Hi Everyone... I recently had to race into Beerwah at 4.54pm for a flying trip to the ANZ ATM and then race down the footpath to get to the chemist before it closed at 5pm. It must have been my lucky day and the stars were aligned in my favour as I managed to get it all done in time. Tasks done, I leisurely sauntered back to the car and took a moment to try to embrace the current popular concept of being mindful. I paused a little more than usual taking a good look around and tried to remember what the street looked like when we first came to town back in 2000. It is amazing how council’s place making project has transformed Simpson Street and how great it looks now. Which definitely makes me look forward to seeing what the place making project now under way at Landsborough will do there. If you are keen to check out the draft Landsborough Place Making Master Plan and attend one of council’s information sessions at the Landsborough Hall in the coming week, check out council’s ad on page 6 for all the dates and times.

Local News More services for local mums and bubs Fewer expectant Sunshine Coast mums and premature bubs will have to travel to Brisbane for care with the opening of two new tertiary level services at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH). Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles said the SCUH neonatal service had been expanded and could now care for premature babies from 29 weeks. Mr Miles said the neonatal unit provided excellent care for unwell, low birthweight and premature babies, and babies born with congenital conditions compromising their health. “Having to travel to Brisbane for care can add to the stress on mums and families, so looking after premature babies right here on the Sunshine Coast will make a big difference to local families,” Mr Miles said. He also announced the opening of a maternal foetal medicine service at the hospital as a first for the region. “This means expectant mums with maternal and foetal complications who require specialist treatment such as tertiary level ultrasounds and procedures (such as amniocentesis) will no longer have to travel to Brisbane for care,” Mr Miles said. “The Queensland Government is committed to improving access to services for all Queenslanders, as close to home as possible.”

These services add two additional tertiary level services to SCUH. Dr Marc Miller, SCHHS clinical director of women and family services, said SCUH was the most advanced hospital in our region. “Our community quite rightly expects the best possible outcomes for mothers and babies and we’re committed to achieving this," he said. “The expansion to the neonatal unit and the introduction of the maternal foetal medicine service complement the existing maternity and neonatal services at SCUH. “The birth choices available for women combined with expert care and a collaborative approach mean that together we can offer the best outcomes for expectant mums and their babies.” Dr Miller said.

Andrew Wallace to recontest Fisher

Phone: 0427 709 011 No appointment Necessary

Closed Monday. Open Tuesday-Friday 9-5 & Saturday 8-12

As part GC&M News’ commitment to let readers know who the candidates are for the upcoming federal election, this week the sitting Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace confirmed he will once again be standing as a Liberal-National Party candidate. “I am committed to helping to make our community the place to be for education, employment and retirement. That is my vision for Fisher and it is my mission on behalf of you, the local residents who elected me,” Mr Wallace said. “Since you gave me the privilege to represent our community as your federal Member for Fisher, I have helped bring more federal government money to the Sunshine Coast than ever before. “I have helped deliver $3.13 billion for desperately needed upgrades to the Bruce Highway, to add an extra lane between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane and upgrade congested intersections. “I have helped deliver $390 million to duplicate the North Coast rail line between Beerburrum and Landsborough and get more Sunshine Coast commuters home sooner and safer. “I have helped deliver record federal funding for education and health on the coast, including an extra $266 million for our 40 local schools. “I have delivered $9.7 million for cutting edge local mental health treatment and research including in Mooloolah Valley, extra funding for childcare in Beerwah, Landsborough and Glenview, and the money needed for new mobile phone towers to improve reception in Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Peachester.

“In the hinterland I have delivered smaller scale community grants, which have allowed community groups including Maleny Men’s Shed, Palmwoods Memorial Hall, Maleny Golf Club, Celebrate Glasshouse Country, Beerwah Sportsground, Peachester Hall, Maleny Historical Society, Landsborough Area Community Association and many others to enrich more people’s lives and offer new activities. “At my many listening posts around the hinterland this year you have told me that you want to see the government’s highway and rail upgrades finished as quickly as possible and action now on our congested local roads. “You have told me that you want a strong local economy that delivers the jobs of the future that we want, and you have told me that you are very concerned about the terrible impact of Labor’s proposed new taxes on retirees, on small business and on our homes. “Delivering the local infrastructure we need, securing a strong economy and fighting to stop Labor’s destructive and unfair new taxes - these are the projects that will do most to make Fisher the place to be for education, employment and retirement this year, and these are the campaigns that I am committed to fighting for,” Mr Wallace said.

How often should I get acupuncture?

Knee, Ankle or Foot pain?

Solutions are just a step away

A lot of people think that one treatment will give magical relief but the reality is it may take months of treatments, especially in chronic conditions. Here is a quick guide to acupuncture frequency:

Once a week

Mild issues Pain 25% of the time Wellness and prevention Long-term treatment

Twice a week

Moderate issues Pain 50% of the time Chronic conditions

Three times a week

Moderate/severe issues Pain 75% of the time Near the end of your rope

Daily

Severe pain Pain 100% of the time Acute conditions

Acupuncture is cumulative … Each treatment builds on the last, so keep coming. Skipping too many treatments may hamper your progress. Stick with it … Get treatment several days in a row when the pain is stuck or you reinjure or aggravate your condition. We’re not psychic … We can’t predict how you will respond. True healing takes time and patience. We need you to listen to your body and come as often as you need. Don’t give up on us, as we’re certainly not giving up on you. Remember … SOME acupuncture is better than NO acupuncture. If you can’t make it in as often as you should, don’t sweat it, we will work with you. Big reforms to local government flagged With local government elections scheduled for March 2020, the Queensland Government has recently announced a raft of reforms to the electoral process and how elected councils operate. Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the proposed reforms were informed by the Crime and Corruption Commission’s Operation Belcarra report, which was written in response to allegations of corruption involving several South East Queensland councils including Ipswich. “We want to create a more open and transparent system of local government in Queensland and that’s why we’re consulting with stakeholders,” Mr Hinchcliffe said. “The Belcarra report emphasised the need for transparency and accountability as the cornerstone of local government.” The proposals under consideration are included in an information document from the Department of Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs (www.dlgrma.qld.gov.au/local-governmentreform.html). Some of the recommendations relating to elections include: • Compulsory preferential voting in council elections, which will standardise the election system across all three tiers of government • Public funding for council candidate campaigns, set at $1.57 per vote received, in a bid to reduce candidate reliance on third party donations • Compulsory candidate training before elections are held

• Caps on election spending by candidates • Public interest registers that require all candidates to disclose any contracts they have with council, their political party membership or any development applications they or close associates have before council • Real time financial and gift disclosures for council candidates, groups of candidates and third parties The plan to pay candidates who receive more than 4% of first preference votes $1.57 per vote could cost an estimated $650,000 according to the government’s own figures. From the 2024 election, councils will have to pay for this through the collection of extra rates. The way councils operate is also up for reform, including: • Tighter regulation on discretionary funds • Greater transparency in council meetings and the topics discussed • All council committees to keep minutes of meetings • Councillors to be provided information requested from council within five days • Changes to mayoral powers, removing the capacity to direct the work of senior staff and limiting what they can direct the CEO to do • Community consultation on council budgets The electoral changes are opposed by the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ), with its CEO Greg Hallam calling it a “voting calamity”.

“We strongly oppose the government’s plans to force compulsory preferential voting into all local council elections,” Mr Hallam said. “Forcing people to put a number in every square on a ballot paper would be a boon for political parties but a big headache for voters. “This change is all about making it easier for party politics to muscle its way into all 77 council chambers across Queensland, not just Brisbane. “People need to believe in the fairness and genuineness of any election. Our whole system of democracy is based on that belief. We all have a responsibility to make sure that remains the case. “Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to give a detailed explanation to Queenslanders why she thinks this is a good idea. Otherwise the government should keep its hands off local councils,” Mr Hallam said. The LGAQ has created a website where people can register their protest at www.handsoffmycouncil.com.au. “Our campaign pulls no punches,” Mr Hallam said, adding that it was needed to avoid an “electoral calamity, the results of which will be with us for at least the four years following the 2020 elections”. Mr Hallam said the LGAQ knew Queenslanders supported its stance. “According to our pollsters, 70% of voters are happy with the system they have now,” he said. In next week’s edition, GC&M News will provide an insider’s point of view on the proposed changes.

Maleny petrol station gets tick from state DENTURE CLINIC Sunshine Coast Council received correspondence last week that seems to be a bad omen for those fighting against the opening of a petrol station opposite the primary school in Maleny. The Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning told the council the development plans do not trigger any grounds to block the proposal. In the official response, comments were made on issues relating to state interests, which revolved around transport and main roads. No mention was made regarding issues or concerns from Department of Education. In its correspondence, the department also required council to include 11 conditions and subconditions to any development approval, although most are of an aesthetic or minor nature. The department did, however, recommend that council’s assessment manager consider restricting the Lawyer Street access to be an exit only. This would mean cars would enter the petrol station off Cudgerie Street and exit onto Lawyer Street. The department determined that the proposed development was not anticipated to create a safety hazard to the main road traffic or to the operation of the primary school bus set-down area and does not impact on public transport infrastructure. “It is not anticipated that the proposed service station will generate additional vehicle movements along Bunya Street during the peak traffic periods,” the advice states. “Outside peak traffic times, the state-controlled road and intersections operate within their desired

standards of service. The proposed service station does not result in the state-controlled road corridor or related intersections operating beyond their desired standard of service during these times.” The planning approval process will now continue, with council having the final say. As the development application has been classed as code assessable, council can only assess its merits against the relevant planning scheme requirements, with no requirement for public submissions. Cr Jenny McKay said that council’s statutory decision period under the Planning Act 2016 would now commence. “All feedback and comments made by members of the public will be taken into consideration as part of the assessment against the planning scheme,” Cr McKay said. Under the requirements of the Act, council had until April 18 to decide if it approves or rejects the application and, as it was assessable, the applicant had the option of taking a “deemed approval” if council’s decision was not made by that date, Cr McKay said. The group opposing the location of the petrol station ‘No Fuel Opposite Our School EVER’ has made a statement on its Facebook page. “Beyond disappointing,” it said. “We will continue to oppose this DA and thereby do our utmost to ensure the health and safety of Maleny State School students.” More information can be found at https://developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘MCU18/0111’.

Joyce Newton OAM to be memorialised through student bursary The death of Mrs Joyce Newton OAM late last year has shaken many people in Maleny and across the broader Glass House community. Mrs Newton, a fierce community advocate, died in October 2018 following a short battle with motor neurone disease. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is determined to keep her memory alive in the form of a bursary for year 11 and 12 students. “While there’s no hiding the fact that Joyce was a member of a political party, she was loved by people of all political persuasions,” Mr Powell said, citing her tireless advocacy on behalf of the Maleny community. “Joyce was instrumental in the original Maleny swimming pool and in finding a new home for the planned indoor aquatic centre and hydrotherapy pool,” he said.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell with Joyce Newton

“She singlehandedly ran the blood bank at the Maleny hospital each month during the 1980s, served on the executive of the Maleny swimming club, soccer club, Girl Guides, state and high school P&Cs and was a key figure in the formation of a nursing mothers group and kindergarten, also in Maleny. “A high school teacher who was well versed in history and civics, Joyce was a woman who had delved into the accomplishments of the past but was still determined that Queensland’s best days were ahead of us. “In memory of Joyce and to pay honour to her legacy as a teacher and passionate participant in politics and civic society, I am launching a new annual bursary in memory of Joyce for year 11 and 12 students who reside in the electorate of Glass House,” Mr Powell said. To compete for the bursary each year students from years 11 and 12 must submit a 1,000-word essay on a different topic pertinent to the life and legacy of Joyce Newton. This year her family selected the topic: What is the value of the many small businesses and farmers in the seat of Glass House and what is their importance to the state of Queensland? Given Joyce’s background as a farmer, a background shared with many people who came to Maleny in the late 1970s, this topic perfectly encapsulates one of her many passions. Farming was and still is a career that is a part of the lifeblood of Glass House. The winner of the competition will receive a $1,000 voucher for Concept IT at Maleny, acknowledgement and tabling of their essay in the

Queensland Parliament, and dinner for the winner and one guest at Queensland Parliament House. Second prize also includes acknowledgement and tabling of the essay in Queensland Parliament and dinner for the winner and one guest at Parliament House. “Through this bursary, I am seeking to honour the contribution of an extraordinary individual by encouraging future generations to seek to do the same,” Mr Powell said. He said interested students should flag their interest directly with his office via glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au or call 07 5318 8100. Entries should be emailed to his office by Friday, May 10.

Community News Film Festival wrap up

By Sonia Clark The Australian Film Festival held in Maleny over the weekend of March 8-10 was by all accounts a huge success. With attendance up by almost 10% on previous years, festival organisers from the Maleny Film Society were extremely pleased with the calibre of content and audience participation and attendance. Around 80 people attended the festival launch party and official opening by Cr Jenny McKay. Festival organiser Andrew Wallace said audience feedback was extremely positive, especially the chance to see films such as ‘Jirga’ and ‘Strange Colours’ as these films were not readily available. Andrew said most attendees felt the program was well balanced. Saturday’s viewing of the documentary ‘Backtrack Boys’ was one of the festival highlights with the Maleny Community Centre packed with attendees of all ages. “The documentary was definitely a standout in terms of attendance, even possibly a record for

a film in the community centre. It was good to see a documentary proving so popular and the Backtrack representatives received a tremendous ovation when they appeared on stage with the dogs after the film,” Andrew said. Following the screening, five boys from the Backtrack Program with staff member and facilitator Paul Dawson come onstage along with some very well-behaved dogs to answer audience questions. The story of one of the boys on stage was a pivotal part the documentary and the audience was especially delighted to see him among the visitors and clearly doing well. An informal Q&A session was followed by an extremely entertaining display of dog jumping in a nearby park, which was well attended by audience members. Now that this year’s festival has wrapped up, organisers are already setting their sights on next year’s 25th Australian Film Festival, an important milestone for Maleny Film Society.

If you have driven past the Glasshouse Country RSL in the past few weeks you will have noticed that work is currently under way on a deck on the side of the building. The deck will be named in honour of Glass House Mountains local Lance Corporal Jared ‘Crash’ MacKinney who was tragically killed in a action while on patrol in Afghanistan in August 2010. Jared left behind a wife and two children, one he never had the chance to meet, who still live in Glass House Mountains. The sub branch would like to invite members of the community to attend the dedication ceremony to be held on Sunday, March 24 from 11.30am. There will be a number of guest speakers including RSL (Queensland branch) state president Tony Ferris, Jared’s wife Beckie MacKinney-Clohesy, Corporal Daniel Keighran VC and Member for Glass House Andrew Powell. The official ceremony will be followed by a barbeque lunch at the RSL, 1 Reed Street, Glass House Mountains.

Who are the people in your neighbourhood?

Remember Sesame Street and how all the people knew each other, helped each other when needed and cared about each other? These days how many of us know our neighbours? Could you call any of them if you needed help or to share some good news or ask if they are OK? We don’t need to be in each other’s space all the time, just be able to say hi, be friendly, have a quick chat, share a cuppa. This year in the week of Neighbourhood Day, March 31 the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre is offering a challenge to the community say hi to a neighbour you haven’t met before. Why not invite a neighbour or a few for a cuppa at your home or at one of the lovely local coffee shops. Perhaps share a pizza or have a street party. Photograph your get together and send your pictures with a caption via email to admin@ghmnc.com by April 5. The photos will be judged and a prize of two family size pizzas, donated by Frankie J’S Reed Street, Glass House Mountains will go to the photo with the best caption. Bring back the good old days when we were a neighbourhood.

POLICE BEAT Giving way to emergency vehicles Do you know what to do when an emergency vehicle is approaching with lights and sirens activated? Emergency vehicles have their lights and sirens on when they need to get where they are going as quickly as possible. It is possible that someone’s life is in danger so it is very important that people make way for police, ambulance and fire vehicles. Whether the vehicle is behind you or coming towards you, you should slow down and move as far out of the way as possible. On many roads this would be to the left. On multi-lane divided roads such as highways and motorways the easiest path may be down the centre of two lanes, meaning vehicles in the right lane should move to the right. Do not stop suddenly as emergency vehicles may be travelling in excess of the posted speed limits so making sudden manoeuvres can be dangerous. If traffic is stopped and you can’t move to the left then stay stopped and allow the emergency vehicle to overtake you. Do not drive into the path of the emergency vehicle. At intersections an emergency vehicle with lights or sirens activated has right of way regardless of signage or traffic signals. You can enter an intersection, even if it is against a red light, if that is what is required to allow the vehicle through and when it is safe to do so. Watch out for emergency vehicles by looking ahead and checking your mirrors regularly. The current penalty for failing to move out of the path of an emergency vehicle is $304 and three demerit points.

Burglary with violence, Glass House Mountains Detectives are investigating a burglary that occurred in Glass House Mountains on the night of Sunday, March 10. Around 11.30pm, four men forced entry into a Springburn Drive house and confronted a 69-yearold woman and a 76-year-old man who were asleep at the time. The men were armed with a crowbar and forced the couple to sit on a chair in the bedroom while they searched the residence. The 76-year-old man was struck in the face by one of the men before they fled the house with the victims’ jewellery, mobile phones and a purse. The elderly man was treated at the scene by paramedics. The first man is described as Caucasian and was wearing shorts with a hoodie and socks with thongs. He was also wearing gloves and carrying a crowbar. The second man is described as Caucasian and was wearing long pants with a white long-sleeved

jumper, dark sneakers and a cap. He was also wearing gloves. The third man is described as Caucasian with brown hair. He was wearing white shorts and a white t-shirt, sneakers and a cap. The fourth man is described as Caucasian with shaved hair, about 180cm tall with a slim build. He was wearing long dark pants, a white t-shirt and sneakers. He was carrying a large torch. Assault investigation Curramore Police have arrested and charged a 36-year-old Curramore man at a residence in Woodford after another man suffered a gunshot wound to his mouth at a Curramore. The 42-year-old victim from Childers was shot through the windscreen of a vehicle on February 2. Police alleged the man who was charged was found in possession of methylamphetamine and cash. A number of subsequent searches conducted at residences in Woodford also uncovered a clandestine laboratory and a caravan allegedly stolen from Deception Bay in January. The man was charged with several offences including one count each of attempted

murder, dangerous conduct with weapons, unlawful possession of weapons, possession of ammunition, dealing with identification information, possession of and receiving tainted property, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and evasion as well as four counts of possessing dangerous drugs. Volunteer training

Stand out from the bunch

Contributed by Alison Sleath The volunteers at Maleny Visitors Information Centre recently attended a training session and enjoyed time with fellow volunteers from the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. The well attended training sessions were held over two days and covered a range of topics about the operation of the information centre. Judy Holden managed the training session with help from Judith Mason who provided a wonderful morning and afternoon tea. Last week a group of the centre’s volunteers also enjoyed the opportunity to visit some of the local businesses including The Orangery Maleny and The Guesthouse. If you would like to become a volunteer you can drop into the centre in Maple Street and pick up an application form.

Is Toastmasters good for your health? Contributed by Martine Goedart “Take two Toastmasters meetings and call me in the morning” may sound like an unlikely prescription from the doctor but there is medical and sociological research that shows becoming a Toastmaster could directly benefit your wellbeing. Research shows that socially oriented organisations like ours, where members come together to engage in stimulating and interactive learning activities by meeting and sharing in a mutually supportive environment, can benefit a member’s sense of wellbeing as well as physical health. While the Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Club is a friendly fun-loving club, members also find that being part of Toastmasters helps them to improve their communication and leadership skills, as well as developing self-confidence, and can be applied in the workplace for personal and career development. Come and join us at our meetings on the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 9am for a 9.15am start in our meeting room at the Church on the Rise, Beerwah Parade, Beerwah. The next meeting will be on Thursday, March 28. Men’s Shed opening celebrated The Maleny Men's Shed, located within the Maleny Historical Village in Bryce Lane, was official opened last Tuesday. While the Men’s Shed has been operating at the village since 2011 the men have shared workshop space with the Historical Society. The new shed has been built specifically for the Men’s Shed use. There were a number of special guests on the day including Uncle Noel Blair, Elder of the Jinibara people, who performed a welcome to country, the group’s patron and state Member for Glass House Andrew Powell, Cr Jenny McKay and the federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace, who officially opened the building. To complete the project a number of cash donations have been made including $35,000 from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, $15,00 from Sunshine Coast Council, $15,000 from the Rotary Club of Maleny for the slab and internal walls, $10,000 from Australian Men’s Shed Association and $13,000 from the Federal Governments Stonger Communites Funding for the extra slab work on the western end of the shed, as well as numerous donations from the Maleny Garden Club. Men’s Shed president Ric Townsend said many people had made major contributions to the shed over the years in both effort and donations. Although there are too many to mention individually, he did single out major contributors Elsie Brimblecombe and Janice Elavine, who donated much of the machine shop equipment. A highlight for both the Men’s Shed fellas and guests was the spectacular damper served at the morning tea, which was made by Laurie Fawns from Quota Club of Maleny.

You Said It Right to peace

The dog situation in Glass House Mountains appears to be completely out of control. My typical Sunday walk usually entails being barked at, growled at and lunged at as if you were about to have your throat torn out. In the evenings, or any other time for that matter, you can look forward to at least one dog somewhere barking incessantly, for hours. The Sunshine Coast Council doesn’t seem to have the resources to manage the problem, which is likely to worsen with a population growth rate of 2.5% and new developments popping up everywhere. I doubt registration fees cover the cost of policing recalcitrant dog owners, which is covered instead by rates. This is not how I want rate money spent, as council already fields more than 10,000 complaints a year. Dog poisonings are on the rise, as are neighbourhood disputes and violence, particularly in some areas. The links between the neighbourhood disputes and unwanted community noise such as barking are well known. The links between unwanted community noise such as barking and ill-health are also well known (WHO). For example, we have had neighbours leave our street because of barking while others have expressed feelings of frustration, annoyance, anxiety and depression. Most dog owners do the right thing, are respectful and law abiding citizens. Every day, we delight in seeing them walking their pets marvelling at all the different types (of dog that is!). However, the others - that reckless irresponsible few (and they know who they are) - need to lift their game, and start showing their neighbours and community some respect. Be responsible for your animal’s behaviour and the potential distress and harm this does to others when you don’t. While you have the right to own a dog or two or even three, the rest of us also have the right to peace in our own homes and to feel safe outside of it. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

Re: Millionaire tax dodge

Ken Dyer’s letter in GC&M News (March 13) could not be more wrong to downplay the serious damaging impact that Labor’s proposed retiree tax would have on ordinary retirees on the Sunshine Coast. In our electorate of Fisher alone, more than 7,200 retirees will be hurt by this unfair tax. Those affected nationally are estimated at over 900,000. Many seniors in our community are set to lose up to 30% of their income, while thousands of residents who are nearing the end of their working life will have their future retirement income slashed. Across Australia, 84% of the individuals who will be affected are on taxable incomes of less than $37,000 and 96% of them are on taxable incomes below $87,000. Mr Dyer is also totally wrong to suggest that these franking credits are a tax dodge. The income that ordinary retirees receive from franking credits has already been taxed once. Bill Shorten and Labor now want to force retirees to pay tax on this income twice. That is fundamentally unfair and it will hurt thousands of ordinary older people in our community who have done the right thing, worked hard and saved all their lives. It must be stopped and I intend to fight as hard as I can on behalf of local retirees to stop it. You can help by visiting the petitions page of my website and signing my petition today. Andrew Wallace Federal Member for Fisher 18

CONDITIONS Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

Fair play or not?

The Sunshine Coast needs to accommodate 200,000 new residents, which means development will be increasing at a faster rate than we've seen before. Our smaller rural hinterland towns, which could be seen as low-risk high-return locations for developers, are not exempt, as we are already seeing. But it seems to me that the development game is not being played fairly. There are rules in this game as set down by the local area plan codes and 2014 Planning Scheme. The players, the developers, begin the game submitting applications that do not adhere to the rules, attempting to break the rules and hoping to score a try without being pulled up by the umpire, the council, or noticed by the spectators, the residents. The players may be given time out to consider the rules further and change their game play. This can continue for a long time as players are given every opportunity to play fairly and follow the rules. However, the spectators, who may have been around long before the game started, are totally excluded from it regardless of the impact on them. This is particularly true in medium density, multiunit residential zone, where development is code assessable. But also the umpire can approve and has approved high density development in this zone. As well, rural residential zoned properties are being reconfigured into 600m2 low-density residential lots. People have to live somewhere, that's not the issue. The rules of the game are there to provide certainty and consistency for all involved. But it seems like the spectators can only sit on the sideline and wait while developer plays the game and the umpire decides on the outcome of the game. Can we make the game fair for everyone? Diana Michael Landsborough

Council issues

As there were a few issues relating to Sunshine Coast Council in the March 6 edition of GC&M News, I thought it might be pragmatic to address them in a single reply. First, it’s good to see topical council issues raised through the letters page. However, it’s worth reminding ourselves to use the reporting systems or else how will we make sure they work efficiently. Another option is to come and see me at my regular meet and greet sessions. Having made those points let’s look at the issues raised. Re: Council transport levy spending. Council records indicate that in July 2017, Brian was provided with a comprehensive response regarding the transport levy. The full levy report is available at any time and can be resent as needed to Brian. In regards to his view on drainage and potholes, I can only encourage the prompt reporting of maintenance issues such as these by a phone call to 5475 7272 or through the MyCouncil app. This will provide a trackable reference number, which means I can examine any responses as needed. My best advice is if you see it, report it! I’m certainly aware of the missing links of footpaths to connect our railway townships and I remain committed to achieving these links. It just makes sense to work with the state government to achieve an active transport corridor as part of the Beerburrum to Nambour rail project. Re: Are we there yet? I too will be very interested to see what is proposed in the revised plans of the Landsborough development once they are submitted by the developer (by June 12). We all know and love that Landsborough is a unique country township and the character of future development must contribute to and not destroy this.

Re: Beerburrum quarry questions A big well done to the Beerburrum Action Group and Beerburrum residents who have put many hours of research and analysis into arguing their case for not approving the quarry application. Rick Baberowski Division 1 councillor Sunshine Coast Council

State visit

I find it perplexing that the Queensland Government held a week of “governing from the coast” when they have seemingly little interest in actually providing for or supporting people in need on the Sunshine Coast. In October 2017 Jarrod Bleijie organised a meeting on my behalf with the then Health Minister Cameron Dick. The purpose of the meeting was to seek funding to assist in the development of Australia’s first live-in eating disorder residential facility. We arrived at the meeting to find that Minister Dick had more pressing matters and could not attend. Australia has approximately 1.2 million people with an eating disorder but very few eating disorder hospital beds available, so I would have thought that our proposal would at least attract a state health minister’s interest. Late last year Jarrod organised a meeting with the new Health Minister Steven Miles to once again seek state government assistance. At this point we had moved past the proposal stage, had secured substantial funding for the project from the Australian Government (thanks to Andrew Wallace and Greg Hunt), had numerous Sunshine Coast companies on board to assist and secured a 25 acre property thanks to a local philanthropist. This project will be Australia’s very first residential live-in eating disorder facility - a ground-breaking concept for the coast, Queensland and Australia. Disappointingly, the minister told me that “Queensland Health does not have any available funding for capital components for this project at this time”. Interestingly, the funds we were seeking equated to the money spent on a recent hospital name change. Change the name of a hospital or help create a new facility that will save lives … I see his conundrum. To add insult to injury, my local member Andrew Powell invited the minister to visit our facility at Mooloolah Valley and meet our endED team while he was here with the Premier “governing” from the region. He categorically refused our request. Mark Forbes endED.org.au

Connectivity issues

A while back I penned a piece on the state of affairs at the Beerwah Marketplace/Beerwah Village amalgamation. While some of the faults I was at pains to point out such as having trees growing under shade sails and paths running into posts were acted upon, I believe there is still room for improvement. Only the other day I happened to come across a shopper using a wheeled stability device, who it appeared was rather at risk of jack-knifing her trusty four-wheeled steed in a vain attempt to drag herself up a goat track, then having her life cut tragically short by a hoon going 15kmh in a car park obviously designed for one way traffic. I wonder sometimes whether the two shopping precincts are owned by the same company or if they are arch rivals who can't agree on who funds it. If it requires mediation between the two rival factions then look no further than yours truly. I'll even bring some spray paint and show them where the path needs to go. If not, the powers that be should put their short arms into their long pockets and sort it out. Mick Proctor Beerwah

Hinterland Kids Children perform at nursing home

A group of young people from the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church recently entertained about 30 residents at the Blue Care Maleny Erowal aged care facility. They performed musical items, recited poems, shared stories and quizzes, and joined in community singing with the audience. The residents were also treated with gifts of flowers and hand-made book marks. Kylie Leahy, the program coordinator, said it was a great opportunity for the children to interact with the older generation.

Disaster relief

The weather up north may have settled slightly, but it doesn’t mean that our northerly friends are forgotten by Peachester State School students. The student council elected to hold a coin drive to support disaster relief for farmers in the Julia Creek area affected by the recent flooding and horrific loss of their farming land and livestock. A large map of Queensland was drawn on the concrete in the undercover area with the aim of covering the map outline and a line from Peachester to Julia Creek with coins. Students excitedly laid out their coins along the outline. Not only did the students and community cover the perimeter of the map, but the coin lines doubled in thickness in some places. Together the Peachester students raised $426.55 for their farming friends in Julia Creek. All monies raised have gone directly to the rural produce store in Julia Creek as forward payment for poddy calf milk for farmers to collect.

Hair-raising science lesson

Contributed by Jeanette Roach Glasshouse Christian College year 6 students have enjoyed a hair-raising experience learning about science this week. Once a week all three year 6 classes come together in a collaborative learning space usually occupied by older students. It is a great opportunity for the students to become familiar with the space to make the transition to middle school seamless. During term one the focus has been on electrical circuits and energy transformation. Students enjoyed hands-on projects using solar kits, circuit building equipment and electronic kits. The highlight for most was when GCC’s science teacher Mr Steven Libby demonstrated static electricity using the Van der Graaf generator. Students were enthralled to see their hair stand on end and seemed to delight in zapping each other as well! Mr Libby’s physics tricks and circuit building inspired many year 6 students to think about physics as a possible future study area. Grace Pearson demonstrates the Van der Graaf generator and static electricity to the delight of the class 20

Local camp proves popular Words and photos by Casey McIntyre

Landsborough year 4 students recently had a fantastic time at their first school camp. The children enjoyed two wonderful days at Tunnel Ridge Ranch, which is right on our doorstep at Landsborough and overlooking the beautiful Ewan Maddock Dam. The children took part in horse riding, archery, canoeing, swimming, leatherwork, orienteering and night bushwalking. A bonfire after dinner was also a big hit. Tunnel Ridge Ranch is a hidden gem offering an amazing camp

program for primary and secondary school students. Thank you to all the amazing staff at the ranch, the class teachers and the parents who accompanied the students on camp.

STEM activity day

Contributed by Ashley Pitman Beerburrum students and teachers recently enjoyed a fun-filled day of finding solutions to challenges by working through a learning lens of STEM - science, technology, engineering and maths. The day was designed to help improve the students’ ability to think critically and engage in the STEM learning process, which is all about empathising with others, defining problems, thinking of possible solutions, designing and creating a prototype, then testing the solutions as well as publishing and sharing results.

John & Peter Smith Blayz and Hunter - Ozobots

John & Peter Smith Rydah and Mr Pitman - egg drop challenge Four groups engaged in different activities including designing a package that would protect an egg from breaking after being dropped from a height and Bee-Bot robots programed with instructions to navigate a path. The other groups used codes to help their new Ozobot (robots) display the behaviours of the main character of a fairytale and designed water filters to overcome the problem of clean drinking water around the world. The day finished with a presentation from each group showing what they learned from their activities.

Business feature

Book in now for Easter school holiday fun! Easter school holidays are fast approaching but there is still time to book your school-aged child into Glasshouse Early Education Centre for a vacation care schedule packed with a heap of super cool activities to ensure zero boredom and maximum fun. This activity program has been guided by suggestions from the children themselves about what they would like to do. The team at Glasshouse Early Education Centre has worked hard to put together an excellent vacation care schedule to keep school-aged children of all ages thoroughly engaged and entertained. Although a handful of the vacation care activities involve an additional charge (such as the excursion to see a new release movie on Tuesday, April 9 and the ‘wax hands’ incursion on Thursday, April 11), there are also lots of fantastic activities, creative engagement and local excursions at no additional costs to parents and carers.

The first day of the program kicks off on Monday, April 8 with a water play day featuring a slip and slide race track, water bomb competition and ice block cool down. Make sure you pack swimmers, rashie and a hat for this one. Tuesday will involve a cinema excursion on the centre bus to see a fun new release movie. This type of excursion is always popular with the children so make sure you book in early for this one.

Wednesday, April 10 will be a creative inspired day where children will be designing and making their own key rings to take home. Children will be drawing their artistic creations onto plastic to then be shrunk down to create stunning mini keyrings. This is a fantastic fun activity and the children love taking home their mini-sized creations at the end of the day. Thursday will involve some super cool ‘wax hands’ creations followed by a yummy picnic lunch, and Friday will see the centre run a canvas art workshop guaranteed to appeal to all budding young artists.

Pack food, hat and drink bottle and enjoy a park, play and picnic fun day on Monday, April 15 where the children will be off on a full day excursion to Page Street Park. Tuesday will be an ‘egg-cellent’ activity day featuring egg art, egg and spoon races, marbled eggs and more, which promises to be fun filled with heaps of laughs. Wednesday, April 17 will see the children heading up to the beautiful hinterland town of Maleny for an exciting and up-close visit to Maleny Dairies to find out where milk comes from for the local community. Finally, Thursday, April 18, the last day of vacation care before the Easter public holidays, will be party day with a bunch of cool activities and yummy food to wrap up the vacation care program. Many of the activities are included in the daily fee rate with additional compulsory activities also eligible for CCS discounts. To find out more or to book in contact Dee on 5438 7311. The centre is open from 6.30am to 6.30pm.

From the churches The Bible Story My father Ted loved the precision of work as a fitter and turner at the COD cannery near Northgate. The challenge of using a massive lathe to convert solid tempered steel into replacement parts for one of the giant factory machines brought job variety and meaning. Pineapples needed to be sorted, peeled, cored, sliced, tinned, sealed and cooked before labelling and packaging. Ted felt a part of the team. And then it all came unstuck. He stood up for a principle and that brought his continued employment to an end. Over a matter of weeks Ted went from favourite employee status to being unemployed with a family of four primary school aged sons. The crux of the matter was his decision to become a Christian and to follow his conscience. But God had a hand in Ted’s future. Within weeks a friend introduced him to Phil Starr who led a team selling door-to-door. Their products were not house cleaners or cough syrup, but books; books about health, about the Bible, and big family Bibles as well. Dr Percy Harold Seventh Day Adventist Church at a time, sleeping in his Holden station wagon by night, while driving through western Queensland by day visiting remote farmhouses. On his return home we would sit around the table hearing stories of successful sales, of snakes on the path, sticky black-soil bogging, being chased by bulls and of prayer as he found lonely people needing God’s comfort. He canvassed the Sunshine Coast hinterland where he delivered dozens of the well-known ten volume children’s set ‘The Bible Story, by Arthur Maxwell. Ted used the precision he learned at the lathe to not miss a town house or farm house. He has since passed to his rest, but with a legacy of the books he sold in farm houses across Queensland beginning over 60 years ago. God is faithful, Ted believed. And that is how I finish my weekly Bible podcast online: “God is always faithful. David wrote in Psalm 31: “Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.

Cold War

Back to Burgundy

We're on well-trodden ground here in this 2017 French family drama. Three adult siblings return to their idyllic childhood home set in a picturesque Burgundy vineyard to deal with their father's approaching death and its inevitable consequences. Jean (Pio Marmai) has returned after a ten year absence in Australia where he has set up his own vineyard, Jeremie (Francois Civil) has stayed and helped his father and Juliette (Ana Giradot) married locally and remained close by. All three are well qualified to run the home vineyard, having been trained by their father from an early age in the art of grape growing and wine production. Several plot lines and back stories intertwine to sustain the audience's attention and, of course, sibling rivalry and perceived favouritism are never far from the surface as the three reconnect to face the challenge of learning to trust each other again. Set amidst the changing seasons of this spectacular region, the film's cinematographer delights us with a palette of ever-changing colours and textures. When: Sunday, March 24 Food and drinks: Tea/coffee and homemade slices stand, drinks available from the bar Movie: Screens from 4pm (doors open 3.30pm) rating M Where: Maleny Community Centre, Maple St, Maleny Cost: Tickets available for members at Maleny Information Centre $8, or our website www.malenyfilmsociety.info. It’s time to raise your mugs Cancer Council Queensland is calling on Sunshine Coast locals to prepare to pop on the kettle and host an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event in May or June, with registrations for the fundraising initiative now open for 2019. The event supports around 3510 locals who are diagnosed with cancer each year. In Queensland one person is diagnosed with cancer every 20 minutes - the length of an average morning tea break. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said you can help support those impacted by cancer by getting friends, family or workmates together to share a cuppa and delicious food and donating to the cause. The official date of the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is Thursday, May 23 but people can register to host an event anytime in May or June. You can register to host an event at www.biggestmorningtea.com.au or by calling 1300 656 585. You will receive a free host kit with everything you need to make your morning tea a success. If you plan to host a public event, let GC&M News know so we can help promote the event by emailing us at editorial@gcnews.com.au.

This film won the best director award at Cannes in 2018 for Polish director Pawel Pawlikoski. Set against the chilling backdrop of the Cold War in Europe and inspired by and dedicated to the director's parents, it is the gripping love story of two people, one a musical director and the other a young singer. Their journey takes them from Poland of the late 1940s to East Berlin of the '60s. Shot in black and white, the effect is visually stunning, captivating the repression and all-pervasive state-sponsored fear of the Stalinist regime. Zula (played by Joanna Kulig) and Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) meet while working on a communist propaganda musical where the young Polish folk singer quickly becomes jazz pianist Wiktor's muse. When: Saturday, March 23 Food and drinks: Dinner 6-7pm catered by Spaghetti Junction, tea/coffee and homemade slice stand, drinks available from the bar. Movie: Screens from 7.15pm, rating MA 15+

In the Garden Peachester Garden Club

Contributed by Patricia Bradford We held our annual general meeting in February, with Coral Beutel invited to chair the meeting and the election of office bearers. Many thanks to the outgoing office bearers and welcome to the new office bearers. Special guest Denise Owen was invited to present the Irene Owen trophy to the winner of the competition bench for 2018. Congratulations to Pam Innes with a total score for the year of 200 points. Second was Trish Bradford on 172 points, third Margaret Ferris 30 points, fourth Suella Lanceley 13 points and fifth John Innes nine points. We would like to see more members enter the competition bench in the coming year. A unanimous decision was made to donate $500 to help with flood relief in North Queensland, which will be done through the CWA flood relief appeal. Work has continued on the plaque and memorial to honour Nessie Pratten and is almost complete. The next meeting is in the garden of Helen Jonsen on Thursday, March 21 at 9.30am. If you are entering the competition bench, please arrive earlier to set up. special For more information and from hy trop her g ivin rece s Inne Pam address phone 5496 9169. guest Denise Owen

Mooloolah River Landcare Slash pines and their cousins – “from little things big things grow” These weeds from North America are fast growing and found nearly everywhere. The wind-blown seeds are easily spread from tall tree tops. Options for taking out mature trees can be expensive. The next option? Fortunately, as unwanted seedlings they are quick and easy to dispatch. There is no need to use herbicide as the trees don’t sucker or grow back from stumps. Once they get towards 50cm or more cutting them off as close to the ground as possible is time effective. Use extended arm loppers, a brush cutter, sharp hoe, or your safe cutting implement of choice. Whatever tools you use, expect to gain a liberal coating of sap which will need cleaning off. The pine needles drop every winter, accumulate and begin to reclaim the forest. Pines regularly shed lower branches as they age so they are a risk in the yard and a risk when you cut them down. While all larger trees can be chipped and branches mulched, the tannins and acids may be a problem for some soil types. Both the stumps and trunks attract wood-eating borers, which in turn become food for turkeys, cockatoos, etc. The slash pines common to the Sunshine Coast originally came from the southern USA and include the Florida pine (Pinus elliottii) and close cousins and their hybrids. If you have a radiata pine typically grown in NSW and Victoria, which prefer gravelly well drained hill sides (AKA California pines), treat them the same way … and don’t let them get too big.!

Feeling a bit shady

with Spencer and Karen Shaw

This moist weather is great for lush greenery and a superb time for planting ferns, palms, gingers and just about anything else really! In our shadehouse at Forest Heart we currently have a great range of ferns ranging in size from the king of them all, the king fern (Angiopteris evecta) – with fronds up to 5m in length – through to the delicate but vibrant pale green of the maiden hair fern. We’ve got some spectacular crow’s nest ferns in 300mm pots that make awesome foliage statements. In palms, we have piccabeen palm, cabbage tree palm and walking stick palm. The latter are the smallest of our local palms and are great in the shade or as an indoor specimen. If you like tree ferns we’ve got four types at the moment – common, rough, soft (Dicksonia) and Norfolk. An unusual flowering plant we have for shady spots is the hoya macgillivrayi, with its dark green foliage and pink flowers. In gingers we have the delicate Alpinia arundelliana with its pink flowers. Forest Heart EcoNursery is closed March 19-26 for a quick holiday, but we will see you soon to check out all these great plants and so many more.

Sport Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Monday, March 11: Ladies financial day - A warm welcome to our ten visiting clubs as well as our four local Glasshouse teams. The sun was shining with the temperature climbing well into the high 30s. After 18 ends the club air conditioning and cold drinks before lunch were very much appreciated. Our visitors carried off all the prize money. Winners were Pine Rivers, runners up were Bongaree and the lucky draw went to Narangba. Well done and thank you to all that attended and to our members who put in their time to get the day organised. Wednesday, March 13: Ladies day jackpot triples - Ten teams played 18 ends in very hot conditions hoping to win the $600 in our first jackpot for the year. Winners with the highest margin were Bob Bloomer, Noelene Annakin and John Annakin. Runners up were Sally Squires, Dick Coppa and Brian Squires. Lucky draw went to Jill Kirchheiner, Viv James and Ron Wilson. No lucky winners for the jackpot. Thanks to the ladies from Glasshouse Views, one of our club sponsors, who paid a visit to talk about their facilities.

Men's fours winners Tony Verdonk, Bruce Angus, Rob Scullion and Mac Townson

Maleny Bowls Club

Lady drawn and graded triple winners Jenny Hobson, Millie Freshwater and Lyn Griffiths whose final was held over from 2018 Sunday, March 17: Men’s club championships fours final - In tricky conditions and a little stop in play after 16 ends due to rain, Bruce Angus, Tony Verdonk, Mac Townson and Rob Scullion defeated David Hayes, Len Skerry, Dean Shaw and Graham Richardson 20-14. Thanks to all those who came and watched and for Barry Kirk who umpired. Men’s B grade certified singles nominations are open and will close on Thursday, March 28. Some big news for our club. On Saturday and Sunday, March 30-31 we will be hosting a section of the qualifying finals of the Q7s. The format will be two games in the morning and two games after lunch on both days. The committee hopes many members and spectators will come down to watch and support these games. We are one of only a few clubs to have the privilege of hosting this event with over 60 clubs taking part in this comp. The clubs participating could be from anywhere in the state. At the moment our division 4 team is sitting on top of the table but we don’t know yet where they will be playing if they make the finals.

Witta Tennis

Beegees kick off season full of confidence Contributed by Stuart McIntosh This Saturday, March 23, the season begins for the reserve men at 4pm followed by the main event, the premier men at 6pm against Kawana at the Kawana football home ground. On Friday, March 22 the third division men kick off at 8.30pm at the Buderim Wanderers home ground, the fourth division men kick off at 6.30 pm at the Caloundra home ground and the fifth division men’s team are off to Bribie for a 7pm kick off. All teams should be at full strength and will be looking to build on last year’s premiership wins. U6 and U7 mini roos training under way Last Thursday afternoon saw the Beegees newest influx of top gun recruits. A marvellous turnout means that this year we will be fielding three U6 teams and four U7 teams. All youngsters were keen and are looking forward to their season kicking off in a couple of weeks. Teams and team coaches were announced and mini roos coaching director Nathan Cobb said he believes this will be one of the best seasons for some time.

Contributed Pauline Fraley The extreme heat of last week did not lessen the enthusiasm of the Wagtails with some good tennis enjoyed by all but Witta was beaten on the day by the cooler Maleny Racqueteers. The Wildcats were at Mooloolaba against the Mojitos. It was extremely hot, humid, noisy and smelly, and don’t forget the school bell and the crows. However, the Wildcats are a tough group and fought hard in the conditions and brought the win home. The team was Pauline Fraley, Stacey English, Jo Williams and a big thanks to Jennifer from Nambas No Faults for helping us out. Final score was 5-3 sets; 34-29 games. Whistlers played against Maroochydore Blue Bells. It was a warm day, but not too bad with a nice breeze at Witta. Good rallies as always with Maree Hooley dropping in and we had a good win as a bonus. Score was 47-19 games, 7-1 sets. Team was Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper and thanks Chris Bower for filling in. Social tennis is on Monday at 8am and Saturday from 1pm. All welcome. Court bookings: 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

Contributed Graeme Glover Some welcome rain to the hinterland has made getting a game of bowls in a challenge this week. Well done to those who enjoyed some great triples action on Tuesday morning at the club. Joe Walters is our contact person for this event. The type of game is determined by numbers present with a voucher prize for the winning team of the morning. Come along and give it a go. All levels of membership and visitors welcome. Wednesday night saw the return of a few familiar faces to add to the enjoyment for all. The upset of the night was the shock form loss of the McKingston trio. It was great for all in attendance to be able to compare the new lights with the old on the greens as the roadside half have been replaced. Paul Kemp was shocked at how close he often gets to the jack now that quality lighting enables him to see his bowling prowess. We have had a great response from members on the lovely consistent lighting achieved so far. Storms over the weekend prevented completion. Come on down and join in 6pm for 6.30pm every Wednesday evening. Coaching and bowls are available to use free of charge. Friday afternoon the Scroungers team was well supported. Well done to all to beat the storm with five rinks full and all were tight tussles. Mick Bulger will be in the sights of the handicapper as he is regularly in the winner’s circle this season. Well done Mick and all the winners. Great to see new member Richard Bond is racking up some good wins. Well done to all for you efforts this week in supporting all club events. Thank you those who travel to show the flag at our neighbouring clubs. This is very much appreciated. Check the notice board and put your name up as the club will make up as many teams as we can to travel. All comers welcome. A reminder to all bowlers to please get your names in for our monthly pairs on the fourth Monday of the month. See you all on the green or in the club house.

Maleny Golf Club

Contribute by Ken Barker A variety of games took place on Thursday, March 7. Donna Manning was very helpful with Gary Winter and Gillian Bradley playing a friendly game of association. Sally Adams and Bev Sockhill held Brenda Winter to a three all draw at golf. On lawn one Ken Barker and Donna squeezed ahead of Nick Cram and Kath Smith 10–9 in a tight association game. Sunday, March 10, and beautiful weather brought people to the lawn. Sarah Widin and Nick played well to beat Vince Carbery and Kath 14–8. On lawn two Stuart Craig and Donna soundly defeated Ken 9-7. Stuart played well. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are at 2.10pm for 2.30pm on Thursdays and Sundays. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555. Member Ted Gardner is of one of the club’s many quiet helpers who regularly helps with the lawn mowing and on working bees. Here he can be seen waiting patiently for the mower so he can fill the barrow

Beerwah Golf Club Contributed by Brenda Briese Finally some great rain! Luckily, it seems this area escaped the wrath of the storms this time. Saturday, March 9 was our annual district carnival day, which is open to all players in the Sunshine Coast and South Burnett District Golf Association. On the ladies side there were 27 players in two divisions playing a stableford event. The overall winner was Debs Rutherford on 37 points. Division one winner was Karen Gannon on 33 points from visitor Leanne Dowdle on 32 points. Division two winner was Del Machen on 33 points on count back from Lea Doyle also on 33 points. NTPs: 2 - Helen Lewis, 5 - Jo Malone, 9 and 16 - Andrea Campbell. 18 - (second shot) Hope Hannah. Thursday, March 14 we again played a stableford with only 40 ladies. Winner was Vikki Bartel on 34 points on count back from Robyn Taylor on 34 points. The second runner up was Sue-Ellen Boreham on 33. NTPs 2 Andrea Campbell, 5 - Sue-Ellen Boreham, 16 - Felicity Smith and 18 – (second shot) Teresa Keast. BRD went to 31 points. Just a reminder the membership drive continues until the end of March so if you have ever thought you may be interested in the game, now is a great opportunity to come and try. Also, the restaurant is now open and the comments to date have been extremely positive. It's a great menu, good drink prices and no parking problems. Why not give it a try. Just for Laughs Thanks for your help

A dinner speaker was in such a hurry to get to his engagement that when he arrived and sat down at the head table, he suddenly realised that he had forgotten his false teeth. Turning to the man next to him he said: "I forgot my teeth." "No problem," the man said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of false teeth. "Try these," he said. The speaker tried them. "Too loose," he said. The man said: "I have another pair, try these." The speaker tried them and responded: "Too tight."

Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 There is a full Moon and an equinox this Thursday, March 21, in the sign of Libra. That will flex big muscles, bringing everyone’s needs up close and personal. As the Sun now enters the sign of Aries, opposite the Moon in Libra, a charming companionship enters to make your life a whole lot better. Avoid bad financial situations. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Your amazing event continues for the first month as Uranus, the planet of exceptional changes, moves into your sign. As this week sees the full Moon and an equinox, there is the need to be wise in your choices with money plans. This full Moon impacts on your employment. In a crisis, be a diplomat and strive for harmony. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 As the equinox on Thursday, March 21 sees a full Moon in the sign of Libra it sends emotional signals and a month of social activity. This is because the month of Aries has now started and everything moves into an assertive flavour. You should plough through facts and shopping options with a clear line of sight. Positive actions! CANCER June 24 - July 22 Thursday’s equinox and full Moon period can shed light on a problem or conflict in the home or on the job. There will be a need to express yourself and resolve everything. A friend’s conversation, although encouraging, may fill your head with unrealistic expectations. Moderation is the safest route to take. Caution recommended for travel.

Week Beginning 20/03/2019

The man was not deterred at all. He then said: "I have one more pair. Try them." "They fit perfectly," the speaker said. With that he ate his meal and gave his speech. After the dinner meeting was over, the speaker went over to thank the man who had helped him. "I want to thank you for coming to my aid. Where is your office? I've been looking for a good dentist." The man replied: "Oh! I'm not a dentist. I'm an undertaker." Noel Meyers Landsborough

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 With the energy of the Sun, together with the full Moon, you are ready to complete work cleverly and are ready for some fun and games. This week lights up your communication, travel and networking areas. The weekend sees charming companions entering your own lively, enthusiastic and personal world. Be ready to jump into escape mode! CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 You are empowered this week to reach goals you set for yourself. You will not have to look far to find supporters who will cheer you on. The reason for this is that the full Moon in Libra could shed some light on problems concerning your work or relationships. Proceed thoughtfully as you may be offered a chance to resolve any problems. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 March 21 is the all-important time of an equinox, enjoying a full Moon period also in the sign of Libra. As the Sun is in Aries opposite Libra this could bring a week of ultimate joy and good fortune, so celebrate life, love, adventure and friendship! The Libra Moon offers her finest charms which you graciously receive now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Luna aspects can trigger and release underlining strain involving ties with other people, even with those you just have casual dealings with. Under the Sun sign entering Aries for the next month stand up for your own interests. The full Moon in Libra makes this a crucial period regarding joint funds and paying out any debts or mortgages.

LEO July 23 – August 22 There are good communication signals as you are called excitingly to foreign shores or far away friends. This is because there is an equinox and full Moon together in the sign of Libra. As the Sun now enters the month of Aries a relationship can turn into a delightful bonus of inspired love and exciting developments. Local activities keep you busy. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 A financial situation works in your favour between you and your partner as the energy is high to make things happen. Aim high, but keep in mind the danger of over extending yourself. Your relationship with a co-worker or partner, can be profitable for you in some way, perhaps very supportive and enjoyable. Reach out to connect now. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 The full Moon lights up your sign and you see your needs versus others. There are multi-stimulations coming up for you this week as the equinox on the 21st sees the Sun enter the sign of Aries and you will be floating in blissful adoration, perhaps in shopping heaven by lunch! There may be a need to enjoy some quality time with your pet. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 You must see now that there are others able to provide you with support to heal physical problems, perhaps also to improve your work conditions. The emphasis is on not going it alone, so turn to others for support, whether individually or as part of a group. This is because the Sun sign enters Aries and the full Moon is in Libra now.
