Over the past couple of years the members of what is now the Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce have been working together to create a strong regional voice for our business community. And at this year’s Annual General Meeting they were fortunate enough to have nominations for all of the committee positions except one – Secretary, although they are fortunate enough to have a Minutes’ secretary and currently some pretty enthusiastic other members sharing out the responsibilities of a secretary. And while there is a strong membership of over 70 local businesses, the time has now come to recruit someone from outside the group with the skills and time which (on average is three – four hours a week) to take on this vital role. Jan Kesby, the manager/coordinator of the Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare, was earlier this month one of 75 community representatives who attended a conference hosted by Council, designed to capture the community’s visions and values for the region. And it wasn’t a role she took lightly, having surveyed members of her local Mooloolah community prior to attending the conference to ensure she captured their views. Jan said she felt good about the role she played and the process behind developing a community plan for the Sunshine Coast. “As a community, it is really important to be able to have a say in council planning for the future,” she said. Jan said there were some important points raised by locals, who valued the village appeal of the hinterland and the rural residential atmosphere of Mooloolah. She said residents were concerned that the area would end up looking like just another suburb of a major city, and wanted to preserve its natural environment and quality of living. Residents wanted to ensure vast spaces were preserved for organised and non-organised recreation, as well as important native ecosystems, and more protection for native flora and fauna, Jan said.

Jan Kesby, the manager/ coordinator of the Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare She said the residents she surveyed, which did not include members of the Mooloolah Waterwatch and Landcare, didn’t want to see fast trains travelling through small towns, but rather better, more integrated transport options between the coast and hinterland towns. “Mooloolah residents are very passionate about their town, and it was important that I was able to attend the conference and share their views,” Jan said. The Community Conference, attended by 75 locals representing community, small business, industry and others was a key initiative as part of council’s development of a new community plan. According to Council, using all of the data gathered from previous phases, including market research and the community conference, Council will now develop a draft community plan before seeking public comment. Locals mark historic canonisation by Rosemary Hayes

On the same day that our very own Mary MacKillop was being canonised at the Vatican in Rome, here in Glasshouse Country, locals held their own special celebration to mark the historic occasion. The special day was hosted by Beerwah Catholic and Anglican Parishioners at the Mary MacKillop Centre on Sunday with Father Stan Griffiths and Reverend Avriel Green jointly presiding. Celebrations included song, scripture, prayer, a light lunch and afternoon tea. Jenny Carr composed a song about Mary MacKillop especially for the occasion. Pam Lever, community member of Beerwah Parish, said preparations for the event began a couple of months ago, with people excited about Mary MacKillop being Australia’s first recognised saint. “It’s a great thrill for someone like Mary MacKillop, who led a life that was extremely tough in many ways, but she never faltered in giving - particularly the needs of the poor. It was one of her main aims to bring education to the children of the poor. “Mary MacKillop is important to us because she had a mission in life and she knew that mission was more important than the authority of church and state around her and she never let opposition deter her from what she saw God wanted her to do. That resolute attitude to her life and her mission, I think, is something we can all take on board,” she said. The celebration was not just for the Churches but for all the community. “It is a big deal, particularly for Catholics; but I think Australians can celebrate the fact that this woman, who is part of our heritage, has achieved great things and recognition in the worldwide church outside Australia,” Pam said. The main aim of the celebration was to bring the community together. “The spirit of Mary MacKillop is very much one of community focus. Any celebration in the name of Mary MacKillop should have a community wide focus to it, otherwise it wouldn’t be truly in the spirit of Mary MacKillop. Wherever she saw a need then she would respond to that need if she was to carry out what she saw as her vocation, her mission from God.” People across the world would agree with Pam when she says that Mary MacKillop was inspirational. “That somebody, in spite of a lot of adversity could still achieve great things, that’s encouraging for us all.”

Local excellence in teaching Two local teachers have been recognised for their outstanding qualities in the recent NEiTA 2010 ASG Inspirational Teaching Awards. Lauren Loft, a Year five teacher at Glasshouse Country Christian College and Mark Windrow, Principal of Landsborough State School are two of 550 finalists from across Australia. Queensland had the majority of finalists with an impressive

177 being recognised. The awards are a way to acknowledge and celebrate great teachers. Lauren has been a teacher for seven years, all at Glasshouse Country Christian College. “I didn’t know about the nomination until my Principal told me and the nomination came through. I was surprised, very honoured and excited. I appreciate the way that someone has appreciated the work that I’m doing,” Lauren said. As a teacher Lauren recognises each child’s individuality. “I feel that every child learns in a particular and unique way and as I teach I try to appreciate the students’ different learning needs and try to meet them in the different aspects of teaching.” What she most enjoys about teaching is the children. “Seeing them learn, seeing them understand things, seeing them grow throughout the year. Because I’ve been here for seven years the children who I had in Year three are now going into year 10 next year and that’s really exciting to see how much they have developed and grown,” she said. Mark Winrow, has been a teacher for 12 years, principal of Landsborough State School for a year, and was previously Head of Curriculum for two years. He also lists the children as the thing he most enjoys about teaching.

“Just sitting down and having conversations with kids. I think the biggest thing I get out of it is those ‘ah-ha’ moments when kids have just worked something out, when the penny drops for them.” Like Lauren, Mark’s nomination for the award was a surprise. “First I knew about the nomination was when I received the certificate on parade that the P and C gave to me. I suppose I’m fairly humbled by it to be honest. I honestly believe that the staff at this school make me look better than I am. I couldn’t do this job, this way, without their support and the support of the community too. We’ve got a great P and C and supportive parents.” Mark said he has a passion for student learning and a passion for child development as a whole. “I really like to take a genuine interest in what kids are doing outside of school as well as what they’re doing in school. If the kids are happy to be here we know we’re doing our job well.” Mark and Lauren will now progress to the next phase of the awards, the NEiTA 2010 ASG State and Territory Inspirational Teaching Awards, where 60 award recipients will be selected and announced in November following World Teacher’s Day. Early next year, 10 will be selected as the NEiTA 2010 ASG National Teaching Award recipients.

Project 4519 might sound like some secret government agenda but it’s actually an undertaking by the 2010 Student Leadership team of Beerwah State High School. Andrew Perryman, School Captain and project co-ordinator explains. “At the end of last year the school decided to invest money in the leadership courses through an organisation called YLead. They came to our school and did workshops. From that, 20 student leaders were offered the opportunity to attend other YLead Student Leadership events to build leadership skills.” Project 4519 is an endeavour across three fronts, the school, local and global communities; with three broad goals, to encourage school pride and school spirit, raise the profile of Beerwah SHS within the local community, and create opportunities for Beerwah students to make a difference. Andrew said Project’s name derives from the postcode 4519, which encompasses not just the school but the wider Beerwah community. There have been many activities undertaken throughout the year as part of Top ProjectGrade 4519. These include a ‘Clean Up Beerwah’ afternoon, holding events at the school that the community was also invited along to, such as the school musical ‘Man of Steel’, and a community movie night. Other projects included a student Ambassador’s project, (where Year 11 and 2kg lots Year 12 students volunteered to assist in the classrooms of the seven local primary schools on

All these activities would have taken a lot of preparation, time and effort, so why did the Student Leadership team want to make a difference? “It had a lot to do with the YLead workshops, we were inspired. Beerwah is known as a ‘sports’ school and we wanted to build other things the school can be proud of. We decided we wanted to make a difference and leave a legacy. It’s definitely been a team effort,” Andrew said.

Performers roar all the way to London Slice of Life Theatre Arts students are set to roar all the way to London with their production of the classic CS Lewis children’s tale, ‘The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’ on Friday, November 5. Fifteen cast and seven stage and technical crew ranging in age from eight to 15 and adults will be assessed by Trinity London examiner Carol Lamont, for a Certificate Three in Plays in Production. They will show their high standard of performance and production skills as they act out the adventures of Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter as they seek the power of Aslan the Lion Prince in order to break free from the bitter cold evil that the self proclaimed Queen has imposed on the inhabitants of Narnia. The students have been rehearsing for months and they are ready to pounce on to the stage. Some students are so eager that they have taken on the challenge of learning two roles and will have the opportunity to perform over the scheduled five performances. Slice of Life Theatre Arts Director, Louise Heinrich, has been entering students in Speech and Drama Eisteddfods, Optiminds and Trinity London Speech and Drama exams over the past five years with great success. Four of the cast members will also present for other Trinity Exams before the Friday, November 5 evening performance. Students are proud of the fact that they are the first cast to enter the Plays in Production section in Australia which is a new initiative by Trinity London Guild Hall, the renowned London Acting College, to encourage performers to create

excellent full productions for live audiences in real theatres using sound, lighting costumes and props which is exactly what the cast and crew will do. They have been rehearsing on Monday afternoons in the Glasshouse Country Christian College’s, state of the art, 133 seat theatre built less than three years ago. Whilst they are excited about showing their talents and gifts to Carol Lamont from Trinity London, they are keen to ensure they have a live audience to perform in front of, so as part of the theatrical

production requirements, they are focusing on recruiting audience members from the Sunshine Coast community to buy tickets to support them in their quest to show how well they rate as performers on a world scale. There will be a total of five performances, with performances on Saturday, October 30 (matinee and evening), and Saturday, November 6 (matinee and evening). Local group celebrates rich and vibrant history Contributed by Coral Beutel, hon secretary

Monday, October 4, Peachester CWA celebrated their 65th birthday with lunch at Gowinta Farms. Long serving member and honorary secretary Coral Beutel, this week shares with readers some of the details of group’s rich and vibrant history. The inaugural meeting was held in the Peachester Hall on October 16, 1945, with 25 ladies present. Membership was 5/- or 50 cents. Gladys Turner was the first president, Mabel Breton was secretary and May Loveday was the treasurer. Many members walked to meetings pushing a pram, carrying craft work, produce for the ‘bring and buy’ stall and a cake for lunch. Some rode a horse with a child on board. Before the branch could hold the first dance in 1946, permission from the department of justice had to be granted so the ladies could raffle a cake and the dance had to be registered with the taxation department. The ladies were told to only bring home-made cakes. The first project was to renovate the old disused tennis court near the dip. For 30 years they ran dances and helped the hall to hold their dances. Funds were raised for the student hostel in Nambour, which enabled students to pursue their secondary studies. When the hostel was sold, with the money refunded, the CWA sealed the supper room at the hall. In 1952 with electricity coming to the hall the ladies purchased an urn which is still in use today. A far cry from the kerosene tin billy out the back. Also provided for the hall were chairs, the piano, floor coverings for the supper room, cupboards and the ramp to give access to the hall for the disabled. From 1948 bursaries were given to students sitting for scholarship from Crohamhurst, Peachester and Commissioner’s Flat schools. To this day, two bursaries are still being presented to students from Peachester State School on graduation night. Nessie Pratten was the first international officer in 1953. Pupils were invited to listen to the guest speaker on international day. Statewide, CWA study a different country each year. The Peachester School has entered the international poster and project competitions every year since, with some entries going on to state finals. The wonderful ladies who started CWA in Peachester would be proud of the members to this day and their achievements. Mary (Sully) Sullivan joined 1949 and later received her service bar, year of the aged person’s award and volunteer award. Nessie Pratton, also a great handicraft enthusiast, has a piece of lace she made on display in Canberra. Grace Hodgens also received a service bar for her commitment to CWA and the community. These are just a couple of ladies out of many who have excelled. Margaret Ferris is well known for her expertise in floral arrangements and stage decorations. She has carried her floral art forward to become a judge worldwide. Bev Wild was on the state knitting and crochet committee for 25 years, chairman and secretary for two terms and was Nambour North Coast division secretary for six years and has held all positions in Peachester CWA many times. Bev is our present treasurer, and Joan Kropp has been making and icing the

Peachester CWA celebrated their 65th birthday with lunch at Gowinta Farms birthday cakes since 1960. She has held the positions of president and treasurer and is the present president. Joan excels as a cook. Pam Walker has held the positions of president and secretary and with husband Howard handle the hall bookings. Coral Beutel, secretary has held president and international officer. She also has done well with floral art and cooking. New members are helping to carry on the values set by our predecessors and we are proud of them. The state cookery contest started in 1960 when membership stood at 32 and competition was strong. In 1975 Robyn Simpson was asked to judge and carried on this task until her passing. From 1978 Robyn was ably assisted by Margaret Wild who is training her daughterin-law Sharon. Members presented with their 50 year service to CWA bar are Bev Wild, Pam Walker, Joan Kropp, Margaret Ferris, Nessie Pratten and Coral Beutel. Membership is 10 at the moment; interested ladies will be made most welcome. We pay tribute to the husbands for the help given throughout the years. Peachester CWA has run three garden parties, markets etc and are still catering for weddings, birthday parties graduations (small). Members have always attended state conferences. Our next big event is the Christmas markets in the Peachester Hall on Saturday, November 27.

Glasshouse’s very own rising star, actor Daniel George, is hosting a trivia night later this month to raise funds for his first film production, Levasque. GCNews readers will be well aware of the achievements of this talented young actor, who has just recently completed filming the second series of a new series, Shifters. Local couple celebrates 65 years Congratulations to Con and Ray Mansell, both 83, who today celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary (October 20). Con, who was born in London, and Ray, who was born in Mullumbimby, were both serving in the British Navy during the war when they met at a Naval Air Station at Oxfordshire. They married in 1945. After a few twists and turns, which included Con coming to Australia (without Ray as he was still in the Navy) as a war bride and then returning to London, they both eventually came to Australia in 1961. They came as ‘10 pound poms’, (even though Ray was Australian born and bred) with their five children and they later had one more child. Initially they settled in Petrie then they moved to Beerwah 22 years ago. After leaving the Navy, Ray had various jobs. He was a fireman, ran a nursery and became a surveyor with the Commonwealth Government, while Con dedicated herself to their family. Spend any amount of time with them and it’s easy to see their marriage has been filled with laughter. Con also has this tip for a long happy marriage. “Choose the right partner, I guess.” To Ray, the secret is more pragmatic. “You make a vow when you get married and if you stick to your vows and you live long enough you get to 65 years of married life, it’s as simple as that,” he said. Their celebrations will be a quiet affair. “We had big party for our 60th, we had the whole mob here, there’s 40 descendants,” Con said.

They will be opening a bottle of Moet though. No doubt they will be toasting their six children, 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren because to Con and Ray their family has been the highlight of their 65 years of marriage.

Road safety campaign will help save lives Sunshine Coast Council has launched its ‘Share with Care’ road safety campaign to help reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on Sunshine Coast roads. Integrated Transport Portfolio holder Councillor Vivien Griffin said pedestrians and cyclists make up over 10 per cent of the serious road casualties in the region - most involve a collision with a motor vehicle and nearly all are preventable. “With new cycle infrastructure coming online across the Coast, educating road users how to use it is essential for their safety,” Cr Griffin said “There are different rules from state to state so whether it’s a green cycle lane or a new pathway, users will need to be aware of the rules. “Rolling out this education campaign in line with new infrastructure will hopefully result in safer roads, which in turn might encourage more people to leave the car at home.” The local campaign kicked off with a message that has been widely promoted by the cycling safety charity,—a metre matters. It’s a simple but important first message in the campaign. It involves motor vehicles leaving one metre between themselves and cyclists and if it’s not safe to pass a cyclist, to brake and wait. Key rules for road users • A white symbol in a bike lane means this is for the exclusive use of cyclists; motor vehicles can only enter these lanes when turning. • A yellow symbol indicates a shared area; in these areas it is very important that drivers wait until there is sufficient room to pass. • Green paint on the road highlights areas of potential conflict between cyclists and motor vehicles, often used at entries and exits of intersections and roundabouts and across slip lanes. • Riders should be considerate of drivers when choosing to cycle two abreast, they should indicate clearly and make sure they are visible. • Motorists should leave at least one metre between the side of their vehicle and cyclists and if this is not possible, brake and wait. • Motorists should always indicate correctly, and check blind spots before manoeuvring. • Pathways are shared areas, cyclists need to make sure they are riding at an appropriate speed, should install a bell and warn pedestrians when they are coming. • Everyone needs to keep to the left on pathways and pedestrians should take care not to block the path. The ‘Share with Care’ campaign will address four elements of road safety 1. A meter matters – in partnership with the Amy Gillett Foundation 2. Bicycle lanes and Green cycle lanes 3. Just when most of us had become accustomed to the term ‘El Niño’, weather forecasters have now started throwing the term ‘La Niña’ around, but what does this mean? To most strawberry growers it means destruction caused by an all mighty lot of rain. Meteorologists explain it a little differently. Firstly, La Niña translates from Spanish as ‘the girl-child’, and refers to the extensive cooling of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, where as El Niño warms. In Australia (particularly eastern Australia), La Niña events are associated with increased probability of wetter conditions. Changes to the atmosphere and ocean circulation during La Niña events include: • Cooler than normal ocean temperatures across the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean • Increased convection or cloudiness over tropical Australia, Papua NewGuinea, and Indonesia. • Stronger than normal (easterly) trade winds across the Pacific Ocean (but not necessarily in the Australian region). • High (positive) values of the SOI (Southern Oscillation Index) Last week’s heavy down pours saw approximately 80 tonnes of strawberries ruined at Gowinta Farms, however after a week long clean up of crops, the La Niña weather patterns may just mean that cooler weather will see a record long strawberry season until Christmas.

Story-telling in the library, kicking a soccer ball around, listening to a student’s woes, saying a prayer to launch the week – it’s all in a day’s work for the new Campus Minister at Unity College. Phil Smith has been appointed to the staff as Campus Minister, part-time, representing the Uniting Church at this ecumenical school. “You mean ‘the’ Phil Smith?” said one parent when the appointment was announced. And yes, indeed it is! Phil is a journalist and radio announcer who hosts the Breakfast Show on the ABC on Saturday mornings. His position at Unity College is part-time and allows space for him to pursue his other interests as well. An Elder and Lay Preacher at the Pine Rivers Uniting Church, Phil has a passion for working with people, especially young people, and is settling in quickly to his new role. “It’s been a fast-track start,” he said. “When the prep boys asked, ‘Pastor Phil! You wanna play Kikken?’ I thought it was a Swedish team game, but it was only kickin’ a soccer ball around. What a great way to get to know the kids.” Members of the Unity College Leadership Team attended Phil’s commissioning service at the Caloundra Uniting Church and are very supportive of him in this role. “Pastor Phil’, as he is known by the students, is already working well with his Catholic counterpart, John Manion, and has lots of ideas for ongoing projects in the future. The College community along with the local Uniting and Catholic churches welcomes Phil and wishes him well.

Queensland’s commercial growers and backyard gardeners are being urged to take part in a bee pollination survey to help fight a serious pest. Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland Tim Mulherin said the Small Hive Beetle had become endemic throughout most of eastern Queensland, where it had destroyed many beehives in the last two years. “With two in every three mouthfuls of food needing pollination by agents such as the honeybee, we are keen to gather data to accurately assess the wider impact this pest might be having on our food production,” the Minister said. “Without pollination our food supply chain would effectively collapse. “This would have drastic ramifications for Queensland’s economy with one in eight jobs in the Queensland workforce either partially or entirely supported by the agricultural supply chain, which equates to more than a quarter of a million Queensland jobs in the food supply chain which would be affected. An online survey in October and November will provide scientists and industry groups with a clearer picture of the indirect but wider damage being done by the Small Hive Beetle. The survey will ask target groups what they grow, whether they have noticed a decrease in the number of bees and/or in their yields in recent years. Researchers are particularly interested to hear from people who had vegetable patches in their backyards. “There are thousands of backyard vegetable patches throughout eastern Queensland,” Mr Mulherin said. “Declining yields don’t just affect big producers and many people with vegetable patches might not be aware of the important role bees play in pollination. “Many backyard vegetable growers mightn’t know their plants aren’t producing fruit, or the fruit died on the vine because the flowers weren’t pollinated. “Some people with vegetable patches might’ve noticed a decrease in yields over the past two years in common produce such as zucchini, squash and pumpkins. “We also want to hear from people who routinely self pollinate their vegetables, or those who have started self pollination. The contributions for our next anthology continue to attract much interest. Paul Steven’s work ‘Tears from a broken leg’, tells of the misfortune of a man who, after falling from a cliff and not being found for three days, has time to review his life despite battling great physical pain. Steve Paparis contribution, ‘Taxi’, was a departure from his usual style. The story had a wry twist at its conclusion that kept all present smiling. Betty Graham-Higgs related a graphic story, ‘Earthquake’. With her vivid detail of the event which occurred in Kingston, Jamaica in 1907, her telling of this happening stunned the meeting. Kate Wright again delighted the group with a charming gypsy story – ‘the opal ring’. Along with her other academic achievements, Kate holds an honours degree in communication, majoring in philosophy of culture and writing. John Wright’s contribution, ‘Paying the price’, warned of the consequence of consuming blue vein cheese and ice cream before going to bed. To describe it as hilarious would be an understatement! Award winning artist Chris Blake of Landsborough was the very first painting demonstrator at the inaugural Pastel Society of Australia Sunshine Coast meeting held at Sunshine Coast Art Group Buderim Art rooms on October 12. Chris chose the theme of ‘An Urban Scene’ for his demonstration. This was an educational and very entertaining demonstration with an extremely vibrant picture resulting. Attendees networked, socialised and went away with new tips and techniques to try in their own artwork as well as viewing and testing some Artwork by Una Robinson newer pastel art supplies that were on display. This group will cater for pastel artists residing on the Sunshine Coast area and will provide professional training by Master Pastellists, education, critiques and opportunities for exhibiting in at least two Pastel Society run art competitions each year. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, 7.00pm – 9.00pm at SCAG art rooms, Buderim. Local phone users are advised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the Australian Communications and Media Authority to hang up immediately if suspicious callers start demanding personal and banking information. The ACCC and the ACMA warn that scammers attempt to, and often succeed, in deceiving people into giving out sensitive personal details that can later be used to the scammers’ advantage. The number of complaints to these organisations about scam callers has risen in the past two months from 200 per month to some 2,000 per month. The scams doing the rounds presently include: callers advising that the person’s computer is infected with a virus and requesting credit card details to fix the problem; callers offering products, services or cash under fake government grants; callers seeking bank details in order to process a bank fee refund or tax refund; callers offering to place the person’s number on the Do Not Call Register for a fee; and recorded messages asking consumers to ‘dial 9’ for a ‘free’ holiday. Men’s health

It’s important that all men are aware of the unique health risks that can actually lead to them dying earlier than their female counterparts. It’s worthy to note that life expectancy for Australian males is 79 years, compared to 83 for women. Figures show that the leading causes of death in men are heart disease, some forms of cancer, and stroke. On top of that, research shows that men, especially those who are younger, are more likely to drink alcohol at dangerous levels, use illicit drugs, and to drive dangerously. I urge all men to consider their health and make it a top priority to visit their doctor for regular check-ups.

Thank you to the many members of the community that have contacted my office regarding the Labor Government’s decision on Caloundra South. Concerns raised include, but aren’t limited to: the need for urgent infrastructure if such a rushed development is to proceed, specifically the rail corridor to the coast and the hospital; environmental impacts on the Pumicestone Passage; and, the removal of such an important development from local government oversight. I will be raising these concerns with my parliamentary colleagues and raising them in Parliament when we sit next week. A piece of positive news for workers from the last sitting week was the announcement that under the Holidays Amendment Bill 2010 people who work on Christmas Day this year and New Year’s Day 2011 will be entitled to receive penalty rates. The government has made this decision after workers outlined to the government how the existing arrangements disadvantage many people. The Carers (Recognition) Amendment Bill was also debated and I had the chance to acknowledge and applaud a sector of our community who freely invest their time, money and effort into the development and care of their loved ones. Policelink

You may have already heard people talking about Policelink so I just wanted to make it a little clearer what this initiative is all about. Policelink has been set up to deal with non-urgent policing matters and is staffed by over 370 employees with a mix of police officers and specially trained individuals. It is amazing to think that of the 450,000 calls to Triple Zero each year, only four per cent of these are urgent. It certainly makes more sense for these urgent calls to have their own dedicated number and that they are dealt with in the fastest time possible. Next time you need to make a call to the police, just think how urgent the call is and whether you might be able to refer the matter to Policelink. The number for the contact centre is 131 444.

Earlier this financial year I announced that $480K had been secured in the budget for the upgrade of the Mt Mellum Road Intersection. My office has received a number of enquiries seeking an update on this project. The design is 90 per cent complete, and construction is planned to take place from January – March 2011, weather permitting. We are proposing to change the intersection to a T intersection, as this will provide a much safer road for the residents. Once I have the design I am more than happy to meet with residents to run through the proposal. The White Cedar Tree next to the playground in the Art Centre Park, GlassHouse Mountains, will be removed as soon as possible. We are removing the tree for safety reasons, as the berries from the White Cedar are poisonous to children.

Fullertons Road, Glasshouse Mountains - widening and sealing

Council will be undertaking works to widen and seal a section of Fullertons Road, Glasshouse Mountains. In order to improve traffic safety and facilitate quick construction Council intends to close Fullertons Road at the construction site. Detour signs will be in place for the duration of the project. Traffic can detour the site via Coonowrin Road. Mt Ngungun car park will remain open.

Our Place Our Future, the next phase

Late last year, the Coast community had their say on a series of discussion papers and strategies that will help shape the future of the Sunshine Coast by informing the Planning Scheme and a whole range of other strategic policy documents. One year on, council has used the feedback to bring these and other documents one step closer to being finalisedI invite you to review the documents you are interested in, and let council know your thoughts. There will be staffed roadshows at all council libraries, and copies of each document are now available on council’s website. Submissions close at 4.00pm on Monday, November 8. The roadshow will be at the Beerwah Library on Tuesday, October 26, 3.00pm – 6.00pm, Peachester Road, Beerwah.

Stolen or damaged waste bins can now be reported via an online form on Sunshine Coast Council website. This makes it easier and more convenient for residents to order replacement waste bins or report damage to their waste bins. Damage to waste bins such as broken wheels, hinges or bin lids can be reported via this service. All residents then need to do is place their damaged waste bin on the kerbside and continue to use the bin as normal until replaced or repaired by council’s contractor. For more information about Waste and Recycling visit council’s website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au Council has strongly supported the preservation of keeping the existing individual Show public holiday for Pomona, Maleny and Nambour which will allow the associations to not only forward plan, but help retain their local identities. The Qld Chamber of Agriculture Societies is currently undertaking an economic study around the financial benefits that these events bring to the local economy. I am please to note that since amalgamation, State Government supports rural areas in holding separate events to showcase their own uniqueness.

Backgrounds such as this allow the discerning photographer to compose images which will become family favourites. The backlight throws a lovely, soft light on the subject, shining through the hair and white sleeve while fill flash directs light into the face to fill the shadow areas. The eye of the viewer is taken from the lower left by the line of the lightly coloured sand to the model. Careful placement of the model by the tree allows plenty of space in front of her. The darkness of the tree stops the eye of the viewer from leaving the image, and brings it back in to the image, to the freshness of the foliage on the overhanging branches so that she appears to be encircled by a natural frame. Taken in 1993 on negative film, this image has been scanned, digitised and enhanced in Photoshop.

Of love and war keeps home fires burning at State Library

The excitement of blossoming romance, the pain of separation and the great joys of reunion are captured in a special travelling Herald photographer, exhibition opening on Friday, November 6 Melbourne, March 23, at the State Library of Queensland - the first 1943, AWM 138252 venue on the exhibition’s national tour. Of love and war, shows relationships forged during times of conflict, the passionate affairs and whirlwind weddings of lovers caught up in war, and the loneliness of those serving away from home – and those they left behind. The exhibition covers World War I and World War II, as well as Vietnam and more recent conflicts. Exhibition curator Rebecca Britt said the intensity of love amid times of war created a sense of urgency for some, with some couples defying convention and an uncertain future and marrying within days or weeks of meeting. Others were more cautious and put passion on hold, but treasured the keepsakes from a lover, such as letters, gifts and photographs. Visitors to the exhibition will see wedding dresses worn by war brides; posters of pin-up girls, and works of art that captures instances of love amid conflict. ‘Of love and war’ is on display at slq Gallery level 2, State Library of Queensland from Saturday, November 6 to Sunday, February 20, 2011. In April 2009 the state Government proudly opened the $298 million Caboolture-Beerburrum rail duplication. There is no doubt that the duplication has reduced rail congestion in the area and has been rejoiced by the freight customers. One of the selling points at the public information sessions and promotions was 'reduced travel times for passenger services'. Can you give any indication when passenger services will actually see this 'reduced travel time'? At present we are effectively still on the same fiveyear-old train timetable and passenger services need to waste time in order to 'keep behind' with the old timetable. Typically this entails waiting at Beerburrum and Elimbah stations so that the handful of passengers can safely clear the car park, or by waiting at Caboolture station for an extra few minutes so that the already full inbound service can be squeeze in more passengers. It seems such a waste to be on a train flying through the fantastic new rail lines, to then waste time twiddling your thumbs while gazing aimlessly at the pineapple crates beside the platform. Community consultation

The recent speed change on Old Peachester Road has come about from two complaints from residents of the road; one of which has already moved from the road. After speaking with several residents of Old Peachester Road, it appears the council has not consulted anyone on the road about the speed change. One of the main concerns is that Stirling Road, a privately owned road, has not been taken over by council as seven of the 10 road users want to happen, but the speed change (that only two residents want) is about to happen with no consultation whatsoever. The speed reduction in itself is a mistake, 70 for the whole stretch of road? Half is dirt and a quarter of it should be referred to as a ‘built up area’. A loaded gun

I am a driver and enjoy driving long distances on our country roads to see our wonderful country – along with many other people, and regularly travel between Nanango and Beerwah. I’m sure we all hope we will safely arrive at our destination. I am appalled though at the number of senseless tragedies I hear of almost daily where someone has been badly injured or lost their life. There were two big ones only last week – near Rockhampton and at Maryborough when vehicles had caught on fire, people dead or badly hurt. Police and ambulance drivers are also at risk every time they attend an accident. Families and friends are devastated and lives change forever. Why are there so many accidents? Weather, road conditions, alcohol, drugs, carelessness, speed, impatience, stupidity, inattention, youth, age, anger, frustration? Probably all of these in some form or another. My friend was waiting to use a public phone the other day and heard some teenagers bragging about how they had been doing 160kms p/h past a cop shop and got away with it. I hope they don’t next time. How would they feel if it was their best friend or family member they killed or maimed? To own a driver’s licence is a privilege, not a ‘right’. When I did my defensive driving course many years ago, our tutor said “a vehicle can be a more deadly weapon than a gun. You can kill a dozen in one go with a vehicle, but only one at a time

with a gun”. I would pray daily on the road, that I can be a safe and careful driver, whatever the circumstances, and not have on my conscience ‘the death by accident’ of another human being. Damaging farming practices

I am writing to express concern about the amount of sediment and runoff from some farming practices in the Glasshouse region. According to a council spokesperson, there have been problems with some farming practices in the area which don’t observe best practice, and simply place a pit where sediment can run into. I have been informed by Council that there is nothing that can be done about this, except clean up the mess in those instances where it (the sediment/ run off) is deemed unsafe. Rate payers are then held responsible for the clean up bill. This has happened a number of times in the past and unless there is a public campaign, it will continue to happen. A further concern is the sediment overflow from some farms runs directly into Sandy Creek Tributary carrying with it insecticide, pesticides and chemical fertilisers. This tributary eventually feeds into the Pumicestone Passage; the effect on marine life is also in question. Julia Gee

When local businesses give you efficient service and are friendly and cooperative when you have a problem, they deserve a public shake of the hand. Recently I had a minor collision in my vehicle, and took it for repairs to Top Gun Panel and Paint in Beerwah. Manager Wayne Sauer and the young lady in reception were at all times cheerful and helpful. Wayne even loaned me a courtesy car for three weeks, saving me hundreds of dollars. From dawn to dusk on Halloween—watch out A major conservation program is looking for help from Sunshine Coast residents to survey Glossy Black Cockatoo populations here on the Coast. Researchers are keen to gather more information on cockatoo populations during a dawn to dusk survey on Sunday, October 31 in south east Queensland and northern New South Wales. Sunshine Coast Council is just one of a regional group of councils supporting the survey, along with industry, non government organisations, academic partners and friends concerned with the conservation of the Glossy Black-Cockatoo. People interested in taking part in the birding day can contact their regional coordinator through the Glossy Black Conservancy website www.glossyblack.org.au Survey participants will be given information on survey locations and how to identify Glossy Black-Cockatoo from other similar species. Glossy Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami lathami) are a local native species and are under threat because of their restricted diet, feeding only on the seeds in cones of she-oaks (Casuarina and Allocasuarina) and only on selected individual trees. An inaugural population survey was conducted in 2009 by Griffith University with the support of councils. Glossy Black-Cockatoo are less gregarious than their Yellow-tailed or Red-tailed cousins and tend to travel in small groups. The smallest of the black cockatoos, they have red panels on their tail feathers but not the prominent crests as seen in other species. The females also have characteristic patches of yellow feathers on their heads. The cockatoos can live for over 30 years and breed every two years with a single egg laid in late January to early June and with a longer nestling period then any other cockatoos (up to 90 days). The young are dependent on the parents for at least a year. They're found in natural bushland and peri-urban landscapes throughout southeast Queensland and northern NSW. Historical sighting records will assist in identifying survey areas and known feeding (she-oak habitat), roosting (Eucalypt woodland), or drinking locations on public and private lands will be targeted. Survey grid cells of 1km² will be identified and assigned to volunteers but interested landowners can also survey their own properties if Glossy BlackCockatoo are known to frequent these areas. Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean, Phone: 0427 606 240 This time we will have a look at the Billbergia genus. The Billbergia was named after Gustave Billberg, a Swedish botanist. Billbergias are native to eastern Brazil, Mexico and Central America in the main, but have been found in Peru and Argentina. There are over 50 recognised species, and several hundred registered hybrids. In their natural habitat, they are epiphytes, found usually in large clumps in good light.

Billbergias can grow in the ground and will quickly develop into feature clumps within a few years. They are often a common sight in shady corners in many older sub-tropical / tropical gardens. Many billbergias though, will grow best under much more light. They also need to be ‘starved’ of nutrient if you wish to bring out the best colour in the colouredleaved billbergias (if you fertilise these billbergias as you would with other bromeliads, then their leaves will become ‘lanky’ and green). They can be grown successfully in 125mm to 140mm pots filled with a coarse bromeliad mix. Billbergias were among the first bromeliads to be hybridised, and consequently many of those now grown are hybrids. Billbergias often have beautiful, but short-lived (seven to 14 days) inflorescences (flower spikes). This leads many people to concentrate on growing the coloured-leaved billbergias. The Billbergia amoena ‘Red’ form is a fairly large and attractive billbergia with pink and spotted cream leaves when grown in good light. The upright flower spikes have shocking pink bracts and green flowers with bright blue tips. It is very prolific and can cover larger areas quickly via its underground stolons (runners). When grown in a pot it will soon outgrow the pot with the fine roots attaching to the outside of the pot to support the new growth, as would occur when growing in a tree. The new pups arise from relatively long stolons and often grow much higher than the parent plant. This unusual characteristic means it can grow as a climber. The flower spikes are pendulous, sometimes hanging below the base of the plant and are usually very glamorous. All in all, the Billbergia bromeliads are a wonderful addition to any local garden or verandah.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Fraser Island Creeper (Tecomanthe hillii) When it comes to Australian native climbers it is hard to go past the Fraser Island Creeper when it comes to showy flowers. Throughout Spring and Summer it produces masses of large pink trumpet shaped flowers. It looks great growing up a tree, over an arbour or along a fence. It naturally occurs in rainforest pockets north from Bli Bli and as the name suggests is prominent in the World Heritage rainforest on Fraser Island. It is quite a vigorous grower with large lush green leaves and has a preference for moist well drained soils in full sun or semi shade. Drop in and check out the floral display in the nursery now.

Local butchers Andrew and Shelley Stevens from Top Shop Butchery Beerwah certainly know how to handle a knife. Our koalas are in a critical state and we are dedicated to making sure they survive. We are a non profit organisation that operates 24 hours a day seven days a week. We rescue sick, orphaned or displaced koalas in all areas. As I was thinking about what to write for this week’s column I came across this story which I had collected from somewhere: The First Billionaire The very first person to reach the status of billionaire was a man who knew how to set goals and follow through. At the age of 23, he had become a millionaire, by the age of 50 a billionaire. Every decision, attitude, and relationship was tailored to create his personal power and wealth. But three years later at the age of 53 he became ill. His entire body became racked with pain and he lost all the hair on his head. This new direction eventually led to the discovery of penicillin, cures for current strains of malaria, tuberculosis and diphtheria. The list of discoveries resulting from his choice is enormous. But perhaps the most amazing part of Rockefeller's story is that the moment he began to give back a portion of all that he had earned, his body's chemistry was altered so significantly that he got better. It looked as if he would die at 53 but he lived to be 98. Rockefeller learned gratitude and gave back from his wealth. Doing so made him whole. It is one thing to be healed it is another to be made whole. It appears that the one leper who returned and threw himself at Jesus' feet in gratitude was not only healed he was saved by his thanksgiving. "Rise and go," Jesus said, "your faith has made you well." As we reflect on this Jesus came to save and make people whole. He set up the principle by with which John D. Rockefeller discovered and as a result became well again. Jesus came to this earth and gave himself for us to be made whole.

Sports news A perfect pony

To Neville and Janice Lyons from Mooloolah their pony is simply known as ‘Bronzy’ but his full show name is Maitland Bar Master Bronze, and he’s a champion. Bronzy is a 10-year-old Welsh B Stallion and continues to win many awards. In the past he’s won the Brisbane Royal Show three times in a row and won Supreme Ridden Pony at the Gatton All Welsh Show, receiving a medal from Wales. Bronzy has continued to show fine form at the recent Australian Stud Book Pony Society Show at Caboolture, where he won Champion Stallion, Supreme Welsh and then went against all breeds to win Supreme Pony of the Show. “This won him the Hamon Cup, which is a pretty prestigious thing to win and is very sort after,” said Janice. “He also won Champion Ridden Stallion and Supreme Ridden Pony of the Show. It felt pretty good because we’re very fond of him. He’s just bit different. He’s gorgeous. He knows he’s special because we give him carrots.” One reason for Bronzy’s amazing success is his Welsh blood lines, according to Janice. “He’s got impeccable breeding,” she said. “I love how quiet he is, and he’s easy to handle. He is endearing, we’ve both got a really soft spot for him.” Neville and Janice have been showing ponies for 24 years. Janice said that Neville does the

actual showing, where you run out with them, and walk with them, so the judges can see the pony’s action. Their love of showing began after a move to Queensland and a suggestion from a friend. “When we came up from Sydney my husband said he’d buy me a pony because I’ve always wanted one. We like showing, going with friends. We donate a lot of trophies and I make garlands to go around their neck when they win,” she said. Janice revealed some of the things they do to prepare for shows. “When you’re showing you’ve got to put a light rug on them early, take it off through the day if it’s too hot, groom them most days to get their coat looking really good and give them feed which brings them up lovely.” They have shown about 20 ponies over the years but Bronzy is special to them. “Bronzy is probably the best of them, but the others are not far behind.”

Last Wednesday morning’s Ladies’ Day was cancelled as a result of rain and a wet green, as was our Business Bowls Competition that night and also our Friday ‘Night Bowls’. The 2010 Ladies’ Drawn and Graded Pairs semi-final was played on Thursday morning with Marleen Bertram and Di Hunt 21 defeating Di Garland and Denise Sinton 10. Our Glasshouse Country two-day Mixed Fours Carnival of five games of 15 ends was held on the weekend with 14 teams competing for $1,000.00 in prize money.
