As the sun shone last week, the news that there will soon be bulldozers on site at Beerwah Sportsground was a sure sign the festive season was well and truly in full swing in Glasshouse Country. Sunshine Coast Council and the State Government have announced they are set to start work on a safer vehicle access to the facility. Division 1 Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the new 500 metre stretch of road would help alleviate traffic flow dilemmas around the entrance to the sporting grounds. “This is about providing safety and peace of mind to all users of the Beerwah sporting facility,” she said. A 500 metre sealed access from Roberts Road running south and parallel to the rail line, under the new rail overpass and into the sports grounds is now planned for construction.” Cr Grosskreutz said the $850,000 project would be jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads. “Construction on the new access road will start before Christmas and is likely to be complete by Easter next year,” she said. “With many important community and sporting events planned for the Beerwah Sportsground in 2011, it is very reassuring that the facility will have a much safer access point for people travelling to and from the venue.”

Good neighbours For the past four years, Beerwah locals Rob and Joy Haese have been giving up their spare time to help out at Eden in Glasshouse. They’ve found the experience rewarding, especially getting to know so many people with such colourful experiences to share, so it came as a complete surprise to them when they were nominated, and won, the inaugural Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch Good Neighbour Award. Proudly sponsored by GC News, the award, presented by the Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch, recognises those in the local community who go out of their way to help their ‘neighbours’, and fellow residents.

Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch's Sheila Williams, left, and Ron Stocks, right, with Rob and Joy Haese, centre From driving buses, cooking barbeques, running weekly bingo, hoy and cards games to a range of other activities from anywhere from two to four days a week, Rob and Joy say they really enjoy the interaction with the residents at Eden. “If you’ve had a fortunate life like Rob and I have, we feel its good to be able to give something back,” Joy said. “Older people generally tend to be undervalued, but we’ve found the residents at Eden have just so much to offer, they have all this life experience and wonderful stories to share,” she said. Rob, who is also the Treasurer of Friends of Eden, which raises money to buy items to enhance the lifestyle of the residents of the facility, said a very supportive and cooperative administration also made the pair’s volunteering experience all the more rewarding. Coordinator of Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch, Ron Stocks, said Rob and Joy are the epitome of selfless volunteering. “Theirs is not a one-off or casual encounter, but a commitment to serving the people at Eden, and the community at large,” Ron said.

Ron said the Good Neighbour Award, which the group kicked off earlier this year, had been really successful as a way of highlighting the good things that happen in the local neighbourhood. “So often today we are readily confronted with the horrible and evil that is so easily highlighted, so it's great to be able to acknowledge and celebrate the good in our community,” he said. Each month, deserving members of the local community are selected as the monthly winner of the Good Neighbour Award, with all monthly winners then considered by the Neighbourhood Watch committee for the ultimate recognition, in being awarded the annual Good Neighbour Award, and having their name engraved on a perpetual shield. The Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch meets bi-monthly, on the first Monday of the month, at 7.30pm in the meeting room at the Beerwah Library. For more information, contact the Secretary, Sheila Williams, on 5439 0520. The first meeting for 2011 will be Monday, February 7, 2011. Beerwah embraces recycling at Christmas Make sure you don’t miss out on the unique, holiday themed piece of public artwork now on display at the Beerwah Library. The art piece was constructed out of recycled materials such as corrugated iron, mini orb, timber, conduit, kitchen sink and paint at the local Resource Recovery Centre thanks to Terry, Trish, Jacob and Bob.

The team at the Centre have also constructed a large Christmas Tree, also made from corrugated iron, chains, sinks, styro boxes etc. The market has sold out of recycled Christmas Trees ($1.00, $2.00 and $5.00) at the moment, but you never know when one will come in. Maybe next holiday season we’ll see more recycled displays constructed by the community!

Men’s Shed wraps up a busy year

After a successful inaugural year, Menshed members held their first Christmas Party on December 15 at the Resource Recovery Centre. The following day, they presented to Beerwah Library with two toy library cupboards the Menshed team had made for the library’s toys. The cupboards were built using all recycled materials. Bob McLean, from Menshed and Community Service Director said the members feel pretty good to see their work helping the community. “The guys have done a great job. It has been a good inaugural year, we’re averaging 19 guys every week, which is excellent, and we’re getting new people all the time. The formation of the Glasshouse Country Menshed is a terrific achievement for the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains - this was a significant outcome for this Rotary year.”

For more photos of the Menshed Christmas Party, and other local Christmas celebrations, see the Out and About photos on the Christmas pages, 22-23 and 26-27

We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

A decade of prayer Mrs Nessie Pratten and Jordan Wright of Glass House Mountains were selected as oldest and youngest congregation members to cut Glasshouse Country Uniting Church’s tenth anniversary cake on Sunday December 12. After an amazing rain-free outdoor meal and entertainment the night before, guest preacher at the Sunday Service was the Moderator Rev Bruce Johnson, who spoke about the church being a signpost to the world, touching people’s lives in such a way that they know they are loved. Phil Smith was a most enthralling guest speaker supplemented with musical items from the congregation and reflections on the past ten years. It was great to look back over GHCUC’s achievements in the last ten years and we now look forward to ‘new beginnings’ for the next decade. The impressive cake was the hard work of Rev George Woodward’s talented wife Bernadette and Elders’ Chairman Ronald Wright, who ingeniously designed, baked and iced it.

Commonwealth Bank’s Christmas deposit It was a deposit of an unusual kind when the Commonwealth Bank Beerwah donated $300.00, along with a Christmas hamper, to the St Vincent De Paul Society Landsborough last week. Branch manager Patty Shaw said the Bank plays an important role in local communities, with the Beerwah branch remaining committed to supporting local initiatives. The St Vincent de Paul Society’s 40,000 members and volunteers work hard to assist people in need and to combat social injustice across the nation. Internationally, the Society operates in 130 countries and has over 950,000 members. “The Commonwealth Bank Beerwah branch is proud to be a part of the Beerwah community and chose to support St Vincent de Paul Society in recognition of their work in the local area. Their value to the community is immeasurable and we are committed to supporting such a worthwhile cause,” Patty said. President of St Vincent de Paul Society Landsborough, Tom Malone, who was on hand to accept the cheque and hamper, said the Beerwah community had really shown the extent of their generous spirit this year, with the cheque from the Commonwealth Bank the second he had collected from the local area that week. He said the number of people seeking genuine assistance was increasing all the time, and the signs were looking like the situation was only going to get worse.

What do you love about Christmas? We all know kids just love opening their presents on Christmas morning, but what are some other things kids love about Christmas? We decided to ask some Year 1 students from Glass House Mountains State School.

1 Lucy said, “I love decorating the Christmas tree, I can’t wait to do that. Sometimes we have a star on top and sometimes we have an angel. I like it when all the family comes over because we have lots of fun.”

2

Stefan, who has recently moved here from the Northern Territory, said, “The decorations, the balls, the tree. We decorate the whole house, inside and outside. I’m a bit sad, I thought there’d be snow here because it’s colder here.”

1

5

4 3

Van said, “Having seafood. My favourite is oysters and prawns. We have them for lunch and breakfast and dinner. I like decorating the Christmas tree, it goes up the last of November.”

4 Travis said, “I love that you get candy canes and lollies. We have a big Christmas dinner with chicken and ham.”

5

2

Eva said, “I like putting up the Christmas tree, I help decorate it. We put on mum’s favourite thing, and me and my sister Marley’s favourite is a little princess that will go on the Christmas tree. Lots of people come over, I like seeing everybody.”

3

6 6

Tammin said, “I love spending time with my family, hopping in the pool. We eat lunch all together. I like when mangoes come out at Christmas time.”

They can assist by politely asking uninvited or unruly people to leave. • Arrange parental supervision or the presence of additional adults to help keep trouble to a minimum. • Let your neighbours know about your party in advance, to reduce concerns about parking or noise later. • Keep noise to a minimum, especially after midnight, by looking at the position or direction of your sound system speakers. Excessive noise from your party can be reported to police, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Noise is the most common reason police are called to a party. Police may issue a noise abatement direction (NAD) after receiving a complaint about excessive noise. If another complaint is received within 12 hours of the first, police can seize and remove the property that is producing or contributing to the production of the noise. The seized property can be collected 24 hours later from the nearest police station. • Plan what to do if a guest becomes sick or intoxicated. • Ensure your first aid kit is well stocked and easy to access. • Ensure access to a phone. Have emergency service numbers ready, just in case and taxi company numbers handy to assist with guests getting home safely afterwards. • Encourage parents to collect their children at the end of the party. For an information brochure on the ‘Partysafe’ Program please contact the Beerwah Police Station or click on www.police.qld.gov.au/party .

I’m bored....not!

5. Start a rock collection Think all

There are two words no parent wants to hear during the school holidays: I’m bored. So think like a Scout and ‘be prepared’. Here’s a list of 10 lowcost or no cost fun things to do and discover, all within your own backyard!

1. Backyard Olympics Get a group of kids together and hold your own Olympics. Events can include sprints, relays, shot put (using water-filled balloons), egg and spoon races and more. You can even get the kids to make ‘medals’ out of paper, cardboard or ribbon. 2. Treasure hunt Hide or bury a ‘treasure chest’ (shoe box/old metal biscuit tin etc) in the backyard and leave lots of clues that lead from one spot to another for the kids to decipher. Fill the treasure chest with inexpensive treats such as lollies, chocolates or stickers.

3. All about me Collect magazines, newspapers or brochures and get the kids to make an ‘All About Me’ collage. They can cut out and paste any pictures, words or phrases that show things they like, dislike, favourite colours, heroes, what they want to be when they grow up – anything! 4. Star gazing On a clear night plan a night time backyard picnic and do some star gazing. Even with the naked eye you can see satellites, shooting stars and planets, but if you can bring along binoculars or a telescope, even better.

Doing business James’ Home Services – a local success story

Robert James started washing cars at Caloundra nearly 20 years ago. As his business grew, he saw the potential for home services and now there are more than 400 franchisees throughout Australia. Robert used to regularly wash cars here in the hinterland and has seen massive growth in the area, and believes it will continue. He loves the area so much, he lives in Mooloolah with his wife and family. James’ Home Services growth to a national company is due to a solid, proven business system in the market place, where it counts. When you join James’ you get ongoing support

from your full time business coach, ongoing training, and on-going marketing. Every week there is a national advertising campaign on Channel Seven’s ‘The Morning Show’, which is combined with local advertising. What this means to you is a guarantee of work because of James’ Home Services strong brand awareness in the community. The annual general meeting was held in Caloundra on November 27 which saw the top national business owners in James’ attend. Local winners were Kim McLean Interior House Cleaning Maleny, Janet and Steve Bayliss Interior House Cleaning Little Mountain Central, Angelene and Ian Wood Interior House Cleaning Buderim, and Ivan Woodhouse Lawn and Garden Care Pelican Waters. Every week our national call centre, situated at the head office in Mooloolaba, receives an

enormous amount of calls for people wanting their houses cleaned and lawns mowed. Even with the influx of new franchisees joining, we cannot keep up with the demand. If you are keen to be your own boss with Australia’s premier home services team, call Rhonda James on 1800 1james.

Beerwah Lions

Contributed by Una M Robinson, Publicity Officer

On December 12 at the end of year Christmas celebration, an important presentation was made to auxiliary member, Jan Boyle. Jan has worked for the community in many ways and through Beerwah Lions Club since it was formed in 1967 - her husband Ron is still an active charter member of the Lions Club. The blind cricket matches which have been reported on most years and which by all accounts has seen the Beerwah Lions team win on only one occasion ever is a charity that has been supported by Beerwah Lions Club for almost 30 years. On each visit the auxiliary members cater for the crowd and the visiting players in the way they know how, with lots of great food and drinks and Jan Boyle has been the co-ordinator of this project for 24 years. Jan has decided to resign from this task she has managed so well. The current Lions Auxiliary President. Sharon Loveday, and Lions President, Ken Loveday, honoured Jan with two special presentations in appreciation and for her dedication of this work. One gift was a beautiful bowl, the other was a memento of a mounted blind cricket ball which brought much applause and laughter. These balls are white with a sounding device inside. A big thank you to Jan Boyle.

Glasshouse Country Toastmasters

Contributed by Martine Goedhart On December 9, Glasshouse Country Toastmasters members were under suspicion for the murder of Santa. Two weeks prior to this meeting, our members received an envelope with the description of their character and their whereabouts on the night of the murder. Robert Thompson was the Police Inspector and boy did we get a grilling from him. His cross examination, and unexpected questions, surely made us think on our feet. If you would have joined us on that Thursday morning you could have witnessed Glasshouse Toastmasters at our best, we are indeed a very talented bunch of fun loving and capable people. Taking part in this murder mystery, brought out again a hidden talent in many of us. We often conduct school or community speech craft courses where we can speak on behalf of an organisation, or being judges for the public speaking awards. We all enjoy, and are very capable, in undertaking these activities. You may however think, there are people who are good at those speaking engagements, but that’s not me. WRONG, before we joined Toastmasters, nobody had the faintest idea what we were able to achieve or even had the nerve to speak in public. As soon as you take the first step and come through that door of the hall at the back of the Church of the Rise, you will be greeted by people, who know how you feel and have never looked back. Apart from the self confidence you will gain in speaking up for yourself, there is also a great fellowship. If you like to think of a New Year’s resolution, think of Toastmasters, you won’t regret it. Like to know more? Give Kerry Gillam a call on 5493 0650 or get in touch with Martine Goedhart on 5496 9855. We’d love to hear from you. I hereby take the opportunity to say THANK YOU to our President, Chris Magee, for writing the plot and characters for the Santa Murder Mystery. You are amazing.

Christmas advice

Cadets march with pride

As locals begin preparations for the Christmas season, it’s important to remember to take extra care with food storage and preparations in the hotter summer months. This is an issue all year round with some 5.4 million cases of food poisoning annually, but the warmer weather and the presence of more flies over summer makes it particularly important this time of year to be mindful of food handling rules. Some handy hints include: check that your fridge is running at five degrees Celsius or below, don’t let raw meat and chicken drip onto salads and desserts that won’t be cooked again, don’t leave foods like pizza leftovers on the kitchen bench overnight – instead, once they have stopped steaming, place them in containers in the fridge, make sure sausages and mince are cooked until there is no more pink left in the centre, and make sure you regularly wash your hands and dry them thoroughly before touching food. These simple guidelines will help you avoid being struck down by a dreaded stomach bug. Like most other Sunshine Coast residents, I look forward to the coming Christmas season as it brings with it a chance to put aside the many worldly demands that make our lives so hectic during the year, and it gives us an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the company of our loved ones. Christmas itself can also sometimes be quite frantic, as relatives catch up with each other, dinners are prepared and family gatherings are organised. As a father of two, I am very aware of the tremendous value of simply sharing each other’s company during this holy season – Christmas gives us an opportunity to spend quality time with those who are special to us, and to reaffirm our dedication and love for each other. I am sure that it goes without saying that we should be mindful of the reason for the season: Christmas is a season to be jolly but also a time to remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and a time to pay consideration to those in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves. I’d also like to take this opportunity to give my special thanks to everyone who has supported me during 2010. My wife Inge and I wish you, all my constituents, a restful, enjoyable and Holy Christmas and an extremely prosperous and successful 2011. As always, I look forward to again working hard throughout the year ahead to deliver strong representation for my constituents.

Anyone seeing the passing out parade of the Caloundra Air Cadets and Naval Cadets last week would realise what a fine body of young men and women we have to invest in our future. There was clearly an element of pride in the Cadets as they marched with purpose and precision. The hours they put in preparing for the Parade certainly reflected the teamwork both groups have built up and teamwork is essential in today’s workforce as well as family life. The Air and Naval Cadets are a part of Caloundra’s fabric and apart from learning the skills associated with both organisations, the Cadets also learn life skills, the value of community, and moral integrity. In short, the training they have received up until today equips them to be outstanding citizens in any community – but hopefully most will stay in ours. There were many proud parents at the passing out parade and their pride was well justified. I hope many realised that they themselves would have played an integral part in their kids’ success by supporting their decision to join the Cadets. In a time when so much of the world is plagued by uncertainly and trouble and kids in our own communities face a variety of temptations on a daily basis, these parents can stand tall in the knowledge their kids are armed with all the attributes needed to be role models. I’ve always been an advocate of the Air and Naval Cadets and the traditions they uphold. The Royal Australian Navy celebrates 100 years next year while the RAAF has been crossing our skies for 89 years. Let’s hope the tradition continues and these fine young men and women have the opportunity to stand one day as proud parents at the passing out parade of their own kids. What an achievement that would be.

Congratulations to the following successful applicants from the Glasshouse Region: Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre $7500.00 for a Veggie Village; Friends of Beerwah Library $5952.00 for new computers for the Library; Rotary Club of the Glasshouse Mountains $6500.00 for the Sustainability and Garden Expo; Friends of Bankfoot House $4200.00 for Bankfoot House Open Day; Glasshouse & District Little Athletics Centre Inc. $3450.00 for various Sports Equipment; Beerwah & District Junior Rugby League $2834.00 for furniture for the Clubhouse. The next round of Councils major grants for the Community Grants Program close on March 15, 2011. Please contact my office on 5420 8987, if you would like further information.

Where has the year gone? Come to think of it, where has the decade gone? We have certainly had another busy year here at Council, but we are starting to turn a corner as far as all the amalgamation processes are concerned. In 2011, residents will see more and more of the results rolling out “on the ground through increased services. For now, this is the time to be among family and friends as we re-charge our batteries in preparation for the New Year. May I wish you all a very happy and very safe holiday break and I look forward to talking to you in 2011. If you have any Council queries over the festive season please call Customer Service on 5475 7272 or if your concern is with Unity Water please call 5475 7270.

Festive greetings On behalf of Council and myself, I wish you a joyful and safe festive season and a happy and prosperous New Year. Council offices will close early on Friday, December 24 at 2.00pm. Offices will be closed on all public holidays (Monday and Tuesday December 27-28, 2010, and Monday, January 3, 2011). Offices will remain open on during December on Wednesday 29, Thursday 30 and Friday 31. I look forward to working closely with the community again in 2011.

Powerful New Year’s resolutions

Landsborough Pub Pub Landsborough

The solar eclipse on Tuesday, January 4 is also the New Moon in Capricorn, the best time for making your New Year’s resolutions. The solar eclipse gives this New Moon added intensity, so any resolutions you make in the 24 hours following the New Moon will be especially powerful. The New Moon is exact at 7.02pm. Capricorns are goal-oriented and have a reputation for determination, it is after all the sign of the goat, slowly but steadily making its way to the top of the mountain. Wherever you have Capricorn in your chart is where you are likely to be goal-focused in your life, yet this eclipse indicates that changes are now likely in this area. If your birthday falls close to this date, or if you have 13 degrees Capricorn strong in your chart, this is the beginning of a highly significant new cycle in your life. A general warning for everyone, eclipses are associated with times of major change. Be particularly careful in the couple of weeks leading up to this eclipse and don’t take any unnecessary risks, eclipses demand respect. Venus goes into Sagittarius on Friday, January 7, bringing a playful enthusiasm to relationships after the emotional turmoil of Scorpio. Connections with others seem lighter and more fun now, as you are more ready to engage in adventures and exploration. The Full Moon falls at the very end of Cancer on Thursday, January 20 at 7.21am. This is likely to be a nurturing time, focused on home and family, yet with a sense of excitement too as new possibilities beckon. This Full Moon invites us to find the balance between work and family, between material achievement and deep emotional connection, and to loosen our hold on our attachment to the past. Have a happy and prosperous New Year!

Let’s face it, after stuffing yourself silly on eight times the required calorie intake, four times the usual alcohol consumption and then getting the bill for how much the whole Christmas festival has actually cost, it does makes it a little hard to be merry once it’s all over. It is possible to avoid the Christmas spending hangover with planning and the willingness to do things a little differently. Christmas hams are great but how many of us end up with ham for breakfast, lunch and dinner until New Year? Do you have friends or family members who would be happy to share the cost of a large ham to divide up before the big day? Do the same with other items that can be bought in bulk and divided up such as fruit, cartons of drinks, giant sized packs of nuts, chocolates or other nibbles. Remember, most people visit lots of relatives over the holidays and eat at every stop. If you know most of your guests will already be ‘full’ by the time they visit you, why not just plan a ‘mini’ feast. If you are the one who usually caters for a big family get-together but are finding the costs difficult, don’t be shy, ask everyone to bring a plate of something to share. Most importantly - don’t shop with the credit card. It’s far too easy to forget the budget when using the plastic. Whatever you are doing this Christmas, be safe, be happy and be wise. Merry Christmas.

With the festive season in full swing, many people are looking to head out to pubs and clubs for the party season - Queensland Health is reminding revellers to keep their drinks safe. The warning comes after 10 women in Darwin nightclubs in the Northern Territory recently reporting getting their drinks spiked. Kevin Lambkin, Preventative Health Directorate Queensland Health urged people, particularly women, to enjoy the party season with common sense. “Unfortunately drink spiking is a reality, always keep an eye on your drinks and make sure you tell your mates where and with whom you are at all times. It can often be very difficult to tell whether someone has been given a sedative in their drink or whether they have simply had too much alcohol. To avoid spending Christmas in the Hospital Emergency Department, be extra vigilant by consuming less alcohol and keeping yourself and friends safe by not accepting glasses of drinks, or drinks that are already open. Signs of potential drink spiking include: drowsiness or light headedness, feeling confused or disorientated, difficulty speaking or slurring your words, loss of balance and finding it hard to move, lowered inhibitions, paranoia, amnesia or a ‘black-out’ of events, feeling like you are floating above your body, visual problems such as blurred vision, nausea and vomiting.

Seasons Greetings from GMAN Nursery My apologies to those people who have been trying to contact me for plants over the past week, while I have been enjoying myself on Norfolk Island. The nursery plants thrived while I was away and sales will continue until Christmas Eve and again after Boxing Day. We will continue our twenty percent discount through to the end of December, so be quick to get your plants before the New Year. Supplies of Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines will be our best ever in 2011, so plant a vine or two for the endangered butterfly. We were excited to hear that vines planted less than two years ago now have butterfly caterpillars happily chewing their way through the leaves. This is the first sighting of butterfly larvae on this property very close to Glass House town. GMAN now has a new brochure recording all the information about the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. Make sure you pick one up with your vines or they will be available at our plant sale in January, along with the vines. On behalf of GMAN and the nursery team, I would like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout 2010, and wish everyone in Glass House Country a safe and happy holiday season. Hope to see you in the New Year. Gwen, phone 5493 0029 for plant sales.

Christmas messages from Glasshouse Martin Cran

Heinrich Rusterholz Seventh Day Adventist Church Another year is gone and we are approaching Christmas. What is it about Christmas that makes this time special? For many it is a time to spend with family and friends, for the others it is the busiest time of the year. Others again find it is just hard work as a lot of domestic violence happens at this time because of the large amount of alcohol being consumed. This of course affects whole families and especially children. So there are a lot of messages out there for Christmas. Now for Christians it is also a time to remember the greatest gift. The origin of Christmas has of course nothing to do with Christianity as no one knows the exact birth date of Jesus. However it is most likely to be September / October. Christmas goes back to a pagan festival of the resurrection of the sun god, in the northern hemisphere where the sun is at its lowest at that time of the year. Later on Christians used this to say it was the birthday of Christ. Today can we remember the greatest gift ever? Of course we can. This is the gift God gave us in Jesus that is, his birth, his life and death and resurrection. Through this gift, people throughout the centuries have been affected and changed. Drunkards became sober, criminals became changed people who no longer want their old way of life, families have been brought together. So this gift has affected millions of people who now live a better and fuller life. If others would realise Jesus can make a difference in their lives, we would not have the same problems we face now. Further, as the whole history has been changed because of Jesus we count the years from his time eg 2010. So what are we pondering on as we edge closer to Christmas? Is it the greatest gift for you or are you facing the many other issues?

Every year we drive our four kids round the coast looking for Christmas lights. We love these displays of beautiful, colourful, lights that look amazing against the dark backdrop of night. This reminds me of Jesus who said in John 8:12 “I am the light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness but have the light of life”. Jesus’ light shines in two directions, firstly to light up our sin to show our need for Jesus the Saviour. Secondly, to shine a way back to God. Jesus said in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” As you enjoy the electrical lights this season take some time to consider Jesus, the Light of Life. Mooloolah Valley Church thanks you for your support this year and wishes you all a safe, relaxing and joyful holiday and God’s blessing into the year ahead.

Ken Goodger When we were young, Christmas was always full of excitement and anticipation. While those feelings are still there somewhat, as an Anglican Priest there is also a sense of apprehension at what is to come. I’ve never been able to convince the congregations I’ve served that I should get Christmas off like most people do, so I’ll have to take a deep breath on December 24 and hope to still be conscious to watch the Test Match at the MCG on Boxing Day. In the midst of shopping and gifts and excesses of many other kinds, I hope everyone can take some time to stop and think about what Christmas means to each of us. Even if God doesn’t come into the equation for you, I hope you can find something of the joy and hope that Christmas is really all about. Try it, you might just find it brings back that excitement and anticipation again.

Rod Jobe Christmas time is a special time to celebrate the birth of Christ. We will often say in church “Happy Birthday Jesus”. I love presents at Christmas time, in fact anytime they are always well received. This year was a special year for me personally when I had my 55th birthday. I was born on the 5.5.55 and to celebrate, I got a new dirt bike to ride to Cape York with five other guys. It was a great adventure and a special birthday present. My birthday present however fades into insignificance when compared to God’s great gift of His son. Jesus came to give us Eternal Life and nothing on earth can ever compare to this gift. “For God loved the world so much that he gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life”. John 3:16

Pastor Brendan

Did you know that through the incarnation of Christ, celebrated at Christmas, we not only learn of God’s deep desire for a relationship with humans but we also learn what God expects of His followers. Jesus “incarnated” to become like those He wanted to reach. He became fully human to reach humans, and then went on to engage with every kind of people, group, race, gender, socio-economic status, it didn’t matter to Christ. He heard the stories of those who were outcasts of society or religion, then showed them that the Kingdom of heaven was especially for them. While He never sinned himself, He spent time and showed love to those “sinners” normally shunned by the religious. So the question is, “How are we as a Church going with this same mission?” Are we prepared to participate in the “incarnational mission” to those outside of our normal circles of people, as Jesus did? Do we go and serve, or expect the world to come to us? Have a Blessed Christmas.

Three brief Christmas snippets from my life. Some years ago I attended a Christmas church service. I remember little of what was said and done in that service but I do remember the old preacher saying, “By the time you get to my age you know you need a Saviour.” When I lived in Jabiru I was asked to speak at the Katherine School of the Air ‘break up’ one Christmas. I will never forget the instruction I was given by the head teacher. She said to me, “We don’t want anything religious but we want the real meaning of Christmas.” I spent some years working with a community of people who were very poor. We were having a Christmas service. Many of the community were in attendance. We were about to take up an offering when one of the leaders asked, “Where are the envelopes for the poor people?” These poor people had put aside money to help other poor people at Christmas. What is Christmas really about? It is all of the above and more. Merry Christmas.

In the Bible we read that God so loved the world that he gave his only son. This is the greatest message we can hear and it is extremely good news. The fact is that without the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus there would be no hope for the human race. It is only because this happened in history that there is hope of a future life, hope of a resurrection, hope of wiping your slate clean hope of eternal life. Hope of really living in a perfect world without disease, sickness and death. This hope is better than any of us can imagine. It is beyond our wildest dreams of what God has prepared for us. And that is exactly where Jesus comes in. Without him, there is no hope of ever realising the aforementioned. If we put our trust in him then this can become reality. It can start with each one of us right now if we are willing to trust. This is what we can remember this Christmas.

Fr Stan Griffith When we recall the events of Jesus’ birth at Bethlehem, the Gospels speak eloquently of the Peace and Joy that accompanied this wonderful sign of God’s intervention into the affairs of men and women. The remembrance of Christmas by Christians has been of a time of peace and harmony, of sharing and giving, of festivity and family fun. For many Australians it is a time of relaxation and holidays spent in one of the wonderful places that dot our country so abundantly. While this is part of what Christmas is about, let us remember that it only has its fullest meaning when we celebrate the wonderful event of the birth of Jesus. While I extend the best of Christmas wishes to all, I exhort you to stop for a short while to remember the great events that are the reason for our celebrations. A happy and holy Christmas to all.

Rev Chris Johnson Christmas time is a time to reconnect. We send cards to family and friends, some of whom we have not seen for a long time but we want them to know we are thinking of them and value their friendship. Christmas is also a great opportunity to reconnect with God. We remember how God came and visited us in the person of Jesus so that we could reconnect with Him. We would like to encourage you to make the most of this Christmas and reconnect with family and friends and, above all, God. On behalf of Glasshouse Country Baptist Church, have a great and Blessed Christmas.

It’s easy to be content with the hustle and bustle of the season without ever experiencing the miracle of Christmas but “The Most Wonderful Time of The Year” is nothing short of a miracle! A baby conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, His birth announced by angels, welcomed by shepherds and wise men bearing gifts led by a star. The miracle of Christmas is that God’s plan for every life is personal. God has made a way for us through His Son – ultimately the true miracle of Christmas. We’d love to invite you to celebrate Christmas with us at 6.30pm Christmas Eve for a one hour service at the Glasshouse Hall. Join us for great Christmas music, an awesome Christmas message and all the excitement of the season. May the miracle of Christmas continue to amaze us with God’s love. Merry Christmas!

Mike Turner As Christmas time draws near, it is interesting how we all think and feel about it. Some people find Christmas really stressful, others love all the presents and getting new goodies and for others it is a big social time of year. Some like to do some sort of charity work for those less fortunate and then there are those who don’t really celebrate Christmas at all. At the heart of Christmas is the story of Jesus Christ who came to the world as a baby. The bible talks about Jesus as the son of God and how He saved all humankind from our sins – selfishness that separates us from an amazing, massive, holy God. Life is so precious. You are so valuable. Don’t let this Christmas be just another Christmas. God is right there, all you need to do is pray. He thinks the world of you and gave the best present just for you... his son Jesus.

Trains, not all bad news

Go public this Christmas

I hope in all the complaints about the new timetable, its good points will not be overlooked. The biggest one for me is that we will now have through trains stopping at Eagle Junction, thus providing easier access to the Airtrain. I've been campaigning for this ever since the Airtrain began! Also, there are more trains, including an extra one from Gympie. Sheila Williams Beerwah

From 26 December to 9 January all public buses across the Coast will be free. Jump aboard and away you go.

COUNCIL MEETINGS

Congratulations to the ‘Boneheads’ in Council, (if Bonehead is too harsh how about ‘incompetent decision makers’), that have put a stop on future kerbside cleanups. They have just doubled the procession of weekend vehicles heading out into the forestry to dump their old televisions, lounge chairs, fridges, building material waste and who knows what other rubbish onto the side of tracks and roads throughout the greater Beerburrum Forest area. So congratulations, Council, to contributing to what is already a major problem in our area. Oh, that’s right – the forestry land is owned by the State Government, so it won’t be Council’s problem! Perhaps if this rubbish was dumped at the back of a councillor’s property, they might reconsider. Name withheld Beerburrum

We would like to take this opportunity to thank this awesome community for the great support given to the school chaplaincy at Beerwah High School - this full time service for students, families and teachers wouldn’t exist without your generosity. My wife Donna and I would like to add that we really appreciate the love and support shown to us as a family. We have been truly blessed by some great individuals and groups who genuinely care about us. Thank you so much. We hope you and your families are blessed and have a great Christmas. Peachester History Committee

The School Picnic

There has been some debate recently about whether students should be required to attend on the last day of the school year. In earlier generations this was never a consideration – everyone looked forward to breaking-up day and the annual school picnic. In small country towns this was the opportunity for a community gathering with children, parents, teachers and other local residents all involved. Many readers will remember the anticipation, then the excitement on the day. Ice creams and cake, book prizes, folk dances, and sporting events like three-legged races with parents participating! The Nambour Chronicle archives record many such functions at schools in the Glasshouse Country area. Peachester, December 1905: “... parents and children assembled at the local school grounds to mark the breaking-up event for the Christmas vacation. The committee had arranged a supply of some thirty books for prizes, and also a sufficient quantity of fruit and lollies. Tea was supplied on the ground whilst the parents among themselves supplied the necessary cake and sandwiches. Of the Committee, Messrs. Caswell, Geo. Page and W. Francis were present and did all they could throughout the day to assist in making the turnout a success.” Coochin Creek (now Beerwah), December 1914: “A large gathering of parents and friends and about 50 children assembled on the occasion of the annual picnic of the Coochin Ck School ... The usual prizes for proficiency were presented to the scholars by Mr J. Simpson, universally spoken of as the father of the district and respected by every child. An interesting piece of patriotism, synonymous with the spirit of the times, was the erecting by the committeemen and old boys of the school of a high flagstaff. Then while the children, who had been carefully trained for the event, stood at the salute, a large Union Jack presented by the Under Secretary for Education, was run up by the teacher, and fluttered 60 feet above the heads of the enthusiastic crowd. Three cheers for ‘Our King and Country’ were called for by Mr Allan Ferris, the indefatigable secretary, and were heartily given. The children then sang ‘God Save the King’ and numerous patriotic songs. The chairman, in an interesting speech, complimented the children on their proficiency, and the teacher, Miss Sim, on the careful training of her young charges. Mr C. A. Weyer endorsed the chairman’s remarks and expressed his pleasure at the general progress of the district apparent on every hand. A very jolly dance at night terminated the proceedings.”

The theme for the Rotary Calendar 2012 is ‘Fauna with the Glasshouse Mountains’”. Fauna is explained in the dictionary as “all animal life in a particular region”. Judges will be looking for images portraying the Glasshouse Mountains in the photograph. Deadline for ALL entries is May 2011. Get a head start during the Christmas holidays and start snapping! Merry Christmas from Rotary Club of the Glasshouse Mountains Inc.

Raffle Results

Glasshouse Country RSL Sub Branch Friday night raffles: Lucky Door - D87 Lloyd C, Meat Tray Black Clubs C34 - Ray L, Fruit/Veg Tray - Black Clubs C54 – Warren, Fruit/Veg Tray - C02 - Pam. Landsborough Masonic Lodge, drawn December 11: Ticket 22 for the IGA food vouchers; Ticket 79 for the Top Shop meat vouchers; Ticket 320 for the ornamental plants from Sunshine Plants Nursery. Our sincere thanks to all those who contributed to our raffle and to our suppliers. This year Glass House Country Care will be one of the beneficiaries from our charity work.

This time of year, many of us go away for a well-earned break, and the last thing we want to be thinking about is possible problems in the backyard. It’s no fun sipping a cheeky little chardonnay in a boutique winery at the Hunter Valley and remembering that you’ve forgotten to drop the budgie off at Aunty Doris’s place. Here’s just a sample of things that you need to remember to do before you head off. If you haven’t booked the pet into a ‘pet motel’, you’re probably too late. Try a friendly neighbour or relative to look after Fido/Fluffy/Tweetie. If you’ve organised for someone to feed and check on your pet at your home, register with the RSPCA’s ‘Home Alone’ program in case anything happens. In the garden … if you’re away for only a week, a soil wetter will make sure that your pot plants are really well drenched. You can even spray the plant with an anti-transpiration product that cuts down on water loss from the leaves. It won’t hurt the plant, it’s safe for animals and the plant won’t die from lack of water. If it’s longer than a week, you might think about putting in some temporary drip irrigators and a tap timer. Or a good tip is to buy one of those cheap kiddies’ pools, set it up in the shade, put a few inches of water in the bottom and leave your pots in that. The same thing can be done for indoor pots using the bath tub. If your prize garden or lawn needs regular watering, invest in a good quality tap timer — you can get some good battery operated ones these days – and set up some sprinklers. Or just pay the kid next door to do the watering. While he or

she is at it, pay them to mow the lawn as well. Of course it's always good to check with their parents, who will no doubt be happy as will the Kids who always look for extra pocket money over the holidays. Pack up or secure everything that could blow about in a storm. Being storm-smart is definitely the way to go this summer. Don’t use social networking sites to announce to the world that you’re on your dream holiday. That’s just telling the bad guys that you won’t be home. Make sure that you’ve locked the garden shed. Thieves target garden sheds and garages because they know that expensive gadgets are stored there. Don’t forget to cancel the paper delivery and ask someone to empty your letterbox. Get a pool-guy to do your pool maintenance while you’re away. The small cost is better than having to deal with a green pool the first day home. Here’s a gardening joke I’ll be telling at the dinner table this ChristmasA gardener purchased an old, long-time abandoned property with plans to turn it into an award winning garden. The garden beds were grown over with weeds, the greenhouse was falling apart, and the chook run was in ruins. During his first day of working on the property, the town priest stops by to bless the man's work, saying, "May you and God work together to make this the garden of your dreams!" A few months later, the priest stops by again to call on the new owner. Lo and behold, it's a completely different place. The greenhouse is completely rebuilt and in excellent condition, there are plenty of chooks happily scratching in a well-fenced run, and the gardens are filled with flowers and veggies. "Amazing!" the preacher says. "Look what God and you have accomplished together!" “Sorry Father, but I tried to let God just give me advice rather than physically help,” replied the gardener. “Why do you say that?” asks the priest in dismay. "Well Reverend," says the man, "remember what the garden was like when God was working it alone!" A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

EDA War Veterans

EDA Central and North Qld Association Inc. wish all veterans and their wives/carers a very Happy Christmas and a great and, most importantly, healthy 2011. President Geoff, 0431 786 555, (07) 4194 1935.

Christmas survival guide

Look out for your mates this festive season With Christmas almost upon us, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, wishes veterans and their families a safe and happy Christmas and New Year period.

23 Years Experience Any size tree Land Clearing Full Insurance

“I hope that our veterans, serving men and women, ex-service communities and their families enjoy the holiday season and have a well-deserved break,” Mr Snowdon said.

“The festive season is also a time to think of those less fortunate and those who may not be surrounded by family or friends. Christmas can be a lonely time for some in our community, in particular our older veterans.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ (DVA) offices will close at 5.00pm on December 24, 2010 and will re-open at 9.00am Tuesday, January 4, 2011. DVA offices will also be closed for Australia Day on Wednesday, January 26, 2011. During this time, a range of important DVA services will remain open to the veteran community including: Transport—it is recommended transport is booked before the Christmas and New Year period. If it is not booked, transport will need to be paid up-front with reimbursement sought from DVA later; Hospital admissions—doctors can admit DVA patients into hospital and request admissions approval, if required, when DVA re-opens on Tuesday, January 4, 2011; Crisis counselling—VVCS—Veterans and Veterans’ Families Counselling Service offers 24-hour crisis counselling through Veterans’ Line. This service is available toll free on 1800 011 046 to veterans of all conflicts and their families—including members of peace operations; Insurance—help with Defence Services Homes Insurance policy and claim enquiries is available 24 hours a day from Defence Services Homes on 1300 552 662, or visit www.dsh.gov.au

Pension pay days will not be affected by the Christmas and New Year arrangements.

Holiday service for Centrelink customers

Centrelink has made arrangements to ensure customers receive their payments on time over the Christmas–New Year period. Wherever possible, payments will be made on time for customers not required to return a form or report either over the phone or online, however, some customers will be paid earlier than normal if their pay day falls on one of the public holidays during this period.

• Large tree and stump removal • Land Clearance • Palms cleaned or Removed • Tree and Garden Consultations

This isn’t an extra payment, just their normal payment, which they’ll receive early due to the public holidays. Customers who do need to return forms before they are paid should check the reporting date that appears on their form or reporting statement carefully, as they may be able to do so earlier than usual.

Level 5 Aborist with over 25 years experience

Ph: 0459150302

Turf supplies

As the form covers the normal assessment period, customers need to estimate earnings for the full period. If an estimate is not accurate, they can correct it on the next form they complete. Customers have the option to return their form after the end of the assessment period to ensure correct details of their earnings. However, if they choose to do this, then their payment will be delayed. Customers should be aware that the next payment after the holiday period will be on the customer’s normal payment day so people need to budget carefully so the early payment lasts for one or two days extra. Customers who usually report using Online or Phone Self Service can still use these services if they need to report early, although customers who use these services should check their reporting statement carefully to see if their reporting dates have changed over the holidays. All Centrelink offices and call centres will be closed on Monday, December 27, Tuesday, December 28, Monday, January 3 and Wednesday, January 26.

Know the rules for travelling with PBS medicine

Medicare Australia and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) are reminding Christmas travellers to take precautions when carrying Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) medicines overseas or risk fines and prosecution.

“It is illegal to take or send PBS medicine overseas unless it is for personal use by you or someone travelling with you such as your child,” Human Services Portfolio General Manager Hank Jongen said today. “You can avoid unnecessary disruptions to your travel by organising your medicine before you go.

“When packing include a letter from your doctor detailing your medicine, dosages and stating that the medicine is for your personal use. Take only enough medicine to cover the length of your trip and leave the medicine in its original packaging so it can be easily identified.” Head of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Consular area, James Batley, reminded travellers to visit the Smartraveller website in planning their Christmas travel.

“The Smartraveller website should be your first stop for up-to-date travel advice and practical health information”, he said. “Before you go, read the travel advice and check with the embassies of the countries you’re visiting to make sure your medicine is legal there.”

Merry Christmas

Medicare Australia, Australia Post and the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service work together to prevent the illegal exporting of PBS medicine. For more information about travelling with PBS medicine call 1800 500 147 or visit www. medicareaustralia.gov.au
