Gibson Medal event. Our lawns, where regular coaching is offered on Saturday mornings, are in the Maleny Showgrounds on Stanley River Road. For information about playing times, coaching, hiring or joining, ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 The new Moon on Sunday is with Mars, your ruling planet. The sign that it is right at the beginning of Leo, the first degree of 30! That is at 7.46pm. This is a powerful Lunation for you! You must be careful when you set in motion the things that you want to manifest, including love or making your way with any new partner. TAURUS April 21 - May 22 By the weekend the Sun will enter into the sign of Leo, leaving the birthdays of Cancer behind. Being a Taurus the New Moon on Sunday 23rd will push you into a family based activity. This is an action packed Lunation that focuses your attention and activity on domestic affairs and favours fresh starts. A good weekend for serious talks. GEMINI May 23 - June 21 Mars now enters the sign of Leo this week, energising your communication, information, ideas, and local affairs. Together with the Sun, both planets move you to make new life affirming procedures. So the New Moon on Sunday makes you take action to show off what you need and what you want, be it a new career or a new romance. CANCER June 22 - July 22 The Red Planet of Mars enters into Leo where it will remain for the next six weeks. This should heat up things financially for you as there is a New Moon in Leo on Sunday and that means you must watch exaggerated expenses or you will need to be motivated to earn more income. Your protective shell of your Crab sign will come in handy now.

the little red towel and it dropped to the floor. The little blue lady was shocked. She screamed, ran down the little red path, past the little red picket fence and got killed by a truck. LEO July 23 - August 22 This weekend is one of your best all year and you need to believe in a cause or be drawn to something that takes your fancy. An incredible connection is possible as well as celebratory gatherings. By the weekend your charm and wit will be blessed by the New Moon and that is concentrated in motivating your actions based on heartcentered love. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 Planetary energies focus all week into the health of your blood supply. There is an emphasis on the need to take a much needed rest over the next four weeks. This is because the New Moon and Mars, both being in Leo, which rules the blood supply, focuses on the need to eat and sleep well and not work your usual 80 hours per week! LIBRA September 23 - October 22 There are a lot of feelings running through your career values this week and what you do in the world at present. By the weekend with the New Moon and Mars in the sign of Leo, you will ask yourself two questions. One is “are you satisfied?” and the other is “would you like to introduce more soulful idealistic aspects into your work?” SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 This week finds you taking a methodical and analytical approach to thinking about new actions to be taken from this weekend, pertaining to earnings. The weekend finds you making decisions that are sound and preferably taking the long range view. You are in a period now for acting on recent decisions concerning your career.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22 Decisions are to be made based on confident information and practical logic about you and your partner talking about shared resources. This can be credit cards, mortgage repayments or part of a partner’s income. Just work on facts and don’t become emotional. With the sun entering a New Moon position on Sunday business is prime mover. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Let bygones be bygones, as this weekend rules out past mistakes and grievances and brings in a creative New Moon period. This may give a focus involving finances or investments over the next four weeks and calls for decisive action. Give undivided attention to joint accounts, credit or investments. Be open to adjust to new perspectives. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Having dealt with old emotional Cancerian issues of family, home and children, you are now ready to deal with a cool, scientific, objective approach. With Mars and the sun both entering Leo it shines upon good relationships making you more assertive, proud and romantic. Plant the seeds for a solid relationship of love and golden ties. PISCES February 20 - March 20 New contacts and fresh talks can play a key role in furthering work and projects. With Mars changing signs into Leo, and working with the New Moon in that sign on Sunday, it all lends support to your work and health over the next two weeks. Avail yourself of support, definitely go easy on yourself and allow the Universe to supply!
