O
n Thursday morning, Australia Day, we were up and about really early to make sure we arrived on time for the Citizenship Ceremony hosted by the Maleny Apex at the Maleny Showground. In my previous job as the Media Manager in the old days of Caloundra City Council, I attended many New Citizenship ceremonies at a number of locations, including the Events Centre at Caloundra which has a sense of formality about it, and in the park at Kings Beach in the belting sun, and sometimes in the Mayor’s office. No matter when I have attended, I always enjoy seeing the smiles and happiness of those that are taking their pledge and the pride they exhibit when holding on to their certificates and being photographed by their friends and family members. And the ceremony held at the showground in front of the T S Centaur - Naval Cadets Building and beside the Croquet Grounds was just as moving, It was great to see how pleased the participants were that this day marked the end of their time as a migrant from another land, and even if they have lived here for five, 10, 20 or even 40 years, that they can officially call Australia home. State Minister and Mayor demand action on medical school Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Cameron Dick visited the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital last week and declared that it’s time for Federal action to deliver the 15 additional medical places needed to establish a Medical School. “This issue has been bounced from Minister to Minister in the Turnbull Government for the last 14 months without resolution and time is running out,” the Minister said. “It’s clear the Turnbull Government is hiding behind their review into medical school placements across Australia and they are using it as an excuse to avoid making a decision. “The Turnbull Government has already acknowledged there should be a medical school on the Sunshine Coast. They should just go ahead and allocate the places.” The Minister said unless the additional 15 places are approved before February 15, there will be no medical school operating at SCUH by 2019. “The university partner has advised that this is the date on which a decision needs to be made to ensure adequate time to prepare for the 18-month process to attain Australian Medical Council accreditation,” he said. “I think the Sunshine Coast deserves more and we’re now at the tipping point and we need a solution. “I don’t care if the Prime Minister comes up with additional places, or redistributed places from other
states – we just need the places on the Sunshine Coast before February 15.” Mayor Mark Jamieson agrees. “The way it is shaping up, our Sunshine Coast University Hospital will be the only tertiary teaching hospital in Australia without a medical school,” said Mayor Jamieson. “That’s because the Federal Government has not allocated the additional 15 medical student places required. “Our community was promised a tertiary teaching hospital which has always been part of the planning and design. We deserve nothing less and will accept nothing less. “We need our community’s assistance to send that message to our Prime Minister and our Federal Government.” Council are running a campaign to convince the Federal Government to end the political procrastinating, which has only resulted in community frustration and uncertainty, and make an immediate decision to just allocate the extra 15 places now – see their website, www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, and search for ‘sunshine coast university hospital’. Considering that the dilemma has been ongoing since 2013 and local Federal Member Andrew Wallace has consistently stated that he is “…working to secure a positive outcome”, locals could be left to ask, why has it taken so long and what good has it done us so far? Tell us what you think. Send us a letter to the editor by emailing editorial@gcnews.com.au

Getting the 50th party started! Celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast officially kicked off last Friday with the announcement of the first round of the 50th Anniversary Fund grant recipients. Eighteen community groups have been awarded grants for a diverse range of activities which will form part of the 50th Anniversary program of celebrations. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the 50th Anniversary Fund was established to ensure there would be an engaging and exciting range of opportunities for the Sunshine Coast community to enjoy as the region celebrates the people, places and events that have contributed to the Coast’s story. “We had an overwhelming response to the 50th Anniversary Fund with more than 30 local community groups applying to develop projects to be part of the celebrations,” Mayor Jamieson said. “For this first round of grants from the 50th Anniversary Fund, we’ve been able to select a rich and diverse range of events, projects and activities which celebrate our history, lifestyle and local community. “Community days, a street fair, outdoor movie night, art exhibitions, a commemorative cookbook, concerts, musical tributes, heritage exhibitions and an open cockpit weekend are just some of the local community activities that will be sponsored by the 50th Anniversary Fund. The Mooloolah Public Hall Association has received funding for their 50 years of Mooloolah Memories (1967 to 2017).The project will feature a display in the local hall called 'Living in our Valley over the past 50 years'.
FEBRUARY $25 PROMOTION
This will include a photographic display, local area maps, land sales, newspaper items of interest, plus artefacts of local interest, all highlighting works carried out by the various councils in those 50 years and how Mooloolah has grown from a sleepy village into a prosperous country town. The Mapleton Men's Shed have transformed the original Mapleton Forestry Office barracks buildings (which were transported to the current site in 1967) into their Shed and will now establish an interpretative centre using ephemera collected from the site and the community. This centre will honour the work of our pioneers working in the forestry industry and will form part of the proposed 'heritage trail' that is being promoted by Mapleton and Districts Community Associations and the Information Centre as part of the 'whole of community' approach to celebrating the 50th anniversary. “This anniversary celebration is a great opportunity for us to showcase our history and future and celebrate our unique identity as a region," Mayor Jamieson said. “I encourage everyone in our community to take pride in this milestone for our region and enjoy and take part in the celebrations.” Applications for the second round of Category A grants will open on Monday, March 6 and close on Friday, May 19. Residents are also invited to share their favourite memories, photos, recollections and reminiscences via email fifty@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Selected memories will be shared throughout the year. Further information on all 50th Anniversary activities can be found at www.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au/fifty

Still fighting for flashing lights Glass House MP Andrew Powell is continuing to fight for flashing lights at Peachester and Glass House Mountains State Schools. On the back of yet another announcement by the Main Roads Minister this week that 100 additional schools in Queensland are set to receive flashing school zone signs in the 2017/18 budget, Mr Powell is demanding that Peachester and Glass House Mountains State Schools are not ignored again. Mr Powell has been campaigning on behalf of Peachester and Glass House Mountains students, parents and residents who desperately want to see flashing school zone lights installed at their schools. “Peachester State School is located on a busy tourist and truck traffic route and members of the school community have repeatedly asked for flashing lights to remind drivers a school zone is approaching,” Mr Powell said. Similarly the Glass House Mountains school community has been fighting for this safety measure to be re-installed at their school and Mr Powell said his requests to the Minister have fallen on deaf ears.

In December 2015, the number of premises in Queensland ready for service was 283,714, and by December 2016, that figure has grown to 740,513 state-wide. However, of those 740,513 premises ready for service, less than half of those homes and businesses have connected to the nbn. In the Gympie, Sunshine Coast and Noosa Council areas, over 61,000 premises are ready to order a service, with an additional 54,000 under construction. Locally, however, the picture isn’t so rosy. According to nbn website, the map displaying where the nbn network exists and where it’s under construction is somewhat empty for the Maleny and Glasshouse Country regions. In the Glasshouse Country townships, there is no activity in Mooloolah, Glenview, Landsborough, Mt Mellum, Glass House Mountains, Beerburrum and Peachester; with tiny parts of Beerwah and Palmview having nbn access – corresponding to a couple of new estate developments. Along the Blackall Ranges, the maps show that some parts of Mapleton, Flaxton and Kidaman Creek are shown to have fixed wireless
broadband access. Sections of Witta, Curramore, Elaman Creek and Reesville and west Montville are shown as being under construction. State Corporate Affairs Manager for Queensland Kylie Lindsay said that the rollout is in line with nbn’s plans and expectations and is an important step toward nbn reaching their goal of connecting eight million homes and businesses nationally by 2020. “Of course we encourage people not to wait, the sooner in the 18 month window that they connect to the nbn network, the sooner they get the benefits,” Ms Lindsay said. “Not all people require an nbn service, such as those who own holiday homes or prefer to use mobile solutions, but those who wish to keep their landline operating need to make the switch to the nbn. “All they need to do is contact their preferred service provider, discuss their options and order the plan that best suits their needs.” For more information on the nbn network and the rollout, please visit www.nbnco.com.au

Quarry development for Landsborough Another development application for a quarry has been received by Sunshine Coast Council, this time east of Landsborough. The Material Change of Use application relates to a parcel of land known as Alf’s Hill (or Alf’s Mountain), situated between Hapgood Road and the Bruce Highway. The site can be seen from the Bruce Highway as the large forested hill on the western side, about two kilometres north of the Bells Creek interchange. Surrounded by State Forest and National Park, the 64 hectare parcel of land is owned by civil construction company Shadforths and is currently zoned as Rural land. The development application identifies approximately 6,420,000 cubic metres of total extractable material which would be suitable for the planned Bruce Highway upgrade works and for the residential and associated developments at Harmony (Palmview) and Aura (Caloundra South). Operations would include some rock blasting as well as crushing and screening of material onsite. Plans submitted with the application show that the haulage route would traverse some internal forestry roads, onto Hapgood Road, then via Forestry Road and Dianella Road to join onto the Bruce Highway at the new Bells Creek interchange. It appears that approximately 100 truck movements a day are planned.

Smocking is the ultimate 'arty craft'
Beerwah is now home to the Laura May Smocking Group which meets at 10 Lyndie Court, Beerwah on the second Saturday of each month. Members produce a range of items for pre-term babies through the Sew Precious program, including gowns and noodle and peanut pillows which are distributed to hospitals locally and across the state. Displays and workshops are organised several times each year at Sunshine Coast Libraries as well as at community and commercial events, and members display their skills at local shows. Smocking involves fabric manipulation in a range of styles, including English counter change, 'classic' smocking and many ethnic methods. All provide exploration and challenges to reach the required outcomes in wonderful completed projects. We are offering an introductory workshop at our next meeting to be held on Saturday, February 11 at 10 Lyndie Court, starting at 10.00am. $10.00 covers your materials for the day, plus tuition and a delicious morning tea. Please phone Meg Hyde on 0408 276 571 to book.
Lions Biggest BBQ launch at Aussie Day Expo
The Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club launched the start of the ‘Lions Biggest BBQ’ for 2017 at the Maleny Aussie Day Expo held at the Maleny Showgrounds. The sausages sizzled and the lamingtons proved popular with the visitors as everything sold by the end of the morning. Over the year more barbecues and other related events will be held by Maleny Blackall Range Lions, together with Lions Clubs across Australia, to raise funds for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation (ALCCRF). Lions Australia has been supporting the fight against childhood cancer since 1976 and in that time cancer survival rates have improved to about 80%, however, every year in Australia more than 800 children are diagnosed with cancer and three Australian children die from cancer every week. It remains the most common cause of death in childhood in Australia. The Lions Kids Cancer Genome Project was recently established in Australia and will provide whole genome sequencing and analysis to 400
David Purcell and Rob Hobson were on the barbecue and Diane Wade, Mike Topping and Glenn Beauleiu had the drinks and lamingtons covered children with high risk cancer in Australia in the first three years. Lions Club International Foundation and the ALCCRF will fund the whole genome sequencing of tumours for children with high risk cancers to facilitate the development of a database of kids’ cancer genomes which will be available to researchers and clinicians. It will, however be necessary to raise more funds to complete the project in order to make the potential a reality for children in Australia and the world. If any organisation, club, business or organisation in the Maleny Blackall Range area would like the Lions to provide a barbecue for an event and would like to help raise the much needed funds, and help save the lives of children, please contact Diane on 0403 871 842. More information in relation to the ALCCRF can be found online at www.alccrf.lions.org.au

Community drivers needed
By Sonia Clark Glasshouse Country Care (GCC) are on the lookout for volunteer drivers who can help their clients with transport to and from medical appointments, physio and hospital visits, shopping and even hair appointments. The not for profit organisation is committed to assisting ageing and elderly people as well as those with disabilities with a range of services and support programs to allow clients to remain functionally independent in their homes for as long as possible. More volunteer drivers are required to meet the current demand. GCC need responsible, community-minded individuals with a current driver’s licence, available on week days, who are able to offer their time for a few hours or a few days a week. Why learn to play bridge?
By Martine Geodhart Bridge is played by over 220 million people world-wide. Bridge is the most popular card game in the world. As a social game, bridge is a great game to meet new people – it is probably the only competitive activity that all generations can do together and all have an equal chance of winning. No matter where you go, you can always make new friends at the bridge table. It is mentally challenging, it is a great retirement hobby, something you can share with your life partner, and it offers lots of social interaction with people of all ages and from all walks of life. It can be played on-line as well as in a club, it is inexpensive, it can be enjoyed anywhere in the world (including on cruise ships!); and … it is lots of fun. The medical profession is only now coming to realise that, as people are tending to live longer, remaining mentally fit may be as important as maintaining levels of physical fitness. More and more often chess, bridge and crossword puzzles are being cited as excellent activities for keeping the brain exercised and stalling the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The Beerwah Bridge Club is three years young and is going from strength to strength. At the moment we have close to 50 members and we meet twice a week in the clubhouse of the Beerwah Golf Club. New lessons start on Friday, February 10 at 9.30am. The cost will be $20.00 for eight lessons. For more information, please call John Marsden on 5494 2584 or Martine Goedhart on 5496 9855.

Talented kids
Following on from last year's Beerwah Talent Search that was held in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports Day Spring Carnival, we thought it’d be fun to interview some of the younger winners from the event about how they felt about winning. To keep it easy for them we have used a standard question and answer format.
Teagan Potter
12-year-old dancer Teagan Potter was awarded first place in the intermediate section and she answered the following questions: Q. How long have you been performing for? A. Mum says that I was born performing! I have been dancing since 2008, when I was three and a half. I started at the Peachester Hall with Miss Mel, I moved to SCPAC in 2011 with Miss Bonnie Anthony, and I'm still there today. In 2012 I joined their Performance team as a Baby Bopper and that's when I really started performing! Q. How do you feel about winning? A. I felt really overwhelmed at first, and still can't quite believe it as there were such good acts performing. It felt really cool to dance in front of my community. Q. What did your act involve? A. My act was a contemporary piece that I choreographed myself to ‘Letter to the playground bully, by Andrea, age eight and half’. It took about 1-2 hours for 4-5 weeks to complete, and then about half an hour a week to revise and keep improving it.
Q. What made you pick your performance piece? A. I picked it because I have been bullied before, and it hits a chord within me. I see it happen to others as well, and I just want to make people think about how they treat others. Q. What are you plans from here? A. I guess my plans are to keep training so I can keep improving. I'm at my happiest when I am performing.
Madeleine Roulston
Glasshouse Christian College student Maddie Roulston was placed second in the intermediate section. Q. How long have you been performing for? A. I have been playing the harp for around four years, and have been doing performances at school, in aged care facilities and for other small events for as long as I have been playing. Q. How do you feel about winning? A. I am very happy to have placed and didn't expect to after seeing the many talented acts in my age group. Q. What did your act involve? A. Playing ‘Wrecking Ball’ on the harp. Q. What made you pick your performance piece? A. I played ‘Wrecking Ball’ for my performance because it's something a lot of people don't expect to hear on a harp, and I really enjoy playing modern songs that surprise audiences. It is also a great piece of music and sounds beautiful on the harp.

Q. What are your influences? A. I have wanted to play the harp since a very young age, and my first harp was actually made by my grandfather, which was very helpful in getting me started. My harp teacher (Kim Kirkman) has also inspired me and helps me to constantly improve my skills on the harp so that I am able to teach myself a lot of songs. Q. What are your plans from here? A. I will continue to perform at events in the community, and often one leads to another. I love performing at small events where I can just have fun, gain experience and grow my harp skills.
Angus Joyce
Angus was the youngest winner on the day and his answers, while short, were nicely to the point! Angus Joyce was awarded first place in the junior section and he answered the following questions: Q: How long have you been performing for? A: Since I met Andino the Magician (one year ago at the Charity Sports Day). Q: How do you feel about winning? A: Proud. Q: What did your act involve? A: Magic. Q. What made you pick your performance piece? A: I was really good at these tricks. Q: What are your influences (if applicable)? A: Andino and Penn & Teller. Q: What are you plans from here? A: I would like to do Street Magic.

Retirement and mental health for blokes Contributed by Bob McLean The first combined gathering of the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group and the Glasshouse Country Menshed was in December with guest speaker Craig Allingham who spoke about post Prostate Cancer (PC) surgery and managing continence. The next gathering will be held next week on Wednesday, February 8, at the Menshed. The gathering will be addressed by a support team from Ozcare and the subject will be ‘Managing Mental Health and Dementia’. The main objective for both the support groups is to provide support for men and their families post-surgery. Most men find the first year reasonably easy as it is all new, doing all those jobs that have been there for some time or being advised by medical support people to
deal with their rehabilitation. Then comes the gap, they spend time alone in their shed, they start to talk to the bench, the dog and whatever is about. If the dog is the ‘Black Dog’ (another name for depression) then it can be a good time to head along to the Menshed and learn new skills, meet some great blokes and join in the regular information sessions on men's health. All men and their partners are invited to come along to the Menshed on Wednesday morning on February 8 at 9.15 for a 9.30 start, for an hour. You can also have a good look around and have a cuppa with the men and take away some new information on good health. The Menshed is located at 352 Peachester Road, Beerwah, in the grounds of Glasshouse Country Care.

Determination to achieve financial goals Jason and Jackie Talbot Business feature are a South Australian couple who have shown incredible resilience and determination to continue with their small business goals even in the face of personal adversity. The couple were originally planning to establish their business reselling Transportable Shade Sheds last year when disaster struck and they had to redirect their attention to personal matters. Last September, during the process of final negotiating to become resellers, their house burnt down. Understandably the couple had to put their business plans on hold while they sought to rebuild both their house and lives. Rehoused in a caravan while looking to rebuild; a couple of weeks later their caravan was caught in the huge super storms that hit South Australia and their caravan sustained extensive damage. While these events proved to be extremely challenging for Jason and Jackie they remained committed to following through with their goals to set up Jason as his own boss and in some ways the additional focus provided welcome relief from the challenges of rebuilding their home. “Jason was always really keen to pursue this opportunity and setting up the business was especially good for Jason during this time as it gave him a positive focus of something to get on with … away from the house rebuild and dealing with the insurance companies etc,” explained Jackie. Based in Snowtown in South Australia, Jason originally came across the business opportunity to resell Transportable Shade Sheds in and around his rural area. While Jackie has fulltime work in the busy grain industry, employment opportunities for Jason who has a construction and labouring background has been challenging and so the chance to resell a quality, Australian manufactured, fully adaptable product was incredibly appealing. The idea to become a small business owner reselling Transportable Shade Sheds was driven by Jason’s enthusiasm to make some money and finally be his own boss and that the product perfectly suited to the surrounding rural industries and area. The couple spent time looking into the options and satisfied that it could be a viable opportunity they decided to go ahead and invest in their future. During the unexpected turn of events which put their business ownership plans on hold, the team at Transportable Shade Sheds worked tirelessly to ensure that the couple’s options remained open. Now that their house has been rebuilt, the couple are ready to go and are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. With a teenage son, the couple have set up the business to also provide for future employment opportunities for him. While still a young teenager, the plan is for him to help out his dad on weekends and get to learn about the products but as the business grows the possibilities are endless. If you know someone looking for a Transportable Shade Shed around the Snowtown / Balaklava area please contact Jason via email at talbyandson@ gmail.com. If you would like to find out more about opportunities in your area or are keen to be your own boss or look at business options that may work well with your current industry, then contact the team at Transportable Shade Sheds on 1300 667 433 or Saver6.com on 1300 918 771.
School News School years kicks off with smiles Contributed by Kylie Merola After the Summer holiday break, the classrooms and playgrounds at Landsborough State School are once again filled with energy, excitement and laughter now that the academic year is officially underway. Staff and students are prepped for a busy year ahead. The school has experienced an influx of new families and increased enrolment numbers, resulting in the creation of extra classes. The first day of school, Monday, January 23, was a morning of excitement and smiles as families were welcomed into the school grounds. Newly pressed uniforms, new school supplies, and enthusiastic students and parents entered the classroom doors with refreshed faces, all eager to start the new school year. Principal Brendan Bopf explained, “I'm thrilled to begin 2017 with a surge in enrolment numbers and I look forward to getting to know so many new families this year, as well as catch-up with our extremely dedicated group of current families. We anticipate this will be an outstanding year at Landsborough State School."

Stimulating environment for learning
Staff of the River School spent the week leading up to the start of the new school year engaging in a variety of professional development activities. The theme of ‘Family and cultivating positive relationships on all levels’ emerged as the focus for 2017. Deputy Principal Ann Donoghoe said this theme was particularly relevant as this year sees the introduction of four multi-age family groupings for students in Prep to Year 3. Multi-age grouping, as opposed to composite classes, enables students to learn in a stimulating environment of mixed ages and abilities. It is a holistic, inclusive and creative approach to inquiry-based learning that celebrates diversity and caters for individual needs. The Ananda Marga River School runs an Early Education Centre and Primary School from Prep to Year 6. For more information and contact details please visit www.amriverschool.org

First day of Prep
The first day of school for approximately 80 Prep students at Glasshouse Christian College was full of smiles and excitement. Some students knew each other from kindergarten, but others made friends before even entering the classroom. GCC Prep teachers have been introducing little children to school life for years and they know how to do it well. Activities are set up for the students as they arrive and everything has their name on it. Mums, dads, and grandparents are warmly welcomed and then it is time for them to leave before anyone can become too emotional. There were a few tears among the parents but they were taken care of at the Tim Tam and Tissues event which is held every year outside the library. Parents are greeted by Cheryl Bryers, Head of Primary, and the College Pastors are there to offer a sympathetic ear or shoulder to cry on. Chocolate and coffee work their magic and soon all tears are dried. The Prep students were oblivious to their parents’ emotions and embraced all the fun and activity of school life very quickly. They began the day singing and enjoying fun learning activities and then explored the campus. Preppies visited the library, were shown specialist classrooms where they will learn Music, French and Sport, had time to check out the huge playground, and toured the kitchen garden. It was a wonderful beginning to what will be a huge part of the students’ life for the next 13 years.
Charlotte Collins, Estelle Collins and Ava Mensah are ready for all the fun and activity in Prep
Hudson O’Brien, Bailey James, Hamish White, Hunter Watson and Bryce Stout have already made friends before entering the classroom
Sweet welcome for students and families
Contributed by Michelle Lenz The beginning of a new school year is here at Mooloolah State School in 2017. Both new and returning students and their families were welcomed into the school this week, including many excited Prep students. There were many happy, smiling faces, keen to get to their new class and meet their teachers and friends and begin their schooling year. A fantastic atmosphere Archer Knott could be felt throughout the school as students wore their blue and gold uniform with pride. The Prep students for 2017 were enthusiastic as they entered their classroom. Their faces showed expressions of happiness, excitement, and even fear. But any nervousness from parents or students soon faded as they settled in with the Prep teacher, Miss Innis. The P&C along with the Principal, Mr Adam Poulus, offered coffee and cake at the front of the school so parents and families could feel relaxed, chat to new and old friends and ask any questions they may have had. So Mooloolah State School, where ‘Pride in our Achievement’ is our motto, would like to welcome you all and look forward to many fantastic adventures and opportunities to come in 2017.

Environment Feral cats run rampant New research, led by Dr Sarah Legge from The University of Queensland, brings together evidence from nearly 100 separate studies across the country to show that feral cats cover more than 99.8% of Australia’s land area, including its islands. “Australia’s feral cat population fluctuates between 2.1 million when times are lean, up to 6.3 million when widespread rain results in plenty of available prey,” Dr Legge said. In a worrying find, cat densities were the same both inside and outside conservation reserves, such as national parks. “This shows that declaring protected areas is not enough on its own to safeguard native wildlife,” Dr Legge said. “Our study highlights the scale and impact of feral cats and the urgent need to develop effective control methods, and to target our efforts in areas where control will produce the biggest gains. “At the moment feral cats are undermining the efforts of conservation managers and threatened species recovery teams across Australia.” Dr Legge said that, in addition to strategic cat control in bushland areas, there was a need to address feral cats in heavily urbanised areas where their population density could be 30 times higher than in natural environments. As well as preying on threatened native species in and near to urban areas, urban feral cats can provide a source of further feral cats to bushland areas. Australia’s Threatened Species commissioner Gregory Andrews said findings substantiated the need for a humane and effective cull. “Feral cats have already driven at least 20 Australian mammals to extinction, which makes investing in research like this important,” he said. with Ann McGrath Feed the birds, tuppence a bag … Tuppence? More like $15! Some people do and some people don’t. Most of us sit somewhere on the continuum. A search of the internet will provide a wealth of information regarding the pros and cons of feeding wild birds. For those who do, it is fascinating to be able to observe bird behaviour at close range, especially when juveniles are involved. When the environment has limited vegetation, feeding the birds will guarantee that you will see at least some of our native birds. There are many reasons given for not feeding wild birds. What has been proven is that if the birds have an abundant food source they will produce more young who will survive. This needs to be taken into account when deciding what feed to use and how often to feed. We belong to the ‘don’t feed’ camp. We stopped some time ago when the magpies who were being fed decided that they owned all food of any description that appeared and became very aggressive toward all other birds who dared to approach. Eventually all we saw were magpies. If you would like to encourage a wider variety of wild birds, try a diverse planting of local natives: grasses, small-flowering shrubs and trees that provide fruit and seed. Your local native nursery can help with the selection. And don’t forget the bird bath so you still get to see many of the birds up close and personal and they will thank you – especially in this hot weather. Just gotta love the bush!

Gardners Falls tragedy
Phone towers and the property market Mr Muller (GCMN, 18/1/17) has taken umbrage at my use of one paper on the effects of EMR towers on property prices. I did actually find nearly 12 articles from around the world on property values and I searched more and found another seven, which brings it to 19. However Mr Muller is quietly content to focus on just one article from NZ. He accused me of “grab-bagging” and “cherry picking”. The very funny thing is he has actually cherry picked sentences from the NZ paper by Sandy Bond PhD that support him, but he has missed whole sections in the conclusions that show the opposite. He says it’s “unpublished'” – it was published in The Appraisal Journal, Summer 2005. In the Introduction it says, "Both the survey and market sales analysis find that CPBSs (Cellphone base stations) have a negative impact on the prices of houses in the study areas." In the section headed Limitations of the Research it says, "The main limitation affecting this survey was in the selection of the case study areas. Thus, caution must be used in making generalizations from this study or applying the results directly to other similar studies or valuation assignments.” And in the Summary it says, "The issue of greatest concern for survey respondents in both the case study and control areas is the impact of proximity to CPBSs on future property values.
“Overall, respondents would pay from 10% - 19% less to over 20% less for a property if it were in close proximity to a CPBS". And, "The results of the sales analysis show prices of properties were reduced by around 21% after a CPBS was built in the neighbourhood." The full paper is 22 pages long. If you read the lot, the writers make it very clear phone towers effect property prices. Regardless of the reasons, property prices go down – and it seems by a value of around 20%, which is exactly what the Maleny property agent indicated to us here. Then Mr Muller ignored the other paper – The National Institute for Science, Law & Public Policy's survey ‘Neighborhood Cell Towers & Antennas – Do They Impact a Property's Desirability?’ June, 2014. It found that 94% of respondents reported that nearby towers and antennas would impact interest in a property and the price they would be willing to pay for it. And 79% said under no circumstances would they ever purchase or rent a property within a few blocks of a phone tower or antenna. Richard Giles Conondale Editor’s Note - Thanks to Richard and Gerry Muller for their extended rigorous debate but I think it is time to call time, and for you to agree to disagree.
The recent platypus death at Gardeners Falls has left me feeling sad and appalled at some humans' behaviour. Quite frankly - I'm ashamed. I have written to Councillor Jenny McKay and will be rallying to create more staff and monitoring at this supposed area of rest and relaxation. What is also sad is the people who go there with eskies full of alcohol, loud music, marijuana, and other drugs. I have found used needles, broken glass and rubbish. This is a serious situation that needs a solution. Hannah Bruzova Booroobin

Learn to recover from the post-Christmas financial blues There’s no time of year more exciting than Christmas – but the truth is that once it ends, it’s common to feel a little blue. The gifts, the meals, the special time with friends and family – they’re all over until next December. And also, there’s usually a financial crunch that comes with wrapping up the holiday season. If you’re like most people, you probably spent beyond your budget in December. All the presents, meals and travel expenses added up, and now that it’s January, you’re probably dealing with a bit of a spending hangover. So what’s the cure? If you’re hoping 2017 can be a year of making strong investing decisions, how can you make
moves in January to get back on track? If you’re thinking of taking out a home loan and making a serious commitment to buying property in 2017, the first step is to get yourself back on the path to responsible spending. In December, you probably overextended yourself financially. It’s time to correct that error in January, making reasonable choices that will keep your finances in good shape. For example, you can cook cheap, healthy meals at home instead of eating out. Instead of seeing a movie in the theater, you can rent one more affordably. These little changes in your habits can help you right the ship.
For anyone who’s considering property investment loans this year, having good credit is a prerequisite. If you added to your credit card debt in December, it’s time to pay off those debts and get more responsible now, according to The Globe and Mail. If you’re able to be smart about debt in the early part of 2017, you may be able to quickly rebuild your credit and make yourself look much better on your next loan application. Are you getting ready to invest in property soon? If so, you probably have all sorts of questions. How much can I borrow? When can I borrow it? The list goes on.
The last thing you want to do is complicate that conversation by piling up excessive debt after the holidays. Talk to the expert Teresa from Smartline right away, and we can give you the guidance you need to restore your financial health.

By Sonia Clark ‘Club Acoustic’, the monthly open mic night at the Maleny RSL, is back for 2017. Running on the first Thursday of every month, the event features a huge range of talent from locally based performers to those from further afield. Following the closure earlier last year of the much loved ‘Upfront Club’, ‘Club Acoustic’ fills the gap in providing a local platform for musicians and artists to perform. Hosted by the Maleny RSL and run by Mark ‘Sparky’ Paltridge and ‘Regalia’ (alter ego of Range music teacher Jacinta Foale), the night features a huge array of talent from near and far with a diversity of performances and styles. On any given night the audience are treated to approximately 10 acts, with performances ranging from acoustic sets to folk rock, from spoken word artists to jazz musicians getting their jam on. Billed as the ‘Blackboard Session’ – performers can just turn up at door and put their name down to be allocated a set. Since last year, the nights have steadily grown in popularity with regular audience numbers of around 100 people. Set up like a concert venue, the evening makes full use of Mark’s sound and lighting expertise and his professional PA system, the RSL theatre lights, and the small stage setup, to allow both audience and performers the chance to engage in a creatively inspiring environment. Kid friendly, entry is only $5.00 with a fully licensed bar available and delicious dining options from rotating caterers. Doors open 6.00pm. The rhythm of life Music works in time. Unlike the visual arts which are composed on a canvas or space, a piece of music unfolds in time. And in considering a piece’s time, the most basic part, at least in popular music, is its rhythm, groove or beat. It has a tempo (in beats per minute or bpm), closely followed by its time signature (e.g. three four, which at its simplest means three beats in a bar). Other descriptions concern the feel and style (e.g. bolero / latin / reggae / funk, etc). And that, to a large degree, covers a description of the rhythm of most popular music, but it certainly doesn’t begin to portray the subtlety found in musical performance. You only have to listen to two performers playing the same piece to realize how differently artists realise rhythm in their playing. To a large degree our life is dominated by a sense of rhythm; the constant pulse of the clock (60 bpm), our heartbeat and the rhythm of our breathing for a start. If you are sensitive to rhythm you realise that everything you do has a rhythm – the way you walk and talk for example. Each task you take on, from reaching out to open and close a door, to making a meal, has a rhythm all its own. I wonder if you sense that or can at least draw something from it? If you find that music doesn’t reach or move you as much as some of your acquaintances, perhaps through developing your sensitivity to it, you can build a better connection. How are you affected by the tempo or speed of a piece of music? Do you respond differently if it is at a walking pace (whatever that might be for you), as against a heart rate pace (which for an adult might be anywhere between 60 and 100 bpm). I love the freedom implied in such in-exactitude as it recognizes how different we all are! One of the simplest ways to get more in touch with the rhythm of a piece of music is to move with it. That might be as simple as nodding your head, tapping your foot or dancing with it, or, as with many of my colleagues, it might be the pleasure you can get from creating complex counter rhythms, tapped out on a table in front of you, or perhaps just heard in your head. Viva la difference!

Cheaper public transport fares Although we’re not there yet on frequency and convenience of services, great news – Translink have introduced three new zones which should reduce their fares, so why not give public transport a go? In addition to the new zones and cheaper fares, seniors travel free after two journeys each day and children aged 5-14 travel free on weekends when using a child 'go card'.
Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra Landsborough Rail Overpass proposal update Thank you to everyone who attended the community forum late last year to discuss the Government’s current proposal for the Landsborough Rail Overpass. The turnout was considerable with many lending their voice to a robust discussion on the matter; I would have expected no less from the Landsborough community. For those who were not able to attend the forum, a number of important questions were raised about how this proposal could impact businesses, residential property and ultimately the livelihood of Landsborough. We also heard some community suggestions for an alternative to the overpass including traffic lights, relocating the overpass, and even a rail underpass. We each have our own views on the proposal as we will each be impacted differently, but what is clear is the frustration felt all around. The Department of Transport and Main Roads have stated in their short October 2016 publication regarding the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade project, that their team “is committed to engaging with the community” on this matter. However, the feedback collected at our forum demonstrates how many people feel that adequate measures have not been taken by the Department to keep them informed – especially those whose property or businesses will be directly impacted under this plan. We want to work with the government to get a win-win solution, but if the government does not come to the party and acts alone, the people of this community will turn. I will do what I can to ensure that our concerns are heard. My office has been working to collate the hundreds of the enquiry forms submitted, detailing your suggestions and other solutions for this proposal. I will now take these messages to the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Building Queensland in preparation for a second community forum with their project managers in attendance. In the coming weeks and months I will keep you updated with any new information via email with the details you provided to my office. A dedicated page has also been created on my website –www. markmcardlemp.com – where you can view the Government’s proposal and continue to submit your suggestions by completing the enquiry form.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News has played a vital part in establishing my business I started advertising approximately nine years ago and over that time it has consistently brought me new clients. The newspaper is a nice quick read in our busy society with enough information to keep residents within the area up to date on local events and services.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who is establishing a new business.

Much more than a cafe, its a meeting place and a party destination When Selina and Chrissie Dittmann opened ‘Our Country Kitchen’ nearly six months ago they knew exactly the kind of place they wanted to create: somewhere that would be quiet, comfortable, with a welcoming environment where their customers would feel relaxed. I reckon the girls have pretty much nailed it. As you walk into the Queenslander-style building with its walls made from tongue and groove boards, its high ceilings, and its gingham tablecloths, you feel like you have been transported back to a time where things were simpler. And while their menu does incorporate the foods that are on-trend for our sophisticated appetites, they also offer some of the traditional favourites from the past, and they are always willing to customise to the customers’ requirements. Salina explained that for the vegetarians looking for burgers, they can replace the meat with a nice juicy mushroom, or for those that don’t want carbs she has made a ‘deconstructed burger’ with all of the burger fillings placed on a plate (without the bread), and for those who follow a gluten free
diet they offer two types of gluten free bread. Over the past six months the café has been building up a reputation both with locals and visitors. Chrissy said lots of friends and families use the café as a meeting point and location to catch up. There are also plenty of locals who have their meetings there, and they have even had a group who met up for a book club meeting. As well as their meals served in the café, they also do catering and takeaway and they have even been doing a lunch delivery to local businesses in Landsborough. As word gets out about the talented Dynamic Dittmann Duo and also what a great venue ‘Our Country Kitchen’ is, they are getting requests for special events. They recently hosted a baby shower for 35 guests, a surprise 30th party on a Saturday night, they have a booking for a 50th, and clearly one of their very favourite events was a ‘Movie Party’ for their very appreciative 10-year-old nephew Craig. Birthday boy Craig reckons his party was great,
OPEN TUESDAY TO SUNDAY
8AM TO 6PM
and the highlight was not just the movie but the excellent food his Aunties served. Apparently Craig’s party has raised the bar in the expectation of birthday parties in his class. They have also been holding an artisans market on the second Saturday of the month between 9.00am and 2.00pm with live music in the café. Not satisfied that they are doing enough during their opening hours – from 8.00am to 6.00pm Tuesday to Saturday – they have now decided to open for evening meals on a Friday night, with orders taken between 6.00pm and 8.00pm. The first night of service will be on Friday, March 3, which they will kick off with a small selection of traditional style meals which, like everything they do, will offer value for money. If you are keen to head along to try out their evening menu the girls would appreciate it if you make sure you give them a call to reserve a table. To keep up with everything that is happening at ‘Our Country Kitchen’, make sure you like their Facebook page.
Good, old fashioned country cooking with a smile!

It doesn’t happen often, but when it does - things can go wrong … I strongly recommend that landlords do not make direct contact or enter into any informal agreements with their tenant without first consulting their property manager. There are prescribed notices and important processes that must
be adhered with to avoid costly fines. You also need to be cautious that all parties are acting in accordance with legislative requirements.

In the Garden with Brownie
Jobs for the yard in February • Citrus trees are heavy feeders and need fertilising now. Use a specific citrus fertiliser and apply at the rate on the bag. • Tidy up the strawberry beds. Remove any dead or diseased plants, weed and give them a fertilise. Keep them well watered so they will produce runners for next season. • Fertilise your camellia sasanqua bushes as the buds appear. Use a special camellia and azalea fertiliser. • Remove the spent flowering stems of agapanthus. You can collect the seed and grow them yourself if you wish. • Prepare bulb beds and beds for spring-flowering annuals with deep digging, addition of organic matter and mulching. Start looking in books or on the internet for different spring flowering bulbs you might like to order this month and plant in autumn. • Once the sweet corn has finished, start to prepare it for peas and snow pea crops by digging in some garden lime to raise the pH level in preparation for March/April planting. Chop up the old sweet corn plants and dig them back into the garden as organic matter. A mower with a catcher does a good job of this if you don’t have a mulcher. • Take softwood cuttings of geraniums and pelargonium so that you can strike them and create new plants. • Sew broccoli and cabbage seeds now and raise them for planting in March and April. • It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Remove any scale from indoor plants using soapy water and a soft toothbrush. • To treat lawn grubs, try sprinkling the area with a little laundry powder, and then water it in. The grubs will come to the surface and the birds will then feast on them. Vegetables Plant eggplant, capsicum, radish, cucumber, lettuce, sweet corn, beetroot, zucchini, leek, silver beet, parsnip, potato, rhubarb, turnip, choko, pumpkin, snake beans, carrot, celery, melons, spring onion, squash and sweet potato.
Planting for Wildlife workshop ‘Planting for Wildlife: butterflies, bees, bugs and other mini-beasts’ will be the subject of a one-day workshop being run by Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare (MRW&L) at their nursery on Steve Irwin Way, Glenview on Saturday, February 11, from 8.45am until 3pm. The workshop will focus on the world of invertebrates which comprises no less than 97% of all animal species on Earth. The presenter for the day, Helen Schwencke, is a biologist and ecologist. Helen was instrumental in founding the Butterfly and Other Invertebrates Club in 1994, and for organising Woodfordia’s Butterfly Project since 2004. Helen is author of 'Create More Butterflies', and produces Butterfly Ecology and Interpretation signs for over 50 different butterfly host plants. Biodiversity is the key to maintaining the unique and wonderful wildlife that is part of the environment in which we live. All creatures great and small are important, even the pesky mud wasps that seem to be able to find the most inappropriate places to build. Planting to support and encourage the preservation and flourishing of our environment is a vital role that we can all play. During the day participants will learn of the important role that ‘mini-beasts’ play in the overall balance of our environment, how they live their lives and the plants they need for their survival. You will explore the plants for ‘mini-beasts’ and their eggs and learn about rescuing very small creatures. The workshop is designed for adults and children over the age of 8, and everyone will be given something special to take home. Cost is only $10.00 per adult, $5.00 for primary aged children, and MRW&L members are free. The workshop is proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council. For complete details and bookings for the workshop visit the website at www.mooloolahwaterwatchandlandcare.org For further information, contact the MRW&L nursery on 54947463 or email mrwloffice@gmail.com

A couple of us were talking the other day about the American election, and without wishing to offend anyone, speculating just how interesting American politics is going to be for the next four years. I genuinely feel for our politicians, they don’t have an easy task, no matter what they do they are going to offend someone. That’s why we Christians are told to pray for our leaders whether we agree with them or not. God tells us that we are to submit to and obey not only the good leaders but also the bad leaders as well. However, as we pray for our leaders God also puts things in perspective. In the book of Daniel, the King Nebuchadnezzar (605- 662 BC) King of the ancient Babylonian Empire has a dream. He sees a huge terrifying statue, with a head made of gold, a body made of fine silver, stomach of bronze, legs of iron and feet of iron and clay. Then he sees a boulder snap off a mountain and this boulder somehow smashes this imposing statue. Nebuchadnezzar doesn’t know what the dream GCNEWS Add sept 12 2013.ai 1 10/02/2015 5:26:35 PM means but Daniel interprets it. empires which follow after the Babylonian Empire. And one day these kingdoms will be crushed and replaced with a kingdom that comes from Heaven itself. This kingdom from Heaven will endure forever. Bible scholars have debated what these kingdoms were since the day the dream was given. Most assume it refers to the Persian, the Greek, the Roman and then the Caesar Empires – while others see a future kingdom still to come. But regardless of what the pieces look like, the intent is clear, kingdoms come and kingdoms go. They might be impressive like gold or silver or strong like iron, but kingdom’s come and kingdoms go. Politicians will come and go, nations will rise and fall, that is the nature of this world. But there is one kingdom that will last forever. That’s God’s kingdom. So while we can worry about election results or land grabs or balance of trading, Daniel’s interpretation reminds us that these things are fleeting – that there is only one kingdom truly worth belonging to. That is the kingdom that God has given – Jesus’s. So the question we should be asking is not, “Who are you voting for?” Rather it should be: “Whose kingdom are you in?”

FEBRUARY 1 2017
Sport Maleny Bowls Club
Contributed by Ian Hansen Monday, January 23, the Monthly Jackpot Pairs Day could have been renamed Mapleton’s Day as their players took all prizes bar third prize in the raffle. Jeffrey Waldon of Kilcoy took third prize in the raffle to prevent a complete Mapleton victory. The Winners with two wins +24 were Brian Read and Ray Burgess and the Runners-up with +11 in the second game were Ed Haller and Graeme Hepleton. The Raffle Winners were Allan Lewis first prize and Brian Read second. The Jackpot wasn’t won when negative 5 was drawn from the barrel. Surprised it didn’t go to a Mapleton Pair to make it a total wipe-out. Once again it seems as if there were insufficient players for the Tuesday competition as no results were recorded and the jackpot wasn’t won. Wednesday evening there was a full green for the Twilight Challenge and the winning teams were: Mavericks, Cookies, Bridge Club, The Grove, Wotnots, Handles, Mighty 10 and Sunstone. The Lucky Draw winners were: Lead - David Edwards, Second - Trevor Dunn and Skip - Allan Cook. The Touchers went to Melita Gesch, David Edwards and Brian Fripp. The Money Board Winners were Ray Pantlin and of course Joe Walters. Friday, there were four rinks of Scroungers and the Winners on their respective rinks were Robbie Deans (Glasshouse visitor), John Kapetanic, Doug McGufficke and Ian Chatterton. The only Sponsors’ Prize winner present was Tye Newton. There must have been an error with the Money Board as neither Joe Walters nor Allan Cook was the winner. In fact it went to the scribe. I’m told that Thursday at the Showgrounds a lot of interest was shown in bowls and many thanks to all the helpers who made the day so successful. This week there was Jackpot Pairs/Triples Tuesday, the ever popular Twilight Challenge Wednesday evening and Scroungers Friday afternoon. Four of our members, David Austin, Graeme Glover, Miles Allen and Allan Cook are competing in a Two Day Carnival at Caloundra Central over the weekend. Three games of 16 ends both Saturday and Sunday. At time of writing I have no results but I’m sure they would have found the games very competitive as the good players come out of the woodwork when there is a significant amount of prize money. Hope you had a great time and were able to share in some of the cash.

Brisbane Lions great is coming to visit
Contributed by Craig Bales Triple Premiership and Brownlow Medallist Simon Black will be visiting the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions AFL Club on Saturday, February 4 at 1.00pm as part of the club's sign on weekend! He will be there for a kick and catch as well as talking to kids about footy and signing the odd autograph at the Tunnel Ridge Road facility in Landsborough. This year the club is very excited to be offering for the first time an Under 6s competition as well as an Under 13s girls’ team – the club is keen to push for enough girls to have two teams submitted in the competition. With these additions to our Under 8s, 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s and Girls Under 15s and Under 18s, we are expecting another big year for the club. For any dads out there who would like to relive their glory days, the club will again be combining with Bribie and submitting a Masters Team (Over 35s) this season, and training will start this Thursday at 5.45pm at Tunnel Ridge Road with a ‘light’ run. Training is held one night per week for approximately an hour and games are played every second week with the season due to start in early April. Glasshouse Bowls Club
Contributed by David Hayes With our green now open for 2017 it is time to welcome everyone back for what will hopefully be a great year of bowls. The 2017 playing calendar which you all should have by now is huge. If not please pick one up at the office. Last week Dennis Hume, John McSwain, David Hayes, Ron Rix, along with some help from Doug Sweedman, Kerry Molloy, Jack Timm and Graham Condie spent Monday clearing out the office for vinyl to be laid. Over the next few days myself, Dennis and John put the office back while also doing a big clean up. Thanks to those who turned up and helped. So far a few of our members have played in three rounds of Premier 7s which got underway two weeks ago. This is our first year participating in this competition instead of Super Challenge. We have division 1 and 3 with one game played away and two at home for each division so far. First division had a great win at home against Mooloolaba last weekend to be one win from three. Division 3 also had a win against Brighton to be two wins from three games. Next week’s games are both away to Caloundra and Chermside. It will also be the first week of the Hinterland Challenge with the Men at Mapleton for a 1.00pm game. Our ladies have two sides, which is great, and will both meet at home in round 1 at 9.00am. Wednesday 25: This was the first game of social bowls for the year with a great turnout. Chris Dougan, Viv James and Rhyllis Aitken def Millie Freshwater, Joy Reason and Tony Brown 26-22. Lee Meyers, John Aitken and Jan Lawson def Russell Walmsley, Noelle Dean and John McSwain 24-18. Marilyn Podmore, Dennis Hume and Ron Rix def Graham Meyers, Lyn Griffiths and Jack Timm 25-16. Maz Idle and Warren Blackbourne def Greg Sauer and Chris Freshwater 25-14. Jenny Hobson and Di Hume def Graham Condie and Joy Sauer 24-13. Our first Thursday afternoon of bowls is this week. It will be club-select so put your name down if you would like a game. As always we still need more help around the club so the same people are not doing all the work. So, if you could spare some time, it would be great!

Just for Laughs
It Costs No More To Hire A Proven Professional
The winter boots Did you hear about the teacher who was helping one of her pupils put on his boots? He asked for help and she could see why. Even with her pulling, and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said, “Teacher, they're on the wrong feet.” She looked, and sure enough, they were. Unfortunately, it wasn't any easier pulling the boots off, than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as, together, they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the correct feet. He then announced, “These aren't my boots.”
She bit her tongue, rather than get right in his face and scream, “Why didn't you say so?” like she wanted to. Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they got the boots off when he said, “They're my brother's boots. But my Mum made me wear 'em today.” Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. But she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots BACK onto his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked, “Now, where are your mittens?” He said “I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots...” She'll be eligible for parole in three years. Hugh Jones, Beerwah

LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Your fifth sector awakes with entertainment and romance! A wonderful start to the month and time to be with loved ones and children. The dramatic actor/actress in you expresses yourself in creative ideas and confidence. You may expect love and popularity in return. The weekend sees Venus in your opposite sign pushing romantic prospects into high gear. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 Hopefully you are a fiction or poetry writer or perhaps an established artist. This weekend is a good time to let your imagination rise to the top of the mountain. Not necessarily a good time for a lawyer or trial as you will need to double check and trust reliable facts. Your preference this weekend is to enjoy the visit of smart new kinds of friends. SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 The high energy of planets arriving to you this week means that suggestions and advice from friends could amount to invitations that put you out on a limb. Best to test their opinions and those of others for validity and accuracy. Venus begins a wonderful aspect to your sign for the next four weeks and that should make you feel very social. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 We all know that you are not one to take chances easily without proper vetting. There are impulses pushing you to some kind of fast change. The first few days of the month start with a jolt and then perhaps move into annoyance and criticisms of others. However, don’t jump the gun, your assessment may be incorrect. Wait till things ease down.

GEMINI May 23 - June 21 Are you aware that with all the publicity these days, the newly elected President of the USA is also a Gemini. For most of this month more than half the planets transit both fire or air signs. You can expect people to be in passionate exchanges, yet intellectual. As with President Trump it will make you persuasive, charming and a good communicator. CANCER June 22 - July 22 You should avoid being stubborn and unfriendly this month and make sure you pay all your debts. This is because planetary energy sees you doing something new and different. There are two main eclipses and you will be particularly affected by them. Mercury in Aquarius, from the 7th, sets off a money pattern with a string of good aspects. LEO July 23 - August 22 Relationships are going to be very prominent this month. With at least seven planets in fire and air, your golden Leo Sun sign shines the spotlight right on you! Great success in team work and understanding where your career is heading. You find others dependable and ready to back you up with action, and not just talking. Your charm amps up! VIRGO August 23 - September 22 By the weekend Venus enters Aries so look out for only a moderate conservative way to get your point across. Otherwise, using an aggressive approach sees a conflict of interest. Possible matters arise depending on descendants and pets. It may be a good time to rethink health, diet and exercise measures now. Things are about to move fast for you.

Week beginning 01/02/17 AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 Under a nice array of various celestial planets this month finds you multi tasking but also rattles a nerve or two! You will find yourself active, confident and out and about with congenial friends. After the weekend Mercury heads into your sign and helps you stretch the borders of your world and success in life. The golden goose arrives at your door! PISCES February 20 - March 20 There is a need to escape from the fray of last month’s hectic lifestyle, to spend more time alone, meditate and be around art and just few close friends. A most satisfactory full Moon next week for your physical wellbeing, meantime this weekend sees Venus entering Aries, enlivening all your relationships, especially relating to financial transactions. ARIES March 21 - April 20 The first week of February sees the Moon in your own sign and then by the weekend it will move into Taurus. Even though you are an independent sign, you will like the fraternal and romantic interaction of the weekend. Venus and Mars in your own assertive sign is a fighting and charming personality and everybody will notice you! TAURUS April 21 - May 22 February should see you avoiding at costs trouble with government officials. Whether it be Centrelink or local councillors you will achieve the greatest success by just being responsible, diplomatic and pursuing your high objectives. The first week has seven planets in both fire or air signs and that tends to throw you off balance at this time.

DENTAL EXCEL - caring for the Hinterland community for over 19 yrs Meet your friendly Dental Assistants and Reception staff Every time you step through the doors at Dental Excel Beerwah you are welcomed with a big smile from the friendly team of ladies that make up the reception and dental assistance team. Susan, Gail, Helen, Karen and Colleen bring over 80 years combined customer care and dental support experience to their roles. While some people may feel a bit nervous about visiting a dentist, the staff at Dental Excel Beerwah are dedicated to making patients feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Empathy, care and compassion (as well as great multi-tasking skills!) are all personal attributes the support ladies share with patients. With such a wealth of experience behind them, the ladies pride themselves on treating everyone who comes through the door ‘like family’; and their professionalism and friendliness is apparent in everything they do. The ladies behind the desk welcome all patients through the door, manage bookings and phone enquiries and coordinate and liaise with other dental providers for referrals when more specialist work is required.
The reception staff also manage general office administration and maintain patient records and referrals when required. Some of the jobs of the dental assistants include helping set up the surgery for the day, sterilising equipment, ensure all external laboratory work has come in and setting up the rooms for each individual patient. Of course a big part of what they do is to assist the dentist during their consultations and help make the patients feel comfortable. Although the practice is busy both welcoming new patients and continuing to offer a high level of care for their established patients – everyone walks in to a smile and leaves with a smile.
