FROM THE EDITOR IT has been a few months in the making and now the team at GC&M News is excited to announce that your new local business directory is now live. Our aim is that the website golocalhinterland.com.au - becomes your online go-to for local business services. I hope you agree with me when I say that it’s extremely user-friendly. Type in the trade or service you need and you’ll get a range of local businesses to choose from, each with a unique web page with key information. For local businesses this complements your newspaper advertising with an extremely cost-effective online presence that brings you even closer to your next customer. For households it is a valuable and extensive digital tool at your disposal for whatever trade, service or other business you require.

DISTRIBUTION JUDY TOMLINSON joinus@glasshousecountrytours.com.au

Myself or Tina and Lewis will be happy to answer any questions about the directory. We’re aiming for as few teething issues as possible but it’s been a big job for the team! I genuinely believe that by supporting the people that employ, buy and invest locally, we become a stronger and better connected community for it. On that point, another fantastic way to show support for hinterland businesses is to vote in Andrew Powell’s annual Glassies Awards. There are so many top-shelf small business operators and staff out there - check out p23-25 for full listings and good luck to all nominees.

Glass House vandals

By Jennifer Kent

VANDALS have caused thousands of dollars damage at Glass House Mountains Lookout after using fireworks and spray paint, while also breaking into storerooms, stealing electrical wire and smashing toilets. Acting Ranger in Charge Cheryl Thomson said police had now been called to investigate the damage. “What is of real concern to rangers is the use of boxes of fireworks at the lookout, as this is a major fire risk and can frighten native wildlife,” Ms Thomson said. “The vandals also stole cleaning supplies and removed electrical wiring from our storeroom, and they caused thousands of dollars of damage to our water infrastructure and the toilets. “We have referred the latest incidence of vandalism and the use of fireworks to the Queensland Police Service, and anyone with information is urged to make contact.”

BEERWAH State High School has been recognised for the successful implementation of the school’s program, ‘Success for all through collaborative case management’ having recently received a regional commendation for Excellence in the Secondary Years through the Queensland Government’s Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools. The program was implemented by the Beerwah SHS Leadership Team and school principal Lyn McDonald shared she was so proud of the way in which her staffing team have embraced the program designed to equip teachers with a common understanding of the curriculum. “The program has been a collaboration between teachers, teaching staff and third parties to build a common understanding with detailed information and of the curriculum through case management and teaching teams,” said Lyn. “The overall approach towards effective and authentic intentional collaboration has been successful in building up teachers’ ability for leadership, and they have really

Beerwah State High has been recognised for its innovative case management program valued their time working together in moderation with their colleagues. “As a result, staff have increased their assessment literacy and confidence to plan engaging and differentiated lessons, whilst also enhancing students understanding of the achievement standards through learning walls.” Case management or teaching teams were established in years seven and eight English and Mathematics and deputy principal Scott Siddle shared that the teaching staff have really taken the program on board and embraced it, with results showcasing an upward trend in academic outcomes in these areas. “There’s been many initiatives

implemented throughout the years, and this is by far the best one received,” said Scott. “The time spent with colleagues and leaders has enabled them to do their job more effectively. They really see the value in the process and the way in which it is helping their teaching.” Lyn said that over a third of the school’s teaching staff had so far participated in the program and the goal over the next few years is for that to reach 100%. The program is currently being rolled out this semester to the science and humanities faculties. “We are confident of ongoing success as we continue to build teacher’s capability,” she said.

New initiative aims to keep older Aussies rollin’

‘Farm animals’ returned after community campaign

By Kirra Livingstone MALENY Bowls Club is taking a step towards curbing low physical activity rates among older Australians by encouraging them to “roll back the clock” through lawn bowls. Roll Back the Clock is a Bowls Australia initiative, in partnership with Sport Australia, that aims to boost physical activity rates among Australians aged 65 and over through bowls, light exercise and education. Presently, as little as 25-percent of Australians over-65 meet the Department of Health’s physical activity guidelines of 30 minutes of activity per day. Health-related reasons, including physical and mental health, are the main barriers for older Australians participating in sport or physical activities and bowls is seen as a low-impact, socially-inclusive activity that can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages. Maleny Bowls Club’s Margaret Ginns said that bowling was not only great physically, but also mentally. “The physical side of bowling is really beneficial as it’s not hard on the body but keeps you moving without the stress,” she said. “Then of course there’s the social aspect, talking and playing with friends and clubmates, which is priceless.” The club turns 85 in September and is hoping to celebrate the occasion with old and new members. Roll Back The Clock programs incorporate a twopart activity lasting 30 minutes each, targeting both the body and mind through bowls, functional training, fitness and wellness education, and socialisation.

Maleny Bowls Club’s Les Bennett and Margaret Ginns Sessions are adapted for individuals, with benefits ranging from enabling participants to perform activities of daily life more easily, to withstanding injuries and providing a sense of accomplishment and achievement. In addition to the physical health benefits, engaging in physical activity and group sports for older Australians provides increasingly important opportunities for socialisation, peersupport, and conversation that reduces the possibility for loneliness related physical and mental illnesses. Roll Back The Clock will be staged at Maleny Bowls Club, from Wednesday July 27, 2022 from 2pm to 3pm, with the eight-week program costing $80. Contact club chair, Wendy, on 0438399604 for more details.

A FAMILY devastated by the theft of sentimental animal ornaments from their property have been reunited with them following a public campaign for their return. Wendy Jeffrey said she was left heartbroken when her late father’s fibreglass farm animals were stolen from her property. The animals, which ‘mysteriously’ move about the yard, are a much-loved part of the Beerwah community. But on Friday July 8 the animals were stolen, prompting Wendy to post for assistance on community Facebook pages including Beerwatch. Hundreds of people posted and shared the story and at 4.30am Sunday morning the farm friends were returned. Wendy said they heard a car pull up about 4.30am and dogs barking, and was “beyond excited” when she saw the animals had been returned. “I would like to keep them outside, but I will have security technology set up and hopefully that will deter people from pinching them again,” she said. “But everyone gets so much joy out of them, and we would like to put them back there, and I think with the publicity that it had, it would be a really game person to pinch them again.” Wendy said she wanted to thank the hinterland community who helped share the news of the theft.

Road’s six-month delay

New residential lots on cards for Maleny By Mitch Gaynor

A LARGE vacant block on Dixon Avenue at Maleny will be reconfigured into 15 residential lots ranging in size from 1,200 to 1,241 square metres. A development application by Bignose Developments Pty Ltd is seeking approval for reconfiguration of a 2.84 hectare lot bordered between Dixon Avenue to the west and Hilltop Crescent to the north. The proposal involves subdividing the area into 16 lots including 15 residential lots and a 5,012m2 drainage reserve held over a community title scheme. The development is proposed to be undertaken over three stages. The proposal is over a low-density residential zone and will include a private internal road with widened pavements and kerb, and channel and concrete footpaths during their respective stage of development.Surveyor and town planner CadCon states that the internal private road has been designed in accordance with the standards for an access street and will have a six-metre wide pavement with minimum four-metre wide verge widths.

Matters raised at a prelodgment meeting with council included issues that the proposal represents a “significant intensification” in residential development in the area and “it is appropriate that the proposal connects to reticulated sewer in accordance with the provisions of the planning scheme for urban lots”. In response the developer said that it has received in-principle support from Unitywater and SEQ Water for a community title subdivision and sewer pump station. An ecological assessment report found that there were no conservation-significant plant species found. There was also a high level of weed infestation. “The abundance of native fauna is… expected to be significantly limited by the near monoculture of camphor laurel and privet,” the assessment found. “Very limited native fauna foraging resources are present on the site.” A creek line to the south of the development is set to be retained and rehabilitated.

CONSTRUCTION of Bells Creek Arterial Road has been delayed by about six months due to significant rainfall levels along the coast throughout 2022. The $70 million project – which connects from Roys Road at the Bruce Highway interchange to Caloundra West - will reduce hinterland-to-coast drive times by about five minutes each way. The 11.6km road was slated for completion later this year, but a Transport and Main Roads spokesperson told GC&M News that the Bells Creek Arterial Road would now be completed in mid-2023, weather and construction conditions permitting. “Construction of this major arterial has been impacted by ongoing wet weather, with the Sunshine Coast experiencing some of its wettest months in history this year,” the spokesperson said. When complete, Bells Creek Arterial Road will create a second access to the Bruce Highway, with expectations that congestion will be reduced for the 50,000 motorists who currently use Caloundra Road to connect to the highway. Despite the floods and storms that swept through the hinterland in March this year, the Steve Irwin Way upgrade is on track for completion in late 2022. “As with all construction, this project has been impacted by unprecedented summer rainfall and ongoing wet weather,” the TMR spokesperson said. “Works are progressing well and are expected to be completed in late 2022, weather and construction conditions permitting.”

End of an era for Maleny IGA owners, Rob and Sam Outridge By Sonia Isaacs Clark ALTHOUGH they may have thought they might ‘slip quietly out the back door’, outgoing Maleny IGA owners, Rob and Samantha Outridge acknowledge that was unlikely to happen following news of their decision to sell. Since the public announcement, there has been an outpouring of community appreciation for their 27-year commitment at the helm of the thriving Maleny business. Settlement is set to occur on Monday August 1, with Seasons IGA network taking over ownership of the popular hinterland grocery store. Speaking to GC&M News, Rob said

that after “pouring their heart and soul and everything they owned” into the business, after 27 years he and his wife Sam felt it was time for new owners, who would have the energy to keep driving the business forward. He said the immediate plan was to take six months off to recalibrate and to put a bit of space between thirty years of retail, and then make decisions from there. “I’m too young to retire so I’ll end up doing something. It’ll have to be something that’ll push my buttons and get me up in the morning because that’s what this business has done for the last 27 years,” he said. Regarding the sale of their business and the ending of an era, Rob said he and Sam were feeling emotions of reflection and gratitude for all of the interactions, opportunities and community involvement over the years rather than sadness. He said Rob and Sam Outridge with John Drayton at the Maleny like any good small business, the IGA was store opening, October 1996

at its core a reflection of the local community, and it filled him with joy to see local suppliers not only provide local products and services to the store but also have the confidence to shop there. He said the business had employed over 1,000 people over the years - sometimes entire families - and they’d seen kids who got their first job at the IGA grow up and make a go of their lives. “It’s such a good feeling to see these kids go on to be successful and feel we played a part in that. We now employ the kids of children we’ve employed - so it’s been a generational thing and as owners we find that really gratifying,” said Rob. Rob commented that over the years he had seen how Maleny was an unbelievably engaged community, with the IGA supporting 150 community groups. “This community is so engaged that it rewards you when you are perceived to be doing something right which most times we do, but it can also kick you when the perception is that you are not

doing something they like. Every time we have invested money into this business through renovation or expansion the community has rewarded us.” Rob recalled that while there were many good times over the 27 years, Covid proved to be an extremely difficult period with some of the publics’ response to the pandemic disappointing. “There was so much fear, and when people are fearful they don’t think logically and they disengage their manners. The vast majority of people were fine but there were some people that didn’t behave well and that was an eye-opener for me,” said Rob.

UPDATE

Rob and Sam, 1997 Rob said he was just happy over the years that he and Sam had been able to make a contribution, and he felt a great sense of fulfillment that they had been able to add value while they had been a part of the Maleny community. “We’ve employed over 1,000 people, 10-15 per cent of our sales are local products, and for a lot of those businesses we are like an incubator for them providing them with sales. These people shop back in the store so there is a multiplier effect if we can keep people shopping in town – the whole community benefits the longer you can keep the dollars circulating within the local community.” Rob said while the family had no plans to move from the Sunshine Coast, they had booked a five-week holiday in

Croatia which they were looking forward to. He hoped he would have more time to play a few rounds of golf and planned to do a bit of local travel with Sam by hopping in the car and seeing the country – a luxury of free time they previously hadn’t had a chance to experience. Seasons IGA Group own ten IGA’s including ones at Caloundra, Noosa and Yandina. Rob said he was very comfortable with them and felt the new owners would be a good fit for the business. “We wanted to sell our business to them as we know they treat their people well and we know they treat their communities well,” he said. “They are coming into Maleny with open eyes, and they’ve said it’ll be business as usual and we’ll look after the community, they just run a good show.” Hinterland Heritage: Maleny’s first main street businesses P22

IT’S with a degree of sadness, but also understanding, that after a marathon 27 years of commitment to doing good business in Maleny, that we say farewell to Rob and Sam Outridge from their Maleny Supa IGA. From a progressive and complete rebuild of the Universal Providers building over that period (who remembers that old timber building of 30 years ago, with its various pitches of flooring that made wheeling trolleys down the aisle a full cardio work out at times), but even during all of renovations, they always kept the doors open. Talking about keeping the doors open, remember in 2013 when ex-cyclone Oswald shut down the power network for day after day and Outridge’s IGA provided access to their generator back-up power to charge phones and provided credit for purchases as the Eftpos system was down! The compassion and grace of these guys and their commitment to doing good business is outstanding and an inspiration to all.

with Spencer Shaw Chamber President

But wait there’s more, they also founded the Community Benefit Fund, that’s pumped back close to $2 million dollars (so far) into our community over the years, through over 150 community groups and organisations. In finishing, who would have thought an IGA could be a destination! When we have friends visiting from interstate or overseas, they have often already heard about the Maleny IGA or quickly fall in love with it, the epic selection of groceries and the smiling helpful staff of all ages. Congratulations Rob and Sam for an amazing job well done and your epic contribution to Maleny, thank you.

Maleny Musician brought to centre stage THE Refinery Showcase took place on July 5, which saw 15 entrepreneurs pitching their creative business endeavours including Maleny musician Hayden Hack. South African born and now living in Maleny, Hayden is a musician who plays a funk style of music, and was picked out of 80 applicants to be given the opportunity to showcase his entrepreneurial talent. He said although his pitch wasn’t written and rehearsed like many of the other entrepreneurs, the messaging was very close to his heart. “My pitch was about collaborating with creatives outside of my field and finding new places where music could ‘live’ to add to events of areas where music was not thought of before,” he said.

“I was truly shocked because everyone who pitched seemed to have such a clear plan of their project, whereas I didn’t feel mine was so clear at that point. “Most of the applicants had an actual pitch but I just spoke from the heart on the spot, as I kind of did on my actual final pitch, it probably comes from playing so much improvised music.” Hayden told GC&M News he has learned a lot from several people involved in The Refinery’s program, and he wished them all the best in their endeavours.

“I know the tools I’ve been given by Tom Allen, Megan Rowland, Alison Mooney, Liz Burcham and the support of Bronwyn Adams and mentors who generously imparted their knowledge, will help me achieve any goal I give myself,” he said. “But it’s even more the new community I found in sharing time and experience and support that was warming, everyone who got into the program are such amazing human beings. The most important thing is to expand the community, we have to do things together, especially now in these crazy times.” When times were tough, especially during the Maleny Lane debacle, Hayden said the Maleny community, particularly Steve McLeish, helped him continue to play music. “I love Maleny and its unbelievably amazing community, they introduced me to the true meaning of community,” he said. “It was thanks to them that I continued playing music at all. Especially Steve McLeish. It’s what he said to me that turned it all around.”

Beerwah Stationery has a new owner By Kirra Livingstone

BEERWAH Stationery’s new owner is promising to bring an artistic flair to the outlet after purchasing it form Kylie York in late June. New owner Kym Garth had only recently moved to the hinterland from Brisbane and was struggling to find the right project until she heard Kylie’s business was on the market. “The minute I walked in I was blown away, I have always loved stationery because I’m an artist, so I love colourful things,” she said. “Kylie has just built up this beautiful reputation and the people are lovely, and I just love it.” Having previous business experience along with printing and administration skills, Kym took the plunge saying she had plans to introduce professional quality art supplies and other art workshops. “I’m going to keep the business exactly how it’s going, but I want to involve more local artists so they can bring in and display their artwork, I really want to engage with the community that way,” she said. “I want to add some haberdashery and that is going to be my expanding for now and I think that is going to be enough for me until I get my grasp on everything.

news

“I’ve been talking to all the people coming in and they are so excited for me to be adding that sort of stuff.” Kym said she is very excited to own this business now and wants to be a big part of the community. “I just really want to be a part of the community and hopefully offer something that and keep offering something new,” she said. “I’m excited in where I’m going to go… and this is my purpose to wake up in the morning.”

LOCAL hairdresser Natalie Hazelden is raising money to fund her opportunity to train those in critical poverty with the Hair Aid team going to The Philippines in January 2023. This is her third overseas project - she has been project team leader on trips to Indonesia in 2018 and 2019. Covid put a stop to her plans for 2020 but now with borders open, the need and demand to learn new skills is high. Natalie, who runs a boutique home salon in Landsborough, also donates her time and skills to support local homeless and community cuts on the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. Hair Aid works with the poorest community members to teach them livelihood skills overseas so they can earn money to feed, clothe and house themselves and their children. The team will teach five different haircuts, so participants can begin their own micro business and earn a living with hairdressing skills. The locations can be safe houses for women and children or they can also be churches and schools or community hubs. Hair aid works closely with Destiny Rescue Australia, a well known organisation that rescues and restores underage children trapped in prostitution or sexual exploitation.

“This fantastic cause is so close to my heart, as we will be delivering the training personally, directly to the people in need and giving them the gift of our hair knowledge, teaching them and further generations,” said Natalie. “The old saying ‘give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day...Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime’ resonates with what we are doing.” Natalie is holding a few events in September to support Hair Aid and to fund for herself to help, including donating every haircut on September 7 as part of a global Cut’a’thon. She is also holding a fundraising lunch on Saturday, September 10. To find out more, visit Natalie’s Facebook page: Natalie Hazelden Hairdressing, or 0408 743 689.

Mooloolah Men’s Shed fast-tracked

Pride of Workmanship Awards 2022

AFTER years of discussions, numerous setbacks and bureaucratic delays, the long-held vision for a Mooloolah Men’s Shed is finally set to become a reality, with a project completion date scheduled for January 2023. Members of the Mooloolah Community Men’s Shed Inc. (MCMS) and Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA) are understandably ecstatic that after four long years of discouraging hold-ups and set-backs, the project is now being fast tracked earthworks scheduled to commence next month. Colin Roy, president of MCMS said the association had been advised by supplier Sunshine Sheds and Garages, that the custom shed kit will be delivered in September, and weather permitting, the build to commence October 2022, with a possibility the space may be ready to be furnished by Christmas 2022. He said this news was both exciting and a huge relief after all the years of frustration. “This project is set to deliver a fantastic community facility for Mooloolah, and a proactive way to support the mental health and wellbeing of our men. “We look forward to creating a welcoming and safe space for our local men to connect and socialise with

MCMS committee member Trevor Stewart said the shed will be approximately 400m2 consisting of a woodworking space, a metal workspace, general meeting area, kitchen and office space. Libraries’ celebrity spotlight welcomes writer Sarah Williams

Stellar launch for Surge Rock Spectacular By Sonia Isaacs Clark

STUDENTS, parents, teachers, and principals from five local state high schools including Beerwah and Maleny State High, rocked up for the SURGE High School Rock Spectacular launch held at Mooloolaba Music Centre on Wednesday July 13. It was a stellar night of live music, short videos, and networking for the approximately 70 guests in attendance. Attendees were able to participate in a Q&A forum, with a panel made up of special guests from the music industry including Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson, Head of Music at USC Dr Andy Ward, Head of TAFE at School Queensland Bernadette Wilson, and team members from Caloundra Music Festival and Mooloolaba Music Centre. Mike Turner from Beerwah State

High school said it was an incredible night that had everyone involved really engaged and excited about the showcase at the Events Centre on August 17. He said the key theme of the event was about young people championing positive mental health through music, with an aim to help young aspiring musicians make important connections that will help them find their career pathway in music. “It was incredible to see the generosity of talented and accomplished music industry leaders, who have been willing and excited about investing time into young local rock bands through this event,” said Mike. Tickets for the event are on sale through the Events Centre website from Monday July 25.

SARAH Williams is a bestselling, award-winning author and a member of Sunshine Coast Libraries. Sarah is a frequent visitor to Maleny Library where she regularly runs the Writing Friday sessions for the Queensland Writers’ Centre. Writing Friday is a volunteer program that connects writers in their local community. Libraries caught up with Sarah recently, to find out what she thinks about Maleny Library. “I love visiting my local library. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and always happy to help,” said Ms Williams.

As well as mentoring writers, Sarah visits the library because she loves borrowing books and magazines for herself and her children. As a busy mother of four, she does a lot of borrowing! “A love of reading should be encouraged from a young age and my children love exploring the rows and rows of books and each getting to choose one to borrow,” said Ms Williams. Sarah grew up using libraries and said that through books she enjoyed escaping the everyday and journeying to places like Narnia, Green Gables and Hogwarts. “I was never alone when I had a book and now that I am a fiction-writer I love being able to share the places and people that live in my imagination”. Her imagination is busy as she has numerous publications, including the series Heart of the Hinterland, where locals may recognise familiar locations and fellow Hinterland characters. Sarah’s books are available to borrow from Sunshine Coast Libraries. Visit the Library website https://library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ to reserve Sarah’s books now.

A SMALLER number of members attended an informal meeting in June. The president, secretary and vice president were unable to attend. John Innes gave a very interesting talk on growing and taking care of the different types of orchids. John has been growing and showing orchids for many years and has a great deal of knowledge about growing them successfully. Woodies’ wonderful weekend Contributed by David Friend

“THE Woodies Wonderful Weekend of Wood was a huge success” said the event co-ordinator and vice president Julie Breen. It was held on April 30 - May 1 at the Blackall Range Woodworkers Guild (also known as the Montville Woodies) headquarters. “People came from all over southeast Queensland to enjoy the varied activities on display, and no-one was disappointed,” according to Woodies president Max Barrenger. Box making,

groups

scroll-sawing, pyrography and other skills were on display as well as a huge and wonderful array of timber items made by members for sale on both days. President Max and vice president and co-ordinator Julie expressed enthusiastic thanks to everyone involved in the Woodies Wonderful Weekend of Wood including the public, the media for excellent publicity, and Woodies members who assisted to make the event such a wonderful success.

AT OUR June meeting our guest speaker was a meteorologist who gave a very lively and interesting talk. He explained in layman’s terms how weather develops. His talk was followed by many interesting questions from the members. Three new members joined the club and an additional six have put in their applications to join. Our planned trip to Stradbroke Island had to be cancelled due to extreme bad weather. The trip is now planned for later this year in November. Our next trip is to Pomona’s Majestic Theatre to take us back to the silent movie era, followed

by lunch at the Black Ant restaurant in Kin Kin. Our next speaker will be Mike Keane, an expert in Aviation matters, with a background as a navigator, air force jet pilot and founding executive of a UK budget airline. He will give us his view on the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines MH370. If you are interested in hearing him speak you are most welcome. Please let us know by sending an email to malenyprobus@gmail.com. We always welcome new members. We meet at 10am at the Uniting Church, Landsborough Road, Maleny, on the 4th Wednesday of the month.

SOS... Art meets the Environment

CULTURE

with Dr Michael Whiticker

Finding inspiration for your music making PART 2

WELL-KNOWN Montville artist Jim Cox and Reesville author Elaine Green have long been friends, and have recently combined their creativity showcased in the exhibition ‘SOS..Save our Species’. It will be held at Mary Cairncross Reserve Gallery, Mountain View Road, Maleny from July 16-31, from 10am–2pm. A book of the same name will be launched alongside the artwork, with both asking the public to look at this crisis from a different viewpoint. Jim spent Covid isolation imagining how to help save our species by creating 24 artworks of selected animals, imagining them in military formation and raging against our activities that threaten their survival. Despite the serious intent of these works, they are beautiful, colourful and playful, ranging from caricature to realism. Elaine has totally synced with Jim’s work having written words ‘from’ each animal as if they were talking. Australian animals are totally unique to this land. After only 230 years of our arrival they are now at risk of extinction. A program where local environmentalists will be present to talk about their contributions to addressing this crisis, and how you may assist, will be available through Jim’s website www.jim-cox-montville.com

Last month the suggestions in PART 1 of this series hopefully seeded something useful for you. I’d like to extend that in this article with some tips which might take you further away from your chosen instrument, but who knows where that might lead. Let’s jump in the deep end to start with you having a go at a different instrument. It will challenge you in unexpected ways and new ideas and possibilities will appear. Or how about a test for a keen player which would be to not touch their instrument for a period but keep studying it, considering new repertoire, styles, rhythms and influences. You will surely pick it up again with fresh insights. An alternative, one step removed from music, would be to practice in another artistic field. Or it might be even simpler than that. For instance why not study and look for inspiration in the visual arts? I have found this to be especially stimulating. Working in silence with the mind contemplating textures and structures or wandering around an image or scene. Extend this by getting into the art and practice of someone working in a field unrelated to music. A landscape photographer works with the available light found only at certain times of the day or under certain weather conditions. First light for example can be an inspiration to a photographer. How stimulating might that time of day be for a musician, hearing the extraordinary quiet broken only by the birds’ chorus? Most photographers work in the moment capturing

the scene before them. Generally they take many shots with their digital equipment trusting that on returning to their studio the perfect shot or series of shots will unfold before them. Like them, why not take your instrument into the bush and play it. Take a battery powered amp if you need it. Record what you are playing and then go back to your studio to listen to what you came up with. A composer colleague of mine who was also an ornithologist insisted that the dawn chorus in certain national parks in Australia rings in particular keys. As well as making field recordings of such sites he would take along his keyboard or percussion instruments and improvise with the birds. If nothing else such communing with nature can only be a beautiful experience in the moment. Working with dancers was an inspiration for me. They think so differently with pieces they are creating. As a musician I move through a piece guided by the sounds being made, but the dancers are thinking with their body, with one shape or movement leading to another. Improvising with them is a lot of fun. At times they lead and you follow their gestures and shapes, then at other times they might let your strong rhythms dominate the work being created in that moment. This sort of opportunity can present itself in surprising ways. As a starter you could ask a local yoga or tai chi group if you can accompany their class, and see where it goes from there. You don’t always need a plan... sometimes you need to just breathe, trust and see what happens.

Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

YOU Pathways and cycleways

In March 2016, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News reported: “It’s great news that Cr Rick Baberowski has committed to completing the footpath between Beerwah and Glasshouse if he gets re-elected, this really ought to have been planned and done a long time ago – still better late than never.” And here is a quote from Cr Rick Baberowski’s Facebook page at the time: “Building pathways and cycleways is part of council’s job, and I’m proud of what we got done this term, and excited for what we’ve set up for next term. For example, the Kello Road/Beerwah Sportsground Pathway was built 2014/15, and is the first stage of a pathway link that will fully connect Glass House Mountains and Beerwah. I am determined to complete that link next term if re-elected.” Ok, it is now 2022 and no path/cycleway. Come on Rick, where is our path? D.M.West. Glasshouse Mountains

Climate is always changing

I am tired of all this fuss from the Global Warmers. The climate has always changed. Coral bleaching on the reef is a regular event. Floods, droughts, cyclones and bushfires have always happened. Seal levels in the Pacific are said to be rising but there is no change in Sydney Harbour or Port of Brisbane. Australia exports uranium, coal and gas but gas exploration is discouraged and coal is demonized.

These Greenies and climate alarmists are putting Australian economy and sovereignty at risk. Some ignorant people will believe whatever they are told if it is repeated often enough. Graeme Tosh Maleny

Don’t abandon our heritage

We found your actions in publishing a brief outline of relevant statistics appertaining to the hinterland demographics most interesting. Thank you for your initiative. We should like to pass some comment on the religion aspect if we may. The strong demise of believers in the Lord Jesus is not surprising since for the last couple of decades or more our Government has abandoned the foundation of our heritage. In fact, religion is considered a bit of a virus, with it possibly being abandoned in our school curriculum and compulsory teaching of evolution is the new gospel message. Even today it is only a theory, there is no proof. It is fair to say that probably more than 50,000 people are recorded as having witnessed the miracles performed by the Son of God, Jesus, yet not one person has found evidence of transmutation of any species. Even one of the fathers of evolution Charles Darwin is recorded in the latter part of his life as saying “As by this (his) theory innumerable transitional forms must have existed, why do we not find them embedded in countless numbers in the crust of the earth? Why is not all nature in confusion, instead of

being as we see them, well defined species?”. If you dear local, are not a believer and you would like to know more, then talk to one of the local pastors or ministers. There are several local churches that advertise each edition of this noble publication, but try a phone call first and try and speak to the pastor. Name and address supplied Glasshouse Mountains

Maleny – Open for Business By Friends of Pattemore House

AS we celebrate the enormous contribution that the Outridge family have made to Maleny, here is an extract from the Friends of Pattemore House research about the first businesses in Maleny – and some of the evolution of Maleny’s iconic IGA Store. It may surprise some to know that the township of Maleny was not gazetted by the Government, rather, Maleny town was developed on freehold land subdivided by the owners. This process began in 1890 when John Graves sold six acres of Portion 1282, an original selection, to Mr J. and Mr T. Lahey, who built Maleny’s first Sawmill (A). Further subdivision of Portion 1282 began in earnest in the early 1900s, with the sales of the ‘Dixon Farms Estate’ billed in 1912 as the “Opportunity of the Century”. Businesses clustered around the Obi Obi Creek as the township started to grow. On the southern approach to the creek, Dunlop’s Butchery had been opened in 1898 (G) on the site of today’s Maleny Primary School, and the Maleny

Hotel was built in 1907 (H). John Tytherleigh’s Store (E) opened in 1909, on the North bank of the Obi Obi and Tesch’s Blacksmiths opened in 1909 (F) also close to the creek. After the construction of the Butter Factory (B) in 1903, the Butter Company Store (C) followed in 1906, being the first store in Maleny proper, established by the Maleny Co Operative Dairy Association filling an urgent need in the district. It later moved to a large building in 1907 (D) where the ES&A

heritage

Bank was also housed. A thriving town called Maleny was now firmly on the map! John Tytherleigh built his first provisions store in Maple Street near the corner of Maple and Teak Streets. Mr Ben Rickaby established a saddlery business in Tytherleigh’s original store, that was followed by a real estate business. On closure of the real estate, Mr Tytherleigh moved the old building further up Maple Street, where it was joined into a new building with his second store (that became today’s Maleny IGA). His original 1906 building became the Maleny Post Office (Maleny Newsagency today). Tytherleigh’s original building was extensively renovated in 1994 by John and Alison Frew, under the banner of Universal Providers. It housed the Maleny Supa Valu Foodmarket and Price Rite Hardware. Rob and Samantha Outridge purchased the business from the Frews in October 1995 and during 1996 undertook yet another massive renovation – on what was once Tytherleigh’s store.

ELECTED Support for independent living FOR many Australians, planning for retirement can be a complicated process. If you are starting to find it harder to do the things you have routinely done for years, it is time to start thinking about the support on offer. Many people contact my office with little knowledge about their options to stay independent for longer at home. They also have difficulty navigating these options. Help at home looks different for everybody. Some of you may find it difficult to clean, others may need safety improvements in the home. Getting help is easier if you understand your choices and know what questions to ask. Regular assistance includes support like personal care, transport, household jobs, and social activities and shortterm help includes situations like recovery from an accident or illness.

IT’S been a huge month for us all here in Caloundra and the Hinterland. The Queensland State budget has arrived, we started Term three at school, and we had even more rain. Importantly, the budget has seen funding go to health, education, the environment, sport, and rail and roads which are all integral for the Hinterland. With the budget putting Queensland back in surplus, unemployment being down to 4% (the lowest it’s been since 2008) and getting more clarity for residents on the infrastructure that will change their day to day, I’m happy to be in this Government. I’m going to touch on the highlights of the budget, some local events I think you should know about and a little update on what I think is next. Budget highlights for the Hinterland include health, rail and road. This Labor Government have committed $23 billion into our health budget because we want Queenslanders to have better health outcomes - a record health investment. We’ve hit the ace when it comes to road and rail with extra funding to the Bells Creek Arterial Road due to be completed

with Jason Hunt State Member for Caloundra

next year, and stage one of the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade. Speaking of aces, there will be a free Family Fun Day at the Landsborough Tennis Club on Sunday the 24th of July from 10am - 1pm. It is going to be a huge event and so much fun! I cannot wait to get there and serve a few aces with my family.

HEALTH Delivering the roads to connect us

I’M pleased to have delivered a range of items for the Division 5 community. Upgrades to the Warriors Football Club at Palmwoods, beautifying Woombye, maintaining the green heart at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and upgrades to Maroochy Botanic Gardens are some of Sunshine Coast Council’s $847 million 2022–23 Budget highlights for Division 5. One of my top priorities is to keep our small communities, residents and farmers connected on our country roads. That’s why this budget will deliver upgrades, reseals, lane widening, rehabilitations and bridge improvements to several roads including Brandenburg Road in Mooloolah Valley, Stage 5 works for Glenview Road in Glenview, portions of Perrins Road and Mossy Bank Roads in Eudlo and various roads in Maleny, Chevallum, Wootha and Woombye.

Road reseal update

A number of last year’s road reseal and rehabilitation projects will be carried out over the next two financial years as a result of the rain events in February and March, and again in May. Detailed inspections have been carried out to assess the extent of the road repairs which have now been approved by the Queensland Reconstruction

with Winston Johnston Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council Authority. Some of the roads and land slips require a very detailed design so please be patient while we undertake these works as well as continue our scheduled maintenance program.

Cool Homes

Are you buying, building or renovating a Sunshine Coast home? Get your hands on the Cool Homes booklet and compass to help you discover what makes a comfortable home all year round. Learn how to take advantage of our climate, understand where to put rooms, how to maximise light and breezes, which building materials to consider, the value of gardens to help cool your home and how to create a home that doesn’t need air conditioning running all summer and heating all winter. Scan the QR code on the back of the booklet to access the compass on your smart phone.

WELLBEING

Long term high-fat diet expands waistline and shrinks brain NEW research shows that fatty foods may not only be adding to your waistline but also playing havoc with your brain. An international study led by UniSA neuroscientists Professor Xin-Fu Zhou and Associate Professor Larisa Bobrovskaya has established a clear link between mice fed a high-fat diet for 30 weeks, resulting in diabetes, and a subsequent deterioration in their cognitive abilities, including developing anxiety, depression and worsening Alzheimer’s disease. Mice with impaired cognitive function were also more likely to gain excessive weight due to poor metabolism caused by brain changes. Researchers from Australia and China have published their findings in Metabolic Brain Disease. UniSA neuroscientist and biochemist Associate Professor Larisa Bobrovskaya says the research adds to the growing body of evidence linking chronic obesity and diabetes with Alzheimer’s disease, predicted to reach 100 million cases by 2050. “Obesity and diabetes impair the central nervous system, exacerbating psychiatric disorders and cognitive decline. We demonstrated this in our study with mice,” Assoc Prof Bobrovskaya says. In the study, mice were randomly

allocated a standard diet or a high-fat diet for 30 weeks, starting at eight weeks of age. They were monitored for glucose and insulin tolerance tests and cognitive dysfunction. The mice on the high-fat diet gained a lot of weight, developed insulin resistance and started behaving abnormally compared to those fed a standard diet. Genetically modified Alzheimer’s disease mice showed a significant deterioration of cognition and pathological changes in the brain while fed the high fat diet. “Obese individuals have about a 55 per cent increased risk of developing depression, and diabetes will double that risk,” Assoc Prof Bobrovskaya says.

The Big Kahuna

Some time ago, many years ago actually, somebody said to me that they had a bone to pick with my “Big Kahuna”. At first, I did not know what they were referring to, but apparently something had gone wrong in their life. They were struggling with the age-old question, “why is this happening to me?” They thought that they had gotten the rough end of the pineapple and they reckoned that my “Big Kahuna” should have been looking after them better. I had never heard of God being referred to by that name, but God does get called a lot of names from “Loving Father” to “The Bloke Upstairs.” I sometimes refer to God as the one who is “Totally Other” because our finite minds cannot understand or comprehend the nature or person of God because he is so different from anything we know even though the Bible tells us that we are made in the image of God.

By Jennifer Kent

with Tom Jantke Calvary Lutheran Church Glasshouse Mountains When Moses asked God at the burning bush what was the name of the one who was sending him back to the people of Israel in Egypt, God simply said that his name is “I am who I am”, sometimes translated as Jehovah or more correctly JAHWEH. The true nature of God may be something of a mystery for us, but God has not left us totally in the dark. In the Bible, God is revealed as a Triune (threein-one) God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This Triune God relates to us chiefly through the Son, Jesus Christ, (who was, and is, both true God and a true human being) and who lived, died, and was raised for us, to show us that God is above all a loving and forgiving God who wants to have a meaningful personal relationship with each one of us.

A UNIQUE event is being conducted on Saturday, 27th August 2022, by the Maleny High School Chaplaincy Committee as a fundraiser for the Maleny High chaplain, Donna Turner. Money raised will support Donna’s work in providing services and running programs for students. Following the success of the Horse Trail Ride in 2021, the program has been expanded to include the trail ride, two Mountain Bike courses, a professionally prepared orienteering event as well as a guided bushwalk. It’s a program for anyone who just wants to enjoy some organised, non-competitive recreational activities in a picturesque setting at 11 Bretons Road, Crohamhurst (off Bald Knob Road, 20 minutes from Maleny, Landsborough or Peachester). Various activities will take place between 8.00am and 4.00pm. Participants are welcome to “come try” an activity that they feel suits their interests. You won’t go hungry as there’s a scrumptious sausage sizzle, drinks,

Jobs for the yard in August

• It’s a good time to fertilise and prune hibiscus so they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer. • If you have a veggie garden, don’t forget to water it once or twice a week. Although it’s cooler, the drier winter winds will drain the moisture from the soil. • If you’re growing pineapples, give them a side dressing of complete fertiliser in late August. They like acid soils, so avoid using lime or dolomite. • Spray the flowers of your mango tree with a copper based spray to fight anthracnose disease. • Plant your new roses now. Bagged and bare-rooted roses are in plentiful supply. • Fertilise your existing rose bushes by mulching around them with cow manure.

• Keep your strawberries fruiting with a fortnightly feed of fish and seaweed solutions. • Divide your Michaelmas daisies and rudbeckias now. Replant and fertilise with a seaweed and fish emulsion. • Apply a light application of a lawn fertiliser to give your lawns a small boost into spring.

IN THE • Start to lower your mower blade height, as the lengthening days allow more sunlight, so less leaf area is needed. • Established passionfruit vines should be fertilised in early spring, use up to 1kg of blood and bone with 100g of sulphate of potash added, spread onto moist soil and mulch well. • Make sure fruit fly traps are in place by late August. • This is a good time to clean out a water garden. Divide waterlilies every year if they are in a container, every three years if they are on the bottom of the pond. Re-pot into fresh, slightly clay soil with either pulverised cow manure or a slow-release fertiliser added. Binding the fertiliser into solid clay balls helps to stop it floating away from the roots. Top with a thick layer of sand or clean gravel to stop the water becoming murky.

JOHN MCGRATH – TOP GROWTH REGIONS Once upon a time the cities and regions were two markets. But COVID-19 saw the regional and rural markets catch up to the cities. Now they are moving as one, which I haven’t seen in 40 years in real estate. During the pandemic, the regions saw a huge influx of both downsizers and millennial families seeking a more affordable, laidback lifestyle. The desire to get away from the cities and the ability to work from home led to a pronounced shift in East Coast metropolitan populations over the past two years. According to the latest regional population data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the people movement between capital cities and regional areas within the same state or territory was strongest in NSW. Almost 65,000 people left Sydney for regional NSW in FY21. That’s up 16% on FY19 before the pandemic. The most popular destinations were the Central Coast and Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. About 48,000 people left Melbourne for regional Victoria. That’s up 20% on FY19. The most popular regional destinations were Latrobe-Gippsland and Geelong. About 43,000 people left Brisbane for regional Queensland. That’s up 5% on FY19. The most popular regional destinations were the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. On top of this, loads of southern city dwellers moved to regional Queensland, too. About 13,000 from Sydney and 12,000 from Melbourne. Their No 1 destination was the Gold Coast, followed by the Sunshine Coast. This all led to a surge in demand and a complete re-rating of local home values in many regional areas.

In CoreLogic’s national Regional Market Update for the 12 months to April 2022, all 25 areas canvassed recorded house price gains above 10% and 18 were 20% plus. The top performing regions for house price growth along the Eastern Seaboard. • Hunter Valley (ex-Newcastle) up 34.3% - NSW • Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven up 33.3% - NSW • Gold Coast up 33.1% - Queensland • Central West up 31.5% - NSW • Wide Bay up 30.6% - Queensland • Sunshine Coast up 30.1% Queensland • Launceston and North East up 29.5% Tasmania • Mid North Coast up 28.3% - NSW • Riverina up 27.6% - NSW • Capital Region up 26.9% - NSW Source: CoreLogic

Regional relocations are continuing but at a slower pace. I think the strongest channel of people movement over the next few years will be from the southern cities to Queensland. Queensland represents value for money relative to Sydney and Melbourne. The climate and lifestyle is world class and a lot of people from the southern states will move to Queensland because of this. Let’s take a look at the No. 1 regional growth markets in the three states represented in the top 10. Those states are NSW, Queensland and Tasmania. This will give us a picture of the lifestyle options city dwellers are choosing. And it’s worth noting only one is coastal. NSW • No. 1 regional hot spot: Hunter Valley (ex-Newcastle) • The stats: Median house price up 34.3% • Why? The Hunter Valley is among

FOr LEasE

the most beautiful wine country in Australia. It’s a very popular treechange destination and offers a gourmet food and wine scene. The Hunter Expressway and NorthConnex have made travelling to Sydney easier and faster. Queensland • No. 1 regional hot spot: Gold Coast • The stats: Median house price up 33.1% • Why? The Gold Coast is a buzzing, exciting hive of activity. It offers every possible recreational pursuit you could ask for, including theme parks, plenty of fantastic dining and nightlife, and vast world-famous beaches. It’s also got a thriving economy. There are many beachside suburbs all at varying price points, which makes a great coastal lifestyle affordable and accessible to a larger demographic of home owners. Tasmania • No. 1 regional hot spot: Launceston and North East • The stats: Median house price up 29.5%

McGrath CEO & Founder John McGrath

• Why? We have seen that safe lifestyle destinations have become paramount in our choice of where and how we want to live, and Tasmania will continue to be in the world spotlight as a cultural and desirable lifestyle option for many seeking to relocate. Launceston is the second biggest city after Hobart. It’s popular with mainland city relocators because it offers lifestyle, affordability and has its own airport with direct flights to major cities. Significant capital investments including the City Heart project and Hydrogen Hub are growing the city.

A normally placid Venus is set to spark some fiery debates this week. Little can be left to chance, with cashflow being the most contentious issue. You’ll have to think on your feet as each new financial twist unfolds. Love isn’t about to lay its cards on the table either. Look out for suspicious behaviour. Someone’s got a secret.

This week you may feel drawn to esoteric subjects. Join a group or find a person who could introduce you to a new philosophy or spiritual outlook. You’re also guided by your dreams and intuition. If and when you truly need help over the next few weeks, it’s likely to arrive in the form of friends or, perhaps even angelic sources.

The week begins with an adrenaline surge. Passions run strong as an opinionated cosmos provokes power struggles or stress. It’s important, though, that you find a way to express what’s bothering you. Nothing good comes from suppressing hidden feelings. After the 28th, Venus prompts intriguing invitations. Some Librans strike it lucky in love.

Make the most of this week’s vibrant mood by stirring up your social life. Put together an invitation list and call your closest and dearest. You may blow the budget, but memories have a wonderful way of outlasting a depleted cashflow. Generosity becomes a two-way street, as others reciprocate your love and support.

It’s a whirlwind week, Sagittarius. Stay focused; and confirm dates or appointments ahead of time. Your mind is firing as you cope with droves of details. Downside: communications with others could become gridlocked. Keep your mind objective and positive. This is no time for acting halfheartedly. Inspiration’s out; perspiration’s in.

It’s a week to follow your heart. Some might go for more fleeting pleasures, but most favour the option of a rock-solid life mate. Even on a platonic note, you may meet fascinating new friends. You can also take a calm look at how you handle partnerships. Dust away emotional cobwebs, and talk problems through.

This week marks a prime point in your life. For some, this means welcoming an estranged soul back into the fold. The downside: if someone’s behaving badly, jealousy’s probably to blame. Tensions in the workplace could also increase. If so, patience is essential. Not so in play - where you can feel free to attract whomever you please.

Pisceans are back in “can do” mode. Just as well, as there’s an increasing number of projects to deal with. And should the cosmos offer a financial pick-me-up, accept graciously. Think of it as a reward for good deeds done. And when feeling this flush, it’s easy to spoil yourself. Go ahead. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth over-doing.

This week the cosmos ushers in a growing level of self-confidence. What you gain is the courage of your convictions. Relationships also hit a high note, especially new friendships. If love makes an entrance, it may be via work or business. Platonic bonds could also be in for a surprise shift of status delightfully so.

You have some pretty high expectations at the moment, and not all of them can be met. If this becomes frustrating, don’t resort to anger. Likewise, any advice given to you should not be seen as criticism. Take it easy on everyone, including yourself. Crush the wrong set of toes, and offended dance partners may decide to call a separate tune.

When you feel torn between two worlds, certain aspects of your life can lose out to other concerns. But neglected interests will eventually stir dissent. Thankfully, this week swerves your commitment towards long-term relationships. Realign priorities, Gemini - and then find some loving company and relax.

Just when you want to grab pieces of your past and put them through the shredder, a happier Jupiter helps you keep things together. Spare yourself the anxiety of old wrongs. We all make mistakes. A more outgoing Mars brings you into contact with people who weren’t around when the mess initially hit the fan. So why not start over?

It’s one of those times when you feel like disconnecting your devices and bolting your front door. But your reclusive behaviour shouldn’t be mistaken for the blues. It’s more a case of needing some time out for contemplation. With luck, everyone will respect that. By week’s end a re-energised cosmos pushes on, and so do you.

You can expect too much from relationships, and when your romantic requirements are seemingly short changed, disappointment may follow. Ask yourself: have I been too demanding, or withdrawn? Sometimes, we erect walls to protect ourselves, but in the process - shut others out. This is the week to demolish some of those barriers.

If trouble flares, act with diplomacy. The trick lies in distancing yourself from this week’s emotional inferno, rather than getting caught up in it. As soon as Librans buy into any over-hyped drama, you lose your natural objectivity. Without it, you could make some ill-considered decisions, and this isn’t the time for that. Don’t overreact.

When reality doesn’t fit in with your expectations, you might feel tempted to blame others. One thing’s for sure, we all see things in different ways - and few of us have the power to read each other’s minds. Spell your thoughts out more clearly next time and, if necessary, compromise. Forgive, too.

The cosmos advises against compromise this week, for good reason. Being pushed into not-so-satisfactory situations or having to take the blame because of someone else’s mistakes is not acceptable. The cosmos helps those who help themselves, so stand your ground and make your thoughts heard.

It’s strange how things can improve once you decide to surrender your worries to the universe. This next week should bring progress on a matter that’s been causing you worry or discomfort. Ironically, this comes at a time when the issue in question hardly seems to matter anymore. Or so you thought.

Just when you need help, along comes a planetary ally or two. Not a moment too soon. Once you realise that not everyone’s out to get you, it’s onwards and upwards. There are, however, some conditions. Bury the past and start concentrating on life as you’d like it. Except perhaps, financially. For now, throw hard-earned cash into a locked vault.

If you’ve suffered minor setbacks, don’t fret. Pursue what’s working and leave the rest behind. This week encourages a change of image - not because you’re looking jaded, but because you’re ready to tackle this crazy world on new terms: your own. And if you can squeeze in enough time for a spendup, all the better.

You might want to put some space between yourself and a barrage of conflicting opinions. Be smarter in your decision-making, especially when it comes to business or purchases. To maintain stability at work and home, be patient and stay receptive to alternative viewpoints: honest discussion beats hostility any time.

Everyone seems to be discussing the kind of worries you overcame years ago. They want to explore every wrong turn, every mistake - in great detail. Thankfully you’ve recognised the early warning signs, and made a break for it. Sometimes others just need to figure it out themselves. You don’t need the angst.

It’s possible to be loyal to longheld allegiances, and yet still maintain your independence. Many find this hard to comprehend, but Geminis are a law unto themselves. So if this week offers something more than the norm, you’ll be the first to give it a go. You were born to explore, to examine, to question.

If given a second chance at ventures that previously didn’t go so well, figure out who’s best at what, and drum up a solid sense of teamwork - even if it has to be networking via the internet. Should love or money come your way, accept with gratitude. In the same spirit, give openly. Best news: perhaps, a gentle stroll down memory lane.

Contributed by Helen Uhlmann WE have had an interesting couple of weeks, with many results from various competitions coming through. Firstly, the results from the Association Croquet Pennants competitions have been finalised and we’re proud to announce that our Bray team came second and Lochwood team came in third. As a small club, this is a tremendous effort. Many thanks to the team captains for their hard work and to the coaches for getting us ready to play. With croquet, there’s always more to learn and strategies to think through in a new way! Our club championships have finished and results finalised. The Division 2 Association Croquet Champion this year is Donna Manning, with Sarah Widin being the runner-up. The attached photo shows Donna being presented with the Division 2 shield by our club president Sarah, watched on (from left to right) by Ken Barker, Nick Cram, Vince Carbery and Val Carbery. Everyone gave their best and enjoyed the friendly and lively competition. The Division 3 Association Croquet competition was won by Dianne Horsman, with Lynette Evans the runner up. The match between Dianne and Lynette was a very exciting, close one with Dianne narrowly winning by just one hoop. This started a trend with the Division 4 championship finishing in a similar manner with a close run competition between Wallace Roy and Helen Uhlmann. Wallace managed to sneak ahead towards the end to win by one hoop after very even play. A hearty congratulations to both Dianne and Wallace on their achievements. The combination of the busyness of our championship play and the unfriendly weather has taken its toll on our usual play and coaching days. After several days of rain we have welcomed the return of the sun, thankfully defying the Bureau of Meteorology which had bleakly forecast steady rain during this past week. Despite this, with the rest of Maleny, we have shivered with the blustery, cold weather and for

Donna Manning receives the Division 2 Championship Shield from Sarah Widin, watched on by other participants. some players, participation has been hampered by this. For our Thursday afternoon session on the 7th of July, four brave souls turned up to play and took part in singles matches. Sally Adams played against Kath Smith while Helen Andrews played Lynette Evans. They were friendly, relaxed games and scores were not recorded. It’s great to have the opportunity to play informally in this way, trying out variations in strategy and practicing skills. Sunday afternoon the 10th was also a cold one and six intrepid players arrived ready to play. In a singles game, Nick Cram successfully took on Vince Carbery to win 17-11. At the same time, a doubles match took place in which Donna Manning and Lynette Evans challenged Val Carbery and Helen Andrews, coming up victorious with 11 hoops to Val and Helen’s 5. We’ll see what turn the weather takes in the coming weeks and keep our fingers crossed that things warm up a bit! Play days are Thursday and Sunday 1pm for 1:30pm start. Beerwah Bulldog signs with Titans NRLW player Annette Brander has been signed with the Gold Coast Titans, following a break due to injury, making it her second NRLW team since Beerwah. The forward said she had a mix of emotions after missing the 2021 season, which would have been played with her former team the Brisbane Broncos. “I’ve got mixed emotions, I’m super excited to have the opportunity and to be able to work with someone like Karyn Murphy who I’ve known for a while now,” she said. “But I’m also a bit nervous, I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve been in that system even though I only missed one season, so I am a little nervous as well to see what to expect.” Annette played for the Beerwah Bulldogs for five years and that’s where she realised there were professional pathways possible to pursue. “I didn’t take it as seriously then because I didn’t really think that representative footy was anything I wanted to do, I was more doing it for the fun of it and all the friends you make along the way,” she said. “It was through Beerwah that I realised the potential that I had to go a bit further and it was in 2014 when playing for Beerwah that I got selected in the all-stars team and Queensland and Australia. “So, it definitely helped me get to that level and stay there for the years that I was with Beerwah.”

The new Titans player said she hoped to lead by example for the fledgling team in only its second season. “I think it’s really exciting to be a part of something that is fresh and to be able to help build a really good team culture environment and help be a part of something in its early stages,” she said. “It’s exciting to come in off what they have already done and the success they have already had.” And as for the future of women in the game, Annette hopes that more young girls will consider playing rugby league, especially now with all the professional pathways emerging. “There’s definitely more opportunities now and that’s awesome for them to be able to look up and instead of saying I want to be like Jonathon Thurston they can say I want to be like Ali Brigginshaw,” she said.

Mixed results for Women’s Bulldogs THE momentum of a last-gasp victory against Gympie on July 10 failed to carry over for the Beerwah Bulldogs Women’s team who were soundly thrashed by a well-drilled Caboolture Snakes side the following week. Coach Rod Kerr said the mixed fortnight showed the team had plenty of work to do, but he was satisfied to have welcomed back a host of players from illness and injury. “The win against the Devils was very tense, we were leading 16-6 and then they got up to 24-16 and then we managed to score two tries and the last one was right on full time,” he said. Kerr said he had hoped that the momentum of the comeback win would continue as his fourth-placed squad came up against the third-placed Snakes. But the writing was on the wall just minutes into the game with the Snakes controlling the tempo and running in three first half tries.

“I thought that (momentum) would have transferred into this game, but you know they had a much higher tempo,” he said. “Their tempo was really intense in that first 15 minutes and I think we just sat back a bit and let it get away from us.” The final scoreline was 40-6. Despite the loss, Kerr was happy to have welcomed back a number of players. “We have had so many injuries, and to have a full side is a really big thing…but again, they [Caboolture] are a bloody organised side, they ran hard, and we just got to get back into it,” he said. Beerwah’s first and only try for the game came in the first half before a complete shut-out in the second 40 minutes as the Snakes ran in four more tries. Over the last two weeks, the Beerwah Bulldogs Men’s A grade side smashed the Gympie Devils 46-4 and won 26-4 against the Caboolture Snakes.

Softball clubs across the country fighting Social Netball rolls back for Winter to Spring season to bring under 14s nationals back LOCAL softball clubs are urging Softball Australia to reverse a controversial decision to cancel the annual Under 14s National Championships. The decision has upset clubs around the country including Suncoast Hinterland Softball Club, which said it backed keeping the Under 14s national competition alive. “We have members who are passionate about grassroot softball and giving every player every opportunity, we can to follow their dreams and goals they set for themselves,” the club said. GC&M News spoke to Queensland softball clubs representative, Jayke Reynolds, who asked questions at a recent online Q&A with Softball Australia. Reynolds said the cancellation was sudden and it remained unclear why Softball Australia scrapped the competition. “They have said they have applied research to suggest it’s not needed but none of us have seen this research yet, there is really no reasoning 44

around it,” he said. “It’s a big deal for these kids to play for their state, but softball Australia has swept that out from under them.” The decision by Softball Australia is unlikely to change for this year according to Reynolds, who added that it puts the entire sport in jeopardy as the Under 14s age bracket is critical heading into senior development. “A lot of kids at the age of 12 and 13… they are choosing softball and another sport, and if the other sport has a national program and ours doesn’t, they will pick the other sport,” he said. “We will lose these kids when they make that choice to go play another sport because of a lack of representative competitions in softball.” Jayke added this decision is not only disappointing for the kids, but is also disappointing for all the volunteers involved, including coaches, managers and umpires. Despite unrest at the move, Softball Australia is continuing to stand firm on its decision.

THE Tibro’s social ladies July to November competition starts on July 19, with organisers saying there are still openings for interested players. Tibro’s social competition organiser Megan Scholes said the quality of netball is high for a social competition and loves to see everyone getting along. “I just really enjoy when you are down there on a Tuesday night, and you hear people laughing, and you see people having a good time,” she said. “The other thing I like is seeing players who have been around for many years, helping those who are newer and even if you aren’t on the same team.” Registrations among established teams has increased. “I will either look to link them in with their current team or what we’ve done in the past is link new ladies together to make a new team,” she said. And Megan insists this competition is for everyone even if you haven’t played in a long time, it is worth giving it a go if you’ve got the spare time.

“There are ladies now who have become good friends who have met each other through netball and then offer each other support in their lives,” she said. “It’s great that people are out and moving as well but it’s the connection to other women that I think stands out. “That’s something that I really like about our local comp.” If you are interested in joining or starting a team, please contact Megan by call or text on 0412 115 421.

Bowling towards Olympic prospects IT might have the stigma of a game for the oldies, but try telling that to the 40 bowlers who recently competed at the Under 18s Bowls Triples Carnival at Glass House Mountains Bowls Club. Junior Bowls Co-ordinator Bill Tumbridge said it was important to give young bowls players pathways at the beginning of their careers, despite what people may think about the sport. “Everyone thinks it’s an old person’s sport, oldies can still play it, we can’t play the footy and the sports we used to, but the younger generation is so far ahead in getting involved. “A part of our role is to grow the sport for the younger generation, Bowls Australia is desperately pushing, and they are very confident they will get it as an Olympic sport in 2032. “So where does that place these kids? Right in Olympic prospects, so that’s a big long-term goal.” Some of the players on the day were as young as seven years old and were

from bowls clubs across the Sunshine Coast District. This leaves those younger up and coming players with plenty of practice and growth by the time the Brisbane Olympics takes place in 10 years’ time, assuming it is confirmed an Olympic sport. Jabir, Alex Oster and Josh Williamson won Section 4. Ehan Khan, Ben Harrison, and Sam Collier won Section 3. In section 2 the winners were Cooper Sutton, Brodie Carter and Todd Brain, and in section 1 were Lucas Evans, Hayden Leslie, and Hayden Oster. Later in the year, junior players from the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club will have a chance to compete against New South Wales, and if picked again, will play nationally against all the state teams. Tumbridge said Bowls Australia is pushing to expand the sport to encourage more youth involvement, adding it was a sport for all ages and physical abilities.

Glasshouse to host state touch comp THE Glasshouse District Touch Association is set to host 1,000 school kids as part of the Queensland All Schools Championship in late July. Association president Rob Young said the club was feverishly planning for the high school students who will utilise every one of the club’s 16 fields. “We are hoping more people come forward and volunteer to help out even for an hour, because we will need all hands on deck throughout the day,” he said. The Championships will be on all day at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Sunday, July 31. The big event comes as the 2022 winter social touch season continues with the undefeated ‘Those Guys’ maintaining their three-year unbeaten run. A wet start to the season, with the fields flooded for weeks, forced the season into a temporary holding pattern. But Rob said the competition was now going full steam ahead. He said this season has been the most competitive and collaborative he’s ever seen in the time he has been involved with the club. Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

“New teams over the last few years have started to learn the game and grow as players, and they are becoming more competitive because they are more skilful which is fantastic,” he said. “Referees were probably our biggest issue and getting people involved to do that, this year we’ve had more people putting their hand up to referee than any other. “At the start of the season this was my biggest worry because without referees you don’t have a competition.” The team ‘Those Guys’ - formerly known as ‘Get Stumped’ - haven’t lost a game in three seasons. Young said they play fairly, particularly against not as experienced teams, to keep it fun. “They are obviously a highly competitive team… but they know why everyone is there. We are there to play touch, but we are there to have fun and to be social,” he said. “We want to make the competition as welcoming as possible, and if the players themselves are doing that, that is beyond our control… every team is like that and I’m really grateful for that.”

Jett set for big things after Australian Titles experience PROMISING 12-YEAR-old junior boxer Jett Clifford has had his first taste of national-level boxing and his coach couldn’t be prouder. Jett won a silver medal at the Australian titles on July 8, and although he didn’t come away with the top prize, his coach said it was close and entertaining, with Jett showing plenty of spirit. “Bitter pill to swallow but Jett showed he belongs at that level in this fight,” Steve posted on Facebook. “I couldn’t be prouder of this silent little achiever who has been with me since he was 6 years of age when he started in the Pee Wee Program.” Jett was playing football before joining Hinterland Boxing’s Pee Wee Program. He fought and won a state title at 28kg last year and went up to 34kg for the Australian titles. Steve said the experience from fighting at such a high level placed him in a great position for the future, but it was Jett’s own attitude that could take him further.

“He’s the most dedicated amateur I’ve got in the gym,” he said. “He’s a quiet kid and boxing has brought out a good little personality in him and has made him more competitive and more confidence within himself and has given him that more competitive edge. “I think that’s something that is the biggest skill set that boxing provides these kids, and he’s a classic example of that.”

NAIDOC Round Games Mixed for Beegees THE Beegee’s premier women’s team have come up victorious during the NAIDOC week round against the Nambour Yandina United with a 3-2 win. Assistant Coach Amy Higgins, who has been head coach for the last month, said after a difficult season due to sickness interruptions, it was an extra special win for the girls. “We’ve got a couple of Indigenous girls in our team so they were all pretty pumped to be part of the day and it was

a good day, so I think everyone’s spirits were pretty high,” she said. “We just came away the better team at the end of the day.” Although the score was closer than they would have liked, Higgins said she was still happy with the team’s performance. “It was 3-2 so it was a bit back and forth, we were able to play some good quality football, put a few combinations together, and just snap a couple more in then they did,” she said. Unfortunately for the premier men’s team, they lost the Chris Carter Cup 1-5 against the Nambour-Yandina side during NAIDOC round.

The only problem with reunions...

A man takes it easy, lying on the grass and looking up at the clouds. As he identifies the different shapes, he begins to talk with God. “God,” he asks, “how long is a million years?” God answers, “In my frame of reference, it’s about a minute.” The man asks, “God, how much is a million dollars?” God answers, “To me, it’s a penny.” The man thinks about this for a brief period, and then asks, “God, can I have a penny?” God answers, “In a minute.”
