Hi Everyone... A few weeks ago we included a story about a local Australian judo champion, Ben Lewis. When Ben popped into the office to share his good news he was with his dad Brian who is a Police Volunteer at Beerwah Police Station. While we were chatting I learnt that Brian had only just undergone a kidney transplant and he told me about the massive changes it had already made to his life. I remembered that years ago, when there was the option to tick whether or not you would be happy to consider being an organ donor, I had ticked the box without really giving the decision too much thought. However, when you start chatting to someone who has had their life transformed thanks to another person and their family’s generous decision, you realise what a truly amazing thing organ donation is. As next week is DonateLife week I thought it was a good time to share some of Brian’s insights. So, if it is something that you have thought about, check out the story on page 6 about how you can register to be an organ and tissue donor. Regards,

Funeral parlour planned for Maleny

Maleny is known to be hub for ceremonies, with weddings having become a mainstay of the local economy. Now a local couple have a plan to expand that horizon to include funerals in the mix. e: daylily@bigpond.com Mountain View Daylily Nursery A development application has been lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council, seeking approval to establish a funeral parlour and function facility on a property at 57 Mountain View Road. A funeral parlour is outside of what is currently an allowable development on the rural zoned land, but the development application report suggests that the benefits outweigh the planning scheme mismatch. The plan is to hold a maximum of two events per Paydown private day (either functions or funerals), for up to 150 loans first people. If you have money to put against According to the report, the funeral parlour will your loans, then it is usually best to operate more akin to a function facility, with the pay your personal loans first. development only undertaking funeral ceremonies You will get a deduction for the interest on business and memorials. At a pre-lodgement meeting, council indicated their general support for the proposal; however, they identified that the application will have to provide specific detail on how the site can accommodate the proposed uses, without adverse impacts on the surrounding area and land uses. Council also identified that the application would have to maintain and enhance the character and visual amenity of the area and not cause nuisance to nearby residents. The development will see the entrance upgraded, a new driveway, a carparking area will be created, and the existing dwelling be repurposed as a function centre, along with the construction of a 120-seat chapel with an associated courtyard and ‘reflection pavilion’ and amenities. Beerburrum community updated on quarry plans By Christine Smith (Beerburrum Action Group) A recent community meeting organised by the Beerburrum Action Group was an opportunity to update locals on the proposed quarry on the Beerburrum-Woodford Road. Andrew Powell MP, Cr Rick Baberowski and Barro Group representatives attended, along with a large number of local people to learn about the proposal and its impact upon residents. The Sunshine Coast planning scheme specifies "that Beerburrum will remain a small village with an intimate rural character and identity, and that development is to occur in such a way as to protect this rural village character”. Beerburrum Action Group members are concerned that the proposed quarry plan does not fit in with this planning decision. In 2013 Beerburrum was identified by the State Government led by Campbell Newman as a Key Resource Area (KRA). Residents were not advised of this decision which appears to conflict with the council planning of 2012. Locals are most concerned by the increase in traffic along the Beerburrum-Woodford Road. It was noted by an informative local truck operator that early morning starts and the resulting long queues will have a significant impact. The presentation from the Barro Group – who wish to develop the quarry – pointed out that currently residents cope with the noise of trains, so other noises could be easily tolerated.

There was quite a bit of discussion about the junction of Beerburrum-Woodford Road with Beerburrum Road and the impact extra traffic will have. There are to be some mitigation works to come. A new footpath has just been completed and this may mean more foot traffic to and from the local school and post office. Hooning traffic is also of concern at this junction. Andrew Powell advised that he would soon have a section on his website to place any complaints of such activity and that it would subsequently be passed on to the police. Several residents in the Cobb and Co Drive and Carriage Crescent subdivision voiced their concerns about property values decreasing with impact from the noise of the proposed quarry operations. It was noted that similar quarry applications in other South-East Queensland areas have been rejected by their local Councils on grounds of the impact such developments have upon residents and residential areas. Subsequent court appeals were also rejected and those applications were withdrawn by the developers, which includes the Barro Group that is applying for the Beerburrum quarry. Asked why there was a need for a new quarry, Ian Ridoutt of the Barro Group advised that it would be necessary for the future development of the area and that current quarries cannot always supply in a timely manner. However, Beerburrum Action Group members noted that current

quarries in the area had approximately 50 years supply. The Barro Group presentation advised that they had contributed to local business and especially had offered funding of air conditioning to the Beerburrum Primary School. Mr Ridoutt was asked about the diesel fumes research which is being done due to its alleged toxic nature around public areas but he was unable to advise what the impact of those fumes would be. Cr Baberowski told the meeting that a development application decision would be made by Sunshine Coast Council around September or October this year.

DonateLife Week You don’t have to be a doctor, nurse or an emergency services worker to save lives this DonateLife Week on the Sunshine Coast. That’s the message during DonateLife Week (July 29 to August 5) from 59-year-old Glass House Mountains local Brian Lewis, who 10 weeks ago received a life-saving kidney donation. Brian had suffered kidney disease as a result of an incorrect prescription medication, which in turn required him to undertake kidney dialysis three times a week and place significant limitation on his life. Since receiving his new kidney, Brian is so very appreciative of what it means to his future that he is keen to take up opportunities that he wouldn’t have previously been able to consider – including a trip to Pearl Harbour. Brian said that his mum had brought him and his siblings up to understand the importance of being an organ donor, but having seen the amazing transformation in himself and his fellow patients in the hospital has definitely reaffirmed his views. Brian is keen to encourage others to think about the difference they or a member of their family could make in taking the step to be an organ donor. It is incredible to think that one organ donor can potentially provide lifechanging outcomes for up to 24 other individuals.

YOUR AFRICAN SAFARI DREAM

DonateLife Week is a great time for all Australians to get the facts about organ and tissue donation, join the Donor Register, and share their donation decision with family and friends. Registering to be an organ and tissue donor is now quick and easy using an online form. Visit donatelife.gov.au – a minute of your time could one day save many lives. “It is also really important for you to have the chat with your loved ones so they know your decision, and to find out if they are willing to one day be an organ and tissue donor,” Brian said.

Maleny petrol station petition tabled The voices of over 600 people against the proposed petrol station development on Bunya Street in Maleny were heard in the Sunshine Coast Council chambers recently. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay tabled the petition, collated by the ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School EVER’ group, calling for the development to not be allowed to proceed citing, amongst other concerns, fears that the increased traffic will risk the safety of the school children. Cr McKay tabled to petition to highlight the level of community angst about this development to the other councillors. “I have committed to the community to bring the matter before council and will continue to do so,” said Cr McKay. “I ensured that the petition was forwarded to the planning department for their noting. It is in the decision process at the moment so we await the officer’s recommendation.”

John and Pam Innes

Local champions By Mike Turner

I am a big fan of telling people about those in our community who are the quiet achievers, those who do amazing things without expecting any reward or praise for what they do. John and Pam Innes are an amazing couple who have called Beerwah home since 1983. They moved up to the area from Brisbane and quickly settled. One of their first connections was with the Anglican Church which used to be located where the Aldi carpark is located today. Before the congregation moved to where they are now on Peachester Road, the church building was sold and transported to a block of land overlooking Baroon Pocket Dam. Pam has been a key leader of the church's ‘Women’s Union’ for a period of 14 years and was involved in running Debutante Balls here in Beerwah for 33. John was District Warden for the Caloundra/Glasshouse Anglican Parish for many years. Pam is a Liturgical Assistant and they both still take an active part in the life of the church. The congregation has been supporting the annual Charity Sports Day for about 20 years, by being responsible for on ballo Pam in a hot air the plant stall, and

8

Pam has nurtured plants for sale and worked on the stall for all that time. Those who know Pam will also know that she used to own and run the ‘Glasshouse Country News’. She has been a writer for a long time – she has been a member of the ‘Society for Women Writers’ since the mid 1980s. The couple bought this local paper in 1987, with John taking on the responsibility for circulation, then sold it to Lea Parkes in 2004. Over the 17 years that Pam ran the paper some of her highlights were: being taken up in helicopters by the Forestry Department to reassure readers during burn off season, going up in a hot air balloon to help promote that business, and the great opportunities to be involved with exciting events at Australia Zoo. She even got to meet the then Prime Minister John Howard. She is particularly proud of the Paul Harris Fellowship for which she was nominated by the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains. John is a well-known figure in the area with a reputation for producing top quality orchids and also honey. John has been a regular competitor and judge for local and regional shows such as the Caboolture and Redcliffe Shows. He has been farming macadamias for about 30 years. Even though he is 89 years old he is still very active and healthy; he is kept busy in what is a physically demanding job. When I was chatting with Pam about this article she explained the ‘Glasshouse Country Orchid Show’ in September is a must to see. John is a Life Member of the Club. Pam showed me various ribbons and trophies he won for both orchids and honey.

Pam covering the story of Australia Zoo's tiger cubs I first met Pam when I came to Beerwah High to work as their chaplain. Pam was on the chaplaincy committee when the service originally started at the school back in 1993, and she has been an active member ever since. She is still involved today and regularly attends meetings and fundraisers. I am very grateful for her ongoing support. John and Pam are 89 and 88 years old respectively and have four children, 13 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. We as a community are fortunate to have talented, hard-working and caring people like John and Pam, who have played their part in contributing to our wonderful part of the world. If you know this couple, please thank and congratulate them. It is important that we share John beekeeping this stuff with each other.

Kim Kirkman in Concert

Local harpist and tenor (ex 'Ten Tenor') Kim Kirkman has finally agreed to a concert exclusively featuring himself this Saturday, August 4, at 3pm at the St Mary's Anglican Church, Montville. Mr Kirkman is the conductor to at least six choirs on the Sunshine Coast, plus a string orchestra, as well as a teacher of the harp, violin and voice. He is also known, particularly in the Hinterland area, as "the harp guy", playing his harp at local weddings and events. As a host to popular concert events such as ‘The Best of Bach’ concert and the ‘Music with Art’ series, Kim continues to inspire and provide groups and individuals with opportunities to express themselves through music. This Saturday's opportunity to see Kim’s talents as a solo artist in a concert of his own name has most likely never happened before.

Over five impressive events, you will see men carry cars and women lift over triple their body weight! Organisers are expecting to see deadlifts well over 300kg! The Strongman program starts at 9am (in the same area as last year), and events will go all day. The main sponsor for the competition is Harris Stability Systems.

Competition posters are available at local schools and Coochin Creek Co-op at Beerwah, or the form can be downloaded from the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News website. The link for this is http://gcnews.com.au/content/282/ content.aspx. Romance and swordplay

Prolific local author Kate Wright will be launching her latest work at a community book launch on Wednesday August 15 at Landsborough Memorial Hall between 10am and noon. This will be Kate’s twelfth book and her first foray into the fictional world of fantasy romance. Entitled ‘Anne’, the book is currently being printed to be ready in time for the launch, and all proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated towards the Blue Care Nursing service. Kate Wright and Ian Macleod Kate, who lives at Glass House Mountains, has previously worked as a tutor, public speaker and radio personality, and since her retirement now donates all the profits generated from her work to charitable health care causes. With a sizzling strapline “Revenge is sweet… but love is sweeter”, Kate’s newest book centers around a woman who travels back to her home country to challenge an overlord and take back ruling the country – and true to the genre it involves plenty of swordplay and romance. The book launch will also feature an introduction from a Blue Care representative and entertainment from local musician Ian B Macleod who has specially composed music and lyrics to a song, ‘Anne’, which will be showcased at the event. Ian will also be donating a copy of a CD with every book sold. Admission is free and morning refreshments will be served. There is mobility access and facilities available. CWA Beerwah Branch

Contributed by Del Davis Currently the branch is low on members; however we have clocked up 970 hours in volunteering, which is very much appreciated throughout the community. Free use of our room has been enjoyed by community groups, for the betterment of our area. Thanks to the foundation members who commenced this branch 70 years ago, which we celebrated with a special morning tea and the purchase of a handmade wooden seat, to remind us and future members of this milestone. The markets are again in place, with a good variety of stalls with new products. From these profits, our Branch is able to fulfil all CWA commitments involving council rates, QR lease, donations to Young Leaders Camp, Annual Awards to both the State High and Christian College, Adopt a Family with a Christmas Hamper through the Salvation Army, the State International Fund and the CWA Centenary Fund. Our building is spic and span with the grounds well looked after. Our room is available for low cost rental and we have some clients, but we would like many more.

Music Today

Strauss in da Haus

Promising an entertaining Viennese concert experience, ‘Strauss in da Haus’ will be an intimate afternoon of luxurious melodies performed by three highly accomplished and talented musicians. This unique show will undoubtedly thrill classical music fans with a Hinterland performance scheduled for the Maleny Community Centre Main Hall on Sunday August 12, from 3pm-5pm. Featuring Internationally renowned artists, the concert will showcase the work of Hungarian soprano Judit Molnar, Brieley Cutting on piano, and violinist Frank Fodor. The afternoon's repertoire will include the gorgeous lilting waltzes of Strauss and Shostakovich, the sparkling highs of Viennese operetta by Lehár and Schubert, and the uplifting excitement of Brahms, Monti and Bernstein and Bizet. The classical music ensemble has recently completed a series of well received concerts for the 4MBS Classic FM Radio Station – ‘2018 Festival of Classics’. Directed by Frank Fodor, the show was originally conceptualised during a return visit to Japan where Frank and Judith were performing. Frank says the show is a smorgasbord of Viennese waltzes, dances and opera from the old-world capital of classical music. “Both Judit and I have Hungarian origin and so we recognised that Viennese style is very close to our hearts. We realized that by combining our talent for classical music and passion for intimate concert experiences we could provide audiences with an entertaining and memorable concert experience,” explained Frank. Tickets are $25 and available online (via trybooking.com/WXHO), via 3166 9067 and on the door. More details are on Facebook@ straussindahaus or www.straussindahaus.com.

Music in Maleny in August

This month music in Maleny will come alive with the Maleny Music Festival on the weekend beginning Friday August 31 at 4pm. If you don’t know this festival, let me assure you that it is one of the finest, and this year is looking to be the best yet with its wonderful line up of acts. There are three main stages (all under cover) and lots of workshops, street artists and smaller stages and great food and activity for the three days, including a Kids' Program. Musically almost all tastes will be catered for – along with folk and world music, blues and jazz, there is reggae and pop, poetry, dance and comedy. Artists include: The Fergies, Martin Pearson, Hillbilly Goats, The Jar, Cloudstreet, Rob Longstaff, Dub Zoo, Barleyshakes, Cigany Weaver, Sweet Chilli, Estampa, Bearfoot, Jenny Fitzgibbon, My Nightingale, The Loveys, Fred Smith Trio, Mufassa and the list goes on. People can camp (southerners don’t mind the cold, and if you mix your night with a drop or two of fine wine, you may not notice it either)! Check the festival out at www.malenymusicfestival.com. Tix, including camping and powered sites for vans, can be bought online. Just started in Maleny is a community music program I run on Wednesday nights at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre in Bicentenary Lane. Called Maleny Music, the program is based around the building of music skills, an appreciation of music psychology and how it can assist the individual’s performance, and playing in an ensemble or singing group. Each session begins with an hour of skill development, and then continues with ensembles being formed and songs auditioned, jammed on and rehearsed. Interested participants will later be able to perform these songs at public events. And, as there has been a reasonable amount of interest expressed in song writing, once a month a Wednesday night will be given over to building song writing skills and sharing your original songs with like-minded. There is no age or talent restrictions for Maleny Music. The musical direction of the program will to a large degree be dictated by the interest of the participants. It is a three hour session beginning at 7pm, and entry is by donation. If you’d like to go on our emailing list, contact me at whitickerm@bigpond.com. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. If you would like to find out more contact him on 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

Business feature

Let me be your personal trainer for your skin! A lot of people ask me what they can do to improve their skin. Here are my five essential things you should incorporate to improve your biggest organ's health. Number 1 is vital for skin protection and antiageing and without it the rest won’t be as effective. Numbers 2 to 5 are no less important, all equally essential for glowing, healthy skin. Our skin is such a vital organ and regular salon facial treatments will benefit your skin health and assist with more effective product penetration, not to mention a healthier glow. Building up your skincare collection is the key; book your free consultation NOW!! Starting from $75 for a quality facial treatment designed to detox, exfoliate and hydrate. This treatment is ideal every 3-4 weeks.

What are the top 5 best things you can do to improve your skin’s health? 1. Most important thing – wear a SPF during the day! Even if you work inside, fluorescent lights admit UV too. Look for the words “zinc, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide” in the ingredients. Zinc has less interaction with the cells and should be patted into the face avoiding your eye area, unless using mineral makeup with natural SPF filters. 2. Use quality skincare products. It is a proven fact that cosmeceutical products penetrate deeper into the skin layers. Yes they may be more expensive, but take into account that they are made from more concentrated ingredients and lasting results are achieved. Less product is used compared to cosmetic products therefore sometimes even saving you money. 3. Correct skin cleaning / cleansing twice daily, morning and night. I rarely meet anyone who cleans their skin correctly, therefore not achieving a full pathway for product penetration results. 4. Regular salon facial treatments. Facials, peels, diamond microdermabrasion, crystal blasting (medical grade resurfacing), skin needling, and advanced combo treatments are all available at SCST. 5. Establish a great home skin care routine, using the correct products for your skin conditions.

5 daily steps (morning and evening) 1. Double cleanse skin, don’t forget your neck and chest area for all steps 2. Tone or spritz the skin 3. Eye cream 4. Serum, everywhere but the eyes 5. Moisturiser / SPF, everywhere but the eyes Weekly Weekly try to: • Apply a facial mask suitable for your skin type / skin condition. • Exfoliate (after cleansing) 2-3 times a week. NOTE: Wear mineral makeup as it is hypoallergenic and won’t clog the pores allowing the skin to breathe, look for “zinc” in the ingredients for sun protecting filters. Monthly Once a month book for a salon facial treatment. These treatments performed regularly will improve your skin's appearance and ability to absorb products more effectively. Deep exfoliation and hydration with anti-ageing results, are a great monthly investment for your new glowing skin.

Offering sophisticated face and body treatments catering to all needs.

Environment Serious savings stack up as solar farm turns one

One year ago the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm started feeding power into the grid and the latest data shows this game-changer project is far exceeding all expectations. Sunshine Coast Acting Mayor Tim Dwyer said the ambitious project aimed to save $22 million over 30 years, offset 100% of council’s energy use and reduce the region’s carbon footprint. “The Sunshine Coast Solar Farm has saved council $1.7 million – more than double the amount we’d hoped for in the first year,” Cr Dwyer said. “We have met our offset goal as well – offsetting more than 100% of council’s energy use across all our facilities and operations. “We’ve generated more than 26,300 megawatt hours of energy in 12 months. To put that into perspective, the average Australian home uses around six megawatt hours per year. “We’ve saved more than 20,500 tonnes in carbon emissions – the equivalent of taking about 4,300 cars off the road for one year. “Council’s solar farm project has also received three prestigious awards for boosting productivity through infrastructure, sustainability excellence and planning excellence. “Our council is the first local government in the country to deliver a solar farm. Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson said the council wanted to help residents make great energy choices and savings. “Over the next six months, we’ll be pulling together independent information from trusted experts and sharing that with our residents and businesses,” Cr Robinson said. “We want to help our community learn how to reap maximum savings from their existing solar PV system, what renewable options are available, how to choose an energy provider and how to reduce their home's energy usage. “During September, council will host a range of sessions in libraries across the region as well as share information on our website and social media.” A live data feed is available at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Friends of Mary Cairncross Association For locals who may not know how the Rainforest of Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve was originally established, it was part of an original selection of land taken up in 1878. Back in 1902, members of the Hon. A.J. Thynne’s family acquired the selection. The cleared land was used for farming and there was light logging of the standing rainforest. Andrew Thynne and his wife Mary (nee Cairncross) had five daughters and four sons. Mary died on 18 April 1918 and Andrew on 27 February 1927. Incidentally, this day exactly 90 years later, was the opening of the new Rainforest Discovery Centre. Family members continued to farm the selection and light logging of the reserve was continued until 1937. Fortunately for local residents and visitors, approximately 40 hectares of rainforest was transferred to the Council in 1941, for “preservation, conservation and exhibition of the natural Flora and Fauna”. Those 40 hectares were the foundation of the reserve that we know and love today. The Rainforest Discovery Centre team are currently running a series of events and speakers on the theme of ‘After Dark’ until October 7. One such free event entitled ‘Who Stole the Night?’ will be held at 3pm4.30pm on August 16. For those with an eye on the sky, USQ Adjunct Professor and Sydney Observatory consultant astronomer Dr Nick Lomb will pose the question “who stole the night?” and will examine the challenges of outdoor light in our cities and towns. For more information or bookings (which are essential) go to https://events.sunshinecoast.qld.gov. au/Event?eventID=15750. People interested in joining the Friends can do so at the Discovery Centre. The annual fee is just $10. Photo courtesy of Gae Smith

Tax Time Beware of tax scams

Some tips to stay safe:

The Sunshine Coast Police want to remind the public that scammers are sending out emails telling people that they are eligible for a tax return. The email asks you to click on a link to claim your refund but this link takes you to a form which looks like it comes from myGov and asks for your details. The police want to remind the public that the ATO and myGov will never send an email or SMS asking you to click on a link and provide login, personal and financial information. So, if you do receive such an email do not click on any links or open any attachments.

• Be suspicious of messages offering you a tax refund in return for a fee, or ‘confirmation’ of your details. • Login to your official myGov account to check your status or contact your registered tax professional. • Do not click on links in emails or text messages claiming to be from myGov. myGov will never send you a text, email or attachment with hyperlinks or web addresses. • Don’t open messages if you don’t know the sender, or if you’re not expecting them. • Be suspicious of messages that aren’t addressed directly to you, or don’t use your correct name.

• Login to your official myGov account by typing the web address into your browser, to check your inbox for any legitimate emails. • The messages you get in your official myGov Inbox are secure and it is safe to open links included in myGov Inbox messages. • If you’re ever unsure about the validity of a tax related message or phone call, contact the ATO Scam Hotline on 1800 008 540, or visit ato.gov.au/scams (Stay Smart Online). The QPS encourages everyone to register with scam watch to receive information on malicious emails which trick people into sharing personal information or to download malware.

4 resolutions for home buyers this new financial year January 1 is generally the time we most commonly make resolutions for diets, fitness, careers and relationships. But does it make sense to make financial resolutions at this time too? When the new financial year rolls around, you’ve just submitted your tax return and got your finances in order. Now, it’s time to plan ahead. If you’re a home buyer, here are some resolutions you should consider making this new financial year. 1. Implement a budget: If you don’t already have a budget, it’s time to sort one! If you do, lets look at it again to

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

see if there’s anything you can tweak. If your planning to buy a new home in the next few years? See if there are any expenses you could minimise to save up that deposit. 2. Improve your financial literacy: Did the end of the 2017-18 financial year cause you a great deal of headache? Make sure the next one doesn’t by improving your financial literacy. You could check out the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and ASIC’s MoneySmart websites for valuable tips and information, or ask your mortgage adviser. Give yourself the gift of knowledge. In the case of

financial literacy, it literally pays! 3. Boost your super: Consider bumping up your super contributions this financial year. Not only will it mean your retirement savings get a boost, but if you’re a first home buyer you could also be increasing your chances of entering the property market. Changes to superannuation legislation mean you can put some of your super towards your first property purchase. The First Home Super Saver Scheme allows you to make voluntary super contributions of up to $15,000 per year that you can use to buy your first home.

4. Seize those opportunities: Whether it’s refinancing your mortgage, finally making a start on those renovations, or taking advantage of the recent first home buyer grants and concessions to buy your first home – just do it! Contact Teresa Harrison today to find out how to get started!

You Said It SCEC welcomes council vote on Palmview land

The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) welcomes councillors' support for recommendations to have land at Palmview retained for conservation and flood storage. These parcels have significant ecological and habitat values, function as wildlife corridors and are almost entirely flood prone. They form important linkages with the nearby Mooloolah River National Park and Lower Mooloolah Environmental Reserve and support the hydrology necessary for the health of these conservation areas and function of the floodplains. The robust assessments contained in Council Officer reports provided for the July 19 Sunshine Coast Council meeting were thorough and detailed reasons why they are not suitable for urban purposes. These parcels were part of future urban investigation areas coming out the controversial renegotiation of the Palmview Structure Plan which delivered concessions on top of existing, generous development approvals. The review process (not a development application) gave ample opportunity for landowners to put their case forward via a special condition relating to ecological importance and flood vulnerability. Assessments were subsequently undertaken against agreed criteria. Due to significant biophysical constraints in this area, the landowners have clearly not demonstrated these parcels could be developed for urban purposes nor override natural hazards and risks for proposed uses which are already catered for in the approved Palmview Structure Plan. The sound recommendation by council staff, supported by a majority of councillors, reflected this. While SCEC acknowledges the landowners have another opportunity to make further submissions on the Draft Determination in the next couple of months, these parcels should be consolidated and protected as conservation areas within the natural floodplain. Yesterday I received a call – once again from a male with a sub-continent accent – telling me he was calling from the NBN and that our internet would be cut off today (July 24) so we could be connected to the NBN. Apparently NBN rollout is starting in Maleny at present, although from what I have been able to find out, it is only the central area of Maleny that this applies to and we are well out of the central area. When I started to argue with the caller, saying we had received no prior notification and demanding to speak to a senior person, he told me he was “only a technical person” and he hung up. Basing my judgment on countless similar calls over the past months and years, I assumed this was yet another effort to scam innocent people. But as I am extremely concerned that older people, perhaps living on their own, may well be frightened by this sort of call (as indeed I was, at least initially), I feel that people should be warned to be very wary of calls from Indian-accented callers telling them about the NBN. I have tried without success to contact the NBN by phone, both on their national number and at Caloundra which is apparently the local office for the Maleny rollout. The national number told me there was an unprecedented number of calls and 18

wait time would be very long (when does that not happen when one rings a company or government body?), and when I tried the Sunshine Coast Council to ask if they knew the Caloundra number, I got the same reaction. I really want to make locals aware of what is going on in the NBN space. Helen Evans Maleny

Common sense prevails

In a victory for fairness and common sense, Johanna van Genderen has won her battle with council, in court, to display hanging baskets out the front of her Kenilworth dress shop – without having to fork out exorbitant fees for the 'privilege'. It is a good news story. The absurd amount of money the council expected her to hand over – $1,640 – as well as the lengths the council went to, including sending up drones to take aerial photographs of her shop (on a Sunday), twice confiscating the baskets and generally harassing her, raises the issue of where ratepayer dollars are being spent and what on earth the council thinks their role is in the community. The Sunshine Coast Council is surely at a crossroads. The upper echelon can continue to pander to its big developer mates, creating appallingly planned new housing developments and getting excited about schemes to build casinos, or it can start considering the people that live here, including the numerous small businesses, many who are struggling, yet providing services and enriching our community life. Jon Woodlands Cambroon

Residents need their personal space

Is this proposed rooming development at Landsborough going to be used as a half-way house for drug dependent people, who are going to need an on-site manager or people who cannot provide their own food? Surely if it is just for low income people who cannot afford ‘normal housing’, they will not need an on-site manager, nor food provided. Another issue of concern is who pays for the use of electricity and water? I am in a single use household, and my electricity consumption is well below the average for other single households. Why should someone who is careful in their consumption of utilities have to pay their share towards excessive users? Whatever happened to Housing Commission flats for low income people? At least they had their own independent living, kitchen and laundry facilities, giving them their own privacy. I have seen a small garage converted to a granny flat. It had everything required – a small fully equipped kitchen; a shower, toilet and laundry; a separate bedroom with double bed and storage; and a lounge and TV area. It may have only been 7m x 7m – tiny by anyone's standards, but at least it gave the occupant the dignity of their own independence and privacy, allowing them their self-respect and being in control of their own lives. Giving occupants this far greater respectable way of living will have a much better impact on the surrounding neighbours and community in general. Mayor Jamieson, councillors, and John Borthwick as Principal Development Planner, please have some consideration for the lives of these people who are needing cheaper accommodation. They deserve to live with as good quality of life as possible, not be degraded to what would be like living in a prison with possibly a manager overseeing their lives. Please help keep

Tip vouchers?

I have just got my rates notice – how about the Sunshine Coast Council supply ratepayers with either tip vouchers like other councils or what about a yearly roadside rubbish collection? A lot of us don't have trailers at our disposal or the money to pay at the tip. We pay our rates, how about some incentives for ratepayers or is it all about tourism? Loved their separate little brochures in with the rates, would appreciate tips vouchers – something we can use. Sue Willmott Beerwah

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast Horizon Festival 2018 program unveiled This is a very exciting time for the Sunshine Coast with the Horizon Festival about to kick off. Council recently unveiled an impressive 2018 program catering to the popular, emerging and experimental genres. There’s so much variety in the program this year – you can dip your toes in, or really immerse yourself and step outside your comfort zone. There are free and ticketed events across the region. Visit the website www.horizonfestival.com. au to view the full program and plan your days across the 10 day festival. You can also pick up a printed copy of the 51 page brochure at council’s customer contact centres and libraries. Give my office a call on 5420 8987 as we’re also happy to post you a copy!

Improving pathways As our railway townships continue to grow, one of my focuses is to keep improving our pathway networks. I receive many requests on the need for footpath extensions or missing links. Every section helps, with the most recent funding for Hardwood Road in Landsborough. Utilising Divisional funds, the initial aim is to connect a pathway to the bus-stop and town; ultimately it would be good to create a pathway network that includes the local park. In the end, it’s all about providing an attractive and safer way to move around our growing residential area for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Bankfoot House Sesquicentenary Celebrations In 2018, we are celebrating the 150 year anniversary of the founding of Bankfoot House by pioneers William and Mary Grigor. The house was first established as the lunch stop and staging post for the Cobb & Co route from Brisbane to the Gympie goldfields, then it served as a post office, accommodation house and supply store. To celebrate this important milestone, a program of special events are being held with the next event being 'Cobb & Co' which will be held on Sunday August 26, 10am-noon. This will take you back in time to the pioneer era where guest speakers including Jeff Powell, curator of Cobb & Co Museum and Steve Ralph, Spirit of Cobb & Co will provide insightful stories about this epoch. Having attended the opening events myself, I can highly recommend attending the next two special events being held in August and October.

Meet and Greet – Landsborough The next session is planned for Thursday August 23 from 10am-noon at Landsborough. Drop by to discuss any local or regional council topics. The venue is still to be confirmed but keep an eye on my Facebook page, phone my office on 5420 8987 or keep an eye out in the ‘What’s Happening’ section closer to the date. State Member for Caloundra Mooloolah Valley Men’s Shed is one step closer After nearly two years of negotiations with Education Queensland, the Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc (MVCA) had a huge win last week when they finally received permission to construct a Men’s Shed at the rear of the community centre’s land. Due to the centre’s current position on land owned by Education Queensland, all developments need to be approved by EQ before any plans can be undertaken. I recently spoke with the association’s secretary Anita Verwayen about where the dream of a Mooloolah Men’s Shed began and she told me that the original idea came from her husband and MVCA Vice-President Bernie Verwayen OAM. Anita advised, “Bernie felt there was nothing in the Mooloolah Valley area for local men, yet there are many issues which they are facing such as unemployment, Fly-In Fly-Out workers who lost jobs, marriage breakdowns, drug and alcohol addiction, and depression. "Bernie thought a Men’s Shed would give local men a focus and allow them to form good friendships, network and give them a place they felt safe talking. All this could help to alleviate social isolation and loneliness, which can lead to mental health issues for some of these men down the track. Transport can be a big issue for locals so getting out to other Men’s Sheds isn’t always an option. Having a local Men’s Shed would mean we have a better chance of reaching and supporting Mooloolah-based men. We have many retired tradesmen who we hope in future will be able to work with younger unemployed men who are trying to get a foothold in the industry. They could provide them with practical skills and advice they need to help them get a job. “Now that we have verbal permission to construct the shed, the next step will be to secure funding. We will be applying for grants but we also hope that there will be local businesses and community members who are willing to support this program.” Many people would be aware of just how hard the MVCA Committee work to provide vital support services to the local community and the start-up of this Men’s Shed is just another example of their tireless dedication. The MVCA will help develop the Men’s Shed and secure funding with the aim for a Mooloolah Valley Men’s Shed Committee to be formed so the shed can become incorporated, self-sufficient and selfmanaged. If you would like to become involved in the Mooloolah Men’s Shed, the MVCA will be holding an open public meeting on August 4 at 2pm at the Mooloolah Public Hall, 42 Bray Street, Mooloolah Valley. Congratulations to everyone who has helped the Association, this will be a tremendous addition for the Mooloolah community hub. caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au Search us on Facebook Mark McArdle MP

Hinterland Kids Kindy for all ages

Grandparents Day is always a highlight on the Beerwah Kindy calendar and leading up to the day the children had been busy planning activities, games, and creating a huge welcome banner. Beerwah Kindy’s Miss Beccy said the day is all about celebrating the vital and irreplaceable role grandparents play in the children’s lives, their families, and the wider community. “The children all agreed the highlight of the day was dancing with their grandparents and sharing a yummy morning tea,” she said.

100 Days of Prep

Heather Dodwell and Kerry Jervis show off their new shirts celebrating 100 days of Prep with students Willow Rose and Eli Austin

All the Prep children at Glasshouse Christian College celebrated their wonderful growth and achievements in 100 days recently. There were fun activities in each of the three Prep classrooms and the students moved from room to room so they could have a turn at everything. In one classroom students decorated and created crowns declaring ‘100 days brighter’ and proudly wore them throughout the day. Other activities included making bookmarks, creating 100 dot paintings and solving 100 piece puzzles. However, the most popular craft was decorating biscuits with ‘100’ on them using fruit loops and musk sticks. Teachers and assistants joined the celebration by wearing special shirts commemorating the day and adding to the festive atmosphere.

Contributed by Helen White The Prep Students at Glass House Mountains State School have been very busy getting some hands-on learning in their garden this term. Each week the classes are able to spend time in the garden learning about nature, how things grow, recycling opportunities and enjoying the fruits of their harvests. They have made delicious food from the garden including pesto, stuffed potatoes, and yummy salads as well as picking many vegetables for snack time. They have enjoyed working and learning about recycling, with the school’s Garden Club parents. A couple of other highlights have been producing a scarecrow version of Peter Rabbit and Mr McGregor, and making gifts for the parents that included wind chimes for home gardens.

Introducing Dee McCaan Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre recently welcomed Dee McCaan to their team of early education professionals. Dee is a seasoned childcare professional with over 20 years industry experience, and she will be stepping into the role of Centre Director. Having spent eight years working at a Director level, Dee has most recently been working as an Education Field Advisor providing locational support to other Directors. Growing up around the Glass House and Beerwah area, she is thrilled to be returning to her ‘home ground’ and looks forward to focusing all her energy into working with a team at one location. Dee will be taking over the role from Ange Hardey who will continue to remain on at the Centre. Ange plans to take a step back from her previous role as Director to allow more time to dedicate to continuing her early childcare studies. Ange says she is excited to welcome Dee on board to be part of the Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre ‘family’ and looks forward to working closely with her over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition into the new role. “Dee and I will be working together to continue to expand our great services and programs here at the Centre. Encouraging sustainability and building community relationships along with our commitment to education and quality childcare will continue to be a key focus going forward,” says Ange. Dee is passionate about advocating for the best possible learning and development opportunities for children. The mother of four and former foster mum is well placed to lead the team and she looks forward to connecting with the Centre

families, children and the local community. Dee says that when she first came to have her interview at the Centre she was incredibly impressed with the passion and dedication she saw from the educators, as well as the ‘great vibe’ at the place. She also appreciates the obvious investment in staff shown by the Centre’s parent company, Queensland Childcare Services, and their commitment to providing healthy food and nutrition. “I was also really impressed with the strong sense of community connection especially with the local schools and the involvement and interest from the families towards the activities and programs we have here at the Centre,” explains Dee. One area that Dee is keen to develop further is the ‘Schoolies’ before and after school care program. Already a popular long running program at the Centre, Dee is looking forward to working closer with surrounding schools to ensure the program integrates well with current curriculum. ‘Schoolies’ care is available during term time from 6.30am until 6.30pm and provides a ‘homework club’, meal options and localised school drop off and afternoon pickup for Beerburrum, Beerwah and Glass House State Schools as well as Glasshouse Christian College. With their own dedicated room and area, the ‘Schoolies’ even have their own much-loved class pet – ‘Patchy’ the guinea pig! In line with recent changes to childcare legislation, ‘Sessional Care’ is now available at the Centre and is supported with Child Care Subsidy options (CCS). Families can now book into either six hours, nine hours or a full day of care.

Dee and Patchy Dee says that this is great for families as they can now choose the session that best suits their needs. “Sessional Care offers much more flexibility for families. Now parents and carers can choose a session of care that suits both theirs and the child’s needs and pay accordingly."

Community Callout Donations accepted at the Centre of any items suitable for an eight-year-old boy and ten-year-old girl whose family have lost everything recently in a fire.

Offering hope to Parkinson’s patients

Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital is helping to restore hope and quality of life for Parkinson’s disease patients through its movement disorder clinic. The unique specialist led multidisciplinary clinic treats patients with complex movement problems, such as end stage Parkinson’s disease, and determines a care plan based on individual needs. Cooran resident Noel Smith has had monthly appointments at the clinic for the past two years to treat Parkinson’s disease, and has seen a great improvement in his ability to walk and talk. “The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease make it feel like you are trapped in your own body, and it’s very frustrating not being able to perform simple tasks like putting on your shoes and socks,” Mr Smith said. Through consultation with the clinic, he has been fitted with a duodopa pump, which involves surgery to place a pumping device in the patient’s stomach, to slowly administer a gel-like dual medication, to treat the effects of Parkinson’s disease. For some patients, this medication is proving very successful,” Mr Smith said. “I have these moments of elation now when all the joints and my arms and legs just work. Some days are better than others, but overall, I’ve had a significant improvement in my quality of life since attending the clinic.” Maleny’s Movement Disorder Clinic is run by Dr Tony Tampiyappa, the Clinical Director of Stroke, Neurology, Geriatric and Rehabilitation Services at the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. Dr Tampiyappa says the multidisciplinary approach to patient care is what makes the clinic so successful. “The clinic provides a one-stop service for the assessment and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, as well as access to available community services,” Dr Tampiyappa said. “Patients see the specialist as well as the full allied health team including, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech pathologist, dietician and social worker, depending on their need. This can occur in one visit or spread over a few days. When a patient leaves the clinic, they have a complete care plan including education and follow up packaged for them.” Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive disorder of the central nervous system which results in the loss of coordinated function of the body’s muscles and movement.

Natalie would love for you to come along to her upcoming fundraiser. She has organised a spectacular buffet lunch at the Wung Nam Thai Restaurant on the Esplanade at Caloundra on Sunday August 12 from 12.30pm. Celebrity Chef Matt Golinski has already confirmed that he will be part of this special lunch, and the inspiring CEO and founder of Hair Aid, Selina Tomasich, will be a guest speaker on the day. Tickets are only $50 per person which include a delicious Asian buffet lunch, a complementary glass of champagne on arrival, and a fabulous take home goodie bag with lovely gifts for the ladies. Natalie is also promising that there will be a monster raffle with some awesome prizes already confirmed. From the churches In midsummer I fantasised about the coolness of winter… but I am not so sure that it fulfilled my expectations. I have decided that winters are to be tolerated as a necessity and are not in any way a delight. However, those from the northern climes may totally disagree with me. Just the other day I was walking with my long track suit, plus a jumper and jacket and saw a man in shorts and a T-shirt. I said, “Aren’t you feeling the cold?” He replied, “This is not cold… I’m from Dublin!” Winter seems to be a time of pruning. In some countries it appears as if all the vegetation has died. But in a similar way, countries, organisations, churches and even individuals have periods of winter. In a spiritual sense it has been called ‘The dark night of the soul’. However, winter has a purpose and the more severe the winter the more verdant springtime appears. The dark night of the soul results in a deeper understanding of our spiritual paths and a closer relationship with our ever present, ever loving and guiding Heavenly Father. I read an interesting comment the other day. It

Costa Stathakis Glasshouse Country Uniting Church said that when we look at a gravestone you will see the person’s name, date of birth, a dash, and date of death. The name is significant; it is specific. Between the date of birth and death there is a dash. The dash encompasses all that transpired in that person’s life. Many summers and winters… and then the date of death. The end. Or is it? In these past months I have encountered people who have related their near-death experiences. Each was different yet held incredible similarities. Words such as light, unbelievable peace, and clearly after their return, a total lack of fear of death. Many books such as ‘Life After Life’ by Dr Raymond Moody have researched the phenomenon. In the book ‘Proof of Heaven’ there is a vivid description by a neurosurgeon, Alexander Eben, who had heard accounts of it, but did not really believe that it was real until he himself experienced it. Death and resurrection in nature… death and resurrection of humans. Worth thinking about, isn’t it?

Dine In Take Out with Lea Parkes

Henry & Co

While I don’t consider myself an expert on many topics, I don’t feel at all like I am bragging when I say one I am quite knowledgeable about is eating out for breakfast, particularly in Glasshouse Country. One of my favourite locations is Henry & Co, who are open every day from 7am and who have a great range of options depending on how you are feeling and how much time you have available to enjoy what I consider the most important meal of the day. Recently Brownie and I dropped in for a pre-work breakfast meeting. Brownie went for one of their ‘Brekkie Burgers’ – the Chorizo & Egg Burger – and I tried one of my favourites from the ‘All Day Breakfast’ listing – the Smashed Avo with a Poached Egg add on. Both were great options! I also love that you aren’t just limited to breakfast in the morning, and if you just need a little space filler, they also have their ‘Lite Bites’ options of BLT English Muffin or Bacon and Egg English Muffin and, even though I consider myself an expert on their menu, I didn’t realise that you can also place your order through Menulog and pick it up when it is ready. Just log in to Menulog and search Landsborough, and away you go. They even tell you how long the wait will be. This is definitely a winner for me, as one of my regular trips is between our office in Glass House Mountains and meetings in Maleny. Now I can just do my lunch order on Menulog and pick it up on my way through!

Diverse cast for classic play

Maleny Players’ regular troupe of actors is enhanced by some talented newcomers in the upcoming production of '12 Angry Men'. This play about a divided jury involves a dozen characters with different backgrounds, personalities and Angry man Phil Boyle makes motives. They are cooped up together his point in rehearsal with John in a hot room and have to decide Marsden and Dale Stanton whether an accused man will go free or face the death penalty. To bring to life this mixed bunch, a diverse group of actors has been assembled, representing a wide range of ages and both genders (this version of the play includes a few women jurors). Well-known local Robert Walton is cast as the juror played by Henry Fonda in the film of the play. Shelley Love is one of his antagonists, an intelligent and rational person who is still hard to convince. Phil Boyle from Woodford, whose debut with the Players was in the recent one-act play 'Unsinkable', is explosive in the part of the angriest man. Another new face is Dale Stanton, who studied theatre at university. Dale is perfecting his accent as the refugee from war-torn Europe who brings to the jury an outsider’s perspective. Phil Simmons and John Marsden have mainly featured in Maleny Singers productions. Fresh from a leading role in ‘Iolanthe’, Phil is exploring a very different style of stage acting as he gets into the character of the bigoted juror. The tension builds in this gripping drama as contesting arguments are put forth and emotions run high. Can careful reason and logic prevail over raw feelings? When: Friday August 10 at 7pm, Saturday August 11 at 2pm and 7pm, and Sunday August 12 at 2pm Where: The Playhouse, Maleny Showgrounds, Maleny Stanley River Road. Tickets: $20 (at Imelda's shoe shop) on Maple Street, Maleny or at malenyplayers.org/bookings.

In the Garden Orchid Grove on show Vegie Notes

Edamame Beans

Last month I trashed the idea of trying to grow broad beans and I suggested growing

edamame beans instead. So, here’s a little more about edamame (or soy) beans. I was put onto them by David Zimmermann – the dentist at Mooloolah Dental. He spoke with Lea at one of her appointments about growing edamame beans during the hot summer months. He said that he found them a really good alternative at a time of the year when the caterpillars, grasshoppers and other bugs and diseases are rampant, making traditional vegie growing problematic. And being a legume, they put nitrogen back into the soil in preparation for autumn and winter crops. I thought this was a pretty good idea. Edamame beans are picked and eaten when the pods are green – whereas soybeans are allowed to mature and are harvested as a dry seed. They are generally steamed or boiled in salty water for a short time, allowed to cool and then the leathery pods are peeled and the larger green seeds eaten as a snack or as an accompaniment to a dish. They are technically a warm season crop but can be grown in our winter if you have a sunny protected spot. They need the same growing conditions as other peas and beans – slightly alkaline soil with good organic matter content and don’t add animal manure or other high nitrogen materials. They need warm soil to germinate. So, if you’re growing them in winter, maybe cover the ground loosely with black plastic to help raise the soil temperature. Like other beans, only water once when you plant the seed, then don’t water again until they’re up and growing, otherwise the seed can rot in the soil. If you have trouble finding a seed source, the Maleny company Green Harvest (www.greenharvest.com.au) is a good start. In summer, plant the seed 5cm deep (3cm deep in winter) 20-30cm apart with 30cm row separation. They will grow quickly once up and going and grow to a height of about 1m or more. Their flowering is in response to daylight length – they flower better when the days start to get shorter, meaning they do better in summer into autumn. But they will still flower in winter, just not as prolifically. They are fairly resistant to pests and diseases but can be affected by root rot if they stay too wet. They take about three months to mature to harvest stage, so be patient. After the pods fill out and you pick them, dig the plants back into the soil as a fantastic green manure. We enjoy eating edamame beans as a side dish when we have Asian-style foods like sushi or gyozas.

Nestled amongst the gum trees, like a hidden jewel, this award-winning garden showcases the exotic colour and rich beauty of one of the most highly coveted and intriguing of all flowering plants – the orchid. Created with love by owners Chris and Angel O’Dempsey, Orchid Grove shows just what can be done on a fairly standard block of land, with a bit of imagination, a lot of passion and plenty of hard work. Visitors to the garden during the weekend of Saturday-Monday, September 15-17 will be amazed at the interesting array of features in every hidden corner of every pathway. Garden owner Chris said they wanted a walk through the garden to feel like a walk through the bush or a rainforest. “Because it’s as close as we could get to a natural setting, our orchids have been established in a natural style – on logs, rocks and trees – which shows them off so much better than confining them all to pots," he said. Chris and Angel have also constructed a creek and some stunning waterfalls on the property, which create a wonderfully soothing soundtrack when you wander around. Time to just sit and take it all in is a bonus! “We often think that being in the midst of the garden we’ve created, surrounded by the sounds and smells of the bush, it’s hard to believe that you’re actually standing on an ordinary 1,000 square metre house block,” Chris said. Your visit to Orchid Grove will contribute funds to Heart Reach Australia, a medical humanitarian aid and children’s sponsorship organisation of which Chris is a director. Heart Reach Australia has been working in Vietnam for more than 28 years and currently is also introducing First Aid and CPR to high schools. Orchid Grove, located at 17 Barkston Court, Buderim, will opening from 9.30pm to 4.30pm from Saturday to Monday, September 15-17. Entry is $7 and children under 15 are free. For groups of 10 or more a special of $10 entry including morning tea is available. Phone 0418 246 888 or 5476 9444 to book in a time.

Plant of the month

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Rush-leaved wattle Acacia juncifolia

When in flower this is an extremely beautiful small shrub. If not flowering it could be mistaken for a totally different species as the phyllodes are long and narrow, resembling an Allocasuarina rather than a wattle. The name “juncifolia” comes from the rush-like leaves. Acacia juncifolia is a slender upright shrub found on rocky montane slopes and rarely grows more than two

metres tall. Lovely golden ball flowers appear in winter and spring and the plants can be seen on Wild Horse Mountain and on the Jack Ferris Lookout. Wattles are a wonderful source of food for wildlife. Bees and other insects are attracted to the lovely blooms, and gliders feed on the sap of some species. When the seeds appear, they are an important food source for birds. Because of the difficulty in obtaining seed for this uncommon species, we are unable to grow it in the GMAN plant nursery. However we do stock other small wattles species suitable for the home garden.

Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? Visit www.gman-inc.com.au. For information on GMAN Nursery sales please call Gwen 5493 0029 or Wendy 5493 0120.

Joyce Mowing and Gardening is a local family run business owned by Daniel and Sally Joyce. They offer punctual, tidy, high quality work with brilliant attention to detail and great communication with clients. Offering a range of lawn and garden care services, the business has been running for five years and services the Maleny, Montville, Beerwah, Glass House, Peachester, Woodford and surrounding areas. Options include mowing (both push and rideon), which is very popular with clients especially during the summer months, hedge trimming and large whipper-snipping jobs. Regular garden maintenance including pruning, mulching, fertilising and establishing new gardens forms a large part of their work, and they also do a lot of garden clean ups as one-offs or on a more regular basis. They work hard and genuinely love their clients’ gardens! When it comes to weed control, they offer alternatives to glyphosate, with organic weed control options for areas where children play, where health issues require this or for bee and butterfly responsible clients. Both Dan and Sally come from families of keen gardeners, so their passion for gardening and knowledge of garden practices was already well established before starting their business. They also employ Dave who brings an extensive knowledge of horticultural practices and excellent attention to detail to all his work. Contact 0429 999 613 or follow Joyce Mowing and Gardening on Facebook.

Contributed by Brenda Briese Thursday, July 26: we played a Stableford ‘with a twist’ with a field of 56 ladies. It was the ‘Greenskeepers’ Revenge’ and they were looking for revenge. The course was set up with many obstacles, including machinery on the fairways, hurdles in front of, and impediments on the greens. One green was covered with dry leaves! You couldn't move anything! But it was all a bit of fun. Many thanks to the greens staff for setting it up and removing obstacles. The day was kindly sponsored by Kathy Moffat and Beerwah Cosmetics, thank you.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover Fantastic winter weather made for some fabulous bowls outings at the club this week. We started the week with a wonderful afternoon of pairs when all the Hinterland clubs descend upon Maleny for our monthly pairs. Some excellent games were played over two rounds with Ray O and Lucy O coming out the winners for the day. Second round winners were from Mapleton. Well done, Brian and Ray. Thanks again to bowlers from Woodford and Kilcoy who also supported this monthly event. Maleny bowlers interested in playing in the away events, put your name on the board as all are welcomed in travelling to other clubs as a part of our Hinterland commitment to providing quality bowls and fun for all our members and visitors. Wednesday night was another great night with 32 bowlers enjoying the cooler weather, and loving the burgers and beer on tap. Thanks to all for spreading the word. Friday Scroungers was big last week with a full rink enjoying some close tussles. It’s a little

early to tip the potential winners for this new competition. Miles has allowed form to decide the limit of your handicap. The more you win the more he adjusts. Reminder to all about the earlier start and the lucky club draw is now at 5pm. Hopefully this will allow more to be here for the nibbles and draw. Next week sees the high school bowls competition start which will run mainly on Monday afternoons. Thanks to a long time sponsor of junior bowls, Les Fawkes, a meeting ensured this will continue. As this starts it just so happens Les has renamed his business to Maleny Paint Supplies. So, all the mums and dads who are doing those jobs around the house, go see Les. He will help you out just as he does with so many local groups. Les is just one of the many great sponsors in this town that helps us be what we want for the future. Remember, all sponsors need your support, so thank you Maleny. Help local clubs by shopping local. See you all on the green or in the club. Keep rolling up.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Great effort, Jaymes

Glasshouse Country Christian College student Jaymes Roser, who swims with the Maleny Swimming Club, was one of only four swimmers on the Sunshine Coast to be selected to represent Queensland at the National Swimming Titles last week. While swimming a personal best, he missed out on the national final by two hundredths of a second, placing him 9th in Australia. Currently in Grade 7 and having only been swimming competitively for the past two years, Jaymes says that his swimming heroes are Michael Phelps, and his dad Brendan, who also happens to be his swim coach. Jaymes’ mum Allison Roser said: “Brendan and I are so proud of Jaymes, his attitude and determination to qualify for nationals was inspiring to us especially through our family

tragedy as he lost his grandma last year and he says he swims and thinks of her a lot. “As parents we only strive as fast and as far as he wants and asks us to, so it’s really special to see him so happy and thriving in the water,” she said. “The support Jaymes has received to be able to get to nationals has been overwhelming, from Maleny Apex, the Maleny Trail Riders Club, Andrew Powell and our family and friends.” Jaymes recently received a $250 Local Hero grant from the Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, who said: “Watch this space Glass House, we have a future Olympic champion in our midst.”

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker The 25th birthday celebration of the club went brilliantly. The beautiful weather that we asked for could not have been better. More than forty people filled the four half courts that we had set up to enjoy about six hours of play, food, and conversation. Many were past and present

members but quite a few were from other clubs as far away as the Gold Coast and New Zealand. The three main forms of croquet were played as well as croquet-like games. The food was great. The company was fantastic. The play was fun. It was a great day. Thanks to all club members who worked so hard setting up beforehand and cleaning up afterwards. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the showgrounds. For details contact president Vince Carbery 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555. Athletics Carnival Contributed by Liz Traynor The Beerwah State School athletics carnival was held before the school holidays with students aged from nine to 12 years of age competing in a variety of events over the course of the day. The overall winner was Bluegum house, followed by Stanley, then Coochin, then Mellum. Stanley house was the winner of the march past and sportsmanship trophy.

Winners from the school carnival will now be eligible to compete at the Glasshouse District Athletics Carnival.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley It was a slow start for the Witta Wagtails – only winning one set out of four. However, they won two sets in the second half, but not enough points to secure a win against Maroochydore TTs, a sunny enjoyable winter’s day of tennis. Thanks to Gerry, Cynthia, Sonia and Pauline. A special thanks to Pauline for helping us out at the last minute. Whistlers played at Witta against Mooloolaba Legends. It was beautiful weather for tennis and everyone was happy to be on the court. We had close games, lots of rallies. Didn't get many games but every point was tight. Score was 17-44 games, 1-7 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Maree Hooley and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats had a bye. The Wompoos experienced another close tussle with the Kawana Koolers team. After being even after four sets the Wompoos moved ahead. They

were quickly put in their place, however retained a lead by two sets going into the last two doubles games. Victory was in our hands, eventually claiming the win by 6 games. A fun afternoon of competitive camaraderie was had by all. Thanks to the Kawana team for their sportsmanship and the post-match drinks. Our next game is against Gympie Silver at Gympie on August 26. Wikings played a strong Gympie team at home on Sunday in the Division 2 Veterans Tennis League. Gympie were the winners on the day - but a competitive match from the Wikings - Glenno, JB, Mikey, Andrew, Pauline and Libby. Final score Gympie 7 sets to Witta 5 sets. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm all welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Monday, July 23: Monthly 2 Bowl Triples, what a beautiful day for bowls with 42 players taking the green for two games of 15 ends. We had visiting teams from Donnybrook, Woodford and Nambour Heights, winners of the day were Geoff Jones and the boys from Woodford with 2 wins + 6 margin. Runners up were Michael Frost, Lyn Griffiths and Barry Kirk with 2 wins + 3 margin. Lucky draw went to Marilyn Podmore, Don Teirney and Allan Pashby. Would you believe in the 2nd game we had 3 draws which is somewhat unusual. Ladies Club Certified Triples: Margaret Beasley, Wendy Platt and Chris Freshwater defeated Noelle Dean, Joy Reason and Eileen Pierce 25-12. Saturday, July 28: Mens Pennant Round 4, Division 2 away to Caboolture Lakes. Glasshouse got off to a great start but Caboolture Lakes ran us down winning 2 of the 3 rinks with the final score 48-7. Next week’s game is away to Solander Lake. Division 4 away to Bongaree, a great win to the home side with both rinks having a win, final score 37-29. Next week’s game is away at Caboolture Lakes. Division 5 away to Caboolture Lakes, both teams won one rink each but Caboolture Lakes were the overall winners 29-43. Next week’s game is a tough one away at Woodford. Our Champion of Champions male 4’s team lost their semi-final against Bribie at Bribie 32-4. A big happy birthday to Millie Freshwater who hit the big 90 last Saturday, hope you had a great birthday and thanks to all that turned up last Wednesday for a game of bowls and cake. The Police Bowls day, the ‘Iona Challenge’, will be held Sunday, August 12. Please place your name down on the sheet at the club if you’re interested in playing, all welcome. Arrive by 12.30pm for a 12.45 - 1pm start. Cost is $12 with hot nibbles after the game. This day is sponsored by Terry and Liz Little and is the only Police Bowls day to be held at our club each year. Our AGM will be held Saturday, September 8, 10am at Club Glass House. It would be great if we could get some more people who are willing to help out. Nomination forms are available at the bowls club.

Then he says again: "Give me one more cookie... " The baker is getting angry now but gives him one anyway. He eats this one too. Now the baker is really mad, and he yells, "And where is your magic trick?!" John points at Dave and says: "In that guy's pocket!"

LEO July 23 – August 22 Even with six planets retrograde at various times the month brings you much to shine about, and pleasures to enjoy. Most planets are beaming their bright rays into your personal life. Some aspects with this retrograde period could spotlight flaws in plans concerning distant interests, including family, travel and legalities. Be cautious. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Your patience may be tested with six planets retrograde at various times over this month. Just use this time to review recent decisions. Take credit for your successes and finish all pending projects. You are going to be guided into the right action. There may be difficulty adapting easily into new quirky methods of some of your people or clients. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The month starts with the warmest reception and your current personal romantic destiny resides with your social circle, closest friendships and favourite causes. Be on your guard if somebody encouraged you to do something you have misgivings about. Outward actions cause unintended surprises, if not in your best interests. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 The week starts with the general warning that these are not the days to tempt fate or provoke others. Also, do not take provocative baits from others as it may end up in a brawl. Some of you would risk your personal safety as the planets see unwelcome use of knives and sharp objects. Adapt to changes over the weekend to fix things.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 An announcement may come after a confusing start to the month. Mercury goes direct on the 18th which will be delightfully friendly and romantic for you. A Mars and Uranus aspect makes for volatile days up to the weekend. Bold action can break new ground but under these planets can also be disruptive. Act only on risks worth taking! CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Destiny shows your current evolutionary path involves the resources you share with others. This includes intimacy, power and money, such as credit and debt and shared assets. A beam of light shines on your life regarding how well you get on with your parents. The planet Pluto is saying that if you hold grudges bad luck could follow. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You are heading into a heart to heart with a loved one, under a beautiful planetary injunction, all powered up by a Solar Eclipse in Leo. Relationships will speak to your heart’s desire, but the power is best in partnership. This position is strong over the next six months. Refrain from forcing issues and risky behavior. Accidents can result. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Retrograde Mercury with other planetary aspects are all powering up for a Solar Eclipse in Leo by the 11th. So, take on jobs that spotlight your special skills and abilities. Any pitfalls need careful manoeuvring as they could come from your own anxious subconscious mind. Avoid danger and interactions with aggressive people.

Dental Excel.... Dr Raj Kengaiha Dr Raj Kengaiha was originally educated in India and completed his Dental Degree at the prestigious Bangalore University in 1997, followed by working busy dental practices in India before moving with his family to Australia in 2013. Although interested in all aspects of dentistry, Dr Kengaiha has particular passions for endodontic (root canal treatment) and orthodontic (braces).

He is doing additional training in Orthodontics, participating in a Mini Residency which formed part of his Excellence of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (EODO) training. Raj has recently gained accreditation to provide Fastbraces orthodontic treatment – both simple and advanced.

Implants

Orthodontics

David and Finbarr have a great interest in the placing and restoring of dental implants and are constantly undergoing continuing education in the field. They have recently returned from the Dental XP world symposium on dental implants in Florida where 30 of the top implantologists in the world gave participants the benefit of their latest research and techniques which they could apply to the treatment of their patients. Implants can be used to restore function or cosmetics by filling gaps with implant crowns and bridges or to restrain those dentures which have a mind of their own.

Children in the developmental stages of their dentition are best served by being referred to a specialist orthodontist to guide them to a good result both functionally and aesthetically. However, there are many adult patients and older teenagers who are left with crooked or crowded front teeth who can benefit from the new technology of new orthodontic treatments such as FASTBRACES and INMAN ALIGNER. Raj and Finbarr, in suitable patients, are achieving excellent transformations. A consultation is free and will enable you to explore your options if you have concerns in this area.

Dentures

Bleaching

Dental Excel dentists still enjoy providing dentures, either partial or full, and aim to achieve both a good functional result but also dentures that provide as cosmetically pleasing a result for patients as possible. The dentist works in harmony with a very experienced technician so that between them they can achieve the best result. The correct extension and occlusal balance is of paramount importance for dentures to be wearable and the former is singularly missing in many dentures. Implants, where bone permits, can be life changing when used to stabilise and retain either partial or full dentures but must be viewed as a plus factor and not a substitute for well-constructed dentures. Fixed dentures are also now an alternative for many people.

Both home kit bleaching and in surgery ZOOM Tooth Whitening are available at Dental Excel.

Children Dental Excel welcomes our younger clients and also supports the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme for eligible 2-17 year olds. A dedicated child play area for littlies has recently been added in our Beerwah clinic.

Cosmetic

Payment Plan

For those patients who wish to improve the cosmetics of their smile, all options such as composite veneers and porcelain veneers in association with general bleaching, are available as well as cosmetic crowns where required. SNAP ON SMILES is a really innovative new cosmetic product which for many people is a very easy way of achieving a great smile without major dental work and can both cover existing teeth and fill gaps present. This may be a great short or long-term solution for many people.

Here at Dental Excel we understand that there are so many expenses in modern life which tend to push taking care of that precious dental health well down the list, yet healthy and attractive teeth are a great asset to us all and regular care very often prevents big problems down the line. Therefore, we have recently introduced a ‘NO INTEREST EVER’ payment plan so that patients can have the treatment they need now and do not have to wait, and then pay for the treatment in instalments after (conditions apply). For dental implants / orthodontics / cosmetics we offer a free patient assessment.
