Hi everyone
Many of you will be aware of the hard work that is put into running our local Museum at Landsborough and that the hard work is done by a group of dedicated volunteers. Recently GCNews bought you a story about how you can acknowledge the hard work done by these dedicated volunteers by voting for them in the ABC Radio National’s Regional Museums Awards. ABC Radio National is inviting Australia’s regional museums to step forward and tell us all why they should be recognised as the finest in the land. Now in its third year, the Regional Museums Award will focus on museums in their roles as local story-tellers and local ambassadors (encouraging tourism and regional development) and how they look towards survival in the future. The Regional Museums Award
website at abc.net.au/rn/museums has all eligibility and nomination information, together with a guest book for everyone to record their favourite museum memories. Nominations must be received by Friday, July 23. Judges will shortlist museums as finalists for all categories of the Regional Museums Award and select one organisation as the overall winner. ABC Radio National’s Bush Telegraph will travel to the winning organisation’s museum to record a program at the venue for national broadcast. Winners will be announced during ABC Radio National Breakfast in late-August.

Local news Prepare.Act.Survive this bushfire season
Lou Spann
Prepare.Act. Survive, the new bushfire safety campaign has been launched ahead of the official start of the bushfire season in an effort to ensure residents are well prepared.
The Prepare.Act.Survive campaign follows the tragedy of the Victorian bushfires in February 2009 and recommendations from the Royal Commission. Adopted nationally, the initiative allows residents to not only prepare for bushfire season but equips them with the knowledge they need to take appropriate actions to survive during a bushfire. The campaign includes community education, a new Fire Danger Rating system and the introduction of standardised community warnings advising of the critical factors of a bushfire, as well as radio and television commercials, a lift out which will be sent to residents in ‘at risk’ areas and a travellers guide to assist locals and visitors of the dangers of being caught unprepared. The media campaign encourages all residents who live in or near bushland to prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan to help outline what needs to be
done if you decide to leave an area before a bushfire threatens and what you need to do if you decide to stay in your home. Coochin Creek Rural Fire Brigade first officer Lou Spann said it was important that the local community took some personal responsibility ahead of the fire season. He said because of all the wet weather earlier in the year, there was a lot of fuel around. “Our fuel load is the same, if not worse, than last year,” Mr Spann said. “We’re anticipating the fire season could start as early as August, so it’s important that property owners are well prepared.” Mr Spann said in the event of a fire, property owners should call 000 as soon as possible. Bushfire survival plans are available for download from www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au More information on Prepare.Act.Survive can be found at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au Don't miss the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade's open day this Sunday, July 18 from 9.00am - 4.00pm at the Glass House Fire Station. And mark your calendar for Coochin Creek Rural Fire Brigade’s AGM, Wednesday, August 11, 7.00pm at the station, Roy’s Road.

The Sunshine Coast State Emergency Service last week farewelled almost a century of experience at a retirement function for three of its best and longest-serving members. Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts congratulated Lloyd Larney, Graeme Cheal and Jim Case for their involvement with SES units across the Sunshine Coast for the past three decades. “Between them they have notched more than 90 years of helping the community in times of need,” Mr Roberts said. “I cannot overstate the importance of the ongoing contributions that men such as Lloyd, Jim and Graeme have made to their local communities over the years,” he said. The Minister said the experience and knowledge these men brought to the SES was invaluable. “Their retirement will leave a very big hole on the coast and they will be sorely missed.” Well known local resident Graeme Cheal led a number of SES rescues around the Glasshouse Mountains over his time with the service, rescuing stranded climbers since 1962 and becoming the leader of the SES Mountain and Vertical Rescue Group in 1983. Graeme has also received a number of nationally recognised awards for his service including the Australia Day Achievement Medallion, a Bravery Award and the Emergency Services Medal. He is also involved with the local Rural Fire Brigade and Apex Club, as well as helping to organise the Beerwah Charity Sports Day.
Graeme Cheal, Jim Case and Lloyd Larney at last week’s retirement function Jim Case has been with the State Emergency Service for 35 years. He was only meant to be with the SES for a few months when he was asked to join back in 1975 as a controller for Landsborough Shire. Three decades later he’s still there. Jim has been heavily involved in almost every aspect of the State Emergency Service, from his role as the Caloundra SES Controller to being involved in the Local Disaster Management Group. In 2000, he received the Australia Day Medallion in recognition of his SES service and received the 2003 Caloundra Citizen of the Year Award for his contribution to the service. Maleny’s Lloyd Larney was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for Community Service in 2009. As well as a group leader with the SES in Maleny, Lloyd has also been a scout leader, deputy fire warden and coordinator for the local Neighbourhood Watch, which he has run for 16 years. He is also a previous winner of the Caloundra Citizen of the Year, in 2004.

LNP Member for Fisher Peter Slipper has announced that Australia Post has agreed to his request to install an extra posting box in Beerwah - at the Beerwah Marketplace. “This is great news for the community and I am pleased to have been able to assist in making sure that this has been achieved,” Mr Slipper said. “The Marketplace is a safe, convenient and central shopping destination for residents not only in Beerwah, but also in neighbouring areas like Glasshouse Mountains, Landsborough and Peachester, and it makes sense to have a posting box at this location,” he said. Mr Slipper met with Australia Post on several occasions, asking that it consider the new box at Beerwah Marketplace. “I thank Australia Post for its decision, and for genuinely listening to my representations on behalf of local people; I know the community will appreciate the new box and the convenience that it will bring.” The new posting box will be installed within a week.
Avenue of Remembrance On Monday, August 2 at 10.00am the community is invited to attend a Memorial Service in Anzac Avenue, Beerburrum to commemorate 90 years since the avenue of original trees were planted in 1920 at the soldier settlement.
President of the Glass House Country RSL Sub Branch Inc., Libby Dios-Brun, said the ceremony will involve the re-dedication of Anzac Avenue, dedication of a Memorial Stone with plaque and a re-enactment of the tree planting by Beerburrum State School students. Afterwards morning tea will be held at the School of Arts Hall and served by the P & C of Beerburrum State School. A book by local historian Ann Ross, ‘Beerburrum Anzac Avenue Memorial Trees’, will also be
released on the day. After World War 1, Beerburrum was the largest Queensland soldier settlement and the book is based on this fascinating history. One hundred free copies will be available on the day. Funding for the event has been provided by the Sunshine Coast Council and the Glass House Country RSL Sub Branch Inc. Veteran Affairs funded the plaque and flags for Beerburrum State School students.

Make a deposit at blood bank The Sunshine Coast Blood Service is calling on Landsborough and Beerwah residents to get behind this week’s visit to the area and ensure the success of the visit by showing the region’s well known community spirit. The mobile donor mobile will be in the Landsborough and Beerwah area this week from Tuesday to Thursday and still needs donors at this time when blood stocks are so low that currently there are more people who require blood products than there are donors. Whilst bookings are currently uncharacteristically low for the area, Daniel Rowling, Community Relations Officer for the Blood Service is optimistic that local residents will get behind the important cause and lend a hand (or an arm as it may be in this case). “We already know from past visits to the area that the Glasshouse community are great backers of the need for blood and have historically been
some of the best donors on the Coast,” Mr Rowling said. “We have always been so grateful to the local residents that take a little time out of their day to make a difference and we are really looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and hopefully some new ones when we visit,” Daniel said. With one in three people requiring blood in their lifetime and only one in 30 currently donating blood, it’s a pretty concerning statistic. Despite the low bookings, Daniel is confident that the famous ‘community spirit’ of the region will help the Red Cross get through what is looking to be a pretty quiet period. “We really need the support of the community and ask that if you are eligible to donate blood, please call us to make an appointment,” Daniel said.

Doing it for the kids
It’s something Keith Nicholson, 52, from Mt Mellum, has wanted to do for years. So when dreams met opportunity he jumped at the chance to participate in the 2010 XXXX Gold Port to Port Variety Bash. Over 200 cars will leave Southport on July 29 and finish at Port Douglas, covering 3,500 thousand kilometres of dirt roads in nine days. The route is retracing the original event which was held 21 years ago. Keith and his friend Nigel Faulkner will share the driving of a 1970 Ford Falcon. All Variety Bash vehicles have to be 30 years old or more. They’ve been putting a lot of work into preparing their ford, including rebuilding the suspension and putting in special seats.
Not only have they been paying for the car and all the work it needs, they’ve also donated money to the Variety Club themselves, as all money raised by the Bash participants goes to the Variety Club to continue its support of sick, disabled or disadvantaged children. “It’s always something I’ve wanted to do personally, it’s a great cause; I’ve got kids myself. I just thought ‘I can do that’,” Keith said. Keith, who usually spends his days at his business Nicholson Finance at Caloundra, said there’s a lot to look forward to about the upcoming event. “There’s 500 people on the trip enjoying themselves. For me it’s a bit of a break away from the humdrum of the finance world, there’s no laptop, no phone, no nothing. It’s a bit of an adventure,” he said. “My main worry would be breaking down or having a complete catastrophe because you could be three days into the event and a year of planning evaporates. But I guess that’s no different to any other motor sport or any sport.” Eight sponsors have come on board including Terry Morrow, from Landsborough Pub and Martin Butler from Enterprise Street Self Storage. Keith and Nigel are hoping more people will support their cause by either sponsoring, donating or buying raffle tickets for a fantastic ‘ride in a race car’ prize donated by racing driver Dick Johnson. “Even if I get two people put up their hand and offer $100.00 dollars each that’s $200.00 the kids didn’t have before,” Keith said. If you would like to help Keith and Nigel help the kids phone Keith on 0416 178 453.

Landsborough welcomes new scouts
Rotarian awarded
Scouting has recently come to Landsborough, and we are looking for children aged between seven -15 years old to join the new Cub Scout and Scout groups that meet on Wednesday and Thursday nights. It will appeal to kids who enjoy a variety of fun activities including camping, games, and bushcraft, while making friends. As well as offering plain old fun, Scouting aims to develop childrens’ confidence, independence and leadership potential through developing new skills in a variety of areas. Badges can be earned for diverse interests such as science, art, cooking, astronomy and water safety. With a great facility at the Scout grounds on Old Gympie Road, and two dedicated and experienced group leaders, interested parents are encouraged to check out scouts by ringing 5494 6156 (a/h) or via email at greas@bigpond.com For an overview of Scouts, visit the website at www.scouts.com.au
At the recent Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains change over dinner, Bob McLean was awarded one of Rotary’s highest awards, a Double Sapphire pin. Bob is a dedicated Rotarian with 35 years of service, serving in Moura, Boonah, Clermont, Biloela and now Glass House Mountains. He has given his heart and soul in organising the Glasshouse Country Garden Sustainability Expo, the annual Rotary calendar, and was the main driving force in getting the local Men’s Shed up and running, plus lots of other projects within the community. Congratulations Bob, and well done.
Scouts Jesse Budd and Angel Lucas (left and far right), and Cub Scouts Eli and Zoey Budd, and Isabella Parslow (left to right), were excited to recently undergo the ‘investment’ ceremony in which they officially became Scout and Cub members, and for which they got to wear their uniforms for the first time.

Local lad secures US soccer scholarship
Steven Van Lierop
Steven Van Lierop, 19, from Glass House Mountains started playing soccer when he was nine, and even from that early age his dream was to one day play professional soccer. That goal has moved one step closer with Steven receiving a soccer Scholarship from Reinhardt University in America. Steven will leave for the University located at Waleska, Georgia on August 6. The scholarship is worth at least $16,000 per year for the next four years and will cover tuition, board, food, sports clothing and more. Steven will study for a university degree in Sports Management whilst playing soccer full time in a professional environment which will involve training every day and two soccer matches a week. Steven knows this is a huge opportunity for him. “It still hasn’t quite sunk in. I’m looking forward to the travel and getting to know different people because there’s a lot of players from England and Brazil on the team; having a different coach, and having a bit more professional atmosphere. “I have an uncle that lives in another state but other than that I don’t know anybody, which is a bit daunting and exciting at the same time,” he said.
Suicide bereavement workshop for Beerwah The needs of people who are bereaved by suicide will be the focus of a ‘Pathways to Care’ workshop being organised by United Synergies’ StandBy Response Service on Thursday, July 29. The workshop will be held at the Beerwah and District Youth and Community Care (BADYACC) Sportsground Complex, 13 Roberts Road, Beerwah from 9.00am - 12.00noon. Key community response services and groups will meet to establish an effective, coordinated, community response plan to provide early intervention and ongoing support to families, friends and associates bereaved through suicide. The plan will be developed by enlisting participation in the StandBy Response Service Referral Pathways program. StandBy Sunshine and Cooloola Coast coordinator Lynda Neville said it was important for a clear pathway to exist for bereaved people to access and receive support. “People who have experienced the trauma of losing a friend or loved one to suicide are not always able to articulate their need or may require different types of support at different times. “This workshop will ensure that all parties involved are clear about their roles and are able to offer coordinated support services which will not only provide much needed support, but will also assist in preventing further suicidal behaviour.” For further information about the workshop or the StandBy Response Service, please contact Lynda Neville on 5442 4277 or lneville@unitedsynergies.com.au
To be in the running for the scholarship Steven had to show he had outstanding academic and athletic ability. The NSR Soccer Australia organisation scouts soccer players from all over Australia for colleges in the USA. Steven participated in a trial match in 2009 where over 100 soccer players were invited to trial from all regions of Queensland. When Steven caught the eye of the scouts they offered him the chance to go to the next stage. That involved a thorough interview process where Steven was further assessed. Steven and his family always knew he had a special talent because after his first year of playing he was accepted in a development squad. This new opportunity in America means his goal of playing for the Socceroos one day and playing in the World Cup is even closer.

Doing business Introducing Glasshouse Country Chiropractic
SculptLife Personal Training launches ‘Four Weeks To Freedom’ boot camp for women
Dr Andrew Howden
Glasshouse residents can now benefit from the professional services of local chiropractor Dr Andrew Howden, who together with Chiropractic assistant and partner Kim Howden have opened the doors of Glasshouse Country Chiropractic. After growing up in the local area and attending school at Elimbah State and Caboolture State High, Andrew lived in Beerwah for many years, and now he and wife Kim, together with their three children, have recently returned to the area after spending five years in Perth. Before becoming a Chiropractor, Andrew was an electrical contractor, however an experience with his infant son who suffered from spinal joint dysfunction mimicking chronic reflux symptoms raised his awareness of the benefits of chiropractic. Now that he is a Chiropractor he realises the importance of proper spinal function in babies, especially after a traumatic event such as birth. Andrew also emphasises that spinal related problems can also be present without the symptoms of pain. While Andrew’s passion is in family wellness care, he has also been trained in sports Chiropractic, rehab and dry needling. He said he and wife Kim have now achieved another long held goal – to return home to Glasshouse and provide care for local residents, and are keen for locals to drop in and see them at their business premises at shop 6A in the Glasshouse Centre (next to the bakery). “We are dedicated to providing quality professional health care to the people of the Glasshouse Country community and surrounding areas,” Andrew said. So whether it’s for neck, back or joint pain, stiff or sore muscles, headaches, sports injuries, sleeping difficulties, children’s health problems, a lack of energy or vertigo and dizziness, plus a range of other symptoms, give Andrew and Kim a call at Glasshouse Country Chiropractic on 5493 0761.

One of the Sunshine Coast’s most well known personal training companies, SculptLife Personal Training, is now taking registrations for its new ‘Four Weeks to Freedom’ boot camp for women. The boot camp will be held at Bee Gees Sports Ground, Steve Irwin Way Monday through Saturday with morning classes at 6.00am and evening classes at 5.45pm, beginning July 19. Early morning boot camps are the ‘new wave’ in women’s fitness. They are exploding across Australia for two synergistic reasons - women report getting better results faster than with any other fitness program, and women have fun doing it, explaining why they stick to it and get better results. “We’re very excited about this launch and so is the community,” said Bianca Aiono, owner of SculptLife Personal Training since 2002. “Australia’s girth is growing because everyone is so busy and time-crunched. They struggle to fit traditional exercise into their day, and when pressed, it’s the first thing they drop,” Bianca said. “The problem is a lack of knowledge, accountability, camaraderie and support within a structured environment. When you can make fitness the first part of your day, before anything else can interfere, and keep it simple, then everyone can do the exercises. “And when you add a fun, structured environment of supportive women, led by certified fitness professionals, participants really thrive. “I believe that with my 14 years of history and experience, this will be the fastest growing women’s boot camp on the Sunshine Coast,” said Bianca. Women of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels are welcome. The ‘progressive programming’ of the SculptLife Personal Training Boot Camp for Women is perfect for beginners and advanced fitness enthusiasts alike. Cecily and Colin It is a busy time of the year for independent retail owners, with the routine stock count to finalise the end of financial year now in progress. Never before have we been faced with such a task in the 12 years of doing business. The downsize of the trading address to Turner Street has required some hard decisions, but one must continually move forward to a new and exciting year. So there will be great bargains to be found in store over the coming days. The competitive nature of kitchen equipment has created a vast variety of innovative designs. The new Deco Pen for cake decorating now in store has created excitement for young mums and grandmas to produce artistic designs easily to impress the family. The trend to back to basic cooking in the family home is heartening to see, parents are seeing the benefit of healthy eating. Programs like Masterchef and Poh’s Kitchen have increased our awareness of what we can also achieve at home. We are creating family memories for our children. Why not call by and see what is available? Meat mincers have just been unpacked and are selling at a good price. We are situated in the Post Office building and ample off street parking is available. Call in and say hi to Cecily and Colin, ‘your local kitchen shop’, or give us a call on 5439 0788. We still carry a wide range of gift lines to suit everyone.

Glass House Mountains Rotary Contributed by George MacKenzie
On June 3, Rotary distributed money tins around businesses in Landsborough and Beerwah for ‘Give Me 5 For Kids’ sponsored by radio station 92 MixFM. These tins were left there for a month then collected. Many thanks to the generous people of these communities for their donations. On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, barbeques were held at the CWA Hall, Beerwah Community Recycling Depot and Woodgrove Estate, where money was also raised for ‘Give Me 5 For Kids’. Thank you to the guys from Men’s Shed who manned the barbeque on Friday and Saturday. The money raised goes to the Children’s Cancer Ward at Nambour Hospital. Rotary donated $352.00 to this worthy cause.

Our monthly concert for the elderly was held on July 5. Lola welcomed all, then recited a poem by Helen Steiner Rice entitled ‘Just friends’. The Mountain Rainbows opened their first bracket with a rowdy version of ‘Good morning, good morning’ following by songs with a Latin rhythm, which included ‘La Cucaracha’. John and Dolly performed ‘Embraceable you and again’, John’s solo being ‘Hey there’ and ‘Blue moon’. Trio, Wyn, Joyce and Loretta sang ‘Marianne’ and ‘Vaya con dios’. Pam played guitar whilst singing two Slim Dusty favourites, ‘The pub with no beer' followed with the answer to ‘The pub with no beer’. ‘The Castanettes’ mimed along to lively Latin music. Dolly’s humorous monologue was entitled ‘How to give a cat a pill’. Frank and Pam presented a Rick and Thel song ‘I bet I know what you’re gonna say’. Pam and Dolly then performed ‘Red sails in the sunset’. The rainbows closed the concert with ‘Quando, quando, quando’ and then wished all ‘Good Luck’ as we waved them ‘Good Bye!’ Ev and the girls served lunch. Lola then thanked Frank our MC, and Marie our accompanist for playing keyboard, Garry and Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club who provided the venue, also Matilda Fruit Barn for their support, and Shirl at the door. Also a big thank you for the effort ‘The Rainbows’ contribute each month to give these folk from the homes and enjoyable morning out.
Beerwah Lions
On Saturday, July 3 a great crowd gathered at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports club to witness the incoming officer installation ceremony conducted by Kilcoy Lion Lorna Sherwood (see Out and About, page 20). The blind cricket match was again reactivated and a ‘Newcomers to Glasshouse’ inaugural welcome dinner was run in April 2010. This is to be repeated in the new Lions year so new residents can receive a very warm welcome. Recycled cans earned $4,621.60 from the Lions cash for cans project, these funds are all returned to the community and help keep Glasshouse Country a tidy place in which to reside. This recycling project has been running since 1988; see Lions the first Saturday of each month. Glasshouse Country Business Directory raised some $10,000 with grateful thanks to business establishments utilising this service and supporting local community and needy charitable organisations. Lions ask members of the public to give your business to them first. Our contributions: $2,648.00 was spent on youth projects; $875.00 donated to medical research; $2,295.00 including $1,000.00 to Haiti disaster appeal went to other groups; $1,600.00 for motorised blowers for two Rural Fire Brigades; $1,000.00 to Beerwah High school chaplaincy; $1,000.00 to BADYAC; $1,000.00 to Lions emergency accommodation centre; $1,000.00 to Glasshouse Country Care; $ 500.00 to the Men’s Shed; $750.00 to Landsborough Museum; $750.00 to Peachester Historical Society, Beerwah Auxiliary was recognised for their ongoing support to Lions at functions and fundraising for their very special charities. Another beautiful quilt made by Joy Wise was raffled; two street stalls were run and the fun events of a progressive luncheon and a Christmas dinner. Lion Ken Loveday is looking forward to his role as club president. See page 28 for more Community Group updates

Jorgi’s bush adventure
I would very much like to send a big ‘Thank You’ message to all of the residents in the Old Gympie Road, Mt Beerwah Road and others nearby, for all the help and courtesy shown to our family in searching for our lost dog last week. Our wonderful pet, Jorji, a seven-year-old female tri-colour Scotch Collie (Smooth-coated) did a runner from a birthday party at my son’s property on Old Gympie Road around 12.00noon on Sunday, July 4. My son distributed flyers door to door, and put up posters on the Monday, and we did the rounds of what he hadn’t covered on Tuesday, including leaving a flyer with a road crew on Old Gympie Road. We were heading back to pick up more flyers around 1.30pm when another vehicle turned into the property just ahead of us. Happily, it was a
resident from the Mt Beerwah Road area, who had happened to check with the road crew in passing as to whether they knew of any missing dog - they gave her our flyer - and the rest, as they say, is now history. Serendipity! Jorji had presented herself to this lovely lady on the previous (Monday) evening, for dinner and a comfortable sheltered night, and was still there when we turned up on Tuesday. She was thrilled to see us, of course, but ‘what took you so long?’ We will never know why she took off, or what sort of a bush adventure she had, but was by then obviously looking for civilised food and shelter. Quite a number of folk called my son to advise of sightings on the Monday and Tuesday, which helped us focus on the relevant areas. Everyone was, without exception, very courteous, concerned and helpful. It certainly re-affirms your faith in human nature, and in the innate kindness of people. Cheryl Addison-Mesh, Buderim

Car boot sale
These two boys can’t wait to see you at their footy club’s great fundraiser. Glasshouse Hinterland AFC will be holding a car boot sale at their home ground in Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough on Sunday, July 25. There will be a jumping castle, from Coast Castles, for the kids and a coffee van, from Cafe 2 U, for the parents. The club will be holding a sausage sizzle with egg and bacon burgers as well as selling chocolates and drinks. But we need lots of other people to join us with their crafts, plants or trash and treasure. People who would like to have a stall can ring Renae on 0439 796 198. Each stall will cost $15.00 with proceeds going towards running the club. Stall holders are asked to arrive between 7.00am - 7.45am and will be selling their goods from 8.00am - 12.00noon. The junior AFL club will be hosting the Under 8 and 10 program with teams from Glasshouse, Meridan, Kawana and Caloundra playing from 9.00am - 12.00noon. We would love you to stay and cheer the kids as they play. The boys will be kept busy helping their mum paint signs to hang up around town! Vicki Bauer Glasshouse Hiterland AFC

GCCC counts down to Open Day 2010 In 2010 Glasshouse Country Christian College celebrates 10 years educating students in the Glasshouse area. The College is grateful to God for His provision of impressive facilities and a wonderful College community of staff, students and volunteers. The nearly completed Resource Centre will enhance learning opportunities with its up to date technology and fabulous spaces for individual and group learning, housing not just the library but numerous classrooms, staff rooms and meeting rooms. Of course, a school is only as fine as its people. Recent achievements include top performance by the College’s first graduating Year 12 cohort in 2009 and two percentage trophies for the highest points scored per student population in district sporting events – athletics and swimming. There are also individual achievers like Dylan Stevenson, College Captain who has received a prestigious Defence Forces Education Award, and Sarah Davis, Queensland delegate at the Youth Australian & New Zealand
Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS) Conference in Sydney. Exciting initiatives include the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program for Prep to Year 3, an interactive program of lessons where the students participate in planting, harvesting and preparing healthy food. In the secondary arena, students are now able to enhance their design and technology learning using a brand new Roland milling/routing machine which, together with VCarve software creates 3D forms and moulds, mirroring what happens in industry. Students will design and manufacture GCCC souvenirs for the upcoming P&F Funfest and the 10 Year celebration event in October. This process will be demonstrated at Open Day. Open Day is a time to welcome families to the College to explore the facilities, see student performances, meet staff and students and ask questions. This is also a perfect opportunity to discuss future enrolment with the Registrar.
A complimentary Devonshire tea is available for visitors who complete the tour and the popular ‘eagle hunt’ gives children the chance to win a family movie pass to the Birch, Carrol and Coyle cinemas. There will also be a free sausage sizzle. The Open Day will be on Saturday 17 July, from 10am to 2 pm. Please visit and you’re bound to be impressed by Glasshouse Country Christian College.

Organ donors
Out and About
Organ donations are becoming more common in Australia, with recent figures showing that it is becoming more common as awareness of the programme increases. In June this year, there were some 31 Australian organ donations, the highest June figure in a decade. There have been 149 organ donations in Australia so far this year. In 2009, there were some 247 donors, who saved the lives or transformed the lives of around 800 recipient Australians. However, there remain some 1,700 people on waiting lists for donations. I encourage everyone to consider becoming an organ donor, making sure they discuss their wishes with their family members. For more information visit www.donatelife.gov.au
Pension changes for Veterans
The Liberal National team has advised veterans that it will, if elected, introduce new indexation arrangements for Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits Scheme (DFRDB) members, which will benefit Australia’s veterans and ex-service personnel in Fisher. These changes recognised the unique nature of military service. It would impact some 4,204 veterans in Fisher and 4,094 in Fairfax. Under a Liberal National government, from July 1, 2011 those DFRDB members aged 55 years or older will have their military superannuation pensions indexed to the greater of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Male Total Average Weekly Earnings (MTAWE) or the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI).
Farm safety
Water safety programmes often focus on swimming between the flags at the beach, but an unacceptable number of tragedies occur in bodies of water on farms. People are more likely to think of farm hazards as involving machinery and the like, and it is rare to think of farms as being dangerous water environments, but it is something for all of us to take into consideration as there can be many bodies of water which can present potential dangers, especially for young children. For details about the Royal Life Saving Society farm safety campaign and entering the latest Swim and Survive Competition about ‘Water Safety at the Farm’, visit www. royallifesaving.com.au
The best thing about Parliament having a break for winter is that I have a lot more time to get out amongst the community. It has been a busy few weeks since getting back from Kokoda – I was invited to attend a graduation ceremony for the Queensland Correctional Services and had the opportunity to congratulate a number of Glass House locals on their decision to start a career in this field. These guys and girls do a really tough job and I wish them all the best. I also attended the Caloundra Cup Carnival last weekend – now I’m not normally a betting man but I must say it was exciting seeing my fellow race-goers placing their $2.00 bets and cheering their chosen horse to the line.
Australian of the Year Awards
I know it is hard to believe we are in July already and before we know it we will be celebrating Australia Day 2011. Nominations for Australian of the Year 2011 have now opened with forms available by visiting website www.australianoftheyear.org.au or calling my office on 5495 2666. These awards provide a great opportunity for us to publicly acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding efforts of individuals in our community.
BSA Discussion Paper
Shadow Minister for Public Works and LNP Member for Currumbin, Jann Stuckey MP, recently launched a discussion paper entitled ‘Regulating the Building Industry and Consumer Protection’. Ms Stuckey is encouraging you to have your say on issues relating to the Queensland Building Services Authority. We really do need to ensure periodic reviews occur to make sure current regulatory schemes provide suitable protection for consumers. This discussion paper has been designed to highlight some of the concerns raised by consumers and examine the current level of protection. It will also provide a means for public comments and will put forward solutions to any problems raised. If you would like a copy of the discussion paper please call my office on 5495 2666.

Budget boost to Glass House region
Flexilink taxi trial extended

If you are a business who can offer our seniors help or advice with mobility aids, beds, chairs, scooters, activities, discount days, travel advice, meal deliveries, legal help, financial advice, health care services, funeral services, or anything else associated with this special week, then this feature is ideal for you.
Following a successful two month trial, council is extending its Flexilink taxi trial into the next financial year, bridging the gap in public transport links across the Coast. The Flexilink trial services Conondale via Witta to Maleny, and Glenview to Mooloolah Valley. Residents wishing to use the Flexilink service must book their trip by calling 1300 511 163. The services operate on a pre-booked basis and run three return trips per day, Monday to Saturday. Vehicles travel along designated routes and commuters are required to meet the taxis along the route. A single trip is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children / concession. Council continues to welcome feedback from service users to shape the future operations of the Flexilink trial.

Council acknowledges volunteers contribution
A report was presented to Council last week to celebrate the 2,000 volunteers who work enthusiastically across the region assisting in the provision of services. ‘Volunteers Engaged by Council’ offers council’s ongoing commitment to the support, appreciation and acknowledgement of its volunteers. It notes volunteer policy and guidelines are being developed to ensure a co-ordinated approach to volunteers across council. It estimated that our conservation volunteers alone save council $1.02 million a year by contributing 34,000 hours to council-run programs, assisting council to achieve its goal of environmental sustainability.

Aged care a major concern – ahead of employment, education and the environment More Queenslanders are concerned about aged care than they are about employment, education and the environment, according to a new poll. The online survey was undertaken by the Campaign for Care of Older Australians (CCOA) to launch The Grand Plan – a new vision for the care of older Australians. The poll revealed that aged care was not just a worry for older people, with men and women of all ages acknowledging that it rated ahead of employment, education and the environment as an area of greatest concern; 90 per cent of respondents agreed aged care should be an entitlement; 97 per cent supported increased government funding; and 96 per cent agreed that those who can’t afford to pay should receive additional assistance.

CCOA Chair Greg Mundy said respondents also highlighted easy access to in home services and better links between hospitals and aged care services. He said more than 60 per cent of respondents said it was difficult or almost impossible to access aged care services. “The poll reinforces that Australia’s aged care issues must be addressed. Our vision for greater access and improved choice as part of a properly funded and regulated system paves the way for government action. The Grand Plan includes proposals for an independent cost of care study, increased funding, flexible payment options for accommodation, the creation of a single community care program, and opportunities to address workforce issues. “Forty per cent of poll respondents said they feared losing their independence as they aged. The Grand Plan call for all political parties to commit to the promotion of independence and wellness would go some way to alleviating these fears. The Grand Plan also calls for demanddriven services, long-term access to care, more choice of services and flexible funding and payment options. “It is important that our industry and consumers work with government to ensure that we get the system right for the next generation of older Australians,” he said. “Our dedicated website allows people to share their stories, send a postcard to a grand person in their life and tell politicians that aged care must be a priority. “Our Grand Plan is for everyone, including the government and opposition parties, to play a role in reforming aged care and celebrating the lives of older people – the people who made Australia great.” For more details visit www.thegrandplan.com.au

and screening, revealing lower survival rates for cancers typically detected when more advanced. Director of Cancer Registries for Cancer Council Queensland, Professor Joanne Aitken, said while five-year survival had improved since the 1980s, survival was still poor for types of cancers which tend to be detected in advanced stages of disease. “The report shows that about two out of three people (67 per cent) diagnosed with cancer in Queensland will survive for at least five years after they are diagnosed. This is a significant increase since the 1980s, when five-year survival was 55 per cent,” she said. “Overall, this improvement in survival can be attributed to a combination of earlier diagnosis and improvements in treatment. “However, survival remains poor for cancers which tend to be detected when they are well advanced, such as lung cancer (13 per cent), which is still the single largest cause of cancer deaths in Queensland. The report also found that the number of people diagnosed with cancer in Queensland is increasing annually by over four per cent for men and about three per cent for women. The report reveals there are currently over 155,000 Queenslanders living with a diagnosis of cancer. One in two men and one in three women living in Queensland will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. The full report is available on Cancer Council Queensland’s website www.cancerqld.org.au

Join us at a family bush dance Bush dancing is fantastic, fun and energetic for the whole family, no matter your age. ‘Mama Syb and the Bush Rats’ including dance caller John Wright will have you swinging around the dance floor in no time at all. John, our caller, has loved music all of his life and has been playing in Bush Dance Bands since the mid nineties. Those of you that have had the opportunity to be at one of their gigs would already know what a great singer/entertainer John is. He and other members of the band have also been involved with the Woodford Folk Festival. Come and enjoy a great evening of bush dancing and at the same time raise funds for the Ebenezer Kids in Zambia. The best thing about bush dancing is that no experience is necessary. It is not line dancing, square dancing, or country music dancing but is taught as you swing around the floor. Grace and poise are not what makes it fun. Learning, laughing, making mistakes, and doing it together with other people guarantees a memorable night. All proceeds from the dance will go to support the work of Friends of Ebenezer, a local group who have made it their job to raise awareness and funds to look after a growing orphanage, school and farm in Zambia. See their website www.friendsofebenezeraustralia.com When: August 7, 6.00pm at the Macadamia Nut Shed 209 Burgum Road, Maleny. Adult $10.00, Family $25.00 (two adults and two children under 18), extra children $5.00 each. Delicious affordable food for sale. Ekka organisers keep ticket price rise to just $1.00 The cost of going to Queensland’s biggest annual event, the Ekka, will cost visitors just $1.00 extra this year, thanks to the efforts of organisers to keep prices as low as possible as families battle skyrocketing living costs. Announcing special tickets offers now available online, RNA chief executive Jonathan Tunny said the RNA made a conscious decision to keep gate prices as low as possible. More than 70 per cent of the showgrounds is dedicated to free activities. Where else can you pay one entry fee and enjoy a full day out at no extra cost, including the night time program, free concerts and more? Mr Tunny said the best way to gain the most value from the Ekka this year was to visit the new look Ekka website to buy tickets, plan your day and for the first time build your very own showbag wishlist. “Our new look Ekka website has just gone live and this is where you can also choose from discount ticket packages which offers entry plus great value carnival coupon savings,’’ he said. “These package deals are available online at the Ekka website and end on Ekka eve (August 4).”

Be floored by the transformation! Are you contemplating a renovation or in the middle of a project and looking for some inspiration? New to Glasshouse is an innovative new product that is transforming tired old concrete floors and surfaces with a fresh, bright, attractive and durable finish. Seamless epoxy flake flooring is a unique sealing and decorative system of coloured acrylic flakes that are applied to a specially formulated two pack epoxy base coat. It is then sealed in place with a hard wearing final surface of two or more coats of a two pack epoxy finish. The resulting surface is an extremely durable and attractive floor and surface finish which remains particularly resistant to spills, most chemicals, bacteria, weather and traffic for many years. Jimmee Gainsford of Suncoast Epoxy Flooring said customers are amazed by the results.
“The response from customers is incredible as they watch the transformation of their badly stained or marked concrete,” Jimmee said. Jimmee said not only does it restore the surface, it is a quick and cost effective way of adding value to the home. “Whether you are looking at selling or just want to improve the look and value of your home, epoxy flake flooring is a great option that won’t cost the earth, but will deliver a million dollar result.” As a special offer to Glasshouse Country News readers, Jimmee is offering a $50 fuel or Bunnings voucher for any bookings made until the end of August. Glasshouse Country View Club Contributed by Heather Burton
Twelve members of the View Club enjoyed our monthly outing on July 7 to B and B Hobby Ceramics at Peachester. What a fabulous morning we had! Our two hostesses guided us with our painting techniques and colours. The morning was cold but we were greeted with tea and coffee and warmth. Our monthly meeting and luncheon will be held on Wednesday, July 21 at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. The guest speaker will be Chris Barrett, on behalf of macular degeneration. Many in our community know of someone who suffers from this condition. If you are interested in joining us, ring Lorraine 5494 8444, or Elaine 5493 3935. ‘View’ is Voices, Interests and Education of Women. All funds go to support the Smith Family and all its charities and the Learning for Life Students. We meet the first and third Wednesday of each month.
If you sent in a contribution and it doesn't appear in this edition, please note that due to space, it has been held over until the following week's edition.

REVERSE MORTGAGES - FOR RETIREES If you are aged 60 or over, ask your Smartline Adviser how a reverse mortgage could fund your lifestyle without selling the family home. It’s a common plight for seniors to find that although they are asset-rich, all of their money is tied up in their home. Reverse mortgages are designed to improve the living standards of seniors by providing cash for everyday living expenses and purchases, such as a new car or a holiday. ‘Applicants can now borrow up to 45 per cent of the value of
their home depending on their age,’ explains Teresa Harrison, Smartline Adviser. ‘Funds can be advanced in one payment on settlement or taken as needed. There are no repayments required over the life of the loan, with all interest fees and charges capitalised to the loan.’ You still retain full ownership of your property and can continue to live in it for as long as you wish. There is no set loan term and repayment of the loan is deferred until the property is sold, the borrowers are no
longer living in the house, or the borrowers have passed on. Lenders do apply strict conditions to reverse mortgages. For instance, before funding can take place, all applicants are required to seek independent financial and legal advice According to Teresa, this is also in the best interests of the applicant. ‘You should have a full understanding of the financial implications before proceeding, including how it may affect your social security and
financial position,’ she says. Applicants are also advised to discuss the long term effects of a reverse mortgage with family members. Some reverse mortgage providers offer a safety net that ensures that should the borrower pass away the amount owing will never be more than Call Teresa Harrison on the net sale proceeds of the home. 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 www.smartline.com.au/tharrison A wide range of reverse mortgage products are available through Smartline. Call Smartline’s Teresa Harrison to find out your options. JULY 14 2010 |

Cash rate break a good decision during lull
With consumer and business spending, building approvals, housing finance and retail sales showing lacklustre results, Australia’s largest independently-owned mortgage broker, Mortgage Choice, believes the Reserve Bank has made an accurate decision in keeping the cash rate at 4.5 per cent. Existing and potential property owners will be elated to hear the cash rate is on hold for a second month, as they reassess their budget for the new financial year. It means lenders will be much less likely to move mortgage interest rates up as winter takes hold. Local Mortgage Choice franchise owner Robert Harney said a ‘wait and see’ approach from the RBA is what borrowers need at the moment. “Interest rates stood at an emergency setting over much of 2009, but they rose very quickly from then on and caught many people unaware.” “We have not yet seen the full effect of the six official rate rises from October to May, or the effect of further mortgage rate increases by a number of lenders. “Although employment is solid, our resource sector is strong and many property markets are moving at a healthy pace, consumer spending is subdued and sentiment has dropped, just as housing finance demand has over several consecutive months now. We’re also seeing a slowing of housing prices and global economic uncertainty continuing. “Slowed housing finance demand and prices is a good thing, however, for those looking to enter the market. Less competition means some local areas may become a buyers’ market. Anyone with a healthy deposit or equity, a steady income, few debts, a good credit record and solid employment, may find they are well placed to build upon their financial portfolio now by buying property. “Greater credit should also be given to Australian mortgage holders, the majority of whom are coping well with 10 year average standard variable interest rates. “Clever borrowers used the relief of decades-low rates over late 2008 and most of 2009 to get ahead with their repayments and prepare for changes to rates and their financial situation. Many continue to do so. Our 2010 Recent First Homeowners Survey found 64 per cent of respondents were making extra repayments, with the majority contributing as much as possible. This not only helps a borrower create a financial buffer, it shaves time off their loan term and off the overall interest owed. *Moody’s Investors Service Delinquencies report Q1 2010

‘Our Stories’
One of the things that I love about my job as school chaplain is hearing people’s stories – it is a real privilege. During my seven years of chaplaincy I have heard many stories - all of them unique. I am amazed by how precious our lives are. It is a very powerful thing when we actually stop for a moment to take stock of our lives – taking time to consider and reflect. Our stories are significant. To stop and reflect gives us the chance to see how we are going with our lives, to identify what we want to improve or change. Are we happy with our story so far, if not, how would we change it? Now, the thing I love most about Christianity is the fact that the bible clearly describes again and again through commandments, stories and parables how much God cares for and loves us. This belief flies in the face of our modern society which treats individuals as ‘consumers’, ‘a number’ or ‘a statistic’. It is mindboggling how God can know us all intimately (there are over

6 billion people on the planet) but I believe that we can see God’s attention to detail all around us when we take the time to look. Our lives and our stories are precious despite the challenges, heartaches and stuff ups... in fact, that is when we can truly shine. God also has a way of making good things come out of bad situations. As I write about this I do not want to come across as patronising, I don’t believe that I am oversimplifying things either – but only you know the magnitude of your life experiences, and the value of what you have been through. So my challenge to you (and myself) is to stop and reflect on your life so far, I pray that God would show you how much he is with you each step of the way. I also pray that you would be able to live each day of your future on purpose – striving to live your life well for God. The bible says that Jesus has ‘come to give us life and life abundantly!’ Now I think that is worth talking about.

Backyard bits Paralysis ticks out in force! Ixodes holocyclus commonly known as the paralysis tick is small but lethal, killing thousands of dogs and cats alone per year. If the flea is a soldier, the paralysis tick is the tank of ectoparasites (a parasite living on the exterior of an animal). Ticks are most prevalent autumn to spring, however may occur at any time of year. Typical Queensland weather of humid and overcast conditions can initiate an outbreak of paralysis ticks. Prevention is better than cure and early intervention could save your pet’s life.
Tips from Graeme Lean and Associates: Paralysis ticks can be identified by their grey body with legs that bunch closely near their head. Daily searching of your pet for these ectoparasites is the best prevention. FEEL for ticks, once attached they can be as small as 2mm and will engorge to five times that size in a few days. If your pet has a long coat consider having it clipped short which can make tick searches much easier. Ticks commonly attach around the head, check around eyes, nose and ears, also under the collar. Check legs, between toes and under the tail along with a thorough search of the rest of the body. Once a paralysis tick attaches it releases deadly toxins into your pet which has a paralysis effect on muscles. This causes respiratory difficulty, inability to swallow, and hind limb muscles are affected causing difficulty moving. If your pet displays one or more of these symptoms seek veterinary advice immediately: • Wobbly hind legs • Difficulty swallowing • Excessive drooling and/or vomiting • Laboured breathing and/or grunting • Change in voice • Coughing/gagging If you find a tick, twist and pull it out. Put in a small container with methylated spirits. Continue your search for more ticks (as often there can be more than one) then seek veterinary advice immediately. Do not apply any chemical to the tick whilst it is attached to your pet, as this may stimulate the tick to release more toxins and may irritate your pet’s skin. Even if your pet shows no symptoms following a paralysis tick, still have your pet checked by a veterinarian (don’t forget to take the offending parasite with you!) Whilst the tick is no longer attached to your pet, there maybe residual deadly toxins within your pet’s system. These toxins migrate from the skin to muscle receptors which can take up to 48 hours for your pet to show symptoms of paralysis tick poisoning. Keep your pet calm and cool, increased body temperature and exercise will accelerate paralysis tick symptoms. Do not offer any food or water. Put ‘Champ’ or ‘Puss’ into the car and get to the vet pronto. Early treatment is much more successful and cheaper than a ‘wait and see’ approach and starting treatment later. Other prevention of ticks: Tick collar, weekly spray / rinse with a Pyrethrum based rinse, spot on treatments, oral treatments. However there is no Ph: 5439 0999 product on the market Fax: 5439 0077 that 100 per cent paintplacebeerwah@tpg.com.au 1/28 Simpson St, Beerwah Q. 4519 guarantees a paralysis tick will not attach to your pet, so daily tick searching is still essential. Ask your Veterinarian for advice. News in brief
Council targets sustainable transport outcomes
Sunshine Coast Council will spend nearly $100 million over the next five years on transport infrastructure, providing practical, efficient and reliable alternatives to car dependence. The funding boost outlined in council’s latest budget includes provision for fast, frequent and more reliable bus routes, integrated transport planning, dedicated bikeways and walkways. Council’s decision to endorse the Public Transport Levy for another year will assist in funding these initiatives. Integrated Transport Councillor Vivien Griffin said Levy funding is used exclusively for public transport initiatives. “In the coming financial year, council will deliver a number of projects dedicated to providing safe, accessible and efficient alternatives to using the car,” Cr Griffin said. She said Council is extending its Flexilink taxi service and Council Cabs—both services which bridge the gaps in our public transport network. “This council is very conscious of the need to respond to transport shortfalls in the Hinterland. Both initiatives were trialled last year and proved successful, especially in regional areas of the Coast. Council has also allocated $7.7 million for the improvement of the Coast’s pathway network, adding an extra 25km in the coming financial year. $1.2 million is allocated to extending the Coast’s local pathway network and $6.5 million will be used for the design and construction of strategic pathways in 26 different locations across the region. Another initiative is the provision of cycling facilities such as green cycle lanes. Council has been encouraging residents to be TravelSmart and this year will be providing the infrastructure to make those journey’s safer. Council’s capital works program includes essential public transport infrastructure such as bus terminals and shelters, cycle pathways and end of trip facilities, streetscaping and transport innovation projects.” For other integrated transport initiatives funded in the current budget, visit Council’s website at www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au JULY 14 2010 |

With representatives from three age groups U11's, U12's and U13's, they participated in three separate missions, ‘Death Match’, ‘Capture The Flag’ and ‘Last Man Standing’ for some real club bonding. With camouflage overalls, hats, guns and unlimited ammo supplied, they really looked the part. A fantastic time was had by all and thanks to the crew at Laser Assault.
Beerwah Senior Rugby League Beerwah Bulldogs July 11 Report The Bulldogs travelled up to Kawana to take on the Dolphins on Sunday looking to continue the good form they showed at Beerwah the week before. The Reserve Grade team could not repeat the type of footy they played against Maroochydore the previous week to also go down by a wide margin. Are YOU the BOQ’s number 1 Brisbane Lions fan? Seventy three year old Sean O’Hara has seen a lot of AFL in his life. He remembers laughing when, on relocating from Melbourne in 1986 to the Gold Coast, he heard a persistent rumour that Queensland was to host their own AFL team. He thought it was a joke. Three consecutive premierships later, the Brisbane Lions are no joke, and Sean O’Hara has only missed six of their home games since their very first at Carrara. That’s a fan! Could the Gold Coast’s O’Hara, a Foundation Lions Member, Members Hall of Fame Inductee and President of the Gold Lions (the Gold Coast Supporters Group of the Brisbane Lions) be BOQ’s number 1 Brisbane Lions fan? BOQ aims to find out, having launched a national search to find their leading fan. Brisbane Lions Vice-Captains Luke Power (pictured with Sean O’Hara) and Simon Black, Assistant Coach Jade Rawlings, former Brisbane Lions great Richard Champion, and BOQ CEO David Liddy launched the national search to find BOQ’s number 1 Lions Fan - the person most passionate, the character most colourful in their commitment to the Club, and the one who most lives and breathes the Brisbane Lions! The search will finish on Wednesday, August 18 at 5.00pm and BOQ’s number 1 Lions Fan will be revealed on Friday, August 20. The reward for such unbridled Brisbane Lions loyalty will be fan-fare like no other. BOQ is rewarding fans’ loyalty and passion for the Club by giving them the opportunity to win the ultimate Brisbane Lions experience including special access to a Brisbane Lions training session, seats near the interchange
bench alongside the umpires and ground manager, innersanctum access on match-day and much more. This type of access into the heart of the Club has never been offered to a Brisbane Lions fan before. The BOQ number 1 Lions Fan will be rewarded with the following money-can’tbuy experiences surrounding the Brisbane Lions’ Round 22 match against the Sydney Swans at the Gabba. 1. Gain special access to the final Brisbane Lions home match training session and receive a football to be signed by the players 2. Take a friend to the Brisbane Lions prematch Inner Sanctum experience to see your team warming up 3. Run onto the field with Brisbane Lions mascot Bernie ‘Gabba’ Vegas 4. Be interviewed by the Match Day MC in front of the Gabba crowd 5. Take a friend to sit on the sidelines alongside the umpires and ground manager for the first half of the match, then enjoy the exclusive and fully catered BOQ Blue Room suite for the second half of the match 6. Get a pair of Brisbane Lions player’s footy boots creatively painted by a child from the Royal Children’s Hospital 7. Walk away with a great Brisbane Lions merchandise pack
Sean Ohara and Luke Power How to enter the Search for the BOQ #1 Lions Fan 1. Fans can upload their photos, stories and/ or videos to the official BOQ number 1 Lions Fan micro-site - www.number1fan.com.au 2. Fans can record a message and enter at the number1 Fan Locker-Room which will be set up at the Gabba’s main entrance at the following homes matches: Saturday, July 31 (Round 18 v Melbourne) and Sunday, August 15 (Round 20 v Adelaide) 3. Fans will also be able to enter via roving photographers located around the Gabba precinct at the following homes matches: Saturday, July 31 (Round 18 v Melbourne) and Sunday, August 15 (Round 20 v Adelaide)
Hard fought final
Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club
Two very worthy teams competed in the final of the first mixed netball season. The Swifts and the Quiffs ended the season with an equal number of points and the final was extremely close. Throughout the game the scoreline changed goal for goal, with the Quiffs finally managing to gain the upper hand, defeating the Swifts 33 to 31. Thank you to the large crowd that turned up on a State of Origin night to cheer on the players. The game was an exciting curtain raiser to the rugby league everyone rushed home to watch. A new season of mixed netball commences this week, on Wednesday, July 14. New teams are welcome and there are vacancies in some teams for male and female players. An elderly couple had dinner at another couple’s house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said “last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great... I would recommend it very highly.” The other man said, “what is the name of the restaurant?” The first man thought and thought and finally said “what is the name of that flower your give to
someone you love? You know... the one that’s red and has thorns.” “Do you mean a rose?” “Yes, that’s the one,’ replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, “Rose, what’s the name of that restaurant we went to last night?” Submitted by Gwen and Gary Landsborough
