s you read this column I have already signed off for 2016, and have now moved all of my headspace into ‘Relax and Enjoy’ mode for the next three weeks. It has been a very big year for the newspaper and our team. Earlier in the year we marked 30 years of sharing the news, events, sports and generally what’s been going on in our area throughout that time. And our next task on the to-do list, is having the whole now 30-plus years of editions placed online and available for people to read at any time. This year we also officially became the only weekly newspaper to be delivered not just into Glasshouse Country, but into homes in Maleny and bulk drop dropped across the Range, so we have had plenty to learn and lots of great support and interest from the community. However, our focus for the next three long weeks is all about time out. The office is closed until Wednesday, January 11 and then you will see a revived and enthusiastic team GC&M News return to work for another exciting year in 2017. Have a great Festive Season and I look forward to talking to you all once again next year – our first edition will be January 18.

Limited tickets are still available to what will be one of the biggest New Year’s Eve parties in the Hinterland, with nonstop live music – and this family friendly night will see one ticket holder walk away $10,000 richer. Along with this major prize, another 10 winners will win back the cost of their ticket: $100.00. There is no catch, you must have a prepurchased ticket to gain entry on the night and be part of the draw. The ticket gives two people 18 and over entry into the event and entitles them to 10 drink tickets, and two meal tickets. There will be live entertainment by well-known Glass House Mountains local Paul McKenna and his band along with the Easy Tigers, from Gladstone, who will be playing great cover versions of popular songs from 7.00pm to 1.00am. Anyone under 18 will be allowed in free of charge, however they will need to pay for food and drink and be accompanied and supervised by their parents. Very limited camping will also be available on the night (on a first come, first served basis).

Event organiser Grahame Staines said this is a really important fundraising event for the sports club, with all of the funds raised on the night going directly into managing the facilities, which in turn gives many young locals the opportunity to participate in their chosen sports. “It has been great to see the support we have received from other organisations and businesses and we have also ensured that, as much as possible, the expenses that we have spent on organising the event have been spent with local businesses,” he said. With a maximum of 400 tickets being sold, the odds are pretty good for a really great start to 2017. Club President Lyn Burgess said, “You don’t actually have to be present for the draw to take out the big prize, so you might want to consider buying a ticket for someone you know as a Christmas present.” You can purchase tickets from Imelda’s on Maple up until Christmas or by phoning Grahame Staines on 0419 944 336 or Lynda Burgess on 0409 266 507. All payments must be finalised by 5.00pm, Tuesday, December 27.

Peachester Grounds revived
Contributed by Sally Joyce
It has been a long time between innings for this Peachester Cricket Pitch. Cricket is not known to have been played on this pitch for possibly 50 years. The Peachester Community would like to take this opportunity to offer a big thanks to the Parks and Gardens team at Sunshine Coast Council who have recently added the Peachester Sports Ground to their turf maintenance contract. The grounds will now receive 16 mows per annum including brush cutting, rubbish removal and weed control along the fence lines. It previously received just 6 slashes a year. This means that the grounds have now been returned to a much more useable area for families and community members to use for recreational purposes. During the last six months our community has met with Councillor Rick Baberowski, held a community cricket day, conducted a community survey and held a community meeting to discuss the lack of recreational facilities in Peachester and liaised further with council. We couldn’t be happier with this initial result with special thanks to Nathan Walker-Edwards, from Sports Planning for helping to co-ordinate this step forward with Parks and Gardens. Special thanks also to community members who returned their surveys and had their say. If you haven’t seen it yet, after a few drops of rain, it is looking marv-ell-ous! It is open to be used and shared by our community. Since early settlement, people from ‘The Peach Trees’ (former name of Peachester) gathered
at the Stanley River for picnics and sports events including cricket, football, horse events, wood chops and on some sports days, footrunning races. In 1947 the present Reserve for Recreation was established. Two tennis courts and a dressing shed were built and a cricket pitch in 1948 and the sports ground developed as an area for recreation. Strong communities create strong children. We hope by having, in the very least, an open green space once again, that regular use of this facility can be encouraged. This can pave the way for further facilities and equipment to be included in Peachester in the future. The grounds are located on the Peachester Kilcoy Road, past the Stanley River Bridge on the left hand side as you head towards Kilcoy and before you get to the racetrack. If you do use the grounds for kicking the footy, flying a kite or a hit of family cricket – let us know and feel free to upload your pics to the Peachester Community Cricket Facebook page.

Sports Club still kicking! After an epic two year journey for the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club to ‘Save the Club’, they have finally been able to announce that the Club has indeed been saved and with more hard work they are continuing to move forward. Back in 2014 the Club was in serious debt of over $300,000 which included a bank loan of approximately $100,000, a bank overdraft of around $40,000, past employee expenses of about $50,000, other outstanding credit bills of $35,000, a pending insurance bill of $24,000, a water leak costing excess charges of $1000 per month, and it had a ‘demand’ rate electricity tariff costing $38,000 per annum. With such a dramatic challenge, many lesser clubs would have thrown in the towel and declared it too hard, but not the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club members, the committee and the local community who decided that the Club was worth fighting for and the ‘Save our Club’ fund was established. Club President Warren Raddatz said, “The response from our local community was amazing, with some very generous donations of $10,000 plus that really gave the fund a great kick along. “It has been heart-warming to know how many local families dug deep and gave what they could,” he said. “Pensioners whose children had played sports at the Club in their youth and young kids who donated their pocket money, local business and new residents to our community who could see

the importance of continuing to provide such great sporting facilities to locals – so many people were very generous.” Many people donated money directly to the fund as well as all sorts of in kind support over a 12 month period, raising the substantial amount of more than $144,000, plus an estimated $20,000 of other donated goods and services. These funds, combined with a range of other cost saving initiatives initiated by the Club committee, including going to war on electricity usage and electricity charges, fixing things themselves including water leak at ‘mate’s rates’ and successfully chasing a refund on the concealed leak, paid off. As a result of all of the blood, sweat and tears the Club’s current position is that they have paid all of debts, and are currently trading without relying on an overdraft. They are also meeting maintenance and services costs, and have resolved outstanding taxation issues. There are now no outstanding historic debts. The Club employs two permanent part-time and two casual staff members. Electricity costs have been reduced by $16,000 per annum and total operating costs by about $50,000 per annum. These days the Club is now making a small monthly profit and continuing to reduce costs and to maximise and improve the Club’s fundraising events. “While the Club has now reinforced their strong foundations, there is no guarantee that the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club and its

The Vintage Calendar Girls started off with 12 of founder Misty Bland’s gym friends. The following year, this expanded to 24 calendar girls and AFL legend Barry Hall lent his star power to the cause by featuring as a 1920s gangster on the cover. This year, Misty’s passion project has attracted more than 50 applications from Sunshine Coast women vying for a position in the calendar and she is working to build a powerhouse of women who have either fought their own health battle or who are crusaders in raising awareness for those who are going through struggles. Among those in the latter category is Network 10’s The Living Room renovating-for-profit guru Cherie Barber, who said she’d love to be involved in the calendar. Dubbed by the media as 'Australia's Renovation Queen', Cherie has appeared on countless Aussie television programs and her own American TV series called 5 Day Flip, but she admits she was excited by the opportunity to indulge in her passion for retro and embracing the ’50s theme for the 2018 calendar. Cherie owns a sassy pink and white 1956 Lambrecht Chevy Bel Air, the only one in Australia, and she also owns a 1956 retro caravan and adores anything vintage. As the only Australian female ambassador for asbestos awareness, Cherie is also passionate about keeping people informed of the dangers of renovating pre-1987 homes. Maleny mother-of-two Misty became a champion fundraiser for Rare Cancers Australia after her husband and childhood sweetheart, Rob,
was diagnosed with a thoracic chordoma – a cancer that attacks the spine – in early 2014. The diagnosis came after five years of emotional turmoil as doctors struggled to find out what had caused a mass to grow on the T10 of Rob's spine. Misty said the not-forprofit organisation, which advocates for the rights of Australians who are fighting rare cancers, had been a pillar of support for the family.
More than 50% of the cancers diagnosed in Australia are classed as rare cancers and are not afforded the same Medicare benefits as the more widely recognised cancers. Since the calendar’s inception, Misty has raised more than $10,000 for Rare Cancers Australia and is showing no signs of slowing down. There are only a small amount of the limited edition 2017 calendars, featuring Barry Hall, remaining. To buy a copy, donate, or offer services or equipment for the 2018 calendar project, visit the Vintage Calendar Girls on Facebook, email vintagecalendargirlsqld@gmail.com or call 0451 272 057.

Women’s Rugby League players tough it out Beerwah’s successful Women’s Rugby League team was fortunate to sign players this season who had no rugby league experience. Nat Browne came from soccer while Kim Gray had not played any form of football prior to signing up. Beerwah team captain and former Jillaroo, Samantha Beasant, said that the ladies were very eager to learn but were initially apprehensive regarding the level of contact. “Rugby league is a tough sport and our new girls seemed to love the challenge of learning new skills, getting used to the rough and tumble, all the while getting fit in the process,” Samantha said. Both the new players played on the wing throughout the season with Nat showing plenty of speed and evasion skills to score six tries in her first year of football. Kim became a very useful defender, preventing a try at a crucial point in Beerwah’s semi final win against Carina and she scored her first try in one of the last regular games of the season. Nat said that she never wanted the season to end as she absolutely loved her footy. “It may seem frustrating when players who have never played before turn up, but every single player never doubted me, never got angry and helped me wherever and whenever I needed it,” she said. “My first year of footy was one of the most enjoyable years of sport I have ever had.”

Police Beat with Constable Susan Lowndes Lock it or lose it
A number of the recent stealing offences in the division have been made possible by the fact that people are still not hearing the message to lock and secure houses and vehicles. If you are planning on going away over the school holidays, please make sure your house is secure. Don’t be the “soft target” – lock your windows and doors, put a couple of lights on timers if possible, let neighbours know that you will be away and ask them to collect mail and put bins in and out if necessary. Even if you are home it is still important to lock the house if you are out of view and hearing of the front door, or at night. It can be tempting to leave doors and windows open in the warm weather, but your home security should be considered. A fly screen door is unlikely to deter an offender as it can quietly and easily be removed to allow entry. When leaving your vehicle unattended in a public area or even in your driveway, don’t leave valuables behind. If it is unavoidable then make sure they are well hidden and there is nothing to suggest that they might be there. Don’t leave bags and backpacks in view as offenders may break into the vehicle on the off chance that there are cameras, phones/tablets, wallets or even just loose change inside. If you see something suspicious let police know by contacting Policelink on 131 444 or on www. policelink.qld.gov.au 24hrs a day. For urgent matters please call 000.

Beerwah Hotel Owner Rick Gazzard, with Hotel Staff Nathan Mahon and Cassie Ross and Ethan with his mum and dad "Without their support the day could not have happened. "I could not be more proud of what we accomplished on the day. The Gosdens are such a well deserving family and I am so thankful we could give them some of the support that they need." This worthwhile fundraiser drew on the fantastic generosity of local businesses and community groups as well as the numerous individuals who volunteered their time behind the scenes and on the day itself.
D0669
On Sunday, December 11, Beerwah Hotel presented the family of 14-month-old toddler Ethan Gosden with a cheque for $13,125.85 which brought the total amount raised from the hotel’s ‘Fight for Ethan’ fundraiser to over $16,000.00. Organised by staff and management at Beerwah Hotel, the fundraiser, which took place on November 6, was originally initiated through a staff family member connection with the Gosden family. Ethan is the youngest of five children and was born with a debilitating and extremely rare form of brain disease called Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia. In an incredible show of support, local businesses and community members jumped onboard to support the event which combined a car and bike ‘show and shine’ along with a family fun day. With all proceeds going directly to the family, over 1000 people came through the gates to support the event. Over 160 cars and 120 bikes registered for the ‘show and shine’, and the event was so successful that the road along the side of the pub was blocked off and the land next to the drive-through as well as the vacant land near the gym was needed for the day! As well as the car and bike show, the family fun day aspect, which included pony rides, jumping castle, amusements and more, pulled in a huge crowd. Additional funds were also raised with the drawing of over 26 donated raffles prizes and packs. “I am very thankful for all of the support the community have given us while we were organising this event," said event organiser Cassie Ross.

Landsborough show of strength The State Government’s plans for the Landsborough level crossing may have gone off the rails last Tuesday, with around 300 locals attending a public forum to discuss the proposal. Organised by local State Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle and supported by Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, the Landsborough Hall meeting confirmed that the community and local businesses have major misgivings with the latest concept design released by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). Mr McArdle arranged the meeting in response to the considerable level of contact and angst conveyed to him and his office over the previous months since TMR ran their consultation process. “Inconsistent messaging, coupled with a very short community consultation period has left many hinterland residents feeling fearful and overlooked,” Mr McArdle said. “These types of changes have considerable impact on a town such as Landsborough and the community has every right to have their views heard. “We want to work with the government to get a win-win solution but if the government does not come to the party and acts alone, the people of this community will quickly turn on it.” The crowd passionately yet politely spoke about their need to achieve the best outcome for Landsborough. Options were discussed, propositions put forward and consequences debated. Concerns expressed included the destruction of residential houses; the separation of the town into east and west (as happened at Beerwah);
the effective bypassing of Cribb Street CBD; and dropping property values. Mr Powell reminded people that the process is not finalised and that they shouldn’t be despondent. “Change is still very possible through community involvement. Local feedback changed the approach that was taken by the Department regarding the Bruce Highway rebuilding project between the Caloundra and Sippy Downs interchanges,” he said. “Public opinion can influence planning outcomes, but concerned locals must have their say to make their voice count.” Mr McArdle said his next course of action will be to set up another public meeting with the Department and other project managers in attendance in the New Year. “This proposal stage for the overpass is not yet over, therefore the community discussions are also not over,” Mr McArdle said. Anyone who couldn’t attend the meeting but would like to make their opinion known should contact Mr McArdle’s office on 5329 4100 or caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au

Church on the Rise is on the move Sometime early in the New Year, Church on the Rise will be relocating to 27 Beerwah Parade. They will leave their home on Peachester Road where they have been since 2000. The building which was formerly the RSL’s home in Beerwah will be the new home of Church on the Rise. Much has been happening behind the scenes to get the building ready for the church to move in. Recently Pastor Aaron Jackson met with local RSL personnel to return memorabilia that had been salvaged from the liquidated sale. Pastor Aaron said, “We are here, as always to be a blessing to our community. If our church cannot help you, then we will do what we can to put you in touch with someone who can. “Our prayer for you this Christmas: May the hope of Christ fill your heart, may your family be blessed and your travels safe,” he said.

Deb Ball supports Chaplaincy
Writers dig deep
The sun shone brightly for the Sunshine Coast Scleroderma Support Group's information stand at the Woodford Markets in November. This was apt, as the Sunflower has been adopted as the national symbol of the disease due to the fact that sufferers feel the cold and therefore search out the sun for warmth. The day was a huge success with great interest being shown in finding out more about Scleroderma.
Need a Feed representatives Dorothea Neden and Adrienne Heppell receive the cheque from Beerwah Writers Group member Paul Stevens
Group members Cheyenne MacLeod and Geoffrey Fritz
Contributed by Chris Bell Chaplaincy Committee Secretary At the Glasshouse Country Combined Chaplaincy Christmas Breakfast in December, Anglican representatives John and Pam Innes presented Beerwah High School Chaplain Mike Turner with a welcome cheque for $2,350.00 to support his work with students and families at the school. We have gratefully received support from the Anglican Debutante Ball over many years and appreciate the work involved. To all Chaplaincy supporters of Beerwah High School, Beerwah, Landsborough, Glass House and Beerburrum Primary Schools we say a huge thanks and we wish you blessings at Christmas.
For a number of years the Beerwah Writers Group has given an annual donation to an international charity supporting children. However, this year for the first time they decided to make their donation to assist local families in need and, at their last meeting for the year, they donated $200.00 to Need a Feed. Local Need a Feed Co-ordinator Adrienne Heppell gratefully received the funds which will contribute to the cost of Christmas Hampers and emergency funds required over the Christmas period. Adrienne thanked the group for their support, along with Adjust to Life Chiropractic and the Goodlife Childcare Centre at Glass House Mountains who acted as a collection point for hamper items.

Lions busy end of year
Contributed by Bob Banner Beerwah Lions Club had a busy end to the year with 350 kilograms of empty aluminium cans collected and sent off for re-cycling. Interestingly, drink cans are made from high grade aluminium and recycling them is a very efficient way of obtaining new aluminium. Save Sight Chairperson Gwen Kippen also reported a satisfactory amount of used spectacles had been collected and sent off to the Lions recycling centre at Redcliffe. After recycling, the spectacles are delivered to nations of limited resources where they improve the sight of many disadvantaged people. President Charles Farran presided over the club’s end of year / Christmas Party held recently at the Landsborough Hotel. During the evening a number of Lions received awards for long term membership. The Lions will now enjoy a few weeks of well deserved rest before the club resumes in February. The Lions also take this opportunity to wish everyone a truly Merry Christmas, and a prosperous and contented New Year.

Seasons Greetings from GC&MNews Putting together the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News each and every week - 48 weeks a year - is a massive job. It takes the combined efforts of a lot of people to make it happen. We’d like to take the opportunity to thank all of the people who make up the team that bring you GC&M News each week - from our writers, proof readers, advertising sales, design and admin teams, inserters and delivery team, to our domestic goddess who keeps the office clean and our mower man who keeps our lawn immaculate. Plus a big thanks to our great independent printers, Horton Media. It is because of their enthusiasm and dedication that it is a joy for us to bring this community newspaper to you - our wonderful readers. Thanks to all of you for being part of the GC&M News Team. And a big thank you to all our contributors, letter writers, columnists, advertisers, and supporters (and even our occasional detractors). We value your efforts more than you realise, for without you, these pages would not be as vibrant, touching and insightful. True independent community weekly newspapers are an endangered species. There aren’t too many of us left. They are the heart, the voice, the soul and the passion of a community. A strong community newspaper is only possible because of a strong community. We look forward to working with you all in 2017 to continue the proud tradition that is the Glasshouse Country & Maleny Newspaper. Best Wishes Lea and Brownie

Optometry with a difference ... you'll see With Christmas just a few days away; now is an important time of year for our thoughts to focus onto thinking about others and the gift of giving. A wonderful way to ‘give back’ at Christmas and indeed at any time of year is to help others that may be less fortunate.
For the past 20 years, Professor Leo Hartley from h2 Vision Centres at Sippy Downs has self funded visits to Vanuatu to join a group of dedicated volunteer medical professionals who ‘give back’ their expertise and services to Ni-Vanuatu locals. Working in conjunction with the Vanuatu Government – Leo and the team with the Vanuatu Prevention of Blindness project identify the areas of greatest need for their medical services and set off to help, often visiting extremely remote parts of the country. “Often our work will take us to super remote places! We fly into one of the islands, take a four hour trip in the back of a ute with all of our equipment and supplies – and then jump
A new
approach to optometry Book an appointment now and you’ll see.
into a tinny for another three hour leg of the journey. This is all just to get to the first village where we will set up the clinic. The villages are so remote and without medical infrastructure that sometimes we just set up the clinic under a mango tree and get on with the consults!” chuckles Leo. While Leo predominately utilises his extensive optometry skills to help maintain the gift of sight; as a qualified doctor, he along with the team of local health professionals and Australian medical volunteers are often called upon to address other health issues during their visits. Interestingly, Leo has found that the more remote the village, the more generally healthy people are – and the less prone they are to suffer more typically ‘westernised’ diseases such as diabetes and obesity.
However hypertension, which pushes up blood pressure to often disastrous levels, is a real health issue for the villagers. This spike in this condition is the result of a high salt diet (often used as a way to preserve food in the absence of refrigeration) and cooking in sea water. The team also come across a lot of ear, nose and throat (E.N.T.) conditions and a prevalence of tropical ulcers such as yaws which is transmitted via touch or by flies. Public health issues are also prevalent and Leo and the team are keen to promote effective public education programs as well as training programs to empower local health providers to service their community more effectively. Leo usually visits Vanuatu for two weeks, a few times a year and spends much of his time working with the local eye workers to assist villagers in need. As well as addressing more complex issues, Leo also helps fix more general vision problems.
Working remotely, Leo and the team often don’t have immediate access to the state of the art technology available here and are forced to rely on their own expertise and resourcefulness – with the results bringing a huge positive impact into the lives of others. “It is so rewarding that we can use our skills to genuinely change people’s lives. These people are so deserving – even though they are very materially poor or may have health issues, they don’t complain … they are lovely happy people. We are honoured to help them,” says Leo. When you come to h2 Vision Centres you experience so much more than just a typical optometrist service. This is the long held dream by two committed brothers Leo and Mark Hartley (the h2 in the company name) to provide a total exemplary experience in service, expertise and retail range delivered by a team of deeply passionate professionals. Drop in or call for an appointment. You’ll see....

Tis the Season to be Planting! What could be a better gift this Christmas, than the gift that keeps on giving – plants! Whether they be Fruit Trees, Bushfoods, Rainforest Trees, Koala Food Trees, Groundcovers, Vines, Grevilleas, Ferns and too many other native plants to mention! For value, you can’t beat plants as a gift because they just keep growing and become more valuable with time, increasing in their beauty and productivity as time goes by. Better still not only do we humans benefit, but we also provide habitat and food for wildlife from butterflies to birds, katydids to koalas and skinks to sugar gliders. When we gift a plant to a friend or to our garden we make a better world for all. We have a great range of new stock for summer including our Flannel Flowers, Lemon Scented Myrtles, Aniseed Myrtles, Honey Gem, Coconut Ice, Robyn Gordon Grevilleas, Smooth Davidson Plums, Herbert River Cherries, Honey Pot Banksia, White Flower Bower of Beauty, Dicksonia Tree Fern, Lillypillys, Waratahs, Native Rosemary, Bottle Brushes, Mint Bushes, Paper Daises and many, many more. Environment Protecting Australian bats from fatal fungus The Commonwealth Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is working with other organisations to boost biosecurity measures to prevent the entry of an exotic disease rapidly spreading in bats across North America. White Nose Syndrome (WNS) of bats was first identified in North America in 2006, and has since spread across the USA and Canada, causing the deaths of over five million cave-hibernating bats. The fungus that causes WNS has been found in Europe and China, where it affects individual bats, but does not cause mass mortalities. It’s thought the fungus was introduced to North America by human activity, possibly from contaminated gear or footwear. First Assistant Secretary Animal Division, Tim Chapman, said WNS was identified as an emerging disease threat through our usual scanning practices. “To better understand the risk to Australia, we commissioned a risk assessment by a group of experts,” Mr Chapman said. “This found that there is a risk to Australian bats, particularly one species that is Critically Endangered.” A US bat with White Nose Syndrome (Image credit: US Fish and Wildlife Service)

The Healthy Waterways and Catchments scorecard has been released and the Mooloolah River has done well. Our river is in “good health” and “highly used and valued”. Healthy Waterways and Catchments is a communityfocused and science-based waterway and natural asset management organisation whose aim is to improve the coordination and implementation of best practice catchment management. Our little Mooloolah River doesn’t stay so little as it heads out to the coast. Did you know the catchment area is 223 km2 while total stream network length is 322km? The main land use includes native bush, grazing, rural residential, managed forests and urban areas. Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare have a team of seven to eight volunteers which monitors, on a monthly roster, 21 sites spread along the reaches of Hell Hole Creek, Mooloolah River, South Mooloolah River and Sippy Creek. Collected data is entered into the uniDap WaterQ database which is then processed and accessed by other organisations like Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and Healthy Waterways. The Healthy Waterways scorecard provides an annual assessment of pressures facing our waterways, and measures social and economic benefit. While everyone should welcome the very good results for all catchments in the Sunshine Coast region, we need to continue to protect our unique and beautiful land and waterways. There are many environment and community groups working on projects to reduce sediment loads in our water ways. If you would like to be involved please contact Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare or your local landcare group. For details visit www.mooloolahwaterwatchandlandcare. org or call into the nursery on Steve Irwin Way. Just gotta love the bush!

Those “out of touch” scientists
Mr Muller's letter (GCM News, December 7) is full of challenges. Firstly, his definition of 'geomancy' is very strange. It bears absolutely no resemblance to what geomancy actually is. And retired scientists he says, are “out of touch” with current research – an extraordinary generalisation to make. It means Mr Muller must be keeping track of all the retired scientists around the planet. And he relies on NBN PR reports to make comments on NBN reliability. This is like asking the Roman Emperor how the Roman Empire is doing just seven days before the Visigoths or the Vandals attacked the city of Rome. "Oh, we're doing just fine thank you," says the Emperor. "I have all the border security reports in." Next he mentions property values. The real key issue is the drop in property values near to towers (not a rise). A recent US Real Estate Survey (July 2014) found 94% of respondents reported that nearby towers would impact interest in a property and the price they would pay. And 79% said under no circumstances would they ever purchase or rent a property within a few blocks of a phone tower or antenna. Articles such as this one – ‘The Impact of Cellular Phone Base Station Towers on Property Values’ by Sandy Bond, Si-Yeou Mun, et al. Univ. of Auckland, NZ, Jan. 2003 – and this – ‘Cell Antennas and Towers near Homes affect Property Values’, M.S. Fischler, NY Times, Aug. 2010 – show the picture.
Send your letter to email: editorial@gcnews.com.au fax: 5438 7446 post: PO Box, 99, Beerwah, 4519
A Canadian study in 2002 of over 500 house sales in Brossard city, Greater Montreal showed that the severe effect of a direct view of either a pylon/ tower or lines exerts a negative impact on property prices of between 5% up to 20%. A British real estate study showed up to 20-25% loss on property values due to nearby towers. And finally, Maleny real estate people told us that a tower could drop the nearby land values by up to 25%. So Hinterland owners are actually protecting their property values by refusing an NBN tower. Bring on the fibre cable. Richard Giles Conondale

Are you adequately covered if disaster strikes? Do you have enough insurance? If you suffered a total loss — if a fire came through and destroyed your sheds, fences, equipment, crops, livestock and your home — would you have enough coverage to start over? Many of us don’t carry enough insurance. We think ‘it won’t happen to me’. But what if it does happen? Here are our top tips to make sure you’ve got enough insurance coverage: Carry out a risk assessment Often you don’t know how much insurance you really need until it’s too late. The best precaution is to undertake a risk assessment of your property. Consider the replacement cost of items used in the farm business. Contact your insurance company to send in a representative. Could I cope? When deciding to insure a particular item, ask yourself whether you could run your business without it if it were damaged or lost. If not, could you afford to replace it without the assistance of an insurer?
Out in the paddock All too often fencing is insured for a low amount as a total loss seems unlikely, leaving farmers short in the event of a major incident. Don’t underestimate the value of your crops, hay and livestock. Insure your silos properly, too. Act quickly Don’t forget to add new vehicles, machinery and equipment to your policy straightaway. It’s not just big items like a new harvester or tractor, add the smaller items, like a new quad bike, too. Extend your liability Consider getting an extension to your Farm Legal Liability when either purchasing or leasing additional farming properties. Loss of income In the event a major disaster strikes and your farm is unworkable, Loss of Income insurance can help ensure you still have money coming in until you get things up and running again.
Build a relationship Your insurance company is there to help. You can change or update your policies at any time, so build a relationship with them whereby you can give them a quick call (or even send them a text with a photo of your new purchase) to make sure you’re covered. Don’t wait until it’s too late Many people only look closely at their insurance policies when they need to make a claim. It’s up to you to make sure you have all the coverage you need, so don’t wait until it’s too late! To review your insurance cover, contact your local WFI Area Manager, Rachel Wright on 0437 804 951 or visit wfi.com.au/RachelWright To see if our products are right for you, always consider the PDS from the product issuer, WFI (ABN 24 000 036 279 AFSL 241461). Rachel Wright (AR 362588) is an Authorised Representative of WFI.
Business feature
Meet Rachel. She’s a good person to know for insurance. Insure with WFI and you’ll deal directly with a local area manager who will take the time to understand you and your needs as a farmer. So, your insurance will always be handled with a personal touch. Plus, you have the option to tailor your own insurance package to suit your needs. WFI, good people to know for insurance since 1919. Things To Do Captain Fantastic at Maleny
Maleny Film Society’s first screening for 2017 (Saturday, January 14) is ‘Captain Fantastic’, starring the remarkable Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn in ‘Lord of the Rings’) as the bereft father of six children, who tackles the dramatic move from deep forest to cityscape with the attendant dilemmas. Duration: 119 minutes. Australian film classification MA 15+. Ben, having brought up his children in hand-built dwellings in the majestic forests of the north-west of USA close to Nature and trained them in human values, has to transplant them to an urban environment, with resulting confusions and tensions in environment and relationships. Six fine young actors create individual characters with credible emotion. Like a move from a big city to Maleny in reverse, the children strike conflicting attitudes, asking their hosts inappropriate questions: “How did you kill these chickens?” Members of the Film Society may pre-book via the Maleny Information Centre or online at www.malenyfilmsociety.info. New members may also join online. Doors open at 6.00pm for catered dinner with drinks bar and tea/coffee stand. The film screens at 7.15pm. This will also be the first day Festival passes will be available for sale to the general public for Maleny’s Australian Film Festival (January 27 – 29 with special guest commentator David Stratton).

Become a part of the world-wide treasure hunt
Geocaching is an any day, any time adventure that can take you to amazing and beautiful places, including a Sunshine Coast Council library. The real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game uses GPS coordinates for treasure hunters to navigate, using GPS devices such as a smartphone and an app, to find the geocache (container or treasure chest) hidden at that location. And our local libraries have joined the hunt. Director of Community Services Coralie Nichols said there were more than two million geocaches hidden around the world and thanks to a local geocaching expert, one of council’s library branches has its own cache and related clues. “We believe this is the first cache to be hidden inside a library in Queensland, although we are not completely certain, as the whole point of geocaching is to keep cache locations a secret,” she said. “Most caches are hidden in the great outdoors but the library cache is a rare indoors one. The GPS functionality of the cache search stops working once you move inside. “The first leg of the library geocaching journey brings geocachers only as far as the front garden of the library where a clue has been hidden. This clue then leads them inside the library to the next clue. “The clues eventually lead searchers to a ‘treasure chest’ which, without giving too much away, I’ll describe as a beautiful, handmade cache.” To start finding geocaches all you need is a smartphone and the free geocaching app which accesses the phone’s inbuilt GPS. The way it works is simple. You search for caches at your location (or anywhere else) and the app will map all the caches hidden nearby. Your phone will then lead you to the location of the cache. After you find the cache, sign the logbook, trade knick-knacks if you want, and log your find online. When you are done, just put the geocache back where you found it and you can move onto the next one. Become a part of the world-wide treasure hunt by visiting www.geocaching.com. www.gcnews.com.au

Cancer Council Queensland debunks eight myths about sun protection Knowing fact from fiction will help you reduce your cancer risk and protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Myth 1: Sun damage is not possible on windy, cloudy or cool days – false. You can get sun damage in any weather as this is caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, not temperature. Sun protection is required when the UV index is three or greater – in Queensland this is all year around. Check daily UV levels at cancer.org.au/SunSmartApp Myth 2: Plenty of sun exposure is required to avoid vitamin D deficiency – false. Queenslanders shouldn’t expose themselves to potentially harmful UV in order to get more vitamin D. Just a few minutes of sun exposure in the early morning or late afternoon is sufficient. Myth 3: You can stay outside for longer when you are wearing SPF50+ – false. No sunscreen is a suit of armour and sunscreen should never be used to extend the amount of time you spend in the sun. SPF50+ only offers marginally better protection than SPF30+, filtering 98% of UV compared to 96.7%, respectively. Myth 4: Sunscreen is not necessary when using cosmetics with any level of SPF – false. Unless cosmetics are labelled with an SPF30 of higher, you should wear additional sunscreen under your makeup. Which should be re-applied every two hours.
Myth 5: People with olive skin are not at risk of skin cancer – false. Regardless of skin type, exposure to UV radiation can cause permanent damaged. People with olive skin are actually more likely to detect their skin cancers at a later stage, emphasising the importance of protection, selfchecks, and early detection. Myth 6: Skin cancer is easy to treat so you don’t need to be too concerned – false. Skin cancer treatment can be much more serious that having a lesion burnt off. It can include surgery, chemotherapy, and can result in scarring. Skin cancer can also spread to other parts of your body. If you notice any changes, or new spots, consult a GP immediately. Myth 7: If you tan but don’t burn, you don’t need sun protection – false. There is no such thing as a safe tan. If skin darkens, it is a sign of skin cells in trauma, even if there is no redness or peeling. Skin darkens as a way of trying to protect itself because the UV rays are damaging cells. Myth 8: You can’t get burnt through a car window – false. Untinted glass does not completely block out radiation. If you spend long periods of time in the car, remember to wear sunscreen. Cancer Council recommends Queenslanders use all five methods of sun protection - Slip on protective clothing, Slop on SPF30 or above broad-spectrum, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on wrap-around sunnies.

Living - Arts Art group showing in Montville Seven members of the Landsborough Art Group have hung another lovely exhibition in the Montville Hall supper room. There are works in acrylic, oil, water colour and pastels of various themes and all are very reasonably priced. The exhibitors, who come from Glenview, Mooloolah, Beerburrum, Glass House and Beerwah, are Marguerite Colledge, Wendy Kirkwood, Jacky Gibson, Robert (Bob) Maas, Una Robinson, Anne McArthur and Pamela Givney.
Open Studio weekend The December/New Year’s Open Studio Trail will be held over two days from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday, December 31 and Sunday, January 1. What a great way to see out the old year and welcome in 2017! Come along and get inspired by the work of three of the Arts Connect Inc creative artists at their studios on the holiday weekend. Meet artists Jacky Lowry, Annie McIntosh and Chris Blake in their creative environments. These three artists produce work using a variety of mediums including pastels, inks, acrylics, oils and printmaking. The Open Studio Trail will run from Landsborough, through Peachester and on to Harper Creek near Conondale, and it’s the perfect occasion to meander along the beautiful Glass House Mountains Tourist Drive. Chris Blake lives and works in a studio purpose designed and built as a studio/gallery/home in 2000. Being an owner builder, it took a few years before the Blake Studio was opened to the public, but now visitors can come to the acre property via its circular driveway (access from the second entry) with ample parking for six cars or a couple of mini buses. The location of the studio is on a dead end street so there is plenty of safe on-street parking also available. Since moving to Queensland, Chris has been a productive artist winning many awards including the Maleny Art Award, the Hervey Bay Open, the PSA Winter Show Open and the Scape Sec twice. Chris has also had two years as a finalist at the Kenilworth Art Prize and numerous other awards over the years. An active tutor, Chris has facilitated art workshops from Darwin to the UK. Last year, Chris travelled around Queensland and interstate doing workshops in pastel and oils. The address of Blake Studio is 36 Graham Drive, Landsborough. To find out more and to download maps and directions for the Open Studio Trail, go to www.artsconnectinc.com.au Supporting artists and connecting communities All location details and information about the artists can be found at the Arts Connect website www.artsconnectinc.com.au

Transportable Shade Sheds have had a very exciting year with incredible support from their team, their resellers and the online business support platform Saver6.com. Throughout the year, the Sunshine Coast based business has successfully achieved a number of significant goals – increasing both their reseller base and product line to offer customers innovatively designed and manufactured products that are built to last in our tough Australian conditions. With a host of resellers around the country jumping onboard to sell and install their products, the innovative manufacturing team at Transportable Shade Sheds have been busy expanding their range to provide the most comprehensive shade and covering options in the country. It’s time to celebrate, and as a great way to introduce new ranges to the market – the team are offering huge discounts on selected new products with never before seen prices. As the company expands into more shade related products some products have up to almost 60% off the recommended retail prices.

Huge discounts on new products “We are really excited to bring out new products into the marketplace. With our growing network of resellers, it makes perfect sense to continue expanding and providing additional items to our customers,” says Business Manager, Tyler Maclaren. With the introduction of exciting new and adaptable products, the product resellers are able to generate even more revenue which provides excellent outcomes all round – for the customer, who has access to a greater range; for the reseller, who can provide a quality product to suit most shade requirements; and for Transportable Shade Sheds, who can enjoy manufacturing and supplying reliable products that appeal strongly to an Australian market. “We have had problems in the past with people knocking off our designs and we end up competing with our own product. Now, with the company group and product distribution growing, we can safely inject a new product on the market and with the amount of people selling our genuine product, the knock offs won’t stand a chance,” says Tyler. With a great year almost wrapped up, plans are now charging forward for what is already shaping up to be a strong start to 2017. “The best part is our resellers are doing well and we are proud to be helping hundreds of people throughout Australia.”

The ladies who attended – Maryanne, Di (who did all the organisation, and a famous job!), Linda, Cheryl, Rhyllis, Joan, Glenys, Sue, Deb, Joy, Meg, Julie, Ann and myself – were all in wonderful festive spirits, and the food at Pasta d'Vine was amazing! Thank you, Sue. We have a great time at all our classes, held each Tuesday at 10.30am in Landsborough and Wednesdays at Maleny, also 10.30am. We would welcome you there sometime soon. Carols by candlelight Approximately 600 people gathered under the stars on Glasshouse Christian College’s oval for the Prep to Year 2 Carols by Candlelight concert on Monday and then again on Tuesday night for the Upper Primary Concert. The weather
was perfect and the atmosphere was festive. The concert items were a combination of old favourites and new hits, but the best part was the enjoyment seen on the students’ faces. They had a fantastic time and a great night was had by all.
Isabella Bullock, Lily Maguire and Keela O’Keeffe are in the festive mood

It's a fact ... Reindeer names - Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On Comet! On, Cupid! on Donner and Blixen. Originally it was on Dunder and Blixem in the 1823 publication of "A Visit from Saint Nicholas". Dunder and Blixem was Dutch for Thunder and Lightning. Blixem was changed to Blixen, and Dunder to Donder in 1837 by Charles Hoffman. When Clement Moore included the "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" in his 1844 book, he'd changed Blixen to the German word for Lightning, "Blitzen". Then in Johnny Mark’s song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", Donder changed to Donner, German for Thunder.

Contributed by Michelle Lenz In the last week of school Mooloolah State School held its annual Christmas Concert in the school hall. It was a fantastic night of music, fun, food, entertainment and class performances. The evening began with entertainment from the school’s Spanish dancing team, followed by singing and guitar from an ex student, then the school band played, before the main stage entertainment began with classes getting up one by one and performing for family members and loved ones. They showed their true Christmas spirit with their costumes and singing voices as they sung Christmas carols and songs for the audience. Mooloolah Valley Lions Club generously donated their time and efforts cooking on the barbecue for the school and community. We would like to thank the Lions for all their support to our school. The night wrapped up with some raffles drawn and then students and families making their way outside for the Fireworks Spectacular from KC Fireworks as the grand finale to a wonderful evening. Mooloolah State School community would like to thank all families and students for a wonderful year and look forward to seeing both new and existing families in 2017. We would also like to thank all the businesses and volunteers that have helped our school this year, without all of you we could not be the wonderful school we are.

It's a fact ... Christmas cards - began with school children drawing pictures of biblical scenes and a message like Happy Holidays and I promise to be good, etc, and giving them to their parents before Christmas. In 1846, after the advent of the British postal system, the first Christmas Card was produced, showing a family celebrating a Christmas dinner in the centre and on each side were acts of charity picturing feeding and clothing the poor, with the message "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You".

Dogs’ rules for Christmas
1. Be especially patient with your humans during this time. They may appear to be more stressed out than usual and they will appreciate long comforting dog leans. 2. They may come home with large bags of things they call gifts. Do not assume that all the gifts are yours. 3. Be tolerant if your humans put decorations on you. They seem to get some special kind of pleasure out of seeing how you look with fake antlers. 4. They may bring a large tree into the house and set it up in a prominent place and cover it with lights and decorations. Bizarre as this may seem to you, it is an important ritual for your humans, so there are some things you need to know: • Don't pee on the tree • Don't drink water in the container that holds the tree • Mind your tail when you are near the tree • If there are packages under the tree, even ones that smell interesting or that have your name on them, don't rip them open • Don't chew on the cord that runs from the funny-looking hole in the wall to the tree 5. Your humans may occasionally invite lots of strangers to come visit during this season. These parties can be lots of fun, but they also call for some discretion on your part: • Not all strangers appreciate kisses and leans • Don't eat off the buffet table • Beg for goodies subtly • Be pleasant, even if unknowing strangers sit on your sofa • Don't drink out of glasses that are left within your reach 6. Likewise, your humans may take you visiting. Here your manners will also be important: • Observe all the rules in #4 for trees that may be in other people's houses. (4a is particularly important) • Respect the territory of other animals that may live in the house • Tolerate children • Turn on your charm big time 7. A big man with a white beard and a very loud laugh may emerge from your fireplace in the middle of the night. DON'T BITE HIM!! Contributed by Rufus of Mount Mellum

Christmas messages from Glasshouse Mike Turner Beerwah State High School Chaplain I’m 37 years old – I am now able to reflect on my school years, my twenties, getting married, having kids and now having kids in high school. Something I’ve learned from looking back; is how precious life is and how vulnerable I am without God there to love and guide me through the ups and downs. My encouragement to you is: use Christmas as an opportunity to reflect on your life. Think about your relationship with God. Think about your relationships with your family and friends. I also encourage you to pray. Have a blessed Christmas. Pastor Kathy Eddie Glasshouse Community Church Several years ago I got a phone call saying that Easterfest had been flooded out. I invited the group to come and stay. Then the phone rang and rang. In the space of an hour, I had 42 people staying at my house. I joked that I had a new appreciation for the innkeeper the night that Jesus was born. I have pondered on the innkeeper since that night. It wasn’t that the innkeeper was unkind but he had too many people in his house already. The only place he could offer was a stable. Sometimes my life gets too busy. I can end up very busy with not enough time for God. My life, just like the inn is overfull. I try to squash God into the stable. This Christmas, decide that you will let him come in and spend quality time with Him. Fr Harry Reuss - Parish Priest Maleny Anglican Parish Imagine the excitement if you had the opportunity to travel the road to Bethlehem and visit the place of Jesus’ birth. It would be a deeply moving experience. Every year at Christmas all of us can take the road to Bethlehem. In worship, song, devotion and meditation, we can all visit the place where our Saviour was born. Indeed, we must make the road to Christmas the road to Bethlehem if we are to keep Christmas as Christians. What is Christmas for you — holiday or holy day? How essential to your Christmas joy is the Christmas story? Christmas is meant to be a joyous time. But it means joy about the Saviour — not joy without the Saviour. At the centre of our celebration is the shining fact that the Babe of Bethlehem is born. This is the good tiding that came from eternity into our time, giving to our joy the quality of permanence. The fact that we give one another gifts at Christmas is not the reason why we rejoice on this festive season. The true reason for rejoicing is the birth of Jesus. He is God’s great gift to us. Without Christ, the deeper meanings of Christmas are gone. This is the central fact of Christmas, that God has entered into our world that we might find new life in God! This belief in the holy birth makes Christmas a song of joy, a glowing radiance, a spirit of kindness in a rough and ruthless world. It is truly a ‘Merry Christmas’ only to those who know the meaning of the manger — only to those to whom the holiday is a Holy Day. 36

Christmas can be one of the most stressful times of the year as we try to play happy families. We celebrate the coming of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, and yet peace seems far from the reality of our lives. Where is the peace? Peace is found IN Christ Jesus. This means turning to Jesus, learning his ways, receiving his peace and sharing this peace with others. Be encouraged to find yourself in church this Christmas and seek the Prince of Peace. Peace be with you.

Rev Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church On behalf of the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas. At this time of year it is so easy for the presents, parties, families and the occasional argument to distract us from the most significant event in human history – the time we remember when God visited us. That is why Jesus was called Emmanuel which means, 'God with us'. You can’t get a more meaningful event than that! Have a great Christmas.

Have you stood in the middle of the shopping aisle at the supermarket and wondered why all the fuss? Why do I bother? Are you wishing for some peace and quiet? Do you feel that while you want to take it slower things just seem to get faster? Well! I think that you are not alone... but take a deep breath and remember why we do this at Christmas.... Take a moment to share with a child the real meaning of Christmas.... We all participate in the gift buying, even those who say they don’t like Christmas; we participate in the office get-togethers – the secret Santa’s... the pageantry of the season... If you don’t believe in the real meaning and don’t want to share it; then don’t do any of it... but if you, like many, love your family, love the joy the sharing brings to others, then sharing the real meaning of this season will only bring even more joy, for as we share with our families that special sharing of that celebrated family of long ago, we create memories that will last for always, a precious sharing of love and joy, peace and, yes, faith... begun with love; continued in love. May you all enjoy a blessed Christmas this year.

The members and friends of Calvary Lutheran Church Glasshouse greet you this CHRIST-mas as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. “Behold, I bring you glad tidings of great joy. To you is born this day a Saviour, who is Christ the King.” It is difficult sometimes to find peace and joy in a world filled with restlessness and despair. The One who brings hope to our world is Jesus Himself. Born in Nazareth of Galilee, His love is eternal and therefore each of us at this time can totally depend on the King who was born for us. Pastor Aaron Jackson Church on the Rise Beerwah Christmas is a time of reflection, where we look back over the year and be thankful we made it through the challenges and had some wins along the way. More important than focusing solely on us and those closest to us, it is recognizing God coming close to us. God sent His Son so that we could know God. There is freedom that comes, as we invite Him into our lives. It doesn't mean life will be smooth sailing but it does help when He is there to navigate our way. It takes faith and it takes trust. Have a blessed, safe and prosperous Christmas and New Year.
Reverend Scott Kroege Maleny Presbyterian Church Why a virgin birth of the Christ? This is one of the harder things for modern day people to accept. But the Bible teaches that the virgin birth was a miracle. This miracle is found in various places in Scripture and when you think about it, it was only one more miracle from a great and powerful God. In fact, the Christian Church has consistently taught, uniformly, the virgin birth throughout history. It explains HOW Jesus became both God and man. It answers how God can send a Saviour… and not be tainted with the sin of Adam like we are. Happy Nativity Day!!

Loving God, Loving People, Loving Life
Father Kevin Smith Catholic Church Christmas is a time for making connections or reconnecting with those with whom we may have lost touch. We go to a lot of trouble to spend time with family members, loved ones and friends. There is a small miracle occurring within all these gatherings and reconnecting. In the putting aside of differences and showing our appreciation of others we are a living reflection of what we celebrate during Christmas. In Jesus, born among us, God is now connected to the human family in a way that can never be undone. In love shared, Christmas is born. A blessed Christmas. DECEMBER 20 2016 |

In the Garden
Gardening jokes
with Brownie
Holiday-proof your garden
This time of year, many of us go away for a well-earned break, and the last thing we want to be thinking about is possible problems in the backyard. It’s no fun sipping a cheeky little chardonnay in a boutique winery at the Hunter Valley and remembering that you’ve forgotten to drop the budgie off at Aunty Doris’s place. Here’s just a sample of things that you need to remember to do before you head off. If you haven’t booked the pet into a ‘pet motel’, you’re probably too late. Try a friendly neighbour or relative to look after Fido/Fluffy/Tweetie. In the garden … if you’re away for only a week, a soil wetter will make sure that your pot plants are really well drenched. You can even spray the plant with an anti-transpiration product that cuts down on water loss from the leaves. It won’t hurt the plant, it’s safe for animals, and the plant won’t die from lack of water. If it’s longer than a week, you might think about putting in some temporary drip irrigators and a tap timer. Or a good tip is to buy one of those cheap kiddies’ pools, set it up in the shade, put a few inches of water in the bottom, and leave your pots in that. The same thing can be done for indoor pots using the bath tub. If your prize garden or lawn needs regular watering, invest in a good quality tap timer – you can get some good battery operated ones these days – and set up some sprinklers. Or just pay the kid next door to do the watering. While he/she is at it, pay them to mow the lawn as well. Kids always look for extra pocket money over the holidays. Pack up or secure everything that could blow about in a storm. Being stormsmart is definitely the way to go this summer. Don’t use social networking sites to announce to the world that you’re on your dream holiday. That’s just telling the bad guys that you won’t be home. Make sure that you’ve locked the garden shed. Thieves target garden sheds and garages because they know that expensive gadgets are stored there. Don’t forget to cancel the paper delivery and ask someone to empty your letterbox. Get a pool-guy to do your pool maintenance while you’re away. The small cost is better than having to deal with a green pool the first day home.

DECEMBER 20 2016
Here’s a selection of my “favourite” gardening jokes and sayings for you to amuse your friends and rellies with over Christmas. If they don’t laugh … you need to work on your delivery. What vegetables do plumbers fix? Leeks. Why do potatoes make good detectives? Because they keep their eyes peeled. A farmer purchased an old, run-down, abandoned farm with plans to turn it into a thriving enterprise. The fields were grown over with weeds, the farmhouse was falling apart, and the fences were broken down. During his first day of work, the town priest stops by to bless the man's work, saying, "May you and God work together to make this the farm of your dreams!" A few months later, the priest stops by again to call on the farmer. Lo and behold, it's a completely different place. The farm house is completely rebuilt and in excellent condition, there is plenty of cattle and other livestock happily munching on feed in well-fenced pens, and the fields are filled with crops planted in neat rows. "Amazing!" the preacher says. "Look what God and you have accomplished together!" "Yes, reverend," says the farmer, "but remember what the farm was like when God was working it alone!" God made rainy days, so gardeners could get the housework done. I once read about the dangers of gardening, so I quit reading. A woman's garden is growing beautifully but the darn tomatoes won't ripen. There's a limit to the number of uses for green tomatoes and she's getting tired of it. So she goes to her neighbour and says, "Your tomatoes are ripe, mine are green. What can I do about it?'' Her neighbour replies, "Well, it may sound absurd but here's what to do. Tonight there's no moon. After dark go out into your garden and take all your clothes off. Tomatoes can see in the dark and they'll be embarrassed and blush. In the morning they'll all be red, you'll see. She does it, and the next day her neighbour asks how it worked. "So-so,'' she answers, "The tomatoes are still green but the cucumbers are all four inches longer.'' A man walks into a flower shop "I'd like some flowers please." "Certainly, sir – what did you have in mind?" He shrugs, "Well I'm not sure, I uh, I uh, I uh..." "Perhaps I could help,” says the shop assistant. “What exactly have you done?" Merry Christmas to all my readers – I hope you both have a wonderful break. See you next year.
Plant of the Month
This interesting and rather lovely flowering plant was named in honour of the German patron of botany, Baron von Hake. Previously known as Hakea gibbosa it is a plant of wallum woodlands but is quite happy growing in a variety of soil types. Hakea actites is a small to medium shrub with grey green prickly leaves and can be found from northern New South Wales to southern Queensland. The more southern New South Wales species retains the former name of H. gibbosa. Flowers are cream and rather small but usually quite prolific. The interesting tough and woody seed capsules follow the flowers within twelve months. Though quite large they only contain two seeds which require heat to release them. In nature this is usually fire but a warm oven or strong sunlight can cause the capsules to open. In the home garden and in a sunny position, Hakea can be pruned to a lovely compact and dense shrub. Glass House Mountains is home to another Hakea species H. florulenta which is not prickly and has elliptical grey green leaves. Both species grow 1 to 3 metres.

Sport Glasshouse Bowls Club
Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, December 14: Christmas Luncheon. After morning tea a fun game of pairs was enjoyed by eight teams with prizes for touches and also a mystery prize. Members then moved into the club for a nice cold drink and a well deserved lunch. There were many raffle prizes which were won as well as secret Santa. A very enjoyable day was had by all. Thursday, December 15: our last day of bowls for 2016 and we finished with a bang with a full green of bowlers. For something different we played 4 games of 6 ends. Winners of the day were Jack Timm and John McSwain with 3 wins + 30. Runner Up with 3 wins + 29 were Jenny Morris and Ross Siegle. Lucky draw went to Jimmy Tatum and Ron Rix. The green will be closed over Christmas from Sunday, December 18 through to Friday, January 20. These dates may slightly vary. There will be no bowls on Thursday, January 26 which is Australia Day and a public holiday. The first Thursday afternoon of bowls for 2017 will be starting the following week on February 2. Our club men and mixed competition calendar and also the yearly calendar will be out this week. If you don’t have an email I suggest you grab one from our office. They will also be put up on the Club Glass House website in the near future. Thanks to everyone that has helped out around our club this year. There are too many to mention. We are always after more help in our office if you can spare a few hours a week, especially on a Thursday. Can I just make one special mention to Dennis Hume who has been one constant figure in our office over the past seven years. He has done an amazing job in his role as secretary and it would be hard for the club to run without him. On behalf of our club can I thank all our sponsors for 2016 - Glasshouse Country Pest Control, Brett the Painter, Hansons, Glasshouse Auto Body Repairs, KLM Gas, Glasshouse and Beerwah Motel, Glasshouse Country Meats, Follow Me Hair Fashions, 7 Secrets Pizza, Glasshouse Property Sales, Glasshouse Views Retirement Village, Monty’s Glass and Security, Waterworths Nursery and Glasshouse Greenhouse. It is most appreciated. Our first column in next year’s paper will be either January 25 or February 1. Please remember bowls membership is now due for 2017. You can pay your $85.00 membership fee over the bar at Club Glass House. Please do so ASAP. I hope everyone has a great Christmas break and a happy and safe beginning to the New Year. See you all in 2017.
The Range Croquet Club
Contributed by Neil Lovett On Saturday several players took to the lawns for coaching before the monthly meeting of the club. Frances Harper and Neil Lovett took advantage of the cooler weather on Sunday and played a singles game, for Neil his first since February. With superior skill and strategy, Frances won 13 - 5. For enquiries about playing on our lawns at the Maleny Showgrounds, joining the club or coaching ring Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.
Pentathlon a huge success
Contributed by Tina Grieve On Sunday, November 27, around 150 kids from 19 different clubs competed at Skippy Park for the Glasshouse Districts Little Athletics annual Pentathlon competition. From all accounts it was a hugely successful day, with kids competing for accumulated scores across five different events through the day and Gold, Silver and Bronze medals awarded in every age group. Glasshouse Districts Little Athletics would like to send a huge thank you to the committee who made this day possible, as well as all of the many parent helpers and community sponsors. Extra special thanks go to: Landsborough Pool Supplies, Aussie World, Coffee Club Beerwah, Mrs Brown’s Cafe, Healthy Guru, Feed & Fodder, Landsborough Barber, Hair by Emma, Beauty by Leila, Thrill Hill, Maleny Dairies, Colour Queens Hair, Beerwah Newsagents, Australia Zoo, Woolworths Beerwah, Banjo’s Bakehouse and Anthy’s Coffee and Bagel Bar.

Maleny Bowls Club
Contributed by Ian Hansen Tuesday afternoon there were only six players, so a game of 16 end Triples was played. The winners by a single shot were Jane Burgess, Don Ginns and Warwick Moody over Joe Walters, Scott Alexander and David Burgess. The Jackpot wasn’t won. On Wednesday, four Members travelled to Kilcoy to contest their Monthly Fours. Maleny looked a big chance to win the First Round until the very last bowl. The Maleny team had won 8 of the 12 ends played and held shot on the last end. However, Kilcoy local Lester Bechley took out Maleny’s shot bowls to give Kilcoy 6 shots and victory by a single shot. Both sides finished on 16 points but without Lester’s final bowl they would have had 24 points. Maleny won the second game by a single shot but had no chance of winning. Wednesday evening saw quite a reasonable number turn up for the last fixture of 2016 and the winning teams were: Mobile Kingdom, Handles, Cookies, Ben Bryce and Mavericks. The Touchers went to Ray Ellemor, Steve Ellet and David Coffey, but no other results were recorded. Since this is the final issue of GC&M News for 2016, I should like to wish all our members and sponsors all the very best for Christmas and New Year. Also a big thank you to our sponsors for their much appreciated, generous sponsorship in 2016.

Symbols of Christmas Three men die on Christmas Eve and go to heaven, where they’re met by Saint Peter. “In order to get in,” he tells them, “you must each produce something representative of the holidays.” The first man digs into his pockets and pulls out a match and lights it. “This represents a candle of hope.” Impressed, Peter lets him in. The second man pulls out a tangle of keys and shakes them. “These are bells.” He’s allowed in too.
“So,” Peter says to the third man, “what do you have?” The third man proudly shows him a pair of red panties. “What do these have to do with Christmas?” asks Peter. “They’re Carol’s.” Contributed by Mr Claus Glass House Mountains

Week beginning 20/12/2016 SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 22 December A wonderful week to have the lights of your Christmas Tree shining brightly. Make some wishes at Christmas as the energy of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus, are perfect on Christmas Day. That also is a lovely week to extend gestures of caring and kindness to your family members. There's enough good will and good moods to forward all your projects. CAPRICORN 23 December - 19 January Being the traditional person that you are you love Christmas day. With Venus, positive with Cupid’s arrows to Jupiter, Uranus and Saturn, you could not ask for a better time for restoration of good will with kind hearted people gathered around the holiday festivities. Relationships are the best gift ever, and long term security is important. AQUARIUS 20 January - 19 February With Mars in Aquarius until the 19th, when it moves into Pisces, restlessness abounds, but provides the impetus to break new ground. There is an emphasis on business interests which can exploited rewardingly. With Venus in Aquarius you may even want to dance on Christmas Day with a new acquaintance who becomes a great friend! PISCES 20 February - 20 March This week sees Mars in your own private sign from the 19th. With Venus in Aquarius it does want you over Christmas to consider various Christmases past. Others may again look to you as the caretaker. Schedule breakfast with your friend and you will start the day in a good mood. The Scorpio Moon over the weekend brings happy, emotional signals!
ARIES 21 March - 20 April What an interesting Christmas week you will have when nice conservative Saturn, who represents ‘Father Christmas’, makes a wonderful aspect to Uranus in your sign. It might require you coming to terms with very unusual circumstances. In fact, you may devise out-of-the-box solutions to long standing problems. Expect celebrations. TAURUS 21 April - 22 May Around Christmas time lovely celestial stars make family and career development feel good enough to enjoy. It’s a period of making monetary changes easier to accept. Venus plays cupid with Jupiter, Uranus and Saturn to haul in your gifts this year. You should find yourself secure with your feelings, perhaps with that special someone, plus family. GEMINI 23 May - 21 June When the planet Mars enters Pisces on the 19th and Mercury goes retrograde, you are still in tune with the psychic and ethereal energies with the holiday spirit. You are not yet ready to give up and throw your hands in the air, so break out of your cocoon and solitudinal energy. Christmas can set off an inspirational and enlightening revelation. CANCER 22 June - 22 July Your only problem this Christmas month, is to make sure you get enough periods of rest and renewal, alongside the busier moments of getting all your presents together. As Mars enters Pisces, and Mercury goes retrograde from the 19th, you draw on sympathetic energy to explore a broader life, far afield. If shopping, watch for flawed items.
LEO 23 July - 22 August The atmosphere of the week prior to Christmas will be filled with upbeat attitudes and happy personalities. You will muse on what the financial year ahead means to you. However, don’t get lost in escapist themes, that take you away from the very real potential-filled life and opportunities in front of you. Much contemplation until January 9. VIRGO 23 August - 22 September From Wednesday the sun enters Capricorn for a month and this opens the way for more affectionate relations with all loved ones. Look for pleasure from creativity, recreation and personal hobbies. Your thinking at Christmas will be profound and insightful. You feel ready to take a chance with money and your thinking will right on the button! LIBRA 23 September - 22 October With Venus being your ruling planet, and that entering the sign of Aquarius during this festive holiday period, it makes you joyful and ready to have fun. You have your best charms and skills on display attracting popular support and attention. The Universe gifts you with lovely Christmas presents and then you walk into a positive New Year. SCORPIO 23 October - 22 November Enjoy the holiday season merrily with friends and loved ones, if possible, in your own home, doing your seasonal entertaining. Enjoy decking the halls with decorations for the holidays. Venus has a wonderful Christmas Day for you, full of harmonious relationships and loving family gatherings. With Mercury retrograde, double check your timetable!
