Hi everyone Last week I attended a business networking function at the Big Barrel Winery which brought together business people from the Glasshouse Country, Maleny and Montville Chambers of Commerce. It was a really good night and a great opportunity for the businesses on our side of the highway to show what a dynamic and enthusiastic bunch we are. This year has obviously been tough for many local businesses as the trickle-on affect from the Global Economic Crisis makes its impact felt. But as one local business person said to me recently, succeeding in business at the moment is just about getting through this time and coming out the other side still operating! The reason I am bleating on about how tough things are - is because I want to remind locals

how important it is to be spending locally. When you spend money with a local business you help keep local people employed, you spend less of petrol (and driving further to possibly save cash is certainly not great for the environment), helps keep the range of retail and services available locally and importantly contributes much to our community spirit. Local spending also allows local businesses to donate to and support the schools, community and sporting groups in our local area. So make sure you consider where you spend your valuable dollars this Christmas, as it is vital in keeping our community strong and vibrant. Regards,

This week in gcnews 6

Face lift on the cards for Glass House

The centre of the Glass House business district, Bruce Parade, looks set to receive a major facelift, with draft plans being released to key stakeholders ahead of a second round of consultation planned for later this year. Divisional Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said a quarter of a million dollars has been allocated

in this year’s budget for the project, which has been in development for some time. “This is a project I have been working on in GlassHouse township for many years," she said. Cr Grosskreutz said council had, over time, spent considerable funds in Glass House on various elements, including the Information and Interpretative centre, Uniting Park, public art, cont. on page 4 playgrounds and road works.

cont. from page 3 “This stage is to look at the way the central parking operates and improve on it as the existing central parking is quite dysfunctional,” Cr Grosskreutz said. The draft plans involve a radical change to car parking, as well as a narrowing of the main thoroughfare along Bruce Parade, and complementary streetscaping. “We also have a new entry statement as a separate project for both GlassHouse and Beerwah which are being designed. These projects are all in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce as the lead business association in the region.

Recent concerns about ‘fears for the future of hinterland towns’ appears to be a simple case of misunderstanding. Last week, the townships of Beerwah, Glass House and Landsborough made headlines in a local daily paper after council’s strategy and planning committee endorsed development plans that could see up to 300 new homes built in the hinterland.

18 Free St, Beerwah • A-Grade Mechanical Repairs & Log Book Servicing on all types of vehicles • Disc & Drum Machining

Community representatives expressed concern that they had not been given notification of the plans, and that the development approvals could impact on the amenity of each of the townships. D0669

The sites relate to Fullerton Road, Glass House, Myla Road, Landsborough, and Old Gympie Road, Beerwah. “These are not new town plans, but have taken a couple of years with all the other business of amalgamation to get to,” Cr Grosskreutz said. Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president Kel McNamara said he was ‘extremely relieved’ to hear that the report considered at last week’s Strategy and Planning committee meeting was old business.

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president Kel McNamara said he was pleased to see the project coming to fruition. “The town centre (Bruce Parade) looks drab compared to the entry statement, the Visitor Information and Interpretive Centre, so it will be good to see the area revitalised, to better complement it,” Mr McNamara said. Local businesses and other interested parties are invited to attend tonight’s Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce meeting at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club from 5.30pm. Hot auction action at Landsborough

B

Feathers were flying at the Council’s livestock holding yards on Gympie Street North, Landsborough last Friday, when Sunshine Coast Council held an auction to sell impounded and unclaimed livestock.

There was keen interest from the three bidders for the animals on offer – which on this day amounted to one black pig and two roosters. Council regularly hold these auctions, either at the Landsborough yards or at the Sippy Creek Road pound, with a notice published in the region’s daily newspaper the day before the auction is to be held. According to a Council spokesperson, the last auction saw the sale of four prime steers, a large bull and two goats. “Goats are one of the most common animal sold through the auctions,” said the spokesperson. Auction attendee Ernie from Maleny said that the auctions can be a great way to pick up a couple of decent stock animals. “You have to know what you’re looking at, otherwise you can end up paying more than the animal is worth”, Ernie said. But with the roosters selling for a dollar each and the pig for only 70 dollars, you’d have to think that the buyers got a pretty good deal. Potential buyers need to be aware that standard auction rules apply. You need to pay in full at the auction (cash, cheque or eftpos) and you need to take the animals away by the end of the day. The auctions are a great way to rehouse animals which Council can’t reconnect with their owners or which owners have abandoned. With Christmas so close, one hopes though that Porky and his two feathered friends have found caring homes and will make it through the festive season intact. If you happen to lose a stock animal – such as a horse, cow, goat or even a rooster – Council suggests that you contact their Customer Service Centre to report the details. Once they have the type of animal, its identifying features and where it went missing, Council can inform their animal management officers to be on the lookout. And if the animal ends up at one of the Council pounds, it can then be easily reunited with you. If you see a stray livestock animal wandering around a public place, all you need to do is report it through the Council Customer Service Centre. They’ll take all the details and assign an officer to deal with it. The Customer Service Centre number is 5475 7272 or after hours 5475 7277.

Something a bit different at Beerwah Library this month If you’d like to see some art that’s a little different, be sure to visit Beerwah Library until November 27. Her favourite subjects are landscapes and space. Time isn’t an issue for Kim as she can create her spray can art pieces in just seven minutes, and other pieces anywhere from half an hour to an hour. Passion fuels equine education Rebecca Ambroze and her daughter Jes from Beerwah are on a mission to try and stop the over breeding and neglect of horses. To help spread the message they started the Yeehaa Horse Care Clinic to teach young people how to look after, and ride horses. “I became aware of the problem six to eight years ago,” Rebecca said. “People think having a horse is a great idea, but it’s 90 per cent work and 10 per cent enjoyment. I’d rescued a number of horses and I came to the conclusion I could keep rescuing horses for the rest of my life and I wouldn’t really put a dent in the numbers that are there. “So I decided to look at it from a different angle and educate the public on how to look after them, at least then people know what they’re getting into before they buy a horse or get a horse.” Most of the 20 horses that Rebecca and Jes use at the Clinic are horses they have rescued over the last six years. The worst cases include horses in dirt paddocks with no feed, no water, with bad injuries that need medical attention. “We use mainly rescue horses that have been neglected in some sort of way and show the members of the Clinic how we can fix the problem at hand but more importantly, how to prevent it from happening,” Rebecca said.

Hannah, Rebecca and Lauchlan She believes the biggest mistake people make when getting a horse is not having a paddock they can have long term or not checking out assignment / agistment properly. Other issues include feed (because they can’t live on grass alone), and feet and teeth, which are all ongoing expenses. “I want people to know that owning a horse is a very big responsibility and you should think about it or do a course, be involved first before you make the decision of buying one,” she said. In the aim to stop the neglect of horses, any volunteers or donations of equipment or feed are welcome and hugely appreciated in the support to care for horses in our local community, said Rebecca. “I would also like to thank Holcim Sunrock and Mooloolah Sand and Gravel. They donated sand and gravel and delivered it for the arena for the children, which was absolutely wonderful.” If you would like to know more about the Yeehaa Horse Care Clinic, which charges a small membership fee, phone 5439 0907, 0422 666 775 or 0466 041 365.

Great tractors with options for all situations

On November 8, in support of Zambian Outreach, over 80 people gathered at Peachester to enjoy a delicious luncheon while five charming ladies, sizes 10 to 22, presented a fashion parade, which proved even we of mature age and buxom girth can still look chic at reasonable cost. Combine with this a silent auction, the sale of crafts and plants and a wishing well, and you can be sure a terrific time was had by all. All the money raised will go to support orphans and the building of a medical clinic for 34,000 slum residents in Lusaka, Zambia. Zambian Outreach is an on-going, not-for-profit organisation which supports widows and orphans, providing nutrition, education and healthcare, and training them in life skills whereby they gain financial independence. Already 120 widows have completed their training in small business management. Another 100 widows are in the training program.

Guests enjoyed the fashion parade in aid of Zambian Outreach For further information on Zambian Outreach you can contact David Christmas on 5494 9109, email admin@zambianoutreach.com or website www.zambianoutreach.com The fashion show was presented by Fashionation of Woodford. Students Mentoring Students at Beerwah State School Contributed by Margaret Grambauer – Learning Support Teacher

Beerwah's Students Mentoring Students program

This year in term three and term four, Beerwah State School initiated a Students Mentoring Students program focussing on improving reading. In term three some students in Year 1 were invited to participate in the program and in term four any student in Year 1 and Year 2 who wished to attend was made welcome. Jacinta Dwan and Abbey Gaudern, from Year 7, volunteered to lead the mentoring sessions which include individual reading with students,

playing games which focus on letters and sounds, using computers to access programs which help students read and spell words, and as a group, being introduced to a range of texts. The sessions are being held in the library and computer lab on four mornings a week before school. The students participating in the before school sessions are enjoying reading a range of literature and are becoming more confident readers.

Local Immanuel musician recognised with award Immanuel Lutheran College has acknowledged a student musician from Peachester with a prestigious music award at a ceremony at the school last week. Year 11 student Daniel Jonas from Peachester received the 2010 Kerry-Anne McDavitt Music Award, which is presented each year to a Year 11 Immanuel student who has displayed outstanding qualities in the areas of leadership, commitment and dedication to music. “Immanuel’s music program nurtures each of our students’ unique musical abilities. We are privileged to have many outstanding student performers as well as a dedicated group of superb music teachers and tutors,” said Principal David Bliss. Kerry-Anne McDavitt is an Old Scholar who graduated in 2005. The McDavitt family provides ongoing funding for the award to acknowledge the College’s role in instilling a lifelong love of music and performance in many young Sunshine Coast musicians.

Doing business

Bob’s Butchery – where quality counts

Your finance fixer

With interest rates on the rise, and more economic grief being forecast, there has never been a better time to consider your financial health. Before you do, speak to your trusted, local experts at Nicholsons Finance Brokers, who can help guide you through the maze of interest rates, fixed and variable loans, and where to find the best deals. Keith Nicholson has 10 years Keith Nicholson experience as an independent arranger of home loans, car loans, and any other type of personal or business finance. And because his service is paid for by the banks he works with, fees are not passed on to you, the customer. Keith said now is the perfect time to consider fixing your home loan rate or refinancing to a cheaper loan, as some of the banks are currently paying any costs associated with moving your loan. “Banks are keen to do business, and we have the knowledge and experience about who is competitive and best suited to our clients’ individual needs,” Keith said. “Because we have so many different lenders to choose from, we are open and honest in our recommendations to our clients,” Keith said. “We work for our customers. “They are what keep us in business and part of our local community, and we rely on ensuring they walk away happy and confident with our service – unlike the banks that exist to satisfy shareholders or executives on fat salaries.” Keith said the satisfaction of seeing his clients achieve their financial and personal goals of home ownership and financial security is well worth it. "As long as we can continue to do that, and our customers walk away with a better deal, than we know we are doing the right thing,” Keith said. So do you and your family a favour and give Keith a call on 0416 178 453 or 5494 8680 and make a time to discuss your financial health.

Hi all, hope you are all well, happy and in great health. Where has the year gone? Who can believe Christmas is just around the corner. With so many competing demands, we are all looking for ways to save time and money, and that is where I come in. Here at Bob’s Butchery we strive to keep up with all things that are not only good and healthy but also easy to cook, and exciting to eat. In my home and most likely yours, the most important people in our lives sit at our table every day. We only stock meat that is of the highest quality, robust in flavour and good for you. Keep a keen eye out for our advertisements every week. We give you the best price and quality that your dollar can buy. We also sell free range eggs, organic and free range chickens, grass fed yearling beef, ducks, Victorian spring lambs and happy sty raised pork, all of which have no added hormones or steroids. We sell a wide range of seafood – order any time for the next day pick up. Your fresh prawns, bugs, crays, crabs, oysters, mussels, fresh fish fillets or whole fish, all wild caught, so place your order today for Christmas. We’ll also be selling our double wood smoked honeyed leg hams. Free range turkey orders must be in early or you will miss out. Have a great day, we hope to see you soon at Bob’s Butchery.

After being a Baker and owning his own Bakery for 47 years, Ivan Woodhouse decided it was time for a change. He thought he would like to mow people’s lawns but was unsure how to start on his own. “Then I saw an ad in the paper for James’ Home Services Lawn Mowing Franchise. After reading about James’ Home Services I decided James’ was the professional, reputable company I was looking for. After starting my business with James’ I haven’t looked back. I enjoy working for a company who constantly supports its Franchisees whether it is with the National Support Centre, ongoing Marketing or a Business Coach. I’m 68 ½ years young and love that it is my business, I can set my own hours and still have time for Golf!”

Trophies and tales at car club dinner Contributed by John Jennings

Old-time vehicle enthusiasts gathered at Beerwah RSL for the Sunshine Coast Antique Car Club’s annual president’s dinner on Saturday night. More than 130 members, spouses and guests were on hand for the presentation of trophies and service awards for the year. Guest Speaker was David James of Brisbane, President of the Queensland Historic Motoring Council who outlined a number of items of interest to collectors including proposed changes regarding the fitting and wearing of seat belts in older vehicles. President Trevor Shields, of the club’s Bribie Island division, introduced a special entertainment item – the Beerburrum State School Choir with music teacher Elizabeth Loving. The choir was formed earlier this year and the car club dinner was its first commercial engagement. One of the highlights of the club’s trophy and service award presentations was the introduction of the inaugural perpetual Reg Wilkie Memorial Touring Trophy, to be presented each year by his widow Desma Wilkie. The car club, formed 47 years ago and is the oldest outside the metropolitan area. It contains 230 members who own a range of vehicles including a 1912 Renault, 1928 Model A Ford, 1919 Essex, 1913 Little 4 Roadster and a 1928 Chevrolet plus a host of later model vehicles of popular makes. Future club events for this year include a veteran and vintage run to the Maroochydore Botanical Gardens on November 28, the Christmas Break-up at Nambour on December 5 and the Christmas Lights Run at Bribie Island on December 18.

What do you do with your empty drink cans? Throw them in the general council rubbish bin collection, drop them on the side of the road, or save them for Beerwah Lions can recycling project? Encourage children to keep their area clean, get them collecting cans and as a bonus, they can earn some pocket money by bringing them to Lions Can recycling. Can recycling, on the first Saturday of each month, has been extremely hard and smelly work for those Lions who have been nominated as the project volunteers. Well over 300 kg’s of aluminium cans was received on November 6. As a large volume of this days’ collection was donated, Lions say very big THANK YOU to those generous donors. All monies raised from the on selling of aluminium go to benefit many recognised and worthwhile local charities. A list of donations to charities from the last year of activities has been previously published. Remember the first Saturday morning of each month. Christmas is coming so remember to visit the Beerwah Lions fund raising auxiliary morning street stall on Saturday, November 27. There are always delicious freshly baked homemade goodies, pot plants, books and a variety of bric-a-brac and giftware and goods that are available for purchase, together with a friendly no cost smile to greet you. This auxiliary donates through their Lions Club to various charities such as the Look and See centre, Lions Emergency Accommodation refuge, animal shelter etc. Beerwah Lions will be involved in the Glasshouse Rotary’s inaugural Glasshouse Country Festival in June 2011. This is a great opportunity to really get the Glasshouse Country area on the map, making it a place not to be missed and one that visitors will just have to visit. All community areas and commercial businesses can benefit from this week long event which coincides with Queensland Week June 4 10, so we all need to work together co-operatively.

On October 26, Martin Pedder had a successful launch of his book ‘I Pilate’. His work covers, in detail, the life of that well known figure in history, Pontius Pilate. In reading this work, it is most apparent that much time and research by Martin contributed to this fine publication. Vicki Blaik displays much talent with her story ‘Forever Siblings’. Her characters are finely portrayed as she tells a story of faded gentility and dementia. Shirley Mooris contribution was highly amusing. She wrote of a young city couple and their move to the outback. New to country life, the young wife made delicate sandwiches for the swaggie who had toiled long and land chopping a copious amount of wood. He was far from impressed. Eric Rich weighed in with his work ‘Tubes of Justice’, a story of suspense and intrigue that Alfred Hitchcock would have been pleased to film. Finally, John Wright read his story of an unfortunate accident in a sewage system which involved a bar of chocolate. His contribution was entitled ‘Thirsty Dangerous Waters’. This concluded an interesting, entertaining and informative meeting. Beerwah Writers Group meets at the Beerwah Library every second Friday at 10.00am. Feel welcome to join us, our next meeting is on November 19.

THE

Great Outdoors Everything motocross, right here in Beerwah

There’s nothing worse than travelling all over the coast in search of the perfect gift to then have to assemble it when you get home. Worse still, is when the assembled item doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do! If you’ve learnt from past mistakes, you know it pays to shop locally. When it comes to bicycles, Erek Smith from Beerwah Cycles is well accustomed to not only assembling, but also servicing and ‘trouble shooting’ just about any brand of bike. And with Christmas just around the corner, come in and have a chat to Erek about the best type of bike to suit your needs. By buying locally, Erek will not only assemble your bike, but also offers a free six week service to make sure it's cycling smoothly. Combined with the manufacturers warranty, you can rest assured you are making a quality purchase with all the after sales service to back it up. With more than a decade of experience in the industry, Erek knows just about all there is to know about bikes, so if you don’t like the thought of travelling all over the coast to come home with a bike in a box and limited after sales service, then Beerwah Cycles should be top of your list. Open 8.30am 5.00pm Monday to Friday and from 8.30am - 1.00pm Saturday, phone 5494 0111 or email Erek at beerwahcycles@gmail.com, or visit www.beerwahcycles.com.au

If you’re looking to put something under the Christmas tree that will really put a smile on the face of the dirt bike enthusiast in your family, make sure you head down to Dirt Thirst, in Simpson Street, Beerwah, and check out their great range. Since opening in the hinterland six months ago, owner and motocross fanatic Brock Stroud has seen his business go from strength to strength, and is now ready to launch his own Dirt Thirst label of clothing and armour. Keep an eye out for the unique, affordable range which is expected to hit the shelves in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Brock said he is keen to support the local riding community, and he is always keen for suggestions from customers on any new products they want to see, as well as additional services. Did you know Dirt Thirst also stocks tyres, with brands including Maxxis, Pirelli and Dunlop? And now they also have a new tyre changing machine in store? For everything to do with dirt bikes and motocross, you can’t go past Dirt Thirst, the only dedicated motocross shop in the hinterland. Call in and see Brock at 3/36 Simpson Street, Beerwah, or phone 5439 0698.

Binge Drinking

Rail upgrade petition

Community groups and individuals are invited to make comments and suggestions on the Community Sponsorship Fund aspect of the Australian Government’s ‘National Binge Drinking Strategy’. The aims of the Community Sponsorship Fund are expected to be: to reduce the exposure to young people and children to alcohol advertising, remove links between sporting and cultural events and alcohol, to provide support for community organisations to provide alcohol-free environments, and to reduce irresponsible and risky alcohol consumption. The consultation paper can be found at www.alcohol.gov.au Comment is required by November 19.

Nominate a Great Australian

NOW is the time to nominate a great local Australian! Those who know a local resident who works hard in a voluntary role for the community are encouraged to lodge a nomination for the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards, which will be announced and presented at a special function on Australia Day. Australia Day in 2011 will mark the 11th holding of the awards. For a nomination form, collect one from my office at Buddina or phone 5444 4888 and speak to Richard.

Male Carers

The invaluable work done by male carers in the community has been highlighted in a new DVD, titled ‘Men Care Too!’. The DVDs follows the stories of five carers from the veterans community and highlights the fact that caring can be physically and emotionally exhausting and is a vital community service that is not often widely recognised. Copies of the DVD are available from the National Carers Support Service by phoning 03-9396 9500 or by emailing ncss@carersvictoria.org.au For information about support services available to carers, visit: www.dva.gov.au/health_and_wellbeing/Pages/caring.aspx

Enough is enough. The Bligh Labor Government continues to show total disregard for the challenges Coast residents face with commuter transport. The major blow out on the completion of the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade is further evidence that they really don’t care. The job is not even half complete and the north coast rail network will not function to its full capability until the whole line is upgraded. An online petition has now been set up calling on the government to revise the timeframes published in the SEQ Infrastructure Plan and Program, and deliver the completed upgrades through to Nambour by 2021. Sign the online petition by using the following link - http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/view/ EPetitions_QLD/CurrentEPetitions.aspx?LIndex=1

Christmas card competition

I wrote in an earlier column about my Christmas card drawing competition that local schools were given the opportunity to participate in. The best seven entries from this competition will feature on my electorate Christmas card and calendar that will be sent to thousands of households and businesses in the electorate. All I can say is that we have some fantastic budding artists in our community. The drawings were of such high standard and we had a tough job selecting the winning entries. My thanks go out to the schools that chose to participate and to all of the students that submitted an entry. Keep an eye out for the card and calendar in your letterbox from the first week in December.

Driving for life – discussion paper

The Member for Maroochydore, and Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Ms Fiona Simpson MP, has recently published a discussion paper on learner drivers. The LNP believes all Queenslanders should be safe on our roads and is committed to helping our young people to become competent licensed drivers. This discussion paper invites young drivers and their parents to share their thoughts on how we can improve driver training and improve the safety on our roads. A copy of the discussion paper can be found on www.fionasimpson.com.au – your comments and feedback can be emailed directly to Fiona at Maroochydore@parliament.qld.gov.au

Your Grandparents created our world, built our society and fought our wars. Help us celebrate and share their amazing lives and stories. They may be a little slower these days, but there was a time when our grandparents, (we call them Australia’s ‘Great Grand People’), were busy building our nation. To celebrate their lives we want to collect their stories and share them with everyone throughout November. We’re calling it ‘Great Grand People’ month and to make it happen we need your help. We need you to upload your grandparents’ special photo and story so we can showcase them on a dedicated ‘Great Grand People’ website. The photo and story that receives the most online likes

will win.

The grand prize package includes... A beautiful photography portrait session with Award Winning Brisbane photographer Renee Brazel. Free Tree Day - this Saturday at Landsborough

Walking Tracks guide

I will be giving away free trees to residents of Division 1 on Saturday, November 19 at Railway Park, Landsborough, between 8.00am - 10.00am. There will be a choice of trees, natives and ground covers and a council horticulturalist will be on hand to answer all your questions about the growing conditions and best locations for your new plants. Please bring your rates notice for stamping. If you have notices from past years these will be honoured as well. Residents are eligible for two free trees per rates notice. Everyone is welcome and I look forward to seeing you there.

Pick up your copy of the new ‘A Guide to Walking Tracks on the Sunshine Coast’ from Council’s customer service centre, or your local tourist information centre. The brochure provides information on 27 different tracks – from beach, coastal, wetland, forest to scenic and lookout trails that weave their way through our wonderful natural coastal and hinterland environments. So get out and breathe some fresh air and enjoy some of the Coast’s most beautiful scenery.

Positive Ageing survey

Mosquito control Council continued treatment for salt marsh mosquitoes with spraying on November 8. Light trapping numbers show a decrease in mosquito numbers from last year, however as a local, I know in some areas this is hard to believe. I have asked for a report to Council, prior to budget discussions, as I would like to be assured how much funding is allocated in the program and where it is being spent across the region. It will also provide an indication of how much funding may be needed to boost the program into the future. The council has a student from the University of Queensland researching three hinterland towns for fresh water mosquitoes. These mozzies are showing up in larger numbers than usual and may be breeding in drainage areas and water in our backyards. As council has only previously sprayed for salt water mosquitoes we will need to find further funds for the fresh water pests. In the meantime we all need to check out areas in our own yards where water might be pooling in this rainy period to assist wherever possible. The fresh water mosquitoes are showing up as almost half of the numbers being trapped.

We are all getting older, to help us maintain a healthy lifestyle, and enjoy quality social connections, Council is inviting community members from across the region, and the ageing sector, to voice their concerns and aspirations, and have your say on how council plans for our ageing population. This will help Council plan for the needs and aspirations of the region’s rapidly growing ageing population. Visit Council’s website to complete the two surveys and go into the draw to win one of three signed copies of Jessica Watson’s book, True Spirit.

Interactive web chat service goes live How easy it is now for residents to ‘chat’ online with a customer service officer and have your issue dealt with by a real person online from the comfort of your own home. Council has launched a new live web chat service which will provide this live ‘chat’ via a simple online dialogue box from the ‘Contact Council’ web page. This new service is available Monday to Friday between 8.15am and 5.00pm (excluding public holidays).

Living well

Beware of cheap Christmas lights

Photographer's corner with Marg and John

Far from the madding crowd! An excursion into bushland, far away from the sights and sounds of the city can provide a variety of landscapes to challenge the photographer. Booloumba Falls in the Conondale Ranges was the destination for several Grafx Group enthusiasts. The road in to the carpark is accessible only by four wheel drive and there was plenty of water over the road in some places. The short walk to the waterfall was easy enough (round trip three kilometres) and the waterfall put on a good display after recent heavy rains.

Booloumba Falls by John The large rock and the grass in the foreground have been carefully placed to give a sense of depth to this image which was taken on a Canon EOS 400D camera with an ISO rating of 200. It was shot in manual mode at f11 at 1/30s. For information on this and other walks, check out: www.exploreconondales.com Grafx Group meets each Thursday at the Beerwah Library.

Apology We regret to inform that due to a clerical error, the Auscare Glasshouse Mountains Pharmacy Christmas Catalogue has been sent out earlier than anticipated. The promotional period for our Christmas Catalogue runs from the 2nd - 24th December, but the Pharmacy is willing to honour the catalogue prices now, while stocks last. November specials are also available in-store now. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Google launches special search results for poison control and suicide hotlines

FRESH COOKED & WHOLESALE

The Bligh Government has urged Queenslanders to resist the lure of cheap or second-hand Christmas lights because of the electrical dangers they can pose. Industrial Relations Minister Cameron Dick said cheap lights bought from markets, garage sales or the Internet could appear to be a bargain but they were not worth the risk. “Just like a Christmas cracker, you don’t know what you’ll get when you buy cheap or secondhand lights,” Mr Dick said. “Play it safe and only buy Christmas lights that meet Australian standards.” With Christmas approaching, the Electrical Safety Office is reminding the public to play it safe by only buying lights approved for sale in Australia and using them strictly in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. The Electrical Safety Office is Queensland’s electrical safety regulator and part of the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.

Google has launched special search results for searches relating to poisoning and suicide in Australia. When you need to find the hotline for poison control, chances are you need to find it fast. When you search on Google.com.au for a term like ‘poisoning’ you’ll see a special search result at the very top of the page — a large red phone icon and the words: “For a poison emergency in Australia call 13 11 26.” This number will put you in direct touch with the Poisons Information Centre, a 24/7 hotline service accessible from anywhere in Australia. Similarly, a search on Google.com.au for certain terms related to suicide will turn up a large red phone icon and the words: “Need help? In Australia, call 13 11 14.” This number will put callers in touch with Lifeline Australia, a 24-hour, confidential national suicide prevention hotline to support anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Australian partners, Lifeline and the Poisons Information Centre, have welcomed the initiative. Lifeline’s Acting CEO Angus Clelland said Lifeline is always looking for innovative ways to help more people who are experiencing an emotional crisis. “This initiative by Google will assist us to reach more people in need, so we are very proud to be partnering with them on this important measure. “We know it will, quite literally, help us save more lives.”

A DVD aimed at saving children’s lives from common accidents at home is now available. Fair Trading Minister Peter Lawlor said the DVD was designed to highlight the risks of furniture stability and tip-over injuries, and to provide carers with the know-how to make homes safer for children. “It is a tragic fact that furniture and appliance-related injuries to children under five years of age account for an estimated 180 emergency presentations in Queensland each year, according to the Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit,” Mr Lawlor said. Mr Lawlor said the Office of Fair Trading had embarked on a Safety matters campaign to raise awareness of this issue and highlight simple and effective strategies that both parents and the furniture industry can put in place to reduce furniture stability hazards. As part of the campaign, the Bligh Government is offering parents and carers a free, four-minute DVD on how to make their home safer and prevent furniture stability injuries to children. It will also be made available to Kidsafe Australia, child care centres, ante natal classes, libraries, Members of Parliament and Fair Trading offices. Warning labels will be made available to manufacturers and suppliers for placement on high-risk products. The Office of Fair Trading had produced a wide range of information on product safety and children, including the seven easy steps fliers. Topics include blinds and curtain cords, bunk bed safety, furniture safety, holiday accommodation, portable cot safety, safe and correctly fitted child restraints, safe sleep for your baby and treadmill safety around children. For more information on product safety, or for a copy of ‘Climb, tumble and fall - steps to furniture safety’ visit www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au or call 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

Lighting Up Glasshouse Country

What do you get when you mix more than 1,000 people armed with empty boxes and fields of plump, juicy strawberries? A massive fundraising success story for a well deserving charity, CanTeen, that’s what. When Gowinta opened its strawberry fields to the masses recently as a fundraiser for CanTeen, little did they realise locals’ passion for both strawberries and a good cause. The inaugural event was such a success, plans are already well underway to ensure next year’s event is even more fruitful!

If you love lighting up your home and sharing the joy with others, why don’t you let us know your address, either for the competition or just for public viewing. A list of all the Christmas light displays will be published in the Wednesday, December 15 and 21 editions. You said it Letters to the Editor

Letters are printed at the discretion of the editor, Lea Parkes and her policy is to include letters which focus on issues and are not about personally attacking other people. For a letter to be considered for printing it must be accompanied by the name, address and phone number of the sender. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Preference is given to letters under 300 words. Letters may be edited to make them more readable, but the meaning will not be changed. Regular correspondents will be limited to alternate issues to give everyone a chance to have their say. Letters must meet the Friday 12.00noon deadline. Views expressed in the 'You said it' page are those of the writer - and not this publication. Please send your letters to letters@gcnews.com.au or fax to 5494 6399.

Coonowrin Road development

This letter is to warn Glass House residents about a major development (re-zoning) that will impact on them and the tourists who have just started to discover this area. Council has given preliminary consent to the rezoning of the pineapple patch on the corner of Fullerton and Coonowrin Road into 63 lots. This is despite the objections of the 151 residents who signed a petition against it (which is a huge amount for such a small town), and the 18 residents who wrote letters against it. Only three Councillors had the guts to vote against it. Those who voted for it were Cr Tatton; Cr Dickson; Cr Blumel; Cr Hungerford; Cr Grosskreutz; Cr Brennan and Cr McKay. Council states “It is acknowledged that in comparison to the current use of the subject site as a pineapple farm, this form of development will impact on views of Glasshouse Mountains along this portion of the Scenic Route.” So why was this proposal ever considered? The fact that Coonowrin Road is identified as a Scenic Route is ‘deferred’ because “When considering whether the development complies with the above development principles, it is the subsequent development of these lots, and not the reconfiguration itself, that will determine the impact on the scenic route.” The proposal should “protect site attributes, such as significant vegetation and views.” And Council in a simplistic manner have assumed that as long as “vegetated buffers are provided to Coonowrin Road and Fullerton Road in accordance with Council’s resolution” then everything will be all right. Yet these buffers have

not yet been reflected in the plans submitted for consideration. Why not? I’m sorry but I don’t think this is going to hide the potential ugliness of 63 houses squashed onto these lots. Council does suggest a 1.8 metre high dividing fence, screened by vegetation as a condition of consent, yet fails to include this in the Assessment Manager Conditions. If this mistake is rectified then I sincerely hope this would be a timber fence and not a Colorbond one! I don’t quite understand how they can give preliminary approval to something before they’ve even considered the public submissions on the town planning amendment to the Caloundra City Plan 2004 which would change the designation of these lots from Rural Residential Settlement to Township Residential. This makes the latter process a farce (tail wagging the dog). I don’t have time to spend fighting this, but if there are people willing to fight on I suggest you contact the councillors to find why the voted the way they did, and whether there is a right of appeal. Bill and Misao Rogers Glass on Glasshouse

Beerwah overpass tidy up

Council is continuing to meet with officials of Department of Transport and Main Roads to cement a maintenance schedule to maintain the appearance of the verges of the Beerwah Overpass. In the interest of making something happen faster I offered to bring my own brush cutter out of the shed and do it myself! The council parks team will now do the work whilst the Council and State Government Management sort out the financial arrangements. Cr Anna Grosskreutz Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council

Take back your power people

So, the State government (Anna Bligh and co) has approved another pay rise for themselves. Gee whiz, they must be having a hard time keeping up with their expenses. What with the power and water bills going through the roof, not to mention the increased costs of food and every aspect of living really, how on earth are they expected to pay for it all? Hang on – the people of Qld can pay for it. They won’t mind working harder and longer for less. Surely there’s something leftover from their mortgage repayments or rents, increased levies, fees and taxes and what about small business? They get it easy – better get them paying more

Local resident Brian Aitken was pleased to receive a very special envelope in the mail recently, all the way from the United States. Flat Ashlyn, pictured with Brian in our GCNews office recently, has been on an around the world adventure of late, starting out from Woodfield Elementary School in Waterford, Wisconsin, in the United States. Brian received a letter from second grade student Ashlyn, with specific instructions to take Flat Ashlyn on a local adventure, before sending her back to her the students at Woodfield Elementary. The students have been reading the story ‘Flat Stanley’ by Jeff Brown, and have been inspired to undertake a similar journey with their own ‘Flat Ashlyn’ character. before local councillors get their share of what’s left. Profit, nah – that’s a bank term. Come on people, this is a democracy. It’s time for us to stand up for our way of living, not the government’s way of us living. Use your voices, feet and pens to say no. Say no to them taking our resources without consultation and compensation (e.g. water) Say no to them taking our right to local govt (e.g. amalgamation). Say no to them destroying our way of living (fees charges on beaches, camping, parking meters etc). Say no to them overriding our local wisdom (Caloundra South, Pumistone passage). Say no to increases that impact our way of living (e.g. loss of fuel subsidy). Say no to the destruction of eco systems (e.g. polluting ground water, destruction of koala habitats, pipelines etc). The next time food, water, electricity, and state government fees go up, remember, pollies on either side of the fence are anticipating their next pay rise. C Harding Beerwah

Keep to a budget A budget can help you take control of your money and make sensible decisions on how you spend it. Start by recording every time that you spend money, from big expenses to small. Without this, you won’t get a realistic picture of where your money is going. Taking a critical look at what you spend will also help you to make cutbacks that will enable you to pay extra off your mortgage. The more you pay off now, the easier your mortgage will be to manage in the future and this could save you thousands of dollars in interest every year.

Cut down on credit Credit card interest rates are often very expensive – sometimes over 20 per cent per annum. The best way to use a credit card is to pay off the FULL BALANCE of your credit card each month. That way you benefit from the convenience without paying punishing interest rates. Priced at under $600,000 this very neat and tidy brick home consists of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, recent renovations with new paint, carpet and tiles as well as new kitchen appliances plus air conditioning and ceiling fans. A large tiled patio and in ground salt water pool area makes entertaining a breeze. Surrounding the home is a good sized fenced area which is big enough for a truck to enter and exit out the other side. The property is almost 1.5 acres of land which is well landscaped and has plenty of room remaining for kids and pets to play. Adjacent to the fenced area you will find a fenced paddock which is ideal if you have or are thinking of buying a pony. Car accommodation is no problem with a two car garage on the home plus a 6m x 9m shed. Only a short drive and you will be on the Bruce Highway or driving into the Glass House Mountains township that has a supermarket, doctors surgery and post office. This property would suit anyone from a truckie to a family in need of a bigger home. If you would like to inspect this property or would like more information more please phone Kelvin Brady from Laurie Evans Real Estate Glass House Mountains on 0429 003 338.

Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 The bromeliads in the garden at this time of the year have such a wide range of flower types – one of which is the Vriesea genus. This group was recognised by botanists in the early 1840’s and named in honour of a Dutch botanist, H. de Vries. Vrieseas are mainly epiphytes (i.e. not grown in the soil) and occur in moist, shaded conditions in nature. They usually occur in environments similar to those prevailing in the moist sub-tropics. Vrieseas have a water storage ‘tank’ formed by their central leaves. These store water that helps the plant to meet their moisture requirements during dry periods. Many Vrieseas are grown for their inflorescences (flower spikes) rather than their foliage. These are categorised as green-leaved Vrieseas. Those, grown primarily for their attractively marked leaves, are often described as foliage Vrieseas. As Vrieseas are mainly epiphytes, good drainage is essential. They require an open mixture which drains freely and dries out quickly. Avoid any materials that decompose quickly; this can affect good drainage and thereby damage delicate root growth. Generally, Vriesea are medium-sized plants. However, they can vary in size from about 15cm to around 1.5 metres in diameter. They have smooth-edged, green leaves which are usually

soft and flexible, although a few species have foliage that is relatively firm and less pliable. The leaves can come in shades of green from very light to extremely dark, almost black. They can be spotted, blotched or barred. The flower spike of the inflorescence has green, yellow, or white flowers. It is mostly erect, but some species have pendant (hanging) or semipendant types. The brilliantly coloured bracts

green, purple, red, or yellow and retain their colour for many months. One of the most difficult things for growers when starting out is that you collect plants from all sorts of places – with or without a name. As you become addicted to collecting bromeliads, and you need to know the name of the species, this is when the detective work can really start. This can be a challenge as I have found with the plant above. The closest plant I can find to it is Vriesea ‘Firecracker’. The spike has been out for about four weeks and the flowers are starting to open. The display will be in full bloom in about another two weeks and will be on display until well after Christmas.

Planting banana suckers from a friend or neighbour? Don’t, it’s illegal! The Australian Banana Growers’ Council (ABGC) is reminding backyard banana growers to ensure they have a permit to plant. Banana Bunchy Top Disease National Program Co-ordinator David Peasley said that permits help prevent the spread of one of the worst diseases affecting the banana industry – Banana Bunchy Top. “While you may think you are helping out a friend or neighbour, giving them a sucker or planting material from your banana plant could help spread the disease,” Mr Peasley said. “The fight against Banana Bunchy Top disease is now underway in south east Queensland and the far north coast of New South Wales, the only areas where it is known to exist in Australia. The primary objective is to prevent the spread of this disease to the major production area in far north Queensland where the disease does not exist,” he said. As symptoms of Bunchy Top are difficult for the untrained eye to detect, it is vital that the planting of bananas is controlled. Banana permits are free of charge and easy to obtain through the Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation. “Banana suckers must be obtained from approved suppliers which have been inspected to ensure that they are disease free or from tissue culture nurseries,” Mr Peasley said. The National Banana Bunchy Top Project is also closely monitoring commercial plantations and destroying infected banana plants in these regions, but needs the help of the community in winning the war against Banana Bunchy Top Disease. “We know it is in backyard gardens and if people unknowingly give away plants with the disease we will never stop its spread,” he said. “Our aim is to eradicate Bunchy Top from Australia and this can only be achieved with the community’s help.” Banana Bunchy Top is spread by banana aphids and infected planting material. It causes plants to become stunted and bunches deformed. For more information about Banana Bunchy Top and inspection, call the Banana Bunchy Top Hotline on 1800 068 371.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Powderpuff Lilly Pilly

Syzygium wilsonii ssp wilsonii The Powderpuff Lilly Pilly is one of the most beautiful shrubs to come out of the rainforests of Far North Queensland. It has lovely lush green weeping foliage and its new growth is deep red. Its gorgeous flowers are large red powder puffs that hang from the shrub over Spring and Summer. These are quickly replaced with edible white fruit which the birds love. It is a fast growing shrub that grows to approximately 2 to 3m high and 2m wide. It can be grown in full sun but looks best in a semi shaded position. It is a wonderful shrub that can be kept in a pot, in a small suburban garden or as a jewel amongst a large rainforest planting. Drop in and check out the floral display in the nursery now.

News in brief Council keen to support community events

When it comes to community events on the Sunshine Coast, it’s not a case of ‘one size fits all’, and the Sunshine Coast Council is keen to support the diversity that exists in the region’s ‘community of communities’ through its comprehensive Events Policy. Community Policy and Programs portfolio, Councillor Jenny McKay said the Events Policy had been shaped by an extensive community engagement process and would be applied by council when supporting, partnering and facilitating or delivering events to ensure a transparent, accessible and consistent process across council. “Sunshine Coast Regional Council has adopted three key pieces of work that outline its role in supporting, partnering, facilitating and delivering events across the region, in keeping with our vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region,” she said. She said the Events Policy will be supported by the Community Events and Celebrations Strategy and the Festive Season Strategy. The delivery of the Community Events and Celebrations Strategy will be prioritised, costed and referred to Council budget estimates on an annual basis. Cr McKay said Council’s Events Policy would also provide a range of other support mechanisms to community events, apart from financial funding. In 2009 Council supported more than 300 community events and whilst we produced only a small number of these, council’s main role is to provide support and assistance to communities in organising their own events and utilising local resources and talent. News in brief Be a fan of the fan this summer As summer approaches EnergyAustralia is urging residents to think about fans first to keep cool, keep costs down and minimise carbon emissions. EnergyAustralia’s Energy Efficiency Expert Paul Myors said fans are effective and should always be your first choice when trying to cool your home. “Fans are generally cheap to buy, cheap to run and there are designs to suit any home and budget,” Mr Myors said. “Ceiling fans cost up to two cents per hour to run, or about $6.00 over the summer months. Compare that to an air conditioner which can cost between 30 to 40 cents an hour or more than $150.00 to run in summer.” While fans might seem a simple way to cool, there are steps you can take to make sure you are getting the most efficient results. Traditional ceiling and pedestal fans are effective ways of keeping cool and there are new technology options available. There are whole house fans that can be installed in the roof, which are an efficient option for cooling large areas on milder days. While fans don’t lower the temperature of the room, moving air makes the human body feel cooler as moisture is evaporated from the skin. “If your home is well insulated, has good window shades, and is designed to capture cool summer breezes, then fans can keep you comfortable right through summer,” Mr Myors said.

“This is the time of year to make sure your ceiling fans are on the summer setting (forward rotation). This will circulate the cool air around the room in the most efficient way. “The benefit of a pedestal fan is you can move it to which ever room you are using. They’re also the cheapest to buy, with prices starting at around $20.00. “Having a fan in the bedroom is a great idea because running it on low at night will mean you can remain comfortable while sleeping, with minimal impact on your power bill.” If more than one ceiling fan is needed in a large living area, the spacing between them should be approximately three times the fan width for the best fit. EnergyAustralia’s tips to become a fan of fans • Fans cost about $6.00 over summer to run, compared to conditioners which can cost more than $150.00. • Make sure ceiling fans are set to the summer or cooling setting (forward rotation). • Look for timber blades for bedrooms, as they are generally quieter than metal ones, making sleeping a breeze. • When choosing a fan, look for wide blades with steep angles to achieve a more functional air flow. • Consider the size of the room, larger rooms need fans with larger blades to create a cooling breeze.

Glass House lifestyle protected by the LNP The lifestyle we love in the Glass House electorate will be protected under an LNP Government, with holistic development, infrastructure, environment and economic plans to be created for the Sunshine Coast. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, and his LNP colleagues have launched ‘A Liveable Sunshine Coast’, the LNP’s Policy for protecting the region’s unique characteristics. “This policy is the starting point for planning the Sunshine Coast’s future,” Mr Powell said. “The Coast has always been a great place to live and the LNP wants to ensure that it stays that way. “We need proper infrastructure that links Coast communities, we need to protect our catchments and the Pumicestone Passage and we need to ensure there are more jobs and economic opportunities created locally.”

Mr Powell said under an LNP Government Ministerial call-ins will only be used in exceptional circumstances. “This long-term Labor Government’s decision to go against the wishes of many Coast residents and the Council with the Caloundra South development shows how out of touch this government is,” Mr Powell continued. “We will restore transparency and integrity to the planning process and ensure Sunshine Coast residents have a real say in shaping this region. “Residents of the Glass House electorate know the Coast is a special place to live, work and play. “The LNP is committed to this region and ensuring growth does not change the very things that brought us all here in the first place,” Mr Powell said. The LNP Policy can be viewed at http://www. jplangbroek.com/a-liveable-sunshine-coast

Scrumptious spanners seek safety for spawning Queensland spanner crab will be off the fishing menu from midnight November 20 until midnight December 20. Senior fisheries management officer Phil Gaffney said the annual closed season was aimed at protecting spanner crabs during their peak spawning period. “The closed season allows crabs to spawn and secures healthy crab stocks for future generations to enjoy,” Mr Gaffney said. “It is especially important during this time to ensure that any spanner crabs caught unintentionally should be carefully removed from the dilly and quickly returned to the water.

“Fishers should also keep in mind that it is illegal to take egg-bearing (berried) female spanner crabs or any spanner crab with a carapace length that is less than 10 centimetres at any time.” Spanner crab lovers should not be dismayed however, as the season will reopen on December 21 – just in time to feature on the Christmas table. What a surprise

A couple go out for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and order the ‘Chicken Surprise’. The waiter brings the meal, served in a lidded cast iron pot. Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid of the pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady little eyes looking around before the lid slams back down. “Good grief, did you see that?” she asks her husband.

Sudden and unexpected changes around your home and work can take you by surprise. Friends can also be somewhat confusing. Your life can be going through many changes. A new lifestyle is ahead. A sudden windfall is possible. Travel is also a possibility at this period.

This can be an excellent time for finances and career. Money can come out of the blue unexpectedly. A friend from the past may contact you which would be a surprise. Good news coming about a new work situation. For some a new relationship can begin. A new pet can come into the family.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BOOK THIS SPACE TO PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS?

So sorry,” says the waiter, “I bring you Peeking Duck.” Submitted by Des Holmsquest, Landsborough
