Hi everyone
Local Rotarian, Bob McLean, is definitely an ideas man, and his latest idea is going to see a very big event for our local area - the Glasshouse Country Festival. Bob, who has organised the Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Festival for the past few years, believes it is time to expand this event and make it part of a week- long festival. He is calling on other community groups, schools and sporting events to hold events in this week which will coincide with Queensland Day / Week. As most of us would like to think that we live in one of the best places in Queensland, this makes for a perfect time to celebrate all those unique and wonderful elements of our local communities. The good part about this type of approach is that individual groups
can hold their events and by piggybacking on the promotional activity you can reach a much larger audience and potentially significantly increase the number of people who come along. It would be great for us to host a number of events / activities that could draw people from outside our area to come and enjoy what we have to offer and would also be a good way to boost the local economy and encourage tourism to the area. If you would like to get involved or would like more information then you can contact Bob via info@glasshouse countryfestival. com.au
Regards,

Local community groups and clubs, schools and organisations are being invited to lodge an expression of interest to participate in what is being touted as the biggest community-wide celebration ever hosted in the area. The Glasshouse Country Festival, an initiative of the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains, will become an inaugural celebration to be held next year from Sunday, May 29 to Monday, June 6, which will host a variety of locally-based activities and events. Event coordinator, Rotary’s Bob McLean and the man behind the region’s successful annual Sustainability and Garden Expo said he was calling on the local community to get behind the planning for next year’s inaugural event by planning their own celebration to fall under the umbrella of the festival. “The Glasshouse Country Festival will kick off with the annual Sustainability and Garden Expo on Sunday, May 29 and will conclude on Monday, June 6 with a relaunch of the Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce business and community awards dinner,” Bob said. The festival is being planned as part of state-wide Queensland Day celebrations next year, with Rotary hoping to secure funding from the State Government.

Australia Zoo has been a great supporter of our Rotary Club, and in turn, the Cystic Fibrosis children of the Sunshine Coast, over many years. Our club pays a specialist physiotherapist to treat these sufferers. All money raised stays on the Sunshine Coast. Most importantly, our therapist is able to provide early detection of any deterioration so that attention can be given quickly and locally without resorting to the family having to go to Brisbane, as often as they did previously.

Beerwah pool back in the swim A revamped Beerwah Aquatic Centre has opened its doors this week, after being closed for the last 12 weeks for maintenance works. The pool has had a major makeover, including being cleaned and completely repainted with new lane markings, expansion joints, tile repairs and grouting. Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz is delighted that there are more improvements to come, thanks to $15,000 in this year’s council budget to install a disability hoist at the Aquatic Centre later this year. “This equipment will provide important pool accessibility to the aged and for people with minor to severe physical disabilities,” Cr Anna said. “The Beerwah pool is extremely popular with the community and I appreciate their patience while the centre has been shut to allow for these important upgrades.” The centre features a 25-metre heated pool and is open from 5.30am on weekdays, 8.00am on Saturday and 10.00am on Sunday.

Stimulus supports jobs and delivers affordable housing in Landsborough
Minister for Housing Tanya Plibersek and Federal Labor Candidate for Fisher Chris Cummins last week inspected a housing project that has delivered 12 new affordable homes in Landsborough. The 12 new two bedroom apartments in Landsborough were funded through the Federal Labor Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan, and were built and developed by Sharncrest Pty Ltd. The units, which commenced construction in October 2009, were completed last month. The new homes are highly energy efficient, with apartments achieving an energy efficiency rating between six and eight and a half. Four of the new apartments will also be fully adaptable and suitable for people in wheelchairs. Ms Plibersek said the new homes were among 220 new affordable rental homes for low and modest income earners being funded through the Federal Labor Government’s National Building Economic Stimulus Plan on the Sunshine Coast.

“The new housing also contributes to the Federal Labor Government’s plan to halve homelessness in Australia by 2020,” Ms Plibersek said. Mr Cummins said he was delighted that during the construction period for this project, 21 full-time tradespeople from the local region were employed on the site. “This shows how important the Federal Labor Government’s Stimulus Plan has been in supporting local jobs through the global recession,” Mr Cummins said. The new homes are being managed by Sunshine Coast Regional Housing. Chief Executive Officer Morrie Evans said that the units at Landsborough along with other Nation Building projects being delivered by the Federal and Queensland Governments on the Sunshine Coast, were very welcome. “The new homes will make a significant difference for a community that is challenged with low levels of housing supply and affordability,” Mr Evans said. The Federal Labor Government’s $5.6 billion social housing initiative will deliver more than 19,300 new homes, repair more than 70,000 others and support more than 15,000 jobs across the country.

60 years and still laughing You don’t have to spend very long in the company of Gordon and Heather Wright from Glass House Mountains before you realise one of the reasons for achieving 60 years of marriage is a healthy dose of good humour. Like any good comedic duo there’s always a straight man (Heather, 81) and the joker (Gordon, 82) and they can banter, tease and joke with ease. But beneath it all is an obvious and enduring love. Gordon spoke of the moment he first saw Heather when she was singing with the choir at church. “I walked into church and said, ‘I’m going to marry that girl’.” But it was six months later before he finally asked her out. Gordon and Heather married on August, 19, 1950 at Adelaide. They built their first home at Mt Gambier out of limestone blocks. They have four children, one daughter and three sons, 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. They both had various occupations over the years but when they moved to Queensland in 1953 they ran a farm at Biloela, where they milked cows for five years but mainly grew irrigated Lucerne for 19 years. While personality wise they are different, they have a lot in common as well, including their mutual love of singing. Over the years they were

Gordon and Heather Wright today, and left, on their wedding day in numerous Eisteddfods and they won many awards and prizes. Heather and Gordon also enjoy travelling and have been right around Australia in a caravan, and have always made regular trips back to South Australia. They even bought a new caravan last year and plan to keep travelling. They are happy to share their tips for a happy marriage. “Don’t hold a grudge. We’ve had rough patches, but ours didn’t last that long. Our attitude helps,” Heather said. Gordon agrees. “Have a sense of humour and don’t give up. It’s knowing all their faults and still loving them.” He can’t help himself though, and jokes, “you don’t get that much for murder,” but he is very serious when he adds, “when you get married, you’ve got a mate.” While they haven’t made any 60th anniversary plans themselves they know their family is organising something special to help them celebrate. Without a doubt it will include a lot of laughs.

Turning scraps into sculptures Noel Carroll, 61, from Beerwah, is the sort of down-to-earth Aussie bloke that doesn’t like fuss or attention. He would have preferred his ‘creations’ could talk so they could do media interviews instead of him. But the fact remains that Noel is a talented artist who can turn scrap bits of metal into fabulous works of art. Born on a dry land farm in the Riverina area and a builder by trade, Noel always knew he could copy and draw and was interested in what other artists could create and do. But it wasn’t until four years ago when time and freedom became available that he started making his creations. “When I first came here, I made a lot of machinery for strawberry growing. I had a heap of plate steel, I cut it all up and made some machinery, and then I had all these little bits laying around. I thought, it’s too good to throw away, so I started sticking it all together,” Noel said. Australia is definitely his inspiration. “I like the bush; I work on Australiana with everything I do. My pieces can take anywhere from two or three days to a week plus thinking time. No two pieces are alike. I get lots of burnt
Free Aussie World pass up for grabs every week, no joke!
fingers and sore eyes from the welder flashing but I keep going.” Most of the material he uses is junk metal: scraps of metal, nails, wire, screws, nuts and bolts, rough metal and more. “When I worked in the building trade I’d see waste on job sites and it used to sicken me. I’m always on the lookout for anything I can use and stick together.” Noel said creating his pieces gives him contentment. “If I just sit there and start putting stuff together you get to the stage where you can see something developing - there’s nothing better.” He recently displayed his work for the first time at the Queensland Home and Garden Expo at Nambour and he admits the response has changed him. “I went for the exposure but I was really nervous. It went incredibly well. There was a lot of interest, really good serious comments, at least 80 per cent of people stopped and admired my work. I’m a different person now, I feel uplifted,” he said.
“My wife takes me seriously now and has given me free reign. My daughter is very arty, she’s been a great help with this, developing the website, without her this wouldn’t have happened.” Noel has had a life full of ups and downs including getting Barmah Forest Virus and falling off a roof three years ago which broke 10 ribs and collapsed a lung, but he is thoroughly enjoying his late blooming role as an artist. “It’s satisfying,” he said. For more information visit www.carrollcreations.id.au or phone 0416 079 214.

Our local Rotary Club was thrilled to welcome three new members within the last few weeks. Firstly, Kay and Peter Farrell moved to our area from Sydney a while ago and joined our meetings almost immediately. Both the Farrell’s come with a long association with Rotary Clubs from the Sydney metropolitan area. Peter Farrell has been in Rotary since 1996, was club president in Liverpool West Club in 2003/04, has served on numerous committees at district levels and was recognised as ‘Volunteer of the Year’ in 2009. Peter was honoured with a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) award and received a further higher award with a Sapphire Pin in recognition of his service. Kay Farrell, Peter’s wife, has an involvement in Rotary since 2006 as a member of the Cabramatta Rotary Club and was also made a Paul Harris Fellow. She has been involved with numerous welfare projects within her club and local council area, including Rotary Bowel Scan and Youth programs including RYDA (Driver Awareness), RYLA (Youth Leadership) projects. Since getting involved in the Glasshouse Rotary club, Kay has already been actively involved in proposing different charitable events for the benefit of the homeless in our area. The Farrell’s

will bring a wealth of knowledge to our local club. Last, but definitely not least, our club welcomes Sue Brumpton back into our membership. Sue has been involved with our Rotary club prior to her leaving Australia in 2003 to teach in Timor. She was a Ryda Cheshire Foundation volunteer and taught English to village people and staff. Later, she was actively involved in setting up a training centre in Dili, which now educates 500 students in English, computer science and Portuguese. Sue brings heaps of ideas and knowledge to our club. Welcome back Sue!

as ghost stories, love stories, thrillers and much more. This promises to make our next anthology the best ever. Last meeting we were delighted to hear two love stories, one from Marilyn Martinuzzi and one from Betty Graham – Higgs. Marylin’s took the theme of love lost and found on Vanuatu, and Betty’s story began in the West Indies and finished in India. Bob Banner gave us a piece that could have been the plot of a James Bond Movie titled ‘Rescue at Sea’. Trevor McGurk gave a trilogy of ghost stories, drawn from the dark side of the West Coast of Tasmania, ‘The Ghost of the Capie Mine’, ‘The Ghost of Creamy Corner’, and to finish ‘Aunt Jemmima and the Tin Trunk’. Three more stories will be selected for our next meeting and promise to be of the same high standard. It is generally conceded that everyone has a story to tell. Join our group and tell us yours. We would love to hear from you. Next meeting at the Beerwah Library, 10.00am on July 30.

Gowinta farms - Sunshine Coasts' largest strawberry producer Isn’t it amusing how long we can live in a town or region and still be surprised to hear there’s still a couple of hidden treasures? Gowinta Farms new marketing manager, James Ashby grew up in Landsborough and regularly hears “I had no idea you were here”, but after appearing on Channel 7’s Great South East and in other local media recently, Gowinta Farms has seen a dramatic spike in local and tourist numbers. The Sunshine Coast’s largest strawberry farm caught the attention of Channel 7 programmers last season and marked Gowinta Farms as the regions fastest developing tourist hot spot. Local owner Leonard Smith and his family have developed the seven day a week venture into a place where people of all ages can come and pick their own strawberries, do a farm tour and enjoy a hearty home made meal in the café. The announcement of a new Petting Zoo due to open on August 7 is just another reason tourists with kids will flock to the farm.
Business Feature
Strawberry production at Gowinta Farms is in its peak for the next 10 weeks with packers expecting to output up to 70,000 punnets daily. Visitors can see first hand the packers at work from their two story viewing platform. The next intake of pickers and packers will be within the next couple of weeks and those looking for work can register at the farms café on Burys Road, Beerwah. Leonard Smith and his family employ the largest number of seasonal workers in the region with grey nomads and backpackers making up about 45 per cent of the 250 employees. There’s no better time to see Gowinta Farms, the Sunshine Coast’s local farming experience. Located at 205 Burys Road, Beerwah. Phone 5494 0365. Café and fruit shop open 7.00am to 5.00pm daily.

Two months ago we invited people to participate in a short course Community Speech Craft to improve their communication and public speaking skills. For those who participated, it was a great success. Most have decided they want to keep going, improving their listening, speaking and presentation skills. If you are interested and missed out on our first course now is your chance. Speech Craft like Toastmasters gives you the confidence and assurance in public presentations, characteristics we all admire. These skills are easily taught especially in a positive learning environment like ours. Come and hear for yourself the stories of former Speech Crafters, their accounts of victories over nerves and all that other ‘stuff’ that robbed them from having a voice. Toastmasters will hold the Speech Craft courses on the first Monday of each month, 6.45pm for 7.00pm start at the Church on the Rise (small hall), $5.00 per night from August 2. Phone Martine on 5496 9855 or Jenny on 5439 0066.

The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains recently focused on men’s health and came up with a pearler of an idea – a shed where retired men could get together, work on community projects, have a laugh and enjoy each other’s company. The members recently invited the Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle to join them on a guided tour and show off some of their projects. He is pictured (above) with Taffy, Brad, Richard, Robert and Peter. To obtain information on the Men’s Shed contact Bob McLean on 0427 606 240.

Our club met for our monthly lunch meeting on July 21 and we had a very interesting speaker in Chris Barrett who supplied us with lots of information on the workings of the eye and problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Our next outing is on August 4 when we go to the silent movie theatre at Pomona, transport is provided and the outing will include morning tea and a picnic lunch. We manage to arrange for some interesting speakers throughout the year for our lunch meetings and places for our outings. Anyone who would like to join us would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9049, Elaine on 5493 3939 or Lorraine on 5494 8444. The View Clubs raise funds for and supports the Smith Family Charity in all their functions. Federal Election date locked in
2010 Glasshouse Volunteer Awards
My Federal Election campaign is in full swing, now that the polling date has been set. Australians will cast their votes on August 21. The next few weeks will be a chance for me to reflect on what I’ve achieved for my electorate so far and announce my goals for Fisher for the next three years. I know that our rapidly expanding population will be a big issue for voters. I’ll also use my campaign to promote the Liberal National Coalition. I’m proud to be part of a very strong team which has an excellent alternative Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.
Volunteers rewarded
The tables are being turned for our community volunteers. Now they’re the ones getting a helping hand, in the form of more than $50,000 in grants. The funding has come from Australia’s Volunteer Grants 2010 initiative and will be used to pay for training courses, some equipment and fuel reimbursement. The money will be shared by 18 organisations in Fisher, including the Caloundra State Emergency Service and Maleny’s Rotary Club.
House of the Year
I was honoured to be part of an event celebrating one of the region’s key industries. The Master Builders Sunshine Coast Housing and Construction Awards were held on Saturday, July 17 at Novotel Twin Waters Resort. I announced the night’s major winner Braeden Constructions. Its stunning home on the slopes of Cooroy Mountain was named the 2010 Sunshine Coast Regional House of the Year. It’s the second year in a row the company has won the award.
It was a pleasure to meet with 93-year-old Nev Anning this month to present him with his certificate from the Glass House Volunteer Awards that were held in May. Our local community organisations are extremely important to the townships within Glass House and it’s great to recognise the volunteers behind them. Nev, who has always been an important contributor to the local community, is still an active member of several organisations including the Peachester History Committee.
Peachester Cattle Dip to be preserved
An important piece of Glass House history is being given $20,000 towards maintenance which will preserve the site for future generations. The Peachester Cattle Dip was used in the early twentieth century and was vital to protecting the cattle and dairy farm industry in South East Queensland from the spread of cattle tick. I’m pleased to see this distinctive part of our local heritage protected in this way.
Preparing for bushfire season
Being ready for the bushfire season is incredibly important for the livelihood of our families. A new bushfire safety campaign, Prepare.Act. Survive, encourages residents who live near bushland to create a Bushfire Survival Plan to best prepare their homes and families for a bushfire. There are a number of simple actions that can help prepare for bushfire season, from keeping your yard tidy by removing excessive vegetation, to planning what you would take if evacuating from a bushfire. For more tips on preparing your property for this bushfire season, visit www.rurarlfire.qld.gov.au

Community Plan update
State funding welcome
Thank you to the Queensland Government and Minister for Child Safety and Sport, Phil Reeves, for awarding $87,728 toward installation of lighting at Skippy Park. This funding boost which builds on the recent council budget announcement will enable the park to move forward in a timely manner and ensure the sporting clubs who will call this park home are able to use the sports field at night. The State Government grant was assessed through the North Coast Regional Office, Department of Communities (Sport and Recreation and Community Participation) and I would also like to thank Regional Manager Steve White.
Lions Changeover dinner
I recently attended the Beerwah Lions Changeover Dinner held at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club. Always a great evening, Beerwah Lions donated generously to a large number of community organisations. Outgoing President Max Pinwill and his wife, Lioness Denise, were excellent hosts and proud of their year in the top job. The Changeover saw second-year newlyweds Ken and Sharon Loveday installed to lead the club for 2010/11 along with a team of enthusiastic executive support. Congratulations Beerwah Lions for your wonderful community service.
Skip the queue, we’ll call you
Callers to Sunshine Coast Council no longer need to pick up a telephone, thanks to leading-edge technology introduced last week. Web Call Back is now live across the Coast, allowing callers to log an online call-back request whenever they want to ring Sunshine Coast Council for information or conduct business over the telephone. Customers simply go to council’s website and log their name, suburb and number before clicking on the ‘call me’ button. A customer service officer then automatically telephones them to deal with their query. This service is available to all callers during business hours, with a rapid turn-around time and is an addition to the usual ways of contacting council and does not replace any other services. For after hours emergencies, phone 5475 7272 or 1300 007 272.
Dentures?
Council is preparing its Community Plan, a document that shows where the people and communities of the Sunshine Coast want to be and what our communities will look like in 2030. This Community Plan will then guide council’s decision making over the next 20 years. As part of developing the plan, council is undertaking a community visioning project called Zooming into 2030 where people can submit an image and a caption that shows what their 2030 looks like. Council will then use some of these images and captions to illustrate the plan itself. In other words, key elements of our community’s vision for the future will have been created by members of our community, which makes a lot of sense. Entries will be judged on how well the image illustrates what 2030 on the Sunshine Coast might look like; how well the caption expresses the concept of our place our future; the quality and originality of the image and the wit and originality of the caption. The Mayoral prize will be selected by participants at the 2010 community conference in October. I encourage you all to send submissions to zooming@sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au The deadline is 5.00pm, Friday, September 17, 2010.

Online counselling: Another way to get help for depression and anxiety Deputy CEO of beyondblue: the national depression initiative, Dr Nicole Highet says online e-therapy may be an effective alternative for people with depression and anxiety who can’t or won’t access help from mental health professionals. “Online counselling gives people the opportunity to log onto a computer, in the privacy of their homes and work through various programs which will teach them how to identify and take control of negative and unhelpful thought patterns which underpin conditions like depression and anxiety. The beauty of these programs is that not only are many of them free, but people can choose to remain anonymous,” she said. Dr Highet said online therapy for example, could help someone who has an anxiety disorder. “It’s common for someone with anxiety to view situations as being more dangerous than they are in reality. For example, a person afraid of flying will be obsessed with the possibility of the plane crashing, even though in reality they know this is highly unlikely, which would cause the person to feel extremely anxious and overwhelmed throughout the trip or avoid plane travel altogether, which could impact negatively.” She said, similarly, people with depression view themselves and their situations negatively. She said people could consult a health professional to learn how to manage these thoughts and bring these feelings under control through talking therapies like Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Alternatively, you can go to the e-mental Health Directory on the beyondblue website to link to a range of e-mental health services in Australia.

Healthy relationships for healthy living Positive relationships are important for good health. If you have supportive, loving relationships you are more likely to feel happy and satisfied with your life. Many people who visit counsellors are well adjusted individuals, but are simply experiencing difficulty in one particular area, such as family relationships. Christine Perry, a relationship specialist at Hinterland Counsellors in Beerwah, said counselling can facilitate change by providing an opportunity for people to tell their stories and be heard, explore their experiences, discover and access resources, and consider options for a more positive future. Christine’s background encompasses many years in teaching and pastoral care, and 10 years professional experience in relationship and family counselling. She works extensively with couples, children and individuals facing a variety of life challenges such as relationship difficulties, parenting issues, anger management, depression, anxiety, grief and trauma. Stargazer August 2010
with Chirone Witsen In the night sky, you can see Venus, Mars and Saturn shining brightly in the west just after sunset throughout this month. Venus moves into the diplomatic sign of Libra on Saturday, August 7. With Venus, Mars and Saturn all now in Libra, there is a major focus on committed relationships, with passion, grace and harmony the main ingredients. The New Moon falls in Leo on Tuesday, August 10 signifying a perfect time to re-energise and revitalise. Leo is a fire sign, full of passion and enthusiasm for life, with a natural warmth and generosity of spirit. Wherever this New Moon falls in your chart, this is the area of your life that will receive a boost of new energy and vitality. If your birthday is close to this New Moon, this is the beginning of a significant new cycle in your sense of self and purpose. This New Moon is exact at 1.08pm. The 24 hour period immediately following is a powerful time for manifestation, so put out your intentions! Mercury goes retrograde on August 21, so make sure important transactions are completed at least a week beforehand to avoid delays and communication breakdowns. Be careful with all forms of communication. Try to avoid signing contracts in this period and be prepared to revise anything you agree to during this time. Mercury is retrograde for three weeks until September 13. The Full Moon in Pisces falls on Wednesday, August 25. This is a dreamy, romantic time which can bring a yearning for oneness and spiritual fulfilment. Falling close to Chiron and Neptune, this Full Moon focuses on our healing journeys and sheds light on any patterns of addiction or any lack of boundaries we may have. There is great potential now to heal these issues. The Full Moon is exact at 3.04am AEST. De Burrows, Beerwah Chris Harrison, Buderim “Not so much locally but nationally there’s “A local issue in this the health issue. And area is the traffic, interest rates that are what they’ve done affecting the younger with the roads. I don’t people with their think it was the best loans. It’s terrible idea they’ve had and because they give I think diverting the them so much to move traffic away from into these houses, the town wasn’t their government grants for best idea for the local new home owners, businesses. The main but in six months time issue for the nation is they’ve taken it all definitely work place back off them because agreements, that sort they put the interest of thing. I don’t think rates up - so they’ve any of the big guys achieved nothing and really have a clue, now they’re in lots of they don’t see it from trouble.” our level.” Trevor, Mitre 10, Glass House Mountains “The big issue really is customer confidence out in the market place with the price of fuel, the cost of living, which is probably the key factor. For the smaller regions the influx of the larger chains, they’re squeezing the small business out and once they get control it’s going to be open slather. Nationally top of the list is the politicians being able to make a decision and stand by it, that’s where we’ve lost confidence in what’s told to us to actually what happens.”
Kay, Serendipity, Glass House Mountains “One of the main issues is the cost of living for people; they are just getting to the stage where people can hardly afford to live. Everything’s going up except income and that affects business. Plus people are living in fear of interest rates going up every month. When the interest rates go up it affects business because people won’t spend. Cost of living, more so than education, to me is what people are worrying about the most. Every time you get a bill it’s gone up.”
Graeme Ossedryver, Glass House Mountains “Local issues are maybe a bit more tourism in the area, promote a few more jobs. Nationally the whole system is completely wrong. It should be a central body of people who say ‘okay we need a health minister so we find a doctor who’s been in the health system’, ‘road minister, someone who’s worked in roads’ - you need someone who knows the system, knows how it works. This chopping and changing people who run the country is sending us broke, it’s an absolute joke.”
Jo Rosenlund, Glass House Mountains “Locally I think they need to really work on schooling, they need to fund it so kids are getting a good education. Nationally there are lots of issues at the moment: the basics of schools, health and employment. It would be good to get more Australians back into the workforce. I think the boat people are a big problem. I don’t have any grievances with immigrants coming in the correct way but the amount of people coming across in the boats, that’s a big weight on government funding which the taxpayers have to fund.”
Tanith Aslette, Beerwah “Locally issues are education, infrastructure and jobs for the teenagers. There’s not that much in the area for them at the moment. Nationally the insulation scheme seems to be coming up quite a bit in the news at the moment because it’s one of the major goof-ups that they made. Also the Septic Tank Odour Problems? ‘Backstabbing Rudd’ as they keep calling it; Natural Resource Protection is a Sunshine Coast based I think that will cause company that deals with waste water management and a few issues. Another issue is the mining tax, the control of odours. but health is a big one, We are offering a free trial to eligible septic tank owners it’s not too flash in a lot of places.” to try out our natural product to combat odours and
facilitate the breakdown of waste. The trial is easy and all you will have to do is dose your tank once a week and keep a log of any improvement. Please phone 5438 1643 for more detail.
Things 2 do
Are you getting enough sleep? Australian sleep researchers from CIRUS at the University of Sydney have teamed up with ABC Science to find out how we’re all sleeping. The Big Sleep Survey is on through August and will answer some interesting questions such as how much sleep are we actually getting? Have mobiles and laptops in the bedroom affected our sleep, how many people experience ‘parasomnias’, such as sleepwalking, sleep talking, night terrors and restless leg syndrome? And is someone’s snoring Dr Karl Kruszelnicki driving you crazy? “We’re all too busy these days and we get so much information coming at us from everywhere about how we should live our lives – what to eat, how to exercise, what hazards to avoid. But scientists need to know more about one of the most important things in our lives – sleep. Thirty per cent of your life is spent sleeping, if you don’t get it right it can have a serious impact on how you function every day. By joining the Big Sleep Survey you can help researchers find out more about our sleeping habits and maybe provide some insights to make sure we are all getting it right,” said Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, one of the Big Sleep Survey spokespeople. The first Sleep Survey was run in Australia 10 years ago. Researchers now want to know how changes in technology, especially laptops and mobiles, have edged their way into our sleep time. Go to http://sleepsurvey.net.au/ to register for the Big Sleep Survey 2010. Do the questionnaire about your sleep habits and submit it anytime in August 2010. You can save your answers and go back to them later. All participants in the Big Sleep Survey are in the running for a prize to keep you awake way past bedtime. Winners choose between a smart-phone (such as iPhone, Blackberry or your choice), an e-reader (such as iPad, Kindle or your choice), a games console (Nintendo or your choice) or $1,000 worth of books from ABC shop. The Big Sleep Survey 2010 is a National Science Week Project undertaken by the ABC in conjunction with CIRUS and funded by the Australian Government.

Democracy in action
Several months ago I approached our councillor, Anna Grosskreutz, about building an extension of pathway along Old Gympie Road and down into Shaws Road. To her credit over the following months she continued to contact me about options, its approval and other subsequent questions she had about its placement. It was so nice to be heard by our local councillor and to see that ordinary people can approach the council and see results. Thank you Anna for taking the time to help in this small but beneficial project. Karen McPherson Beerwah
Stop the blame game, action needed now Stop the blame game, action needed now Due to family circumstances, I have had the responsibility of dropping off and collecting my five-year-old daughter at Beerwah State School this week. The car park / drop off / collection area that is currently in place at the school is simply not sufficient to meet the demands of the current pupil numbers. In my opinion it is unsafe. There are too many cars and coaches and not enough room. With the rapidly expanding population of Beerwah and therefore an increase in pupil numbers, I fear the worst is going to happen sooner or later. What made me even more determined to write this letter, is the sign at the front of the school put there by the federal government, advertising the new buildings being built, as part of the nation building project. I am not politically motivated and this letter is not an attack on the current government, nor is it an attack on the school and its employees. But what the school needed before the new buildings was a revamp of the current parking / pick up / drop off arrangements. So why wasn't it addressed? And please, don't fob me off with departmental responsibility or budget allocation. Whether it be local council, main roads, state or federal government responsibility, surely the safety of our children comes before bureaucracy? Spencer Ives Beerwah

JULY 28 2010
04/11/1939 – 21/07 2010 The local area has lost one of its real characters last week with the passing of Gordon Dorman. Gordon was often seen around town wearing shorts in the middle of winter, barefoot, hair uncombed, with his smiling freckled face delivering fruit to his many friends. Gordon grew fruit including custard apples, avocadoes, and limes on his farm just out of Beerwah. Gordon lost his seven year battle with cancer last Wednesday. He faced this battle with the same strength and determination he showed throughout his life. Maybe it was his persistent and unrelenting manner which saw him involved in many cancer trials. He always seemed to outlive all of the other subjects. Gordon leaves his wife Kay and his sons Michael, Jason, and Scott. They have lost a spirited single minded father who was not afraid to speak his mind. Gordon’s funeral service will be at 11.00am on Friday, July 30 at the Gregson and Weight funeral chapel in Caloundra.
Glasshouse Country Uniting Church A Caring Christian Community Twin Peaks Drive, Beerwah Sunday Worship & Youth Program 8.30am Phone: 5494 6187 All Welcome!
Ken Goodger Glasshouse Country Anglican Church It is said that in polite society one shouldn’t talk about religion, politics and that other thing starting with ‘s’, which rhymes with ‘Lex’ and about which I as a minister of the church should know nothing. Fortunately or unfortunately, I have a keen interest in all three. This makes it difficult for me until August 21, as I have opinions about the upcoming election which may get me into trouble. Not because I will favour one party above another, but because I’m having a hard time with our political leaders at this time. Political leadership nowadays seems to be very manufactured. Once upon a time politicians had a bit of spunk and bravado, and a bit of humour. Perhaps the most famous was Sir Winston Churchill, who when told by Lady Astor, “Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your coffee”, replied, “if you were my wife Madam, I would drink it!” Australia’s longest-serving Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies was also known for his rapier wit. Once on the campaign trail he was heckled by a local member of the Labor party who said, “tell us all you know Bob, it won’t take long.”
Vale Gordon Richard Dorman
As quick as a flash, Menzies replied, “I will tell you everything we both know, it won’t take any longer!” Have we become so keen to criticise politicians that they now believe they need to watch every little thing they say? Will we encourage political leaders whose words are so scripted that they lack any substance? Are we already there? I hope not. Life (including religion and politics, oh and yes, the other thing as well) needs a little colour, that’s why God made them.
Locals share travel experience Following morning tea at 9.30am on Thursday, August 5 at Glasshouse Country Uniting Church in Twin Peaks Drive Beerwah, Chris and Martin Bell will be showing a photo story DVD of their trip to Japan. Interested members of the community are more than welcome to come along for a morning of warm friendship.

We are starting to collect the community information for the Rotary 2011 calendar. We would like to offer all community groups in the Glasshouse Region the opportunity to have any special event added as a date claimer. If you have an event, deliver the information to Beerwah Photographics before Thursday, August 6 or call Ilia on 5494 0888 or email the details to ilia@beerwahphotographics.com.au Yes, we’re still walking and would love you to join us. We walk each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6.30am for about an hour. We meet at Martin Rungert Park and walk a variety of routes about the local area. It’s a great way to start the day and to meet new friends. This is a Heart Foundation group activity with certificates being awarded for the number of walks completed. You don’t have to walk every day, or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can. We do hope to see you soon.

All publications are advertised on our website www.landsboroughmuseum.org.au From time to time books are damaged and at present we have a small number at reduced prices. Second hand soft and hard covers are also available at ridiculously low prices. We provide tourist information for the touring public and encourage local businesses to drop their brochures in. Maps of the area are available also. It’s good to see locals using the bike tracks and stopping off at the museum for a restful visit along the way. The Council is looking at the network of bike tracks and as soon as maps are available we will let you know. Most days you’ll see Ken on the front counter. Ken has been a volunteer for so long we can’t remember when he first arrived. He also collects statistics, scans newspapers, helps with cleaning, helps at working bees and most importantly makes our morning cuppas.
Our laundry area is the next area to undergo a facelift. One of our volunteers has just restored a Mangle (pictured) which was used at Mooloolah at the end of the 19th century. The Mangle was the forerunner to the old wringer. It was probably used at large establishments like hotels or hospitals. Its large rollers were made of wood.

Down & dirty with Brownie brownie@gcnews.com.au Jobs for the yard in August
What’s on in August
• It’s a good time to prune and fertilise hibiscus so they develop a bushy habit and produce lots of flowers in summer. • Don’t forget to water the veggie garden twice a week. Although it’s cooler, the winter winds will drain the moisture from the soil. • If you’re growing pineapples, give them a side dressing of complete fertiliser in late August. They like acid soils, so avoid using lime. • Spray your mango tree with a copper based spray to fight anthracnose disease. • It’s not too late to plant a bed of potatoes. Use seed potatoes to minimise the risk of disease problems. • Prune your scrappy looking geraniums and use the cuttings to strike new plants.

New website makes saving money easier A new website is helping Queenslanders make every dollar count. Community Services Minster Karen Struthers said the new Every Dollar Counts website would help Queenslanders access rebates and concessions on offer throughout the state. "The website is a one stop shop for Queensland Government and Federal Government concessions, making it even easier for people to get the cost of living subsidies they're eligible for," Ms Struthers said. "We already have one of the broadest range of concessions, rebates, and discounts in Australia but that's only half the job. "This website will help people know what help is available so they can access it." Every Dollar Counts brings together information about a number of concessions, including: • The increased electricity rebate up from $190.85 to $216.21 each year to help pensioners and seniors meet the costs of essential household expenses • New electricity concession of $216.21 each year for low income Queenslanders who have Multiple Sclerosis, or other chronic medical conditions significantly affected by changes in temperature • Increased electricity life support concession from $388.65 to $440.30 each year for an oxygen concentrator; and $260.26 to $294.85 each year for a kidney dialysis machine • Increased reticulated natural gas rebate from $59.42 to $61.21. Ms Struthers said the Bligh Government provided more than $1.3 billion in concessions to Queenslanders. Go to www.qld.gov.au/everydollarcounts or phone 13 13 04 to find out what concessions you may be eligible for.

Sports results Beerwah Bulldogs Contributed by Dean Roberts
The Bulldogs travelled down to Caboolture on Sunday looking to build on their great effort at Beerwah the week before. The Under 18’s were looking to cement their place in the top five against the Snakes and after a few anxious moments early gathered momentum to record a 28 -10 victory. With four games to go and two of them at Beerwah, the Bulldogs are hitting their straps at the right time of the season to give themselves a crack at the title. The Reserve Grade continued their most impressive recent form by pushing the first placed Caboolture side all the way to go down narrowly 18 -10. Special mention this week must go to the Reserve Grade side who really aimed up against a much bigger team and showed the true Bulldog spirit to hang in until the final whistle to just go down in what was a great game of footy.
Domino’s Pizza Players Player Awards went to Ashley Sleeman (U18) and Cody Chapman (Reserve Grade). The Bulldogs head up to Noosa on Sunday to take on the Pirates and would love to see all the supporters come along again to offer support. Reserve Grade Caboolture Snakes – 18 – (Michael Criminale 1, Robert Parker 1, Travis Baker 1, John Saunders 1 - Tries) (Travis Baker 1 - Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 10 - (Cody Chapman 1, Gary Atkinson 1 - Tries) (Arthur Soanes – 1 Goals) Under 18 Beerwah Bulldogs – 28 – (Connor Ferguson 1, Ashley Sleeman 1, Daniel Kidd 1, Jordan Sutton 1, Lachlan Khun 1 – Tries)(Coady Bell 4 – Goals) def Caboolture Snakes – 10 – (Josh Armstrong 1, Andrew Meiers 1 – Tries)(Sean Brooks 1 – Goals)

“What do you think you’re doing?” asks the husband. “It’s my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,” replies the wife. Her husband retorts: “So does 24 cans of VB and it’s half the price.” On the PA system: “Cleanup on aisle five, we have a husband down.” Submitted by L. Brown, Palmview

A husband and wife are shopping at Coles in the local shopping centre. The husband picks up a case of VB and puts it in their trolley. “What do you think you’re doing?” asks the wife. “They’re on sale, only $10.00 for 24 cans,” he replies. “Put them back, we can’t afford them,” demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping. A few aisles further along the woman picked up a $20.00 jar of face cream and put it in the trolley.
