OCTOBER 19 2016
Hi Everyone
W
ell by the look of the front cover you can see we are definitely covering the big issues – are you ready for Melbourne Cup? As I read over the paper for the final time – I did notice that while we have dedicated four pages to the topic of Melbourne Cup, that at no time did we actually mention anything about horses. Yes so while many of our local ladies and some of our local fellas may have given some thought to, or even already purchased their outfit for the day, how many of us will even know the names of the horses that will be competing, up until the morning of the event? And crazier still, what will be the method we use for choosing our horse; over the years I have adopted a range of approaches. Firstly, favourite colours of the jockeys shirts, trying to find some sort of ‘sign’ in the horses' names .. such as having media in their names? Last year I just went with listening to the television presenters on morning television (at least that way I knew some of the horses names). Basically I, like many others, just embrace the day as a way of having a few hours out of the office, getting dressed up and relaxing with the GC&M News Team before the busy run until Christmas. So if you have a foolproof way of picking a winner, please let me know on editorial@gcnews.com.au Regards,

Science graduate inspired by passion for wildlife

Leanne Bridges, 30, received a University Medal along with her Bachelor of Science (Animal Ecology) at her recent graduation ceremony, after achieving a grade point average of 6.82 out of a possible 7. Leanne grew up in Central Australia, spending her formative years in Kings Canyon National Park and Alice Springs and developing a keen interest in nature through her father’s work as a park ranger. After working in industries such as real estate and as a technical assistant for Boeing Australia, Leanne decided to turn her passion for wildlife conservation into a career by enrolling at USC in 2013. Initially nervous about the prospect of attending university, Leanne said she had embraced the chance to delve into the science of the natural world. “Spending my formative years in wild areas instilled in me such a high regard for nature, and an understanding that we humans have the capacity to do significant damage,” Leanne said. “It wasn’t until later on that I realised that my interest in conservation issues could become a career path for me.
“I just loved being able to study ecology at a higher level – in the classroom and in the field – and all my lecturers were so passionate about what we were studying.” As well as completing fieldwork in northern New South Wales, Fraser Island and around the Sunshine Coast as part of her degree, Leanne last year undertook an incredibly inspirational 40day placement in Kruger National Park in South Africa. “Being able to do a placement with South African National Parks at Kruger was life-changing – I’ve maintained connections with international researchers that I met there,” she said. “Receiving the medal at the USC graduation was pretty incredible, particularly in front of my dad who travelled from Alice Springs, and my mum and stepdad who supported me throughout my studies. It was a special day that I’ll always remember.
ihear Beerwah - Your LOCAL Hearing Professionals One in six Australians is affected by hearing loss – that’s an estimated 3.5 million people. Hearing loss in Australia is mainly mild in nature, but one third of people experience a loss that is moderate or severe to profound.
The number of Australians who are hearing impaired or deaf is increasing because of long-term exposure to excessive noise in the workplace, the environment and a result of an ageing population. Hearing loss is projected to increase to 1 in every 4 Australians by 2050.
The prevalence of hearing loss rises from 1% for people aged younger than 15 years to three in every four people aged over 70 years.

New shops to grow Beerwah New child care centre Have you been wondering what is happening at the corner of Simpson Street and Pine Camp Road in Beerwah? With the earlier demolition of the old house behind the Paint Place building and more recently the one at the corner, big changes are afoot. Plans were approved earlier this year allowing for the construction of a small shopping centre. The existing building housing Paint Place, Fine Line Hair Studio and Beerwah Chinese Takeaway is to remain, with two new retail complexes constructed behind and adjacent. The total floor space will be approximately 1,228 square metres, with 67 parking spaces in total. The development application documents suggest the likely tenants may include a butcher, fruit and vegetable store, fish market and bakery. The fresh produce is envisaged to operate as a market similar to those proven successful in areas such as James Street, The Valley and Gasworks at Newstead. Road access will be off Pine Camp Road, whilst pedestrian access will be through an architectural entrance structure off Simpson Street. To read more about the proposal, go to www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au and search for MCU14/0035 and MCU14/0035.01

The old Mooloolah Valley Country Club on Glenview Road at Glenview is poised to transform once more. After being privately purchased and run as Jae’s Place for a number of years, the now disused building is being considered for a child care centre. A Material Change of Use application has been made to the Sunshine Coast Council on behalf of Connected Learning Outcomes Pty Ltd, which proposes that the building and the old lawn bowls area be used for a child care centre and associated activities. A planning report provided as part of the application identifies that the development proposes to accommodate a maximum of 79 children and 12 staff, and to develop the bowling greens into covered outdoor play spaces. As a consequence, there will be a new car parking facility built on the western side of the building, with a total of 32 parking spaces provided on-site. The applicant also proposes the establishment of a separated room within the existing building which will be provided to allow access to local sporting clubs to utilise as a meeting room (e.g. presentation and awards nights). The application is seeking to change the allowable use of the land, as it is currently in the Sport and Recreation Zone, to include child care services. The applicant argues that the change is warranted as there are no services catering to birth to 15-month-olds in Glenview, Palmview or Mooloolah, and that local residential growth is expected such that the supply of birth to six-year-old old child care services will be unable to keep pace with the projected demand. The business plan identifies that Connected Learning Outcomes Pty Ltd hopes to have the centre operational next January, pending council approval. To read more about the proposal, see www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au and search for MCU16/0229.

FINALIST - Sunshine Coast Business Awards 2016 Maleny Chamber of Commerce nominated us for an award and we have gone through the process and are now a Finalist! The award categories are: • Business Award for “Social Enterprise” • Excellency Award for “Excellence in Collaboration” • Excellency Award for “Excellence in Sustainability Solutions” Our Financial Literacy Workbook is a social enterprise project, giving high school students an education in financial literacy. It was in collaboration with Maleny State High School this workbook
Maleny Credit Union
was formed. This workbook came about from difficulties we faced when some young people came through the credit union doors to apply to refinance a multitude of personal debts. It was plain to see that some had no basic financial understanding and were getting themselves into “hot water” and were certainly not heading towards a secure financial future. The workbook is a free teachers resource we have available to all high schools that wish to give their students an understanding of all things financial. From earning, saving, budgeting, spending through to taxation, super, insurance, identity theft and scams, loyalty programs, credit cards and much more. This time last year the workbook was being used at Maleny State High School but has now expanded to include Beerwah State High School; Grace Lutheran College and STEMM at Burnside State High School. The workbook resulted in securing special guest speaker Dale Symons from MoneySmart Canberra at this year’s inaugural Hinterland Finance and Sustainability Expo which was collaboration between Maleny Chamber of Commerce and Maleny Credit Union.

Chappy Golf Day a success! On Sunday, September 11, four local chaplains hosted a fundraising golf day held at the Beerwah Golf Club. Fifteen teams of golfers turned up in support of this great cause. The 59 players teed off at 12.00noon and enjoyed a fun afternoon of golf in beautiful weather, with lunch and dinner all included plus a live auction and the presentation of some fantastic prizes. The winners were the team from Rumba Beach Resort in Caloundra. Overall, the day raised nearly $9,000 which is a great boost to our local school chaplaincy services. It all helps, as our chaplains continue
to support the children and young people of Glasshouse Country as well as family members and teachers. Thanks to the large number of businesses and individuals who generously supported the day through sponsorship and donations. This successful fundraising event would not have been a reality without you. Also thanks to the team of wonderful chaplaincy volunteers who worked hard on the day to make everything run smoothly. If you would like to know more about school chaplaincy please contact your local chaplain through their school office.

The Blackall 100 – 3rd edition
Australia’s most spectacular rainforest run The Blackall 100 will be held in on the weekend of October 22 and 23. The event will see 500 participants from all levels of competitiveness to take part in 50km and 100km runs along The Hinterland Great Walk and its surrounds. The spectacular rainforest scenery will make for one of Australia’s most spectacular running events, with the trails ideally suited for both experienced runners and fun-runners. The Blackall 100 will be hosted at the Mapleton campus of the Queensland Conference and Camping Centre (QCCC), which offers outdoor education facilities and experiences in the heart of Sunshine Coast’s Blackall Range. “The Run Queensland team has put a huge amount of effort into organising The Blackall 100 and it will provide a great opportunity for the Sunshine Coast to showcase its Hinterland region, its natural beauty, great food and produce, and the excellent range of accommodation.” This 3rd edition sees last year’s winners of the 100km, Troy Lethlean and Shona Stephenson, and in the 50km Scott Farrell and Danielle Gage, all coming back to defend their Titles. With $1,000.00 up for grabs in the 100km and $500.00 for breaking the record, there is set to be some stiff competition. In a real coup for the Run Queensland team, the 2017 edition of the Blackall 100 has just been announced as the Australian National Long Trail Championship event (100 km event). In addition the 2017 race will become a Western States Endurance Race qualifying event, http://www.wser.org/, one of only two events in Australia to have this distinction. While the 100km and 50km races will be challenging, we will ensure that running conditions will be safe and controlled, so that it will suit experienced runners, as well as those who just want a unique opportunity to run along some of the most picturesque trail in Australia. To find out more about the event check out their website at www.blackall100.com

Spring Fair almost here
Beerwah CWA members have been keeping busy planning for this year’s Spring Fair to be held on Beerwah’s Tower Green and in the CWA Hall on Saturday, November 5 between 10.00am to 3.00pm. On Friday last week Cr Baberowski caught up with the CWA ladies about their plans for the day and how the event is coming together. Cr Baberowski said this was a great time of year to be able to bring the local community together to enjoy some time relaxing and reconnecting with neighbours and for new residents to learn more about the local area. There will be local artisan market stalls, local community groups, and local School P&F associations. In addition to the market and community stalls, there will be live music from local young musicians and school performances under the Butterfly Towers.

Spring and early summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors – it’s usually warm, dry and sunny until the wet season arrives. These are also perfect conditions for pine plantation wildfires and HQ Plantations trained firefighting crews are on high alert, along with the Rural Fire Service, ready to respond to even the slightest threat. Safety is their highest priority. While fire towers are in use every day to spot fires, visitors to the plantation are often the first to see smoke or flames and can play a vital role in early detection and even catching arsonists. Where there’s smoke there’s fire If you see smoke or flames, call Triple Zero immediately unless you can see firefighting crews already on the scene. If you see suspicious activity that might be related to a fire or any other illegal activity in the forest, record important personal and vehicle details including gender, height, vehicle model and registration and call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at crimestoppersqld.com.au Reports to Crime Stoppers can be made anonymously and are investigated by the police. Hot tips for a safe day out Check the fire danger rating before heading into the plantation – consider staying at home or going to the beach when the fire danger is severe, extreme or catastrophic. Stay on roads and away from fire tracks – they’re not built for recreation and firefighting crews can’t reach fires if the fire tracks become damaged. Leave roads and fire track entrances clear when parking in the plantation – firefighting vehicles often can’t get past cars or trailers when they’re blocking access routes. Be careful where you park or pull over – a hot exhaust can start a smouldering fire in dry grass that may become a wildfire. If you smoke, take your cigarette butts with you – not only can they start a fire, they cause unsightly litter, end up in waterways and harm wildlife. Don’t light fires – even campfires can become wildfires and its illegal to light any kind of fire in the plantation anyway.

Mooloolah skate ramp setback “We don't believe the railway upgrade will happen any time in the next 20 years, due to Qld Government's financial obligations in other areas,” she said. “Both Eudlo and Landsborough communities have skate parks. Eudlo’s is the same distance from their train station as the proposed half pipe on Way Street. “Both skate ramps are extremely well patronised by children in those communities, and as Mooloolah has absolutely nothing for kids to do, the Mooloolah skate ramp would promote socialising, friendships, exercise in the outdoors and develop skate skills for the young ones. “We would appreciate community comments on the project to enable us to move forward again. “We are not giving up the fight, so watch this space!”
Crafting Christmas tags On Monday, October 24 at the CWA Hall, come along and make a multitude of handmade decorated Christmas tags in time for the festive season. All materials will be provided by Kaszazz Cardmaking supplies. The workshop will run from 10.00am to 12.00noon, with a light morning tea provided. Cost is $10.00. Please RSVP Raquel on 0428 740 560.

Mooloolah is a growing community, with many young families moving into the area for the country lifestyle. And for many of their kids, there’s not a lot to do, especially for those interested in skateboarding. This was recognised in 2015 with over 500 people signing a petition supporting a project to have a skate ramp built in the town. As a result, the Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA) sought and won a $20,000 federal government ‘Stronger Communities’ grant. This was then used to leverage further funding from the Sunshine Coast Council to design and install a half-pipe skate ramp design … a great result for the Association and the community in general. However, the MVCA is now gravely concerned that time is running out to find a suitable location for the ramp to be built. “After nearly 12 months of negotiations with various Queensland Government Ministers, we are now running out of time and in danger of losing our hard won funding for this very worthwhile project,” explained Anita Verwayen, Secretary of MVCA. “The ideal site is in Way Street, behind the Pizza Parlour, on land currently owned by Queensland Rail, where we asked for a lease of 15 years for a small parcel of land to build the ramp.” Disappointingly, Queensland Rail has told the Association that the parcel of land is earmarked for future upgrade and expansion of the rail corridor. Queensland Rail also highlighted community safety and security as a reason they don’t support that location. Not good enough, says Anita Verwayen from MVCA.

Morris House Neighbourhood Centre News
Beerwah women, keep abreast of your health this October! Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service is urging Beerwah women to think about their breast health this month (during breast cancer awareness month) and every month, and make a breast screen appointment. Our BreastScreen Queensland mobile van will be next to the Beerwah Community Hall on Peachester Road from October 24 to November 17. Health promotion officer Kelly Hart said breast cancer remained the most common cancer affecting women in Queensland, and as the second most common cause of cancer death, it was vitally important for women of all ages to be breast aware. “Nine out of 10 women who get breast cancer don’t have a family history of the disease, but some women still believe that if they don’t have breast cancer in their family, they are not at risk of developing this disease themselves,” Ms Hart said. “One in eight Queensland women can develop this disease at some stage in their life, and all women need to be familiar with the look and feel of their own breasts. “If a woman finds a breast lump, a watery or bloodstained nipple discharge, or any breast changes that concern her, she should talk to her doctor as soon as possible.” The other important step that all women over 40 can take to keep on top of their breast health is to participate in a regular two yearly screening program. Breast cancer screening remains the most effective way to detect breast cancer. Although screening doesn’t stop breast cancer developing, finding it early does give women the best possible chance of successful treatment and wellbeing. The BreastScreen Queensland program is a free, high quality breast cancer screening service available to women aged 40 years and over with women aged 50 – 74 years particularly encouraged to attend. A doctor’s referral is not required. To make an appointment at the Beerwah Service or at any of the other permanent screening Services on the Sunshine Coast call 13 20 50. Convenient early morning, late afternoon and Saturday appointments are available.

Is your teen ready for their future? We live in exciting times and it is said that 65% of school children will be employed in jobs that have yet to be created. So how do our teenagers prepare for their future? What career pathways will future-proof fulfilling employment for them? If you have a teen beginning Year 10 in 2017, they are probably already thinking about it, so now is a good time to talk with them about their dreams for the future. Consider stimulating this discussion with a personalised tour of Glasshouse Christian College. GCC recognises the ever evolving face of education and embraces timeless skills that continue to be relevant in the future. The College’s facilities and subjects support all students in their choices; whether it be tertiary education, an apprenticeship, a trade or the workforce.
One of the comments often heard on tour is, “I had no idea there were so many modern facilities.” Visitors are surprised that such a young school has so many innovative, purpose-built rooms. There is the 140-seat theatre, an engineering workshop with five welding bays, high tech metal fabrication and automotive facility, well-equipped science laboratories, hospitality kitchens, a dance studio, gym, modern classrooms, a fantastic library and full wireless network across the whole campus. With a strong emphasis on technology, GCC leads the way in innovation on the Sunshine Coast. Fostering a culture of life-long learning, GCC embraces core values that support its students in becoming mature, responsible and confident adults. GCC’s all-inclusive fees are one of the lowest on
the Sunshine Coast. There are no hidden extras and everything – laptops for secondary students, camps, subject fees, excursions, building projects, library costs – are all included in the one low tuition fee. Don’t wait until the end of the year and hope there are vacancies. Ring Sonya on 5439 0033 to book your tour now.

Christmas Tree Festival
Help shape the future of the Maleny Library
The Maleny Christmas Tree Festival is a display of creative and inspiring trees, with this year’s theme being Christmas Around the World. The display features trees decorated to this theme that have been contributed by community groups from across the Hinterland region. The festival is now in its fifth year, and continues to inspire visitors, young and old alike. Entry is by gold coin donation and all funds go this year to the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary. Make sure you find time in your diary to come along and share in the joy of the season. The event will be held at the Maleny Uniting Church, at 1290 Landsborough /Maleny Road, Maleny from December 17 - 24. On Saturday, December 17 from 10.00am – 8.00pm, Sunday, December 18 from 12.00noon – 4.00pm, From Monday, December 19 each day until Friday, December 23 from 2.00pm – 8.00pm then on Saturday, December 24 from 10.00am – 7.00pm, followed by the Christmas Eve Service.
Four concept plans to extend the much-loved Maleny Library will be available for community feedback until Friday, November 4. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the Sunshine Coast Library Plan 2014-2024, the result of an extensive community engagement program, identified a need to investigate opportunities to redesign the Maleny Library, which is the second smallest in the library network, but one of the busiest. “The feedback process is the second stage in the community engagement program which started earlier this year with the community asked to provide their thoughts on what an extended building might look like and what it may include,” Cr McKay said. “It is important that the community has the opportunity to give their views on the Maleny Library Facility Development Plan which will provide recommendations to council on the

expansion of the Maleny Library. “The feasibility study will explore the opportunities for extending the Maleny Library, while retaining the amenity of the building and the needs of the community. “A display has been set up in the foyer of Maleny library until Friday, November 4, to allow the community to vote on the concept plans, which have been designed, following the initial feedback provided.” Cr McKay said community feedback will help to prioritise future investment that aligns with community needs, patterns and interests. “The results of this poll will help council prepare detailed design drawings and costing that will inform a recommendation for council to consider,” Cr McKay said. “However, it is important to note the Facility Development Plan will be dependent on annual budget allocations and funding streams.”
Free NDIS Information Sessions The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing support for people with disability, their families and carers in Australia. To raise community awareness about the NDIS and ensure people with disability, their families and carers are ready for the change and opportunities the scheme will bring, Mamre Pave the Way will be holding free governmentfunded information sessions in the Hinterland region and sharing materials and resources. In October and November, Mamre Pave the Way will be visiting Woodford and the Glass House Mountains offering their Paving the Way to the NDIS presentation, as well as conversations with individuals and families, community groups and
government/non-government agencies. David Bowen, CEO of the National Disability Insurance Agency, says these information sessions are vital in being fully prepared for the NDIS. “Helping Australians understand the fundamental shift behind the NDIS – from the ad-hoc welfare model to one of empowerment and participation – is vital to the successful implementation of the Scheme,” he said. Registrations are essential for presentations and can be completed on the Pave the Way website: www.pavetheway.org.au For more information or to register for a conversation, visit Pave the Way’s website or phone their office on 3291 5800.

Daphne Chase, Resident We use to drive around Woodford all the time and I pointed out to my daughters … “This will be my new home!” So now I am here, I feel very lucky I am enjoying all the activities and the food is beautiful – 10/10. All the staff are really great and support me in every way. I am really enjoying life here. There is a freedom … not being frightened of falling nor worrying about my health. Embracia in Woodford, I am glad to call my new home! Keitha Viney, Wife of resident Richard Viney – Jinabara Memory Support Community I heard that Embracia were building a new home at Woodford which would have a smaller number of residents residing in the Memory Support Community. So I decided there and then that Rick, my husband, should move to Embracia in Woodford. I am really happy with the situation here, it is warm and friendly and the staff are very conscientious. Every time I am here the staff are interacting with all the residents and my husband is contented. I have also recommended this home to others

High tec at the Shed
Contributed by Damien Petrie The members of the Glasshouse Country Menshed were intrigued by a presentation by one of their own members. Jeffrey Hill provided a display of 3D printers as well as products he had manufactured using them. Jeff also provided a handout, as well as a video display and explained the process in detail. According to Jeff, it is not an expensive hobby and indeed, many useful products can be manufactured at home. If you have an interest in 3D printing, drop in to the shed (352 Peachester Road, Beerwah, at Glasshouse Country Care) any Wednesday morning and chat with Jeff, or contact Bob McLean on 0427 606 240. All men welcome.
Charity Sports proceeds presentation
The 45th Beerwah Charity Sports Day was a huge success, raising $27,500 for Cancer Council Queensland. Not only was it a successful day financially, but also a very enjoyable family day out. The Charity Sports was awarded ‘Event of the Year’ in Mark McArdle’s recent Caloundra Electorate Awards - good to see the hinterland’s efforts acknowledged, considering the stiff competition from events in the Caloundra area. The committee would like to thank all those businesses, community groups, volunteers and participants who supported the sports day this year and helped to make it such a success. The cheque was presented to Esther Attewell representing CCQ, with a gathering of Charity Sports Committee members and representatives from the Lions Club.
Lions Cord Blood Foundation Raffle draw The Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club Cord Blood Foundation grocery raffle has been drawn with congratulations going to two ladies from Maleny, Roz and Gwen, who were the lucky winners of a $300.00 grocery card from Maleny IGA. After deducting the amount for groceries, a total of $1,452.75 was raised. In line with the rules of the Foundation, the Foundation will receive half this amount with the remainder donated to a local community project. This has been given to the Maleny Flexi School to assist their needs. The Lions Club would like to thank all Maleny residents who supported the raffle and the Maleny IGA for their assistance in allowing us to sell the tickets and draw the raffle on the premises.

Families visiting the junior area of Sunshine Coast Council’s Maleny Library can now sit back and enjoy a comfy read thanks to the Friends of Maleny Library who have donated a new red, two-seater lounge. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said on behalf of council she would like to thank the Friends of Maleny Library for their ongoing support. “The Friends are a group of enthusiastic supporters who promote the library service, advocate on its behalf and work to strengthen the library’s links with the local community,” Cr McKay said. “The Friends have a monthly book sale on the first Saturday of each month and all funds raised are put back into supporting the library. “The latest purchase includes a comfy new red lounge for the junior area of the branch. “Parents, children and staff have since been enjoying this beautiful new addition and it is the centrepiece of our regular Storytime and Baby Rhymetime sessions, as well as great place for parents to relax and read with their children.” Friends of Maleny Library are volunteers and hold their meetings at 9.00am on the first Thursday of the month at Maleny Library. Caloundra Family History Research
Contributed by Roz Russ The guest speaker at Caloundra Family History Research Inc on Thursday, October 20 will be Janice Cooper. Untapped market awaits
First panels installed on Solar Farm
Business feature Based in Port Lincoln, Scott Pollard is the first Transportable Shade Shed reseller and Saver6.com partner to join the ranks in South Australia. While the product has been well established for many years here in on the east coast of Australia, essentially it is a brand new product into the South Australian market. This marks exciting times for both reseller Scott and the locally based team at Transportable Shade Sheds. Following up on a television campaign promoting Transportable Shade Sheds, Scott realised the huge revenue potential for his area in what has previously been an untapped sales market. Although now based in South Australia, Scott has lived and worked throughout Australia and was familiar with the Transportable Shade Shed product, having previous shed construction experience. Scott has over 30 years of experience in various aspects of the building industry including carpentry, construction, building supply retail and wholesale. Currently, he works full time in a building supply business and operates a roof tiling business on the side. Scott became a reseller for a number of reasons; however a key reason was his confidence in the product, coupled with the opportunity to build on his existing trade and construction industry experience. Scott is excited to have the opportunity to develop a business model that has the potential to offer a solid income stream that is well matched to his skills and experience with the opportunity to grow and expand and help him realise his professional potential. Before becoming a Saver6.com Business Owner last month, Scott decided to extend his current trade licence to include an additional building construction licence to install sheds and garages. By extending his trade licence, and becoming the local representative and reseller of these nationally award winning innovative and adaptable sheds, Scott is hoping to establish a viable business that will allow him to fully work for himself. “At the moment I work over 45 hours a week in a building supply industry job and run my roof tiling business on the side. Transportable Shade Sheds have huge potential in my area and the business model compliments my own trade background. I hope that this will provide an opportunity to get my quality of life back,” explained Scott. “I know the product. It is easy to adapt to customers’ needs and to install. Being locally made in Australia also makes it easy as there is only one person to deal with and any issues if they arise can be dealt with easily. I’m keen to make a decent living off my own back – and maybe even get the boat out of the shed on the weekends!” laughs Scott. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Port Lincoln area, please contact Scott via social media or on 0458 067 283. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area, or are keen to be your own boss, or look at business options that may work well with your current industry, then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.
Please call Scott Pollard, a Saver6.com member and a Transportable Shade Shed specialist. He is available to help you get your Transportable Shade Shed on your property.

A major milestone for the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm project has been reached with the first solar panel table lifted into place and secured recently. When the 15 megawatt (MV) solar farm is complete, Sunshine Coast Council will become Australia’s first local government to offset 100% of its electricity consumption from clean energy across all its facilities and operations. Mayor Jamieson said reaching this stage of the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm project had been a culmination of years of hard work and he was proud to be onsite to celebrate the significant milestone. “Council is striving to become Australia’s most sustainable region and our Sunshine Coast Solar Farm at Valdora is part of a grand plan to achieve that vision,” Mayor Jamieson said. “The solar farm will see council proactively take control of our electricity supply to combat rising electricity costs, which are, on average, 14% higher in Queensland compared to last financial year. “The solar farm will deliver $22 million in savings, after costs, for our ratepayers over the next 30 years. Divisional and Economic Development and Innovation Portfolio Councillor Steve Robinson said Rowena Coghill, Downer’s Project Manager, visited the Trina Solar Factory in China in August to check the production of the panels and oversee their quality control process. “All up, about 15,000 screw piles will be installed in the ground to hold the tables above the flood plain. It takes 10 piles to hold up one table of 40 panels, or 12 piles for a corner table. “Each 20m x 4m aluminium table is craned into place with a locally designed lifting jig, developed specifically for the project. “In the last few weeks, the crew has been load testing the lifting jig and undertaken a few practice runs to make sure everything is in place to begin production this week. “Two crews using 100 tonne cranes will install about 25 tables each day. “Weather dependent, all tables should be up by Christmas.” The solar farm is expected to be operational by mid-2017.
Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc. The birds are back!
We care about our environment
Spring is here and the birds are back. If you doubt that, all you need to do is find a quiet spot in the bush somewhere and be still. Sometimes it takes a while to stop being a threat, but wait and listen. You will hear any or all of the following; chirping, twittering, churring, whistling, screeching, cheeping, cooing, crying and so many other sounds that are indescribable. After winter, when so many of our birds travel to other places, it’s like welcoming old friends back. Some, however, maybe are not so welcome especially if you have a Storm bird (Eastern Koel) nesting outside of your bedroom window! Each year, on our property, we see birds that we have not seen previously; one of the rewards of having a wide range of local native trees, shrubs and grasses. We have recently installed a couple of bird baths close to the bush, hoping that we will get to see more of the shy, reclusive birds that we now only hear. If you are the curious type and need to know which bird is making the sound, there are a range of resources to help with identification. I use the ‘Aus Birds’ app by Morcombe and Stewart and find it most helpful. It gives descriptions, plays the calls and allows me to keep track of my sightings. I wonder what new birds will cross our paths this year? Just gotta love the bush!

Piggy banks making a difference Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) thanks the people of Maleny and tourists, for slipping their loose change into the piggy banks placed in local Maleny businesses. Anne Delmas from MNC says businesses in town have raised hundreds of dollars for the centre just by placing these piggy banks on their counters and encouraging people to donate loose change. “We are very grateful and thank the local businesses for their assistance,” she said. “We would also like to thank Maleny Credit Union as it was their initiative and they provide us with the piggy banks as we need them.” “MNC works to reduce hardships in our local area and is committed to supporting community. We need to raise more than $120,000 per year to keep the doors of the centre open. While some of this money comes from room hire, the rest is generated from membership, fundraising and donations. “This is where community support is very important. We believe that good health is about give and take and MNC aims to be the kind of organisation that you are happy to support, so while you are busy, MNC can help the people that need help.” If you are around town and see these piggy banks, please consider donating. If you are in business and would like to have a piggy bank at your business, please call MNC 5499 9345 to arrange it. Alternatively you can go to www. malenync.org.au/donateMNC to donate. All donations above $2.00 are fully tax deductible.

You Said It Re: Mr Giles response
Mr Giles (GC&M News October 12) makes a cardinal error in his letter by not using peerreviewed, published scientific papers when making his argument, thus disqualifying himself. Taking his quoted papers one by one: ‘Electropathic Stress in Animals and Man’ — this is an unpublished monograph by one Donald Hillman, a long-retired animal scientist. So that paper carries absolutely no weight. Regarding ‘Bird Collisions with Telecom Equipment’ — again, this is another unpublished study by yet another retired academic. Once again, we cannot base scientific or technical arguments on unpublished essays written by retired academics, often speculating in fields (e.g. radiation) in which they were never qualified. One is reminded of the long-retired academics who pooh-pooh global warming in similarly unpublished diatribes. So while Mr Giles exhorts us to be ‘up on the latest science’, he himself uses data that does not qualify as science to support his spurious argument. I could go on, but this is probably enough to show that Mr Giles's arguments are flawed. Now readers can see why governments the world over are not tearing down transmission towers and banning mobile phones. The reason is that the prognosticators of doom rely on pseudoscience to make their arguments. Here in the Hinterland, we should not let our future be held to ransom by a small cabal of tinfoil hat wearers. Gerry Muller Maleny
Transport what transport?
I have noticed that we, the residents of Glass House Mountains, have been paying a Transport Levy in our rates for some years. We are not provided with this service. I have questioned the council about this and their response is that we will be provided with the service in the fullness of time. I resent paying for a service that we don’t have, what about the other residents of Glass House? Are you willing to pay for a service that you don’t get? Bob Malcolm Glass House Mountains

What a night
On Thursday night, October 6, after Ted and I retired for the night, and while I was just dozing off, I felt something move across my arm. I quickly flinched my arm hoping to get rid of whatever it was. I decided to check on what it could have been, so I turned on the bedside light, stepped out of bed, looked around for the offender and there it was. Less than a metre away was a ‘brown snake’ coiled and ready to strike. I hastily called out to Ted who’d already fallen asleep. Eventually he understood I was telling him we had a ‘SNAKE’ in the bedroom with us. After ascertaining “yes, we did have a snake sharing our bedroom” he leapt into action and returned from the kitchen with a large metal baking dish lid which he dropped down over the agitated snake. Once the snake was covered safely with the lid, he carefully slid the lid onto the centre of the bedside rug and then placed a heavy weight on top. He took hold of two corners on the rug and very cautiously began to drag it towards the front door which I’d already opened. Once close enough to the doorway he gave a quick vigorous flick of the rug and both snake and lid went hurtling out onto the patio where it quickly recoiled and resumed a striking pose. It isn’t everyday one shares their bed with a snake, but I’m so thankful I ‘flicked’ my arm rather than hit out with my other hand, as this story could have ended quite differently. We suspect it could have been an Eastern Brown but we’re not certain. After all that ‘excitement’ it took awhile to settle and return to sleep. Certainly I don’t wish for another exciting episode, so in future will be checking all screen doors to make sure they are closed securely! Eunice Prickett Peachester

Re: letter from Olive Hockings
At the least, Sunshine Coast Council, Fraser Coast Council, Queensland Education Department and the NSW State Planning have specified minimum distance that telecommunications towers should be from residences and sensitive areas. This has to be based on some concerns relating to the emissions from these towers. Towerless NBN group has found many references from around the world in which concern is raised and results from tests demonstrate the need for serious concern. I would be willing to provide Olive Hockings with these references. The Sunshine Council Planning Scheme contains siting criteria relating to scenic amenity within our region. In her letter, Olive Hockings submitted that she would object about things that may affect wildlife within reserves and National Parks – but she is not a resident there or probably living nearby. In the same breath she raises opposition to legitimate objections under the Planning Scheme by others. The objections raised against the various towers ensure that the council is able to have support in the maintenance of its Planning Scheme throughout its region. I need this consistent approach so that if a proposal is lodged close to my place (NBN has already been nearby on Howell’s Knob), I can be confident that the council will provide the same response as given to the Beerwah, Hunchy, Eudlo and Glass House Mountains proposals which did not meet the Sunshine Coast Council Planning Scheme. It should also be noted that each tower is part of a network and is generally not a stand-alone entity. Many people who live near the proposed sites do not have the knowledge about the lodgement of objections to proposals that are not wanted. They want NBN but not via microwave towers. I have found that the assistance by others towards addressing their plight is generally welcomed. The increasing costs for NBN are from apparent failings within Government and NBN. Could an offset home loan help you get debt free faster? Paying off a home loan as fast as possible is usually the most desirable option for most Australians. After all, the sooner you become debtfree, the sooner you'll be able to get your finances back on track and begin working towards your next big investment. There are a wide range of different options and facilities available to home loan borrowers that can be used to make the burden of repayments a little more manageable in the long run, and can even help to reduce your mortgage length if used correctly. 24
|
|
OCTOBER 19 2016
For example, one of the major components of making home loan repayments is the interest involved. Depending on the economic conditions of Australia at the time you took out your mortgage, as well as the type of home loan you chose, your interest rate will have an influence over the size of your repayment amounts.
Funds you have in your account are offset against your loan balance. As a result, this reduces the amount of interest you pay overall.
However, it could be worth discussing the option of adding an offset account to your home loan, which can help to dramatically lower your overall repayment scheme.
This has very clear benefits from the beginning and could be a fantastic option to consider for those with a high level of income or established savings.
Contact Teresa today for expert mortgage advice and service.
If you had a home loan with an overall balance of $500,000 and an offset account attached with a balance of $50,000, you would only be charged interest on $450,000 rather than your full home loan amount.

around its core business of financial planning and superannuation and have negotiated with W.D. Hall Accountants to take over the accounting and taxation business of its Beerwah office. Naturally, existing clients can choose whether they continue with W.D. Hall Accountants at the Beerwah office, or manage their own tax affairs. The Principal Jens Staermose has over 30 years of accounting and taxation, as well as business advisory experience, in Australia and brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge to his practice. He is both a certified practicing accountant (CPA) and chartered tax advisor (CTA), the peak designation available to tax professionals in Australia. A local Hinterland resident himself; since moving to the Sunshine Coast in 2010, Jens and his wife Madeleine (who works in the Mooloolah office) are proud to be a locally family owned and operated business. With the firm’s mission statements of ‘pragmatic advice, worldly vision’, and ‘a keen pair of eyes for your financial needs’, Jens brings extensive experience and comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of accounting practice and wealth creation to his business. Additional strengths of the business include a highly efficient use of client records and information that allows for minimised client data entry and the use of up-to-the-minute cloud based accounting technology (XERO). The firm’s accountants are Xero certified, but are also proficient in other accounting software
applications such as MYOB, Quickbooks and Cashflow Manager. “I see great potential in Beerwah and I believe that local ownership will be positive for clients. Business hours will remain the same at the Beerwah office and we are committed to providing an uninterrupted service of the highest standard to clients who choose to remain with us. I am very much looking forward to meeting our Beerwah clients,” says Jens. W.D Hall Accountants are now additionally located at 9 / 21 Peachester Road, Beerwah, and the office is open from Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm. For more information, Jens invites existing and potential clients to drop into the Beerwah office or call 5494 0566, or see more at www.wdhall.com.au

School News New Principal at Mooloolah Morcombe’s three ‘Rs’ of staying safe
Students, parents and staff have welcomed their new principal Mr Adam Poulus to Mooloolah State School for the start of Term 4. The students were very excited to meet the new principal when he arrived his first day. He was seen welcoming students and families at the front gate and was also playing handball and basketball with the students. Adam is from Ulladulla NSW, and comes to the school with 10 years’ experience as a principal with Education Queensland. He has taught in many places, including rural, regional, remote and inner city schools. He has also taught in the UK and loves sport, his favourite sports are cricket and rugby league. Adam and his wife Susan, have three children, one of which will be attending Mooloolah State School. The students are very keen to see his sporting skills and the vision he has for our wonderful school. Adam believes that Mooloolah State School is a beautiful place and looks forward to building on the success that is already in place. With Adam’s experience, clear expectations and routines within schools and establishing excellent community and staff relationships, we are in great hands. He has met many people already and looks forward to meeting more families and community members throughout the term.

Contributed by Sandy Johnson Schools are used to hearing about the ‘three Rs’ but it usually refers to ‘reading, writing and ‘rithmetic’. However, when Bruce and Denise Morcombe spoke to about 300 primary students at Glasshouse Christian College, they had a completely different set of three Rs in mind. The Morcombes taught GCC students the three Rs of staying safe; recognise, react and report. Students were encouraged to recognise their body signals if they don’t feel safe, react by running away or finding a safe place or person and report the incident to a trusted person. Staff and students at Glasshouse Christian
College have always had a special spot for the Morcombes but one of the first things Bruce Morcombe said to the gathered students was, “we don’t want you to be sad for us, we want you to learn important things that will help keep you safe.” The church was a sea of red as GCC celebrated Daniel Morcombe Day a little earlier this year to raise money for the Foundation. Primary Captains Daemon Cruise and Olivia Ellis presented a cheque to Bruce and Denise who in return presented gifts of caps, an autographed book and signs with the three Rs on them.

Living become visitors New tourism venture for Brandenberg Road Volunteers Each month Maleny Visitors Information Centre volunteers participate in
A Material Change of Use application has been received by Sunshine Coast Council to build new tourism accommodation on a property at Mooloolah / Bald Knob. The owners of the existing bed and breakfast enterprise – known as Highwood Park, at 316 Brandenberg Road – are looking to compliment their guest lodge with eight nature-based tourism accommodation cabins. The application is needed as the land is zoned Rural. The planning report states that the design of the proposal is sympathetic to the natural features of the site including geography and orientation, and that the proposal reflects the existing character of the surrounding area and will not diminish the amenity of surrounding properties. The existing waterway streams will not be altered or negatively impacted by the proposed development. No vegetation will be cleared to cater for the proposed use. To read more about the proposal, go to www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au and search for MCU16/0230.
Photography Corner with the U3A Grafx Group
Photography by Graeme Lean Some members of the Beerwah Grafx group recently participated in a photoshoot afternoon with Rick Sherwin and the lovely model Anneli. This image was taken on the balcony behind the Beerwah Community Hall in natural light. The data is 1/640 sec at f2.8 and ISO 200 using a 105mm lens on a Nikon D800. The highlighted areas of Anneli's face and hands formed a graceful S curve so Graeme converted the image to black and white to draw emphasis to this.

Enjoying a day of gaining information
Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley We are getting ready for our busy season here in the visitor centre, increased visitor numbers and last week we had had two days with not one local visitor - it makes for such an interesting day! We held a successful morning tea to recruit volunteers in our Glasshouse Visitor and Interpretive Centre. On average a volunteer would do three to four hour shifts with many volunteers opting to come in once a week but others fortnightly. We have a wide variety of ages and experience, and those joining are usually surprised by what they do know about the area they call home. The centre has in recent weeks updated a number of local walks and tours, with the Hinterland offering a fresh new look to their walk brochures and National Parks introducing a great new range of informative brochures. If you are a keen walker or have visitors, come in and see us and have a look at what we have. If you are interested in volunteering with us, it is a very worthwhile and rewarding experience, please contact me via email Bev.dooley@ visitsunshinecoast.com. Or you can call into the centre, say hello and pick up an application form.
The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information centre is located at Settler's Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains and is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 4.00pm

Get set for Melbourne Cup
Melbourne Cup
This year, fashionistas are touting pastel tones or bold colour blocking, as the way to be on-trend this Melbourne Cup Day. But the Beerwah Kindergarten's Melbourne Cup fundraiser lunch is throwing the latest and greatest out of the window in favour of a fun and funky retro dress code. The November 1 event will see the Beerwah Hotel taken back to the rocking '50s and ‘60s with a suggested dress code that includes bright rockabilly frocks, form-fitting pencil dresses and Jeff caps for the gents. The retro theme will be celebrated with a fashion parade unlike anything the Beerwah Hotel has seen before, sponsored by Poison Kandy Klothing and Memorabilia. Poison Kandy stylist Cassie Vortman, who will be selecting the outfits for the parade, said retro was becoming a popular day-to-day style choice for people of all ages. "It's a style that is very feminine and looks very pretty but is also very comfortable to wear," she said. "There is a huge variation in styles of that era from sleek-fitting pencil dresses and high shoes to flowing, full skirts and swing dresses so it can suit any body shape." Cat’s eyes, red lipstick and great hair styles will complete the look. For the men, Cassie recommends thinking outside the square in the suit department and looking at classic greys teamed up with suspenders to complete the look. For event and booking details see next column.

Health, Beauty
&Wellbeing Live well, live stress-free
Navigating through life with less stress is never an easy task, but it’s an important one. Reducing levels of stress can significantly improve your overall health and wellbeing, leaving you happier, more energised and able to enjoy all aspects of life. When you start to experience feelings of stress or anxiety, caused by a physical or emotional change, it’s important to know how to manage these. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift shares five ways to get started. 1. Get active: Fitness is one of the most well-known coping techniques for stress, recommended by health professionals. Studies show that exercise is very effective at reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and enhancing overall cognitive function. When your body feels better, so will your mind.
Acupuncture
2. Switch off early: Getting sufficient sleep allows your brain to recharge and your body to rest. Many studies show that sleep is so crucial that even slight deprivation can contribute to poor health and affect memory, judgement and mood. Set yourself a bed time each night and stick to it – you’ll wake up feeling fresh and ready for the day ahead. 3. Call a friend: Spending quality time with friends and family can make a big difference to your mindset. Meaningful interaction can improve wellbeing by generating positive thoughts and help you gain a fresh perspective on stressful situations. Whether you meet a friend for coffee, curl up on the couch with a family member, or simply chat on the phone – share your load with someone who cares. 4. Meditate: Practising mindfulness techniques or meditating can clear your mind and help ease psychological stresses like anxiety, depression, and pain. Meditation gives you tools to focus your mind
and attention on the present moment and become aware of different sensations, like breathing. Pick a quiet spot at home or in a nearby park and take some time each day to meditate quietly. 5. Eat healthy food: If you’re experiencing stress or irritability, it’s tempting to gravitate toward unhealthy foods for an energy boost. But be warned, this usually does more harm than good. The right nutrition contributes to maintaining a healthy weight, better quality of life, good physical and mental health throughout life, resistance to infection, and protection against chronic disease and premature death. One of the best ways to find inner harmony is to get your daily dose of two serves of fruit and five serves of fresh veggies. Finally, when you’re facing stressful situations and feelings of anxiety, remember to keep things in perspective. For more information about Cancer Council Queensland, visit cancerqld.org.au or phone 13 11 20.

Based on the Aboriginal knowledge of the laws of LORE and the understanding that all things in nature are alive, HK is not likened to any other therapy. How does it work? By clearing trauma locked in events, thoughts and emotions from the past that are continually affecting the present and impacting the possibilities for the future. It is not Hypnosis. HK looks at the body as a whole, accessing cellular memory passed down from generations causing us to continue repeating the cycles of life patterns within their own dimension of time, which we have become stuck in. Who can be helped? If your Body Feels Better, so Does your Mind!
Stress is an inevitable part of each of our lives, with most of us experiencing some form of stress or anxiety daily. It can really interfere in our day to day activities and can be detrimental to our health and wellbeing. While stress can be hard to eliminate entirely, it can be managed and one of the best ways is through exercise. While it has long been proven that exercise is essential for preventing disease and improving your physical condition, it is also very important in maintaining mental health. When we exercise our body produces those ‘feel good’ chemicals called endorphins, which act as natural pain killers therefore reducing stress. It has been shown that regular exercise of low to moderate intensity can help reduce tension, stabilise mood and reduce anxiety. If you need help getting started come in and see the team at Plus Fitness Beerwah. Our qualified personal trainers can tailor a program specific to your health and fitness goals.

Next month sees a relaunch of the iconic venue with a push to re-establish itself as the main Blues venue in the region, a title which it had earned in the not too distant past. The best local and touring Blues acts from around the country and overseas will be invited to play the monthly Blues night which takes place on the second Saturday of every month. The pub has also undergone renovations of its main bar, bistro and sports bar to be more punter friendly and open the space up to allow larger crowds to watch the heightened array of bands bound for the Coast. The next few months will feature Doc Span, Adam Hole Band and Mason Rack amongst others, all national festival acts in their own right. The venue has also teamed up with local agency Beats Cartel, known for putting on quality line ups each week all over Queensland. Pub owner Rick Gazzard says of the reinvigorated Blues push: "Palmwoods Hotel has always been the home of the Blues on the Sunny Coast for me, so it’s great to have it back in our fantastic new surroundings which we've worked hard to bring you all.” Head in and check out the newly renovated Palmwoods Hotel. For more information, contact the pub on 5445 9003.

Love and Friendship (according to Jane Austen) The Saturday, October 22 film screening in Maleny Community Centre will be a pleasant surprise for Jane Austen fans, who will be reminded of the author’s talent for humour, set within social satire of her time. ‘Love and Friendship’, a witty comedy of manners from US director Whit Stillman set in England’s aristocracy in the 18th century, is based on an early Austen novella called Lady Susan. Stillman’s adaptation of that novella borrows Jane’s plot (with his own additions), using the title of another of Jane’s novellas for his 21st century film. Kate Beckinsale, who previously played the Austen heroine Emma Woodhouse in Emma, plays flirtatious young widow Lady Susan Vernon, bent on marrying off her daughter Frederica and herself to wealthy husbands. Chloe Sevigny plays Alicia, Lady Susan’s confidante, allowing the audience to eavesdrop on the pair’s surprisingly racy interchanges. Christopher Fry appears in a cameo role as Alicia’s husband and Tom Bennett is delightfully doddery as an unwitting bachelor in this stylishly costumed period production. Doors open at 6.00pm for dinner catered by Lumbini Nepalese restaurant, with screening at 7.15pm. Members of the Maleny Film Society may pre-book on-line or via the Maleny Information Centre. Membership can also be initiated or renewed on-line. Drinks available; also tea and coffee with homemade treats. Check the website: www.malenyfilmsociety.info

Veggie Notes Perpetual spinach
This version of Silverbeet seems to do better in our subtropical climate than many others, and is known for its long production season – hence the name ‘perpetual’. Perpetual spinach is something like a mix between Silverbeet and English spinach – in so much as it has largish leaves and bears prolifically like Silverbeet, but the leaves have a softer texture and milder flavour like English spinach. Another plus is that it doesn’t go to seed as readily as Silverbeet as the weather heats up. Prepare the soil by digging through organic matter and rotted manure or chook manure pellets. By adding some potash, you will give the plant a boost, as potash is great for leafy greens. Perpetual spinach is easily grown from seed – packets of which are readily available – and germination is much better now that the air temperature (and consequently the soil temperature) is rising. Start by raising about six or so seedlings in a container. Once they are about 5-10cm high, they can easily be transplanted into the garden or larger pots. Plant about 30-40cm apart to give them plenty of space to fill out. Side-dress with some blood and bone and in about 8-10 weeks you’ll be picking leaves. Use the ‘twist and sideways pull’ technique to harvest the leaves, which doesn’t damage the main stem. Regular harvesting will keep the plant producing fresh leaves – something which it will do for up to two years. After that, I find it best to renew them. Nitrogen is another important nutrient, so make sure your fertilising regime is regular and suited to leafy greens. There are the normal pests to be wary of – grasshoppers, snails, slugs and other herbivorous critters – so taking the usual precautions is advisable. It is resistant to downy mildew, which can sometimes be a problem for Silverbeet. Just as an insurance policy, germinate some new plants at the threemonth mark, just in case a few of the originals don’t make it. Perpetual spinach can be used in any way that either Silverbeet or English spinach is – so it’s a versatile kitchen food plant. If your supply outstrips your capacity to eat it, they can be chopped, blanched and frozen in small packages to be used in stews, soups, pasta sauces or my favourite Indian dish, Saag Paneer. Alternatively, chooks just can’t get enough of them, so turn the excess into eggs. We all know that spinach contains iron (ain’t that right Popeye), but it generally comes down the list after vitamins A and C, thiamine, potassium and folic acid (one of the B complex vitamins). All leafy greens, like Perpetual Spinach also contain carotenoids, which are strong antioxidants.
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network
Plant of the Month
Grass Trigger Plant
Stylidium graminifolium This delightful little plant can be seen flowering in moist sandy or rocky areas of the Glass House Mountains area, but is also common in other states and as far as the north of this state. A hardy species, Trigger Plant will happily grow in full sun or shade and due to the small size, is suitable for most home gardens. The leaves form a grass like rosette at the base of the plant which may not be obvious in the natural habitat until Spring, when the slender spikes of pink orchid-like flowers appear. The name Trigger Plant derives from the interesting process of pollination. Insects visiting the flowers stimulate a ‘trigger’ on the plants which springs up hitting the insects and releasing pollen onto them! What a clever way of ensuring species survival! Growing to a maximum height of 80cm even when in flower, Trigger Plants are suitable for growing in containers.

At our last meeting, we bid a sad farewell to Cath and Gordon Howitt, who are moving to a retirement village on Bribie Island and Jenny Wellsteed who is also moving. President Coral Beutel presented Jenny with a potted plant for her new garden and a beautiful flower arrangement for Cath and Gordon (pictured). Sally Joyce spoke briefly about the forest walk at the Peachester State School and progress of the kitchen school garden. We hope to enjoy a stroll through the forest walk after the next meeting. The Society decided to present a donation to the school to help with the gardening classes. With Cath leaving, Pam Innes has agreed to take on the competition bench duties. Results of the competition bench for August: 1st Gordon Howitt 19 points, 2nd Trish Bradford 15 points. Our members combined have an incredible knowledge of all aspects of gardening, so please come along and join us for our next meeting on Thursday, October 20 at Peachester Hall from 9.30am. Renovating 'The Block' of my life
Our house is chaos right now. Why you ask? Simply put, renovating! If you're anything like me, I love watching renovation shows. Being spoilt for choice, 'The Block' is a family favourite and a must watch every week. What I love about renovation shows, is the demolition of the old to create something new. We have started our renovation with our kitchen, the ‘heart of the home’. In the 80's our kitchen was the height of hip, a lovely shade of mushroom pink cabinets with matching pink tiles. Thankfully after renovation, our kitchen is a fresh white and grey colour scheme. Like our kitchen, things in our life date. In Ephesians 4:23 it says, ‘Be made new in the attitude of your minds’. Be made new means to renovate. Like any good renovation, it is a process that begins first with demo day (or D day), a chosen day in your life where demolition of the old begins to make way for the new. If you want your life, your job, or your relationships to change, you have to start thinking differently (new). C
The same old thought patterns and limiting beliefs will get you the same results. The first step to being made 'new' is to demolish the old in your life in order to renovate the attitudes of your mind. These can take form in old lies that you've believed for too many years, old values and beliefs that have shaped your behaviour and how you see the world. For building our lives, God has given us the Bible - you can see this like a builder's master plan. From the plan we can evaluate ourselves, our choices, our decisions, our thoughts, and our actions to see how they align with the plan. Do you want to start thinking differently? Is it time to knock down some walls in your life? Today might be your Demo day. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

San Grading
San held our term three grading in late September with over 40 students attending from the Beerwah, Maleny and Kenilworth clubs to test for their new belts. Grading involves students performing basic kicking, punching, blocking and footwork drills as well as hitting targets and performing a set pattern of defence and attack moves called poomsae. Higher ranked students are also required to display their sparring ability, break timber and demonstrate self-defence skills from various attacks. It was great to see a diverse range of students from the many families training together. The youngest grading student was five-years-old and the oldest over 60. Overall the standard was very high and it's great to see students developing on their way to black belt. The best grading award was presented to Myles Owen for the White/Yellow grading and Emma Hall for the Blue/Red Belt grading. San training centre hold grading once per term and they are open for public viewing. For more
information, please call 0437 571 540 or visit www.santkd.com
Brisbane Open
Six athletes from San Training Centre recently competed at the Brisbane Open Taekwondo Championships. The team had great results finishing with three gold and three silver medals. Gold medals were won by Cameron Taylor in the Open Heavyweight division and Reuben Tidy took home two gold after winning in separate divisions. Liam Riley, Joey Mortimer and Joshua Collins all represented the team proudly unfortunately all losing in the finals to claim silver medals. Head Instructor Norm Taylor was also awarded a special award for the best referee of the competition. Although students compete as individuals our club code is to ensure the fighters and coaching staff at San all work as a team to support each other both in training and competition. To keep up-to-date visit www.santkd.com or Facebook san training centre.

Just for Laughs What a thoughtful bunch
The Irish are a wonderful bunch of people, always willing to help in a pinch. Shortly after take-off on an outbound evening Air Lingus flight from Dublin to Boston, the lead flight attendant nervously made the following painful announcement in her lovely Irish brogue. "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm so very sorry, but it appears that there has been a terrible mix-up by our catering service. I don't know how this has happened, but we have 103 passengers on board, and unfortunately, we received only 40 dinner meals. I truly apologise for this mistake and inconvenience. When the muttering of the passengers had died down, she continued, "anyone who is kind enough to give up their meal so that someone else can eat, will receive free, unlimited drinks for the duration of our
five hour flight." Her next announcement came about two hours later: "If anyone is hungry, we still have 40 dinners available."
If I die first
My wife has days when she wants us to ‘talk about things’. We were discussing aspects of our future, so when it was my turn I asked her "what will you do if I die before you do?” After some thought, she said that she'd probably look for a house-sharing situation with three other single or widowed women who might be a little younger than herself, since she is so active for her age. Then she asked me, "what will you do if I die first?" I replied, “probably the same thing." Peter Dodwell Glass House Mountains

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 More bright ideas and possibilities can be worked out for you this week, and may even prove lucky. As you are a visionary, you can be onto something that is actually quite practical, so it pays to think big! The weekend should see everything back on an even keel and an older person can play a part in this. Unexpected travel. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Luck will be on your side this week, thanks to a lovely fortunate Jupiter and the Moon. So there are planets that are guiding you into one of those right places at the right time. If you have an olive branch of peace to extend to those that are depressed, then this is the time to do it. Mercury and Jupiter will see to it reconciliations go well. ARIES March 21 – April 20 There will be shortage of opinions this week, as there will have been a full Moon in the sign of Aries, opposite the Sun sign in Libra. Different views can escalate into a battleground, but only if you let it. The Full Moon, being in Aries, does make things very exciting for a couple of weeks, as new people arrive for surprises. TAURUS April 21 – May 22 It’s time to make things nice with people you have not spoken with for a long time. Perhaps you cannot remember exactly why! So pick up the phone. This reconciliation needs to be done personally under your current stars. Do not text or email. The Full Moon energies are urging you to spill the beans re a long held secret.
GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Under the Full Moon auspices, namely Arian energies, let your dreams and visions fuel your worldly ambitions. Suppositions and assumptions are no substitute for hard facts. Illusions of the future may cause depression because you have not arrived at that point and you are only playing games with your imagination. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Someone in your immediate family may have a surprise for you and you won’t mind one little bit! Perhaps you are feeling lucky, there is no time like the present week to take a chance. Don’t increase your mortgage but a scratch ticket or lotto may be in order. Do not put off making any tough decisions; just get it done. LEO July 23 – August 22 Plans from last September may come up for review and adjustment. That was when Mercury was retrograde. Now it’s picking up speed and going direct, you will receive what you need. Also, give thought to enlisting help and cooperation. Safe guard personal information and passwords. Protect credit cards. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Your intuition is now running on high so if your instincts tell you what sounds like a perfectly good idea, listen to it. But remember there is no reason to rush impulsively into a commitment. People in authority want to lend a helping hand. Accept help now, as this week it may be necessary. Plan A and Plan B are both working well this week.

Week beginning 19/10/2016 LIBRA September 23 – October 22 You can find the right approach for making plans for your home and your partner. This may mean you acquire an item that you have been visualising for some time. Your mind is therefore sharp this week, but so might be your tongue. Of course everybody knows you are exceptionally opinionated, but that only lasts for few days. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You need to pay attention to what is going on around you as the stars are sending along a ‘care package’ packed with emotional goodies. Perhaps if you need to renegotiate or compromise don’t wait a moment longer. This week is the week to do it! Get on the phone, call everybody involved, and talk them into getting together. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 There is a shift in perspective because of the recent Full Moon and one that you should embrace for any change or renewal of your life, that it can bring. You should not hesitate to stand your ground if there is a challenge dealing with some people. However, it is also worth remembering that compromise for the sake of unity helps. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Getting a senior to finally realise just how much you are worth may come easily this week. Therefore, if you are waiting on a raise, bonus, promotion, or a kind word from your father, then make an application or request a get together. Your mission, should you care to accept it, is to find a way to straighten things out with authority.
