Hi Everyone
R
egular readers of GCNews know that we like to make sure that we provide a fair and even approach to the stories that we cover. And when reporting, we try not to focus on politics but on issues and keep the bias out of our stories. As an independent paper we think that is important, and as we have now entered the lead up to the next State Election, we have been making sure we remain consistent with this approach. So on Saturday afternoon when we had Andrew Powell’s Charity Cricket Game (with his team of LNP Pollies
taking on the local Maleny Maulers) at the Maleny Show Ground at the same time as the local Labor Party Environment Forum at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre we decided to go to both. I think I got the easier gig heading along to the Charity Cricket Match, fortunately I didn’t have to rely on any of my vast sporting knowledge to report on this event, photos on page 4. Brownie went to the Environment forum and his more hard-hitting story is featured on page 5. As many of the candidates for the State Election in 2015 have been announced, soon we will be starting to include profiles, and question and answer columns from them. Regards,

Mitchell will spend 12 weeks at HMAS Cerberus in Victoria completing his Recruit Training and then expects to be posted to either Perth or Sydney in the role of Boatswains Mate. His grandfather’s 20 year career in the RAAF inspired Mitchell to look to the Defence Force for his own career, finally deciding that the Navy was the best option for him. The knowledge and training that he gained as a Cadet at TS Centaur gives him a head start for his Recruit Training.

You know what they say it is all fun and games until somebody loses an eye. Well, lucky the injury sustained by the Deputy Premier, Jeff Seeny at the Charity Cricket game at Maleny on Saturday meant just seven stiches on the eyebrow line. Fortunately there was first aid at the game and Beerwah’s Doctor Dingle was also available for a quick consultation, luckily he was also on duty behind the bar as part of the days fundraising efforts. Jared Ashcroft, from J’s Sports First Aid (Maleny) who was first on scene confirmed that there was ‘heaps of blood’ and Doctor Dingle said the injury would definitely need stitching so the Deputy Premier was off to the Maleny hospital for a patch up. The incident took place at the fifth annual ‘game of backyard cricket with a difference’ which once again saw the Maleny Maulers battle it out against Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, and his celebrity team. The Deputy Premier was in the role of wicket keeper, when after a dramatic attempt to catch the ball, it clipped his gloves and bounced into his face, causing a nasty gash requiring stitches. The batsman at the time (who requested that his name not be included in the story) confirmed that at no time did his bat make any contact with the wicket keeper, and that he felt really badly for him. Apparently the batsman in question is not a regular member of the Maleny Maulers but a ring in on the day, who may not make a return visit to Maleny for the match next year.

The game was close, with only eight runs the difference, however the local team claimed victory. The match was a tribute match to honour the memory of Dr Peter Oliver who lost his battle with lung cancer in 2013. “While there is plenty of focus on Dr Oliver's legacy, match day also has a lighter side with players from both sides wearing their best pyjamas as the team uniform. This element certainly helps to bring a bit of humour to the game and ensures players and spectators have a thoroughly enjoyable day,” said Mr Powell.

Environment protection put under the microscope The State Labour Shadow Environment Minister, Jackie Trad, addressed a crowd of over 50 interested locals at an environment forum at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre last Saturday. Ms Trad and two environmental advocates – Paul Donatiu (Executive Coordinator with the National Parks Association of Queensland) and Narelle McCarthy (Liaison Officer with the Sunshine Coast Environment Council) – updated the group on the impacts and issues surrounding two local controversial State Government projects. “The current state government has instigated a major change in the philosophy of what are the core functions of national parks and other protected areas,” said Ms Trad. “Their concept that these areas should be opened for ‘commercialisation at all costs’ is a major threat to the core functions that they perform. “It’s important that national parks are there for people to enjoy and utilise, however it’s just as important that their core role remain for the protection and sustainability of the fragile plant, animal and ecological processes they contain,” stressed Ms Trad. Paul Donatiu backed up these statements saying that there had been an erosion of the cardinal principles of managing national parks. “Rather than nature conservation, the current government’s policies for looking after our environment have had commercialisation written into the stated principles of national park management,” he said.
Jackie Trad, Shadow Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection “They now have to deliver a whole suite of other outcomes … often at the expense of the fundamental values for their existence.” Mr Donatiu outlined how the Kondalilla National Park at Mapleton is under threat from a tourism ‘zip-line’ proposal through the protected reserve. “Kondalilla is the 13th most visited national park in Queensland, meaning that a lot of people come to enjoy the area for what it offers now – a peaceful experience walking through the rainforest and communing with nature. “Not only will the commercial development endanger over 20 threatened species, the visual and noise pollution caused by the infrastructure and people screaming as they fly along wires through the forest, will detrimentally affect the very reason why so many people visit Kondalilla.
That is for the tranquil and awe-inspiring natural experience,” he said. According to Narelle McCarthy, the Sunshine Coast Environment Council applauds the government for looking to establish a facility for dirt bike riders which is safe and takes illegal riders out of the national parks. “But we don’t think that the current proposal at Glenview is in any way suitable or feasible,” Ms McCarthy said. “After extensive studies and investigations, Sunshine Coast Council has published a ‘Difficult to Locate Sports Study 2009 – 2028’, and nowhere in that document do they identify that this location was in any way suitable for a motorsports park.” But the government seems to have chosen to ignore the previous work done by Council and to push through with their proposal. “Right from the start, the process used by the government has been flawed and we believe there are much more suitable and less environmentally destructive alternatives available,” explained Ms McCarthy. “We have requested, under Right to Information legislation, reports and information they have used to justify their decisions, but critically the state government has decided that they will only release limited documents. “Without seeing the relevant studies, the government’s claim that a motocross facility at the proposed site is feasible and the only option available, in our opinion just doesn’t stack up,” she said.

Cultural heritage collections 24/7 History buffs and art lovers can now access all Council-owned heritage and art collections 24 hours a day, seven days a week – thanks to new improved access through the Sunshine Coast Libraries online catalogue. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski recently launched the Art and Heritage Collections catalogue at Bankfoot House, 1998 Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains. “This new online platform, partially funded through the Heritage Levy, is the first in Queensland using the Cultural Collections and Digital Assets modules for Art and Heritage Collections in collaboration with libraries,” Cr Baberowski said. “This is a great leap forward allowing members of the public the ability to access, online, Council’s collections including the Bankfoot House Collection, Public Art Collection and the Sunshine Coast Art Collection. “Council acquired the historic Bankfoot House property in 2004 including all the contents fittings, furnishings, textiles, clothing, domestic utensils, tools and implements, documents, personal records, journals, books and photographs. “The contents date from the nineteenth to the late twentieth century, and can now be viewed on the Sunshine Coast Libraries catalogue by selecting the Art and Heritage Collections,” he said. “This is a huge piece of work and I would like to personally thank the Friends of Bankfoot House for their great assistance with the cataloguing of the Bankfoot House collection.”
Debbie Angell, Collections Curator shows Crs Rick Baberowski and Jenny McKay the new Cultural Heritage Collections Catalogue Cr Baberowski said the Arts and Heritage Collections catalogue will also showcase the Sunshine Coast Art Collection which has been acquired over many years. “As most of the collection is displayed on the walls of public and Council buildings it is great to now have these artworks available online. “In addition, Council’s public art collection will also be listed. This is the art included in buildings, infrastructure and open space within the region – the catalogue provides a way to view it all. “While Council will continue to add to the catalogue and to look at how all our collections can be placed into this forum, there is no doubt the Arts and Heritage Collections catalogue will become an excellent aid for researchers, schools, visitors and the community.” Visit Council’s library website to view the Arts and Heritage Collections catalogue.

BeeGee’s Legends in profile Allan Smerdon Two weeks ago we brought you the story of the four Beerwah-Glasshouse United Soccer Club ‘Legends’. Over the coming week’s GCNews will profile each of them – Allan Smerdon, Phil Shaw, Ken Fullerton and Alan McMaster. The Smerdon family moved from Currumbin to Glass House when Allan was a 13-years-old, where his parents – Jack and Gladys – took up pineapple farming, later expanding into macadamia’s, custard apples and avocados. Allan (pictured right with his Legends medallion) played with BeeGee’s from the club’s inception in 1968 when the Sunshine Coast Soccer Association was formed. He was the goal keeper during the heyday 1970’s era, when BeeGee’s won multiple back to back championships. “Except the final in 1972, when I broke my collarbone and Barry Fullerton had to fill in for me,” Allan explained. “Playing rugby league as a kid, I could naturally catch a ball pretty well, so I got the job of goal keeper.” His keeping was so good that he was chosen as the Sunshine Coast representative goal keeper every year until 1976. “Playing at BeeGee’s with the likes of Lyle Bryce, Phil Shaw, Norm Pringle, Mick Evans, Grant Thompson, Alan McMaster, Neil, Terry and Ian Beavis, Howard Skerman, Semi Minchev and Ken Fullerton – was an absolute pleasure,” said Allan.
“Graham Dann was the coach at the time and he was a great inspiration and mentor, especially for the younger players. “We would be working during the day on the area’s tobacco, pineapple and other farms, and train two nights a week,” he said. As well as playing, most team members coached lower grades and juniors, with Allan taking on the Under 10 and Under 16 teams. Allan stepped away from first division in 1977, and was made a Life Member of the club that year. He coached the reserve grade team in 1978. During his playing career, Allan also served on the BeeGee’s committee and on the Association committee, where he was also the official results registrar. Being handy with electrics, Allan helped wire the new ‘new’ club house, as well as having a leading hand in wiring up the flood lights when they were installed in 1977. Allan now enjoys a round of golf, and lives in Glass House Mountains with wife Bev. He remains intrinsically involved in the family farming operations, both locally and around Queensland with their orchard pruning machine contracting services.

She’ll be right, Vegemite When Cyril Callister invented vegemite in 1922 as a way to exploit vitamin B rich yeast being dumped by breweries after the brewing process, I wonder if he ever imagined that someone would use it to paint his portrait. Local artist Julie Gould did just that and much more. In fact Julie has been so successful using vegemite as a painting medium that she has been invited to be the sole artist on display at an exhibition of Australian Inventions and Icons to be held at the Port of Yamba Historical Society this December/January.

The exhibit, called ‘The Whizzes of Oz’ will run for six weeks from December 6, and for the first week Julie will be in attendance, giving live displays of her portrait painting using vegemite. “This exhibition is an exploration of our nation’s most ingenious Whizzes and how they turned a bright idea into a clothesline, a lawn mower, Vegemite, the pacemaker, dual flush toilets and even mousetraps,” she said. Why vegemite? Julie studied as a commercial artist in the 80’s in Adelaide and one of her assignments required the students to pick a medium other than paint to work with. It could be red wine, chocolate, berries, anything at all, so Julie chose vegemite. She never stopped. The results have a wonderful sepia tone to them and are quite extraordinary. She particularly likes to do portraits, and has painted people's babies, their pets and even their homes. The vegemite can be used straight from the tube or mixed with water to create various shades. The work is sealed with a clear sealer to preserve it - some of her paintings date back from the 80’s and are still in perfect condition. Julie’s passion for her work is very evident and she is happy to share it with others. She holds art classes and can arrange private viewings of her work at her studio in Beerwah. She also paints with coffee beans and likes to use items like glass beads to add a three dimensional element to her work. Although she started her career as a graphic artist for advertising agencies in Adelaide, life
Julie featured on the cover of GCNews in 2011 has taken Julie all over our country. For the last six years she has been based in Beerwah, with her son. She also runs a driver training business called Beerwah U Beaut and says she loves teaching young people how to be safe on the road. Her caring nature is evident through her work as a foster carer for children as well. Much of her work can be seen displayed at Café 8 in Landsborough. This is a lovely little shop next to the BP so pop in for a great coffee, some yummy treats and a little look. The work displayed here is also available for purchase, and it is possible to have work commissioned to your requirements. Julie can be contacted via email at beanart@ netaccess.com.au or on mobile 0438 643 403.

Ride2Work Day
Glass House Mountains artist and silversmith, Melanie Augustin has just been announced as a finalist in the Australian Etsy Design Awards. The piece she has been nominated for is a gorgeous origami crane sculpted and cast into sterling silver and sold under her label ‘Kimono Reincarnate’. As a finalist, she has the chance to win a trip to New York to visit the Etsy headquarters, a prize she would dearly love. “I just love origami cranes. I love how a simple square piece of paper can be folded into a message of peace, love, health and longevity,” Melanie says. “The story of Sadako and the 1000 Cranes was my first emotional connection to Japan, a country which later I would call home for six years.” The time Melanie spent living in Japan has had a strong influence on her work. Traditional symbols and kimono textiles are a common theme in her jewellery.

GMAN unveils new tourism signage
Tibetan master visiting Glass House Mountains
For some years both visitors and locals have wondered about the faded and unreadable signage in local parks in both Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains. Not anymore! The information on the old boards, and in particular the walking tracks, has been updated to reflect the current available walking opportunities. The local information on flora, fauna and history cannot be missed because of the colourful photographs, all from the local area. The history of the signage goes back to 2001 the Centenary of Federation year, when Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network received grants

Edwin Mens (GMAN), Debbie Koost (Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre), Gwen Malcolm (GMAN), Colleen Clarke (Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre) and Bev Dooley (Sunshine Coast Destinations) are impressed with the new sign
to build both the Trachyte Circuit and the walking /cycle track which connects Glass House to Beerburrum towns. The sign boards were erected at the same time, as part of the projects. Over the years deterioration of the art work meant they were almost unreadable. We are proud to provide this replacement signage as a service to tourism in the area. This November marks 25 years of environmental and community work for GMAN. We hope to continue to work with National Parks to improve walking and eco tourism projects in the Glass House Mountains and surrounding area.
Today, Dzogchen Master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu is the supreme presentday representative of the tradition of the Dzogchen (Great Perfection) Teachings. This ancient teaching is also referred to as ‘Mind Yoga of Great Ease’ which can help to direct people towards a natural condition of non-violence, compassion and kindness. For 50 years he has delivered the message that it is possible to live harmoniously, even in the midst of chaotic, modern daily life and to lead a lifestyle that is relaxed, collaborative and peaceful. An ancient text, known in the Tibetan Language as the Rigpai Khujug and translated as ‘Cuckoo of Awareness’, will be introduced between October 20 and 26 at Namgyal Gar North. This site is the main base of the Dzogchen Community in Australia and is adjacent to the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout and nearby Lookout Cafe. The Rigpai Khujug is one of the first Dzogchen texts translated into the Tibetan language many centuries ago and is still as fresh and relevant for us today as when it was written. For further information, go to the tour website http://www.dzogchenretreat 2014.com or phone Arnaud on 0478 805 221.

In December 2009 The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains invited the men of Glasshouse Country to meet at the Beerwah Community Hall. The group was asked to select a team to explore various options, and investigate the support systems available, to build a new men’s group. The Rotary Club followed up on a previous discussion with the manager of the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre, to examine the possible usage of the workshop, gardens and the markets area managed by Community Recycling Inc. (CRI). The proposal was also encouraged by council. Another meeting was held in January, the decision to gather again in February, the men to inspect the facilities on offer by CRI, and determine if the information gathered and the venue would work. By this stage interest from about 40 men had been received. February 2010 saw the Men’s Shed gathering each Wednesday with an average attendance of 15 to 20 men attending. A partnership had now been forged. The first AGM was held in June with incorporation being put in place. Up to this point the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains Inc. was carrying the insurance, as this was still a Rotary project. Now the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed Inc. is a standalone entity. The GCMI promotional group visited and addressed other community service groups like the Beerwah Lions Club. These groups provided the base funding for the Men’s Shed to begin acquiring new tools and equipment GCMI requires to support its members. In the past four years, members have come and gone, but the partnerships remained strong. In early 2014 the decision was made by the men to seek their own premises. After several options and discussion with other partners, and Sunshine Coast Council, a proposal was put forward by Glasshouse Country Care Assoc. Inc.

The shed is currently operating on Wednesdays from 8.30am with the intention of being available for new activities five or six days per week in the near future. GCMI offers wood work (both hand and lathe), leather work, whip making, small engine repairs and most of all, a chance for a chat, a cuppa, and to meet a great mob of blokes. The men, in partnership with the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group, conducted a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Morayfield on Father’s Day. The team was also assisted by Jamie Whincup to promote Prostate Cancer awareness and raise $1,358.00. A cheque was presented at the GCMI gathering this week. With members from Beachmere and Elimbah, to Mooloolah, and all stops in between, the men invite you to check us out. Visit us at the shed at 352 Peachester Road Beerwah or give Bob a call 0427 606 240. We’d like to see you at the Shed some time, and you may soon be another partner.

The Principal of the firm, Jens Staermose is both a certified practicing accountant (CPA) and chartered tax advisor (CTA), the peak designation available to tax professionals in Australia. With over 35 years of experience, Jens brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge to his practice. Jens has a natural affinity for numbers which began in early childhood when as a six-year-old in Denmark he would assist his parents at their general store - often helping tally up customer orders which he found easy even at such a young age. He has always had an interest in numbers and went on to study a M.B.A at Aarhus University in Denmark. This study was followed by international work as an economist and financial manager in Denmark, Egypt and Singapore. Jens came to Australia in 1983 and settled originally in Rockhampton before moving over to the Northern Territory in 2001 after a two year stint as manager of an accounting practice in Vanuatu. Whilst in Rockhampton he studied and obtained a Graduate Diploma of financial management from the University of New England in 1986.

With his vast experience, Jens can help build your wealth
and security with a clear and practical plan. He is always happy to be a point of contact for clients for financial queries or to act as a financial ‘sounding board’. On Thursday, October 2, three members of the ManUP for prostate cancer ‘on the road’ team will be visiting the Masonic Temple at Caloundra in two classic vintage dodge vehicles. With prostate cancer accounting for approximately 30% of cancers diagnosed in Australian men every year, the visit marks the second last stop in an awareness campaign that has seen the team visit 40 towns across 5170km in just 37 days. The aim of this endeavour has been to help to raise the public awareness of prostate cancer, its detection, treatment and the need for a better program of support for men living with this disease. Richard White, member of the Tibrogargan Masonic Lodge is keen to help promote the event. “Having a close family member go through the challenges of prostate cancer, it’s great to see the awareness of this illness being raised, which can also assist in funding for further research and carers,” he said.
The third Thursday is reserved for the monthly general meeting and the next meeting’s guest speaker will be Jocelyn Morgan. Visitors are welcome to attend at 1.30pm on Thursday, October 16. Jocelyn is the proud owner of an amazing collection of WWI family memorabilia and her Powerpoint presentation will be ‘J G Martin Postcard Collection’. The research facility, accessed through Gate 2 at the Corbould Park Racecourse, Pierce Avenue, Little Mountain, has plenty of parking and wheelchair access.
In pursuit of trivia
Contributed by Jenny Morris After partaking in our tasty meal at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, at our View Club September lunch meeting, we undertook a small trivia test. There was certainly a lot of discussion about the questions and much was learnt by the ladies hearing the answers. Most of our ladies were Heather Burton and Deborah Mooney
All enquiries about the group and events held are welcomed by contacting Valerie on 5437 3879, Roz on 5493 1197, or Dawn on 5492 2208. Email address is caloundrafamilyres@y7mail.com. Website is www.caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au and has a map to locate the building. Special interest groups are held in the rooms each month for members, with access to the internet, and these are, Germany, 1.00pm to 3.00pm on first Thursday, Scotland, 12.00noon to 2.00pm on second Thursday, England and Wales 1.00pm to 3.00pm on fourth Thursday. enlightened by this event. We welcomed another new member to our club and Heather Burton, our vice President, presented Deborah Mooney with her badge. This year we have had an increase in new members. We now have 45 and hope our new members enjoy our outings as well as hearing our guest speakers at our luncheons. If you wish to join our club please contact Elaine on 5493 3935 or Margaret on 5435 2172. At our luncheon on October 22 we will be having Annette Baker, the State Vice President from St Vincent de Paul, addressing us. As this is poverty week it should be an interesting topic to hear about. As a matter of interest there are 353 View Clubs Australia wide with 18,278 members all sponsoring and supporting the Smith Family.

Glasshouse Mountains Mixed Probus Club
Contributed by Valerie Machin The Qld Maritime Museum located at South Bank was our outing for September. Train was our mode of transport for the day. On alighting it was only a short walk to the Museum where we were introduced to an ex-Navy volunteer, Russell, who was our guide for the day. The first vessel we encountered was the yacht ‘Ellas Pink Lady’ which was sailed around the world by 16-year-old Jessica Watson, departing Sydney on October 18, 2009 and returning on May 15, 2010, three days short of her 17th birthday. This is very significant for us as Jessica is a Sunshine Coast resident. A tour of the ‘HMAS Diamantina’ Australia’s largest World War II Veteran took us over two hours, as we made our way through her decks and associated living quarters and machinery holds, including the impressive engine room which housed two steam driven engines. We also inspected her communications equipment and armament. All this was of particular interest to our men folk. Then later, we were really spoilt for choice with the cafes along Southbank for lunch. If you are new to the hinterland area, or recently retired, Probus might be for you. We provide opportunities to keep minds active, expand interests, build relationships and enjoy the fellowship of like-minded friends. We have monthly meetings, held at 10.00am on the second Wednesday of each month at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. If you would like more information please phone Val Machin on 5494 1406.

Doing Business
You Said It
Chamber gets behind Celebrations
Send your letter to email: editorial@gcnews.com.au fax: 5438 7446 post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519
The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce President Ken Bannister said the Chamber is playing an active role in the organisation of the Beerwah Celebration street party, to be held on Friday, October 17 from 4.00pm to 9.00pm, in Simpson Street. “We are keen to encourage all the Beerwah businesses to raise their public profile by joining in this important event,” Ken said. Chamber members can share promotional information on the Chamber information stand. So if you are not a member, now is a great time to join, and get real value for your money. Come and join in the fun – and make sure you wear your shirts that feature your business logo, so festival goers can see what a great range of businesses are operating in our town. As part of the celebration, the organising committee have organised a raffle to raise money for ‘Need a Feed’, a local organisation which helps locals who need a hand up. By donating goods and services for the raffle, you may be able to turn the prize winners into future customers, and you are also generously supporting those in the community that need it. If you would like to donate a prize or find out more you can email us at beerwahcelebration@glasshousemountains.com.au or phone Judy on 0408 445 988 or Ilia on 0437 030 432. To find out more about the event check out our Facebook page Beerwah Celebration.
Contribution verses criticism
Some 25 years a resident of this great community, how refreshing to read Ms. Thomas’s positive views GCNews, September 24 edition Re: Beerwah RSL. For far too long now, finger pointing and non-constructive criticism has been on the increase regarding issues affecting this community. Every community has its share of problems. With more Ms. Thomas’s our community can develop into one of unity and comradery, as an example that contributing, far outweighs criticising. Thank you Ms. Thomas. The Poddydodger Peachester
Skippy Park
It is wonderful to see just how many people are using Skippy Park. There are early morning walkers, early morning cyclists, mums and bubs, dogs walking with their well-trained owners, kids teaching dads to be kids again, athletes of all shapes, sizes and degrees of fitness, get fit groups, serious cyclists, birthday parties and barbecue lunches, even the kangaroos approve and can be seen bounding across the field at different times. The council are to be congratulated on their vision in creating this little piece of paradise. Now, if only we could convince those few misguided users to use the rubbish bins that are provided then all would be perfect in Skippy Park. Margaret Rouhan Beerwah

Spring has sprung and some of you may be looking forward to the heat, but I’m getting nostalgic for the cool weather already! September 1 to 6 was Queensland Small Business Week and the state government got behind promoting small businesses with a buy local message. To wrap up the week I had fun on the checkouts at our local IGA with our local member Andrew Powell. Thanks Rob Outridge and your checkout team for putting up with us! Lisa Blainey-Lewin presented our Twitter workshop which was well attended by those wanting to enter or learn more about the Twitterverse, this was held at the fantastic new shop Pallet Life, check them out. Our Networking Breakfast this month was held at the Participants of the recent Twitter workshop new look Maudy’s Bistro and Bar at Witta. Our theme was celebrating some of our local business legends with great presentations from Col – Colin James Fine Foods; Shane – Concept IT; Ross – Maleny Dairies; Karen – Maple Street Co-op and Ann – Rosetta Books. This was a packed house and great breakfast and we’ll definitely be celebrating our local legends again in 2015.

Thanks for your coverage of the Maleny NBN Info session of Wednesday, September 17. Your article finishes by stating that NBN/Ericsson will come to Beerwah sometime soon. The residents of Maleny want to give you some hints about how to deal with the question of 30/40 metre towers on your landscape if they are deemed to be put near your homes. We have identified at least seven sites where NBN plans towers in our district. They will not give us exact locations as they have not yet indicated they have signed contracts. This makes it very difficult for landholders who are now kept up in the air over sites. All of this in a district that thrives on tourism. We know the sight of giant towers will degrade our landscape and tourism - apart from all the other issues. One thing Beerwah and Peachester residents need to get clear is that NBN/ Ericsson will not put towers on state govt, federal or council land as this is too complicated for insurance issues in the contracts. (Yes, if you accept a tower on your land you have to take out future liability insurance, and you cannot sell your land later without NBN's okay to do so). Please take care when residents start receiving letters from NBN (or Auricon company) asking you to accept their request to put a tower on your land. Investigate them thoroughly and ask many questions or otherwise you can be stuck in contracts with NBN that you will not get out of for 20 years. Maleny is in the midst of its campaign to give us a better deal than giant protruding tower eyesores across our lands. Ask for fibre and cable, not towers. Richard Giles Conondale

School News Primary Pyjama Day
When you combine fun with an important cause – the mixture has to be a success. That’s what happened on the last day of term for Glasshouse Country Christian College primary students. Students and teachers wore pyjamas to school to raise money for The Pyjama Foundation. The children were ‘fined’ for being out of uniform and asked to bring a gold coin donation towards the cause. At the end of the day, staff and students had raised $520.40. The Pyjama Foundation screens and matches volunteers to children in care to help them by reading together, playing educational games and working on numeracy skills. Volunteers are called Pyjama Angels and each Angel spends 15 hours with the same child every

Mooloolah School - The little school with a BIG heart! Each year the RI team organise the schools involvement in Operation Christmas Child. Students have the opportunity to fill a shoe box with gifts to be sent to children just like them
but born into less fortunate circumstances. For some children this will be the first gift they have ever received! Last year our generous school community filled 121 boxes and the students have set a target of 145 boxes this year! Several community members donated completed boxes to school last year and we’d welcome anyone who would like to donate a completed box or items to go into the student’s boxes. The boxes need to contain something to love, wear, play with, for hygiene, for school and something special. If a business would like to sponsor the cost of a box, each box costs $9.00 to post. Please leave any donations at the school office by October 15. Each year the students get to reflect on the verse in Acts 20:35 that ‘it is more blessed to give than to receive’ and this is a great way to appreciate that we have so much and can be a blessing to those in need. For more information call Fiona Cran 0411 306 838 or check out the website http://operationchristmaschild. org.au/
New veggie garden underway Hannah and Carla from Goodstart Glasshouse had organised for some veggies, fruit trees and some materials to be donated to the centre from Caloundra Bunning’s. They wanted to build a vegetable and fruit area for the children and families to enjoy and to also teach the children how to grow their own produce, and to learn what skills they needed to acquire to help achieve this. Through correspondence from the staff at the centre and Howard from Bunnings in Caloundra we were able to obtain some fruit trees, vegetables and herbs, as well as the equipment needed to build a garden bed.
Howard and the staff then organised for a day to plant all the items into the bed. Howard and his friend Jan came out last Thursday and planted the plants and trees with the children. Howard and Jan talked about what the children needed to do to look after the plants and explained how often to water them. They also donated some garden gloves for the children to assist with looking after the plants. The children are very excited about their new garden and plants and cannot wait to watch their plants grow and to taste them.

Since taking over the long standing corner cafe earlier this year, Mellum Munchies owners Shayne and Bronwyn are enjoying great local support for their business. They’re fast getting a reputation for their tasty burgers and friendly staff, with customers returning to enjoy the good hearty burger size and homemade patties. A veggie option is on the menu and the chicken fillet and chicken schnitzel are popular burger favourites. Open seven days a week from 9.00am until 7.30pm, great lunch and dinner options are available, including a variety of hot dishes, seafood and freshly made to order sandwiches. The cafe offers a number of refreshing drink options including the summer favourite slurpies and the ever popular milkshake. Coming up soon is a plan to trial an ‘outback chicken’ and chips combo, with specially prepared chicken seasoned with a blend of herbs and spices from a local supplier. Phone through orders are always welcome and can provide an easy dinner pickup option on the way home. 5494 1349.

RV limited facilities camping update
Great news! Council recently voted unanimously in support of the Limited Facilities Camping – Interim Policy. Council will now meet with the various management committees to gauge interest from potential providers of limited camping facilities. The interim policy will guide the management of RV limited facilities camping during the next 12 months, allowing for development of a comprehensive regional Drive Tourism Plan. This interim policy will be reviewed at the end of this period to determine how well it is meeting both user and community needs. I thank all stakeholders for your patience and look forward to working with you to help develop new and sustainable opportunities in this increasingly important drive tourism market.
Glass House Mountains and Glenview State School P&Cs
I was pleased to recently meet with the principals and P&C members at Glass House Mountains and Glenview State Schools to discuss how council can better support our local schools. Glenview raised some issues around the local roads, street parking and growth of the region in general, while Glasshouse has a major challenge in fundraising for air conditioning for classrooms. Like many of our country schools, both have very active Parents and Citizens (P & C) Associations and I encourage all parents and citizens interested in the welfare of the school to attend and lend a hand.
Sunshine Coast Radio Control Car Club
I had the pleasure of visiting the Sunshine Coast Radio Control Car Club at Landsborough, which I believe is one of only two competition-size racing car tracks in SE Queensland. The Club is seeking funding to resurface the track so they can continue to provide a quality experience for members and visitors. In the past, council assisted with the club’s driver’s stand, which provides excellent views of the track layout. The club is conveniently located adjacent to the skate and sports precinct in Landsborough. This friendly club welcomes visitors to their fortnightly race meetings, so if you’ve never seen these scale model cars race, then please consider going along. Visit their website at www.scrccc.com for details.
Jenny McKay
Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 New pathways at Mooloolah Valley
Work will soon start on pathway improvements at Dorson Drive, Mooloolah Valley. It’s scheduled to take place during the September school holidays and completed in two weeks, weather permitting. Remember, pathways are shared by pedestrians, cyclists and other wheeled devices, so always be careful when walking.
A Christmas tree for Mooloolah?
I met with members of the Mooloolah Valley community Association recently with regards to a festive tree in Martin Rungert Park and also the installation of a community notice board. There are still negotiations to be had but things are looking good. The plans would involve the association installing its own festive decorations in a tree at the park in Bray Road. An LED-powered manual community board is also being considered for Bray Road, advertising public or community events. I’ll keep you posted as always as news comes to hand.
Unlocking the gate again at Hovard Road – for the moment
The locked gate at Hovard Road, Bald Knob, which was placed to deter rat-runners while Landsborough-Maleny Road works are carried out, has been re-opened on a trial basis. Council will monitor the situation. The road works should be completed by November.
Sunshine Coast Heritage Plan
I was privileged as Chair of the Sunshine Coast Heritage Reference Group to run a recent workshop, to make a start on determining what recent achievements in heritage work could be included in a new Sunshine Coast Heritage Plan. A number of councillors and key staff came together and we are on our way to creating this important inclusive plan. I’ll keep you up to date on its findings.
Beyond Blue in Maleny
Specialist depression management group Beyond Blue is coming to Maleny for a visit. The Beyond Blue Roadshow will be at Tesch Park in Maleny on October 16, located on Coral Street directly opposite the park. www.gcnews.com.au
Health Check Sleep problems
McCloy Dental can help solve your sleep issues. Sleep apnoea is a serious medical condition that can increase your risk of heart failure, diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure and decrease your life expectancy by eight to 10 years. Sufferers have a high incidence of headaches, reflux, and may grind their teeth and feel tired and ‘cranky’ during the day. Those with sleep apnoea, can spend 10 hours in bed, but get only one to two hours of ‘real sleep’. No-one can feel rested, or recover from any medical or health problem after that. The most common cause of sleep apnoea is a blockage of the airway during breathing while asleep. This blockage may be due to excess weight, the epiglottis or the lower jaw. Sometimes dental treatment, which changes the position of the lower jaw, or a night guard, can stop you from suffering from sleep apnoea. The ideal treatment from sleep apnoea will always be a CPAP machine. But not everyone wants to use one. Some lucky people will be in the group for whom repositioning the lower jaw will work. The difficulty is to determine who is in that group without wasting money and risking your health by investing in an appliance, which will not work for you.
Personal training equals results The benefits of personal training include results, staying motivated, keeping you accountable, teaching and correcting technique, nutritional advice and they’re efficient (great for people who ‘don't have the time’ to exercise). At Maximise Health and Fitness our Trainer’s goals are to ensure you get the results you want. They will tailor your sessions specific to your individual needs and fitness levels. So whether you want to run a marathon, lose weight, tone up for summer, rehabilitate an injury, or simply to feel better within yourself, they can design a program for you, because Personal Training is all about you. Aileen Jackson: “By having two personal training sessions per week I quickly achieved my goals, the sessions were always well focused and fun, and the trainers pushed me far beyond what I would achieve on my own. I would definitely recommend PT sessions with Maximise Health and Fitness, they must be good; my husband is now training with them as well!” So, if you're looking for a gym where the team and trainers are extremely knowledgeable and a place where they genuinely care, Maximise Health and Fitness is your gym.

Local Music Scene Music Today
Live & Local in October with Dr Micheal Whiticker
Micheal lives at Peachester and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner
Songs have words as well as music
My initial attraction to music was the sounds it made. And it was so-called classical music more than anything else that I remember from my childhood as I listened to my sisters having their weekly piano lessons. In my teens I discovered the guitar and made my first attempts at writing songs and I have no doubt the words I came up with were reasonably awful, but all that mattered to me in those days was that the song ‘sounded’ good. By my early twenties I had already had my infatuation with the blues, jazz and progressive rock and I was playing in bands creating concept albums and the words of our lyricists all sounded sub– Tolkien to me. I moved onto the study of composition and classical music at the Conservatorium in Sydney and further away from considering the role of lyrics in any songwriting I might have been doing. And it was only later, as I began to appreciate songs from the likes of Stephen Sondheim and Irving Berlin, that I became truly convinced that the music side was really only half the craft. Some musicians have come up with cheeky means for dealing with the challenge of the lyric side of their writing technique. Exploratory late 60s drummer Robert Wyatt, wrote a song called Signed Curtain in 1972 in which the lyrics began ‘This is the first verse’, which was repeated for the second line of the song. It went on to ‘This is the chorus, or perhaps the bridge, or just another part of the song that I‘m singing’. I thought that was actually very clever at the time, though being as John Cage had already written four minutes 33 seconds in which the pianist sits at the piano and does not play a note for exactly that length of time, there was a lot of clever ‘music’ being written in those days. The most sensible approach is probably that taken by Elton John. In teaming up with Bernie Taupin he had found the ideal collaborator. Working independently Bernie would craft exquisite lyrics and send them to Elton who then set them to music. It sounds easy and it worked beautifully for them. There are of course some for whom writing lyrics comes as naturally as music, but my advice for most budding songwriters is to find a collaborator – two heads have got to be better than one! Cheap Fakes – bringing back the funk
By Sonia Clark Upbeat funk loving crowd pleasers, Cheap Fakes bring their original blend of party pop, funk and reggae back up to the Sunshine Coast in October. Playing the Caloundra Music Festival, the dapper six piece live band will also headline the family friendly Beerwah Celebration on Friday, October 17 which marks the opening of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Simpson Street upgrade and start of the 2014 Glasshouse Country Festival. Taking their name from a line in a Neil Finn song ‘Chocolate Cake’, the band play all originals which reflect a diversity of influences not limited to any one genre. Citing a range of musical influences ranging from Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin through to Miles Davis, Bob Marley and Prince, the band are all about getting the crowd up and dancing with their high energy blend of tight grooves, big build-ups and fat funk. Now Brisbane based, the band consists of main songwriter Hayden Andrews on vocals and guitar, Azza McCabe (drums and backing vocals), Scotty French (guitar, bass and vocals), and Scott Bignall (trumpet and keyboards) along with Jeremy Thomas (bass) and Joshua Apple who both originally hail from the Sunshine Coast. With two well received albums under their belt - 2010’s ‘Stones and Sticks’ and 2012’s ‘Hand Me Downs’, the band have been busy touring nationally and are currently featuring sneak peeks from their upcoming album ‘Modern Vintage’ in their live sets. Produced by Grammy nominated John Merchant (Michael Jackson, Bee Gees, Lenny Kravitz), the band originally met the renowned producer at a production workshop in Brisbane when he was touring with the Bee Gees. Slipping him one of their previous cd’s, he loved the music and thought that they had something special. Cheekily they asked if he would consider producing their next album and the band were blown away when a few months later he agreed to come back out to Australia after his North American tour and produce ‘Modern Vintage’. Recorded at the Sunshine Coasts’ Heliport Studios earlier this year, the album is set for release in early 2015. Get your groove on and check out their local gigs. www.cheapfakes.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

Happenings Out and About in Glasshouse Country Blooms, glorious blooms The air in the Beerwah Community Hall was heavy with an overabundance of exotic scents and aromas last Friday and Saturday when the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society hosted their annual orchid show. One spectator was overheard saying that the sight and smell rivalled that of Singapore Airport, where intoxicating displays of orchids are renowned. The dazzling floral exhibits at Beerwah were celebrated by the crowds of onlookers who came from far and wide to marvel at the efforts of the nine attending orchid clubs and societies. Our local club – the Glasshouse Country Orchid Society – took out the prestigious first place overall prize, showing once again that our local orchid growers are amongst the best around.

Chicks in the Sticks high tea The hauntingly magical sound of the harp will combine with the tinkle of fine china and the excited chatter of ladies enjoying high tea at Yabbaloumba Retreat near Kenilworth on Sunday, October 19. Harpist Dr Judy Flieter will perform at the pink-themed high tea where guests will have a wonderful afternoon while at the same time raising money for research into breast cancer. The high tea, which has established itself as a must attend event on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland calendar, has proven so popular that the number of guests has to be limited so it is vital you get in early to book your tickets. The very talented ladies of the Kenilworth Quilt and Craft group have made a ‘must-have’ quilt to be raffled on the day and there is also a large, popular multi draw raffle. The huge charity auction is a real crowd pleaser thanks to the generosity of people and businesses who support the high tea which is in its fourth year. There will also be prizes for the best dressed table, best hat and many more. Just about everyone goes home with a treat. Tickets are $39.00 each and can be purchased now from Lolie Murtagh 54460 0222 or Kelli Hoyes 5446 0155 or 5446 0598.

Plant of the month
Wild May
Leptospermum polygalifolium Glass House Mountains is home to many species of Leptospermum including a number that are rare. Leptospermum polygalifolium is one of the more common plants found in both dry heath, eucalypt forest and in moist wallum areas. A medium sized shrub to about 3 metres, Wild May has smooth bark, soft green leaves with rounded points and five petalled white flowers. Prolific flowering occurs in spring between September and November. The flowers are followed by woody fruit which are often said to resemble small hot cross buns! They remain on the plant for a considerable period of time, but once picked will open and disperse the fine seed within days. Leptospermums make ideal garden plants and can be purchased from the GMAN nursery.

Get up&Grow with Jade King
Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening
The productive patch
New season vegetables are beginning to appear on our family dinner table and as usual, they are being greeted with excitement. I’m not sure if it 100% excitement for the actual new season vegetable itself, or just excitement that it is a change from the months of winter vegetables. Either way, our family is beginning to relish fresh tender beans, golden button squash and zucchini, and just around the corner are some cucumber, tomato, new potatoes and corn. The mid-season and year-round veggies such as beetroot, silverbeet and cherry tomatoes will continue to be present at meals, as will the stored potatoes, sweet potato and pumpkins. The first month of spring has delivered some beautiful growing weather along with some timely showers and it would seem everyone is keen to get into creating a productive garden one way or another. Many people I have been speaking with have asked the annual question: ‘How should I start my new patch?’ So whether you are starting out or your garden just needs a top up, the method that I adopt can be applied to both. If you have read my column in previous years, you would already have heard of ‘lasagna layering’, and in my personal opinion this is one of the best ways to provide a good year long supply of nutrients cheaply. My version of ‘lasagna layering’ is where the garden beds are filled predominantly with alternate layers of lucerne mulch, spent mushroom compost and manure as indicated in the diagram. However, if you are just topping up your garden you only need to do the top four layers. Lucerne mulch is regularly available at the local produce store and we are fortunate to be living within scenic driving distance of a couple of mushroom farms that are more than willing for you to buy their spent mushroom compost. An added bonus of the mushroom compost is that you are more than likely to gain a few fresh mushrooms as your first harvest! When it comes to the manure layer, anything you can get your hands on is great. However, if you can’t get your hands on some fresh manure, an alternative is to use dynamic lifter or other pelletised manure based fertiliser. You will only need to scatter this across as your layering and make up the bulk with the lucerne mulch.
Once your garden is filled, it helps to leave it settle for about two weeks and then plant seedlings or seeds into pockets of compost. It’s a great idea to use this waiting time to raise some seedlings of your own to plant in. Hope you gain some inspiration to start up a patch or continue to tackle the challenges, as the reward of fresh organic vegetables is great! Until next time in Get Up and Grow!
Jade likes her family to be able to live as self sufficiently as possible from her garden and she loves to share her knowledge with others. www.gcnews.com.au

The parable in Matthew 20: 1-16 of the landowner who pays those who began working at 5.00pm the same as those workers who have toiled all day seems to disregard any sense of fairness or justice. But as the landowner himself asks, is what he does unjust? No one received less than what was agreed. What this parable gives us is another insight into God’s overwhelming generosity. The Lord teaches us that God’s goodness invites all people into his presence. What is important in the parable is not how long they have worked but that they answered the call when it came. The landowner in the parable does not compare one group of workers with another. They were all paid because they answered the call. The same is true with us. The Lord doesn’t

compare us with each other. Each of us has a unique combination of talents, challenges and opportunities in life. The problems and opportunities may be the same as those of others, but the combination is always unique, and the human heart that must carry them must walk its own path. The mix of burdens and graces we experience are never exactly identical to anyone else’s. Others will follow in their way so let’s not be too quick to compare. What is asked of us may be a friendly smile, a hand of kindness or a word of forgiveness. It will never be more than what we are able to provide. What the Lord asks of us is that we follow Him with whatever we have and as best we can. What could be fairer than that?

Bright sparks Two factory workers are talking. The woman says, "I can make the boss give me the day off." The man replies, "and how would you do that?" The woman says, "just wait and see." She then hangs upside down from the ceiling. The boss comes in and says, "what are you doing?" The woman replies, "I'm a light bulb." The boss then
Your Stars LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The solar emphasis of the full Moon in Aries on October 8 places a strain on partnerships. There will be a need for change and to embrace the new. However, doing so may come at the cost of upsetting the status quo. As usual don’t pull out your ‘bull in the china shop’ attitude just show leadership skills. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You have this week a solar eclipse in Aries in your private sector of your chart. Too much time spent focusing on problems and self-doubt may cause a mild depression. Self-examination may be called for, which is clever of you at all times, but don’t carry it to an extreme. Resolve to drop bad habits, release guilt. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 There is an eclipse coming up in the fire sign of Aries by October 8. You will find it matches perfectly with your sign being Sagittarius and Mercury, and Venus also being in the air sign of Libra. This means like minded others help you reach your dreams. A lot of fun hanging out with congenial buddies! CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The full Moon eclipse this week by October 8 is a cardinal sign pushing you to the limits of endurance and patience, perhaps triggering a very bumpy new start or a disruptive change. Try to be a crusader of the noblest kind. Now is the time to network and forge beneficial partnerships to serve you well in the future.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The month will open with you bouncing happily along as if you are on a trampoline. Have fun with groups into travel, overseas safaris and seeing live theatre productions. You should join associations of humanitarian vision. With Mars in Sagittarius this eclipse in Aries allows you to fire on all eight cylinders! PISCES February 20 – March 20 Just be careful that this full Moon on October 8 does not set off a risky or reckless move with possessions, edged on by jealous resentment. It is the time for Piscean crusades and you may see some way in your state affairs that gives benefit to humanitarian causes. You find ways to increase your business income. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week, in fact this month, is fuelled by the Lunar Eclipse on October 8 in your sign of Aries. It reaches maximum velocity because the planet Uranus is in your sign also. This may produce some rebelliousness and it could possibly change your life in the blink of an eye with a world adventure or crusade. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This week the solar emphasis is in your sector of work, health and service. Partners and pets come under this heading and so you will take care of their everyday needs. Make sure you are balancing a hectic work time with enough personal rest time. Your ruler, Venus, challenges Pluto putting you on edge now.
GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This month will start off with the Sun and Venus in sweet romantic Libra, in your zone of love, pleasure, creativity and children. You will take the lead in romance and you will want to do all you can for your loved ones. The full Moon eclipse on October 8 can generate huge excitement in your personal life. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This could be a week, and even a month, where the eclipse of the full Moon on Wednesday will remind you for the rest of the year that you are in the cross hairs of trouble in professional and domestic relationships. However you may shine at work and earn good money from it. Avoid guilt, remorse or jealousy. LEO July 23 – August 22 The full Moon on October 8 sets things off to a lively chart. Especially where future plans and travel is involved. Something shocking or ground breaking is afoot in your life. Be careful what you may think or say as people are on edge with their long held beliefs which are being shattered now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This month there is a solar eclipse with the full Moon emphasis in your economic base. This will impact your personal income, possessions, profits, buying and selling. You will achieve the greatest success by revitalising your old possessions and getting desired objects off for cash sales. Definitely a new start.
