Hi everyone

Well with Father’s Day now over, you know what that means, any day now you will start to see Christmas decorations appearing in the shops. Don’t panic you still have 15 weeks and three days until the Big fella comes down the chimney to deliver the gifts. However, for those of you who love getting into the spirit of the season and like to cover the house in twinkling lights, you are probably getting started planning and doing that fun task of checking and replacing bulbs! Once again, GCNews will be getting behind the ‘Lighting Up Glasshouse Country’ Christmas Light competition. There will be more details of this year’s categories and prizes in the paper in early October. I know that there are plenty of you out there that think each year – “next year I will be more organised and I will decorate the house – the kids will love it.’ Now you have no excuse

you have plenty of time to make it happen!! I know last year when we were in Tasmania for Christmas and I couldn’t believe how many Santa Scarecrows were attached to front gates or stuck on roof tops, I thought they looked great and I promised myself I would do one for this year. They definitely created a festive feel and seemed a little easier than decorating the house with lights – so with 15 weeks to go, I suppose my hardest task is convincing Brownie how great one of them would look in the front garden?

No aerodrome for Glass House It seems the peace and serenity of our backyard is to be retained, following the State Government’s announcement last week not to relocate the Caloundra aerodrome.

Glass House MP Andrew Powell said the decision is a great outcome for the local Glass House community, where a site off Johnston Road had been earmarked for the relocation of the aerodrome. “After I spoke in Parliament on the importance of keeping Glass House an airport-free zone, the Bligh Government announced the aerodrome would not be moved. “This is a sensible outcome and I greatly appreciate the support I have received from locals as I fought this campaign to stop the aerodrome being shifted.” Mr Powell said his survey of more than 500 residents from the Johnston and Bowen Road community revealed over 95 percent opposition to the proposed relocation of the aerodrome. Apart from the impact on the Glass House green corridor, other concerns revealed by the survey included disruption to existing aviation business and economic costs. Divisional Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said it was a decision that had to be made somewhere along the line, one way or another. “I appreciate the State government’s quick response to Council’s calls to fund the relocation,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

by Kylie Wyer

Cr Grosskreutz said the decision will make a significant impact on the extensive planning already undertaken by Council in the area. “Now we have to work out how to plan around the aerodrome, and how to allow for the growth of the aerodrome itself,” Cr Grosskreutz said. Last week, GC News received plenty of readers concerns about the proposed relocation, with many firmly against the decision to relocate it to Glass House. Vocal proponent of the proposed relocation and local resident, Gwen Malcolm, said it’s not a dead issue. “‘From little things big things grow’, we have seen this happen with the most noisy and polluting businesses in our area. Besides, no-one can control the aircraft currently flying over our precious mountains, let alone from an airport in Johnston Road, in spite of what Cr Grosskreutz says. “Enjoy the fact that the airport is off the agenda, but never relax entirely,” Gwen said. The Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, Stirling Hinchliffe, said the decision not to move the aerodrome would save more than $100 million tax payer dollars and provide certainty for the 220 workers, 20 small businesses, 13 leaseholders and the air museum at the Aerodrome. The Minister also said the State government would start the process of using ministerial powers to progress the Caloundra South Structure Plan to boost housing affordability in the area.

As local residents are celebrating one win, with the State government quashing plans to relocate the Caloundra aerodrome to Glass House, another group of residents are feeling the strain as they struggle to make any headway in their efforts to see the access road into the Beerwah Sportsground completed.

GC News last raised the issue of the ongoing ‘blame game’ between Council and the State government over the access road in June, with Council firmly placing responsibility on the State Government. Earlier this year, the Beerwah Charity Sports Committee made the difficult decision to not proceed with this year’s event, which would have been the 40th anniversary of the popular community fundraiser, because of the poor condition of the entrance road. According to Council’s Transport and Engineering Services manager Brian Peebles, the State government made the existing entry dangerous, not Council. He said the State had promised to construct a part of the works needed for the new access, and Council had, in good faith, continued to negotiate with them to honour the agreement. When GC News contacted Council for an update on the project late last month, it seems there has been little or no progress. Mr Peebles said the works are now more difficult because Council doesn’t have the same powers as the State government when it came to exemptions for state permits. “Council has however completed the new survey plans, is currently preparing the detailed design and started the environmental approval

processes, however at this time the state government has still not formally responded to the request they fund their portion of the works,” Mr Pebbles said. Divisional Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said she was pleased that Council had had a number of meetings with senior State government officials, including the regional director of Main Roads, Dennis Tennant. She said she believed the issue would sort itself out shortly. “We have a very good working relationship, and Mr Tennant has said that he is committed to working with the Council to resolve the matter as soon as possible,” Cr Grosskreutz said. Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle, said it (the situation) wasn’t good enough, and last week wrote to both Brian Pebbles and the local regional director of Main Roads, Dennis Tennant, to request a meeting between all parties within the next 14 days in an effort to resolve the ongoing issue. Mr McArdle said this issue is of great concern for the local community, who expect and deserve the same facilities, and maintenance of assets as enjoyed by their coastal cousins. “Can’t the powers that be see the benefits of events like this both for fundraising and for local morale? “If they can’t then their aims and aspirations for the region are either built on shaky foundations or seriously misplaced,” Mr McArdle said. Charity Sports Committee Chair, Bruce Page, said it was urgent that works got underway before the start of the wet season. “It’s not as if the works don’t have to happen. Surely we don’t have to wait until there is a serious accident before they do something about it,” Mr Page said.

Hall a labour of love

As in days gone by, the Glass House Mountains Hall has remained a central part of local community life, having hosted countless local celebrations, dances, movies, meetings, and other special functions. Today, at nearly 100 years young, it remains a proud and integral part of the community, thanks to a new lease of life initiated by a group of tireless, committed volunteers. For those who haven’t visited the Glass House Mountains Community Hall in a while, you may be pleasantly surprised by the extensive renovations, which have almost doubled the floor space of the much used facility. The recently completed Stage One of the renovations, featuring a new entrance and a committee/meeting room, as well as extensive new floor area, has set the committee back a grand total of $225,000, all of which, with the exception of a $10,000 grant from Council, has been raised by the committee through community support. There’s little doubt it has been a labour of love for the committee executive, John and Aileen Winterhoff, and April Anderson-Knijff Ross and Peter Ross, who have worked feverishly behind the scenes for a number of years to get the renovations off the ground. According to Aileen Winterhoff, whose husband John has been the

Glass House Mountains Community Hall before the renovations INSET: the building, formerly known as the School of Arts, in 1916

The newly renovated Glass House Mountains Community Hall president of the Hall committee for more years than he cares to remember, the new look hall is testament to the dedication of the executive committee, which started the renovation process back in 1984. “We started this process off back in 1984, when we had the plans drawn up. This was followed in 1996 with a new roof, and it has taken until January of this year, when the renovations started, to accumulate the money to fund it,” Aileen said. The Glass House Mountains Community Hall began life as the School of Arts, a multipurpose hall built by the community for the community in 1916. Around the time of its 75th anniversary, its name was changed to better reflect its past, and present use. “Around the time we had the plans drawn up we doorknocked the local area to try and raise funds for the extensions, while in recent years we’ve been applying for grants to get the work done. At the end of the day, it has been largely thanks to the support of the community, through their use of the hall, that has seen us raise enough money.” Currently, there are around a dozen regular weekly users of the Hall, all of whom pay a modest fee to use the newly updated facilities. Stage Two of the renovations are expected to include a new awning at the front of the building, along with improvements to the stage. If you are interested in hiring out the hall for your next meeting or function, give Aileen a call on 5496 9349.

From the schools Beerwah High’s up and coming athletes Contributed by Michelle Tuck, Head of Special Education Services Recently, Year 11 student Mitchell James, spent five days in Adelaide with over 800 other athletes competing in the Special Olympics Australia IX National Games. This exciting event gave Mitchell and the other athletes a wonderful opportunity to show off their skills, enjoy the fun and friendship of competition and to proudly represent their state. The games featured 12 sports: athletics, aquatics, basketball, bocce, equestrian (demonstration sport), football (soccer), golf, gymnastics, sailing, softball, tennis and tenpin bowling. Mitchell’s sport is tennis and he has trained very hard since selection at Mitchell James the Queensland State Titles in June last year, travelling to Melbourne twice this year to compete in the Ausrapid Australian Classic as part of the Australian Open and also the Victorian Tennis Championships. Queensland had 12 tennis athletes in the 180 athlete team (six boys/six girls) and between them they brought home a swag of medals. All this preparation and experience has paid off and Mitch has brought home, from the Special Olympics, a silver medal in the doubles comp. He then went on to play two days of singles with the final game being a ‘nail biter’, right to the end. Mitchell’s Mum Debbie recalled that final game. “Mitch’s game went for a long time and the other three courts had all finished so everyone was watching his game. He was 5-3 down and held it together to fight back

to 5-4 with the other guy serving at 30 - 0. (ie two points from winning). Mitch then played unbelievable tennis and won seven points in a row, finally winning in a tie-breaker. We couldn’t hear the score so were unsure until the last point when, composed and reserved Mitch leapt in the air with an almighty “Come on!” (like Lleyton Hewitt). The place erupted and I was screaming and crying and totally forgot to video it!” There’s more exciting times ahead for Mitchell and his parents as he is now eligible for the World Games in Athens in 2011. Mitchell’s parents, Allan and Debbie, are very proud and so is everyone at BSHS. Another athlete to watch out for is year eight student Brandon Brown, who recently successfully competed in the National Cross Country Championships held at St Paul’s, Strathpine as a part of the six member Queensland team. Brandon competes as an athlete with a disability and has run and won his way through the school division, district, zone and State to finally race in the Nationals on August 21. Brandon ran the three kilometres in 12 minutes 15 seconds and won a silver medal in the cross country and then backed up with another silver in the relay. Brandon really enjoys competing and is continuing to train hard to make it to the 2011 nationals to be to be held in Canberra. Brandon is also a valued member of Beerwah State High School’s Year 8 Athletics Excellence Program. Michelle Tuck (Head of Special Education) said that the whole school is very proud of Brandon’s achievements. “Brandon has been a proud member of the Queensland team who is looking towards a future goal of being part of an Australian team competing at the world championships,” Ms Tuck said.

Excellent art

Two Year 12 girls from Beerwah State High School, Sarah Taripo and Elice Freshwater, are talented art students whose work was recently selected to be included in The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art and Design, displayed at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery. Artwork by visual art and design students from high schools across the Sunshine Coast region is being featured there until September 16. The opening night was held on August 26. “It was really good. I’ve never been to anything like that before. It was good to see other students art work from around the Sunshine Coast,” Sarah said. Sarah’s impressive artwork was created out of sticky tape and comprised of two figures which symbolise the emotional ties within a typical 21st century family. “I come from a big family, I’m the eldest of five, so a lot of my art work is based on children and family. A highlight on the night was having people looking at my artwork and asking me how I had done it. The idea for using sticky tape was from a friend that had done it previously and encouraged me to try it out,” she said. Elice Freshwater’s outstanding artwork, ‘Three Wives’, represents one of the most momentous occasions in a woman’s life – her wedding. “I’ve always played around with fabric and white pencils. I remembered my Nan’s picture of her dress and I thought, ‘brilliant, that would work really well’. It’s something that’s going to stay in the family for a little bit as well and mean something to everybody, not just me,”

Elice said. For Elice a highlight of the night was hearing comments about her art. “There were people in front of my work not realising I was behind them and just listening to their compliments was quite flattering. Just seeing my drawings on the wall – that was the biggest thing for me because seeing it up with all this other really good art work was amazing, kind of surreal.” She said the best part was sharing the experience with Sarah. “I was really glad I could share it with Sarah. She’s one of my ‘besties’, so it was good to have her there.” Beerwah High Art Teacher Jan Simpson said the School is proud of the girls’ accomplishments. “Their work showed a very high level of skill and creativity. I have known the girls for five years and it is a pleasure to see their talent develop over that time,” she said.

Book Week at Peachester State School The 65th annual Book Week was celebrated August 21-27 at Peachester State School. It was a great week for the students and teachers to celebrate books, Australian authors and illustrators. There were competitions and stories told, all relating to a theme to promote the importance of reading, which this year was ‘Across the Story Bridge’. The highlight of the week was Wednesday, when students and teachers held their dress-up day, showcasing many well known characters. There was an array of costumes ranging from the Wizard of Oz, Lemony Snickets to Star Wars. It was difficult to see who had the most fun, the teachers or students. Following the parade of costumes there were numerous awards for the best dressed, most borrowed books and a colouring-in competition. A tasty shared morning tea was had by all.

New lectern for Beerwah Writers Group

The theme of the display was ‘Over the Story Bridge’

On August 20, the Governor General, Quentin Bryce, joined the National Executive of Book Week to announce the Book of the Year winners. There was an extensive list of books from which Peachester State School students also gave their vote on their favourite books. Our students voted the following books their winners: Young Readers Category: Tensy Farlow and the Home for Mislaid Children by Jen Storer; Early Childhood Category: Fearless. By Colin Thompson, illus Sarah Davis;Picture Book of the Year: Isabella’s Garden. By Rebecca Cool, text Glenda Millard. It was certainly a fun-filled week at Peachester State School with all students gaining further understanding of the value of reading. It is fantastic to have a conscientious group of people who put a lot of effort into bringing the week together. These include Jeannie Thorne, Louise Lewis and Dorothy Robb, who did all the hard work putting displays and books together for the children.

The Men's Shed donation of a lectern Last week, members of the Beerwah Writers Group warmly welcomed representatives from The Men’s Shed to their fortnightly meeting. Here, The Men's Shed presented the group with a brand new, hand crafted lectern. The multi-purpose lectern, expertly crafted by Men’s Shed members Frans Men and Richard Plantinga, features a removable top, which allows it to be also used on a table top. The lectern was made using recycled materials donated courtesy of Community Recycling Inc., who are proud supporters of The Men’s Shed, which holds its meetings weekly at the Resource Recovery Centre. For more information about The Men’s Shed, contact Bob McLean on 0427 606 240.

With the ever increasing reliance people have on computers, it is still surprising to see the amount of people who do not back up their business or personal data. Most just can't seem to find the time or don’t know the best method to back up the data. Others just can't see the reason for it and assume that ‘data loss will never happen to me’. Data loss can be caused by a number of things including viruses, hardware faults, software faults and even theft! Imagine having all of the wedding photos, MYOB data files or other personal data stolen or damaged and not having a copy. This would be devastating. Backing up your data is quick and easy to do, and there are a number of options you can choose from: 1) CD/DVD - Backing up specific files to a CD or DVD is quick and easy. Remember that discs can be affected by humidity, so always store discs with Damp Rid or a similar product to keep the moisture away. 2) USB Thumb Drive - These are small USB ‘sticks’ that come in sizes ranging from 1GB right through to 32GB. They are small, cheap and very portable. Be sure to purchase a quality name brand product as these will inevitably last longer than the cheapies. 3) External Hard Drive - This is a popular and very easy way of backing up your computer. They come in a range of sizes and can be set up on your PC to carry out automatic backups. This is recommended if you are constantly adding new files that require backing up such as photos, business documents and more. Backing up your data is easy and worth taking the time to set up.

Whether for business, study or even pleasure, if you use a computer these days then you’re probably familiar with Microsoft Office, a software suite which can handle your word processing, presentations, spreadsheets and much more. Similarly, Sun Microsystems in association with Oracle have launched the Open Office project, which aims to provide a quality suite of office and productivity software that is 100 per cent free and totally open source - meaning that the underlying code is freely available to anyone and everyone! What does this mean for students, businesses and household PC users? It means that you don’t need to pay steep prices just to be able to put together a spreadsheet or slideshow presentation! Can I still open Microsoft Office files? Because of a common international standard of file format, the majority of MS Office files can be opened and edited within the OpenOffice software. What exactly can OpenOffice do? Word processing, spreadsheets, databases, drawing and publishing plus slideshow presentations. Should I just get Microsoft Office anyway? There is no denying that MS Office is the best suite of productivity tools on the market, but if you don’t need all of the bells and whistles, then why not try out OpenOffice, it’s 100 per cent free! How do I get a copy of OpenOffice? Just go to http://www.openoffice.org and click the “Download” tab to get started. In summary, OpenOffice is simple to download, install and use. Microsoft Office files may look a little different when opened within the software, but are still very usable. Overall, a great free piece of software for those that don’t have, or don’t like Microsoft Office. OpenOffice.org Rating:

Secretary required

Over the past twelve months, we have been fortunate to have an enthusiastic local Glass House Mountains resident , Janelle Lockhart, take on the role of Secretary in a voluntary capacity; sadly for us Janelle is moving out of the area and we are now looking to replace her. To make the job a little bit easier, we now have a Minutes’ Secretary, however we really need someone to keep this organised checking the mail, monitoring the email, doing some correspondence etc. If you have a few hours to spare each week and are looking for some voluntary work please give this opportunity some thought.

Thanks for all those who attended our recent AGM, the attendance was strong and it was pleasing to see that a couple of newer members were happy to take on committee member roles. Sharon Vonhoff from Beerwah Camping is our new Vice President and Chris Minetti of Eden in Glasshouse Country has volunteered to be our Minutes Secretary. Thanks also to Ursula Starkovsi of About Real Estate for continuing on in the role of Treasurer and Lea Parkes for agreeing to be in our Publicity Officer. As you can see, I have agreed again for this year to stay on as President, having the support of a great committee definitely makes continuing on in this role that much easier. I would also like to offer thanks to John Winterhoff, President of the Glass House Mountains Hall for his long term service to the Chamber of Commerce in the role of Vice President.

Local athlete turns struggle into business award

Local business SculptLife Personal Training has taken out this year’s New Business of the Year award at the 2010 Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Awards. SculptLife Personal Training’s Bianca Aiono, a Glass House Mountains resident, was one of more than 80 finalists in the line up for 11 business and two individual awards. “It is a real honour to have this award mark a real milestone in everything that we have achieved from such humble beginnings,” Bianca said. The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Awards highlight the vital role small, medium and large businesses play in our local economy. They recognise growth, innovation, creativity, community leadership and industry specific achievements. Bianca says her own personal weight loss struggle was the inspiration for the newly successful business. As an elite athlete, Bianca struggled with her weight for 10 years, trying every diet, gimmick and fat pill available. When she finally discovered the secret to safe and permanent weight loss, Bianca lost 15 kilos in 12 weeks and became a Bodysculpting champion. She then quit her job and set out on a mission to transform the lives of others on a big scale. Starting with a single client and a car boot of equipment, she discovered there was a demand for mobile personal training in the Coast’s beautiful outdoors! Two years later, Bianca has more than 100 active clients, a staff of five, and operates a fully equipped studio in Warana. The SculptLife Team coaches clients one-on-one, in small groups, hold nutritional coaching challenges and recently launched Bootcamp for women with enormous success. Over the past two years SculptLife has inspired almost 850 Sunshine Coast residents to lose more than 6,000 kilos. Bianca was also recently a finalist for the Sunshine Coast Young Business Woman of the Year Award. A special mention and congratulations to another local business, Glasshouse Country Meats, which took out the Retail Business of the Year at the awards.

Stockland saves the best for last at Woodgrove Stockland’s popular Woodgrove community has reached its final stages with the latest release of outstanding home sites in the hinterland hideaway. The new Woodgrove stages feature 31 allotments close to parks and the central lake and only a short walk to local schools and shopping. Lot sizes range from 457 square metres to 829 square metres and prices start at only $183,000. A great selection of home and land packages are also available, starting at $369,000 for a four-bedroom, two-bathroom double garage home. Many of the packages come with generous builder bonuses such as air-conditioning and extra landscaping. Woodgrove was launched in March 2008 and has since become home to hundreds of new families attracted by its natural bushland setting in the heart of Beerwah. Among the latest buyers are former Beerwah High School sweethearts Greg O’Sullivan and Alysha Chamberlain. The young couple have always lived in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and decided Woodgrove was the perfect location to build their first home. “We found out about Woodgrove from one of Greg’s colleagues who had already built a home there and is buying again soon,’’ Alysha said. “The first time we visited Woodgrove we decided on the spot that this was the place where we wanted to build,’’ she said. “We really like the design, the landscaping and the quality of Stockland projects and re-sale value is really good in this area.’’ Stockland Regional Manager for the Sunshine Coast, Troy Wainwright, said the Woodgrove community had attracted many first home buyers as well as families upgrading their homes and investors. “Woodgrove is a relaxed and friendly community that is perfect for raising a family with its open space and proximity to schools, Woolworths and other shops, health services and the train station,’’ Mr Wainwright said. “It also offers easy access to sporting and leisure facilities including a public swimming pool, skate park, playing fields, pony club and 18-hole golf course. “The latest home sites are in a great location close to Coochin Creek and all the other facilities on offer in Woodgrove and nearby. For more information visit www.stockland.com.au/woodgrove, call 5494 0765 or drop into the Woodgrove Sales and Information Centre off Greg and Alysha of Woodgrove Roberts Road, Beerwah.

Our September outing was on September 1 and took us to Morayfield for ten pin bowling followed by morning tea. Guest, Jaylene, was the winner on the morning but we all had a great time. Our monthly lunch meeting takes place on September 15 at Glasshouse Sports Club, 11.00am for 11.30am start. Our guest speaker this month will be Donna Davis, a ballad poet so we are in for an interesting day. Anyone who would like to join us would be most welcome. While we spend 45 per cent of our waking time listening, we can only recall 25 per cent of what we hear. Competency in listening skills is achieved through learning and practise. Listening is not taught in schools and has therefore been considered to be less important: Communication = Listening + Speaking. Listening should be an active occupation and not just a breathing space before we can get a chance to speak again. Hear and listen: understand and think: consider and speak. Organisational – the right to be heard is not necessarily linked to what we are. Personal - our frame of mind or mood can affect the way in which we listen, we must tame our emotions and really focus on what the speaker is saying. Attitudinal - our natural tendency to judge, evaluate, approve or

disapprove of the speaker’s point of view can affect the quality of our listening. We need an open mind and should avoid selective listening, which only hears what supports our existing points of view. Language – The language of the speaker can affect our listening. Too hard or too easy will lead to us switching-off. People who have English as a second language need us to really concentrate to understand their ideas. Listening to the public is as important as speaking to the public. How to improve your listening skills - keep an eye on this page next week, to read how you can become a better communicator through listening. Even better, why don’t you give us a call on 5493 0650 to speak to Kerry or 5496 9855 to speak to Martine. We are more than happy to tell you all about the Glasshouse Country Toastmasters.

At the last meeting, we had as guests, Richard, Frens and Rob from the Men’s Shed. The purpose of their visit was to present us with a lectern constructed by the men at the shed. It is a fine example of their work and much appreciated by our group. The shed, a project of Beerwah Rotary Club, was instigated for retired men and caters for those interested in metal work, wood work, gardening and many other activities. This project is fast gaining momentum! The writings at the meeting maintained the high standard of previous presentations. David Christmas read his story of a ghost train entitled “Linville” – awaiting the conclusion! Bob Banner amused us with his tale of a talking train “Lenny the electric train”. The story was written and told with ‘tongue-in-cheek’ and had a deeper meaning than was first apparent. Steve Papa read the prologue to his book now in progress entitled “Darius – The Wizard’s Tale”. Kate Wright’s contribution to the meeting, “The Rose Soldier”, was a chilling story of a serial killer. The meeting concluded with a sad, but beautiful poem, “Bunyip Crossing”. The poem, written and read by John Wright, was greatly appreciated by all present and a delightful conclusion to the morning. Beerwah Writers Group meet every fortnight at the Library. The next meeting September 10 for a 10.00am start. Contact Trevor 5439 0313.

The abundant birdlife was a great accompaniment for our August meeting held in the garden of Maureen Yeomans. Guest speaker, John Innes, our President, spoke about beekeeping. He showed us a standard bee box and how to set it up. Each hive can hold up to 40 000 to 50 000 bees. About 22 kilograms of honey can be extracted from each hive in one season. Members were invited to 'taste test' two different honey flavours and some honeycomb. Friendship Maureen Yoemans with her Day in July magnificent giant maidenhair fern was successful with many compliments from visitors from neighbouring Garden Clubs. Thanks for all your support!

Thanks to GC News and readers for all your support! As a result of the story that ran in the paper in July, prior to our departure in the 2010 XXXX Gold Port to Port Variety Bash (GC News July 14), we managed to secure another sponsor, Bassett Barks, who came on board with some valuable sponsorship. The Bash raised $1.2m for needy children. Along the way, Variety made many presentations including a bus to Gympie Special School, $8000 worth of sporting equipment to Kilcoy School, and various similar presentations to a number of schools ‘en route’. The highlight for me was the presentation of a special riding saddle that allowed a young girl with Angelman’s Syndrome, who lives on a cattle property west of Charters Towers, the ability to ride with her brothers and sisters. Once again, thank you for your help Keith Nicolson Mt Mellum

Thanks to our ‘super’ IGA

The Glass House Mountains State School Parents and Citizens Association would like to thank the Beerwah Supa IGA for its generous donation from the Community Chest. We have wonderful, positive and motivated staff at our School and it can be difficult to accommodate all their 'wish lists' for classroom teaching materials. So this donation will be used to good effect within the school. Thank you once again for supporting both the students and staff at Glass House Mountains State School. It is greatly appreciated. Judy Keays Publicity Officer GHMSS P&C

Left in the dark about small fires

In reference to an article in GC News on August 25 in Andrew Powell’s column, ‘no small fires without permit’. I must say I was a little concerned when I initially read about the danger period so I wrote to the Rural Fire Service for clarification after not being able to apply for a permit online because their link doesn’t work. I received the following response from Paul Meghann, on behalf of Rural Operations. ‘You do not require a permit if you have a properly prepared fireplace. A properly prepared fireplace means a fireplace that is constructed of stone, metal or any other non-flammable 16

|

SEPTEMBER 8 2010

material so as to contain the perimeter of the fire. Properly prepared fireplaces also include trenches at least 30cm deep, as there have been many queries regarding hangis. The important thing to remember when advising the public regarding properly prepared fireplaces, is that no matter the construction of the fireplace, in all circumstances it is the responsibility of the person lighting or maintaining the fire to ensure adequate precautions are taken to prevent the spread of fire. Conditions applicable to Camp Fires - the ground and air space is clear of flammable material sufficient to prevent the escape of the fire; the fire and fuel used are the minimum necessary for the purpose and do not occupy an area of more than 1 sq metre; and a person is in attendance at all times while the fire is alight.’ Perhaps some further clarification is still required for everyone? Allen Stevenson Suburb

A ‘big’ thank you

May I take this opportunity to thank the wonderful people from the Glasshouse district community (Landsborough through to Beerburrum and including Peachester) who helped, those who nominated to help, but due to unforeseen circumstances couldn't, to the businesses who allowed the merchandise to be sold and to you, the wonderful public, who supported the recent Queensland Cancer Council's fundraiser, Daffodil Day. We collectively raised a total of $11,530.95, a significant increase from last year. As we intend to ‘go’ again next year, extra help with the manning of the various community stalls would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in assisting, please contact me on phone 5494 6853. Again many thanks, a great effort by all. Glenda Halpin Beerwah

UNITYWATER

UNITYWATER has gone to great pains to stress the organisation is not a charity but this should not get in the way of good customer service. In the past month, 36 people – mostly elderly pensioners – have contacted my office asking me to represent their billing complaints to Unitywater. Five of these elderly people were advised to check their own meter, one meter was going to be re-read and one situation was under investigation. Then on Tuesday this week Unitywater told me they would now not investigate complaints through my office without speaking to the customer first. This defeats the whole object of the exercise. Apart from the fact that most of the people who asked for my help find it difficult to read their own meters and monitor their water usage on a regular basis, the question is why they should have to. Others find their bills difficult to understand. Every one of these customers came to my office because they had previously tried to contact Unitywater and were either left holding on to the phone for hours or are still waiting for the promised call back. For those who wanted a payment plan while their deadline to settle the bill looms ever closer they have met with the “we are not a charity” response. This is simply not good enough and many of these elderly people are stressing out over the amount they have to pay and whether what they see as unfair billing will continue into the future. I will continue to push this issue and have written to the CEO asking him to withdraw this ridiculous statement. Good customer service means helping the customer, not standing in their way. Perhaps to the comment “we are not a charity” should be added “and we don’t care anyway”. Mark McArdle MP Member for Caloundra

Responsible development

My family and I moved here to enjoy the unique beauty and rural-type environment of the Glass House Mountains area. We left the suburbs of Brisbane as the green areas around us were being swallowed up by high-density developments. Now our new Council is proposing a change that will affect the beautiful environment and unique lifestyle of the Glass House area. They are hoping to re-zone two large areas off Poole Road and Fullertons Road from rural to township residential which will allow block sizes of 650m2 and a combined potential of 150 extra houses (180+ extra cars). If you do not oppose development, but wish to see the area developed sensibly and in a way that will preserve the local environment and wildlife, then write into the council before September 10 (re: Draft Amendment No. 4 to Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Strategic Planning Branch, Locked Bag 72, Sunshine Coast Mail Centre, QLD 4560). Tracey Glasshouse

A step back in time

Last Thursday, the president of Glasshouse Country Uniting Church's Adult Fellowship, Mrs Ella Daniells, organised a step back into the 1800's with a visit to Bankfoot House in Glasshouse. Our guide, Ron, told us some fascinating stories and even played the pianola for us in the lounge room. We laughed as he had to hang on tight to the seat as he was pedalling. The notes went up and down by themselves as they belted out 12th Street Rag. Thanks Mrs Heather Gowen for the pianola repair! One of our members, Ethel Burgess, remembers Bankfoot House well as it belonged to her Uncle Jack Ferris who lived in the house until a few years ago and died at the grand age of 101 years.

Parliamentary News

As we let our hair down to relax and enjoy the approaching warmer weather at this time of year, it is important that we don’t forget to take care in and around the water. The clear message from the drowning figures of recent years is that you can never be complacent when around any water. It is sobering and shocking to know that the latest figures show the number of drowning deaths in Australia exceeded 300 for the first time in six years, in the year July 2008 to June 2009. There were 302 drownings – an increase of 41 over the previous years and 25 above average. I urge all readers not to be complacent around water, especially when it involves young children. Information about drowning deaths can be found in The National Drowning Reports at http://www.royallifesaving.com.au//resources/documents 2009_ RLSSA_National_Drowning_Report_Web.pdf

Australia Day Awards

If you know someone who is doing great things in the community, you should nominate them for a Fisher Community Australia Day Award. Recipients are recognised for their contributions in the areas of community service, industry and commerce, the arts, sport and recreation, and for their work with seniors’ groups, sporting clubs, youth organisations, and welfare and community support organisations. Nomination forms for the 2011 ceremony are available from my electorate office or by phoning 5444 4888 or 1300 301 981 (toll free within Fisher). Go ahead. Nominate a local hero!

Financial Claims Scheme

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has released a paper in response to the second round of consultation on the implementation of the Financial Claims Scheme (FCS) for authorised deposit-taking institutions (ADIs). Submissions on the response paper and reporting standard can be submitted by October 15, 2010. APRA will release the final reporting standard in late 2010, to take effect from April 1, 2011. The consultation package can be found on the APRA website at: www.apra.gov.au/Policy/ADI-FCS-Response-to-submissions-and-draftreporting-standard-August-2010.cfm

It has been another busy week in Parliament. Legislation was passed that will now mean all motorists will receive an annual $24.00 reduction in their Compulsory Third Party (CTP) fee. Whilst I supported the legislation, I am concerned that it’s a very tokenistic response to the spiralling costs of running a vehicle. As I have mentioned previously, the fuel subsidy has been removed, vehicle registrations have sky-rocketed, drivers’ licences cost excessively more and tolls have gone through the roof – so you won’t need to look far to spend the $24 saving. But every bit does help, which is why it got my support. The same legislation has also ensured that future toll increases can not be more than the Consumer Price Index or CPI – more belated good news for motorists.

Caloundra Aerodrome not moving to Glass House

The Premier announced in last week’s Parliament that the Caloundra Aerodrome will not be moving to Johnston Road, Glass House Mountains. The Premier’s announcement came on the back of a speech I delivered the night before calling for Glass House to stay an airport free zone. After surveying 550 residents from the Johnston and Bowen Road communities, an overwhelming 95 percent of people were not in support of the Caloundra Aerodrome relocating to Glass House. I have sincerely appreciated the feedback I received from locals and would like to say what a great victory this is for our community.

Office relocation

You might now have heard that my office is finally moving into a more central location within the electorate. My office in Caboolture was permanently closed from 4.30pm on Friday, September 3 and we will reopen in our new location at 70 Maple Street (PO Box 727) Maleny 4552 on Monday, September 13. The office will be closed for a week so we can move and get everything organised – if you have any urgent issues you can still call the office number on 1800 555 016 or send an email to glass.house@ parliament.qld.gov.au. Once the office opens we would love to see as many local faces as possible so if you are up in the Hinterland, make sure you drop by and say ‘hi’.

Beerwah Sportsground Portable Grandstand

Free composting and wormfarm workshops

$100,000 has been allocated in the 2010/11 Council budget for more seating for the Beerwah Sportsground. The Council is looking at a portable stand (or stands) that can be moved around as the different events are held. Council officers will discuss this funding with the management committee later this month to progress thoughts about potential designs to get the best outcome for the funding. I know many of the existing sporting groups and event planners will welcome more spectator seating at the sportsground.

Council is hosting a series of organic recycling workshops across the Coast from today. Workshops aim to give residents the skills to reduce their organic waste at home via a compost or wormfarm system. Those interested in attending can expect an informative demonstration on setting up a compost bin or worm farm, what to put in, what to keep out and answers to those frequently asked questions. Get in early as bookings are essential and places limited. Call 5475 7272 or log onto the events page on Council’s website.

The Criterium track will soon be open to the community and the gate unlocked. Vehicle barriers have been designed and will shortly be installed at the entry to the track. These barriers are needed to save those who might see an opportunity to try out the old Torana in the middle of the night! The track is bicycles only – walking is also no problem. Other works include extensive topdressing and the oval lighting. I am now focussing time and energy on the nature-based playground which will be a first for the coast. The Council has a grant application sitting with the Federal Government seeking funding towards this exciting playground and it would help to bring forward the work if we are successful.

Animal registration renewals easier

Council has introduced changes to make it quicker and easier for residents to renew their pets’ registration and encourage responsible pet ownership. The new annual registration period for cats and dogs will start on October 1 of each year and extend to September 30 the following year. Pet owners will now also be able to notify Council of any changes to their pets’ information over the Internet via a form on Council's website. Glasshouse Country Festival June 4 - 10 2011

Festival Co-ordinator Bob McLean

Hello Friends Work is now underway to create the biggest Queensland Week celebrations the Glasshouse Country has ever seen. A committee of enthusiasticJune locals 4 has been - 10 2011 formed to create the Glasshouse Country Festival, from Saturday, June 4 – Friday, June 10. The idea is an initiative of the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains with the goal being to bring t a range of community groups and organisations together to organise their own individual event during this week as part of a larger celebration. The individual activities / events will reflect the unique environment, heritage, culture, commercial activities and sporting talents of our local community and will coincide with Queensland Week. The idea of linking the celebration to Queensland Week is in the hope that the committee will be able to access government funding. The funding will be able to be used to promote the event through-out our area, across the coast and to the vast number of tourists who make their way to the area at this time of the year. Our funding application has been submitted, thanks to the efforts of Julie Walton who has put together a professional document that will hopefully impress those making the decision of where funding should go. There has been plenty of ideas and suggestions for events including school concerts, independent artist’s exhibitions, indigenous dreaming storytelling / dance workshops, heritage trail tour / farmers markets / adventure, botanical trail walks and rides, along with a Recycling Open Day / Resource and Recycle Centre Tours. One event that has been confirmed is that of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce who will run a Business Awards Dinner on the final night of the festival. They plan to serve a menu featuring the amazing local produce from Glasshouse Country and they will be keen to showcase the business talents of our local economy. A committee has been formed who are happy to contribute their time to create a festival that draws our broader community together and shares the secret that we all know about living in Glasshouse Country that it is a truly special place. To keep everyone informed as details are finalised, I will be doing a monthly column for inclusion in the Glasshouse Country News, so keep a look out for it. If you are part of a group that would like to become involved in our event please send me an email on info@glasshousecountryfestival. com.au or give me a call on? Bullockies

The early timber-getters relied heavily on bullock teams to transport felled logs out of the scrub. Bullockies like Charles and young Jack Ferris, Isaac Burgess and son William of Mellum Creek, and the Grigor boys, John and William Jnr, were local masters of the art. Aged in his nineties, Jack Ferris recalled taking over his father’s second bullock team at age 14. On hilly country he worked a team of 24 bullocks but by the 1930’s, the worsening depression had halted the demand for timber and Jack could no longer afford to feed his bullocks. Up to this time bullock teams were a common sight on the Blackall Range and surrounding hinterland. When controlling a bullock team, understanding how and when to use a whip was extremely important in keeping individual bullocks working honestly. A bullock driver’s whip usually consisted of a wooden handle six to seven feet long and an eight foot plaited lash. Generally, he used the whip to indicate his intentions. The bullocky walked on the near side of the team and, with the length of his whip plus his arm, had an effective range of 16 to 18 feet forward and backward. As each yoke of bullocks spanned eight feet, seven yokes of bullocks (fourteen bullocks) covered 56 feet. Bullockies therefore had to keep moving backwards and forwards along the team. Usually the better, more honest pullers, were placed on the offside so the driver was closer to the less reliable animals. Sometimes an assistant worked on the off side, thus the term ‘offsider’. Ultimately the tractor and the railway gradually elbowed the bullocky out of the transportation business. If you enjoy local history and would like to assist the volunteers as well as learn new skills in a friendly environment, come along to the house on a Wednesday and meet the volunteers. Out & about in Glasshouse country Ride for Chappy 2010

Contributed by Mike Turner (Beerwah High Chaplain) On Saturday August 28, the second ‘Ride for Chappy’ was held. The ride began at the front of the high school, for registration and a gorgeous breakfast of bacon and egg muffins and coffee served up by the staff at Westpac Bank, Beerwah. Once underway, the bikes weaved their way up through Peachester, onto Kilcoy before stopping for morning tea on the banks of the Somerset Dam. From there we headed on

to Toogoolawah, back through Kilcoy towards Caboolture and then back down Steve Irwin Way to the Uniting Church. As is our tradition now, all the bikers ride in the front door and out the back door as a bit of a novelty. The Westpac guys were ready with a BBQ lunch for all the hungry riders. I want to thank Jamie and Lisa Kerr for putting on a fantastic event again this year. Over $2,800 was raised for our chaplaincy. Thanks again to all the riders and volunteers who came out to get involved in this ride. Hope to see you in 2011 at the next instalment of Ride for Chappy!

though, want to argue that that there can be no God because of all the suffering in the world. If God is a loving God why is there so much suffering in the world? This is a reasonable question? A barber had used this type of logic to convince one of his clients that there was no God. The client did not respond but quietly left the barber shop. As he left the barber shop he saw a man with long hair that had not seen a comb for some years and a beard that had not been trimmed for even more years. He walked back into the barber shop and said to the barber, “You know barbers do not exist.” The barber was quick to say, “Of course there are barbers. I’m here.” The customer’s response was just as quick, “Barber’s don’t exist because if they did, there would not be people outside with long uncut hair and untrimmed beards like the man I just saw.” “Ah,” the barber said, “That is what happens when people don’t come to me.” “Exactly!” replied the client, “God does exist! God only fails to exist when people do not come in to be with God and live in God’s love.”

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

A man who I would describe as a Spiritual father of mine has written a simple statement of what he believes about life. He is a man of big stature, he is now a wise man of advanced years but, above all, he is a man of great humility. In his statement, he talks about Creation and how in Creation he sees a Power that is greater than he is but a Power that he can trust in. He believes that this Power is the Spirit that created the Universe. He has a belief in the person of Jesus whose Spirit of love lives on in people who are able to lose their lives in the service of others. He further says that this Spirit of love enables ordinary people to do things that are extraordinary. He concludes his statement with these words, ‘Therefore, I am called to love recklessly, forgive instantly, be thankful in all things and thus be able to recognise the Spiritual dimension in human life’. I like his statement but I know that it is not perfect as is the case with any statement we want to make about God. For me God is a reality who loves me and gives me life. Some people

support young people attending the Maleny Flexi School. Mentors who volunteer range in age from 19 to 89 years and come from all walks of life. They require no specific profile or set of skills, but rather are people from diverse backgrounds with a range of expertise. If you are aged 18 years or over, have two hours a week spare and want to give back to your community, call 5442 4277.

can expect to retrieve from government rebates. In fact, in the last couple of weeks the value of RECS (renewable energy certificates) has dropped by $7.00 each. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you consider an average 1.5KW system attracts around 150 of them, it adds up to a drop in the rebate of $850.00 that could have been expected only a few weeks ago. So I can advise on timing the install to best effect for rebates based on market information.

As well as the usual range of electrical services and the installation of air conditioners, I am now fully licensed and accredited to design and install solar power systems. I am happy to advise customers on exactly what products are out there, and the best scenario to suit their needs. Being a local, I take pride in my work, and my customers can be assured they are dealing with a trusted, experienced tradesman.

Why should readers give you a call?

I am now a fully qualified designer and installer of solar grid systems. The solar industry at present is quite volatile and it pays to be fully informed, particularly regarding what people

News in brief

Snakes come out for Spring

Snakes are waking up with the onset of warmer weather and Queenslanders are being reminded to be on the alert both indoors and when out and about. Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones said there were sensible precautions people could take to reduce the chances of coming into contact with snakes. She said several species were common in Queensland and all played an important ecological role. The important thing to remember if you see a snake is to give it a wide berth and not threaten or provoke it. Most people bitten by snakes have threatened the snake by interfering with it or trying to kill it. If left alone for a period, the snake will move on. Absolutely fabulous If you’re going to live in Queensland, why not live in a Queenslander, especially if you’re looking for over six acres with a home that has been lovingly restored and now exceeds its former glory, with the addition of a few modern day creature comforts. The original character, of which there is ample, has been rejuvenated to create a home that has a warm feel and an abundance of natural light that filters into the rooms through the timber windows and French doors. Follow the polished timber floors as you make your way from the formal entry to the rear of the house which leads out to a private, covered deck, which in turn leads to the inground, saltwater pool. Along the way, you will take in features such as 10’ ceilings, a wood burner to take the chill out of the winter nights, reverse cycle air conditioning, a renovated bathroom resplendent with claw foot bath and one glance at the kitchen will be enough to satisfy the resident chef. The land which is a smidgen under 6.5 acres and would be approximately 50% clear, is fully fenced and has two paddocks separated by a natural gully which leads to a dam. The size of the land

allows you to have a few horses and keeps the neighbours very much at bay. There is a 9m X 6m colourbond shed that has power, lights and phone along with high clearance doors at each end. The carport attached to the front of the shed is also high clearance, as an added bonus there is a separate workshop with power and lights and located by the pool, making it a great change room or possible studio. With everything this unique property has to offer, you will find it hard to match its value in this part of the world. An inspection is a must as a drive by will not do this property justice. Priced at $659,000, contact agent Matthew Guillemet, SCR Mooloolah, phone 5492 9977, 0437 230 011.

Affordable dual living Looking for dual living? Then your search ends here! This fully renovated property boasts two separate fully self contained residences, each with their own kitchens, bathrooms and

All this and much more, situated on a level fully fenced 1/4 block and located within easy walking distance to shops, school and rail link. A Sustainability Declaration Form is available upon request. Mooloolah, four bed, two bath, three car, $460,000. Contact agent Ben Guillemet 0414 807 821, 5492 9977

Get up and grow

with Jade King

Emerging from hibernation

Spring is in the air and the days are warming up. Slowly, we start coming out of our winter lethargy and, with renewed energy, we get stuck into all the little things that have been neglected in the home garden. I’m not sure if I’m the only one who feels this way, but I personally am getting very active in my garden and luckily, because I have a mountain of things to do! Foremost, I need to build up my garden beds, mulch, save my winter seeds and of course do some spring planting. Growing healthy organic vegetables obviously takes a good supply of nutrients. So when building up my garden beds, I look to sourcing loads of animal manure which is one of the best and cheapest ways to provide nutrients. When considering nutrient value, my favourite drop, so to speak, is chook manure (N:P:K 2:1.8:1.8), closely followed by sheep (1:0.3:0.4) and horse (0.7:0.3:0.6) manure. However, my choice like most people's is often dictated by availability and not the nutrient content of the manure. Irrespective of what manure is used, nutrients are being added and when combined with compost and Lucerne mulch, the garden will have a mass of slow-release nutrients available throughout spring and summer. All that will be required is side dressings of blood and bone and liquid feeds at key times throughout the vegetables' development. It is also an ideal time to get in and mulch around your veggies with mulch that is readily broken down, like Lucerne or straw. The warmer weather in spring speeds up the composting

process so that any mulch added now will increase the organic matter, nutrient availability and maintain the soil moisture. Being the end of the season, I am keenly collecting seeds of the vegetables I have kept for this purpose, namely broccoli, peas and beans to plant next year. Being self-pollinated, pea and bean seeds are very easy to collect and simply need to be left on the vine until the pods are fat and dry before packaging. Saving seeds from brassica plants involves a little more consideration as bees can easily cross-pollinate from one to another, such as cabbage with cauliflower. However, I avoided this by spacing out my seed saving, starting with my broccoli which is ready to be harvested for seed now, and then allowing my cauliflower to go to flower after. I love making our own little seed packets to store them in with the kids. They are wonderful little artists, but I do ensure I write all the details on the back just in case I can't quite identify the vegetable from their pictures. Finally, I am rampantly planting in all the summer vegetables with the intention of having a heap of fresh salad vegetables to pick to go with all the outdoor BBQ’s I plan to enjoy in the back yard this summer. Red, yellow and pink cherry tomatoes, crispy cucumber, pickled beetroot, carrot sticks, juicy corn and capsicum on a bed of lettuce leaves, all straight from the backyard! I hope everyone enjoys their own fresh produce and gets the pleasure of sharing it with friends and family over the coming months. Until next month in ‘Get Up and Grow’.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by Trevor Bertram

The final of the Ladies’ B Grade Singles Championship on Wednesday morning resulted in Margaret Lehmann defeating Di Garland in a well played match. Congratulations Margaret, our 2010 Club Champion. It is good to see more bowlers, both men and ladies, supporting Ladies’ Day with social games of triples and pairs being played. More players are most welcome of a Wednesday morning. Prizes are “out of the hat” so everyone has a chance of winning. Bede Burton and Jack Timm won Thursday’s Open Pairs on a count-back from Lindsay Henderson and Trevor Bertram, both teams having 2 wins plus a margin of 17. The runnersup were Di Hunt and Rae Farrell with a highest margin of 16 in the second game. Round 6 of the Pennant Championship was

played on Saturday with Division 2 defeating Narangba 66 to 38, Division 4 defeating Bongaree 41 to 33, and Division 5 going down 39 to 50 to Caboolture Memorial. In Round 7 next Saturday, September 11, Div 2 plays Bongaree (away), Div 4 plays Solander Lake (at home) and Div 5 plays Woodford (away). Div 5 is to assemble at the Club at 11.40am prior to departure. Coming Events: 9.00am Monday, September 20, Strawberry Fair, Optional Mixed Fours. Saturday and Sunday, October 16 and 17, Glasshouse Mixed Fours Carnival with $1000 in prize money for 5 rounds of 15 ends over two days.

Beerwah Bulldogs grand finalists Beerwah Bulldogs under 12 have made it through to the Grand Final this weekend on Saturday, September 11. Congratulations boys we are all very proud of you! The boys finished the season minor premiers, with only one loss and one draw; this has been a fantastic season for the boys, who are trained by our local butcher, Top Shop Meats, Andrew Stevens. Our semi was played last Friday night against Kawana Grey, and after an 18 all draw at full time, we went into heart stopping, nail bitting extra time!!! With only a few minutes to go and in the lead at 24-18, Kawana snuck in for a try making the score 24-22 with the kick to go! Lucky for us Kawana missed the kick and we came away with the win!!!! We now wait to find out who will be or opponents, either Kawana Grey or Stanley Rivers. Everyone at the club wishes the boys all the luck and in the world, we are all very proud for your teamwork, your enthusiasm, your hard work and most of all your BULLDOGS PRIDE!!! So good luck and most of all have fun boys, win or lose you are all winners to us!!

New sports funding up for grabs Due to the overwhelming response to the first round of the Active Inclusion and Infrastructure sports funding programs, two special rounds of funding have been announced. “Not-for-profit community organisations, sport and recreation clubs, schools and councils can now apply for funding for healthy eating projects under the Active Inclusion program, and an extra round of Sports Infrastructure funding,” Sport Minister Phil Reeves said. “For this round of Active Inclusion, $4.2 million is available for a special ‘Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Category’ as well as the other sport and recreation categories from the first round. “Interested groups can apply for up to $50,000 by submitting an application up until October 15, 2010. “The focus on healthy eating is a joint initiative of the Department of Communities, Queensland Health and the Department of Education and Training to improve eating habits in local communities. Mr Reeves said funding for community projects and club support projects would also be available under the latest Active Inclusion Program round. Community Projects funding of up to $50,000 will be available for projects that increase access to sport and recreation, for individuals and groups facing barriers to participation within the community. Funds of up to $5,000 will be available for Club Support Projects that build clubs through education and training, recruiting and retaining volunteers and encouraging participation in sport and recreation in their community. This year’s first round of the Active Inclusion Program funding saw $4.581 million approved for 496 projects, including 420 club support projects and 76 community projects. Mr Reeves said in addition to the Active Inclusion program, sport and recreation clubs from across Queensland have been offered another opportunity to secure vital capital works funding. “A second round of Sports Infrastructure funding worth $8 million is being made available to those clubs and groups looking to build and improve amenities such as playing fields and lighting for ovals,” he said. “Interest in the first round of sport infrastructure funding has been simply amazing, with an unprecedented 626 applications requesting more than $80 million. “To address the unprecedented level of interest, I have approved an additional funding round of minor infrastructure projects to open on September 1, 2010, closing on October 1,2010. “Unsuccessful applicants will be considered in the next round of funding and are not required to resubmit their applications, however they can supply additional or updated information to support their applications.” Round one delivered $11.96 million in grant funding for 91 successful applicants. The Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Program is also planned to open during March 2011 for applications for minor, medium and major category projects.

0930 Court 1, Tibro Pearls v Meridan Hornets 0930 Court 3, Tibro Diamonds v Moffat beach Sharks 0930 Court 8, Tibro Jaspers v Maleny Bombers Tibro Tiger Eyes put up a good effort against Currimundi Lionesses. To come 3rd behind the 2 Currimundi teams, well done girls & Susan, be proud of your efforts. Tibro Garnets played a close game against the Golden Beach Tsunamis, with

the Tsunamis heading into the grand final. For the Garnets, this was their first year playing netball (unlike the other teams who played Netta A & B) you have improved each week and have done yourself, coach, parents and Tibro proud. We hope to see you all return next year to play for Tibro.

He asks what she is doing and she replies that she wanted to prove to him that not all blonde women are dumb, and she wanted to do it by painting the house. He then asks her why she has a parka over her leather jacket. She replied that she was reading the directions on the paint can and it said.... For best results, put on two coats.
