Hi everyone It was a big week last week for local Year 12 students and their parents. On Wednesday night the Beerwah High Students had their graduation dinner at the Caloundra Events Centre and Glasshouse Country Christian College students had their formal at House of Laurels in Maleny on Thursday night. The official ceremonies that then marked the end of the school life were then held on Friday morning each culminating in a ‘Clap Out’ ceremony by the rest of the school. I can only imagine what an emotional time it must have been for the parents – and that would have been just coping with the stress of getting through the dressing up, haircuts, make up, cars, and shoes etc. I have seen some stories in the media that the formals are the next biggest event to their weddings – so no doubt there was also a fair bit of stress on the parent’s wallets as well.

And judging by some of the photos we have seen, the angst and preparation has really paid off with some very glamorous and stylish outfits - these will be featured in the next edition. In this edition we have included a number of shots from the clap out ceremonies, you can check these out on page 12. Next week we will be featuring some of the fashions from the big nights. If you have any photos that you would like to appear in the feature please send them to editorial@ gcnews.com.au (just make sure that everyone in the pics are happy to have them published. Regards,

The campaign to see the Glass House Mountains registered on the National Landscapes list continues, following the recent return of a group of delegates who have been lobbying for the iconic listing down in the state’s capital. The group, led by Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell, included the Chair of Regional Development Australia (RDA) Sunshine Coast Cr Debbie Blumel, divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz, Australia Zoo’s Natalie Hodgskin, and John Sereni, of Sunshine Coast Destination. The group met with the Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading, the Hon Peter Lawlor, to help advocate for the inclusion of the iconic Glass House Mountains on the National Landscapes list. The National Landscapes program aims to celebrate and promote unique and iconic Australian landscapes to international travellers; and the campaign to have the Glass House Mountains included in the list seems to have gained significant support following the meeting. Only three of the available 15 spaces in the National Landscape program remain open. . Cr Blumel, as chair of Regional Development Australia Sunshine Coast said she was pleased the delegation received a good hearing from the Minister. “He has committed to speaking with Tourism Queensland in an effort to see this project come together and has encouraged us to continue to pursue the program further.

Cr Blumel, Australia Zoo's Natalie Hodgskin, Andrew Powell, Cr Anna Grosskreutz and John Sereni of Sunshine Coast Destination Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell said he was passionate about the project. “Inclusion in the National Landscapes list would be of great benefit to the region and will certainly encourage tourism development and ensure further funding to protect our local environment.” Long serving Sunshine Coast Councillor Anna Grosskreutz who has represented the GlassHouse Country Region for more than a decade said, “the recognition of the scenic values of our National Heritage listed mountains and beautiful Pumicestone Marine Park will build on the millions of dollars already invested by State and Federal Governments and Council. “We all have a keen interest in protecting the regions values and strengthening its future. The National Landscape title will move us a step closer.”

Bottoms up, we’re tops! Hinterland licensed pubs and clubs have come out on top following the results of a program that aims to encourage safer venues and drinking practices across the coast. The Beerwah RSL was identified as the safest venue on the coast as part of the Safer Venues program, an initiative of Queensland Health and DrugArm Australasia. It received a gold award, while the Beerwah Hotel, Landsborough Hotel and Ettamogah Pub all took out a silver award. The venues are members of CALM Hinterland Accord, which works together with state and local governments and other agencies to discuss local and regional liquor-related issues. Council’s community programs manager Mike Lollback said all members of Calm accords, of which there are seven across the Sunshine Coast, were delivering outcomes in the way they manage and train staff and deal with patrons in promoting safer drinking practices, and actions that improve the community as a whole. “The Safer Venues Program is an initiative undertaken by members of the various Calm accords across the coast to reduce the negative outcomes of excessive alcohol consumption like violence and street crime by working proactively with the liquor industry,” Mr Lollback said. “The hinterland members have achieved great results, which is an example of their collaborative approach in setting community standards and working with other venues.

Beerwah RSL Mr Lollback said the Hinterland accord was certainly one which helped set standards amongst other accord members. “Just recently, for example, Beerwah Hotel, along with representatives from Queensland Transport, Queensland Police and Council, gave a presentation to senior students at Beerwah State High about drinking and the effects of alcohol, such as strategies for looking after your mates, and the consequences of your actions,” Mr Lollback said. Clare Gardener from DrugArm Australasia said the venues assessed under the Safer Venues program went through a vigorous process which included extensive questions about the venue’s policies and procedures on a wide range of issues with the manager and a staff member, as well as day and evening walk throughs. “The process is all about highlighting safe venues, and encouraging venues to look at ways to improve practices to ensure this outcome,” Clare said. “Those hinterland venues that are part of the accord are to be congratulated for proactively trying to improve safety of venues across the region for staff and patrons,” she said.

Community Recycling Inc leaps to success Our local environmental leaders, Community Recycling Inc, have taken out an award at the 15th annual Sunshine Coast Environment Awards, the Froggies, announced earlier this month. The team took out the Waste Management Award, in recognition of an initiative or product that actively supports waste minimisation principles. This year was the first time Community Recycling Inc have entered the awards, which are held annually to promote environmental excellence and sustainability by recognising the achievements of local community groups, businesses, government and Individuals on the Sunshine Coast.

Manager Trish Cashin, who was on holidays at the time of the announcement, said she was both shocked and thrilled to hear they had won an award. “We’ve never even before this year entered these awards, I never thought we would stand a chance, so it’s a wonderful surprise, and really puts a stamp on our actions, that we are working towards the right outcomes,” Trish said. Trish said the award was one to be shared amongst all the communities that Community Recycling Inc services, through its Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre operation. “Without the support and diligence of our local community, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve this great result,” she said.

Growing a cure for cancer

If gardens are a reflection of the gardener who created them, then you just know Tic Davis from Glass House Mountains is a lovely and delightful lady. The fact that all proceeds from her Open Garden this weekend (Saturday, November 27) is going to the Cancer Council Queensland reveals her inner beauty as well. “I’ve seen lots of people with cancer. My mum died of lung cancer nine years ago, and my uncle died of prostate cancer. I felt I wanted to do something - give people a chance to live,” Tic said. Tic grew up in Thailand. Her family was poor and had no land, so it was always a dream of hers to have her own garden one day. She began creating her garden at Glass House Mountains in

1989. Every day she spends at least two to three hours, and sometimes all day, gardening. Even when she sleeps she’s planning what do in the garden. “My garden is what I love doing. They’re growing, and they look pretty, I enjoy looking at it every day,” she said. Her garden is filled with bromeliads, agapanthus, cactus, daylilies, orchids and more, but her favourite plant is a ‘euphorbia’. They flower most times of the year and are very hardy, she says. She is also fond of her cactus garden. “You don’t need to look after them at all. When they flower they are very pretty,” she said. Weeding is the hardest part of looking after such a large garden but to Tic, it’s worth it.

“The easiest job is looking at it and enjoying what I’ve done,” she said. Entry to Saturday’s open garden is free for children, and $2.00 for adults. Tic and her friends are cooking delicious treats for morning and afternoon tea such as scones, carrot cake slice, ginger cake and more, all for only $2.00 a plate. There’ll be a sausage sizzle for lunch, a raffle with great prizes, as well as plants, macadamia nuts, Christmas gifts and more for sale. Drinks such as tea, coffee and cordial are free. So if you want to help raise funds for a great cause be sure to drop into 55 Bassetts Road, Glass House Mountains this Saturday, November 27 from 9.30am - 4.00pm.

Beerwah State School student leaders camp out

Steve Irwin Day camp out By Madison Butler

All the student leaders from Beerwah State School got together for the Steve Irwin camp out at the school grounds on Thursday, November 11. The camp out was to support Steve Irwin’s dream of saving all wildlife and to help raise awareness of the endangered species around the world. The student leaders got a little visit from Murray from Australia Zoo. Murray told the students about the animals at the hospital and how they got there. The leaders did some singing along to Anna Renwick’s guitar playing which was great. They all roasted potatoes and made damper with honey and butter. The leaders all went out to see some wildlife and they sadly didn’t find anything except for toads. The next morning they all had to get up and prepare for Khaki day. On Khaki day our students and staff make a gold coin donation to help raise

The camp out was a great experience for all the student leaders which helped them to bond with each other. “It was a great night. We ate burgers and sausages around the fire along with potatoes. We had damper with honey that tasted nice. We got to play with friends, talk and do a sing along. It was great,” commented Josh Lammeratz, school vice captain. It was a very enjoyable and musical night. Crikey!

Meridan Plains kids care for their catchment Eighteen Year 6 children from Pacific Lutheran College got their hands dirty last week to take part in an Energex Junior Landcare Activity day. The day was hosted by Mooloolah Waterwatch with funding from Energex, at its nursery site on Steve Irwin Way, Glenview, where children planted nearly 250 native species and tested water quality as they investigated and engaged with their natural environment. The children also took part in an Energex Energy Awareness Game, to learn about energy efficiency with Energex’s Principal Environmental Adviser, Dr Jan Green. The day was one of a series of 10, to be held throughout South East Queensland this year, as part of a partnership between Landcare Queensland and Energex, worth over $260,000. “2010 is Education Queensland’s Year of Environmental Sustainability, as well as being the International Year of Biodiversity so the Energex Junior Landcare days are a great way for a new generation of Landcarers to do their bit for their local environment,” said Justin Ward, project coordinator for Landcare Queensland. “By getting children outside to plant trees and investigate their environment, we hope to help nurture a new generation of Landcarers.”

Young composers in the making This year two Year 12 Beerwah State High School students, Emily Madden and Andrew Perryman, competed in the ASME Young Composers Competition. Each year the Queensland Chapter of the Australian Society for Music Education conducts a competition in honour of student composition. The Young Composers Competition is organised by ASME to encourage involvement in composition and to foster excellence in new music. The competition provides an opportunity for young composers to create, perform and listen to their music and to receive advice that will assist in their future development. Students from primary school through to tertiary institutions can enter the competition. Each composition is critiqued by an experienced professional composer and all entrants receive written feedback from the judge. The adjudicator was Dr Stephen Cronin, Head of Composition at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Congratulations to Emily who received first prize for her composition ‘Land, Sea, City’ ($150.00) and Andrew who received third prize for his composition ‘Neyel’ ($30.00). Emily and Andrew were recently presented with their certificates, medallions and prizes at the awards ceremony held at 4MBS Studios in Brisbane.

Reminiscent of typical Melbourne weather – rainy, hot and dusty. What were a few of the highlights of your holiday? Forbidden city, terracotta warriors, Yangtze River, 84 story building they had breakfast in. The Yangtze River is 6,300 km in length, and it’s estimated that more than 10 per cent of the world’s population live along its banks. Terracotta warriors – one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Comprises over 7,000 soldiers, horses and chariots and was built in life-size form by thousands of workers and designed by the self proclaimed Emperor Qin Shi Huang to defend him in his afterlife.

What was the most unusual thing you experienced on your trip? Throughout China, in its cities and back streets, people are so kind and helpful - media reports don’t often show that.

Postcard GCNews received from Brian during his trip. His message on the postcard read:

Hello all the workers. Travelling well. The (GC) News is well read, will leave it on the wall for all the world to read. Best Wishes, Brian.

This week's Travelling Tales is the final in this year's series. Thank you to all our happy travellers who have shared their travelling tales this year. Keep an eye out in coming weeks for details of the winner of the two night cruise aboard the Dawn Princess, valued at approx $1,900.00, which has been kindly donated by Mell Shepherd of Beerwah Travel.

At Last! We’ve found it! The largest onsite range of Landscaping Supplies on the coast. • YES! We really do have the LARGEST onsite range of products so you won’t spend your weekends going from place to place to get everything you need. • Worried about your project budget? You don’t have to stress about it being blown, because we have multiple grades of all our products to give you quality and choice within your budget. • Bring your project specs with you and we will work out what you need because our industry and product knowledge is so good. You don’t have to worry about it! • You won’t have to have to concern yourself with correct load sizes; all our buckets are audited by the weights and measures authority. • Do you need bark chips or mulch but you’re not sure what to buy? No worries, we’ll give you advice based on your needs and then we’ll fit it into your budget. • You won’t have to pick bits and pieces that you didn’t want out of what you buy, all our loaders and trucks are washed between loads to stop those nasty surprises. • Our clients and their projects are critically important to us; we don’t just say ‘If you’re not happy, we’re not happy’ we mean it. To us excellent customer service isn’t just words, it’s a business philosophy which means that your shopping experience is guaranteed to satisfy every time.

We can also DELIVER easily any load size, our professional drivers will bring it directly to your door (so to speak) or if you prefer you can use one of our courtesy trailers. Lenny and Tracey Smith of Gowinta Farms, with Beau Bridges, centre

Gowinta Farm’s Lenny and Tracey Smith certainly turned heads at the recent Steve Irwin Gala Dinner at the Brisbane Convention Centre, and had their own brush with fame when they managed to get a photo with Hollywood star Beau Bridges. The photo will no doubt be treasured by Tracey – as it’s one of the very few, and certainly the only one we here at GCNews have ever seen, of Lenny in a suit.

Doing business

Not your traditional repair shop!

Get into the season at Beerwah Marketplace

Beerwah Marketplace retailers would like to offer their thanks to their loyal customers for their continued custom throughout the years by offering special gifts for Christmas. There will be Nintendo Wii’s, Christmas hampers and shopping vouchers to be won over a four week period. Five prizes will be drawn each Saturday at 1.00pm commencing this week, Saturday, November 27. For more details on how to win, ask your local Beerwah Marketplace retailer. Doing business is very difficult at the best of times, and in the tough times, it is even harder. The retailers at Beerwah Marketplace very much appreciate the loyalty of their customers. They know that their customers understand that unless the local retailers are supported, they cannot survive, and therefore would not be able to offer their friendly service on an ongoing basis. Beerwah Marketplace retailers wish all of their customers a very Merry Christmas and fabulous New Year.

Local company takes out business award

Local company Oz Future Fuels has taken out the Large Environmental Business Award 2010 at the recent Sunshine Coast Excellence in Business awards held recently. Oz Future Fuels was one of 400 businesses nominated at this year’s awards. Directors Allan and Gerardine Lear said they considered this latest achievement was only made possible by having such talented valuable staff.

The Oz Future Fuels team This nationally recognised leading hydrocarbon waste recovery, refining and recycling company targets mining industries, councils and waste producers with effective full cycle waste management solutions, and is currently working with Xstrata and Wesfarmers assisting waste recovery, recycle and reuse programs.

Beerwah Auto Centre is not your usual mechanical repair shop. While it’s fairly common to come across family run businesses these days, what isn’t so common is to see a father-daughter combination on the workshop floor. But Wayne and Belle that is just what you will find, plus more, at Beerwah Auto Centre Beerwah Auto Centre. Wayne Povey and his daughter Belle have proven themselves a formidable team when it comes to everything automotive. A Subaru specialist, they not only offer mechanical repairs, log book servicing, and parts and repairs on all makes and models, they’re also where you’ll find the only female motor dismantler and mechanic in the area. Wayne has 30 years experience in the industry, and says bringing his daughter, a spare parts guru, on board is the best thing he’s done. “Feedback from our customers has been great,” said Wayne. “Belle has been a wonderful addition to the business, and her knowledge and experience is second to none.” Belle said customers find it helpful to see the part and why it needs replacing. “With every car we work on, I like to explain to customers in detail how each component works, and having a wrecking yard as well gives me the option to pull out parts for comparison to help eliminate confusion.” Many customers also appreciate the balance of gender in what is traditionally a male dominated environment, said Belle. “No question is ever too silly to ask at our family business, and we also do our best to help our customers with one on one service, male or female,” she said. And to top off their great service, they will even wash your car before you pick it up. Who could ask for more? Beerwah Auto Centre is located at 18 Free Street, Beerwah, and is open five days a week, from 8.00am 5.00pm, and from 8.00am -12.00noon on Saturday. Give them a call on 5439 0465 or 5439 0455.

Fisher Australia Day awards

SANITY has prevailed.

Those who know a local resident who works hard in a voluntary role for the community are encouraged to lodge a nomination for the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards, which will be announced and presented at a special function on Australia Day. Australia Day in 2011 will mark the 11th holding of the awards. For a nomination form, collect one from my office at Buddina or phone 5444 4888 and speak to Richard. Remember, the deadline is fast approaching and Australia Day will be here before we know it.

Funds for veterans

Veterans groups who are interested in applying for funding under the ‘Saluting their Service’ grants programme are encouraged to visit: www. dva.gov.au/grants. The grants programme helps commemorate Australia’s wartime history and honours those soldiers who have served and continue to serve in wars, conflicts and peacetime operations. The grants have in the past been awarded for research projects, building and restoring war memorials, funding of anniversary events.

Cyber security

A new office for the computer emergency response team has been opened in Queensland. The office started operations in January and is the main source of cyber security information for the Australian community. The CERT Australia office aims to ensure that everyday computer systems that provide services to Australia remain safe and secure. The office works in conjunction with similar offices around the world and has established specific programmes for the protection of banking and finance, control systems and telecommunications sectors. Further details are available at: www.attorneygeneral.gov.au/www/ministers/mcclelland.nsf/Page/Newsroom

Youth mentoring programme

A Youth Mentoring Grants Programme is being established as part of efforts to counter any possibility of violent extremism in the community. The Government’s Counter-Terrorism White Paper, Securing Australia, Protecting Our Community, acknowledged the risk of home grown terrorism and highlighted the importance of building a strong and resilient community to resist violent extremism and terrorism. More information about the Building Community Resilience – Youth Mentoring Grants Program is available at www.ag.gov.au. Applications close Friday, December 3.

The Beerwah Community Sports Day will go ahead in 2011. The township and its residents will benefit from the fun day but more importantly it will help fill the coffers for worthwhile charities. It’s hard to believe the event was postponed last year and put in jeopardy for the future because the road to the site needed an upgrade. Penny-pinching and squabbling were the order of the day and ultimately the Sunshine Coast Regional Council refused to foot the bill for the road repair and an estimated $50,000 in funding towards charity was lost. However, common sense has prevailed and the good work of the Beerwah community has also been further recognised in the process. I met with the district manager of the Main Roads Department last month and he advised me that construction of the road would now start in December. He was unaware that the event raised much-needed funds for charity and after stressing that the event was normally held in August each year he assured me the road would be completed by Easter 2011. It’s a great outcome but it’s also a shame that the event had to be postponed this year. These decisions are made based on fact and finance but somehow along the way waves of disappointment which swell through the community are ignored and more’s the pity. However, the good citizens and the organising committee at Beerwah have stuck to their guns and fought this one out to the end. Congratulations to them for that. They can be rest assured that I’ll be monitoring the progress of the new road and ensuring it is completed on time. See you at the sports day in August.

Light Towers – Landsborough Sports Ground

Council calls for members for rating reference group

Some concerns have been raised by the users of the Landsborough Sports Ground, regarding the safety of the electrical wiring on the lighting towers. Council Facility officers have advised that they identified the wiring to be a concern and engaged Electrical Contractors to check the integrity of the external electrical on the two lighting towers. It was deemed there was no danger to the public although it was recommended that the wiring be relocated to the inside of the towers. Council has already planned work on some of the lighting towers with the installation of the light shades. Council have decided to take the opportunity to engage an Electrical Consultant to source recommendations on the type of lights used to best facilitate the AFL and Cricket with their activities at the ground whilst taking into account the lights that will be most sustainable. The removal of the external wiring to the inside of the towers will be carried out in conjunction with the Lighting upgrade to take full advantage of the cherry pickers and cranes that will need to be used for both projects.

Speed Review and Safety Audit for Commissioners Flat Road

After numerous requests from concerned residents, Council will be conducting a Road Safety Review and Speed Limit Review of Commissioners Flat Road, Peachester. The Speed Limit Review findings will be presented to the January meeting of the Speed Management Committee, and the Road Safety Review should be completed in prior to Christmas. Once I have the results from these reviews on my desk I will ensure the information is included in my column, including any changes to the road speed.

Shade Sail Beerwah Skate Bowl - update

Last week an order was placed with the supplier for the replacement of the storm damaged shade cover over the Beerwah skate bowl. It has been requested that this is a priority as it requires replacing ASAP.

Council is inviting members of the community from across the Sunshine Coast region to form a reference group to study council’s general rates. During the 2010/2011 budget process Council resolved to consult our community regarding its differential general rate structure. The Rating Reference Group (RRG) will examine various options available within the current legislation regarding general rates and will act as an independent advisory group to provide input into a report to council outlining options and alternatives. Further details on how to get involved, as well as Rating Reference Group application forms, are available from http://www.sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au/sitePage.cfm?code=rating-ref-group or through local council offices. Applications close on Friday, November 26.

After being a Baker and owning his own Bakery for 47 years, Ivan Woodhouse decided it was time for a change. He thought he would like to mow people’s lawns but was unsure how to start on his own. “Then I saw an ad in the paper for James’ Home Services Lawn Mowing Franchise. After reading about James’ Home Services I decided James’ was the professional, reputable company I was looking for. After starting my business with James’ I haven’t looked back. I enjoy working for a company who constantly supports its Franchisees whether it is with the National Support Centre, ongoing Marketing or a Business Coach. I’m 68 ½ years young and love that it is my business, I can set my own hours and still have time for Golf!”

Thanks for what?

Re: the letter in GCNews, November 10, ‘Thanks to local councillor regarding the condition of Roys, Mawsons, Bury and Cabrera Roads’. These roads have been in Cr Anna Grosskruetz’s division for many years, and over these years have been neglected, even though the previous Caloundra City Council approved a commercial business and caravan park on Bury Road. These successful businesses have contributed to the heavy flow of traffic and the condition of Bury and surrounding roads. To thank the local councillor for attending a public meeting and carrying out her duties as the elected representative of her division is, to say the least, ‘a bit of a joke’. Name Supplied, Beerwah

How long does it take to change a road sign? How do the people working for Qld Main Roads (Sunshine Coast branch) keep their jobs? If they were working for me, they would be looking for other employment. Tristran Robinson took over his new position with Sunshine Coast Main Roads and was given a job that he was made aware of at the time he commenced his new posting. 80km/h signage on the Steve Irwin Way, from opposite the Scouts Hall, all that was required was the removal of the 100km/h signs and replace them with 80Km/h signs, then do the same south of the Village Caravan Park. It would have been industrious of them, had they also painted the 80 on the roadway, replacing the 100 limit, but no, that was apparently much too hard or was it a cost cutting exercise? On top

of that, they have removed the 100Km/h signs, however, not replaced them with 80km/h so that anyone coming out of the Glasshouse Village onto Steve Irwin Way and intending to travel south, has no idea what the speed limit is. I might mention that the actual Speed Management Meeting dealing with this matter was held at the Nambour RSL way back on July 20, I was informed as was our local MP that it would take six to 10 working weeks, yes that’s correct, six to 10 working weeks to carry out the work required in taking down the two 100 km/h signs outside the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club and erecting two 80km/h signs north bound just south of the Village Caravan Park. Need I bother to say anything further, except to ask “How do they get these jobs?” Brian Stallworthy, Glass House Mountains

What about our four legged friends?

We are long-time residents of our town and writing to express our concerns about the attitude of the state and local council health departments with regards to not allowing dogs in Queensland cafes, restaurants or pubs. We can quite understand them not being allowed inside these premises but where there are outside dining areas which are accessed from outside, we believe dogs should be allowed at the discretion of the business operator, not archaic regulations. We are a retired couple and our dogs are a very important part of our family and also assist us in our fitness regime. There is a very nice café in our village where we would like to go with our dogs to have a meal or just coffee. The café proprietors tell us they would be more than willing to accommodate us and our dogs but can’t as it would contravene the health conditions and could result in them incurring a massive fine. Why should this be? We believe that all responsible dog owners are being discriminated by short sighted and ill informed bureaucratic decisions and that food outlet operators are missing out on an available market which in these difficult times is costing them money. We have recently returned from a trip to Adelaide with our dogs and were delighted with the relaxed approach by food outlet operators. We told other diners who also had their dogs with them about the ridiculous situation in Queensland and the general comment was surprise that Queensland was so backward, and that a trip to this state would not be on their agenda, so we are probably also missing out on tourist dollars. Given the amount of retired people travelling around Australia with their dogs, it is important

that something is done to make them more welcome. In the last couple of years we have travelled to Canada, America and the UK all of which are much more liberal in the way they allow dogs in eating areas and even allowing them to stay in hotels and other accommodation, and in some cases, on public transport. We would like to see some common sense from both state and local governments to allow individual business operators to make their own decisions, and call on your support to achieve this. We urge all like minded dog owners to contact their local MP and councillor to voice their concern. Tony and Dot Whiteman Mooloolah Valley

It makes good sense

Andrew Powell is to be congratulated for his ongoing effort to have the North Coast Rail Project completed and the rail journey time between the North Coast and Brisbane reduced to a reasonable standard. There is however another aspect to this. Leave Beerwah at say 6.30am on a week day to drive to Brisbane as many people do and chances are you’ll wind up getting caught in grid locked traffic and seriously delayed on the Bruce Highway. Not good for motorists blood pressure as the chances of keeping appointments or getting to work on time disappear. You’d also have to shudder at the extra pollution caused when hundreds of vehicles get caught in gridlocks. It’s frustrating to see that a lot of this early morning traffic is made up by cars carrying one person. We need to get behind Andrew in his bid to get the State Government to prioritise completion of the North Coast Rail project. Not only does realigned double track allow for reduced travel time, it should also allow Queensland Rail to run more frequent services from the North Coast during the morning rush hour and alleviate the overcrowding that occurs on the morning trains. Faster and more frequent trains in the rush hour could hopefully persuade a lot of people to leave the car in the station car park. Bob Banner Peachester

Ladies Night a sparkling success

On Friday, October 22, around 100 ladies came along to the C&K Mooloolah Kindergarten's ‘Ladies' Night In’ Fundraiser. All the children's play things were packed away for the evening and fairy lights and candles transformed the Kindergarten and created a beautiful ambience for ladies to socialise together. Ladies sipped on champagne and nibbled on gourmet delights while enjoying a fashion parade and shopping at various stalls. Massage and beauty therapists also pampered ladies with massage and mini beauty treatments. Lots of ladies also took home some wonderful lucky door and raffle prizes. A big thank you also to all the generous local stall holders that helped make our night a success. A fantastic evening was enjoyed by all who attended. All funds raised on the evening, over $1,500, directly benefitted the Kindergarten, providing resources and experiences for the kindergarten children as well as contributing to the ongoing refurbishment of the Kindergarten. The Kindergarten's Parent Advisory Group, who organised the fundraiser, were thrilled with the response to the evening and they are planning to host another fundraising evening again next year. CHOICE study shows many lose out on gift card gifts Gift cards can be a convenient present, but according to a CHOICE study, if you don’t choose carefully you could be flushing your money away in a growing industry worth $1.5 billion a year.* CHOICE found more than one in two of their surveyed members had a gift card expire before using its full value. “Gift cards can be a handy way to give a present but always check the terms and conditions carefully and beware short expiry dates and how stores handle lost and stolen cards,” says CHOICE Spokesperson Ingrid Just. CHOICE looked at 15 gift cards from major retailers and found only one - from Bunnings didn’t have an expiry date. The rest were only valid between six months to two years. David Jones and JB Hi-Fi, however, say they will honour or exchange expired cards. “CHOICE thinks there’s no good reason why gift cards cannot have much longer lives or no expiry

at all. Consumers may have a responsibility to use them before they lose them but the industry counts on the fact many will not do so,” says Ms Just.

Gift d r a C

For this reason CHOICE recommends gift cards from Coles Group and Myer and Wish (Woolworths group) as these cards allow you to buy everyday items from a number of stores which minimises the risk of the cards expiring before use. The Bunnings gift card also comes without an expiry date and allows card holders to receive cash change up to $9.95. Another option is to convert an unwanted gift card to cash or exchange the gift card via the internet. A new website, www.cardlimbo.com.au, allows you to sell unwanted gift cards from about 100 retailers at between 60-90 per cent of the card’s purchase price. The site also sells gift cards at a discount.

Consider Australian-made this Christmas Queenslanders are being asked to give extra thought to buying Australian-made this Christmas, as the strong Australian dollar continues to damage the sector. “With the Aussie dollar now at parity with the US dollar, our exporters are hurting,” Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) state secretary Andrew Dettmer said. “Export sales have fallen considerably lately and a lot of the companies employing our members have taken a hit. “In addition, consumers are increasingly buying goods from overseas as it gets cheaper to do so and that leaves local manufacturers taking a hit to not only their export markets, but also their local ones. “This is a time of year when business naturally slows down anyway, so we’re concerned we may see inflated levels of lay-offs of contract workers from the sector over the festive season. “As we start thinking about Christmas shopping, we’d just ask people to have a look at the

locally-manufactured options available to them and to consider purchasing those instead of foreign alternatives. “There are plenty of fantastic, top-quality Australian-made products available on the market and the internet makes it much easier to find them. “Ultimately, spending your dollars locally will benefit the economy and ensure that more manufacturing companies can keep employing Queenslanders – and that benefits everyone.” Mr Dettmer said that the AMWU’s call came as part of a broader initiative to encourage the public, government and industry to buy Australian-made. A comprehensive list of Australian-made products can be found at: www.buyaustralianmade.com.au

While 98 per cent of Australians support organ and tissue donation, many are yet to register their donation wishes on the Australian Organ Donor Register. Following the 10th anniversary of the Donor Register, Australians are being reminded of the importance of talking about their donation decision with the people close to them and registering that decision. New Organ and Tissue Authority research shows that of the majority of adult Australians (78 per cent) willing to be organ and tissue donors, less than half have registered their donation decision. Registration of your organ and tissue donation decision is something that family members need to know to ensure that your donation wishes are upheld, as they will be asked to give the final ok. Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King said around 1,700 people remain on official transplant waiting lists at any one time. In 2009, 247 donors donated to 799 recipients. In total, there were 850 transplanted organs. Australia’s current family consent rate is less than 60 per cent. In Australia, family consent is always sought before donation can proceed and the most important thing for family members to know in making a decision is the wishes of the deceased. The first step to discovering the facts about organ and tissue donation is to visit www.donatelife.gov.au Register or to update your details visit www.donorregister.gov.au, a Medicare office or call 1800 777 203.

The New Moon in Sagittarius on Monday, December 6 brings a fresh burst of enthusiasm for adventure and exploration, and the need to enjoy life. This is a good time to start on a spiritual quest, a program of study or overseas travel. The New Moon is at 3.35am local time. Mercury goes retrograde on Friday, December 10, so make sure that any important paperwork or purchases are completed well before. Mercury retrograde is a period when communications can get problematic, and a time to be wary of making major purchases or signing contracts – at least read the fine print carefully. Be extra careful when buying Christmas goods and in the post-Christmas sales. Mercury is retrograde for three weeks until Thursday, December 30. The Full Moon in Gemini on Tuesday, December 21 is also a total lunar eclipse, at 6.13pm Queensland time. As the moon rises on sunset, the eclipse will still be visible and the moon likely to appear a blood-red colour. Earth changes often occur on total lunar eclipses, so keep an eye on the news. There may be some significant and sudden changes concerning communication, resulting eventually in clearer understanding. The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year (and shortest night) in the southern hemisphere. This year it falls on the morning of Wednesday, December 22 as the Sun moves into Capricorn (9.40am local time). If your birthday is December 26 or 27, the coming year is likely to be a time of deep personal transformation. Have a happy festive season! copyright © 2010 Chirone Witsen. All rights reserved. After months of hard work and generous support, on Wednesday, November 17 Mooloolah Valley State School and the Mooloolah Valley P & C launched its Multi-Cultural Cook Book. Students, their families, staff, celebrities and more all contributed around 400 recipes from countries around the world including Holland, Italy, Germany, Indonesia, New Zealand and of course, Australia. The book has recipes for starters, mains, desserts and drinks, everything you’d need to plan a great dinner party. Celebrities who provided recipes include Poh from Masterchef, Darren Lockyear, Pat Rafter, Chris Vermeulen and Caroline Hutchinson from MIX 92.7. Yolanda Keuning from Mooloolah Valley State School P & C Association co-ordinated the creation of the Multi-Cultural Cook Book, a great idea originally suggested by Tutu Joseph. Books like this don’t just happen, and many people and businesses were thanked including all those who contributed recipes, students who did illustrations, Kym Aldred of New Wave Design who donated her services, major sponsors IGA Mooloolah and Bassett Barks, numerous other local businesses, Peter Slipper MP, Pam Day, and of course Yolanda herself, who also thanked her son eldest son Casey who put in lots of time and help. Yolanda had one word to describe how she felt now that the book was complete. “Relieved,” she said. But the day wasn’t just about the book, it was also an opportunity to say thank you to all the wonderful volunteers at the school. Students presented certificates to the volunteers who were treated to a delicious morning tea, while principal, Michele Brown, acknowledged the important contribution of volunteers saying the day was to celebrate and congratulate all of them. One volunteer, Amanda Moreau, has been volunteering her time at the school for the past 13 years, but this is her final year, as the youngest of her three children graduates this year. Over the years if there is anything that needed a volunteer Amanda has probably done it. “I love this community minded school,” said Amanda. “Love that parents are welcome into the school and can be part of everything that goes on.”

Things 2 do Our Christmas special Do you dance or just enjoy listening? Then either way The Caxton Street Jazz Band is for you, when they blow up a storm on Saturday, December 4 at the Kawana Community Hall Nanyima Street Buddina.

The Caxton Street Jazz Band

The band was formed in 1977 and has performed constantly in jazz conventions, pubs, clubs, weddings and private functions. The band’s music is firmly planted in the hot traditional jazz of the early 1900s, but many other music influences are represented in their performances. Their music is drawn from the early Ellington, Armstrong, Bechet, Morton and Bix through to the mainstream jazz of the 30’s 40’s and 50’s. The music is never boring as the band stays true to their roots and continue to entertain showing the ability of these very fine musicians. The Caxton group has always prided itself on having the best musicians and this present lineup has no equal. The six piece Caxton Street Jazz Band band appeals not only to jazz aficionados but has a wide following from the general public who enjoy good music and dancing. It’s more than a jazz band, it’s formed by a group of talented musicians who enjoy playing and entertaining. To book phone Ted on 5491 6017 or Helen 5438 1976 (credit cards). Presented by the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club and 104.9 Sunshine FM.

Tyre blowouts have the potential to contribute to serious crashes if drivers are not prepared and don't know what to do when they happen. If a tyre does blow out, your vehicle will pull to the side of the damage for a front tyre, and sway to the sides for a rear tyre. If this happens, grip the steering wheel firmly; do not press on the footbrake and do not apply the handbrake; do not take your foot off the accelerator; provide some additional power through the accelerator to continue momentum, and compensate for the pull by counter steering. Once the vehicle is under control, ease off the accelerator and let the vehicle slow down gradually, and look for a safe place to pull over and stop. Remember to check the pressure and condition of your tyres regularly, to make sure they are legal and safe for driving. Most tyres now have a number of tread wear indicators in the grooves that show up as a line across the tyre when tread depth is low. If the tread or sidewall rubber is damaged, or if the tyres have cuts, bulges or exposed or damaged cords, the tyres should be replaced. Always ensure that spare tyres are also in good condition and inflated to the pressure specified for your vehicle. It is illegal to fit a tyre that is not in a roadworthy condition.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Martin Cran Mooloolah Valley Church

If I wrote a book (quite unlikely I assure you!) I’d need to be an expert on the subject; I’d need a few years and a lot of research and referencing to accomplish it. This is so unlike my favourite book which was written by 40 different authors spanning a time of 1,500 years who came from three different continents in a time well before technology connected them. These men were widely different in culture, lifestyle and importance; some were Kings, Shepherds, fishermen, politicians, doctors and ministers. They wrote from prison, travelling in the desert, on islands and in palaces. It was the first book to be printed on a printing machine in 1450 and is the world’s most popular book. The bible is made up of a collection of 66 books joined together to make up our bible. It begins with the creation of the world and is full of history, geography, archaeology, romance, spies and wars. It’s like the ultimate Jane Austen, adventure story, and national geographic all rolled into one, and yet…..

NOVEMBER 24 2010

This is a book written and guided by God and is a book all about life, understanding yourself, finding God and his power to transform you. Far from being a book of religious rules; the bible brings life as you read it. The bible deals with the big questions, life, death, hope, love, evil, purpose etc. The bible is a direct way to get to know who God really is, its God’s letter to us his people. Its purpose is clearly written in John Chapter 20 verse 31 ‘This is written that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through His name’. Find out for yourself why it is the world’s most read book, supported by scientific evidences, archaeological finds, prophecies come true, historical accuracy, unique effect on people in history and its ability to take broken lives and transform them into what God created them to be. Begin reading the four accounts of Jesus by Matthew Mark, Luke and John and prayerfully ask God to help you understand what you read. If you don’t have a bible, please contact me and Mooloolah Valley Church will be happy to send you a free bible. Happy reading! GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

GIVE LMI THE EAGLE-EYE – AND SAVE THOUSANDS Lender’s Mortgage Insurance (LMI) can be a huge cost, particularly for property investors who generally look to borrow as much as possible. Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser, Teresa Harrison, recommends borrowers get the ‘low-down’ on LMI so they can rein in the cost and potentially save thousands. “Many people get caught out by LMI, which typically works on a multiple of the loan amount,” Teresa said. “Where people are borrowing up to 80 per cent of the LVR (Loan

to Valuation Ratio, or value of the property), they don’t usually need to pay an LMI premium. However, once the LVR is more than 80 per cent, the LMI premium kicks in. “Importantly, LMI premium rates also differ depending on the amount you borrow, as well as the lender and product you choose.” “Up to $300,000, the LMI premium rates are significantly less than the LMI premiums applied to loans in the $301,000 to $500,000 range.” “For example, let’s say you

decide to buy two properties for which you borrow $300,000 for each at an LVR of 95 per cent. Most people would take out a loan for $600,000. At 95 per cent LVR, you would be paying a LMI premium of $16,644.” “However in some circumstances it could make a big difference to fund the purchase with two separate $300,000 loans – still at 95 per cent LVR.” “When it comes to calculating the LMI premium rate for these two loans, the cost could decrease to as low as $9120 – that’s a saving of more than

$7500. It’s the same properties and the same security – the loan is, simply, structured differently.” Teresa said there was a lot of mystery around how LMI worked. “LMI can be confusing, so it’s easy to see how a borrower might view taking out a single loan of $600,000 to cover two properties as the simplest option – but it could also be the Call Adviser Teresa Harrison. most costly,” she said. T: 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 “When faced with any property www.smartline.com.au/tharrison investment decision, the advice and guidance of an experienced mortgage adviser can be invaluable.” NOVEMBER 24 2010 |

It has a large kitchen (as big as the one in the main house) with dining and living area, main bedroom with bathroom and air-con, plus second bedroom or study that opens on to it’s own patio. This brick home is newly built and sits on a 1009m2 block with room to install a pool or park a caravan or boat, with a garden shed at the back. There is a well established easy maintenance garden. The rear of the house is farm land with mountain views to give the feel of being in the country. The house is in a quiet cul-de-sac and has new homes all around and is walking

WHEN QUALITY DOES MATTER

Heavy October rain followed by damaging winds has led to some tree casualties in our area. The fig tree on Old Gympie Road, the site of John Simpson’s first Hotel, was one such casualty, and severs a link with our past. Until the railway came in 1890 and Beerwah township started to grow, Coochin Creek Hotel was the hub of the district. In 1881 James Campbell had built a saw mill near the rafting grounds on Coochin Creek. John Simpson anticipated the development that would follow the opening of land for selection, and with his family’s background in the Redbank Inn, he recognised the need and potential of a similar venture at Coochin. On land he had selected at Coochin Creek, just a mile from his first bark and slab home, he built a long, low set timber hotel on the southern bank. The timber was pit sawn on site and included solid cedar flooring and tables and beech walls. An attic was built into the shingle roof. Bunyas and fig trees were planted nearby, and photos over the years recorded their growth. A sturdy building, it was to function as a hotel for the next 33 years. Cobb and Co Coaches had ceased running to Gympie in 1879, but McCallums had been awarded the coach run in 1882 and the Hotel was a recognised coach stop. William Vieritz’s daily run from Peach Trees kept both growing communities in touch. U bolts were driven into mature trees to hold the coaches and buggies, and a hitching rail stood at the side of the building. Whenever a clergyman was passing through, the bar was closed and all adjourned to the dining room for a church service. At its conclusion the bar was reopened and the ‘Business as Usual’ sign went up. The dining room was also used for the many Simpson weddings. The daily scene was a busy one. Coochin Pub had a general store, a butchery, a registered Post Office, a blacksmith and a wheelwright. A small dairy operated, beehives were kept, bread made daily, and an orchard and vegetable garden flourished behind the Pub. After the death of his wife in 1912, John built a two-story wooden hotel in Beerwah on the corner of what is now Simpson Street and Peachester Road. The liquor licence was transferred to his eldest son William, and the new venture operated as Simpson’s Beerwah Hotel. John continued to run old Coochin as a store and boarding house, helped by his eldest daughter Annie Verrent. The building became known as the Homestead. When John died in 1930, the land surrounding the old Coochin Creek Homestead was bought by the Walton family. The building was demolished and Silvie Simpson, one of John’s grandsons, brought much of it to Peachester to build his home. Thus the spirit of Old Coochin lived on.

Down & dirty with Brownie brownie@gcnews.com.au Jobs for the yard in December

• The recent rains may have leached nutrients out of your soil. So you may need to re-fertilise around your green leafy vegetables and tomatoes. • If you haven’t done it yet, prune your azaleas to keep them nice and compact, and give them a feed with azalea fertiliser. Spray them with a systemic insecticide to protect the leaves from the dreaded azalea lace bug. • Caterpillars and grasshoppers have just started to multiply and will need to be kept in check. Hand remove or spray with a natural spray (such as Dipel) every couple of days. Remember that water washes off any sprays – so retreat after rain or watering. • Fertilise your bananas and cut out any suckers you don’t want. For each mature plant, you should have one sapling and one sucker. Regularly remove yellowing leaves to keep the clump tidy. • Paw paw trees which have grown too tall can be cut back now. Cut the stem to 1m off the ground and cover the cut top with a tin can or yoghurt container. • Don’t forget to slip-slop-slap when you go out in the garden, even if it is for a short period. Try to do most of the work in the mornings or the afternoons, so that you miss the heat of the day. Take a water bottle with you too – keeping well hydrated is just as important. • Tidy up the garden for Santa – he doesn’t think too highly of a messy garden.

Rosemary's plant of the month Native Tibouchina or Blue Tongue in full sun or part shade, but is not tolerant of very dry conditions. The flowers develop into edible blue-black fruits, which are sweet to taste and leave a blue stain on the tongue (hence their other common name).

Beerburrum Bikeway Bikeway paths in Beerburrum are being expanded with construction of a new bike path along Anzac Avenue from Church Street to near Beerburrum Road. The new 1.5 metre wide bike and pathway will be constructed and completed by the end of December providing an all weather surface for pedestrians and cyclists.

With cyclone season upon us, the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) has released information brochures to help farmers ensure the safety of their horses and livestock during seasonal storms, and potential floods and cyclones. AVA spokesperson Dr Alex Burleigh warns that it’s important to also plan for the worst for our animals as well as ourselves at this time of year. “It’s best to be overly cautious when planning for these events. Preparing ahead of time and acting quickly can be the best way to keep yourself, your family, and your livestock out of harm’s way,” said Dr Burleigh. “Be prepared for possible disruption to services, including power, water and phone lines for extended periods of time. It’s important to have a plan in place, and to run through your plan before the cyclone season starts,” he said. The AVA has produced brochures about protecting horses, livestock and pets during the cyclone season. You can download these from: www.ava.com.au/publicinfo The AVA encourages farmers in affected areas to talk to their local veterinarian about planning for a cyclone or flood. Your vet will be able to help to assemble an emergency kit and prepare an evacuation plan. There are some key things to remember when preparing horses and livestock for a cyclone or flood. • Consider the safest housing locations for all animals on your property and check on the safety and stability of these enclosures. These facilities may be necessary if evacuation off your property is impossible. If the enclosure is not sound, it is safer to let your horses or livestock to remain in the paddock. • Have back up sources of food and clean water available in case flood waters cut off feed supplies or the stock feed suppliers are closed for extended periods. • On farms and rural blocks, ensure that generators are available to provide clean water for stock. Remove any debris that could cause injury during storms or strong winds. • If your land is prone to flooding it’s important to organise an alternative area to evacuate animals to. This could be a neighbour’s farm, show ground, or club grounds. • Be prepared in the event that you are not at home when a cyclone or flood hits. You can do this by providing clear signage indicating the number and location of animals, a list of emergency supplies, and making emergency plans with neighbours.

Sports results FARM UPGRADES SYSTEM TO ENSURE SAFETY Oaklands Farms Pty Ltd (Oakland Farms) grows ginger and strawberries on its Sunshine Coast farm and apart from other machinery, Oaklands Farms owned a KeyAg Squirer Clod Master Potato Harvester, which it used to harvest ginger. At the time of their incident, Oaklands Farms employed 18 full time workers and up to 60 casuals at the peak of the strawberry season. A worker was driving a tractor towing the ginger harvester when he stopped the tractor, leaving the engine going and the power take off engaged and walked to the rear of the harvester to check on the ginger that was being harvested. He noticed a buildup of grass and clods of dirt and ginger in the rotating conveyor bars of the harvester and climbed onto the harvester and kicked at the grass and clods to dear the blockage. His boot became caught and his right leg was pulled into the rotating conveyor bars of the harvester. The worker was caught in the harvester for more than an hour before emergency workers and farm management were able to free him. The rotating conveyor bars chewed into his lower leg and bone before the machine was stopped. Immediately after the incident, Workplace Health and Safety investigators attended at the farm and following a thorough investigation of the incident, the department made a decision that Oaklands Farms had contravened provisions of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995. A Workplace Health and Safety consultant who specialises in the horticulture industry visited the farm early the following day to provide support and advice to the farmer and his workers. At this meeting the consultant told the farmer about Queensland's Enforceable Undertakings, which are an alternative to going to court if the undertaking is accepted by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. Oaklands Farms then engaged the consultant to assist them to complete an application for an Enforceable Undertaking. The consultant has been involved with a number of EU's and views them as an opportunity for him to work with the employer and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland to make Queensland businesses safer. The result of an Enforceable Undertaking, which can be spread over a few years to reduce the financial impact on the business, is an occupational health and safety management system being installed into the business in accordance with the Australian Standard. Now in its second year of the undertaking, the ginger (and strawberry) farm has implemented risk assessments and induction training using Safe Work Instructions (SWI's) for the activities that workers perform on the ginger and strawberry operations of the farm and Safe Operating Procedures (SOP's) for the plant and equipment the workers operate. The Enforceable Undertaking also requires the employer to identify and implement measures that will deliver tangible benefits to workers, the industry generally and the community.

Worker benefits The General Manager and six supervisory staff attended a one and a half day training session on workplace health and safety and received a Statement of Attainment for having completed the nationally accredited Rural Production Training Package competency — RTC4701A Implement and monitor the enterprise OH&S program. All supervisors have attended first aid training and received their First Aid Certificates and a workplace health and safety committee has been established with worker representatives from the various operational areas of the farm and a special representative of the seasonal workforce.

Industry benefits The Queensland strawberry and ginger Industries have received the following: • a copy of all risk management assessment and Induction training record documentation • safety induction work instructions for worker activities and safe operating procedures for plant and equipment used in the two industries; • first aid training for workers on other farms within the industries.

Community benefits Oaklands Farms will develop a video re-enactment of the incident and present it to industry and community forums to make others aware of what can happen when people do not follow safe procedures. The health and safety culture at Oaklands Farms is now a normal part of the day-to-day operations of the business, with all workers conducting their work activities with an awareness of their safety obligations. 48 |

Landsborough Tennis Club turns 40 Contributed by Dawn Wendt, treasurer

On December 5, the Landsborough Tennis Club is inviting any interested past members to join with them to celebrate 40 years as a club. From 9.00am - 1.00pm morning tea will be provided followed by a barbeque lunch. A lot of interest was shown prior to 1970 in forming a club. The only tennis available was to play council matches against other shires. As these were not on a regular basis the community needed their own competition. Maleny District Association was already operational, so the newly formed Landsborough teams were entered. The only court for public use was a broken down bitumen one on council land near Peace Park, and so the arduous task of fund raising began. By 1981 two granite courts were opened and by 1986 they were transformed into Plexipave. Tennis was booming in the 80’s and the need for more courts was apparent. By 1989 two more Plexipave courts were opened free of debt, a credit to the dedication of the members and their generous donation of their labour. So please come along, hear some stories and enjoy some free tennis. Starts at 9.00am. Please contact Dawn 5494 1085 for further details.

End of an era for Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club Contributed by Elaine Reeves, secretary

As patrons of the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club will be aware, Gary Watts, manager of the club for the past 12 years or so, has resigned effective from October 30. Gary’s resignation was reluctantly accepted by the committee and it was with much regret that we said goodbye to Gary at a gathering held at the club on October 31. The committee thanks Gary for his dedication to the club during his time as manager, and wishes him all the very best for the future. A new manager, Phil Gins, has been appointed, commencing duties on November 15. Many locals will know Phil from his time at the Beerwah RSL and the Beerwah Golf Club. The committee, staff and members welcome Phil to the sports club and look forward to a long and happy working relationship in the future. Phil is keen to get to know members, so introduce yourself when you are next at the club.

A magician worked on a cruise ship. The audience was different each week so the magician did the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem: The captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood, he started shouting in the middle of the show, “look, It’s not the same hat!” or, “look, he’s hiding the flowers under the table!” Or “hey, why are all the cards the ace of spades?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything. It was, after all, the captain’s parrot.

Week beginning 24/11/10

Then one stormy night on the Pacific, the ship sank, drowning almost all who were on board. The magician luckily found himself on a piece of wood floating in the middle of the sea, as fate would have it ... with the parrot. They stared at each other with hatred, but did not utter a word. This went on for a day... and then two days. And then three days. Finally on the fourth day, the parrot could not hold back any longer and said... “ok, I give up. Where’s the ship?” Submitted by Des Holmsquest, Landsborough

Be careful about trusting people or situations this week. The romantic personal side of your life can be somewhat chaotic. You may be making unrealistic demands on a partner. A lot of short distance travel can be quite tiring so take things easy. A friendly conversation with an acquaintance can turn into a serious one. Good news from family about their health will be uplifting. A busy week can be quite draining. Try and not take on too much. An important letter coming can change your plans for the near future.
