Hi everyone
I have to say that I am now on my final countdown for the year and I am really looking forward to popping the ‘closed’ sign on the door and taking some well deserved time off. As usual, the GCNews team are taking three week’s leave from next week – we have made one major change to production, and that is the last paper for the year will be a Tuesday edition instead of a Wednesday edition date. We wanted to give our advertisers the very latest opportunity to promote what they have on sale for Christmas so with papers being delivered earlier in the week, it will still give shoppers plenty of time to purchase those last minute Christmas requirements. This also means that if you have anything at all to go into the paper this week – we will need stories, letters and editorial contributions it
by 12.00noon on Thursday, Sports contributions by 10.30am on Friday and Classifieds by 10.00am on Friday. As most of us still have crazy to-do lists that we still have to get through, just make sure you prioritise anything for us to avoid the disappointment of missing out. The GCNews office will re-open on Tuesday, January 11 and our first edition will be Wednesday, January 19. So if you capture any great photos during the time our staff are lazing around on beaches or beside swimming pools or just relaxing with a good book – please send them through to our email editorial@ gcnews.com.au as we will be pleased to report what went on during the Glasshouse Country Festive Season on our return. Regards,
This week in gcnews 6

Kerbside clean up given the flick Residents will have to find alternative means to discard unwanted items after Council announced last week it won't be continuing the popular kerbside cleanup service, deciding $900,000 was too much to pay for a service only used by 20 per cent of residents.
It's an opportunity that sounds too good to be true for Trish Cashin of Community Recycling Inc, which operates the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre. She said the announcement was positive news for residents. “Many residents might not be aware that it doesn’t cost anything to dispose of recyclable items at the recovery centre,” Ms Cashin said. “It’s a win-win situation – residents can dispose of unwanted goods for free, and be assured it will have another life, rather than face the elements on the kerbside, and end up no good for anything.” Ms Cashin said only putricibles – those items of waste which should normally be disposed of as part of normal household waste, along with mattresses, incur a fee for dumping at the recovery centre. “Almost anything can be recycled, as long as you are mindful of sorting your waste at home, the system (of waste disposal and recycling) can work efficiently for everyone, especially in those instances where you want to dispose of items you no longer want or need.”
ANZ Beerwah. By Kylie Wyer
Council intends to liaise with small private operators and community groups to establish an alternative to the kerbside collection. Environment Portfolio Holder Councillor Keryn Jones said council had a responsibility to spend ratepayer dollars on services beneficial to all residents. Currently, every resident pays $6.00 annually for the service, regardless of whether they use it or not. She said residents can recycle many items for free at council recovery stations and recycle markets. “Recycle Markets are community-run and accept items that can be re-sold at low cost such as children’s play equipment, garden tools, furniture, working TV’s, ceramics, furniture, DIY materials and re-usable building materials. “Another thing to remember is that a lot of things picked up at the kerbside clean ups can be disposed of for free at any time, things like microwaves, computers, de-gassed fridges and car bodies,” Cr Jones said. Residents can dispose car exhausts, steel, metal, clothing and clean rags, computers, electrical equipment, working or not, engine oil (in domestic quantities), paint and hazardous chemicals (domestic quantities only) and all things that are accepted in the yellow lidded recycling bin for free at the Resource Recovery Centre. See page 7 for how Community Recycling Inc is spreading Christmas cheer right across the hinterland.

Pondering our transport options In last week’s GCNews, we raised the issue of the lack of dedicated cycle lanes throughout the hinterland. Another hot topic has been the state of rail services between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.
Sunshine Coast commuters took the opportunity to raise concerns regarding the revised rail timetable last weekend when newly appointed LNP Shadow Minister for Public Transport Tracy Davis joined Member for Glass House Andrew Powell at a community consultation forum in Nambour. Mr Powell, who has the majority of Sunshine Coast railway stations in his electorate, has sponsored an epetition and a paper petition to preserve the current timetable. He said there were a limited number of services running north of Caboolture, which should be as convenient as possible for local commuters. “If it is too hard for commuters to catch the earlier or later trains, people will elect to drive to Brisbane instead,” he said. The epetition can be signed at http://ow.ly/3j97k This week, we asked local residents what they thought about both the state of our rail services, and the lack of dedicated cycling lanes across the hinterland.
1 Andrew Kemp, Glass House Mountains. “A modernisation of Queensland Rail, out of the 1950’s and into the 21st Century would be fantastic. And along with the modernisation, that it actually runs on time. They’ve redone all the timing schedules for the trains and from Brisbane up to here the normal one is 5.16pm and now
they’re going to make it 5.03pm. For those who work in offices, that’s three minutes to get out; but then given Qld Rail efficiency the 5.03pm will probably turn up at 5.16pm anyway. If they spend less money paying for revenue protection officers wandering up and down the carriages and actually use that money on making the system more efficient they would find people are probably happier to pay the fares.”
2 Frank Perry, Glass House Mountains. “I use the rail to Brisbane probably three times a year. I get a bit cheesed off having to change trains at Caboolture. From what I’ve seen of it, it seems to be pretty reasonable. Perhaps they should be putting more Brisbane services on for daily commuters. People who use them trying to get to and from work probably aren’t as well served as they should be. It sends us the message that the government is doing things at their leisure, not for the convenience of the public.” 3 Jack Johnson, Beerwah. “Things are pretty poor transport wise. We were going to be upgraded but that’s all been shelved, it’s a pretty poor state of affairs now. I’m an occasional railway user. I think it makes people, if they have to travel to the city, think twice about settling here.” 4 Anita Ulrick, Glass House Mountains. “My children are train users and I find that the timetables are always a bit out. They need to update their timetables and get their services worked out. And it would be good to see more bike lanes around the place. It shows just how slack the government is really, it doesn’t matter who’s in charge they are all as slack as one another.”

5 Brian Aitken, Beerwah. “On my trip to China, (I saw) mostly all the infrastructure is done, it’s completed before they start building houses. I noticed in China all the railways are high railways, up in the air like freeways, and even the stations are there, all built, before anything moves in. Australia has a lot to learn from China. We’ve been talking about the railway system to Caloundra for years, even before Joh Bjelke-Petersen was in, and it’s never eventuated.”
6 Audrey Readman, Glass House Mountains. “I’m not a frequent railway user but I feel it should be upgraded. To catch a train you can’t just go anywhere, so they should have trains that can go pretty much everywhere, like Maroochydore. There’s just not enough transport for people who don’t have cars.”
7 Dennis Day, Beerburrum. “I’m not a frequent train user, but I used to be. I don’t think we have a good system for commuters at the moment, it’s always too packed. I used to catch the 4.00pm from Roma Street and always finished up giving a lady my seat. I go for a bike ride in the mornings. I would like to 3 see more bike lanes.”

Safety for cyclists We've put the safety of cyclists under the spotlight, with some useful tips for motorists who share the road with the our two-wheeled friends. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said in lieu of a lack of dedicated cycle lanes in the hinterland, it comes back to motorists exercising care and caution, and most importantly, patience. “Cyclists don’t have the benefit of a chassis to protect them, so motorists should use extra care when sharing the road with them,” Mr Powell said. Bicycles have the same rights and responsibilities on the road as other road users, and motorists can make it easier and safer for cyclists to ride on the road if they follow these tips. • Make room when you overtake a cyclist - at least one metre or a whole lane if you’re travelling over 60 (km/h). • Check for cyclists - check blind spots for cyclists before changing course, turning or opening your car door. • Give way when required - treat cyclists like any other vehicle, give way when required and travel at a safe following distance. • Be patient - wait until it’s safe before overtaking a cyclist. • Take extra care at night and in the wet - watch out for cyclists at night, dawn or dusk. Be considerate and dip your headlights when approaching a cyclist. • Look out for kids on bikes - especially around schools and places where children might be riding bikes. Many crashes between bikes and cars involve children. Young cyclists are not always predictable and can lack road sense. • Be fair - cyclists are legitimate road users – treat them with respect and courtesy. Most adult cyclists also own a car and pay registration. By choosing to ride instead of drive, cyclists are benefiting everyone by reducing traffic congestion, pollution and road wear. For more information on safe cycling, visit the Department of Transport and Main Roads website at http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Driverguide/Driving-safely/Sharing-the-road-with-cyclists.aspx

Glenview Road safety concerns highlighted
On December 3, divisional councillor Jenny McKay attended an on-site meeting with a council officer to address serious concerns raised by residents along a section of Glenview Road about the need for an immediate upgrade of the road to provide safety for the residents, their property and vehicular traffic in the area. Residents raised concerns regarding the corner east of 457 Glenview Road which had been the scene of three separate vehicle incidents within a 24 hour period. A damaged section of fence on the southern side of the bend had only just finished being rebuilt after a vehicle went through it six weeks ago. Cr McKay said increased signage density, including some form of ‘High Crash Zone’ signage needed to be implemented along with a crash barrier around the corner to prevent stray vehicles from striking the adjacent fence and or
Local residents Paul Hume, Shell McCormack and Mrs York with Cr McKay, second from right pedestrians, and possibly an asphalt corrector. “Given the frequency of the incidents that have occurred at this location, safety measures should be able to be installed at this location within the next two weeks (some temporary type barriers as a minimum until a final design is in place), and I urge all road users to ensure they drive carefully,” Cr McKay said. Glenview Road is currently undergoing a redesign to improve vehicle safety along the entire length of the road, including a footpath to improve pedestrian safety.
Planning study to look at highway upgrade at Sippy Downs, a western service road to connect the interchange to Frizzo Road at the Ettamogah Pub, the Caloundra Road / Bruce Highway interchange and a western service road to connect the interchange to Frizzo Road at the Ettamogah Pub and upgrading the Bruce Highway from four lanes to six lanes between the Caloundra Road and Sunshine Motorway interchanges. It will also address the Bruce Highway northbound entry ramp at the Ettamogah Pub, the Sippy Creek and Wilson Road intersections and the Sunshine Motorway exit ramp.
A planning study has commenced to investigate future upgrades between the Caloundra and Sippy Downs interchanges on the Bruce Highway. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, said he had been working with the community to lobby the government at both levels to ensure a commitment for funding to make these much needed upgrades. He said there had been a fair amount of buck passing, with Main Roads advising the project fell under the Federal Government’s jurisdiction, however he was pleased by the news to date. The current planning will develop a business case for the staged delivery of the upgrade works to the Sunshine Motorway / Bruce Highway interchange
The study is expected to be completed by late 2011, with funding for any proposed works dependant on the Federal Government.

Community Recycling Inc spreads Christmas spirit One of our most generous and hardworking community supporters, Community Recycling Inc, which operates the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre, has proven that the spirit of Christmas knows no boundaries, having made a generous donation of time and resources for a new playground at the neighbouring community of Witta. Recently, a group of Witta residents made an appeal for assistance after plans were announced to remove their local park at the Witta Sportsground, to make way for a new tennis court. Community Recycling Inc, which also operates the Witta Resource Recovery Centre, came to the rescue, donating the funds for fencing the new playground, as well as some new, recycled furniture. The brand new playground, which also received funding support from Council and other local businesses, who donated turf, trees and landscaping, was officially opened last month.

Christmas helpers These Beerwah State High Year 8 students are members of the school Interact Club. They are delivering their Adopt-a-Family Christmas hampers to St Vincent de Pauls at Landsborough. The students have spent the last two weeks preparing these with the help of donations from other students and teachers who all gave very generously to the project. After a small shopping trip they were able to complete the task and on Friday, December 3, all was ready to deliver. Congratulations to these very willing young girls who wish a joyous Christmas for the recipients of their work.

At Beerwah Primary School on Friday, December 3, we had the pleasure of inviting the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troop to our school. Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troop is a group of indigenous artists and performers. The indigenous students in the school invited one of their classmates to join them at the special workshop. They were able to participate in a wide range of cultural experiences such as body painting, dance moves, animal calls and of course a didgeridoo lesson. This was a fantastic learning experience for the students and a good time was had by all.

Presentation pizzazz! Glasshouse Country Christian College celebrated the end of year with evening presentations to families and friends with colourful and entertaining items from each class from Prep through to Year 6. The younger grades showcased aspects of countries around the world as the ‘smallest angel’ sought a place for the birth of Jesus. The songs and dances and fantastic costumes reflected something of each country’s culture and included a country from each continent. The older students from Years 4 to 6 used ‘Storybook’ as their theme and included songs, dances and poems. This involved acting the story of Max Lucado’s ‘You Are Special’, singing our Australian favourite ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and dancing to ‘Singing in the Rain’.

Have a light Christmas With Annette Sym Christmas means a busy time for the cooks who prefer to home bake puddings, pies and treats. If you want to home bake some goodies for December 25, then I have a few suggestions that I would like to offer you. Firstly, when baking, use low fat margarine as this cuts the fat down by nearly half. I find when making fruit cakes that you don’t need to add sugar to the mix as the dried fruits gives lots of sweetness so this means you are reducing the carbohydrates and for people with diabetes, this is ideal. Here are some more tips that may help you make this Christmas a ‘light’ one for all to enjoy: 1. Offer low fat dips with loads of crudités such as sliced carrot, celery, continental cucumber and mushrooms. I always make my Mexican Dip (Book Three) not only because everyone loves it, but it has the colours of Christmas with the green shallots and capsicum, red tomatoes and the white yoghurt. Serve with low fat corn chips (Freedom), rice crackers or low fat Jatz. 2. Have a seasonal fruit platter. To keep cool and fresh use two trays that are the same size and put ice bricks between the two platters. 3. Don’t buy large bags of Christmas treats. Have enough to do one platter of Christmas treats such as licorice allsorts, cashews and lollies so when they are gone, they are gone. This way your guests will then turn to the fruit and low fat options such as the dips. 4. If you’re doing a hot lunch, then dry bake the roasts. Cut as much fat off the meat before serving and make my low fat baked vegetables (Book One). I also make Gravox low jouled gravy
as it is easy and tastes great and use skim milk and low fat cheese when making a white sauce for the cauliflower. 5. If making salads, use low fat mayo’s and no fat dressings or make some of my many varied salads in my six cookbooks. My favourite choices for Christmas Day is always the Deluxe potato salad, Asian Salad and a garden salad. 6. If you haven’t made my Tropical Christmas Cake (Book Two), then you are really missing out. At less than two grams of fat a serve, it is ideal for anyone who wants to watch the calories and still enjoy the traditional food that we love to have on December 25. Annette’s bestselling cookbooks SYMPLY TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE 1-6 and other exciting products are sold in all good newsagencies, Borders bookstores or visit Annette’s website www.symplytoogood.com.au

Ensure healthy lifestyle doesn’t take a break this festive season
The silly season presents a challenge for many people to eat healthily and maintain an active lifestyle, and according to Queensland Health, to avoid guilt and fad dieting once the party is over, it is a good idea to maintain physical activity and avoid overindulgence. Queensland Health Nutrition and Physical Activity Director, Dr Amanda Lee said it wasn’t necessary to follow a strict diet or give up our favourite Christmas desert or portion of stuffed turkey. “The message is to enjoy special treats, but don’t go overboard with excessive consumption of saturated fats, salt or alcohol.” Here's some tips for a healthy lifestyle during the festive season: Go for a walk or enjoy other kinds of physical activity to help burn off those extra kilojoules consumed. Avoid regular overeating. Most of the reason for weight gain over Christmas is due to over indulging and eating more food than we require. Add salads, vegetables and fresh fruit to your festive spreads. Summer is a great time for fresh fruits and vegetables which make the ideal compliment to heavy, fatty or starchy foods. Drink plenty of plain Great tractors with water, particularly options during hot summer days. for all situations Dehydration is linked to diminished physical 23 - 100HP and mental well being. Keeping well hydrated with water is particularly important when drinking alcohol. Adequate consumption Great Tractors - Great Deals of fruit and vegetables Good people to do business with is vitally important for children and adults to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease www.glasshousetractors.com and a range of cancers.

Gift to the nation – The Australian Women’s Weekly goes online
Early editions of the nation’s favourite magazine, The Australian Women’s Weekly, are now available online as the National Library of Australia’s Christmas gift to the nation. Issues of the iconic magazine, from the first publication on June 10,1933, to when it changed to a monthly on December 15, 1982, are now online at trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper for everyone to read now and into the future. The project was undertaken with the assistance of the State Library of NSW and in conjunction with the magazine’s publisher, ACP Magazines. Acting Director-General of the National Library Warwick Cathro said for more than 75 years, The Australian Women’s Weekly has told Australia’s stories, from royals to our first female prime minister, from war to fashion, through words and photographs. ‘The National Library is proud to lead the way by combining cutting-edge digitisation technology with such an icon of Australian publishing history in order to make this gift to the nation possible,’ Dr Cathro said. He said a ‘search and rescue’ campaign, conducted by the National Library, in which the public was invited to donate ‘missing’ copies of the magazine to the Library’s collection, had proved a great success–and had made completing the digitisation project possible. Former Editor-In-Chief and now General Manager, Media, Public Affairs and Brand Development at ACP Magazines, Deborah Thomas, said not only would long-time fans of the magazine now be able to access early editions online, she hoped the project would also attract a new generation of readers keen to see how the magazine chronicled key events in our history. The digitisation of The Australian Women’s Weekly coincides with the first birthday of the Library’s free discovery service Trove trove.nla.gov.au/ where digitised copies can be accessed.

Real Ezy Finance with First National Beerwah
Five minutes with …… No longer do you have to worry about getting finance when buying property in Beerwah, especially when you buy from First National Beerwah. Real Ezy Estate Finance has teamed up with First National Beerwah to provide an unrivalled and hassle free finance experience, which will not only save you time, but with over 35 lenders to choose from, will also save you money.
First National Beerwah team members Directors of Real Ezy Estate Finance, Luke Mooney and Adam Sellars believe that this alliance has already seen great results for all parties. Most notably with potential buyers who often see one financial institution and when their situation does not suit that lender they often become deflated and resign themselves to staying in the rental cycle. However with so many options at Real Ezy Estate Finance’s disposal, they have been able to get these potential buyers into their very own homes. An example of this was Toni and Neil Browning, proud new owners of Real Estate in Glass House Mountains who said this about their experience: “We had been told by some of the major lenders that we were unable to get a home loan, but after meeting one of First Nationals finance guys at an open home we were given hope and now here we are in our very own home and it feels great.” If you are looking for finance, pop in and See Adam or Luke at First National Beerwah, 68 Simpson Street, Beerwah or call on 5494 6444 or email info@realezyestatefinance.com.au

Get outside into your garden Summer is all about fun in the sun, and January is a real chill out month recovering from over indulging in the silly season. During these hot months it is critical to keep your plants well watered. Mulch can really help retain moisture, so if your garden is well mulched you will get away with watering less, saving your valuable water, time and money. It is also important at this time to keep your gardens well fertilized, at least monthly. When you mow during the summer months it is a good idea to raise the blades a little higher than normal as longer grass helps protect the root system. With the kids on holidays, January is also a great time to get the kids outside (off the Wii
or Playstation) and getting involved with your outdoor projects. By starting a vegetable garden and giving them ownership, they get to see the benefits of their hard work. Getting kids to eat their vegetables is made easier when they have grown it themselves. You also don’t need a lot of space for a veggie garden, you can use any type of pots, planter boxes or garden tanks. The kids will get so much enjoyment watering and waiting to pick and eat that first strawberry or carrot. Remember veggie gardens will need a lot of watering, at least once a day. The benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables are obvious, the hours of fun that you will have with your family is priceless.

Members enjoyed the final meeting for the year in the lovely rural retreat of Roy and Lorna Whittle. Graham Leach introduced our guest speaker, Kath Stumer, Garden Clubs Ambassador for 2010 and a member of the Karana Downs Garden Club. Her main topic was growing bougainvilleas in pots, varieties that are suitable for pots and how to care for them. She also demonstrated pruning plants after flowering. Photos of flowering potted bougainvilleas and Kath’s beautiful garden were passed around. She also spoke about her year of being ambassador, meeting plenty of other keen gardeners and lots of travelling. Coral Beutel then presented Kath with a fruit basket. Results of the competition bench for October - first Cath Howitt, second Joan Kropp. Coral Beutel mentioned that her daughter used air freshener to spray slugs and killed them all! Members enjoyed our Christmas lunch break-up recently at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Graham Leach entertained us with a few tall stories and guest speakers, The Twinnies, Brigette and Paula Powers, accompanied by their sister Michelle spoke about their work rehabilitating injured and sick seabirds. A collection was taken up and presented to the Twinnies to continue their good work. Next meeting will be held in the garden of Nessie Pratten on Thursday, January 20, at 9.30am. Flower of the month, Dahlia. Visitors welcome. For more information phone 5496 9169.

The December meeting of Beerwah NHWQ was held at the Baptist Church Hall on December 6. It was preceded by a light meal, after which the ‘Good Neighbour of the Year Award’ certificate and shield (which is sponsored by Glasshouse Country News) were presented by Councillor Anna Grosskreutz to Joy and Rob Haese. Rob and Joy were nominated by Suzanne Hoey, the Director of Care at Eden in Glasshouse Country, for their volunteer work at Eden over the past four years. They help in many areas, including bus driving, special events and gardening. They were also instrumental in setting up Friends of Eden Inc. The recipients of the annual award were chosen from the five winners of ‘Good Neighbour Awards’ during 2010. Rob and Joy won the June ‘Good Neighbour Award’.

We met a few weeks ago with State Member for Caloundra. Mark McArdle, to bring to the state government’s notice, the parking issues at the Landsborough railway station. The government’s response has shown that once again they are overlooking this area in preference to others. The rail duplication from Beerburrum to Landsborough has been shelved indefinitely, though maps showing the upgrade were on display at the opening of the renovated railway station, showing the upgrade from Caboolture to Landsborough. No explanation as to why the upgrade was halted at Beerburrum has ever been received from the State Government. We are happy to see Andrew Powell taking up this issue and wish him luck! Members recently attended the meeting at Sunshine Coast University in relation to the Caloundra South development. We, like other organisations, are horrified at the stand the state government has taken in relation to this development. Have your say about Caloundra South, the rail upgrade, the parking problems or any other topic you feel strongly about. Go to www. landsborough.qld.au go to the Landsborough Community Association page and then the link to the forum. You’ll have to create a user name the first time you access the forum but after the initial time, all you’ll need to do is log in. On a happy note, last night I attended the Landsborough State School Year 7 graduations to present the Margaret Armstrong Bursary for Academic Effort. It was a really lovely graduation night and I congratulate the students and staff for making it so. The winner of the bursary was Zarah Brown. We congratulate Zarah and we wish the graduating students the very best for the future. Our last meeting was a special meeting to vote on two changes to the constitution. These changes are: 1. To change the date for the end of the financial year from March 31 to June 30 each year and 2. To change the date of the AGM from within three months of the financial end of year, to six months. Our next general meeting will be on February 14. We wish all members and their families a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.
Morris House Neighbourhood Centre News Contributed by Ann Husband, coordinator It’s nearly the end of another year and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to a well earned break. Morris House’s last day for the year will be Friday, December 17. We will open each Wednesday from 10.00am - 11.00am for those who need bread, food etc. We will re-open on January 17. Our usual services are available until we close for Christmas. It has been a busy year and we have assisted a lot of people with food, bread, other emergency help and referral and of course, internet and computer use. We attended a meeting recently with other groups who provide emergency relief with the view of finding exactly what is available in the area and which organisations provide what, so we can make sure clients are given maximum help when in need. Next year we hope to re-vamp our computer classes and provide a wider range of short courses to help those starting out with computers, the internet and e-mail. So keep a look out for news items from us in the new year. Information will also be posted on the web site so go to www. landsborough.qld.au and go to the Morris House page then to the courses link. Spanish lessons are currently being organised at the CWA hall. If you are interested in learning Spanish, call us for details and booking information. Our contact details are: Phone 5494 1255; fax; 5494 1797; e-mailmorrishouse@landsborough.com I would like to sincerely thank all our volunteers who have staffed the centre during the year and who have given up their time to assist others. Thanks to Jack for doing the reflexology which funds our emergency relief, Ross for doing a great job with tax help, Bernd for keeping our computer equipment operational free of charge, and the cooking group who cook each week for our clients. We wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. Drive safely wherever you go. Until next year, take care.
A new way in aged care How do you describe a whole new way in aged care when there’s simply nothing else like it? Seasons is more than just an incredibly exciting new way in aged care. It is a new industry benchmark a direct and dedicated response to growing public dissatisfaction with existing options in aged care in this country. Seasons' communities across Queensland are rapidly redefining Australia’s expectations of aged care. Two things Seasons is definitely not - we are not a retirement village, nor are we anything like a traditional nursing home. Developed by a team of Australia’s most innovative aged care experts, Seasons combines the independence and privacy of home ownership with state-of-the-art facilities and unprecedented levels of round-the-clock nursing care. Seasons Caloundra is our latest community to open. At Seasons, residents enjoy the privacy and independence of their own beautiful self-contained
THE ADVANTAGES OF LIVING AT SEASONS 2 All care received in the privacy of your own Seasons home 3 Fully self-contained home including all kitchen and laundry appliances 4 No waiting list – move in right away 5 No asset testing or income testing 6 Pets are welcome

Residents are especially encouraged to enjoy all the freedoms that are possible for them. At the hub of Seasons life is a thriving community and lifestyle centre, shared by residents and extended family alike. Equally popular is the community dining room which serves fresh, nourishing food whenever residents don’t feel like cooking in their own home. Couples can stay together at Seasons, even when one’s health needs change. And residents are welcome to bring their pets to live at Seasons as well. Ratepayers should be impressed with Council
Some months ago Council cut down a mature and stately gum tree at the intersection of Mt Mellum and Agnew Roads. It was not dead but did have some white ant infestation. It seems some nearby ratepayer convinced Council that this tree was a danger to children who might play under it even though they would need to cross a deep earth gutter to even reach it. No one has ever seen children playing on the road way under the tree. Some neighbour gained a better sea view by its removal. Some months later, four mature gum trees on the other side of the same intersection opposite the offending tree, all started dying at the same time. That was a puzzle for the neighbourhood. About two months after the last dead leaf fell from these trees, a cherry-picker, workmen with chain-saws and of course the necessary mulcher arrived. Areas of the road were sign posted with warnings and witches hats and work started and carried on for half a day to cut down those four recently dead trees. No doubt it was because of the worry that children might suddenly want to climb the bank off the road to play under them. All of this has happened within a short time and Council has been amazingly vigilant to protect the children. Some neighbours now have gained greatly enhanced and uninterrupted sea views. The rest of us in the neighbourhood are suspicious and wait with expectation to see what this was all about. Name withheld Landsborough
I would like to comment on Kurt Jensen’s letter (GCNews December 1). I agree with him as to the roundabout. This would have solved many problems but now we have sets of lights that do nothing to improve the situation at all. Speed limits are just a joke. The Caloundra road goes from 100 to 80 and the excuse is that the 80 part is there because there is no barrier. Major roads have 100km and a white line. I will never believe that speeding tickets are for the safety of the people. This is the easiest way of revenue making. Speeding does contribute to the accident but it is not the major cause. Jeff Price wrote about train time tables and fares. I travelled to Caboolture on a trip and the only person to swipe their card was one other person than myself who had a ticket. The train was full of school children and other commuters but not one had a ticket. This is where our money is being lost. Peter Foley Mooloolah Valley
Dog attack heroes
On Sunday morning, December 5, I was sitting outside Woolworths at Beerwah with my two dogs, Arnie and Narchos who were both on their leads. A large bull terrier type dog suddenly appeared and attacked my dogs, knocking me off my feet. Before I realised, it had Arnie in its mouth. I tried to grab the dog, but not being so young anymore, it was too strong for me. Two men then came to my assistance, grabbing hold of the aggressive dog as I tried to get poor Arnie out of his mouth. Luckily, I could prise the jaws open enough to release Arnie, badly hurt but still alive. I suffer from angina and at this point I blacked out and can’t remember too much about the rest of the morning. I’d just like to thank the two men who came to Arnie’s rescue, and the woman who helped me until the ambulance came. I’d like to get in touch with you all to thank you personally, but have lost the phone numbers you gave on the day. If it was you, can you please ring me on 5494 6818. Terry Drayson Beerwah
LANDSBOROUGH AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY Inc
A couple of weeks ago the Museum was approached by ABC Coast FM to do an interview celebrating the anniversary of the ‘Barbed Wire’. Barbed wire was invented in 1867 but not perfected until 1873. It was made by Joseph F. Glidden and patented on November 24, 1874. There are over 530 patented barbed wires, approximately 2,000 variations and over 2,000 patented barbed wire tools. It was called the ‘Devil’s Rope’ by many religious groups in America because when cattle came into contact with it for the first time it was very painful. At our Museum we have 54 different types on display and a book called ‘The Bobbed Wire’ which shows all of the variations. The Museum will be closed over the Christmas break from Monday, December 20, reopening Wednesday, January 5. The Management and staff of the Museum wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Rain
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
It has been good to see the trees and plants greening up due to the rain, however the flooding around the region has not been helpful. The rain has sparked some interesting action also with our wildlife. One of my staff members has been inundated with frogs in his garden at home, which has been a welcome attraction for him and his children. The rain has again proved that Australia is a land of extremes: extended periods of drought and soaking heavy rains.
I can’t believe it is December already and the Christmas decorations are going up all over the place. My office is even covered in tinsel! I would like to formally wish residents of Glass House a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe start to 2011. My office will be closing from 12.00noon Wednesday, December 22 and re-opening on Monday, January 10. On behalf of myself and my staff, I wish you all the best for the holiday season.
Fisher Australia Day Awards Now is the time to nominate a local resident who works hard in a voluntary role for the community for the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards. The awards will be presented at a special function on Australia Day, January 26, 2011, which also marks the 11th annual holding of the awards. For nomination forms, collect one from my office at Buddina or phone 5444 4888 and speak to Richard. The deadline for nominations is Friday, December 17, and Australia Day will be here again before we know it.
China services exports The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that China has become Australia’s largest export services market in 2009-10, having recently overtaken the United States. The value of services exported to China reached $5.8 billion in 2009-10, which was up by 13.4 per cent on 2008-09 figures. The value of export services to the United States came in at just under $5.3 billion. The combined total of Australia’s goods and services exports to China increased by 17.8 per cent during 2009-10.

Speed signs Steve Irwin Way Since we managed to get Main Roads to drop the speed on Steve Irwin Way from Bowen Road to the Glass House Mountains Caravan Park, I have been in constant contact with them to erect 80km signs on the outgoing side of the post. I have just been informed that Main Roads attended to this late last week and there is now at least one 80km sign that alerts south bound traffic of the change in speed.
Update on Glass House Mountains National Landscape campaign You might have read that I recently took a delegation of Sunshine Coast tourism identities to a meeting with the Minister for Tourism. The meeting was very positive and the Minister committed to working with Tourism Queensland to see what could be done to secure a place on this prestigious list for the Glass House Mountains. I have also recently written to the National Landscape program again asking for a representative from the program to visit Glass House in an effort to progress our application to the next level. If I am successful in getting a date for this I will let you all know.

Festive season opening and closing times
Are you keen to give back to your community?
Christmas is again fast approaching. It is timely that I provide you with an update on the council opening hours over this period. Council offices will close early on Friday, December 24 at 2.00pm. Offices will be closed on all public holidays (Monday and Tuesday December 27 - 28, and Monday, January 3). Offices will remain open on Wednesday, 29, Thursday, 30 and Friday, December 31.
Tree Removal – Landsborough Two trees will soon be removed from the corner of Old Gympie road and Landsborough / Maleny Road, Landsborough. One tree is a Blackbutt, which is dead and the other is an Ironbark tree which has cankers throughout its canopy and is displaying significant sight of stress. Both trees are close to the edge of the road.
Reminder - free holiday buses This Christmas / New Year period, council is providing free public transport on the Sunshine Coast from December 26 to January 9. Council is continuing the initiative following last year’s highly successful Free Holiday Buses Program. This year, in addition to the Noosa services and the Maroochydore to Caloundra route 600, council is extending the program to include the entire Sunshine Coast region. This program will include; • All Translink Sunbus services • Council Flexilink services - including, Conondale to Witta to Maleny, Kenilworth to Mapleton, Mooloolah Valley to Glenview, Peachester to Beerwah • Glasshouse Country Coaches - Hinterland Connect and MalenyLandsborough-Beerwah services and Maleny-Landsborough-Beerwah services • Council Cabs. The program is proudly funded by your Public Transport Levy.
Operating in Maleny since 2008, the ‘Book a Brain’ initiative aims to give local community groups access to the knowledge and experience of community members (Brains) to assist them in the development of responses, services or events that will be of benefit to the wider community. Sunshine Coast Libraries has been successful in obtaining a $10,000 grant from the Commonwealth Government through the Golden Gurus program. We would like to expand the ‘Book a Brain’ initiative to other libraries across the region, to help community groups. If you are interested in finding out more, or volunteering your skills to assist others in our communities, please register your interest at: http://aus.evanced.info/sunshinecoast/lib/ eventsignup.asp?id=796&windowmode=1&noheader=1 This will be the first step in assessing where and when we begin establishing the ‘Book a Brain’ program across the Sunshine Coast in 2011.
Twenty per cent not enough to keep kerbside
Council resolved to discontinue its kerbside cleanup service. The service cost rate payers $900,000 and was only used by 20 per cent of residents. Council will now liaise with small private operators and community groups to establish an alternative service which will be user pays. Environmentally it was argued, that kerbside clean up wastes an awful lot of recyclable items as once they are put out on the nature strip, it only needs to rain for them to become useless. Residents can recycle many items for free at council recovery stations and recycle markets. These items include car exhausts, steel, metal, clothing and clean rags, computers, engine oil (in domestic quantities), paint and hazardous chemicals (domestic quantities only), all things that are accepted in the yellow lidded recycling bin. I fully understood what these services meant to residents in my division and argued strongly to retain the service, however this motion was lost and this will now be council’s policy.
Waste levy for unserviced properties
Although we didn’t have a win with kerbside cleanup, Councils report to levy all residents regardless of where they had a recycling bin or not was defeated. I am happy to report that residents that do not use the serviced will not have to pay a levy.

Putting Santa on a Budget
Merry Christmas to all our readers!
Deck the Halls
It’s the time of year when everyone thinks of family and friends, near and far. And what better way to do so than by sending off a Christmas card? These days it is so easy to send a personalised message but how often do we look at our collection of photos and find that the one we would like to use is just not quite right? The trick is to ‘be ready!’, so this year while the littlies are opening their pressies be sure to capture that special moment. This takes a little pre-planning but will pay off. A checklist to observe: 1. Is the camera ready, so you don’t miss that special moment? 2. Be sure you are so familiar with your camera that you can set it easily and do not need to experiment or refer to the manual. 3. Position yourself so you have a suitable background.
card by Chris Be sure to get down low so you are at the child’s eye level, and not looking down on him / her. Using a suitable program such as Publisher, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop or Elements, turn your photo into a card you are proud to send off to the rellies. Some Camera software even provides templates and ideas. Add a bit of clip art and it’s ready to go for next year. U3A Grafx Group meets at Beerwah Library each Thursday and will be providing tutoring in using Photoshop Elements in the coming months. Check out: www.snapfish.com.au

I’d like a laptop computer, DS Lite, the latest Xbox 360 with 250GB hard drive, built-in wireless and hands-free Kinect motion controller capabilities, a triple turret nerf gun, robotic dinosaur, books, iPod touch, etc. etc…’. Okay, the above example may be a little extreme but many parents will be nodding their heads with total understanding. If the list of presents your child would like on Christmas morning is getting out of control, then it’s time to put Santa on a budget. But how? Put simply, start young. Let children know there are limits to what can be put on their Christmas list. Asl them what one or two items they would like the most. With older children explain to them that even Santa has to budget these days. Every child loves to see their Christmas stocking overflowing with presents on Christmas morning, so don’t use a stocking that can double as a dooner cover, consider using smaller stockings instead. HEALTH FUND REBATES
Cancer Council Queensland has renewed its call for the Queensland Government to introduce uniform statewide bans on smoking in public places, following the release of research by the World Health Organisation (WHO) highlighting the dangers of second-hand smoke. The research confirmed that smokers are not only putting themselves at risk, but also risking the lives of 1.8 billion non-smokers. It is estimated that 51 per cent of children and more than 50 per cent of adult nonsmokers are regularly exposed to second-hand smoke, increasing non-smokers’ risks of tobacco related disease, disability, and death. Under current Queensland legislation, local councils have the power to introduce bans on smoking in public places.

Imagine singing your heart out to an audience of 15,000 people, performing Thriller in a crowded festival street, joining a procession of Balinese Kecak dancers, feeling your spirit soar on a Flying Trapeze or counting down to New Years Eve while a massive audience waits to explode at midnight. Woodford Folk Festival invites you to unleash your hidden performer; no experience is necessary, just daily rehearsals culminating in performances to unsuspecting audiences.
Local ladies take a fragrant leap Local producers Jody West and Di West are regulars at the Suncoast Growers markets and know that stunning, fresh blooms don’t need to cost a fortune. Banana growers since the 1970’s, Jody and Di branched out recently into a colourful fragrant new world and Farm Fresh Flowers was formed. “We source all of our blooms direct from about six growers each week, pick only the best quality growers and sell our flowers at wholesale prices to maintain a good turnover of Di and Jodie fresh blooms,” Ms West said. They said their vibrant Heliconias, with their stunning red and yellow blooms, would make a stunning centerpiece to any Christmas table, and sell for only $10.00. Jody and Di have been involved in horticulture on the Sunshine Coast for 40 years and their families still have farms at Beerwah, Beerburrum and at Wamuran in the southern hinterland. They both married into the banana industry many years ago and until recently had been focused on trying to find profitable ways to grow and market smaller, sweeter, subtropical bananas. Farm Fresh Flowers are just one of a range of specialty producers who regularly sell at the markets, which are held every Saturday at Suncoast Christian Church carpark from 6.30am - 12.00noon with a special preChristmas twilight market on December 22, from 4.00pm - 8.00pm. The new location is at the corner of Kiel Mountain and Schubert Roads, Woombye, taking the Palmwoods overpass.

Worshippers bid fond farewell to Rev Green
Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Fr Stan Griffith Associate Pastor, Caloundra Catholic Parish
Christmas, a time of hope
There is no doubt that we live in a fear filled world. Fear is a terrible thing. It cripples us into passivity. It ruins our memories of the past or the present, and it undermines dignified, trusting and respectful relations. Broadly speaking, we fear four things: God, nature, other people and sometimes ourselves. Yet the essential message of Christmas was given by the angel, “Be not afraid.” It is a message we find hard to accept in our daily living. St Paul tells us that love drives out all fear. This is why we celebrate Christmas - love has taken human form in Jesus Christ the Lord. Thus we are celebrating the birthday of a man whose life, death and resurrection showed us the way out of our fears, revealed the truth that sets us free and gave us the life that we can live to the full in this world and into eternity.
Christmas is the feast when God calls us to be active in bringing God’s kingdom to bear in our world. Christmas is the feast when our memories are joined to God’s, who remembers us in our fears. Christmas is the feast when all Christian relationships are defined by the dignity, trust and respect thy bestow on ourselves and all we relate to. As a result of the babe at Bethlehem, God has shown us that fear is not our calling and that the saving love of Jesus impels us to take risks in how we live out a life of faith, hope and love. God’s message at this wonderful time reads, “Do not be...afraid, I am bringing you good news of great joy...to you is born this day...a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord.” To all, a happy, holy and peaceful Christmas.

HIGH QUALITY NEEDED WHEN SEEKING COMMERCIAL FINANCE Businesses seeking commercial financing need to devote more effort to presenting high-quality applications to lenders, according to a leading local commercial finance adviser. Teresa Harrison, Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser, said that in a significantly tightened commercial lending environment, the quality of the funding application presented to lenders was a key determinant in whether funding was obtained. “Anyone who has tried to secure commercial finance in the past 12 months or increase their loan facility would have found it a difficult process,” Teresa said.
“Commercial borrowers are having to face the challenges of increased interest rates, risk margins and reduced gearing ratios.” “The banks are telling me that they still have money to lend, but they need to see quality applications. Banks want to see a lot more professionalism in the applications they receive for commercial finance with appropriate risk assessment.” “This feedback reinforces the importance of having the right transaction structure in place and making the right presentation to the banks when seeking commercial finance.”
Teresa said even good quality clients who represented a low risk to the banks were having to pay an unnecessary premium for commercial finance because of the GFC and the risk adversity of the banks. “Many banks are using a ‘one size fits all’ approach given the tougher market conditions, rather than pricing for the risk of the individual client – resulting in higher interest rates and tightening lending conditions,” she said. Many people would be experiencing interest rate increases. At the same time, customers are being asked to
reduce their gearing levels. For example, you might have a $2 million property with a $1.4m facility which is geared to 70 per cent (e.g. 70% LVR). Following a review, it is not uncommon for the bank to decide this gearing needs to be reduced down to 60-65 per cent, meaning you need to contribute an additional $100,000 to $200,000 to reduce the outstanding Call Adviser Teresa Harrison. borrowings. T: 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 “Higher interest rates and www.smartline.com.au/tharrison reduced gearing levels mean businesses seeking commercial finance are being hit with a double edged sword,” Teresa said. Property safety over the festive season
Space without the price! $369,000
With Senior Constable Krista Owens, Beerwah Police The holiday period is nearly upon us, as the weather improves. During the holiday period residents can take the following simple precautions to secure their home and property while they are away: • Check that all doors and windows are securely locked. • Lock the rubbish bin in the garage, or have a neighbour place rubbish in your bin as well and put it out at the usual times. • Have your mail held at the Post Office, re-directed or collected by a friend or neighbour. • Place a NO JUNK MAIL sticker on the letterbox and have any extraneous material collected by a friend or neighbour. • Cancel all deliveries of milk, newspapers etc. • Arrange for paths and driveways to be kept free of litter. • Do not leave keys concealed for others to use - offenders may utilise them as well. • Advise local police of your absence and provide them with a contact address / phone number for while you are away. • Advise neighbours of your intended absence and ask that they report suspicious people or vehicles near your home to police immediately. • Lock away garden tools, ladders and anything which may be used to gain entry to your home or other premises. • Disconnect the electrical supply to garage doors and lock the doors in the closed position. • Use an automatic timer to operate selected lights and radios in the house. Remember to lock the electricity meter box using locks provided by your local electricity authority. • Do not leave notes advertising your absence and ask neighbours not to tell callers that you are on holidays. • Interior doors should be locked and keys removed to make movement within the house difficult for an intruder. • If an alarm is fitted, ensure that it has the ability to either reset itself or be reset by the monitoring company in the event of activation by heat wave or power failure. • Do not leave answering machine messages advising of your absence on holiday. • Turn down the volume on your telephone just prior to leaving the house. • JOIN A NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH GROUP. A good neighbour can be as effective as a police patrol in deterring crime and protecting your home while you are away.

Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 As I wandered through our garden looking to choose which of the spectacular plants I could share with you for Christmas, I marvelled at how the mild winter and wet spring has provided such great growing conditions for bromeliads. We have so much colour at present with reds, yellows, burgundy and the green leaves trimmed with cream or pink, they may also be banded or speckled. The one that stood out most of all is Aechmea nudicaulis. These plants have now been in flower for several weeks and will still be in full bloom for Christmas.
This Aechmea species is one of the most widespread bromeliads in the Americas region (where it comes from), and is usually found growing as an epiphyte. It is a tough tubular plant with prominent spines bordering mottled green leaves. The cylindrical upright, fire-engine red and yellow flower spikes, formed in mid-to-late summer, are clearly visible from a distance and never fail to attract the attention of visitors. They turn from yellow to a pale shade of greenish yellow, while the red envelope retains its striking red. This plant can take relatively harsh conditions, and doesn’t have much root system when grown in soil, so is best grown as an epiphyte or over rocks, and looks spectacular when placed in trees. It can give the appearance of a decorated Christmas tree, with the red and yellow flowers spikes resembling Christmas lights.
Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Holly Leaved Fuschia, Graptophyllum ilicifolium After the good old Christmas tree, the next plant we think of when our thoughts turn to Christmas is Holly. Here in Australia we have an awesome plant whose foliage and flowers are second to none. The Holly Leaved Fuschia has stunning foliage and large clusters of deep red flowers. These flowers are full of nectar and are bird attracting. The Holly Leaved Fuschia is naturally found in small areas of lowland rainforest near Mackay. Here on the Sunshine Coast it makes a beautiful shrub 2 to 3m high and 2m wide. It does well in full sun to semi shade. Small potted If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview.
specimens in decorated pots also make a great Christmas ornament or table centrepiece. Why not make our Aussie flora part of your Christmas this year? Phone 5494 5980. Email: gogreenrainforest@bigpond.com Now open 7 days.
More Australians using rainwater tanks The use of rainwater tanks by Australian households continues to increase, according to a report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Twenty six per cent of households used a rainwater tank as a source of water in March 2010, up from 19 per cent in 2007. Almost half (49 per cent) of South Australian households used a rainwater tank, followed by Queensland (36 per cent) and Victoria (30 per cent). The Northern Territory had the lowest proportion of households (five per cent) that used a rainwater tank. Over the past three years, the greatest increase in rainwater tank use was in Queensland and Victoria.
Of households living in a dwelling suitable for a rainwater tank, the percentage that has a rainwater tank installed has increased from 24 per cent in 2007 to 32 per cent in 2010. Brisbane had the largest increase of households that have a rainwater tank at their dwelling, from 18 per cent in 2007 to 43 per cent in 2010. The proportion of households residing at a dwelling less than one year old that have a rainwater tank installed has risen to 57 per cent in 2010, compared with 26 per cent in 2007. The reasons reported by Australian households for installing a rainwater tank were 'to save water' (47 per cent) and 'restrictions on mains water' (24 per cent). Melbourne had the highest proportion of households (47 per cent) to report water restrictions as a reason for installing a rainwater tank.
Government launches online database for waterwise plants Queenslanders can now go online to find the most water efficient plants to grow in their area by searching a comprehensive new database of almost 4,500 plants. Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources and Member for Capalaba, Michael Choi said the Waterwise Plant Selector is a searchable database of plants suited to the seven biogeographical climate zones in Queensland, from the arid stretches of the central west to tropical monsoonal regions of the north and the subtropical south-east corner. "The Waterwise Plant Selector is a comprehensive database, featuring an extensive range of native and non-native plant species. "The database allows Queenslanders to search by their postcode to select water efficient
This Aechmea is extremely variable in size, foliage colour and flower colour and form. It is also hardy, blooms regularly, and soon multiplies to form an interesting colony of plants. You will enjoy the year round contribution this species will provide in your garden. Happy bromeliad growing and have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year until we meet again in 2011.

plants suited to their climatic region and local conditions. "It has been developed as a key component of the Bligh Government's Waterwise Gardens Program, which provides a comprehensive range of webbased information products to help gardeners establish and maintain water efficient gardens. Handy HomeHints Hints With all this wet weather our exterior timber work has been taking a beating. Rot sets in where water can get to timber. This is where paint helps out. However the best paint job cannot work if there are cracks or gaps between two pieces of timber. The best solution to this is to seal gaps with sicaflex, or gapfiller and paint, often with a mould killer additive. You may have noticed (with the changes to paint, due to no lead or CFC's etc) that paint isn't protecting as well as it used to. To all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year from Rick at Rick's All Maintenance Services. Cheers,
Rick

We finished the first half of our season last Friday night and start back again on Friday, January 14. We will be remaining at Beerwah Sports Ground until the end of this season in order to ensure the best setup at Skippy Park for the season beginning in September next year. Our season included a very successful Pentathlon held on November 28, with thanks going to both participating athletes from many clubs around the area, as well as their families for supporting a wonderful event. Thank you also to our Glasshouse District families and volunteers who helped the day run smoothly. Gowinta’s sweet deal with Bulldogs Gowinta Farms have joined with the Beerwah Bulldogs as major sponsor for the 2011 local rugby league season. Gowinta Farms initial $7,500 sponsorship will inject part of the funds needed to aid the development of all players in the upcoming year. The decision to support the Bulldogs was an easy choice after owner, Leonard Smith spent his childhood playing for the club and later coaching juniors after injury. The Smith family believes in developing kids’ footballing careers from an early age and supporting the region’s football passion. Earlier last week, Bulldogs president, Dean Roberts
confirmed that the club will be nominating for the return of A grade, reserves and under 18 football. The club have also announced their 2011 coaching staff as Scott Hirst for A grade, Wayne Kidd for reserve and Stephen Pitt as the Under 18 coach. Pre-season training begins January 11; two months prior to the official kick off. Club officials are confident with such strong financial, player and coaching support in 2011, the district will prove their might in the local competition. For club and players information, contact 0418 816 605.
Len Smith presents Dean Roberts with the sponsorship cheque, who is congratulated by James Ward, CEO of Sunshine Coast-Gympie Rugby League
Local girls get their first national medals Kaysanne Hockey and Rebekah White recently happy with her performance. Both girls have trained hard all year and want travelled to Doncaster, Melbourne to compete to thank their parents, schools and coaches for in the inaugural Australian All Schools Athletics their support. After a short break for Christmas Championships. Both girls did really well to place 3rd in their events under steamy 30 degree heat, which suited them considering the name of the Queensland team was ‘The Heat’. The best of the best came from all around Australia to compete, competitors had to place 1st or 2nd at states to be invited to go to these national titles. Kaysanne competed in the 18 years girls hammer throw and although it wasn’t a personal best she was very pleased with her results. Rebekah qualified for the 16 girls 90 metre hurdles earlier in the day, and then ran the final mid afternoon to win her bronze medal. This was a personal best Kaysanne Hockey and Rebekah White with their medals for Rebekah and she was very

Tibro’s Netball Club’s unsung hero In September, a very humble Dimi Young was awarded an inaugural Life Membership for her commitment and service to the Tibro’s Netball Club. While everyone will tell you how many hours Dimi has dedicated to the club over the past 22 years, Dimi herself will be very reserved and honest in saying that she does it for the love of it. Dimi was a member of the founding committee of Tibro’s Netball Club 22 years ago. She has coached for 14 years, played for many, she has been a rep coach for Caloundra representative netball for many years, president of the club from 2000 to 2003 and has been treasurer for at least three years. Dimi is currently the umpiring convenor for Tibro’s as well as for the Caloundra Netball Association. Between coaching netball and umpiring for both Tibro’s and Caloundra, she has taught hundreds of girls to play and umpire netball. Current president and friend, Mary-Lou Oliver presented a very surprised Dimi with a key pendant and plaque at the club’s annual presentation evening. “It is really difficult to say exactly what Dimi
Dimi and Mary-Lou has done for the club (especially considering all the fund raising events, barbeques, court line marking and she and her husband erecting the shelter shed) but suffice to say she has made a fantastic contribution and Tibro’s Netball Club wouldn’t be the club it is today without her,” Mary-Lou said. So a huge thank you goes out to Dimi from all of us at the Tibro’s Club.
Landsborough Tennis Club Celebrations Contributed by Greg Daniel
Despite the inclement weather, the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Landsborough Tennis Club went ahead on December 5. Everyone was keen to get out on the courts but unfortunately the rain prevented this. It was wonderful to meet some of the foundation members – Robin Bismark, Noela Frizzo, Frank and Dawn Wendt and to hear their fascinating stories. Other early members, some of whom are still playing competition tennis, joined in with their stories and all enjoyed their morning tea and barbecue lunch. A booklet of the early days and

Tuesday December 7, was our Patroness Day. We had a lucky break in the weather for Teresa. The Spider winners were Teresa Scarffe and Judy Walker. I believe a little cheating took place with some hands in the way of other Bowls. The day was won by D. Metcalfe, G. Henderson and Joy Ensbey. Runners up were Julie Hart and Brian Saunders. Raffle winners were D. Metcalfe, E. Pierce and J. Hart. A great day. Friday December 10 winners were The Kelly Gang, Frank and Dick, second Bob Patten and Kev Woodman and third The Eels. Saturday was our Christmas Lunch. Thirty people enjoyed a lovely meal and yummy dessert. Prizes for Championship winners were presented and everyone had a great day.We will be still Bowling until our second Bowl Triples game on the January 10.The Green will then be out for six to ten weeks.
Share the details of your clubs Blood, Sweat and Cheers the Club’s progress was handed out. Then, it was time to cut the cake with the honours going to Clarry Early, Noela Frizzo and Dawn Wendt.
