Hi Everyone... Nearly every week of the year at GC&M News we put a newspaper together and deliver it into your letterboxes, which is totally a ‘team effort’ by a great group of people. Today even more than usual I am reminded of what a great team of dedicated staff we have, as we mourn the loss of one of our own - Shane Old. Shane has been delivering the paper with us for more than a decade. He is someone that I would describe as a really nice bloke, you would hear him when he was in the office, he was always happy to have a chat, often giving me news tips or sharing a joke with the rest of the team. However what I reckon I admired most about Shane was that he was obviously interested in and cared about other people, he listened to them, he helped them out. He was the kind of fella who just got on with things and got the job done we are really fortunate to have known him and worked with him. Thanks Shane for being one of the good guys.

Cover Story Magic weekend for Maleny netball! While the Sunshine Coast Lightning girls are leading the way in the National Netball League it seems the local Maleny girls had some netball magic of their own going on this season. At last Saturday’s Caloundra Netball Association’s grand finals Maleny came away with wins in the four divisions in which their teams qualified. Not surprisingly Maleny supporters were out in full force cheering on the teams. Maleny Netball Association president Kerri Leddin said it was a great that four of the five Maleny competitive teams had secured spots in the grand finals, and it was a huge achievement for all four teams to come away with a win. It was a nail-biting game for the U11 Galaxies who managed a 19-18 win over the PLC Palominos, with the winning goal being scored in the final seconds.

07 5494 0666

The U12 Jedis also had a close match, only pulling away in the last quarter to win against the Moffat Beach Seashells 31-27. The Division 7 Superjets celebrated a 26-19 win over Unity Bellvista Wattles and the Division 4 Cosmics won their game convincingly against the Pacific Starlings with a score of 31-19. “The Maleny netball club is one of the smallest clubs in the district, so it goes to show that we may be small but we are mighty,” Kerri said. The association gave a huge thank you to all the coaches for the time and effort they have put in this season and to all the players for always giving 100%.

Local News Cat motel for Beerburrum A new cattery is being planned for Beerburrum, with a development application lodged with Sunshine Coast Council last week. The proposal, to be located at 50 Tibrogargan Drive (on the corner of Tibrogargan Drive and Steve Irwin Way), will house 100 cats when stage two is completed. The property – owned by Vicki Shaw and Darryl Inglis – is currently zoned rural and used as a residence only, so a material change of use application is needed to allow for the cattery. The planning report submitted to council suggests there will be minimal noise issues, with cats being quiet animals, and disposal of any waste generated was planned to be part of normal

household rubbish collection service. An existing shed will be used, with plans to expand and more than double the current footprint over time. The cattery will consist of 24 luxury suites, 40 cat boxes (one on top of another), ten outside pens, a ‘play area’, and two ‘prep rooms’, each consisting of four quarantine boxes. The report said the proposed development would be owned and operated by Vicki Shaw and Darryl Inglis, who have historically had experience operating catteries elsewhere. Hum Honey is the best It’s official. Peachester business Hum Honey has the best new Australian–made product in the country. Hum Honey COLD FUSION® won the Australian Made Award category in the Best New Products Awards at the Fine Food Australia expo held at the Melbourne Convention Centre earlier this month. Competing against 400 other products, the local honey was recognised as the most outstanding product to have launched in the food industry in the past 12 months. Unlike standard honey production, the cold infusion process allows for the introduction of sensational flavours into the pure raw honey.

Hum Honey introduced a range of flavours into the honey, including lavender, lemon myrtle, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla and even a fabulous truffle honey using Tasmania truffles. Showcasing ground-breaking techniques and harnessing the flavours of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Hum Honey produced a honey that was unlike any other. Sunshine Coast Councillor Jenny McKay said Fine Food Australia was a world class event, and to have Hum Honey win this award was fabulous news for the region. “Australia is one of the top ten honey producing countries in the world, with a large amount of honey produced in Australia exported to a variety of overseas countries in both bulk and retail shipments,” Cr McKay said. Hum Honey founder and ‘Bee Girl’, Leisa Sams, said to receive the award was a real honour. “Bees are my passion, and to have the opportunity to share my love of honey with the world is so exciting,” she said. “We started our boutique honey business in Peachester and we now have the opportunity to build an international business from an idyllic location. “Plus it’s the perfect place for the bees. There is subtropical rainforest and open forest hardwoods - the bees are in paradise! “My bees are never treated with any chemicals, pesticides or antibiotics and only organic, natural beekeeping methods are used.

Leisa Sam with her award Hum Honey COLD FUSION® “I am proud to bring you pure, raw honey straight from the bees to you. “I try to capture the flavours of the Sunshine Coast in every jar and I think this is one of reasons why we won,” Leisa said.

Dave wins gold

Glasshouse Country bowlers David Hayes and Phil Siggers both took home medals from the recent 2018 Bowls Queensland Multi-Disability State Championships held at Chermside. The competition saw David play five games of singles 21 up. He won all games, including the fifth when he came from 16-9 down to win 2117 and make the gold medal match. Following the competition David said he was very happy and proud of what he had achieved, explaining that he had to play some unbelievable bowls to make this happen. “I think it was one of the hardest things I have

ever done but it was so worth it,” David said. “Thanks for all the support and to those who came to watch.” Great work by Phil Siggers saw him pick up a bronze medal in the singles and a silver in the pairs in the life stream section. This year bowlers competed in 10 separate titles across four different categories which include blind bowlers, life stream, sporting wheelies and hard of hearing.

Peachester State School is celebrating the success of one of its talented and dedicated teachers, James Duffy, who was recently awarded the Supervising Secondary, Primary or Early Childhood Teacher Award at the University of the Sunshine Coast (SCU) Annual Initial Teacher Education Awards. James was nominated by USC student Stacey Sanders after her practical teaching experience at Peachester State School in 2017. Stacey wrote about James’ great understanding

of how students learn and how to teach the appropriate content. She said that as a teacher he took the time to get to know all his students and established an understanding of how each and every one of them learn and catered to this. James was effective in establishing a safe and supportive work environment for students and staff. Stacey emphasised how impressed she was by the professionalism he showed when engaging with colleagues, parents, carers and the community. “By watching James work, going above and beyond for staff and students, enabled me to gain an understanding of what an educator should quote – ‘look like’," Stacey said.

Glenview waterpark still in court Although all plans for the $450 million longawaited water park (called ‘Actventure’) in Glenview have been approved by Sunshine Coast Council, the developer, Sanad Capital, continues to dispute the amount of stormwater infrastructure charges imposed by council. An appeal before the Planning and Environment Court has progressed slightly, with the Sanad legal team recently asking – and receiving – a court adjournment until after June 1, 2019. According to Sanad’s legal submission, the approved application to realign the land parcel boundaries allows for part of the development to become a tourism accommodation park next to the water park. However, it says the stormwater management implications over the site will change when detailed plans for the tourism park are submitted. “It would be impractical to proceed in the circumstances until the new application is lodged and determined,” the court application said. The application said if the matter was not adjourned, it could cause unnecessary financial burden on both parties. “The appellants require the adjournment to allow time for the proposed application to be lodged and resolved,” it said. An affidavit filed on behalf of Bradley Philip Sutherland, a director of Sanad Capital, indicates that a development application detailing the tourism accommodation plans is well advanced.

“From my discussions with the various consultants involved in that application, I anticipate that it will take between four to seven months to prepare,” Mr Sutherland said in the affidavit. He estimates it will take council six to seven months to assess and decide that application, and that it will have financial implications on the water park plans. “I have been in discussions with potential financiers for the water park development. As a consequence of those discussions, I have concluded that Sanad’s ability to obtain funding for the water park will be improved if the tourist accommodation application is approved.” Sanad Capital has made no further public comments on the financial status of the project since announcing last April that a $30 million underwriting agreement has been secured with an Asian investment group. Sanad Capital was contacted for comment.

Community News Taking the initiative on suicide prevention

Glasshouse Country men of all ages and backgrounds are invited to participate in an important one-off event - the ‘About Blokes’ community forum on Wednesday, October 3 from 9am-12 noon at the Schools of Arts Memorial Hall, Landsborough. The forum facilitator and all speakers will be men and there will be hearty pizzas with some healthy fruit platters to help sustain the important conversation about the often ignored subject of men’s wellbeing and suicide. Merilyn Keene, coordinator with Hinterland and Sunshine Coast Suicide Prevention Network, says that attitude and upbringing often prevent men from acknowledging and accepting when they are experiencing something that needs treating. “Mental health is as real as physical health. They may not think it’s necessary to have at least an annual medical check-up, and believe that they can sort it out themselves,” Merilyn said. “They may not be comfortable with the idea of examinations or blood-letting or with talking about emotions such as long-term sadness and grief, stress, anger and loneliness. “Every life is precious and our communities need men to take the initiative and to reach out for help and look after each other as well as their families,” Merilyn said. According to Mindfame, the Australian Government’s National Media Initiative, suicide is the leading cause of death for 15-44 year olds in Australia, with the number of suicide deaths for males three times higher than for females. Glasshouse County also has a suicide prevention working group that meets at Henry & Co in Landsborough at 9.30am on the first Monday of the month. This group is active in encouraging physical and emotional wellbeing and connection in the local community. The group initiates local public awareness and education about suicide prevention. Contact Caloundra Community Centre on 5491 4000 for more information or RSVP by October 1 for the ‘About Blokes’ community forum. Lifeflight Razor Challenge

A group of 10 cyclists will push themselves to the limit on October 6 when they ride up a 5km segment of the Hunchy-Razorback Road, Montville, 23 times, with the accumulated ascents totalling 8,848 metres - the altitude of Mt Everest. It is anticipated the Lifeflight Razor Challenge will take 17-20 hours to complete and will raise funds for the Lifeflight rescue service. Lifeflight is a not-for-profit organisation that provides an emergency medical helicopter rescue service throughout Queensland, with a base located on the Sunshine Coast. Its critical care doctors and paramedics deliver medical care and transport for patients suffering serious traumatic injuries and medical emergencies. Each mission costs $12,500. However, this is a free service to the community that requires a proportion of its funding to come from charitable donations and fundraising events to keep its lifesaving helicopters in the air. With the recent spate of accidents on the Blackall Range and hinterland, the Sunshine Coast Lifeflight helicopter has been called in on a number of occasions, putting their lifesaving skills into action. Recently, attending a man injured as a result of an accident along Hunchy-Razorback Road, the chopper had to land on the Montville School playground. The cyclists in the Lifeflight Razor Challenge will be challenging themselves on arguably one the

Drought relief support

Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club has raised $7,000 through its district drought appeal in support of drought impacted farmers in western Queensland. President Chris Sang said funds collected from tins placed throughout Maleny, Montville, Mapleton, Flaxton and Witta were combined with around $3,000 donated by the Lions Club and another $2,000 donated by the club members, to a total donation of $12,000. As promised, 100% of the funds were forwarded in equal amounts to help drought-stricken families in the Charleville and Longreach areas. The Charleville Lions Club has had an ongoing project for some time where all monies received are converted into vouchers, which are claimable in local businesses. Similarly, in Longreach the Western Queensland Drought Appeal distributes prepaid debit cards

toughest, most brutal and extreme endurance cycling endeavours in the world to raise funds for the community lifesaving service. ‘Everesting’ (https://everesting.cc/) is a worldwide phenomenon and the Hunchy-Razorback climb will be listed in the Everesting hall of fame, alongside some of the most famous cycling climbs around the world. Brad Solomon, senior Lifeflight flight paramedic/ helicopter rescue crewman, event organiser and resident of Curramore, will be one of the riders taking on this massive challenge. The Lifeflight Razor Challenge has the generous support of the Montville Chamber of Commerce, Montville Village Hall, Chic & Sassy Boutique and Montville IGA Express.

and vouchers to landholders doing it tough to use in local businesses. This enables local businesses to receive a boost in conjunction with those on the land. Neither Charleville Lions nor Western Queensland Drought Appeal make any deduction from funds received, so 100% of all local contributions will be provided to assist those who need help. Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club has transferred $6,000 to each area in the name of this district. Mr Sang said that unfortunately the effects of drought, even after breaking rains, could linger for some time, so it might be necessary to undertake a further appeal in this area. He thanked all donors and supporting commercial outlets throughout the area, saying the success of this appeal is in no small part due to the extreme generosity of residents and businesses in the Maleny Blackall Range area.

Vale Gretel Pickering

The inaugural patron of Friends of Mary Cairncross, Mrs Gretel Pickering of Maleny, passed away on May 28, 2018. Gretel was born in Sydney, where she married Stewart in 1964, before moving to Maleny with their two daughters in 1977. They bought the Maleny Hotel and gave us the first “pink pub” on the range. Her life at the pub was one of great joy for both her and the patrons. Shortly after selling the pub in 1996, Gretel and Stewart built their wonderful home next door to the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. This is where Gretel’s love of the reserve truly began, initially as a volunteer at the first visitor’s centre, a role she loved. Her ability to talk with anyone was a gift that made visitors feel so warmly welcomed. Through her family trust, Gretel gifted a great deal to the reserve, which enabled the purchase of many essential items and allowed for many scientific projects, especially the sound recording of the critically endangered Coxen’s fig-parrot. Gretel was a lady of grace and dignity and will be dearly missed. Her three loves, aside from her family, were the pub, the reserve and to keep her weekly hair appointments. The Friends pay our deepest gratitude to Gretel Her Pink Pub for all she did.

Simple step to a safer home - It doesn’t matter how often we say it, people are still leaving property unsecured. Locking your house and car and securing other buildings on your property such as sheds are some of the simplest things you can do to avoid being a victim of crime. Caravans and boats should also be secured by whatever means suitable, either housed in a locked garage or secured to something. Leaving keys in easy to access places can increase the chances that someone else will also be able to find them. As convenient as it is to throw keys and wallets on the bench as you walk in the door, it may also be convenient for a thief who doesn’t even need to search your house for some of your most valuable items. I was recently told that some members of one family leave keys and other valuables on the table on the back patio! This saves thieves the effort of breaking in by supplying keys to the house and car. National Parks - We are so very lucky to have the beautiful natural environment of the Glass House Mountains on our doorstep. They provide both a stunning backdrop and a great place to get outdoors. Unfortunately, there are always going to be risks involved in the use of these outdoor areas. Generally it’s not locals who get caught out, but recent events are a timely reminder of the risks. There are many things to consider if you are planning activities in our National Parks, particularly climbing the summit routes of Mt Beerwah and Mt Tibrogargan. While you may be extremely experienced and confident don’t assume other family members, friends or visitors are at the same level. Make sure the activity suits the level of fitness and experience of the entire group, wear appropriate clothing and footwear, don’t climb in the wet and let someone know where you are going. While it’s important to avoid the heat of the day in warm weather it is also vital to ensure you allow plenty of time to complete your return journey in daylight. Come and meet your neighbours - The Glasshouse Country Neighbourhood Watch group will have an informal get together at the Beerwah Library on Tuesday, October 9 at 2.30pm. You can come and have a ‘coffee with a copper’ (that’s me!) or just have a chat with some locals and library volunteers. We are hoping to hold these get-togethers every couple of months and would love to see some new faces there.

Sculpture delight the senses

Sculpture on the Edge, now in its eighth year, has become a substantial drawcard for art lovers and visitors to the region to view each of the entries on display in the tranquil gardens of Spicers Tamarind Retreat in Maleny. This year's overall winner ‘Adornment of Trees’ asks the question: “What if trees have an individuality and they were able to express that through wearable 'jewelry' made entirely from the resources found in nature?” Artist Laura Vecmane describes her work as her gift of gratitude to nature, inviting the viewer to take more time to appreciate, to care and to share further nature's creative offerings.

Earth, Wind and Fire

Other winners included runner up Phil Willy with ‘Personal Best’, and Yanni Van Zijl, with ‘Earth Wind and Fire’, taking out the Environmental Award. A highly commended was given to Richard Eggleston for ‘Natures Recyclers the Dung Beetles’. The exhibition is open to the public until September 30. There is no charge to wander around the gardens and you can also take the opportunity to vote for your favourite sculpture in the people’s choice award. Spicers Tamarind is located at 88 Obi Lane South, Maleny.

School News Maths Fiesta day

Contributed by Ashley Pitman Beerburrum State School students and teachers recently enjoyed a fun-filled day exploring puzzles, games and activities all based around ‘thinking mathematically’. The day was designed to help improve the students’ skills in numeracy as well as to engage them in fun activities to get them working like mathematicians. Heath There were very specific links to the Australian Curriculum content strands, but equally important were the strong links to the proficiency strands of reasoning and problem solving. In the morning and afternoon sessions students completed the Maths Fiesta activities. They were each provided a personal ‘Fiesta passport’ to receive stamps for the Zara activities attempted or completed. During the middle session, teachers organised four different measurement activities that helped teach content and skills that are currently being explored in our classroom units.

Kids in action

The Maleny’s River School’s year 5 class was one of 25 Sunshine Coast schools who attended, presented and ran a workshop at the Kids in Action conference at the Lake Kawana Community Centre on Friday. The conference brings schools together to explore local environmental issues and is a major focus of Kids Teaching Kids Week. This year the Kids in Action theme is ‘Changing climates – Changing lives’, which focuses on the implications of climate change both locally and across the globe. The students, under the leadership of our arts and culture teacher Alieta Belle, created the winning display with a greenhouse and igloo made of recycled materials.

They also designed personalised t-shirts with original wording and artwork promoting messages about climate change.

Fiver for a farmer

Contributed by Tanya Hayden The Beerwah State High School Student Council recently held a ‘Fiver for a farmer’ fundraising event that received great support, especially from the year 7 students and the staff. The Student Council hosted a sausage sizzle, staff decorated their work spaces and all feasted on Aussie delicacies, while at the same time donating money to this very worthy cause. It was great to see such community spirit, with many taking the opportunity to think beyond themselves and help others in need.

Wildlife in your backyard

Ian McMaster and his wife Chrissie have a great passion for the native plants and animals that live on their magnificent nature refuge at Mt Mellum. Ian has documented most of the species that live there, from rainforest plants and greater gliders right down to the moths, of which there are hundreds of different types. The couple have been restoring habitat on their 105 hectare (260 acre) property over the past eight years and are collaborating with surrounding landholders to protect the bush and create wildlife corridors in the district. Hinterland Bush Links assists similar work throughout the region and Sunshine Coast Council plays an important role in supporting these community efforts. Ian will be speaking about his amazing discoveries at the Hinterland Bush Links annual general meeting at 10am on Saturday, September 29 at the Maleny Community Centre Verandah Room, 23 Maple St, Maleny. The talk is entitled ‘Living in a biodiversity hot spot – getting to know the rich assortment of wildlife on your block’. All welcome. Please RSVP to Susie Duncan wilderness@hotkey.net.au.

The Discovery Centre at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (MCSR) is open from 9am4.30pm every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday. It is staffed by an enthusiastic band of volunteers, who come from all walks of life and all age groups. The volunteer group does have a majority of retirees, but there are also younger folk and all are happy to share their time and information about the rainforest with visitors. Their knowledge may have been accumulated over a lifetime or may have been acquired recently. Without doubt, learning is ongoing. Regular presentations by experts in their respective fields are held for volunteers who can attend for their own interest and to increase their knowledge of the flora and fauna of the rainforest. A recent session on the identification of reptiles from a local snake catcher changed many volunteers’ ideas and phobias about snakes. To complement the current ‘After Dark’ theme, the community speaker series at MCSR has had an excellent array of speakers on all matters nocturnal. The talks have proven very popular with attendees, with topics such as light pollution, creatures of the night and fungi bioluminescence. There has also been a beautiful exhibition in the theatrette showcasing Maleny Printmakers’ art works inspired by the night and night dwellers. Keep a watch out for the new series of talks relating to the next theme - ‘In Cold Blood’ - to be unveiled on October 8. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association will hold its annual general meeting at 9am on October 20 at the Discovery Centre. All interested people are welcome. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. To find out how to become involved check out www.friends-of-mary-cairncross.com.au or call 5435 0348.

Neville Field - artist

The work of local Glass House Mountains artist Neville Field is featured in a new self-titled exhibition ‘Neville Field – Artist’, currently on display at Vianta, 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah. Neville’s art is exhibited nationally and internationally and this current exhibition runs from February 25 until April 29 with an opening night event scheduled for this Friday, March 2, at 6.30pm. ‘Neville Field – Artist’ will show examples of all of Neville’s techniques and feature his wide range of subject matter. His preferred art medium is printmaking in its various forms however his work can utilise a range of media – choosing that which seems appropriate at the time. His artwork includes printmaking, painting, drawing, and mixed media. Neville says: “My art is a continuous exploration of the world around me. In nature I find an interesting and complex hierarchy of growth, death and decay with the dominant exploiting the weak; a bit like business and politics! Colour can be both exciting and expressive while shape and form may not immediately be obvious. Hurriedly scratched marks, frantically chase my imagination as I search for answers to or else I just translate a feeling sparks of ideas, into an image.” He also paints and makes Artists’ Books. Neville studied a BA in Visual Art at UNENR in Lismore, NSW, before moving to Alice Springs for 15 years. He was greatly where he lived influenced by Indigenous artists with and by the surrounding he worked desert studied a Masters in Printmaking which impacted his palette while he from SCU. He explains: “As the idea is developed, the choice of medium becomes apparent… It all starts with a drawing. Drawing for me is a means of toying with ideas. It allows me to imagine concepts and explore specks of and layouts, or trains of thought and the use of space relationships. notions The exhibition at Vianta will ” be ‘refreshed’ on the weekend 31-April 1 allowing purchased of March works to be collected if required. book a table at the opening To night contact Steve on 0431 730 275. Markets in Mooloolah

The next Mooloolah Four Seasons Market will held on Saturday, September 29 at the Mooloolah Hall from 8am-1pm. The market, which started in 2014, was originally held at the Mooloolah Community Centre but this year has made a successful move to the hall, which allows stallholders to maximise display opportunities and allows the organisers to accommodate indoor and outdoor stalls. The market was established when the Mooloolah Community Centre Op Shop was bursting at the seams with donations. The volunteers decided to hold a mega sale and invited members of the public to have a stall to sell their trash and treasure from their car boot or trailers. The day was a great success and a few of the stallholders and volunteers decided to establish a regular quarterly market. Lesley Jerman put her hand up to coordinate the market and her son Hamish came up with the name Mooloolah Four Seasons Market and designed the logo. The Community Centre would like to thank Lesley for her work on coordinating the market as she is retiring from the role to pursue other interests.

Lesley is handing over to Judi Olsen and Dianne Held. If you wish to book a stall site please contact them on 5494 7822 or email info@mooloolahcommunitycentre.org. The Mooloolah Public Hall is located at 42 Bray Road, Mooloolah Keep up to date with what’s happening by following us on the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre Facebook page.

Oktoberfest at Mooloolah Valley Country Club Dust off your lederhosen and grab your ruffled apron as Oktoberfest comes to the Mooloolah Valley Country Club on Saturday, October 6. Starting at 11am, the event will see the club decked out as a typical German beer hall featuring German music, German food and German beer, plus plenty of fun and games.

A bowls challenge will be held on the day with some great prizes on offer, while inside the hall there will be German music pumping away and traditional German food such as sauerkraut, bratwurst, warm pretzels and more on offer. Tickets are just $25, which includes entry, a free stein and a chance to win some magical mystery prizes that will be drawn throughout the day. Make sure you dress up in your own version of traditional German attire as the best dressed frau and herr on the day will be judged for the chance to win. While dressing up in German attire is optional it is strongly encouraged to add to the festivities. The venue will be closed to the public and tickets are selling fast - so make sure you get your friends together and book your table. A courtesy bus will operate throughout the day. Tickets can be purchased at the club on Mooloolah Connection Road or by phoning the club on 5494 5973.

Re: Funeral parlour – Maleny

I would like to bring to the notice of your readers what I consider a remarkable effort by students and the community of your area. I live in western NSW and recently people here were the lucky recipients of grocery packages and some hay. I understand this was started by Mrs Jade King of Beerwah, who mentioned to her agricultural students that the drought in western districts was having a devastating effect on both stock and farmers. Her agricultural students of the Glasshouse Christian College decided to fundraise. The school, students and community really got behind this venture and in a very short amount of time raised enough money to purchase a truckload of hay. Added to this, a local farmer, John Allen, donated his truck and time to transport the hay several hundred kilometres to Warialda. Also included in the trip were all the donated groceries, which are still being distributed as we hear of those in dire need. I would like to acknowledge the wonderful work and generosity of both the students and the community. Besides the actual hands-on help, it makes such a difference to know that others care enough to put themselves out and that they recognise that the unusual weather events of the past year have to be dealt with. We very much appreciate every single person’s contribution. Kate Swain Warialda New South Wales

In the GC&M News August 1 edition there was an article concerning an application for a funeral parlour/wedding function centre at 57 Mountain View Road. I would like to clarify that the local residents of the Mary Cairncross precinct have been canvassed and they are not in favour of a funeral parlour/function centre in close proximity to their homes. The proposed development is within several hundred metres of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and adjoins the Glass House Mountains National Park. Any development on the property will impact on the amenity and rural character of the Mary Cairncross precinct. This substantial commercial enterprise will permanently change the atmosphere of Mountain View Road scenic tourist route with slow funeral processions, signage, noise, lights and land clearing, which will be just the start to the changing use of the rural land in the area. Would the local councillors and the Mayor Mark Jamieson want a funeral/function facility next to their homes and watch funeral processions go past? There are already plenty of churches and other venues in Maleny, which do a great job. This is unwelcome development. It should be in an industrial/commercial area and not in an iconic rural tourist zone. Sally Stewart Maleny

Legacy Week - A very successful activity

Many thanks to residents of Beerwah, Landsborough and Glass House Mountains who were generous in their giving to the special week for raising funds to support war widows/widowers and their children. Thank you to the banks at Beerwah for allowing us to collect and sell in their vicinity as well as Mrs Browns, IGA and Club Glass House, which was “the place to be” on the Saturday and Sunday. The girls from the ANZ Bank have our gratitude for counting the cash with kindness. Without our volunteers, Elizabeth, Desley (with Buck’s Bakery’s great support) and Patricia we could not have raised $4,508.65. Mavis Robb Peachester

Re: Fastest communications to Asia

In the story in last week’s edition, you have asked for your readers’ thoughts on Sunshine Coast Council’s decision to spend up to $20 million on a submarine cable. Add to this the many millions being spent on a new runway at the airport. Yet, we can’t get a decent surface on Glenview Road and a kerbside rubbish collection. You probably don’t really want to know what I think of this council. It wouldn’t be suitable for publication. Yours in frustration. Brad Boustead Glenview

Re: Part-time parliamentarian

Andrew Powell's recent letter (GC&M News, September 5) detailing newly imposed restrictions on debate in State Parliament by Annastacia Palaszczuk is disappointing but somehow all too familiar. He points out that speaking opportunities for Opposition and cross-bench members have been largely removed. There is now only a limited window for the Opposition to debate new legislation, contained by strict time limits, regardless of the potential gravity of such legislation. Who would have thought our Premier would turn out to have dictatorial tendencies? She's starting to remind me of the previous Premier. Remember Andrew when your mob were last in power and the trajectory of that government? It was one thing to sack some public servants, but another entirely for Campbell Newman to interfere with the judiciary and engage in bizarre actions such as imposing mandatory prison sentences on people for not committing any genuine crime. Is there something in the water down at State Parliament? Queenslanders value freedom, probably greater than anything else. If the two main parties can't deliver on the basics such as fairness and democracy, perhaps it is time to look elsewhere. Each of the smaller parties picked up seats at the last state election, and if the trend were to continue, the community might get some of its power back and a better deal with it. Perhaps I'll squirrel away your letter in my scrapbook Andrew, and pull it out if you get back into government and start heading down a certain well-trod path... Jon Woodlands Cambroon

Finding a suitable home loan for you: Fixed versus variable When you're trying to find a suitable home loan for your situation, it can feel like there are countless options to choose from. However, there are two main types that you should know about, which will possibly apply to you and your property goals. A fixed rate home loan is one of the more common mortgage types that Australians choose. This could suit you if you're a first home buyer, or simply looking for some certainty while you make repayments. Fixed rate loans secure you a fixed rate of interest for a period of time 22

(usually three to five years), during which time your loan repayments won't vary. Due to the ever-changing economic conditions, cost of funding and other factors this could be an option to consider. On the other hand, a variable rate home loan could be worth investigating if you're hoping to secure lower repayments. If the official cash rate is at a lower level, the amount of interest you pay will reflect this. However, keep in mind that if interest rates begin to climb, so too will your repayments.

A benefit of choosing a variable rate is the flexibility of the loan. With these mortgages, you have the ability to switch lenders and refinance without paying any penalties. This is also a benefit if you want to sell the property while holding the loan. Loan features such as an offset account, redraw facility and the ability to make extra repayments whenever you want, are usually available without any restrictions or financial penalties. Sometimes these features will not be available on a fixed rate product or penalties may

apply. Call Teresa Harrison today to help you navigate all the different types of loans on the market and to understand which type of loan suits your requirements.

Just half a cup of broccoli a day can help older people avoid being hospitalised for a fall, new research from Edith Cowan University has found. Researchers from the School of Medical and Health Sciences studied the diets of a group of Western Australian women aged 70 years and over and tracked falls over 15 years. They found that those who ate at least one serve each day of cruciferous vegetables – such as brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage or broccoli – had a significantly lower risk of having a fall that required hospitalisation. Lead researcher Dr Marc Sim said suffering an injurious fall could have a significant impact on an individual’s quality of life. “On top of the physical impact, suffering a fall has been linked to a reduced participation in

Massage

social and physical activities due to a fear of falling again,” Dr Sim said. “Additionally, falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisations in people aged over 65, which is projected to cost the health system approximately $789 million per year by 2021.” Dr Sim said this was why it was vital to investigate new ways to prevent people from falling. “We wanted to find out what factors could help prevent people from falling to allow them to maintain their quality of life well into old age,” he said. The study was published in the journal Nutrients.

Tea with the Dames

You are invited to spend a Sunday afternoon with four of your favourite British actresses - all of whom have reached a venerable age and have been awarded the status of 'Dame' for their contribution to theatre, television and film. Dame Eileen Atkins, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Joan Plowright and Dame Maggie Smith gather (where else?) in an English garden to talk over a cuppa and be filmed for what turns out to be an entertaining documentary. In this celebration of the lives and careers of these four remarkable women (whose combined age is 342 years!), they come together to talk about their friendship that spans more than half a century. Director Roger Mitchell includes an enormous amount of archival material to show how their reputations have developed from humble theatrical beginnings to playing royalty. And don't expect the dames to pull any punches. Their conversation is witty, candid, irreverent and delightfully unedited. So, grab a cuppa and settle down to enjoy the dames' scintillating company. Maleny Film Society offers you the opportunity to see the film that the Israeli Government tried to ban in 2017. Foxtrot, which depicts a cover-up by the Israeli Defence Force to protect its reputation, was denounced by the government. However, director Samuel Maoz said: "If I criticise the place where I live, I do it … because I want to protect it. I do it from love." Foxtrot is an anti-war, pro-people film described as a compelling family tragedy that provides a "portrait of a family, a society and a nation trapped in cycles of unwinnable conflict". It portrays the unintended side-effects of living in a constant state of war - the tension, the boredom, the prejudices and the tragedy. Told in three parts, the narrative is based around an Israeli family whose son is killed while serving in the army on the Palestinian border and the ensuing lies that are told at the highest level of government. In the Garden Wonderful wisteria

Reesville locals Jim and Kim Straker opened their expansive garden as part of the Maleny Garden Club’s ‘Gardening on the Edge’ weekend in 2015, so they have some gorgeous features … just like the wisteria in this photo that Jim sent me. Wisteria, belonging to the pea family, is a vine originating from China, Japan and Korea and has been cultivated in the US for hundreds of years, resulting in a wide range of flower colours (from mauve to violet to pink and white) and growth habits. But most people in this part of the world grow the common standard mauve Chinese species (Wisteria sinensis) as it is hardy and will put on a good display if treated right. So here are a few tips if you want to grow wisteria … not to Jim, as he already knows what he’s doing. Give it lots of room. Wisteria is a fast grower – it will literally grow before your eyes - and it will need a strong structure to support it, such as a pergola or framed walkway, but will also look great if let to grow up into a large standing tree. Buying a grafted specimen means you will be guaranteed that it will flower the way the label says it will. Seed grown plants will have a natural genetic diversity, which means you may not end up with the flowering beauty from which the seeds were taken. You can also get a good result by growing a plant which has been struck from a cutting. Wisteria really does prefer a cooler climate, but they will tolerate our subtropics and will flourish if looked after. Wisteria prefers full sun and a rich, well drained soil (they don’t like wet feet), but its roots must be kept cool so a good layer of mulch is very important. Wisteria is deciduous, meaning it will lose its leaves over winter. This makes it perfect for providing a shady summer cover over a pergola, but allowing the warming sun to shine through in winter.

Celebrating diversity

The pea flowers grow on long drooping bunches (called a raceme) in spring, creating a beautiful scented welcome to the new season. To achieve a well-shaped and prolifically flowering vine, it needs to be pruned correctly. The vines must be pruned in summer after the flowers have finished but before the leaves fall. Wisteria develops its flower buds during winter on the second year’s growth, so if you prune the vines in winter you will cut out the flowering buds and will end up with a poorly performing plant. At the end of flowering, cut back the new growth hard – by three quarters or more. Cut out any weak looking stems or ones growing where you don’t want them to be. Check for any suckers emerging from below the graft and cut them off flush with the stem. You can give wisteria a tidying up prune in autumn, but just to train the vine to grow where you want it to (rather than where it wants to roam). Another word of warning – wisteria has adventurous roots, so take care if there are drainage pipes near where you want it to grow.

See you at the Orchid Show

With Spencer and Karen Shaw

As we begin our fourth year at Forest Heart, we celebrate more than ever the great diversity and richness of the native plants of South East Queensland and Australian native plants in general. Where we live, and down into northern New South Wales, is one of Australia’s and the world’s great biodiversity hotspots. On the Sunshine Coast alone we have 1,500 species of local native plants and that number grows to 3,500 when we include the rest of South East Queensland. We are all lucky to live in and be responsible for a well and truly amazing little patch of planet Earth. When we plant local native plants we create not just beautiful gardens but habitat for wildlife and we preserve and enrich our local ecosystems - and your life too. If you like sharing your backyard with wildlife like us, a range of native plants that includes trees, shrubs, groundcovers and vines and a variety of resources that supply food, nesting and perching materials are key to the diversity of the wildlife you will see and share your backyard with. Celebrate our diverse native plants and bring them into your gardens too.

Don’t forget the Glasshouse Country Orchid Show is on this weekend September 21-22 at the Beerwah Community Hall, Peachester Road, Beerwah. Doors open from 8.30am each day and entry is only $3 and free for children. You’ll be guaranteed to see masses of spectacular orchids on show. As well, there are orchids and foliage plants on sale, orchid care demonstrations, stalls selling lots of gardening products, raffles and refreshments. There is plenty of parking around the site and easy drop-off at the door. Or you could come on the train and wander across through the new Beerwah town centre.

From the churches Loneliness

Each of us has experienced loneliness at some time. Loneliness is a common condition that we are told affects about one in three adults! It can make us feel stressed and can lead to depression. Loneliness affects people of all ages and has reportedly increased in the past few decades. It is a complex condition because it doesn’t necessarily reflect the number of acquaintances we have. Computer users may have many Facebook friends and still be lonely. Loneliness is less about the number of contacts that we make and more about our perceptions. When we become lonely, we can start to see the world differently. We tend to focus more on ourselves and become increasingly negative and more judgmental of others. Part of the problem is that as individuals we are each fundamentally separated from all other humans, and although we understand each other to a certain extent, we will still feel that separation. The Book of Proverbs says: “Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else

can fully share its joy”. No one fully understands each of us as individuals except for God. The Bible explains that God wired us for connection, for community. Brené Brown, a researcher on human interaction, explains: “I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship”. Not only were we wired for connection with other humans, we were wired for connection with God. God loves us and desires a relationship with us. God knows and understands each of us intimately. Psalm 139 tells us that God knows even our thoughts. And God wants to share our lives when we are lonely, troubled, happy or sad. It was St Augustine who wrote: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you”. God is always there for us, in the good times and the bad; we just need to reach out to our loving God who walks beside us.

Sport Great success in 2018 Contributed by Craig Bales The recent AFL Sunshine Coast League's gala awards night proved to be a great night for our club, with Chantelle Page taking out the runner up award for the U13s and Courtney Page the runner up award for the U15s, as well as making the top six for the U17 competition. Jo Page won the rookie umpire of the year. Sam Hamilton-Barry finished fifth in the U12s count and we had to two previous Lions players finish in their respective top six for their competitions. The club was awarded ‘Club of the Year’, which is a great result for all the hard work and effort that has been put in by all the volunteers, players and parents. The award is judged on many different aspects of the club, from running our game days on time and teams in correct uniforms, to the conduct of players/spectators through to our financial governance.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Miles Allen The wonderful weather has brought more bowlers to Maleny Bowls Club and while it would be good to see some rain, it’s good to be able to play without it. Our green dries out fairly quickly so any puddles that arrive with heavy rain soon disappear. We had some spirited competition with our Tuesday group, all keen to put their bowls close to the jack. Of course, being keen doesn’t always make it happen but full points for trying. Sometimes you have to put your bowl in a different position to stop the opposition from winning - tactics, teamwork and tenacity. Four bowlers went to Kilcoy for a wonderful day of friendly competition. They played very well in their first game but as happens so often, the delicious afternoon tea slowed them down for their second game. Note to bowlers: less cake, more consistency. This week is the final round of the Wednesday night twilight bowls for this season. The Outlaws need to beat the Tutors to get the coveted trophy. Bryan is putting Lyn and Jackie of the Tutors through an intensive training regime to see if they can regain their form. Ian, Min and Christine/Paul of the Outlaws just need to keep their heads. The local derby with the Amigos and the Musketeers will also take place with half a sheep station at stake. Coach Neville is expecting a tightly fought game. May the best teams win, but if they don’t, they’ll have a good time. Bowls - the best ball game, but we’re biased.

NTPs: 3 - Trefor Jones, 5 - Roy Phillips and Toni Bishop, 8 - Doug Johnstone, 13 - Steven Greig and 15 - Geoffrey Nordstrom. Saturday, September 15: In an 18 hole mixed single stableford competition first place went to Gary Wright with 42 points, runner-up to Jan Johnston with 39 points and third place to Jimmy Byun with 38 points. NTPs: 3 - Corey Zammit, 5 and 8 - Jeff Kruse and 13 - Jimmy Byun. Another three holes have been added so why not come and play our extended 12-hole course? Witta tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails fought hard against Maleny Racqueteers and once again the score of 40-23 did not indicate the long rallies that were played. Our thanks to the team of Sonia, Gerry Janet and Jan. Whistlers played at Mooloolaba against Legends. It was very warm and there were three tie breaker sets so we had enough by the end. Score was 26-47 games, 1-7 sets. Team was Brenda Warner, Liz Mellish, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. In veteran's tennis Witta Wikings the games were forfeited by the Nambour No Worries. Kid's fun day is planned for Tuesday, October 2 from 8am–1pm for kids of all ages and levels. There will be tennis fun and games with a mini round robin tournament, as well as targets and the piñata and homemade morning tea, fruit and hot dogs for $25. You can register via email: mareehooley@gmail.com or text 0437 295 501.

BEERWAH & DISTRICT TROPHIES Contributed by Ken Baker Thursday, September 6: Donna Manning 10 defeated Vince Carbery 8 in a short game of association croquet. Val Carbery and Bev Sockhill teamed up to defeat Gillian Bradley and Helen Andrews in a game of ricochet 11–8. Sunday, September 9: Vince went down to Val 5–12, while Ken Barker was very nearly beaten by Frances Harper in a ladder challenge. The game went down to the wire with Frances missing an easy opportunity to draw, sending the game to a golden hoop decider, thinking that she was further behind than she was. The final result went to Ken 5-4, so the ladder is unchanged. Donna played in the Queensland open doubles competition at Toombul on the weekend of September 8-9. She was partnered by Greg Kerswell and they won three of their six games against strong competition. The eventual winners of the competition were Terry Ericsson and Willy Silk. Donna reports that it was a friendly competition played in good spirit and that Toombul were good hosts. The Bray team played their last round with honour. The Range fielded Sarah Widin, Kath Smith and Frances Harper. Headland Buderim consisted of Martin Atkins and Diane Horsman. Sarah lost a close and tortuous game to Martin 6–7. Frances played brilliantly to record a seven break winning 15–9 against Diane. Onlookers remarked on her good play. Well done Frances. The doubles was a dour affair, with The Range winning 13-9. The overall result - two games to one - means that Maleny is coming home with a wet sail and could possibly finish second overall – a great result after an ordinary beginning. This is a team that has grown in stature during the competition. Preparations are under way to defend the Fitchen Trophy, donated by Lew and Barbara Fitchen for a doubles competition against Nambour. This year it will be played in Nambour on a date to be decided soon. We require eight players. Contact Vince Carbery or Priscilla Vickers if you would like to participate. Please nominate for the club championships, which are also coming up soon, by writing your name on the blackboard on the clubhouse door. Lessons for beginners on Saturday mornings at 8am on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, September 12: In the jackpot, ten teams enjoyed some very good bowling on the green. The draw for the day was most ends won and we had four teams winning 12 ends. Countback to 14th end winners were Marilyn Podmore, Joy Reason and Vic Muscat with nine points. Runners-up with two teams then on seven points on countback resulted in Dennis Hume, Jack Timm and Di Hume winning. Lucky draw went to Noelene Annakin, Trevor Dennis and John Annakin. The $600 jackpot was again an elusive +7 with five teams on +8. See you all next month. Get your teams in early. Saturday, September 15: Round one mixed pairs, Rae Farrell and Dean Shaw defeated Rhyliss Aitken and Ron Wilson (forfeit after leading 17-1); Chris Dougan and Kerry Molloy defeated Margaret and Kevin Beasley 20-13; Jenny Hobson and Jim Tatum defeated Jack Chirgwin (junior) and Chloe Runge (junior) 1918; Marilyn Boulton and Warren Blackbourne defeated Di Hume and Brian Saunders 17-11; Marilyn Podmore and Grant Podmore defeated Dick Coppa and Ann White 26-19; Eileen Pierce and Rob Scullion defeated Noelene and John Annakin 34-14; Viv James and Rodney Sharpe defeated Di Garland and Simon Richter 23-19. Sunday, September 16: Round 2 mixed pairs, Chris Dougan and Kerry Molloy defeated Jenny Hobbson and Jimmy Tatum 28-12; Marilyn Boulton and Warren Blackbourne defeated Rod and Wendy Platt 23-18; Eileen Pierce and Rob Scullion defeated Marilyn and Grant Podmore 31-19; Rae Farrell and Dean Shaw in a close one over Viv James and Rodney Sharpe 26-24. Semi-finals will be this Saturday at 9.30am. Our spring carnival is now officially full with 16 teams. We have quite a few visiting players and some great teams this year so it will be a massive carnival. For those that didn’t get a team in there is always next year. Looking forward to what will be a great weekend. Thanks again to our sponsors Bassett Barks and Allan Pashby from Glasshouse / Beerwah Motel.

Just for Laughs The good brother

ARIES March 21 - April 20 This is a good week to put your best foot forward! Have the best intentions when it comes to your health. With Mercury entering the sign of Libra in your sector of partnerships, it is strongly suggested that you go to a good supermarket and buy flowers for your partner. The Full Moon sees someone making a sudden move now. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Open up the lines of communication by expressing your opinions and listening to what others have to say. Apply energy with determination and you will meet with success in realising an ambition. The planets moving forward suggest that you avoid procrastination. This seems to be a good week to enjoy friends and group ties. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 You now can make progress on a plan as Mercury, your ruling planet, enters Libra. This means you can expect harmony in love with a partner or child. From the 22nd the Sun changes into the Libra sign and lights up your romantic and creative feelings. The following week the Full Moon sets love against friendship. Start with a smile! CANCER June 24 - 22 July 22 With the Sun’s entry into Libra this will signal the beginning of a new domestic cycle. Yes, it will be a week to assess and focus on your living arrangements. It may not be easy to hear what a member of the family has to say, but you should listen and pay attention. The Full Moon week coming spotlights your career now.

leaves it there. The bloke becomes a regular in the bar, and always drinks the same way. One day, he comes in and only orders two pots. All the regulars take notice and fall silent. When he comes back to the bar for the second round, the bartender says: "I don't want to intrude on your grief, but I wanted to offer my condolences on your loss." The bloke looks quite puzzled for a moment, then light dawns in his eyes and he laughs. "Oh, no, everybody's just fine," he explains. "It's just that my wife and I have started going to church and I had to quit drinking. "Hasn't affected my brothers though ...” Contributed by Hugh Jones, Beerwah

LEO July 23 – August 22 Your ruling planet they say is the Sun, even though we all know it is a star rather than a planet. Nevertheless, with the entry of the sign of Libra, this enhances your thinking and encounters a fired-up personal exchange. The Full Moon next week stirs controversial topics to conclusions. There is a very heavy negotiation skill required now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This week will find you sharp, expressive and articulate in sharing your knowledge. The teacher in you wants to come out! This means your high mental energy needs expression, and if it doesn’t it evolves into a bout of nervousness. Now that the Sun is in Libra and with a Full Moon next week you are doing some soul searching re emotions. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 A private meeting opens up not only affections, but also a path forward. Don’t let the little things get you down. The planet Mercury leaves your isolation sector and enters the sign of Libra, together with double energies with the Sun, which resolves debates. Definitely take a break from recent domestic tensions. Get support to achieve goals. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 A perplexing development has you pondering a relationship and your sense of duty towards it. You can benefit from those intellectual people with encyclopaedic knowledge. This is because Jupiter is in the sign of Scorpio and perhaps you may have to suffer a little sarcasm. The Full Moon favours getting any dialogue going that finds the right response.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The planets are finally moving away from your lethargic zones and shifting into dynamic forward motion once more as the Sun enters the people-pleasing sign of Libra. Be open to affections from others, especially as the following week sees the Full Moon bringing up emotional communications about love, children, friends and your own involvement. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The Full Moon arriving after the weekend shows that you are capable of making long-range adjustments regarding family, property and career. This is all because new information is viewed under the exchange of energies between friends and professionals. This stretches into next month, also because of the sign of Libra. Your strengths will surmount problems. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 You should feel happy and well-adjusted with other friends and associates as Mercury enters Libra as well as the vital Sun sign. As these are air signs and you are also an air sign, you may feel more responsibility on your shoulders to go over old plans. The enthusiasm coming initiates action on a stalled plan. A sudden change just needs minor adjustments. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Perhaps sudden moves can have outcomes that seem unpredictable. Just stick with what you know as with the planetary energies moving into the sign of Libra you will see opportunities coming and going.
