Hi Everyone...
on the Cover
So much happens each ANZAC Day in our Glasshouse Country and Maleny communities and each year, with more and more locals participating in these events, it becomes more challenging to decide what to include in the coverage off this important day. This year I attended the Landsborough dawn service and gunfire breakfast at the Landsborough Community Hall, while Brownie went to the Beerwah dawn service held inside the community hall as Turner Park was too wet to use. We followed this up by attending the 6am dawn service at Glass House together. While at each of the services there are different poems read, hymns sung and prayers shared. Essentially it is the consistency of the purpose for those that attend that I always feel our photos really can’t capture. I enjoy arriving early and seeing the crowd build, seeing the sleepy little kids rugged up in their beanies and jumpers being carried by parents or pushed in prams, the people walking with their dogs on leads, and seeing the quiet greetings between friends and neighbours. Standing alone in the dark, respectfully waiting for the RSL members to get the service under way, always makes we feel fortunate to live in a community that values this shared experience and the importance of continuing the tradition and making sure we never forget. Regards, WWII Veteran Arthur Giblin with his grandson Jake Giblin–Webb wearing Arthur’s father’s WWI medals at the Beerwah Cenotaph. See story and ANZAC Day coverage on page 32-34

Australia Zoo tourism project to create jobs
The State Government will partner with Australia Zoo to create an $8 million wildlife camping experience to be called Camp Croc Hunter. Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the project would provide a 108-site camping ground designed to provide the full range of camping experiences. “We’re talking about tent accommodation to caravan and RV powered sites to glamping-style tents and eco cabins,” she said. It will also include a café, reception, entertainment and pool area, caretaker quarters and workshop, amenities blocks, covered cooking areas, school camp facilities and a mountain bike pump track. Australia Zoo expects the project will support up to 33 construction jobs and 43 operational jobs. It will also have a flow-on effect to boost the local tourism industry.

Rounding out the field of seven candidates in the federal election for the seat of Fisher is Mike Jessop. Mr Jessop has run in state and federal elections since 2009 but this time he has aligned himself with the newly created Conservative National Party formed by the controversial senator Fraser Anning. “I am very keen to make a difference to so-called small business, which is the backbone of the economy,” Mr Jessop said. “As a businessman, I am extremely passionate about implementing better ways to support and grow small business. “I have been described as a larger than life character and an extremely passionate innovative man with a gift for communication supported by an exceptionally high IQ who loves caramel cheese cake and cream [and have] a blended English/Australian accent. “I was privileged to work for IBM in computer design when they were bringing out their first IBM PC. “Years later in 1998, in my own business, we were the first ever, before the cellular networks, to do voice data and video over a smartphone — although our iPhone was a hand-held PC. “I reside in Caloundra and remain passionate about supporting my beloved Caloundra Rugby Union Club and getting elected into parliament in 2019.”
Being around boats for most of his life, boating is in Mr Jessop’s blood. “My Dad was a submariner in the Royal Navy and was captain of the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Eagle. This meant that we spent time travelling with Dad around the world as part of his tours of duty. I was actually born in Manly in New South Wales,” he said. “After attending boarding school from the age of eight in England and graduating from Portsmouth University in Southern England with a degree in business with computers, I then went on to study a postgraduate degree in microprocessor design. “After IBM, I later operated an electronic business producing high-tech computer components across the world. There is no secret to success - it is hard work and determination. “In my spare time I love to sing in a number of local choirs – I always sing at the Christmas carols – I play a number of musical instruments and I love to get onto the water with my family and free dive and spearfish when I get a chance.”

Peachester park thrown a lifeline By Greg Brown A wave of relief swept over the Peachester community at Easter when the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, Dr Mark Lynham, gave the locals something else to celebrate. Dr Lynham announced he had postponed the sale of the High Street land that the community wants to become a public park. The auction was to be held on May 18, but the Minister has now given Sunshine Coast Council time to negotiate with his department, which could preserve the space for future generations. Dr Lynham told GC&M News that in response to community feedback, he had instructed the department to defer the proposed sale of the freehold property in Peachester. “Instead I have asked my department to liaise with the Sunshine Coast Council so that we might be able to reach an agreement on future use of the land,” he said. Although not the perfect outcome, the Peachester community is gearing up for the next stage of its campaign. On Good Friday, more than 50 people met for a community information session where local Sally Joyce said accessible nature play spaces were vital for the growth of healthy communities and healthy children. “And that is exactly what High Street is,” Ms Joyce said. “We are thankful that the Minister, [local Member for Glass House] Andrew Powell and Cr Rick
Baberowski have listened to the community thus far. “It would be futile for the community and the Minister to give up on our children’s rights to a place to play at this stage when there is a beautiful space waiting to be played in already in the heart of our little village. “We don’t want or need an expensive Aura type park as the space is perfect as is. “However, some toilets and table amenities would make life a little more comfortable. “Peachester has been very patient but our patience has worn thin and our momentum is growing very quickly,” said Ms Joyce, flagging their resolve to keep up the fight. To focus the drive for a new park, a community meeting will be held at the Peachester Hall on Friday, May 10 starting at 6.30pm. Head along if you would like to learn more or contribute to what the community park might include. The meeting will be followed by a free screening of ‘The Neighbourhood Play Project’, a documentary about how the health of a nation can be measured by the health of the children in
the neighbourhood. All members of the community are urged to watch this timely documentary about what it takes to maintain a healthy community for children to grow up in. It takes a village. To read more about the documentary, go to www.natureplayqld.org.au/neighbourhoodplayproject. A petition is also available to be signed at the Peachester Fruit Shop, Peachester Café, Peachester General Store and Frohloff’s Fruit Shop.

Shell Beerwah total winners
By Sonia Clark Shell Beerwah (Coochin Creek Co-Op) had an incredibly successful evening recently, winning two top awards at the annual Viva Energy (Shell) conference and gala awards night held in Queenstown, New Zealand. The team, represented by store manager Frances Ross, was awarded the top site for their region (Queensland, WA, SA and NT), and Frances was

awarded National Service Champion of the Year. Both awards mark outstanding achievements for the locally managed business. Frances is absolutely delighted with the awards and the recognition of the Shell Beerwah’s exceptional commitment to customer service and operational excellence. She said the entire team worked extremely hard and were very focussed on always providing good old-fashioned country service. “Each and every team member has contributed to our success and we strive for quality and consistency. We also consistently encourage our team to put themselves in the place of the customer and to treat every customer as if they are a secret shopper,” Frances said. Although she may not admit it, the Service Champion of the Year was one of the most important awards of the event. Frances competed against a field of candidates from across their region and was absolutely honoured to take out the prestigious top award. Frances joined the team at Coochin Creek Co-op in mid-2016 and moved to the Shell side of the business later that year. Frances said the camaraderie and support was strong within the organisation and while each individual brought their own strengths, the direction provided by management utilised those strengths in a very positive way. “My personal philosophy is to never assume and

always put yourself in the place of the customer and how you would like to be treated,” Frances said. Her approach is to treat every customer as though they are a secret shopper - to listen to customers, record their feedback and take action wherever possible to improve results and customer experience. Coochin Creek Co-Op general manager Steve Williams said the awards recognised the fabulous Shell Beerwah team effort led by Frances and was a great indication of the customer focussed service provided by the co-op team. As well as taking out two top awards, Shell Beerwah also received a recognition award honouring 30 years of partnership between the Shell service station and Coochin Creek Co-Op.

Age no barrier to university Pauline Lorenzen, a 75-year-old Beerwah local, is living proof that it’s never too late to make a career change. Pauline embarked on a law degree at 70 years of age and on Friday, April 12 she officially graduated in front of her family and friends. With a career spanning a number of industries including operating businesses, running accommodation centres and working as a teacher aide and librarian, Pauline retired three separate times before deciding to take on a law degree. “My father taught me there was nothing I couldn’t do if I wanted to do it,” Pauline said. “I knew I was at an age where I had to retire but I wanted to keep my brain active and I’d always had an interest in the law.” Originally enrolling at James Cook University in Cairns, Pauline transferred her studies to the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) when she and her husband moved to South East Queensland to be closer to family. A mother to three, grandmother to 14 and great grandmother to 17, Pauline studied full time and completed several legal placements, including a 90-hour internship at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service in Ipswich. “I worked alongside eight solicitors there and we hit the ground running in the court house every morning,” Pauline said. “Most of the work I was involved in was with Aboriginal children who had been charged with

Business News Beerwah Hideaway Buy a Bale support
By Sonia Clark Beerwah Hideaway was visited by a Rural Aid charity representative recently who presented a certificate of appreciation to the business for its support of the Buy a Bale scheme. Since joining the program business owners Amanda Warren and Glen Kerr have committed to a $100 donation to the Buy a Bale program for every wedding booked. To date they have donated $6,200. Amanda said that she first heard about the drought relief program through Glen’s mum who, instead of birthday presents asks for the money to be put towards buying a bale. As both Amanda and Glen come from farming backgrounds the cause is particularly close to hearts. Amanda said they were inspired to be a better, caring and more ethical business after they attended a talk by one of the founders of B1G1 (Buy1Give1), a giving program that encourages businesses worldwide to change lives just by doing what they normally do. Aid l Rura from le Since attending the talk, Cast n Hideaway Team and Jaso each time someone books accommodation, a small donation is made through B1G1 to provide clean water or food to countries in famine, and when a wedding is booked the couple donate to Rural Aid. Amanda said while they certainly didn’t expect the certificate, it was nice to be recognised for their contribution as we they were only a small business. “It would be great if more businesses got on board as every contribution helps,” Amanda said. Celebrity behind the bar
If you dropped into the Landsborough Hotel on the Thursday night before Easter you might have noticed a bit of extra buzz in the air. No, it wasn’t the anticipation of a visit from the Easter bunny but the excitement of having Mick Gould from the popular television show ‘Married at First Sight’ as a celebrity barman. Word is that there was a bit of a crowd on the night and that the customers enjoyed Mick’s great Aussie banter and impressive bar skills.

Glasshouse Country business roundtable Chamber to meet at Meat at Landsborough A group of interested business leaders from across Glasshouse Country met for lunch with divisional councillor Rick Baberowski just before Easter to speak about the Sunshine Coast Council's budget and priorities for the region. Cr Baberoswki noted that the council was at capacity with its debt levels, with borrowings secured through Queensland Treasury funds. He said the focus for council was on servicing major projects including the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion and Caloundra South priority area (Aura) as well as the delivery of the international broadband submarine cable and the Maroochydore town centre. Each of these major projects would present opportunities for businesses across the region. The increased development and activity, matched with the Sunshine Coast lifestyle, will attract greater talent diversity, Cr Baberowski said. With a growing population, demand from all sectors will increase and it was important that businesses across Glasshouse were positioned to take advantage of emerging markets, he said. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce hosts business roundtable events every three months to discover and discuss issues and opportunities relevant to businesses from across the region.
The chamber will host the next meeting in its business showcase series this Thursday, May 2, at Meat at Landsborough from 5.30pm. The business showcase series offers members and guests of the chamber an insight into local businesses, their stories, challenges and inspirations. Join Lisa and Andrew Grigor to hear about the first year of their new venture. A born-and-bred Beerwah local, Andrew began his butchery career more than three decades ago at the Coorparoo Butchers training college. His trade was honed with his apprenticeship at Bribie Island and then Maleny Butchery. In 2006 Andrew operated his first butchery in Glasshouse until 2015 and since 2017 his focus has been on delivering quality meats to families and businesses across the region. Tickets for the event are $16.91, which includes a selection of mouthwatering meats alongside a welcome beverage. New poetry groups are starting to pop up all over South East Queensland and are going from strength to strength. Ian McDonald, who is actively promoting bush poetry on the Sunshine Coast, has decided that there is a need for two new groups, one in Kawana and one in the Glass House Mountains area. Ian has booked meeting rooms at both the Beerwah and Kawana libraries for the groups and has set dates for interested poets to attend. He said there was still a bit to do to organise a new group but it had been surprisingly easy so far. Australian Bush Poets Association promotions officer Mick Martin has been supporting Ian to form the new groups. At its recent annual general meeting the association passed a motion for new poetry groups to receive $500 funding, which will be strictly accountable and is intended to be used on the costs of advertising, signage, room hire, etc. Mick said bush poetry, as we know it, would only survive if more poets were brought into the fold as inactivity would guarantee failure. Anyone in the Sunshine Coast area interested in being part of a poetry group are invited to attend the group meetings, which are held from 9am12noon on the second Saturday of the month at the Beerwah Library and the third Thursday of the month at the Kawana Library. The next meeting of the Glass House Poets Group will be on Saturday, May 11 and the Kawana group on Thursday, May 16. For more information call Ian on 0435 565 873.

It will be CAP’s second exhibition at Vianta in Beerwah. Some of the group’s sessions are structured but there is no formal tutor. CAP showcases a wealth of talent and diversity, including members who are qualified teachers/ tutors and art prize winners, and some members with art training or studying art. Artists exhibiting in May are Cheryl Mortimer, Christine Miles, De Nelson, Helen Hall, Kay Koina, Leslee Swallow, Lorrie Bradford, Sheryl Davies, Stephanie White, Sue Davey, Tina Galloway and Tineka Berghofer. The exhibition will be opened by Richard Muldoon, president of Arts Connect, at 7pm this Friday, May 3, at Vianta located at 70 Simpson Street, Beerwah.
Bilby spotted at Beerwah
Beerwah Police can confirm that the Easter Bilby was sighted at Australia Zoo over the Easter long weekend. The Easter Bilby was last seen handing out small chocolates to visitors on Sunday morning and wishing everyone a happy Easter. It is not known if the Easter Bilby was planning on resting at the zoo after his busiest weekend of the year, or if he was just visiting family. Although this adorable nocturnal marsupial is an endangered animal, he assured us that he will be back next Easter. The Easter Bilby with Senior Constable Susan Loundes

Keeping the Maleny Show spirit alive Approved soccer training for kids aged 18 months - 7 years
FREE TRIAL Classes Saturday Mornings at Landsborough Primary School
Maleny local Jaimee Sweeting, 15, is keen to continue her family’s tradition of being involved in the Maleny Show Society. This year she will be a first-time entrant in both the Charity Person and Junior Showgirl at the Maleny Show Ball. Jaimee is following in the footsteps of her mum Anne Sweeting, who entered the charity competition 30 years ago and has fond memories of her experience. Anne’s family has been members and volunteers of the show society since the early 1960s. Jaimee entered the showgirl competition because she loves the show and thinks it’s an important event for the Maleny community. Her grandmother Irene Owens, who recently died, had been a volunteer for the show society for decades, and Jaimee wanted to keep the show spirit alive in Irene’s memory. Jaimee is sponsored by Maleny Apex Club, which is holding a trivia night on May 25 at the Maleny Show pavilion where Jaimee will also be fundraising. Jaimee has been fundraising locally only since early April, and is currently selling raffle tickets for a quilt. If you would like to buy a ticket you can phone Jamiee on 0419 563 878.
The prize for the charity person event is $2000 worth of travel vouchers so it’s worth the effort. If you or someone you know would like to get involved this year, it’s definitely not too late to nominate. Entries are open for the Charity Person, Junior Showgirl, Showgirl and Rural Charity person and junior Ambassador until showgirl entrant Jaimee May 17. Sweeting with her raffle prize Full details are available on the Maleny Show website or you can speak to the coordinator Helen Gilmour Walsh anytime on 0418 163 118 to find out more. The overall winner of the showgirl and rural ambassador competitions in 2019 have the chance to win a trip to Texas in the USA if they compete in the state final at the Brisbane Ekka. The judging takes place at the Maleny Show Ball on Saturday, May 18.

Rockabilly Cowboy creates science fiction The Beerwah Writers Group has done it again with another of their members publishing a book., This time it is well known Rockabilly Cowboy and local writer Ian B MacLeod. Ian’s latest book ‘Dark Horse Mountain’ follows the main character Star, who just happens to be a stallion leading a herd of wild brumbies, who is abducted to Alpha Centauri by aliens. Ian said that although singing was an important part of his life, writing helped develop imagination and fed the curious child within us all.
Ian reckons if you enjoy science fiction you will love this book and that it will be a gripping read for young readers, teens and anyone seeking adventure. The book is locally published with illustrations and photos, and is set at Black Mountain in North Queensland. If you would like to purchase a copy of the book you can contact Ian directly by phoning 5494 1482.
Beerwah Lions more scam aware Contributed by Bob Banner The guest speaker at the recent Beerwah Lions meeting was John Northey from the Queensland Government’s Office of Fair Trading, who gave a most interesting talk providing guidance for consumers and information on how to avoid the proliferation of current scams. John emphasised the need to secure the best deal before agreeing to purchase larger items like televisions. He warned about cold calling tradespeople offering cheap deals on driveways or other household repairs. If it seems too good to be true then it probably is. Scammers usually
make contact with potential victims via email or phone. He urged people to hang up immediately if they feel the caller to be suspect. If you don’t recognise an email sender don’t click on any part of the email. He also explained that banks never seek important information from clients via emails. If in doubt don’t hesitate to contact the Office of Fair Trading. He also spoke about the federal government’s Scamwatch website (www.scamwatch.gov.au) that you should check each month to learn more about the latest scams. You can also register to receive alerts about the latest scams. The tables were turned on president Charles Farran at the dinner meeting when the club secretary Justin Neubecker presented him with a pin celebrating 12 years of community service. Lion Lottie Nisbett also received an award for her efforts towards growing the club.

Fungi come in a mind-blowing array of forms – jellies, crusts, stinkhorns and corals to name just a few – but one of the most intriguing forms is the bird’s nest fungi. Often gregarious (ie, they appear in groups/troops), these recyclers are at home in decaying organic matter such as wood or bark mulch. Their tiny size means they are often overlooked, which is a shame because they are among the most bizarre, incredible forms of fungi around (and that’s saying something). Have a look with a hand lens or magnifying glass and you’ll see tiny little ‘nests’ filled with tiny little ‘eggs’. Maybe that’s where the birds got the idea! They have a widespread distribution in most ecological regions. The fruiting bodies or spore bodies are generally between 5–15mm wide and 4–8mm high and globe, urn or vase shaped. The cups have shaggy hairy exteriors and smooth or fluted interiors. The eggs are actually peridioles – capsules of spores packaged for distribution. These fungi employ rain-splash spore dispersal … when a raindrop hits a nest at the right angle the peridioles are expelled to about 1m away from the cup. The peridiole sticks to the surface of the plant, leaf or whatever it has landed on. In some species the peridiole has a sticky-ended tail made of fungal threads that attaches it. The peridiole dries out, splits and spores are dispersed. Bird’s nest fungi are in the family Nidulariaceae and include the genera Cyathus, Crucibulum, Nidula, Nidularia, and Mycocalia. Barung Landcare is a leading community-based organisation working to develop ethical solutions for a sustainable future. We support local and regional community empowerment to conserve and enhance the rich diversity of natural resources of the Blackall Range and environs. www.barunglandcare.org.au

You Said It Re: Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch
I am writing in response to the letter from Sharon Bochow published in GC&M News on April 10. I believe Ms Bochow was a senior member of the management board of the social club. Ms Bochow suggests that the two local sub branches should unite to make one. A decision like that would need to be approved by a majority of the members of both branches. All sub branches are charity organisations and no member can gain any personal benefit. Almost all members of the sub branch had nothing to do with the disagreement between the social club and the former sub branch that no longer exists. They are simply a small group of dedicated hardworking people who have nothing to do with any “RSL Social Club”. This small group does an outstanding job in the community, visiting and supporting veterans and providing transport for those in need for medical appointments as well as shopping and general needs. Ms Bochow questions where all of the sub branch funds disappeared to. I know that when the sub branch took possession of their building there was a lot of damage to the property and its infrastructure and a great deal of it's funds were expended repairing the damage as well as expensive legal fees. The sub branch supports the three local schools and provides ANZAC Day and Remembrance services at these schools as well as the Peachester primary school. It is also responsible for the ANZAC Day dawn service, the march and main service in Turner Park Beerwah. It also provides ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services at Australia Zoo. Their resources are well stretched and they are to be commended for their efforts. The Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch is well deserving of the public support it solicits. Rather than condemn this small group of dedicated hard-working people, the community needs to give then their support. Damian Petrie Past president Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch

I love election time. Everyone likes to have their say, but not all hear what's said. Take for instance what the Opposition leader said on electric cars. He didn't say vehicles he said 50% of cars electric by 2030. Now, I am not a genius, just a moderately educated man, and to my way of thinking on the east coast the capital cities would hold more than the 50% of cars. Now I refuse to vote for any of the major or minor parties because none can tell the truth - is the SUV a station wagon or a ute?
CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.
Please will an independent stand up as I need to vote, and alas I am too old. It will be interesting to see what either party will do after May 18. You never know we might still get electric cars. Mike Reese Beerwah
Gobsmacked
As a happy electric car driver for the past four years, I was rather gobsmacked to see electric cars described as “cramped little electricity gobbling boxes on wheels” on the GC&M News’ letters page (April 17). No one has anything to fear from Labor’s newly announced electric vehicle (EV) policy, which will encourage the uptake of EVs with improved charging infrastructure and adoption of EVs in government fleets. There is no plan to take away people’s petrol/ diesel cars or ban their sale. Electric cars are awesome to drive - low maintenance, smooth, quiet and with instant acceleration. Some can even tow a caravan. Last year, I met 70-year-old Silvia Wilson, who travelled right around Australia in her Tesla model S, starting in Biloela. Many new models are arriving this year and I’ll soon be upgrading to a Hyundai Kona electric with a range of 450km. Public fast chargers are starting to appear along highways, including Queensland’s Electric Super Highway that goes from Coolangatta to Cairns. Although owners can install charging boxes in their garage or carport, I’ve been managing with just a power point in mine, using off-peak electricity. With only 0.2% of Australian new car sales currently electric, there will be many years to adjust our network to cope with the electricity needed as more arrive. This will also give us the time to make it clean renewable energy. So, if you want to know about EVs, please don’t listen to politically-motivated scaremongering by politicians. Instead, talk to an EV driver or check out informative Australian EV news sites such as www.drivezero.com.au. Liz Harris Landsborough
Re: Chances blown
Olive Hockings (GC&M News, April 17) states that Bill Shorten has blown his chances of being Prime Minister as his electric car polices will “make young families give up their comfortable, roomy 4WDs”. What garbage! Labor’s policy is a target for half of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030, followed by peak motoring body NRMA saying that the target should be twice as high and twice as quick. The response from the conservatives has been stunning,
SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beerwah 4519
starting with the uninformed drivel from Sky News commentators in response, before misinformation and outright lies were embraced as official party policy from the Coalition by the week’s end. Scott Morrison has even suggested that Labor’s policy will bring an end to the “Australian weekend” – apparently because EVs can’t tow boats or caravans (some of them can). And here’s the irony. The Coalition’s own emissions reduction policy, as revealed by Environment Department officials in Senate Estimates, factors in 25-50% share of electric vehicles in new vehicle sales by 2030. Environment Department secretary Kristin Tilley said that the coordination and facilitation of local, state and federal actions, through a national strategy, is part of the Coalition’s Climate Solutions Package. Ms Hockings would be well advised to widen the scope of her daily news gathering and include independent sources. Murdoch’s politically motivated media is notorious, not only for its conservatively biased reporting, but also for its pressure on wavering conservative politicians to toe the troglodyte line. A future government may even react to the Murdoch line of “fake news” and “post truth” reporting, and force that media empire to put the actual truth in italics and brackets after every printed lie! Bruce James Maleny
Doesn’t add up
The request for land in High Street at Peachester to be resumed as parkland while commendable does not add up. There is the question of road safety, traffic entering and exiting children adjacent to a busy State Route 6 - Kilcoy Beerwah Road, is a major drawback. Some 25 years ago a group of well intentional locals maintained land by the Stanley River and offered to add park settings and play equipment at no cost to the then council but were denied on the grounds it would intrude on the habitat of the Richmond birdwing butterfly. The tennis court land could be better utilised, maybe adding a skate park. There is suitable park land in Fortune Avenue, only ever used a few years back for a Christmas barbeque for local residents. The wonderful area behind the hall adjacent to the school also appears to be underutilised. As the Sunshine Coast Council has shown a lack of acceptable maintenance of existing footpaths, drains and local assets I fail to see the value, at ratepayers expense, to add further to that which already is sitting idle and depreciating. The Poddy Dodger. Peachester
Debt consolidation Having multiple loans can creep up on you. Combining several debts into one single loan, otherwise known as debt consolidation, can make good financial sense as well as significantly lowering the stress load of managing such a hectic financial schedule. However, it needs to be managed correctly. Some of the benefits of consolidating your debts into one loan can include: less paper work (you only receive one set of statements), the convenience of dealing with just one lender, one monthly repayment (making budgeting easier to keep track of), 20
saving on loan fees and charges by paying them on just one loan, potentially a lower interest rate, particularly if you use your home loan to consolidate debt, which can create significant financial savings overall. This all sounds like a no brainer so far. However, there can be pitfalls too, including: lender fees (you may need to pay application fees or exit fees if you are taking out a new loan or getting out of an existing home loan early), government charges (some duties and taxes may apply if you are using your home loan to
consolidate your debt), if you are extending the length of a loan, for example moving a personal loan of five years onto a 30-year home loan, the overall interest charge will be much greater unless you continue to make the same cumulative repayment amounts as prior to the consolidation. Debt consolidation is worth considering if you have multiple debts, particularly if you are going through financial hardship. Once you do consolidate and get your finances under control, be sure not to fall back into bad financial patterns.
Staying in control of your finances is the key to avoiding financial stress. Whatever your financial goal is, write it down, and talk to people who can support you to realise it, like your Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser Teresa Harrison.

You Said It False advertising
Have you seen the McDonalds advertisement where the two elderly people have a talking part? The lady says to her gentleman friend “you gave me this when we were 16 years old”. She then unwraps a piece of paper which says “IOU $6”. If they were 16 years of age when he allegedly gave her the IOU, decimal currency came in to Australia in 1966 and it is now 2019. This means they should be no older than 69 years it is obviously a long time since they were that age. Why do a false advertisement? Do McDonalds think we are all stupid? Quarry concerns
I write to express my gratitude to the people of Beerburrum who so successfully were able to put a halt to quarry operations proposed close to their township. The council vote was five to one to reject the proposal. At least four councillors were absent. It was pleasing to see our divisional councillor Rick Baberowski, was one of the five. We have wonderful little towns here on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, from Beerburrum to Mooloolah, and beyond. I reluctantly accept that the area’s current quarry operations probably have to continue but consent conditions need to be closely monitored and scrutinised. Discussions are currently being held between two members of the Glasshouse community and the Glasshouse quarry representatives. These are proving very challenging. There is one problem that is a concern which I would like to bring to the attention of GC&M News readers. The quarry pays the Sunshine Coast Council a levy per ton of rock trucked. This levy is to pay for maintenance, repairs and alterations to the designated route. The corner of Old Gympie Rd and Coonowrin Road has been identified as a particular concern. Quarry management have said that for months they have been endeavouring to seek the assistance of the works side of council, but to no avail. Council has a clear obligation to be on the front foot with this. This intersection is very busy and is high risk, with both Hanson and Bassett trucks negotiating this corner, as well as the many tourists who visit our beautiful landscape. Re: Slap some tofu on the barbie
Over the years we have had many bigoted prejudiced people that write into the newspaper. They have attacked a variety of small groups including greenies, gay people, boat people, people who support electric cars, people who believe in climate change and now they are attacking the vegans. Vegans are making choices to positively improve their health, while others continue to gorge themselves indiscriminately on meat. It has long been well known that eating too much meat has a direct connection to heart attacks and colon cancer. It is becoming obvious that eating excessive amounts of meat has a detrimental effect on mental health. So make sure you lock up farm animals because obviously, truth be told probably these letter writters are on the dole and have no jobs and are hungry for meat and may resort to eating your livestock. Re: CO2
David Lowry (GC & M News, April 10) interpreted my earlier letter explaining why CO2 gas is not a pollutant as “deriding climate science and dismissing it as a billion dollar fraud” though I made no such claims. He then described the historic scientific study of CO2 noting that around 1900, Arrhenius estimated that doubling atmospheric CO2 would shift global 22
Continued from page 20
temperature by 4 degrees. In 1908 Arrhenius also wrote: “By the influence of the increasing percentage of carbonic acid in the atmosphere we may hope to enjoy ages with more equable and better climates, especially as regards the colder regions of the earth, ages when the earth will bring forth much more abundant crops than at present, for the benefit of rapidly propagating mankind”. From 1910 to 1945 global temperatures warmed 0.52 degrees C at +0.15 C per decade, then cooled for 30 years with climate scientists predicting a new ice age. Atmospheric CO2 increased 29 parts per million (ppm) over those 65 years so what caused the cooling? After 1975 temperatures rose again and from 1979 more accurate satellite measurements showed average warming at +0.13 C per decade up to 2019 as human CO2 emissions doubled and atmospheric CO2 increased by 84ppm to 413ppm. After 1999 average global temperatures levelled off until the extreme 2015 El Niño spiked +0.15 C. Clearly other natural climate drivers caused that warming hiatus as well as the earlier 20th century warming and cooling. Global temperatures have only increased 1 degree C since 1910 with no evidence of runaway warming and the enhanced plant growth from rising atmospheric CO2 is greening the Earth. Research into the effect of human greenhouse gas emissions on our climate has shown scientists that clouds, major ocean circulations and oscillations and solar activity have a far greater influence on our weather than CO2 . Sel Hopley Maleny
Why climate change is a scam
An inherent belief exists that climate change is fear mongering, or a conspiracy, scam, government tax or illuminati. Climate change and global warming are not the same thing. Just like weather and climate are not the same. Each are related, but the key difference is the use of the temporal scale (time scale/data recorded over time). Not months or decades, but centuries and eons. Weather is the day-to-day happenings of air movement in the atmosphere combined with radiation and other factors, whereas climate is how this weather is represented over time. We use the data from weather observations to map a region’s climate over time to produce climate data. Global warming is described within the scientific community as the rising temperature of the Earth’s surface due to increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases enhancing the natural warming effect. That’s all it is. Climate change is the bigger picture amongst global warming, which is merely a symptom. Climate change focuses on the measurements of climate patterns and trends over time and how the data/ evidence is used to make conclusions on the state of a climate region. Patterns and trends include shifting ice, rising sea levels, CO2 concentration levels, etc. The big takeaway – climate is real, so changes in climate must be real. Based on temporal data (evidence of changes over time including data from recent global warming), we are seeing uncharacteristic climate changes. People fear what they don’t understand. Not having substantial knowledge and an informed opinion of these basic climate concepts is why climate change is a scam. James Landsborough
The Adani Failure
The Adani mine has always been a creature of the Liberal Party. In 1999, Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer signed an economic agreement with India which, although cancelled in 2017 by India, committed Australia to the agreement until 2032
The agreement clause reads as follows: “the Agreement shall continue to be effective for a further period of fifteen years from the date of its termination in respect of investments made or acquired before the date of termination of this Agreement.” In August 2010, Adani bought the Carmichael mining rights from Linc Energy, now defunct, whose founder and managing director, Peter Bond, was a major Liberal Party donor. The deal was passed very quickly through the Foreign Investment Review Board. In 2014, the Adani mining proposal was approved by then Environment Minister Greg Hunt and the project got under way. That approval was subsequently overturned by the Federal Court and then upheld. That faulty approval was endorsed by another faulty approval by Environment Minister Melissa Price, who has now passed the buck to the Queensland Labor Government. In a nutshell, the whole sorry affair is a concoction of powerful businessmen and LNP politicians. Adani is part of the LNP's DNA and the LNP has weaponised this environmentally destructive and economically indefensible project. Labor's position is impossible. If the Adani mine is approved, it will provide jobs, contribute to global emissions, trash Indigenous rights, use precious water and provide royalties. If it is terminated, the environment will remain, not provide a precedent for others to mine the Carmichael, but with Australian taxpayers held to ransom by Adani. Whether approved or not, the Adani mine and its effects will blight Australia and its people for a very long time. What is more important - preserving Australia or making money at our country's expense? Ken Dyer Landsborough
Re: dismissing climate change
Only fools deny that humans are damaging the environment in every possible way but people who realise it also have to realise we cannot just turn a switch and change everything. Coal will be with us for a long time yet. If you are thinking of punishing the Coalition by voting for minor parties because of its attitude on coal you are wasting your time. Every leader, state and federal, wants that coal. Bill Shorten (no/yes/no/maybe), our Premier wants it, but they are trying to not admit until after the election! I didn't start out to make this political, but while I am here I might just mention that in punishing the government, Labor could get in and they can't get in without the Greens. It will be a union/Greens/Labor (in that order) party. Now that frightens me. The other thing is"50% of all vehicles to be electric by 2030". No costing, no idea how! Is this the Greens’ influence? Eight to ten minutes to re-charge? Really Bill? Do you realise how many charging stations will have to be built throughout the country, how much more electricity will have to be created? Recharge at home? That's okay until everybody comes home, plugs in and oops! Why all these blackouts? I have no problem with the concept of electric cars, just the lack of thought. Yes, Bill will promise you the world, give you large pay rises. Problem is, the cost of living will go up so high you will look back on today's cost of living as Utopia. The government has its problems, they may not be perfect, but they will not send the country broke. Don’t forget, it’s not that long ago that Labor had the same leadership problems. We need a Coalition with a majority not a union/ Greens led Labor party. If you are going to vote for minor parties, then at least check where their preferences are going. Ron Batty Beerburrum

Because no one is providing a plan for the future I can trust and all I see from career politicians, the men and women we look to for leadership, is short-sighted vote buying and back office party donation deals while they remind us daily the budget is getting better and better when we all know the economy is going nowhere and people are going backwards We need better ideas! The $75 one-off electricity bill payment will not fix the electricity prices into the future and this short-sighted offer only highlights they really don’t get it. I actually don’t want to be a politician. I don’t trust any of them, but something needs to change and I’m sick of moaning about it, so I’m having a go because a veteran mate I have worked with in the bush for the past 10 years said I can make a difference and he’s a good judge of character, so I’m going to trust him on this one and do what I can to make difference. Who knows, maybe a team of everyday Aussies with some common sense can disrupt and change a political system that’s not serving the country or the Australian people in the way it was intended to. A big issue facing locals is better support for small family businesses. I have lived and worked in the bush for the past 10 years and 12 years working for small family engineering businesses and the lack of support for small business for over 30 years is a disgrace. Those businesses are the backbone of every community and rather than assist them to grow and employ locals, governments enforce a tax regime that strangles their cash flow that in turn effects everyone in the community either directly or indirectly. Delaying the payment of provisional tax will free up small business cash flow and circulate $70 billion every year through our economy. That’s better for everyone. Why can’t Australians claim the interest on their home loan as a tax deduction just like big business does – it’s only fair isn’t it! The tax system needs reform so it’s fair for all Australians not just big businesses operating from tax havens. 24
Andrew Wallace
Liberal National Party
Phone: 5493 5556 Email: andrew.wallace.mp@aph.gov.au Website: www.andrewwallacemp.com.au Facebook: www.facebook.com/wallace4fisher I believe that we have all been given certain skills and gifts and it is incumbent on all of us to share them with others for the betterment of our community. I have been involved in many different community groups as a volunteer since I was 14. However, I have always believed that federal politics is the apex of community service because there is no other career where you can help to improve quite so many people’s lives. That is why I am standing for re-election as your federal Member for Fisher. The number one issue that locals raise with me is infrastructure. I have lived here for 26 years and I know that for decades the Sunshine Coast was left behind by all governments. Our road and rail infrastructure is not good enough and if we don’t act it is only going to get worse. Since 2016 I have helped to begin turning this situation around. Since my election there has been more Australian Government investment in our region’s infrastructure than ever before. The first phases of the Liberal National Government’s $3.2 billion worth of Bruce Highway upgrades between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane are already at the half way stage with exit 190 already open. The second phase, extra lanes between Caboolture and Steve Irwin Way, will commence in 2020. Likewise, following our government’s contribution of $390 million we have 70% of the funds we need to duplicate the North Coast rail line and get more regular and reliable trains. Preparatory work is under way. However, we cannot afford endless construction works. We need the extra lanes and tracks and the improved interchanges that we have funded built now. If re-elected I will work hard and constructively with both state and federal governments to achieve two outcomes. First, fast tracking the highway upgrades that we have funded to get them completed as soon as possible, and second, securing the remaining funds we need to complete the rail duplication and, if the business case stacks up, to build high speed rail between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.

Phone: 0436 111 179 Email: daniel.parsell@queenslandlabor.org Website: www.alp.org.au/our-people/our-people/daniel-parsell Facebook: www.facebook.com/laborforfisher G’day. I’m Daniel Parsell, your local Labor candidate for the upcoming federal election. I’m a 28-year-old electrician living in Glass House Mountains. It’s an absolute honour to be running for the Australian Labor Party and would be an even greater honour to serve the people of Fisher if elected by you on May 18. Since January, my team and I have been door knocking, phone calling and holding street stalls to speak with thousands of residents about what you would like to see improved here in the beautiful Sunshine Coast hinterland. This is my first tilt at politics and the reason I put my hand up is because I genuinely enjoy helping people. I love volunteer work. I love seeing how people, when they pull together, can improve their communities. Whether through sporting clubs, charities or community groups, volunteering creates a sense of mateship within groups of people who may not otherwise have ever met. By volunteering they bond through hard work and their achievements have substantial benefits for the broader community. I see the role of a member of parliament as an extension of this volunteering ethos, and to pursue such an opportunity is why I’ve thrown my hat in the ring. Out in the suburbs and townships of Fisher one subject that has been raised with me time and again is education. With billions of dollars cut from public schools, TAFEs and universities across the country, the current government is creating a bleak future for our next generation. A Shorten Labor government would redress this chronic underfunding. Under Labor an additional $19.58 million would be invested in state schools in Fisher over the next three years. I attended a state school and was the first in my family to finish year 12. I went on to study at TAFE and last year attended my first year of university. I’ve seen first-hand how education creates opportunities. I’m proud to be a candidate for Labor, the party that believes every child, regardless of where they live, should have the option to attend a great state school.

The main issue facing locals is the need for major reforms … of planning, of the constitution and of taxation. As an ex-landlord, I can see that council planning permissions need reform. There are an estimated 1,600 people sleeping rough or in their cars and being moved on by Sunshine Coast Council. I propose to eliminate this to zero by completely deregulating the housing market of the type of accommodation that homeless people would otherwise occupy, which has caused this problem in the first place. Councils would be made responsible to allow a certain proportion of planning permission zones mandated to include this type of accommodation. Electoral and constitutional reform is also high on my agenda. Most of the problem is that a total of 72% of the population are excluded from running for parliament (12% cannot vote and 60% are ineligible to enter parliament under section 44 of the constitution) and therefore become second class citizens experiencing taxation without representation from the outset; and this is just a ruse to keep normal people out of parliament. An Australian citizen is deterred from even running for parliament meaning parliament is unrepresentative of the electorate. I believe that state governments should gradually be dissolved giving greater powers to local government, with federal planning powers being increased. But my main platform is genuine tax reform. The safest and most reliable way of regenerating the economy, instead of spending on armies of government workers (more than half the workforce), is to put money back in non-government workers pockets with an automated tax system I have formulated called the gifts goods and services tax or GGST. This has no offshore not-for-profit charitable trust foundation status … everybody pays a 0.5% credit and 0.5% debit tax which will eliminate both income tax and the current GST that takes 100 hours per annum for businesses to report to the ATO.

I, like many Australians, have become fed up with the government not listening to the people. Our farmers, elderly, vets, homeless all seem to be overlooked with so much money sent overseas to make us look good in the world’s eyes. Ridiculous parliamentary pensions and privileges have to go. I could either sit back and complain like so many others or I can stand up and make changes from within once elected. I am incorruptible and will always put my electorate, my country and its people first. Consider me the Elliot Ness of Fisher. Having spent years volunteering in our community, it is time to step up into the big league where I can facilitate real change. Our children’s welfare is one of my biggest issues. The Love Australia or Leave Party holds dear the issues associated with the Family Court of Australia, Child Support agency and the child protection agency. Having personal dealings with all three of these entities, I can testify that they need a bomb put under them. A royal commission into the child protection agency. All too often we hear of children taken off the good parents while children die at the hands of parents "known to the department”. Now there are some great people working in these departments, don't get me wrong, making changes to kids’ lives. Do they either need better leadership, more power to remove children from danger or better funding? Only a royal commission will give us the answers we need. The family law courts have a huge backlog of cases, taking years at times to get through the system. There needs to be a second tier, for want of a better word, that deals with cases. It should be given the power to make orders based on the pig-headedness of one or both parties, always with the best interest of the child as the centre focal point. All too often these cases are drawn out for years at the will of one parent wishing to ‘punish’ the other, when it is the child who is getting hurt. The Child Support agency … do I have the answer? No, I don't, YET.

So I think Australia deserves a change. I’ve worked in construction for 15 years. I understand issues that everyday people face and I don’t think they are too hard to tackle. My question to you is: When was the last time politicians made a decision that was in the best interests of the country before it benefited themselves? Most of us can’t remember and I struggle to remember a time too. It’s time for things to change. It’s time real people are represented by their parliament. I offer you a pledge while representing the electorate of Fisher. 1. My door is always open. I want to be a voice for the people so feel free to call or drop in if you have concerns. 2. I will conduct local meetings about upcoming legislation so we can discuss pros and cons for our electorate and agree where that vote should go. 3. Every vote I make in parliament will be in the best interests of the people of Fisher. I will cross the floor if that is what I need to do. 4. My travel expenses will be limited to flights to Canberra. If another politician invites me to a good friend’s birthday in the Hunter Valley, I’d thank them for the offer and send a card. I’m not doing the things that voters are annoyed about. 5. Politicians superannuation would have the same conditions we have. They would all be brought into line with each other. Music Today Music in our life
How can we measure the value of music in our lives? It gives so much to so many of us, perhaps as part of a shared music making experience or by simply having others playing for us. As therapy it is immeasurable, not just in aged care homes where we have been able to gauge extraordinary results, but also in hospitals and community centres. It is well known that schools that have active music programs achieve the best overall academic results. There is the fun side of music - it can be used as a playful thing of abstraction but it can be used to control as well when it stimulates us on the dance floor or lulls us to sleep. And, for those of us who saw ‘A Clockwork Orange’ will remember, it can be used to rid dubious characters of their bad habits! For me it is a constant in my day, whether I am working on a musical project or having it work on me in my subconscious! Its capacity to move from the conscious mind to the subconscious and back is intriguing. It can transport us in time to relive memories and as such it can provide an emotional landscape for our lives. Listeners can find in it a conduit for a deeper connection with their spirit. Whether they want to enter into it is up to them, but the portal stands before them through music. Music is a language but it communicates beyond words and thought. There is even a case for it to be considered the original language as the first sounds man experienced were his grunts (musical noises) and those of beasts and birds. I was recently speaking to my electricity meter reader. We got onto music and he was soon telling me his story. He trained as an opera singer in Adelaide then moved to Brisbane to undertake a masters in music therapy. He wanted to use his skills as a singer in this relatively new field. Sadly, he said funding for music therapy in the health industry went by the wayside as cuts by successive governments hit home. It is now at the point, he said, where it is no longer viable as a career. Many other musicians have similar stories. Let’s hope it is just a glitch as music’s value to the lives of nearly all of us is incalculable. Michael has a recording studio in Peachester. From the churches Easter has come and gone ‌ what is it all about? Easter eggs and bunnies, special services in the churches. But what is it about? It is about a man who lived and walked on our planet, in Israel to be exact, for 33 years. Not so long ago, only about 2000+ years. More specifically, it is about His death by Roman execution designed to be a long, painful and humiliating death. Also, a very public one as a warning to others who dared to go against the authorities. Why was He such an enemy of the state? Actually He was seen as an enemy of the synagogue as well. But why? What did He do to deserve such a terrible death? Did he murder? No. He healed people and even brought dead people back to life! Was he planning a coup? No. He said give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. Was he a terrorist or terrorist leader? No. He preached a message of love and peace. Why then was he tried, condemned and executed? He was condemned because he dared to speak out against corruption, wrong practices and hypocrisy. He dared to preach love in a powerhungry world. But that is the earthly reason. There is another much more significant reason. He willingly accepted to be a sacrifice so that

Division 1 - Sunshine Coast It was an honour to attend and take part in this year’s ANZAC Day services. Congratulations to our local schools and RSLs for the excellent organisation of this year’s ceremonies despite the wet conditions in Turner Park at Beerwah. With the fortunate combination of Easter and ANZAC Day, I hope all residents of division one managed to take a good break as we move further into another jam-packed year for our region. By now I’m sure local residents of Beerburrum and Landsborough have heard about two recent prominent council actions. The first was the council decision to support my refusal motion to reject the Barro Group application for a new quarry in Beerburrum. The applicant has subsequently lodged an appeal so there is another journey ahead. The second was the council’s acquisition of the old corner shop (Maynard’s) in Landsborough. Now this important site is in community ownership, so the community and council can take the time needed to work out how it can best serve Landsborough’s future as a stronger destination.
First rail-to-trail Beerburrum trailhead Works are well advanced at Parrot Park bushland reserve to create the excellent new Beerburrum trailhead, together with an exciting artistic screening area to be painted by Beerburrum State School in an Aboriginal theme. The trailhead entry itself will include new park entry signage and information centre, new sandstone block yarning circle, bike racks, adjacent stone seating, picnic tables, bins and seating, drinking fountain, large turfed area and landscaping. Works will take around three months all up, weather permitting.
Adventure Sunshine Coast Are you ready for an adventure this weekend? Adventure Sunshine Coast is a ground-breaking, super easy new website that will transform the way you find walking, cycling, biking, horse riding and paddling trails. Visit https://adventure.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and simply click on an activity and select the difficulty level to receive all your local trails with photos, descriptions and reviews. I found the best way to use it was to click on the blue dots on the map to help you discover a lesser known trail right on our doorstep in division one.
Monthly meet and greet Last month’s session at Glass House Mountains was well attended and I met a number of residents to discuss topics such as pathways, street lighting, parking, speed limits and current development applications. As I rotate around the division one localities, the next session is planned for Thursday, May 30 at the Beerwah Library meeting room from 9.30-11.30am. These sessions are designed as an informal opportunity to drop by, say hello and chat all things local government. State Member for Caloundra Landsborough forum initiates a new united community group
I would like to thank those from the Landsborough community who joined us on Friday, April 26 at the public forum to discuss their concerns and aspirations for this town when the rail overpass is finally built. I would also like to thank state Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell and Cr Rick Baberowski for joining the day’s discussions as well as community guest speakers Ken Husband, Tim Fitzpatrick, Chris Bruhn and Jeff Harris. However, we were not joined by Transport Minister Mark Bailey or representatives from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, both stating that a public meeting to discuss the overpass was too “premature”. We are still some way from actually breaking ground on this project but it is certain the Queensland Government will be going forward with a rail overpass and, with the introduction of faster trains, the level crossings will have to close for community safety. Landsborough has grown understandably frustrated with the government’s mixed messaging on this issue. While some residents have already received information about land resumption and design concepts have been made public, there is nothing in the forward budget to actually begin construction on the overpass. It is possible that we could see money for this put into the 2019/2020 budget but we simply don’t know yet. What is certain is that any overpass will, without a doubt, have an impact on this town. However, as a community Landsborough can decide if the future will be bleak or virtuous. There have been many concerns raised – concerns that at times are completely at odds with one another. What I took away from Friday was the sense that this is a proud community. This is a community that does not just want to exist as a blip along the Bruce Highway. This is a community that is growing a rich identity steeped in heritage and it is willing to stand up and fight for that identity. The forum had what I feel was a very successful conclusion. Members of the respective groups in town, and other residents and business owners agreed to come together to form a new reference group of 14 with the first meeting to be held at the end of May. This group will be self-managed and will aim to take on all sides, all perspectives and form a cohesive vision. With Andrew Powell and Rick Baberowski, I have agreed to remain in close contact with the group and provide any information and guidance required. I will be sure to keep the community informed of the reference group’s progress.
New Landsborough reference group members Dr Michael Vuocolo, Tim Fitzpatrick, Chris Bruhn, Ian Venning, Chris Brooker, Ashley Grigor, Glenn Kirkpatrick, Cheryl Rutland, Stephen Palmer, Juanita Flett, Ian Hope and Len Berthelsen. AUTUMN/WINTER 2019
From your councillor As many are aware, it will be time for me to hang up my councillor hat on 28 March, next year. Until then, it’s business as usual. We’ve lots to do and less than a year in which to do it!
It wasn’t that long ago that the Big Pineapple was one of Australia’s top tourist attractions. Fast forward 40 years and a multi-million dollar renewal project is transforming this icon. I was recently at the big fruit with Kate Jones, Queensland Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development, for the launch of the TreeTop Challenge, Australia’s highest adventure course, and the Curated Plate, a new four-day destination food festival on the Sunshine Coast. Both are expected to boost tourists numbers visiting the coast and hinterland, and give businesses in the rural railway townships the opportunity to capitalise on extra tourist dollars.
From your Mayor With our fantastic climate and natural environment, it stands to reason that the Sunshine Coast is a community that loves to be outdoors and active. Research suggests our region has some of the best health outcomes in the nation, while our great outdoors attracts growing numbers of local and international visitors for sporting events, conferences and holidays. We love our sport and are home to the Sunshine Coast Lightning – Australia’s most successful start-up national sporting team – and to the Pro Racing Sunshine Coast cycling stars, who are shining internationally. Council is also investing in community sport and recreation facilities like our multi-milliondollar upgrades to the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex and the Caloundra Tennis Centre, which started recently. These upgrades will provide better facilities for local AFL, netball and tennis players at all levels.
Balancing the environment, economic and community priorities is at the heart of council’s decision to seek international recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere. A biosphere can create niche markets for products, services, facilities and practices. This is significant for the agricultural, forestry, fisheries and tourism sectors so please get behind our nomination bid by participating in the community consultation on council’s website, before it closes on June 28. Congratulations to Maleny Dairies, People’s Choice winners at the Australian Dairy Milk Awards, and to the Big Pineapple Music Festival, winning the Queensland Festivals of the Year Award for the second year.
Mary Cairncross update This newsletter was written from the wonderful Mary Cairncross Rainforest Discovery Centre. It’s a perfect place to reflect on Bob Taylor’s vision. Bob was a dedicated volunteer who was passionate that the reserve continue to grow economically and ecologically. I am delighted that in recent years land adjacent to Mary Cairncross has been purchased through the Environment Levy to help protect and expand the reserve’s important habitat. Most recently the reserve has buzzed about the BioBlitz – a community event attended by scientists, artists, First Nations representatives, climbers, volunteers and more than 250 members of the public all focused on finding as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. Once these species are verified they will be on show at the Discovery Centre in the Biodiversity: That’s Life exhibition and a full report will be available in June.
Adventure Sunshine Coast
Council continues to invest in bikeways and coastal pathways and to protect our green space by adding to our environmental landholdings. However you enjoy your lifestyle, the Sunshine Coast is the healthy, smart and creative place to be.
With over 150 free, self-guided walking, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding and canoeing activities, the Adventure Sunshine Coast online guidebook is your passport to our great outdoors. The guide is designed to help people of all ages and abilities explore land and water trails across 53 local areas.

Some say the Maleny Indoor Aquatic Centre will never happen. I don’t share that sentiment. I believe if you can dream it, you can achieve it. Each community plays a major role in achieving their own assets. With small amounts of government funding, Maleny Bridge Club purpose built a new clubhouse providing the community with a wonderful asset and the Maleny Golf Club delivered an 18-hole golf course. Yes, the Aquatic Centre is an expensive exercise, but the hinterland community is deserving and having seen what Maleny can achieve, I have no doubt the vision of the late Joyce Newton will be realised. The hinterland brims with hardworking, community minded people and is, in my opinion, the most beautiful part of the region. Let’s keep working together to better the place we love and call home. Thank you for the opportunity to represent you.

LEST WE FORGET Medals proudly on show
By Lea Parkes For many local families the opportunity to attend ANZAC Day ceremonies together has become a tradition and for the Giblin–Webb family of Landsborough this is especially true. In 2006 Denise Giblin’s dad Arthur Giblin at age 80 started travelling from his home on the Central Coast of NSW to attend the ANZAC Day dawn service at Landsborough and the March in Beerwah. Each year except one, Arthur has marched at Beerwah with his grandson Jake Giblin Webb. In the one year that Jake was away travelling his younger sister Holly stepped up and marched

with her grandfather. Arthur, now aged 93, is a World War II veteran who put his age up to join the Royal Navy to escape his grim London orphanage. Arthur’s younger brother died last year in England and when family went through his belongings they discovered Arthur’s father’s World War I medals. These medals had never been worn in a march so they made their world debut at this year’s Beerwah ANZAC service and were worn by Jake. These days Jake lives at Wauchope in NSW so he too has travelled this year to keep the family tradition going.

Farm world fun
It has been a hive of activity lately at Glass House Early Education Centre with some super fun and exciting programs keeping little people happily busy and engaged. Over the past few weeks, the junior kindy class has been particularly involved in some entertaining animal themed activities. Centre director Dee McCann explained that educators in the junior kindy class started with various activities based around zoo animals before moving onto games and activities based around farm animals, which has proved extremely popular with the children. One of the highlights has been a play-based experience inviting the children to play in ‘farm world’. This wonderfully interactive experience has them engaging in a farm scene with different textured environments for the different farm animals, farm vehicles and people. “Not only does this activity provide a great imaginative hands-on experience as the children create different farm scenarios, it also encourages the children to interact positively with each other as they share their ideas and resources,” Dee said.
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
Other highlights have included games such as Animal Sounds Bingo, where identifying different animals sounds and matching them to pictures enhances concentration and focus, and a roll and move game where the children imitate the movements and actions of animals. Other fun activities include animal I spy, making a zoo complex with Play-Doh, matchsticks and animals, and matching animal figures to photos. Naturally the animal themed early learning program features loads of animal book reading and story time adventures. Another fun activity as part of the farm animal focus, is having the children make hand and footprint animals that will be compiled to make individual keepsake farm books. These keepsakes provide a lovely memento for both the children and their families for years to come. The centre prides itself on providing an engaging learning journey that supports the holistic and scaffolding approach to learning. Some of the benefits of enrolling at Glasshouse Early Learning Centre include flexibility with hours available for busy families from 6.30am–6.30pm and healthy eating choices and habits being actively
promoted – with healthy meals provided as part of the daily fees. Dee explained that each child is uniquely different, so at Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre interests and styles of learning are modified to incorporate an individual learning experience to assist children achieve the necessary age-appropriate skills. This includes purposeful play, active hands on learning, a developmental approach and working collaboratively. Educational theories support the importance of programs which have a strong emphasis on the fundamentals such as language, literacy and mathematical concepts as well as the creative arts (art, music and dance), development of life skills, problem solving and investigation. “We provide a secure environment to build the tools of understanding and appreciate the diverse aspects of the different approaches that cover a variety of learning developmental areas. We do this through an emergent style curriculum,” Dee said. To find out more about enrolment availability, or for an obligation free tour of the centre, please call 5438 7311, or call into 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

If you fondly remember a time when the family would gather on the sofa or around the dining table and tune into the wireless for the latest news or entertainment, Bankfoot House and Anywhere Festival have an incredible opportunity to relive those days. For two shows only on Saturday, May 11, The Drama Merchant and his radio team will bring Louisa May Alcott’s universally beloved novel and coming-of-age story ‘Little Women’ to the picturesque property of Bankfoot House in the Glass House Mountains. The Radioplay Hour is a retro audio adventure that transports audiences back to a time when radio was at the heart of family life. Think of it as an audio book performed live before your very ears. Cr Rick Baberowski said the enchanting event would transport audiences back to a bygone era. “We’re bringing Bankfoot House back to life in this intimate setting where a small audience of 8-10 people will have the opportunity to sit around the dining table and experience what it was like to listen to a radio play,” Cr Baberowski said. “Alternatively, if you would like to see the radio play come to life, you can sit in front of the cast in the Mary Grigor Centre as part of the ‘studio audience’ and witness the director, performers and sound effects team in action.” Tickets cost from $17.50 to $42.50 for this special Anywhere Festival event and will sell fast. Book your ticket today at https://anywhere.is/listings/littlewomen/.
Vivaldi’s Venice in concert
After another standing ovation performance at the Woodford Folk Festival, the Inspiration Project Choir is presenting some rarely heard works by Vivaldi. Music director Kim Kirkman said many people know the famous ‘Gloria’ by Vivaldi but he also composed many other Glorias. “The one that we will present features a virtuosic vocal solo to be sung by professional mezzo soprano Amanda Cole,” Kim said. The concert also features Romanian violinist Helen Brereton performing Vivaldi’s ‘Autumn’ from the ‘Four Seasons’. Also included in the concert is ‘Credo’ by Vivaldi and pieces by Galuppi and Gasparini. The concert will be performed at the Caloundra Uniting Church (Queens Street) on Saturday, May 11 at 2pm and in Maleny the next day, Sunday, May 12 at 2pm in the Maleny Primary School Hall (Bunya Street). Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online via www.trybooking.com for the separate locations or contact Paige on 0411 425 793.
Quilt Show
Members of the Quota Club of Maleny will hold their annual Quilt Show this weekend, May 4-5, at the Maleny State School hall in Bunya Street, starting at 9am on both days. Numerous colourful quilts will be on display together with demonstrations, mini cent sale, raffle quilt and sales tables with all things quilting. Teas and light lunches will be available each day. Proceeds will support local projects together with the club’s ongoing financial support to Queensland farmers’ drought/flood relief. All welcome.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in May That’s a lot of pumpkin pie, Ashton!
• If your spring flowering seedlings haven’t survived the recent rains it’s not too late to plant Iceland poppies, pansies or snapdragons to fill the gaps. • Grass growth will start to slow down now but weeds still grow. Keep on top of weeds, especially bindi, clover and tropical chickweed. • Bare rooted roses will be in stores now but don’t rush in and buy as the optimum time for planting is the end of next month. • Gingers and heliconias that have finished flowering, such as parrots beak heliconia, can be cut back now leaving the new growth for next season’s flowering display. • Apply a light dusting of lime to bare vege beds. Don’t apply fertliser at the same time as the lime reacts with the nitrogen creating ammonia gas. • Plant leafy coriander plants now. The cooler temperatures will stop them bolting to seed. • Your strawberry plants should be coming on well now. Apply a little pelletised manure and use fish and seaweed solutions regularly over the plants to keep them in good health. It’s not too late to put some in if you haven’t done so already. Vegetables Plant beetroot, silverbeet, broad beans, onions, spring onions, peas, carrot, kohlrabi, lettuce, radish, turnip, capsicum, celery, beans, garlic, leeks, parsnip, peas, potatoes, sweet potato, tomato, broccoli, parsley, cabbage, cauliflower and coriander. Flowers Plant alyssum, marigold, petunia, calendula, cineraria, cornflower, dianthus, hollyhock, kale, lobelia, pansy, phlox, Iceland poppy, primula, snapdragon, statice, stock, sweet pea (seedling), viola, carnation, cyclamen, foxglove, gaillardia, salvia, sunflower and verbena.
Little Ashton Ruddle has big plans for his giant pumpkin. In a new competition category, giant pumpkins will make their debut in the produce section of the Maleny Show, to be held on May 31 and June 1. Ashton hopes his pumpkin will be big enough to win him a prize. With giant pumpkin growing becoming a popular pastime, show organisers are calling on anyone who has one of these massive marrows to be like Ashton and enter it in the show. Any type of fruit and vegetable produce listed in the show’s competition sections can be entered. Entries will be accepted at the Maleny Showgrounds on Wednesday, May 29 (3-5pm) or Thursday, May 30 (7.30-10am). To see the categories available, just go to the show website – www. malenyshowsociety.org.au/ produce.pdf – to see which section takes your fancy. There are specific sections for kids, so why not get them involved in the local show. For more information call the show office on 5494 2008.

Sport Success at school swimming championships Darcy Higgins, Sam Atkinson, Jaymes Roser and Bill Atkinson, who are all coached by Brenden Roser and train at Maleny, represented the Sunshine Coast at the recent 2019 State Swimming Championships. Months of hard work came to fruition with the boys achieving personal bests and competing in a combined total of 22 events. Darcy and Sam both reached the 12 years finals, with Darcy placing fifth in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke and Sam eighth in the 100m butterfly. Darcy also placed fifth in the 200m individual medley and 14th in the 100m backstroke. Jaymes and Bill were part of the 13 years 200m freestyle relay team, which took out the bronze medal, and swam side-by-side in the 100m freestyle, placing 14th and 15th. Jaymes placed 17th in the 50m breaststroke, with Bill 11th in the 200m individual medley and 14th in the 50m butterfly. The boys couldn't have achieved these amazing results without the dedication and commitment of their coach Brenden, who inspired and motivated them. There is always a sense of fun and a love of swimming when they train. Here's to reaching their swimming goals in 2020!

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Tension was palpable on Thursday as a battle of the sexes was promoted. On lawn one Gillian Bradley and Brenda Winter put a nail in the coffin of male supremacy by thrashing Gary Winter and Wallace Roy 7–3 and 7-5 in two games of golf croquet. Fortunately, Nick Cram and Ken Barker paired up on lawn two to give a timely lesson in the fine art of association croquet to Donna Manning and Sarah Widin defeating them 15–9 due mainly to some fine grafting play by Nick to restore the balance somewhat. On the weekend Donna and Ken played in the Stephens’ Easter Handicap tournament held at Stephens Club in Yeronga. It was a very enjoyable tournament despite some heavy falls of rain on Saturday. Kathie Grant from Southport Club won the event, Lindsay David of Graceville Club was runner up and Barbara Northcott from Southport Club won the Y section. This is a most enjoyable tournament and gives players of all levels an opportunity to compete with each other. Thanks to Stephens Club for hosting it. Rain meant no play on Sunday. Ken Barker and Nick Cram played the first round of the Lochwood Shield competition on Wednesday visiting the Nambour club on a soggy day. Ken played Bill Habner winning 21–7 and Nick played Eileen Kleiberg winning 14–13 in the singles. In the afternoon Bill and Eileen turned the tables winning a game that could have gone either way right up to the last shot 19–12. It was a good start to the season for the Range, winning
the round two games to one. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showground from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Playing times for play days on Thursdays and Sundays are 1pm for games to begin at 1.30 pm. Vist our website https://rangecroquetatmaleny.org.au. For details contact president Vince Carbery 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers 5494 3555.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Jim King A couple of weeks of rain and what do you get, no bowls! Great to see the countryside so green but we couldn’t see our greens during the week for water. Our monthly inter-club jackpot pairs, Tuesday bowls and Wednesday barefoot bowls were all washed out. Thankfully, the skies were grey but dry on Friday and 15 bowlers enjoyed returning to scroungers. Grinning winners were Dennis Kyling, Richard Bond, Curley Peterson, Ian Spence (great come from behind and first win) and Mike Edwards. The current scroungers competition will finish on June 14 with finals on June 21 so still plenty of opportunity to get onto the prize list. Each Friday we have our members draw and
money board at 5pm, so come down to the club to enjoy good company and a quiet drink and maybe win a night out. This week Warwick Mills ventured inside from his favourite corner seat and won the $25 money board and the Brouhaha voucher – definitely worth the effort. Jim King was present to win the $25 voucher from Maple Street Meats. Thanks to our sponsors Brouhaha and Maple Street Meats. This week, rain gods willing, we have Tuesday bowls at 9am for 9.30am start, Wednesday barefoot bowls 6pm for 6.30pm start and Friday scroungers 2pm for 2.30pm start. New bowlers always welcome at any of these events and bowls and coaching are available. Just come along and you will be made most welcome.
Contributed by Pauline Fraley The Wikings played hard but unfortunately were not able to defeat a very strong Gympie team. The tennis was good and the company great as always. Witta had some very close tie breaker sets that unfortunately didn't go their way. Players of the day were Glenn Smith and Paul Durham. The Wikings are looking forward to meeting Gympie at home on hard courts later in the season. The Wagtails were washed out. Whistlers played at Maroochydore against the Meteors. It was very cloudy weather, so we tried to play as many sets as we could. We had a lot of deuces at every game with lots of rallies, so it took longer to finish every set. It was great tennis and everyone enjoyed it, especially as this was the first match after the break. We couldn't finish three sets because of rain but the score was very tight. We didn't get a win but had a nice day. Score was 25-28 games, 2-3 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. The Wildcats were at home against Caloundra Skylarks. Thankfully the weather held. The tennis was great and both teams threw everything they had at each other. With two sets to go the score was even. Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Michelle Macaree fought very hard and were victorious at the end. Score was 5-3 sets and 39-36 games. Social tennis: Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm. All welcome. Court bookings 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

ARIES March 21 - April 20
Several planets in the earthy, practical sign will spend a good piece of the month in your sector of finances and personal possessions. So all the Arians will turn their attention towards their financial and material matters. Within the next few days an offer you were not expecting could find you doing what you have always wanted to do! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Most of your life you have never needed any help attracting admirers. However, this month your charms will be especially lethal! The love planet Venus herself will pass through your sign turning you into a veritable magnet for the attention of others. Keep in mind, however, that Uranus, also in your sign, says relationships are unpredictable. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 Take note that if your social life has been extremely busy over the past month, then you can expect that to continue during May. Your ruling planet Mercury demands a lot from you, therefore what starts as a great idea could get sidelined with half a dozen other ideas before getting out of the starting gate. Soul growth through artistry. CANCER June 24 - July 22 This month sees the company of tried and true loved ones and they will keep you busy for most of this month. However, you will hear some surprising news, even from those you think of as being steady and level headed. Be flexible as you are going to find that your exciting social plans change at the very last moment.

requires three more years for the finest results." "Correct," said the boss. A third glass ... ''It's a pinot blanc champagne, high grade and exclusive,'' the drunk said calmly. The director was astonished. He winked at his secretary, secretly suggesting something sinister. She left the room and came back in with a glass of urine. The alcoholic tried it. LEO July 23 – August 22 It would seem that the universe has a few tricks up its sleeve and that events in the weeks ahead are especially designed to snap you out of any mental or physical ruts. Several planets now move through the earthy determined Taurus sign and they will check you out if you have over extended yourself by being too frivolous. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The movement of Mars for your sign has been helpful in your business and career matters. Mars makes you have the urge to assert yourself but of course some may not appreciate that. Recent trends have seen disturbed sleep patterns. The weekend has news from long distance, also positive news in travel and legal matters. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 As relationships are generally your specialty and since your own loving planet the goddess Venus herself has been honouring your commitments since March/April, now it is passion time! So you can expect your love life to be exciting yet unpredictable at times. Watch out for someone who may be critical. Hold inner peace. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 As your sign is famous for its intensity you now have a rather special captivating month ahead, the reason being several planets make their way through your opposite sign. Each day you will have one-to-one encounters. Even early disappointments can turn out to be a day where cancellations are good for you.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 You are very lucky to keep having your ruling planet Jupiter in your own playful sign. As that planet now reverses you will see that it is important to keep your nose to the grindstone. Your reward for these efforts will be at month’s end, when other planets convince you that you are worth more than you think you are. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Several planets are now in the touch loving grounded sign of Taurus. This makes you happy with lovers and playmates and even with unpredictable Uranus there may be sudden infatuations about where you can go. The good news is that whether you are single, or attached, your love life continues to be good all month now. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 As some planets have been wearing the red-hot impulsive sign of Aries, your Aquarius sign sees a strong conversational style. This means that you present yourself honestly and with passion. The planet Uranus may give you less patience than usual but overall your mood and your direction settles on anything reasonable. PISCES February 20 - March 20 With a pack of planets in earthy, solid Taurus you are going to find that you are happy with your thoughts and all communications. Not only will you have peace of mind but some good old-fashioned peace and quiet too. The weekend sees the new Moon underscoring your determination to achieve your personal and professional goals.

The regular taster at a winery died and the director started looking for a new person to hire. A drunkard with a ragged, dirty look came to apply for the position. The director of the winery wondered how best to send him away. He gave him a glass to drink. The drunk tried it and said: "It's a muscat, three years old, grown on a north slope, matured in steel containers. Low grade, but acceptable.” "That's correct," said the boss. Another glass ... "It's a cabernet, eight years old, from a south-western slope, oak barrels, matured at eight degrees. It
