Hi everyone As I drove to the office today along the newly opened stretch of Steve Irwin Way between Palmview and Glenview I marveled at how quickly the final work must have been completed. Only 10 days ago Main Roads advised Kylie our News Editor that it would be open sometime in the next two months, and then the day after the last edition of GCNews hit the street both lanes of the road were opened. I don’t think we can take credit for putting that much pressure on the government to make things happen that quickly – but it is always nice to see a bit of people power in place to get a result! And while it is nice to be able to drive a little faster than when all of the barricades and signage was in place, it just seems so much easier
to figure out which way you go. For a while every time you used the road the conditions would change between the morning and that night, so you really had to stay on your toes! So finally the job is complete and it looks great with the National Park on each side. I am not sure though how it will look when we finally get to the Glass House Mountains stretch, I can’t imagine that there will be too much vegetation left on either side of the double lane road.

Eleventh hour plea to secure charity sports future By Kylie Wyer It may have only been a small gathering, but the level of frustration was clear, when members of the Beerwah Charity Sports Committee made an eleventh hour plea to both the State Government and Council to resolve their differences and move forward on the entrance for the Beerwah Sportsground.
Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle, who arranged Friday’s delegation on site at the Beerwah Sportsground, said time was up for both levels of government to take some responsibility for the condition of the entrance to the sportsground. “What is at stake here is a grand 40 year old tradition, the proceeds of which have been supporting community projects and charities for years, including a sizeable donation to the Queensland Cancer Council over the past two years,” Mr McArdle said. “It will be a real shame to see it fall by the way because of the apparent failure of both governments to work together and come to some agreement over the necessary works to ensure a safe entrance to the sportsground.” Charity Committee Chair Bruce Page said there was a real need to make both Council and the State Government aware of the need to get their act together. “If the event is to continue, we need assurances that the necessary works will be undertaken,” Mr Page said.

Members of the Charity Sports Committee and other local groups met on site last week with State member Mark McArdle Mr Page said since the committee had made the difficult decision earlier this year to postpone this year’s event, which would have marked the 40th anniversary because of safety concerns over the existing entrance, still nothing had been done. “There has been no action at all, and it appears there is no action on the horizon,” Mr Page said. He said it had been 18 months since Council said it would be ‘shovel ready’ to commence work on the new entrance, once the contractor had completed the roadworks associated with the bypass. Those roadworks were completed last year. “It’s a disgrace that they (Council) have left it in this state.” “They need to decide where the entrance is going to be, and make a start on it.” He said it would be difficult to estimate how long it would take to complete the entrance, as it was still not known where the new entrance will be. “One thing is for certain, though – if a decision isn’t made and works started sooner rather than later, taking into account the upcoming wet season, it’s likely that we’ll be in the same position as we were earlier this year, and not able to proceed with the event.”

Main Roads heeds calls for action
Landsborough

Last week we brought you the story of the ongoing delays to completely open the multimillion dollar dual carriage-way along Steve Irwin Way between Mooloolah and Glenview. With a completion date long since passed, when we contacted Main Roads last week, the best they could offer was an opening date being ‘within the next two months’, citing weather as a major factor in the ongoing delays. Following our inquiries and representations from local member Mark McArdle, however, this week the anticipated two month completion date was somehow whittled down to just days, as both lanes of traffic were finally opened to traffic late last Thursday.
David Watts, Manager of the BP Mooloolah, said he was pleased to finally see all the barricades removed. “Hopefully things will now start to improve, but I expect it (business) will be slow to pick up, as it takes a while for habits to change,” Mr Watts said. Mr Watts said he believed motorists were intimidated by all the barricades and traffic cones, and will now have to get used to the road conditions all over again. Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle congratulated the community for pulling together to see the road completed. “Clearly the two months timeframe Main Roads quoted last week was ridiculous,” he said.

BIG TIME DUO
Ashley Ogilive and Ailish Bolt, our local Joey Ambassadors Brother and sister team Ashley Ogilive and Ailish Bolt of Glass House Mountains are two of a group of 26 young international wildlife warriors in the making, hand picked from their peers for their unique passion for wildlife conservation. And their mission: to spread awareness and raise funds for wildlife conservation in the lead up to Steve Irwin Day, November 15. For 15-year-old Ashley, wildlife conservation is a big part of his life. When he’s not busy attending school and doing ‘normal’ teenage things, Ash is one of the educational hosts and key drivers of youth focused website, Planet You (www.planetyou.org.au). It was his commitment and passion to help get the website up and going that saw him selected for the Joey Ambassador program. Ash, who is inspired by all the great work done by Australia Zoo and the Irwin family, says there is one quote from his hero Steve Irwin that pretty much sums up his own passion for wildlife conservation: ‘One man can make a difference.’ “Being a Joey Ambassador is a great way to help raise funds and keep going all the great work being done by Australia Zoo and the Wildlife Warriors,” Ash said. “I’d love to see everyone in the local community make a donation, and tell their family and friends about it. Even something as small as five cents, it all helps make a difference.” Six-year-old Ailish, who also helps out on Planet You, just can’t say no to helping save animals. “They’re all just so cute, I want to help them all,” she said. The Joey Ambassadors, who live throughout Australia, the USA and the United Arab Emirates, hope to raise $20,000 for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, and will be set a series of challenges throughout the program. In the meantime, both Ash and Ailish are encouraging locals to get behind them and support the cause, with merchandise and a donation box set up at Setters Fruit & Veg. Alternatively, visit www.wildlifewarriors.org.au While Steve Irwin may have left big shoes to fill, these two young locals are well on the way to making their own mark.

Drive past Vanda Grabowski’s home at Glass House Mountains and from the outside you’ll see an ordinary home just like the others in the street. It’s only when you step inside that you realise this is no ordinary home and Vanda is no ordinary woman. Her home has been set up to care for joey koalas. Vanda is a registered wildlife carer and is licensed to care for up to five koalas at one time. At the moment she has two koalas under her care. “I started looking after sick, injured and orphans koalas in 1993, and started raising joeys in 1999. By then I had enough knowledge of mature koalas to know their behaviour and their psychology to be able to assess a youngster with a bit more expertise than I did in the past,” she said. “I became a carer because I’ve always been interested in Australian wildlife, they are incredibly unique. Through studying at University

I just thought, wow, how special these creatures are. And that started me getting interested in volunteer work. I started at Moggill Koala hospital in 1993 and I just fell hopelessly and desperately and obsessively in love.” Vanda can’t imagine her life without koalas. “The reward is releasing them into the wild, successfully rehabilitating them, and helping them grow into big strong boys and girls. You’re happy to see them go because that’s what you’ve worked night and day for.” Her biggest challenge is finding food for them, and that is where she needs your help. There are 170 species of Eucalyptus in South East Queensland, but koalas eat only a very limited number. While there are about 18 varieties of trees that are suitable, the primary food trees are Eucalyptus microcorys, Eucalyptus propinqua, Eucalyptus robusta and Eucalyptus tereticornis. “Leaf is the biggest challenge, you can’t cut from big trees because height is an issue. I used to cut from the side of roads, regrowth, but now Energex and Powerlink are poisoning the trees so you can’t risk accessing it. You’re not allowed to cut in parks, so you’re reliant on plantations where you compete with other organisations,” she said. Vanda would like anyone who slashes paddocks and has regrowth, or intends to cut down mature trees, and are willing to allow her access to the trees, to contact her. “If people don’t know what trees they’ve got, I can identify them,” she said. Her role as a carer is a 24 hour a day job and includes providing for the koalas physical, mental and emotional needs. She has to go out every day and cut leaf because they need fresh leaf every day. Vanda also volunteers for Australia zoo Wildlife Hospital two days a week, but says the koalas are definitely worth the effort. “I got involved as a koala carer during a very dark time in my own life and they gave me a reason to go on. They gave my life a purpose and meaning,” she said. If you can help Vanda, give her a call on 5438 7537 or 0407 101 837.

Pony Club to host second annual charity golf day have a fabulous day and if it is anything like last year, not one player went home empty handed, with lots of novelty holes, competitions and raffles. Funds raised last year were used to purchase much-needed new equipment and were also used to construct improvements to holding yards etc at the Beerwah Sportsground. These improvements addressed safety concerns when the grounds were in use by different sporting groups at the same time. The Club is seeking and will welcome all teams and sponsors for the 2010 event. For any business who may wish to put forward a team and/or be a sponsor for the day, it is a great opportunity to have a fun day out or perhaps have Two club members who caddied at last year’s event, Laura your Christmas breakup party. The Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club Inc is stepping outside its comfort zone again this year by holding its second annual Charity Golf Day at the Beerwah Golf Club on Sunday, November 21. Last year’s event was such a wonderful success that the Club has decided to bring an extra very worthy beneficiary on board – Riding for the Disabled, Sunshine Coast. Riding for the Disabled’s primary objective is to provide most people who have a disability with the opportunity to ride and enjoy all the activities connected with horse riding. For people with disabilities, horse riding is both therapeutic and recreational. RDA is in fact, one of the few organisations that cater for people of all ages with a very wide range of disabilities. The Golf Day will be run as a ‘4 Ball Ambrose’ so you certainly don’t have to be a good golfer to

What makes the Sunshine Coast, and Palmview in particular, home to you? I just can’t imagine living anywhere else but the Sunshine Coast, it’s such a welcoming place and the vibe is so relaxed. I have great memories growing up here and don’t think I could ever let all that go! If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be? If I absolutely had to it would probably be Melbourne, I’ve spent a bit of time down there and there’s so much sport and good food that I reckon I could fit in. Last week we caught up with our favourite, national award winning country artist, Liam Brew, on the eve of his next round of local performances. We took the opportunity to ask Liam, who hails from Palmview, just what it is that makes the Sunshine Coast the greatest place on earth.
We have two copies of Liam’s debut album, Wild Heart, to give away to a lucky reader. To go in the draw, email reception@gcnews.com.au or by post to PO Box 99, Beerwah, 4519 by 4.00pm, Monday, October 11. Don't forget to include your name, suburb, and daytime contact number.

When you are not busy recording, performing or touring, what do you love doing when you are just hanging out at home? I love having a Sunday session at home with my mates, play some pool or table tennis and do a big cook up. You can catch Liam performing live at the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern on October 16 and 29, November 19 and December 3. Liam will also be performing at the Caloundra RSL on November 27 and December 4. Note: all performances at Glasshouse Mountains Tavern commence at 7.30pm.

10% DISCOUNT FOR SENIORS & PENSION CARD HOLDERS EVERY WEDNESDAY
Doing business Five minutes with …… Goona Nair-Rust from Chic Effects What do you want people to know about your business? Where we are! Some people Goona Nair-Rust still don’t know we’re here, just down from the IGA at Beerwah and across the road from Coochin Creek Co-op on Simpson Street. What are the benefits that your business offers to GCNews readers? We not only have a great range of quality, affordable ladies clothes including plus sizes but we have accessories, bags, jewellery and more. I often surprise customers with discounts. I’m happy to give discounts to customers whether I’m having a sale or not. I get to know them and treat them like VIP’s. Tell us about your experience in the industry? I’ve been running Chic Effects for almost four years but I’ve been in the fashion industry for 14 years. I’m originally from Malaysia, but fashion is universal. When I was young a very talented business man taught me all I know of this industry. ‘It is important to be aware of what customers want for we are all different’, he'd say. What have been your business highlights so far? Lots! I’ve had the most amazing time, met a lot of people. Everyone is so supportive. It’s great when people come in and go ‘wow’. They may have looked everywhere then come in here and find what they want, that’s awesome. The people keep me going, it’s easy to come to work. What is something about you that we don’t know? I grew up in Malaysia which is multicultural, so I learnt to speak seven languages just by listening to people, including Hindi, Bahasa, (national language of Malaysia) and five different dialects of Chinese. Learning languages comes naturally to me. Does being multi-lingual help in your business? Definitely, it’s a big plus. When I deal with wholesalers, if you can speak a little bit of their language, the doors open wide. And when a customer comes in and they are also multilingual, even speaking one word helps connect with them. What are your operating hours? We’re open Monday to Friday from 9.00am 5.00pm and Saturday from 9.00am - 1.00pm.

Putting the ‘clean’ back into spring cleaning with Organic Dry
Al Caiulo It's that time of year again when we are forced to consider the often arduous task of spring cleaning. Both inside and out, it’s a major undertaking, but when it comes to your floor coverings, fortunately there is help at hand. Al and Jill Caiulo of Organic Dry Carpet Cleaning and Maintenance, offer a unique biodegradable carpet cleaning method that is not only perfect for families with allergies, it is also highly recommended as a preferred cleaning method. Suitable for carpets, rugs and upholstery cleaning and fabric protection, the Organic Dry method leaves surfaces completely dry, and wonderfully clean and fresh. There is no chance for mould or mildew to grow back as there is no moisture and by avoiding harmful chemicals and detergents, it not only avoids attracting dirt and grime, it’s a safe and environmentally friendly option. Al and Jill have been operating their business for more than a decade, and have built a solid reputation based on the effectiveness of their service and customer satisfaction. Having recently moved into the area, to celebrate, Al and Jill are offering all readers a 10 per cent discount when you book your next treatment. “We have a very longstanding customer base which has primarily been achieved through word of mouth, and we are keen to establish the same rapport with new customers in the Glasshouse Country region,” Al said. “Our system is Woolsafe approved and Green Seal certified and is highly recommended by leading carpet and rug institutes worldwide.” So if you are about to embark on your annual cleaning regime, give Al and Jill from Organic Dry Carpet Cleaning and Maintenance a call on 0412 781 485 today. They also offer an after hours service for commercial properties as well.
Is your networking not working? We all know these days that networking is a really critical part of small business success but knowing this and knowing how to get the most out of the time you spend networking, is not so simple. To get some great tips and learn from other business people’s war stories, the Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce are holding a free workshop followed by a dinner meeting on Wednesday, October 20 at the Beerwah Hotel. President, Kel McNamara, of KLM Energy Services said it should be a great night. “It kicks off straight from work at 5.30pm, then everyone can grab a drink and learn about networking. Then we will get a chance to practice our new skills over dinner and the night should wrap up around 8.15pm.” Geoff Butler of Vestra Business Advantage, who will be running the workshop, is based in Maleny and is a very active member of the Maleny Chamber. With more than 30 years of business experience behind him, Geoff has a strong desire to show business owners the value of networking as an important tool to grow their business in an economical and highly rewarding way. “During the dinner, we also have two special guests from Beerwah High, who will be discussing opportunities for individual businesses to work with the School," Kel said. “Thanks to a great offer from the Beerwah Hotel, the whole night will only cost you $25.00 per person and this includes a two course meal.” Don’t miss this great opportunity to improve your business – to book your ticket phone Sarah at Glasshouse Country News on 5494 6066 or email reception@gcnews.com.au

The Combined Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains meet on the second Wednesday of each month at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 10.00am. All members and visitors will be made very welcome. We are a very friendly group of retirees who enjoy friendship and outings. We are always looking for new members to join us. Morning tea is provided and members bring along a small plate of food to share for lunch. Our guest speaker for our meeting on Wednesday, October 13 will be Patrick Pickett, CEO of the Qld Symphony Orchestra to speak about the orchestra and its aspirations for the future. Next month our speaker will be Damien Powell of the Missing Persons Bureau. We will also be celebrating our 10th anniversary at our November meeting; this will be our last meeting for the year so we urge all members to attend to help make it a great day. Our regular coffee and chat morning last month was held at both Tunny Southwell’s and Norma and Gordon McCormack’s homes. This is a very enjoyable way for our members to get to know one another in a less formal manner. The club outing on Wednesday, October 20 will be to the Caloundra Beach, members can choose to buy fish and chips or bring along their own lunch. On Wednesday, November 17 we will be enjoying our Christmas luncheon at Tranquil Park again this year. Our Mahjong group continues to meet every second Monday at the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, for more information phone Gwen on 5494 6231. Special thoughts are with our members who are not well at the moment and we wish them a speedy recovery. If you are interested in becoming a member or wish to attend our meetings you may like to phone President Josephine 5408 0250 or Secretary Ruth 5496 9943 for further information.
Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains Contributed by Ursula Starkovsky
September has been another busy and rewarding month for our local Rotary Club. We have had numerous speakers and great presentations at our weekly meetings, starting on September 13 with Tricia and Colleen from the Endeavour Rally Qld sharing their experiences and adventures. Endeavour Rally Qld is a major fundraiser for people with intellectual disabilities. Tricia and Colleen take part under the name of ‘Antique Angels with Attitude’. We can only imagine what a name like that will trigger along the route! On September 27, the Rotary Club invited the local Lions Club for a combined meeting and networking opportunity. Rotarian Trevor Taylor took us all on a trip to the Solomon Islands where Rotary International is providing much needed help with construction of medical facilities and schools. Trevor has been involved with a number of these Rotary projects over the past few years. It clearly showed how so little can make such a huge difference to the people who literally have nothing. Thank you Trevor for sharing your experiences with us. Coming up during the next month, our Rotary Club, together with the Caloundra Club, will be hosting RYDA, the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness day. Year 11 students from both Beerwah High and Glasshouse Country Christian College are invited to take part. Rotary’s aim is to provide education for young drivers, starting with the financial commitments of owning a vehicle to the safety of drivers and passengers. Rotary always welcomes visitors to our meetings on Monday evenings at the Beerwah Hotel. If you would like to know more information about any of the above events or our club, please call us on 0431 829 119 or Google Glasshouse Rotary and follow the links.

Day for Daniel
Christmas Card competition
I am continuing my campaign to encourage all Parliamentarians to wear something red on October 29 in recognition of ‘Day for Daniel’, which aims to assist in spreading the child safety message. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation hopes the involvement of Parliamentarians will boost the national profile of the day, which is held in tribute of the Sunshine Coast teenager who has been missing since December, 2003. I wrote to all Federal and Queensland politicians in August, asking them to commit to wearing an item of red clothing on October 29. I especially encouraged them to buy a red tie for $30.00 from the Foundation, so that they’ll also be donating money to the cause. I was pleased to receive an email reply recently from Tasmanian Senator Guy Barnett, advising that following my request, he had bought a red tie from the Foundation and would be wearing it on October 29. For more information log on to www.danielmorcombe.com.au or www. dayfordaniel.com.au
Rainfall
It has been great to see some very healthy rainfalls in the region over recent weeks. It is particularly encouraging to see gardens and parks looking so green and lush. I hope it is a positive sign for the remainder of spring. Daily weather forecasts and rainfall reports are available at the Bureau of Meteorology website at: www.bom.gov.au/jsp/watl/rainfall/pme.jsp
Telco Inquiry
The Australian Communication and Media Authority is hosting an inquiry into Telco customer care. Over 120 submissions have been submitted to the inquiry, which is looking into public concerns and views about Telco customer service, complaintshandling problems and possible remedies and the like. The submissions have been received from industry, government, consumer representative groups and individuals. A draft report is expected to be released in February 2011. For details about the inquiry and to view submissions, visit the ACMA’s website at www.acma.gov.au
Last Christmas many of you would have received my first Christmas card / calendar in your letter box. Feedback on the card / calendar has been excellent and preparations are underway for my 2010 version. This year, I am calling on primary school students in the electorate to draw a picture representing their idea of a ‘Queensland Christmas’. I have written to all of the Glass House schools providing a template for the drawing and a permission slip to be signed by parents. The winning picture will feature on the front of my 2010 Christmas card and will be sent to over 20,000 households and businesses in Glass House. There will also be space for second and third and also some runner up’s on the inside cover as well. Entries close on Wednesday, October 27 so if your child would like to be involved make sure you check with their teacher.
Mobile Office in Glass House and Beerwah
I am continuing my mobile offices throughout the electorate during October and will be set up at the following locations – Wednesday, October 20 – 3.30pm - 5.00pm – Rotary Settlers Park, Glass House Mountains Friday, October 22 – 7.00am - 8.30am – Settlement Park, Fig Tree Drive, Beerwah If you have any state issues that you need to raise with me, feel free to come along, or if you can’t make it call the office on 5435 2013 and my staff will be more than happy to book an appointment for you.
Storm season is coming
Many of us have lived through some pretty destructive Queensland storms in our time. Emergency Management Queensland has just announced their 2010/2011 storm season campaign encouraging communities to work together and be prepared for summer storms. They have also produced a new guide that contains important information about how we can ensure we are ready for storms and even cyclones, floods and tsunamis. The Get Ready Guide can be downloaded from www.emergency.qld.gov.au/emq/css/ publications.asp. During storm season it is important to remember that SES volunteers are always the first ones on the scene to lend a hand. Anything we can do at home to be better prepared will certainly make their job that little bit easier.

About 400 guests from across the Sunshine Coast filled Beerwah District Hall recently for a beautiful citizenship ceremony. Mayor Bob Abbot conducted the citizenship protocols to nearly 150 new citizens. I was also joined by Councillors Tim Dwyer and Ted Hungerford, the State Member for GlassHouse, Andrew Powell, and the Federal Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper. One of the highlights was the performance by the Beerwah State High School Concert Band. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Glass House Country community to showcase our facilities and hospitality.
I met recently with Officers to discuss Flexlink service in Division 5. Static displays promoting Flexilink have been put up in the Maleny and Noosa libraries this month. Over 783 feedback forms were received from the community during the consultation stage with 85 per cent of these responses saying that they thought that the Flexilink Services were a good idea. A review of the operation and performance of the service is proposed for the end of September 2010. Glenview to Mooloolah Valley - figures to date show that the service is not being utilised to the fullest. I would appreciate it if you contacted my office to advise if the times or the destination are not suitable. Please remember that the service is currently under review, so if you don’t use it, you will lose it. My office number is 5441 8043. Conondale to Maleny - strong support for the service will stand in good stead as the service is being reviewed. The number of users for the month of July was 101 and in August 93, which shows a small decrease.

Old Peachester Road traffic speed and signage
Council has carried out a speed review of Old Peachester Road after numerous requests from concerned residents. The review was tabled at the September Speed Management Committee Meeting with a recommendation to reduce the 100 kilometre speed limit to 70 kilometres for the full length of Old Peachester Road. New signage will be installed in the coming weeks and it is likely that we could expect some Police presence to enforce the new speed limit in the near future. So look out for the signs to make sure you are aware when the new speed limit comes into force.
Beerburrum footpath to be extended
Earlier this year I funded a footpath project that saw a new pathway constructed from the Beerburrum shops along to Anzac Avenue. After further requests from the Beerburrum Community, I have found the funds for the continuation of this path network which will see the footpath extended along to Acacia Avenue. We are also working on a request to have a street light installed on the corner of Beerburrum Road and Anzac Avenue, to assist commuters on their way home from the railway station.
Beerwah office
I would like to remind residents that I now have opened an office at Beerwah. The new office is located in the BADYYAC building behind the Skatepark at the Beerwah Sportsground complex on Roberts Road. Meetings at my new office are by appointment. To make an appointment, just call my Caloundra Office on 5420 8987. I hope this new arrangement is more suitable to the GlassHouse region residents.
Naming policy
A number of applications have been made recently around the naming of local parks. As with all park / road / street naming applications, the application will be assessed against Council’s Naming Policy. Part of that process is for consideration to be given to the name, it needs to be easy to pronounce, spell and write, simple, concise and preferably of 20 or fewer characters. If personal names are to be used, the person commemorated should have contributed significantly to the development of the Shire. The adoption of a personal name during the lifetime of a person concerned should only be made in exceptional circumstance.
Giving life - talking about organ donation at your local library
Sunshine Coast Regional Donor Coordinators will be presenting the ‘Seeds of Hope’ program throughout October in libraries across the region to explain what people need to do to protect their wishes, and how to find out about local processes. A session will be held at the Maleny Library on Monday, October 18 from 3.30pm - 4.30pm, call 5429 6222. Sessions are free and with places filling fast, bookings are essential. More information is available at www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and www.donatelife.gov.au

Wear Pink for October Hinterland Body and Soul are looking to make breast cancer awareness a greater priority and source of interest in the community. Pink Ribbon events are a great way to promote awareness, and for the month of October we are hosting a Pink Ribbon event by donating 10 per cent of every treatment we do throughout the month. It’s a great way for you to support the cause, not to mention a wonderful excuse to have a relaxing, refreshing experience. Also, a donation box will be in the salon for anyone wishing just to drop in and make a donation. Are you looking for gift ideas or something special for yourself? Christmas is only 11 weeks away, so come into the salon and buy a gift voucher and checkout the different products we offer. At present we have a half price sale on our current Jurlique stock. Glasshouse Country Festival June 4 - 10 2011
June 4 - 10 2011 Festival Co-ordinator Bob McLean Calling all schools, community, sporting, heritage and cultural groups!
The Glasshouse Country Festival planned for June 4-10 next year is really beginning June 4 - 10 to2011 take shape and the organising committee are looking out for other groups who would like to be a part of this inaugural festival to put Glasshouse Country firmly on the map. “If you think that there may be a way that you, or a group you are involved in, could add something extra to this important event, then we need to see you at our planning meeting on Tuesday, October 12, from 2.30pm at the Beerwah Library meeting room,” Festival Coordinator Bob McLean said. “We would love to have artist’s exhibitions, workshops, concerts, demonstrations, launches, markets, dinners, competitions, open days and plenty more. “We are really only limited by our imaginations.” Bob said the festival proposal focuses a range of activities, and events on five separate areas of Arts, Culture, Heritage, Sustainability and Special Events so this means there are plenty of opportunities to identify a way of getting involved. Marketing Co-ordinator, Julie Walton, has written an excellent funding proposal for a Queensland Week Grant, and is now hard at work on creating sponsorship proposals and securing sponsors. Having a professional take on the task of generating the funds so that we can have a major promotional budget really takes pressure off those organising the events. This will allow them the chance to focus on creating great events and not having the added stress of having to promote the event as well. If you are part of a group that would like to become involved in our event, please send Bob an email at info@ glasshousecountryfestival.com.au Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 12 and we would love to see you there.
The Reluctant Psychic Punched in the face by a spirit, tricked into believing one entity was a nice woman when she was actually spiteful and being thrown back into her chair by her - these experiences may sound like fiction but they are actually just some of the things real life psychic medium, Debbie Bozicevic-Mewes, from Mooloolah, has experienced. Letters are printed at the discretion of the editor, Lea Parkes and her policy is to include letters which focus on issues and are not about personally attacking other people. For a letter to be considered for printing it must be accompanied by the name, address and phone number of the sender. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Preference is given to letters under 300 words. Letters may be edited to make them more readable, but the meaning will not be changed. Regular correspondents will be limited to alternate issues to give everyone a chance to have their say. Letters must meet the Friday 12.00noon deadline. I want to say thank you for dropping off your old mobile phones to my recycle boxes. We managed to collect 212 phones in eight weeks, and I am pretty proud of that effort. Hopefully I have made everyone aware of the damage the mining and poaching are doing to the Mountain Gorillas. You can still drop off your old mobiles for recycling to Australia Zoo or my school office (Beerwah State School). Let’s keep on helping. Thank you so much. Alannah McLeod Beerwah

changed in virtually every way possible. Look at a Watoto child and see a leader, equipped to make a lasting impact in their community and on Uganda. Uganda has endured the scourge of civil war and the deadly AIDS epidemic. Approximately two million children in Uganda have been orphaned. The mission of Watoto is to raise the next generation of Ugandan leaders by placing parentless children (two – 12 years) in families where the necessary love, care, spiritual discipleship and physical needs are provided. Watoto currently operates three childrens’ villages and cares for over 1,500 children. The villages include individual homes, each accommodate eight children and a house mother, a complete school system for the children and the surrounding communities, plus the entire infrastructure to support a community. The result is a self-sustaining village that serves the children while providing employment for women and teachers, and steady jobs for labourers. Here is an opportunity for us all to be thankful for what we have here in Australia. Here is a chance to reach out to orphaned kids in another country who are far less fortunate than our own children. I know that all money donated to support the Mission Watoto project goes into home building costs. To build a home costs approximately $38,000 Australian dollars. This price includes the building materials, earthworks, sewerage, electrical works, landscaping, furniture and fittings. Please join with me to give HOPE and a future to these innocent children. You can contact me, Karen Westaway, by email doug_westaway@hotmail.com or phone 5438 7293. I am currently selling tickets in a Rydges holiday raffle drawn in November and holding a garage sale on October 9 at 109 Bowen Road, Glasshouse. Donations are tax deductable. Can you see a pattern?
With regard to Mr Webbs’ letter in last weeks’ GCNews (September 29) re Unity Water, ‘A rushed affair, practicalities not been fully thought through, internal procedures incomplete, communication channels almost non-existent.’ Sounds like an allround description of most of Labors’ initiatives, State and Federal! Bird stealers
To the person or persons who during the night on Saturday, October 2 entered our property at Glass House Mountains and took two baby birds out of a cage on our back patio. These birds are too young to be able to feed themselves and have to be hand-fed with a special formula or they will die. And for your trouble, unless you know what you are doing, you’ll have no birds, and will have caused these little fellows a horrible death by starvation. Name withheld Glass House Mountains
Where there’s a will….
Our resident Willie Wagtails are kept busy feeding the three babies under our patio using the upturned lid of our lamp. They have been using the same nest for the last couple of years and clean up all the cobwebs and bugs on the patio. Bob and Vera Moss Landsborough
BEERWAH Family History Group Royal Marines – a good source for researchers
From the late 17th century to the present day the Royal Marines have distinguished themselves as a unique fighting force. Initially formed to fight in sea battles against the Dutch, the British soldiers played a key role in every major conflict involving Britain from 1755 to the 1940s. The role of the Marines was to act as the captain’s police force on board ship, enforcing his orders, guarding important areas of the ship and standing guard when punishments were carried out. However they were also highly trained to act as sharpshooters and gunners, as boarding parties to seize enemy ships and as an effective fighting force on land and sea. The scarlet dress uniforms earned them the name ‘lobsters’ but these were often replaced by loose clothing known as ‘slops’ for shipboard duty. From the earliest days records were so well kept that it is possible for the family historian to gain valuable
information about a man and even his relatives and background. One such marine was John Edwards Gilders (grandfather of John Thompson of Beerwah) pictured here, holding his daughter, Betty, in Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1916. He had joined the Royal Marines in 1898 and was discharged in1905 as he wished to marry so could no longer stay in the Marines. The family ‘bought’ him out but on the condition that he leave Britain. They young couple chose to live in Canada, and when war broke out in 1914 John joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, as a training officer in Regina. Ref. David Pilling, Family History Monthly. A to Z of trades and services Reader Testimonial with Tony McKay from Elimination Pest ManagementComplete Tank Maintenance "Recently, on my way to a job on the coast, my vehicle broke down. I rang a local mechanic and described the condition of my vehicle, and he told me I’d done my engine, so I called my local mechanic, Al from B and A Tyre and Mechanical, to arrange a tow. Al immediately arranged to have my vehicle towed back his workshop in Beerwah. After checking it out, Al informed me I hadn’t done
my engine at all, and he fixed the problem and had me on the road, and back to work all within a couple of hours. Now that is what I call great local service!”

I am often called out to repair small holes on plasterboard walls, caused by door handle to plasterboard contact. Repair is easy, but you can prevent these holes from occurring by moving the door stopper back along the door towards the hinges (about ten centimetres along the door should be enough to hold the door off the wall). However, there is one disadvantage, the door will not open as wide as before. Another small but handy tip. Instead of using reinforcing mesh on small concreting jobs such as a tool shed, use fibreglass chop strands. This gives a stronger bond within the concrete thus ensuring a small slab that is less likely to crack. Half a kilo. will be sufficient and don’t overwork your concrete as this will cause fray on the surface. Chop strands are available at any fibreglass suppliers. PS:- If anyone has a query I would be happy to try to help you. Cheers

News in brief
Marine Zones proposed for local waterways
Sunshine Coast Council is looking to establish Marine Zones on the Maroochy, Mooloolah and Pumicestone Passage waterways to balance the social, environmental and economic demands on our waterways. Marine Zones restrict certain types of recreational vessels and activities in a specified area of a waterway. Such zones already exist on the Noosa River, and the Coast’s three remaining estuaries will be evaluated to determine whether Council needs to go down this route. If approved by Council, the two year process to develop the Marine Zones will be done with extensive consultation with local groups who use the waterways, such as water skiers and rowers, and the community. Division 3 Councillor Keryn Jones said the waterways are shared by everyone and we need to find a way to strike a balance. “Our waterways are very popular and shared by lots of people—from swimmers, paddlers, rowers and sailors to jet skiers, wake boarders and water skiers,” Cr Jones said. “We want to make sure that our waterways are safe and enjoyable for all users—and Marine Zones are one way we can do that.” Cr Jones said the draft Waterways and Coastal Management Strategy, currently out for public comment, recognises that the increased demand for recreational space on our waterways, associated with population growth, is a big challenge. The community will be kept informed and involved every step of the way, she said. Marine Safety Queensland (MSQ)’s provides a procedure that must be followed when preparing a marine zone, requiring all relevant waterway users and groups with an interest in the waterway to be consulted in the preparation of draft proposals, as well as the wider community. It is expected that it will take at least two years for Marine Zones to be developed, assessed and endorsed by the State Government. A final decision on whether to pursue Marine Zones on the Maroochy and Mooloolah River estuaries, and the Pumicestone Passage will be made at the Ordinary Meeting of Council this week.

GOOD DEALS FOR THOSE IN THE KNOW Most property investors would be familiar with the concept that you make your profit when you buy. That is, buying wisely from the outset is the greatest determinant of how much profit you will ultimately make from your investment property. No matter how long you may hold the property for or how creative you may be in adding value to the property, if you have overpaid for the property from the outset, it will erode how much profit you realise on your investment. Hence the reason astute
investors spend a considerable amount of time doing their homework and then negotiating hard to ensure they purchase their property at the best possible price in order to maximise returns. Similarly, securing a good deal on the loan you use to finance your property purchase can have a significant impact on the long-term success of your investment. So how do you find the right finance deal? Well, in the same way that it is very unlikely you’d purchase the first house you viewed
from the first real estate agent you spoke with, chances are you’ll need to look around. But just as with the properties themselves, some of the best home loan deals are not always obvious to the uninitiated. For example, in this current environment, there may be greater flexibility for customers who already do business with a lender. At a time when lenders are generally only lending a maximum of 90% of the value of a property, some may lend up to 95% for those who already have an existing
facility with them. But which lenders offer this? And which lenders require you to have had something like a credit card, while others want to see you have a transaction account. And how active does the facility have to be? In an environment where bank lending policies are Call Adviser Teresa Harrison. regularly changing – and tightening – smart advice on T: 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 the best finance deals on offer www.smartline.com.au/tharrison (particularly those that are not always well publicised or explained) can have a huge impact on your investment plans. A fairytale adventure
Situated on 3,378m2 of land, is this custom designed, three bedroom, two bathroom home, straight out of a fairytale. Character abounds in the home, from the Tasmanian Oak floors underfoot, to the especially imported Canadian Oregon beams in the raked ceilings soaring overhead. There are three separate outdoor areas and every room in the house enjoys lovely Glass House Mountain views. Outside there is a separate, fully self-contained granny flat or teenagers’ retreat, complete with air conditioning and its own garaging. The twotier yard has plenty of space for the kids or pets to run and with the home being on termite resistant white cypress stumps, there is the added benefit of plenty of under house storage as well. All this, and much, much more, located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in the sought after township of Beerwah. This house simply must be seen to be appreciated… one of a kind. Contact Ben Guillemet, SCR Mooloolah, phone 5492 9977, 0414 807 821.

Renters, beware the hazardous housemate Renters and their housemates may be too relaxed when it comes to home security with almost 30 per cent admitting to leaving the house with the door unlocked, new research from NRMA Insurance has revealed*. The survey of 300 Australian shared rental households has revealed how hazardous some roommates can be: • 38 per cent have borrowed an item without asking; • 28 per cent have broken something and not told anyone; • 10 per cent have removed a smoke alarm battery and not replaced it; • six per cent have left home with the iron on; and • four per cent have headed out with cooking on the stove. NRMA Insurance spokesperson Sue Hawkins said the research highlighted the additional risks renters with roommates sometimes faced. “Renters may feel like they’re limited in the safety and security steps they can take because they don’t own the property,” she said. “These risks may be compounded further when you have roommates because you can’t influence what others do and how they live. “Around 50 per cent of renters surveyed told us they don’t have home contents insurance. That’s a worry because we’ve found Queensland renters are nearly twice as likely as home owners to make a burglary claim.”

Surveyed roommates also dobbed on each other for not pulling their weight financially (30 per cent), creating mess and not cleaning up (58 per cent) and scoffing someone else’s food and drink (43 per cent). Potecting belongings should be as important for renters as finding the right property and roommate. If renters walked around their place and tallied up the value of all their items, they would probably be surprised at the total cost of replacing everything, NRMA Insurance offers renters contents insurance with the ability for roommates to pool their belongings under one policy or take out separate cover.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship
On September 11, I had the honour, along with local State MP for Glasshouse Andrew Powell and Acting Principal of Beerwah State High School, Jeff Hennessy, to receive 27 young ladies at the Annual Glasshouse Country Debutante Ball in Beerwah. As I said on the night, it was not only great to see 27 young ladies come forward to make their debut, it was also wonderful to see they were able to get 27 young gentlemen to escort them. Young people, especially Generation Y, get a bit of a rough time in my opinion. Recently I heard a lecture which looked at Generation Y. They were held up as technology junkies who have little time for traditional institutions or being committed to relationships or work. Fairly negative stuff. My question would be, ‘Why are young people this way?’ My children are supposed to be Generation Z. Already they are more cluey about technology than I am, and enjoy using that technology

regularly. But both my children love reading, and still enjoy playing in parks, going for bush walks and swimming at the beach. They still enjoy the simple things of life. Many traditional institutions, like the Church, decry the fact that young people don’t come anymore, but perhaps the problem is the traditional institution, not the young people who stay away. The fact that 54 young people, and their families and friends came to an old-fashioned Debutante Ball, where they danced the Pride of Erin and the Gypsy Tap and had a ball (pun intended) in the process, shows that young people aren’t as different from what we were, 20, 40 or 60 years ago. Maybe we need to give them a bit more of our time, our encouragement and understanding as well. After all, who have they learnt from?

New banana bunchy top detector to seek out devastating disease
The fight against a devastating virus affecting worldwide banana plantations has been stepped up by a concerted program aimed at backyard banana growers on the Sunshine Coast. A new Banana Bunchy Top Virus detector has been appointed by the Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) which manages the National Banana Bunchy Top eradication project. Samantha Stringer has taken on the role of detector in the program for the virus which is currently found in South East Queensland and northern New South Wales. National Coordinator of the Project, David Peasley said that the virus was one of the biggest disease concerns for the banana industry in Australia. “Ms Stringer’s efforts will be concentrated on finding infected plants in backyards on the northern Sunshine Coast, particularly around Cooroy, Yandina and Buderim,” Mr Peasley said. “If it spreads to the main growing areas of far north Queensland it would be a disaster for Australia’s banana industry,” he said. He said the virus is hard to detect in the early stages, and needs a trained detector to properly identify it. The virus is carried by banana aphids which leads to stunted plants, deformed bunches and eventual death. The virus can also be spread by infected plant material, which is one of the key reasons for regulations regarding planting of bananas in the community. “Bananas with Bunchy Top are useless, so the more we can rid the Sunshine Coast of this virus then the better off everyone will be,” Mr Peasley said. “We will be closely monitoring commercial plantations in SE Queensland which are our first priority, but our biggest concerns are with backyard gardens in suburbs and hobby farms. However, with the community’s help we can possibly reach our target to eradicate this disease from Australia.” The project is being funded by the national banana industry levy with matching funding from the Australian Government through Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL).

Canine intestinal worms
The treatment and prevention of intestinal parasites is not only paramount for the health and wellbeing of your dog but also your family, especially children. There are four common varieties of intestinal worms that dogs are prone to. Hookworms: Larvae are usually found in faeces or soil contaminated with faeces left from an infected animal. Dogs contract hookworm through ingestion or skin penetration. Once inside the animal the larvae travel to the intestines where they hook onto the intestinal wall and feed on its host’s blood. Hook worm larvae can also enter humans by penetrating through the skin as well; however they stay under the surface of the skin causing skin reactions and infection. Children playing in sandpits or garden areas where cats and dogs toilet are at high risk, so keep sandpits covered and gardens free from animal faeces, and use a reputable intestinal wormer for your dog. Roundworms: Another worm that survives in the intestinal area of your dog, however these worms swim in the partly digested food. Their physical appearance is similar to spaghetti and can occasionally be seen in vomit or faeces from the infected animal. Eggs are spread via infected faeces and soil and also via rodents that your dog may ingest. Puppies are prone to roundworms as well through ingestion of their mother’s milk and can also contract these worms while in-utero. Pregnant dogs require specific worming treatment, your local vet can advise a suitable product and frequency that suits your dog. Roundworms can cause more serious issues if contracted by people. This condition is known as visceral larva migrans. Children are most susceptible by putting contaminated fingers into mouths. The larvae then travel inside the human body and usually finish their travel in the eye. If
with Graeme Lean
the worm enters into the eye the inflammatory reaction can cause blindness. Good hygiene by hand washing and keeping areas clean and free from pet faeces is just as important as regularly medicating for intestinal worms. Tapeworms: There are various varieties of tapeworms that can infect dogs. Transmission can be from ingestion of fleas, and a more serious type of tapeworm commonly known as the Hydatid worm can be transmitted to dogs by feeding on contaminated raw meat and offal meat products. Transmission to humans is usually by ingestion of eggs found in dog faeces. This worm can cause very serious complications to pets as well as humans, especially children. Keeping up a regular worming program and maintaining good hygiene with hand washing is extremely important. Whipworms: These worms are contracted via ingestion of the eggs. Eggs can be picked up from contaminated areas and ground. Common ingestion is by the animal licking its paws or playing with toys that have been exposed to contaminated soil areas. Whipworms eggs are very resilient and can survive harsh exterior conditions for months, even years. These, like the others, live in the intestines and attach to the intestinal wall and suck blood and continue the lifecycle by laying eggs inside the intestines. Human contraction of whipworm is rare. Common symptoms of intestinal worm infection in dogs includes anaemia – pale gums, diarrhoea, weight loss, vomiting, general poor condition, ‘pot belly’ appearance. If you notice any of these symptoms don’t assume it’s ‘just worms’, see your local vet for a professional diagnosis, take a faeces sample with you to your consultation, and maintain a regular worming treatment program. Kids’ animal welfare books now online Students, teachers and parents can now access the popular Bwgcolman Foal animal welfare education books online. The four books in the series, Bwgcolman Foal, Bwgcolman Yearling, Bwgcolman Gelding and Midnight, Bwgcolman Pride, tell the story of how to look after a horse as it grows from foal to adult. Biosecurity Queensland senior policy officer Ian Rodger said the illustrated book series was a key educational tool for primary school children to learn about caring for animals. “The books teach children practical information about caring for horses, including when a horse is mature enough to be ridden and how to ride it properly, with the horse’s welfare in mind,” Mr Rodger said. “Horses are the focus of the books but the welfare messages apply to all animals, so children learn about caring for all creatures great and small. “Engaging and fun, the books are a great way for children to learn about treating animals with care and understanding.”

Mr Rodger said the series was initially developed for young people in Indigenous communities, but had proved to be a popular and important resource for all young people. “Educating children about animal welfare during their formative years is really important as they are the next generation of pet owners and animal carers. “We previously distributed printed copies of the books to over 180 Queensland schools. “Now the series is available online, more students, teachers and parents can access this valuable resource.” To download the books visit www. biosecurity.qld.gov.au, click on ‘Animal welfare & ethics’, then ‘Bwgcolman Foal illustrated books’.

Baptisms and confirmation at Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Family and friends from across Queensland celebrated a special day with Phoebe Baker on Sunday, September 26, as the Congregation and Rev George Woodward received her into the Church family through confirmation and baptism. Phoebe's baby sister Olivia was also baptised, although was oblivious to all the fuss, sleeping through it all. For the Ceremony, Rev George wore a special stole which was given to him in East Timor and Youth Group members assisted in the service.

Council news Council and STePS become bed partners Piles of mattresses reaching skyward could be a thing of the past after council and community group STePS launched a trial last week that will divert over 14,000 old mattresses from landfill each year. The Coast’s first trial is a direct action from the Waste Minimisation Strategy developed in 2009 and will save around four Olympic swimming pools of valuable landfill space each year. From October 1, anyone wanting to dispose of an old mattress can do so at council transfer stations across the region. The cost for disposal is $10.00 for a foam mattress and $20.00 for a sprung mattress. STePS employees will dismantle and recycle the foam, timber and steel by hand and all proceeds
will go directly into funding the collection and destruction of the mattresses. Environment Chair Cr Keryn Jones said mattresses take up about four Olympic swimming pools of space in our landfills each year. “It makes so much sense to save that space, recycle the valuable resources and help out the community at the same time,” Cr Jones said. “STePS is a real Sunshine Coast success story and we are very excited and proud to work with them. “In 20 years, they have grown from a group of local parents assisting kids with special needs to where they are now one of Australia’s premier disability agencies helping people find work and skills through a national network.”
News in brief Less than one month to lodge tax returns The ATO is reminding people there is less than one month left for individuals to lodge their own tax returns. As the normal October 31 deadline is a Sunday individuals can lodge the next business day, November 1. Acting Tax Commissioner Jennie Granger said one of the easiest and quickest ways to lodge your tax return is using e-tax. E-tax can save you time by downloading information from third parties directly into your return such as bank interest, payment summaries and government payments. So far this year over 1.8 million people have taken advantage of e-tax, which can be downloaded from the ATO website at www.ato. gov.au “We encourage people to double check their returns before submitting them. Some common errors we see include supplying incorrect bank details, forgetting to include name changes from a pervious year’s return and forgetting to include income from a previous job,” Ms Granger said. “This year the ATO will be looking out for fraudulent refund claims, with risk models expanded to help detect potentially overstated or fraudulent claims.
Wanted – your healthy ideas
The titles of Queensland's healthiest community, school and workplace and a $1.6 million prize pool are up for grabs as part of the 2010 Healthy Queensland Awards. "The goal of the Healthy Queensland Awards is to reward communities, schools and workplaces that help Queenslanders be more active, make healthier food choices, achieve and maintain a healthy weight, be smoke free and encourage responsible drinking," Premier Anna Bligh said. "One of the key ambitions of the Queensland Government is to make Queenslanders Australia's healthiest people as part of our Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland initiative. "These awards give organisations the opportunity to propose programs that promote improved health and well-being or plans for 'healthy' infrastructure such as bicycle and walking paths, sun shades or sporting equipment." Deputy Premier and Minister for Health Paul
Tax time tips Be aware of tax scams During tax time it is important to be aware of tax scams which are designed to steal a person’s personal information and money. Be wary of approaches from people you do not know who are seeking personal information, financial details or tax file number details. The ATO will never send emails asking people to provide their personal information or credit card details. If you think you have been a victim of a scam, and have provided your credit or banking details in the process, contact your financial institution immediately. Take advantage of Tax Help Low income earners are encouraged to take advantage of the ATO’s free Tax Help program to assist them in preparing and lodging their tax returns. Volunteers are available to help people prepare and lodge their tax return and understand what can be claimed as a tax deduction and how to claim it. Tax Help is available in all capital cities and many regional areas across Australia. For information on how to contact your nearest Tax Help centre phone the ATO on 13 28 61.
Lucas said the Queensland Government was pleased to once again partner with Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland (KAB-Q) for the Healthy Queensland Awards. "These awards are important because they motivate Queenslanders to work together to create healthier places to live, work, learn and play," Mr Lucas said. "The Bligh Government is committed to rewarding communities, workplaces and schools for their healthy living initiatives and motivating them to continue their good work." The awards offer prize money of up to $1 million for communities, $500,000 for schools and $100,000 for workplaces. More than 330 applications were submitted in 2009 and more are expected to enter this year. Applications close December 15. For more information, entry forms and guidelines visit www.kabq.org.au <http://www.kabq.org.au/>
