Landsborough lad wins international Motocross championship Over the weekend, 10-year-old Landsborough local Jett Lawrence took home gold at the 2014 FIM Junior World Motocross Championships in Belgium. Jett won the title of 65cc Junior Motocross World Champion, after competing in two races at the Lierneux track. Jett’s first race saw him passing the likes of Americans Jeremy Ryan and Jett Reynolds to finish first. He started race two in fifth position, but was quick to move into second place - enough to win him his first ever world title. Jett Lawrence was one of six Australians selected by Motorcycling Australia to compete at the World Championships - a list that included three Queenslanders.

Halls Creek or Beerwah East … The final contribution on the Halls Creek / Beerwah East urban development investigation areas is from an urban planning perspective. For when it all boils down to it, the decision we need to make is one about planning for our community’s long-term future. It’s not about what business or company owns what lands – as they may not even be in
existence in 40 years time. It’s not about pushing political or sociological ideologies. And it’s not about doing more of the same. It’s about defining the shape, feel and suitability of our neighbourhoods … our local communities … our Sunshine Coast region.
Getting it right … the future is in our hands by David Corkill, Principal Planner – Buckley Vann Town Planning Consultants Someone once said, “planning is bringing the future into the present so you can do something about it now.” The question is though, what do we know about the future and what can we usefully do about it now? Planning for the longer term is not the same as planning for the short term. In the short term, say two to three years into the future, we can predict with more accuracy what might happen. The context for decision making is more likely to be familiar and understood. We have a better understanding of the needs of those affected by our decisions and our experience guides us to act with less risk of failure. The likelihood and consequences of making the wrong decision are reduced because of the relative confidence we have about the future. Planning for a longer term future, say 20-30 years is more complicated. Because the future we are planning for is less familiar, certain and predictable, the risks of ‘getting it wrong’ are greater. Our planning will leave a legacy for future communities whose values and aspirations
might not be the same as ours and some of our planning can have an impact on the region’s much longer term future beyond 2040 to 2100 and beyond. How confident are we about the way communities in 2030 / 40 will live, work and play? What will be the same or different? How have lifestyle, commerce and recreation changed since 1980 / 90? Uncertainty means that planning for the longer term needs to be less absolute and more flexible. The areas under investigation (Beerwah East and Halls Creek) are an estimate of what might be required to accommodate growth after 2031, but land use decisions between now and 2030 could have substantial affects on the land uses, land area and infrastructure ultimately needed. How different might the growth area be if, for example, the region chose to accommodate some of the population and employment growth as infill development rather than in greenfield estates? So with this kind of uncertainty about the future, what are some of the principles we could consider which might help us ensure our 2014 decisions aren’t regretted in 2030 and beyond?
www.gcnews.com.au
… Here are a few, not a comprehensive list, for consideration. Integrating land use and public transit In order to provide travel choices and avoid congestion, it’s critical that we consider how residential, commercial and other land uses integrate with transit infrastructure. This reduces the reliance on the private motor vehicle as the main mode of travelling around and outside the region. Urban communities planned around public and active transit infrastructure enliven streets and promote more active communities. This is perhaps the single biggest contribution we could make to infrastructure efficiency, housing choice, affordable living and reducing pressure for urban expansion.
“
Our planning will leave a legacy for future communities whose values and aspirations might not be the same as ours…."
Infrastructure efficiency and viability A growing region requires major infrastructure. Infrastructure that is critical to the long-term future of the region requires significant public and private investment to establish and maintain. Planning should ensure that land uses are located in the places that maximise the
social, economic and environmental ‘return on investment’ of infrastructure expenditure. Development which diverts infrastructure investment away from priorities should be avoided as it reduces infrastructure ‘viability’. The early identification of a well located growth area will enable infrastructure planning and investment to proceed. Competitive advantage and community identity In a 2040 SEQ of 5.5 million people, what will be the ‘competitive advantage’ of the Sunshine Coast? Why will people choose to live, do business and invest here? Will the Sunshine Coast look and feel like the rest of SEQ or will it maintain a distinct identity? Planning for the future growth of the Sunshine Coast should reinforce a competitive advantage and create a distinct regional identity. Environment protection, open space retention and natural hazards A key component of regional identity and competitive advantage is the retention of environmental quality and the contribution that it makes to lifestyle and ‘liveability’. Similarly, open space – not just parks but the region’s non urban natural and productive landscapes – play a key role in the region’s character. As competition for the urban use of land near the urban fringe increases over time, it is essential that the value of this land to the liveability, sustainability and character of the region be recognised, reinforced and protected from erosion.
A further consideration is the exposure of future communities to the risks posed by natural hazards both now and in the future. Areas subject to future natural hazards should be avoided. The key message is that the future is uncertain. Our planning for the longer term should aim to take a long term view and put in place those building blocks that will enable choice and flexibility and contribute to the retention and sustainability of the unique character of the region. You don’t get a second chance at a first impression!
Business feature
First impressions last … the old saying still rings true and I believe it’s never more true than in real estate. When an owner decides to sell, there’s always one thing on their mind, getting the highest possible price. When someone is buying a home, there’s always one thing on their mind, getting a property that suits their needs for the lowest possible price. So, how does a savvy agent and invested owner bridge the gap? The first impression! If your property has overgrowing weeds, trinkets and your grandfathers first edition book collection piled to the ceiling, dust from 1974 still settled on your fan blades and you decide that an agents camera phone, or your own is sufficient to market the property then you will certainly not be creating a lasting first impression. However, if you weed and mulch the garden, gurney the driveway and house and do a top to bottom internal clean and de-clutter, then that’s an impression that will certainly last and evoke emotional buying. The same house, with some clever professional marketing and a good thorough clean and de-clutter will ALWAYS achieve a higher sale price. So ask yourself when selling … is it worth getting out the feather duster in order to achieve the highest possible price? This agent has seen it happen, so I say yes! Community event to save the forest If you’re concerned about the combined damaging effects a massive road reconstruction project and a proposed motorsports park could have on over 500 hectares of native forest, and the wildlife which calls it home, then you might be interested in attending a community meeting this Saturday.
Hands up who wants to save our forest
The ‘Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest’ group is organising the gathering of like-minds to hear about what is proposed, the devastating effects it will have, what is being done to bring about sensible change, and how you can help.
So, if you’re concerned about protecting ancient trees, koalas and other threatened wildlife, you might like to join them at 10.00am on Saturday, August 23 at Jowarra Park (next to Daisy’s Place) on Steve Irwin Way, Glenview.
Halls Creek cruise opens eyes to issues The Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC), with the support of Caloundra Cruises, organised a cruise of the Pumicestone Passage for interested community groups. The cruise on Monday, August 18, took over 50 representatives from 30 community groups on a two hour trip to learn more about the issues surrounding the Halls Creek urban development proposal. “Our objective is to help groups understand the significance of this issue to our region,” said Wiebe ter Bals, SCEC Executive Officer. “Most community groups (Rotary, P&Cs, cricket clubs, churches etc) would not normally get involved in a planning issue such as this, and that’s fine, that’s generally not their role in the community. “But the Halls Creek issue can fundamentally

alter the character of our region, the decisions we make this year will impact on our ability to preserve our lifestyle, the beauty and character of our region for decades to come. “That’s why we thought it was important that we invite those groups to come along and learn more about this issue that will affect us all. “The responses and discussions on Monday’s cruise were very encouraging, and show that the people in this region do care about where and when future development may happen,” said Wiebe. Stepping away from his exceptionally successful professional boxing career was always going to be Brett ‘Handful’ Smith’s toughest contest. But the realisation that he’d be able to spend so much more time with his one-year-old daughter Zara and wife Karyn made the decision a simple one for the Landsborough two-time world champion. “Although I’m probably at the top of my game at the moment, I really feel that I’ve achieved so much more that I ever expected to when I started boxing over five years ago,” said Brett. “I’m really excited to make the transition from competitive boxer to being a coach and trainer to the younger fighters who are just starting out.” Brett is mentoring two young boxers, with one being 14-year-old Landsborough lad Jake Molloy. According to Jake, having Brett as a trainer is pretty good. “Who wouldn’t want to be trained by a world champion,” said Jake. Starting his boxing a year ago at Hinterland

20th consecutive win for Beerwah High athletes Winning the Central Zone District Athletics has become somewhat of a tradition at Beerwah State High School and once again this year the students absolutely shined. However, the pressure for taking out the event for 20 consecutive years was felt by staff and students alike. The stage was set and the first day of the carnival saw Beerwah begin the day with a number of outstanding performances. The athleticism of the team resulted in a lead of 126 points at the end of day one. Before the second day of competition had even started it was made very clear that Maroochydore State High School were hot on our heels and had intentions to steal our coveted Districts trophy. The Beerwah Team rallied and broke a number of records along the way; Rowan Sutton’s 6.99m Long Jump and an incredible 13.84 metres in the Triple Jump were among the standout performances. The Chalmers boys continued their dominance of the open age group even though they were both battling illness. As with every year, the final event of the competition, the relays were a chance for all teams to come together and conclude the carnival. This year, the dedicated professional Beerwah staff had put a number of hours into practicing relay changes, as this has not been a strong suit of the team in previous outings.
The Beerwah High winning team in 2014 This practice proved to be perfect as the Beerwah team dominated the relays and finished in style. The relay wins cemented the victory and Beerwah had once again shattered the Maroochydore dream. Beerwah had scored the biggest winning margin in recent history of 243 points ahead of their nearest rival. They were also clear winners of the ‘Percentage’ trophy as well as ‘Overall Boys
Champions and Overall Girls Champions’. A very big congratulations to Beerwah State High School Athletics Team and, in particular, to all the staff and students who have made this remarkable achievement possible over the last 20 years. Well done Beerwah State High School! Overall Results were 1st Beerwah S.H.S 3315 points, 2nd Maroochydore S.H.S. 3072 points and 3rd Mountain Creek S.H.S. 2446 points.

My recent brush with fame By Lea Parkes
At a certain point in your life you have to start thinking about the future and retirement, and for many of us that means heading along to a financial advisor, and talking to them about what is required. Recently I did just that and saw Tracey Ferguson from Ferguson Financial Planning who sees clients at Hinterland Accounting and Tax in Simpson Street. Officially I was there to find out about the service that Tracey offers and how the financial planning process works. However, unofficially I really actually wanted to find out what it was like being a mum of a contestant chosen to appear on The Voice Kids Australia. For those that watched the show you will have seen lovely 13-year-old Ellie who was chosen by the Madden Brothers (apparently a dream come true for this teenage girl). While Ellie didn’t end up winning the show or becoming a finalist, Tracey said she really enjoyed the experience and got a great insight into how the industry and television production worked. Apparently there was plenty of excitement and tension before and during performances, however there was also a lot of ‘sitting around’ in the studio. So while you might be there for hours, the end result could be just a few minutes of air time. What impressed me most when chatting to Tracey is while she was obviously proud of Ellie’s performance and approach to the opportunity, she is certainly no stage mum, pushing her daughter into a career in the music industry, but she’s happy to encourage her choices. She talked about how well the production side of the show was managed to ensure that it was a positive experience for the young contestants. Tracey also explained how the kids performed in groups of three, so the ones that were unsuccessful, didn’t have to walk off stage alone. And when they were off stage, they spent time with their parents and a psychologist, to make sure they were ok about the process. So I know that I spent most of my appointment with Tracey finding out all about the ‘behind the scenes action’ I suppose that I really can’t avoid accepting that I am well into middle age and need to get back to the business at hand. Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle said a new wash down facility had been installed at Ewen Maddock Dam near Glenview to prevent the spread of weeds, especially Cabomba. The dam was infested with Cabomba, a declared weed that can multiply from even the smallest fragment. “This invasive species can seriously affect local ecology and water quality so it is very important that users of our lakes do everything possible to prevent its spread into other lakes and waterways,” Mr McArdle said. “We’ve also installed a tap at the wash down facility to allow dam users to wash the sand from their feet. “Paddlers can help protect the dam by removing all visible mud and plants from your craft, eliminating water from all equipment before transporting it anywhere, and cleaning all craft before leaving,” he said. It’s also recommended to clean and dry anything that came into contact with the water.

Contributed by Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer) Our Friendship day in July certainly lived up to its name, as visitors from neighbouring Garden Clubs enjoyed our hospitality. Each visitor was welcomed at the door with a gift of a small fern. After morning tea, President Coral Beutel extended a warm welcome to our visitors and members. Coral then introduced Glenis Bruin, Director of Garden Clubs Australia, for a short talk. She mainly spoke about the interesting comparisons of gardening to life. Then she brought us up-to-date on the latest happenings and upcoming events. Afterwards Trish McMorrine, Garden Ambassador for 2014 of the Qld Council of Garden Clubs, spoke a few words about her experiences as an ambassador. Guest speaker Gordon Howitt (one of our members) spoke with much humour, about his experiences on his recent adventure trekking to the first base camp with his daughter on Mt Everest. We must thank Jan Gresham for showing the projected images of Gordon’s trek. He showed us some of the gear he used on the trek and some souvenirs he brought back.

• $20,000.00 for ongoing maintenance of the buildings and grounds; • $40,000.00 for the Bankfoot House Management Plan update, which will inform future management of additional building requirements, new functions for the site and a garden plan; and • $40,000.00 as an operational budget for the new Archival / Interpretive building. The Archival / Interpretive building construction will begin later this year with a budget of $850,000, and will provide an enormous boost for the preservation and display of historic information and artefacts relating to our Glasshouse Country region. The Friends of Bankfoot House are looking forward to its completion which will allow volunteers to finally vacate the heritage-listed residence and carry out their conservation, preservation and research activities in a purpose-built facility. “The new building, the design of which will be sympathetic with the historic property, will also include public toilets and interpretive space for visitors and school students,” said Ron Gillinder, President of the Friends of Bankfoot House.
Facelift for Landsborough tennis courts Work is about to commence on the major redevelopment of the tennis courts at Landsborough. The Landsborough Tennis Club Secretary, Kerry Roach said the committee has been working with Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski, Sunshine Coast Council, and Tennis Queensland for nearly two years to bring together this project, which will provide the community with a high quality and valued resource. The first phase of civil construction began on Monday, August 18. This work will be undertaken by Shadforth Civil Contractors and managed by the Sunshine Coast Council Recreational Projects Team and is expected to be completed by early October. The second phase of construction by Tennis Queensland will then begin and is expected to be completed by mid-November.
As you can appreciate, it is vital to ensure the health and safety requirements are met on site, and as a result, there will be restricted access to the construction site throughout this time. The contractor will be providing secure construction fencing to the site which will allow for continued use of the front two courts; however restrictions to some site parking and pedestrian access to areas will be limited for this period. All weekly tennis events will continue using the front two courts only. “The club is very grateful for your patience throughout this period and will endeavour to keep you all informed of the process,” Kerry said. The club is looking forward to providing players and the community with the upgraded high quality courts for all to enjoy. If you would like any further information or enquiries please do not hesitate to contact the committee. www.gcnews.com.au
Serious dedication to Ekka fun
By Lea Parkes When most people think about an Aged Care Home you may not initially think about it being a fun environment, however last week at Embracia in Glasshouse Country the staff and volunteers made sure that there was plenty of fun as they celebrated ‘Ekka Week’. This is an annual event at Embracia where they create some of the elements of the Ekka in-house including sideshow alley Resident Leila Boyle with her beautiful craft work on display games, art and craft exhibits and spectacular floral and plant displays. According to one of the staff that I spoke to, with each year it seems to get bigger and bigger. When Diversional Therapist Trina Haylock mentioned to me that last Thursday was clown day, I couldn’t resist a quick visit with my camera! The dedication of the group of staff and volunteers in creating their costumes is quite extraordinary and it certainly created plenty of smiles from the residents. The whole interior of the facility is transformed for the week, creating plenty of talking points and prompts for reminiscing about the past.

Community groups snag a helping hand Not-for-profit community groups in the Caloundra Electorate will be given the chance to receive free sausages for their community fundraising events during the months of September to October. Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said after speaking to many community groups about their fundraisers, the biggest problems they encountered was covering the costs of basic materials such as sausages. “Every week during the months of September - October I will be donating one pack of 10kg worth of sausages to a local community group each week as a way to say thanks for all of their hard work,” Mr McArdle said. “Everybody loves a sausage sizzle on a Saturday morning and hopefully it will help raise a few extra dollars towards worthy community projects.” All community groups have to do is send an email to caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au with ‘Snag my event’ in the subject line and outline your community group’s event to be held during September or October along with contact details. All entries will go into a draw with one community group drawn each week. Winners will be notified with the sausages to be collected from a local butcher on the Friday of that week. All events will also be promoted on Mr McArdle’s Facebook page.

I’m alright Jack … bad luck for you! Because we who live here are Queenslanders, we actually own the public assets of the State of Queensland. Now, that means we also own the electricity generating and delivery infrastructure. We all usually refer to it as Energex in the South Eastern corner. Well this asset is rapidly losing its income from the sale of self generated coal electricity.
Think about this Every solar panel installed on a roof, effectively means Energex delivers one less kilowatt hour of electricity to a consumer each day. You have seen the number of solar panels out there, so you can understand how rapidly their revenue is falling.
Price hike There is no alternative but to keep raising the price of electricity, because as a State asset which we all own, we need to keep it going. We need the electricity for industry to keep our employment up and we need it at night when our solar systems are asleep.
What do I do, Jack? Keep paying much higher prices for your electricity each quarter. Remember, every solar panel installed contributes to electricity price rises and every price increase encourages more people to install solar panels. So sooner or later, human nature takes over and the “every man (or woman) for themselves” survival mode, fires up. Do you put the welfare of the State before your own welfare? You decide. If you decide to save yourself, then there is a no deposit payment plan available and you use the money you save on producing your own home made electricity TO PAY OFF your solar system. In effect, the power company is paying off YOUR SOLAR system … so it’s not all doom and gloom.

Local singer songwriter heading to US
Glass House Mountains based singer-songwriter Jen Mize is set to make a splash in the US next month with a 15-state tour and National Radio Promotion campaign. Jen’s album ‘Fear, Pride and a Few Stubborn Angels’ has been picked up by Brad Paul, former VP of the prestigious Rounder Records, who’s extensive industry contacts will see Jen’s album in the hands of over 350 of America’s most influential radio stations. “It feels funny to say but by September this album we made in a small Brisbane studio with great local guys will be moving up the Americana charts,” says Jen. The timing could not be better as Jen prepares for her third appearance in as many years at the Americana Music Festival in Nashville next month. “In the last few years I have played the Gympie Muster and then jumped on the next plane to Nashville, but this year we have a tour set up that starts in Seattle and covers around 15 states over two months. Plus I already have 30 radio interviews booked in and that is growing daily,” she said. While Jen calls Glasshouse Country home, she's no stranger to the US. A descendant of the Lumbee Tribe of native Americans, Jen hails from a family of Georgia cotton and North Carolina tobacco farmers. If you would like to know more about Jen, check out her website www.jenmize.com
Sunshine Coast local turns yellow this Daffodil Day Beerwah resident Glenda Halpin will turn the town yellow this Daffodil Day (Friday, August 22) in honour of loved ones touched by cancer. Glenda lost both her mother and brother to cancer and for the past 10 years has dedicated her time as a Cancer Council Queensland volunteer – determined to give hope to others touched by the disease that takes too much. Ms Halpin and members of the Cancer Council Queensland Sunshine Coast branch will brighten the lives of Queenslanders affected by cancer by selling fresh daffodils and merchandise. Daffodil Day stands will be set up outside Beerwah IGA and Woolworths, Glasshouse Mountains IGA, and Landsborough IGA – the stalls will run on Friday, August 22 from 8.30am - 5.30pm and Saturday, August 23 from 8.00am - 12.00noon. As the daffodil is an international symbol of hope, Glenda said she wants to inspire hope in others battling the disease. “Daffodil Day is a cause close to heart for me but we all know someone who’s been touched by cancer,” Ms Halpin said. Cancer Council Queensland Regional Fundraising Coordinator Esther Attewell said this year Cancer Council hopes to sell 800,000 daffodils statewide, something that could not be achieved without vital community support. “With the help of Sunshine Coast volunteers like
Glenda Halpin (right) appeared on the cover of GCNews in 2011 with Paia Ingram
Ms Halpin we can help to make Daffodil Day a success and turn the town yellow,” Ms Attewell said. “A bright splash of yellow does more than light up the community – it means we are taking steps to beat cancer and to show our support to those affected.” This Daffodil Day, Cancer Council Queensland hopes to raise $1.7 million to support its vital work in cancer research, education and patient support services. For more information about Daffodil Day, visit daffodilday.com.au, or call the Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

Entry forms are available and entries must be submitted by Friday at 3.00pm. All photos entered will be displayed at the Beerwah Charity Sports Day on Saturday, August 23, when the winners will be announced. Entry is $2.00 per print, and forms are available from the Glasshouse Mountains Pharmacy, Landsborough Pharmacy, Beerwah Pharmacy, Mooloolah Pharmacy and the Maleny Newsagency. The continuing story the history of the Sports Club… Mr Fullerton continued his address, stating – “Fortunately all of the Minute Books from 1939 to 1987 are accounted for. Mr W Grigor was Secretary in 1939 so while recounting the early years of the Sports Club we are depending entirely on memory and therefore many important details can be overlooked. On the First of October, 1921, the Sports Club received a lease of 5 acres of the Reserve from the Trustees for general sports purposes. This document was signed on behalf of the Trustees by Mr Robert Fullerton Snr, Mr George Markwell and Mr Frederick Lonergan, and on behalf of the Sports Club by Robert Fullerton Jnr, Chairman, and J S Fullerton, Secretary / Treasurer, and witnessed by Mr Alec Barr, Mr Jack Gilvear and Mr Horace Doak in the presence of Mr Doneley J P. One recognises that the founders of the Sports Club were men of vision but we also must admire their courage and determination, for what they had leased from the Trustees was 5 acres of heavily timbered virgin bush on which they planned to build a sports oval. They required finance so they decided to conduct a race meeting.
You may wonder why they would have chosen horseracing but all of these country places had race tracks, including Beerburrum, Beerwah and Landsborough. …….a circular track was marked out and they solicited public support for their working bees. The response was excellent and the track was cleared – perhaps it was not up to Q.T.C. standards but it served the purpose.” Mr Fullerton commented that there was no machinery in those days for clearing land so it all had to be done by hand, but the men doing the work were all skilled in land clearing. He also pointed out that there were few roads at the time, no motor vehicles and the only telephone was at the railway station where emergency messages could be relayed. “We can appreciate that in these circumstances, organising of any event would present some difficulties.” Apparently the race meeting was organised and the date set. To be continued…..

School News Students get their hands dirty On July 25, Glenview students took part in the National Tree Day planting activity in the school grounds. All year levels participated throughout differing areas of the campus. They planted a fruit tree forest as well as native plants on the front bank of the hall and rainforest plants in what was a barren area at the end of the Prep building. The fruit tree forest will be an ongoing project for years to come, to build a sustainable fruit supply for the school. A huge thankyou goes out to Simon of Go Green Rainforest Nursery on Steve Irwin Way Glenview, for donating his time and a large number of plants for the day.

Doing Business The old Vet clinic relocates to new premises
By Sonia Clark The original Landsborough Vet Clinic has relocated to bigger, brighter and more convenient premises opposite the BP at Landsborough. The new purpose built clinic opened at the end of July and fulfils a long held vision of the former owner Graeme Lean who wanted to create a state-of-the-art clinic with all the facilities that would benefit clients. With plenty of car parking, and a large surgery and prep room, the new building has been built to a high level of standard and includes two consulting rooms, a laboratory and imaging room. Blood testing is done onsite, and services such as digital radiology, ultra sound, and orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery are all offered under one roof. Although the clinic has moved, many of the old faces are the same, with vet Robyn and the return of David Coates. Customers will also know long term nurse, Anne, and also Lisa, Johanna and Tamara. Customers can also be assured that all their previous details and medical histories have transferred safe and sound to the new building. Tom, Sam and the team of vets and nurses who make up Landsborough Vets are really enjoying working out of the new building, however they are still available for house calls and farm visits and aim to continue to provide the same care and old fashioned country service that Landsborough and Glass House Mountains Vet surgeries have built up over many years. Although the new premises are quite flash, the fees remain the same and they continue to cater for all animals great and small. The surgery will be having an open day on Saturday, September 6 from 11.00am to 3.00pm, to let clients come and check out the new premises. Come along and enjoy heaps of fun with a sausage sizzle, jumping castle, sample-bags, and tours through the new surgery. 9 Caloundra Road Landsborough, phone 5494 1337. Business Buzz with Sonia Clark Embracia in Glasshouse Country aged care home in Beerwah has been awarded the 2104 QLD State Winner in the Retirement and Care Services category by Australian Achiever Awards. The annual awards are judged on customer satisfaction criteria of time related service, addressing client needs, care and attention, value, attitude, communication, and overall perception. The awards program identifies anything over 80% as exceptional, and reflects outstanding customer service so Embracia’s 96.7% customer satisfaction level shows just how highly the residents feel about their home. This is not the first time their efforts have been recognised. In 2006, 2009 and 2011 they were awarded Highly Recommended and they were the National Winner in 2013. Residential Service Manager, Christine Hawkes said they were obviously very happy to receive this award. “It’s what we’re here for, to make sure our residents are well cared for,” she said. health & wealth relationships business & career Life Coaching – a profession that supports personal and professional growth and development based on individual-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. These outcomes are linked to personal or professional success. Success is defined in many ways. Through coaching, life success is not about pushing and driving ourselves harder, it is about releasing the blocks that restrict us from connecting our mind and heart. Coaching gets to the heart of the issue or challenge that is most affecting you. With the knowledge, life events and life circumstances that we have taken in over many years we at times may react or respond to a situation via past experiences which are not serving our best purpose today. While positive feelings / emotions are a natural outcome of coaching, the primary focus is on creating actionable strategies for achieving specific goals in one’s work or personal life. As we encompass the mind, heart connection we expand the truth of our spirit our ‘True Essence’ or as many refer to it, our ‘Authenticity’. Everybody has some limiting conversation, story or narrow perspective that can be released by the power of coaching. I support, guide and coach people to release limiting thinking and sabotage by the way of powerful questioning techniques, NLP techniques, Hypnotherapy and other healing modalities to let go of lifetime limitations. Once the limitation either about themselves, their ability or their possible future has been let go, then they can truly discover what they want to achieve. They will embark on a journey of self-discovery that will begin to generate solutions and strategies, a pathway forward in their life, making new empowering decisions, choices and action plans that then move their life forward in an unrestricted and unlimited way with clarity. AUGUST 20 2014
On August 2, I was pleased to say some words of thanks at the official opening of the new Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed. The new shed is located at the Glasshouse Country Care property on Peachester Road, just outside Beerwah. The original ‘shared shed’ was located at the Recycling Centre, where the manager Trish and her team did such a good job hosting the Men’s Shed that it out-grew the location! This new collaboration between the Men’s Shed members and Glasshouse Country Care has seen the provision of a new purpose built shed with huge potential for growth. Now the hard work of fitting it out begins. My congratulations go to this bigger family of collaborators for their efforts to make good things happen for their members and the community.
Beerwah SHS Leaders Investiture
More congratulations – this time to staff and students of Beerwah SHS on the successful School Leaders Investiture on July 25. It was my privilege to say a few words of encouragement to the assembled students and I was really impressed with the way the whole thing was done; the staff makes every effort to help the students to shine on the day and I’ve noticed this is something Beerwah State High School does very well: encourage leadership at every level.

It’s just a few more days until one of Beerwah’s great traditions and premier community events gets under way again! More than 200 activities will make up this year’s Beerwah Charity Sports Carnival which will raise much-needed funds for the Cancer Council. It will showcase many of our community sports and service organisations as well as more traditional rural groups like the Pony Club, while presenting the ever popular vintage cars and a range of tasty local produce. The carnival brings out the best of Beerwah and reminds us all of just how good country fairs can be for the whole family. I look forward to seeing you all there.

New local projects
I’m delighted to hear construction has started on the Horse Wash Down Bay at Mooloolah Pony Club. The wash down bay will include a pump station and sewer connection and is expected to be completed by mid next month. Also coming soon to Mooloolah Sportsgrounds, look out for a new multifunctional shelter with a barbecue and two table and seating combinations. The toilet block will also be undergoing a facelift. The designs of both pieces of infrastructure will nicely complement the other, with matching skillion rooves, and blend well into their surroundings.
Party houses
A heads up that changes to the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 are about to come in and local councils may opt to regulate ‘party houses’ in their respective planning schemes. Full details of the final passed legislation are not available at this stage but I know that residents are often confused about what constitutes a party house and I will keep residents informed about any changes that may affect them.
NBN roll-out
I have been receiving some inquiries recently regarding possible new sites for the southern part of the Sunshine Coast by NBN Co for towers as they grow the network connection here. Council does not have any information about specific sites but understand that areas in Divisions 1 and 5 are being investigated by NBN Co for suitability. For further information about the fixed wireless build, phone NBN Co on 1800 687 626 or visit their website at www.nbnco.com.au.
Festive Season grants
I wanted to highlight that now is also the time for groups to apply for festive season funding if they are planning activities to help our communities celebrate the upcoming Christmas, New Year’s Eve or Australia Day. The major grant round for projects closes Monday, September 15 at 5.00pm. An additional Festive Season minor round for projects up to $2,000 will open Wednesday, October 1 and close Monday, November 3. www.gcnews.com.au

Editor’s note Re: Beerwah RSL battles on GCNews have received a number of letters in relation to the Beerwah RSL battling on – and the comments made by Ron Hill in GCNews edition August 6 that ‘the citizens club was given notice as they were trying to remove the RSL influence from the citizens club’, and that ‘the club now appears to be in the position that unless more people attend ‘their’ premises, it may have to close’. The following two letters are longer than we would normally include but as they seem to cover the issues raised by many members in the community we have decided to print them in full. And in future editions only letters that raise different perspectives / concerns will be printed.
Somewhat bemused
I have to admit that I am somewhat bemused that the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub-Branch would be surprised at the lack of support shown to their RSL & Citizens Memorial Club after their heavy handed approach to resolving issues with the previous Management Committee of the then RSL & Citizens Memorial Club, and members of the club, in 2011. My understanding of this matter is that: 1. At some point in 2010 the BeerwahPeachester RSL Sub-Branch took umbrage that six of its members were not elected to the RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Management Committee, however minutes of the Annual General Meeting show that there were six RSL Sub-Branch members elected to the committee at the 2010 Annual General Meeting. Perhaps the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub-Branch felt that six places on the committee should be reserved for members nominated by the RSL Sub Branch. 2. The Beerwah-Peachester RSL sub branch (Gresham v Beerwah & Citizens Memorial Club Inc) placed an application before the Supreme Court to have the 2010 election of members of the Management Committee of the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Inc declared invalid and another election ordered. It was noted in the judgment handed down by Judge J. Daubney that what the RSL Sub-Branch was seeking was simply not provided for in the rules of the then Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Inc. The Supreme Court ruled that although the election was not in accordance with the rules, it was valid under the Act. Therefore the application was dismissed. 3. At some point in early 2011, the BeerwahPeachester RSL Sub-Branch ordered that the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club vacate the club building (owned by the BeerwahPeachester RSL Sub-Branch) by April 12, 2011. At the time of being ordered to vacate the premises in Beerwah Parade the then RSL & Citizens Memorial Club had been established for some 40 odd years, and would appear to have been well attended over that period, by its 3,500 members. As one of those 3,500 members, at no time during the period of re-establishing the RSL & Citizens Memorial Club, (which I assume has six members installed by the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub-Branch) on its Management Committee, have I received an invitation to return to the club premises. When a business is failing it is not unheard of to call upon past customers for their continued support. When a business is run by attitudes more commonly found in a school ground it is highly unlikely that ‘compromise’ would be a consideration in the ongoing management of that business. As a veteran I was disillusioned and disgusted by 20 |

the ‘game playing’ within the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub-Branch executive in 2010, and as a member of the RSL & Citizens Memorial Club I felt that the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub-Branch had done irreversible damage and tarnished the image of the RSL. It had also undermined the successful operation of a facility that owed its ongoing success to a constant flow of local residents that patronised it, one assumes, because they enjoyed what they had. You reap what you sow. What happened?
As a past dedicated member of the Beerwah RSL Sub-Branch, and committee member holding senior office as either Secretary or Treasurer for more than 20 years, I would like to make the following observations. Back in the glory days of the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club during 2010 / 2011 the citizens Club was the pride of the Sunshine Coast. Whilst most clubs were struggling with poor profits and falling patronage, Beerwah's club was surging ahead in total contrast to the trend existing statewide. It was winning awards, producing record profits and being almost fully patronised by the local community only. The Club was totally debt free plus had in excess of $1.5 million in cash assets. The Club also financed the Sub-Branch to the tune of $240,000 per year as rent on the Sub-Branch premises whilst also paying for improvements (ie. the back deck) all general maintenance, council rates and insurance. This was achieved because of a very strong, professional, capable and ethical management team. Over a period of time they built the Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club from a small backwater, hinterland RSL to become the most profitable Club on the Sunshine Coast, even outperforming the likes of Caloundra and Maroochydore RSL's. The Beerwah RSL Sub-Branch, as owners of the premises, wanted to take full control under the guise of amalgamation to make the club entirely Sub-Branch owned and operated with the club citizens having restricted membership and no voting rights on the management committee. The Club was expected to hand over all their cash and fixed assets (Including poker machines with their licences) to the Sub-Branch whereupon they would take over the management with people from within their own ranks. At this stage the Citizens club had taken over the Glasshouse Mountains Bowls Club, as it had stagnated, was in need of substantial repair, and was in danger of being foreclosed on by the bank. As a gesture to the local bowling community and the citizens of Glass House Mountains, the Club repaired and operated the Club for many years at a financial loss. When asked what would happen to the Bowls Club, the RSL Sub-Branch reply was that if it was not profitable, it would be closed and either sold or redeveloped. The Sub-Branch members of the Citizens Club, who held a 60% majority of the Club’s committee (where the constitution stated that both President and Vice President had to be Sub-Branch members) felt this was grossly and morally unfair. Because of the Club’s resistance to the takeover,
the Citizens Club was evicted from the RSL premises at Beerwah and then relocated at the Glasshouse Mountains Bowls Club. Consequently the Sub-Branch were left with their debt free building and substantial funds (in excess of $250,000) This disharmony totally destroyed and split the Sub-Branch. Some members felt that if not for the earlier citizens of the area the Club would never have been created because their involvement was needed to establish the Club initially. Others strictly adhered to the belief that RSL's were for veterans only and citizens should only have limited membership with no voting rights. The Citizens Club retained as much of their management team as they could and turned the Glasshouse Mountains Bowls Club into a profitable community asset. So what happened after the Beerwah Peachester Sub-branch took over for its very future to be in question? Alan Christie Everton Park
Thanks for helping my cycling buddy
I would like to thank all the people who came to help when my cycling buddy Hanna Brandli was hit by a car Monday morning (August 11) on the corner of Pine Camp Road and Simpson Street. Thanks to the two women (nurses) who rushed to give assistance, the man who took our bikes and left them in a safe place, those who directed traffic and as usual the unsung heroes of our community: ambulance, police, fire and rescue personnel. Hanna suffered a broken pelvis but is determined to be back on the bike as soon as possible. She sends her heartfelt thanks. Cyclists are the most vulnerable of all road users. Eight cyclists have been killed so far on the road this year and they were all involved a collision with a car. Many more have been injured. The Road Safety Authority says the focus must be twofold: more cautious cyclists on one hand and more cautious drivers on the other. Cyclists need to ensure they are visible, but drivers must learn to anticipate cyclists at junctions, and check blind spots. As it was, we were cycling single file with head and tail lights flashing and in the designated strip for cyclists on Simpson Road. Dear motorists, we cyclists are out doing what we love, what keeps us healthy and happy. Please look for out us. (Could the kind person who rushed home and got a pillow contact me. I have this at my place. Ring me on 0488 410 016.) Mary Garden Beerwah

Beerwah forging ahead
Democracy for the people
I recently had the good fortune to meet local councillor Rick Baberowski who was conducting a walkthrough from the Woolworths complex to Embracia Retirement Village. I am an owner of the Coastal Complex and after the usual introductions he asked whether there was anything that I was concerned with as a ratepayer. I showed him some 80 metres of overgrown foliage that was sometimes missed in the past. He ascertained that it was the councils responsibility and within five days had a crew onsite. The team was exceptionally led and were efficient, hardworking and well informed. The entire area was weeded and mulch was spread right along the pathway connecting to Beerwah Heights. Trees also had to be cut down and cleared as well as other storm debris. The work was very labour intensive and took several days to complete. Every day the team leader touched base with me and simply finalised all requests. The constituents have got it right and that is why Beerwah is forging ahead with residential and commercial improvement with a much-needed downtown makeover. It is a representation that the ‘right people are in the right places’. Stephen Joliffe, Beerwah
We won’t have a democratic process about the proposed motorbike tracks, our electoral system allows bullies like liberal, national and labour to do whatever they like, they don’t listen to the public and are out of touch with real life. It’s time to abolish state governments; (too expensive and ineffective we have to cut costs so let’s start here). Let’s introduce a more democratic federal electoral system like they have in most countries. For example NZ is using the MMP system now, it’s more democratic. They have to work together (they should because they are working for us) and the NZ parliament debates are now worth listening to – they’re civilised without personal vendettas. Yes decision making will take longer, but they will be better decisions, and more focussed on the future. Everything now in Australia is shortterm, with consequences for long-term but in the negative way! It’s also time to get rid of the high salaries and perks that they get in politics. In the past, people who were interested in doing something for Australia were not doing it for the money but for Australia, now Australians are ripping off Australians! Tax, GST and all sorts of regulations for working people, blue cards, white cards, council rates, are these days higher than a month’s salary etc. We should start with a clean slate and get rid of the overpaid bureaucrats. Martin Balk Mooloolah Valley
Parkside Drive a real concern I wrote recently saying I was concerned someone might be harmed walking in the middle of Parkside Drive, Beerwah. Today there was a fire on the opposite side of my home which started on the Peachester Road side of the gazetted park area. Then the fire brigade decided to do a back burn from Parkside Drive of the gazetted park area. I lost count of how many trucks were on our street which is narrow and has no footpath. They were careful to park on both sides, not side to side, but left enough gap so that a car could get through and out of the estate. However, those walking home from the shops (and obviously those that wanted to know what was going on) congregated on the lawns of those houses without a footpath. There was no room for error of anyone walking in the middle of the road because half the residents of the upper part of Parkside Drive I saw driving away from their properties. This wasn't just an hour but many hours. Can someone from Council really look at this issue? And can all Beerwah Heights Estate Residents do the same? Please for the safety of our children and those with mobility issues. Yvonne Taylor Beerwah
Apology required Dear GCNews readers, in relation to my health column that ran last week, it has been brought to my attention that I chose very poor wording regarding life coaches. I have personally used several life coaches in recent years, and found them very beneficial for my business, relationships, and all around life enjoyment. I offer my sincerest apologies for my wording which suggested a very limited view of what life coaching has to offer, and I suggest anyone who is struggling with any area of their life to consider a life coach to help overcome these obstacles. Paralysis tick Every year the warnings come too late to residents and hundreds of pets die an unnecessary death! Especially those that are new to the hinterland, they’ll have no idea just how deadly and swift this tick is. I lost so many pets when I first moved here 20 years ago and if you can save just one family from the heartache of losing their beloved pet, it would be wonderful. Please contact a few Vets (don’t just get one opinion) from around the area, even a few old locals, to inform people of what to expect when a pet is poisoned. Any wobble to the back legs is the first sign. Never give water or food. Keep them cool and see the vet straight away. Use tick collars and tick washes, there are an array of products, but none as good as checking, DAILY, particularly the front end of the animal. These things people do not know or leave it too late to protect their pet and a Vet bill is in excess of $700.00. Hence I am writing to you now! Please print an article in your paper, save someone the heartache. Laurel Frawley Bellthorpe
Great day For all who attended the Garage Sale at Glass House Country RSL we had people asking if we were going to do it on a regular basis. We made a date for our next one. It will be held on November 1. Watch out for more details in Glasshouse Country News as the date draws closer. Kaz Glass House Mountains
Experiencing the noise I would like to let John Hulcombe (GCNews August 6 ) know that I too am experiencing the noise from the western side of the hinterland. For us at Beerburrum there is a low register buzzing / hum / vibration type noise which rises and falls, and becomes extremely distressing in the early hours of the morning. As we are on the higher northern side of our street it is more prevalent than perhaps other areas that fall away to the south. Perhaps other people who are noticing this noise pollution might register their concerns at the office of our local councillor, Rick Baberowski as I have done, in the hope that its source might be found. Christine G. Smith Beerburrum
Level of crime With a lot of community discussion and comment about crime and criminal activity in Queensland and the Sunshine Coast I thought your readers might like to know the current state of play with our level of crime. As the ALP candidate for Caloundra in the next state election, and with over 15 years’ experience working in the criminal justice system, I have been investigating suggestions by the Newman Government that our crime rate has come down by more than 10%. After looking at the offences committed during the past three years, I can report that actual offences committed for the Sunshine Coast Region have been steady, and are not showing a 10% decrease as suggested. In actual fact the number of reported offences rose from 21,352 in 2012-13 to 21,601 in 2013-14. These statistics show there is no sign of any significant decrease in the overall incidents of crime on the Sunshine Coast. I might also add that while the Newman Government has been stating that they are focusing on front line services I am surprised to discover that they have effectively closed the Landsborough Police Station - what next the Court House? Hi Everyone
O
ver the past few years, we have been regularly approached by members of the Maleny community letting us know that they like our publication and asking us to print contributions about community events in Maleny. Where possible we have done this, and since late last year we have also been bulk dropping papers into a number of locations in Maleny, gradually expanding the number of papers we supply as the interest in GCNews grows in the Maleny area. For the first time this week we have included a special feature – ‘Meet Maleny’. It’s interesting as the businesses that have chosen to participate, also happen to offer products and services many of which we don’t have the full variety of in our business mix, in the townships of Glasshouse Country. We hope it gets you thinking about making the journey up the hill for a day out. Regards,

Returning to the Maleny Showgrounds over the weekend of September 13 -14, this year's event promises to be an authentic display of food that has been either grown or produced in the Sunshine Coast bioregion. Based on the principles of good, clean and fair, this fun family day out will inspire visitors with passionate producers and chefs, stalls, demonstrations, discussions, entertainment and other activities. Last year’s event attracted over 8,000 visitors and so behind the scenes help is being sought to make this year’s festival another huge success. Event organisers said a strong theme from the visitor survey conducted after the 2013 Real Food Festival was how wonderful the volunteers were. Whether it was ‘hitting the reset button’ in the demonstration kitchens in between presenters, picking up rubbish, reuniting lost children and parents, or handing out Show Bags at one of the gates, the 100 volunteers were applauded for their attention to detail and genuine care. Importantly for the Festival, and the region, was that the volunteers greeted visitors with big
smiles that welcomed them to Maleny and the Hinterland. This year’s volunteers are offered free entry on the day(s) they work, a Festival apron and water bottle, in exchange for three hours of their time. Prospective volunteers are invited to email Dana Paxton on dana@realfoodfestivals.com.au to register their interest. Head along and be part of the team!

Meet Holden’s Galley Address: corner of Coral and Myrtle Street Maleny What would you like our readers to know about your business? Operating for over 10 years in Maleny, owners Phil and Jennifer have recently bought the entire stock of the retiring business Maleny Art Supplies, and relocated it to the gallery. In a bid to cater to local demand and provide a comprehensive range of available artist supplies, they will be dramatically increasing the stock range with a bumper shipment of additional products arriving this week. The range will include, paints (oils, watercolours and enamels) and will compliment the already core business specialising in customised picture framing. Enjoying customers returning from all over the hinterland and beyond, their framing business builds on a reputation of quality, craftsmanship and service. Holden’s Gallery also offers a small range of handmade gifts and is open every day (except Sunday) from 10.00am until 4.00pm.
Meet Maleny Cruise and Travel Address: 39 Maple Street, Maleny Maleny Cruise and Travel have provided exceptional service with comprehensive and individually tailored advice for the people of the Hinterland and Range for over 20 years. Meet Paradise Furniture and Décor Address: Shop 2 / 12 Bunya Street, Maleny After moving from Alice Springs with their five children in 2013, Sandy and Harry now call Maleny home. They have settled into life in the rolling green hills and haven't regretted the move for a moment. Because of the shortage of work on the Sunshine Coast they decided to create their own income and set up their own business. From there Paradise Furniture & Décor was born, opening its doors back in May. They have been receiving great feedback about their fantastic prices and the range of products they carry. As one of their customers summed up quite accurately on Facebook the store is ‘A veritable treasure trove! With friendly service and great prices!’

Labor Party announces candidate for Glass House Maleny local Brent Hampstead has been confirmed as the new face of Labor for the electorate in a launch last Thursday. To a crowd gathered outside the Glass House Mountains tourist information centre, Deputy Opposition Leader Tim Mulherin said that, as a local small business owner with long family ties to the area, particularly in dairy farming, he knows what makes the Hinterland tick. “Brent will be a strong local voice for the Glass House area,” said Tim. Mr Hampstead, 48, said he was looking forward to the challenge of taking the fight to the LNP in Glass House. “I suspect though that the upcoming election campaign will be the toughest challenge of my life yet and I’m looking forward to working with the local community to fight for a fairer, better
deal for Glass House.” One strong supporter is former local member Carolyn Male (now Ferguson), who said that with his experience and background, Brent is ready to represent Glass House. “I know Brent and he’s more than willing to get out there, listen to the community and fight for the people of the Glass House electorate,” Carolyn said. Living Photography Corner with the U3A Grafx Group Contributed by Margaret Thompson
Lasting beauty! Flower photography is becoming more popular as many of our avid gardeners use their cameras to share the products of their toil. There are many techniques to avoid the obvious problems of contrast, wind or untidy backgrounds. Sometimes it is possible to cut the flower or move a pot into a controlled lighting situation as has happened with this rose. Then it is a simple matter to set up a suitable background, hold up a reflector and voila, a slight enhancement with your software, a suitable frame, and you have a beautiful record of your flower. This image was taken using a Canon camera, f22 at 1/10 sec. and was judged by Gary Bradford as June Picture of the Month. Watch out for details of the Orchid Photo Competition to be run by Glasshouse Country Orchid Society.
Travelling Tales with Brian Aitkin
GCNews journey
By Lea Parkes Beerwah local Brian Aitken is a very keen traveller, often heading to exotic locations around the globe, and he never leaves home without a copy of GCNews. Over the years, Brian has been photographed with his reminder from home and we have shared some of these photos with our readers. On his most recent trip, Brian left Beerwah late in June and spent most of July travelling through Russia on a cruise, Greece (including the Greek Islands), and then onto a Baltic tour. For 10 days he cruised through Russia departing from St Petersburg and ending in Moscow. Following this was two weeks in Greece, one week on the mainland and one week enjoying the highlights of Mykonos and Santorini. The last stage of his trip was a nine day tour ‘Classic Baltics’ which gave Brian the opportunity to experience the warmth, charm and fascinating history of the Baltic States on this in-depth tour through Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Brian certainly makes the most of his travels and he always seems happy to be back on home soil in Beerwah after his big adventures.

Visitor Information Centre Update By Bev Dooley It has been an amazing month for us here at the centre with the launch of our Matthew Flinders panel. On July 16, we hosted a morning tea for local dignitaries, Councillor Rick Baberowski, the Mayor of the Sunshine Coast, Mark Jamieson and the President of our local Chamber of Commerce, Bob McLean. The event was covered by local TV and news and gained wider promotion in national newspapers, promoting the Glass House Mountain area. My moment of fame is in the picture shown with myself and Bob enjoying a chat. Then on the actual day of the Bicentennial, July 19, Ivon Northage the main driver behind getting the panel in place, hosted a fabulous morning at the centre. Mal Brough gave an official opening speech and a morning tea was enjoyed by all. Around 50 attended, welcoming the first tourist to the Glass House Mountains to our centre. Call in when you are passing to have a look - it is an interesting read and quite amazing to think of what Matthew Flinders did. We have seen a number of visitors from overseas this month taking advantage of our beautiful Queensland winter. It never fails to surprise me the talents hidden in our Ambassadors to converse with visitors in their own tongue. We are very lucky to have Ambassadors fluent in Dutch, German and French, as you can imagine this is often welcomed by visitors struggling to get their requirements across. Personally it is one of the things I love the most about the centre, it can be so multi-cultural, and the chance to convey the beauty of the area to many countries is a great privilege. If you feel you would like to be a part of our wonderful team here at the centre, call in have a look around and pick up an application form, we would love to chat with you. Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce President Bob McLean with Bev Dooley from Sunshine Coast Destinations
The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information centre is located at Settler's Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains and is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 4.00pm www.gcnews.com.au

Happenings Out and About Chappy Golf Day a hit On Sunday, August 3 our local state school chaplains ran their annual fundraiser golf day at the Beerwah Golf Club. It seemed like they had some divine intervention with ‘awesome’ weather and 81 players took to the course in support of this great service to kids in schools. Everyone enjoyed the great atmosphere including the chappies who dressed up as The Fairy Godmother, Scooby Doo and Cat in the Hat. Congratulations to the winners of the Westpac Trophy, Graham, Isaac, and Jared Goodman and Mark Peiker. Runners up were the team from Glasshouse Country Care.

David Williamson's stinging satirical comedy ‘Let the Sunshine’ is set in the couples' homes in both Noosa and Sydney as well as in various local cafes. Suicide Bereavement Remembrance Day A Sunshine Coast event to remember those who have been lost through suicide in our local communities and to acknowledge those bereaved family, friends and associates who have been left behind, has been organised by United Synergies and the StandBy Response Service. The special remembrance ceremony will be held at Picnic Point, Maroochydore on Saturday, September 13 commencing at 10.00am to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day. The day will feature the words and thoughts of people bereaved by suicide, a presentation by the Caloundra Living Beyond Suicide Support Group and other guest speakers. Activities will include a brief Remembrance Ceremony, followed by the release of doves and the opportunity for individuals to place flowers of remembrance in the river, in acknowledgement of the significance of this day for our communities. Children’s activities with parental supervision will also be available. www.gcnews.com.au
Beerwah Charity Sports Day . . . this Saturday It all starts at 8.30am at the Beerwah Sportsground this Saturday, August 23. The day’s entertainment has all the thrill of ring events and Shetland harness racing, dog ute-jumping, and novelty athletics for children. There’s also amazing feats of strength displayed in the strong-man and strong-woman competition as they demonstrate their skills in lifting enormous weights, and the wonderful polish of the vehicles in the ‘Show and Shine’. The Scarecrow competition has produced some wonderfully creative ‘beings’ and many of them will be lined up at the Sportsground for everyone to enjoy, and perhaps provide a photo opportunity. The Photography Competition entries will be hanging in the Club House, and the Super Strawberry winners will be on display. For young ones there’s the excitement of the merry-go-round and jumping castle, the chance of a sample bag from Sid the Seagull, fun and games with the Australia Zoo Croc Cruiser, cuddle and pet the animals in Party Ponies’ Animal Nursery, and look at the cria brought along by Sunline Alpacas . . . and of course, there’s also the opportunity to participate in the Pet Parade and fancy dress events. There’s great value to be had with local produce of all kinds, home-made cakes, jams and chutneys; garden plants and seedlings. Come early for the ‘cream of the crop’. And if all that makes you feel hungry, you’ll be able to refuel at the barbecue stand with burgers, sandwiches, tea and coffee and icy-cold soft drinks. Add to this, strawberry pavlovas, cheese and yoghurt from Maleny Cheese, ice creams and more. In addition, there will be many other stalls full of arts and crafts. The grand parade leads off at 1.00pm with members of the Maleny and Caboolture Light Horse troops showing the way, followed by vintage vehicles and tractors. And then the afternoon entertainment gets underway. Yvonne BarlowTurner, the Sunshine Coast Ukulele Masters and student bands from Beerwah High will be belting out music for all tastes. In all, it’s a truly great day out for all the family. Entry is only $2.00 per person, and all proceeds go to the Cancer Council Queensland to help fund research. Environment M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month
Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Great things come in small parcels
The birdlife in the Sunshine Coast hinterland provides joy for rural and town dwellers alike. However, some of our feathered friends are doing it hard, especially the smaller species, such as wrens, finches and robins. Development of more and more areas into suburban blocks, agricultural and horticultural activities are all contributing to a reduction in the habitats and foods that our small bird species need. To save these iconic species, we need to change our attitudes. Mown lawns are no longer trendy – replace them with native grasses that rarely need cutting, and with local trees and shrubs. Many small species feed on the seeds of these native grasses, fruit or nectar of local shrubs and trees, or insects. A thick understorey layer of ferns, tall grasses, and shrubs from about ground level to two metres gives security to small birds such as Thornbills, Robins, Scrub Wrens and Fairy Wrens. Diverse plantings also provide food for the insects on which many small birds feed, as well as providing nectar and fruit. Your local landcare group can give you advice on which species to plant. Water supplies are also important – we can all provide small ponds, birdbaths, or just bowls of water, located out of reach of cats and in shade, preferably with plants close by for perching. Feeding birds often attracts larger birds or even introduced species, such as Indian Myna, which outcompete smaller natives. If feed is provided, ensure it includes small seeds and nectar for our tiny avian friends.
Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? For more information on GMAN activities and nursery sales please call Cliff (5438 7118) or Gwen (5493 0029). www.gman-inc.com.au
Wax Flower Vine
Hoya australis subsp. australis
The Wax Flower Vine is often found in drier rainforest margins and in rocky areas, which makes it an ideal plant for our gardens. The flowers which appear in clusters are noted for their spectacular visual display and heavy fragrance especially in the evening. The flower cluster can be found to have 10 to 20 individual flowers. The vine itself can be found scrambling over rocks, up tree trunks, logs and along the ground in its native habitat. Wax Flower Vine makes an ideal hanging plant due to its hardiness and can be adapted to form an excellent screen.

Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Sunshine Coast (AILA), Nature Play QLD, and Parks and Leisure Association presents ‘Reconnecting Kids with Nature’ at the Maroochy Arts and Ecology Centre, Tanawha from 3.00pm to 7.30pm on Thursday, August 28. Reconnecting Kids with Nature shines the light on planning, designing and activating nature play spaces. The event will provide a development and networking opportunity for professionals interested in planning, designing or building natural play spaces (including nature based playgrounds) and professionals programing activities or the activation of these spaces. The concept of Nature Play is to increase the time children spend in unstructured play outdoors and in nature. Founded on the understanding that unstructured play outdoors – nature play – is fundamental to a full and healthy childhood, Nature Play promotes health benefits, including cognitive, social and emotional development, and it builds resilience and creativity. The event features keynote UK Speaker David Bond, filmmaker of ‘Project Wild Thing’ and key industry speakers. You will also be treated to a special screening of Project Wild Thing. If you live, work, play with or create spaces for children this event will excite your imagination and ignite ideas to get children away from their screens and interacting with nature. Tickets are $28.00 per person, including canapés and non-alcoholic drinks. Spaces are limited so bookings are essential by visiting www.aila.org.au/ QLD/EVENTS/.

Banksia oblongifolia
If you are interested in attracting native birds to your garden you can’t look far past one of our local Banksia species. The Dwarf Banksia grows from Bundaberg down to around Ulladulla in SE NSW. As its name suggests, it is a small Banksia, that grows approximately 3m high and 2m wide. It is quite bushy and produces stunning 15cm long creamy yellow flower cones that are visited by many nectar feeding birds. Its leaves are slightly serrated and have an attractive white underside. The Dwarf Banksia is very hardy in a range of soils and flowers best in full sun. No matter how big or small your yard, treat the local wildlife by planting this beautiful local plant. If you would like to find out more about some of Australia’s most amazing flora and the fauna they attract then drop in and see the team at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. The simple things in life are often the best Back in 1989, I was 10-years-old and ‘Kellogg’s Corn Flakes’ used this phrase in their TV Commercial. It’s funny because they used the phrase to encourage people to buy their product but the phrase itself is more profound that we give it credit for. Everybody knows that people are far too busy nowadays and life is far too complicated than it really should be… you don’t need me to tell you that. However, most people don’t do anything about it. Every day we wake up and race off again to whatever it is that we do. Some people feel this more than others; some people have an amazing knack of being able to deal with life in a calm, measured way. I however - am not one of those people. I am one of those people who get stressed sometimes and feel the pressure of life, work, marriage, family, paying the bills, the kids’ school work, health and all the other commitments that come on my radar. Over the years I have learned (as many of you have) the value of stopping the treadmill and just thinking about what is important. I remember when I was 18 years old camping with some friends in a remote camp ground and we all laid on our backs on the wall of a

dam looking up at the stars. It was amazing how despite how small I felt, looking up at the universe, I felt a real peace. For me that peace came from knowing that the God who created that enormous universe loved me and knew me. Nowadays, I have those moments when I am spending quality time with my wife and kids – not thinking about work or jobs I need to do. It’s like it dawns on me that this is why I am alive… to be a good husband and father. It is so simple but too often gets overlooked. So… I encourage you to find the time to stop and think about what is important for you. What were you truly created for? What are your strengths? Who are your loved ones and good friends? What sort of positive legacy do you want to leave behind when you are gone? If there things in your life that you are not happy with, what are some simple things you can do to change for the better? I believe that if we are really honest with ourselves then we will know what we need to do. God wants to help us too and give us wisdom in the decisions we make. All we have to do is pray. Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country Super Strawberry 2014 Round 7
This report from Coochin Creek Co-op sums up Round 7: ‘What a hotly contested week we have had in the Super Strawberry Competition! A huge double decker strawberry from Braetop Berries weighing in at 170g, and we thought it was all over for the week..... Then a whopper came in from Greg Harvey weighing 195 grams. This has taken over as the biggest for this season of competition.’ After a low-key start, the 2014 competition has produced some surprises. Round 8 closes at 4.00pm on Friday, August 22, and the outcome could depend on this final round. Can anyone do better than 195 grams?
Photo: supplied by Coochin Creek Co-op Thanks to the Co-op staff for their help again this year and to Beerwah Hotel for sponsoring the competition. The winner will be announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival on Saturday, August 23.
Beerwah Hotel Pro Am Success
Beerwah Ladies Golf Day
What a great day was had at Beerwah Golf Club when 211 players competed in the Annual Beerwah Hotel Pro Am. Of the field of 211, 75 were professionals, with the remaining amateurs coming from near and far to play alongside the big boys. With the support of local business such as Beerwah Hotel, Beerwah Tyres, The Big Mower, Bucks Bakery, Keast Electrical, Rene Van Beek, SPS Audit, Superior Turf Solutions and Woodlands, as well as Schweppes, CUB Fosters and Aust Cover, the Professionals came from as far as the Asian Tour to compete for a slice of the $11,000 prize pool. With a variable wind making conditions a bit tricky, no one tore the course up, with the eventual winners coming in with a 2 under par score of 70. The prize pool was shared between 3 players, Paul Maiolo, Paul Hayden and Brett Rankin. This was the 28th staging of the Pro AM which has gone from strength to strength since the inaugural event was held in 1986. This success is not only due to the generous sponsorship we receive, but also the dedication of the greens staff who prepared the course, John Mellish, our club professional, and the volunteers whose many hours of work went into making the event a highlight of the golfing calendar. Steve from Beerwah Hotel with John Mellish and joint winners Paul Maiolo, Paul Hayden and Brett Rankin
The hint of showers kept a few of our ladies away, but 51 girls came out to compete in our annual Captain V President match up. We played a Single Stableford with the sides chosen at random. When all the sums were done, and checked again, the Captain’s team came out on top this year. Better luck next year Monica ! President Monica and Captain Lea donated the trophies on the day. Due to the format of playing in teams, the winners were taken from the best in each team. The winner in the President’s team was Julie McMahon who came in with 33 points. Julie was followed by Di Flint on 32 points on a count back. Lea Doyle won the prize for the Captain’s team with 35 Captain Lea, Lea and Julie with points, with Brenda Briese President Monica runner up on 34 points. Nearest to the pins went to Di Flint on 2, Fay Barry on 5 and Jackie Collinson on the 16th. Division 1 first shot on the 18th went to Kathy Moffat, while Ruth Parish was closest with her second shot. The Random Birdie Hole went off again this week with Fay Barry scoring a 3 on the par 4, 4th hole. The ball rundown went to 31 points. This bit of rain will do the course the world of good, so come on out and have a hit. Stay safe and good golfing.

Just for Laughs Butter-side up Murphy drops some buttered toast on the kitchen floor. It lands butter-side up. He looks at what he has done in astonishment, for he knows it's a law of nature that buttered toast always falls butter-side down. He rushes round to the presbytery to fetch the priest. He tells the priest that he thinks a miracle has happened around at his flat. He won't say what it is but wants Fr Flannagan to see it with his own eyes. He brings Fr Flannagan into the kitchen and asks him what he sees on the floor. “Well," says the priest, "it's pretty obvious what we have here. Someone dropped some buttered toast, and then for some reason flipped it over so that the butter was on top." "No, Father, I dropped it and it landed like that." "Well," Fr Flannagan says, "it's certainly a

LEO July 23 – August 22 The Moon in the first three days of this week opens you up to receiving useful guidance, intuition and inspiration. Thursday and Friday constructive thinking is a positive powerful asset for getting to the bottom of what you need to improve your financial and health prospects. Be prepared to act fast. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The Cancer Moon, on Wednesday and Thursday, bring a level of emotional sensitivity. It is good if you allow your feelings to move you as benefits flow from partnerships. You will be in command and in control with your words and so by the weekend you will be planning an ambitious strategy. Secret liaison. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Early this week, in spite of a sense of misgiving, you could find by midweek there are satisfying and productive days, thanks largely to a willingness to go with the flow. Thursday and Friday means for you to follow a hunch or your intuition. You find answers to puzzling situations. A receptive audience awaits. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You are ready to access potent forces to reach your goal or achieve victory. With Mercury entering the sign of Virgo that brings smart friends who can help you. Stars in your eyes keep you from seeing the truth about someone’s alliance. Just postpone any major decisions for a day or so. You shine professionally.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This week it is time to engage in quiet thoughtful activities that will help get you in touch with subtle rhythms and psychic intuition. As the Moon moves from the sign of Gemini into Cancer it moves to what people say now that pertains to practical concerns like career or money. You should listen for clues. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Early in the week you have seen the golden opportunity to celebrate a financial indulgence. It could mark a special occasion in intimate love or economical growth. Be sure what you say, or hear, is genuine. Thursday and Friday, with the Moon in the opposite sign, that begins to outline a plan for the future. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Early this week interactions with other people are positive, prosperous and pleasure filled. In the eyes of someone who loves you, you can do no wrong. The Moon moving through the sign of Gemini and Cancer will improve any current relationship or make new friends. You have a knack for creative expression. PISCES February 20 – March 20 You will resonate to the harmonious flow of emotional energies from the nurturing Cancer Moon this Wednesday to Friday. Time to bask in its warm, soulful embrace. Do resist being drawn into any toxic relationship struggle, especially if it affects your job or your health. Take no foolish risk with money.
ARIES March 21 – April 20 Tuesday and Wednesday this week you will feel the powerful presence of the Moon in Gemini which will benefit you with great ideas on family and domestic matters. Give priority to these areas. In particular, be sweet and understanding with those whom you share bed and board. Your talents work well. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 On Thursday/Friday this week the sensitive Cancer Moon may make you more emotionally driven in a conversation than practical. It is important that there are some tender moments coming your way that require sharing of hugs. From August 22 the Sun moves into the sign of Virgo for love and creativity. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 From Monday to Wednesday of this week, you and your ideas glow with great success with the Moon in your sign. Then Thursday and Friday with the Moon in Cancer this fosters a sympathetic and sentimental feeling for familiar company and fast moving activities in house work and food preparation. CANCER June 22 – July 22 From Wednesday the Moon enters your sensitive sign and moves you to great empathy for others. Each evening there are more tender feelings, warmly shared, and hopefully some comfort food! There may be resentment or envy on you overspending, perhaps on a gift. Someone pressures over money.

natural law of the universe that dropped toast never falls butter side up. But it's not for me to say it's a miracle. I'll report the matter to the Bishop, and have him send people round, to interview you, take photos, etc." An investigation of some rigor is conducted, not only by priests of the archdiocese, but by scientists sent from the Curia in Rome. The final ruling is a negative, however. It reads: ‘It was certainly an extraordinary event that occurred in Murphy's room, quite outside the normal run of the phenomena. Yet we have to be very cautious before ruling any happening miraculous, ruling out all possible natural explanations. In this case we declared no miracle. For it was possibly the result of Murphy buttering the toast on the wrong side.’ Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah
