Hi Everyone A lot seems to have happened since last week when I wrote my column, or maybe it is just with so much rain it seems like a long time ago – I guess that is where the expression as long as a wet week comes from? Anyway now instead of being in the lead up to one election we are in the lead up to two elections – both State and Local Government, which means there will be 80 days until the elections are over. So I am sure over the next 12 editions we will be having plenty of people sending in letters to the editor – to share their views with the rest of the community. I look forward to this – but just a reminder about how we like to operate at GCNews. For letters relating to candidates, if you have something to share with our readers, you have got to be willing to put your name to it and

have it printed in our pages. Also the letters page is not a forum for personal attacks – and libellous comments, it is about focusing on issues that are important in our community. And we will also be giving preference to letters that have something new to say – as at the end of the day it is also about keeping it interesting for the readers as well. So if you have got something to say, all you need to do is email it through to editorial@gcnews.com.au Regards,

The hub of the Peachester community, the Peachester Hall, will no longer be available for parties following a 16th birthday party that resulted in thousands of dollars of damage last weekend. The vandalism, which saw doors ripped from kitchen cupboards, holes punched in walls and bottles and glass smashed throughout the premises has left the hall custodians so outraged that they have made the difficult decision to limit the hall’s availability for private functions. Peachester Hall committee chair Bruce Page said it was with reluctance that the hall committee made the decision to no longer take bookings for parties or dances where alcohol would be served. Mr Page said the damage done to the hall on Saturday, January 21 was completely unacceptable.

Howard Walker and Bruce Page inspect the damage “We have tried over the years to cater for the youth of our community, however this has become increasingly difficult in recent times, and we have had a number of problems with some minority groups,” he said. “To protect the rights and interests of all those community groups who responsibly use our hall and enjoy this very good facility, we feel we are left with no alternative but to make this decision,” Mr Page said. It is thought the damage was done by a group of hoons who gatecrashed the party after details of the event were posted on Facebook. Officer in Charge of Beerwah Police, Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck said the vandalism was currently under police investigation. cont. on page 9

Our Australia Our hinterland residents have set a new benchmark amongst coast residents, taking out a swag of awards on Australia Day. On the eve of Australia Day, Sunshine Coast Council announced its annual Australia Day Award recipients, which included Peachester resident Gordon Howitt. Gordon took out the Sport and Recreation award for his commitment to orienteering. In his 60s, Gordon learnt how to draw orienteering maps using a specialised computer program and then established the Sunshine Orienteer’s Club. Mr Howitt has identified suitable areas for orienteering on the Sunshine

Coast and created high quality maps; introduced and developed Mountain Bike Orienteering; has mentored and coached younger orienteers and school children; is still in demand from organisers of Adventure Races for course setting and maps; crafted hundreds of beautiful wooden trophies awarded for navigation sports and as a competitor in this field, and has won numerous state and national titles.

Taking out the Outstanding Achievement Award (Posthumous) was the late Stan Tutt.

Ashley and Ailish started by phoning lots of young people to find out what they wanted to learn about and now they travel all over the country interviewing children and adults. They make videos on a range of topics from saving the whales to homelessness, war and global warming. All appear on their website. To date they have raised more than $10,000 for various causes including homelessness, conservation and wildlife. Taking out the Outstanding Achievement Award (Posthumous) was the late Stan Tutt. Stan Tutt was a writer, historian and environmentalist who sadly passed away in July last year aged 97. Stan made a huge contribution to researching and recording local history; wrote a historical column for a Sunshine Coast newspaper for 20 years; and was a key player in the creation of the Landsborough Museum and the Landsborough Historical Society. The Caloundra Branch of Sunshine Coast Libraries Local Studies Area is named in his honour. Mr Tutt was a founding member of the Sunshine Coast Environment Council and was recognised with an Order of Australia Medal in 1994.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Candidate

True commitment with the experience that counts! "Ann Ross is highly intelligent and has a sound knowledge of council procedures and budgeting. Ann cares about people and would go about solving constituents' problems in a logical and compassionate manner. She is articulate and, as our Councillor, would present constituents' concerns and opinions to the Council with tenacity and commitment. As a visionary person with a good imagination, Ann sees what the area needs and has the ability and tenacity to see projects through to completion." Jo Barrett-Beewah “It gives me great pleasure to support Ann Ross in her campaign to be elected as Councillor for Division 1. Ann has been a resident of this area for over 25 hears, firstly at Beerwah and now as a business owner with husband Jeff at Beerburrum. Through my involvement with Ann at Bankfoot House over the last five years or so I know Ann to be a hard worker who is always keen to become involved, and who is constantly looking to expand her knowledge. Ann is passionate about her local community and its residents, involving herself in a number of organisations in the district, including taking on official positions within many of those organisations. Ann also has a great interest in local heritage issues. I think that Ann would be an excellent Councillor and an asset to the Sunshine Coast Council, as well as a concerning and caring representative for all Division 1 residents.” Elaine Reeves-Glass House Mountains

Our Australia Olympic hopeful named Fisher Young Citizen of the Year

Fr Stuart Webb, Jessica Bayliss and Member for Fisher Peter Slipper A Beerwah High student, who holds a burning desire to be an Olympian swimmer, has been named ‘Fisher Young Citizen of the Year’ for her community work, by Member for Fisher Peter Slipper. Jessica Bayliss, 15, who has wanted to be an Olympic swimmer since the age of five, uses her sporting skills to raise money for charity. The Beerwah High School student also volunteers to help the homeless and needy in Caboolture. “I feel privileged to be nominated for an award for something that I enjoy doing,” said Jessica. Mr Slipper said Jessica was an inspiration to her community and deserved recognition and encouragement. “It is great to see young people like Jessica getting out and making a real difference to the community,” Mr Slipper said. “I congratulate her for receiving this accolade and I encourage her to keep serving the community.” Jessica was one of 42 voluntary community workers and groups who were recognised for their efforts by Mr Slipper and the Fisher Australia Day Committee at the 13th annual Fisher Community Australia Day Awards. Jessica uses her swimming talents to generate sponsorship and donations, having raised funds for various organisations, including the Cerebral Palsy League, Hannah's Foundation (which supports families who have lost loved ones through drowning) and the Mission Watoto charity, a nondenominational volunteer group that takes construction teams to help build villages in Africa. In addition, Jessica volunteers for the Caboolture Action Group, which goes into the streets to provide meals and clothing to the homeless and needy. “My ultimate goals for the future are to go overseas and help people less fortunate than me and to compete in the Olympics in open water swimming,” Jessica said. The annual Fisher Community Australia Day Awards were established by Mr Slipper in 2000, to recognise those who volunteer their own time to make their community a better place to live. “These dedicated and hard-working residents don’t seek recognition for what they do, but Australia Day gives us an opportunity to say thanks publicly and to let them know that we do recognise their contributions, which are very much appreciated,” Mr Slipper said. “Each year, the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards provide a great opportunity to give public recognition to these individuals and organisations that dedicate themselves to the community,” Mr Slipper said. Recipients are recognised for their contributions in the areas of community service, industry and commerce, the arts, sport and recreation, and for their work with seniors’ groups, sporting clubs, youth organisations and the like. Nomination forms for 2013 are available from Mr Slipper’s office. www.gcnews.com.au

Members of hinterland community recognised for their service Hard working community members and groups were among 42 recipients recognised for their community service, at the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards. The Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue, of Beerwah, were among 42 recipients recognised for their community service at the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards. Helen Powers, who helps manage the service with her daughters Bridget, Paula and Michelle, said the nomination was unexpected. “They say everything has a heartbeat, and if we could save every injured animal on the planet, we would. We’d bring them all home with us if we could,” Mrs Powers said.

“We’ve all done it out of the goodness of our hearts and, if we can make a difference, that’s great. It’s nice that people have noticed what we do.” Other locals recognised included Valerie Bradford, of Mooloolah, for services to the community, Jan Cheal, of Beerwah, for service to cancer research, Rita Cruikshank, of Glass House, for service to the Glasshouse RSL, Libby Dios-Brun, of Glass House, for service to the community through the Glasshouse RSL, Ken Hinds of Landsborough, for service to the arts, the late Robert Mayes of Beerwah, accepted on his behalf by his widow Kay, for service to the community through the Glasshouse RSL, Lorraine McNamara, of Glass House, for service to the Glasshouse RSL for many years, Helen Page, of Peachester, for service to various community groups, Lindsay Prentice, of Glass House, for service to the Glasshouse RSL for many years, John and Lynelle Schrader, of Glass House, for their service to the Glasshouse RSL, Ros Smerdon, of Glass House, for services to horticulture, and Cr Anna Grosskreutz, for service to the community in various organisations.

They say a week is a very long time in politics, and that certainly appears to be so. In last week’s edition of GCNews, we covered the announcement of the local government elections, which were to be held on March 31. Since then, the Premier, Anna Bligh, announced that the State election will be held on March 24, to allow for the extra hearings in the Flood Commission Inquiry, thus pushing out the date of the local government election until an undecided date in late April or early May. The Premier explained that it had been her intention to call the state election for a March 3 or 10 poll date, after the COI report had been due for release, giving the public the opportunity to consider the report and the responses of the major parties to the recommendations. Locally, at GCNews we will be covering the candidates across two electorates – Caloundra, currently held by sitting member Mark McArdle, and Glass House, held by Andrew Powell.

Other candidates that have raised their hand in the Glass House electorate include Queensland Greens candidate Stewart Luke, and ALP candidate Ryan Moore. In the Caloundra electorate, other candidates include Allan McKay, who is representing the Queensland Greens, and Christine Anthony, representing the ALP. In coming weeks, we will give all candidates in both divisions the opportunity to introduce themselves to our readers, and outline their policies in relation to major issues of concern in our local areas. We encourage readers to contribute, by sending in any specific questions you would like to ask our candidates. If you would like to get involved, please send in your questions no later than 4.00pm, Wednesday, February 8, by email to editorial@gcnews.com.au or by post, to PO Box 99, Beerwah, 4519. Please ensure you include your name and a contact phone number.

cont. from page 3 He said Beerwah police were not made aware of the event until they responded to a noise complaint at the hall around 10.00pm on the night. “Officers shut down the party just after 10.00pm due to a lack of adult supervision, and remained in the area until after 12.00am, moving people along,” Senior Sergeant Duck said. He said there were between 100 and 150 youth in the vicinity of the hall when the party was shut down, however officers weren’t aware of any damage to the hall at that time. People should always complete a party registration form, available on the QPS website, when planning a large function, he said, to help avoid this type of situation from occurring.

Dental Excel is proud to be a part of the MARLEY DENTAL GROUP

He said the forms should always be done at least 14 days in advance of an event, so police are aware and can if necessary assist organisers to make their event safe, in terms of ensuring there is appropriate supervision and, if necessary, security guards.

Beerburrum plantation forests closed Forest plantations in Beerburrum will be closed until the end of this weekend following the recent deluge in South East Queensland. Forestry Plantations Queensland Pty Ltd would like to advise the closure of its forest plantations due to extreme heavy rainfall events being experienced in south east and central Queensland over the last several days. The affected plantation areas include the Fraser Coast, Elliott River, Wongi, Beerburrum, Mary Valley, Jimna and Byfield areas. The affected plantation areas, have been closed to all unauthorised access since Australia Day. Due to the localised and heavy nature of rainfall

events, many of the plantation roads and tracks have been subject to flooding and may have been damaged, creating a serious risk to people attempting to use them. The potential for rapid rises of streams and waterways from further heavy rainfall in the plantation areas is high, further increasing the risk to life and property. Forestry Plantations Queensland is asking the public to respect the closure so that safe and responsible access to the plantations can be restored to the public as soon as possible. She’s been off the road for over a year, but serious injury isn’t enough to hold this pocket rocket down. Peachester’s Cheryl Newman, who is about to celebrate her 58th birthday, suffered a serious injury after falling off her bike last year, but is now ready and raring to pedal again, as she prepares for her next big challenge, the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer. Readers may recall we first met Cheryl, back in 2010, who was preparing for the 80 kilometre BDO Brisbane Cootha Challenge. Sadly, Cheryl lost her brother Ron to cancer just two days prior to this event, hence her willingness to get involved in this year’s event, which benefits the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. This year, after a long recuperation, Cheryl will join thousands of other men and women in a history making ride from August 18 - 19 through the state’s scenic countryside with a night of camping. Riders will support breakthrough research and the discovery of new cancer therapies at QIMR. Cheryl will be joined on her challenging journey by husband Rob, who will be her support team; however the pair must first raise their $5,000 entry fee. As well as checking out their personal page at the Ride to Conquer Cancer website (www.conquercancer.org.au), you can also support them at donation tins located at a number of local outlets, including the Fruit Shed and the Peachester General Store, Smiley’s Jewellers and Westpac. Another local participating in this year’s event is Landsborough resident Owen Johnson. “When I heard about this ride I just knew I had to participate,” Owen said. “I just felt I had to drag my bike out of the shed and blow the dust off it and do this ride. “I personally know at least five people all going through different battles with cancer at the

moment, including my own family, friends and work colleagues. I know I can’t personally help them physically, but I can raise money to help find answers for them,” Owen said. To help Owen raise his goal amount of $3,000, visit his personal page on the Ride to Conquer Cancer website, or check out his facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/Owen-JohnsonsRide-to-Conquer-Cancer. This is the second annual Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer event in Queensland. Riders will be supported by hundreds of volunteers and crew members who will provide meals, water and snack stops, gear transport, portable restrooms, safety on the streets, comprehensive medical services and an overnight campsite complete with tents, massages, and hot showers. For more information on the event visit www.conquercancer.org.au or call 1- 300-11-RIDE. All you need is a bike, a helmet and a little motivation!

Magic fingers Jack

ADVERTISMENT

He’s played the piano for less than half of his young life, but Glass House’s Jack Bochow’s incredible talent has proven enough to secure him a firm foothold for future success. Jack, who graduated from Beerwah State High last year, has been accepted into the highly coveted Bachelor of Music degree at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Jack, who began playing the piano at the age of 10, was successful to gain one of only 25 places in the classical piano program at the conservatorium, following a gruelling process which involved both an audition and theory exams. Jack, who went through the audition process last year, held little hope of being successful, and is still digesting the thought of where this once in a lifetime opportunity may take him. “I am extremely excited, entirely nervous and optimistic and hopeful, all at the same time,” Jack said of the news of his acceptance. Later this month, he’ll make the journey from his Glass House family home and take up residence near the Conservatorium’s Griffith University campus, in Brisbane.

And with the campus now boasting two new heads of piano who are world renowned musicians, this young man is certainly going places. Jack, whose genre is classical music, and who is inspired by musicians such as Franz Liszt, says his goal is to one day become a performer on stage. And with music in his blood – Dad plays a guitar and mum is a singer, there’s every chance this bright, young and talented pianist will no doubt be wowing audiences across the world.

Sharlene notches up another award Our very own international swimming sensation Sharlene Gardner has notched up yet another achievement in what is now a long list of accolades. On Friday night, Sharlene, who hails from Landsborough, was recognised at the annual Sunshine Coast Sports Star of the Year Awards at the Hyatt Regency at Coolum, taking home the Sportswoman of the Year award for the Special Olympics. This is the third time Sharlene has won the prestigious award.

Sharlene Gardner

Flying the flag There were plenty of smiles all round when special guest, member for Glass House Andrew Powell presented members of the Glass House Legacy Laurel Club with a new Queensland flag at their monthly meeting last week.

Sharlene retired from competitive swimming last year, following 14 years of swimming which has seen her achieve numerous gold medals, which culminated in one gold, a silver and two bronze medals from the Special Olympics in Greece. Even though she’s no longer competing, Sharlene is still very much focused on swimming, but now prefers the view from the sidelines. With her sights set on coaching, and under her father Ray’s expert guidance, Sharlene is now making a name for herself as a coach, and hopes one day to become part of the national coaching team. Does this young lady ever take a break? “I’d like to be able to share my knowledge and experience with others,” Sharlene said. No doubt with her proven determination and passion, we’ve not heard the last from our Sharlene, who’s certainly going to continue to make a splash in the world of swimming.

Golden anniversary an opportunity to celebrate

BEERWAH SURGERY 6/72 Simpson St, Beerwah

For an appointment

For some people, Friday the 13th is far from Black Friday. In fact, for one local Beerwah couple, it was a day of romance, love and celebration as they renewed their wedding vows, 50 years to the day that they first exchanged them. It was Friday, January 13, 1962 when John and Lottie Nisbett exchanged wedding vows at St Pauls Presbyterian Church on Wickham Terrace, Brisbane. To mark the occasion of their 50th anniversary last month, the couple renewed their vows in front of the same priest, at the same church and at the same time. Making the event even more special was an anniversary dinner at the Beerwah RSL later that evening, attended by members of their wedding party, followed by a surprise party at their daughter’s home the following night. Fifty years of marriage is no longer a common milestone, but for John and Lottie, their family say WELL DONE!

Two Sunshine Coast mums who sadly lost their sons in separate motorbike accidents have recently launched a petition asking the State Government to overhaul the current system. Maroochydore’s Donna Ferguson, whose son Angus died when he was just 18, and Caloundra’s Lorraine Conolly, whose son Jason died when he was 26, want the Mark McArdle discusses the petition with Donna State Government to and Lorraine overhaul Queensland's current motorbike licensing laws and implement tougher regulations to obtain a motorbike licence through QRIDE in relation to age, driver experience and on-road motorbike training hours to prevent unskilled and inexperienced motorbike fatalities on our roads. “A lot of people are quite shocked when they find out how easy it is to get a motorbike license,” Ms Ferguson said. “I just thought that it was illogical and there was a huge loophole in relation to the licensing, that my son, who had only one point left on his Ps was able to go and get a motorbike license, and that it only took a day, five hours, for him to actually do that through QRIDE (the State’s training and assessment program).” Ms Conolly said words can’t describe the pain their families have had to go through. “If we can stop another family from going through what we’re going through, the heartache and the void in our lives, that we face every day, then our job is done.” The pair hopes to attract thousands of signatures on their hard copy and e-petition, which has been backed by Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle. “These ladies have lost their sons in the most tragic of circumstances. They have launched this petition to ensure no mother has to endure the same, and another motorbike fatality does not happen on our roads due to inexperience,” Mr McArdle said. “Without community support, their quest to change motorbike licensing laws and implement tougher regulations will be lost, and I would encourage as many people possible to get behind this petition and worthy campaign." The e-pettion can be viewed at http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-ofassembly/petitions/e-petitions A hard copy is also available at Mr McArdle’s electorate office.

Local heroes supporting students

Have you time on your hands? If you have, why not help Beerwah school students with reading? Glenda and Robyn, two of our local heroes attend Beerwah State School each week, supporting the development of reading. We are looking for people from the local Beerwah area who would like to join our valuable team of Support-A-Reader tutors. The tutors volunteer time each week to read with students. Tutor training will be held on Friday, February 3, 1.15pm - 2.55pm at the school. The training session is not difficult and helps you understand how children learn to read. We will help with Blue Card applications, if necessary. Come along and make a difference. Please register by contacting Beerwah State Primary School 5436 5555 before February 2.

Annual Ebenezer Art Show A photographic exhibition will be held featuring both budding artists along with experienced noted artists to raise money for the Ebenezer orphans and abused children in Livingstone Zambia. Some works have been donated for a silent auction, whilst others will be for sale. To encourage budding artists there will be a $200.00 art voucher for the best art and there is still plenty of time for ALL artists to contact us to submit their art for both the competition, auction and for sale. This wonderful family friendly event is being organised by two young Uni students, Emma-Louise and Hayley who wish to make a difference to the devastatingly disadvantaged children of Ebenezer. Emma-Louise, a very enterprising young woman visited and worked in Ebenezer in 2009 having paid her own fare through part time work whilst a school student. She saw the desperate need and put up her hand to do something about it. This fun family event will have live music, sausage sizzle, tasty finger food, tea, ‘Coffee Bella Coffee’ and soft drinks available for sale. The exhibition will be held at the City Life Baptist Church, 7 Gregson Place, Caloundra, from 4.00pm – 7.00pm on Saturday, February 11. Entry is by a gold or fold donation. For anyone who is interested in either donating or showcasing their works, please contact Lenore Burton 5429 6194 or email ric1945len@yahoo.com.au or go to Art for Ebenezer on Facebook.

News in Brief

Australia Day shines at Aussie World

Grants help find alternatives to driving a car

Despite the wet forecast, Australia Day festivities at Aussie World and the Ettamogah Pub were an outstanding success on Thursday, January 26. Aussie World general manager David Thompson said thousands of people joined in the patriotic fun of the Dunny Races, Tug of War and Ute Show. “This year is the 20th year the Dunny Races have been held,” he said. “The rainy weather seen across the coast didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm for either watching or actually running in the races to gain the toilet seat trophy. “Despite it being a wet track, the Dunny Races were hotly contested with the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles coming in first place and Maroochy North Shore Roos in a close second.” The Tug of War was won by The Australian Party who showed their strength against second place getters the Ute Show Chicks. The Ute Show attracted participants from all over Queensland. Ute Show organiser Melinda Ruhle said it was a success right from the start. “This is the third year the Ettamogah Pub has held the Ute Show on Australia Day,” Melinda said. “It’s the perfect place, is easy to get to and is only going to get bigger and better every year.” The overall winner of the Ute Show was Judy Sanders from Elimbah with her restored 1971 Ford XY ute.

If you’ve got an idea to help reduce reliance on cars for transport, then a TravelSmart Sunshine Coast grant may help get the wheels turning. Sunshine Coast Council welcomes submissions from community groups, workplaces and schools for grants of up to $2,000 to support sustainable transport initiatives. Submissions can be made online until March 1. Car-free days, social media campaigns that help change travel behaviours and cycle skills training at schools or workplaces are just some of the activities that may be eligible for a TravelSmart Sunshine Coast Grant. Integrated Transport Systems portfolio holder and Division 9 Councillor Vivien Griffin said transport accounts for 27 per cent of the region’s greenhouse gas emissions and, if left unchecked, will dramatically affect our Sunshine Coast lifestyle. Guidelines and online application forms can be found on council’s website at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/grants. Applicants are encouraged to contact a TravelSmart Sunshine Coast Grants Officer on 5475 7272 to help develop their application.

Rec fishers reminded about crab rules

Did you know that lifting another person's crab pot can attract a $1,000 on-the-spot fine? Do you know the correct way to label your crab pots? Fishers are reminded that the legal limit is four crab pots per person, with a bag limit of 10 mud crabs per person. There are fines between $1,000 and $50,000 if people are found checking or removing other people’s pots. Female mud crabs are a protected species and must not be taken from Queensland waters, which also extends to commercial fishers. A male mud crab has a V-shaped flap on the bottom of its shell, while a female mud crab has a more rounded flap on the bottom of its shell. The size of a mud crab must be decided by measuring the widest part of its carapace, irrespective of damage to the carapace. To learn how to correctly identify and measure mud crabs, view the YouTube video on crab rules in Queensland at www.youtube.com/fisheriesqld Catch the latest fishing rules at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23 or via Twitter, www.twitter.com/fisheriesQLD or find us on Facebook under Fisheries Queensland.

Attention all parents / guardians

My 11-year-old son's dark green / almost black ABD, BMX bike was stolen from Beerwah library on Saturday, January 21, between 10.00am and 11.00am. I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. We have lived in Beerwah for 12 years, and have never had anything stolen. We have always felt safe and happy here. Someone must know who has this bike. Adults, have your kids got a new bike you didn’t buy for them? Where did they get it from? The police are involved, so if you find it on your property, please just drop it off at Beerwah Police Station. Imagine if it was your bike that was stolen! Please help. Karyn Mcdougall Beerwah

Council mudding the waters

I agree that the aerodrome should stay where it is. For years the council have had their eye on it for development, hence their procrastination. They are still trying to muddy the waters by delaying long term leases for the businesses involved there. I think they should just accept the State Governments decision and get over it. I am however a bit concerned with the response from some locals about flights overhead. I have been a passenger in a flight around the area and thoroughly recommend it. Why should we deny visitors and locals such an awe inspiring experience? As long as minimum height restrictions are in place I do not see a problem. The noise level from a fixed wing plane or helicopter is far less and lasts for a shorter time than the average neighbourhood lawn mower. Derek Browning Glass House Mountains

No no no to airport

Responding in relation to the article 'airport back on radar' I live in Landsborough and my back fence backs on to Steve Irwin Way (also train line). We already stress out about the increasing noise of the traffic / trains, so I say a most definite 'No No No' to any kind of airport coming into our neighbourhood. Homes for extended families

Too many people are being forced to surrender their beloved companion animals to shelters simply because of the difficulty of finding rental accommodation that welcomes animals. We agree that landlords should be more welcoming towards prospective tenants' four20

legged family members. Animal-friendly housing options do exist though, and I urge people who are facing relocation to begin looking as soon as possible for properties (especially houses) that allow animals. Local animal shelters may be able to provide information and resources. For people who truly have no choice but to part with their animals, taking them to a well-run open-admission animal shelter is the best option. There, animals will be safe, fed, cared for and loved and will have a chance at finding new homes. There is never an excuse for abandoning or neglecting animals. The real issue is responsibility. Adding an animal to the family means making a 10 to 20 year commitment. Animals should never be bought or given as ‘presents.’ Like us, animals require love and companionship, good food, exercise, health care and living space in order to flourish. If there is any doubt that you will be able to provide an animal with a lifetime of loving care, please don't acquire an animal in the first place. And please – if you are certain that you can provide a loving, lifelong home to an animal, save a life by adopting a grateful cat or dog from an animal shelter rather than supporting a breeder. No to aircraft over Glass House

In response to Gwen Malcolm from Glass House Mountains (GCNews January 24), as a candidate for Division One I do not support the proposal of Debbie Blumel, to move the Caloundra Aerodrome. This is an ill-conceived proposal from a candidate that just can’t leave the relocation debate alone. I will never vote for this plan to move the Caloundra Aerodrome, if I am elected and I hope that since I am the only other candidate with a stated position on this, the other candidates for Division One will finally declare their positions. Steve Attrill Candidate Div 1

In response to Mr Weeks…

Mr JT Weeks is obviously a thoughtful, compassionate man. While many of us applaud the actions of the Sea Shepherd and love to see the whalers actions not succeed, responsible governments usually like to consider the bigger picture and need to look at minor matters like trade and tourism and the safety of the three individuals (heroes / idiots). Many of us consider that the final outcome of this strange event created by the three to be the best possible not only for the three activists but also for relations with Japan. Mr Weeks does not suggest what alternative to the illegal immigrant problem should be adopted. I for one liked the idea of telling prospective boat people that risking their lives was futile because they were going to end up back in Malaysia anyway. That seemed to me to carry the force of logic if not compassion but not to the opposition of course. Mr Weeks also thinks our Prime Minister should have seriously considered conveying the offer of the Sea Shepherd to the Japanese. Perhaps he thinks the Japanese would have acknowledged the Sea Shepherd as someone they would deal with. Come on! One wonders if Mr Weeks raised the cost of pollies using ‘ghost flights’ before - before 2007. The issue worries me firstly because the figures apparently come from Murdoch's Courier Mail (not the most reliable source) and secondly I do

not think many readers would feel comfortable flying to some of the areas on the same plane used by the Defence Minister or other high profile pollies. I would much rather fly in a plane not likely to be a target of attack. R Retsel, Post Office, Landsborough

Wrong way

Whilst in total agreement with Mr Stallworthy`s assessment of road conditions along Steve Irwin Way I fear it will be a long wait for an upgrade. Four years on the Range Road. In the interim may I point out the 80 km/h sign is only advising of maximum speed in ideal conditions it is not compulsory. If the spray from a lead vehicle is vision impairing, drop back, and please drive to the conditions and your capability. It is better to arrive a little late than to arrive Dead on Time. Where were the parents?

On January 23, the first day of school for my granddaughter, my hubby and I were very proud to see her off to the Peachester Primary School. We parked the car and walked past the Peachester Community Hall. One of the hall committee fellows was there, and we called out ‘How ya going!’ The reply was a very sharp “not a good day for me! Come and take a look at this,” he beckoned. A party for around 60 kids was held at the hall on Saturday night (January 21) – the party goers absolutely trashed the hall – broken glass covered all the floors and the car park, locked kitchen cupboards were ripped open and torn off their hinges. Cupboard contents tea, coffee, sugar, sauce thrown everywhere. Furniture thrown, walls smashed in, toilets vandalised, the entire dance floor wet with alcohol and the contents of hall fire extinguishers and so much more. The hall committee has been running this community hall for two (moving into three) generations of locals, and the Peachester Hall, I am told, is one of only two community halls in Queensland still run by its own community. My husband and I had our wedding reception at this hall and have attended many functions there. In our small way we have contributed to events and clean ups over the years. We are proud to be part of this community and have been made welcome by Peachesterites. We have a great community and love to share our beautiful surroundings. Saturday night a group of uncaring, and inconsiderate mongrels aged 17 years and under, destroyed our sense of communal sharing. Men and women who have given of their own time, effort and expertise for more than 20 years have been devastated by this event. The actions of these children have been a personal attack on our community, especially the custodians of the hall. These children have no idea what they have done and at a guess I don’t think they really care… The damage done can be repaired but the trust and sense of community violated by these people will last a life time. Health Check

Are you hurting from sitting?

It is a well known fact, sitting puts more stress on your

back than standing or lying down! Sitting poorly can have a devastating effect on your health and quality of life, so why not do it correctly? By remember to perform the ManubriumLift® (see 3D animation at www.drposture.com.au). Make sure your buttocks touch the back of your chair, as that will help to shift your head back over your shoulders. A lumbar roll can be used to help you maintain the normal curves in your back. Bend your knees at a right angle (use a foot rest or stool if necessary). Keep your feet flat on the floor and try not to cross your legs. When sitting forward while eating, at your computer or when writing, it is good to tip your seat down slightly at the front if possible, or use a sacral block (chair wedge) to prevent your pelvis from tipping back, which causes slouching. “Blocking” your pelvis will make it easier and more comfortable to maintain an upright position. I often see people who don’t know how to perform proper standing, sitting or sleeping positions. When I position a patient in a proper standing or sitting position, the most common reaction I get is, ‘that it is easy to do, feels good and is almost effortless’. Community Group Updates Glasshouse Country SES Activities

Contributed by Dave Erbacher

It was a very unusually quiet Christmas / New Year period for the SES Group and it was appreciated by all members. There have been no mountain rescues and very few activations until the past week. On Christmas Eve, members responded to a major traffic accident at Beerburrum and assisted Police with traffic control in wet conditions. Again on Christmas Eve a house down towards Roys Road was tarped. In the last week, the group has responded to various requests due to the very heavy and

60s and better

constant rain. Tasks tackled were roof taping, sand bagging and attending to storm water running through properties and now the coming weekend could be more of the same. Group Leader, Robert Barry stated that some of the call outs could have been avoided if owners and landlords spent a little time attending to blocked gutters and cleaning out drains etc, but the recent rains were the heaviest to fall for some time. He specially thanked all the members who were able to respond to the communities needs in the past few months.

Peachester History Committee

A Mystery Burial Peachester Cemetery is the focus for a major project in 2012 as the Peachester History Committee, with funding help from the Sunshine Coast Council, plans to mark all the unmarked graves in the cemetery. Checking our records in preparation for the many new plaques to be installed, we encountered a problem – a mystery burial. Since the online resource now known as ‘Trove’ gave historians the opportunity to consult the National Library’s old newspaper collection, we frequently find local history treasures. And so it happened that we found this item from ‘The Brisbane Courier’, 28 May 1930:

Mr William Blake ‘The death occurred recently, at Peachester, of Mr William Blake, a popular resident of that town. The funeral, which took place to the Peachester Cemetery, was largely attended. A touching tribute was paid by the school children of Peachester, whose friend the deceased was, when, as the cortege passed the school, the scholars stood in silent salute.’ Mr Blake sounds like a valued member of the community ... BUT he is not on our cemetery register, and we have found no record of him in all our previous local research, or in official sources such as electoral rolls from the period. In the interests of accuracy we sent for a death certificate, but the mystery deepened. The certificate states that William Blake lived and died at Peachester, but is buried in the Beerwah Cemetery. So what do we make of this? A reminder that what we read in the newspaper is not necessarily true? And the ‘touching tribute’ in the ‘Brisbane Courier’ report is even more intriguing. Was it the children of Peachester School or Beerwah School who stood in ‘silent salute’ as the cortege passed? Can any Glasshouse Country News readers help us solve this puzzle? Is there anyone out there who remembers William Blake or anything about his funeral? Peachester History Committee meets on the first Sunday of each month at the Peachester Hall, 11.00am start, and we bring lunch to share. The first meeting for the year is Sunday, February 5. For more information please contact Helen Page 5494 9557, or Jan Gresham 5494 2301.

Living Well Music Today With our regular columnist, local musician Dr Michael Whiticker

What's in the Spotlight

What is a musician’s club? A musician’s club generally begins as an informal opportunity for musicians to get together and make music. It might develop into a formal notfor-profit organisation and might eventually have its own venue and present top quality shows, but its humble beginnings are usually with a group of people wanting to provide opportunity for themselves and others to get together and make music in a non competitive environment. You come across musician’s clubs or musician’s sessions under a range of names - Musos Jam, Acoustic Session, Open Mic night and Folk Music Club are typical. There are also Jazz Clubs and a range of others specific to genre or style, such as Brass Band, Bluegrass or Country Music Club. What distinguishes a musician’s club more than anything is that it is not limited by style, although it usually ends up being led by folk, blues and popular music. And, although dominated by musicians with intermediate skills, they encourage all ages and skill levels. Beginners of course are fostered and it is just a matter of them being brave enough to get up. If they bring some chord charts along to a session there will always be someone prepared to get up and back them! And sessions are

wonderful for singers who are looking for the opportunity to perform with live musicians, although some bring their own backing tracks. The appeal of such clubs is not just to musicians, as many people enjoy the atmosphere that surrounds new comers getting up on stage followed by old timers ‘strutting their stuff’, or a beginner sharing the stage with a more experienced performer. The fact that a musician’s night will often see half a dozen or more acts on stage all providing short sets, or jamming together makes the evening even more successful for a general audience. One of the biggest attractions to musicians of such a club is the opportunity to see who is around in your field, and to network – there is nothing guitarists love more than talking about their equipment! Often they will form groups with other like-minded players and rehearse independently of the club. Certainly they will come together for the jam at the club. The Glasshouse Mountains has its own musicians club, but more about that in my column next month. Have a creative musical month! Michael

Learn to Sing! It’s now time that interested men can learn to sing in harmony, as the Sunshine Statesmen prepare to launch their popular, free, voicecoaching program again this year. It’s a rare opportunity that has proven a winner for potential harmony singers over the past three years. All barbershop music is sung ‘a capella’ style, which is without accompaniment. Ability to read music is helpful but certainly not essential, as the music for each part is provided on training CDs. Sheet music is distributed, but mainly to assist in learning the words. On the first night, each participant will be allocated to a voice part, be it tenor, lead, baritone or bass, according to their natural range, and provided with an information kit, CDs and music. The more experienced members of the chorus will act as mentors for the visitors. The three songs that will be learned by the participants are two old favourites ‘My Wild Irish Rose’ and ‘Sweet and Lovely’ plus our most popular up-beat number, ‘Mary Lou’. The only cost is a one-off $10.00 to cover the cost of the CD and sheet music. The obligation-free program will run for six consecutive Wednesday nights, commencing

Participants are welcome to stay on for another hour as the chorus goes through its other repertoire numbers. The final night, March 21, will take the form of a free President’s Concert where families can come along and listen to all of us (members and participants) present some real harmony. Out and About Preps well prepared, not so sure about the parents!

Last week’s wet weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the group of preps who attended their first day at school at Glasshouse Country Christian College on Wednesday. With parents long gone, there wasn’t a tear or tissue in sight as the students explored their bright new surroundings. It appears the parents were well catered for too, with the school hosting a ‘Tim Tams and Tissues’ event for them after they braved the morning’s farewells and good wishes for their children.

From Peter Slipper Federal member for Fisher. Ph: 1300 301 981 or 5444 4888 I hope this finds everyone safe and dry after our recent flooding rain. The recent flooding and traffic chaos it contributed to once again illustrates the need for attention to our streets and highways. Which brings me to the current state of the Bruce Highway upgrade: As many of you would know, I have been working with the Federal Government for years to increase the Bruce Highway from four to six lanes, and was successful in the first phase from north Brisbane to Caboolture where the greatest bottleneck occurred. My focus now is to continue the conversations with the government to extend the upgrade from Caboolture to the Sunshine Coast. The most immediate need for action is with regards to the draft plan put forward by the Transport and Main Roads (TMR). In summary, they are proposing to close six on/off ramps along a seven km stretch from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Coast Motorway (to see the draft plan, go to www.tmr.qld.gov.au). If this plan were to go ahead as proposed, it would significantly impact on thousands of Sunshine Coast residents and businesses. Several community forums have been organised to garner input from the community to address the concerns and also offer alternatives. I encourage you to attend these forums and also make your voice be heard by sending in your thoughts to the TMR. All the details are available on my website: www.peterslippermp.com.au and updates are also being made on my Facebook page: PeterSlipperMP. I look forward to hearing your comments and bringing these to the attention of the Federal government and those agencies who will be progressing this work. As always, you can also contact my office on 5444 4888 or email me: peter.slipper.mp@aph.gov.au

From Mark McArdle State member for Caloundra. Phone: 5491 2780 The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia and there is no doubt that a lot of government agencies have Beerwah earmarked for future projects and development. Its proximity to public transport and major retailers planning to move into the area has locals predicting Beerwah will become a key business district of the hinterland in the future. But how can we help small businesses tap into that potential now? There has been quite a lot of talk about signage, or a lack of, around the Beerwah CBD. I’d like to know your thoughts. Is the signage adequate enough around town? Can you list 10 businesses in the area? When was the last time you visited your local store? Last year Sunshine Coast Council announced a $3.5 million masterplan for the town and recently undertook a survey of local residents to hear their thoughts about Beerwah. It’s vital that we give feedback to all levels of government about how we can make our towns the best possible place to live, work and socialise. Earlier this month I spoke to businesses out at Aussie World regarding their concerns over the draft plan for the Bruce Highway Upgrade Planning Study, Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway, as detailed in Glasshouse Country News. This draft plan impacts a lot of people, and you can have your say until mid February. Copies of the map and feedback form is available from my electorate office in Bulcock Street, Caloundra. You can also contact 1800 706 917, or visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au It’s back-to-school time for a lot of households in the area, which is quite exciting for many first-time and returning students. Particularly for those entering Year 12 this year, best of luck in your studies. I feel privileged to visit your graduation ceremonies at the end of the year to see how well you have all done. Good luck to all.

Thelie Hobbs PraiseHouse Church I have been following the tragic events of the shipwreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship the past few weeks. It’s so sad that people who set off for the holiday of a lifetime have lost their lives and other passengers are totally traumatised by their experience. Sometimes tragedies remind us how fragile life is. It is just as perplexing how one event can change our lives forever. When we wake up in the morning, I wonder do we even give it a thought as to what events might happen that day that will change the course of our lives forever? For example, making a split-second decision that we can’t ever take back, or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you take God out of that equation, what a depressing event life might be! But life is so different with God in the centre of our lives! Sure, we can still make that split-second decision that can change life as we know it, but

LUTHERAN CHURCH

God has given us promises in the Bible to make it much more peaceful. One of those promises is that we can know that we have eternal life (Romans 10:9) – this life isn’t all there is – and that splitsecond decision can’t and won’t change that truth. Another comforting promise is knowing that God is sovereign and that He will do two things – either protect us (Psalm 91), or turn our bad decision into a good outcome according to His definition of good (Romans 8:28). A third promise is that God can still use us in spite of silly mistakes! (Psalm 103:12) (Thank goodness for that!) God has a purpose and a plan for every life (Jeremiah 29:11); if we are feeling lost, we only need to trust in God and ask Him to show us which path to take and He will show us (Proverbs 3:6). Life is a fragile, beautiful gift from God; so live your life to the full...have faith and don't be afraid to dream big!

Be prepared this wet season It’s that time of the year again when becoming waterlogged is a familiar

state of affairs for anyone living along the eastern coast of the tropics. And we are certainly not spared here in Glasshouse. Not only can we look forward to the drenching rain, there is also the threat of seasonal cyclones and severe thunderstorms, and everyone, whether you are a property owner or rent, should be aware of the basic safety precautions to take, to be prepared in the event of a natural disaster. According to the Queensland department of Emergency Services, the key to minimising the impact of natural disasters on yourself, your family and your community is being well prepared. You should know where to get information and what to do before a disaster strikes. Once the disaster is happening, it may be too late. Plan ahead and be prepared so that during an emergency you know: • how to get accurate information quickly • what to do before and during the disaster • where to go if you need to evacuate • how to keep in touch with family members • how to contact emergency services. Your emergency plan Every household, business and workplace should have a plan for dealing with emergencies and disasters. To find out how to prepare your emergency plan, visit www.emergency.qld. gov.au/emq/css.emergencyplanchecklist.asp. Your emergency kit Could you and your family survive for up to three days if you have no access to power, water, communications and outside help? Do you know what you need to keep in your kit? What to keep in your emergency kit Food and water • a three day supply of non-perishable food, plus a can opener, cooking gear (barbeque or portable stove, etc.), plates and utensils • Clean water in sealed containers (10 litres per person is recommended for three day's supply) • Water purification tablets • Esky or gas/battery-powered refrigerator Medical and sanitation supplies • First-aid kit and manual • Medications, prescriptions and dosage information • Toiletry and personal hygiene supplies (toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo, hand sanitiser, sunscreen and insect repellent, etc.) • Spare spectacles Lighting • Torch with extra batteries (or wind-up torch) • Battery-powered lantern Communications • Mobile phone, spare charged batteries and charger (or wind-up charger) • Battery-powered radio with extra batteries (or wind-up radio) • Traditional wired telephone (for land line) • Pre-paid phone cards and coins for pay-phone calls Clothing, footwear and bedding • Warm jumpers, waterproof jackets, hats and gloves for everyone • Closed-toe shoes or boots for everyone • Spare clothing and bedding, stored in plastic bags • Woollen and thermal blankets

Tools and supplies • Plastic sheeting and duct tape (or masking tape) to tape windows • Whistle • Utility knife • Plastic garbage bags and ties • Safety glasses and sun glasses • Wide masking tape (or duct tape) for windows • Wrench or pliers to turn off all utilities • Tent and tarpaulin Miscellaneous items • Supplies for infants, the elderly and people with special needs • Spare house and car keys • Cash (you may not be able to access ATMs due to power failures) Important documents Keep original or certified copies of the following documents in your emergency kit. Scan the documents and save copies on a USB memory stick or CD to include in your kit. Keep everything in sealed plastic bags. • Insurance documents for your house, contents, cars and valuable items • An inventory of valuable household goods • Wills and life insurance documents • House deeds / mortgage documents • Birth and marriage certificates • Passports / visa details • Stocks and bonds • Medicare and pension card details, and immunisation records • Bank account and credit card details • Back-up copies of important computer files • A copy of your household emergency plan (available from http:// www.emergency.qld.gov.au/emq/css/emergencyplanchecklist.asp ) with emergency contact phone numbers If you have pets • Ensure you have enough pet food and enough water for three days • Pet supplies and information (e.g. vet papers, leash, collar with identification tag, bed, litter pan and scooper, carrier, and medication) • Grab a copy of ‘Preparing your pets for a disaster ‘from the government’s emergency website, http://www.qld.gov.au/emergency/dealing-disasters/ prepare-pets.html Preparing your home You can minimise the effect of a disaster on your home by taking some simple steps to reduce the likelihood of damage( http://www.qld.gov.au/ emergency/dealing-disasters/prepare-home.html ). Tune in to warnings Make sure you know how to get the right information at the right time so you know what is happening before and during a disaster. You can receive up-to-date warnings and alerts at http://www.qld.gov.au/emergency/dealingdisasters/warnings-alerts.html Your evacuation plan and kit Do you have a plan in case you need to evacuate from your home or workplace? Where will you go, how will you get there? You may need several evacuation options, depending on the type of emergency. If you need to evacuate in a hurry, you won't have much time to decide what to take with you. Make sure you have essential items packed and ready to go. Find out how to prepare an evacuation plan at http://www.qld.gov.au/ emergency/dealing-disasters/evacuation-plan.html ) and what to include in your evacuation kit.

CONSTRUCTION LOAN FAQ’S What is a construction loan? It’s a loan that allows a residence to be built on a vacant block. The block may have been purchased previously or at the same time as doing the building contract. Is the application process the same as a regular home loan? The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) welcomes the State Government’s proposal to simplify the paperwork associated with residential real estate transactions. The elimination of excessive paperwork associated with residential real estate transactions is an issue that the REIQ has been actively seeking to be addressed for a number of years. Currently sellers must comply with various information and disclosure requirements when selling residential property including issuing a warning statement, an information statement and community management statement for lots in a community titles scheme, sustainability declarations, and pool safety certificates. “These forms and documents are required to be given under different pieces of legislation which are in turn administered by different government departments, so it makes sense to introduce a single regime which incorporates the existing requirements into one document,” REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said. The REIQ would like to see a range of other statutory disclosures introduced into the proposed regime and looks forward to working with the state government to streamline the contractual process to make it easier for both buyers and sellers. The REIQ is also pleased to note that the government is considering phasing out sustainability declarations. “Sustainability declarations have been in effect for two years in Queensland and have had minimal impact on buyers’ decision-making processes,” Mr Kardash said. “Indeed, anecdotal evidence from the industry overwhelmingly indicates that the sustainability features of a property are not considered to be important factors in the view of the majority of buyers. “Research undertaken by the Queensland University of Technology also found the introduction of sustainability declarations had little impact on property purchases.”

A productive new year! Welcome back to another year in productive gardening! I hope everyone had a chance to feast on their bountiful harvest and enjoy some industrious gardening time. We were fortunate enough to be able to go on vacation knowing that we had great neighbours willing to take care of our pets and the precious patch. Whilst on holiday, I learnt some invaluable lessons…the hard way of course! I’ll pass them on, in the hope that others avoid having to learn the same way. Firstly I learnt that I must teach my children that whilst they know that it is okay to eat anything directly from our garden, they must always check it is okay when visiting other people’s places. I neglected to do this, and when visiting family my youngest two children ended up in hospital after eating nectarines that had been sprayed that morning with an insecticide used to kill adult fruit flies and fruit fly maggots within the fruit. In my own backyard organic fantasy world, I have been proud to tell my children to eat whatever they like fresh straight from the source, believing that it is the epitome of healthy eating. I will continue to tell my children to eat as they please in our yard, but as for other peoples, it will be a definite NO! Please ensure you do the same and save your family from this turmoil. The second message I’d like to pass on is that if you do use any chemical, and I’m even talking about the organically certified products and homemade concoctions, adhere to the correct dosage and withholding times.

Furthermore, if you have children visiting, let them know that their always ravenous little mouths should stay away from your produce. A big juicy nectarine is very hard to pass by! Back on the home garden front, I am beginning 2012 with a bumper gardening plan. January saw me revamping the garden beds in lasagne fashion with mushroom compost, chook manure and lucerne layers. Whilst for the month of February, I’m hedging my bets and planting both early and late crops as indicated in the table, and you never know, they could both come through if I’m really lucky. Finally, I have a whole new appreciation and respect for home organic gardening because of my family’s latest experience. Previously, I just figured Vegetable Beans Cauliflower, Cabbage and Broccoli Carrot Cucumber Lettuce Silverbeet Sweet Corn Tomatoes

Zucchini and Squash

I was supplying a simple healthy food source for my family, but in actuality, I believe it is a healthy lifetime I’m nurturing. Everyone should have a go, so what are you waiting for, get up and grow today! Please note: I would like to say I support and respect Australian farmers 100 per cent and I understand on a commercial front that the use of chemicals is often the only viable way to harvest the quantities of produce required to meet population demands and make a living. Furthermore, farmers adhere to the strict application procedures and withholding periods that are provided by the authorities, making their produce safe for consumption when it hits the shelves in accordance to Australian guidelines.

Preparation Adjust pH to 6.5-7.0. Potash can be applied sparingly to boost potassium levels. Mulch/hill around stems as they grow. Start seeds in punnets of seed raising mix for planting out next month. Prepare bed by digging in a good scattering of blood and bone and dynamic lifter or manure, and adjust pH to 6.5 – 7.5 with dolomite. Add a layer of compost with a scattering of blood and bone to the bed then dig it all through thoroughly. Always plant seed direct and don’t use fresh manure. Plant seed direct and mulch thickly around the root zone to protect the shallow roots. Prep soil with blood and bone and plant seed direct. Frequent watering and liquid feeding throughout growth. Prep soil with blood and bone and plant seed direct. Regular liquid feeding and mulching whilst young. Plant seeds direct. Once seedlings are 15cm, sprinkle liquid feed and then mound the soil and mulch around the stem. Cut off side shoots or tillers to increase cob quality. Plant seedling or seed into a pocket filled with compost or seed raising mix. Plant cherry tomatoes around tepee and full sized tomatoes with stakes.

Quantity 20 plants each month. 6 of each every month or two. 3x1.5m rows every 2 weeks. 3 plants each month. 8 plants each month. 6 plants per season. Block of 12 or more. 4 of each per season.

Plant seed direct and mulch thickly around the root zone to protect the 4 of each plant shallow roots.
