Hi Everyone

M

ost of you will know that my year got off to what could be described as a very wonky start! After taking a fall on the morning of January 2 and ending up with broken ankle, I spent the next five days wearing a stylish plaster cast on my right leg, followed by another six or so weeks in a very stylish moon boot. I have to say those 42 days did seem like possibly the longest days of my life, but I realise now that they may have also been challenging for Brownie who took on the role of ‘best carer in the whole world’ and the GCNews team who all picked up extra tasks to cover the time I was working from home.

WOODFORD

While the leg isn’t 100% yet, things have vastly improved and I am getting out and about – just using one crutch for walking outdoors – I think the feeling is probably like someone being released from ‘home detention’. And for everyone who has broken a leg in the past who know how important physio is – I will be taking your advice and doing my exercises! Thanks to everyone for all their concern and support this year – I have really appreciated it and am looking forward to getting back out in the community and making the most of the great outdoors, (well this Saturday that would be the Beerwah CWA markets and the book sale at the car-park at the Beerwah RSL).

Book stall - The Beerwah RSL Ladies Auxillary will hold a book sale from 8.00am -12.00noon. Nothing over $2.00, fill a bag for $5.00. It will be held in the car park of the Beerwah RSL.

Member for Fisher Mal Brough presented Beerwah State High School student Hunter Lawrence with a Local Sporting Champions Award. Hunter received the award and a $500.00 grant to attend the KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championships. The Local Sporting Champions program is an Australian Government initiative which provides funding assistance to young sportsmen and women who are participating in a state or national sporting competition. “It’s great to be able to help aspiring individuals like Hunter participate in a major national competition,” Mr Brough said. “I hope this award and grant helps Hunter to achieve his goals and reach his motocross potential.” In 2013 Hunter was selected to represent Australia for his 3rd time at the FIM world junior motocross championship. The 2013 world titles were in the Czech Republic, where he raced in the 85cc 11- 14 year class and he missed out on being world champ by one point. He had a stock motor so the starts weren't the best, he was about mid pack out of a 40 rider final but worked his way through to 4th on the first moto, then came through the field to win the final moto giving him 2nd overall. Hunter has done well at previous events but lady luck wasn't on his side his first year on a 65cc bike. He got fifth overall with a 3rd in second

Member for Fisher Mal Brough presents Hunter with his award moto but was caught up in a crash on the first race. In 2012 he broke his growth plate in his shoulder in a practice crash and still rode, but only managed a 13th overall as a 12-year-old in the 85 cc 11- 14 year class, so he was happy that everything went his way for once in 2013. Not only is Hunter hoping to go again this year, but Jett, Hunter's younger brother, is in the hot seat to be going to Belgium for the 2014. He too is a multiple Australian champ and will be the youngest rider ever selected from Australia.

Long / Bullen family reunion On March 22 Beerburrum hall will host the Long / Bullen family reunion for relatives of Sidney Joseph Long and Gertrude Muriel Long (nee Bullen) who were long term residents of Beerburrum. As a number of relatives still live within the area, and with relatives coming from Adelaide and Sydney, the reunion should have a strong turnout. Deciding to hold the reunion at the Beerburrum Hall, the family wanted ‘to go back to where it all began’ as the hall holds many fond memories for those who grew up in the area and remember numerous dances and get togethers held at the venue. Sidney Long was also the local postmaster for 24 years until his passing in 1958. Then the title of postmaster was passed on to his youngest son Redmond, who managed the Beerburrum Post Office from a house located across the road, for a number of the following years. Sidney Long grew up in the Albury / Wodonga area of NSW but was in Longreach when he enlisted in WW1. He was in the 25th Battalion and saw action on the western front near the town of Pozieres. During the war he lost part of his right arm. Sidney returned to Australia and in 1918 married Gertrude Bullen in Brisbane. Moving back to the Albury area, three of their four sons were born (John, Bob and Ken). During the late 1920’s the family moved back to Clifton Hill (now known as Annerley) where Sid had a fruit shop. During 1926-27, they relocated their young

family to a house on 17 acres at Lindsay Road in Buderim. Farming was a challenge with one arm, so in 1932 the family arrived in Beerburrum to work at the state stores. Upon the stores closure in 1933, Sidney took up the offer of a soldier settlement and obtained a farm that ran along Beerburrum creek to the township. At this time, their fourth son Redmond was born. The local postmistress Mrs Weeks retired in 1934 and so Sidney took the opportunity to take over the running of the local Post Office. The family lived at Anzac Avenue with the post office operating from the side of the family home. Following WW2, with all the sons having returned safely, Sid and Gertrude’s son Bob farmed the land running poultry and growing pineapples, while son Ken, took up land on the southern side of Beerburrum Creek. Gertrude’s brother, Bob Bullen had a pineapple farm on the eastern side of the railway line heading towards Caboolture. Sid and his sons were active long-time members in the local Glasshouse Returned Services Club, making lifelong friends in the district. Gertrude was very involved in the local ladies auxiliary of the hospital at Beerburrum before it moved to Maleny. For more information about the reunion contact Phil Long on 07 4630 3231.

Motorsports park plans push ahead Soon after being asked questions in Parliament by opposition environment spokesperson Jackie Trad, Steve Dickson, Minister for National Parks and Member of Buderim last week announced the government had decided to push through with a motorsports park development of over 534 hectares of State Forest off Steve Irwin Way at Glenview. An Expression of Interest (EOI) stage has been called for interested organisations to develop and operate the commercial off-road motorcycling facility. Once they have been assessed, short-listed organisations will be asked to submit their more detailed plans. Part of the site will be dedicated to be used by the Suncoast Junior Motorcycle Club, with the remainder of the State Forest being developed for motocross, enduro, recreational trail riding, supercross, dirt track, observed trials, mini-khana and freestyle. The EOI also states that the government will give consideration to plans for the provision of quad bike friendly tracks and trails and provision of facilities for any other compatible sport and recreation activities.

These ‘other activities’ could possibly include four-wheel-driving and other motorcar sports, such as stock car racing. Although Minister Dickson describes the area in question as being a “degraded former logging area”, the Sunshine Coast Environment Council sees something different. “Contrary to claims by Minister Dickson, the area known as the Mooloolah Logging Area within the Beerwah State Forest contains high environmental values which are vital for the region’s biodiversity and amenity,” explained Sunshine Coast Environment Council spokesperson Narelle McCarthy. “The question is not whether we need this facility – we totally agree that a motor sports park is a great idea. Our issue is that a publicly owned environmental park containing significant threatened species and ecosystems isn’t where this should go, and there would be many other more suitable locations within the region which would meet everyone’s requirements. “This is a case of a good idea in the wrong place,” she emphasised. Has a decision already been made? GCNews has accessed a series of maps (an extract of one is shown here) the government possessed before the announcement was made by Minister Dickson, already showing a circuit and track layout for the ‘proposed’ motorsports park just past The Big Kart Track. See our website under ‘Hot Off The Press’ for the full maps.

From the State Members

From Andrew Powell, Member for Glass House Mountains This is a sensible approach. By allowing enthusiasts access to the existing tracks in this precinct we are taking illegal riders out of our national parks and state forests, something my constituents have been calling on for years. This is a case of balance. On the one hand removing environmental harm to our most precious protected areas, while allowing Queenslanders the responsible use of other special areas. From Mark McArdle, Member for Caloundra The park would be a major injection for the local economy. Steve Irwin Way is going to become an even bigger iconic tourism strip for the Sunshine Coast, attracting even more visitors. You have the Glasshouse Mountains, Australia Zoo, Aussie World nearby, the hinterland towns, Ewen Maddock Dam and soon this recreational rider park. This could greatly enhance the tourism industry as part of our local economy, creating more jobs. From Peter Wellington, Member for Nicklin For some years there has been significant calls across the region for locating ‘noisy sport’ activities. The Government have announced a decision that they will do it their way and so now the devil will be in the detail. I’ll await the release of the finer details as they emerge to see what we’re actually looking at. In the end, I’ll be working to get the best outcome for a growing region, which will most likely require some levels of compromise.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Quentin Rawlins from JPM Machinery for donating the mower to the club to help raise much needed funds for ongoing club costs. Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains

Phone 5493 0055 www.gcnews.com.au

Jill Chamberlain, OAM President, Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland – Sunshine Coast and Hinterland The Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland – Sunshine Coast and Hinterland is extremely concerned over the proposal by the Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, the Hon Steve Dickson, to establish a 534ha motocross and BMX park in the Beerwah State Forest. While recognising the need to cater for such an activity as part of recreational opportunities in the region, and acknowledging that areas of the forest were formerly logged, we don’t believe that this area is appropriate for such a facility. Other more open, already degraded sites can surely be found to accommodate these recreational activities, rather than destroying natural, rejuvenating vegetation destined for conservation with National Park status, under the Regional Forests Agreement. The Beerwah State Forest was included in this Agreement’s discussions, which brought together stakeholders from a wide range of recreational interests, with the final consensus being that State Forests should be gradually assimilated into varying National Parks categories, in order to preserve their critical conservation values. Since the cessation of logging, the Beerwah State Forest has become a contributor to the biodiversity of the Sunshine Coast and home to many endangered species of fauna and flora, including the koala, (Federally listed as vulnerable in SE Queensland). We wonder if the Minister has consulted with SEQ Water on the possible impact of such recreational activities on the Ewen Maddock Dam’s water quality? The Minister appears to have ignored the extensive consultations acknowledging this area’s conservation values, by saying he has a plan, or plans, for the sports park, which will be released in ‘a measured time and a measured way, when the time is right, openly and transparently’. It appears to us that, with the plans apparently in place, and community consultation not due until May, that decisions for the motocross park have already been reached, regardless of any community input, or the natural values of the area.

Cassidy Holland President, Suncoast Junior Motorcycle Club Over the past 15 years the Suncoast Junior Motorcycle Club, through its affiliation with the State Controlling Body (Motorcycling Queensland), have supported annually in excess of 700 competition and recreational licenced riders encompassing all age groups. Unfortunately, due to combined pressures from local councils, state governments and future commercial and urban initiatives, the Club’s current lease for the popular Coolum site is set to expire in January 2016. Pending the EOI outcomes for this new initiative, written into the resulting Suncoast Junior Motorcycle Club’s tender will be the facilitation of a motocross track for the club to transition to. For our riding community and members this has been particularly welcome news and provides the catalyst to commence plans for a new future. Continued growth in the SEQ region has resulted in inevitable restrictions on legal and environmentally sensitive areas which are available to the vast riding community. There are now only a handful of motocross clubs and motoparks that families can ride in / race legally. The current Government’s foresight in announcing this new venture is an exciting and a fantastic step forward for the SEQ riding community. Undoubtedly, it will provide the Sunshine Coast region with a sustainable, family and community friendly venue, supporting future growth of the sport with latent economic benefits to local businesses. Motocross is an exciting and family orientated sport with each event having substantial support from numerous followers, be it friends, fans or the curious. The Suncoast Junior Motorcycle Club is acutely aware that our riders and families are also invested members of the local communities whereby we really like to see local business and community yield the benefits from our activities and welcome their involvement. Geographically, the central location of the new site is set to attract a greater breadth of riders from across the South East Qld region from locations such as Brisbane, Gold Coast and the Darling Downs. Importantly, it will provide a designated and professionally designed venue that is legal, supervised and safe for all level of riders and significantly contribute toward the effort of ruling out illegal riding activities. A win-win for all.

Comments from the community

Terri Irwin Owner, Australia Zoo I am excited about the initiative for an outdoor recreational facility. This is exactly what our community needs and will give riders and their families the opportunity to have an area designated for their sport. Now more than ever we need infrastructure to encourage our kids to get outdoors and have fun! Paul Donatiu Executive Coordinator, National Parks Association of Queensland NPAQ strongly supports removal of trail bikes and 4WDs from National Parks. For us the problem is that most of these illegal riders (many local teenagers) would not be prepared to pay the fees that would be charged, especially if these fees were in the order of $50.00 - $100.00 a day. Policing of illegal trail bike use in National Parks will require extra funding, so will Minister Dickson make resources available for this? Also, the area is home to 17 threatened plants and animals. NPAQ would want to know which of these are found in the area proposed for this facility, and how they will be protected.

Councillor Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council A well-designed motocross facility will be safer for riders than illegal trails, provide better access to first aid and emergency services, and provide the right range of experiences for riders from beginner to professional level. I’m sure many will also agree that we need to combat illegal riding in our state forests. A dedicated motocross facility will contribute towards managing the issue, but only if it is built to the right scale and high standard. We clearly have a lack of safe and legal places for people to ride and I have always held the position that the best way to combat illegal riding is to establish a well designed legal facility in the right location, combined with stronger enforcement of current laws. The question is whether this is the right site to have the required range of motocross courses and be affordable enough to be an attractive alternative to the state and national parks. Motocross and Enduro riders from peewee level to intermediate and freestyling each have varying degrees of experience and the new facility will need to provide tracks, trails, jumps and obstacles that are professionally designed, safe and built to competition standard to meet the needs of all riders. This is what the expression of interest process should reveal. Another concern is that it shouldn't reduce the potential for other tourism proposals along the Steve Irwin way. As we all know, the Steve Irwin Way has huge importance and potential as a tourism corridor for the Sunshine Coast, and any decisions on the future of this land needs to be taken with great care. The level of noise and impact on the environment are obvious considerations and ones that could impact on adjoining properties and the visitor experience. Council is seeking more information from the Minister on local amenity, noise and environmental impacts and I will be following this up with our State counterparts. In the meantime, if you have immediate concerns about the proposal I encourage you to get in contact with your State representative.

Ferre De Deyne Owner, The Big Kart Track It’s definitely a positive announcement made by Minister Steve Dickson. I welcome anyone and everyone who has something to offer to enhance tourism on the Sunshine Coast. Under one condition – that they must be done with the utmost professionalism and they must give excellent customer service, otherwise it will be a negative reflection on the rest of our wonderful tourism attractions. Bob McLean President, Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce The photos of this site now, after logging, highlight a lesser challenge to remediate this site, when compared with the extent of the illegal environmental destruction inflicted to the National Parks and Forestry by off roaders. The proposed management partnership is exciting. New jobs and business opportunities will be created. It’s a winner; it’s managing problems in a new innovative way. I can only see positive outcomes for the community and the environment.

and information packed, and suitable for pregnant women from 18 weeks onwards,” says Kathy. “Dads or the mother’s support person are encouraged to come along too, as they have a vital role to play in the sometimes tricky early days at home with a new baby.” The class will be held at Mountain Creek and will run from 10.00am – 2.00pm, including a light lunch. For more information please contact Liz at breastfeedingsunshinecoast@gmail.com, phone 5494 1417 or visit the group’s Facebook page: Australian Breastfeeding Association Sunshine Coast group.

Beerwah Catholic Ladies Auxiliary

Contributed by Pam Lever We have a new president elected at the recent AGM, Sharon Hyde. She will now lead the auxiliary in fellowship and fundraising, especially for St Vincent de Paul, Beerwah High School Chaplaincy, and Rosie's Street Mission. Recently a

cheque was presented to the Chaplaincy for $1,000.00 from the auxiliary. This amount was the proceeds from the ongoing sale of the soup recipe book, ‘The Soup Kitchen’, compiled by the auxiliary. Copies are still available from the Beerwah Newsagency, price $10.00.

Caloundra Family History Research

Contributed by Roz Kuss Our new meeting room was full to overflowing when the first guest speaker, historian and family researcher Sue Reid, did her February presentation. The immediate past president of QFHS, Sue took her audience through ‘On-Line Newspapers: Search Strategies for the Big Four’. Many valuable search tips were shown and explained, and Sue left comprehensive notes of her talk for the members and visitors in attendance. The spacious research facility and library is open every Thursday and Saturday, with opening times, and a map, on the group’s website at www.caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au. Entry is from Gate 2 in Pierce Avenue, and there is plenty of parking right beside the facility, which has wheelchair access. Enquiries are welcomed by contacting June on 5493 2679, Roz on 5493 1197, or Dawn on 5492 2208. The group can also be reached by email at caloundrafamilyres@y7mail.com Guest speaker at the March 20 general meeting will be local Caloundra historian Anne Wensley, with a talk on ‘A Pictorial History of Caloundra ~ Caloundra tells her Story through her Names’. They asked the children where they should stand near the car and discussed how far back they should stand so that the driver could see them. The children were able to speak to central

Contributed by Debbie Ives The Beerwah CWA has seen a dramatic increase in members since 2014, with seven ladies joining up to become members. Cynthia Daniels the CWA Divisional Vice-President officially welcomed four of these new members at their monthly meeting on Monday. The new members were a mix of friends of existing members, but also new residents to Beerwah looking for friendship, and the opportunity to get involved within the local community. Being a CWA member will help you form new friendships, learn new skills, and connect to the local community to name just a few of the benfits. The QCWA has recently been praised for its work through the QCWA Public Rural Crisis Fund, and some of the Beerwah Branch fundraising ventures contribute to this and other chosen local charities.

From clydesdales to shetlands Contributed by Jenny Morris Glasshouse Country View Club On a very overcast Wednesday morning on March 5, a group of 18 ladies headed towards Kilcoy to the Strathgordon Clydesdale and Shetland complex owned by Harry and Marlene Churches. After our morning cuppa and treats we listened to stories told by Harry about these great work horses. The Shetland pony is the smallest draught horse and came from the Shetland Islands north of Scotland. No other horses are allowed on the Shetland Islands. When children weren’t allowed in the mines in England the Shetland ponies were used as they were strong work horses. On the other hand, the Clydesdales are the largest draught horses. These were mainly used for team work and they came from Scotland. There are many types of Clydesdales in the world in different shapes and sizes. Marlene has a great display of memorabilia about these horses and also had some souvenirs available. Harry gave us a working demonstration of Misty his favourite Clydesdale, pulling up logs and loading wagons.

Does your child suffer from ‘growing pains’? Does your child experience pain in the knees, hips or spine? If so, he or she may be suffering from pelvic or spinal Subluxation. Many parents are concerned when their children report pain, and rightfully so! The normal state of the human body is healthy and pain free, especially children. If you are experiencing pain, something is not right. Unfortunately, that concern diminishes as parents are told, “don’t worry, it’s just growing pains.” When we think about it, how silly is that?! Should it hurt to grow? Aren’t we designed to grow – just like anything else that is alive and developing? Should a normal process of life be painful? To a chiropractor, saying that growing pains are normal is as silly as saying painful digestion is normal. It just doesn’t make sense. So, if you are concerned that there is a cause for your child’s ‘growing pains’, you may be right. Spine and pelvic Subluxations place uneven 10

New branch member Sarah says she made an enquiry to join the Beerwah branch of CWA when she and her husband moved into the area. “Not knowing a soul, I saw an article in the Glasshouse Country News with a photo of the small group (I think it was their Christmas do!) and thought that would be a great way to meet other ladies and may be do some good for someone, somewhere, somehow!” she said. “I’m looking forward to learning about CWA and the wonderful things they do and also getting to know the lovely ladies in QCWA Beerwah branch!" The Beerwah Branch is also famous for its quarterly CWA Markets held at its centrally located hall on Simpson Street. A wonderful array of locally produced art and crafts stalls are on display, many of which are made by branch members. It’s also a chance for local women and crafts people to showcase their wares. Hoy is played every fortnight, and once a month the rooms are open for all to come for a coffee and chat, with craft activities available for those who choose. stress on a child’s developing joints. Often times this goes unnoticed to the untrained eye, as subluxation can exist without causing pain. However, if left unchecked this spinal condition can lead to a host of problems down the road. Fortunately, pain is not the only sign of spinal misalignment. Poor posture, uneven shoe wear, headaches and poor coordination are other indications of improper alignment. From a chiropractor’s point of view, the photo here points out other things to look for. So if you are concerned about your child’s spinal health, a great place to start is a thorough evaluation performed by a chiropractor trained in assessing and treating children. The team at Adjust to Life Chiropractic are very passionate about giving children the best possible start to life, and they know a healthy spine and nervous system play an essential role in childhood development. The Queensland Government has ceased the feed in tariff for solar energy. What does this mean?

It means solar is still a VERY GOOD investment for people who are home during the day, and for EVERY PERSON who has a SWIMMING POOL yet they may NOT BE at home during the day.

Why is that? Electricity is expensive and it is getting more expensive every year. Solar is quite inexpensive now, compared to what it has been. Solar only works in the daylight. So people home during the day can use all the electricity they produce, which saves heaps and cuts their bill by maybe a half to three-quarters. People who work through the day but have a swimming pool, or run their dishwasher, or turn the washing machine on, can save NEARLY as much. BUT, there is merit in buying a SMALLER solar system than previously. All electricity bills state how much electricity the house uses – the measurement is in kWhrs. A $4,100 system may produce 12kWhrs of electricity a day, averaged over a year. Let’s say 10kWhrs is used during the day to run the appliances – TV, fan, cooking, washing, dish washing, ironing, airconditioner, water pumps etc. So 2kWhrs is left over – i.e. not used, and it goes out to the grid (exported). Here is the effect on your bill, let’s say it was $480.00 per quarter, before solar.

After Solar: 10 kWhrs used. The value of 10kWhrs on today’s charges is approximately $0.30 per kWhr. The value of exported energy will probably remain the same, less the Government $0.08 per kWhr. Electricity saved = 10kWhr x $0.30 = $3.00 per day Electricity exported = 2kWhr x $0.06 = $0.12 (Origin rate) (AGL rate $0.14, or Click $0.16) Total saved and made per day is $3.12. So, $3.12 x 90 days (quarter) = $280 saved per quarter. At this rate it will only take just over three and a half years for the system to pay itself off. The new bill for power used will drop from $480 (minus $280) to now be $200. A smaller system than this (and so cheaper to buy) is probably all many pensioners will require – each system size is determined by the amount of the electricity bill AND the individual activities of the people living in the house each day.

School News School leaders for Beerburrum

Earlier this term, Beerburrum State School's students and staff had the difficult, yet exciting decision of choosing School Leaders for 2014. With this being the last ‘primary school’ year for our Year 6 and 7 students before moving onto high school it was great to see so many of these students applying for leadership roles. As a result we have school captains - Casey Carman and Vicky Beer and vice captains Kiralee Robertson and Micah McLoughlin. For our sporting teams - Flinders house captains - Cody Ashlin and Izaak Young-Laugesen; Norfolk house captains - Connor Brown and Lilli Evans and Bongaree house captains - Koen Hilton-Nielsen and Caleb Staunton. The school welcomed Mr Andrew Powell MP to our special Leaders Induction Parade. He also helped them celebrate this occasion at a special morning tea for our senior students. Congratulations to all our student leaders. The school community wishes you all the best in your leadership roles at our school.

Pacific students reach out

Poverty, contaminated water, inadequate food, schooling – an unaffordable luxury for most – and one in seven deaths before the age of five. It’s the harsh reality for Cambodian children. Pacific Lutheran College students are hoping to make a difference by gaining an understanding of the issues faced in the third world country, raising awareness among their peers and digging deep. Australian Lutheran World Service Awareness Day saw PLC students from Years 6 to 12 join hands with like minded youths from Immanuel Lutheran College and Good Shepherd College at Immanuel on Thursday. ‘Village Life’ in Cambodia was the annual event’s theme as students gathered for interactive workshops, where they devised ways in which villages could be improved and funds appropriately distributed, listened to guest speakers and sampled Cambodian food. Cambodia Project Coordinator, Karen Schultz said it was important students were aware of the way people lived beyond the Sunshine Coast and the need that is ‘out there.’ “The event also nurtured a compassion for others who don’t have what we do, while tying in with the Lutheran philosophy that we learn and continue to grow by serving without expecting recognition or reward,” she said.

In response to the State Government’s Motor Cross Precinct

We are surprised by Terri Irwin’s support of establishing a Motor Cross Precinct in an important nature corridor. We can only surmise that Terri Irwin might not realise that the proposed site is in an important and fragile native habitat zone. Although we agree that a Motor Cross precinct would be a good thing for the Sunshine Coast economy we don’t agree with the proposed location. Surely the neighbouring pine plantation state forest would be a better location than the 534ha of old growth native forest that is home to 300 year old trees, three endangered species of frogs, old growth birdwing butterfly vine, endangered lowland rainforest and one of the last remaining koala corridors on the Sunshine Coast? We are extremely concerned that the state government is unnecessarily wrecking our environment. Why is this old growth habitat a better alternative to an already partially cleared pine forest next door? The Save the Iconic Forest Group was formed when concerned citizens heard of the proposed road realignment at the top of Steve Irwin Way. The proposed design threatens to devastate the northern end of this iconic forest. This habitat is home to an abundance of wildlife, including many threatened species. Once again there are less destructive and cheaper alternatives. If both of these projects go ahead as planned, the effects will be devastating, taking big chunks out of the northern and western sections of this forest. The frustrating thing is that there are simple, cheaper and less destructive alternatives. We can actually turn this into a win-win situation for the people, the economy and the wildlife of the sunshine coast. We would like to invite Mark McArdle, Steve Dickson and Terri Irwin to meet with Mooloolah River Water Watch and Landcare and the Save the Iconic Forest Group to discuss the environmental impacts of the proposal and find a less destructive solution. The Management Committee of Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare

Simpson Street – Peachester Road corner

As I said in my column last week, the GCCoC receives requests to assist with representation on issues which may or may not be a part of the chambers’ objectives. With a large and growing membership, a diversity of views is available very quickly on many questions. The issue of delays and unsafe drivers at this corner triggered an email to members. The outcome was - there were issues. A request to council for a site meeting to discuss the concerns was not available at short notice. I took the opportunity to visit the site myself and discuss the issues with business operators in the area. The problem is not the turning lane, which has been taken away after eight years, but the synchronising of the traffic signals. The Green turning arrows is the issue, a change to standard operation, rectifying the problem. The other concern is driver impatience, please be a little more considerate while the work at both ends of Simpson Street is happening. The outcome will be worth the wait. Re: Ewen Maddock Dam

Might I ask did you attend the two meetings hosted by SEQ water in the later part of 2013? If you had, a lot of your questions would have been addressed. I will admit I know nothing of the rules re: walking tracks and pathways, but I do know these are constantly abused. It seems that you are not up with SEQ water as the information we have is that they are a private identity. I can also tell you there was no levy on anybody for the purchase of the early land reclaimed by the then Caloundra City Council as a large portion of the land was owned by my mother-in-law. As SEQ water do not have money for recreation areas, I think they do a pretty good job, and I still think it is a privilege to be allowed access, as they can close it off at any time. K. Johnson, Mooloolah

Uplifting and inspiring

All who attended this year’s World of Prayer service held at the Glass House Country Church Beerwah, found it a most uplifting and inspiring service. The service was compiled by the Egyptian committee of World Day of Prayer and the theme was ‘Streams in the desert’. The Rev Richard Coombs, director of MECO Australia, delivered an informative address which gave all an insight into the Christian situation in Egypt. A most generous offering of $892.45 was collected and has been forwarded to the W D of P committee of QLD for distribution. Around 90 people from various local churches attended and after the service all enjoyed fellowship over a cuppa and most delicious morning tea. Eunice Prickett – Glasshouse Country Co-Ordinator, World Day of Prayer

Thanks to those that care

Once again, a huge thank you to the volunteers that helped with ‘Clean Up Australia’, not just to our Beerwah site but also to all other sites who had volunteers picking up rubbish, it’s a pleasure to join a group that has good spirit and cares about how things look and should be! Our Bells Creek Road group had the sponsorship of McDonalds new store in Glass House, IGA in Beerwah, ACW Sunshine (C/_Dave the Lollyman) and last but not least Daleys Turf. Without the help of our sponsors, the event would not have gone so well, so sponsors, Thank You ever so much. With our effort and your support you make it seem worthwhile. Overall we collected a huge amount of rubbish, including tyres, mattresses, whitegoods and domestic rubbish. So at the end of the day to all of us who think dump fees are too expensive, or maybe are too lazy to do the right thing and put it in a bin, let’s pull together, tidy up our country, and make it a better place to pass on to our younger generation. April 9 meeting to discuss mobile coverage blackpots

There’s been a wonderful response to our call for people to register for a meeting about phone reception with Paul Fletcher, the Parliamentary Secretary to Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull. We have about 200 people registered to attend. The meeting will be Wednesday, April 9 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. We are still finalising details of the exact time. Mr Fletcher will discuss the Government’s $100 million Regional Mobile Coverage Program from which we are competing for a slice of funding. I will update everyone with full details when we have finalised an exact time for the meeting. But remember to note the date in your diary. To register, email your details to Helen.squires@aph.gov.au

Motorcycle Champ No. 2 in the world

I was pleased to present Hunter Lawrence from Beerwah High with a Sporting Champions Award from the Australian Sports Commission at school assembly on Thursday. Hunter received the grant to help him compete at the KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championships. He was one of 14 people from Fisher to receive a grant. What I didn’t know until I heard from his mum is that Hunter is No. 2 in the world in his division! Last year Hunter represented Australia for the third time at the FIM world junior motocross championships. He missed out on being world champ by just one point.

Schools want autonomy to determine how they spend their money

“National, national, national” … that’s all you hear from the Labor Party when it comes to their vision for education. Alternatively, my view is local, local, local — local parents, local businesspeople, local teachers and local school bodies that get together and work to meet the challenges in their own school communities to get the outcomes that we are all seeking. Let me know what you think. I know many of the principals I have spoken to would like more autonomy to decide where money is spent on educating local kids.

Major recreational rider park set for Mooloolah

Mobile Offices in Eudlo and Glass House Mountains

I’m pleased to share some great news with you regarding the Caloundra Electorate. This month the State Government made a major announcement about plans to create a 534HA recreational rider park for the Sunshine Coast, located right here in our electorate at Mooloolah. So what is it all about and what does it mean for locals and the Sunshine Coast? The Minister for National Parks, Steve Dickson, identified the need for a facility to cater for riders of all ages and abilities to stop illegal riding in the National Park to better protect that environment and improve the safety of riders in a purpose built area. What they have come up with is a plan to create a recreational rider park in the degraded former Mooloolah Logging area, located between Steve Irwin Way and the Bruce Highway. They are hoping to provide similar riding opportunities to those at the Queensland Moto Park at Wyaralong, which has been extremely successful since its opening in 2011. Purpose-built tracks will be created for motocross, freestyle motocross and minikhana. There will be a dedicated area for a motocross track for use by the Suncoast Junior Motorcycle club currently located at Coolum and a BMX track will also be located on the site. This proposed park has the potential to be a major winner for the Caloundra Electorate and the Sunshine Coast. Australia Zoo great Terri Irwin has stated she welcomes the proposal, saying “this is exactly what our community needs and will give riders and their families the opportunity to have an area designated for their sport.” This could greatly enhance the tourism industry as part of our local economy, creating more jobs and attracting even more visitors to our region. It is expected the park will be open to the public by mid-2015. Consultation is going to occur in May and I encourage you to have your say.

The start of a new year signifies the commencement of my Glass House mobile offices which are held throughout the electorate several times during the year. I understand it can be difficult for community members to access services at my Maleny office so I use these mobile locations as a way of making myself available in places that suit the community. I will be setting up mobile offices in Eudlo and Glass House Mountains on Friday, March 21. If you have a state related issue you need to discuss please make sure you come along and see me. 7.30am to 8.45am @ Eudlo (Kids playground near Eudlo State School at Rosebed Street) 3.00pm to 4.30pm @ Glass House Mountains (Glasshouse Mountains Information Centre)

Peachester Community Barbecue I would like to invite the community of Peachester to a community barbecue on Friday, April 11 from 3.00pm to 4.30pm. Come along to the Peachester Hall to enjoy a sausage sizzle and a chat about local issues. For further information please contact my office on 5435 2013 or find details on my website www.andrewpowell.com.au

Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay now drought declared Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay shires have now been drought declared, meaning producers in need in Glass House can now apply for State and Federal Government assistance. This drought relief assistance includes freight subsidies and emergency water infrastructure rebates, as well as leasehold land rent rebates and water licence fee relief. I encourage local producers to contact DAFF on 13 25 16 for application forms and further assistance. Income support through the Federal Government’s farm allowance is also available by contacting Centrelink on 13 23 16. The allowance will help with daily living expenses like putting food on the table and paying their electricity bills.

iPads, the tool of the future More and more people are finding that the convenience of an iPad is overtaking the use of a laptop. More apps are being made with this in mind. Take a photo with it and discover the many photo editing programs to sharpen, correct the exposure, straighten, crop and the list goes on. But what if you want to make your picture a work of art? There are many of these programs, like Paint FX which I used to create a more artistic look. With this program you can submit your photo into the competition and your photo gets rated and seen by the many followers around the world.

U3A Grafx Group meets at the Beerwah Library each Thursday afternoon, from 2.00pm – 8:30pm. New members are always welcome to find out more email mnjthompson@aapt.net.au

Mary Grigor, nee Fenwick One enduring aspect of historical research is you can never say your research is finished. You can never say we know it all. Recently, Ethel Burgess (Mary’s great grand-daughter) retrieved an old book from the top shelf of her wardrobe. The title ‘The Book of Common Prayer’ was not in itself significant, but it was the handwritten inscription on the inside cover that was most interesting. The inscription read ‘Mary Fenwick, Southampton, August 23, 1861’. From their earlier research, the Friends of Bankfoot House were aware that 25-year-old Mary Fenwick had returned to England in February 1860 in the employ of Captain John Wickham and his pregnant wife Ellen. Mary was to support Mrs Wickham during their sea voyage and a son (Henry Falkland Wickham) was born aboard the ship, ‘Duncan Dunbar’, near the Falkland Islands. Upon arrival in England, Mary was discharged from her role. Her movements were next recorded in the Scottish census of 1861 which showed Mary as a visitor in her aunt’s house in Edinburgh. When and how she travelled to Southampton (England) is not currently known but the book inscription places her in Southampton approximately one week prior to her departure for Australia on the ship ‘Oithona’. Mary, still a single woman, arrived in Melbourne on December 7, 1861 and made her way back to Queensland. There are numerous family documents, books and personal letters in the Bankfoot House Collection and future research on these will no doubt open another rich vein of local history.

If you are interested in joining the Friends of Bankfoot House, phone 5493 0197 on Wednesday, or contact the President Ron Gillinder on 0407 760 989. Email friends@bankfoothouse.org to find out more check out the website www.bankfoothouse.org www.gcnews.com.au

Travelling Tales

with Ella Mitchell

Thirteen-year-old Ella Mitchell of Peachester sent us her Travel Tale from the trip she took with her brother Flynn, and mum Alex over the Christmas holidays, this is her story. "We went on a trip to Africa and it was the best thing I’ve ever done. The people lived in what they could find. Wherever you went, there was some cardboard and a worn away blanket; wherever you went, there was someone’s home. We went to work at an orphanage in Kandara, north of Nairobi, in rural Kenya. When we arrived at the orphanage, we were greeted by two people, the security guard and a five-year-old boy called Newton. Then loads of little kids came running down, singing and chanting. They would wait at our door every morning to play. We did activities with them like craft, cricket and making Christmas decorations. We taught the younger kids ‘Ring a Ring a Rosy’ and they taught us nursery songs in their own language. No one knew what anyone was saying, but everyone enjoyed it. I remember watching a girl my age smile from ear to ear at the art she had made. These kids were like a massive family; they all had each other’s backs. They had two sections, the baby unit where children from birth to four years were, and all kids older than the age of four were in another section. These kids were the happiest people I’ve ever seen. They had nothing, but at the same time they had everything. We sit here and complain that we don’t have the material things that we want, like a blue iPhone or a pair of Vans, but what we don’t realise is, the stuff we own doesn’t have anything to do with being a good person and being happy with our lives. We dread the thought of school, when these kids are excited to wake up, put their uniform on and go to school because they feel so privileged to be able to attend school when so many kids can’t. I learnt so much going to Africa. I knew that buying loads of school shoes, books, stationery and toys for the kids would help them, but in the end, they were the ones that helped me. I know it sounds heaps cheesy but it’s true. The experience made me realise how lucky we are. How lucky we all are. We are so privileged to be raised here and to have food, education and homes to live in. God has given us these privileges, and with those privileges comes a responsibility to look after those who are less fortunate. Making a difference to other people’s lives is the greatest accomplishment of all. I remember thinking before we went to Africa “What can I do? I’m only a kid,” but we can do a lot more than we think. We are the next generation, and we have the power to make a change. I know that’s really deep but mission trips and donating money and clothes actually does make a big difference to someone."

Have you travelled recently? Whether it's state or national borders that you have crossed, we’d love to hear about your travel adventures. Send us an email at editorial@gcnews.com.au, and be sure to include plenty of happy snaps.

Tania has been working in the jewellery industry for 27 years, and over 11 of these years she has spent running her own business locally at the Beerwah Marketplace. She is a qualified jeweler having undertaken a four year apprenticeship as well as completing additional training to qualify as a setter. And while Tania doesn’t spend as much time as she would like crafting one off pieces, she really enjoys the creative process of designing pieces for her clients, and loves the challenge of a client coming into the store with a lump of gold and a handful of stones and asking what they can do with them. Over the years, Tania has really enjoyed developing strong relationships with her regular clients, who in turn have recommended Smileys Jewellers to their friends and family who live outside of the area. She says that choosing jewellery is such a personal experience, but once you get to know people and they trust you, you feel more comfortable finding the perfect piece for them. Tania strongly believes in giving back to the community and she regularly supports the fundraising efforts of many local community groups.

Narelle and her husband Robert have been farming locally for the past 34 years growing strawberries and pineapples, and in 2009 they opened the butcher shop at the farm. The Barry Family Butcher is definitely a family affair with mother Narelle and daughter Kylie both working full-time in the business, and often customers will see Kylie’s little one Erin (3), helping out her very proud grandfather Robert. Narelle is kept busy with sales and deliveries and Kylie’s role is mainly office administration, but she also helps with the processing of the hams, bacon and small goods. The locals like the idea that it is a family owned and operated business and knowing they have their own cattle means they have quality product to sell to their customers. They also pride themselves on their award-winning quality ham and bacon made in their own premises. Some locals may remember Kylie from when she worked part-time at Moroney’s Landscaping Supplies from 2004 to 2008 or through her long-time involvement with the Beerwah Bulldogs Rugby League Club, where this year she is the Senior Men’s Registrar.

In 1981 Carolyn completed her accounting degree and went on to work in her father’s accounting business. Moving to Woodford in 1992, she became a partner in the Woodford Saleyards while continuing to contract to the family accounting business. At this time she started doing some local work. Eventually buying her own computer, she started up the local office and has never looked back. Specialising in small to medium businesses, livestock and primary producers - the office has grown from a one person, two day business, to a three person full time business. Although the business has grown – mostly through word of mouth, Carolyn is still the easily reachable person she always has been and still conducts all the interviews. The office has been moved twice, firstly to larger premises, then again because that office became the middle of the new Woolworths car park and they were forced to move. Over the years, Carolyn has been involved in a number of local not-for-profit organisations. The business is proud to be the main sponsor of the Woodford Ladies Breast Cancer Golf Day and has done so for the past 10 years. Having lived and raised her family in Woodford for over 20 years, Carolyn likes to take time out to read, take the dogs to the beach, and eat out with friends, as well as regular travel here and overseas.

After graduating from University of Queensland in 1985 I have worked in the industry constantly since that time. I have run my own business for 24 years, last year sold my practice in Brisbane south after 23 years and last year I opened Glass House Holistic Veterinary Services. I started off doing things ‘conventionally’ but realised fairly early on that there are major limitations to conventional medicine. In 1993 I started the journey through the complementary / alternative modalities starting with acupuncture; from there my list of interests expanded to include homeopathy herbs, flower remedies, nutrition, essential oils, reiki and also taking a really good look at the human animal bond. The changes one can achieve with sensible non-invasive treatments is quite astounding and the over use of medication conventionally I think is a really big issue affecting animal health. One thing that is really important to me is getting to know pets and their owners; this also helps me to offer a holistic treatment to greatly benefit your pet’s health. I am an avid horse rider and have been competing in dressage events, for over 30 years and am now also a judge and the president of the North Coast active riders group (a dressage club based at Nambour). www.gcnews.com.au

PEACHESTER ART SHOW 2014

Opening Night Event

Glasshouse Market suspended During the two month break after the last market in December, the management of the Glasshouse Market has decided to suspend the market operations to seek new resources to invest in the market. Last year was a very tough year for the Glasshouse Market as both the stallholders and the market management team recorded a decline in attendance. During the year, we tried to diversify the services offered, including the opening of the Trash and Treasure section and car boot sale but unfortunately the results did not see an increase in attendance. This might have also been due to the non-primary location of the market and the lack of necessary resources to back up such an initiative, which would have improved the investments in marketing and in this way attract more people from the Glasshouse Country region. At this stage the market will remain suspended for an undetermined period to allow time for the management to find more collaborators and therefore extra resources necessary to improve the overall operations. We are not giving up as we do not like the idea of seeing our market cease activities and for the community to lose such a great hub. There is hope to find any interested parties that will help the market to open again. We apologise for any conflicting information previously published. If you want to find out more info, please contact the administration team at info@glasshousemarket.com or visit www.glasshousemarket.com

The hall will be transformed into an exciting display of work produced by talented locals. Volunteer of the Year Award

Jennifer Le Patourel has been a dedicated volunteer in our office for the past two years. She is a very valuable member of our team who assists with our accounts and running of the office. She also assists in community tree plant and workshop preparations such as ‘The Raised Vegie Gardens’ and ‘Frog ID’ workshop. Jennifer has a cheerful and happy disposition and is always willing to pitch in and help when needed. All of us at Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare love her and we hope that she will stay with the organisation for many more years to come. We congratulate Jennifer on the Volunteer of the Year Award 2014, which we all agree she certainly deserves. I am sure she will enjoy the food hamper we presented her with as a thank you for her help. Volunteers are crucial to our not-for-profit community organisation because funding does not cover all the various aspects and jobs that are required to run a dynamic conservation group such as Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare. Have you considered volunteering? We would love more volunteers in our office and native plant nursery. If you are interested please contact us on 5494 5074 or by email mrwl@caloundra.net Jennifer Le Patourel with her well-deserved Volunteer of the Year award

Go Green Rainforest Nursery Plant of the Week Grevillea Elegance

Here at Go Green one of our favourite bird attracting Grevilleas is ‘Elegance’. As its name suggests it has a beautiful form with ornamental fine foliage and exquisite pinkish red flowers. The flowers are dripping with nectar and provide a valuable food source for many native birds throughout the year. This stunning Grevillea is best grown in full sun and a free draining position. It will grow to around 3m but can be kept smaller with an annual prune. There is a stunning example in full flower that is four years old planted on the road reserve outside the nursery. Check it out whilst driving by, or drop in for a closer look.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Many species of eucalypts grow in Queensland but only those species detailed below are koala food trees. Koala food trees are divided into primary and secondary species. Primary species contain all the essential nutrients balanced in such a way as to maintain optimal health. Secondary species are usually found growing on marginal land where leaf nutrient levels and moisture content are lower. The reasons for the variation in nutrient levels relates to the soil profile and rainfall. The thick nutrient rich soils of the coastal fringes provide higher nutrient levels and higher densities of koalas are found on the coast compared to inland koala populations. Adult koalas and joeys will chose species that vary from one location to another according to what grows in their home range. Koalas can survive entirely from the primary species but cannot maintain optimal health eating only secondary species. The home range of koalas living on the coastal fringe varies from one to five kilometres, much smaller than for those populations living further inland where the home ranges can extend up to 15 kilometres. Adults will preferentially use different species. For example, Swamp Mahogany (Eucalyptus robusta) is not eaten by joeys until they become sub adults. Once a koala joey becomes an adult (the size of a football) they will then eat whatever is available. Koalas with Chlamydial disease will often be found eating from food trees with lower phenol and tannin levels such as Brush Box and if suffering from digestive problems will selectively chose leaves from the broad leaved paperbark. Primary species Qld Blue Gum (Eucalyptus tereticornis) Narrow-leaf Ironbark (Eucalyptus crebra) Tallow Wood (Eucalyptus microcorys) Small-fruited Grey Gum (Eucalyptus propinqua) Swamp Mahogany (Eucalyptus robusta) Secondary species Spotted Gum (Corymbia citriodora) Large-leaf Spotted Gum (Corymbia henryi) Pink Bloodwood (Corymbia intermedia) Large-fruited Grey Gum (Eucalyptus biturbinata) Grey Ironbark (Eucalyptus siderophloia) Rose Gum (Eucalyptus grandis) Gum-topped Box (Eucalyptus mollucana) Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) Scribbly Gum (Eucalyptus racemosa) Red Mahogany (Eucalyptus resinifera) Sydney Blue Gum (Eucalyptus saligna) Narrow-leaf Red Gum (Eucalyptus seeana) Grey Ironbark (Eucalyptus siderophloia) Brush Box (Lophostemon confertus) Medicinal tree Broad-leaved Paperbark (Melaleuca quinquenervia) Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Community activities Hello everyone and welcome to the First National Real Estate fortnightly update. It is that time again for the yearly ‘Biggest Morning Tea’. As a lot of you would be aware, last year we held a morning tea to support the Australian Cancer Council, successfully raising money to support this fantastic cause. This year our Biggest Morning Tea will be held on Thursday, May 22 at the Beerwah Golf Club. We are looking for supporters to help us raise funds for this great cause. Can you help by donating items for the raffle which will be held on the

day? Please contact our office on 5494 6444 and ask for either Jody or Nicole and we will be able to assist you with your donation. Doors will open at 9.30am on May 22 and an entry fee of $10.00 will be payable, with all proceeds being forwarded to the Cancer Council. We look forward to seeing everyone there for a cuppa and cake and a morning filled with fun activities to share among friends. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY ANGLICAN CHURCH

Father Kevin Smith Caloundra Catholic Community Many Christian churches and communities have commenced a period of time we call Lent. It usually lasts 40 days and begins on Ash Wednesday. This length of time comes from the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert. The Bible accounts of this episode in Jesus' life tell us that this was a pretty rough time for Him. As well as the hunger, thirst and loneliness that one would expect, Jesus also confronts challenges that come from within him and so many Bibles call this episode ‘Jesus is tempted in the desert’. To deny that Jesus faced temptation in his life is to deny his humanity. So each year we are invited to follow Him into the desert for 40 days. Some people remember this as time of going without things. This is the desert bit but it is just setting the mood. I remember my mum telling me that when she was a teenager she went without sugar in her tea and when Lent was over she never had sugar again. Over these days as we journey with Jesus we also face our temptations and ask ourselves what truly satisfies our hungers and what does not. Living more simply and being more aware of others can

WEDNESDAYS *Mooloolah (Paget Road) 9.00am SUNDAY *Mary MacKillop Centre 9.00am

often bring out the best in us. It means we are kinder to our environment and to those people much less fortunate than ourselves. Pausing from the busy routine of life helps us to see the many reasons to be grateful and to live life with a genuine spirit of joy even though we may have all sorts of difficult problems to face. The biggest challenge is that Lent is meant, with God's help, to bring out the best in us. Long ago a woman told me she goes without alcohol for Lent but her husband told me that he did the penance! What does all this lead to after the 40 days. Hopefully, it leads to better selves, kinder hearts, healed hurts and those apart now reconciled. These days lead to the greatest hope and healing that we could ever imagine. The victory of life over death.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Ewen Maddock puts on a fishing show

Last weekend saw over 50 keen anglers spend time on Ewen Maddock Dam chasing ‘the big one’ in the Ewen Maddock Fish Stockers Challenge. People came from Ipswich, the Gold Coast, Gympie and even Bundaberg to work the waters of our fantastic local reservoir. Organised by the Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc group – who raise money from this and other events to release native fish fingerlings into Ewen Maddock Dam – the annual catch and release competition has grown into a two day affair, which is becoming well recognised within the fishing fraternity. According to group president, David Brace, the participants also really enjoyed being able to camp overnight at the Camp and Recreation Centre. “For non-locals, being able to come and camp before the competition meant that they were able to familiarise themselves with the dam and its layout,” he said. “It also meant we were able to host some evening entertainment to get people talking and some friendships forming. “Combined with some good fishing, this year’s event was a great success.” The competitors set out for a furious day's fishing on Ewen Maddock Dam 30 |

Congratulations

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

Sasha Norton riding Kintyre Pegasus, won reserve champion for best performed Welsh Bred Pony Clubber. Sasha is a riding member of the Glasshouse Horse and Pony Club. If you own a Welsh pony and compete regularly, points are accumulated over the year and you can win either a rug or saddle blanket. For more information contact Belinda Short 0404 497127.

Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club Contributed by Judy Walker On Tuesday, March 11 the B team of James Sammon, Ian Henderson and Eileen Pierce came from behind to defeat Rob Hall, Lloyd Walker and Nev Shaw by 1 point. Well done. On Friday the winners were Ann Carroll and

Horst Jonscher, 2nd Kevin Jenner and Eileen Pierce and 3rd Tony Pignata and Peter Setch. Raffles won by Gwen Henderson and Nev Shaw. The girls played at Kingaroy this week in trying conditions. We had a good time.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Jenny Kelly Yet again, we were blessed with lovely weather for our game on Thursday. Sixty five ladies came out to play a Par event for trophies kindly donated by Beth Butler and Barb McIntosh. The players would like to thank Beth and Barb, and all the ladies who donate trophies for our competitions every week.

Your generous contribution helps to keep our great club strong. We played in two Divisions, and the winner of Div 1 was Lea Doyle with a great score of + 4. Lea was closely followed by Gail Gundry on + 3. Gloria White, a winner from a couple of weeks ago, has played well again to win Div 2. Gloria came in all square to win on a count back from Debs Rutherford, who also came in square with the card. Nearest to the pins went to Jen Kelly on 2 and 16 and Lea took out the 5th. Monica Dangerfield was closest with her first shot on the 18th and Sue Wood took out the Div 2 NTP with her second shot. The ball rundown went to –2. Next week we are playing a Stroke event so we hope to see you on the fairways, until then stay safe and good golfing.

Lea Doyle, Barb McIntosh and Gloria White

Contributed by Trevor Bertram Our monthly ‘Jackpot Three Bowl Triples’ was played last Wednesday with Grahame Young, Julie Palmer and Maurie Dawes winning the day on a four way count-back. Second place went to Dennis Hume, Jack Timm and Di Hunt. The ‘Out of the Hat’ prize went to Warren Blackbourne, John McSwain and Millie Freshwater. The Jackpot was not won, so next month’s game will be in excess of $275.00. More teams are welcome to join us on Wednesday, April 9 for next month’s game and a chance to win the Jackpot. Thursday morning’s game was won by Kevin Beasley and Rob Farrell with two wins and 42 points and the runners-up were Clive Sinton and Phil Siggers. Bede Burton and Jack Timm won the afternoon game also with two wins and 42 points and the runners-up were Rob Scullion and Brian Fogarty. Round 1 of the 2014 Men’s Fours Club Championship was played on Sunday. Results were Rowan Bruce def Graham Richardson, Bill Tumbridge def Rob Farrell, John McSwain def Terry Little and Kerry Capern def Richard White. The Semi-Final will be played next Sunday, March 23 at 1.00pm. Our ladies will compete in the Section Play Offs of the Super Challenge competition at Bramble Bay next Saturday, March 22. They will meet Nambour in the morning and if successful will play Bramble Bay in the afternoon for the chance of a berth in the Quarter Finals at Tweed Heads. Coming Events:9.00am - Monday, March 24 - Monthly ‘Open Two Bowl Triples’.

Golf anyone? Father Norton woke up Sunday morning and realising, after a long period of terrible weather, it was beautiful and sunny. He decided he just had to play golf. So he told the Associate Pastor that he was feeling sick and persuaded him to say mass for him that day. Father Norton headed out of town to a golf course about 40 miles away. This way he knew he wouldn't accidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish. Setting up on the first tee, he was alone. After all, it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church!

Your Stars

At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord, while looking down from the heavens and exclaimed, "you're not going to let him get away with this, are you?" The Lord sighed, and said, "no, I guess not." Just then Father Norton hit the ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping just short of it, rolled up and fell into the hole. It was a 420 yard hole in one! Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord and asked, "why did you let him do that?" The Lord smiled and replied, "who's he going to tell?" PISCES February 20 – March 20 There is a pleasant transit of planets bringing attention to your needs and opinions. So your imagination will soar and you will spread confidence to other people’s energies and get feedback of positive news about them at the month’s end. Under a Mercury Jupiter benefit, it is a time of reaffirming love with your expanded family. ARIES March 21 – April 20 On March 21 the Sun enters your sign. This will start a very lively birthday month. You may want to connect with others and share pleasure, passion and flirty conversations. However, the planets are in highs and lows, so your arousal levels shift from hot to cold. Rub the genie’s lamp at end of month! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 With the Sun and the New Moon giving pioneering Aries a real boost, it however will press your inner exploration buttons. It may be time to retreat from a hectic social schedule and gain some cat naps. A sudden subconscious epiphany light bursts through and sudden opportunities give you a fresh start now. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This week sees a very exciting time for you under a harmonious aspect between Venus and Uranus. A grander venture will capture you, either in a new book, or a romantic outing. With Jupiter, the planet of luck and expansion going direct now, matches up with Mercury in Pisces, providing amazing psychic intuition.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 With Saturn your ruling planet moving backwards to the point of where it was last November, it is time to rethink all your past poetic fairy-tales that played through your mind, but not into reality. However, good news flows in, from around the world about a grand, glorious, and love filled future. A secret attraction. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Now that Jupiter is going direct in Cancer, it should open doors of opportunity and approval in joint funds. Put the word ‘security’ into your budget, and note that family funds may come through, or someone provides the resources that you and your loved ones need. New plans now can turn your heart into bringing comfort. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Your thinking processes are moving into long range plans and far away interests. As Mercury in Pisces joins up with Neptune, it makes a lovely aspect to Jupiter and Pluto. This means your ideals are inspiring and local and distant news is good and your own conviction helps everything move forward. Nice new encounters. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Now that Mercury enters Pisces, there is a further emphasis on finances and they respond best to a vision that is combined with practical action. As Mercury joins up with Neptune, and Jupiter plays a happy tune too, your dreams take hold and soar into manifestation! There is influential support, a profitable buy to fuel vision.

CANCER June 22 – July 22 Whether it is through arm-chair travel, or an escape into a book or movie, your mind will enjoy roaming far and wide. With the equinox and the Sun sign changing its signal you have the start of a new lease on life, providing you let go of something old, in order to move forward. Plan a trip taking in a good seminar. LEO July 23 – August 22 The last week of March holds some troubled conversation, however, a nice aspect between Jupiter and Pluto brings positive news and private influential support. As the Sun enters the sign of robust Aries it lights up your sign with optimism. Venus in your relationship sector means affinity and attraction to an artist now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 A joint project could be very interesting with an exciting Venus / Uranus positive flavor. Also good, is Jupiter, now going direct, which is a boon for your social life, friendships, and group causes. In fact all your hopes for the future pick up a cozy momentum under Jupiter’s positive and beneficial flow. Saturn brings stability. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 With the Sun changing over to Aries at the ‘equinox’ it activates partnership affairs for at least a month. As Venus takes on relationship issues, and has good aspects to Mars, we might find you working hard to sort out the affairs of your partner. The emphasis is on partnerships, wills and sorting out joint finances or taxes.
