Hi Everyone You will have noticed that this week’s front page features the twinkling delight of our winning entrant in our Lighting Up Glasshouse Country competition. Having seen this amazing display in real life I have to say as fantastic as our photography skills are – the photo doesn’t capture the whimsy and fun that Steve and Teresa have incorporated in their design (including a snow making machine). I have had the chance to meet them and I have to say if you could capture and bottle their enthusiasm for bringing joy to our community it would be worth a fortune. And while these guys are definitely the winners, everyone has done a spectacular job, the first time entrants have taken their entries very seriously and our many other regular entrants have really stepped it up a notch! And my favourite element of the event is how more neighbours are working together and encouraging others in their street to join in, in particular in the estate that runs off Old Landsborough Road at Landsborough

and in Pacific Place at Beerwah. It is definitely worth getting in the car one night before Christmas and going for a drive, checking out all of the displays will definitely get you caught up in the festive spirit. For those of you who can’t get around them all – you can also have a look at the photos on our facebook page – www.facebook.com/ glasshousecountrynews And on a personal note Brownie and I would like to thank all of the staff who play their part in the team of Designers, Administration, Advertising, Editorial, Inserters and Deliverers who have worked hard for another year to keep you all up to date with what is happening in your streets, townships and area. Wishing everyone a truly splendid Festive Season and we look forward to catching up with you all in 2012. Regards,

News of the closure of several small hinterland service stations caused plenty of concern for the owners of Peachester General Store Graham and Joan Turton along with the local community. The business owners were left up in the air this week after receiving verbal advice that they could only continue selling petrol until their fuel supplies run out. On the eve of Christmas and the Woodford Folk Festival, with the family run business about to enter their busiest time of the year, they were concerned about the financial impact this would have on their business. Fortunately before their fuel supplies ran out Council advised them of the good news that, while they will be able to continue selling fuel, there will need to be changes made to how it is done including that only trained employees of the business are authorised to refuel customers’ vehicles or storage containers. And that the fuel bowsers will need to be locked at all other times or turned off minimise the risks identified. Graham said the fuel pump at Peachester General Store has been part of the local community for over 40 years, providing locals with an alternative to travelling down Peachester Road to Beerwah, which in one section has been reduced to one lane, for any last minute supplies, refuelling, and mower fuel.

Peachester General Store owners Graham and Joan Turton “Locals generally pick up a few supplies when they stop in for fuel, and the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade buy all their petrol and diesel from here,” Joan said. Council’s Executive Director Community Services, Coralie Nichols said that an independent report alerted council to a range of unacceptable community safety and liability risks that could not be ignored in relation to the operation of the five fuel service stations. “While council was forced to issue the directives, council staff have been working tirelessly with the Department and the operators to find solutions which would enable the service stations to significantly reduce their risk,” Ms Nichols said.

Support for sport The wider Glass House community’s sporting fraternity is set to benefit following the announcement of a new dedicated sport and recreation coordinator for the region. Council has received funding from the state government to employ a local sport and recreation coordinator as part of its plan to get more people active through sport and recreation. The role of the coordinator will include providing guidance and expert advice to a cluster of local sport and recreation clubs, divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz said. Cr Grosskreutz said Council will receive funding of $52,000 per year for three years to fund the position, which will complement the job currently done by volunteers. Specific roles will include providing advice on governance for a cluster of organisations and source appropriate support avenues, developing networks and support collaborative approaches to sport and recreation in local communities, supporting groups with grant-seeking, sponsorship, fundraising and corporate partnerships, and advising on marketing strategies and promotional activities for sport and recreation. The new coordinator will work with the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee Inc, Beerwah Bocce Club Inc, the Beerwah and District Rugby League Football Club Inc, the Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club Inc, Beerwah and District Swimming Club Inc, Glass House Districts Branch Little Athletics Centre Inc, and the Mooloolah Hinterland Churches Soccer Club Inc. President of the Glass House Little Athletics Troy De Lacey said the club was looking forward to the benefits to the club that the new role offers.

Local sport and recreation clubs like the Pony Club, top, and Beerwah Bulldogs, will benefit from the new role “From my understanding the coordinator will be able to help us with things like fundraising, grants and retaining members, roles that are currently undertaken by our committee members. “With the support and expertise of a local coordinator, we hopefully will be able to learn how to do these things better, which is important to us as we look forward to the future, and how we can grow as a club,” Troy said. This is the second appointment on the coast, with a coordinator having been appointed earlier this year to work with a host of clubs in the Noosa region.

Water savings in Beerwah Beerwah Sportsground, Beerwah Aquatic Centre and Sunshine Coast Council have been working together to make efficient use of water resources in Beerwah. Council made a recent upgrade to its pump system to enable backwash water from the Beerwah Aquatic Centre to be made available to the Sportsground for use on their football fields. Division 1 Councillor, Anna Grosskreutz said it was a fantastic example of community groups, council and business working together on sustainable solutions for the area. She said the Beerwah Sportsground will make huge financial savings through reduced irrigation costs. Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee Vice President, Bob McLean said 80,000 litres of water is now available every week for the football fields.

Beerwah Sportsground management committee vice president Bob McLean, Cr Grosskreutz and caretaker Ray Hawkins at the Beerwah Sportsground

“The water was previously going to waste, now it will save the sportsground committee thousands of dollars a year. It’s a great outcome for everyone,” Mr McLean said. Caretaker, Ray Hawkins said there has been a lot of activity on the two football fields at the Beerwah Sportsground recently. “The fields at the Sportsground have been pounded by foot traffic over many years and the surface had become very compacted,” said Mr Hawkins. “The community responded to a call for assistance and provided many hours of volunteer work to have the fields cored, aerated, top dressed and fertilised. The fields were also treated to control unwanted weeds and grass and then watered to get the grass growing. He said 40 metres of poly pipe and a couple of valves were installed, with the water now being used through a travelling irrigator to water the two playing fields.

New plant nursery for Barung Landcare Barung Landcare will soon have its wish for a fully operational native plant nursery, thanks to Sunshine Coast Council. Divisional Councillor Anna Grosskreutz said Barung Landcare had a large number of members keen to see the development of the nursery in their area, and council had agreed to enter into a commercial lease on Forestry Road in Landsborough. Barung Landcare is committed to building a native plant nursery in Landsborough that will supply the surrounding area with tube stock from locally collected seed.

President of the Barung Landcare Association Eric Anderson said that council had helped with their vision of turning the site, an abandoned ostrich farm, into a native plant nursery. He said many volunteers had worked hard throughout the year removing weeds, painting offices and removing rubbish, with Council assisting by levelling two large pads and providing road base so that a propagation and tube stock hardening off area could be installed. Barung Landcare currently has 800 members but is always looking for more, as well as the use of an excavator and bull dozer to further progress the development of the nursery.

Meet your 2011 Good Neighbours Contributed by Sheila Williams At the December meeting of the Beerwah NHWQ, the ‘Good Neighbour of the Year’ award and shield was presented to Fred and Joyce Carr. Fred and Joyce were nominated by Suzanne Hoey, the Director of Care at Embracia in Glasshouse Country, for their volunteer work at Embracia since 2006. D Day for litterers is here! Watch out cigarette butt flickers and illegal dumpers! People are watching and now have the power to report your wayward ways. The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) have developed on online reporting form people can submit to dob in a litterer or dumper. Cerran Fawns, CEO of Maroochy Waterwatch, is quietly excited about the opportunity this presents in reducing the amount of rubbish that ends up in our rivers and oceans. "People don't realise that when they flick a butt, drop a can, or worse still, dump trailer loads of rubbish into the environment, that most of it makes its way into our beautiful waterways." "Litter pollutes the water quality and can have disastrous impacts on our native animals and ocean life," she added. The litterer reporting form is now available on DERM's website. People need to make note of

the vehicle or vessel they are driving, along with the registration details and actions of the littering offence. A fine will be issued to the owner of the vehicle and to ensure integrity of the reporting, people need to be willing to go to court if needed. This year, from the Maroochy River alone, almost 35,000 litres of rubbish was collected. “That is 145 large wheelie bins of rubbish, weighing around seven tonnes, of mainly bottles, plastics and miscellaneous items. These figures do not include the larger items like tyres, fridges and couches that are dumped in the river,” Ms Fawns said. In 2011, Queensland is the most littered state according to Keep Australia Beautiful's National Litter Index. To dob in a litterer or dumper, go to https://www.derm.qld.gov.au/environmental_ management/waste/reportit

Bringing Christmas cheer

Once again this year Christmas hampers were put together by Beerwah High School students on behalf of the school Interact Club, students and teachers. The hampers were delivered to St Vincent de Paul at Landsborough on the last Thursday of the school year. The girls seen here had spent time gathering together donations from other students and teachers who all contributed with much generosity, shopping, wrapping presents and assembling the baskets. They did an excellent job. Our best wishes to the recipient families for a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Getting the low down on economic climate The Commonwealth Bank recently had their Comsec Economist Savanth Sebastian as a guest speaker at a business breakfast. Savanth gave the latest commentary on the economic conditions and what they mean for businesses. He speculated that the local economy will not see any major improvements for the next 12 to 18 months. Readers may recognise Savanth from his television appearances on ‘Sunrise’.

Community Group Updates

Beerwah Writers Group Contributed by Kate Wright

This year's Christmas social for the Beerwah Writers Group, families and friends, was hosted by David and Jo at their lovely Peachester home. This year two members have had books published. Martin Pedder 'I Pilate', his fascinating semibiographical story of Pontius Pilate giving insight into a world and a man, whose actions for one moment of time have been recorded for ever. Martin in his book expands on the life of Pilate before and after the crucifixion giving us person and events that shaped him. My fifth book 'Your Neighbours -The Gypsies in Australia’, was published in June and has already gone into its second edition. Next year's work is planned to concentrate on the group's own book, to showcase the very diverse and interesting work that individual members are producing. Science fiction, family history, poetry, fiction and non-fiction - there will be something for everyone between its covers. Look for its illustrations; some of our members are showing great talents in that direction and as a group we harness every talent available. In the group we now have our own qualified editors, proof readers and are looking at design for book covers, all of which are part of being a writer these days. E-books have not been forgotten, as they are the modern way to publish. Being a writer has changed dramatically since the days of Dickens. During our party several grannies were seen huddled in a corner obviously planning something special. But we were told to wait for next year's meetings for the mystery to be solved. The first meeting for 2012 is Friday, January 27 at Beerwah Library.

Peachester CWA Contributed by Coral Beutel

Peachester didn’t do so well at Conference this year with only one prize in cooking, Joan Kropp’s ginger cake getting second place and Coral Beutel’s ‘Song Title’ received first prize and third for ‘Fruit and Foliage’ in the floral art competition. What a wonderful welcome we received in Charters Towers after the train trip to Townsville left 13 ladies with cakes, flowers etc sitting on the platform to wait six hours for the bus to Charters Towers. The conference was held in the ‘World Centre’ one of the best venues I have been to, our accommodation was good and the food tasty and well presented. Our Christmas markets on Saturday, November 26 were really well attended. Thank you to all the stall holders and the school P and C for running the canteen, and the public for their patronage. The next markets are on February 25. December 1 was our Christmas break up. First prize in our Christmas raffle went to Craig Vaughn, second prize Nola Bale and third Rob Morris. Our branch donated two Bursaries to two pupils at Peachester State School, congratulations Emma and Ruby, also to all the Year 7’s who not only decorated the venue but also catered. A book written by Norma Lovelace QCWA State Archivist entitled ‘Service to the Country by QCWA in times of peace and war’ was presented to the library by branch president Coral Beutel. To all the people who helped or patronised our events thank you so much. To Lea and her staff thank you for your help and the way you present our news and advertisements. The Peachester CWA branch wishes all a Merry Christmas and a happy healthy new year. God Bless.

As another year draws to a close the committee and nursery crew from GMAN would like to thank everyone who has supported their plant sales and other projects throughout 2011. Our plant sales have been particularly successful and every dollar spent helps to support the environment. Our plants will be available until Friday, December 23, and remember that at $6.00, our Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines make excellent Christmas gifts. For the children we now have stocks of a beautiful new book, ‘Birdwings’ New Home’, by Lynette Reilly and Lois Hughes, which accurately tells the

story of the recovery of the butterfly. These books retail at $13.00, and all profits go to the production of the Pararistolochia praevenosa vine which is the host plant for the butterfly larvae. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to meeting up with many of you in the New Year. Phone 5493 0029 for plant and book sales.

Peachester District Horticulture Society Inc Contributed by Patricia Bradford, publicity officer

A warm welcome was extended to members and visitors for our November meeting, the final one for the year. Special guest, Maggie Cattanach, a representative from the Sunshine Coast Council, spoke briefly about visions planned for the future in our local area. Sally Joyce gave an update on the progress of the school garden. Margaret Ferris organised the Floral Art Society of Queensland Conference in Cairns recently, where guests from all states and the Soloman Islands attended. Results of the competition bench for October, first Margaret Ferris, second Kath Howitt. After the meeting, some members visited Debbie’s garden. A newcomer to our area, members helped her identify plants growing in her garden. Members enjoyed our Christmas break-up at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on November 29. Special guest speaker Bob McLean entertained us with a talk about the formation of the Glasshouse Country Menshed and the various activities and discussions that take place. Bob touched briefly on men’s health issues and then spoke about growing bromeliads. The next meeting will be on Thursday, January 19, 9.30am in the Peachester Hall. Visitors are always welcome. An extract from an open letter to the Fisher electorate from Peter Slipper MP

As you’ve undoubtedly heard, I have been given the great honour of being elected unopposed as the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the Australian Parliament. This role affords me, your local representative, the capacity to extend further my ability to showcase this extraordinary area I have proudly represented for the past 21 years. I am doing this for a number of reasons. I truly do intend to be an Independent Speaker in the Westminster tradition and I hope that this sets a precedent, which will be followed by all Speakers in future Australian Parliaments. I am looking forward to working with all members of the House, regardless of where they stand politically. I strongly believe that the British tradition of an Independent Speaker strengthens the Parliament as an institution; and enables the Speaker to act without fear or favour and without being beholden to Government or Opposition. I note that on four separate occasions in September 2010, my friend Tony Abbott, the Leader of the Opposition, said that his preference was to have an Independent Speaker in the Westminster tradition, he now has one! Consequently, after many years of membership of the National Party, the Liberal Party and most recently the Liberal National Party, I have relinquished my party membership to fulfil my undertaking to the Parliament. I must say that I have been encouraged in this opportunity to serve the Parliament in a new way by recent actions over the last 12 months of some people in the Liberal National Party of Queensland. Rest assured however my conservative political principles have not altered. CONTINUES To read this letter in full, visit http://www. peterslippermp.com.au/category/media/

Sincere Thanks

Glyn Morris 2 September 1921 – 24 November 2011 Sonya, Tracey and their family thank the Beerwah and Glasshouse communities for all the expressions of Sympathy on the passing of Glyn Morris. Glyn was the loving husband of Sonya and loving father of Tracey and family. The memories of good times will stay with us always. The care and support offered in the recent months and weeks; and the overwhelming attendance at Glyn’s Funeral Service are testament to the Gentle Man he was. The compassion, kind words and deeds have been helpful to us and we thank you all. Sonya Morris and Tracey Pain Beerwah

A matter of perspective

In response to Coral Madgwick's letter to the Editor last week; I would not dispute for one moment the fantastic work that Bridgette and Paula Powers do for Twinnies Pelican Seabird Rescue. This is why I was more than happy to donate my spare change in the said dented tin at the Coochin Creek Co-op a while ago. Isn't this just a case of making a mountain out of a molehill? For all you know, the tin may have been accidentally damaged. It wasn't as if the donation tin was stolen. Please gain some perspective. The Coochin Creek Co-op allows other donation tins on their counter. Instead of criticising them, we should congratulate the Co-op and other civic-minded businesses, which do a lot of charitable work in Glasshouse Country throughout the year. As a customer, I want to thank the Co-op staff for all they do and wish them a Merry Christmas. Judy Simms, Beerwah

In reply to The Battered Hat from Commissioner’s Flat (GCNews December 14), do not be mislead, the RSL clubs are clubs just like any other. Because people find the behaviour of certain people who are involved in these establishments offensive this does not mean they do not respect the Australian Service Men and Women and it does not mean that the people running these clubs represent the true Service men either. The constant dramas at the RSL club are not a reflection on anyone but the individuals involved in the running of this establishment. I have not seen anywhere lately where the new RSL Club has put any money back into the community rather they have hurt the small businesses who once had constant trade with the successful Club that once operated from these premises. In the short time I have lived in this area I do remember how much the previous Community Club known as the Beerwah RSL Club put into our community. Remember Clubs are not where we go to honor our hero's, this is done on days such as Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and the likes where we gather at a cenotaph erected in their honor, or for those of us who have loved ones who were or who are still in the services, we remember and respect them every day. Danita Black Beerwah

Minister declines meeting

In keeping with my commitment to keep Peachester locals updated on progress with upgrades to Peachester Range Road I write to inform readers that the Minister for Main Roads has declined to attend or arrange a community meeting. The Minister is quoted as saying; "I am advised that the Department of Transport and Main Roads is implementing a broad communications campaign in regard to the construction works to be carried out on this road. It is expected that dissemination of this information directly to the community will be more timely and effective than arranging a public forum." Like many in the community I am disappointed by this response. In the absence of any direct community briefing I continue to encourage concerned constituents to contact my office. Nutrition Matters is a fantastic program that takes away the guess work and helps work out your weekly menu for the whole family. Once you’re set up, you drive it from the comfort of your own home along with weekly support or any additional follow ups you may need. Fed up with going from one diet to the next with no long term results? Fitness Matters’ member Sheridan said Nutrition Matters is an awesome online tool that allows her to monitor her daily calorie intake. “I can also look up new recipes, and record the exercise I do. I certainly don’t feel like I’m on a diet as I can eat whatever I want (within reason!) as long as the exercise I do burns more calories than I consume. I can enjoy my favourite foods knowing that I am still reaching all my goals!

Nutrition Matters monitors members daily calorie intake Sadly, facts show that we are now living in a society where obesity, particularly in children, is increasing each year. Nutrition Matters helps to address this by making the meal choices healthy and nutritious yet still food we all enjoy. It really is the perfect solution to bringing a healthier lifestyle into the family home. See our website for reduced Christmas hours and the group fitness timetable.

Merry Christmas from the Grafx Group It’s that time of the year for sending out your Christmas cards. Whether you send them by post or email, it is more rewarding to make your own original cards to send to your family and friends. To make your Christmas card, go to Photoshop (or your preferred program) and start with a new document. In the picture shown a gradient background was applied. Using brushes a second layer was created. The brush used was a Christmas Tree brush which you can make yourself or download from the internet. A different sized brush was used on each layer, three layers with three different sized trees. A snowflake brush was applied next on its own layer to give the picture a wintry look. A snowman was added (make your own, use clipart or download free images). If using other people’s work, be aware of copyright rules. Next came the baubles, again on their own layers and re-sized for a more effective look, followed by a Christmas wreath. Having images on their own layers gives you the ability to change them around so that they are pleasing to the eye. Once your picture is complete your text is added. Your text may be changed again and again to suit your personal messages. You are now ready to send your card or have it printed. Be ready with your cameras to take Christmas photographs to use on next year’s Christmas cards. Have a safe and Merry Christmas! U3A Beerwah Grafx Group meets each Thursday at Beerwah Library.

Christmas survival guide for slimmers Best-selling low-fat cookbook author and weight loss expert Annette Sym has launched a new Christmas Survival Guide to help slimmers get through the festive season without stacking on the kilos. The new FREE e-book contains lots of tips and strategies for surviving the party season and Christmas Day, as well as loads of delicious, lowfat recipes such as Festive Ice-Cream Pudding, Christmas Cake, Fruit Mince Pies, Mexican Dip and Mango Trifle. Annette, author of the Symply Too Good To Be True cookbook series, said although Christmas was a special time of year, it was also one of the most challenging times for people watching their weight. "I'm not just talking about Christmas Day, but all those weeks leading up to the festive period." "It all adds up to temptation, temptation, temptation! "I wanted to create this survival guide to help people stay on track and enjoy the Christmas period without paying too high a price for the merriment in the New Year." Annette's Christmas Survival Guide is a FREE resource and can be ordered online at www.symplytoogood.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

From Jenny McKay Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Mobile: 0409 450 726 Personal message As Christmas approaches I want to say ‘thank you’, it has been a pleasure working with residents of Division 5 for the past year. I hope you and your families have a wonderful and safe Christmas and a Happy New Year. Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare Inc. Congratulations to the team for another wonderful year in environment protection and restoration. Some of their achievements this year have been the South Parkland, recreation grounds in Mooloolah and the Gubbi Gubbi Dyngungoo property. They also celebrate 1 million trees being planted over the past 10 years. The office will be closed from December 21- January 16 but Jan is happy to be contacted on 0407 641 327, should there be any environmental concerns that need attention. Mooloolah - Rain Tree Place Road After considerable consultation council will progress the equitable access/ pedestrian access to the park. This will allow the residence entry into the park more easily so that they can enjoy the natural amenity. New book remembers and celebrates the gifting of ‘the reserve’ At a special ceremony held on Monday, December 12 at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve I co-hosted the launch of the book ‘Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve: My Tribute to Bessie Thynne, Benefactor’ together with the author, Jeanette Nobes. A number of dignitaries were amongst the 50 special guests present at the event including Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AC and Mr Stuart McCosker. In 1941 Elizabeth (Bessie), Mary and Mabel Thynne were visionary in recognising the value of the rainforest and scenic outlook on their land and gifted the reserve for everyone to enjoy. This act of generosity will forever honour their mother Mary Cairncross. I feel very privileged to have been granted this opportunity to host the launch of this wonderful, insightful book. The book is available from Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and I would encourage you to go and see it for yourself. www.gcnews.com.au

Bells, balls and whistles!

It started with an ornament from a bottle of perfume she received in her teens. Today, Beth Hodge’s collection of Christmas tree ornaments numbers in the hundreds, and ranges from everything from a bauble to a Barbie doll. Beth’s Christmas tree stands at around seven and a half feet (nearly 230cm) tall, and is covered with more than 100 unique decorations. Nothing too surprising in that, but there’s more. Beth has at least enough decorations, still in storage, to decorate another six foot tall tree. So what of this eclectic collection of ornaments, many of which hail from around the world? “I don’t really know why I started collecting them, but I just love getting them out and decorating the tree at Christmas,” Beth said. It’s a tradition that she now shares with her daughter Andrea, exchanging decorations every year, and she is also adding regularly to her collection thanks to friends and family, who, knowing her penchant for them, pick up an ornament for Beth as a souvenir of their travels.

From New Zealand to Hong Kong, Germany and Norfolk Island, and throughout the United States, Beth’s collection includes mostly Hallmark decorations, as well as a range of more unusual ones, such as a Santa who cycles on an exercise bike while eating cookies. “My favourite would have to be a bauble made of glass derived from the historic explosion at Mount St Helen in 1980, along with two fairytale castles,” Beth said. There’s a story for nearly every one, but none as special as Beth’s unusual passion.

Christmas messages from Glasshouse Heinrich Rusterholz Landsborough Adventist Community Church

Pastor Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church With only about a week to go before Christmas I have some great advice for all the male readers of GCNews… stay away from the shops from now until the New Year! It is chaos out there if you’re like me, and love to avoid shopping at the best of times. But I guess it is sometimes necessary when you have to do your last minute Christmas shopping. Speaking of gifts, I found out what was so special about the three gifts offered to the baby Jesus by the Wise Men. Apart from the fact that they were a nice gesture and very expensive, the elements themselves have a great significance for whom they believed Jesus to be. Frankincense is a resin from the sap of the Boswellia tree, having great medicinal qualities and even used as a treatment for depression. When burned as incense, it was believed to carry the prayers for the people by the priest to God as the smoke rose upward. Jesus was to become the Priest of all priests, being the only necessary mediator between God and men. Myrrh was used as anointing oil as well as an embalming treatment for those who had died and were to be buried - just like the Egyptian mummies. This signified the fact that he was born to one day be anointed, killed, and buried in a tomb as the sacrifice to end all other need for sacrifices, the all-encompassing payment for the sin of humankind. And finally, gold, seen as valuable in all ages and culture, this was the most appropriate gift for the one chosen to be the King of all kings, just like we sing about at Christmas. As we reflect on the message behind these gifts offered to Christ, I wonder if he means those things to you this Christmas. Have an awesome holiday and see you next year!

Christmas has come upon us very quickly. It is a time that many families get together and share the Christmas spirit. We are all nice to each other, however often there are issues underneath, sometimes deep issues. We put on a happy face for Christmas. This could be an opportunity for healing because God the ultimate healer sent His son to pay the price for us to be forgiven, to bring healing and reconciliation in the family. So this Christmas could be the time to start afresh in your family, whether it is forgiveness, reconciliation or something else. It can start with one individual - with you. The outcome however, depends on everyone else involved and their attitude towards it; whether it is positive or negative. Very often we sit together with a pile of dirt under the carpet and no one dares to mention it. We go on pretending to play the game. When God sent Jesus He took a risk and so do we when we want to pick up the pile of dirt from under the carpet. So what will it be for you this Christmas? Jesus and His Father showed us the way. Forgiveness, reconciliation, peace and restoration of relationships.

Rev Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church Glasshouse Country Baptist Church wishes you a blessed and special Christmas. We hope that you will take some time to think about the real meaning of Christmas. It's not about giving and receiving of gifts, or even spending time with family and friends, rather it’s celebrating the time that God became a man and lived among us. This really is the most exciting event to have ever happened.

Pastor Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church

John Stevenson Glasshouse Country Anglican Church Christmas is often a rushed and stressful time of year. So it was also on that first Christmas. Joseph and Mary had travelled a long way, on dusty and dangerous roads, from their home in Nazareth to Bethlehem. Mary, probably all of about 14-yearsold and heavily pregnant, and her much older fiancé Joseph, found there was a Christmas rush in Bethlehem. All the pubs were booked out as the population came pouring into the small town to fulfil census obligations. Joseph’s anxiety must have turned, at least momentarily, to panic as he worried about their accommodation prospects and where Mary ought to have her child. Joseph did what we all have to do; he made the best of it with what little he had. That happened to be a cattle shelter and a feed trough. The heart of the Christmas message is the birth of Jesus, in tough circumstances and how, as a family, they overcame those difficulties. May God bless us all this Christmas and especially those families doing it tough!

Glasshouse Country Anglican Church

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas from all the crew at the Glasshouse Community Church. You may have noticed that this year we are not having a service at all on Christmas day, which might seem a little strange, being the biggest day on the Christian calendar. The truth is that most families in our little congregation will be away camping or holidaying somewhere, my family included. Anyhow, I pray you experience something of the true meaning of Christmas this year and have a safe holiday. Here’s a little poem with the Christmas message in a nutshell. Out of eternity, out of His love, God gave His best gift-Jesus came from above. The King as a servant, the shepherd, a lamb, The Potter as clay, Son of man. He came as a baby, homeless and poor; And centuries later, still knocks at the door. He’s God’s gift of life, as He’s been from the start, With no need for an inn if there’s room in your heart. Bless you and see you in church - New Years day!

Country Ministers Fellowship members George Woodward Glasshouse Country Uniting Church

Almost 30 years ago I was leading a Christmas service in a very isolated Aboriginal community in North Australia. These were by Australian standards very poor people. After we had taken up an offering, one of the older men asked where were the envelopes for the poor people? They knew about giving to the poor at Christmas. I had the envelopes with me and humbled by their request, handed them out. I watched as the old man who had asked for the envelopes put $50.00 in his envelope. I knew he would have gone without himself to give this money to help ‘the poor people.’ Now I don’t pretend to understand all about Christmas when a baby was born in an obscure country in an obscure place over 2,000 years ago. In this baby we believe we see God and God’s love for the whole created universe but I think I see something of that God in a community of very poor people giving generously to help the poor people in the world. May you know the blessing of that love this Christmas.

Final service for Rev George

Rev George Woodward lit the candles on Chris Bell’s 70th birthday cake at Glasshouse Country Uniting Church recently. After serving our community for four and a half years, our popular minister’s final service will be on Christmas Day at 7.30am. A special farewell service for George’s retirement will be held at the Uniting Church on Sunday afternoon January 15, and members of the local community are invited to attend. More news next year. Pastors John and Thelie Hobbs Praise House Church ‘Peace on Earth’ is a phrase you see everywhere around Christmas time. For many of us, we have to wonder where that peace is. Whether it's trying to find peace in the busy-ness of our own lives or trying to wrap our heads around hope for world political peace, ‘peace on earth’ can sure seem elusive: but we have hope! Jesus was born to bring peace on earth! ‘Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled,’ is a line in a Christmas carol that gives a picture of Jesus as God’s gift of peace to us. Jesus was the perfect example of ‘peace’ lived out; He demonstrated the kind of peace we all long for. He always treated people with respect, wisdom and love. He brought peace to those around Him, and He ultimately wants to bring peace between us and God. Many people are searching for God's peace. The truth is He has promised it to us already and it is always available to us any time of the year! We just need to have faith to receive it! May God’s peace be yours this Christmas!

Pastors Rod and Rhonda Jobe Church on the Rise The first six letters of Christmas speak of the person that changed the world forever. He is the most famous person in all of human history. More songs have been sung to him, artwork created of him, and books written about him, than anyone who has ever lived. In fact, Jesus looms so large over human history that we actually measure time by him; our calendar is divided into the years before and after his birth, noted as B.C. (‘before Christ’) and A.D. (anno domini, meaning ‘in the year of the Lord’). No army, nation, or person has changed human history to the degree that Jesus has. Some 2,000 years after he walked the earth, Jesus remains as influential as ever. One thing that remains about Jesus is that you cannot Ignore Him. This Christmas time again calls us to consider him as the Saviour of the world. From everyone at Church on the Rise we pray that you have a Happy Christmas.

Well deserved Christmas cheer for Chappy

Beerwah High School Chaplaincy Committee held a breakfast meeting to bring the year's activities to a close. It was catered for by the ladies of the Uniting Church and Chaplain Mike Turner took the opportunity to thank all who had supported him throughout the year. On behalf of the Glasshouse Country Anglican Church Deb Ball Committee, District Warden John Innes handed over a cheque for $4,074.00 for Chaplaincy. Pictured with Mike and John is Treasurer Graham Nicholson, right.

Mike Turner Beerwah State High School Chaplain I would like to say all the best to those students graduating from school this year and preparing for a brand new adventure in 2012. I pray that God will keep you safe and give you wisdom as you make preparations for your future. To all the mums and dads out there - enjoy a well deserved rest during your holiday period. To the kids - be good to mum and dad and don't stress them out too much :) I believe that God loves family, friends and celebration - he invented it! But in the midst of Christmas shopping, lunches, dinners and travelling, I encourage you to have a think about your relationship with your creator God who made you and loves you and wants you to get to know him too. Happy Christmas!!!

Things 2 Do Beerwah’s Got Country, and Tori Darke Beerwah’s got Country kicks off with a bang in 2012 with the return of Australia’s most promising female Country Music Star Tori Darke. This will be Tori’s third visit to Beerwah and it would seem that the Sunshine Coast just can’t get enough of this emerging superstar. With an album that has netted her four Top 5 singles so far this young lady has already achieved more than some dream a life time to fulfill. Tori’s voice is sublime but she can rock with the best of them and with a sensational band you’re in for a great night of modern country rock with arguably Australia’s best female vocalist. Tori and her band will hit the stage at 8.00pm on Saturday, January 14 at the Beerwah Hotel so why not book in for the Coast’s best steak and then stick around to see why Beerwah loves Tori Darke.

Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club Contributed by Dr Michael Whiticker

A great night was had by the 30 or so people who attended the Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club at the Sports Club last Thursday, December 8. Among the performers were Ian Willams, who included a magical instrumental version of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ on his new yamaha silent guitar – a fold up guitar which has no body to speak of, but makes a very impressive nylon string sound. He was then joined on stage by Paul Fagan and yours truly to perform some Paul Kelly songs. Paul Fagan and I also backed Paul Mckenna who entertained us with his powerful voice. Here is one singer you must catch! His version of Roy Orbison’s In Dreams may not display the exquisite falsetto that Roy produced, but it is heart-felt and just as engaging. A special performance for the night was some Christmas songs from Frank Moroney. Thank you Frank for making all the effort. New-comer Peter Gawith from Peachester sang and showed what an impressive finger style guitarist he is and Mick Od gave us some more of his thoughtful, original songs. Sheree and Michael Bochow performed beautifully and included a searing version of Gary Moore’s ‘Still got the blues’ in their set. Sadly Gary Moore recently died, but his legacy remains in songs such as this which affirm, as Mark Knopfler had earlier done in ‘The Sultans of Swing’ or Jimi Hendrix in ‘All along the watchtower’, that the great electric guitar solo can be the backbone of not just a great song, but also a set! The Musos Club is held on the second Thursday of the month, and we hope to see lots of new performers at our next session on January 12.

Home and Property Guide Keeping your property safe

You’ve serviced the car, booked the dog into the kennel, and organised with your neighbours to collect your mail and water the plants. But have you thought about ensuring your home is safe and secure? The Department of Communities has put together some useful hints on ways to help keep your property safe, for those times when you are home and away. What should I do to help prevent my home being burgled? • Lock doors and windows when you go out. • Lock screen doors when you are at home. • Ask a trusted neighbour to collect your mail and keep an eye on your home while you are away. • Turn down your phone and cancel milk and paper deliveries while you are away.

• Keep ladders and tools locked away so there is nothing handy that a thief can use to enter your home.

• Hang up if you get an unpleasant or unusual call – don’t speak

to the person. If nuisance calls persist, keep a record of them and contact your telephone service provider and the police. • Pretend there is someone else in the house if someone unknown to you is at your door or on the phone. Call to a ‘make believe’ partner or friend and say something like ‘it’s okay, I’ve got it’. • Check the identification of any service or repair people before you unlock the security screen door. What are some things I shouldn’t do around my home? • Don’t leave your keys in hiding places such as under the doormat or pot plants. • Don’t mark your keys with your name and address. • Don’t leave messages on doors – they suggest no-one is home. • If you are expecting parcels, have a trusted neighbour collect them. • Consider leaving a light or the television on when going out, to create the impression someone is at home. BIGGEST AND BEST RESIDENTIAL TOWNHOUSES IN THE HINTERLAND! • Keep cash and valuables out of sight. • Don’t tell too many people that you are going away and leaving your home empty. NOW EVEN BETTER VALUE • Don’t let a stranger into your home to use your phone or check your appliances unless you are sure it is safe. • Don’t give your name, phone number, address, or any other details about yourself or someone you live with to unknown telephone callers. • Don’t leave your keys or bag in your car while transferring groceries or packages from the car to your home. • Don’t confront an intruder in your home – leave your home and Brilliant location – Middle of town – “Open” green setting; contact the police from a neighbour’s house. and short walk (few hundred metres) to major shops and rail. what they don’t realise is that inside the walls of your concrete water tank there is steel reinforcing, and the only way steel can expand when encased in concrete is to make cracks. What sets your business apart from others that may offer a similar service? It’s now quite common to inspect water tanks when buying and selling property. Because I have built water tanks I know what to look for when cleaning your water tank, and I can provide a free expert inspection of your tank. Why should readers give you a call? It amazes me the amount of tanks I see that have problems and are deteriorating. Your water tank is an investment. Have you priced one to see how much they are worth now? I see a lot of tanks with cracks and white calcium marks, and people don’t realise how damaging they are to your water tank. They think the cracks are not leaking much water but

Blood, Sweat and Cheers

Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country A formula for formula success?

For two Mooloolah Valley teens, the wheels are certainly well in motion when it comes to big dreams and fast cars. Dylan Vuille and Rhys Hampson may have only just graduated from high school, but they have their feet firmly planted on the pedal and their sights set firmly on the future when it comes to their shared passion of go karting. Earlier this year both boys, keenly supported by their parents, took on the sport and they’re already making a speedy progress through the ranks. The sport, which rarely makes headlines is an expensive one, and both boys are on the lookout for sponsors to support them in their quest for raceway glory. “At the moment, our parents help us out, but in order to really pursue it and take the next step we’d love to get some support from the local community, whether it be with tyres, oil or other supplies, or financial support,” Dylan said. For the two 17-year-olds, go karting is as much about the adrenalin and competition as it is about the support and passion of the tight knit go carting community. “As much as it’s competitive, out at the raceway, there is just as much support amongst riders and their support crew,” Rhys said. And according to Rhys’s dad Brad, it’s also proving to be a great father-son sport. “Many sports these days are more about the individual or the team, this one is a collaborative approach between the driver and his crew,” Brad said. If you would like to offer some form of support to Dylan or Rhys, contact their parents, Alex Vuille on 5494 7091 or 0423 472 674 or Brad Hampson on 5494 7266 or 0404 081 880.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club members Jim Tatum, Robbie Dean and Jackie Hineman spent last Tuesday morning with 17 children from Glasshouse and Maleny ABC Centres. The Children certainly learnt that bowls was a great sport for all ages with their teachers having a hard time getting them off the green when it was time to go home.

Social gatherings for singles

The group has been growing in numbers, dinners out and ten pin bowling have been the primary activities. Some of the places being frequented are the Pineapple Patch, Bombay Bliss, Alexander Headlands 10 pin bowls, Alex Surf Club, and Caboolture Sports Club. The last night out at Caboolture was deemed to be the best night so far by the singles that went along. The interests of those who are attending are varied, and so not everyone will want to go to everything organised, but weekly outings are planned and attended by a few regulars, and so any new singles will feel welcomed. Please contact 0437 792 345 to register your interest, so it will give us an idea of what numbers to book for.

Glasshouse Country Tohm's A-Z of Gardening Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 I have been looking from my office window over the past month trying to decide on the plant I was going to share with you this time. I had hoped it was going to be Aechmea nudicaulis. In Autumn I set some pups to make an Aechmea Christmas Tree, but the flowers have not all come out yet so I will share this with you next year. Another very striking plant which I will share with you is bromeliad Alcantarea regina. The Alcantarea genus was once a part of the Vriesea genus, with long strappy soft leaves. This genus had only a small number of species, the genus now has 27 in the species listing by the Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies and 15 cultivars. The Alcantarea genus all come from eastern Brazil and are mostly very large plants. These plants usually grow in well-drained soil perched high on rocky cliffs. This spectacular genus has been in demand as feature plants in any garden with a little bit of space. The plants will mostly grow to one metre in diameter, with the flower reaching over two metres. This genus is easy to propagate from seed or the pups set around the base of the mother plant. The Alcantarea will grow in full sun or semi-shade. In full sun the plant will show its best colour. They enjoy a good feed and a drink to develop the plant into a real show piece, this plant will enjoy a little more nitrogen (N) than other broms but will still require high potassium (K) to maintain the colour in the plant. If you would like to learn more about growing bromeliads join us for our next meeting on February 5 – GCNews will publish meeting details in January. The society wishes you a Happy and Safe Christmas and New Year. If you are looking for a present with a long life, make it a bromeliad.

D is for Dalechampia

Imagine having large magenta coloured butterflies in your garden. And they won’t produce leaf munching grubs. That’s what it seems like when you grow the Dalechampia aristolochiifolia. Commonly known as the Silk Crepe Flower, this climber from the Euphorbiaceae family will produce its flowers throughout most of the year. And what stunning blooms they are. As with many plants in this family, it is not the petals which produce the display, rather the bracts, modified leaves just below the flower. The Silk Crepe Flower is a relatively easy plant to grow. It can handle full sun or part shade. Provide it with a structure to grow over, such as an arbour or a trellis where its soft, pale green leaves will provide a perfect contrast to the showy blooms. Plant into a moist, humus rich soil and ensure a steady water flow. Being from the tropics it can handle high temperatures, but it can also survive very low temperatures. Frosts will burn the leaves and younger shoots, but as long as the frost does not last, the plant will recover. Dalechampia, as with all Euphorbia, produces a milky, caustic sap which can cause a reaction on sensitive skin. Wear gloves and avoid rubbing your eyes when handling the plant to be on the safe side. When I discovered this plant in a friend’s garden, it was one of those moments when I thought, ‘where has this Ph: 5439 0999 plant been all my life?’ Fax: 5439 0077 I highly recommend you paintplacebeerwah@tpg.com.au 1/28 Simpson St, Beerwah Q. 4519 meet one this weekend.

When visiting my daughter recently I was met by my very excited three-year-old granddaughter who announced (even before saying hello) that it would soon be Christmas and she had put all the decorations up by herself (oh well, OK maybe a ‘little’ help from mummy). I was taken on a guided tour and was pleased to see a beautiful nativity scene. I felt proud my daughter was teaching my granddaughter the true meaning of Christmas and so I asked “Jodie, do you know that that is?” she replied in a most indignant voice “of course I do Grandma..... it’s breakable.”
