Hi Everyone Well what a spectacular Sunday I had – spending most of the day outside at the Sustainability and Gardening Expo at Beerwah Community Hall and Turner Park at Beerwah. The weather was lovely, and everyone seemed to be relaxed and having a nice time. Rotary served the best beef burgers around (having Oskar and Sue from Pasta D’vine as Rotary Members certainly gave them a pretty good secret weapon at their stall), and the fabulous coffee caravan were there selling real cappuccinos. Mmmm as I read back I notice that for me the highlights didn’t involve buying any plants, and come to think of it, I might just have been the only person who left the event without a bag full of plants. I did however leave with a camera full of photos – and in my world that means mission accomplished.
You can check out the results of my efforts on page 20 (well actually they were Brownie’s efforts) I just held the notepad and wrote down people’s names. I love being the one who writes down the photo captions – mostly because I get to just chat all day, but it is also interesting to find out where people actually came from for the day, one man was from Witta, a couple were from Bribie and another couple were from Kawana and one lady was from Brisbane (oh yeah that was Annette Macfarlane – the special guest on the day). So on behalf of everyone that went along and enjoyed the day, thanks to Bob McLean and all of the Rotary Club members and to everyone involved for creating a really lovely day for locals and visitors alike. Regards,

A feature of the Glasshouse Country Festival is the Bankfoot House Open Day on Sunday, June 5.
ANZ Beerwah.
The Open Day will give local residents and visitors an opportunity to inspect this former Cobb & Co lunch stop and accommodation house dating from the late 1800s. Bankfoot House is a heritage-listed 140 year old residence in which three generations of the same family lived from 1868 to 2004. On the Open Day, volunteers from the Friends of Bankfoot House will be on hand as house guides to explain the history of the building and its contents to visitors. Friends president Ron Gillinder said during the coaching days, Bankfoot House was a busy centre of activity on Gympie Road. “William and Mary Grigor operated a post office, ran their own dairy herd and butcher’s shop and ran a general store to supply the miners on their way to the Gympie goldfields.” On the Open Day there will be guided tours of the house, historic photographs, genealogy advice, pioneer cooking demonstrations and a visit by the Historic Motorcycle Association. The Australian Teamster’s Hall of Fame, across the road from Bankfoot House, will also be open on June 5, and tea and damper will be available. All parking will be in the grounds of the Hall of Fame.

Heading to the show? by Sandra Conte Alan Heading is planning on heading to the Maleny Show again this year as he has since he was a lad. The show which runs over the weekend of June 3 and 4 at the Maleny Showgrounds will see Alan running the ‘Guess the weight of the fat Alan Heading at the Show in 1950, front left, along with steer’ fundraiser Sid Cooke and Ray Cox competition. Alan can be found setting up, manning the stall for the two full days of the entire weekend and cleaning up after the show. According to Alan it is all for the good cause of raising money for the show in which he has been involved in many capacities over the years. With three guesses for $2.00 to ‘Guess the weight of the fat steer’ it’s affordable fun for the whole family. Alan’s run this fat cattle competition for the last 12 years, prior to that he ran the fat cattle section and he has also been involved through Apex and as a Steward. Alan said it all started with showing cattle with his dad and he has been involved ever since – for 60 years in fact. Living in Maleny since he was eight-years-old, as the son of a dairy farmer, Alan is to be congratulated as a local who has contributed to the community in a multitude of ways. This Maleny Show gives you the chance to head over and say thanks to Alan for his terrific community effort... and to guess the weight of the fat steer. At the recent Westpac Business Excellence Awards which were held in conjunction with the Noosa Food and Wine Festival, Jenny and Keith Wellsteed, owners of Candle Mountain Farmstay at Peachester were thrilled to receive the runners up award in the Customer Service Category. “I was on a real high. I was very, very surprised actually,” said Jenny. “I can’t explain how I felt. I didn’t think we’d be in with a chance at all.” Keith and Jenny started their beautiful, modern country Bed and Breakfast Farmstay seven years ago. Guests who stay at their B & B get to enjoy stunning views, homebaking, the macadamia farm, cattle, calves, chooks and more. Giving high quality customer service comes naturally as Jenny and Keith offer good old fashioned country hospitality. “I really do like meeting people. I am quite a social person. I try to make our clients really feel at home. I just want people to enjoy themselves and I think that’s the key,” said Jenny. Keith also enjoys meeting their guests and as he has lived in Peachester since he was 10 months old he has a wealth of knowledge about the area, including its history, which guests are keen to hear all about. Jenny and Keith would like to thank Westpac for their award. “Rosemary and Tracey and the staff there are absolutely fantastic. They know me, they know my name and nothing is a hassle,” said Jenny. Rosemary Lloyd, Manager of Westpac Beerwah, said the Westpac Awards covered three categories: service, community and employee. Nominations were received from every branch for their business customers in the Sunshine Coast area. Rosemary said one of the reasons for Jenny and Keith’s success was the positive feedback from their customers about the B & B. “It’s a beautiful spot and the service that Jenny and Keith provide is just exemplary,” Rosemary said. Other local businesses nominated for the Awards included Yindiartz and Smartlearn Training and Development. Rosemary is looking forward to next year’s event. “We’ll be doing it in conjunction with the Noosa Food and Wine Festival again and I think it’s just a fantastic thing for our customers, to recognise them, and take them out for a night out in Noosa, which was lots of fun.” For more information about Jenny and Keith’s B & B visit www.candlemountainfarmstay.com.au

‘Exploring Glasshouse Country’, a Beerwah Grafx Group Pinnacle DVD Project promoting the Glasshouse Country Area, is finally burnt to disc. It is with both excitement and relief that it is finished after 12 months planning, research, photography, videoing, and editing, etc. The small group of Pinnacle devotees, led by Peter Roeland, are proud of this pictorial presentation promoting the areas of Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Peachester, Landsborough and Mooloolah. Tried everything and you still have painful feet? Stepping out podiatry talks about mobilisation and manipulation therapy There are 26 bones in each foot and over time, the more we use our feet, the more likely it is that these bones shift from their original position in the foot and stop working effectively – causing discomfort. If the joints in your feet have been functioning incorrectly over many years the ligaments between the bones in a joint will shorten, causing the foot to stiffen. Mobilisation and manipulation is about freeing up the bands of tissue that become tight between the joints which make our feet stiff and painful. To create a better foot position and reduce pain levels, the flexibility of the ligaments and bands of tissue between joints needs to be restored – or stretched. We call this stretching program for your feet mobilisation, and we call achieving a better bone alignment, manipulation. This physical therapy is called manipulation and mobilisation and is offered as a part of the wide range of treatment options that we offer at Stepping Out Podiatry. The treatment can be particularly beneficial for people who suffer with heel pain, achilles pain, high arched feet, arch pain, forefoot pain and bunions. Podiatrists at Stepping Out Podiatry also use this treatment in conjunction with orthotic therapy, strapping and footwear changes. This physical therapy is painless, cost effective, and after an initial assessment (which includes a trial mobilisation/ manipulation to see if the treatment will work on your foot type) only a quick appointment is necessary to follow through with mobilisation treatment – so it's also time effective for busy working people! Stepping Out Podiatry has three locations around the Hinterland for your convenience, so phone 1300 881 082 to make an appointment today for pain free feet tomorrow.
Making a difference At just 19, Elly Westaway, from Glass House Mountains has already learnt that it’s possible to make a difference in this world. She has just returned from a three month Internship with Falling Whistles at Los Angeles, a non-profit organisation dedicated to a campaign for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Elly first heard about Falling Whistles about seven months ago. “I went to their website and was immediately affected. I felt this great sense of urgency about it,” she said. “Mainly because of the fact that it was so impactful and I had never heard that there was a war in Congo. I had never been educated on the matter in school, in my personal life, or by the news - it just never came up. The war and the conflict over there has been going on longer than I’ve been alive. To find out something like that, that nobody talks about….made me feel like I needed to do something,” said Elly.
Elly Westaway
To become an intern, Elly had to complete a lengthy on-line application with what she says were “interesting and thought provoking questions”, include a resume, and undergo a Skype interview. Elly became the first person from Australia or from anywhere outside of North America to be given an Internship. “It felt pretty special. It was such an amazing opportunity. I didn’t in my wildest dreams think I’d get it,” she said. During her time there Elly was the Social Media Intern. “So basically I handled all things social media – twitter, facebook, anything online, like researching campaigns. It went from me being an Intern to them putting social media into my hands,” she said. Recently Falling Whistles launched a campaign asking the US Government to appoint a special envoy to the Congo to support free and fair elections. “We got 35 congressman to write President Obama a letter and we got 16 senate members that got a letter on his desk last Tuesday,” said Elly. Elly said what she enjoyed most about her time as an Intern was meeting everyone that was involved in the organisation. “It was being amongst a group of young people that didn’t have all the answers and started this organisation two years ago. They’ve just continued to work and work and work towards a greater goal, which is peace in Congo.” Now that she is home Elly will continue to be involved with Falling Whistles, advocating as much as possible in Australia, but she also has another goal – giving the following message to other young people whenever she can. “Young people can do whatever they want in terms of achieving their dreams and their goals, nothing’s impossible,” she said. For more information about Falling Whistles visit www.fallingwhistles.com

Last week Beerwah lost a golfing legend Last week Val Shaw, wife to Bill Shaw, who made Beerwah their home over 50 years ago passed away at the age of 84. Val was a keen golfer until the very end and was recently selected by the Beerwah Golf Club as the inaugural ‘Legend of Beerwah Golf’. In the early days when the Shaw family was settling into the area, Val and Bill played tennis and were active members of the Lions Club, then, in November 1968, they attended a meeting to discuss the formation of a golf club in Beerwah, and thus began Val’s true sporting passion. The Shaw’s became foundation members of the club and despite having six children to raise and helping Bill on the farm, Val still volunteered on the first ladies’ committee. Together they helped make the golf club what it
is today. Val played her final game on the day she died, playing with her great golfing buddy, Joan Harvey, apparently playing like the champion she was, driving the ball straight up the fairway and sinking putts from anywhere. In her daughter Jenny’s words her mum wasn’t just a great golfer, she was a mean card player, an avid reader, she loved swimming in the surf and fishing on the rocks and was a passionate supporter of the Broncos. She was a snappy dresser and a great sewer and over the years made most of the clothes for her six children as well as making many amazing costumes for her six children for the annual Fancy Dress Ball at Beerwah State School. Jenny said friends were important to Val, but family was everything. “She was the rock of our

On the road again… They call themselves the Antique Angels and while whether they are antique is debatable, locals Colleen Clifford, Tricia Back and Jenny Malcolm from WA are most definitely angels. They are getting ready to embark on the 2011 Great Endeavor Rally, the fifth time they have participated in this fundraising event. The girls will leave on July 12, once again travelling in their distinctive 1998 Subaru Forester All Wheel Drive. The 4000km journey leaves Goondiwindi and finishes at the Gold Coast, travelling via the Golden West and visiting places such as Dunkeld, Charleville and Miles. Doing the rally again this year was an easy decision. “It’s the real camaraderie,” said Colleen. “The chance to get together with like-minded people, raise money for a good organisation, and just have a bit of time out from your normal life and a bit of fun as well.” Colleen said the experience gained from previous rally events helps. “The road’s a dangerous place so you’ve got to take it seriously but you also learn to let your hair down at the end of the day and just enjoy being with other people,” she said.
family and life will be hard without her but it is part of her legacy that she leaves behind a strong and loving family. Her children, grandchildren and great grand children are all a product of her great capacity to love and cherish her family,” said Jenny.

Antique Angels Colleen, Tricia and Jenny The Antique Angels have already commenced fundraising. They held a Rock and Roll event last September which provided over $2,000 towards their entry fee, all of which goes to Endeavour, Australia’s largest non-government provider of services for people with a disability. Right now the girls are running a raffle to win two tickets to see Dr Zhivargo at the Lyric Theatre, on Sunday, July 24 at 3.00pm. This prize was kindly donated by Glasshouse Country Care. The $5.00 raffle tickets will be sold at Beerwah Marketplace on Saturday, June 4 and June 11, or by phoning Colleen on 5496 9194 or 0438 136 288 or Tricia on 5493 0030 or 0424 669 960. “We’d like to thank people for supporting us in the past and it would be lovely if they were willing to support us again this year,” Colleen said.

“My children are grownup and they don’t appreciate hand knitted items anymore, so I thought I’d find somebody who did,” Kate said. “When you personally hand them out or personally meet somebody such as the Homeless Connect day which the Brisbane City Council ran last week, that’s when it really comes home to you how appreciative and grateful people are that somebody is actually willing to help them. “Every little bit helps, and the fact that people know there are people out there that care about them, is in some ways almost as beneficial as the actual practical item in their hand,” she said. As well as knitting, Kate has helped set up an on-line website to sell some of their handcrafted items to raise funds to purchase more yarn so members can continue to knit items for the needy. “We receive no funding whatsoever, that’s why I started the Etsy Shop, an on-line community of people who sell their handcrafted items. We are always looking for ways to source more yarn and in order to source yarn you need money. So we were looking for ways that we could fundraise that was still in keeping with what the group is all about which is handcrafted, made with love, and personal,” she said. Even if you don’t knit they are other ways you can help, such as if anyone has a secure storage unit they would love to hear from you. If you would like more information or would like to visit the etsy shop visit www.etsy.com/shop/K4BNFundRaiser and www.knittingforbrisbanesneedy.com

The group was founded in January 2006 by Glass House Mountains resident Karen Croke and it now has over 320 on-line members and 100 other members who don’t have access to computers. Fellow Glass House Mountains resident, Kate White, joined the group in 2007. Since then she has knitted around 100 items ranging from toys, adult jumpers, blankets, gloves, scarves and more. The entire group has knitted around 80,000 items. Kate decided to join because she wanted an outlet for her craft while at the same time being able to help those that need a bit of assistance.

Principal Anton Prinsloo and P&F President Joline Lalime-Bauer finalise questions for the St Paul’s Trivia Night
Ever watched a TV quiz show and known the answers before the contestant? Then you might like to test your skills at the St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School Trivia Night on June 18. This event is open to all members of the community, not just people in the St Paul’s family. St Paul’s is extremely fortunate to engage the experience of Andre Grimaux, editor of the Caboolture Shire News, to be the Master of Ceremonies on the evening. Mr Grimaux has been MC at a variety of Awards Nights over the past few years, and as a keen follower of basketball, has MC’d State League basketball games and ceremonies. He also MC’d all the games for the Caboolture Sun’s last season.
COOKING SCHOOL
Home Style Thai Cooking (the real thing)
“These often required me to speak for three to four hours,” he said, “so MC-ing the St Paul’s Trivia Night should be no problem. I’ve never done a Trivia Night before, but I might be good at the Sports questions!” The evening will begin at 6.00pm, with questions from 6.30pm, and prizes will include a lucky door prize and a winning team prize. Tickets are $10.00 per head. More information is available from the school on 5495 5899.
Learn the tricks and secrets that make all the difference from a real Thai cook. Recipes that Thai cook for themselves, passed down from mother to daughter, now available to you.

Ever wanted to get into scrapbooking and don’t know how? The friendly staff at Joy Muscillo and the friendly staff at Joybells Joybells Scrapbooking Scrapbooking in Landsborough stock supplies for scrapbooking and card making, and Joy holds weekly classes in both crafts. Joy said her staff members are all knowledgeable in the crafts and are happy to help scrapbookers (or papercrafters, as Joy calls them) improve their skills or help with whatever problem they have. Papercraft supplies in every shape and colour, buttons, ribbons and lots more, plus all the tools of the trade, are available at Joybells. “Butterflies and birds which are plentiful at Joybells are ‘popping up’ everywhere in the papercraft industry at the moment,” she said. You’ll also find paper flowers, 3D shapes and lots of other decorative items all in store. There are also ribbons made of organza, tinsel, ric-ric, satin and lace, and buttons of all colours. Tools include paper trimmers, double sided tape, 3D foam tape, sharp scissors, awls (pokey-hole-tools), craft mats to work on (so you don’t ruin your table), corner rounders, circle cutters, sewing needles and thread, and stamps and acrylic blocks and inks. Joy said she loves pink and all things shabby-chic. But you will find plenty of other colours in her store, too. “We will always try to order or source products requested by customers,” Joy said, "if they are not already on the shelves". Joy opened her business in April last year and recently celebrated the shop’s first birthday with excitement and plenty of goodies. Cellebrating the stores first year of business meant a lot to Joy. “It is really great to have turned my dream of the business into a reality and to now be seeing how happy our customers are with what we are offering,” she said. Joybells Scrapbooking is open from Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 4.45pm and on Saturdays from 9.00am to 12.00noon. For more information ring 5494 8498 or send an email to info@joybellsscrapbooking.com.au or go to the website www.joybellsscrapbooking.com.au, where Joy writes a weekly blog. You Said It
A very big thank you
To everyone who came to the Biggest Morning Tea with a difference at Beerwah Active Physio – on Thursday afternoon! The Cent Auction was a great success and together with the afternoon tea we raised a fantastic $410.00 for the Cancer Council. We would also like to thank all the local businesses and individuals who kindly donated food and prizes. It was lovely to see so many people who were willing to give up their afternoon for such a worthy cause, and we look forward to seeing you again next year!
Caloundra South - what next?
As promised in my previous call for community involvement, I have put in a submission on the Caloundra South Proposed Development Scheme. Interestingly the most common local reaction I got to the ‘Caloundra South’ development was a question: ‘Do you really think it will go ahead?’ Locals think that the market is edging towards oversupply not undersupply, secondly, they’re skeptical because of general global uncertainty heightened by flip flopping state vs. local politics and finally, we remain unconvinced about developing so much on such a wet site. This needed a team approach, so I focused on social and economic aspects rather than the environmental but I made a point of attending meetings with our regions dedicated environment organisations in addition to the Urban Land Development Authority. After further discussions with local friends and neighbours, I prepared an eight point, detailed submission. Here are two examples that most related to the Glasshouse Country area: • I objected to the lack of consideration and detail in regard to the potential impacts on neighbouring communities such as the major transport impacts on Beerwah and Landsborough • I objected to the lack of ongoing community consultation and recommended the establishment of a community reference group primarily made up of stakeholders from neighbouring townships; and • I also made several recommendations such as a unifying vision for the project based on a real commitment to the 320ha environmental rehabilitation program. It’s remarkable to think that’s it! We’ve had the only required opportunity to have our say on a 20,000 dwelling development in our division. Finally, I would like to congratulate others that put together submissions such as our Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network. The Urban Development Authority will now consider our submissions and announce a final development scheme before the end of the year. Or will they? Peachester History Committee
Peachester Cemetery on Kero Lantern Trail
Local and family historians love an opportunity to visit a cemetery, so the Peachester Cemetery is included on the Kero Lantern Heritage Trail, a recommended activity for Sunday, June 5 during the Glasshouse Country Festival. For such a small cemetery, a surprising number of visitors come to pay respects to their ancestors. The names on many of the headstones are a reminder of the early families who pioneered the district – names like Breton, Butler, Dwyer, Grigor, Hume, Page, Shuttlewood and Vieritz. It is also the last resting place of famous longrange weather forecaster Inigo Jones, together with his parents and other family members. The headstones have many stories to tell, especially from the early years of settlement, when life was frequently shortened by accidents or the distance from medical assistance. One of the oldest graves is that of Samuel Tomlinson, whose death was the result of a tragic accident. The Brisbane Courier reported on July 7, 1906: FATAL ACCIDENT. 'A fatal accident occurred at Peachester on Tuesday (writes our correspondent). A settler named Tomlinson, accompanied by his son, aged about 13 years, was bringing half-a-ton of galvanised iron from the station, and when in front of the School of Arts one of the wheels passed over a stump, and the dray overturned pinning Tomlinson to the ground. The lad was caught by one foot, and was cooped up in the body of the dray. He cried for assistance, but a considerable period elapsed before his cries attracted attention, as they were mistaken for the ordinary calls of children driving cows. In the mean-time the struggling horses kicked the prostrate man on the head, and when help did arrive, life was quite extinct. The boy was uninjured except for a bruise on the ankle. Tomlinson leaves a widow and six children. The funeral took place on Thursday. The road at the scene of the accident is said to consist of a number of rough tracks between the trees, no attempt having ever been made to clear or form a road.' Some years ago the Peachester History Committee initiated a memorial project making use of a new rock retaining wall. Families have been encouraged to provide memorial plaques commemorating forebears who are buried elsewhere, as well as armed services personnel who enlisted from this area; and many interesting plaques are now in place on the wall. Members of the Peachester History Committee will be available at the cemetery on Sunday, June 5 from 10.00am, to answer questions and tell some of the stories. For more information contact Helen Page, phone 5494 9557.

The Health Equation
As a health practitioner, I often hear people say ‘my friend Sally is so lucky; she never gets sick or suffers from pain like I do’. The truth about this statement is that there are some ‘lucky’ people out there who are always healthy and free from pain. The false part of that statement is luck has very little to do with their state of wellbeing. If you plant a flower in nutrient rich soil, give it plenty of water and sunlight, and keep it away from any poisons, will that flower grow into a beautiful vibrant flower? Of course! Does luck have anything to do with that? Absolutely not! Biologically speaking, human beings aren’t much different from flowers or any other plant or animal for that matter. If you give a person good nutrition, proper exercise, a healthy emotional environment, and avoid toxins...what will you get? A healthy person who rarely gets sick or suffers from pain. That’s not luck, that’s just the health equation. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, where unfortunate unavoidable events cause people sickness or ill health. However,
Glasshouse Country Dog Wash
Warm water hydrobath, Ears, eyes & nails,
these are exceptions, not the rule. Eighty per cent of Australians are dying early deaths due to chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease! Eighty per cent! Can we really blame bad luck for our current state of health and well-being? Or is it more sensible to think that our poor lifestyle choices are resulting in poor health? As soon as we accept the idea that our health has very little to do with luck, we can gain the opportunity to begin improving our health and well-being. While this approach to health leaves no room for blame, it is incredibly empowering to know that you have control over your health and well being. You get to decide if your future holds health, happiness, and vitality... or sickness, disease and an early death. The equation is simple. Good lifestyle choices = Abundant Health. Poor lifestyle choices = Sickness and Disease. As a side note, the purpose of my monthly Maximised Living Workshops is to educate and encourage healthy living. This a free service to the community for people interested in making healthier lifestyle choices. Our next one is Saturday, June 4 at 11.00am in the Beerwah Library addressing ‘Common Toxins that rob your Health.’

Attention all artists Would you like to paint a picture of your pet? Yes? Well, this is a great opportunity to learn just how. A very special guest demonstrator for June 14 is Maxine Thompson who is not only from New Zealand but an extremely accomplished Master Pastellist. She is demonstrating the painting of animals and Maxine has also offered to do a 10 minute painting of a dog at the end of the evening and auction it off to the highest bidder on the night. All funds raised will support the Pastel Society to further assist artists. The Pastel Society of Australia’s Sunshine Coast group, which was formed late in 2010, continues to support artists in the Sunshine Coast area with monthly Master Pastellist demonstrations at the Sunshine Coast Art Rooms, Syd Lingyard Drive, in Buderim. Meetings commence at 7.00pm but arrive early for a cuppa and some meet and greet time. Artists are invited to bring a show and tell painting for display as well, if it is not framed, that’s quite OK. Demonstration meeting cost is $10.00 for non PSA members, $5.00 for current PSA members.

Youth leadership forum
Caloundra South must provide jobs
Nominations are now open for the 14th Annual National Student Leadership Forum on ‘Faith and Values’ to be held in Canberra from September 15 - 18. The event is hosted by 42 members and senators of the Australian Parliament, including myself, and aims to prepare young adults for leadership roles in all aspects of Australian life. Nominations are open to people aged between 18 and 26, with leadership potential or already in a leadership role, and interested in how values and personal faith create foundations for effective leadership. Nominations can be made at www.nslf.org.au
Submissions have now closed for those wanting to make comment on the Concept Plan released by the ULDA in regard to Caloundra South. There has been much written about the impact of this development concerning the environment, infrastructure, affordable housing and planning issues. I want to raise the question of the economic benefit that must derive from this site. Most people will agree that change is inevitable, but add the caveat, change must happen so as to provide, in this case, an economic benefit to the Hinterland. For years we have heard the Coast is linked to tourism, construction and retail. Caloundra South must offer an alternate to that. Caloundra South, as it is a planned community, must provide more than row upon row of houses, shops and small business premises. I recently was at Landsborough Railway station at about 6.30am and saw car after car park in the railway car park and surrounding area and then travel to Brisbane for work. Then for the rest of the day there is no parking for the local businesses. If the plan to develop Caloundra South does not include as one of its primary objectives, an economic return to the Coast, I can see more cars travelling to the Hinterland, more cars parked all day and more people commuting to and from Brisbane on a daily basis. Someone will have to explain to me how that economically benefits the Hinterland. Economically someone will have to explain to me that Caloundra South becoming the northern most suburb of Brisbane adding volumes of cars to the Bruce Highway and congestion on our train lines, helps the Hinterland. I recently advocated strongly that the Sunshine Coast University Hospital is an economic driver of enormous proportions. There needs to be a plan to link in some manner, Caloundra South directly and indirectly to that economic powerhouse. This is an opportunity that we cannot allow to pass us by. The planning in relation to Caloundra South cannot simply be one large residential area, it must be much more than that and must reflect the potential for the Coast as a whole over the next 20 to 30 years.
Seniors’ Forum
The annual Sunshine Coast Seniors Forum will be held again this year in late July. This is the 11th annual Seniors Forum, and will again include various expert speakers – including Shadow Minister for Seniors, Bronwyn Bishop - and displays from around 30 organisations that assist seniors in the community. To RSVP for the event or for further details please contact my office on 5444 4888.
Community Grants
I encourage community groups, including sporting groups, to apply for funds under the ‘Volunteer Grants 2011’ programme. Local community organisations can apply for a grant of between $1,000.00 and $5,000.00 to help purchase a variety of equipment to assist the work of volunteers. Funds are available to purchase equipment, cover the cost of petrol, provide training courses and undertake background checks. Volunteer groups often struggle with raffles and pie drives to raise money, and this scheme offers an opportunity to secure much-needed funds through a government programme. I urge volunteer community groups, sporting clubs, as well as school P&Cs and the like, to set aside some time as soon as possible to prepare a funding application. Further information on the ‘Volunteer Grants 2011’ programme and an online application form can be found at http://www.fahcsia.gov.au/sa/volunteers/progserv/Pages/ VolunteerGrants.aspx Organisations can also request paper-based application forms by calling 1800 183 374 or by emailing vg2011@fahcsia.gov.au Applications close at 5.00pm on Wednesday, June 8.

IMPROVE YOUR BORROWING CAPACITY Since the mid 90s Australian mortgage providers have been operating under wellconstructed regulatory guidelines designed to encourage responsible lending. Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser Teresa Harrison says one of the most successful aspects of these guidelines has been the Ability to Repay Test, which is commonly referred to as serviceability. “Put simply, financial institutions must demonstrate they are satisfied that
www.gcnews.com.au
borrowers can afford to repay their debt,” Teresa explains. “If lenders don’t do this, they risk their right to foreclose on a client in the event of default.” “Lenders interpret the Ability to Repay Test in different ways and contrary to popular opinion, the loan amounts lenders deem to be responsible also differ greatly.” “In fact, a recent enquiry determined – from a range of 25 mortgage lenders – that a single borrower on a gross
annual salary of $60,000 and a credit card liability of $5000 was able to borrow approximately $277,000 with the most frugal lender and approximately $372,000 with the most expansive lender.” “This demonstrates the range within which lenders interpret a borrower’s ability to repay – and that it pays to shop around.” Ms Harrison says in response to the GFC lenders have progressively tightened their Ability to Repay Calculations.
“These changes certainly don’t mean that securing the right loan for your needs is an insurmountable task, but it is certainly a lot more challenging and timeconsuming to wade through the policies, loan types, rates and lenders on offer,” she said. “At these times, the advice and guidance of an experienced mortgage adviser can be invaluable.”

Everything in life has two sides As each coin has two sides, so does everything else, even though we might go through life and only see the one side. There is white and black, positive and negative, good and bad, Yin and Yang, day and night; you get the point! tourist operators close to the brink of bankruptcy. The whole situation is lopsided and this has a direct influence on consumer behaviour, on business confidence, on home buyers sitting on the fence waiting for “who knows what” and also on home sellers waiting for price increases which might or most likely might not come. Here is the good news: you can teach yourself to be positive. Start each day by saying “enough negativity, from now on I will be pro-active, I will be positive; I will talk positive and act positive and then do it! You will see, suddenly your friends and family will notice that
you have less stress, less anxiety, less negative vibes and they also will react positively. It’s a chain reaction, one starts and the others follow. Garden Expo does it again
T is for Tacca ‘Twas a clear and balmy night, in a damp, secluded corner of the garden. Silver moonlight shimmered brightly from the whiskers of an eerie creature. It appeared to have black wings from which purple balls were hanging. I hesitated, unsure whether this creature would attack or not. I reached for my trusty plant encyclopedia and discovered it was, in fact, a Black Bat Plant (Tacca chantierei) and unlikely to pounce, although it is one of the most peculiar and spectacular flowering plants. The genus, Tacca, contains ten species which can naturally be found in Africa and South East Asia and are most commonly known for their ornamental value, with the Black Bat Plant and the White Bat Plant (T. integrifolia) being the most popular. All Bat Plants prefer damp but well drained soil, so combinations of a light coarse material such as perlite or fine pine bark blended with compost or peat and river sand are ideal. Humidity is also important. Protect from wind by growing in a courtyard, shade house or surrounded by other plants. Open verandas and dry atriums will stunt their growth. Reduce watering during the cooler months while the plant goes into hibernation. Propagation by seed can be achieved in about three months provided the mix is kept moist and warm. Use seeds from capsules which have matured on the plant. The rhizome of larger plants can be divided in spring. Snails and slugs are the main pests of the Bat Plant and occasionally the leaves can develop a fungal problem. Test any fungicide on a single leaf before treating the whole plant to avoid burning the whole plant. As Tacca do not make great cut flowers, grow them in pots and move them to a prominent location while in bloom. Bat Plants require particular conditions for healthy growth, but if provided with these conditions, will reward you with flowers which will amaze you and any visitors to your garden.

The Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Expo has once again proved popular with locals and visitors alike, with over 1500 people pouring through the gates last Sunday. The range of quality plants for sale and products on show really does show what a productive and creative lot we are here in Glasshouse Country. And with showcasing sustainable living now being an outstanding part of the annual expo, it all bodes well for a greener, more liveable region. Special guest Annette MacFarlane kept a large crowd enthralled with her knowledge and her stories. Expo Coordinator Bob McLean was very upbeat – although a little tired looking – by the end of the day. “The weather held off and people once again supported a local event which is all about them. “And thanks to the great support of local sponsors, businesses and community groups, the expo ran smoothly,” said Bob. The expo is part of the Glasshouse Country Festival which runs until June 9. Details of all the events can be found at www. glasshousecountryfestival.com.au

the time to mulch before the nasty westerly winds dries the ground out. Gather old carpet pieces and place them on top of the dirt then cover with mulch. • The cupboards are bursting with clothing you don’t use. Bundle them up and bring them to the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre on Roberts Road and place them in the orange bins. These items are all recycled, even if they are stained. Don’t forget to put in the old linen as well. Warm clothing and rugs are much needed in winter. • Worm farms and compost. A compost and Worm Farm Workshop will be held at the Beerwah site on Saturday, June 4, 9.30am – 11.30am, morning tea provided and prizes! To find out more call 5494 6798. Don’t forget to feed the worms and maintain the compost. A customer came into the site with a container of what looked like grubs. After consultation we were able to inform them that it appeared meat items had been added into the compost. Meat, dairy, onions and citrus should not be added to the compost. • Why not make wind breaks in your garden with unused items from around the home? Bed frames make a great garden feature, stand them up or on the side, support them with stays, thread them with lengths of sticks or palm leaves and when the leaves go brown they look great. They’ll stop the winter winds and you can remove them in summer. • IMPORTANT NEWS! Don’t forget to check out the program you received in last week’s Glasshouse Country News and mark on the calendar the activities you are going to attend. The Festival runs from May 29 until June 11 and don’t forget to book online for your steam train ride. Come up and take a look around our recycled garden. We get many visitors from individuals and groups, even gardening groups. See you here some time. Call and book first 5494 6798.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Pastor Rodney Jobe Church on the Rise N.J. Stowell was an American scientist. Together with other scientists he worked for many years to bring clarity to the hidden secrets of atomic science. He was a cynical atheist and wanted to examine what occurs in the brain while passing from life to death. They placed an instrument in the room of a woman who was dying from brain cancer. The indicator could move 500 degrees in both positive and negative fields. They had previously tested a broadcasting station producing 50 kilowatts and received a reading of nine degrees positive. In the last moments of the dying woman’s life she began to pray to God. She asked God to forgive all those who had wronged her and then she thanked God for His strength and provision during her life. N. J. Stowell was moved by the experience and noticed that the instrument read 500 degrees

to the positive. He was astounded that a dying woman in contact with God could produce a power 55 times stronger than a radio station. Prayer has a powerful energy in our lives. Next they chose a mentally disturbed man. When the man was irritated he reacted with insults, swearing and blasphemed God. Stowell was shocked to find the instrument indicator was showing 500 degrees in the negative. They had through this scientific experiment shown the positive power of prayer and the negative power of evil. At that moment Stowells atheistic philosophy of life began to crumble and he became a believer in Jesus Christ. This story tells us that prayer has an amazing power to it and that we ought to never doubt that God hears us when we pray. It also reveals the negative power of evil. The bible says that 'we ought to bless and not curse'. I pray you will know the positive power of prayer in your life to God who hears us, and helps us in our time of need.

This week we had a fine weekend end with all games played. Our 2nd Division women lost to Woombye in the final minutes of the game which drops them out of the top 4. Our senior men’s teams struggled with Caloundra at Caloundra going down to a very strong combination. Our 17’s are still performing well with a loss and a draw on the weekend. Our under 13’s played two games on the weekend going down in both but the boys showed heaps of courage and character in both games. Last week our under 14 Div 1 boys had a good win against Noosa winning 7-3 all the players had an outstanding game. Local Sisters, Cassie and Tegan Buhmann, have been invited by the Australian Professional Fooball Academy, to tour England and Scotland for 12 days of football-playing against top teams from Rangers, Hibernian, Manchester City,

The Seniors travelled to Caboolture on Sunday looking to continue their recent good form against the Snakes. Under 18’s were a little down on troops and found the Home Team a little too good on the day going down 24-12. Reserve Grade came up against the leading team in the competition and let them skip away to an early lead in the 1st half and then more than held their own in the 2nd half to go down 38-13 but should take a lot of confidence out of the game. A Grade came up against a Fired up Caboolture outfit and could not match the Speedy and Skilful Snakes who played a very up tempo game to record a 38-0 victory and the Bulldogs now have a week to lick their wounds and prepare for the Bribie Warrigals at Home next Sunday. A-Grade Caboolture Snakes – 38 – (Jake Carl 2, Rowan Simpson 1, Nathan Morris 1, Steve Tyler 1, Mark Elemani 2 – Tries)(Dale Shegog 5 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 0 – (Nil – Tries)(Nil – Goals). Reserve Grade Caboolture Snakes – 38 – (Nathan Thompson 1, Chris Garthe 1, Michael Vetta 2, Justin Whiting 1, Michael Crowe 1, Steve Sheppard 1 – Tries)( Michael Crowe 5 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 13 – (Nat Flores 1, Gary Atkinson 1 – Tries) (Mitch Jackson 2 – Goals)(Gary Atkinson 1 – Field Goals). Under 18 Caboolture Snakes – 24 (Jesse Harris 2, Clifton Law 1, Andrew Jenkins 1, Adam Otter 1 – Tries) (Sean Brooks 2 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 12 – (Kane Mahoney 1, Jake Parkinson 1 – Tries) (Cody O’Donnell 1, Michael Cronk 1 – Goals). The Seniors’ next game is against Bribie Island at Beerwah on Sunday June 5 which should be another good quality game and look forward to seeing all the Bulldogs Supporters come along and offer their support. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Love relationships can be quite prominent now. A new love can begin or an old love can come back into your life. Try not to set too high a standards, there is no such thing as a perfect person, everyone has some faults. A holiday may now be in the making which can work out well. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Making new friends and starting a new lifestyle and social group can bring some very important people into your life. Money may seem to come and go very quickly. Problems with a car could put some pressure on your budget. A problem connected with a child will need to be sorted out. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 You may be inclined to rush into everything, so take your time with important decisions. Also with your driving. You’ll also need to be tactful dealing with authority figures. A promotion is possible. Pressure can be put on you, but by taking it easy you can succeed. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This is not a good time to take things to heart. You may feel quite sensitive and a bit rejected. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 You will be focusing on private concerns at this period. Socialising may take a back seat as there may be an unfinished task that needs completing. You can also be more sensitive than at other periods. This is a very important time for soul searching and to devote more time to yourself. Renovating the home or a move is possible. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Deep transformation can be taking place. Your home, your career and your self worth can be challenged. This is a time of soul searching and having the faith that you will succeed in what you really want out of life. Watch that you don’t overspend on luxury items. Some changes can occur with a close relationship. LEO July 23 – August 22 This is a very important time for you to keep focused on what you want and where you are going. Things should go pretty well your way. You may feel a need to take things at a quicker pace, if this is so, slow down, rushing will get you nowhere. A change of car is possible. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Restrictions around your work and relationships could get you down at times. This is a time when you will need to keep centred and positive about your life. New opportunities are on their way. A new love can come into your life. Changes in the home are possible. A problem with a family member will be sorted out.

“I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.” The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. “$10.00,” the guy says. “$10.00? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?” “Because he’s a liar. He never did any of that stuff.” Submitted by Howard Fox, Glass House Mountains

A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shantystyle house: 'Talking Dog For Sale'. He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking labrador retriever sitting there. “You talk?” he asks. “Yep,” the Lab replies. After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says “so, what’s your story?” The Lab looks up and says, “well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.
