Hi everyone
Well for those of you who know any of this year’s debutantes you will be pleased to see that this edition has two full pages of photos. I know that many readers have been keenly waiting to see them, in particular the reader who actually wrote an email of complaint – it always makes me smile when people jump to conclusions instead of just asking a question to find out what has happened. So I thought we would explain what had caused the delay - our Debutante photographer, who has done a great job over the past few years, was once again booked and on board to take the photos. While she assured as that even though she was close to the end of her pregnancy - all would be well and she would be able to work on the night. However as life goes her new baby decided to make their entrance into
the world much earlier than planned – and in turn threw a spanner into our plans. Fortunately for us, the wonderful Steve Field from Portrait Patch who was the official photographer on the night agreed to supply the photos for us to use, however he was not able to supply them until just after last week’s deadline. So we hope you enjoy seeing all our glamorous young people looking so stylish in their debutante gear. Thanks to Steve for allowing us to share these photos with the rest of the community and congratulations to Sarina - hope all is going well with you and your new bub.
Regards,

The ongoing delay in opening the multimillion dollar dual carriageway along a three kilometre section of Steve Irwin Way has left one local business frustrated and perplexed by a government department’s apparent apathy. BP Mooloolah manager David Watts said he has heard nothing from either the contractor or the Department of Main Roads as to when roadworks on the multimillion dollar project would be completed, despite signage indicating its completion by mid 2010. Mr Watts said that every week for the past month, he had been told by employees of the contractors that both lanes of the new road would be open “in another week.” When GCNews asked the Department of Main Roads when the road would be completed, and why there has been a delay, we were given a similar response, with a timeframe within “the next two months”, and no explanation as to the ongoing delay. Earlier this year, Mr Watts and neighbouring business proprietor Simon Smith of Go Green Rainforest Nursery expressed their frustration and disappointment at the lengthy delays to install a u-turn facility out the front of their businesses, which resulted in a significant downturn in business. Mr Watts said business has never recovered, and he believes the whole project has been poorly managed.

Steve Irwin Way “We were never told from the outset that the u-turn facility would be disabled for such a long period, and now, we are still being kept in the dark in terms of a final completion date, and the reason behind the delays,” Mr Watts said. Simon Smith from Go Green said he sympathised with Mr Watts situation, commenting that he’d obviously been suffering from the impact of the roadworks on passing trade. “It seems they’ve lost a lot of the transport and trucking trade that just doesn’t stop now,” Simon said. Simon also said he hadn’t been able to get a response from Main Roads in relation to when the second lane of traffic will be opened. “In the original timeline for the project, the two lanes were supposed to be opened about two or three months ago. “What’s happened to their (Main Roads) timeframes, and why are they running so far cont. on page 7 behind?”

Final farewell for John Ledwidge By Lea Parkes
Last Friday a farewell service was held for young Beerwah lad John Ledwidge, where hundreds of family, friends and workmates came together to celebrate John’s life and remember what a special individual he was. While John’s tragic death was devastating for his family and friends, his proud and determined mum, Kym put one very definite specification on the service; she wanted the occasion to focus on John ‘s love of living life on the edge, his adventurous spirit, generous nature and his passion for the things that were important to him. When John was only one-year-old the family moved from Katherine in the Northern Territory to make their home in Glass House Mountains near Kym’s mum and dad Daphne and Clive Lyons, and he soon became the apple of their eye. Four and a half years later the family expanded to include a younger brother Alex who adored his big brother. John went to Kindy at Beerwah, Primary School at Glass House Mountains and High School at Beerwah and while at Beerwah High he completed a School Based Traineeship with Bell Stainless at Kunda Park.
When an apprenticeship became available they offered it to John and he left school early to become a sheetmetal worker. John loved his work and he soon became an important part of the Bell Stainless team. That’s not to say that everything ran smoothly when John was around. The boys recalled the first time John was given the job of welding a sink into a stainless steel benchtop. “He did the welding and was so proud of the way it looked. Then came the polishing process. Once he’d sanded the weld he realised he should have used more heat ‘cause the weld cracked and the sink fell out, so he had to start the whole process over again.” “Or when we’d repaired the side panels on the workshop truck. All brand new and only just come back from the powder coaters, John was the first person to drive it.” “All he had to do was take it out of the shed and park it, but he must not have seen the ute parked off to one side. He hooked the new side gate on the back of the ute and put a big gouge from front to back. All the boys thought it was hilarious except John.” “Then one day he was navigating in the truck for one of the other boys in Brisbane. They missed
the turnoff to the inner city bypass and in the confusion tried to fit in between a couple of Council buses at an intersection. They ended up BEERWAH RSL smashing the back corner off a bus with the tray of the truck. Naturally (CLUB LOGO) they both blamed each other.” “And finally, the day we had a st FRIDAY phone call from a real estate agent 1 October wanting a personal reference for the BINGO – 10AM JACKPOT $87555 calls purpose of John’s rentalNew agreement. players welcome Larry was in the middle of giving a glowing report on John’s dependable st ENTERTAINMENT and stable character when he heard FRIDAY 1 October a noise and looked out the window, Rum & Roses only to see dirt and smoke flying in all directions as John sprayed one of the other boy’s 4WD with a layerDining of Lunches everyday 12 – 2pm mud and took off up the road. Big win for Glass House Mountains Taxi Service by Rosemary Hayes
Stephen and Sharon Lee from Glasshouse Mountains Taxi Service have won the 2010 Qld Country Taxi Operator of the Year Award. After only operating the business for a little over a year, they managed to beat Warwick Taxi Company who had won the previous two years. What made the win even more satisfying is that they didn’t even know they had been nominated for the award. “We weren’t even aware of these awards until we got the phone call to say that we won it. We first thought it was a joke,” Sharon said. “It’s a feather in the hat, we must be doing something right,” Stephen said. “It’s a one taxi area, it is very hard to keep everyone happy all the time but we do the best we can. We’d like to say thank you very much to the community for your help. And thanks to our other drivers Michael Lettres and Garry Taylor.” Having worked in the taxi industry on the coast for about five years, Stephen and Sharon put their win down to offering a 24 hour, seven day a week service, as well as ensuring strong communication with customers. “Steve’s born in Esk and we were in Lowood for 10 years so we know what it’s like to be in a small community, everyone saying hello and looking out for each other. Informing the customers where we’re going to be and how long we’re going to be, that’s made a big improvement,” Sharon said.
Michael, Stephen and Sharon Besides the normal on demand service, they also offer FlexiLink, Veterans Affairs transport services and school runs. They also hope more seniors will take advantage of the Council Cabs program, where people over 60 can get transport for only $2.00 each way on a Tuesday morning. Sharon said they are also looking at getting a standby vehicle to be used between Monday and Fridays on peak demand times. Their current taxi and the standby taxi are both wheelchair friendly. Considering they carry a wide range of customers from children to the elderly what do they think is the best part of the job? Sharon said, “for me, because I do a lot of the day shifts it’s picking up people and knowing them by name, and having a chat. It’s not always ‘how’s the weather’, you can ask how their children are, or husband. We have good laugh with them.” Stephen has his own reasons. “I get to take a lot of ladies home,” he jokes. For taxi services in the local area, you can contact Stephen and Sharon on 131 008 or 0413 948 076.

Glasshouse well represented on new cultural heritage group Three local residents have been selected to form part of a new coast wide cultural heritage reference group which will influence how funds raised through the new heritage levy will be spent.
Well known local historians Helen Page, Ann Ross and Wendy Dixon form part of the 13 member Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group announced last week, which will provide strategic advice on how the $720,000 generated by the new Heritage Levy will be spent across the Coast. Sunshine Coast Council’s Cultural and Heritage Portfolio councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the group’s focus will be on raising the profile of cultural heritage throughout the region and supporting the development of a regional network of individuals, organisations and museums in the heritage sector.
Members selected for the group include representatives of council, historical societies, cultural and heritage groups and associations, business, tourism and the community. Cr Grosskreutz said the diversity of skills and experience of those nominated made the selection process of the reference group extremely challenging. “Congratulations to the members of the Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group and thank you to everyone who nominated. Deciding the members from the extensive number of quality nominations was a difficult task,” she said. Reference group members will hold their voluntary positions for 12 months, after which time they will be able to re-apply for the position.

cont. from page 3 A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said despite heavy rainfall over the course of construction – 131 wet days as of August, stage one was due to be completed in the next two months, weather permitting. “TMR has made every effort to keep the community informed including letters to stakeholders and advertisements in local papers, with the last update via a community newsletter on the department’s website earlier this month,” the spokesperson said. GCNews then spoke to Mark McArdle to see if he could shed any more specific information about the delays and this is what he had to say
I have contacted senior management in the Department of Main Roads in Gympie who tell me there are problems they are working through including concerns from the bad weather we have had. "A senior member of the project team will speak to Mr Watts at the BP and explain the current position in completing the work. I accept that this has been a complicated and lengthy process but it is now getting to a ridiculous point where, despite the weather, this is taking much too long to complete and businesses are being affected. It must be a priority for this upgrade to be finished and opened" Mr McArdle said.

As stressful as exams and assignments can be, the Year 11s and 12s had the wonderful opportunity to complete some of their assessments in our brand new library, set to be open to all students next term. An exciting feature of the new library will be six media rooms including a green room with all the bells and whistles of a video production studio. The library has been an on-going project for most of 2010 and both the staff and students are eager to be able to commence using the new state of the art facilities in Term Four.
Year 10 Careers Expo
On Thursday, September 15, the Year 10 students of Glasshouse Country Christian College created an interesting careers display for Year 10 students of Glasshouse younger Secondary students at Country Christian College the school as part of their work education. The expo was held in the new library and showed what a flexible space it can be. Students gave out information and advice on a variety of occupations and careers. The students were also supported by Sunshine Coast TAFE staff who talked to students about TAFE courses.
Prep Father’s night
Even though it seems like a long time ago already, Fathers Night at Glasshouse Country Christian College Prep was such a fabulous event. On the Tuesday before Fathers Day, the children invited their dads to their classroom for a whole lot of playing, dancing, singing, hammering and eating! The evening started with games and activities and because it was such an important occasion, the making of a special name-tag tie for dad. All were uniquely decorated and quite a fashion statement! When one little girl was asked the day before to tell Dad to bring his ‘dancing shoes’, she said “my dad doesn’t have dancing shoes! My mum does though. They’re red high heels. I’ll tell him to wear those!” Unfortunately he did not wear them. Nevertheless, he managed quite well, as did everyone else to dance the Hokey-Pokey and sing and dance to some other songs. The teachers shared a few of the precious things the children had said about their dads on their ‘Daddy Fact File’. One of the interesting things the teachers found out was that most fathers are aged between six -13, although some are 80ish! The fathers were asked to bring along a hammer and help their children with the beginnings of a craft activity which they unwrapped on Sunday as their Father’s Day present. So despite the evening being a noisy one with lots of hammering and excited children, it was such fun. Fathers’ Night was a really great opportunity for dads to see what their children get up to throughout their day at GCCC Prep. The dads (and one Grandad too) enjoyed catching up with each other as well. All had such a great time!

Travelling Tales
with Richard Thomson of Glass House Mountains Where did you travel to? LA, then on to Canada (Toronto) flying V Australia to LA, then American Airlines to Toronto, with a flight time of 17.5 hours all up. How long did you go for? Three weeks in total. What was the weather like? Summer time 22 degrees, mild nights. What were a few of the highlights of your holiday? Spending time with my brother and his family. Travelling to Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec, also to Niagara Falls. That was an experience of a lifetime. What was the most unusual thing you experienced / came across on your trip? Loved Niagara Falls and Quebec City. On the way back from Quebec we visited a small sheep farm, and I was amazed at sheep being milked for the production of cheese. The name of the town was Victoriaville, just south of Quebec City. Driving on the other side of the road was another experience in itself (most of the time). Canada, with its large lakes and miles of rivers has 10 per cent of the worlds drinking water, we could do with some of the same here. Any other special information you would like to share with us? Niagara Falls, I will always remember the power and the beauty, and also the small hamlet called Niagara on the lake, it takes you back in time.

Quebec City is like time stood still, with its cobble stone streets, old architecture preserved from days gone by, beautiful gardens and history at every turn. Also the Butterfly Hatchery at Niagara Falls, and seeing lots of wildlife, including chipmunks, raccoon, deer, and coyotes. I was amazed to learn and see very large ocean going freight ships enter the St Lawrence River at Quebec City and travelling to Montreal. Ottawa, Toronto and bypass Niagara Falls via a man made canal into large lakes such as Ontario Lakes, Georgian Bay, Lake Erie, Winnpeg, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior and ending at Saskatchewan. The distance is 2,500 miles (all fresh water). In a nutshell the way to describe Canada – beautiful country, irresistible. I’d go back in a heartbeat. The people I met were very warm and friendly and made you feel very welcome. LA Airport? Well that’s a story of its own.
Niagara Falls Send us your tales from a recent trip and go in the draw to win a 2 night cruise aboard the Dawn Princess next year. Bogan boys from the bush doing it for the kids
Brian Clifford and Richard Smith from Glass House Mountains have a lot in common. They both live in Glass House Mountains, they are both self-confessed ‘bogans from the bush’ and they both have that deep-seated Aussie spirit of wanting to help others. That’s why they have joined up to participate in next year’s XXXX Gold ‘Bay Whales to Hay Bales’ Variety Bash, which will leave Hervey Bay on August 20 and end at the Gympie Muster on August 28, 2011. Brian and Richard will undertake the trek in Brian’s ‘True Blue’ vehicle, a one-of-a-kind, hand built 1981 VH Commodore wagon 4x4. And while Brian and Richard are Variety ‘virgins’, True Blue is already a seasoned Basher having participated (with Brian at the wheel) in the Great Endeavour Rally in 2009. The boys have decided to participate in next year’s Bash because of the great work Variety does with sick, disabled and disadvantaged children. “Instead of sitting around on my hands doing nothing, I’ve got the car, it may as well get used and it is fun,” Brian said. “It’s hard work all the fundraising and car preparation and stuff but at the end of it, the trip is actually the reward for 12 months worth of fundraising. It’s great when you see the faces on the kids when they get given a motorised wheelchair.” “Brian approached me and we’re one and the same sort of people, and I’ve always supported these causes,” Richard said. “I thought the same thing, I may as well get out there and help out, and have some fun while we’re doing it. The kids are awestruck with the

Pulling into the different schools and the special schools, that’s going to be the highlight of the whole thing I reckon,” he said. There are many ways you can help Brian and Richard help the kids: with donations of money, goods or services (all money donations are tax deductible), or sponsorship and advertising. True Blue is a vehicle that stands out, have your logo on the car and it will be seen. “Any offers of support whatever form it takes will be much appreciated. We are hoping for local support and will organise events locally to maximise the community spirit of the Glasshouse area,” Brian said. One major event will be a Big Gala at the Beerwah RSL in March, 2011. Richard is lead singer of the band the Retronomes and they will perform a Super Rock and Roll spectacular, so keep an eye out for further details. Winner loses 26kg and bags over $700.00
Mooloolah resident, Marnie Van Diepen, last week became the first Weight Loss Challenge contestant to win back to back challenges, losing 26kg over the two 12 week challenges and taking home cash prizes totalling over $700.00 in the process. The Glasshouse Weight Loss Challenge has now helped 120 local residents to lose hundreds of centimetres and kilograms over the past 15 months, with many, like Marnie, returning to consecutive challenges to continue their weight loss journey.
“Many don’t realise that 80 per cent of weight loss is nutrition and 20 per cent is exercise,” said coordinator Anita Cassidy. “It’s fantastic that the Weight Loss Challenge has been embraced locally, having the support of the people around you really helps to keep people on track,” she said. She said the best thing about the Challenges is the variety of contestants. “We have had men and women in our classes ranging in age from 18 to mid-70s and while most are able to do some form of exercise, we do have others who are less mobile. In fact, the winner of Challenge three and the runner up of Challenge four were both older contestants and were unable to exercise regularly, however they lost 14kg and 12kg respectively simply by

The Caloundra Family History Research group was privileged to present Dr Jon Prangnell, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the School of Social Science, University of Queensland, at the group’s general meeting on September 16. Dr Prangnell, the Director of the University’s Archaeological Services Unit, spoke about his work on the excavation of the old North Brisbane Burial Ground, the original Free Settlement Cemetery (1843 1875) which was on the site where the Suncorp Stadium now stands. His presentation included the chequered history of the cemetery. It remained in place until 1914 when, under council direction, the headstones were removed and it became parkland, known as the Paddington Reserve. As the city grew, in the 1920’s the parkland became the major garbage dump for Brisbane, then in 1940 it ceased to be a dump and the Queensland Amateur Athletics were granted a lease over the eastern side for an athletics track. The cemetery, still beneath these changes, took on another phase in its history, when in 1950 the Queensland Rugby League was granted use of the area and it became Lang Park. Finally, before the construction of today’s Suncorp Stadium, Dr Prangnell and his team conducted excavations, just in areas where the graves beneath would be disturbed by building foundations. To reach the graves, the archaeological team had to excavate through topsoil and 13 metres of garbage. Finally, the remains of 397 persons were removed, all of which were reinterred in a large crypt at Toowong Cemetery. All other graves are still in place beneath the stadium buildings and playing field. During October, the Caloundra Family History Research group will be conducting a Scottish Seminar at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra with eminent historian on Scotland, Ann Swain, from Queensland Family History Society. Mark Saturday, October 16 in your diary. Bookings essential, afternoon tea included with the seminar, the cost for visitors is $10.00. Free attendance for members. Contact Valerie on 5437 3879 until October 12, and June on 5493 2679 from October 13.

Witness to accident
What about the Mooloolah cemetery?
Summer’s almost here – time to make sure your backyard pool fence is safe!
If you’re unsure about your pool fence, contact council to organise an inspection.
Glass House Mountains
To the gentleman who witnessed my silver ute with Still Brewin signage being rear ended out the front of IGA on August 24, could you please contact me on 5439 0043 or AH 5494 0881. Thanks. Wayne, Beerwah
The draft strategy – which outlines a partnership approach towards building a better future for Coast young people – is now online.
It is the property owners responsibility to make sure pool fences comply with safety standards, gate latches lock automatically, and ensure there are no trees, furniture or pot plants near pool fences that kids can climb to get to the pool.
This is the full picture, not the ‘seven blind men went to view an elephant’ blinkered approach. As for the water meter readers, yes, they are still physically read, you can often see these people around the area if you wish to look. Although the latest water meters can be read remotely, so no one will need to leave the office to get an instant and accurate reading 24/7. If any criticism can be leveled at the roll-out of the water businesses, it is only that it was a rushed affair, where the practicalities of the system have not been fully thought through, internal procedures are incomplete and channels of communication almost non-existent. Armed with the above information, please research this topic, and then report your findings back to the community. Peter Webb Hydraulic Services Consultant,
This little fella scared the be geezers out of me the other morning. At first I thought it was a snake, although cute! He was happy to stay there all day, and left in the dark of the night. Pat Morris Landsborough
Jumping on the bandwagon In reply to Mr. B Stallworthy’s questions and comments in last week’s issue of GCNews (September 22) relating to Unity Water: 1 Peter Beatty created the SE Queensland water grid in an effort to drought proof the South Eastern corner of the state. Anna Bligh is only managing a State Government possession, as the state is the ultimate owner of all council infrastructures, (council only deriving its power by devolution from the state government). 2 The existing water infrastructure throughout the state was paid for over many years by various Qld State Governments and local Councils via State and Federal taxation. 3 Unity Water is one of three new water businesses; the other two are Queensland Urban Utilities and Allconnex Water. 4 The State Government set up these water businesses, with council assistance. 5 These three water businesses are not private companies, they have no shareholders and are they are not listed on the stock exchange, they are basically quangos. Julia Gillard is proposing a federal government hand out from the national infrastructure fund. Beware of linking two unrelated items and getting a very distorted view. The water grid is the first stage in managing and preserving our water supplies now and for future population growth.
In December 2000 my wife was enturned in the Mooloolah Cemetery. The local Councilor advised me of my entitlements and also revealed that on receipt of the transfer from the Landsborough Council there would be a map defining the Boundary of the Cemetery (the Landsborough councillors would also be aware of this plan), and also a Government Lease, to solely be used for the development of the Cemetery. The Caloundra City Council engaged a consultatnt to assess The Mooloolah Cemetery, resulting in 1,800 grave sites being found. This was adopted by the Council, but the Local Councilor held a meeting consisting of a staff member and a historian (no other Councilors) and reduced it to 900 graves over 10 years. I was invited to attend an inspection of the Cemetery along with a Councillor, and the Council's consultant pointed out the affected area and commented that the area would be developed. Resulting from this inspection, a car park, and a garden for cremation walls was built and received many accolades, as a larger cemetery was built. The amalgamation of the three councils was announced and to my surprise none of the MPs from the Coast or the Federal MP combined to have the decision declared invalid. The result being that the Kalangar Cemetery remains untouched and the Mooloolah Cemetery is reduced to 500 graves. The CEO intended to review the Council numbers and have more field workers employed outside, but this was not made affected due to internal decisions. Re: the reserve plots. It is known that these sites are (or are supposed to) be recorded by the Council and therefore can be traced, and resolved. The final result is that the Mooloolah Cemetery, the Icon of the Sunshine Coast, has been derated without a full explanation being given for its demise. How much do you value your feet? Imagine if you couldn’t use your feet for one day? What about one year? How would you cope with what you are currently doing now without the help of your feet? You couldn’t walk to the bathroom, drive your car, exercise or just stand up… Feet work overtime every day, but how much thanks do you give them? Feet need a health check every year to help prevent future problems to your ankles, knees and lower back, or diagnose any pain or discomfort you may be feeling. Despite your age, any pain in your feet should be checked because of the load-bearing pressure your feet endure daily. Pain can be due to a build up of callous from uneven walking, fatigued muscles, pulled tendons, stress fractures, genetic bone deformity (bunions), even poor footwear choices. All these conditions can be treated, however if ignored, can become chronic and lead to other problems. If you are a diabetic, athlete or just in pain, a call to the podiatrists at Stepping Out Podiatry should be your next step, where all our podiatrists are tertiary trained foot and ankle specialists. Beerway – Patriotic Day
Dump green waste for free
I have a very large dog which I walk every morning. Our walk takes us through the pine forests at the end of our road where he can run free and enjoy the morning. As we walk through the pines I notice that rubbish is being dumped more often now. Mainly the rubbish is garden waste but other waste is also dumped. It doesn’t take a detective to work out the reasons why. Have you been to the local dump at Beerwah lately? You are charged a fee every time one takes rubbish there, where once your garden waste was free on a weekend. People are struggling to make ends meet; even Anna Bligh is selling Queensland to make ends meet. Why pay to dump when you can go to the pine plantations and other places and drop it off for free? Do I agree to this illegal dumping? Of course not and I would be the first to report a car’s registration number if I saw one dumping rubbish. Do I understand it? Yes. Let people dispose of their green waste without charge, anytime. The tip grinds it up to sell as mulch so the costs are minimal. Triple the fines for illegal dumping as there are no excuses for it anymore. Maybe, just maybe, my dog and I can take our walk amongst the pines, enjoying the smells of mother nature and not the smells of rotting waste. One lives in hope. Paul, Glass House Mountains

Australia Patriotic Day
As a local history group we are frequently given old photographs unearthed by present or former residents of the district. They often arrive with minimal information, so we attempt to find out more background, either from the donor or from the excellent research sources now available. Sometimes the task of interpreting a single photograph can lead to unexpected insights and greater understanding, not only of the local content of the photo, but also of the wider context. Some years ago descendants of an early Peachester family, the Buchanans, gave us several photos which were particularly interesting as they told us more about that family, and also included family friend and local farmer Frank Nicklin, later Premier of Queensland. One of these photos is shown here, and the following information was written on the back: ‘Beerwah School of Arts, Paddy’s Market 28th Aug 1915 – Australia Patriotic Day. From R: Peggy McAnally (married Charles Buchanan), Ina Fleming, Frank Nicklin’. Wondering if this was a local event or, as seemed likely during WW1, part of a larger project, we recently explored the reference to ‘Australia Patriotic Day’, using some easily accessed Internet sites. A Google search revealed that it was a national event; we found numerous photographs on ‘Picture Queensland’ and ‘Picture Australia’, articles from the ‘Brisbane

SEPTEMBER 29 2010
‘On Queensland Day, August 28th, a ‘Paddy’s Market’ in aid of Patriotic funds was held here in the School of Arts. It was very successful and it is expected that about £30 will be realised. A large quantity of lovely produce was collected, and every bit auctioned at excellent prices. Mr C. R. Wilson acted as auctioneer and deserves every praise for the efficient manner in which he carried out his duties. Bidding was brisk throughout, especially for three ducks, which being sold over and over realised £3-1s. During the afternoon a number of raffles and guessing competitions were run off. The proceeds from these considerably increased the funds. Ice cream was in great demand especially among the children. A magnificent display of flowers chiefly donated by Mr Jenner was another feature well worth noting. The Committee have to thank all the contributors to the ‘Market’ for the generous manner in which they came forward with their gifts. At night a largely attended dance helped along the funds considerably.’

Aviation Traineeships
Fruit merger a boost to local economy
Those interested in a career in aviation should consider a two-year Diploma of Electronics and Communications Engineering being offered in conjunction with Airservices. Up to 15 positions in the course will be offered this year, with students to begin their training in early 2011. Airservices advises that applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 (or be in their final year). Successful applicants will have an opportunity to work with cuttingedge equipment and systems as Australia’s key provider of navigation services rolls out a $900-million, five-year equipment expenditure program. For further information on Airservices technical trainee program, visit www. airservicesaustralia.com/careers/trainees.
Award
While on the topic of Airservices, I congratulate the new Sunshine Coast Airport fire station for winning the project management award in the Defence / Aerospace category of the Queensland Australian Institute of Project Management awards recently. This is a wonderful achievement and also a great boost for the airport. More information on the projects entered in the 2010 awards is available at www.airservicesaustralia.com or www. aipm.com.au
Fisher volunteer awards
Those who know a local resident who works hard in a voluntary role for the community are encouraged to nominate them for a Fisher Community Australia Day Award, which will be announced and presented at a special function on Australia Day. Australia Day in 2011 will mark the 11th holding of the awards. If you wish to have a nomination form, collect one from my office at Buddina or phone 5444 4888 and speak to Richard.
Crime prevention tip
With spring now upon us, many of us are dusting off the garden implements like shovels and ladders and returning to the garden to tidy up and beautify our properties. However, failing to store the tools properly in a shed or garage can inadvertently give criminals tools with which to break into our homes. Remember to put tools back safely where they belong to avoid this potential problem.
While today’s economic climate is still teetering between going up, staying flat or taking another rest, it’s great to see one local business forging ahead. I paid a visit to Gowinta Farms at Beerwah recently where extensive renovations are under way to convert the facility into the largest pineapple packing house in Australia. Gowinta has a proud history and it is forging an even better future. The principally strawberry and pineapple farm was established more than 60 years ago and is now the largest strawberry farm on the Sunshine Coast. That in itself is an achievement as 60 years ago the Coast was nowhere near as populated or as popular as it is today. Gowinta has now partnered with Tropical Pineapples to create the huge packing house which will ensure Coast growers a long-term viable solution to packing their fruit before it is sent to the Brisbane markets and beyond. It also will ensure that sustainable pineapple farming will continue across the Coast – an industry which built hinterland townships like Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough. Better yet the new venture will create another 36 full-time jobs for local residents and Golden Circle will continue their demand for our fruit. The partnership could not come at a better time for the industry as it follows hot on the heels of the announcement of a new hybrid pineapple which has the industry buzzing. The hybrid promises a great tasting pineapple all-year-round and is expected to increase sales of the sub-tropical fruit therefore bringing more prosperity to the industry in our region. It’s good news all round both for the pioneering company Gowinta Farms, Tropical Pineapples and the economy of the Sunshine Coast. It’s this sort of foresight and enterprise that is needed both in our own communities and across Australia. Gowinta employs 260 part-time and full-time employees, has 600 acres under cultivation and grows a variety of crops. This is a business success story that doubles as a tourist attraction.

Tree becomes a feature at Skippy Park
Mosquito control
You may have noticed the large, dead tree just inside the entrance to Skippy Park and wondered why? This large White Gum was relocated from another park along the Mooloolah River at Minyama, to Skippy Park after unexpectedly dying. To get the tree ready for its trip to Skippy Park, the root plate of the tree was excavated and the root system and canopy were cut off before it was loaded onto a truck with a crane. The tree also had a native bird box in the canopy - this was relocated locally. This beautiful, big, old tree is now destined to be a landscape feature of the Skippy Park playground surrounds.
Pioneer Park playground
Council has recently completed an upgrade to the playground at Pioneer Park, Landsborough. The upgrade includes the installation of a new rubber surface, which includes a Hop Scotch pattern, and the relocation of the existing drinking fountain to a nearby spot. The added benefit of this fantastic looking rubber matting product is its ability to both the extend life span of the existing surface and to use it in other areas of the playground as they wear out.
Beerwah Library
Although the facilities at the Beerwah library are fabulous, the meeting room is sadly missing some practical necessities - like a sink! Originally earmarked to be included in next year’s budget for council owned buildings, I know the many users of the library meeting room will be pleased to hear that I have decided to bring this project forward and pay for it from Divisional funds. The sink will be installed as soon as possible.
WANTED – New walk organisers for Glasshouse Mountains Do you love walking? Would you like to organise a free Heart Foundation Walk in the Glasshouse Mountains areas? Council, together with the Heart Foundation, provides residents and visitors with the Heart Foundation Walking program. And they are now seeking new volunteer walk organisers for the Glasshouse Mountains area. For further information phone 5475 7272 or visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
Please be advised from Thursday, September 23, Council will be carrying out a rainfall related aerial application program to treat mosquito larvae. Eudlo Creek North and Eudlo Creek South will be included and weather permitting the program should be completed before night fall. The product used for this mosquito control activity will be PROSAND @ 4kg per hectare across all zones.
Have your say on weed and pest management strategy
Coast residents are being invited to join in the ongoing battle to protect the region’s natural environment from weeds and pest animals, by having a say on the draft Sunshine Coast Local Government Area Pest Management Plan (http://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=pest-plan. The draft will be available for public comment until 4.00pm on Monday, October 18. Pest weeds and pest animals are not only an imminent problem for the environment but also rural and agricultural lands. Farming in the current environment is hard enough without additional opposition from these pests. Wild deer, pigs and dogs still impact on our rural industries and I am encouraged that the State Government has a Pest Management Plan for the Mary Valley lands currently in their ownership. Foxes and cats are having major impacts on native animal populations. I acknowledge the leadership role that the community and stakeholders have played in the program to date.
Walk for the homeless
I took part in Walk for the Homeless to aid the Shack Homeless Shelter on Saturday, September 25. Participants left from the Shack Homeless Shelter at Price Street at around 9.00am and walked to the duck ponds at Palmwoods and back again. Activities and a lunch were held at Palmwoods before we returned to Nambour, spending the night in a blanket in the Nambour Council Building forecourt. Many people have asked why I would participate on this level and my response has been ‘not until you have walked a mile in someone else’s shoes do you get to understand what life is like for them’. This was a very humbling experience and I really want to thank all of those that took part, I can honestly say that it really opened my eyes.

Time to go PINK for women It’s nearly October and the time of year to dress in pink and, importantly, focus on women’s health. Karen Bucholz, Community Services Co-ordinator at Cancer Council Queensland said next month, along with participating in fundraising events like Girls Night In, women are encouraged to take the time to be body aware. Women should consult their GP if they notice any of the following: a persistent lump, lumpiness or thickening on the breast; changes to the nipple such as crusting, ulceration, redness or drawing in of the nipple; discharge from the nipple; any change of the shape, feel, size or colour of the breast; dimpling or puckering of the breast skin; unusual breast pain which is not associated with a monthly menstrual cycle; irregular vaginal bleeding; changes to the skin of the vulva such as redness, ulceration or irritation and itching; discomfort or bleeding during or after intercourse; any unusual or unexplained pelvic pain, swollen legs or backache. Ms Bucholz encourages all women to take three simple screening measures to ensure their continued good health.
“All women aged 50 - 69 years should have a breast screen every two years, which is available free through BreastScreen Queensland. It’s also vitally important that all women aged 18 – 70 years who have ever been sexually active are screened for cervical cancer through a Pap smear every two years, and for women aged over 50 years, a faecal occult blood test, or FOBT, every two years to check for bowel cancer.” Cancer Council Queensland is calling on women across Queensland to get their friends together for Girls Night In anytime during October in support of the one in two Queensland women who will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85 years. For more information about Girls Night In and to register as a host, please visit www.girlsnightin.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85.

The National Herbalist’s Association of Australia (NHAA), the peak organisation representing herbalists and naturopaths in Australia, has applauded the National Institute of Complementary Medicines’ report on complementary medicines and its potential to save millions of dollars in the Australian health budget. This report is crucial to foster developments towards an integrative medicine model in Australia. John Baxter, President of NHAA said herbalists and naturopaths have been practising using these medicines for many years now. “If we had not been using these medicines their use would have been lost to medicine completely.” Herbal medicine is the base of many modern pharmaceutical drugs and blending the two health sectors together will enable greater consumer choice in health care. The NHAA has been lobbying for regulation since 1925 and feels it is important to see researchers and public health advocates recognising the contribution of complementary medicines in our community. “This report gives greater credibility to complementary medicines and to the work
of professional herbalists and naturopaths generally,” Baxter added. National Herbal Medicine Week (NHMW) is being celebrated across Australia with many events planned throughout the week. For more details, please visit www.nhaa.org.au NHMW is gaining momentum each year as Herbalists take their medicines and professional practices to the people of Australia with information events, presentations, celebrations, and garden walks. The NHAA has represented professional herbalists and naturopaths since 1920. It has been pursuing regulation of these professions to provide the public a means of determining appropriately trained professionals. The NHAA sets the precedent of high standards of education and professional practice for naturopaths and herbalists within Australia.

Looking for support to get your life back on track? Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC) has a program available to community members named ‘Participate in Prosperity - Open Door (PIP program)’ funded under the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation’s ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ initiative. Through one-on-one case management, we can support you to make positive steps towards a better life by identifying your needs and
Teens concerned about alcohol abuse Disturbing findings in Life Education Queensland’s ‘Ocsober 2010 youth alcohol survey’ have highlighted that 70.6 per cent of young people aged 15 - 17 believe that alcohol use is increasing among their peers, and 69 per cent think that it’s OK to get drunk. The survey underlines the need for more alcohol education in schools, and for adults to be more responsible role models. The survey was conducted by the charity Life Education Queensland, as part of the launch of their ‘Ocsober’ campaign, where adults are challenged to cut out alcohol for the month of October to raise money for drug and alcohol education in local schools. CEO Michael Fawsitt said the findings were worrying and made the Ocsober campaign even more important. “We're encouraging parents to take the lead by signing up to Ocsober through our website: www.ocsober.com.au” Life Education is Queensland’s largest non government provider of drug and health education to children and they rely on Ocsober to generate funds for their programs in the local community.

Personal development in areas such as confidence building, budgeting skills and workshops (e.g. relationships, communication, interview skills) are also addressed. Let us support you to get your life back on track. For more information or to arrange a time to meet to discuss this program further, please phone Gail on 5494 0508 Monday - Friday.

Having built water tanks, Ian knows what to look for when cleaning your water tank, and can provide a free, expert inspection of your tank. Ian is continually amazed at the tanks he sees, how many have problems and are deteriorating. He likes people to think of their water
tank as an investment and encourages people to price one to see how much they are worth now. “I see a lot of tanks with cracks and white calcium marks and people don’t realise how damaging they are to the water tank,” Ian says. “The cracks are not leaking much water but a small problem fixed in the early stages is a lot better than waiting for it to turn into an expensive repair,” he says. Ian can also repair concrete metal tanks for less than it costs to buy one! Feel free to contact Ian on 0403 187 517 or 3204 4910 for tank cleaning, tank repairs, tin and concreting and leaf guard protection, plus heaps more.”

OFFSET VS REDRAW
Offset accounts operate as regular transaction accounts, giving you ready access to your funds. Interest earned on the account is automatically deposited into home loan account, thereby Are you better off with an offset your reducing the balance of your facility or a redraw option? Redraw Facilities Redraw facilities enable you to deposit any spare income you have directly into your home loan account. You can then redraw from the loan any funds that are in excess of your regular repayments. In terms of interest savings, a redraw facility has much the same effect as a 100% offset account. Offset vs redraw If a 100% offset account and a redraw facility have the same outcome in terms of savings, what are the advantages of one over the other? Because offset accounts are essentially savings accounts and operate as such, you’ll have easy access to your funds. Most come with an ATM, EFTPOS and cheque access, some offer phone banking and some even have a credit card. Transaction fees may be charged in the same manner as a standard savings account, but most lenders will waive transaction charges on
offset accounts altogether. Ideally, you can arrange to have all of your salary paid directly into the offset account. This ensures that any income not spent is being used to reduce the balance of your loan. While receiving the interest savings you have peace of mind in knowing that you can access your funds at any time. Some institutions will limit you to as few as two redraws per year. Others will charge you up to $50 per withdrawal. Look for a redraw facility that provides you with maximum flexibility at minimum cost. Call Adviser Teresa Harrison. A 100% offset account will be a more attractive option than a restrictive or expensive redraw facility if you’re intending to use the account for day-to-day transactions.

Win $25,000 of home furnishings with First National Throughout October, First National Real Estate is offering the chance for one lucky individual or family to update their home with $25,000 worth of brand new furniture and energy efficient appliances. All entrants have to do is visit the First National Real Estate website, firstnational.com.au, follow the prompts, answer a couple of simple questions and submit their entry form to be in the running for the $25,000 home furnishings voucher. “Lots of First Home Buyers bought homes last year as a result of the stimulus package and many more Australian families are putting off the replacement of old, inefficient appliances. So, we thought we’d give one lucky family or individual a helping hand,” says Denise Pinwill, principal of First National Beerwah. First National Real Estate adopted an energy efficiency stance in 2009, providing its national network of offices with an Energy Efficiency Kit to assist its agents to reduce energy consumption in their offices and their customers’ homes. “An important part of the kit is a booklet printed on recycled paper that shows Australian homeowners and tenants how to lower their home’s energy bills,” says Denise. “The book was so popular, our office soon ran out of copies but customers can still download a copy, or see all our energy efficiency and sustainability advice, by visiting firstnational.com.au/energyefficient.” The website, booklets and brochures help people choose, and better use, more efficient appliances, solve design problems in older homes, and create more sustainable Australian native gardens. To enter the competition, participants should visit www.beerwahrealestate. com.au and follow the links to the Super Massive $25,000 Giveaway. “You can enter as many times as you like between October 1 and October 31. It’s that simple, there’s no skill required and all entrants have an equal chance to win,” Denise said.

Wow a 1,646 square metre block in the middle of town
This neat and tidy four bedroom brick home is an absolute steal at this price. The large 1,646m2 block is flat and useable which means your children (two legs or four) have the space to run around and be children without committing you to a weekend busting gardening schedule. The large north facing patio overlooks the private backyard allowing you to keep an eye on what the ‘young ones’ are getting up to whilst enjoying the morning sunshine or afternoon shade. The layout of the home allows for the parents (or a lucky teenager) to have their own retreat area with private bathroom. There is no storage problems with a garden shed for the lawn mower, garden tools etc and a 9m X 6m shed that has power and lights. So if you’re a growing family on a tight budget this is a property to make you and the bank manager smile. 27 Dorson Drive, Mooloolah. Queensland housing industry still last in the recovery queue
The Urban Development Institute of Australia (Queensland) last week released its quarterly industry research report showing Queensland’s housing remains the most affected since the global financial crisis. “In terms of home building approvals, the Sunshine State is still suffering more than anywhere else in the country,” said UDIA Qld President Warren Harris. “Approvals had been improving in early 2010 but as interest rate rises started to bite, they dropped again to 22 per cent lower than the pre-GFC 2000’s average,” he said. “In the context of recent comments from RBA governor Glenn Stevens indicating more rate rises are imminent, we are obviously gravely concerned about the effect that further rises will have. “Mr Stevens this week warned the resources boom is threatening to overstimulate the economy, with domestic economic growth likely to surpass the long-term trend in 2011. “The Queensland housing industry has been hoping for a recovery in activity - it’s hard to contemplate a further move backwards,” he said. “While there has been some improvement in employment in the last quarter, employment in the construction sector remains down by 24,072 since August 2008,” Mr Harris said. “Queensland is also still under building. In the 2009 – 2010 financial year, it is estimated that 8,000 more homes were required to meet population growth than were commenced. “With housing approvals running at 25 per cent below the longer term levels in the last quarter and unit approvals running at 40 per cent below, the undersupply is likely to continue,” he said. Other findings in the report illustrate the erosion of housing affordability for Queensland families. Queensland is classed as substantially unaffordable with around 65 per cent of Queensland families unable to afford a $434,000 home (Qld median house price). At this point, each $10,000 price change or 0.25 per cent interest rate change is estimated to exclude a further 20,000 families from purchase. According to the report, the median house price would need to be reduced to $350,000 to be affordable for around half of Queensland’s families. “This places the Queensland Government under even greater pressure to resolve the uncertainty and quantum of infrastructure charges in the immediate future and to significantly reduce the costs of delays in planning systems and processes,” Mr Harris said. 42

Pastor Rod Jobe Church on the Rise
Fear makes our lives miserable
There was a lady who died in 1916 name Hetty Green. She was called America’s greatest miser. When she died in 1916, she left an estate valued at $100 million. But she was so miserly that she ate cold oatmeal in order to save the expense of heating the water. When her son had a severe leg injury, she took so long trying to find a free clinic to treat him that his leg had to be amputated because of advanced infection. I am sure she was worried about losing her wealth, so she didn’t even enjoy her life! We can be so afraid of losing our wealth or job that we never enjoy our life. Some people are so afraid that something is going to happen to their marriage, that they never get close, or have the intimacy they could have. Have you ever met a ‘worry wart’ who wasn’t miserable? Worry and fear can make our life so miserable. There are hidden fears that motivate us too. Fear of failure causes people to never start, or try anything that isn’t safe. Fear of rejection makes us afraid to do anything that could draw criticism or give someone a chance to laugh at us. In relationships there is the fear of rejection and
the pain that brings. Some have a fear of the future or a fear about confrontation. ‘There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.’ 1 John 4:18 The more we experience the love of God, the less fear we will have. It is a matter of trust. When we realise that God will take care of us, it relieves our fear. When your children came to the breakfast table today they were not in fear that there would be nothing to eat. They know that when they’re hungry they’ll get food. That mum or dad will provide for them. They trust you for that. They know that we love them and will provide for them so they’re not afraid. God says that about His children. ‘I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you, so that we confidently say, the Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?’ Hebrews 13:5,6. God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life. As you journey with Him and come to trust Him fears will melt away.

Down & dirty with Brownie brownie@gcnews.com.au Jobs for the yard in October
• Look at top-dressing your lawn. A thin layer of top-dressing soil is best. Any hollow areas need the turf lifted, the soil added underneath, and then replace the turf. Don’t just pile it on top as it will kill the grass and encourage weeds. • If you’re lucky enough to grow tropical peaches, you should be picking them this month. • Watch out for leaf miner in your citrus trees. • Recent new growth is susceptible to this burrowing caterpillar. Spray every two - three weeks with a pest spray or white oil to control the problem. • Prune your poinsettias by two thirds to promote strong growth for next autumn. • Vines – flowering or fruiting – will be growing quickly, so keep training them so that they grow where you want them to (not the other way around). • Dig lots of compost and manure into the spot where you will be planting your dahlias next month.
Vegetables
Plant asparagus, silverbeet, capsicum, pumpkin, choko, zucchini, shallots, cucumber, beans, eggplant, lettuce, okra, radish, spring onion, tomato, sweet corn and sweet potato.
Flowers
Plant alyssum, amaranthus, torenia, bedding begonia, gomphrena, cosmos, gerbera, marigold, petunia, coleus, portulaca, carnation, salvia, zinnia, aster, celosia, sunflower, calendula,
californian poppy, chrysanthemum, dianthus, gloxinia, phlox and snapdragon.

Other events
• October 1 and 2, Peachester District Horticulture Society – Spring Flower Show. Great flowers, great plants, great food, great
GMAN nursery plants discounted for Spring It is great weather for planting natives and our nursery is overstocked! To reward those of you who are prepared to revegetate larger properties we are offering a 20 per cent discount on orders of 50 or more plants for the month of October. Smaller orders less than 50 remain at $1.00 per plant which is still really good value. We still have some stocks of the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine (Pararistolochia praevenosa) for $6.00 each in larger pots. The planting of these vines to support the larvae of the beautiful butterfly has been most successful in our local area. There have already been reliable
reports of butterfly sightings in Beerwah and Glass House mountains this spring. Let’s hope these will soon be as common as they were before the impact of clearing and the introduced Dutchman’s Pipe vine almost eliminated both the butterfly and the host vine. All plant enquiries and sales please contact Gwen, phone 5493 0029.
WEED FILE Dutchman’s Pipe Aristolochia elegans This garden vine was popular as a novelty garden plant due to its unusual flowers and heart-shaped leaves. It is related to our native Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine, but Dutchmans pipe is deadly poisonous to the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. They lay their eggs on the leaves of the Dutchman’s Pipe thinking it’s the native vine. The survival of this beautiful rare butterfly relies on local gardeners and landholders getting rid of their Dutchman’s pipe and planting as much of the native vine as possible.
•
The photo shows a vine, Dutchman’s Pipe, which destroys the larvae of the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. Please avoid planting it, and report any sightings to Council, as it is a declared weed pest.

Clean up a storm in a street near you NRMA Insurance and the Queensland SES are urging south-east Queenslanders to help each other prepare for the upcoming storm season to boost community resilience. Research carried out this month by NRMA Insurance* shows more than three quarters of Queensland households would be prepared to pitch in to help their neighbourhood get ready for storm season. However, only one in five would be willing to take the lead and organise a clean-up. NRMA Insurance spokesperson Frank Adler said communities that were well prepared for disasters, such as severe storms, were in a better position to cope in the early emergency phase and more likely to recover quickly. “We need residents to be thinking about ‘me’, but also ‘we’, when it comes to severe weather,” he said. “Close communities are often safer and more resilient communities because there’s a willingness to look out for one another and help each other get back on their feet. We need to prepare our own households for storms but also help our neighbours be ready and know what to do.” Of the one in five residents who would not get involved in a working bee in their street, 32 per cent cited busy schedules, 20 per cent said they were not interested and a further 20 per cent did not know many neighbours. The NRMA Insurance research found nearly one in five Queenslanders did not know any of their neighbours, while half spoke to the people next door less than once a month or not at all. “It pays to know your neighbours so you can be in a position to help one another before, during and after severe weather,” Mr Adler said. “Having a well prepared neighbourhood also reduces the likelihood of property damage. Objects can become airborne missiles in severe storms, so you may clean up and prepare but still find your neighbour’s debris damaging your property.” “The good news is that nine out of 10 residents, if asked, would help their neighbour get ready for storm season by clearing gutters and removing loose items from the yard. The key may be to simply ask.” Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said it was important neighbours connected and looked out for one another, being especially mindful of any people who may not be able to help themselves. “Whether it’s helping someone new to the area prepare their property before an event or offering refuge to an elderly neighbour during a severe storm, I’ve heard some great examples of ways in which communities look out for one another and help each other through these unpredictable times,” he said. “It’s so important to ensure this type of sentiment continues. Communities who are in touch with each other are more likely to respond appropriately and in a timely way to residents in need. “I encourage everyone to say a friendly hello to their neighbours and keep them in mind when severe storms strike.” * Survey of 500 Queensland households carried out by Pure Profile Research for NRMA Insurance, September 2010.

Sports results Tibro’s Netball grand final news Contributed by Wendy Carroll, publicity officer
Well Tibro’s certainly went out with a big bang this year with four teams making their grand finals. The Caloundra Netball Association grand finals were held on Saturday, September 11 on a sunny, clear day. There certainly was a buzz in the stadium with a curtain of green and black balloons, streamers, hats and pom poms! This is my first year in the Tibros Club comp and I am heart warmed by the family spirit within the club. I can’t quite put my finger on it but the camaraderie is awe-inspiring. Many friends and family traveled to Caloundra to support the four teams in their respective finals. Here is how they went…
Our youngest team in junior B, division one, the Opals, finished third on the competition ladder, playing a hard finals campaign and beating teams they had never beaten before. They played a consistent, strong, grand final defeating Pacific Pelicans 21-17. Intermediate C, division one winners were the Emeralds. Most of the team has been together for the past six years. The girls have only lost three competition games in the last three years and were undefeated winners in 2010. The final score against Pacific Blackbirds was 24-15. The Diamonds shone brightly against the Moffat Beach Sharks in the div three intermediate C final, finishing strongly to the tune of 25 to 14. Great work Diamonds, you did us proud! Let’s please not forget the valiant efforts of the Pearls, who despite being in front against the Meridan Hornets for most of the game, were narrowly beaten in the final quarter. Great work guys, we are so proud of you! So that’s all the grand final news from Tibro’s for now but with twilight comps and evening comps running, I will be sure to be reporting to you soon! Over and out for now though, from Wendy Carroll, newly elected publicity officer.

Last Monday was our ‘Strawberry Fair’ Mixed Fours. It ended up an 18 end game, as a result of a couple of rain interruptions. An enjoyable lunch followed which was provided by our ladies. Our local strawberries featured, both on the sponge cakes and as some of the minor prizes. Eight teams from away, and four home teams enjoyed the day. The winners of the day, with a plus 36, were the Solander Lake team of N Brayley, A Thorp, C Brayley and Pam McMaster. The runners-up, with a plus 26, were Steve (Yorkie) Manson, Nev Shaw, Gloria Shaw and Rosemay Roderick from Mooloolah Valley. The mystery prize went to the Woodford team of M Dahl, M Parrington, R Graham and L Smith. In the First Round of the Club Graded and Drawn Ladies’ Pairs on Wednesday, Kate White and Millie Freshwater 21 defeated Margaret Lehmann and Rae Farrell 10, and Di Garland and Denise Sinton 15 defeated Dawn Gersekowski and Joan Wilson 14. In the social games, Noelle Dean, Dennis Hume and Marleen Bertram won the triples 19 to 15, and Joseph Albrecht and John McSwain won the pairs 21 to 15. Brian Saunders and Graham Turton won Thursday’s Open Pairs, with two wins plus 42 points. The runners-up prize was shared between Bob Bloomer and Ron Wilson’s team and Barry Richardson and Kerry Capern’s team, both with a score of 24, and also both with 11 points in the second game. 48 |

Last week saw the start of our Friday Night Bowls with 10 teams enjoying a sociable evening of Two Bowl Open Pairs. The winners, with a score of 182 were Lindsay Henderson and Jack Timm and the runners-up were Margaret and Gary Lehmann with 180 points. The prize for the night ‘out of the hat’ went to Dennis Hume and Bill Tumbridge. The format is four games of eight ends and we use ‘consistency scoring’. This type of play is designed for teams to circulate and meet four other teams during the night. The form of scoring is player friendly and enables all teams to be competitive. Members and visitors are welcome for a social game of bowls under lights from 6.00pm to 9.00pm. Tuesday, September 21 was a quiet day with a few social Bowlers. In Consistency Eileen Pierce beat Rosemay Roderick. The meat tray went home with Gloria Shaw. Another game of Consistency was played on Thursday in which Jo Littler beat Judy Walker. Friday 3 bowl Pairs winners were Darren Black and John Esdaile (no more bridesmaid dresses needed), 2nd, Lloyd and Judy Walker and 3rd, Ede Clark and Horst Jonscher. On Saturday we had a lovely social game. In Consistency Marilyn Boulton beat Joy Ensbey. The raffles were won by some visitors dining in the Club and Marilyn won the wine. As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. I finally arrived over an hour late and saw that the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologised to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place and earth covered most of it. I

didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this poor, homeless man. And as I played ‘Amazing Grace,’ the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I ain’t never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.” Apparently I was still lost...
