Hi everyone

Ok it’s official, we have finally reached December 1, so we can now get the Chrissy tree out and decorations up, and start the countdown of the number of sleeps until the big fella comes down the chimney. I say this as if we at GCNews have actually waited until now to deck the halls (well our office), but as there are quite a few of us that love making the most of Christmas we start putting our decorations up on the afternoon of Melbourne Cup. Once the race that stops the nation has finished we move straight into our festive season, which basically means if we used an Advent calendar, ours would need 53 doors to open. Which when you think about it means 53 chocolates – so it totally makes sense to me! For those of you who do not share my enthusiasm for the festive season and have not go your to-do

list under control you might want to take a look at our new Be Wise ‘advice column’ on page 26, where Glasshouse local Penny Pincher shares her views on the countdown to Christmas. Entries have know closed for the Christmas light competition but if you would like to have your property listed on our public viewing list give Sarah a call on 5494 6066 or email reception@gcnews.com.au Here’s to a fabulous countdown!

Regards,

This week in gcnews 5

Did someone mention a rail upgrade?

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP is calling on Sunshine Coast locals to remind the Bligh Labor Government it needs an upgraded rail service now. “The Government continues to let Sunshine Coast residents down. The Beerburrum to Landsborough and Landsborough to Nambour upgrades are in a perpetual holding pattern, now not due until 2031,” Mr Powell said. “To add salt to the wound, the Minister has now released a draft train timetable for 2011 that will make it next to impossible for Sunshine Coast commuters to travel to and from Brisbane at a convenient time. Many residents remember a day they were promised reduced travel times, not reduced services. “Instead of committing funding now for the upgrade, the Bligh Labor Government has to waste money on temporary fixes at stations such as Mooloolah, Eudlo and Palmwoods. The delay is also creating increasing frustrations for the Sunshine Coast Council as they endeavour to plan for these railway communities. “It all adds up to aggravation and annoyance for Coast public transport users,” Mr Powell said. “I’m calling on locals to support a petition demanding that the Minister to reassess the

Wheels in motion for Beerwah bikeway Building bikeways that encourage kids to ride to school rather than travelling by car is a blueprint for a better environment and healthier youngsters. It’s an outcome Sunshine Coast Council has achieved at Beerwah State School after constructing a shared bikeway along Peachester Road that links with the school campus. Division 1 Councillor, Anna Grosskreutz said the project had provided mutual benefits. “As part of this project some of the school’s land was donated to Council to allow the bikeway to be constructed along Peachester Road,” she said. “In return, Council provided a dedicated bike shelter to the school to allow students to lock up their bikes during the day and encourage more youngsters to ride their bikes and scooters to school.

“This is consistent with Council’s aim to pave the way for more students to ride bikes to school rather than relying on the car and improve environmental sustainability across our region.” Beerwah State School Principal, Eric Greentree said the new bike shelter would house the school’s existing bike racks and included room for more than 60 bikes and scooters. “This is a great result for our students and I thank Sunshine Coast Council for engaging in a successful working partnership with our school to achieve this outcome,” he said. The new bike shelter was officially opened last week.

Hair one day, gone the next

Some of the male staff at Matilda Glasshouse have been on a mission of late. A mo-growing mission in fact, and last week we were privileged enough to speak with Gavin and Shane and find out just how well they have fared on their month-long journey. Judging from appearances, the men have made a fair effort, but they admit, as first timers, it’s taken a lot of perseverance to make their ‘mo’s’ happen. Even a tip from one of their customers – to put hair conditioner on their mo, hasn’t proven too helpful, but at the end of the day, their efforts have certainly made an impression, with customers generously donating to their Movember appeal. At last count, the guys were well on their way to raising in excess of $500.00 for the worthwhile fundraiser. But if you are hoping to catch a glimpse of their mos in the flesh, you had better be quick – both Gavin and Shane have confirmed that although they were keen to support the Movember appeal, the mo’s will be coming off today (December 1). Well done, guys, and to the team at Matilda Glasshouse, and all those that have supported them during Movember.

We'll blame the light - being such a bright day when we took this photo of Gavin and Shane, its difficult to make out their month-long Movember efforts, but rest assured, their 'mos' are there!

Movember mates

Just down the road, there’s been another concerted mo-growing effort happening behind the counter at Beerwah Meats. The entire team, including one eager customer, have banded together for the second year to raise funds for Movember by donning facial hair. Sam’s efforts (pictured right) have not been well supported, so he’s resorted to artificial enhancement. But for the rest of the team, they have done themselves proud, and thanks to the support of their generous customers, raised around $200.00 in the process. But just like their Movember mates at Matilda Glasshouse, you’d better get in quick if you want to catch them in all their mo glory – they’ve been quick to assure us the mo’s are coming off after the final day of the appeal.

Double the sport, double the success Most people are lucky if they find one thing in life they are truly talented at, but at just 11 years of age, Hunter Lawrence, from Landsborough, has found two. Not only is Hunter a motocross dirt bike champion, he has also recently won his first boxing competition bout in the 45kg class at Bribie Island after starting the sport just six months ago. Hunter started training at the Mooloolah Valley Boxing Club with experienced coaches Wayne Keeble and Adolphe Esparon as a way to increase his fitness for motocross. “Then I started sparring with some other kids that go to the club and I really got into it,” Hunter said. “I wanted to go into my first bout for a good experience. I like the adrenaline and the challenge. It keeps your mind working. Everyone is supportive and I try to be supportive back.” Hunter’s dad, Darren, has seen his son’s involvement in boxing benefit all areas of his life.

“It’s very confidence inspiring for the kids and Hunter’s schoolwork and behaviour has improved,” he said. Being involved in two sports sees Hunter training most days of the week. He started dirt bike racing when he was four-years-old and has won many trophies over the years, but this year saw him achieve his best result yet, winning the Honda Australian National Title for the 65cc nine to 11 years class. He was also invited to compete in the New Zealand National Titles recently, which he also won. “I was really proud of myself. Really happy because I won two titles in one year, that’s a big achievement for me. I like the adrenaline and the challenge and I get to see all my mates at the track,” he said. Wayne Keeble has coached numerous young boxers over the years who have won state and national titles, as well as Golden Glove Titles. He said Hunter has an important quality. “He wants to be successful at anything he wants to do. We’re all proud of him here,” he said.

Hunter Lawrence Hunter would like to thank the Mooloolah Valley Boxing Club coaches Wayne and Adolphe for their support as well as all his sponsors including Crazy Dogs Kawasaki, Fox and MP Suspension. Mooloolah Valley Boxing Club meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5.00pm to 7.00pm, plus sparring at other clubs. For more information ring 5494 7601.

Pete

Do you drive a silver car? Do have long dark hair? Were you the lady smiling at the guy driving the white station wagon on Saturday, November 6? If that was you, Pete 35, from Glass House Mountains is looking for you. To try and find the lady who took his breath away Pete recently placed an ad in the classified section of GCNews. Pete explained the moment he saw her. “I pulled in to get fuel at Matilda on Steve Irwin Way, and when I came out I saw a lady drive past. We both went onto the Bruce Highway and when I overtook, she looked over and both of us had a big smile.” They continued smiling at each other as they headed south. Unfortunately Pete had to turn off at Burpengary, but they waved to each other when he exited. “I haven’t had a lift like that in a long time, so I thought I had to have a crack at finding her. The next day after seeing her I saw the movie Serendipity. It’s the same sort of case, that he’s looking for a lady.” So what was it about her that left him smitten? “She smiled and that caught me. Her beautiful smile,” he said. Pete is philosophical about his chances of finding his mystery lady. “It would be nice. If it does it does, if it doesn’t it doesn’t, in the sense that, she could be on the other side of Brisbane and never know anything about it. But if you don’t try something you’re not going to know either.” While Pete admits he is a romantic he’s never done anything like this before. “If she does get in touch I’d be pretty rapt. If she’d like to have a cuppa with me, or dinner that would be lovely,” he said. There is one important thing he’d like her to know. Pete is single. In the movie Serendipity, John Cusack had to wait seven years before he finally found his lady. Let’s hope Pete doesn’t have to wait that long. If you are the mystery lady you can contact Pete by sending a message to PO Box 366, Glass House Mountains.

Brendan Schmidt - achieving the dream Beerwah’s Brendan Schmidt, 20, cannot remember when he did not want to be a soldier. Now he is deployed to East Timor as part of the Australian-led International Stabilisation Force. “East Timor is a very beautiful country with lots of friendly locals,” Brendan said. “When I first arrived here I was surprised to see how developed Dili was compared to what I had imagined.” Brendan joined the Army in 2008 from school — he was one of the first people to test-drive the Gap Year program, where school-leavers can try out the Army, Navy or Air Force for a year without obligation to stay longer. He did his basic training in NSW and then served as an infantryman with the Townsville-based 2nd Battalion during the rest of his Gap Year. He enjoyed it so much that when the year was up he stayed on in the Army Reserve as a member of the 9th Battalion, the Royal Queensland Regiment, part of Queensland’s 11 Brigade. Brendan and his fellow soldiers got the chance to deploy to East Timor following the success of Army Reserve soldiers in the Solomon Islands. Brendan gladly answered the call. Now he is on the streets of Dili doing the job he dreamed of. “It’s very rewarding,” he said. “It is all hands-on and allows me to interact with the local people.” “I am involved in providing security to various facilities, patrolling through Dili and conducting regional patrols to outlying districts.”

Brendan Schmidt While he takes his job seriously Brendan said there is plenty of humour too. “The most memorable has been watching a small van drive past with a goat standing on the roof,” Brendan said. “Not something you see in Beerwah every day.” Story and image reproduced courtesy of Department of Defence.

A special thank you to Brendan’s family for sharing his achievements with GCNews readers. Have you got a story or special news to share? We welcome story ideas and contributions from our readers, and encourage you to send through your suggestions, along with any photos of social events, to editorial@gcnews.com.au, or if you would prefer, give us a call on 5494 6066. Beerwah students leadership day Contributed by Year 6 students

ABBA RE-BJORN SHOW Saturday 11th December Free show from 9pm

Malibu’oth Promotion Saturday 11th December

On Monday, November 15, a group of Year 6 students attended a leadership day at Bli Bli State School. When we arrived we were excited and looking forward to the day. The first activity we had to complete brought about some laughs. We had to make adjectives for our names. The funniest was ‘Long-legged Lucy’. Next we had to complete five rotations. These were all group activities and helped us develop leadership skills. The best activity by far was ‘TANK’. We were blind folded and a leader was to direct us into battle. The day overall helped us develop skills in leadership and co-operation. We enjoyed working with different schools and we are lucky that we were able to participate.

Never fear! The end of the school year is near!

1 NIGHT, 4 AMAZING SHOWS & 2011 CELEBRATIONS

midnight rendezvous

Many say ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ but here at Glasshouse Country Christian College, the senior students tend to believe that time flies when your whole life is consumed by the stack of assignments overflowing on your desk. Term four, is of course, the most hectic of them all when it comes to assessment and College milestone events – so if you see frantic students looking like they’re ready to pull their hair out in the later months of the year – never fear! The end of the school year is near! While the past couple months have flown by, many exciting events have also. The Class of 2010, looking suitably dashing, proudly showcased their finest at the College’s formal. Their graduation ceremony and ‘clap-out’ was also a great success – with many fresh graduates eager to boast of their new found ‘freedom.’ The College’s Sports Awards Night headliner, Peri Campbell-Innes, a Commonwealth Games Table Tennis athlete was an audience favourite and earlier in November, Joshua Davis was named College Captain for 2011. This year has been busy yet lively and it is definitely time for the students to take a well deserved holiday break. I look forward to seeing new bubbly faces around the College and excitedly taking on the position of College Vice-Captain in 2011. Until next year…

Congratulations Mrs Owen on a job well done Back on Friday, July 23, and very much to Leon Owen’s surprise, staff and students celebrated her 20 years of dedicated service at Peachester State School. She has taught a range of classes in her time at the school. Mrs Owen is one of those special people born to be a teacher and her

Leon Owen with Peachester State School students

Fairytales at Eudlo Contributed by Kate Laverack (Year 2 / 3 teacher)

In term three, our Year 2 / 3 students of Eudlo State School worked extremely hard learning all about fairytales. Students wrote and illustrated their very own fairytale stories. They also put their design skills to good use and constructed The Three Little Pigs house of sticks and made a bridge strong enough to help the Three Billy Goats Gruff escape from the troll. On Wednesday, September 15, parents, family members and friends were invited into our Year

enthusiasm has never wavered. She is constantly looking at ways of improving teaching and getting the most out of her students. Mrs Owen is now teaching second generation students after teaching their parents at Peachester earlier on in her career at the school. At a special school parade current students Archie Merritt and Rhiarn Tranter (whose parents Mrs Owen taught) presented her with a dedicated paver that will be included in the school’s new entrance pathway. It will be a permanent reminder of what a wonderful teacher she has been. A beautiful cake was enjoyed by all for morning tea to help her celebrate. Mrs Owen has been instrumental in many other aspects of the school and community including implementing the Jollyphonics program into the school which has been a great success. Three cheers, Mrs Owen, and we hope you are still teaching our kids in another 20 years. 2 / 3 classroom to celebrate the hard work of our students and to watch our very own performances of four fairytale stories. They performed Sleeping Beauty, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Students brought in their own costumes for their character and made props for their performances at school. All groups worked very hard to create their actions and to learn their lines. It was a fantastic afternoon and we certainly noticed a few budding actors and actresses in our class. Well done to everyone involved!

275g jar cranberry sauce (see note) 1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar Whole cloves, to decorate

Place oven shelf in lowest position. Preheat oven to 180 C/160 C fan-forced. Using a small, sharp knife, cut through ham rind 8cm from shank. Run thumb underneath rind to separate from fat. Peel back and remove rind. Score the fat in a diamond pattern (see tip). Press one clove in the centre of each diamond to decorate. Place ham on a wire rack in a large roasting pan. Combine cranberry sauce and vinegar in a microwave-safe jug. Microwave on HIGH (100 per cent) for 20 to 30 seconds or until heated through and smooth. Brush half the cranberry mixture over ham. Cover shank end with foil to prevent it burning. Bake, using a pastry brush to baste with remaining cranberry mixture halfway during cooking, for 45 minutes to one hour or until glaze starts to caramelise. Serve.

Notes: Be careful not to score the fat too deeply, otherwise fat will melt and spread during cooking. You could use redcurrant jelly instead of cranberry sauce.

Experience more important then qualifications Australian employers are placing more importance than ever on practical experience over academic qualifications with 93 per cent of small business owners prioritiseing on-the-job experience over tertiary qualifications. The bad news continues for younger Australians hunting for employment, with 82 per cent of small businesses saying they would prefer to hire a Baby Boomer or a member of Generation X compared to just 16 per cent for Generation Y. According to the BOQ Straight Talk Survey, a regular nation-wide survey that canvasses the views and experiences of small business owners, Australian small business owners are looking for age and experience over academic qualifications and youthful enthusiasm. BOQ Beerwah Owner-Manger Jeff Willis said the survey had found that Australian small businesses still saw a gap in the practical skills of tertiary qualified job applicants. “There is little doubt that strong academic qualifications put job applicants in a positive light,” said Jeff. “However with levels of employment improving all the time, and the job market tightening, young people with little practical experience are still not the first choice for potential employers. It appears that there is still some work to be done to further develop levels of practical experience within tertiary courses.” Despite this result, small businesses were still overwhelmingly positive about their future hiring outlook. “The good news is that almost 30 per cent of small businesses surveyed planned to hire a trainee or an apprentice in the next 12 months,” Jeff said. “This result indicates that despite some concerns about hiring, there are still opportunities within the small business sector for younger Australians.” “A willingness to learn and work within a team is still seen as a key priority for small business owners. Academic qualification combined with some practical experience and a willingness to learn still seems to be the most successful approach to securing job hunting success.”

Remember, the Lions club has members who are available and willing to help with other group fund raising activities. Have barbecue trailer, will travel! Just give us a call or contact any Lion. On November 24, Beerwah Lions Club welcomed Patricia Jutila into their membership. Her sponsoring Lion is Robert Greenwood with Lion Max Pinwill performing the ceremony of induction. Lions ask locals to support local business establishments who advertise in this Directory. On December 7 the members will be assisting at the ABC Learning Centre Christmas celebration at Glasshouse Mountains by doing what we know will be a very busy barbeque for the excited little children when Santa visits. Shortly Lions members will again be out with Rotary members judging your fantastic Christmas Lights. This is a great spectacle for everyone to view. A new way in aged care How do you describe a whole new way in aged care when there’s simply nothing else like it? Seasons is more than just an incredibly exciting new way in aged care. It is a new industry benchmark - a direct and dedicated response to growing public dissatisfaction with existing options in aged care in this country. Seasons' communities across Queensland are rapidly redefining Australia’s expectations of aged care. Two things Seasons is definitely not - we are not a retirement village, nor are we anything like a traditional nursing home. Developed by a team of Australia’s most innovative aged care experts, Seasons combines the independence and privacy of home ownership with state-of-the-art facilities and unprecedented levels of roundthe-clock nursing care. Seasons Caloundra is our latest community to open. At Seasons, residents enjoy the privacy and independence of their own

beautiful self-contained home in a loving, sharing community where they receive low, high and Dementia nursing care, 24 hours a day. Residents are especially encouraged to enjoy all the freedoms that are possible for them. At the hub of Seasons life is a thriving community and lifestyle centre, shared by residents and extended family alike. Equally popular is the community dining room which serves fresh, nourishing food whenever residents don’t feel like cooking in their own home. Couples can stay together at Seasons, even when one’s health needs change. And residents are welcome to bring their pets to live at Seasons as well. Fisher Australia Day awards

Parliamentary News

Those who know a local resident who works hard in a voluntary role for the community are encouraged to lodge a nomination for the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards, which will be announced and presented at a special function on Australia Day. Australia Day in 2011 will mark the 11th holding of the awards. For nomination forms, collect one from my office at Buddina or phone 5444 4888 and speak to Richard. Remember, the deadline is fast approaching and Australia Day will be here before we know it.

Forced marriage enquiry

Submissions are invited on a discussion paper on whether stronger measures are needed to address the practice of forced or servile marriage. The Government is committed to ensuring there are laws in place to protect individuals who have been forced into a marriage and to punish those responsible. Comment is invited on initiatives that could help address the issue, including new offences for those who force others into forced marriages, civil remedies such as protection orders and public education measures. Public comment must be lodged by February 4, 2011. The discussion paper is available at: www.ag.gov.au/forcedandservilemarriage.

Regional statistics

The Sunshine Coast remains one of the fastest growing regions in Queensland, behind only Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Moreton Bay. The figures are included in the latest release by the Australian Bureau of statistics. The figures make for some interesting reading: http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/3218.0/

The focus in Parliament for many of the members this week has been Caloundra South. Personally, I have serious concerns with the State Government taking over this development, not the least of which being that they’ve done just that, taken it over. The LNP has committed to restraining the use of Ministerial Call-in powers and will only do so after extensive community consultation. My other concerns focus on maintaining the green inter-urban corridor between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast and the environmental quality of the Pumicestone Passage and it’s catchment. I’m also keen to see public transport solutions delivered before the population arrives, not after. For more info, check out my website or go to www. jplangbroek.com/lnp-will-secure-sunshine-coast-lifestyle/.

Proposed changes to 2011 rail timetable

Thank you to those constituents who contacted my office in complete disbelief over the government’s proposed changes to the rail timetable for 2011. Anyone who contacted me should now have received a copy of a press release I issued on November 22 calling on the government to reassess the proposed changes and re-introduce express services to assist coast commuters travelling to the city for work. Please check my website www.andrewpowell.com.au if you would like to see a copy of my media release or would like to join the petition to see the rail duplication brought forward from 2031. I would encourage anyone who is unhappy with the proposed timetabling changes to attend the community consultation at the Nambour Community Centre on December 4 at 10.00am.

Local sporting champions program

Now I realise the school year has just finished, but I have recently been advised of some sporting grants that are available for teams and individuals up until February 2011. I was contacted through the year by quite a few student sporting champions who needed some assistance with travel expenses to and from their competitions at state level. There is a grant available though www. ausport.gov.au that has been designed to support young people participating in state and national sporting events. Participation can be as an athlete, coach, umpire or referee. Round two applications close on February 28 – please visit the website or call (02) 6214 1111 for more information.

Community programs

Work will be commencing this week to construct a 1.8 metre wide pathway between Earl Court and Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough. The works will be constructed on road reserve, and completion is expected to take about one week, weather permitting.

Free Tree Days

I recently held a number of Free Tree Days in my area, which were enormously popular and successful. During these Free Tree Days, I became increasingly aware of the amount of new residents we have in the district. Welcome to each and everyone and I hope you enjoy living in our region. All residents of the Sunshine Coast are welcome to attend my Free Tree Days, no matter what suburb they reside in. All that is required to be entitled to two free trees is a current rates notice. I am also happy to honour old rates notices, provided they have not been presented before, and are unstamped. I will be holding another series of Free Tree Days in the early part of next year, so keep an eye out for the dates and locations in my column.

Council Cabs celebrated its 2,000 customer during the month. The program continues to grow in success with around 80 regular users per month across the entire Sunshine Coast. After several months of planning, the Access and Equity Forum was conducted on November 4. The forum was a chance to present council and its partners to the community and gain feedback necessary to shape council’s approach in the coming years. With over 80 people attending, a better understanding of the difficulties and issues in access and equity was gained. This will assist in strategic development and program development. The Water and Sewerage Funding Program closed on November 19. We are looking forward to offering part-funding to a large number of local not-for-profit groups to help meet the large increase in water and sewerage bills, whilst also offering support in developing Water Efficiency Management Plans.

Cattle grid – Easter Mary River Road, Conondale

The cattle grid on Eastern Mary adjacent to 833 and 830 Eastern Mary is programmed for removal. The grid is in a state of disrepair and has been declared a hazard. The cost for complete replacement and compliance would be approximately $10,000. It will cost very much less for removal because it has no drainage system attached. Council has been liaising with property holders for several months and it appears that removal to be the best way forward.

Planning

At the most recent council general meeting, Council adopted the former Caloundra City Council planning sites know as the LGMS areas. These were not new planning areas but ones identified in a past planning scheme which had gone through consultation and State Interest checks. The council also identified other amendments in the previous Maroochy and Noosa Shires which were adopted as well. This tidies up past planning schemes as we now move forward as a Regional Council. The first Sunshine Coast Planning scheme is in its early drafting stages with Councillors expecting their first discussions before Christmas. 2011 will be the year for the community to have a say with Council intending to have a new planning scheme adopted by March 2012.

37,000 new library members

Council is looking for community feedback on what people want from their libraries. More than 37,000 people have joined Sunshine Coast Libraries in the last two years, bringing total membership to 120,000. Now you have the chance to tell us what other services you would like to see, or how we can improve the ones we already offer. And you could win a new i-Pad in the process, just by being involved and joining one of our focus groups! If you are not currently a Sunshine Coast Library member and would be interested in participating in one of the focus group sessions please contact 3138 9387 or email erica.cooke@connect.qut.edu.au Information provided in the focus groups will remain anonymous. Check the Sunshine Coast Libraries website www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

After being a Baker and owning his own Bakery for 47 years, Ivan Woodhouse decided it was time for a change. He thought he would like to mow people’s lawns but was unsure how to start on his own. “Then I saw an ad in the paper for James’ Home Services Lawn Mowing Franchise. After reading about James’ Home Services I decided James’ was the professional, reputable company I was looking for. After starting my business with James’ I haven’t looked back. I enjoy working for a company who constantly supports its Franchisees whether it is with the National Support Centre, ongoing Marketing or a Business Coach. I’m 68 ½ years young and love that it is my business, I can set my own hours and still have time for Golf!”

Strangers in the Box

Come; look with me inside this drawer In this box I’ve often seen, At the pictures, black and white, Faces proud, still, serene. I wish I knew the people, These strangers in the box, Their names and all their memories Are lost among my socks. I wonder what their lives were like, How did they spend their days? What about their special times? I’ll never know their ways.

If only someone had taken time To tell who, what, where, when, These faces of my heritage Would come to life again. Could this become the fate Of the pictures we take today? The faces and the memories Someday to be tossed away? Make time to save your pictures Seize the opportunity when it knocks, Or someday you and yours could be The strangers in the box.

It’s so easy to put off naming the people and places in our photographs. Most of us have been guilty of this, especially in the busy end-of-year, Christmas rush. We may know that the lady in the fancy hat is great aunt Betsy and the man holding a tennis racquet is cousin Alfred but will our grandchildren recognise them? Probably not. So, at this season when more photos are taken than at any other time of the year, the following poem serves as a timely reminder.

No lights this year, but just wait for next year

Through GCNews, I would like to apologise to all our regular viewers of our Christmas lights. Due to health not being real good in this past year, we are not lighting up this year. BUT you can all count on it; we will be back next year bigger and better than before. Hoping you all still come back to look next year, as it is all of you that make it so pleasurable. Once again sorry to you all and wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year. Steve and Teresa, 10 Coochin Hills Drive, Beerwah (2009 winners)

Thanks for the memories

We are writing to say thanks to three men who made our graduation dinner very special. To Kevin and Tony for driving us to the venue in their beloved classic cars and to Neil who took many beautiful photos, with the Glasshouse Mountains as our back drop. Thank you, it was certainly a day for us all to remember. Maddie, Emily, Bianca and Tess Beerwah High 2010 graduating students

is also totally unnecessary but worse still is the four wire barrier. How on earth can they justify using such a dangerous and ineffective barrier? It is a panel beater’s dream. What a waste of money. After all that improvement the speed limit has been reduced by 20 kph. Is this a joke? And from the highway towards Caloundra the speed limits drops from 100 kph as the road becomes totally straight and clear. Why? Accidents happen because of a lack of skill or lack of concentration not speed. Kurt Jensen Mooloolah

International Steve Irwin Day celebrations

Recently we were in Hawaii on holiday. On Sunday, November 14 (Hawaiian time), we decided to visit Honolulu Zoo and, after travelling in a media blackout as far as local news was concerned, found ourselves by sheer coincidence attending on Steve Irwin Day. We hadn’t ever thought about other countries celebrating Steve’s day and some of your readers may not be aware of it either. Because of our Aussie accents, we were wished a ‘Happy Steve Irwin Day’ quite often as we wandered around the exhibits. Christine and Kerry Graham Peachester

State member spin

State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle’s column (GCNews November 24) was interesting spin to say the least. At no stage at any of the meetings I or Council Staff attended was Mark anywhere in sight. These meetings to work through the financial arrangements for the new Beerwah Sportsground access were critical to the success of the new road. There was also some redesigning of the road and a range of permits issued by the state. A meeting has also been held since the announcement by the state and council with the president of the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee. Mark was not there either. As the representative who lives in the township of Beerwah and been helpful to both the Charity Sports and a whole host of other community run events over many years I would appreciate working with Mark rather than reading a spray about council which is as untrue as it is unhelpful. After all we are both elected to serve our community. Cr Anna Grosskreutz Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council

Beerwah Overpass tidy up Is this really the Smart State?

I have always enjoyed living in Mooloolah Valley and like most of the population I have been looking forward to the completion of Steve Irwin Way. But since I now have to travel further to Caloundra I’m thinking about moving somewhere else. Why do I now need to travel in the opposite direction towards Landsborough before turning around to go back to Caloundra? This means an extra two kilometres every time I go back and forth from Caloundra which can be twice a day. Perhaps traffic lights were on special because there are four traffic lights within four kilometres. Not bad for a little country road. Wouldn’t it have been smarter and a lot less costly to have bought the land on the opposite side and made a large roundabout? No traffic lights or huge sound barriers needed. All that paving and pretty lawn 24

Council is continuing to meet with officials of the Department of Transport and Main Roads to cement a maintenance schedule to maintain the appearance of the verges of the Beerwah Overpass. In the interest of making something happen faster I offered to bring my own brush cutter out of the shed and do it myself! The council parks team will now do the work whilst the Council and State Government Management sort out the financial arrangements. Cr Anna Grosskreutz Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council

Slower coast trains are timetabled

For anyone who uses the rail services to and from the city, they are about to get slower. You would think it would be the reverse, but sadly

no. Apparently servicing customers between Caboolture-Petrie and Northgate-Bowen Hills are the priority. Coast passengers would seem to be a secondary concern for what will become an urban service, and not Coast express services. Even the scheduling of the slower services makes you scratch your head in wonder with a 45 minute gap in services right over the end of commuters work day, 5.00pm - 6.00pm (5.02pm, 5.47pm, and 6.02pm). You can view the proposed changes via your local station or online here http://www.translink.com. au/travel-information/service-updates/queenslandrail-timetable-changes I would STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO LODGE A COMPLAINT about the service degradation either online (see above link) or at the single community information session on Saturday, December 4, 10.00am - 12.00noon at the Nambour Community Centre. You can also contact your local MP and the sitting/opposition Transport Ministers via http://www.qld.gov.au/ contact Oh and don’t forget fares will go up 10 - 15 per cent yearly now, in addition to the 30 - 40 per cent hike we had last January! On the bright side, we’ll no longer hear rail staff announce at Elimbah and Beerburrum ‘please be patient while we wait for the timetable to catch up’, but do get used to ‘Toombul next station, Toombul next station platform is on your right’... Jeff Price Beerwah

Swim and survive As many as one in five children will leave primary school this year not even having the skills to swim the length of an Olympic swimming pool, according to Royal Life Saving. CEO Rob Bradley says the issue is of grave concern as potentially thousands of school children are leaving primary school with virtually no ability to swim and being unable to demonstrate the basic survival and water safety techniques that could save their lives in an emergency. Royal Life Saving warn that the issue has now become a ‘ticking time bomb’ that will impact families and communities across the country in years to come, as well as putting further pressure on drowning rates. Mr Bradley said parents make a false assumption that secondary schools will fill this gap and that many children are falling between the cracks altogether because many secondary schools now don’t teach swimming, water safety and lifesaving as a skill. In response to this issue, Royal Life Saving is calling for a greater focus on swimming and water safety skills. It says that almost 15 million Australian children have completed its highly 26 |

| DECEMBER 1 2010

successful ‘Swim and Survive’ program since 1980, and it believes it will need to increase this to one million children a year in response to the problem. The Swim and Survive program is proudly supported by Uncle Tobys ® and is available through schools, at pools and is often used by government supported vacation water safety schemes. The Royal Life Saving 2010 National Drowning Report reveals the number of drowning deaths is the highest number at any time in the past seven years, with 314 drowning deaths, with an overall increase of 20 per cent in two years. Be Wise by Penny Pincher

A Calm Countdown to Christmas? Believe it or not but some people have already finished their Christmas preparations. They buy cards, wrapping paper, bonbons and more at the post Christmas sales from the previous year. They buy presents throughout the year. They buy a single item of non-perishable Christmas food every week to put away. Their handwritten Christmas Cards are already stamped and winging their way to all corners of the world. I am not one of those people. My blood pressure is rising daily with every sign blaring that Christmas is but a few short weeks away. It’s enough to make my fake Christmas tree branches wilt – or would if the tree had been put up. Even Santa has helpers so how do the rest of us mere mortals get through the next few weeks with as minimal stress as possible? Firstly, start Christmas shopping right now and get to the shops very early - nothing is more stressful than fighting for car spots on Christmas Eve at 12.00noon. Too much to do? Delegate. Let the kids decorate the tree, wrap presents (not the Santa ones, of course), even help cook – don’t underestimate their talents! Set a realistic gift budget and stick to it. Make it fun by setting a shopping challenge with a friend. Who can buy the most presents for under $100.00? Who can find the most quality gifts for $10.00 each - or less? If you are stressed because you can’t afford as many presents as you would like this year, there are alternatives - but that’s another column. Happy Christmas Countdown

International Volunteer Day International Volunteer Day (IVD) will be celebrated on Sunday, December 5. The day aims to recognise the work of volunteers around the world and the difference they make in their communities. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 and is now celebrated worldwide with thousands of volunteers involved. Volunteering Australia CEO, Cary Pedicini, says that volunteers are important no matter where or how they give their time. “We are very fortunate to have a strong volunteering culture in Australia with more than 5.4 million volunteers each year helping make Australia a great place to live. Whether it is the response to a major natural disaster or the everyday volunteering that often goes unrecognised, Australia is much better off because of the commitment of our volunteers.” The United Nations focus on volunteering continues with 2011 declared International Year of Volunteers plus 10 (IYV+10), a year that celebrates the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers in 2001. The theme for the year is ‘Inspiring the Volunteer in You’. Volunteering Australia thanks all volunteers for their dedication to helping others and calls on those who do not volunteer to consider taking that next step. VA’s volunteer match website is a great starting point to finding that perfect volunteering opportunity. www.govolunteer.com.au

Things 2 do

The Blackall Range ‘Woodcrafters’ Guild Inc Christmas exhibition This enthusiastic group of timber lovers, in conjunction with Santa and his helpers, presents a large proportion of all the goods The engine room under produced during the last year construction in the woodies shed in Santa’s workshop. This great Christmas exhibition, featuring woodcraft of all shapes and sizes will be at St Mary’s Hall, Village Green, Montville on Saturday and Sunday December 4 and 5 between 10.00am and 3.30pm. Some of Santa’s helpers will also be present to assist with selection and explanations where required. Most items on display will be for sale, making excellent and unique Christmas gifts for all ages, sizes, male or female. Goods will vary from the very large squatters chairs and large rocking horses, to a great variety of children’s toys – some education, some novel. Jewellery boxes, ornamental carvings, turned bowls of various shapes and sizes and many more useful items will be looking for a new home! Displays and decorations this year will be left in the capable hands of the female elves, who assure us, it will be quite different from previous years, taking away the ‘blokey’ look! One of the most eye-catching items on display (not for sale) is a rocking horse chair. This magnificent piece of art is a combined effort by a number of members. Being most suitable and safe for handicapped children, these members decided to donate it to the Nambour Special School. So please, no excuses. Come and see what Santa’s helpers have been up to this year. Entry is FREE!

Wildlife fundraiser Special fundraising event for local wildlife champions Ray and Murray Chambers, December 4 at Wung Nam Thai Water Restaurant, Caloundra www.wungnam.com.au to raise funds for the Sunshine Coast Koala Wildlife Rescue Service. The evening will include the sale of some beautiful art pieces donated by local artists Heather Gall, Jan Murray and a stunning jewellery piece by June Helens. Internationally renowned artist Gary Myers who also runs The Maleny Artists’ Retreat has also donated several limited edition prints. Accommodation vouchers and passes to Australia Zoo and Aussie World and Gift Baskets from Vegan Online and Gaia Natural Products will also be raffled off on the evening. Just recently, Ray and Murray, together with the staff at Australia Zoo, had over 70 koalas in their care at the Hospital. They regularly work 20+ hrs with their charges on top of holding down full time tradie jobs. They are true warriors and deserve our support. All monies raised will go directly to Ray and Murray to help them with the purchase of a plethora of essentials to look after these precious animals, including a new rescue truck. Cost is $10.00 per adult, $5.00 per child (dinner not included). Vegan meal choices on the evening available. Please bring your friends and family to show your support for these truly amazing Wildlife Warriors. RSVP to Jaylene by December 4, phone 0448 310 640, email sodapopz@hotmail.com

Out & about in Glasshouse country Cripes mate – the Ettamogah Pub is 21!

Last week, one of the coast’s most iconic venues, The Ettamogah Pub celebrated its 21st birthday with a week long celebration, capped off, of course, with a birthday cake not to be missed! Did you know that the rustic hand-made Blackbutt Gum and Camphor Laurel furniture inside the pub comes from the trees that were cleared from the site, while the bar in The Shed is made from one of the last trees milled from Fraser Island. For more information about what remains one of our favourite destinations, check it out online at www.aussieworld.com.au

NOT ALL LENDERS ARE THE SAME The mistaken beliefs that all banks are the same and there is little competition in the lending market could be costing some borrowers thousands of dollars. In fact, in the past 12 months, the differences between lenders have become quite stark and there is now a significant disparity between lenders on interest rates, fees and credit policies. When you make comparisons between lenders, it quickly becomes clear they are not all the same. Borrowers can potentially save thousands of dollars by shopping around for a deal that better suits their needs.

One of the more significant differences between lenders relates to credit policy. How much can be borrowed can also significantly differ between the banks. The difference between lenders on variable and fixed rates appears small, but the variation when applied to a loan warrants borrowers’ attention. The disparity between variable rates from the various lenders is roughly around a quarter of a per cent and for fixed rates it’s roughly half of a per cent, depending on the term. While this doesn’t sound like much of a gap, if we look at, say,

beyond my control... and over the next three years I attempted suicide many times. “After years of counselling, support groups, medication blunders and hopelessness, I was depressed, isolated and sick and that's where God found me again, at 35 years old. “I realised now that we have a God-shaped hole when we are away from Him that nothing, not drugs, not sex, not money nor possessions can ever fill. “Within three months I was celibate and teetotal; within six months I was back at work; within a year I was discharged from all health services and off all medication, and my relationship with my parents was healed and now yields richness into my life. “I have found the peace and the love and the security that I have been searching for all my life.” Church is not just keeping a tradition about God, but it’s knowing and experiencing his salvation and power in our lives. That is why Christ came to earth, and we celebrate His birth at Christmas. “He is the reason for the season.” From all the ministers and churches have a Happy Christmas and a blessed new year GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

We’ve just had Sam Kneen, a young man aged 19, speak last Sunday at our church about how his life has been radically changed and transformed. From a life of drugs and alcohol he is now holding a permanent job in the building trade and experiencing a new freedom not driven and controlled by addictions. Jesus said; “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free”. When people find God’s truth in their lives they experience an incredible freedom and liberty. I was reading the other day about a woman called Valerie who said: “At 14, following years of horrific abuse and neglect, I turned my back on God, wondering how an all-knowing, loving Father could punish an innocent child so harshly. “At 19, I got into drinking, casual sex and destructive relationships that burned my mind and broke my heart. I started over-drinking, overdoing and overdosing on a regular basis. “At 28, I had a complete nervous breakdown, spending time in the local psychiatric ward where I was possessed, tormented and attacked by forces

PET Mat ters COMMUNITY RECYCLING INC

Recycling and the Festive Season

Christmas is coming fast and so are the visitors. Now is the time to organise your recycling bins or bags, compost area and old items you want to recycle before they arrive. Collect a few cardboard boxes or bags and place them in the garage or somewhere out of the way, use a marking pen and write on the boxes – paper/cardboard; plastic bottles; ally tins; steel tins; unwanted items for recycling. When your visitors arrive show them where the recycled item goes and you won’t have to double handle the waste. When you open the cans they will go directly into the steel box/bag. In the kitchen have a large container with a lid for food scraps and your regular bin for general rubbish. Empty the bin into your compost area. If your neighbour has a compost area and you don’t, maybe they will be happy to accommodate your scraps also as long as there is no dairy, meat, onions or lots of citrus. You should have plenty of space in the bin this Christmas. Things to remember: • Place any plastic items (toys, plastic bags, containers etc in a bag and bring it up to the Resource Recovery Centre as these items are recycled, (but you can’t put them into the yellow lid recycle bin). • Flatten cardboard boxes – we also put old books and magazines into the paper / cardboard cage. • Separate your recyclable party items – have a bin for glass bottles, one for cans, one for plastic bottles, and one for steel. That way your guests separate the items as they celebrate and you will save when taking your rubbish to the Resource Recovery Centre. • Place old clothing in the orange bins on site. • Bring in items you want to recycle – toys, bikes, china etc. We are open Boxing Day, so we’ll see you then. MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM MANAGEMENT AND STAFF AT THE BEERWAH and WITTA RESOURCE RECOVERY CENTRES. Have a Safe, Happy and Merry Christmas. P.S. Don’t forget to check out the Library Wall the Public Art is made from Recycled Items from your local Resource Recovery Centre

Holidaying and our Pets

The festive season is upon us and whilst some of us suffer a temporary condition of agoraphobia avoiding the holiday chaos others bravely venture out… Our pets are none the wiser and we as their carers have a responsibility to make sure they are well cared for whilst we are holidaying. This could be through a boarding kennel or cattery, a bribed family member/friend who will pet sit or newer to the communities are professional ‘Pet Nannies’ who will either take your pet into their home or visit your home a number of times each day to ensure your pet is well cared for in your absence. Check out this website for sunshine coast based Pet Minding/Boarding facilities: http://www.mysunshinecoast.com.au/business/ category/dog-boarding-kennels-pet-sitting,474 If you choose to board your dog or cat in a facility there are specific requirements for vaccinations. It is a good idea to check with the facility at least three weeks prior to arriving. Immunity from vaccines is not fully developed until at least two weeks following the injection. Generally the minimum vaccination for dogs is a ‘C5’ which includes a Kennel Cough

with Graeme Lean

Vaccination, and for cats a ‘F3’ vaccination. Ask your local vet if you are unsure what vaccination your pet has had. For those who decide to take their pet(s) on holiday here are some points to consider: You will be restricted on places that you can visit and / or stay. But don’t despair here are some websites listing dog / pet friendly accommodation: http://www.holidayingwithdogs.com.au/ http://www.doggyholiday.com/ http://www.petplaces.com.au/ Does your pet travel well? A stressed car sick dog is not fun for passengers or the dog. Please remember do not leave your pet(s) unattended in a vehicle; the confines of a vehicle can heat up dramatically causing distress and in some cases death within a matter of minutes.

Drive safe and Happy Holidaying and have a safe and Merry Christmas! From the Team at Graeme Lean & Associates Veterinary Clinics ASSOCIATES GRAEME LEAN &VETERINARIANS

Plant of the season The Aussie Christmas Tree

By Simon Smith from Go Green Rainforest Nursery, Steve Irwin Way, Glenview

The holiday season is upon us and it’s time to put up the good old Christmas tree and adorn it with ornaments. Many of us pull out a plastic tree from a dusty old box in the shed that resembles an exotic conifer but this year could be your chance to go with a living native tree. There are many excellent Australian native alternatives that resemble the plastic Christmas tree. Arguably the best is the Daintree Pine – Gymnastoma australianum. This living fossil’s ancestors would have seen the passing of the dinosaurs and the formation of our Great Southern Land. Fossil records show the Daintree Pine has been around approximately 50 million years – since the time of Gondwana. Today, it is found in only a handful of small sites in the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park. The Daintree Pine is not actually a pine at all but a primitive member of the Casuarina (or She-oak) family. The female flowers are red to pink and they are followed by fruits resembling Casuarina cones. It is a very attractive bushy plant which maintains a lovely conical shape that provides great habitat for small nesting birds. In the ground it grows to approximately 3m to 6m high and 2m wide and prefers full sun to semi-shade in a well drained situation. Other great native species to consider are Kauri Pine, Bunya Pine, Hoop Pine, Plum Pine, Bribie Island Pine or even one of our local Casuarina species. The great thing about all these plants is they are long lived in pots. And if you have room in your garden you can plant them out when they

become too big to provide habitat and food for native wildlife. If you would like to try a living Aussie Xmas tree this year then drop in and see Simon and Mel at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, Steve Irwin Way, Glenview.

Why is regular servicing of an airconditioner important? Cleaning of filters is essential for preventing compressor failure. Not cleaning your system means you could be breathing spores from your dirty airconditioner that cause allergies and asthma. A 1940’s Wirraway, flown in from Adelaide, has been acquired by the Queensland Air Museum as a memorial to Queenslander Philanthropist John Villiers. It is the first aircraft acquired by the Museum to fly into Caloundra Airport. The Queensland Air Museum is a not-for-profit society dedicated to preserving Australia’s Aviation Heritage. It is located at Caloundra Airport. It has over 40 complete aircraft, and a vast collection of memorabilia. It is open to visitors from 10.00am to 4.00pm every day except Christmas Day. Entry fees go toward running costs, maintaining the collection, restorations and acquisitions.

Mobile website gets the hits

TransLink’s new mobile phone compatible website has enabled commuters to have easyto-read public transport information at their fingertips while on the move. About 63 per cent of users have been accessing the site to use the TransLink journey planner to help plan their public transport journey. The site can also be used to quickly find timetables, service disruptions and updates, public transport fares, information on go card top up locations and also includes a feedback section. The mobile site works on most webenabled mobile phones made in the last five years, although over 61 per cent of devices used to access the site in the first three months were iPhones. Access the mobile TransLink website at: mobile. translink.com.au or visit www.translink.com.au

Sunshine Coast Council has launched the 44 Locality Snapshots which have been created to understand and celebrate the vibrant and diverse communities that make up the region. The Locality Snapshots combine local knowledge with population statistics, maps, photos, and key community spaces and places, telling a story about the character and identity of each of the 44 local areas across the Sunshine Coast. The snapshots are now available on council's website and in hard copy format from council’s libraries and customer service centres. The snapshots feature important local information from a number of recent council surveys including Community Neighbourhood Survey 2010, Sunny Coast Youth Survey 2010 and Creative Communities Survey 2010. The Locality Snapshots will form background information for key council planning documents including the Community Plan, new planning scheme and Place Making Charter, as they support people-based planning. The snapshots have many uses including school assignments, visitor information, local business planning, grant applications and general community use. More information is also available on council's Community Profile website. For information on the project, contact Council’s Community Planning and Strategy Manager at commpartnerships@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au DECEMBER 1 2010 |

Barbeque We had a lovely afternoon at our social barbeque and junior break-up on Sunday, November 14. The children enjoyed some games and the grand finale was water-bombing the coach Ray and his assistant Carolyn. It was lovely to see the kids enjoying themselves and hopefully will be back next year for some more tennis. Thanks to the mums and dads who helped cook the barbeque and clean up afterwards. AGM Our AGM was also held on November 14 with some of our junior parents showing an interest in the running of our club. We need more input from our members to keep the club heading in the right direction. Our long serving Secretary, Jo Watson, stepped down from her position after spending five years on the committee. We thank Jo for all of her tireless work she has down for the club, especially the juniors, during her time as Secretary. Unfortunately this position was not filled at our AGM so would like someone to think about nominating for this position. It can be most rewarding when you put in so much effort and achieve results especially

when the club receives grants that they apply for. The other positions are the same as in 2010 – President Ray Semmens, Treasurer Candace Dell, Vice President Piet Geurts, Junior Coordinator Carolyn Forrer and Publicity Officer Jenny Morris. This will be my last report for this year so I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and wish to thank the GCNews for all their support during the year with our publicity.

Tuesday, November 23 was our combined Presidents Day for Rosemay Roderick and Steve (Yorkie) Manston. We had four visiting Clubs, Maleny, Palmwoods, Woombye and Caloundra. Many thanks to those Clubs for attending and making it such a wonderful day. The winners came off the cards and were spread across the board. Raffle winners were Chris Mellon, Teresa Scarffe and Gwen Henderson. We would like to thank Julie and Hilda for their help. A special day for Julie as she announced her engagement to Rick. Best wishes to you both. Friday winners were Frank Kelly and James Sammon, 2nd Eileen Pierce and Tony Millerick and 3rd Hilda and Rod Burgess. Saturday saw the Final of the mixed fours played. The scores were locked at 24 all so another end was played. Fortune swayed to and fro until Ray Oldfield took the kitty in to the ditch for a one point win. Congratulations to Ray and Lucy Oldfield and Jo and Nev Littler. The losers were Horst Jonscher, Judy Walker, Lloyd Walker and Ede Clark. We didn’t play well enough.
