Hi everyone Last week we featured a great shot of the Beerwah crocs on the front cover, and no these crocs were not the scaly kind you find at Australia Zoo with Terri, Bindi and Bob. I reckon it would be fair to say that these crocs are a lot more agile than your average croc in an enclosure. They are a highly successful dynamic cheerleading team established at Beerwah High just three years ago. Our writer Rosemary Hayes recently went out and spoke to the team and found out quite a lot about cheerleading and was impressed with how successful the team have been in their first year of competition. The team took out third place in the Queensland State Championships, second in the Australia All Star Cheer and Dance State

Championships, and were finalists in the World Cup Cheer Asia Pacific Grand Final. They were also invited to compete in the nationals in Melbourne next month. I am sure that all of us in the local area will be wishing them well, and here at GCNews we will keep track of how they go and report back. To find out more about the team you can see the story in our sports news on page 49. Go Crocs!

Regards,

Rail needs to be fast tracked, says Powell

ANZ Beerwah. by Kylie Wyer

Commuters frustrated by the arduous journey they face on the hinterland rail network are being encouraged to sign a petition to see a new rail corridor between Beerburrum and Landsborough fast tracked. LNP Shadow Minister for Transport Fiona Simpson said despite the state government spending $189 million on new and upgraded fast trains, passengers continue to travel through the Sunshine Coast hinterland at snail’s pace because of the older style tracks. She said the state government committed to upgrading the track between Beerburrum and Landsborough by mid 2012 before the last election, with the work due to be completed by 2012, but the South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program now states it won’t be completed until 2020. The section of track between Landsborough and Nambour isn’t expected to be completed until 2031. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said he receives regular correspondence from constituents frustrated by the slow speed of the rail service, which could be likened to ‘steam train speeds’. “Our modern tilt trains can travel at over 150 kms per hour, but in some sections through the hinterland, they are travelling between 20 - 30 kms per hour, hindered by the ageing track infrastructure,” Mr Powell said.

Beerwah railway station He said the delay to the upgrade was having an impact across the entire state, as the rail network was also the primary northern freight route. “Commuters and freight companies are being forced back on to our already congested highways, and with our population expected to reach half a million by 2031, it's just ludicrous to think that our public transport is not up to speed.” Mr Powell said he was looking at setting up a petition to try and get the project fast-tracked. “If people are interested in signing a petition to see the project brought forward, they should contact my office,” Mr Powell said.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas….

Landsborough

Dental Prosthetist PETER J. LANGLOIS REG. (QLD) • Acrylic Full / Lightweight Metal Partial Dentures • Relining Existing Dentures • Repairs • Mouthguards • Provider to Veterans Affairs & Private Health Funds • Phone for appointment: 5494 1711 •

We all love to admire the marvellous sight of beautifully decorated houses at Christmastime, but what we see is the result of weeks or months of hard work behind the scenes. Nobody knows this better than the entrants in our Lighting Up Glasshouse Country Christmas Lights Competition. Kim and Rhonda Petty are previous winners of the residential category including tied first place winners last year, and have just started putting up their Christmas lights for this year.

They first started entering the lights competition because people kept telling them they should. “Now we just do it every year,” Rhonda said. “We enjoy Christmas. It (the competition) makes people know that you’re here as well. You don’t want to put them up and have noone come and look at them. And people do look forward to it, people say, ‘are you doing the lights this year?’” “The competition actually makes you strive a little bit harder,” said husband Kim. So will there be any changes to their winning display this year? “We always strive to have something new every year,” said Kim. Although they have started later this year than usual they say they will get everything ready in time. “We will get it ready, we have to,” said Rhonda. “We’ve got the fire now. People really, really enjoy it. The adults and the little kids, they love it.” The only worry they have is that they aren’t sure that all the bulbs will be working. The Petty’s said if anyone has any bulbs they are not using any more and would like to pass them on to them they would be happy to take them off your hands. Bethany and Chris Casey, from Beerwah, will start to put up their lights shortly.

“We’re just looking at how we will organise the lights, as we have more than last year,” Bethany said. “We would put up lights even if it wasn’t for the competition, we just enjoy Christmas so much. We did the lights before we even had kids, it’s just fun.” To decorate they use a One of last year's award winning Christmas lights displays combination of lights, figurines and cutouts. “We’ve actually been making our own cutouts that we are looking at selling too,” said Bethany. They never worry they won’t finish decorating the house in time. “We would work until it killed us. We enjoy everybody coming and saying hello, we love it. The best part is the kids, all the kids who see them and love them,” she said.

Landsborough goes live! In what is thought to be a first for hinterland communities, the township of Landsborough is now officially online, with its own community website, www.landsborough.qld.au The new website is the result of the hard work of the Landsborough Area Community Association (LACA), using the resources of Community Geographic Domain Names, an initiative of auDA (the Australian Domain Name Administrator). Ann Husband, of LACA, who has driven the project, said the new website was a great opportunity for the local community and businesses to connect with each other. “It's all about having one location where people can search for just about anything relevant to the local area, as well as helping to promote our town,” Ann said. “We want to encourage locals to use the website as their one stop shop, and if they are part of a local group that isn’t already featured on the site, to get on board.” The website features details of community groups and the area, links to relevant websites, and a comprehensive local business directory listing. Ann said although the new website was live, there were still areas under development, and the LACA welcomed feedback. “There’s also the opportunity to make general comments on our forum page, where we encourage people to have a say on any local issue of concern,” she said. Ann said the other benefit the website offers was a personalised landsborough.qld.au email address (e.g. yourname@landsborough.qld.au), available for a small annual charge.

Ann Husband and fellow Landsborough local Susan Lowndes, who has helped Ann put a lot of the website together to date. “The benefit is that even though you may change your internet service provider, there’s no need to change your email address, saving both time and money in the long run,” Ann said. Funding was received from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to help them develop the website, and with the limited funds still available, they are looking for someone with web or graphic design skills to continue to develop the site’s business advertising. Leonie Dunbar, General Manager for CGDN services, said the CGDN initiative provides an option for community groups around Australia to apply for and manage a community website for their town. “A Geographic Domain Name website provides a huge opportunity to showcase all a township has to offer in tourism, business, sporting and community groups by providing extensive and up-to-date local information,” she said. For more information about geographic domain name websites and the benefits they offer, visit www.cgdn.org.au or by calling 1300 732 929.

A celebration to remember on the eve of Remembrance Day

Mabs and Les Day today Les and Mabs Day, from Glass House Mountains, have a lot to reminisce about at this time of year. They were married on October 31, 1944 and will this year celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary, and with the approach of Remembrance Day on November 11, it is also a time for them to reflect on their years serving their country. Les and Mabs met at a dance on base at Roseneath, west of Townsville, in 1944. Les had a unique way to get Mab’s attention. “He put his foot out and I tripped over it – or just about,” Mabs said. They married just three weeks later at Woolloongabba. Unfortunately they didn’t end up with any photos from their wedding day, as the cameraman didn’t put any film in the camera. Mabs, 87, served in the Australian Women’s Army Service from 1942 to 1945, while Les, 86, served in the Royal Australian Air Force from

Fab/Surf/ Spree 500g

1942. He spent 10 years in the air force (on and off) until he left permanently in 1952. They have three children, 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Although they moved to the Glasshouse area 11 years ago Mabs’ ancestors, the Torrens, have a strong connection to the area and were well-known for farming and roads. After she left the army, Mabs stayed home and looked after the children, but painting is a passion she has pursued for the last 30 years. After Les left the air force, he went into the trucking industry. Mabs is happy to share her tips for a long and successful marriage. “Tolerance. Accept how they are – young people give up too quickly,” she said. “To me when you’re married, you’re married,” Les said. He also thinks Mabs is pretty special. “Everything is special about her, for 66 years,” he said. If there is one thing that is clear is it how proud they are of all their family and it is the family that will ensure Les and Mabs celebrate their special day with a party. Congratulations Les and Mabs.

Oh deer, what can the matter be? Queenslanders are invited to have their say on a new strategy that will help manage feral deer in the state. Minister for Primary Industries, Fisheries and Rural and Regional Queensland Tim Mulherin said feral deer posed a serious threat to Queensland's primary producers causing extensive damage to grazing land. "They also damage the environment, pose a disease threat to livestock and carry parasites and ticks," Mr Mulherin said. He said they are also a danger to people, causing traffic accidents in built up areas. "Feral deer are a statewide problem with an estimated 30,000 deer living in 20 populations across Queensland." "Hot spot areas include the western suburbs of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, the Southern Downs area, the Charters Towers area and in the Barcaldine and Isaac regional council areas," he said. Mr Mulherin said the feral deer strategy would give landholders, industry groups, local governments and state agencies a plan to reduce the impacts of the pest species. "The idea of this strategy is to firstly make people aware of the feral deer problem, and then work together to plan the best management options for dealing with the issue," he said. Self defense course a hit

Would you know what to do if you were grabbed by a stranger, attacked by a bully or just suddenly found yourself in an unsafe situation? Thanks to a free self defense course at BADYAC, a group of Year 10 Beerwah High School girls are now better equipped to defend themselves. The girls are currently participating in weekly selfdevelopment courses on Wednesdays at BADYAC. Gail Liversidge, a BADYAC program support worker said they included a self defense course to teach the girls assertiveness and demonstrate how to take care of themselves. Martin Day and his assistant Patricia Fast kindly donated their services free-of-charge for the one and a half hour self-defense course. Martin is an ex special forces officer, and has been awarded the title of Shihan (Master Instructor of his own training system) and currently holds the rank of fifth Dan Karate Black Belt. Originally from England, he moved to Australia in 2004 and is now based at Noosa Heads. All the students were enthusiastic participants as they practised the self defense manoeuvres demonstrated by Martin. “We learnt how we can easily get out of things without really hurting anyone if we need to,” Karlee said. If we were put in the situation on the street of someone wanting to attack us we can get out of it pretty easily. A lot of people have got a lot out of it.” Katrina agreed. “We learnt how to defend ourselves if we get into situations where people try to hurt us. I’m more confident now I know all the different points and everything to defend myself. It was worth coming along.”

Pauline Fast, Martin Day and Teula Degars Behaviour Support Consultant at Beerwah High (bottom row second from right) with the Year 10 students Martin will continue to offer his free classes to community groups. “In my view it’s really important for these courses to be accessible to local community at all levels. I’d hate to think that there are vulnerable people out there, and because they can’t afford to come to my courses they miss out.” Martin pointed out that danger isn’t always from strangers. “There’s so many people from all walks all life that get major aggravation in the workplace and at school - like bullies and people getting really aggressive towards them. My mission has always

been ongoing, that these people that are being picked on are able to do something to protect themselves. I feel very strongly about it,” he said. He is always amazed at the change in people after his courses. “As soon as you show them what they are able to do their confidence levels just rocket in a major way. The most important thing is having the confidence to react, reaction is the key.” If you would like to find out more about the courses Martin offers check out www.martindayfitness.com or www.SpecialForcesFitnessAndSelfDefense.com or phone 5430 6662.

BEEPers make a difference to the environment

Contributed by Amanda Winchester, librarian

Ezio De Angelis is often described as Austtralia’s foremost authority on spirit communication. His inspired , vibrant demonstration of psychic mediumship has brought comfort to countless people across the country. Awe inspiring......healing......loving.....accurate......are the words most used to describe Ezio’s mediumship

Students at Beerwah State School have taken on the challenge of environmental sustainability. One student from each class (Prep to Year 7) has joined the Beerwah Environmental Education Program Team (Beepers). The school has recently finished their SEMP plan, which is their School Environmental Management Plan. The school aims to integrate sustainability into the curriculum by including environmental education in the whole school curriculum plan. The teachers are committed to educating their students in sustainable practices and raising their awareness of environmental issues. The four key parts of the SEMP plan are: reduction of waste to landfill, reduction of electricity usage, reduction of water use, and increase in biodiversity in the school grounds. The students are collecting baseline data on the school’s current environmental impact and aim to reduce the school’s ecological footprint through the implementation of the SEMP plan. They are also conducting a waste audit with the help of Sandie Johnston, the Sunshine Coast Council Waste 2 Resource Education Coordinator. They have also visited the Beerwah Recycling Centre and found out more about what can be recycled, and seen some great examples of how to reuse. The students are enjoying increasing the biodiversity by gardening. They have already improved two gardens in the grounds and have big plans for more.

Beerwah State School students enjoy making rafts The sound of chirping birds in the morning was relaxing when we opened our eyes and stirred from our bunks. We had three fun-filled but exhausting days from October 19 - 21. The water pushing against my paddle as our canoe sped through the water was an amazing sight. Capsizing the canoe in the cold water was great. Coen and I had priceless looks on our faces. Horse riding was awesome. Winding along the bush trail was an exciting experience. Swinging on the rope into the dam was great fun and so was making rafts even though they all sank. Archery was fun. We burst balloons, hit targets and the ground as well. The food was mouth watering and appetising. At night relaxing around the campfire, singing and sharing songs was a really amazing time. We all want to return to this fantastic place!

Care Centre had great week learning all about people in their community recently. They had the wonderful police officers from Landsborough Police station join them for a visit on the Tuesday and the fabulous firemen from Beerwah visit on the Thursday. Constable Brendon and Constable Damien talked to the children about stranger danger, what to do if you get lost in a shopping centre, road safety, the importance of bike helmets and calling triple 0. The children then got to look over the police car, see some of the equipment used by the police (trying a pair of handcuffs on an unsuspecting Miss Andrea) and listen to the sirens (everybody loved this bit!).

loved the fire truck

Fireman Mike and Fireman Rob taught the children about ‘get down low and go go go’, ‘stop, drop and roll’, good fires and bad fires and not to play with matches and lighters. After the talk (and millions of questions) Fireman Mike showed the children the fire truck. It was interesting to see the equipment on the fire truck and hear the siren but the best part was when all of the children had a turn of the fire hose. The children and staff would like to thank these wonderful men for their time, commitment and patience with the thousands of questions!

Dads night at Landsborough Kindy The Landsborough Community Kindergartens’ annual dads and special friends night was a great success. Sandcastles were built, paintings created, puzzles completed, stories read, games played and much much more. The children had lots of fun and we think the dads did too. From the schools 2011 school terms and student-free days announced State schools can plan next year's professional development for their teachers, and, more importantly, families can plan their holidays for the new year with the announcement of school terms and student-free days for 2011. Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said student-free days were usually held about the same time each school year. Next year's term dates for state schools: • Term 1: January 24 - April 15 (12 weeks); • Term 2: April 27 - June 24 (9 weeks); • Term 3: July 11 - September 16 (10 weeks); and • Term 4: October 3 - December 9 (10 weeks). Next year's pupil-free days for state schools: • The last two days of the summer holiday, January 20-21; • The last day of term 1, April 15; • The first day of term 3, July 11; and • The third Monday of term 4, October 17. For more information and to download the school calendar, visit the Department of Education and Training's website at www.deta.qld.gov.au

Glenview School all hands and crazy hair It was a busy week at Glenview State School last week, when they hosted a pair of giant visiting hands, and crazy hair, all on the one day. Last Monday, the giant TORK Hygiene Hands visited the school as part of their free dispensers for schools program, and they were eagerly greeted by a mass of children all sporting wild and crazy hair styles as part of a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. The students managed to raise an impressive $270.00 through gold coin donations.

Beerwah students Khaki It in the lead up to Steve Irwin Day Alannah does it! Recently we’ve been following the progress of young Beerwah student Alannah McLeod, who had been busy recycling mobile phones as part of the Answer the Call program to help save gorillas in central Africa from habitat destruction and poaching. Last week, all of Alannah’s hard work finally paid off, with the news that her successful campaign will see her and her year two classmates become zookeepers for a day at Australia Zoo.

Last week, a group of students, part of the Land for Wildlife group, presented the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital with a collection of towels. The group, led by year 11 student Terina Moana, have been rallying up local residents and businesses to donate old towels for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, and in a few short weeks, they have managed to donate over 30 towels. Teacher Laura Adler said the students had wanted to do something for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital after visiting earlier in the year.

“They knew the hospital was always on the lookout for towels, so the students decided that was a practical way they could help out,” Laura said. The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital’s General Manager, Gail Gipp was glad to receive the new load of towels. “Towels are definitely one of the things that are always in short supply. We use them for a host of different purposes in the hospital, for the operating table, for bedding and transport - we can always put them to good use,” Gail said.

Kick off the festive season in good style and taste at La Stella Doro With only seven weeks until Christmas, the festive season is definitely creeping up at a phenomenal rate, and if you haven’t already organised all those end of year functions and social catch-ups, time is fast running out. For something a bit different this year, why not try the tempting array of flavours and great atmosphere at La Stella Doro? Conveniently located in the heart of Beerwah, in Simpson Street, La Stella Doro is the perfect venue for your next function, whether it is an informal dinner with friends, an office party, or simply a night off from kitchen duties. Its new menu, which features all types of fresh seafood, offers the top quality you could expect from an upmarket restaurant, but at hinterland prices. If you are a seafood lover you will want to try the mixed seafood pasta, which has half a crab, Moreton bay bug, baby octopus and mussels in a rich wine and cream sauce. And the presentation of the Blue Swimmers which are served up with wine, garlic, fresh basil in a cream sauce and served with spaghetti almost looks too good to eat. And if you need any more reason to come in and check out the food and great atmosphere, you can also partake in their hit and win dart competition, with all proceeds going towards the Rural Fire Brigade. Hit a bullseye, and $2.00 goes to the Rural Fire Brigade, and you can win a voucher for four people to receive 50 per cent off. Hit two bulleyes and receive a FREE dinner voucher! Who could ask for a better, more satisfying way to support a worthy local cause? La Stella Doro is open from 3.30pm until late, Monday to Sunday, phone them on 5494 6266.

What’s your big idea?

Local businesses are being encouraged to get on board with a new initiative that will see successful, innovative business ideas supported with grants of up to $50,000 from the state government. The program, ‘What’s Your Big Idea Queensland?’ will invite businesses across the State to put together a proposal that can be supported with up to $50,000 from the Queensland Government. Premier Anna Bligh said the program would be jointly run with the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) and would be open to small-to-medium enterprises employing up to 200 people. Ai Group Queensland Director, Matthew Martyn-Jones said it was critically important to support innovative ideas and their commercialisation to help give businesses a boost in the face of the pressures on industry arising from the minerals boom. “Such impacts including the high dollar, pressure on wages, skill shortages and interest rates, are impacting on productivity, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing and this program will both raise awareness of the importance of innovation and give successful business applications under the scheme some support to re-think their business model, develop new products or processes and contribute to making their enterprises and Queensland more productive and profitable.” Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce president Kel McNamara said he agreed with Matthew Martyn-Jones comments, and encouraged local businesses to take advantage of this opportunity.

‘Life is what happens while you are planning other things’. I read this somewhere a long time ago, but it came back to me recently when thinking over current events organised the by the Glasshouse Country Toastmasters. We were very fortunate in mid September to find a new home - the hall at the back of the Church on the Rise, became our new meeting room for the Toastmaster’s club. This new venue gives us the opportunity to grow in membership as the annex room at the library became too small. Needless to say, with plenty of room, we would love to welcome new members. Our first competition in our new home was held on September 23 with Jen Hamilton, Jenny Moore, Peter Agapow and Robert Thompson the winners from our four different contests. On October 9 Toastmasters organised a Rock and Roll charity night at the community hall in Beerwah. This fantastic night was organised by one of our members, Allie Lovett, with help from her fellow toastmasters, the proceeds from this evening were donated to the Beerwah High School chaplaincy.

On October 14 we had a combined meeting with the Toastmasters from Toowoomba, Kawana Waters and Kilcoy. What a meeting that was! Lots of laughter and camaraderie with lunch at the Beerwah Hotel to finish a great morning. Sunday, October 17 saw our contest winners competing against the other five clubs in our area. About 70 Toastmasters gathered in the sports club in Glasshouse to be entertained by the very best speakers of the six Clubs. Our guest speaker for the day was Tracey Keller, a well known artist, her paintings are amazing and her generosity in donating some as prices for our raffle was very much appreciated. Our advanced speech craft course on the Monday night is unfortunately drawing to an end, one more meeting in November will be held before we’re coming together for the combined Christmas party with the Thursday morning club. Overall a very busy but entertaining and fun month. If you would like to be part of our dynamic Toastmaster’s group and at the same time learn to boost your self confidence and speaking skills, why not give us a call on 5496 9855 to talk to Martine or 5493 0650 to talk to Kerry. We would love to hear from you!

Forget filling up at the petrol pump this Christmas, from December 26 to January 9, all buses on the Sunshine Coast will be free in a move by Sunshine Coast Council to bust congestion, free up parking and encourage sustainable travel. For the first time, the free service will apply to every single public bus route on the Sunshine Coast, including all TransLink Sunbus services, Hinterland Connect, Flexilink, Beerwah-Landsborough-Maleny—even the Council Cabs will be free. Integrated Transport Portfolio Councillor Vivien Griffin said that the extension to the free holiday bus service is just one exciting initiative funded by the Public Transport Levy. From December, head to council’s website for timetables and dates.

They’re yellow, white and green and keeping cyclists safe

New bicycle symbols painted on the roads are there to make it safer for bike riders—Sunshine Coast Council’s share with care campaign explains what these symbols mean. On-road provisions for cyclists now include bicycle lanes, green bicycle zones and bicycle awareness zones. • Bicycle Lanes are marked by a WHITE bicycle symbol inside a continuous white line. They are for the exclusive use of cyclists but may be used by motor vehicles for 50 metres prior to turning. Cyclists are required to ride inside the lane if it is safe and practical to do so. Where a cycling lane is provided vehicle drivers should not drive or park in the bicycle lane unless turning. • Green Paint is used to highlight areas of potential conflict between cyclists and motor vehicles. It is often used at entries and exits of intersections and roundabouts and across slip lanes. Where green paint is used, motorists should pay extra attention, look for cyclists and ensure they don’t cut them off when turning. • Bicycle Awareness Zones (BAZ) are identified by a YELLOW bicycle symbol and are areas that must be shared by drivers and riders. They are used if the road is not wide enough for an exclusive bicycle lane. The yellow symbols often sit over a break in a white line. In this instance cyclists may ride either side of the white line. The yellow symbols may also be used in the centre of lanes where there is not enough space for a car to overtake a cyclist safely. • Differences between a Bicycle Lane and a Bicycle Awareness Zone. Bicycle lanes are usually wide enough for the cyclist to ride inside the lane, whereas a BAZ may not be. In the case of a BAZ, cyclists may ride inside or outside the lane and drivers and cyclists need to share the road space. Council’s integrated transport team leader Nigel Walker said it is important to know how to overtake a cyclist safely. He said motorists need to give cyclists plenty of space on the road and leave at least one metre between their vehicle and the cyclist. “A common misconception is that cyclists can only ride in single file but legally they can ride two abreast on the roads—this law is standard throughout Australia. “When passing a pack of cyclists who may be riding two by two, motorists should treat it as if they were passing one vehicle; check there is enough room to pass safely and check mirrors and blind spots when pulling back in. News in brief

Extra long weekend next year

Queensland workers will enjoy a rare five-day long weekend next Easter as the result of a once-in-a-generation clash of dates. Industrial Relations Minister Cameron Dick said for the first time since Queensland’s public holiday laws were introduced in 1983, Easter Monday and Anzac Day would clash in 2011. As a result, Tuesday April 26, 2011, will be a substitute public holiday for Easter Monday. The Minister said the decision won’t result in an extra public holiday - it is merely transferring a public holiday that workers are entitled to, to the following day. The decision means that employees working on either April 25 or 26 next year, or both will get public holiday penalty rates according to their relevant award or agreement. Queensland public holidays for the Easter period in 2011 will be observed on Good Friday (April 22) Easter Saturday (April 23), Anzac Day (Monday, April 25) and a substitute public holiday for Easter Monday on Tuesday, April 26.

Obituaries as a source of information Contributed by Maureen Glover

The family historian can discover a wealth of information about their ancestors from the Obituaries of some, and absolutely none from others. The obituary of one ancestor tells me that he possessed all virtues (if the compiler of the obituary is to be believed) but gave no personal or family details at all. Several others, however, have included birth dates and places, year of arrival in Australia, sometimes even the name of the ship, plus the names of offspring. This is useful if daughters’ married names are unknown. The obituary of one ancestor, born in England, not only gave her date of birth but also her husband’s death date and age at death as well as the fact that she was left to raise 16 children on her own, four of whom were step children. We, her descendants, knew of the existence of two stepchildren but this information confirmed our suspicions that her husband had indeed fathered an extra two

children. Whether within wedlock or not, we don’t know, but this information will now send us on a new search. Her obituary went on to tell of her years in the USA, and her arrival in Queensland. In this case, her obituary was altogether a goldmine of information for her descendants. My ancestors have been, for the most part, farmers leading ordinary lives so don’t assume it is only those in the public arena who will have their obituaries published. Local newspapers of the day have been the source of most of those I have found. A great boon to family historians is the availability of old newspapers on line worldwide. Check out old newspapers with coast and hinterland content at www. nambour-chronicle.com. Beerwah Family History Group meets at the Beerwah library on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Day for Daniel

Parliamentary News

It was great to be able to get involved in assisting the Daniel Morcombe Foundation in organising Day for Daniel commemorations in the Australian Parliament House and also the Queensland Parliament.

This week I had the opportunity to talk on the Police Legislation Amendment Bill and state my support for changes that allow police to issue on the spot fines for public nuisance offences. Too much of our police officers’ time is consumed by these minor offences and so the changes will allow them to focus on the more serious matters confronting our communities. I also spoke on the Manufactured Homes Amendment Bill, one of those Bills we’ve been waiting a long time for. A full copy of my speech and all others that I made this week including on education and training and Caloundra South, can be viewed on my website www. andrewpowell.com.au

The Prime Minister Julia Gillard agreed to wear a black Morcombe Foundation scarf and the Leader of the Liberal National Opposition Tony Abbott wore a red Morecombe Foundation tie on the October 28 (the closest sitting day to Day for Daniel on October 29). Several other key members of the Australian Parliament, including The Speaker Harry Jenkins, Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop and Leader of Opposition Business Christopher Pyne also wore ties and scarves on the day to draw attention to the child safety message, the work of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation in spreading that message, and also the ongoing quest for answers in the Daniel Morcombe case. For more information log on to danielmorcombe. com.au or dayfordaniel.com.au

Update on changes in speed on Steve Irwin Way Thanks to those people that called the office to ask why the sign on Steve Irwin Way showing the 100km speed limit had not been changed to the 80km as was decided at a July meeting of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council Speed Management Committee. I was advised in writing in August the change would occur within six weeks and we are now fast approaching 12 weeks since that notification. I have contacted Main Roads and they are investigating the delay and will have the signs changed as soon as possible.

Out and About It has been a busy few weeks around the electorate – I’ve managed to fit in two awards nights and charity golf day in Caboolture, and mobile offices in Glass House, Beerwah and a few in the north of the electorate. The Glass House mobile office is always busy and it was great to catch up with so many locals. I also attended the Glass House Chamber of Commerce meeting and caught up with some of our local business identities. Everybody is certainly doing it tough these days and I appreciated the chance to hear how local business are coming together to try and survive the tough times.

There will be a choice of trees, natives and ground covers and a council horticulturalist will be on hand. Please bring your rates notice for stamping. If you have notices from past years these will be honoured as well. Residents are eligible to two free trees per rates notice. More days are being organised in other townships and everyone is welcome to visit all locations if times are more suitable.

Anzac Ave Beerburrum pathway

Council will be starting construction in early November of a 1.5 metre wide concrete pathway along Anzac Avenue between Beerburrum Road and Church Street, Beerburrum. The works will be constructed on the road reserve, and are expected to take about three weeks. During construction, property access may be affected for short durations; your patience is appreciated during this time.

Missing footpath Mooloolah Connection Road

My office has received a number of enquiries regarding this project. It’s a cycle network funded, off road pathway project across the front of the sports ground on Mooloolah Connection Road. As this road is under State Government control, Council must obtain their approval to construct a path. Originally, Council was advised by the Department of Main Roads and Transport (DMTR) that the path must be located on the property side of the power poles, resulting in property impact and land acquisition which Council felt was unnecessary. Fortunately after lengthy negotiations with DTMR they have now relaxed their position on the location of the pathway, and the design is back on track. Construction will take place in early 2011.

The construction tender selection process has been completed and the builders are scheduled to start work on site second week of November 2010. At this stage we are confident that the new centre can be constructed by June 2011, although the impending wet season might cause delays. Further updates will follow as the construction progresses.

Free holiday bus 2010 / 2011

As a result of the highly successful Free Holiday Buses over the past Christmas / New Year periods in Noosa and the recent addition of Route 600 Maroochydore to Caloundra bus service in 2009; Council has approved Free Holiday Buses to run again this year. In addition all public bus services across the entire Sunshine Coast region will be funded by the PT Levy. The proposal has been negotiated with Translink, who have given their full support. The service will operate for 15 days from December 26 to January 9 and will include TransLink Sunbus routes (25 routes across the Coast), Hinterland Connect Service, Beerwah-Landsborough-Maleny Service, Flexilink and Council Cabs. Council works with local service stations to get approvals over the line Council has contacted close to 70 local businesses in the region, including some in this division, to advise of changes to environmental legislation that requires them to upgrade their operations in accordance with best practice. The businesses, mainly old service stations and poultry farms, need to be regulated to minimise impacts on the surrounding environment. Classified as Environmentally Relevant activities (ERAs) they have the potential to pollute air, waterways or land. Council recognises the need for these businesses and the jobs they provide and will work with the affected businesses to help make the process as easy as possible. These businesses need to contact council before December 31 this year as advised in the letters sent to them from council.

Queensland businesses, schools and community groups are invited to show true-blue support for World Diabetes Day on November 14 – either by shining blue-light on buildings or hosting a ‘Blue Do’. The World Diabetes Day Blue Monument Challenge last year saw more than 1,000 landmarks around the globe illuminated blue, including 23 sites across Queensland, and this year, Diabetes Australia – Queensland, is this year calling on all Queenslanders to shine blue light on local monuments, landmarks, iconic buildings and local businesses to raise awareness about the growing impact of diabetes in society. Diabetes is growing at an epidemic rate, with more than 50 Queenslanders diagnosed every day. Already more than 250,000 Queenslanders have the condition and a staggering two million Queensland adults are at increased risk of diabetes. Ahead of World Diabetes Day, Queenslanders are also encouraged to host a ‘Blue Do’ on November 12, to help raise funds for diabetes. Schools, clubs and workplaces can get involved by wearing blue and making a donation to Diabetes Australia – Queensland. Diabetes Australia – Queensland, is producing School Kits for teaching primary and secondary school children about diabetes.

Movember – are you ready to take the challenge? Each year Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in Australia and around the world, with the sole aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts. The rules are simple; register online at Movember.com and start the month of Movember clean shaven, before growing a Mo. Money raised in Australia is shared equally between programs targeting prostate cancer and male depression. Funds are committed to our men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue – the national depression initiative and the Movember Foundation. Together, the three channels work to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world class programs in the fields of research, education, support, and awareness.

All participants are asked to register online. Visit www.diabetesqld.org.au and click on the World Diabetes Day icon. Are you ready to take the challenge? We’d like to hear from readers who are taking on the Movember challenge this month. Simply drop us a line at editorial@gcnews.com.au or give us a call on 5494 6066, and together we can rally to raise support and awareness for this worthy campaign.

Get ready for nation’s first Paid Parental Leave Scheme

Parents and employers should get ready to benefit from the introduction of Australia’s first Paid Parental Leave scheme on January 1 next year. The Government has also made it easier for expectant parents to plan for their baby’s arrival by opening applications for Paid Parental Leave three months before their baby’s due date. An information campaign is currently underway to make sure that families and employers are ready for the start date, which will provide eligible working parents of babies born or adopted from January 1, 2011, with parental

leave pay for up to 18 weeks at the minimum wage (currently $570.00 a week before tax). Parents can find out more by visiting Family Assist website or calling 13 61 50. Employers can find out more, including how to register to provide the Government-funded parental leave from January 1 next year by contacting the Centrelink Business Hotline on 13 11 58 or visiting Centrelink website. Last week, we took the opportunity to ask locals what they thought of the new scheme, which seems to have received overwhelming support with those residents we spoke with.

thought it was a good idea, but a bit unfair on the people who choose to stay home to look after their kids. “I think it should be more equal,” he said. 2 Beerburrum’s Theresa Nelson said if parents have to take time out to be able to look after their family, they should be entitled to it. “Family should always come first,” she said. 3 Steve Guszlovan of Beerwah said he thought it was a brilliant idea. “A lot of parents are struggling as it is, and it gives them an extra helping hand to make ends meet. “It should have been done ages ago.” 4 Jessi Beasant of Woodford, who is pregnant with twins, agreed it was a really good initiative. “I think it’s going to be good for women in my age group to get employment a lot easier.

I’m hoping my babies will last until then, I’m due early January but I’m having twins, so they could go early.” 5 Beerwah resident Linda Bibo said it was a great thing, but it had been a long time coming. “The only problem is where does the government get the money from?” 6 Beerwah grandparent Richard Plantinga said he was in favour of it, as being a grandparent, he knew what it was like to struggle. “To be able to not struggle so hard and still achieve seeing the kids grow up in the first 18 weeks of their lives is very important – it’s the bonding between the child and the parents.” 7 Beerwah resident Wendy Shaw agreed. “It will be a good help for parents. It will give them a head start to spend more close time with their children,” she said.

Things are moving along in the planning for the Glasshouse country Festival with a number of groups confirming their events and already hard at work making them happen. Last week I was really pleased to hear that the Beerwah Lions Club will be organising an Art Show as part of the Festival. This is excellent news as Glasshouse Country has a very strong and diverse group of artists who will no doubt embrace the opportunity to be part of our very own local art show. Another event that is powering long is the ‘Kero Lamp Heritage Trail’ which will run on Sunday, June 5 and will incorporate the many historic sites and buildings throughout the local area. The event is being co-ordinated by Steve Ralph and Ron Gillander so is in very capable hands. I have also approached the school community to see if they would support a ‘School’s Spectacular’ the event would be organised centrally and each of the schools in the local area would be asked to provide a couple of acts as part of the program. If you would like to know more or think a community group that you are involved in could come up with an activity to be part of the festival please feel welcome to come along to our next Community Planning Meeting to be held at the Beerwah Library on Tuesday, November 9 from 2.30pm. Or if you would like to find out more, please email info@ glasshousecountryfestival.com.au or give me a call on 0427 606 240.

I can’t stop the rain Due to the unfavourable long range weather forecasts, the Friends of Ebenezer have had to postpone their proposed outdoor event to be held at Tanawha on Saturday, November 13. Mine host, African born Jeremy from On Mountain View Restaurant has come to the rescue. He, together with the FOEA are planning a wonderful African Adventure on Saturday, November 20. You’ll experience a three course African themed dinner along with the music of Malcolm Holz. There will also be an awesome auction and raffle. What better reason to get together, than to help support 350 orphaned children living in Livingstone, Zambia. Join us and relax with drinks from 6.15pm onwards with dinner to follow. Apart from the great work of saving children’s lives in the Ebenezer school and orphanage in Livingstone Zambia, a few friends have donated money to build a widow and her daughter a home to replace the appalling living conditions they were in. This will be the Friends of Ebenezer’s last fundraiser for the year, get in early so you don’t miss out on a ticket. Pre-paid tickets essential at $55.00, available from the Bower Bird on Maple street, Maleny; at Network Video, Landsborough or Lenore on 5429 6194 or email: admin@friendsofebenzeraustralia.com

Forget-me-knot Day Buy a knot and donate this ‘Forget-me-knot’ Day Friday, November 12 when Australians are encouraged to show their support for more than two million adult survivors of childhood abuse. Forget-me-knot Day is an initiative of ASCA (Adults Surviving Child Abuse), the key organisation advancing the needs of Australian adults who have experienced child abuse, and a further eight million directly affected by it. The knot in Forget-me-knot Day is symbolic of the ‘tangle’ of childhood abuse, which is often a lifelong challenge to unravel. ASCA is calling on all Australians to donate and help adult survivors to reconnect with their families, friends and the community, by buying a tangled knot available at www.asca.org.au/forgetmeknot ASCA works to empower survivors, while also establishing a healthy support network and build lasting connections to society.

Pink ribbon breakfast success

This is just a short note to say thank you very much to the Glasshouse Country News and the community of Beerwah for their support of our Pink Ribbon Breakfast that we hosted on Monday, October 25 at The Terraces. We raised $726.30 towards a very worthwhile cause. The ladies and men had a beautiful breakfast at The Terraces and were amazed at the story that Heather told us about her road to recovery and the journey she has taken over the last 40 years as a breast cancer survivor. She provided inspiration to us all! Thank you to the people who donated items for our silent auction…what a success and some fierce competition for Rosemary’s rug! Congratulations to Marina, winner of the best dressed in pink on the day. We hope to do it all over again next year! Tracey and Rosemary Westpac Beerwah

Road a disgrace

The section of Roys Road from Mawson’s Road to the Rural Fire Brigade Shed is, yet again, a disgrace. No doubt it is due for another upgrade, which will, yet again, be undone in no time. I think the increasing traffic on this road warrants a proper upgrade. Currently, the tarred strip is being hacked away as cars go off on the dirt to safely pass. Edges are rough and deep putting tyres at risk. The dirt sides are either a dustbowl with stones flying, or a series of mud puddles. At dusk, it can be almost impossible to see, with headlights shining into dust or water, in patchy light conditions. And meeting a truck coming through at 80k is not funny! Much of the section from Steve Irwin Way to the Mawson’s Road intersection is also falling rapidly into disrepair. Please councillors, find the dollars to tar this section wide and deep once and for all. Leigh King

I’d rather walk

Further to Andrew Powell’s comments in GCNews October 27, the government and the railways only need to look at their train timetables to improve transit times, one glaring example is the train down on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. It leaves Nambour at 2.37pm, all stations to Caboolture, and terminates there, and then there is a 25 minute wait for the train, all stations to the City. I live at Beerburrum and by that service it takes 1 hour 40 mins, it used to be faster by steam train. NW Martin Beerburrum

Not such an elusive creature?

Thanks to those readers who contacted us in relation to the ‘elusive creature’ published in Letters to the Editor in last week’s edition of GCNews. Myra from Peachester believes it’s either a bush rat or antechinus (native rat). She said the way you can tell the difference is antechinus has four rows of sharp teeth and a long snout, whereas the bush rat has beaver like teeth and a short snout.

Our resident in house expert, Brownie, agrees, however says it’s probably not an antechinus, but rather a bush rat. He says the bush rat is about the same body size as a normal rat (maybe a little smaller), and the animal in the photo had a body about the size of a normal mouse (which is the same size as the antechinus). The bush rat also has a tail the same length or shorter than its body, whereas the feral rat has a tail longer than its body. They also have different ears – the bush rat has very round ears, while the feral rat has more pointed ears. A resident from Elimbah has also weighed in on the debate, suggesting it is a common dunnart. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to provide a comment.

Help Daniel on his fundraising quest

My son Daniel is one of two Year 12 students from Beerwah State High School who is heading to Tanzania in January. He will volunteer at the school of St Jude which was established by Gemma Sisia, a native of Armidale, NSW. My son is trying to raise as much money as possible to assist in the building of a new boarding house for the school. To quote Gemma, the boarding house “guarantees healthy living conditions, nutritious meals and an appropriate educational environment in which a child can thrive.” So I’m asking our local community to please support him in his quest to raise money towards the building of a new boarding house which will house 80 students as well as Australian volunteers. Local businesses have already received some information through the post (and a bit of leg work by Dan and myself) and as Dan’s very proud mother, I ask you to please support him as much as you can in his fundraising efforts! Daniel has said he’s glad that he can help raise awareness of the School of St Jude. “I’m excited that I am actually going to be seeing the school myself in January,” Daniel said. “The School of St Jude only accepts children from really poor families who wouldn’t normally be able to send their child to school. A lot of the children have to walk a long way to school so a new boarding house to stay in during the week would help them enormously. “I believe it is every child’s right to have an education and I know that my fundraising efforts will make a difference,” Daniel said. Daniel has already held a small raffle amongst school friends and is currently doing a chocolate drive but he’s hoping he can gain more support from our community. If you would like more information or would like to donate to Daniel’s fundraising effort, please call 5439 9362. Donations can also be made through the following website http://www.gofundraise.com. au/DanWheatley Thank you in advance for helping Daniel and the School of St Jude to fight poverty through education. GET PROFESSIONAL WITH YOUR MORTGAGE Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser, Teresa Harrison, provides her tips on professional package home loans. What is a Professional Package? Over recent years Professional Packages have changed substantially. Originally, to qualify for a professional pack a borrower had to be earning a higher income. These days Professional Packages are simply loans that attract an interest rate discount for higher loan amounts. For example typical interest rate discounts would be:

• $150K - < $250K - 0.50% p.a. discount off the standard rate. • $250K - < $500K - 0.70% p.a.discount off the standard rate. • $500K+ - 0.70% p.a. discount off the standard rate. Who qualifies? Any credit worthy borrower who would typically wish to borrow a larger amount. Professional Packages normally suit a higher income borrower. What are the benefits? Professional packages would

normally offer discounts on fees, general banking and credit card services. A typical discount structure would be: • Personal loan discounts 0.50% p.a. • Reduction in fixed interest rate. • Gold Credit Card - No Annual fee for the first year. • For new credit card holders intro rate for 6 months Annual Card Fee waived for every year the customer remains in the Premier Advantage package. • Home & contents insurance - 10% discount

on combined Home and Contents policies. • Risk Insurance - 5% reduction on the annual premium for new policies only. What are the potential shortcomings of Professional Packages? Professional package will offer Insurance and credit card discounts, which may be Call Adviser Teresa Harrison. T: 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 of little or no use to certain www.smartline.com.au/tharrison borrowers. Also certain professional packages may attract a substantial early payment fee if the loan is repaid early as well as an annual fee. NOVEMBER 3 2010 |

Council no longer taking building certification applications Sunshine Coast Council’s building certification business – Country & Coastal Certifiers – is no longer taking new building certification applications. Council’s Director of Development Services, Julie Edwards, said this follows a recent decision to stop accepting requests for building certification works outside of the council area. Both decisions are in line with council’s recent decision to close Country & Coastal Certifiers. “The private certification industry provides an excellent and well-used service in our council area so, in September, council decided to close its building certification business—to both remove itself from competition with local commercial providers and to enable us to concentrate on core council building services,” Ms Edwards said. “As part of the staged process to work towards the planned closure, Country & Coastal Certifiers will not take any new applications for building

certification services from Monday, November 1, 2010.” She said council will contact applicants by letter to ensure any outstanding final inspections for existing approvals are arranged. She said while applications were taken up until Monday, November 1, the date for the closure of the business is yet to be finalised. “Meeting clients’ needs remain a top priority at this time and I want to emphasise that we are committed to ensuring the process is as smooth as possible, while keeping clients informed well in advance of any further changes.” “All our client’s needs will continue to be met and we will keep them informed well in advance of any further changes that may impact on the services offered.” Anyone with questions should contact the Building Services Manager on 5420 8601.

Unusual weather conditions prompts Fire Danger Period cancellation Unusually heavy rainfall combined with an early start to the storm and cyclone season has prompted the cancellation of the Queensland Fire Danger Period. Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said after two months of the declaration, the main threat of fire season had passed. "Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) declared the Fire Danger Period on August 29 following last year's horror fire season which saw thousands of bushfires devastate parts of the state," he said. "Thankfully this year we have had a reduced fire threat; the vegetation is far less dry and the drought index is much more favourable. Those

factors, combined with the current La Nina weather pattern bringing wetter conditions, have led to the QFRS Commissioner Lee Johnson declaring that the Fire Danger Period is no longer required." The Minister said the Fire Danger Period was intended to remain in place until January 2, 2011 or until the enhanced threat of bushfire had passed and that the public had adhered to fire restrictions very well. QFRS Acting Assistant Commissioner of Rural Operations Paul Adcock said it was important that residents remain prepared for the possibility of bushfire. More information on bushfire preparation can be found at: www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au

New pool safety laws to start

The second and final stage of Queensland's tough new swimming pool safety laws will come into effect on December 1. Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Stirling Hinchliffe said the new laws, which include mandatory pool safety certificates and inspections, would be in place in time for the first day of summer. He said the laws would help save lives and make Queensland pools even safer. Under the new laws, pool owners will have five years to make sure their pool complies with the pool safety standard unless they sell or lease the property first, the Minister said. If the seller hasn't provided a compliance certificate, the owner of the pool is required to get a current pool safety certificate within 90 days. The maximum penalty for non-compliance is $16,500. For shared pools associated with short-term accommodation, such as hotels, motels, backpackers or hostels, a six month phase-in period applies to obtain a pool safety certificate. Mr Hinchliffe said there would be some flexibility for pool owners. "Impracticality and disability exemptions will be available under the new laws from December 1 and pool owners seeking an exemption can start discussing this with their local government now," Mr Hinchliffe said. "Impracticality exemptions will only be available where compliance with the pool safety standard is not practicable." More information is available at http://www.dip. qld.gov.au/pool-safety/stage-two.html

So what has cats and dogs got to do with today’s column? The bible tells me that when it comes to God, we humans tend to treat God in much the same way as cats treat humans. We either ignore God, or, sometimes just like cats; we pretend to be God’s friend because we want something. That’s what the apostle Paul means in the book of Ephesians 2 when he says we humans are dead in our trespasses and sins - we are slaves and trapped to our culture as well as our desires. We can’t help ourselves, it’s our nature. Just as cats can’t help themselves because they are cats, so we can’t help behaving the way we do toward God because it’s our nature. That’s why Paul goes on to say that we are by nature children of God’s wrath. Paul describes us before we became a Christian as dead in our sin. I have seen lots of dead things on the road, things like cane toads, and the thing about dead things is they do nothing. And Paul says that when it comes to having a friendship with God we are like dead people we don’t do anything, we just lie there and ignore God. So what hope is there for pussy cats like us? There is no hope but God. The rest of the passage tells us that God sent Jesus to come and pay the penalty for our sin, God sent His Spirit to fill our hearts and lives, that God made us alive so that now we want to be Jesus’ followers. So that now we know that Jesus is real and we hear Jesus speaks to us. The first step is to ask Jesus to make us alive. Have a great week.

… I love them with chips and with vegetables and gravy. I am joking. But there is a huge difference between the way cats treat people and dogs treat people. My dog is fiercely loyal. She follows me everywhere. I have a shower and she is draped over the bathroom door. I stand up and she is there under my feet. Wherever I go she goes with me. No matter how good or how bad I treat her she is there and she keeps coming back. My dog can sit on my lap for hours while I just pat it and rub her. As a matter of fact my wife rightly complains the dog gets more attention than she does. Cats on the other hand - they don’t really care about you. To them you are just their meal ticket. Even the way they walk with their tail up in the air reflects their attitude. Have you ever seen a cat try to be friendly? It doesn’t happen very often, normally it just looks up at you from down its nose as if to say ‘oh it’s you - go get me food’, and then it goes back to ignoring you. On those rare occasions it tries to be friendly here how it goes. The cat starts to weave in and out of your feet, and you go ‘ooh it likes me’ so you bend over to pat it and it either runs away or hisses at you. If it’s a real tease it might let you pat it for a bit until you are lulled into a false sense of security, and you think, this cat is not like the rest, it’s a nice friendly cat. So you pick it up - and you know what happens next. Claws and fur fly everywhere. There are two rules when it comes to cats. Rule one - cats are not your friend. The second rule is that even if your cat seems friendly, rule one still applies.

November is clean up month!

“Quick the visitors are coming!” “Moving out” “Moving in” “Let’s get rid of the school gear” If you’re moving we have cardboard boxes for packing and if you have just arrived don’t forget to drop off your removalist boxes at the centre for recycling. If you need more plates, glasses, cup, chairs, tables etc to accommodate the visitors call into the markets at the resource recovery centre Roberts Road, Saturdays only 9.00am - 4.00pm. Styrofoam boxes will come in handy for those extra items you need to be kept cold, $2.00 each with a lid. At the centre we are decorating recycled Christmas trees with items out of the market. We have a Christmas tree decorated with jewellery, another is decorated with coloured cord or coloured shoe laces and another tree has special items that remind you of someone special in your family like Nanas special tea cup, a grandsons small toy, salt and pepper shakers mum bought on holidays, the list can go on and on. If you are a local business and would like to have one of our recycled Christmas trees to display in your business to help get into the Christmas spirit just call into the centre on Roberts Road or give us a call on 5494 6798. How are your Christmas lights display going? Have you thought of cutting the bottoms off soft drink and milk bottles, painting them different colours putting a candle in them and placing them around the garden, they look great! What about putting a strip of coloured cellophane inside the solar garden light to add extra colour to your displays? Don’t forget to register your Christmas light display with Glasshouse Country News; you don’t have to go into the competition. Canine Obesity

One of the biggest growing health problems seen in dogs today is obesity. Like us, dogs that are overweight are at high risk to a variety of diseases, disorders and other complications. Below are some conditions that are associated with obesity: • Cardiac disease • Pancreatitis • Diabetes • Hypertension (high blood pressure) • Orthopaedic injuries (such as cruciate ligament rupture) • Osteoarthritis • Respiratory disorders • Various forms of cancer It is important to continually assess your dog’s weight and condition. Here are some pointers to help with an assessment: 1. Run your hands along your dog's ribcage, you should be able to palpate the ribs covered by a thin layer of fat. If you cannot feel the ribs this is an indication that your dog may be overweight. 2. View your dog from the side; you should be able to see the upward tuck of the abdomen. An overweight dog will have very little or no tuck.

with Graeme Lean 3. Viewing your dog from above, there should be a moderate narrowing at the waist just past the ribcage. A straight or bulging line from the ribcage to the hips indicates an overweight dog.

Feeding and managing your dog's weight

Randomly feeding table scraps and human junk food is unhealthy for your dog. Whilst left over veggies are great, you need to weigh / measure the food you give your dog. Don’t be fooled by fancy packaging…even healthy food treats will lead to weight gain if given in excess. Allowing your dog to ‘free feed’ by leaving a full bowl out is a bad idea. Your vet can help you choose the right food and weight loss program for your dog. Monitor your dog’s weight by weighing him / her regularly. Most vet clinics have a scale that they are happy for you to use free of charge. Our vet clinics in Beerwah, Landsborough and Glasshouse Mountains all have scales that we are happy for you to use. Household electronics tops National Recycling Week hit list Planet Ark is targeting household batteries, printer cartridges and mobile phones this National Recycling Week (November 8 -14) after receiving a surge in the number of enquiries from people who don’t know what to do with the compact electronic items. The environmental organisation receives more than 800 recycling enquiries a day related to household batteries, printer cartridges and mobile phones. “Most people know to put their empty aluminium cans in the kerbside recycling bin, but when it comes to electronic waste we’re less likely to get it right,” says Planet Ark’s Manager of Recycling Programs, Janet Sparrow. “With collection points at Australia Post and Officeworks outlets, ‘Cartridges 4 Planet Ark’ and ‘MobileMuster’ make it easy to recycle used printer cartridges and mobile phones.” “Battery recycling options are different for each council area so it’s best to check Planet Ark’s RecyclingNearYou.com.au for information on local recycling options,” says Sparrow. For further information about recycling or any of Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week initiatives, visit RecyclingWeek.PlanetArk.org or call the National Recycling Hotline on 1300 733 712.

Beerwah Bulldogs Club Update

Sports news

Following our recent Annual General Meeting on held Sunday, October 17, the club is pleased to announce the following committee for season 2011, President – Dean Roberts, Senior Vice President – Stephen Pitt, Junior Vice President – David Boss, Secretary – Dee Pitt, Treasurer – Debbie Roberts. After a series of meetings recently which was confirmed at the AGM, it has been decided the Senior Club would be wound up and the Beerwah & District Junior Rugby League Club run both the Junior and Senior teams into the future. This decision has made us make a few slight changes to the Club’s Constitution which will be discussed at the upcoming monthly meeting on November 10 at the Clubhouse. The Club will trade from this point on as the Beerwah Bulldogs RLFC. The Bulldogs in the past had struggled to run as two separate clubs and I believe the new structure would make it a more streamlined operation and help consolidate the clubs long term future. A big part of our vision for the future is to have the whole club working together and also having a Strict Code of Conduct from the Under 7’s right through to the Open Grades. The club has some exciting new initiatives which will be put in place for the upcoming season and will be published in the local media to keep everyone updated. Anyone wanting to become involved in the club either in the way of playing, volunteering or sponsorship are encouraged to contact President Dean Roberts on 0418 816 605 to discuss.

The Queensland Blind Cricket Association were victorious once again when they defeated a gallant Lions Club of Beerwah team by 76 runs. On a beautiful Glasshouse Mountains day, Beerwah Lions batted first and managed 108 runs. Top scorers were Dan 19, Justin 11 retired. Everyone else got a start but failed to reach double figures – sundries enhanced our total by 33 runs. The blind cricketers proved too tough for the Beerwah Lions After a scrumptious lunch provided by the Lion’s Ladies, the blind cricketers batted - they belted the plastic ball returned from a tour of the West Indies, with the with ball bearings inside to all parts of the Queensland Team. Sunshine Coast Kennel Club November Show End of an era – new beginnings This year marks 41 years since the first meeting of a dog club on the Sunshine Coast which today is called the Sunshine Coast Kennel Club, and since 1982 the club has had a permanent show venue at the Beerwah Sportsground. That’s 28 years in the same location. Our next show on Friday, November 19, commencing at 6.30pm will be our last at Beerwah Sportsground. In 2011 we will be moving to Skippy Park if all goes to plan. There will be many, many good memories of our years at the sportsground but we now look forward to new beginnings at the new grounds and hope you will all still come along to enjoy our shows. This coming show will have seven rings operating simultaneously with an entry of about

700 dogs covering up to 120 different breeds. Many of these will be the regular favourites but there will also be many unusual and rare breeds shown as well. Judging is alphabetical by breed so Afghan Hounds will be on early while Welsh Corgis may not be in the ring until later in the evening. We do encourage any and all to come along and enjoy our show. Exhibitors are more than willing to chat about their breeds and the showing is quite spectacular and interesting to watch. There will be ‘doggy product’ stalls and other stalls of interest. Catering is provided and also a Coffee Van and iIce-creams. Contact David on 5494 7496 for more details.

Three cheers for the Beerwah crocs!

They may only be a young team, but the future looks bright if the success of Beerwah State High’s cheerleading team, ‘The Beerwah Crocs’, in their first year of competition is anything to go by. The Beerwah Crocs have been a squad for three years, but this is the first year they have competed. In their first ever competition, held at the Logan Metro World Cup Cheer Queensland State Championships, they placed third. They placed second in the Australia All Star Cheer and Dance State Championships, and were finalists in the World Cup Cheer Asia Pacific Grand Final. They were also invited to compete in the nationals in Melbourne next month. The squad, which competes at a Level 2 Co-Ed Division consists of 18 students from various year levels, but the majority are in Years 8 and 9. The squad is open to females and males, and the cheerleading is based on the ‘Bring It On’ style from the movie of the same name. Routines consist of dance components, jump

components , gymnastic elements, multilevel pyramid and stunt elements such as tosses. Year 9 student Kristanna Sutton is the captain of the squad. “It’s lots of fun; I enjoy dance and gymnastics, so it’s a really good combination. I enjoy most the dance element and watching our performances (on video) to learn from it. My favourite move is probably a basket toss,” she said. Lara Thomas, also from Year 9, said she started because everyone else was doing it, and she thought she would give it a try. “It looked interesting, and I enjoy trying new and different moves that we come up with. When competing there’s all the adrenaline, you can’t wait to do it again. Doing cheerleading is nothing like I thought it was going to be, it’s much better.” Teachers Brad Johnson and Kerrie Jones jointly coach the squad with Kerrie lending her expertise to the choreography, and Brad the stunt coaching. Brad, who was a level seven gymnast, said the most important skills the cheerleaders need are the determination and the drive to be part of a squad. “They have trained hard two days a week since beginning of the year. They’re really dedicated,” he said. And it appears coaches have just as much fun as the cheerleaders. “Just watching the competitions and seeing the atmosphere in the hall, it’s amazing. Just seeing a heap of kids having a great time with massive smiles on their faces, having a ball, it’s great to be part of that.”
