here is a fabulous local community organisation called ‘Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy’ - I guess you’re thinking if it’s got Brisbane in the title how local can it be? Well while Brisbane is in the title, the group is made up of 400 volunteers that knit and crochet for people in need throughout the state – and the most amazing thing is the group was started by a Glass House Mountains local Karen Croke and a couple of her friends. The group has been established since 2006 and is still going strong. However as is the challenge with all community organisations, they are always looking for additional funds.

Ewen Maddock Fish Stockers Challenge fishing competition and family fun day being held at Ewen Maddock Dam from 9.00am. It’ll be a great day of fishing, prizes, demonstrations, fishing, talks, giveaways and fishing. All funds raised go directly back into restocking programs for Ewen Maddock and Baroon Pocket Dams, which means that they can keep functioning as productive recreational fisheries into the future.

Peachester Village markets will be held at the Peachester Hall at Peachester, from 12.00noon – 5.00pm and are hosted by the Peachester CWA, plenty of plants, clothing, bric-a-brac, soft toys, homemade cakes and jams.

Savannah Sunset Dance Party, an evening of eclectic, soulful, rich and dark vibrant rhythmical dance music from Africa will be held at Eudlo Hall. Tickets are $26.00 for vegetarians and $30.00 for carnivores, and must be pre-booked with doors open from 6.30pm. Black spots get a make-over By Greg Brown

An $80.7 million pledge from the Federal Government for an upgrade to the Bruce Highway was announced in Parliament last week. The capacity of the Bruce Highway to handle the ever increasing traffic flow north and south, has long been a topic of local consternation. Over the years, many have made pleas to a succession of State and Federal governments to upgrade the highway and continue triplelaning each side of the highway right up to the Sunshine Coast, as well as to improve the safety of intersections and feeder roads. Disappointingly, most of these requests received have never been successful. However, a glimmer of light has arisen over Wild Horse Mountain, with Local Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper again raising the issue last week in Federal parliament, but this time receiving some welcoming news. Mr Slipper asked the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Mr Anthony Albanese to report to the house on what the Government is doing do upgrade the Bruce highway, prompting the Minister to commit to an $80.7 million pledge. In response to Mr Slipper’s question, Mr Albanese said the government has agreed to provide the funding to replace the existing Roys Road and Bells Creek Road intersections with a new interchange, the first stage in the targeted upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Caboolture and Caloundra.

The Roys Road intersection to be upgraded “The project which will extend Roys Road to the new interchange which will include a bridge across the Highway, and on and off ramps will get underway by the middle of this year. “Ten people have lost their lives on this twokilometre stretch of the Bruce Highway since 2002—I have had representations from the member for Fisher, as well as other community members, about this—and this is why it is important for this funding to proceed,” said Mr Albanese. No schematics were given which would explain how Roys Road would be re-routed north to the new intersection. And no explanation was made as to how this would impact upon the access for residents living down Bells Creek Road and Roys Road east of the highway.

Sad loss to our community The doors of the Big Mower at Beerwah remained closed last Thursday as a mark of respect for long time employee Mark ‘Jacko’ Jackson aged 49. Mark had been missing since January 22 and sadly on Wednesday afternoon the police located his body in his vehicle at Kenilworth State Forest. The police have not treated the death as suspicious. Mark was from Maroochydore, but has worked at the Big Mower for 31 years, so was known by many in our local community.

Thought of trying roller derby? The members of Coastal Assassins Roller Derby (CARD) will be coming together again for their annual Homegirls Hoe Down on February 23 and are keen to get some local spectators to come along on the day to South Pine Sports Club. The Hoe Down is a mix of fun and laughs, raffles, action and great sportsmanship and will give spectators a chance to check out the A grade players, such as HMAS Destroyher, Bandsaw Betty and Dollslayer, along with a great bout between B grade players. And while Roller Derby is definitely female territory, there will also be a Merby bout – Merby is derby for men which local Donna Cahill of Mooloolah (aka Piece Keepa) said is well worth a look. The Homegirls Hoe Down is a collaboration between four different leagues (CARD, Brisbane City Rollers BCR, Towoomba City Rollers TCR and Northern Brisbane Rollers NBR) giving profits to the Dee Dee Dainja Fund. Local Roller Derby chick Donna Cahill said Dee Dee Dainja is one of the founding members of the local league CARD and suffered a severe stroke at 28. She recently underwent brain surgery and came out fighting. “Dee Dee can no longer skate yet continues to support and give her time to the roller derby community. “Her ongoing treatment is expensive and the Hoe Down is one way for the derby community to give back to this amazing woman,” said Donna. The Sunshine Coast group started in December 2010 on the Sunshine Coast and now just a couple of years later they have 90 members.

And knowing how tough some of the Glasshouse Country Chicks are, you won’t be surprised to know that we have a number of locals that compete in Roller Derby. If you’ve seen it on television and thought it looked amazing, then why not head along on the day to see what all the fuss is about - after all roller derby is the fastest growing sport on earth. If you think the sport is for you, then you will want to find out all about the Coastal Assassins Roller Derby leagues ‘fresh meat’ intake that happens four times a year. The fresh meat training is a six week program to get you off your butt and rolling the track! No prior skating experience is necessary – as they also take on ‘raw’ meat. As far as training goes, there are two sessions per week – Freshies may skate on Thursday between 6.00pm - 8.00pm and there is a dedicated (compulsory) session for Freshies on Sunday afternoons 12.45pm - 2.45pm. A week of highs and lows Street artist needed The Australia Zoo family have had a week of highs and lows with the birth of a baby rhino for first time parents Inyeti and DJ and the sad loss of Siam a gorgeous Asian Elephant that has lived at the zoo for the past 10 years.

Community worker and artist Cathy Condon is on the lookout for a local street artist that would be able to help transform the Beerwah & District Youth & Community Centre (BADYACC) building into a vibrant work of art for the youth of Beerwah – embracing the culture, values and dreams of youth in the community.

On Thursday, February 7 a second rhino calf for Australia Zoo - a beautiful baby girl arrived earlier than expected. According to Australia Zoo keeper, Renee Schier, mum and bub are making great progress. “We’re very excited to announce that Inyeti, our southern white rhinoceros, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The calf is healthy, strong and weighs between 45 – 50kgs,” said Renee. Despite arriving a little earlier than anticipated, the rhino is showing all of the normal signs for a healthy calf. “We’re really happy with her progress. She is already feeding and is quite active – she was walking within hours of the birth,” added Renee. At almost 60 years of age, Siam was the oldest elephant in Australia. She had spent the past decade living out a long and happy retirement at Australia Zoo alongside Bimbo and Sabu. On Monday evening Siam had been grazing in acreage at the back of the zoo with Bimbo and Sabu as she does every evening. Siam passed away suddenly from kidney failure and was found in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Due to Siam’s age, Australia Zoo had been monitoring her health, but there was no indication of any kidney problem. The Australia Zoo family loved Siam dearly. As the largest of their three Asian elephants, she was affectionate, cheeky and endearing. She will be sorely missed.

Cathy said because of the funding they had received from Sunshine Coast Council they would be able to offer paid work for an artist or artist and their crew to develop the design and complete artwork on three external walls of the building. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in expressing an interest in doing the work, photos and examples of work will need to be provided directly to Cathy. “As we want the building to become a community icon that reflects what is important to our young people, the successful artist would need a willingness to collaborate on designs for the project,” she said. Since Cathy started working at BADYACC – the centre has been undergoing a major makeover. So far the work has included both indoor painting and an outdoor street art mural on the front of the building. With this project the transformation will be complete. Doing the makeover to the centre is all about creating a safe and comfortable environment where young people can feel relaxed and happy to interact with others. Community News Feeling the love for CWA

By Lea Parkes The CWA ladies of Beerwah held a very tasty morning tea last Wednesday just in time for Valentine’s Day at their rooms in Simpson Street. The sweet and gorgeously packaged homemade treats were a big hit with the local business people and plenty of other locals who dropped in for a cuppa. The CWA ladies would like to thank everyone that came along and supported them. The funds raised on the day went to the QCWA Disaster Fund and the raffle was won by Tam from Video Ezy. Beerwah CWA President Donna-Kay Donnovan said it was great to see the groups newer members enthusiastically taking up the fundraising cause. Early last year the Beerwah CWA was struggling for membership and GCNews helped them put the word out to encourage local ladies to become involved. They now have nine active members and they are hoping to attract more. Donna said, “there are quite a few younger members now who are stay at home mums – so they bring their little ones along to the meetings - which has definitely added a new dimension to the group.” Jade Dixon who is one of group’s younger members said she loves baking – and the CWA is a perfect way to be able to bake and then share her goodies with others. They currently have their meetings on the first Monday of the month from 9.30am at their rooms on Simpson Street, and have decided that following their monthly meetings they will be having informal craft sessions where you can bring along any type of craft that you do and work on it there. If you would like to see the ladies in action you will be able to see them at the Peachester Hall on February 23 when they will be doing the catering for the Peachester CWA ladies Village Markets. And as you would expect with their younger membership, they also now have a Facebook page that you can like and keep up to date with what they are doing, just search Facebook for QCWA Beerwah. The trip I recently travelled for nine months on a trip to celebrate my retirement at the end of 2011. My journey began in Brisbane on Australia Day 2012. I drove a Suzuki Grand Vitara and towed a Camel camper trailer. I made my way down the east coast as far as Batemans Bay, stopping at places like Fingal and Nelson Bay. From Batemans Bay I headed to Adelaide via Wagga Wagga and Mildura. Nearly three weeks were spent on Kangaroo Island and I then explored both the Yorke and Fleurieu Peninsulas before heading to the Eyre Peninsula and then across the Nullarbor. A mate had joined me in Adelaide and we had a great time playing the world’s longest golf course (over 1400km) which starts in Ceduna and finishes in Kalgoorlie. There are holes at each of the roadhouses across the Nullarbor – most of them very rough and tough, but it’s a fantastic experience! After visiting the south-west of WA – Esperance, Albany and Margaret River – I headed up the west coast. There were some wonderful places along the way including Kalbarri, Coral Bay and Exmouth. After a week in Broome I made my way eastwards through places such as the Swimming with a whale shark on the Ningaloo Reef

Bungle Bungles (Purnululu), Kununurra and Timber Creek and then spent a bit over a week in Katherine and Litchfield National Park. West Beach, Cape Leveque The journey continued to Mt Isa via Tennant Creek and Camooweal and then I turned north to Croydon via the Burke and Wills Roadhouse and ultimately to Cairns. I then spent a few weeks in beautiful places like Wonga Beach and Cooktown before the southward journey took me to Mission Beach, Hydeaway Bay, Cape Hillsborough and Bundaberg before I arrived back in Brisbane after nearly nine months and 33,000km. Highlights/Favourite Places As you can imagine, these were numerous. Some of the outstanding ones were: Kangaroo Island, which is a wonderful place to see wildlife in all shapes and forms – I had a koala sleeping in the tree over my camp and a kangaroo inside my annex; the golf across the Nullarbor; a flight over the Abrolhos Islands off Geraldton; Kalbarri, a beautiful coastal town; swimming with a whale shark on the Ningaloo Reef off Exmouth; Cobbold Gorge which is a hidden jewel south of Georgetown; and Wonga Beach, the friendliest caravan park in Australia! Advice to others planning to travel My two pieces of advice would be: be flexible – you never know when you will find a place where you want to stay longer (or leave sooner!); grab opportunities as they occur – you never know if/when you will pass that way again.

Difficult to believe

Jaylene Musgrave states in the February 6 issue of GCNews (letters to the Editor) that there is an increase in size of ‘semis’ and that there are triples using Coonowrin Road. It is very difficult to believe much of what she has to say because if you have a look at the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) website, you will see that the size of ‘semis’ has not increased for many years. As far as triple vehicles are concerned, they are not allowed to come any further east than Mitchell in Queensland let alone Coonowrin Road! Now don’t get me wrong, of course there is a problem, but most likely each one of us, either directly or indirectly, has used trucks at some stage in our building sites and road works as well as for our general highways and byways. Remember the complaints when there is a land slip or when potholes form after heavy rain? The problem is exacerbated by the swift increase in our population on our beautiful Sunshine Coast who all need housing and roads. Naturally, this causes an increase in the number of trucks. New Year clean start for Peachester Playgroup

Did you lose power in the recent wild weather?

If like us you lost your electricity supply in the wild weather of Australia Day weekend, you may be entitled to a Disaster Recovery Payment by the government. If your principal place of residence was without electricity, water, gas, sewage services or another essential service for a continuous period of 48 hours you may be eligible for payments of $1,000.00 per eligible adult and $400.00 per eligible child in your household. All you have to do is call 180 22 66 or go to http://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/ publications/em046 and complete the claim form. Although the information sheet does not state Sunshine Coast Council area, when I rang I was told that even though we are not yet a registered area, if they receive enough calls from particular suburbs they will declare it a registered area. The officer I spoke to said that because we had experienced the power outage for more than 24 hours we are entitled to the payment. And that the more people who apply the more likely we would become a registered area. The website is a little confusing, but they are taking applications from any geographic location that was affected if you meet their criteria that is listed there. I rang on a Saturday as they are working seven days a week at the moment to process all the applications. That should help re-stock the fridge and freezer! Leanne Cox Mooloolah Valley

The last timetable review was implemented in 2011 and since then commuters have been voicing their disappointment at the removal of several express services from this timetable. I have provided the Minister with a formal submission on behalf of the Glass House community seeking assistance with timetable issues in the first instance. The community can be assured this is next on my agenda however it is possible that changes could still be some time ahead due to the ramifications such timetable alterations will have on the rail network as a whole. North Coast Rail Duplication

Many of your readers would know that I have long campaigned for funds to complete the North Coast Rail Duplication and even held my own MP Train Day with Minister Scott Emerson in mid2011 to highlight the need for this project and to hear feedback first hand from regular commuters. Last month I did the trip again in order to get an update from travellers on their experiences and suggestions for improvements. Whilst the North Coast Rail Duplication was raised by commuters, most people understand the message that our Government is focused on rebuilding the state’s finances before committing to definite dates for construction projects of this scale. I gave them my commitment however that I will continue to work with the Minister and his Department to do whatever I can to deliver this project before the estimated 2031 timeline. There are some targets that I believe are more achievable in the short term, one of which is better communication methods with passengers regarding on-train delays. Feedback from commuters was that much angst could be avoided if delays could be explained in transit. This did not occur while on my trip where we

This year began with all the Peachester Playgroup mums pitching in for a working bee clean-up of the shed, toys and grounds. What a great job done, we were so pleased with ourselves! So you can imagine that we have been quite disheartened this week when we arrived at Playgroup both Tuesday and Thursday to find each time damage to our retaining wall and red mud all over the paths and area where the children play. Our table that the children put their water bottles on was left out in the open to the elements, so is now all warped and swollen. The sandpit was all uncovered with food wrappers and rubbish left all over the place. And somebody had even allowed their dog to foul at the bottom of the children's slide and left it! We are always happy for the communities’ families to use our playground as it is not owned or maintained by the local council – but by us mums. But we do ask please can you put your rubbish in the bin by the gate and treat the playground with the same respect as our children do, they have so much fun and enjoyment there. We are all volunteers that help run and maintain the playgroup and grounds and we are trying our hardest to keep a good standard for all the families in Peachester to enjoy. Honey-filled Grevillea Of the approximately 350 species of Grevillea endemic to Australia, this one caught my eye on our travels around Australia in 2007. Unlike the well-known Silky oak or the local Grevillea banksii this small prickly bush thrives in the harsh climate and nutrient-poor soils of inland WA. It was taken with a small Canon PowerShot A75 with a Shutter Speed of 1/160, Aperture

of f2.8. This brought the main area of interest, the flower, into focus while blurring the background. The colours were enhanced a little in Photoshop.

Favourite Sunshine Coast Places with Cr Rick Baberowski I always enjoy going to these two attractive community facilities, but it’s the setting around the Beerwah library and community hall, that are for me particularly special. The view from the veranda over-looking the lily ponds into Turner Park is one of my many favourite places in Beerwah. It still seems relatively

underutilised and I often wonder if groups or visitors to the hall and library take the opportunity to pause on the veranda before strolling across the bridge into our hidden gem of Turner Park and wetlands beyond. There’s work to be done in improving the access, facilities and plantings of Turner Park but it still remains a great park for young families and there’s also network of pathways to walk around. Have another look next time you visit the library or hall. While speaking of hidden gems, the range of workshops on offer at the library never ceases to impress me and they are all generally run for free. I recently picked up some flyers that had workshops ranging from healthy lifestyles and financial planning to sustainable living and writing blogs successfully. If you know any newcomers to the area make sure you introduce them to this part of Beerwah and I’d encourage everyone to join the library’s mailing list so you can find out about upcoming workshops.

Senior Tourism Consultant Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre

Climbing Mt Ngungun It’s 5.30am on Thursday, January 17 and I’m standing at the base of Mt Ngungun looking at a bunch of extremely keen and eager people. These people are a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers from the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Centre. I really wasn’t sure what to expect as this is the first time in my life I have come face to face with a mountain walk. Off I go and there are a couple in the group who have taken it a bit easier so we walk and talk occasionally stopping to catch our breath and take in the scenery. After about 40 - 45 mins of walking and a little rock climbing (nearer the top), I’m finally at the top and ‘oh my, what a view’. We sneak out onto the ledge to the right then head right to the tip of the mountain where the rest of the group has been waiting patiently for us. The 360 degree views are fantastic and although the morning is a little hazy we could see out to the coast, up the coastline north and south and across to Mt Beerwah and Mt Coonowrin. The mountains look amazing and from here almost blend together as one mountain.

' Our return trip took us approximately 1.5 hours in length with a stop at the top. I could never have done this climb without the encouragement and guidance from this wonderful group of people, and climbing Mt Ngungun will help me with directing people as they come through the information centre.

The first Parliamentary session for 2013 focused on the experiences and recovery effort for many of the state electorates throughout Queensland. Members were encouraged to share the stories of people within their community who suffered at the hands of this natural disaster event. The latest release of Government information to the Government’s primary website – www.qld.gov.au was announced late last year. The idea behind this website is to provide a single point of access to Government information with topics such as consumer rights, bike paths and cultural activities. There are three new sections – Transport and Motoring, Your Rights, Crime and the Law and Recreation, Sports and Arts. Other sections have been updated including Parents and Families and Environment, Land and Water. Development of this site is part of the Government’s program to provide more convenient access to services for all Queenslanders while improving efficiency and reducing costs through the use of technology.

Over the past few weeks we faced a real test as a State; our coastline is still showing scars of ex-tropical Cyclone Oswald with metres of sand lost from our beaches, while residents continue to clean-up. The road to recovery will continue into the months ahead for some and there is no doubt it will be long, but out of the tragedy has come countless stories of residents pulling together to assist each other and big businesses chipping in to help where they could. The Mooloolah Valley IGA, like thousands of residents and businesses in the Hinterland, were left without power for days and with the potential to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of stock, Energex stepped up and provided the small business with a generator to keep them up and running until full power could be reactivated. This is a great example of community spirit and I commend Energex for helping out. As we continue to restore our great State, more funding has become available for local sporting and recreational clubs. Clubs across the Coast are eligible for grants up to $25,000 under the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program, to replace much-needed equipment and repair clubhouses and grounds. Grassroots sporting and recreation clubs are the backbone of the Caloundra community and the Newman Government is committed to ensuring they’re able to get back on track as soon as possible. The one-off funding grants can be applied for from Sport and Recreation Service Centres, at www.nprsr.qld.gov.au or by calling 1300 656 191. Applications will remain open until Friday, May 10. By Lea Parkes For those looking to the future and trying to understand how it all works, it can be quite confusing! Speaking to Chris Minetti the Village Manager at Embracia in Glasshouse Country, she explained that the terminology these days is different, and you need to make sure you understand what it means so that you can plan ahead. Traditionally what might have been known as a nursing home – is now called an aged care facility. Within that facility, a range of different types of care may be provided depending on the individual client’s requirements. The aged care facility offers 24 hour a day nursing and personal care, with options for low care, high care, palliative care, memory support care (for dementia patients) as well as respite care. In the retirement village, residents live independently as part of a village made up of 24 individual two and three bedroom villas, along with its own stylish club house, heated swimming pool and barbeque areas. The village will eventually incorporate 73 villas over a number of stages; it is a boutique establishment which is designed for residents who are over 60.

“One of the benefits to the village residents is that if they need an increased amount of care as they age they’re given priority placement at the Aged Care Facility – which gives them great peace of mind,” Chris said. It also means that if a couple moves into a villa and one of them needs additional care they can move into the Aged Care Facility and their husband / wife is basically just next door. They can still spend time together each day, but their physical care needs are taken care of by a health care professional. Throughout the conversation, Chris kept returning to the same point – that people need to think ahead and plan for how they want to spend their older years. Sadly, for many families when the time comes for their loved one to go into care, they are suddenly left with no choices. They are just stuck with what’s available – which does not always end in a great results both for the resident and their family. As we age we hear the saying ‘use it or lose it’ which can refer to both physical and mental capacity. With the amazing variety of what’s available through the University of the third age (U3A) you really don’t have any excuse for not using your grey matter. U3A Sunshine Coast Inc. is a self-help non-profit organisation with 2,200 members locally which operates throughout the Sunshine Coast and hinterland. U3A membership comprises Third Agers who have completed their working lives but wish to continue to learn and broaden their horizons; generally they range in age from 50-90, median age 60-65. They offer 160 courses in venues from Caloundra, the University, the Hinterland, Nambour and to Coolum which allows you to learn for the joy of learning. U3A offers academic and skills subjects, arts and crafts and social activities and the best part is that there are no exams - the year is divided into four terms, similar to school terms. For an annual membership fee, members can attend as many classes / activities as they wish. However some classes may have a waiting list and some classes may be in venues that require a contribution from the members. Many of us didn’t have the best role model in our fathers, which makes it even harder to know what’s expected of us as husbands, fathers, and godly men in every other aspect of life. One of the problems we discussed is that we don’t actually have a rite of passage that officially initiates us into manhood. Other cultures have all sorts of weird and painful ceremonies: Vanuatu-Land Diving, EthiopiaNaked Cow Jumping, an Amazon Tribe named the Satere-Mawe wears a woven glove lined with bullet ants for 10 minutes to become a man! When I look back over the first few years of marriage, I can see the line was still blurred between whether I was a man or not. Even though I now had a wife and was purchasing our own home, I spent more time on the play station than doing anything for anyone else.

Paul said in his letter to the Corinthians, ‘When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.’ I’ve seen 40-year-olds that haven’t done that yet. Jesus also called Peter to kick it up a notch in his calling to be a man of God, naming him ‘The Rock,’ that the new church would be able to count on him as a stable, secure leader with strong character and faith. Are you that man for your family? Can our wives count on us to be our family’s security and strength, or are we too self-absorbed and immature to be the men that our society needs us to be? Last Saturday the Wah Bah at Beerwah Hotel was full of young (and young at heart) people who were there to support Beerwah local Alicia McNamara with her â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Floodraiser 2013â&#x20AC;&#x2122; event. Pride Festival celebrates diversity

More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the Sunshine Coast Pride Festival at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, February 24. USC is hosting the 2013 festival’s major Picnic and Fair Day at the Sippy Downs campus from 12.00noon to 4.00pm. It will be the final event of a three-day festival, celebrating the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community at various Coast locations from February 22 - 24. USC Student Equity and Diversity Officer Marjorie Blowers, who is coordinating the fair, said the gold coin donation event would involve entertainment, stalls, food vans and children’s activities. The USC Art Gallery also will be open. Ms Blowers said the festival’s organising committee expected many visitors from interstate as the local community joined friends and family in a fun celebration of diversity.

Coast residents can get involved in the nation’s largest community-based environment event by registering a local site now for Clean Up Australia Day. Sunshine Coast Council is calling on the community to register areas such as parks, beaches and walking trails to clean up at the event, which is on Sunday, March 3. Council is inviting local people to pick out their favourite spot to clean up on the day – it might be a local park, beach, walking trail, or bush reserve – and register with Clean Up Australia. Council will provide free waste disposal as well as arrange waste and recyclables collection for all registered areas in the Sunshine Coast region at the event. Last year during Clean Up Australia Day on the Coast, 23 tonnes of rubbish was removed almost two tonnes of recyclables was collected. The most interesting item collected last year was a safe. Growing Bromeliad plants indoors

Bromeliads are excellent indoor plants. They have colorful, long-lasting inflorescence (flowers) and some have brilliantly colored foliage as well. Bromeliads also readily adapt to the unfavorable growing conditions that exist in most homes. Although many bromeliads are epiphytic, living on branches and trunks of trees or on rocks in their native habitat, most can be grown in containers. Clay and plastic pots are equally satisfactory as containers unless the plants are large, in which case the heavier clay pot is more stable. Because plastic pots retain moisture longer than clay pots, plants grown in the former need watering less frequently than those in the latter. Epiphytic bromeliads can also be grown in perforated plastic baskets and clay pots like those used for other epiphytic plants such as orchids. Because bromeliads rarely have extensive roots, relatively small pots are adequate for most plants. Terrestrial plants do not have to be moved into larger pots until their roots completely fill the current container. Move young epiphytes into pots one size larger every spring, however, until the maximum convenient pot size has been reached. Some epiphytic bromeliads, such as the gray-scaled Tillandsia, grow poorly if planted in a conventional potting mixture. They grow best in a mix such as tree-fern bark, cork-oak bark, or on a tree-fern slab, or pieces of wood. To mount a plant on one of these materials, wrap the base of the plant (including roots, if any) in sphagnum moss, and tie the wrapped base to its support by winding plastic-coated wire around the moss and the supporting material. Fasten the ends of the wire firmly but in such a way that it can be easily untied. Hang the mounted specimens in a convenient place. Spray the sphagnum moss and plant with water frequently enough to prevent complete drying of the moss. After supportive roots grow over the sphagnum moss and around the mount, remove the temporary wire. To keep the plant alive and healthy, water the plant, its roots, and the supportive materials twice weekly throughout the year. Water can be applied as a spray or the entire mounted plant can be submerged in water for a few minutes. The humidity around plants will influence their need for water. The humidity in a home which is heated during the winter months or cooled with air-conditioning during the summer months can be very low and plants may need to be watered more frequently than those grown in a moist environment.

Great trees for Glasshouse Country

Late last year, I started my campaign to highlight wonderful larger trees that people with bigger blocks of land can plant and leave as future ‘legacy trees’. Here’s another for you to think about planting this weekend – buying and planting a tree for someone is a great late Valentine’s Day present … a mark of your eternal love for someone, and a good way to get yourself out of the doghouse for forgetting last Thursday.

African Sausage tree

The African Sausage tree (or Kigelia africana) is one of those great conversation-starter trees. Plant one and once it flowers and fruits, complete strangers will stop and ask you “what’s that tree mate?” It’s the long sausage-like seed pod that gives the tree its name and its place as one of the most peculiar specimen trees you can plant. African Sausage tree Coming from tropical Africa, it is an uncommon tree to find, with a nice one easily seen at the Landsborough tennis courts and another at the Palmwoods lagoon. Not only are the fruits unusual, but it has large showy maroon flowers which are pollinated by bats at night. In Africa, the fruits are eaten by baboons, bush pigs, elephants, giraffes, hippopotami, monkeys; and the locals use it as a bush medicine. Flower Fruit Take care as the roots can be invasive and it’s best not to plant the tree where you’ll be parking a car or sitting on a chair – as the seed pods can weigh up to 9kg. In flower right now all over the coast is a multitude of amazing Melaleuca (previously Callistemon) cultivars. The beloved ‘Bottlebrush’ has been a favourite in Aussie gardens for a long time and one of the best is ‘Pink Alma’. It forms into a dense bushy shrub that grows approximately 2.5m x 2m, providing great habitat for small birds. But it is its profusion of bright pink nectar laden flowers that draws the attention of humans and nectar loving birds. Our specimen in the nursery grounds is exploding with colour. The new flush of pink/red growth is also very attractive. It is very hardy and can handle a damp spot in the yard. This really is an excellent screening shrub that is loved by many species of birds. We recommend pruning after flowering to promote a bushy shrub with lots of flowers.

Mountain bike orienteering

It certainly is a case of ‘be careful what you wish for’. Although the rain is setting the course up nicely with green fairways and full dams, it makes enjoying the game at present a little difficult. Having said that, we still had 53 hardy souls come out on Thursday to play a Single Stroke event for trophies donated by Joan Harvey and Helen Thompson. Everyone got a bit wet, but that wasn't enough to put our Ladies Captain Lea Garner off and she came in with a great score of 74 Nett to win Division 1. Because our trophy donor Helen had to leave early, Sue Williamson presented Lea with her prize. Runner up to Lea was Lesley Eggleston with a Nett score of 75. Division 2 winner was Julie McMahon with a Nett score of 76, followed by Di Smith on 78 Nett. NTPs went to Libby Gemmell on 2, Grace Ferguson on 5, and Sonia Kenway took out both 16 and 18. The Ball Rundown went to 80. The Weekend Pennant game at Caloundra Golf Club was a wash out and has been re scheduled for May 12. We are hoping for a fine day next Sunday when we take on the team from Peregian Springs at Headland Golf Course. Until next week, stay safe and good golfing.

The Sunshine Orienteers Club is running two mountain bike orienteering events this March. A 'Come and Try it' event on Saturday, March 2 in the afternoon in the Beerwah State Forest - two courses available. Experienced people on hand to assist any new comers and ride the course with you if needed. Tennis club AGM

The Landsborough Tennis Club will be holding their AGM on March 18, at 7.00pm at their Club house, Maleny Road Landsborough. They welcome all members and non members within the community to attend. Despite the rain, the Mooloolah Soccer Club sign on was a wonderful success. The first player to register for 2013 was Zane. He is new to the club and very excited about the season ahead. Training starts this Wednesday at 4.00pm at the soccer grounds located on Mooloolah Connection Road, and the first official games / carnivals are on March 9.
