Hi everyone You know when people are happy to be seen playing golf in their pyjamas on the front page of the paper then they are definitely dedicated to the cause. And what cause would require people to play golf in their flannelette pyjamas? The Beerwah High Chaplaincy program, that’s what. As this vital service provided to Beerwah State high school students needs to generate the funds to continue each year, they organise a range of fund raisers including this annual Beerwah Supa IGA Chaplaincy Golf Classic. The golf event is being held on Sunday, June 27 at the Beerwah Golf Course, with hit off from 12.00noon. The format is a four-ball ambrose and the cost is $50.00 per person,

including brunch. Deadline for registering is this Friday, June 18 – details are on page 3. And if golfing is not your style but motorbikes are, you might want to think about supporting the Chaplaincy program at their ‘Ride For Chappy’ to be held on August 28. I have to say a big thank you to the Flannelettes who took our suggestion to be photographed ‘warming up’ for golf in its more literal sense.

Supa IGA golf chaplaincy hits the mark How much for a game of golf with one of the world’s best? Well, that’s up to you to decide, with the opportunity to play golf with Ian Baker Finch just one of the hot items up for grabs at the charity auction at the Beerwah Supa IGA Chaplaincy Golf Classic later this month. Other prizes, including a cap autographed by surfing legend Joel Parkinson, are sure to get the bids going at the auction, which will be a fitting conclusion to an action packed day on the green to raise funds for the Chaplaincy service at Beerwah State High. Event organiser Warwick Moody said there was a fantastic response to this year’s charity golf day, with at least 18 teams expected to line up for the shotgun start at 12.00noon on Sunday, June 27. “This year we’re proud to announce a new perpetual team trophy sponsored by Westpac to really heat things up,” Warwick said. Warwick said the support for the Beerwah Supa IGA Chaplaincy Golf Classic, an annual event, was growing, in recognition of the importance of the role of local school Chaplain, Mike Turner. “Mike does a fantastic job with the kids at Beerwah High, he plays such an important role, and it’s great to see the local community really get behind this year’s event and help support such a worthy cause.”

Warwick said around 50 businesses were involved in this year’s event, and welcomed any other business keen to lend their support. Debunking the flu myth

Winter is setting in and the season for illness is well underway, as many of us can attest to. Recent surveys have shown that one in five Australians will not be having flu vaccinations this year, for fear they might get sick from the shot.

GCNews took to the street last week to find out what you thought about the flu vaccination.

Dr Ron Bond from Beerwah Surgery said it was important that people understood that there is no live virus in the vaccine. Twenty years ago it was a different situation, but today, the flu shot is an inactivated, purified vaccine, he said. “You can’t get the flu from the vaccine,” Dr Bond said. The reaction that people sometimes get after being immunised is due to the body recognising the antigen in the vaccine, and this generally doesn’t last more than a day or two.” Dr Bond recommended the flu shot for anyone Mischa and Blair Josey, Beerwah I haven’t had the flu shot yet this year, but I have had the Swine Flu vaccine. It’s important for immunisation, anything to help limit the sickness to your children.

Lisa Milgate, Beerwah I don’t plan on getting the flu shot. I don’t get sick; I don’t usually get the flu, so it’s not a priority for me.

Michael Mace, Beerwah I’ve had the flu shot, over the last four or five years I’ve had few of them. I wouldn’t recommend them and I wouldn’t not recommend them. The meningococcal one is the one I’m mainly interested in.

Charity Sports - the blame game continues By Lea Parkes

Last week GCNews brought you the announcement that the Beerwah Charity Sports Day was not going ahead for this year. The organising committee was disappointed with the lack of communication from Council regarding their concerns and the progress that had been made by Council in completing the necessary infrastructure. In Mark McArdle’s column, in the same edition, he also expressed his concern at the possibility that pennypinching on Council’s behalf could lead to the end of a great tradition – the Beerwah Charity Sports Day. This week Council has contacted GCNews requesting that we print the following statement to clarify the situation. Sunshine Coast Council's Transport and Engineering Services Manager, Brian Peebles said Mark McArdle was right in saying that ‘it’s not a rosy outlook but when the guts are ripped out of a proud community tradition through penny-pinching administration it’s even harder to stomach.’ “Unfortunately he has not checked all his facts,

because the responsible administration is the State Government, not Council,” Mr Peebles said. “Council has a written agreement with Queensland Rail that they would extend the culverts under the railway lines so that the Council could then construct the new access road into the sports ground. The State has walked away from the project without doing the works they had promised and without these works the road cannot be built.” Mr Peebles said council has made repeated attempts to have the State honour the agreement, but the State has done nothing. “The State made the existing entry dangerous, not Council. The State had promised to construct a part of the works needed for the new access, and Council has in good faith continued to negotiate with the State to attempt to have them honour the agreement to resolve this important issue. Perhaps Mark McArdle can use his influence to make it happen?” So we took Council’s comments back to Mark McArdle and this is what he had to say – "It concerns me that even though the event has been running for 39 years and it is historically important, that the council has never raised this issue with me. If it was an issue council has never sort my assistance and I question why this is so. I will now put pressure on QRail to get the necessary work completed."

At 193cm tall, Tim O’Shea from Beerburrum was a formidable force in rugby league for years, but when he stopped playing in 2007 he turned his sights to another lesser known sport: Strongman. Since then he’s gone from strength to strength – literally. Recently Tim qualified for the Queensland Amateur State Strongman Titles after winning the Darling Downs Strongest Man title in Toowoomba. The Queensland Strongman State Titles event, held on June 12 featured the 12 best strength athletes from around Queensland competing in events including a ute deadlift, 140kg per hand ‘farmers walk’, axle clean and press, 355kg yoke walk and 150kg Atlas Stone lifting. So how does Tim prepare for such a competition? “I train five mornings per week, heavy lifting in the gym including deadlifts, squats and various presses. Plus two other sessions per week, event training, replicating events in upcoming competitions. “People always ask what I eat too. I eat around a kilogram of meat a day, mostly chicken and steak, along with pasta, rice and vegetables. I supplement my diet with whey protein and creatine, Tim said. “I enjoy the sport because it’s a real test: it’s a test of your

strength on the day and also a test of how well you prepare over time and the weeks up to competition. Tim’s goals this year were to compete in state and national levels. “If I finish top three at the state titles, then I’ll qualify for the nationals which will mean I’ve achieved both those goals. The winner and second place getters at the nationals get an invitation to compete in the Arnold Schwarzenegger World Amateur Strongman in the US. “Over the next three to five years that would be my goal, to get that invitation, he said. Earlier this month, Tim was also invited to compete in ‘Australia’s Strongest Man’ at Lismore, and even though he finished eighth, he achieved many personal best results including a 26 tonne truck pull. Tim managed to pull the truck 10 metres in the 75 second time limit. As well as his Strongman commitments Tim works for Queensland Health as Workforce Planning Officer, does part-time security, and is a part-time student, studying accountancy and human resources. He also has a wife Jody and 10 month old son, Matthew. At the time of going to print, Tim’s results at the weekend’s state titles weren’t known. Keep an eye out for next week’s edition for all the details of his success.

Meet and greet at Nova Ford When you look at a car you know that under the hood there’s a lot more to see, and when you look at Nova Ford at Caboolture you may be surprised to know that’s there’s a lot more to them than just a ‘caryard’. Sure they sell great cars at affordable prices, sure they have a tuning service that will leave your car leaner, meaner and greener, but did you know about Nova Ford’s monthly meet and greet? Service manager John Barnes organises Nova Ford's Focus XR5 Turbo meet and greet every month. This month he has organised an open day on June 19 for all Focus XR5 Turbo owners. “It’s an opportunity for car lovers to come and check out the dealership, put their car up on a hoist and checkout what’s underneath and have open discussions about the vehicle, John said. \

Business feature

To top it off, there’s a barbeque to really relax and ‘talk cars’ with other like-minded people. John has a wealth of knowledge about these vehicles as he owns two himself, and he is more than happy to spend time helping and advising others. Car owners travel from as far as Tasmania to see John about their vehicle. So make sure you’re there! Of course, if you are in the market to buy a new or

used car then check out Nova Ford’s range of new Fords and pre-loved vehicles, with a three year warranty or 175,000km warranty and finance and insurance available to suit your needs. Nova Ford is a locally owned and operated business with a friendly team whose focus is on the individual needs of every customer. If you’re not satisfied, they’re not satisfied.

They help in many areas, including bus driving, special events and gardening. They were also instrumental in setting up Friends of Eden Inc. At the same meeting, two of the local firies gave an entertaining and informative talk about fire safety in the home. There was also a fire truck available for inspection.

Beerwah Writers Group

Contributed by Trevor McGurk It is a generally accepted fact that writing is 10 per cent inspiration and 90 per cent perspiration. This fact became evident to members as Martin Pedder described the amount of research needed to effectively write a book. It includes looking through libraries, talking to people, rewriting, and much study, making sure your facts are right, just to mention a few tasks. The attention that Martin gave to the above is evident in his book ‘I, Pilate’. The contribution that Bob Banner made, with his short story involving a testing officer and a young lady seeking a truck licence proved that sexism can be a dangerous thing. It can rebound and have serious consequences. David Christmas is considering writing a book about his experiences among the disadvantaged people of Zimbabwe. David to his credit is involved in ‘hands on’ missionary work. The final reading for the day was given by John Wright from his novel now in preparation. This chapter titled ‘See Naples and Die’ tells of his first posting as a junior officer on a coal boat destined for Naples. His description of Mt Vesuvius – the only active volcano on the continent of Europe and his visits to the ancient cities, including Pompeii was enlightening. All are invited to our next meeting at the Beerwah Library on June 18 for a 10.00am start. Visitors, potential members and guests will be given a warm welcome.

Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Inc

Peachester District Horticulture Society Inc.

Contributed by Ian McCarron At our last monthly meeting the lucky door fruit tray prize was won by Dorothy Harrison and the fruit tray raffle was won by Dorothy Forster. Birthdays for June: Dolly Anthony, Cyril Davis and Heather Smith. Many happy returns to all. Thank you to our guest speakers who gave a very informative talk on psychology. I know that there are several seniors out there that are quite talented with musical instruments. At the moment we are looking for someone that can play a piano, if so, we would love to hear from you. Last Thursday Glasshouse Seniors had a visit from Strathpine Seniors Club. A good day was had by all. They were provided with morning tea, top entertainment and a tasty lunch. Thank you to all who helped in setting up tables, workers in the kitchen, provision of prizes for progressive raffle, provision of items for the stall and the organising of the entertainment, well done Frank. Thank you to our special guest Ron Smith for your top entertainment. The lucky door fruit tray was won by Gloria Reddacliff and the fruit tray raffle was won by Patricia Williamson. Thursday, August 5 - Visit from Coolum Senior Citizens.

Contributed by Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer) Under the shade of a massive fig tree in the garden of John and Gail Gyzemyter was the venue for our May meeting. With some of the trees just showing their Autumn foliage, it is a delightful garden. It was disappointing that our guest speaker was unable to attend. Condolences were expressed for the sad passing of John Fenton, club patron for many years and to Coral Beutel for the sad passing of Ken. John Gyzemyter read a short and poignant poem, penned by Coral in memory of Ken. Gail Gyzemyter explained that many citrus trees are dropping fruit due to a bad infestation of the fruit piecing moth which is active at night. Margaret Ferris showed us a sample of her unusual tree growing in her garden. (Of which I didn’t get the name). Gordon Howitt showed us some large lizard eggs (hatched) he had found in his garden. Sue Bell asked about a problem with her coffee tree which was going yellow. Members thought that the amount of rain was the cause and Gail

Gyzemyter wanted to know about the cause of unusual spots on some leaves, but no-one had an answer. Results of the competition lunch - first - Joan Kropp, second - Margaret Ferris. The flower of the month for June is Camellia – Japonica. The next meeting will be in the garden of Mike and Elaine Sinnamon, 101 Candle Mountain Drive, Peachester on Thursday June 17, at 9.30am. Bring along a mug, chair and lunch for an enjoyable day. Guest speaker, Greg Brown (Brownie) will be speaking on Parasitic Plants. Visitors welcome. For more information phone 5496 9169.

Meeting under the big fig tree

The Mountain Rainbows Singing Group Contributed by Lola Vollbrecht

Our monthly concert was held on June 7. Tadek played keyboard music as the 70 guests arrived. Lola welcomed all, and then recited ‘Life is a garden’. Frank was MC sharing jokes during the morning. The Rainbows first bracket of songs which had a country theme sang ‘Put another log on the fire’ also ‘Don’t fence me in’. Marie accompanied on keyboard. John and Dolly’s duet was ‘Pistol packin’ mama’. Pam accompanied by Frank playing guitar sang ‘I’m leaving on a jet plane’. Wyn, Joy and Loretta sang ‘Black hills of Dakota’. Frank presented ‘When the currawong come down from the mountain’. The 'old timers'

claim that is the sign that the snow is about to fall on the Alps. The ‘Cow Patties’ mimed to lively country music including ‘The Tennessee birdwalk’. Dolly’s humorous monologue related to mature ladies buying a new bathing cossie. Dolly then joined Pam to sing ‘Among my souvenirs’. The Rainbows concluded with a lively bracket of ‘Jambayla’ and all experienced a ride on the ‘dead stage’ to head for home. Ev and the gals served a tasty lunch. Our thanks once again to the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club and Matilda Fruit Barn for their support. A busy fun morning enjoyed by all! GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

When we think of what has just happened in the last couple of weeks to one of our local people who was murdered for no apparent reason, how do we react and what do we think about this incident? From what I understand about how it happened I have to say, what a waste. What a tragedy this was. It should never have happened. One question we can ask is, why is this happening? Where does this all lead? What is going on in the world with people who do things like that? It is not right. It is terrible. It seems in this world people get angry over very little and then do crazy things. For what? Some people can’t be told anything. Why? Some think that they can do whatever they want and if you get in their way, look out. Where is the world heading to? Is there anyone safe these days? If we go back a long time we see some

similarities. In the time of the Biblical judges there were some good times and some very bad times. It says ‘In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit’ (Judges 21:25). Now this was written over 3,000 years ago. It seems we can see similarities with our society today. It also says something else in the beginning of the book of Judges, that a generation grew up who did not know God and what God had done (see Judges 2:10-11). What we see here is when people are turning away from God and doing their own thing this results in terrible things happening in our communities. It seems that today we are in a similar situation where people do whatever. So tragic and unnecessary problems are happening in our society today which are not necessary. There is a solution to these problems. Something to ponder.

Same old, same old

To pause for half a second or less, one can see that life amongst political parties is the same old, old, old story. During the lead up to an election there are heaps of mouth watering promises then reality sets in. According to the ruling party everything is on track with just a few adjustments. According to the opposition party there is the constant claim that the government is making a right muck up and all the people will suffer the consequences. Tom Rundell, Warana

A sign from the past

Fifty years ago there was a cartoon in the Daily Telegraph Sydney; it showed a map of Australia with boats from other countries coming towards it. The next map showed the boats going away. All that was left was the outline of Australia. Les Caris Mooloolah

A novel challenge

I have entered The Novel Challenge and have committed to fundraise $500.00 in support of those affected by multiple sclerosis. Did you know? - The average age of diagnosis of MS is just 30 years - Three times more women than men are affected by MS - More than 20,000 people in Australia have MS - There is no known cause or cure Please take a moment to view my online fundraising web page and help me reach my fundraising goal. It’s quick and easy. You can donate securely online using your credit card by clicking on the link below: http://register.thenovelchallenge.org.au/The-NovelChallenge/shaz/e All information is secure and all donations will be sent electronically to MS Australia. A tax-deductible receipt will automatically be sent to your inbox once the donation is verified. Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system affecting more young adult Australians than any other neurological condition. Your donation will go directly towards providing a wide range of services and support to people living with MS. Your support is greatly appreciated. Sharon Chamberlain Glass House Mountains

Re: cancellation of this year’s Charity Sports

As a community we are all understandably upset that circumstances prevented this year’s Charity Sports Day going ahead. Believe me, it’s a decision

the Charity Sports Committee didn’t take lightly. This year would have marked the 40th anniversary of this event and the funds it raises for the Queensland Cancer Council. It’s an event that brings the whole community together. Whether you’re putting the final touches to restoring a vintage tractor or engine, getting a pre-war car or motor cycle ready for display, taking photographs, organising athletics, grooming horses, cooking all day, being a sponsor, or just being one of the main organisers worrying about every last minute little detail in your section, you do it cheerfully for the sake of people when they need support from the Queensland Cancer Council, and to help fund research into finding new treatments for cancer. We can only hope local government and the community are able to work together for the rest of this year, so the Charity Sports can go ahead next year. Bob Banner, Peachester

Thanks for having a cuppa

Landsborough Hall Committee held a morning tea for cancer on May 26. A huge thank you to all who attended on the day; those who helped set up and worked or manned stalls or the kitchen and helped clean up afterwards. Thank-you to all who donated prizes, John who entertained and Jody from the Cancer Council who gave a talk on how the money earned was spent each year. Also thank you to Glasshouse Country News. Door prize: Cecily, raffle: Bev Thompson. I hope everyone had a good morning as without your help we could not have raised the $2,422.55. Shirley Ruhle, Landsborough Hall Committee member

Rubbishing our scenic area

I totally agree with Mark's letter ‘Glass House Mountains – Australian Landscape or Brisbane's closest trail bike and 4WD park’. I have been documenting the flowers of our beautiful mountains with the Queensland Herbarium. In many areas some very unique plants that were once abundant now no longer exist because of the activity of trail bikes and 4WD's. Huge mud holes are now common on most of the tracks around our mountains as these testosterone fuelled morons go ever outward to avoid their own mess. They become impassable, making what were once beautiful relaxing walks into dangerous obstacle courses. I often feel threatened by the aggressive nature of some of these people on their mostly unregistered and extremely noisy machines. Mark also mentions the explosion of rubbish being dumped. Many really bad weeds are spreading into our parks and it will cost many thousands of dollars to eradicate them if anyone ever gets around to it. Did you know that on average more than two vehicles are dumped and usually torched in this area every week? This situation was made worse by the fact that many access roads are often impassable for emergency vehicles. This total disregard of the environment by the public and authorities will one day come back to haunt us. It appears that both politicians and police are very selective in what laws should be enforced. Jane Thompson Glass House Mountains

Global Skills with Local Impact

Strength in Business In this time he has also designed and developed new websites for the Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce, a major insurance broker and numerous other businesses in the region.

These days, growing and succeeding in business can be tough and competitive, and often we need all the help that we can get to gain and retain our most precious business asset: our client base.

“I’ve been really thrilled with the response I’ve had from the local community thus far,” says Ben. “It’s been a pleasure getting to know the local business owners and I look forward to growing the technical capabilities of the region in the same way that the region has grown on myself and my family.”

One of the most popular and effective business tools that has recently emerged is the structured business networking group, where like-minded businesses come together to help each other grow.

Ben’s web and software development company, Fylesoft Pty Ltd, prides itself on its high level of 'initiovation' - a self-coined term to describe the company’s views. Ben Foster became a proud Glass House Mountains resident less than 18 months ago, but already he is having a big impact on local business! Ben brings with him, from his hometown of Newcastle, over a decade of professional experience in the fields of website design, software development and general I.T. Since establishing himself in the area with his wife Leah and daughter Calani, Ben has headed up a charity scheme for Cancer Council of Queensland, been involved with the local Rotary Club and created the 'Strength in Business' networking group to boost local businesses of all trades.

“The term is short for ‘innovation through initiative’... for me personally it means that every project should be better than the last - that there is always room for improvement with a little imaginative thinking,” Ben explains. Fylesoft’s most recent campaign, Technofyle I.T., is aimed at providing small to medium businesses with a complete technical package which includes regular I.T. support combined with website development and digital marketing over the course of a year. Ben hopes that this will be one more way that he can assist local businesses to experience growth through technical development, without having to fork out annual salaries for marketing and I.T. staff.

The newly formed 'Strength in Business' Networking (SBN) group provides just that for the Glasshouse country region. The premise of the group is simple - “we gather not to sell ourselves, but rather to learn about what each member has to offer. If we have a sound knowledge of each other’s business offerings, then we can pass on these offerings in our every-day dealings with members of the public.” SBN is for business owners of every trade. Unlike some more formal groups which cost thousands of dollars per year, members are asked only to contribute 90 minutes of their time each Friday morning (7:00am - 8:30am) plus an optional $10.00 per week for a hot breakfast. SBN is accepting new members right now. To receive an information sheet and application form, email ben@strengthinbusiness.com.au

Day for Daniel

Parliamentary News – 2010 State Budget announced

I have agreed to join the campaign to wear red to work on October 29 for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. I hope my parliamentary colleagues will do the same. This is such an easy but effective gesture to show our support and make people around Australia aware of the good work the Foundation does. It’s also a chance to show Australians that politicians can put their rivalries aside to unite for an important cause. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation hopes that the involvement of politicians in the event will boost the national profile of Day for Daniel. Like everyone else, I am heartbroken by Daniel’s disappearance and I also believe the work of the Foundation is incredibly important. Daniel’s parents Bruce and Denise are determined to spread their child safety message as widely as possible and I’m thrilled I’m getting a chance to play a part in that. I have written to all Federal and Queensland politicians, asking them to commit to wearing an item of red clothing on October 29. They are especially encouraged to buy a red tie for $30.00 from the Foundation, so that they’ll also be donating money to the cause.

Army Tanks

It was interesting to see the Rudd government ‘back-flip’ and announce it now will pay the transport costs of gifting three de-commissioned Leopard army tanks to Maroochydore, Woodford and Kilcoy RSL’s, even though it had already refused to foot the bill. Records from 2008 show the Rudd Government refused to cover the transport costs, and it wrongly accused the former Government of doing the same. In Howard’s original plan to gift the retired armoured vehicles to 29 RSL’s around Australia, no club was ever going to be out of pocket. The previous Liberal National Government planned to give our local RSL’s another way to honour Australia’s military history. It is laughable that Labor is now claiming credit for a project that was started by the Howard Government and then delayed by Labor for three years. There can be only one reason for the change of heart and that is the Federal Election. It is disrespectful to use a sacred Australian institution like the RSL for an easy vote-grab.

Recently I attended the official opening of Gateway Care in Helen Street, Caloundra. Gateway Care has been serving the Sunshine Coast community for a number of years and has outgrown several sites within the Caloundra area. It provides community members in need with access to support services as well as a food supermarket where if you largely fit within their guidelines you can access food at a greatly reduced rate. This care service has grown to reach more than 15,000 disadvantaged Sunshine Coast people with more people contacting Gateway Care every week as residents struggle through tough economic times. To contact Gateway Care to enquire about their service to community please call 5491 6677. Gateway Care is run under the auspices of Act’s Church International Care Arm. Whilst their aim is to support disadvantaged people, there is also the need to secure financial donations to finish the construction of their new premises. Gateway Care is a registered Charity. admin@apostle.net.au

Nominations for local business awards

Nominations are now open this year’s Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Awards. Any individual or business in the Beerwah, Caloundra, Glasshouse, Maleny, Landsborough, Kawana, Warana and Palmview areas – or any business that supplies goods or services to this region – can be nominated for an award. You do not need to be a member of the Chamber. The awards are designed to highlight the important role small, medium and large businesses play in our local economy and I would like to see as many local businesses from your region as possible represented amongst the nominees. Judges will be looking for growth, innovation, creativity, community leadership, and achievements relating to specific business or industry sectors. I encourage you to nominate your business and also recognise the dedicated efforts of your staff by nominating them in our Customer Service categories. Nomination forms are available from the chamber website at www.caloundrabuzz.com The winners will be announced at the gala dinner on August 27.

Maple and Teak Street update

Council recently called on residents for consideration on additional new Left Turn Only exit from Teak Street as part of the next stages of the Maleny Streetscape. Council received 20 feedback forms and of these there was strong support for the Left Turn Only exit. Other feedback included comments on safety issues for zebra crossings and these have been passed onto the project officer. Council visited 32 businesses in the area around the new roundabout and proposed Teak Street intersection. There was no negative feedback regarding this proposal so we are looking forward to the completed works.

Local Law review

Council has until December 31, 2010 to review and consolidate three diverse sets of Local Laws and Subordinate Local Laws into one functional set of Local Laws and Subordinate Local Laws. This is a very important piece of work as it impacts on most of us, on a daily basis. It will cover keeping of roosters, cats and dogs, to disposal of human remains outside of a cemetery and political signage and lighting of fires. I strongly urge you to get involved and have your say. I will advertise through the column, how, when and where you can get involved.

Horses at Mooloolah

It has been brought to my attention that owners are not cleaning up after their horses on pathways around Mooloolah. The local law states that: The keeper of an animal must immediately remove and dispose of all faeces in a sanitary manner if the animal defecates in a public place. I ask that residents respect this rule to help make the region an enjoyable place for all.

Living well

“As part of our ongoing commitment to veteran health care, Veterans’ Health Week aims to support and educate our older veterans and the entire veteran community,” Mr Griffin said. “This financial year the Government will spend $5.2 billion on healthcare, providing essential support to our veteran community,” Mr Griffin said.

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel, Alan Griffin, has announced Veterans’ Health Week will be held from July 19 - 25, fulfilling a Government election commitment and building on the success of last year. Mr Griffin said the theme of this year’s Veterans’ Health Week is ‘nutrition’ to encourage the veteran community to learn more about healthy eating and take the opportunity to polish their culinary skills. “Last year 96 events were held during Veterans’ Health Week around Australia and some 5,000 people attended the activities. This year there will be more than 130 events, so there will be plenty of opportunity to get involved,” Mr Griffin said. “Veterans’ Health Week will be held from July 19 - 25 and veterans, war widows and their friends and families will have the chance to be a part of cooking competitions, see demonstrations of healthy cooking techniques by chefs, learn how to create their own kitchen garden or go on a bush walk and try ‘bush food’. “I encourage the veteran community to note the dates, July 19 - 25, in their diaries and get involved in the activities on offer during Veterans’ Health Week. “Learning more about growing your own food and cooking can be a lot of fun. Another bonus of eating well is that a healthy diet can help to reduce the risk of illness and disease.

Making Memories Never before has there been a time when cameras were so readily available as they are today. In some ways it has become so easy to record life’s events and yet the challenge of photographing those near and dear to us, those most unpredictable of beings, our children, remains. The advantage of taking photos of your own children is that you have already built a great Photo by Chris rapport so with a little planning you are able to capitalise on your child’s interests and natural curiosity. Planning for a photo session could include: Ŗ Knowing your camera and the settings you are going to use, including the use of fill flash for most outdoor shots. Ŗ Preparing for an outing such as the beach or a walk in the bush where you are both going to have some fun and that you know will provide an interesting environment so you are able to capture a variety of expressions. Follow along with the child and let yourself enter his or her world. In working with the child be sure the camera is at or below the child’s eye level. Use of a long lens allows you to move back and give the child some space. Finally, always have your camera handy for those special, unforgettable moments especially where children are most comfortable - at home. Photo by Chris Above all, if the magic is not working, buy an ice-cream and try again another day!

A new report released earlier this month discredits the commonly held belief that heart conditions only affect older men. Women and Heart Disease, prepared by Australian Institute of Health and Welfare for the National Heart Foundation, has revealed that cardiovascular disease – such as heart attacks, stroke and heart failure – kills more Australian women than any other condition. Of all the women who died in Australia in 2006, more than a third of them died as a result of cardiovascular disease. It is responsible for more than a quarter of premature deaths amongst Australian women and about two million Australian women— or one in five—are currently living with cardiovascular disease. However, the most disturbing finding of the report is that some of these deaths could have been prevented. More than nine out of 10 women have at least one preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as not getting enough exercise, not eating a healthy diet, smoking or drinking too much alcohol. For more information, including recipes for healthy living and eating, visit www.goredforwomen.org.au or call the Heart Foundation’s heart health information line on 1300 362 787.

The Queensland Air Museum is honouring the memory and feat of Captain John Duigan with engine runs, parachute jumps and opening the cockpits of some 12 aircraft from its collection of over 40 complete aeroplanes, for visitors to sit in and get the feel of what it was like for aviators to fly Australian and international skies. Three contenders, including legendary escapologist Harry Houdini, claimed the honour of being first in Australia to fly a powered aircraft. However the Queensland Air Museum is paying tribute to the anniversary by commissioning a model of the 1910 Duigan Flyer. As far as the museum can ascertain, the Duigan 1910 Biplane was the first Australian built powered aeroplane to take to Australian skies. The model will be on display at the museum with an array of flying scale models from Sunshine Coast Modellers. This year the weekend will feature the running of a Pratt and Whitney R-2000, 14 cylinder radial engine donated by RAAF Base Amberley. Parachutists from Sunshine Coast Skydivers will stage three jumps each day into the Queensland Air Museum grounds, followed by a parachute folding demonstration with commentary. Visitors will enjoy a display of over 50 aircraft ranging from magnificent World War I flying machines to jet fighters. The display of aviation memorabilia and historical items will be complemented by two door prizes of a free Chopperline helicopter flight for up to three people over the Sunshine Coast, and a free tandem parachute jump with Sunshine Coast Skydivers. Entry in the door prizes is free to visitors, and the prizes will be drawn at closing on Sunday, July 4. Food outlets, children’s’ rides, live music and interactive activities for younger children will also be available. The open cockpit weekend will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 3 - 4, from 9.00am - 4.00pm.

Coffee: there’s beans and there’s beans! Coffee was discovered in Ethiopia in the 9th century and spread globally from the 1500s. The modern espresso machine was invented in Milan in 1945 and soon became synonymos with good coffee in coffeehouses worldwide. Oddly, the most expensive coffee today is Indonesian ‘Kopi Luwak’, which sells for $50 a cup. This particular coffee bean has a quirky lifecycle: the bean is eaten by the furry little Asian Palm Civet, digested and pooped onto the forest floor, where it is harvested, roasted and then brewed into coffee. Apparently knowing it’s cat-scat doesn’t deter its dedicated drinkers! The good news is that to enjoy a rich and rewarding cup of coffee here in Beerwah, you don’t have to empty your wallet and drink rodent droppings! It is acknowledged that of the two main coffee species grown, Arabica beans have a superior taste and are found in gourmet coffee blends the world over. At Pasta d’Vine, our coffee is made of a blend of the finest arabica beans and brewed by trained baristas in an authentic Italian espresso machine. With a spicy aroma, medium body and a pleasantly lingering aftertaste, we are sure our coffee will keep you coming back for more!

Relax and enjoy a coffee and cake special with one of our house-made cakes. Or round off a tasty snack or meal with a fresh, hot cup of your choice: whether it’s an espresso, long black, latte, flat white, or cappuccino our coffee is available for you to drink in-house, or take away.

News in brief

New cyber bullying brochure for parents

Queensland parents can help keep their children safer from online bullies with the release of a new cyber safety brochure. Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said the Government had developed a practical guide for parents on where to get more information about how to improve the safety of their children when using mobile phones and the internet. The cyber safety pamphlet provides parents with a list of the new technologies that children presently use as well as links to more information including the Queensland Police Service’s resource, ‘Who’s Chatting To Your Kids?’ The cyber safety booklet for parents will be available to download from http://education. qld.gov.au/studentservices and will also be distributed to those parents who attend Dr Michael Carr-Gregg’s seminars between May and August. The Queensland Government, in partnership with the Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence, has engaged Dr Carr-Gregg to conduct an education series – ‘Action Against Bullying’ at 10 locations across the state. For more information on the seminars go to http:// education.qld.gov.au/studentservices/bulletins/ actionagainstbullying.html JUNE 16 2010 |

DES information available

The recent campaign for DES (diethylstilboestrol) Awareness Week June 1-7 raised awareness of the anti-miscarriage drug, DES, given to women during pregnancy from 1938 to 1971 (and sometimes beyond). Women given DES and their children of that pregnancy are at higher risk of certain types of cancer and reproductive problems. There are about 160,000 DES exposed Australians, yet many are unaware of the fact and the potential adverse health effects. It is important that people with known or suspected exposure to DES are aware of the vital special care they need. Support group contact: DES Action Australia-NSW 02 9875 4820. We are seeking people who have some time to spare and a caring, non-critical nature. This volunteer opportunity is open to both men and women of all ages. Volunteers are provided with training and a great opportunity to learn new skills, have fun and become part of an enthusiastic, committed team. Family support volunteers provide emotional and practical support at times 30 |

of stress and pressure, visiting families and providing supportive telephone contact. Volunteers gain from their experience in many ways including personal satisfaction, learning new skills and increased understanding of themselves. Existing volunteers frequently comment that they believe the support they offer is very worthwhile and that it really makes a difference to people’s lives. If you are interested in becoming a Family Support Volunteer to work alongside families in the Hinterland communities you can contact Wendy McManus on 5429 6766 Monday – Thursday.

Ready to escape the rat race?

Property of the week

This peaceful rural retreat may be your ticket to freedom. It is nestled on over two acres of land in the peaceful Mooloolah Valley and located only three kilometres from the charming township of Mooloolah. Designed and built two years ago as a Bed and Breakfast. There are four private suites plus spacious Manager’s residence, these private suites would lend themselves to a multitude of purposes. Coupled with the large workshop with three phase power, the property has the potential for art / sculpture / cooking school stays. The spacious owner’s residence is designed to allow privacy from the guest’s accommodation, all of which overlooks the picturesque dam. Although perfectly positioned to allow access to all of the Sunshine Coasts’ attractions, the property would also suit an extended family wanting to live together but still have separate residences. Inspection strictly by appointment only For Sale by Formal Tender – Closes July 16, 2010. Phone Roger Guillemet on 0418 485 954 or 5439 6300 for more information.

Volunteers are the life blood of every organisation. We were delighted when Gordon Kubank received an inaugural Glass House Country Volunteer Award from Andrew Powell M.P. Gordon drives from Caloundra three or more times every week. He maintains the museum’s computers, the finances and assists along with wife Jenny at working bees. Our youngest volunteer is Jack Higgins. Jack, 14, is working for his Duke of Edinborough Award by spending an hour per week for three months recording school registers onto computer and has almost reached the 1,000th entry. We are making a lot of information available to the public in digital format. Do you have an hour to spare for such a project? Newest recruits Harley and Michelle have taken on the onerous job of setting up a program to promote the museum. If their massive effort is rewarded we will have lots of volunteers and visitors. Our volunteer group may be small but during May they shone brightly at working bees replacing older cases with refurbished ones. A number of items have come out of store and others are much more visible. Several of our key volunteers are away in June and July so we determined that those left behind could best manage the museum if we closed Saturday. If our committed volunteer base increases we will look to increasing the days we open. The Sunshine Coast Council came to our aid with funding the restoration of the Nicklin desk. It now takes pride of place near the story of ‘The Changing Faces of Government’ and the collection donated by Sir Francis Nicklin. Once again the Sunshine Coast Council has provided a grant to purchase a plinth for the lens from the lighthouse. The Society will provide funding for a storyboard. I’ll keep you posted. Wendy Dixon

Tohm's A-Z of plants J is for Juniper Some readers may be wondering if the Juniper is relevant to our local area, but in fact there are many varieties that are well suited to the region. Junipers are a versatile and generally hardy genus of conifers. Conifers are a primitive form of plant which produces a seed though no flower. As a result of this, they are predominantly grown in the garden for their form and the form Junipers take is extremely varied with varieties ranging in height from 20cm up to 15m tall. A great advantage for anybody who doesn’t want to spend too much time maintaining their garden is that Junipers are slow growing and live for a very long time. Once established, most varieties will not need to be touched again and in fact heavy pruning will deform and possibly kill the plant. Any pruning, if required, should be of the new growth only, avoiding the older wood. The woody branches when cut will usually not grow back. Of course if you happen to be growing the Juniper for a Bonsai then this characteristic is quite desirable. The small male cones open up in spring and pollinate the female cones with the help of the wind or gravity, though not all varieties have male and female flowers on the one plant. The seed develops in a fleshy cone which looks similar to a berry.

The fruit from some varieties are used in a number of ways. A sauce made from the berries provides a great flavour to roasted meats and is especially popular with game. Traditional medicine uses it for treating diabetes and urinary tract disease and many of its properties are now being studied for use in western medicine. The most widely known use for Juniper berries is in the distillation of gin. Juniper is distant relative of our local Bunya Pine and like most conifers has a wonderful pine oil smell when rubbed or cut. Most Junipers prefer acid soils and while they enjoy regular water, they can endure long periods without additional watering. The plant in the photograph grows on the edge of a rock wall and has never had more than rain water in its 20 years of life. If you would like to include Junipers as a part of your garden landscape, visit a local nursery to see what varieties grow best in the region.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Trailblazer, Xanthostemon chrysanthus form Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi Oi Oi! Hang on, that’s not how a garden article normally starts but this is no ordinary month coming up. With the Socceroos bidding for the World Cup in South Africa we thought we would Go Green and Gold this week and there is no better plant for our area with that colouration than Trailblazer. Trailblazer is a variegated form of the popular Golden Penda. Its green and gold foliage is stunning and really lifts a dull spot in the garden. It produces masses of large golden yellow flowers throughout the year. It is very hardy in full sun or semi shade and makes a handsome large shrub approximately 4m x 3m.

If it is Green and Gold foliage you are after then Trailblazer is for you. Go the Socceroos!

Neighbourhood disputes over trees and fences

Queensland neighbourhoods are set to become more peaceful, with the Bligh Government releasing draft new laws that will make it easier for neighbours to resolve disputes over trees and fences. Attorney-General Cameron Dick said a draft copy of the new laws had been released for consultation, giving the community a chance to provide feedback on this important law reform. Key changes proposed in the draft Bill include: ‡ FOHDUHU GHILQLWLRQV RI ÂśVXIILFLHQW GLYLGLQJ IHQFH¡ and the types of trees covered by the proposed new laws ‡ D IUDPHZRUN IRU UHVROYLQJ GLVSXWHV EHWZHHQ neighbours over trees and fences, including the use of formal notices for contributing to and/or maintaining a dividing fence. ‡ FODULILFDWLRQ RI WKH UHVSRQVLELOLWLHV RI D ÂśWUHH NHHSHU¡ XVXDOO\ WKH WUHH V RZQHU WR HQVXUH WKHLU tree does not cause injury or damage to persons RU D QHLJKERXU V SURSHUW\ ‡ WKH XVH RI WKH 4XHHQVODQG &LYLO DQG Administrative Tribunal to adjudicate disputes. Mr Dick said the draft Bill was the result of extensive research and broad consultation that examined the most common causes of neighbourhood disputes and how they might be resolved. He said the government has modernised the outdated laws regarding dividing fences, which were introduced almost 60 years ago, to ensure they are more applicable to life in Queensland in the 21st century. Mr Dick said the laws also included a new statutory framework giving QCAT jurisdiction to make orders in disputes over trees and fences. "While the proposed new laws will not resolve each and every neighbourhood dispute about fences and trees, the government expects that they will go some way to make our suburbs more friendly and neighbourly places. "At the end of the day, we want to keep people out of the courts by ensuring they have a clear understanding of their rights, and accessible mechanisms to resolve disputes amicably, as good neighbours. The draft Neighbourhood Disputes Resolution Bill is available at www.justice.qld.gov.au and feedback can be provided until July 9. JUNE 16 2010 |

A man and a little boy entered a barbershop together. After the man received the full treatment: shave, shampoo, manicure and haircut, he placed the boy in the chair.
