Hi Everyone... Well, for the second time this year we have featured cricket on the front cover, but this time it is definitely not focused on our junior players. This Friday night locals will have the chance to see a Twenty20 match that will pit Queensland’s best veteran cricketers against the Queensland Fire at Landsborough. The game is an initiative of the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Stumps Day and will raise money for breast cancer support. The game will bring home former Glass House Mountains local and ex Australian and Queensland representative Kirsten Pike. Kirsten’s career as a bowler has included 86 Women's National Cricket League matches and 50 Twenty20 matches for Queensland, and one test, 26 one day internationals and 10 Twenty20 games for Australia. She became the first female bowler to take 100 wickets for Queensland in the women's national league series and remains Queensland’s highest wicket taker of all time.

Cover Story Fire to face Veterans in charity match Queensland’s best veteran cricketers are set to take on the Konica Minolta Queensland Fire in a Twenty20 match under lights at Landsborough. The match, to be played at Landsborough Cricket Club on Friday, February 22, will raise money for breast cancer support as part of the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Stumps Day initiative. The Veterans team to take on the Fire on Friday will include former Queensland Bulls fast bowler Greg Rowell, ex Australian and Queensland representatives Katherine Raymont and Kirsten Pike, plus members of the Queensland and Australian over 50s, 60s and 70s sides. The match will be the first hit-out for the Queensland Fire since its Women’s National Cricket League final loss to NSW on February 9 and will continue the growth and promotion of women’s cricket on the Sunshine Coast. The region currently has eight teams playing in all-female senior competitions, up from four in 2016-2017, and four all-girl junior teams playing in the Sunshine Coast Heat Girls Cricket League. Queensland Cricket’s general manager of community cricket John Stock said the match between the Queensland Fire and Veterans teams should provide a great spectacle and will showcase two of cricket’s fastest-growing segments - female and veterans cricket. “We encourage all fans on the Sunshine Coast to get along to Landsborough Cricket Club for what should be a fantastic game and an even better

Local News Glass House graffiti vandal caught Local Glass House business operators have helped police bust an alleged serial vandal responsible for a spate of graffiti incidents in Glass House Mountains in the previous week. Last Thursday morning Beerwah Police distributed photos and put the call out to the community to help them identify a man, who they described as having a tattoo on the back of his right leg and wearing distinctive shoes. Assisted by information provided by businesses in Glass House Mountains, Beerwah Police Senior Sergeant Tully Anderson said police were able to identify the residence of the alleged offender, where they found an extendible baton, drugs, utensils, ammunition and fireworks at the Glass House Mountains home. The man was charged with 18 offences including 11 graffiti charges and multiple drug-related charges. As part of his strict bail conditions, he must report to Beerwah Police Station three times a week, is banned from entering the Glass House Mountains town centre and is not allowed at any public train stations. Senior Sergeant Anderson said the man had been charged with similar offences in Victoria. He will appear in Caloundra Magistrates Court on March 13. Beerwah Police thanked the community for their assistance in helping find and charge the offender.

Shopping centre site for sale Locals may have noticed a sale sign on the block of land before the Glass House Mountains township intersection. In May 2018, GC&M News reported that Sunshine Coast Council had approved plans to build a new shopping centre on the site adjoining Bruce Parade and Steve Irwin Way, which was subsequently postponed to May 20 this year. The approved development plans, submitted by the Luke family before they sold to the Glass House IGA, was for a neighbourhood shopping centre, including a supermarket and possibly ten specialty stores. The 2.19 hectare site is being sold by expressions of interest – closing March 14 – through commercial real estate specialists CBRE at Mooloolaba.

Glass House NBN tower update
A legal appeal opposing construction of an NBN wireless broadband tower at Link Road in Glass House Mountains has been withdrawn by local residents Giovanni and Giuseppina Chessa in the Planning and Environment Court. A 50m monopole was approved by Sunshine Coast Council in June 2017, resulting in the appeal by Mr and Mrs Chessa. Their appeal stated that “… the development ought to be refused because it conflicts with the relevant instruments and no other relevant considerations which justify approval of the proposed development”. However, a notice lodged last Tuesday with the Planning and Environment Court by the Chessa’s legal representative, Andrew Williams from P&E Law, advised that they were discontinuing their
proceedings against the tower. When asked about the reason not to go ahead with the appeal, Mr Williams was circumspect. “I understand this is an important issue for the community but I am unable to comment upon the resolution of the appeal,” Mr Williams said. The tower structure on Old Gympie Road at Glass House – located within the Spirit of Cobb and Co complex – has been erected and is being fitted out with the required technology. This leaves the Peachester (Range Road) and Beerburrum (Red Road) towers still in the design phase, with construction dates yet to be confirmed. In Maleny, the Balmoral Ridge (Sinclairs Lane) and Maleny (Burgess Avenue) towers remain locked in their respective appeals process through the Planning and Environment Court.

Six-lanes from Caboolture a step closer Detailed design to widen the Bruce Highway to six lanes between Caboolture and Steve Irwin Way is about to start, setting the project up for a 2020 construction start date. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said design was due to start on the $662.5 million jointlyfunded project. “We are committed to busting congestion and making roads safer around Australia,” Mr McCormack said. Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the project was one of four major Bruce Highway upgrades either under construction or being planned between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. “Construction on the major upgrade between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway is powering ahead and is on track to be completed by late 2020,” Mr Bailey said. “As well as the 11 kilometre stretch we are planning to upgrade between Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and the southern end of Steve Irwin Way, we also expect construction to start on the $150 million Deception Bay Road Interchange
and $105 million for smart motorways projects in 2020 too. “These are projects that will make a massive difference to the journey between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, and all are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022, weather and construction conditions permitting,” Mr Bailey said. Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said the upgrade would widen the highway from four to six lanes and improve flood immunity from Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to Steve Irwin Way. “The project will also replace 10 bridges over Lagoon Creek, King Johns Creek, Six Mile Creek, Rose Creek and Beerburrum Creek,” Mr Wallace said. “No matter where you live, we are investing to make sure you can get home sooner and safer, and I am pleased to see this important project one step closer to becoming a reality.” For further details about planning for the Bruce Highway between Pine River and Caloundra, visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Projects/Name/B/ Bruce-Highway-Pine-River-to-Caloundra-RoadInterchange-Planning-Project.

Rob Bowen Business owner and head coach of Ground Force (BJJ and MMA) Landsborough With the recent opening of Rob’s new martial arts training centre in Landsborough, GC&M News was keen to find out more about Rob’s personal journey and his passion for Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) and mixed martial arts (MMA). Q: How did you first get into martial arts? Fitness was the initial reason and also to improve my balance for surfing. My interest started around the age of 17. I started with boxing and then moved into martial arts. At the time, as a young man growing up in Shell Harbour, it was important to know how to defend yourself, but what I really liked was how martial arts could transform people’s lives. It also helped me discover my inner strength and sense of self. Q: When did you first start instructing and why? I first started instructing around 1984. I think it was a natural progression from my training at that time. Q: What do love about the sport? The problem-solving aspect of the art/sport, also the comradery. BJJ, for example, promotes a very friendly culture based on mutual respect and comradery. Elements of respect and cooperation underpin the sport and it encourages a culture
of assisting others to learn through give and take. You are not there to fight, you are there to learn to defend yourself. It is not based in rigid traditions but is a modern evolving artform where respect is earnt by hard work. Q: What are some of your martial arts achievements? I’ve attained multiple black belts in other systems, however my biggest achievements come from helping others attain theirs. I’ve helped novices attain black belts, trained kickboxers to international levels, BJJ competitors to national levels and personal trained a plethora of athletes. Q: How have you seen peoples’ lives transformed through BJJ and MMA? It is unbelievable the transformation that happens with everyone almost straight away, mainly in their mindset. Once they are committed you start to see small goals being achieved. These then set the blueprint for the future. Q: What types of benefit do you see for participants? It Improves cardio fitness, strengthens your body, you learn effective self protection, it builds confidence, increases your group of friends and ultimately provides a more positive outlook on life.

Q: What do you enjoy about living and working in the hinterland? Can’t go past the lifestyle here! Q: Why have you established the new hinterland training facility? I wanted to bring to the hinterland something different and unique. There is already boxing, Muay Thai and taekwondo gyms, but not what we offer in BJJ and freestyle MA. At the facility we start with the fundamentals and progress through to advanced attributes. What we offer is particularly good for women as a defensive mechanism as you can learn to utilise body positions to control (neutralise) a bigger opponent. We also target beginners and provide those interested who may have had no previous training a chance to learn skills step by step at their own pace. You don’t need to be an athlete to get involved – it suits all fitness levels. Brazilian jiu-jitsu has revolutionised the grappling arts and has evolved through trial and error into the superior art form it is today. It is multi-variational as techniques can be adaptive to suit different body types and fitness levels. Finally, for those wishing to compete we mentor for that as well.

On Wednesday, March 6 during Queensland Women’s Week, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre in conjunction with the Zonta Club of the Blackall Range will host two free workshops for women that are all about getting back to basics when managing money. The workshops will be presented by Nicole Hilton from the Maleny Credit Union, who described the environment at the Neighbourhood Centre as relaxed and welcoming and a great spot for tackling this daunting topic. Nicole is looking forward to sharing with participants the importance of and the ‘how to’ of creating a personal budget and discussing how to managecredit/debit cards and after pay facilities. She is also hoping to touch on the topic of credit ratings and how important it is to understand that the financial decisions you make today can impact your future credit rating. The two workshops will be offered from 9.30-11.30am and 1-3pm with lunch and morning or afternoon tea provided. Maleny Neighbourhood Centre coordinator Nooreen Harris is keen for local women to take advantage of these free sessions and is encouraging those interested to book their spot by calling the centre on 5499 9345. “We have been fortunate that we have been able to partner with the Zonta Club of Blackall Range who were successful in accessing state government funds for the initiative,” Nooreen said.

You Said It Misleading statements
I would like to question why elected representative Mr McArdle publicly stated on Twitter in late January “… the incompetent Transport Minister Mark Bailey …” and then “How on earth does he (Mr Bailey) keep his job?” Does he genuinely desire cooperation with the other party? Or is it to sabotage any relationship so he can then broadcast how uncooperative the government is? Mr McArdle has already helped to set up a group of retailers that the community cannot join and has refused to let me attend meetings as an observer. Mr McArdle then arranged a clandestine meeting with the Minister to promote the group’s own interests, making sure that the community’s interests were suppressed. Later he misleadingly claimed that the public should join this group, which does not allow public membership and whose interests are not aligned with or consider the community in any way (GC&M News, August 29, ‘You said it’ comment regarding its nature by Landsborough Area Community Association (LACA)). Mr McArdle is fully aware that LACA has launched a rail overpass sub-committee that welcomes the whole community, unlike the group exclusive to businesses with the objective to serve their own interests that he has founded. The LACA group’s inaugural meeting was scheduled for February 12 as I write this, and Mr McArdle’s hastiness to convene a meeting before our community has familiarised, considered, discussed and organised itself is questionable. Such a meeting is sure to be shambolic, just like the chaotic January 2016 meeting, and can only serve to aid his own agenda. Slogans like: “… it (a bypass) would kill Landsborough” and “… bypasses have devastated communities in NSW towns” are grossly false. A 2012 university study concluded that NSW towns have prospered from road bypasses, and both communities and commerce of all towns in South East Queensland with new road bypasses have prospered as a result, eg, Beaudesert, Cooroy, Nambour and it has turned Beerwah into (arguably) the biggest boom-town in SEQ. Federal MP Lew O’Brien and Cooloola Coast business leaders also predict unprecedented prosperity to the Cooloola Coast by the planned Gympie bypass and millions of dollars of investment have been fast-tracked. 50% renewable energy targets
When is our Queensland Premier going to tell us how much her 50% renewable energy target by 2030 is costing? How many hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies are being paid to the owners of the 94 solar farms with 16,000MW capacity announced in Queensland and how much will their electricity cost us? ARENA [Australian Renewable Energy Agency] benchmarks solar electricity at $135/MWh and electricity from new coal power plants costs about $65/ MWh. Around 9am in Queensland 7,000MW are generated from fossil fuels/hydro and 80MW from wind and solar. Our eight main coal power stations have a nameplate capacity of 8,070MW and provide the continuous baseload power that we need. Coal power stations are designed to operate at high capacity and when government intervention limits that operation they quickly become uneconomic. Wind and solar power are intermittent (no wind or sun – no electricity). The 16,000MW nameplate capacity of the Queensland solar farms reduces to about 25% or six hours a day when the sun shines. Battery storage costs are prohibitive and South Australia’s big battery hype is a flop. Since the Paris Agreement in late 2015, new coal power plants built around the world are generating 92,345MW. 59 more countries, recognising that CO2 gas is not a pollutant, have announced a further 708 coal power plants to generate around 670,000MW. It’s ironic that other countries, using our coal, are enjoying the cheap, reliable power that Australia once had. In January 2019 the average daily spot price of electricity in Queensland was $93.91/MWh, in Victoria $250.33/MWh and in South Australia $241.02/MWh. Premier Palaszczuk’s ‘virtue signalling’ with intermittent wind and solar power will have little effect on the environment but will inflict on Queensland the same

Climate of confusion
In the coming weeks and months, the looming federal election will undoubtedly take up more than its fair share of media space. It seems already the hotly contested seat of Warringah, taking in Sydney's northern beaches, will receive special attention as Tony Abbott does his best to defend his turf. Maybe his time is up. I would be keen to see more independents in parliament. I was a bit surprised, however, at the tactics of possible front-runner, the former Olympian Zali Steggall, by bringing in Tim Flannery to help with her campaign. This is the bloke whose imaginative ‘climate change’ predictions led to the construction of multiple desalination plants in cities around Australia at a total cost of $12 billion. Yet even the troubled Perth water supply has recently filled with spring rains, full for the first time in 28 years. Does ‘climate change’ now include global cooling? NASA scientists recently acknowledged that the Sun has cooled since February 2016, and that Earth is feeling the effects of this. Indeed, solar observing scientists predicted the very cold winter across the Northern Hemisphere, ‘climate change’ scientists did not. But it seems based on media reports lately the cold is being claimed as one of the effects of climate change. Confused? It seems action to ‘save the climate’ will get big billing as the election draws nearer. It would be nice to see some action from thoughtful journalists, academics and scientists in challenging some of the bizarre, confusing and arguably incongruous claims being made about the climate.

Beerwah Writers Group Contributed by Patty Beecham We recently farewelled two original members of the group, which was established 12 years ago. Locals John and Kate Wright are moving to Sydney to be nearer to family. Their contribution and strong writing skills will be missed but, as they pointed out, email keeps us all connected. They have encouraged, advised and edited many young writers in the Beerwah and hinterland region. John suggested that the digital age is well and

7 Tips For First Home Buyers Are you planning to buy your first home? To help you, we’ve put together some things to think about. 1) Save a deposit. If you are thinking of buying your first home, you should already be saving for a deposit. The bigger your deposit, the better your chances of securing a home loan and the less interest you’ll have to pay. 2) Get to know your concessions. As a first home buyer, you may be eligible for first home buyer grants and incentives like stamp duty concessions. Talk to your Smartline Mortgage Adviser about concessions currently available to you in your state or
territory. First home buyer concessions could save you thousands. 3) Arrange pre-approval. Pre-approval is an indication from a bank of how much they are willing to lend you. It involves submitting details of your financial position and the borrowing requirement that you have in mind. 4) Minimise your debts. Clear your credit card debt and get rid of any cards you don’t need. Also, be sure to pay all your bills on time so you have a clear credit history. 5) Calculate all the costs. The price of the property is not the only cost involved when purchasing your first
home. You will also need to calculate stamp duty, the cost of building and pest inspections, moving costs, loan administration fees and conveyancer fees. Your Smartline Adviser can help you calculate everything so you know how much you can afford to spend. 6) Do your research. Research the district you want to buy into. Get to know the local real estate agents as they can be a good source of knowledge of the local housing market. 7) Get support. The home loan market is complex and fluctuating. Your Smartline Adviser can help you negotiate the market, research
finance options, take you through the paperwork and secure you the most suitable home loan with a competitive rate. Ready to talk about buying your first home? Book a chat with your Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser Teresa Harrison today.

Hinterland Kids Bug business
Contributed by Sally Joyce Vine weeds, in particular cat's claw creeper and Madeira vine, are a major environmental and economic threat, particularly to our waterways and the creatures that live within that habitat. Enviro Club students at Peachester State School are using their lunch breaks to participate in an ongoing program to biologically reduce infestations of the vines in the Stanley River catchment. Special bugs are being bred at the school so they can then be released to eat these weeds. Last Thursday our Enviro Club students joined forces with Matt Bateman, from Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group (LBCCG), to release 200 jewel beetles (Hylaeogena jureceki) to eat the cat’s claw creeper and 100 leaf feeding beetles (Plectonycha correntina) to eat the Madeira vine. They were released into existing portable enclosures at the school. In about 40 days they will have bred and the first batch should be ready for release into the school grounds or broader community. The portable enclosures are also a valuable resource for our school community to familiarise themselves with what these very invasive weeds look like and take action if they are found on local properties. Enviro Club is a very successful program run by Dorothy Robb at Peachester State School. It is a valuable extracurricular activity where students learn about the environment and gain extra social contact with other students outside of the classroom. We welcome adult volunteers to assist with this program. Please call Peachester State School on 5439 5111 if you are interested in volunteering. Many thanks to Matt from LBCCG and Mooloolah River Landcare for including our students in these projects.

Future for Landsborough Scouts looks bright
The Landsborough Scouts were happy to have a visit from Member for Glass House Andrew Powell and were excited to find out the group would receive $20,229 from the current round of grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. In the past six months the Landsborough Scouts group has grown and will open a Venturer unit for the first time and reopen the Joey Scout section, while the number of Cub Scout and Scout members continues to grow. Group leader Cherie Turbefield said the Landsborough Scouts thanked Andrew Powell for joining the group to help celebrate the successful bid for a grant to improve group facilities, with a new Venturer unit room and storage shed. “The grant will allow us to replace our existing small storage container, which we have outgrown, and provide an area for the Venturers to have their weekly meetings,” Cherie said. “We welcome new members for each section and provide the opportunity for children of all ages to experience outdoor skills and activities in a fun learning environment while making new friends,” she said. New leaders are also welcome with full training provided for any adults in the community interested in Scouting. The Landsborough Scouts meeting schedule is Joey Scouts (5-7.5 years) Mondays 6-7pm, Cub Scouts (7.5-10.5 years) Tuesdays 6-7.30pm, Scouts (10.5- 4.5 years) Thursdays 6-8pm and Venturers (14.5-18 years) Thursdays 6-8pm. If you would like to know more contact Cherie on Landsboroughscouts@gmail.com.
Proposed Obi school to mix it up
The new independent school proposed for the Obi Obi Valley is slowly but surely gaining momentum. The first meeting at the Obi Obi Hall went for more than two hours as ideas were shared and people got to know each other. With the aim to develop a school "for the people, by the people" there was a great mix of ideas while whittling away at what was important. The instigator of the proposed school, Melissa Van Kenyon, was blown away by the enthusiasm. Melissa said one suggestion from the new secretary was the possibility of flexischooling, having morning and night classes. “Another idea from a registered teacher who is willing to volunteer was that the school offer an Aboriginal language,” Melissa said. “I am interested in setting up a Stephanie Alexander kitchen garden and enticing brilliant chefs to make lunch with the kids with food from the garden. “What an excellent and exciting mix this school is shaping up to be,” she said. The school still has places to fill on the committee before it can be incorporated and become a legal entity. It hopes to offer the Australian Curriculum in a fun and practical way in a beautiful environment through the skills and energy of many volunteers. The school is also hoping many retired people will offer their valuable time, skills, patience and quirky/dynamic personalities to build a new generation of happy and healthy children. If you like the idea of a school with a dedicated mud pit, a cool shady hammock rest area and a "let's enjoy this short and wonderful life we have been given" policy, then please contact Melissa at mvankenyon@gmail.com or on 0490 215 632. Meetings are held on the first Monday of every month at Obi Obi Hall at 3.30pm. Children are welcome.

Senior kindy places still available for 2019 The year has now kicked off to a flying start at Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre, however places are still available for children to join the senior kindy program. Since joining the team at Glass House Mountains Early Education Centre last November, early education professional Nikole Chant has settled in well into her new role as lead educator in the senior kindy room. Diploma qualified and with five years industry experience, Nikole brings keenness, enthusiasm and passion to her role and her love of teaching the three to four-year old age group is wonderfully apparent. She says that she particularly enjoys how engaging and interactive children are at this age. “I love how they are able to express themselves and it is lovely to see their personalities emerging. This is a great age for developing a love of learning and increasing independence and as an educator, I love encouraging them,” Nikole said. Every room seeks to develop age appropriate skills to assist in preparing children for the next stage of life. The senior kindy room encourages early literacy skills that incorporate numeracy and literacy development into fun play-based activities. Nikole explains that the current focus is on letter identity and names. “At the moment we are having heaps of fun with learning activities based around the ‘Hungry Catepiller’. The kids get really engaged, especially as they are just so interested in the story and as educators we know that the more engaged and

interested the children are – the more they want to learn”. Healthy eating choices are also actively encouraged at the centre with a family style meal structure and an emphasis on fresh and wholesome age-appropriate meals provided daily by the Healthy Cooking Company. Established by the founders of Queensland Childcare Services to develop healthy eating habits in the children who attend their centres, all children receive daily morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. The popular Hey-Dee-Ho music program has also commenced for the year and is a great example of some of the additional valued added programs provided at no additional cost. This music-based experience program is run fortnightly and encourages participation. This term the children are focussing on learning simple songs accompanied by sign language. Billy’s Buddies sports program is also proving a popular weekly (fee inclusive) football activity, where children learn ball skills, agility and develop spatial awareness. Ginger Sports is another inclusive activity that encourages soccer skills and is a great hit with the kids. One very familiar face for the children at the centre is long-term assistant educator Wendy Dwyer who has been with the centre for over eight years. Wendy helps out in all the rooms, however she is best known as the friendly face of the centres’ bus service. The centre bus operates a daily school run and
a home pickup service. For working parents, children can be dropped off at the centre from 6.30am and Wendy will organise the school run drop off to Glass House, Beerburrum and Beerwah as well as to Glasshouse Christian College. Following the school run Wendy then does the ‘home pickup’ run for younger children attending the centre. The same service runs in the afternoons with Wendy driving to the local schools to pick up the children requiring after school care and dropping off the younger children home. The best thing is that there is no additional charge for this service. For an obligation free tour of the centre or to find out more about availabilities, drop in (no appointment necessary) or contact centre director, Dee on 5438 7311, 2 Page Street Glass House Mountains.

School bus win for Mooloolah
Mooloolah parents have welcomed the recent announcement of a new bus service for children travelling to and from the Maleny High School. Replacing a train trip from Mooloolah to Landsborough, then a connecting bus to Maleny (and reverse in the afternoon), the direct bus connection means less risk of missed connections and late arrivals for young students. Since 2015, Lisa West and a dedicated band of Mooloolah parents have been lobbying local MPs and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), as well as Queensland Government ministers, but to no avail. “Our main issue was that since the introduction of year 7 to high school it meant that children as young as 11 were travelling this train/bus route to school,” Lisa said.

“So we, with the town’s support, were very concerned about the safety of 11-year-old kids being told they had to wait around a train station for up to 30 minutes with no adult supervision. “Rebecca Shepperson and I spent many hours, weeks and months talking with our local state representative, Mark McArdle at the time, and were getting nowhere. “Towards the end of 2017 a petition was written, signed and delivered to Mark McArdle’s office to be submitted on our behalf to the Queensland Parliament.” The petition was signed by 120 parents, representing 43 students currently enrolled at the Maleny school and 97 children expected to attend the school in the following five years. But Lisa found that the road to democracy is sometimes a bumpy one, with a state election in 2017 delaying parliamentary business. “Sometime around early 2018 with the change in state electorate boundaries we asked our now state member – Andrew Powell – to lodge our petition,” Lisa said. A response was received from the TMR and from Education Minister Grace Grace that left the community far from encouraged. “They told us that the STAS [School Transport Assistance Scheme] only funds the BusLink company to provide transport to high school students in the Mooloolah area, but BusLink does not have a service that runs from Mooloolah to Maleny,” Lisa said. “The Education Minister has told us to enrol at Beerwah – but I have been told by our local school principal that all state high schools have been given a directive to reject out-of-catchment enrolments. So this is not an option for us.” Early this year a ray of hope appeared in the form of a notice that the local bus company – Glasshouse Country Coaches – would extend one of its bus runs to include a stop at Mooloolah train station. “This was great news,” Lisa said. “Students from Mooloolah can now catch a dedicated bus from Mooloolah (a few stops in between) to Maleny SHS (and return in the afternoon).” The issue now is the cost - $3.90 for a single trip or $35.10 for a weekly pass, which is a direct cost to the local families as STAS funding does not cover any services in the area provided by Glasshouse Country Coaches. “For some families this cost is prohibitive,” Lisa said. The new service was twice the cost of the existing rail/bus route, she said. “Our argument with the state government now is why Mooloolah students are disadvantaged by paying $1,404 annually to send their kids to Maleny while some of our neighbours are sending their kids to state high schools outside their zones but are able to access STAS, which allows very low cost transport to get to school?” Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, is assisting their cause. “Lisa got fired up about this issue - and rightly so. She brought it to my attention, sponsored and circulated petitions, compiled data, emailed me and the Minister regularly and ultimately called the parents of Mooloolah Valley to action,” Andrew said. "As a result, we now have a bus service to transport Mooloolah kids to their high school. "For the sake of the parents and the bus company, the service now needs to be subsidised by [STAS]. Then, I'm sure, Lisa will truly celebrate."

Whether or not you were a fan of iconic British rock band Queen, it's likely you will leave this screening singing - or at least humming - some of the band’s hit songs and feeling thoroughly entertained. You are probably aware that this dramatic musical biopic has been a massive box office success. This is partly due to the fact that the flamboyant Freddie Mercury, songwriter and lead vocalist of Queen, is played by Rami Malek, highly praised by critics and audiences alike for his electrifying performance, which won him best actor at the British Academy Film Awards. Moreover, authenticity is guaranteed by the involvement of Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor as creative and musical consultants. To add to the experience, we are treated to some of Queen’s most memorable original songs. The film traces the meteoric rise to fame of Farrokh Bursar, a baggage handler at Heathrow Airport, through to his glory years in Queen, to his unsuccessful attempt to go solo and finally culminates in his reunion with the band in 1985 to perform in the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium. He died six years later at the age of 45 from AIDS-related pneumonia, ending an extraordinary musical career in which stereotypes were shattered and boundaries tested, creating a cultural phenomenon. Lucy Boynton plays Mary Austin, Mercury's wife of six years and mother of his child. When: Saturday, February 23 and Sunday, February 24 as a fundraiser for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. In the Garden Community garden with a difference
Community gardens are gaining in popularity and Maleny has a new one with a difference. It’s heritage listed and it’s not just edibles. Friends of Pattemore House have spent many years restoring state heritage listed ‘Fairview’ (Pattemore House) in Porters Lane, North Maleny. They have created an attractive interpretive experience that provides a lens into Maleny life in the past century through the eyes of the families who lived there. Home to several prominent dairy families since 1907, Fairview had a thriving garden that supplied an abundance of fruit, vegetables and flowers. The family who built Fairview, the Pattemores, and the last family to live there, the Armstrongs, featured in the prize winners lists for several fruit, vegetable and decorative plants at the Maleny Agricultural Show. A significant amount of work has been undertaken by the dedicated gardening group of the Friends, supported by Maleny Garden Club, council staff and Cr Jenny McKay, towards restoration of the elegant gardens. New garden beds, a picket fence and gateway, rose arbour and washing line have been reconstructed, and the front path restored. If you want to be involved in this rewarding project, or simply have an interest in heritage properties, the Friends would love to hear from you and invite you to join them in the continuing garden restorations. For more information contact chief garden gnome Mandy on 0407 374 542 or email mandy.mccosker@gmail.com. The gardening group meets twice monthly in summer and once a month in winter. The after-work morning tea on the verandah overlooking the front garden is always scrummy! You may also be interested in some of their other activities such as researching, photo cataloguing or helping at monthly open days. Fairview is open to visitors this Saturday, Fairview gardens under restoration February 23 with tours of the house and gardens from 1-4pm so why not take a look around and drop in for tea?

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Not so poor cousins
Butterflies are possibly the most loved of all insects due to their stunning colours, but there are only 400 species in Australia, whereas their poor cousins, the moths, are represented by more than 20,000 species belonging to 85 different families. Though not as vibrantly coloured, moths nevertheless are still often quite beautiful. There are a number of differences between moths and butterflies, but almost all of these have exceptions. Most moths are nocturnal, have feathery or saw-edged antenna (whereas butterflies have club-shaped antennae), create silky cocoons (not shiny chrysalises) and are usually stout and fuzzy rather than slender and smooth. Moths evolved rapidly following the rise of flowering plants. Many moths are very small, which allows them to take advantage of the vast numbers of tiny niches in natural environments. This is an important reason why there are so many species of moth. Many species come in varying shades of brown, no doubt to aid in camouflage amongst leaf litter, while others have tufted heads, furry wings, clear wings or delicate lace-like wings (pictured). Moths feed on a range of high-energy food sources such as nectar, sap flows, fruit and the sugary secretions of sap-sucking bugs. Moths are important pollinators and recyclers of organic matter and are a source of food for birds and small vertebrates. Some species attack pest insects such as scale. As they are so specialised it makes them more vulnerable to habitat disturbance and loss from intensive agriculture, plantations, mining and urbanisation and also to the effects of agri-chemicals and climate change. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? Visit www.gman-inc.com.au. Bigger is better
with Spencer and Karen Shaw
One of the great generalisations that we’ve been told about native plants is that small tubestock make better trees when planted. This might be true for our very fast-growing eucalypts, wattles and some of the rainforest pioneers, but for many of our rainforest trees a bigger potted plant will increase survival and rate of growth. For years at our property we have been mainly using megatube stock for our rainforest plantings and these have given great results. We are also now producing rainforest plants in four litre pots, which enables us to get a big sun hardened plant to between 750-1250mm … instant rainforest, almost! One hurdle we’ve had in the past in growing advanced stock is that we didn’t like the traditional shallow round pots or bags for growing trees. They encourage poor root development through root coiling. The four litre pots and megatubes we use for growing our trees are deep, square and ridged on the inside to help produce better root systems. The range of plants we have in these larger pots is growing all the time (pardon the pun) and at the moment includes the following – hard quandong, celery wood, bunya pine, small kurrajong and many more.

Christianity and elections It looks like the federal election is on judging by traffic on Facebook, TV and papers. So, what does a Christian pastor say to a congregation when asked, “How should we vote?” Politics is the way people interact in society to influence their preferred view on government or culture. It can be done well or poorly. Politics is not owned by a particular party…or religion for that matter. In Australia, there have been shifts of political parties and what they stand for. They come and go as our culture shifts and changes. No pastor should ever publicly recommend one political party over another based on religious viewpoints. All political parties fall short of the standards required by the Bible. You might have a godly politician leading a party that is far from what God requires, or an ungodly politician leading a party that is perhaps closer to what God requires. While comparing political party platforms may help you make up your mind in choosing candidates, it falls far short of what Christians should do as good citizens.

Sunday Worship & Sunday School 9.00am You may be forced into picking the “lessor of two evils”, but before you do, there are other aspects that you might engage in as you go to the polls. First, in looking over a party’s promises and policies, go to your Bible and find out how they compare with scripture on the sanctity of life, caring for the poor, human dignity, ethical dealings with one another, the laws of God, corruption, lies versus truth, etc. Look for a party that doesn’t stridently flout God, his Christ or his Church. We need to remember that it is God who puts each politician in place for his own purposes and glory. Second, the single most powerful weapon you have next to your vote at the polls are the prayers you give up before the Lord God Almighty before election day. Ask Jesus to raise up godly people to run in every party and be prepared to support them with your prayers, finances and votes. Whichever government gets elected is determined by God. So relax.

Sport Beerwah High swimming carnival
Football season start just around the corner
Contributed by Steve Jeffery This year’s swimming carnival took place amidst some unpredictable weather, but what a fantastic day. Even though the temperature was extreme, the high spirits of our students weren’t diminished in the slightest. The students rose to the occasion with a number of students swimming close to or breaking their personal best times. Congratulations to our winning house Tibberoowuccum and all our age champions. Special thanks to all the parents who cheered and celebrated the success of their students. On the home stretch
Contributed by Stuart McIntosh With the upcoming season looking to be one of the strongest for many years, all Beegees teams have been given start dates for their training sessions. With all age group teams nearing full capacity you should register now if you still want to play. Read the sign up information on www.beegeesunitedfc.com.au or talk to our registrar Tracey on 0419 729 146. Vacancies are limited so avoid disappointment and find a team before they are all finalised.
Belly flop competition hard act to follow
Meanwhile, about 40 young players in U8– U11 teams have only three more Futsal games for the summer season, during which they have honed and developed their speed attributes and passing skills.
All Set
Serious Competitors
Age champions: U12 Emilia Sianovic and Bailey Tighe, U13 Tyla Paterson and Lachlan Kennedy, U14 Poppy Ives and Kayleb Josey, U15 Chervany Norcott and Dallas Muller, U16 Jessica Pilarski, Dylan Kerr and Nicholas Hind and Open Taylor Harvey and James Poole.
Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker On Thursday, February 7 Donna Manning played Kath Smith, with Donna making two nice breaks of 6 and 5 to win 14–6, while Bev Sockhill and Gillian Bradley played a friendly training game of association on the same lawn. A very enjoyable social ‘come and try’ day was held on Saturday, February 9 as a follow up to the Australia Day function and several players came out to enjoy the fine weather.
Gillian at hoop
Gillian Bradley, one of our members, is pictured at the come and try function in the typical stance of a player who has just missed a hoop. The body language is “how could this happen …. to me?”. Sometimes hoops have teeth. Helen Andrews and Ken Barker played opportunistic croquet to beat Vince Carbery and Nick Cram 14–5 on Sunday, February 10. Nick executed some spectacular rolls in his first turn and appears to be finding fine form. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the lawn at the bottom of the showground on Saturdays from 8-10am. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are on Thursdays and Sundays at 2.10pm for 2.30pm. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.
All of this extra indoor training has been done so they can hit the road running and give their teams the best possible chance when the season begins in a couple of weeks. These young players should be congratulated for their dedication and team spirit. Their efforts will also be reflected in top results.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover A busy week of bowls at Maleny Bowls Club last week. Teams travelled to Kilcoy on a very warm Wednesday and as the temperature climbed the interest and form appeared to lower. The Wednesday night competition started with some very close games including a golden point. A warm welcome to some new faces who enabled games to be played as some regulars were absent. This is a great feature of Wednesday night social bowls. Everyone welcome and everyone gets a game as the organisers make sure that no new faces miss out. Thanks to organiser Ray Ellemor who got some great games being played. On Friday scroungers was well supported by 17 players. Some great form was continued by Mick Bulger who will again come under the eye of the handicapper. Great to see new member Richard Bond show some nice touch to get a good win
on his second outing. Doug McGufficke showed some good late form to come out on top in his rink. Kay Gesch and Ian Dickson will be penalised by the handicapper for their good form. Thanks to all bowlers who made a great effort to support of these events. All levels of membership and bowlers are invited to come and try lawn bowls at 8.30am for 9am start on a Tuesday. The club hopes to run this with everyone’s support. The format will be determined by the numbers who turn up. Contact person is 2019 board member Joe Walters. Congratulations to members elected to the MBC board for 2019. Thank you to all of the outgoing board members for their selfless giving of time and effort in providing quality governance to the club, which adds a lot to the community and opportunities for locals and visitors as a community facility.

Contributed by David Hayes Wednesday, February 13: Ladies day - the triples final that was unable to be finished last year was played. Well done to Millie Freshwater, Lyn Griffiths and Jenny Hobson who defeated Joy Reason, Jenny Morris and Chris Dougan 1411. Maz Idle, Graham Meyers and Bruce Angus defeated Noelene Annakin, P Findlay (visitor) and Viv James 29-11. Lee Meyers, Di Hume and Ron Wilson defeated D Sawtell (v), Lindsay Henderson and Rob Scullion 16-14. Thursday, February 14: Social open pairs - It was a massive afternoon of bowls with 36 players taking the green. Winners on the day were Doug Sweedman and Bob Moss with two wins + 73 points. The runners up were Di Garland, Darryl Goschnick and Jenny Hobson with 41 points in their first game. Lucky draw went to Ron Rix and Graham Nicholson. Remember, if your partner is not at the club you will not have a chance to win the lucky draw. Our club has a duty of care regarding the heat, so ten ends will be the game for a number of weeks yet. Also, feel free to volunteer in the office. We could do with some more help. The men’s championship fours nominations are open and close this Thursday at 3pm. Ladies fours start this Wednesday with nominations for ladies singles opening. Hope to see many names down. Kerry Capern Memorial Day is the first Sunday in March. Open fours at a cost of $30 per person. For more information please enquire at the club or to Bill Tumbridge. Once again should be a great day so get your teams organised now.
Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Whistlers played at Yandina against Dare Doubles on a day that was a bit windy and very warm. Good tennis as usual with lots of rallies. We struggled a bit as it was the first match of the year, but got there in the end. Score was 48-16 games, 8-0 sets. Team was Donna Kuskopf, Aki Lepper, Paula Cudmore and Brenda Warner. The Wildcats were at home to Yandina. First game back is always challenging, but Pauline Fraley, Annie Stewart, Stacey English and Libby Howlett came out firing and took control of the match. The final score was 41-28 games, 6-2 sets. Well done team. Social tennis is on Monday at 8am and Saturday at 1pm. All welcome. For court bookings phone 0437 295 501 or go to our website www. wittatennis.com.au.

Choose moderation! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This Full Moon falls across your romance sector, however wise advice to you is available. A friend is around you who is on your side and moves in to your life with divine emotional and material sustenance. Embrace an opportunity to celebrate with any young child as fall gestures help them enormously. A possible influential union now. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 This Full Moon can stir up conflicts between home and family. However, keep your focus on responsibilities and your outside world commitments. You must be seen as sufficiently available. Enthusiasm is the one quality that you may be lacking, so pay attention to raising your expectations. The weekend concerns your appearance. CANCER June 24 - July 22 After today there is drive, smart advice and your own wisdom leading you to success. You can thank the full Moon being in the analytical sign of Virgo for this. closer, he saw it was a group of young women skinny-dipping. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him: "We're not coming out until you leave!" The old man frowned: "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the water naked." He held up the bucket saying: "I'm here to feed the crocs!" Some old men can still think fast.

An elderly man in central Queensland had owned a large farm for several years, which had a large waterhole on the property. It was perfectly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it with picnic tables, a barbeque and some fruit trees. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the waterhole as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a big bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the waterhole, he heard voices of people obviously enjoying themselves. As he came
