Hi everyone

Hi everyone Well obviously the biggest news to happen recently is for the Federal election to be called. Not that it comes as a surprise to anyone but at least it has been made official and we all know that August 21 is the actual date. If you are 18 years and over and you are entitled to vote, you would have needed to enrol by last Monday, however if you are already on the electoral role but have moved recently and need to change your address you have until 8.00pm Thursday, July 22 to change your details. To find out how this can be done you can check the Australian Electoral Commission’s website at www.aec.gov.au or you can call into the Electoral office in Caloundra located at 130 Bulcock Street, or give the office a call on 132 326. While there have been some changes to the Federal Electoral boundaries since the last election,

readers that live from Beerburrum to Mooloolah, Palmview / Glenview are still within Fisher. Once the candidates have completed their nominations we will be keen to include a profile of each of them in GCNews, and if you have any specific questions you would like to ask candidates please send them through to editorial@gcnews. com.au Also if you would like to submit letters about the election please be advised that we will not print any letters without a name – and you will need to supply full contact details when letters are submitted. Also you should keep in mind that our letters pages are all about focusing on issues and not personal attack of individuals. Let the politics continue.

Aldi a step closer

In less than two months time, hinterland shoppers will be on countdown as they track the progress of a brand new Aldi when construction commences on their 1,415m² supermarket in Simpson Street, Beerwah. The supermarket, to be located at 76 – 80 Simpson Street, will also feature the privately owned site next door at 74 Simpson Street, which offers 650m² of specialist retail facilities to compliment the Aldi supermarket. It is anticipated that both centres will be finished by mid 2011. Aldi appealed a number of council conditions of their approval, but it is understood that appeal has been withdrawn leaving construction to commence later this year. Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz has welcomed Aldi’s decision to invest in Beerwah which further establishes the town’s position as the key regional centre for the Glasshouse

Country Region and a town recognised for significant growth potential in the State Government’s South East Regional Plan. Cr Grosskreutz commented that the site was a key element in the development of Beerwah’s commercial precinct as it is the first commercial site visible on entry to the town and should help to reinvigorate the southern end of established Simpson Street retail strip. “There is rarely a day when my office is not asked when the Aldi development is going to happen,” Cr Grosskreutz said. “It is evident that a percentage of locals are travelling to other centres such as Morayfield and Caloundra to access the Aldi product and Beerwah would like to see this product closer to home. "With other specialist retail shops approved right next to Aldi this new commercial development will reinvest into our community and economy into the future.”

Locals give new post box the thumbs up The long awaited and much anticipated new postal box at Beerwah Marketplace has been given the thumbs up by locals, who have been quick to utilise the new service. The new postal box was officially launched last Thursday by the Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper, together with the Australia Post Manager of Sunshine Coast Mail Operations, Roberta King. “This is a significant day for the residents of Beerwah and the surrounding communities because it means posting their mail has just got a lot more convenient,” Mr Slipper said. “The Beerwah Marketplace is a central shopping destination for many residents – from Beerwah, Peachester, Landsborough and Glass House Mountains - so it is an ideal location for this new posting box.” Mr Slipper met with Australia Post on several occasions, asking that it consider the new box at Beerwah Marketplace. “I thank Roberta King and Australia Post for installing this new box and I am pleased to have been able to assist in making sure this was achieved,” Mr Slipper said. One of the first people to take advantage of the new service was Elva Dimsey, who lives at the Eden Retirement Village. “This is much more convenient, I am going back to the village to let everyone know about it,” Elva said.

“I think everyone there will be elated – the steps at the Post Office in Turner street are not very convenient, so this will make posting letters much easier,” she said. Nathan Hausknecht, who works in Woolworths, agreed that the new postal box was more convenient. “It’s more convenient for everyone that uses Beerwah Market Place and wants to post items,” he said. Nathan Hausknecht Helene Clarke of Beerwah said although the postal box should have been there when the Marketplace opened, Peter Slipper deserved a big pat on the back for his dedication. “It will also greatly help the elderly, the disabled and people who might find it hard Helene Clarke to use the steps at the Turner Street post box,” she said.

Australia Post Manager of Sunshine Coast Mail Operations, Roberta King with the Hon Peter Slipper, MP and Cr Anna Grosskreutz

John O’Donohue of Beerwah said common sense had finally prevailed, while Sue Bilby, also of Beerwah, said unless they (Australia Post) introduce a stamp dispenser as well, there was still a need to use the Post Office in Turner Street.

Jamie Smart, of Glasshouse said her mother would find it very convenient. “She normally does an extra trip while in Morayfield to post letters, now she can use the new post box while doing her shopping,” Jamie said.

Katrina Kingdom was riding her five year old quarter horse cross Appolossa Kye along Coonowrin Road with her mother Lynda Kingdom after school last Tuesday when a dog raced out from a yard and started barking and growling aggressively at Kye. Distressed, Kye took off at a gallop while a frightened Katrina held tightly on. Shocked and scared, Katrina said she didn’t know what to do, but held on as tightly as she could, before being thrown from the horse nearly one kilometre up the road. Meanwhile, after Kye had bolted, the dog, described as a blue heeler cross, then turned on Lynda and her horse Mika, with the dog’s owner then calling it back to the property. Lynda then took off down the road after losing sight of Katrina and Kye, and found her lying on the side of the road, shocked and traumatised and being comforted by two passing motorists who had stopped to assist. Lynda, a former veterinary nurse who now runs her own pet grooming business, was lost for words after the ordeal. “That’s why we have strict dog laws,” Lynda said. “That dog should have been tied up, or put behind a fence.” Lynda intends to lodge a complaint with Council, while Katrina, who spent most of last week at home recovering, said she was too scared to get back on any horse any time soon. Lynda said she would like to thank the driver of the Hanson Quarries truck and a lady who both stopped to help Katrina after she fell off the horse. “I don’t know who these kind people are, but I would really like to thank them for all their help,” Lynda said.

What’s cooking at Mooloolah? Yolanda Keuning has always had a love of cook books, so when the Mooloolah Valley State School P and C Association decided to create a multicultural cookbook as a fundraising activity for the school she was happy to jump on board as book co-ordinator. “We’re doing a multicultural fete next year and it follows on from our Under 8’s day recently which had a multicultural theme as well,” Yolanda said. “We have some recipes in the book that were cooked that day. One mum, Tutu, did her famous Thai spring rolls during a cooking session with the under 8’s. It makes the children aware of different diets.” The students have also been getting involved by bringing recipes in, drawing pictures for the book and writing letters to celebrities, such as Jessica Watson, to ask them to contribute recipes. So far over 100 recipes have been compiled which includes cuisine from countries such as Mexico, Germany, USA, China, Italy, India, Holland and of course, Australia. It is hoped there will be 300 plus recipes by the time the book is finished and published in November. Local businesses and individuals who are interested in sponsoring the multicultural cook book can place an advertisement in the book.

Dok-my, Taylor, Tasman, Ashley, Nate “The response so far has been excellent. IGA Mooloolah and Bassett Barks are two of our major sponsors as well as lots of local businesses,” Yolanda said. Time for placing advertisement sponsorship is running out and must be in by July 31. For full details an advertisement package can be sent to you by contacting Yolanda on 5492 9886 or 0431 039 301. All funds raised will help pay for furnishing the new school hall, which is currently being built. In the meantime students are looking forward to learning new recipes that they can cook at home. Taylor, from Year 6, said she would definitely cook any dessert recipes. Year 5 student Tasman, agreed, “I’m hoping there will be a chocolate dessert,” he said.

Chiropractors attend to the care of children for a variety of conditions. When spinal bones are misaligned (subluxations), the communication system (nervous system) between your brain and your body may be interrupted, resulting in less than optimal body function. Colic, commonly defined as ‘unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, more than three hours a day’, is said to affect some 16 to 26 per cent of children. Colic is stressful to both parents and healthcare providers alike. Afflicted families’ daily functions become more difficult, and parent-child interactions have been found to be less than optimal when a child has colic. Further, colicky infants may be at greater risk of child abuse and Shaken Baby Syndrome. Given the lack of effectiveness of pharmaceutical interventions in the treatment of infantile colic and concerns about adverse effects, parents are turning to chiropractic for an alternative approach to care. A number of case reports have been published describing the successful chiropractic care of infants with colic as well as a large number of children undergoing chiropractic care. One study of 132 infants with colic, found that 91 per cent of the parents reported an improvement following an average of two to three patient visits and one week after initiating care. Another study described 316 infants suffering from colic receiving chiropractic care. Based on an analysis of diaries kept by their mothers and parent interviews, 94 per cent of the patients benefited from chiropractic care. In addition to the chiropractic spinal adjustments, a chiropractor can utilise other conservative care approaches for the colicky baby. Dietary interventions, herbal remedies, and behavioral interventions for the child have been shown to be effective. By allowing the body to function properly in colicky infants, chiropractic care has undeniable benefits.

Una splendida giornata at Glenview (a wonderful day)

School Chaplains – why we have them Contributed by Honnie Jessup, treasurer of the local Chaplaincy committee

We are so fortunate in this day and age to have a great host of Chaplains in many schools. Chaplains are vital to our communities, for both ourselves and our children. There are very few people we can trust in these times that truly listen to what we say and care about our concerns. Sometimes we just need to talk with someone about what is happening in our lives and to share with someone who is not going to judge us. Often we just need encouragement or some advice or wisdom from a different and objective opinion. The Chaplains I know all have such pure motives and integrity. They truly want to help the children get through their challenging times and encourage parents with tips, ideas and sincere advice. Our Government had the foresight to fund a program for chaplaincy in our community. We hope this funding will continue well past 2011. Certainly, the many chaplaincy committees across the state have made a huge effort to acknowledge and raise funds for this program to continue, and I sincerely hope with all my heart that it does. And as much as we try to help our Chappy, one of his most endearing qualities is that he always wants to give back.

School Chaplain Andy Stott with Glenview students At Glenview and Eudlo Schools, our school Chappy, Andy Stott, blesses others when it is Chaplaincy Week held from May 16 - May 23. Last year he provided the teachers with a morning tea of brewed coffee and homemade cakes and slices and we loved it. This year it was the children’s turn to be blessed. Andy, along with his wife Wendy and two of their five children, plus the Religious Education Teachers of the schools, put on a breakfast for the students. This was a lavish feast of sausages on bread, fresh fruit with yoghurt and marshmallows and a range of cereals. This was a perfect example of what a chaplain embodies: One who serves others before themselves, who gives from an abundant heart. They are bright lights in our schools that offer our children hope, wisdom and joy. Keep shining Andy and from the staff, parents and children of our community, we give you thanks.

“What a wonderful way to start the semester immersed in celebration with the students and the community,” said Mr Neil Harvey, Glenview State School’s new acting principal. In the recent Education Queensland Curriculum Audit, Glenview received high marks for their cultural inclusion, and no wonder with days like this dedicated to teaching the children in a fun ‘hands on’ way. The day’s activities included a taste test of a range of Italian foods, drink and gelato; cheese shot put and olive races; making mosaic pictures from beans and seeds; Michael Angelo ceiling painting; Gondola races, and we finished the day off with the Aida Performance Group from Italy performing ‘Harlequin’s Secret’ in English. E questa splendid giornata si conclude con un sorriso (Splendid day, we finish with a smile).

Bhutan Trip Bhutan is a tiny kingdom wedged between Nepal, India and Chinese Tibet in the Himalayas. Most of the country is above 10,000 feet (over 3,000 metres) altitude. For a person coming from zero at sea level on the Sunshine Coast to living at altitudes even above 11,000 feet takes more time to acclimate than I had there! We were told years ago when Britain was partitioning India, the King of Bhutan said he would roll rocks downhill and wherever the rocks stopped, that would mark the Bhutanese boundary. Still, despite not feeling the best, the country is

stunningly beautiful and the forests unspoiled. That’s in sharp contrast to much of neighbouring Nepal where many of the Himalayan foothills have been denuded and that leads to flooding downstream in the wet seasons. Flying into Paro in Bhutan (in the ‘lowlands’ at 8,000 feet) was exciting, with sharp hills either side of the airstrip. The weather was cloudy so we couldn’t see Mount Everest from the air at the time (but did on another occasion). Most of the Bhutanese homes and buildings (and certainly the lodges and cabins where we stayed) were ornately and colourfully decorated and often

had tasteful wooden carvings. Strangely enough most of the houses had shingle roofs with lots of rocks holding them down. The absence of traffic and quiet of the countryside was palpable almost everywhere – and that peaceful setting was enhanced by the colour of the flowers beside the rice fields. There are a number of monasteries in Bhutan and some of them are perched on the most precarious cliff sides. The Takhsang ‘Tiger’s nest’ monastery is a spectacular sight but it’s only accessed by rope ladder. The day my husband hiked the 10 km there, he wasn’t allowed in – no foreigners that day. Bhutan used to be a fairly closed society but nowadays it is allowing in a limited tourist flow. We were fortunate to be allowed in; we enjoyed good weather and such friendly people as well.

Send us your tales from a recent trip and go in the draw to win a 2 night cruise aboard the Dawn Princess next year. A very special thanks to Mell Silburn from Beerwah Travel for sponsoring this fantastic prize, valued at approx $1,900.00.

Doing business

Planning to expand? Check out Red Building If you are on to a good thing, then stick to it. That’s the philosophy of Dean and Jessica Parry at Red Building. They have been operating on the Sunshine Coast for over 16 years, and have just announced plans to franchise their successful home renovation and building business. “Our goal is to offer other local builders and carpenters the opportunity to start up their own business, with ongoing training and support, business systems and procedures,” Dean said. Red Building’s success can’t be disputed.

Over 87 per cent of their business comes from referrals from other satisfied customers, and last year, the business was nominated in the Small Business of the Year Awards. So it’s not surprising that Dean and Jessica are pretty confident they are doing something right. Whether it’s new homes, renovations, extensions, bathrooms, pergolas, timber decks, insurance work or small jobs, you can count on Red Building, your trusted, local builders, to do a quality job with a minimum of fuss. “We use the same trusted team of contractors and tradesmen, ensuring a smooth and efficient building process,” Dean said. “We take the time to listen to our client’s needs to achieve their desired building outcome, and that certainly makes a difference.” So if you are looking for a local, trusted builder who offers quality workmanship, open communication and project management of all trades, give Dean and Jessica a call at Red Building on 13009RED40, or 0417 045 062, or email enquiries@redbuilding.net.au from 7.00am - 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Alternatively, check them out at www.redbuilding.net.au

The sweet taste of award success

For many businesses, the start of a new financial year can be the motivation to review the business plan and look at new ways to increase profile and profits. Winning a Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Award may assist on both counts. One person who has enjoyed the benefits of winning a Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Award is Louisa Raven, owner of boutique chocolate manufacturer, Cocoa Chocolat at Eumundi. Louisa said that since winning the Retail Small Business Award category in 2009 it had definitely made “a huge difference” to her company’s profile and bottom line. Louisa encouraged all Sunshine Coast businesses to consider entering the 2010 Awards and was considering entering again this year. With entries closing on Friday, July 30, time is running out. Sunshine Coast businesses are encouraged to enter the awards (at no cost) by completing a nomination form, or being nominated by a third party. Nominations close at 5.00pm Friday, July 30 and nomination forms and information is available at www.maroochy.org or by phoning 5443 5661. Categories include: Building/Manufacturing, Business Services, Creative/ Knowledge Industries, Environmental Industries, Export, Food and Beverage Production, Innovation, Lifestyle Services, Professional Services, Retail, Tourism, Outstanding Business Person of the Year and Outstanding Employee of the Year. All entries require a nomination and the completion of nine business submission questions (plus an additional three questions for the Innovation and Export categories). The judges will evaluate entrants by way of the written entry submission, demonstration of best management practices, an onsite interview, a ‘mystery shop/visit’, and referee attestations. The final Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business Awards ceremony will be held in November. It is the largest regional business award event to be held outside a metropolitan city in Australia.

Our last meeting produced some tremendous talent. New member Jenny Warshavsky has a unique way of bringing up to date all family and friends at Christmas. Instead of cards she writes in verse all the events of the previous year concerning her family, and sends them out instead of cards. We were treated to a reading of her Christmas 2006. Betty Graham – Higgs produced a delightful piece entitled ‘Errol Flyn’s autograph’. Betty’s mother who was an avid autograph hunter, has managed to get the autographs of Marion Anderson, Paul Robeson, Stan Laurel, and ‘Scott of the Antarctic’ but Errol Flyn who was in Port in the West Indies

John Wright’s humorous contribution ‘Aberdeen’ showed us, if you are lucky you can chance upon a generous Scotsman. Kate Wright presented for evaluation the work of a young friend. It tells of a barmaid who dreams of marrying a man of wealth and renown but falls in love and marries the local butcher. Caloundra Family History Research Contributed by Roz Kuss, Publicity Officer

The Caloundra Family History Research group welcomed well known speaker Erica Costigan and her husband Bryan at the June general meeting when they presented their most moving ‘Story of the Hospital Ship Centaur’ to members and guests. Those in attendance took a great interest in the amazing information presented by Erica and Bryan, together with the many photographs and items relating to the tragedy, which took place not far from Caloundra. The ship’s bell is clearly showing its name; the beds for patients are stacked on the deck; the Red Cross sign can still be seen; and because ‘Centaur’ lies 2km beneath the waves, the water has no movement. Unbelievably, after all these years, a slouch hat sits on the deck, covered with just a fine film of sediment. Fittingly, the entire area is now a protected zone in memory of those gone forever from family and friends. As always, the rooms at the Guide Hut in Arthur

Street are available for research every Saturday from 9.30am - 12.30pm, as well as every Thursday from 9.30am - 4.00 pm (except the third Thursday of each month when the general meeting is held, commencing at 1.30pm). Information on details concerning research, meetings, special interest groups and seminars/ field trips, can be obtained from Jocelyn on 5494 9807 or June on 5493 2679. Besides general family history research, those seeking ancestors in specific areas are encouraged to attend two hour specialised monthly research sessions conducted at the rooms. So much more knowledge can be gained this way. Meeting times are as followsScotland session on the first Saturday of the month at 10.00am; German session on the first Thursday of the month at 1.00pm; Ireland session on the third Thursday of the month at 11.00am and England and Wales on the fourth Thursday at 1.00pm.

Slipper announces over $50,000 for volunteers Liberal National Federal Member for Fisher Peter Slipper’s pleased to announce more than $50,000 is on its way to help local volunteers carry out their important work. The funding has been allocated under Australia’s Volunteer Grants 2010 initiative. The program helps community groups support their volunteers by paying for training courses, some equipment and fuel reimbursement. “Volunteers are the unsung heroes of our community so I’m delighted that it’s their turn to get a helping hand,” Mr Slipper says. “The money will make their job a little easier.”

The total funds of $53,754.95 include the following to local organisations. The Sunshine Coast and South Burnett District Golf Association, Beerwah: $4,990; Australian Pensioners and Superannuants League, Caloundra Affiliate: $2,045.95; Caloundra State Emergency Service: $1,305; Landsorough Area Community Association: $4,200; Barung Landcare, Maleny: $4,600; University of the Third Age Sunshine Coast, Sippy Downs: $2,500. More information on Volunteer Grants 2010 can be found at fahcsia.gov.au

On August 23, some of our members will be making the annual trip to Gaythorne, home of the Queensland Family History Society, to take the opportunity to garner further details from their wealth of resources. Our bus trip is reasonably priced, so if you are interested in joining us for a full day of research at the QFHS headquarters, contact Valerie at thornskv@bigpond.net.au Group members have priority, but if there are vacancies, visitors are welcome.

Shopping locally?

I am becoming more and more discouraged by the attitude of some of the local shopkeepers. My latest experience was with Subway. A particular foot long subway advertised on TV at $7.00 ($6.30 after 10 per cent discount for seniors), has now increased to $7.50 with no discount for seniors. The response, when this increase was questioned was “well you might get it cheaper in Caloundra.” We go to Caloundra and Maroochydore regularly and often buy our Subway lunch there, always at $6.30. Shop locally? No way! J. Valenta Landsborough

Vandalism in our International Year of Biodiversity

The United Nations has declared 2010 to be an international year of biodiversity. At no time in our history has there been awareness of environmental issues as there is today. Damage to the environment and loss of species is of serious concern to most people whether they be school children or the older generation. Somewhere in between there is a small minority of vandals (I would like to use a stronger word), who have no respect for anything or anyone. Most of them ride trail bikes usually unregistered, and have great satisfaction in causing serious erosion and environmental damage to natural areas, including National Parks, where very obvious signage excludes their obnoxious vehicles. Gates are of no concern! Just build a new track around

them and damage a few more plants! As the tracks get wider the four wheels drive vehicles join them. One of the National Parks I refer to is Mt Coonowrin which has been closed to the public permanently because of serious rock falls. Recently I observed young children walking in the same area unaware that the park was closed to the public. They told me they walked around the ‘bike track’, an assumption that the track had been formed for their use as well! The Coonowrin Creek historic camping ground has also been targeted by vandals. Due to previous damage this area has been closed by a padlocked gate. The padlock was damaged and persons unknown entered and hacked down green trees to create a fire. Ropes were tied to trees in an attempt to remove others for burning. Erosion of the creek back indicated that a trail bike was again involved. Somewhere our environmental education through schools, media and conservation groups has failed. Parents must also take responsibility and ensure trail bikes are ridden in appropriate areas. Of course there are also many adults who do not give a damn about the environment. Probably the cigarette smoking, beer swilling ones who drop their rubbish along the roads every night. Budget boost to Glasshouse region

In response to Cr Grosskerutz’s column in GCNews July 7. The Councillor is pleased to announce that $100,000 is to be allocated to the continuation of the Beerwah Sports Oval masterplan. I notice that there was no mention of the $1 million funding lost to the Beerwah Sportgrounds. Before the last election the Councillor advised those in attendance at meet the candidates evening at the Glasshouse Community Hall, including our current Mayor that these funds would be allocated to the sportground. What will this budget’s $100,000 actually do, will it fix the entrance to the sports ground? Bells Creek Road: road pavement rehabilitation allocation of $201,000. I can imagine why the pavement rehabilitation is required, when they put the bitumen down originally, they then went along and filled in the pot holes. We were under Caloundra Shire in those days. You might remember that the road was ready for

bitumen or surfacing then it rained and rained some more, then it poured and rained some more again. Finally it stopped and cleared, the weather fined up and guess what happened then? Yep, you guessed it; they laid the bitumen sealer and then filled the pot holes. Councils know what traffic uses these roads, such as Bells Creek Road and Pikes Road, but insist on surfacing with inadequate material, hence they waste more hard earned dollars later in patching, and as we all know, that then is ongoing. Do the job correctly in the first place, and you do not have this trouble. There’s an old adage, ‘You have to spend money to make money’ it also saves wasting money if you spend it wisely in the first instance. Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountain

A positive story about our younger generation

Congratulations to our younger residents in relation to an incident at Beerwah Railway Station on Saturday, June 26. One reads almost weekly of brainless goings on. How about a story of another group of the younger generation who declined to give their names or accept any reward for a good deed? At 4.00am the cruise ship ‘Jewel’ pulls into the wharf at Sydney, with the 2,000 odd passengers disembarking in groups according to distance of flight. Being from the Sunshine Coast, we were first to disembark and bussed to the airport for our flight to Brisbane and onward train journey to Beerwah. After an early breakfast we left the ship about 6.00am and boarded the aircraft about 12.00noon. Waiting around we next boarded the airport train to Caboolture where we had a wait for the 5.15pm to Beerwah. Boarding the 5.15pm train to Beerwah we decided that I would go home for the car while the wife sat at the train station with the luggage. I picked up the car and arrived at the railway station and found the car had a flat tyre. I lifted the boot to extract tools and spare wheel. Two young men came over and took over changing the tyre, replaced them in the boot, declined to give their names or to accept payment, simply saying we always look after ‘Our oldies’. Their parents should be proud of them. A big thank you. Stan and Unice Buckmaster Beerwah

Men’s health

It’s important that all men are aware of the unique health risks that can actually lead to them dying earlier than their female counterparts. It’s worthy to note that life expectancy for Australian males is 79 years, compared to 83 for women. Figures show that the leading causes of death in men are heart disease, some forms of cancer, and stroke. On top of that, research shows that men, especially those who are younger, are more likely to drink alcohol at dangerous levels, use illicit drugs, and to drive dangerously. I urge all men to consider their health and make it a top priority to visit their doctor for regular check-ups.

Happy birthday to His Holiness

I extend my warmest wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama to mark his 75th birthday this month. The milestone is yet another inspiring achievement by this humble man, who works tirelessly to spread his message of peace throughout the world. I am honoured to call Him a friend.

Pension changes for Veterans

The Liberal National team has advised veterans that it will, if elected, introduce new indexation arrangements for Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits Scheme (DFRDB) members, which will benefit Australia’s veterans and ex-service personnel in Fisher. These changes recognised the unique nature of military service. It would impact some 4,204 veterans in Fisher and 4,094 in Fairfax. Under a Liberal National government, from July 1, 2011 those DFRDB members aged 55 years or older will have their military superannuation pensions indexed to the greater of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Male Total Average Weekly Earnings (MTAWE) or the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI).

Thank God for gateway care, say 4500 families

It’s a sad fact that more and more families on the Sunshine Coast are doing it tough in today’s economic climate. Many have been living on the tightest of budgets for years but more and more are already past that and the numbers are increasing weekly. Thank God for Gateway Care. Thank God for Acts Church Caloundra who nurture the charitable organisation and thank God for the volunteers who run it. For the many low-income and disadvantaged families in the region they simply thank God they are getting some help. Gateway is the biggest charitable food distribution outlet on the Coast, selling food items as low-cost as possible and even offering hot breakfasts once a week and a cup of coffee and a cake at any time. There’s always someone to have a yarn with too and that can be very important for people who often face social isolation because of the restrictions placed on their lifestyle through lack of money. This great organisation has welcomed support from other welfare agencies on the Coast as well as businesses. Four Woolworth stores on the Coast provide a daily supply of bread and perishables while other businesses also chip in with donations. The bottom line is that Gateway Care provides groceries and other food items as cheaply as possible to health care or Centrelink card recipients and they do it in a relaxed and social atmosphere. The feedback has naturally been most fulfilling for the volunteers. Users of the service have expressed gratitude both for the low-cost items and the genuine care and affection they receive. It’s sad that organisations like Gateway Care have to work in our community at all. In a perfect world we wouldn’t need them or the Salvation Army, Lifeline, St Vincent de Paul and others. But the fact is that it is not a perfect world and some 4,500 families or 15,000 people are currently using Gateway Care. Thank God they’re here. Gateway Care operates out of its premises on Helen Street, Caloundra from Monday to Saturday between 9.00am – 12.00noon. There is also a free breakfast of sausage, bacon and eggs every Wednesday morning but people must register the day before. Gateway Care can be contacted on 5437 2015 or through my office on 5491 7740.

Peachester pathway

Pet Partnership

Council has started footpath works on Commissioners Flat Road in Peachester. A concrete pathway 1.5 metres wide is being constructed between Peachester Road and Durunder Lane, and a two metre wide gravel pathway between Durundur Lane and Vieritz Road. Completion is expected within three weeks, weather permitting. Council officers will contact residents to discuss timing for access or parking if works are likely to block entrances. Your patience is appreciated whilst construction works are underway. Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists. During construction, council will take steps to avoid disturbing large and established trees. However, should any require removal; council will consult with adjoining property owners.

Uniting Park artwork

Earlier this year we became aware that the beautiful mosaic artwork in the pathway at Uniting Park, in Glass House township, became very slippery when wet. Multiple surface treatments where tried, without success. In an effort to preserve the artwork, the pathway was cut and artwork removed to more suitable locations around the park. The pathway has been replaced with a plain broom finished concrete, and the artwork has been successfully removed with no damage.

Service Road off Landsborough-Maleny Road

Works are about to commence on the unnamed road below the Caravan Park on the Landsborough Maleny Road. This work will involve the construction of table drains, pipe crossings to driveways and the sealing of the road. This will be very welcome news to the residents of this road, who have been requesting this upgrade for quite some time.

Beerwah Energex Network Upgrade

Energex will be commencing works in the coming weeks as part of their improvement and maintenance program. Locations affected are Peachester Road, Roberts Road and Simpson Street, Beerwah. The works will depend upon the specific site, however the majority will include road trenching, installation of underground power cables and replacement of existing poles. Generally these works will be carried out from 7.00am - 6.00pm weekdays. For more information call 1300 762 213 or visit energex.com.au/myarea

ASÊ FEATUREDÊ ON

Every three months, the Pet Partnership Group – consisting of 4Paws, SCARS, RSPCA, Wilvos, Australian Veterinarians Association (of which I’m on the taskforce), and council – have been meeting to develop a pet management program. Our aim is to have zero euthanasia among cats and dogs by promoting microchipping and de-sexing of pets within the community. We will continue to keep this messaging high level in order to win the war against unwanted animals.

Australia Day Awards

Nominations for Council’s Australia Day Awards are now open. Take advantage of this opportunity to reward locals who are outstanding achievers in the community. Nomination categories include Sport and Recreation, Environment, Senior and Young Citizen of the Year, Community, Business and Creative. See council’s website for online nomination forms.

Retirement village kerbside collection

It has been brought to my attention that kerbside collection services have not been offered at retirement villages across the region. I will continue to lobby Council for this service in discussions for the 2011/12 budget.

Road-side stalls

As part of the Budget 2010/11 meeting, council resolved a fee for roadside stalls. This is not for farm gate sales i.e. farmers selling their produce on the side of the road at their farms. While farmers will be required to lodge a form, they will not be required to pay any fees. However, those itinerants selling produce other than farm-fresh goods - for example fish or coffee - will require a permit and fees will be applicable.

Photographic competition

As part of the Festival of the Walks, from August 20 - 29, Montville Coffee is sponsoring a Photographic Competition. I encourage all budding photographers to take part – it is open to all ages. There are great prizes to be won – adult’s first prize is $1,000, children’s first prize is a family pass to Australia Zoo. The top nine entries will be printed, framed and displayed at Flame Hill Winery. Entries close August 6. Fill out an entry form online at www.festivalofthewalks.com.au

A major survey has challenged some myths about how slim people stay that way - are they blessed with the right genes or is it just plain hard work? The answer is very few of us can keep down our weight without exercising and eating healthy foods. And beware the ‘low-carb’ diet – the study found people who restricted carbohydrates were more likely to have a higher body mass index (BMI). Consumer Reports, the magazine of the American organisation Consumers Union, asked more than 21,000 subscribers about their lifetime weight history and eating, dieting and exercise habits, with the responses suggesting that people who have never been overweight are unlikely to be found sitting in front of the TV eating a bowl of chips or pasta. Only three per cent of ‘always slim’ respondents said they never exercised and ate whatever they pleased. The survey found ‘always-slim’ people have very similar habits to people who have successfully lost weight and kept it off and uncovered six common stay-slim strategies, including watching portion sizes; limiting fat to less that one-third of daily kilojoule intake, eating lots of fruit and vegetables and choosing wholegrains over refined cereal products. Staying slim

Photographer's corner with Marg and John

Bernie’s Top Views Bernie and Fayonne Partridge enjoy nothing more than packing up the caravan and heading off for a few weeks or even months at a time to visit new sights or even to return again to places which have drawn them back. The thing about Bernie, though, is his penchant for walking to the uppermost point of the surrounding countryside. The rewards are great. Not only does he see much more than is possible from lower down, he returns with photographs that are somewhat out of the ordinary. Landscapes and seascapes offer a wide range of opportunities for good composition. Being there at the right time is the most important thing in photography! It is worthwhile staying for a few days in order to return to top photo spots to take advantage of different lighting conditions which make great pictures. Plan to take some photos in the early morning or late afternoon when slanted light with longer shadows will create a romantic mood. Careful placement of an object in the foreground such as a rock or tree branch gives a sense of distance. Taking the time to walk around and look at the possibilities for other shots always pays off. Bernie’s diagonal placement of the balloons makes a strong composition. The tree branch on the right gives a feeling of depth and perspective. Check out Ansel Adams at www.anseladams.com

Two years and going strong That’s the message from Martin and Lorraine at Beerwah Mechanical Services since taking over in the spring of 2008. “We are having a great time meeting and serving the many new and existing customers that we have met over the last two years,” Lorraine said. “And living locally is great for building those special relationships that we have with our customers.” Lorraine said Chris, the workshop supervisor, is also looking to lay down roots here in Beerwah, having worked as a mechanic for more than 24 years. Chris has worked with just about everyone, from Aston Martin, Ferrari and Porsche, to BMW and Volvo. Joel joined the team at the beginning of the year, bringing with him six years of experience since completing his apprenticeship, and has proven a great asset. Combined with Martin’s 25 years experience, that makes more than 50 years between the three of them! But according to Lorraine, experience is only half the skills necessary to operate a successful business. “Customer service is our priority,” said Lorraine. So for all your mechanical needs with a highly experienced team of qualified mechanics and all the latest equipment, give Beerwah Mechanical Services a call, where they specialise in customers, not just cars! You will find them on Free Street, Beerwah, or give them a call on 5494 0000.

Rates notices on the way Rates notices will arrive in letterboxes for 153,000 Sunshine Coast properties this week as council mails out its first rate run of the 2010/11 financial year with a value of $136 million including the state government fire levy. Finance and Business Executive Director Greg Laverty said all rate payers should try to take advantage of the offered five per cent discount off general rates. “If rates are paid by August 20, for eligible pensioners there is no maximum limit on this discount but it is capped to a maximum of $100.00 for non-pensioners,” Greg Laverty said. Council continues to make it as convenient as possible to pay rates. Rates can be paid online at anytime of the day or with Post Billpay, or via BPay with participating financial institutions. Those who do not have access to the Internet still have the convenience of paying by credit card over the phone via 131 816 from anywhere in Australia and following the prompts. Customers can also pay in person at any branch of Australia Post, by cash, cheque or from a nominated savings account. Alternatively, payment can be made at a Customer Service Centre from 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday (addresses identified at the bottom of your Rate Notice), or post a cheque or money order to their local Sunshine Coast Council office (addresses identified at the bottom of your Rate Notice). To assist with payments, please have your customer reference number from your rate’s notice handy. Ratepayers who cannot make payment by the due date can enter into an arrangement to pay by instalments. As long as you meet the conditions of the arrangement, council will not charge any interest on this current half-year’s rates. You will find more information about general rates and separate charges on council’s website. For rates enquiries, you can email council via rates@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or phone 5475 7542 between 8.15am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Research begins on first Community Plan

The Coast’s first ever Community Plan has taken a major step forward as council begins to survey residents on what they think are the biggest issues facing the region. Corporate Planning and Performance Portfolio Councillor Tim Dwyer said that the Community Plan will identify the long term vision, aspirations and priorities for this community into 2030. “Over the past few years, council has gathered extensive feedback about what residents want, think and feel on certain issues,” Cr Dwyer said. “The purpose of this survey is to ensure the accuracy of our information, fill a few gaps in our knowledge, and importantly do it before we develop the Community Plan. “The results of the research will be discussed at a community conference in October. “Council is required to develop a community plan under the new Local Government Act but ultimately the Community Plan is the people’s plan and a roadmap to our future. FINANCE OPTIONS FOR RENOVATORS With the costs of selling your home and buying a new one often in excess of $50,000, it’s hardly surprising that some people choose not to move house at all. They make the most of their house – or the land – they already have. Renovating or rebuilding allows people to maintain their lifestyle, neighbours, infrastructure and all the other things that they like and are familiar with – and still live in their ideal home.

However, although you avoid some of the upheaval, issues and expenses involved in buying a new property, like stamp duty and conveyancing, there are still a lot of things to be taken into consideration. As Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser, Teresa Harrison explains, in terms of finance there is a big difference between cosmetic home improvements and structural renovations. ‘A loan for cosmetic improvements is usually

Home ownership still within grasp Home owners and buyers are once again feeling the pinch to keep their dreams of home ownership alive as housing affordability returns to the property market agenda. But, First National Beerwah Principal, Denise Pinwill says it’s a matter of rethinking options and developing creative strategies. Impending future rate rises, along with tightening lending conditions and increasing mortgage stress concerns have started to take their toll on home buyers’ ability to own their own home. According to Denise, home buyers need to take action on an individual level to tear down the wall of housing affordability in any way they can. Recent research has found a decline in the number of home loans with a high loan-to-value ratio (LVR) of 95 per cent or above. LVR refers to the amount of money borrowed for a property, compared to what the property is worth. Denise says while lending criteria has toughened in recent months, there are still lenders willing to negotiate a better deal around a number of factors such as fees or rates or the actual LVR itself. “Lending institutions need to be willing to negotiate and be a little more flexible,” she said. “And there are plenty of lenders out there who are willing to do just that, if home buyers are willing to shop around a little and do a bit of homework themselves. It’s up to the individual to take matters into their own hands and ask. “But they need to have the facts that support their case as well.” Some key tips for overcoming housing affordability concerns include: • Time your purchase for when there is a lull in the market, such as winter, when the market generally slows and lower demand can potentially tip the balance in favour of buyers.

• Housing Loans • Investment Property Loans • Commerical Loans • Reverse Mortgages • Leasing & CHP Loans • Personal Loans

that has the beautiful Mooloolah River as a neighbour. With direct access to the local riding trails from the pony paddock your horse and rider will be kept healthy and happy. The large conservatory is a great place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you if the weather is not being kind. If it gets to hot to handle you can take a dip in the pool or turn on the ducted air con to cool the house. The 6m x 6m colourbond shed has power and is the perfect hideout for the tradie or artist. 61 South River Drive. Agent Matthew Guillemet, contact SCR Mooloolah phone 5492 9977 or 0437 230 011. I was asked this question at work the other day, and not for the first time. How would you answer? Surely you have to know what the other person thinks ‘religious’ is. After all there are lots of things people are religious about: cleaning the car, watching the footy, going to church and so on. Did he mean to be devoted to doing something regularly? I had to make sure we’re talking about the same thing, so I asked him what he thought being religious is otherwise my answer could be completely wrong. He said “Oh you know, do you believe in God and all that stuff.” Now we’re getting somewhere. If you’re asking do I believe in God, then yes I do, if that’s being religious then OK yes I am. But it was the “and all that stuff” that I was really interested to find out about, so I asked him what the “stuff” was. He was a little unsure but said: going to church, praying and things like that. Well yes, I do those things too, I think they’re important and again if that’s all religious is then I’m in! But I asked him was he really asking me “are you a Christian?” He said yeah I suppose so. Once again I had to make sure we we’re talking about the same thing! What did he think a Christian is and he said basically all those things we had just talked about: going to church, praying etc. And here is the big problem; here is why I do not give an immediate ‘yes’ to the question ‘are you religious’ because the things just mentioned ‘doing stuff’, that my mate thought makes someone a Christian, do not.

Mooloolah Valley Church So I had to tell him that I am in fact NOT religious in light of what he thinks a Christian is. He was a little confused, so I explained a Christian is someone who believes in God and that Jesus is the Son of God, has realised they are a sinner and has asked Jesus to forgive them and will follow Him in their daily lives and He will be Lord of their lives. There are many people who say they believe in God but are not Christians, in fact in the bible it says that the devils believe in God and tremble! Belief that there is a God is not enough; we have to respond to what He says in the Bible and truly believe in our hearts that through faith in Jesus we can have a personal relationship with Him. This is where religion and true Christianity part company. ‘Religion’ is people trying to impress God by doing ‘all that stuff’ by their own merits. Real Christian faith comes from the heart and recognises that God has already done everything for us when Jesus died to forgive us of our sins and rose again, and that from a thankful heart we will then want to do all those things that please God, going to church to collectively worship Him, pray to Him and share how good He is. So…. are you religious?

Peachester Public Dip Anyone travelling west from Peachester recently may have noticed activity at the old public dip site. After all the years it has been hidden by trees and undergrowth, it is now possible to see the dip from the road. Earlier this year the Department of Environment and Resource Management allocated funds to clear the site and carry out basic repairs to the structure. While the dip has seemed of little importance to the district for many years (Bruce Page reports that it was last used in the early 1960s), it has been identified by the EPA as an important historical site, and was entered on the Heritage Register on April 3, 2009. The following information is from the Queensland Heritage Register website. History: Peachester Public Dip is a concrete formed cattle dip framed with slab posts and a sawn timber roof clad in corrugated iron sheeting. It dates from 1915 when it replaced an earlier timber dip built by Landsborough Shire Council on the site, which had been reserved as a Stock Dip Reserve in November 1910. These dips were erected in response to the spread of cattle tick into Queensland which threatened the cattle industry throughout the State and dairying in south-east Queensland. … A caretaker was appointed to oversee the dip. He was responsible for ‘charging’ the dip with the mixture of arsenic and soda that was used. Water was carted from the nearby Stanley River to keep it filled. One day per week, usually Saturday, was set aside for dipping and a fee of two pence per head was charged. As more farmers built their own dips the Peachester Public Dip fell into disuse. Cultural Significance: Peachester Public Dip is important as rare surviving evidence of the practice of plunge dipping cattle at locallydeveloped, small public dips that was common in the first few decades of the 20th century. This practice has been largely superseded by large public dips at the borders of tick-free areas and technological innovations in the treatment of cattle tick infestation. http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/chims/basicSearch. html

In previous contributions I have talked about the Aechmea bromeliads, and how these plants grow very well in the sub-tropical environment of the Glasshouse Country region. There are around 210 named Aechmea species, with over 400 cultivars developed by crossbreeding. When you look around the local gardens you will see clumps of Aechmea, a large number are in flower over winter and will hold the bloom into spring. A common cultivar is ‘Lucky Stripes’ with its mainly green leaf, cream margins and cream stripes. It grows as an erect rosette approximately 30cm tall and wide.

Aechmea gamosepala Another lovely specimen is Aechmea gamosepala. This species loves full shade and will give your garden a range of colours depending on how much you feed the plants. If the plants have been provided with plenty of nutrients your plant will develop dark, glossy, arching green leaves which can reach 70cm in height. In bright light or low-nutrient situations the leaves turn a light green to almost gold colour and will usually grow more erect to about 40 50cm high.

Correction

In last week’s edition of GCNews, an incorrect image was supplied to illustrate the paralysis tick. Top right is an image of an engorged adult paralysis tick, the size of which is generally greater than three millimetres. The main difference between a cattle tick (bottom right) and a paralysis tick is that the legs of the paralysis

Lucky Stripes Both of these species have similar flowers which stand erect with blue and pink flower spikes. When finished flowering, the spike retains the pink colour until spring and into summer. Aechmea blanchetiana is a large and imposing bromeliad from the sandy soils of costal Brazil, and is frequently used in landscaping. It can reach a span of over 1m, and has glossy green leaves that turn bronze in high light. The branched, feathery yellow and red flower spike reaches up to 2m high. This plant is an excellent feature plant in sunny, rocky landscapes or near the beach in exposed locations. The plant will cope with some shade, but leaf colour will be inclined to stay green in this location.

They can both look similar in colour, however a paralysis tick typically has a grey body and brown legs. Information and images supplied courtesy of Graeme Lean and Associates, phone 5494 1337.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Callistemon ‘Pink Alma’ Callistemon viminalis cultivar

April 2010

July 2010 Colour photos taken by Helen Page

This is one of our favourite Callistemon cultivars. It is a dense bushy shrub that grows approximately 2.5m x 2m and provides great habitat for small birds. But it is the profusion of bright pink nectar laden flowers that draws the attention of

humans and nectar loving birds. Our specimen in the nursery grounds is in flower almost all year long. It is very hardy and can handle a damp spot in the yard. This really is an excellent screening shrub that is loved by many species of birds.

We recommend pruning after flowering to promote a bushy shrub with lots of flowers.

When we received this poem penned by a Mooloolah resident, we knew we just had to share it with our readers, many of whom may share similar sentiments!

‘Thank God the World Cup’s Over!’ With hot chips in your left hand And a tinny in your right, World Cup on the telly, You’re a happy vegemite! To see if you’re still with us, We’d prod and poke and shout, But when the Ozzie’s scored a goal, Then we were in no doubt. You didn’t look up when… Your home brew grew and grew. A dozen bottles make a bang! You farewelled the cops with two! Our daughter Jill has had her babe, You’ve passed on your old football With fondest dreams of future wins, You’d like to call him Paul. Our letterbox has disappeared In weeds – a shocking sight. The bills unpaid, and unread papers Now reach dizzy heights! Tears of happiness and angst Dribble down your pasty cheeks, To join the crumbs of cold meat pies That’ve hung about for weeks. Your limbs have atrophied by now, Your nails are inches long, You hear the world through mournful horns, The kids avoid your pong. We’re back from your mate’s funeral now, It was a lovely wake! You hoped he’d see the replay, On Skyview, for Heaven’s sake! The affairs I started weeks ago With neighbours Mick and Blue, Whiled away the time alright, But now they’re watching too! I’ve tried a wild fandango Green and yellow, in the nude, But then you muttered “really, To block the telly is quite rude!” The air is thick with ‘One-eyed refs!’ And racial innuendo. Just kindly give both sides a ball! Why won’t they comprehendo? Our world’s a strange and oily place Where Spying deals are made, Patel’s in jail and all you’ve said’s “Kev’s hair’s a different shade?” As we arrive back home from Bali, We hear a tortured “Ah no…. Now where the bloody hell ya been? You missed the whole damn show!” The internet has vuvuzelas, So…. As a memento of your time, We’ll gift wrap one… and place it…… Up where the sun don’t shine The Mad Hatter from Mooloolah

Music helps us exercise harder, for longer Music significantly improves our ability to perform during exercise, says Olympic sports psychologist Professor Peter Terry, whose research has shown that elite athletes can run an extra 1.5 minutes longer when listening to music. Professor Terry – who presented his results in Melbourne recently at the International Congress of Applied psychology (ICAP), hosted by the Australian Psychological Society and the International Association of Applied Psychology – found a measurable difference in the oxygen requirements of athletes who were running in time to music. “Music has a powerful psychological effect but also influences us physiologically, by regulating heart rate and enhancing oxygen use,” Professor Terry said “It seems that our bodies respond to music by relaxing slightly, which improves efficiency of blood flow during exercise to help us go harder for longer and get the most out of fitness training sessions. Many elite athletes have incorporated music into their training schedule with the help of sports psychologists who can match music to the activity to achieve the desired effect. Professor Terry said by varying tempo and lyrics you can produce different effects on a person’s mood, distract athletes from feelings of fatigue, or prepare them for competition.

“Some athletes also choose to sing to themselves while exercising, which interestingly has a similar effect on concentration and motivation as listening to an actual song.” “The benefits of music translate to people in their everyday exercise and fitness training. Consider how a song makes you feel and choose music that motivates you and heightens your energy levels,” he said. Professor Peter Terry’s expert tips for choosing the right music for exercise: Match the music to the activity you are undertaking and the psychological effect you want to experience, e.g. loud, fast, rhythmical, bass-driven music is great for psyching yourself up before interval training. Consider the intensity of the activity. Generally speaking you will need faster music if you are running at a faster pace. Consider music that creates motivating images in your mind. It may be used to associate with popular culture such as film ‘Rocky’, or to personal memories. Match the tempo of the music to your expected heart rate during your training session. Choose music that contains positive affirmations of running such as ‘keep on running’ or ‘work your body’. Positive statements such as ‘moving on up’ or ‘I believe’ can also have a motivating effect.

Beerwah Bulldogs July 17 Report The Bulldogs hosted the Gympie Devils on Saturday looking to put the disappointing performance the week before against Kawana well and truly behind us. The Under 18’s ground out a 20-14 victory which gives them a 3 point advantage over the Devils in the Fight for fifth spot on the competition ladder but must continue to win the next few games to claim a spot in the semi finals. The Reserve Grade team let Gympie in for three quick tries but clawed their way back to lead at half time. The second half produced a very entertaining contest which went right down to the wire with the Bulldogs scoring a great try just before full time to wrap up the Game 40-38. The Bulldogs head down to Caboolture on Sunday to take on the Snakes and would love to see all the supporters come along again to offer support. A lady about eight months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. The man seemed more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested. The case came up in court. The judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself. The man replied, “well your Honour, it was like this: when the lady got on the bus, I couldn't help but notice her condition. She

Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said, 'William's Big Stick Did the Trick,' and I could hardly contain myself. But, Your Honour, when she moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said,’ Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident!' I just lost it.' 'Case Dismissed!'
