Hi everyone

Well each Monday morning when I decide on a topic for my column it is generally something that I can talk about for 200 words – which is not usually a hard task for someone who loves to chat. However, with the obvious topic being the weekend’s Federal election I feel a bit challenged by what I have to say? While we know that Peter Slipper has been returned to the seat of Fisher for the 6th time, and in the electorate to our south, Longman, they now have the youngest ever representative in Federal government, what we still don’t know is who will have the top job? I was going to say we don’t know who the winner is, but I guess the real winners are the successful Independent candidates who now get to negotiate with the two major parties to form a government. We also know that this election

saw a significant increase in informal votes – in Fisher there was almost double the number from the last election with 5.43 per cent informal, a 2.62 per cent increase from the previous election. Well this at least means that should be about 2,000 voters in Fisher who won’t be able to write a letter to the editor complaining about the candidate they voted for disappointing them. Yep, I am someone who tries to find the silver lining – so here’s hoping that a successful outcome can be reached with a hung parliament and that having independents to answer to may bring about good decisions for the country. Regards,

RJW Accounting & Taxation Services James Asher, Senior Sergeant Peter Feldman and machinery operator Chris Barrett with one of the tree harvesters, which has a value of around $700,000 said his company, which is based in Caboolture, has around $20 million of equipment located at various locations in the Beerburrum Forest, and his business couldn’t sustain the huge cost of the ongoing damage and theft. “We’ve just come through an economically difficult time with the global financial crisis, and it’s not just the cost to replace or repair the highly specialised equipment we use, it’s also the downtime while we wait for repairs, and it has the potential to impact right across the community,” James said. “By working together with our local police, hopefully we can stamp out this illegal activity.” Senior Sergeant Feldman said he urged the local community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity near forestry areas to police.

Local police have teamed up with Queensland Forestry and local contractor Ashers Logging to help stamp out the growing cost of vandalism to property in our local forestry areas. Acting officer in charge of the Beerwah Station, Senior Sergeant Peter Feldman said a recent increase in the number of reported cases of vandalism to harvesting machinery in areas of the Beerburrum Forest had prompted stakeholders to meet to come up with a way to address the issue. Senior Sergeant Feldman, said the meeting, facilitated by Queensland Forestry, had identified a number of practical ways to curb potential vandalism and theft, including extra police patrols in hot spots, and improved communication between contractors and Queensland Police in relation to the location of machinery outside of working hours. “By working together, we hope to nip this problem in the bud before it escalates any further,” he said. Senior Sergeant Feldman said while police don’t have any leads at the moment, it appeared the vandalism and theft was being carried out by individuals with knowledge and experience of the machinery. The Caloundra Aerodrome will remain in its current location until the state government commits to providing a fully constructed replacement aerodrome at Johnston Road, in the Glasshouse Mountains.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbot said council has given the state government three months to commit to funding the full cost of the relocation of the aerodrome to its preferred site, at Johnston Road, which he said came from not only a strategic planning position but also to give the businesses the opportunity they need to grow. Cr Abbot said council last week agreed to not move the aerodrome as it was a state government responsibility.

We have advised the Queensland Government that council will retain operation of Caloundra Aerodrome in its current location until the state formally commits to moving the aerodrome, and that relocation to Johnston Road will be with conditions, Cr Abbot said.

Glasshouse Country News For all your advertising needs please call Marylyn on 5494 6066 or email advertising @gcnews.com.au

The conditions are: The replacement aerodrome has to be constructed by December 2014, at Johnston Road as per council’s Statement of Proposals and within the Glasshouse Mountain Protection Zone, and at no cost to council. Council will continue to manage and operate the aerodrome in its new location at Johnston Road. The current Caloundra Aerodrome businesses and lessees need to be relocated at no cost to themselves or council. The existing Caloundra Aerodrome site needs a structure plan developed jointly by the State Government and council. This will ensure outcomes as outlined in the adopted Sunshine Coast Statement of Proposals, the document which is informing the development of the new Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, are achieved for the Caloundra Major Regional Activity Centre. Mayor Bob Abbot said that council has requested the Minister for Infrastructure and Planning to provide a quick response. “Council’s final condition is for the state to provide a commitment to the conditions within the next three months. “Until this issue has been finalised council will be unable to move forward with the Caloundra South Structure Plan process.” What do you think about plans to relocate the aerodrome to the Glass House Mountains? We’re keen to hear your thoughts. Simply give us a call on 5494 6066 or email editorial@gcnews.com.au

Local’s life inspires winning poem by Rosemary Hayes

When Kym Eitel from Rockhampton heard about Steve Ralph, 56, from the Australian Teamsters Hall of Fame at Glass House Mountains, his spine-tingling experiences inspired her to write a poem which last month won the 2010 Australian Championships for Written Bush Poetry.

RSL Club FRIDAY 27TH

Steve Ralph's Cobb and Co coach

While the poem is based on Steve’s encounter with a phantom black horse (which he had never told people about at first because he didn’t think he’d be believed) his whole life is a fascinating tale which is sure to inspire many others to achieve their dreams. Originally from Tamworth, Steve trained as a toolmaker, moved to Queensland, became the boss of one of the biggest key and lock firms in Australia, and was a self-confessed petrol head. But something was missing in his life. In the early 1980’s he sacked himself and with no prior knowledge of horses or coaches he bought himself a horse and a two wheeled cart, which he learnt how to drive. “It was a complete change,” he said. Soon people were hiring him and his horse and cart for various events. Through a friend (who taught Steve more skills with horses) Steve heard about an original Cobb and Co coach. Steve swapped his car for it which he restored by turning his skills as a toolmaker to timber. By now he had a team of four horses which he learnt how to drive in a paddock. He was told he would either learn that way or kill himself. “It makes you learn quick,” Steve said. From those humble beginnings, Steve started doing many long coach drives with his team including one from Melbourne to Sydney via an inland route in 1988 where he crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge with his horses without permission. “I was the first bloke to do it and get away with it,” he laughed. Around that time Steve heard about a man from Holland who held the world record for the most harnessed horses pulling a coach - 20 horses. In 1990 Steve harnessed 24 horses, had 860 feet of reins, and during a drive from Surat to Yuleba, retracing Cobb and Co’s last run, set a new world record. Steve had never known why he had been drawn to horses and coaches, then one day he discovered his great-great uncles were Cobb and Co Coach drivers and their father owned the first registered station in Queensland called Eden Station. Steve didn’t know that Kym was going to write a poem inspired by him but is thrilled by her win. “My whole goal in life is to bring some of these stories (of the past) out and how that is achieved I really don’t care. “Finding your journey in life is a very important thing – some people never do. I consider myself very lucky that I have. I’m very privileged to have stayed in homes of the two families that built Cobb and Co. “My message is to have the courage to follow your dream, focus and work at it and the rewards will be there that you never anticipated.” Below is an extract of the poem, 'The Black Horse in the Lead', by Kim Eitel. For a copy of the poem, contact the GCNews office on 5494 6066 or email reception@gcnews.com.au

The Black Horse In The Lead Eight horses strained with leathers stained from mouth-foam, mud and sweat. Through lightning’s roar, the driver swore at road ruts, deep and wet. The crunching squeals of stage coach wheels on rocks and gravel road, the ‘hya’ and ‘whoa’. the stop and go, the groan of heavy load. Two Cleveland Bays, two dappled greys, two mares of brumby breed then out in front, the leaders grunt two chestnuts take the lead.

B

by Kym Eitel

White knuckled grips and prayers on lips, exhausting, dripping heat. Tired ladies sighed and cursed the ride while children gripped the seat. No time for rest up Gunther’s Crest, the road a greasy state, hooves slipped and slid, wheels turned but skid, the coach held too much weight. Exhausted bays and weary greys. no energy or speed, mares gasp and heave, legs lurch and weave, tired chestnuts in the lead.

Help support our local chappy and be part of this year’s annual Ride for Chappy this weekend, on Saturday, August 28, kicking off with registration from 8.00am at the Beerwah State High School. For more details including this year’s route, contact Jamie Kerr on 0418 155 021 or 5439 0452 or email jlkerr2@bigpond.com Did you know one of the many activities of chaplaincy at Beerwah High is the ‘Dirt Bike Group’? This is a combination of weekly mechanical sessions at the school run by chaplaincy volunteers and yearly day rides run by SUQld (who employ chaplains). To date, 56 Beerwah High students have taken part in this group. It is a fantastic opportunity for kids to increase their confidence, expand their knowledge of their motorbikes and practice riding safely over different terrain. The students

also benefit from practicing teamwork and being mentored by great role models from the community. The dirtbike group has been very successful and it has been wonderful having parental involvement as well. One of the wonderful partnerships that has come about since we started this group in 2007 has been with ‘Sound Images’ from Maleny. They produced two of our three day ride DVDs, with music, interviews and awesome action packed footage of the riders on the tracks. These have proved to be fantastic mementos of the Dirt Bike Adventure for the families of students. If you want to know more about the Dirt Bike Group or chaplaincy in general please call Mike Turner at the high school on 5436 5333.

Additional RailBus for evening travel

Caboolture and Sunshine Coast residents will soon have an additional evening public transport option with a new daily bus service stopping at all train stations between Caboolture and Nambour. TransLink spokesman Andrew Berkman said the new RailBus service would be trialled to fill the gap in the current Nambour line train timetable between 7.27pm and 9.28pm. “This bus service is the best option as many of the evening trains north of Caboolture average only 30 passengers per service,” Mr Berkman said. “This new daily service will give residents more convenience and stop at all train stations along the Nambour line. “Patronage on this service will be monitored to assess whether it becomes a permanent service.” Mr Berkman said TransLink had invested more than $13 million to improve public transport services on the Sunshine Coast. “This investment has seen patronage trips for urban services increase by 62.5 per cent over this period,” Mr Berkman said. “TransLink is continually reviewing and upgrading services in response to this patronage increase. “Last June, TransLink added more than 8,000 weekly seats to coincide with the opening of the $5.5 million University of the Sunshine Coast Bus Station. “In June, a $218,500 package was put into service to improve the reliability of bus services on the Sunshine Coast and provide residents with better access to public transport services improving routes 601 (Caloundra to Maroochydore), 618 (University of the Sunshine Coast to Minyama via Mountain Creek), 622 (Peregian Springs to Kawana via Maroochydore and Bli Bli) and 632 (Noosa to Cooran via Cooroy and Pomona). An additional morning and afternoon peak service on the Caboolture line was expected to commence this week. For more information on public transport, visit the TransLink website www.translink.com.au or phone the Call Centre on 13 12 30.

Down and dirty in Seniors Week

Recently, as part of our much-celebrated Seniors Week, a group of our Glass House Seniors (GMAN members) gathered to plant 24 Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines in Settlers Park. A previous planting of 18 vines were reduced to only five after being covered by water during previous floods. The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly and the host vine Pararistolochia praevenosa are both endangered species in south east Queensland. However, a program of intense planting of the vines by members of the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network has given this beautiful butterfly a ‘second chance’. Vines can be purchased from the GMAN nursery by contacting Gwen, phone 5493 0029.

with Dr Braxton Turnage How to Strengthen Your Immune System Your body has a natural defence mechanism, your immune system, that fights off sickness and disease. When you are exposed to foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses, a strong immune system will quickly detect and launch an attack against those invaders. Your immune system is also responsible for detecting and killing cancer causing cells before they can cause problems. This makes a strong immune system vitally important. The biggest indication of a weak immune system is frequent colds, flu, and infections. These are obvious signs that your body is not fighting off invaders as well as it should. Luckily, there are ways to strengthen your immunity. Regular moderate exercise and sufficient rest, along with a proper diet and supplements are simple things you can do at home. But there’s more. Because your brain and nervous system controls all other systems of your body, including your immune system, an optimally functioning nervous system is essential to a healthy immune system. Your body is self regulating machine. When something is not right in your body, such as bacteria invading your bloodstream, it sends a message through your nerves up to your brain. Once the brain receives the message, it then sends a controlling message back out through your nerves to tell your body how to fix the problem. The body then knows how to react, such as sending more white blood cells that will attack the invader, or raising your body temperature (fever) to kill the bacteria. Your spine is meant to protect these vital messages passing back and forth through your body. However, when spinal bones become misaligned and interfere with this message rather than protect it, your body’s systems, including immunity, are unable to function properly. Chiropractic adjustments are essential to a healthy nervous system and normal body function.

Feeling the Flu? If you are 55-80 years of age and are currently experiencing symptoms of the flu, including a temperature of 37.8°C or higher, you may be eligible to help evaluate an investigational medication. Influenza (the flu) is a virus that affects millions of people worldwide each year. And while there are flu treatments available, there’s growing concern that the flu virus may build resistance to today’s medications. In addition, current treatments are sometimes unable to treat new strains of the flu. As a result, more research into alternative flu treatments is still needed.

FLU RESEARCH STUDY Local doctors are currently conducting a medical research study evaluating an investigational flu treatment. To pre-qualify for this study, you must: • Be 55 to 80 years of age, • Be experiencing two or more symptoms of the flu, AND • Have a fever of 37.8°C or higher. Qualified participants will receive study-related medical evaluations and study medication at no cost. In addition, reimbursement for time and travel may also be provided.

A group of local guitar students have celebrated putting together their first CD by throwing a concert for family and friends. The concert, held recently at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club, featured live versions of songs appearing on the CD, as well as many other tracks practised by the students. Assistance from friends allowed the students to set themselves up in a makeshift band, accompanied by drums and bass guitar, preparing them for possible future live gigs and band scenarios. The music ranged from classical to modern rock and culminated in a series of impromptu songs, learnt on the spot in about a minute.

The College’s Funfest was a great start to the term with locals young and old from the community turning up for a highly enjoyable day out. Tremendous talents were showcased, large amounts of sugar were consumed and smiles and laughter were the outfits of choice. Also in August, GCCC once again took out the Percentage Trophy Winners at the Secondary Central District Athletics Carnival, meaning that the College had the best performance per athlete in the district. Congratulations to the students who participated in the action-packed two day event. Our Year 12’s are anxiously awaiting their QCS testing in just a couple of weeks, as they excitedly count down to being the second group of graduates from the College. Other secondary students are about to commence auditions for next year’s College musical, the classic ‘Calamity Jane’. As the Deadwood Stage starts a-rollin’ on over the plains at GCCC, our 10 year celebrations are growing closer. Whip crack-away!

New facilities opened at Peachester State School Senator for Queensland Mark Furner was delighted to officially open the new multi-purpose hall and technology room at Peachester State School recently. The facilities were built as part of the Australian Government’s Building the Education Revolution (BER). Peachester State School received $925,000 under the National School Pride (NSP) program and Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) element of the BER. The BER is a key element of the Australian Government’s $42 billion Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan to support jobs, stimulate local economies and invest in important infrastructure for the long term.

Senator Mark Furner, School captains Jacob Hume and Emma Hatcher, P&C president Louise Lewis and principal Rosemarie Hodder cutting the cake to celebrate the opening of the new hall and technology room

Senator Furner congratulated Peachester State School on its new facilities and spoke of the benefit to both the school and local community. “It has been wonderful to see the whole school community working together to deliver significant projects like the multipurpose hall and the technology room,” Senator Furner said. “I spoke earlier to the school captains and they told me they were delighted to see these new facilities being built at their school.” The $1.28 billion National School Pride (NSP) program is providing funding to more than 9,400 eligible schools in every state and territory for minor infrastructure and refurbishment. The $14.1 billion Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) element is providing funding to over 7,900 eligible primary schools in every state and territory for major new infrastructure. “It is wonderful to be here at Peachester State School celebrating the opening of this new hall and to witness first hand, the impact this has had on this school and the local community,” Senator Furner said. “I am also pleased to announce that this particular project is employed many from the building industry, which is exactly what we strived to achieve – this is the essence of the Economic Stimulus Plan.” Further information about this project and all schools funded under the BER is available at www.buildingtheeducationrevolution.gov.au or at: www.economicstimulusplan.gov.au

Mooloolah artist’s Kenilworth exhibition If you’ve never seen Mooloolah artist Sue Gilmour’s vibrant paintings before then now is a great time to plan a trip to Kenilworth. From August 22 to September 12, an exhibition of Sue’s work will be held at the Lasting Impressions Gallery at Kenilworth, one of the region’s leading art galleries. In 1977 Sue obtained her honours degree in fine art in London but she didn’t pursue painting at that time. After a move to Australia she had a busy life but five years ago her twin sister made an important observation. “My sister said, ‘I think you’re a painter, you should be painting’. So I started and it started to take off. I won a few awards in local competitions and people started wanting to buy my work,” Sue said. Her achievements since then include twice being a finalist for the Mayors Award at Kenilworth, having two galleries represent her and in

2009 she had an exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Gallery. Sue paints with acrylic mixed media and likes painting landscapes with people. “The environment really influences me, flooding rain, drought, things like that. My paintings are quite expressive, it’s not about representation, although you can recognise elements in it, it’s not completely abstract. It’s more about the feelings it produces in people,” she said. Sue does a have favourite painting. “Only because one of my sons qualified as a helicopter pilot and he took me up - to terrify me I think,” she laughs. “I did a painting looking down on the trees. I’ve had people want to buy it but I won’t (sell). “I’m doing some Ned Kelly’s at the moment that are part of the exhibition and I really like them,” she said. Surprisingly Sue finds exhibiting her work nerve-wracking. “Especially initially. I think works are quite personal. It’s not personal art, but it’s an emotional process. You look at them and you think they’re okay and then you think no they’re not. You become too familiar with them when they’re sitting in your studio, it’s only when you get a response from other people that you look at them again with different eyes,” she said. Artistic talent does run in Sue’s family. Her father was very artistic and a designer and his father was a mural painter. Sue may have started her artistic career later than some, but it’s something she will always do now. “I feel it’s who I really am,” she said. To see Sue’s exhibition at Kenilworth visit Lasting Impressions Gallery, located at 6 Elizabeth Street, Kenilworth. Her work can also be seen at www.lastingimpressionsgallery.net and www.redhillgallery.com.au

Rev George Woodward spoke with his granddaughter Flora, and Jordan Wright at the Annual Harvest of Hands and Lands Service on Sunday, August 15 at the Glasshouse Country Uniting Church. Members of the congregation brought food or plants they had grown, and cakes and biscuits and garments and jewellery they had made to display and sell. As our local Chaplaincy Service at Beerwah High School does not receive any government funding and has to raise all wages to keep the Chaplain Mike Turner at the school, the Uniting Church was pleased to be able to raise just over $450.00 to help keep this vital service.

A Danish exchange Contributed by Roz Bannan

Glasshouse Mountains Scout Group recently hosted two Danish scouts as part of the Scout International Student Exchange program. This year 10 Danish and one English Venturer Scout visited Queensland on a six week exchange. They gave up their summer holidays in Denmark to winter in Australia and go to school. Glasshouse Scout group was host to two Dory and Nemo girls, Anemone (Nemo) for six weeks and Kathrine (Dory) for two and a half weeks after a few weeks in Townsville. Nemo joined her host sister at Beerwah High School. They participated in all our Scouting activities, meetings at the Den, and a 'Where's Wally’ adventure hunt through Brisbane City. Glasshouse Mountains Venturer Unit joined with Caloundra and Kawana and Buderim Venturers for a mapping challenge on the streets of Sippy Downs, the map was printed without street names and upside down. Dory joined a group of Venturers and Leaders on a survival camp on the Gold Coast, fortunately all survived! We had a fantastic time trying to learn Danish and teaching the girls Aussie slang, they both spoke English perfectly. Nemo taught the Joeys, Cubs and Scouts how to play 'pløk' a Danish game, like twister, without the spots and a few more rules. We learnt about Danish Scouts, Nemo's Unit went on a seven day hike in Lapland, where the sun never goes down in the summer and yet there is still snow. One of the favorite reward badges to get in Denmark is the 'Shorty' badge. To be eligible to get this badge you have to wear shorts all year round - easy in Queensland but hard in Denmark where it snows for six months. This was a fantastic experience for our families and the Scouts, One of our Venturers is planning to go to Denmark during her summer holidays 2011. There will be more of a culture shock leaving Queensland's summer for the Danish winter.

Have you ever been to ‘A Reading of a Will’ where Murder and Mayhem rule through the entire proceedings while a dinner is in progress? Thirtytwo intrepid souls, all suitably attired in costumes befitting the character they were portraying, gathered at the Beerwah Hotel function room on Thursday, August 12 for the reading of the ‘will’ of the recently deceased Rick Rochester. During this reading many family secrets were laid bare and a murder was committed to protect a major recipient of this will. It was a fun and very enjoyable dinner for the change-over of office bearers for this club. The new president, Chris Magee thanked the outgoing president, Jennifer Moore and her committee, for their diligent and hard work during the past year. Best costume went to Hannah Brandli as the all knowing maids (she played two roles and the best acted part went to Chris Magee, the personal assistant, by a single point). Our Speech Craft Courses conducted through the co-operation of the local schools, and the monthly adult course, continue to be a great success. The normal Thursday morning meeting on August 12 was the club’s in-house competition for speech presentations. Congratulations to the winners of the different categories: Peter Agapow, humorous; and Jennifer Moore, evaluation. Eddie Barrett from Islander Club on Bribie Island gave a very funny speech in which he recalled several misadventures in his childhood that he aptly titled ‘Holy Terror’. Why don’t you come and join us for a morning of fun and laughter while learning about how to put words together and deliver them as a talk or speech? We will be meeting in the hall behind The Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah at 9.00am for a 9.30am start on Thursday, August 26. Come and join us for a morning of fun and laughter and learn how to put those ‘fears of speaking up in public’ behind you. Contact Kerry Gillam on 5493 0650 or Jen Hamilton on 5494 6005 for further information.

Beerwah Lions Service Club Update

Contributed by Hazel Imison, PR Manager

Contributed by Una Robinson

A special evening was conducted on August 11 with the induction of new Lion Gwen Kippen who is warmly welcomed into the club membership with her husband Doug. Lion Gwen was sponsored into the club by Lion Martin Sprott. Program chairman Lion Bob Banner organises interesting guest speakers and on August 11 those present met Chiropractor Braxton Turnage who works from the Wellness Centre in Beerwah. Braxton enlightened many on preventative health care versus ‘sick care’ which is when we basically become unwell and visit our medial professional for help. And all were made aware that all too often we could have done something for ourselves much earlier to prevent becoming unwell. Braxton responded clearly to all questions received from those present. His regular messages in GCNews are also very helpful and informative. Beerwah Lions members are working on the next years Glasshouse Business Directory and invite local businesses to be published. Lions ask the community to support local business. This activity is the Club’s major fundraiser with many local needy community groups benefitting in monetary or in kind assistance. The cover picture this time will be one taken by a member of the Beerwah

President Ken Loveday and new Lion Gwen Kippen

On Friday, August 20, a 10.00am meeting was held by the Womens Auxillary of the Beerwah/Peachester RSL Sub Branch at the Veterans Drop-In Centre. This was to discuss coming events for the exciting year ahead. The committee is brand new and ready to take off with Kaye Farrell as its acting president. Kaye comes with a wealth of knowledge from a varied and interesting background as a social worker who has chartered deep waters in running a Womens Respite Centre in Sydney. Kaye injects humour with a very down to earth attitude and a goal to create fun with fundraising. Jenny Boyes is Acting Secretary and is also a Welfare Officer for Veterans. We are all looking forward to our Fathers Day barbeque coming up on Friday, September 3 in the garden at the Drop-In Centre at 8.00am. This is open to all Veterans and wives/partners. Come and enjoy a hot breakfast and friends in our outdoor setting under the tree canopy!

Great news! Glass House Country Church community operate an emergency food bank and ‘drop in’ centre. It is easily accessible and open from 3.15pm to 5.00pm Mondays and Wednesdays and from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Fridays. It can be found in the hall at the Mary McKillop Centre, 160 Peachester Road, Beerwah. The centre was opened in response to the high level of unemployment on the Sunshine Coast due to the Global Financial Crisis. The centre does not confine the need for a helping hand to the unemployed, anyone who may need assistance is welcome whatever the circumstance, so drop in and have a chat, and a cup of tea, and meet the team.

You said it Letters to the Editor Peachester History Committee

An early local photographer Few people had access to photography in the early years of the last century. Grace Simpson was 13 when she bought her first camera. She had the further privilege of growing up in her father’s Beerwah Hotel. From the verandah of the two-storey building she had a view of the whole town, and was able to capture street scapes that are so prized by historians today. Grace learned to develop her negatives in an upstairs darkened room. The township of Beerwah was taking shape and her snaps record the layout and location of the mill houses, the butcher shop, a bakery, the first store, a fruit and paper shop, activities around her grandfather’s sawmill and a classic photo of the railway station building. Family shots show background details of the 1915 pub structure. A pupil teacher at the Coochin Creek Provisional School, and travelling to Brisbane for exams at the Normal School up from Central Station, she was able to take train shots of the Glasshouse Mountains. Coupled with riding her pony Bobs round the district, she built up a valued collection of mountain views. Still clear, they are in sharp contrast to today’s scene. It was the custom in the twenties to socialise as a group, and among her photos are nostalgic reminders of climbing the Coochin Hills, a hike to Mount Mellum School, an afternoon at Coolum Beach arriving on the Nambour sugar train, and numerous trips to Caloundra on Ken Hendren’s cream truck. One such special day included climbing over the Dicky wreck with a group shot on the deck. Vehicles were a rarity in Beerwah as Grace grew up. Those she photographed show the range of models at the time. Included are a Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Mystery Overland, Plymouth, Whippet, Graham Paige, de Sota and even a Harley Davidson motorbike and sidecar. During the seven years she spent at Norwood School near Gayndah she accumulated a priceless collection depicting both school and farming life. Fortunately more people with connections to the pioneers of our area are coming forward with unnamed photographs, usually stored in an old cardboard box and often in quality condition, seeking identification. This is an exciting and rewarding function of our history group. We owe a great debt to our photographers of the past and acknowledge especially the part played by Grace Hodgens, nee Simpson.

Letters are printed at the discretion of the editor, Lea Parkes and her policy is to include letters which focus on issues and are not about personally attacking other people. For a letter to be considered for printing it must be accompanied by the name, address and phone number of the sender. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Preference is given to letters under 300 words. Letters may be edited to make them more readable, but the meaning will not be changed. Regular correspondents will be limited to alternate issues to give everyone a chance to have their say. Letters must meet the Friday 12.00noon deadline. Views expressed in the 'You said it' page are those of the writer - and not this publication. Please send your letters to letters@gcnews.com.au or fax to 5494 6399.

Did I miss something?

Where or how did this Unity Water come about? More importantly, why would the Bligh Government seize our water in the first place, then sell it back at a price? If they did it once, what stops the revolving door of quick cash? Perhaps our Local Member or Councillor can assure us as to what is going on? Please let us know what the government envisages will happen in the next year or two, or 10? It is quite obvious that our Regional Council were unable to manage our water, but did I not hear that the Australian Labor Party are going to disperse truck loads of cash to five of these Regional Councils to carry out infrastructure? My question is simple. They can't manage our own water, so how will they manage infrasctructure? If I sit and look at this Unity Water, the more worried I become. Just think about this - the Traveston Dam or as it became known, the Travesty Debt. And now two separate desalination plants, one in Marcoola, the other on Bribie Island with a shiny new debt bubble for us to pay. So, out of the shadows comes Unity Water. So just what, or who, is Unity Water? It's like the dogs playing poker, these dogs have had their day. After all, the Queensland Government can't afford anything, they are broke. Unity Water required a loan and I believe Moreton Bay Regional Council leapt in there. They are laughing at present, as it looks like they will make a bob or a million out of the interest they have charged. However, who is going to build these two desalination plants? Ms Bligh has no money. Unity Water has no money and surely the two Regional Councils are short of a bob and have no money, so who is? I only went to third year at Tamworth High School, but I have never had a problem with mathematics. One and one makes billions of dollars in debt. We as ratepayers, and tax payers are going to have problems with Unity Water. I cannot see why it was ever allowed to materialise in the first place, and I cannot visualise where it is going to end, certainly not in our favour. Oh, by the way, has the Government paid for our water, yet? Brian Stallworthy Glass House Mountains

| AUGUST 25 2010

The Ebenezer Bush Dance recently held in Maleny was a runaway success. No sooner had the working team arrived at Grice's Nut Shed but people were lining up to get some hot tucker into their tums for the night. Before long there were wall to wall people and with dinner over it

didn't take long for John Wright the dance caller to have people on their feet and into it! People soon warmed up! What a night of fun it was, people dancing, clapping, laughing, bumping into each other, and mid way through the evening the dancers had a chance to catch their breath as another talented 'muso' Noel Gardener entertained the revellers! These perfumers’ are seriously worth considering for weddings, parties, festivals and community events etc. Families (young and old) had come from near and far, so the Ebenezer team is thinking that bush dances may be the way to go and become regular events! Half the fun of the night was dancing and laughing through a sequence of dance steps and the other half was finding that you could actually do it! Well some could anyway. It took Belinda and I, doubling up with laughter whilst bumping into each other, a while longer than most! At interval time, I gave an information-packed presentation about the work being done in Zambia and the latest news from project director Ranji Chara. A selection of donated chook sculptures was also sold on the night. These are part of an ongoing fundraiser specifically for a small chook farm to be established on the Ebenezer Farm in Livingstone. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped prepare, cook, serve, and clean and a special vote of thanks to Bob and Annette Grice for the use of their Macadamia Nut Shed. Last but not least thanks to all who attended! By the way $3,500 was raised for the Ebenezer orphans so a big thank you to Glass House Country News for printing our stories! See you all at our next fun, fundraiser! Phone Lenore on 5429 6194 or email admin@ friendsofebenezeraustralia.com for more information about the Ebenezer project. Long live good customer service

Recently my daughter needed a new battery for her car. As she is a bit short of money I took her to B and A Tyre and Mechanical as my son had won a voucher for there at a cent auction some time ago and passed it on as he didn’t need it. I was quite expecting that we would have to pay extra on top of the voucher as most places seem to just allow vouchers for labour charges only, but Ben from B and A accepted the voucher without any additional charges. With the economy the way it is at the moment I was very grateful to Ben that he was able to do that for us and he did so with a very cheery smile. He was very helpful even when I had called in there the night before after closing time. It is nice to see that there are still people around that aren't in a rush to get you out the door and are willing to give good service even when they aren't getting paid for it. Thanks Wildhorse Turf!

The Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club would like to sincerely thank Wildhorse Turf for their on-going support and generous donation of turf to cover our spectators mound close to our club house. This has eliminated dust and erosion and we are extremely grateful! Thanks! Renee Becker Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club Inc

Unity Water rip off

I would like people to check their accounts and compare them with their last rate notice under Council. The sewerage rate has risen, the fixed water access has risen. The one that stands out is the water usable charges. It is charged once at 0.50 (tier up to 600 L/day) Then it is charged for a second time under bulk water at 0.85 (why is it higher?). The rates have risen all up over $100.00 from Council which means Unity Water is simply ripping us off. Neville Beerwah

Festival of fun not far away

Just a reminder to the community about the Glass House Mountains State School’s Festival of Fun that will be held on Sunday, September 12, from 11.00am - 4.00pm. It is the school’s biggest FUNdraiser of the year and there are always lots of things to do and see. We are having a Best Green Thumb award this year. If you are wonderful in the garden and believe that you grow the best fruits or vegetables, enter the competition and see what the judges think. Maybe you have a beautiful baby or toddler and wish to enter into our baby photo competition? (More info in community notices). Of course you will be able to pick up some great homemade goodies or a bargain at the bric-a-brac stall. Most of all we are looking forward to seeing you there. Helicopters in the Glass House Mountains area again?

In reference to the article in last Friday’s Sunshine Coast Daily (August 20), remember the outcry about helicopters from Australia Zoo flying over our mountains? It is likely to happen again! The decision to move the Caloundra airport is still in limbo. The State Government has now left the final decision to our local Council. The Council says it needs the State Government to fund the project. The only proposed new location mentioned is Johnston Road, Glass House Mountains. This is a very swampy area and would be costly to landfill for the airstrip and surrounding buildings. Environmental issues would also make this an unwise choice i.e. proximity to Pumicestone Passage. The cost to move the Air Museum would be over $5 million. The question should be asked what would happen to the Air Cadets facility? This was established years ago and the original building is the historical World War 2 dental section. Many Cadets trained here have gone on to successful careers. Glass House Mountains is a rural and tourist area. The new Information Centre recorded about 30,000 visitors in the first 12 months, and this would only be a percentage of actual tourists visiting this area. We do not need an airstrip in our area! If you agree, I suggest you let your Council and our State Reps know your feelings on this proposal. Bob Malcolm Glass House Mountains

Glasshouse SES assist injured climber on Mt Tibrogargan By Dave Erbacher Last Sunday the Glasshouse SES Group was called at approximately 3.00pm to assist in the medical evacuation of an injured climber from the lower slopes of Mt Tibrogargan. A 35 year old couple from Brisbane had climbed the mountain a few times previously and were well prepared on the day. The climb had almost been successfully completed when James slipped on the last steep section of rock and sustained a suspected broken ankle. Other climbers attempted to assist James down the mountain but the pain was too severe and an emergency call was made. Paramedics, Jim and Scott from Beerwah attended as did the SES. After being strapped into the stretcher, the difficult track decent was

made at a reasonable pace with SES, Ambos and other climbers assisting and the group arrived back at the car park about 5.00 pm. Both James and Kerryn were most appreciative of the help given by the emergency services teams and the other climbers. Kerryn stated that the assistance offered by all was true “Aussie mateship”. Many thanks to Tim, Louise, Dave, Robert S, Robert B and Ross Storm season is approaching fast and the SES will be responding to many calls. Householders can reduce these calls and ensure the safety of their properties by carrying out routine tasks such as cleaning gutters and drains, removing rubbish and overhanging branches etc. The emergency telephone number for assistance is 132 500.

State news Pensioners lose rebate when concession cards expire Some pensioners have been dealt another blow after Energy Ombudsman Queensland (EOQ) investigations discovered energy rebates were cut once concession cards expired. Energy Ombudsman Barry Adams said energy retailers, not pensioners, must validate eligibility for concessions if a pensioner card has expired. “I’m disappointed that pensioners have been left out of pocket because energy retailers have not done their job,” Mr Adams said. “Under the Electricity Rebate Agreement, energy retailers are required to validate pensioner concession eligibility with the Department of Communities, Centrelink and Department of Veteran Affairs. “EOQ has had several complaints where this did not occur and pensioners missed out on their energy rebate. “Investigation by EOQ resulted in affected customers receiving new bills with the rebate applied and a compensation payment. “I understand the billing problems impacting pensioner rebates have now been fixed.” The Queensland Government provides a number of energy concessions for pensioners – electricity

If not urgent, think Policelink

Queenslanders needing to report non-urgent policing matters can now access a new and dedicated service, Policelink on 131 444. Police Minister Neil Roberts said the new service would allow for a better direction of police resources across the state. "The Queensland Police Service receives approximately 450,000 Triple Zero calls a year, but only around four per cent of these relate to a time critical or life threatening incident," Mr Roberts said. "The network of Triple Zero call centres across the state need to be able to focus on critical and life threatening incidents - that is why the Bligh Government has invested $54 million to establish Policelink. "Policelink is not about replacing the current methods of contacting Queensland Police, and I still encourage people to call 000 in an

and gas rebates, Electricity Life Support Concession Scheme and the Medical Cooling and Heating Concession. Mr Adams said pensioners eligible for an electricity rebate did not pay the Community Ambulance Cover (CAC) levy. “I strongly urge pensioners to check their energy bills to make sure rebates are being applied and that they are not charged the CAC levy,” he said. “While the onus is on retailers, I would suggest pensioners contact their energy retailer if they receive a new pension card so the rebate continues. “If people think they should receive a rebate, or have previously and it hasn’t been applied to their account recently, they should contact their energy retailer first. “Of course people can contact EOQ for assistance if they are not satisfied with the response from their energy retailer.” Queensland energy consumers can contact Energy Ombudsman Queensland on 1800 662 837, email complaints@eoq.com.au or at www.eoq. com.au

emergency. It is another way to contact police when non-urgent assistance is required. "If the crime is not happening now or is not life threatening I urge the community to call Policelink on 131 444." Mr Roberts said it was estimated the Policelink contact centre will handle more than two million calls per year and free up 260,000 police hours equivalent to over 130 full time officers. Policelink will align with the national 131 444 (131 triple four) number for non-urgent police assistance and will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Policelink will receive calls from the community and Queensland Police Service members incorporating functions previously undertaken by the Police Headquarters Switchroom and Police Assistance Centre, along with the call taking function of the QPS Crime Stoppers Unit. Election victory

Parliamentary News

I’m humbled and honoured that Fisher residents have chosen me to be their Federal Member for another term. It was a challenging and gruelling election campaign but the hard work is definitely worth it. I look forward to honouring the four key pledges I made in the lead-up to Saturday’s poll. I will keep vigorously pushing the Federal and State Governments for more infrastructure to cope with the Sunshine Coast’s growing population. I will continue my determined fight to improve our health services. I will support and foster employment opportunities here. I will promote projects that keep the Sunshine Coast a great place to live. Besides being a strong voice in Canberra, I am also committed to being immersed in the local community. I lend my support to as many not-forprofit and charity events as possible. They are valuable opportunities to meet constituents and learn about local issues. Residents can also contact my electorate office if they need help or advice on issues such as immigration, child support and pensions. This one-onone support is an especially rewarding part of my job.

Dalai Lama returns

The Sunshine Coast will welcome back a very important person next year. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has accepted an invitation to return to the Sunshine Coast. The Tibetan leader will visit the Chenrezig Institute at Eudlo on June 16. He is expected to confer the official opening of its new Gompa, bless the memorial gardens and stupa, and give a short teaching. The Institute will announce more details as they are finalised. I extended the invitation, on behalf of the Institute, when I met with the Dalai Lama in India last year. I was part of the first-ever Australian Parliamentary delegation to visit His Holiness at his home in Dharamsala.

Wear Red for Daniel

I will soon contact all of Australia’s new Federal Members and it’s all for a good cause. I will ask them to show their support for this year’s Day for Daniel by wearing red in Parliament on October 29. Before the Federal Election, several parliamentarians had agreed to be a part of the event. I’m now determined to get the rest involved. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation holds the annual Day for Daniel in tribute to the Sunshine Coast teenager who’s been missing since December, 2003. The Day raises money for and awareness about child safety. You can get more information at danielmorcombe.com.au and dayfordaniel.com.au

FREE Entry & Parking

As is to be expected in the weeks before a federal election, Parliament was a little fiery this past week. No more so when we sought to disallow yet another increase to vehicle registration and drivers licence fees. Whilst only a CPI increase, on the back of the 17 - 22 per cent increase (depending on your vehicle type) last year, it’s another slap in the face for Queensland motorists and Queensland families struggling with cost of living increases in fuel, water and electricity. In recognition of this, if elected, an LNP government has committed to freezing registration costs for cars, boats and light trucks for the duration of its first term. And an LNP government will also, on restoring the state’s AAA credit rating, restore the fuel subsidy. I believe such policy announcements offer Queenslanders a real choice when it comes time for the state election.

Speed limit reduction

Over the next few weeks you will notice the speed limit on the Steve Irwin way on either side of the Matilda service station at Glass house will be reduced to 80km/h. This is the result of a continued campaign to improve safety conditions at this notoriously dangerous intersection. As a regular user of this road I am fully supportive of the communities’ desires for further safety precautions on this stretch. I will therefore continue to lobby Main Roads for upgrades and safety improvements for the length of Steve Irwin Way south of the Glass House Mountains Township.

No small fires without permit

There are many dedicated campers within our community and as the night time temps start climbing again I have no doubt camping families across Queensland will be planning their next weekend getaway. But campers beware - as part of bushfire season preparations, from midnight August 29, 2010 to midnight January 2, 2011 the government will be declaring a Fire Danger Period. This means small fires can only be lit with a permit. Previously, fires smaller than two metres did not require a permit, this has now changed. Permits can be obtained from your local Fire Warden. The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service have announced a Fire Danger Period instead of implementing total fire bans across the state. For more information please visit www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au

Are you passionate about history?

I recently completed my first heritage tour of the region – the first of many I plan to undertake as part of my new role as chair of council’s Cultural Heritage Reference Group. This group is charged with deciding how the $800,000 generated by the new Heritage Levy will be spent across the Sunshine Coast. If you would like to be involved in heritage decisions, I encourage you to submit an expression of interest for a place in this group. Group members will provide expert advice to council to help identify priorities for the allocation of the Heritage Levy funds. I believe involvement in this group will be very rewarding, as members will have a voice in preserving and celebrating some of cultural heritage icons of our region, from Bankfoot House in Glass House Mountains to the many great museums across the Coast. I had a chance to see some of these on my recent tour of the region, when I visited museums and historical societies from Buderim to Cooroy. As well as seeing all the great work being done, I also gained some insight into the challenges facing this sector – the main concerns being lack of storage space for the collections and the need for more volunteers. If you are as passionate as I am about our history and would like to get involved, contact council’s Cultural Heritage Curator Olivia Robinson on 5472 0222 or by email on Olivia.Robinson@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au These important voluntary positions are for 12 months. Applications for membership close on Monday 30 August 2010. Experience in the heritage sector, business, tourism or marketing would be well regarded.

Trees to be removed

Energex will soon be removing a Blackbutt tree at 78 Sahara Road, Glass House Mountains, a Bloodwood tree at 224 Johnston Road, Glass House Mountains, and a Bloodwood tree at the Glass House Mountains Sports Ground. These trees have been identified as being within the clearance zone of powerlines, and although these trees have previously been trimmed back, they now also have structurally unsound regrowth.

Reminder: Landsborough meet ‘n’ greet

I’d like to extend an invitation to the Landsborough community to join me outside the Eclectic Dreams shop, Maleny Street, Landsborough from 10.00am – 12.00noon on Tuesday, September 28. All are welcome to drop by to discuss any ideas or suggestions you may have for the area. Please call Sue on 5441 8043 if you’re able to make it. I look forward to sharing a great morning with you all.

Pending signage policy

Council is in the process of developing one central policy regarding public signage for the Sunshine Coast region – prior to amalgamation there were three separate local laws in place. In particular, I’ve been approached by several community organisations and individuals to get rid of election signage completely. This type of signage can be seen as visual pollution - potentially being vandalised; and environmentally unsound - falling into water drains etc Council will be calling for community consultation in the near future on this upcoming signage policy.

Free technology program

The State Library of Queensland together with Sunshine Coast Libraries is currently running a free program to get locals up to speed with online technologies. The online computer course – Looking @ 2.0 – is designed to help participants navigate their way through Web 2.0 technologies, including: Facebook, MySpace and Skype; creating a virtual library and online to-do list; Podcasts, vodcasts and mash-ups; blogging, and sharing photos on Flickr. The State Library of Queensland is teaching the eight module course over four months, while local libraries are providing free support sessions to complement the program. To find out more and register, go to the State Library of Queensland website www.slq.qld.gov.au/learning For available support session times, visit Sunshine Coast Libraries website www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

What measure will you take to reduce your waist? One of the simplest ways to improve your health and avoid developing chronic disease is to keep tabs on your waist measurement, according to Queensland Health sources. “An easy way to measure your chronic disease risk is to measure your waist circumference.” “If your waist measurement is more than 94 centimetres for men or 80 centimetres for women, then you have an increased risk of developing a chronic disease.” Kerry Roach, Program Co-ordinator (Healthy Lifestyles) coordinates the local ‘Lighten Up’ program, which is a group-based education program, aimed at motivating people towards better eating, exercise and relaxation habits. The ‘Lighten Up’ program does not provide a ‘diet’ to follow but helps people learn to choose and enjoy healthy food, discover enjoyable ways to be physically active, set realistic goals and reach personal targets, cope with stress and develop relaxation techniques, feel better about yourself, and develop a support network to help sustain healthy behaviour changes.

Full Moon on the Spring Equinox The New Moon falls in Virgo on Wednesday, September 8, inviting us to be grounded, focusing on the practical day-to-day tasks of life, and paying attention to detail without losing sight of our overall vision. The New Moon is exact at 8.29pm - the 24-hour period immediately following is a powerful time for manifestation, so put out your intentions! Mercury is still retrograde at the start of September, so be careful with all your communications, written and spoken, and double-check everything, especially messages, addresses and phone numbers. Mercury goes direct again on Monday, September 13. The Equinox falls on Thursday, September 23. This is the time of year when day and night are of equal length and the seasons come to a point of balance. This is a time to explore what might be out of balance in your own life and find a way to restore that balance, whether it’s in your relationships, your family life, your work or any other aspect of your life.

This Full Moon in Aries highlights your ability to be assertive in your life, standing in your power as a warrior of one kind or another, and brings to fruition any project where you have been pioneering, creating something very new. Check your birth chart to see which house is under the spotlight at zero degrees Aries. This Full Moon is exact at 7.17pm AEST. The lovers Venus and Mars can be seen together in the evening sky this month – look to the west just after sunset, where you will see Venus twinkling brightly, with Mars slightly lower in the sky, recognisable by its reddish colour. Venus and Mars are still in diplomatic Libra at the start of the month, where Venus has the upper hand, but by mid-September both have moved into intense and passionate Scorpio, where Mars has the ultimate say in what goes. With Venus and Mars united here, expect passion in your relationships! copyright © 2010 Chirone Witsen All rights reserved Chirone is a counselling astrologer based at Mt Mellum near Landsborough. Out & about in Glasshouse country Grandparents Day

Mothers and fathers have one (which is coming up in the next couple of weeks), and now it seems grandparents across Queensland will be honoured with their very own special day. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh announced recently that the

state would hold its very first Grandparents Day on November 7. We decided to ask local residents who are also grandparents what they thought of the new Grandparents Day, and if they had any advice for parents today.

Larraine Liddicoat, Glass House Mountains “I think it’s a great idea. A wonderful idea, yes.” Her advice to parents: “I think parents should accept their responsibilities. Parents should be strong enough to say ‘no’ sometimes. It’s too easy sometimes to just say ‘yes’ to get them out of your hair.” Bill Spackman, Landsborough “Sounds great. Great idea. I’d like to spend the day with the kids and grandkids and go to lunch or the beach. My parenting tip would be, be patient. Look after their interests.”

Christine Ryan, Glass House Mountains “I think it’s nice that they’re going to do it. On the day I’d like to spend time with my grandchildren.” Her advice to parents: “I’d say they need to throw away the parenting books and listen to themselves - trust their instincts.”

Dell Orreal, Beerwah “I think it’s wonderful, there should be more of it. On the day I would just like being around the family – family connections.” Her advice to parents: “Be parents, don’t be robots. Parents aren’t game to parent anymore, they’re frightened of what somebody else might say, or governments rules. Be parents first, friends second.”

Elvie Pryce, Beerwah “It sounds like a great idea. For parenting advice I’d say just be kind and loving to them, that’s the main thing I think.”

Stan Siddans, Beerwah “I guess some of them should be recognised for what they’ve done. A lot are raring their grandchildren. On the day I’d like to get together with them (my grandkids). To go for a drive somewhere would be nice, because I can’t drive anymore.” His parenting advice: “Just be willing to take a little advice from their parents and not so much about what they read about. For the little ones say, ‘No, don’t do that’. They’re easy trained.”

Things 2 do Buderim Garden Festival Spring into Buderim for a festival of flowers. September 11-12, 9.00am 4.00pm daily at the Buderim War Memorial Hall, corner King and Church Street, Buderim. Lots to see and do. $10.00 entry to six open gardens and spring flower show or $2.00 entry to flower show only. For more information visit www.buderim.com/gardenfestival or phone 5476 8137.

Strawbfest - berry fun for everyone! The strawberries are ripe and ready for the picking and we all know what that means – it’s Strawbfest time! This year Strawbfest comes alive (a little earlier than usual) on Friday, September 3 at Chevallum State School from 5.00pm until late. There’ll be fun and festivity for all the family when the school grounds are transformed into a colourful carnival with live entertainment, amusement rides, sideshow alley, market stalls, international food and strawberry themed goodies. A massive pre-loved clothing and book stall will keep the bargain hunters occupied while foodies will revel in the multicultural cuisine. Fresh flowers and plants aplenty will keep the homemaker happy and the live music, raffles and licensed bar will take care of those looking to let their hair down. But what Strawbfest is really all about is the kids, and we haven’t forgotten them; performing clowns, sideshow games, novelties, showbags, amusement rides and face painting is sure to keep them smiling. Everyone will be going home happy when Strawbfest comes to an explosive end after the spectacular fireworks display at 9.00pm.

Eudlo Hall ‘Spring Up’ market Bookings are already starting to flow in for the upcoming ‘Spring Up’ Market at the Eudlo Hall on Sunday, September 12 from 7.00am - 12.00noon. You really must book now for your chance to participate. For the first time our hall will be offering tea, coffee and cake during the morning. A much-missed stall holder will be returning with her tasty sauces and spreads and with some new additions to her table. Home-made by Niki now has some well deserved accolades to boast about from the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show. The very yummy passionfruit butter was awarded a first place, as was the scrumptious, deadly, plus dairy free chocolate cake. Come and get yours early! New stallholders welcome. For more information contact Annie 5445 0599 or 0402 334 199.

GCNews welcomes contributions from not-for-profit community groups and other local organisations. Please note the editorial deadline is 12.00noon each Friday. If you have missed the deadline your contribution will not be considered for the next edition. For contributions that do meet the deadline, every effort will be made to include them in the next edition, however if we receive more contributions than we have space available,

Some of you may have remembered in my earlier articles, the mentioning of our faithful Golden retriever ‘Ella’. Well this week, after an extensive (and expensive) journey with the vet specialist, we had to put her to sleep. A fungal infection in her nose had spread toward her brain, with little hope of survival. Many of us would have had the difficult times in the family with the loss of a pet, and particularly when there are children concerned, the conversation about death can be quite challenging. In the Bible, there aren’t any clear passages that tell us that our beloved pets will be with us in heaven but after a long investigation and lots of scriptural research I have learned that all dogs go to heaven (just like the cartoon says). Unfortunately, as there shall be no form of pride or selfishness inside the pearly gates, cats will not be permitted to enter! (Just joking you cat lovers). On a more serious note, statistics show that 100 per cent of us will pass away. As the dreaded cancer threatens people from all walks of life at all ages, and we keep wiping ourselves out on the roads, death is never too far from our minds. The question is whether or not we live our lives in fear of it. I was speaking with a lady only yesterday who is really struggling with the idea of leaving this earth,

particularly as her age increases and her health decreases. It was for this reason that Jesus Christ came to earth. Each Easter we celebrate the fact that he died but passed through the other side of death and returned alive to show us that he really is who he said he is and that he has authority over death. By trusting in him for our salvation we too can have a victory over death, live a life free from fear but full of hope that we will one day be in that place that he is now preparing for us. The Apostle Paul shares to the Corinthian church that through Christ, “Death has been swallowed up in victory! Where O death is your victory? Where O death is your sting?” (1 Cor 15:54) I trust that when you find yourself pondering these deep issues of life, or perhaps while you are mourning the loss of someone you love, you will look to Jesus for the victory he is freely offering each of us. With Christ in your life, we can experience the truth that his “perfect love casts out all fear.” It is not God’s will that anyone should perish. Here is a quote to think about. “God pours life into death and death into life without a drop being spilled!” (Author unkown) Why not find yourself in one of our local churches this week to learn more about our awesome God?

Talkin Trades

A to Z of trades and services Five minutes with Rob Martin from Rob Martin Solar What type of services do you offer?

As well as your standard solar hot water installation, I also service and clean solar panels, as well as offer a changeover service.

How long have you been operating your business?

What have your business highlights been?

We have been involved in the solar hot water industry for over 10 years.

Why should readers give you a call?

By removing the algae and grime build up on solar panels, owners can obtain optimum solar gain of up to 30 per cent, and more in some cases. And of course, if your hot water system is failing, solar is definitely one of the best options

It’s always rewarding when you run into a customer and they comment on how well their solar system is working, and the money that they have saved. Of course, the improvements that have been made to the system over the years are exceptional, solar is definitely the way to go.

Give Rob from Rob Martin Solar a call on 5494 8571 or mobile 0416 223 272, or Elise on 0411 759 240.

GET YOUR FINANCIAL HOUSE IN ORDER

With lenders tightening their lending policies and far greater expectations now being placed on borrowers, now is the time to get your financial house in order.

According to Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser, Teresa Harrison, in the face of the current economic climate it is essential for home buyers and property investors to get a clear understanding of the expectations now being placed upon them. “The policies of all lenders have changed considerably in recent months as they look to minimise the risk to their business with an increasing focus on borrowers that represent a ‘good risk’,” Teresa said.

“The tightening in liquidity across global financial markets means there are less funds available for lenders to access in order to on-lend to home loan borrowers. Accordingly, the market has responded by tightening lending criteria.”

“Banks were being more selective about the level of risk to which they’ll expose themselves. They’re looking for good risks, people with genuine savings who can demonstrate discipline with budgets and debt repayment. Seemingly minor things like having a transaction account with certain lenders may add weight to your loan application with that lender,” she said.

“In the current environment your mortgage adviser needs to be up-to-speed with lenders’ everchanging policies – not only where to find the best deals but which lender will accommodate your unique personal circumstances. Never before has it been so important to obtain advice.” “We find that being disorganised is one of the biggest constraints to having a loan application approved promptly or by the finance due date,” she said. “That’s hardly surprising, given that we are all so time-poor these days. However, if a lender needs more information during the loan application process, it is important to respond to this immediately, otherwise the

momentum can be lost and it does take time to get it back on track. This is especially the case when refinancing or topping up a loan.” On average, more than 40 per cent of home loans in Australia are now arranged through a mortgage adviser, and with some lenders it’s more than 60 per cent of their loans. “These changes certainly don’t mean that securing the right loan for your needs is an insurmountable task, but it is certainly a lot more challenging and time-consuming to wade through the policies, loan types, rates and lenders on offer. “At these times, the advice and guidance of an experienced mortgage adviser can be invaluable.”

Down & dirty with Brownie brownie@gcnews.com.au Jobs for the yard in September

• Soil temperatures need to be around 20° C to germinate seeds of warm season vegetables. To check, see if pumpkin seeds are germinating by themselves from old compost, if so, then the soil is warm enough. • Grow any herbs now – except for basil (it’s too early) and coriander (it’s too late). • Take poinsettia cuttings to strike and give away as Christmas presents. • Mulch your gardens to keep in the soil moisture – September is usually a dry month. • Dig up and divide canna lilies. Water them in well with a seaweed solution. • Throw some gypsum over your lawn to open up the soil, allowing the water to penetrate deeper. • Spray your flowering mangoes with Mancozeb or a copper-based fungicide to prevent the disease anthracnose. • Watch out for weeds – they will germinate and grow quicker now it is starting to warm up again. Vegetables Plant carrot, choko, zucchini, sweet potato, cucumber, eggplant, beans, lettuce, radish, squash, tomato, beetroot, capsicum, pumpkin, rockmelon, rosella, silver beet, sweet corn, and watermelon. Flowers Plant alyssum, bedding begonia, cosmos, marigold, salvia, petunia, amaranthus, phlox, portulaca, sunflower, zinnia, calendula, californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, dahlia, verbena, gerbera, kangaroo paw and snapdragon.

Handy HomeHints Hints Over the past few years I have come to realise that with our busy lifestyles there are too many things to do in our lives. Many of our home maintenance duties have been neglected or missed. In other cases some people are unaware of a problem raising its head. The old adage of a stitch in time comes to mind. So every month I’ll be sharing some helpful hints I’ve learnt over time, which will hopefully help you avoid costly repair and maintenance bills in the long run. This month I’m going to look at shower recesses. Often we clean our shower recess and don't take a closer look. Here's what to look for. Grout is a very important part of your shower. Grout stops the water from flowing down behind the tiles. You may think it's such a small hole, but as the water flows over the surface of the tiles, it literally gets sucked into this little hole. Once behind the tiling, water starts soaking into the wallboard and timber framing behind (often waterproofing only occurs in corners and at the bottom of the wall panelling). The water then drops to the bottom of the wall where, in minor cases, it causes mildew in the next room. However, if left too long, this water leakage will cause rotting of carpets, wall board, timber framing and minor collapse resulting in a visit from your maintenance man. So always keep your shower recess well grouted. Hope this doesn’t get too many fellows intro trouble.

New rules for Councillors’ discretionary funds Local Government Minister Desley Boyle has outlined new transparent provisions that apply to Councillors’ use of discretionary funding. “Over the years there have been complaints about Councillors who have appeared to have had discretionary funds as it were in their back pocket,” Ms Boyle said. “It seemed they could go to community functions and make on-the-spot decisions to hand over cheques for thousands of dollars. It seemed to some other community groups that this was unfair as Councillors through their discretionary funds were able to favour some groups over others. “There were also concerns that discretionary funds were not properly and transparently accounted for. “The Auditor-General reported on this matter two years ago and, consequently, a new framework for Councillors’ use of discretionary funds was included under section 109 of the new Local Government Act 2009 and the Local Government (Finance, Plans and Reporting) Regulation 2010 and brought in new standards of integrity for Mayoral and Councillor discretionary funds.” Key elements of the new standards are: The Council must let the public know the amount of money in the local government’s discretionary funds budgeted for use by each Councillor for a financial year by – • Publishing, within 20 business days after the adoption of the budget, notice of the amount in a newspaper circulating generally in the local government area; and • Displaying the notice in a conspicuous place in the local government’s public office. The notice must – • Invite community organisations to apply for allocation of some of these funds and it must state how they should apply.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by Trevor Bertram

It is encouraging to see player numbers building up on Wednesday mornings with both pairs and three bowl triples being played. Last week, Barry Richardson and Monika Duff won the pairs and Bruno De Clara, Marleen Bertram and Di Hunt won the triples. More players, both men and ladies, are welcome for a social morning of bowls. Margaret Lehmann defeated Kate White in the first round of the Ladies’ B Grade Singles Championship. On Wednesday afternoon we had the students from Glasshouse Country Christian College visit for the third week of their sports program. They are showing some real ability and enthusiasm for the game and it is great to see some young bowlers on the green. Thursday’s Open Pairs winners were Ernie Sherwood and Robbie Dean with 2 wins and a score of 46 points, with the runners-up being Clive Sinton and Barry Richardson with a highest score of 25 in the first game. In the Pennant Championship, Round 4 was played on Saturday with Division 2 defeating Caboolture Lakes 63 to 56, Division 4 defeating Bribie Island 47 to 39 and Division 5 going down by one shot at

Donnybrook 39 to 40. In Round 5 next Saturday, August 28, Div 2 plays Solander Lake (away), Div 4 plays Caboolture Lakes (at home) and Div 5 plays Bribie Island (away). 2011 BMX State Championship bid by Local BMX Club Contributed by Marnie Van Diepen

The Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club, located on Connection Road, Mooloolah, has applied for the 2011 State BMX Championships and is now on the shortlist against the Bundaberg BMX Club. There has been great support in our bid for the titles, from riders such as the current Number one QLD Champion, Joel Clarke, who regularly trains at the Hinterland track. It is quite possible there is only one thing that is holding the club back from being announced as the host club and that is the unfinished upgrade to the start hill which the club has so far been unsuccessful in obtaining a grant for. The QLD State Championship is the biggest in Australia attracting 1,200 riders plus their families from all over QLD with many riders staying on average seven days. This is a huge benefit not only for the host club but also the community with statistics showing this event can bring four million dollars into the local community. Elite BMX riders from all over Australia will also be in attendance as the State Championships include the first round of the UCI run Pro Bike Championships which is part of the selection process for the 2012 Olympic Team. Last year, a decision was made by the club to upgrade the start hill for the safety of their riders since numerous attempts to patch the old sinking start hill were continually failing. All dirt for the newly upgraded start hill is in place but earthworks and concreting is still required, which the club estimates will cost around $30,000. Previous attempts to obtain grants have so far proved unsuccessful so to assist the club in finishing this project Hinterland BMX is seeking sponsorship from any community minded businesses that may be able to assist in any way to help finish the start hill off.

Hinterland BMX Club is extremely supportive of the Sunshine Coast community and welcomes the public to utilise their track for fun and fitness outside of club hours and as a result pours much of the club funds plus many volunteer hours each week into maintaining the track not only for its members but the general public who enjoy using this fantastic facility especially on the weekend and school holidays. If you are able to help, please contact the club President Kim Neuendorf on 0409 844 969.

Beerwah Bulldogs August 21 Report The Bulldogs Home and Away season came to end at Maroochydore with a couple of heavy defeats inflicted by them by the Swans. The Under 18’s may have had their minds on this weekend’s Semi Final as the Maroochydore team raced in nine tries in a comprehensive victory. The Reserve Grade team who had defeated the Swans in the first two encounters this season could not match them this time around and lost 70 -16 against a Maroochydore side who played quite a few A-Graders due to large injury toll to their Reserve Grade Side. The Under 18’s begin their semi final assault against old rivals the Caloundra Sharks this weekend and would like to see the Bulldog army come along and offer support. St Paul’s is a Prep to Year 6 Primary School of Game day and time will be posted on the Website when available http://beerwahbulldogs.leaguenet.
